Mahama will launch ‘ruthless’ war against galamsey – Ablakwa – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama will, in the coming days, unveil an unprecedented and uncompromising crackdown on illegal small-scale mining, locally known as galamsey.

The announcement follows the August 6 helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, August 14, Mr. Ablakwa said the President has made it clear that the illegal mining menace will be confronted with unmatched determination.

“I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed before in this country. President Mahama is going to lead a very ruthless and relentless fight against galamsey.

“He didn’t mince his words. We had a brief cabinet meeting and the President was very clear that he would lead a war we have never seen before to stop this existential threat confronting us,” he stated.

The upcoming measures, Mr. Ablakwa indicated, will mark a new phase in the government’s anti-galamsey campaign, with decisive policies and operations aimed at protecting the environment, safeguarding water resources, and preserving livelihoods in affected communities.

As the country prepares to bid a final farewell to the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, an emotional message he once penned to celebrate his mother on her 70th birthday has emerged.

With a deep sense of emotion and a great show of gratitude, Dr Boamah’s message has touched many hearts on Facebook, where he personally shared it in a post.

It reads “Happy 70th Birthday.”

“A child can”, truly, “not pay for his mother’s milk.”

“Thank you. God bless you abundantly and grant you many more healthy and fulfilling decades.”

Multiple sources have confirmed that Dr Edward Omane Boamah was deeply devoted to his 76-year-old mother, and as the only son, Dr Boamah’s attachment to his mother was evident in his frequent worries about his mother’s future care.

According to Sam George, who is one of the closest allies of the late minister, Dr Boamah cared so much about his aged mother and was deeply concerned about her future.

In a tribute to Dr Omane Boamah, Samuel George stated that Dr Omane Boamah will often ask, “Who would take care of your Mum if anything were to ever happen to you?”

This glimpse into Dr Boamah’s personal life highlights the strong bond he shared with his mother.

The crash of the Z9 helicopter, which belonged to the Ghana Armed Forces, claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed on August 6 2025.

Madina Job Centre signs MOU to provide loans for young MoMo entrepreneurs

0

The Madina Job Centre has signed a partnership agreement with Precept Advisory Limited to roll out a new initiative dubbed INSTABUSINESS, a weekly loan support programme targeting Mobile Money (MoMo) vendors in the Madina Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

The project is designed to empower young entrepreneurs in the digital financial services space, expand access to startup capital, and contribute to Ghana’s broader youth development and economic inclusion agenda.

Speaking at the signing, the Director for Partnerships Dr. Augustine Kwegyir Aggrey, emphasised the need for innovation in financing for underserved communities.

“Our goal is to stimulate entrepreneurship and unlock the potential of youth-led businesses, especially in high-impact, low-entry sectors like mobile money services.

Through this partnership with Precept Advisory, we are building a bridge between finance and grassroots enterprise,” he said.

The Head of Business of Precept Advisory Limited, Mr. Prince Kwadwo Agyemang, also shared his optimism about the partnership.

The Madina Job Centre, established as a community-led development platform, works to match local talent with employment, skills training, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Since 2019, the centre has rolled out job matching services, entrepreneurial and vocational training programs, agricultural training programs, business clinics, and youth-focused capacity-building workshops.

INSTABUSINESS is the latest in a growing portfolio of programs aimed at tackling youth unemployment and underemployment from the ground up.

Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, who has been a staunch advocate for youth-centred development, lauded the initiative.

“The future of Madina lies in the empowerment of its people, especially the youth.

This project is a practical step in addressing the financial gaps that limit the growth of small businesses. I am proud to support this partnership, and I encourage our young entrepreneurs to take full advantage of it.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Precept Advisory Ltd, Mr. Emmanuel Tetteh, also shared his optimism about the partnership.

“We believe in solutions that are practical and close to the people.

This loan model is simple, accessible, and tailor-made for the realities of mobile money agents. Together with the Madina Job Centre, we are proud to be part of a solution that puts financial tools in the hands of hardworking Ghanaians.”

For many vendors on the ground, this initiative brings a long-awaited lifeline.

Salamatu Fuseini, a MoMo vendor at Ritz Junction, shared her thoughts:

“Sometimes, we don’t have enough float to serve customers during peak hours.

If this loan can help us manage our cash flow better, it will really change our business. I’ll be registering immediately.”

The INSTABUSINESS program directly contributes to Ghana’s national youth development goals by promoting entrepreneurship, improving financial inclusion, and supporting job creation in informal urban economies.

The program is set to launch in phases beginning this August, with selected vendors receiving onboarding, financial literacy training, and weekly disbursements.

Mobile Money vendors and other interested persons are encouraged to walk into the Madina Job Centre to register or make further inquiries.

The Centre remains committed to empowering local businesses and supporting the growth of grassroots entrepreneurs in Madina and beyond.

As the digital economy continues to evolve, partnerships like this represent a crucial step in creating equitable and lasting development pathways for young people in Ghana—starting with communities like Madina.

MTN has solved the biggest challenge facing GFA with four national team partnership – Kurt Okraku

0

GFA President Kurt Okraku GFA President Kurt Okraku

GFA President Kurt Okraku says MTN Ghana’s latest sponsorship has addressed the most pressing challenge confronting the football governing body.

The telecommunications giant has committed $2 million over two years to become headline sponsor for four national teams — the Black Stars, Black Queens, Black Satellites (U20) and Black Starlets (U17).

The agreement, signed on Thursday at MTN Ghana’s Head Office in Accra, replaces the previous $2 million deal signed ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which covered only the senior men’s team. The new partnership runs until 2027.

“This investment by MTN would ensure that these young boys, Black Queens, and Satellites would have the best of preparations that would put them in the competitive mood for the big championships,” Okraku said.

“The biggest challenge of the full association has been solved by MTN. Most often, I don’t really tell my story, but you need to occupy this seat for two days or one day to fully understand the problems that we go through in bringing talents like the Starlets up to become the John Paintsils and the Fatau Daudas. It’s not easy.”

The Black Stars lead Group I in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, while the Black Queens recently claimed bronze at the 2024 Women’s AFCON.

CDS explains use of cocoa sacks in helicopter crash recovery

0

Lieutenant General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces

Lieutenant General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, has explained that cocoa sacks were used to transport the remains of eight helicopter crash victims due to severe heat damage.

He said that although body bags were available at the crash site, the condition of the remains made them unsuitable for use.

“We had some body bags at the scene, but the remains were so heated that it was not conducive for the bags to be used,” he stated when executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) visited him at Burma Camp in Accra.

“It was in a thick forest. It was getting late. We had the option of leaving our remains there until the following day, and we knew what would have happened to the bodies,” he added.

Lit. Gen. Agyapong acknowledged that while some actions may not have aligned with cultural norms, the team did their best with the resources available.

He urged public patience, assuring that investigations are underway and updates would follow.

The CDS confirmed that search operations at the crash site continue to recover all remains and aircraft parts.

“As I speak, personnel on the ground are expanding the search daily because we do not yet know the full extent of the wreckage,” he said.

Albert Dwumfour, President of the GJA, urged the military to provide regular updates to prevent misinformation.

“Even when there is no update, just informing the public that the investigation is ongoing and that the public should disregard any information in the media or in the public space until you come out with what, that alone can serve as information,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour also called on journalists to be circumspect in their coverage of the incident.

“I urge our members to be circumspect in their reportage, to attach some decency to whatever we put out there because, in times like this, these are very sensitive problems, where if we don’t take care of the information you put out there, it will rather cause more harm,” he stressed.

Roma make £20m bid to sign Man Utd outcast Sancho

0

Roma have made a £20m offer to sign England winger Jadon Sancho from Manchester United, where he remains excluded from training with the first-team squad.

The 25-year-old, who has been told to find a new club before the transfer window closes on 1 September, joined United for £73m four years ago.

Juventus, who, unlike Roma, have qualified for this season’s Champions League, are also known to be interested in Sancho.

The former Borussia Dortmund wide man returned to United in the summer after Chelsea paid a £5m penalty to get out of an obligation to buy him, having spent last season on loan at Stamford Bridge.

There have also been suggestions that Roma would be interested in a loan, containing clauses that could be triggered at the end of the season.

However, that issue is complicated by the fact that Sancho’s United contract expires next summer. The club does have an option to extend it by an additional year, although, given Sancho’s salary, it is debatable whether they would be willing to do that.

United are determined to sell Sancho. However, the closer to September they get without a deal in place, the more likely they are to consider a potential loan move, given it would at least take a significant sum off their wage bill.

Four players – Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrrell Malacia – have been training away from boss Ruben Amorim’s squad since the start of pre-season last month as the club believes they will have left before the window closes.

Sack MMDCEs, police chiefs in galamsey zones – Ken Ashigbey to Mahama

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining (GCAG) Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining (GCAG)

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining (GCAG), has issued a strong call for action to President John Dramani Mahama.

He is urging that all Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and police commanders assigned to areas plagued by illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey should be dismissed.

Ken Ashigbey has called for decisive action to combat illegal mining, stressing accountability for local authorities who have failed to halt the worsening crisis.

He accused some officials of complicity or negligence, pointing to persistent galamsey activity in known hotspots.

Ashigbey urged the Inspector General of Police to reshuffle commanders in mining-prone regions, arguing that their continued presence enables illicit operations and, in some cases, raises suspicions of direct involvement due to unexplained wealth or ties to mining equipment.

Beyond individual accountability, he proposed broader reforms, including declaring a state of emergency in severely affected areas, revoking licenses for mining in forest reserves, and publishing the identities of excavator importers to expose the financiers behind illegal mining networks.

Dr Ashigbey underscores that the failure to enforce environmental protections reflects a deeper leadership crisis. “Some of these officers have become extremely wealthy.

If they are not benefiting from galamsey, then they are simply incompetent. Either way, they must be transferred,” he declared.

Nigeria’s defence chief defends military conduct amid scrutiny

0

Nigeria’s defence chief has defended operations against insurgents and criminal gangs that have caused civilian casualties, saying the military is doing what it can to prevent loss of life.

Nigeria’s military has increasingly used airstrikes against the growing threat of militias in the north and central regions.

It has admitted to mistakenly targeting civilians while pursuing armed gangs in the northwest, where there is widespread insecurity, and has promised to investigate such cases.

Defence Chief of Staff General Christopher Musa also called for a review of international laws, arguing that they restrict state forces while leaving non-state actors “who kill at will” unchecked.

In rare comments to reporters in the capital, Abuja, on Wednesday, Musa said the military frequently halts operations to prevent civilian harm, even at the cost of compromising tactical advantages.

“We are made to look as if we are committing the worst atrocities ever, but I can assure you that we are doing the best we can. We respect human rights and value civilian lives,” he said.

“We often abort operations to avoid civilian casualties … this has, in part, prolonged the conflict.”

The remarks come after growing scrutiny of Nigeria’s counterinsurgency operations and accusations by rights groups that the military has used excessive force.

But there are frustrations within Nigeria’s armed forces, where many believe they are being judged against higher standards than comparable forces in more developed countries.

They also say too little account is taken of the difficulties of fighting informal armed Islamist insurgents or criminal gangs who operate entirely among civilians.

The general cited ongoing training in human rights and international humanitarian law for military personnel, both locally and abroad, as evidence of progress.

Foreign missions join Ghana in mourning helicopter crash victims

0

Ghana continues to receive an outpouring of messages from the international community commiserating with the nation over the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of senior government officials and military officers.

The Ghana Air Force helicopter was carrying eight prominent figures when it went down, killing Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of

Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Ashanti Regional Minister; and Samuel Aboagye, former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East.

The crash also claimed the lives of Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, described as one of the Ghana Air Force’s brightest young pilots; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The incident has plunged the nation into mourning, prompting condolences from across the globe.

On Tuesday, members of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana signed a Book of Condolence at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has been opened from August 12 to 14, 2025, in honour of the victims of the August 6 helicopter crash.

“This has been a difficult period for us – devastating, traumatising, depressing. We are all petrified; we are shattered. I wish to extend my deepest commiserations to the children, spouses, families, and loved ones of the victims, as well as to the President, the Vice President, the Government, and the people of Ghana,” he said in a media interview.

Daniel Kottut, Deputy High Commissioner of Kenya to Ghana, conveyed the condolences of the Government and people of Kenya, including President William Ruto, to the Government and people of Ghana, describing the victims as fallen heroes who died in the line of duty.

He called the news heartbreaking and offered prayers for the bereaved families, expressing hope that God would fill the void left by the deceased.

Albert Mateyo Chifita, Deputy High Commissioner of Zambia to Ghana, described the tragedy as a painful loss to both nations, recalling the historic bonds between President Kenneth Kaunda and President Kwame Nkrumah in the struggle for independence.

“Both countries face similar challenges, and the problems of Ghana are our problems. To lose ministers is not an easy thing, but we leave these matters in the hands of God,” he said, while extending Zambia’s heartfelt condolences.

Matěj Denk, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Czech to Ghana, conveyed condolences on behalf of the Czech Government and people, reaffirming the long-standing collaboration between the two countries.

He said the Czech Republic mourned with Ghana in this difficult moment, recalling close engagements with Dr Edward Omane-Boamah and Dr Murtala Mohammed during the visit of Czech President Petr Pavel to Ghana, when the two ministers personally interacted with the President.

Denk noted that President Pavel has sent his personal condolences, adding that the Czech people were deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the eight citizens.

Ms Anne Kariuki, Acting Representative of UNICEF Ghana, expressed sympathy to the Government and people of Ghana, pledging UNICEF’s solidarity during the difficult time.

Ms Isabel Ibarra, representing the Embassy of Spain, conveyed Spain’s condolences, and described the tragedy as a loss shared by friends and partners of Ghana.

Abdalafatah A K Alsattari, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Ghana, said his staff wept when the news broke, and conveyed the condolences of the Palestinian Government and people, including President Mahmoud Abbas.

He said Palestine, in Gaza and the West Bank, stood firmly with Ghana during the mourning period.

Ms Rita Odoom, Administrative Executive at the Consulate of the Republic of Seychelles, expressed the condolences of Seychelles to Ghana and the bereaved families, affirming solidarity with the nation.

Paulino Choty, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of South Sudan, extended condolences on behalf of the Government and people of South Sudan, describing the incident as a tragic loss and affirming his country’s support for the bereaved families.

Mbomba extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the Government of Ghana, emphasising the significant contributions the late statesmen made to national development.

MTN Ghana becomes headline sponsor for Black Stars, three other national football teams

0

MTN Ghana has been unveiled as the headline sponsor for all four of Ghana’s national football teams — the Black Stars, Black Queens, Black Satellites, and Black Starlets — in a landmark partnership that signals renewed corporate backing for the sport.

The announcement was made by MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett at a ceremony in Accra on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Blewett expressed pride in associating with Ghana’s most celebrated sporting brands, noting that the deal reflects MTN’s deep-rooted commitment to sports development and national unity.

“Football is a passion that connects the whole country, and MTN is proud to be part of the journey to take our teams to greater heights,” Blewett said, adding that the sponsorship is about more than funding — it’s about inspiring the next generation of Ghanaian footballers.

The partnership will provide vital financial and logistical support to the senior men’s (Black Stars), senior women’s (Black Queens), under-20 men’s (Black Satellites), and under-17 men’s (Black Starlets) teams as they prepare for key tournaments and qualifiers.

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku hailed the sponsorship as a “timely boost” that will strengthen the teams’ competitiveness on both continental and global stages.

Coming at a crucial point in Ghanaian football’s resurgence, the MTN deal reflects a growing trend of major brands investing in African sports — a move fans hope will translate into on-field success for all four national sides.

Ghana dispatch: inquiry underway into fatal military helicopter crash that killed top government officials – JURIST

0

The government of Ghana on August 14, 2025 announced that it has invited American forensic experts to assist in investigating the August 6 military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers. The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the recovery of the flight data and cockpit voice recorders, met with the Ghana Journalists Association to urge responsible reporting, and pledged transparency in the probe. On August 15, a full state and military funeral will take place at Black Star Square in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

The helicopter crashed on August 6, 2025, in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight occupants, including high-ranking government officials. The Harbin Z-9 military helicopter was en route from Accra to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining operation when it abruptly disappeared from radar.

Among the deceased were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice-Chair Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Air Force crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

In response to the tragedy, President Mahama declared a national mourning period of three days, during which flags were flown at half-mast. The bodies of the victims were transported to Accra, with some requiring DNA identification tests in South Africa, leading to delays in burial, particularly for Muslim victims. In a show of regional support, the President of Sierra Leone arrived in Ghana to offer condolences and solidarity during this period of national mourning.

A Board of Inquiry has been established to investigate the crash. Both the flight data and cockpit voice recorders have been recovered and are pending analysis. Aviation experts have advocated for the involvement of Ghana’s Accident Investigation Board in the probe to ensure impartiality, given that the military is currently leading the investigation. The government has committed to a full and transparent inquiry as the nation observes a period of mourning.

As a Ghanaian, this news has left me unmoored. The loss is profound, and the circumstances surrounding these deaths are both shocking and painful. I remember seeing the late Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed in parliamentary sessions—energetic, articulate, and at times playfully sharp, famously referring to the minority as a “micro minority.” He carried a warmth in his demeanor. The other victims, though known to me only indirectly, were no less valued. No one should ever have to endure such a tragedy. The visible grief of the President underscored the depth of the nation’s sorrow.

In her book called “Things in Nature Merely Grow,” Yiyun Li recalls a colleague’s comforting words after she experienced personal loss, “Your losses are indeed epic and unfathomably hard; no language of mine can meet that.” Li reflected on those words, observing, “And yet life is still to be lived, inside tragedies, outside tragedies, and despite tragedies.”

This national tragedy Ghana is currently reeling from is the kind of loss that feels plucked from the realm of Shakespearean or ancient Greek tragedy, where fate is merciless, the fall is immense, and the chorus of grief belongs to the entire community. And yet here, the horror has a modern face: lives not only cut short, but bodies charred beyond recognition—an end so brutal and gory it sears itself into the national memory.

May they rest in peace—for God and country.

‘I was just hurt because I couldn’t be at the vigil’

LilWin is a popular Kumawood actor and producer LilWin is a popular Kumawood actor and producer

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has responded to the backlash following some accusations he made against the organisers of the late Daddy Lumba’s candlelight vigil.

The controversy erupted when the Creative Arts Agency (CAA) scheduled the tribute for Highlife legend Daddy Lumba at Black Star Square on August 2, 2025, the same date as the premiere of Lil Win’s latest film, ‘Ibrahim Traoré’.

The infuriated actor cum producer took to social media to lambast the decision, accusing the agency of attempting to sabotage his premiere.

Netizens slam LilWin over insensitive comment made against Lumba

Lil Win’s initial use of the word “sabotage” to describe the clash sparked intense backlash, with many Ghanaians accusing him of disrespecting the music icon’s memory.

However, in an exclusive interview with ‘Graphic Showbiz’, the actor clarified his position, stating that the clash rather affected his opportunity to attend the vigil and wasn’t about his movie.

“Honestly, it wasn’t about losing ticket sales because the movie premiere had already gained massive attention. Promotions were going well and everyone knew something big was on the way. Unfortunately, just a week before the premiere, we lost our legend, Daddy Lumba, which was a heartbreaking moment for all of us.

“To my surprise, his candlelight vigil was scheduled on the same day as my premiere. I believe many Ghanaians didn’t realise this until I pointed it out. I didn’t mention it because of my movie, but because I’m a huge fan of Daddy Lumba and I deeply admire him.

“I was torn between my premiere and the vigil of my idol and people misunderstood me. I wasn’t angry because of my premiere, I was just hurt because I couldn’t be at the vigil. I wanted to pay my respects, too,” he explained.

Despite the controversy, the premiere proved successful, attracting high-profile attendees including Burkina Faso’s Ambassador to Ghana David Kabre with his military delegation, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene and industry colleagues like actress Vivian Jill and musician Kweku Flick.

Asiedu Nketiah says NDC will contest Akwatia by-election Asiedu Nketiah says NDC will contest Akwatia by-election

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has assured the opposition New Patriotic Party that, although the NPP has officially pulled out from the by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency, the NDC will fully participate in the upcoming by-election in Akwatia.

It will be recalled that the Akwatia parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the member of parliament for the area, Ernest Kumi.

As required, the Electoral Commission declared the seat vacant and set September 2, 2025, as the date for the by-election to elect a member of parliament to represent the constituency.

Both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party have elected their respective candidates to represent them in the elections.

Politics of Tuesday, 12 August 2025Source: www.ghanaweb.comWe expect NDC to exit Akwatia contest as we have done for Tamale Central – Nana B

The NPP endorsed Solomon Kwame Asumadu as their parliamentary candidate, while the NDC elected Bernard Bediako Baidoo as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the September 2 elections.

However, the death of Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash last week will necessitate a by-election in the Tamale Central constituency, where he was the member of parliament.

Though the EC is yet to declare the seat vacant and set a date for a by-election as the law requires, the NPP has officially declared its position on the matter, saying it has withdrawn from such an election.

Meanwhile, the NDC has affirmed its preparedness to contest the Akwatia by-election, refusing to reciprocate the gesture of political comradeship the NPP has extended to it in the upcoming by-election in Akwatia, where the late MP was on the ticket of the NPP.

Some party bigwigs of the NPP led by the general secretary, Justin Frimpong-Kodua paid an official courtesy call on the NDC to commiserate with the party following the tragic death of some of their members in a helicopter crash that killed all eight persons onboard on August 6, 2025.

At the meeting, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said, “We thank you for withdrawing from contesting the Tamale Central by-election.”

He proceeded to say, “We wish to state that we shall contest the Akwatia by-election.”

Touching on the security on the day of the election, he said, “What we must recognise is that all these threats from certain youth regarding the election will ultimately lead to consequences that we will all have to face.

“Let us collectively take the necessary measures to ensure that peace is maintained,” he concluded.

BoG moves to reduce credit risk, enhance liquidity

0

The Bank of Ghana is unveiling a robust set of regulatory reforms aimed at enhancing banking sector stability by addressing credit risks and liquidity shortfalls.

These measures are designed to fortify risk governance and improve resilience in Ghana’s financial system.

The Bank of Ghana has rolled out a set of regulatory reforms aimed at strengthening the resilience of the banking sector.

A new interest rate risk framework will allow earlier detection of vulnerabilities, while a liquidity coverage rule now requires banks to hold enough high-quality liquid assets to withstand 30 days of stress.

Governance and risk management standards have been tightened, with updated rules on marketing conduct, foreign exchange compliance, capital planning, and stress testing.

The central bank is also shifting from heavy reliance on the Cash Reserve Ratio to more dynamic open-market operations, including the introduction of a 273-day sterilisation bill to manage liquidity and reinforce policy signals.

These reforms reflect the Bank of Ghana’s holistic commitment to strengthening financial stability and aligning with international standards.

Enhanced liquidity rules and sophisticated interest rate management tools will support increased credit to the private sector, especially following recent policy rate cuts.

Meanwhile, the move to dynamic OMOs suggests better control over monetary transmission and systemic flexibility.

Alex Kotey hints at possible VAR introduction in Ghana Premier League

0

Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alexander Kotey, has suggested that the long-delayed introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Ghana Premier League could soon be revisited, following the arrival of Adesa Production Limited (APL) as the league’s new broadcast partner.

APL was officially unveiled by the GFA ahead of the 2025/26 football season, taking over production duties for the league.

Speaking to Akoma FM, Kotey explained that the main barrier to implementing VAR in past seasons had been the substandard quality of league broadcasts.

“We could not implement VAR in the past because the league’s broadcasting was not up to standard. For VAR to work effectively, you need excellent broadcasting,” he noted.

Kotei expressed optimism that the enhanced coverage provided by APL could pave the way for trials of the technology in the near future.

“With the new broadcaster, we believe that in the coming matches we will then know whether to start using the VAR or not,” he said.

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season is set to kick off on September 12.

Sexual violence surged amid war in DRC’s North Kivu last year: UN

0

Healthcare providers in the war-torn eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) treated more than 17,000 victims of sexual violence over just five months last year, according to a United Nations report.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s annual report on conflict-related sexual violence, released on Thursday, said the cases were registered in the province of North Kivu between January and May last year, as fighting between Congolese forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels intensified.

“Many survivors sought care after violent sexual attacks, including penetration with objects, perpetrated by multiple perpetrators,” said the report, which charted crimes like rape, gang rape and sexual slavery.

The conflict, which has killed thousands this year alone and displaced millions, is still ongoing despite a Qatar-mediated agreement between DRC and M23 last month that was supposed to pave the way to a ceasefire, running parallel to United States efforts to broker peace between Kinshasa and Kigali.

Last year’s figure marked a continued surge in sexual violence as the Rwanda-backed M23 rampaged through the east, with a total of 22,000 cases registered throughout 2023. That figure was more than double the previous year’s tally.

In 2023, the spike in violence occurred as the conflict spilled over from North Kivu into South Kivu, forcing UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO to withdraw from the latter.

The report said that MONUSCO’s operations narrowed, “owing to military operations and widespread insecurity”. The mission had documented 823 cases of sexual violence in 2024, affecting 416 women, 391 girls, seven boys and nine men.

The UN said that 198 of last year’s cases were perpetrated by DRC “state actors”, including the army. It found that “M23 elements”, which “continued to receive instructions and support from the Rwanda Defence Force”, were implicated in 152 cases.

According to the report, survivors reported that they were exposed to the threat of sexual violence while searching for food in the fields and areas around displacement sites.

Many displaced women had resorted to prostitution to survive, “highlighting the nexus between food insecurity and sexual violence”.

Denis Mukwege, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for his work combating sexual violence in DRC, told The Times newspaper this year: “When you have people raping with complete immunity – and think they can go on and on without any consequence, nothing will change.”

Guterres’s report charted violations in 21 countries, with the highest numbers recorded in DRC, the Central African Republic, Haiti, Somalia and South Sudan.

While women and girls made up 92 percent of victims, men and boys were also targeted.

Fast walking is a key to longevity, research shows

0

Too busy to go to the gym? Don’t worry — you can stay healthy by incorporating at least 15 minutes of fast walking into your everyday routine, new research suggests.

In general, it’s recommended that people commit to 150 minutes of moderate activity per week to see sufficient health benefits, said Dr. Wei Zheng, the study’s corresponding author.

But if 150 minutes is too difficult to manage, fast walking for a minimum of 15 minutes every day can have the same health benefits.

Zheng and a team of researchers recruited mostly low-income and Black study participants from 2002 to 2009, according to the study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.

The nearly 85,000 participants were given a comprehensive questionnaire about their exercise habits, average time spent working out, walking speed and health. Then the participants completed a questionnaire about 16 years later, and the analysis began in 2023.

We know “fast walking is good compared to slow walking,” but there isn’t much research on how many minutes you should spend fast walking on average, said Zheng, director of the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center and the Anne Potter Wilson Professor in Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

On average, study participants who fast walked for at least 15 minutes every day saw a nearly 20% reduction in premature death compared with a 4% reduction among participants who walked slowly for a total of more than three hours a day.

“We’ve actually known for quite a long time that walking speed correlates with outcomes, meaning the faster you walk, the better you do. And it certainly makes sense, because you can imagine, somebody who’s in really bad shape is probably not going to be able to walk very quickly,” said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver. He was not involved in the study.

How walking can impact your health

Walking has health benefits, such as managing weight and sugar intake, reducing the risk of cancer, easing joint pain, and boosting immune function.

Health experts know that when people are exercising regularly, blood vessels can relax and dilate a bit better. And then we also know that exercise is quite good for cholesterol, so it seems to lower cholesterol, and then overall, it reduces the risk of cancer and things that would otherwise hurt people,” Freeman said.

Walking daily can also lower the risk of dementia or cognitive decline in people predisposed to developing Alzheimer’s, according to recent research.

Engaging in daily physical activity, such as walking, promotes better sleep and reduces inflammation, which improves brain structure, according to the Piedmont Medical Center in South Carolina.

“I want to emphasise that these exercises, no matter slow or fast, all confirm some benefit,” Zheng said. “But what we find is that fast walking as little as 15 minutes a day confirms substantiated benefits.”

Fast walking has been found to have specific benefits, such as decreasing risk of heart failure, arrhythmias and type 2 diabetes.

“(T)he thought is that exercise has a very big effect on blood pressure, as you may know, and blood pressure, it is one of the more exponential risk factors that we have, for roughly every 20 points blood pressure goes above 120 (what is considered normal or healthy), the risk of a cardiac event roughly doubles,” Freeman said. “So, it’s a super potent and exponential risk factor, and we know that regular exercise lowers that.”

Get your heart pumping

In general, you can tell you’re fast walking when you’re able to talk but not sing, according to the United Kingdom’s National Health Service.

Alternatively, you can increase your walking pace by a couple of steps and track it with a metronome, according to a July study.

“I usually recommend that they get up before work, and they go for a brisk walk or a bike or a swim, or they do some high-intensity interval training, whatever it is that they’re into,” Freeman said. People can go to “a rec center, or they walk outside, if it is safe, or whatever it may be, and just weave it into their day.”

Following good walking form, such as standing tall with your shoulders back and swinging your arms, can help prevent backaches, make it easy to breath and keep you balanced.

“Walking is a full body movement. It is not just about your lower body. It’s not just one step in front of the one foot in front of the other,” said Dana Santas, a certified strength and conditioning specialist and mind-body coach in professional sports, in a previous article.

“Your arm swing is a huge part involved in the mechanics of walking. So, you want to have an arm swing that’s coordinated with your foot movement, so it’s opposing,” she added.

Want to take it up a notch? When doing any form of exercise, try to practice conscious or nasal breathing, which is when you inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. This helps regulate blood pressure and can prevent hypertension, according to Santas.

Tunisian side attempts late hijack of Abdul Karim’s Hearts of Oak move

Talented midfielder Abdul Karim Talented midfielder Abdul Karim

Hearts of Oak’s pursuit of talented midfielder Abdul Karim has hit a potential snag, as a Tunisian club has stepped in with a late attempt to hijack the deal.

Karim, who recently was believed to have completed his medical with the Phobians, was widely expected to sign and seal his move this week.

However, fresh interest from North Africa has left his transfer hanging in the balance.

Reports indicate that the Tunisian side has made direct contact with the player’s representatives, hoping to lure him away from the Ghana Premier League giants with an improved offer.

For now, Karim’s switch to Hearts of Oak remains unresolved despite the advancement in talks. Adding to the twist, the midfielder is reportedly set to leave Accra for Kumasi, sparking speculation over his next move.

Kay has been on the radar of multiple clubs following his strong performances last season, and his decision in the coming days could be pivotal.

Phobian fans will be anxiously watching developments, hoping the management can fend off the foreign interest and get their man.

Ghana prepares to bid farewell to eight fallen heroes in solemn state funeral

The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others

Ghana will on Friday pause in grief and unity to bid final farewell to the eight patriots who died in a tragic helicopter crash at Adansi in the Ashanti Region last Wednesday.

A solemn state funeral will be held at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra at 0730 hours, bringing together the nation’s leadership, the bereaved families, and citizens from all walks of life to honour their memory.

The eight heroes lost their lives in the line of duty when their helicopter went down en route to the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi, on August 6, 2025.

The accident claimed the lives of Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.

The rest were Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of National Disaster Management Organisation, Squadron Leader Peter Anala of the Ghana Air Force, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu of the Ghana Air Force, and Sergeant Ernest Addo of the Ghana Air Force.

The State, on August 10, held an Islamic State burial for the late Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed. Their bodies were interred at the Military Cemetery at Burma Camp.

The passing of the eight compatriots stirred a wave of national mourning and reflection.

With flags flying at half mast, institutions and groups bearing direct relationship with the victims have held separate vigils and ceremonies to honour their memories.

The nation ended three-days of national mourning with a memorial ceremony in honour of the eight heroes at the forecourt of the State House last Saturday evening.

President John Dramani Mahama has rallied the nation to move from grieving to accepting the loss, and described the crash as unpredictable and violent.

He urged the nation to transform the sorrow into a catalyst for action and dedication to the ideals the eight compatriots stood for.

The victims of the crash served Ghana with their last breath and, thus, it was the sacred duty of every Ghanaian to continue that service to build the “Ghana we wanted,” the President said.

“We must not only mourn as one but commit to healing as one.”

Friday’s national farewell is expected to be a sombre reflection on the lives and legacies of the eight patriots and reaffirm the nation’s appreciation to the sacrifices of the departed souls and unite the country beyond mourning to building resilience.

Announcing arrangements for the state funeral at a press conference on Thursday, Stan Dogbey, the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, said the funeral would be largely military service under the auspices of the Ghana Armed Forces.

“The service will largely be a military service; it will be conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces and there will be three parts to the funeral programme.”

“We will have the pre-burial service during which period some tributes will be read. We will have Qu’ran recitations during that period.”

“And the second part will be the main funerals and burial service,” he said.

The bodies of the six other victims would be interred at the Military Cemetery at Tse Addo, near Burma Camp after the burial service, Dogbey added.

Thousands of sympathisers are expected to join the ceremony as the nation paid her last respect to the eight fallen heroes whose patriotism would be remembered in the nation’s history.

The Government has assured that adequate security measures were in place to guarantee the safety of mourners.

Advertising Association of Ghana pays tribute to helicopter crash victims

0

As the nation continues to mourn the tragic loss of eight persons who died in a recent helicopter crash, the Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has joined the many institutions and organizations paying tribute at the designated flower-laying gardens.

Following the official conclusion of the three-day national mourning period, members of the AAG, led by their President, Andrew Ackah, laid flowers in honour and offered prayers for their peaceful rest.

Speaking during the solemn ceremony, Mr. Ackah extended heartfelt condolences to the President of the Republic, the bereaved families, and the entire nation, noting that the loss was not only personal to the families but deeply felt across government and society.

“This is a big loss—not only to their families—but to the presidency, the government, and to the citizenry of the country,” Mr. Ackah said.

“It is not just a tragedy; personally and physically it breaks the heart, mind, and will of the people. But we need to be strong, and that is why we are here—to commiserate with the government and the entire nation.”

He emphasized that the AAG was present in solidarity and committed to supporting the national healing process in any way possible.

As the country prepares to lay the fallen officers to rest, he called on all Ghanaians to reflect on their sacrifice and the values they upheld.

“This is not about politics; it is about service to the nation and the thumbprints and footprints these men left in the sands of time. We should pick up where they left off and use their legacy for the greater good of Ghanaians.”

Mr. Ackah also drew a connection between the association’s work and broader national issues, particularly the ongoing fight against illegal mining, or “galamsey”, which has devastating effects on the environment and public health.

“We have strong connections with the media and have been helping amplify the dangers of illegal mining. It’s not just about the environment—it affects our physical health and wellbeing. We’re committed to continuing this fight.”

He further highlighted internal challenges facing the advertising industry, likening the unregulated installation of billboards to a form of “galamsey” within their own sector.

“We’re also fighting the illegal mounting of billboards by unscrupulous actors, which poses serious risks to pedestrians and motorists alike. It’s a fight for safety, order, and integrity in our profession—just as it is in every part of national life.”

The late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, Asantehemaa The late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, Asantehemaa

For about eight years of her reign, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, Asantehemaa, was very much aware of the challenges facing her people in the modern

situation and blended her traditional roles to address some of the current problems facing the present generation.

Her reign was marked by quiet, yet impactful service – supporting maternal and child health, advocating breastfeeding, assisting vulnerable families and providing resources to hospitals, including the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Manhyia government hospital, all in Kumasi.

Nana Sarfo Kantanka, a Historian at the Manhyia palace, speaking to the Ghana News Agency on some of the achievements of the late Asantehemaa, pointed out that, Nana Konadu Yiadom carried this mantle with grace, compassion, and unwavering devotion to her people.

“Her generosity lifted burdens and restored dignity to countless individuals.

She was the living embodiment of Ashanti womanhood: a custodian of tradition, a peacemaker in times of conflict, and a guiding light for both men and women in public service”, he told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi.

He said even at nearly a century of life, Nana Konadu Yiadom’s presence commanded respect as she stood to welcome visiting monarchs and dignitaries, a testament to her enduring strength and loyalty to the Asante throne.

Nana Sarfo Kantanka explained that, as the Asante custom and traditions demanded, the Asantehemaa, occupied a position of profound significance and authority, serving as a pivotal figure within both the political and spiritual spheres of the Asante Kingdom.

She functioned as a guardian of legitimacy for successors to the throne, a custodian of traditions, and a mediator in disputes, particularly those pertaining to women.

He said in her capacity as Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom undertook essential roles in the traditional governance of the Asante Kingdom and served as a senior royal advisor to the Asantehene, as well as a custodian of the Asante Kingdom’s matrilineal royal lineage, a role traditionally linked to advising the king.

She acted as a senior royal advisor to the Asantehene, providing counsel on matters of state and tradition and ensured the proper observance of these customs and traditions in the actions of the Asantehene.

Speaking on the general authority of an Asantehemaa, Nana Sarfo Kantanka pointed out that, Asantehemaa possessed the authority to intervene in and mediate conflicts, especially those involving women or domestic affairs, and can even intercede in matters presented before the King.

Nana Konadu Yiadom, who died on August 07, 2025, at the age of 98, ruled for eight years on the stool.

One arrested in foiled mobile money robbery at Kpentoug Junction

0

A swift community effort supported by security forces on Tuesday evening led to the arrest of a suspect in an attempted mobile money robbery near Kpentoug Junction in Bunkpurugu, North East Region.

The incident occurred between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. when two masked men allegedly attacked a female mobile money agent from Jilig No. 2 in the Jilig Electoral Area.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, who had closed from work and was heading home, was ambushed by the robbers, who blocked her path and tried to snatch her bag containing cash.

Despite being physically assaulted, the woman resisted and refused to let go of the bag.

Her determination, coupled with the timely intervention of a passing tricycle (Motor King) driver—who flashed his lights and rushed towards the scene—forced the assailants to flee.

The tricycle driver pursued the suspects but was reportedly threatened by them.

He quickly alerted others, prompting a coordinated chase involving community members, police, and military personnel.

The pursuit stretched from Kpentoug Junction to Nyamwai, where residents managed to intercept and apprehend one suspect.

The second suspect, however, escaped and remains at large.

The arrested suspect is now in police custody, and a manhunt is ongoing for the fugitive.

Court discharges two in alleged land fraud case

0

The Circuit Court in Accra has discharged Alberta Abi Amartey and Emmanuel Anang Yemoh in a case involving their alleged role in defrauding a lawyer, Solomon Aubin, of GH¢190,000 over land sales.

This followed the striking out of the matter for want of prosecution.

Presiding Judge Kwabena Kodua Obiri-Yeboah gave the ruling on Wednesday, April 21, last year, after noting that the prosecution had failed to file the necessary processes despite earlier warnings.

The third accused person, Philip Addogah, was absent from court.

In October 2023, the two were granted GH¢150,000.00 bail each, accused of conspiring with Addogah to obtain the money from Mr Solomon Aubin under the pretext of selling six litigation-free plots at Abokobi for a church project.

The complainant later faced claims of ownership from the Brekusu and Akrodey families, leading to the demolition of part of a fence wall he had started building.

The Prosecution earlier accused the three of having known that the land was under litigation before the transaction.

I used to say my colleagues would envy me during graduation – UDS student heartbroken over Murtala Mohammed’s demise

0

A Level 400 medical student at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, Sulemana Wakila, has painfully recounted how she had anticipated the presence of the late Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed at her graduation.

Wakila, who is among 47 medical students the late Minister and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central had offered scholarships to in order to complete their studies, said that the late MP played a fatherly role in their lives, treating them like his biological children.

According to her, Dr. Murtala had assured them that he would support them whenever the need arose, a promise he kept until his untimely passing.

Wakila shared this in an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on Changes, as she fondly recalled how she first crossed paths with the late MP.

“A neighbour heard the news of him saying that he was going to support all the medical students in his constituency. So he scheduled a date to meet all of us. At that time, we had already paid our fees and had admission.

“The first time he paid, it was actually a refund, and he promised that he was going to continually support us every year. He made it known to us that aside from the fees, he would help us with our personal needs if we communicated with him.

“So for us, he was like a father figure, a mentor and was available for us. There’s no way you would call or text, and he would see without returning it. There’s no way you can tell him something he could solve, and he would leave it unattended.

“We were positive that he was going to help us till the end. He made statements like he was going to support us till the very end, and sometimes I would be just so happy that on my graduation day I’m going to be the envy of everyone because I knew very well that if I was to graduate and I called, he was going to honour,” Wakila shared.

The news of the late minister’s demise came as a heavy blow and has left her shattered, but she remains solemn and confident that he is in a better place.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has promised to take over the responsibility of covering their fees, but Wakila believes it will never be the same as the care and support they received from Dr. Murtala.

“I know that the honourable has said he’s going to take the responsibility of paying our fees, but I know that it can never be the same again. We’ve lost someone that we actually had hopes in.

The MP, Dr. Alhaji Murtala Ibrahim Mohammed, who also served as the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, was among those who tragically lost their lives in the recent Z-9 military helicopter crash that occurred at Adansi in the Ashanti Region.

The incident also claimed the lives of several other high-profile individuals, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East and Deputy NADMO Director; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC and former Kumasi Mayor.

Additionally, three crew members perished in the crash: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Sarkodie, Castro and Fuse ODG shine on Billboard’s Top 50 Afrobeats Songs of All Time

Fuse ODG, Castro and Sarkodie Fuse ODG, Castro and Sarkodie

Ghana’s music scene has secured a milestone as three of its brightest stars, Sarkodie, Castro (feat. Sarkodie), and Fuse ODG, landed spots on Billboard’s “50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All Time” list.

The list, compiled by Billboard staffers and contributors worldwide, celebrates the genre’s most influential and groundbreaking tracks.

The list was released in instalments throughout August, with the top ten to be released in the third week of the month.

It featured classic songs from various Nigerian artistes, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide etc.

Surprisingly, two Ghanaian songs made it to the list, solidifying the Ghanaian sound as a global shaker.

Ghana’s Standout Entries

Sarkodie ft. Castro – “Adonai” (No 19)

The 2014 highlife-infused banger, produced by Killbeatz, earned its place as a crossover anthem, blending Sarkodie’s rapid-fire Twi rap with Castro’s soulful vocals.

Its inclusion marks a posthumous honour for Castro, whose legacy continues to resonate. The track’s fusion of Ghanaian rhythms and Afrobeats’ percussive energy solidified its global appeal, granting it a place on the list.

Fuse ODG ft Itz Tiffany” (No 18)

Fuse ODG’s 2013 breakout hit is on number 18. The track, which popularised the Azonto dance craze globally, is credited with bridging Ghanaian sounds to international audiences, paving the way for Afrobeats’ chart dominance. Its infectious log-drum beat and pidgin lyrics became a blueprint for Afro-fusion.

“Adonai” is the only Ghanaian rap collaboration on the list, while Fuse ODG’s “Azonto” represents the Azonto movement’s global takeover.

Though Billboard’s full list (Nos. 10–1) is yet to be revealed, watchers are still speculating which Ghanaian songs may make it to the top ten.

Kerley to contest anti-doping provisional suspension

American Olympic-medal winning sprinter Fred Kerley is fighting his suspension American Olympic-medal winning sprinter Fred Kerley is fighting his suspension

American Olympic-medal winning sprinter Fred Kerley is fighting his provisional suspension for violating anti-doping whereabouts rules.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced the suspension on Tuesday.

Three missed drug tests or whereabouts failures over 12 months are deemed to be a violation.

According to the organization, a whereabouts failure occurs when athletes fail to provide, or update, their location to be reached for out-of-competition testing. The sanction is two years of ineligibility or a reduction to at least 12 months, depending on their level of fault.

“Kerley strongly believes that one (or) more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location,” read a statement from the office of Los Angeles-area attorney Howard L. Jacobs.

“Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel.”

The statement was posted to Kerley’s X account on Tuesday.

Kerley won the bronze medal in the 100-meter at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a silver in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He also has won five total medals at the past four world championships in either individual or relay events.

A 30-year-old Texas native, Kerley pulled out of the USA Track and Field Championships last month, citing a difficult year.

“The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track. No USATF Champs this year. Thanks to all my supporters,” he posted.

Kerley was arrested in Florida in May and charged with touch or strike battery after his former girlfriend alleged he struck her in the face with a closed fist.

At the time, his attorney told The Athletic that Kerley was arrested without a “thorough investigation.”

“Fred never battered anyone,” Richard L. Cooper said in a statement to The Athletic. “We are focused on working with prosecutors to show that this arrest was a mistake and no charges should be filed. I am confident in that goal.”

Ghanaian pressure group petitions EC to postpone Akwatia by-election following helicopter crash

0

Elections Watch Ghana, a pressure group, has petitioned the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to exercise its discretionary powers to postpone the September 2 by-election in Akwatia.

According to the group, the recent helicopter crash that resulted in the loss of eight lives last Wednesday in Adansi-Akrofuom is still fresh in the minds of Ghanaians.

They argue that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently grieving, making it challenging for them to campaign effectively.

Mike Ewusi Arkoh, Convenor of the group, emphasized on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 97.5FM that the EC is empowered under Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution to exercise its discretionary powers in a fair and just manner.

He argued that a brief postponement of the by-election would enable the NDC to adequately prepare, ensuring a level playing field for all parties involved.

Arkoh noted that granting this request would enable the EC to uphold the principles of fairness and impartiality, which are essential to the growth and development of Ghana’s democracy.

He further stressed that Section 13 of the Elections Act, 2002 (Act 651) empowers the EC to make regulations and take necessary steps for the conduct of elections anywhere in Ghana. This section, he added, also empowers the EC to adjust the timelines for the election scheduled for September 2, 2025.

Mark Ewusi Arkoh also referenced an EC statement that eulogized the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and his contributions to the EC. He claimed that “never has this happened in Ghana where an EC will speak so well of someone.”

He stressed that “the NDC is demoralized, and their preparations for the Akwatia by-election are not the best due to the death of the gallant eight.

“That is why we are appealing to the EC to postpone it briefly to allow the NDC to organize themselves well. It is not just about the NDC. If it happened to any other party, we would have spoken about it.”

Catholic Church holds requiem mass for Omane Boamah, Sqn. Ldr. Anala – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Catholic Church in Ghana has held a solemn vigil at Christ the King Parish in Accra in honour of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, who were devoted members of the church during their lifetimes.

The evening was filled with hymns, moving tributes, and words of comfort, as clergy, military personnel, grieving families, and members of the public gathered to pay their final respects.

In an emotional tribute, Dr. Omane Boamah’s wife described her late husband as a pillar of strength for their family.

“Despite your busy schedule as a medical doctor and later in your political roles, you either bathe the children every morning or dress them up when I bathe them. You were always their favourite teacher. You always asked what I would do when you were not around. I never answered you. Until today, I don’t have an answer. I will, with God’s help, take care of mommy and the children. Knowing who you are, I believe you will be looking down on us to guide us through the heavens,” she stated.

Similarly, the wife of Squadron Leader Anala, paying tribute to her husband, described him as the answer to her prayers.

“From the moment I met him, my life has not been the same. My husband was a hardworking man. I have never seen a person more dedicated to his work and household. Peter told me that he will never allow me to lift a finger because he will lift both hands for both of us, and true to his word, I have not had to struggle for anything,” she stated.

Dr. Omane Boamah and Squadron Leader Anala and six others lost their lives in a tragic helicopter crash in a forested area at Sikaman within the Adansi Akrofrom District of the Ashanti Region.

They died alongside Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, and four senior government officials while en route to the launch of the government’s Cooperative Mining Initiative in Obuasi.

The other officials who perished were Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and Deputy NADMO Director-General and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.

The vigil concluded with a solemn requiem mass, offering prayers for the souls of the departed and comfort for the grieving families, as the congregation reflected on the enduring impact of their lives and service to the nation.

‘You are irreplaceable, Edwardo’ – Children of Omane Boamah pay tribute – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

A sombre vigil at the Christ the King Parish in Accra on Thursday, August 14, was filled with emotion as the children of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, delivered a deeply moving tribute, describing him as “irreplaceable” and a father whose love, guidance, and compassion shaped their lives.

Speaking through emotions, they recounted the values he instilled in them, teaching that success was not measured only by personal achievements but by the lives touched along the way.

“Your love was steady, your love was gentle, and it was the warmth that filled our home,” they said.

They recalled his unwavering presence in their lives, even during official travels. “You called us every day when you travelled. You never missed our special moments. You taught us to dream big but stay grounded. You showed us that compassion is strength, but speaking the truth is an obligation, and that service to others is the greatest legacy one can leave,” they shared.

The tribute turned emotional as they struggled to come to terms with the sudden loss. “Daddy, why did you leave us so soon? Never in a million years would we have imagined this.

“Who will we call in the middle of the night when we have questions? Who will have the answers? You are irreplaceable, Edwardo,” they said, their voices breaking.

Dr. Omane Boamah was among eight people who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash. The accident also claimed the lives of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A state funeral for the victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, in Accra. However, Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed have already been laid to rest according to Islamic rites.

Three arrested for possessing, manufacturing illegal guns – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested three men in connection with the possession and manufacturing of locally made pistols in Shiashi, a suburb of Accra.

The suspects have been identified as 24-year-old dispatch rider Patrick Gyimah of Bawaleshie, 27-year-old electrical welder Emmanuel Osei Yeboah of Adenta Commando, and 29-year-old private security guard Charles Somuah of Ogbojo.

Police in a statement issued on August 14, and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, said on August 7, 2025, that a patrol team spotted Gyimah in a secluded area in Shiashi under suspicious circumstances.

A search revealed a locally manufactured pistol in his pocket. Gyimah allegedly told police he bought the weapon from Yeboah and Somuah at East Legon for GH₵2,000, paying GH₵800 upfront with the promise that documents for the firearm would be provided before completing payment.

The following day, Gyimah led officers to arrest Yeboah and Somuah at their homes. A search at Yeboah’s residence uncovered two more locally made pistols, a toy pistol, a BB 12 bore cartridge, and a jackknife. Police say Yeboah admitted to fabricating the three pistols and selling one to Gyimah.

The three have been charged with manufacturing firearms without authority, possession of firearms without authority, and abetment to the manufacture of firearms without authority, contrary to the Arms and Ammunition Act 1972 (NRCD 9).

They pleaded not guilty in court and were remanded into custody to reappear on August 22, 2025.

Supt. Juliana Obeng cautioned the public against the manufacture, sale, or possession of illegal firearms, warning that such acts are punishable under Ghanaian law.

She also urged citizens to report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station to help maintain peace and security.

Ghana prepares to bid farewell to eight fallen heroes in solemn state funeral

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, Aug. 14, GNA – Ghana will on Friday pause in grief and unity to bid final farewell to the eight patriots who died in a tragic helicopter crash at Adansi in the Ashanti Region last Wednesday.

Announcing arrangements for the state funeral at a press conference on Thursday, Mr Stan Dogbey, the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, said the funeral would be largely military service under the auspices of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The bodies of the six other victims would be interred at the Military Cemetery at Tse Addo, near Burma Camp after the burial service, Mr Dogbey added.

Thousands of sympathisers are expected to join the ceremony as the nation paid her last respect to the eight fallen heroes whose patriotism would be remembered in the nation’s history.

The Government has assured that adequate security measures were in place to guarantee the safety of mourners.

The judicial review, filed on June 23, 2025, targets a petition submitted by a group calling itself the Shining Stars of Ghana. The suspended Chief Justice’s legal team argues that the petition is flawed because the group is not a registered entity and the identities of its members remain unknown.

However, the Attorney-General, through Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, contends that these claims are baseless and should not prevent the committee established under Article 146 of the Constitution from continuing its work.

In documents filed at the High Court, the AG maintains that the Chief Justice’s motion should be struck out entirely.

“A body of persons—whether named or not named and, if named, by whichever name—needs not be incorporated or registered to exist at law,” the affidavit filed by State Attorney Reginald Nii Odoi states.

This is the second attempt by Justice Torkornoo to halt the work of the committee through the High Court’s powers of Judicial review.

An earlier judicial review sought to strike out all three petitions against her and to halt the Justice Pawmang Committee’s sittings for alleged violations of the rules of natural justice. That application was, however, dismissed by the High Court on grounds of an abuse of court processes and lack of jurisdiction.

Though an interpretation case related to the matter remains pending before the Supreme Court, an injunction application stemming from that case was also thrown out, allowing for the Article 146 proceedings to continue.

In his affidavit to the new application by Justice Torkonoo, the Attorney-General emphasises that the matters raised in the suspended Chief Justice’s application relate directly to the proceedings of the Article 146 committee, which are constitutionally mandated to be conducted in camera, not in open court.

“The issues raised by the originating motion are not admissible in this Honourable Court,” the AG’s office argued, reinforcing its position that the High Court has no jurisdiction over matters under Article 146.

Stunning Kampala Outfits Suitable For Married Women To Rock At Special Events

Kampala fabric, celebrated for its striking tie-dye designs and deep cultural significance, has transformed over time from a traditional staple into a modern fashion essential. Today, many married women choose Kampala attire to express confidence and style at weddings, birthdays, cultural gatherings, and thanksgiving events. Its charm lies not just in its vivid patterns, but also in its ability to convey a sense of maturity, sophistication, and pride in African roots.

One of the key reasons for Kampala’s growing appeal is its adaptability. The fabric can be tailored into a variety of stylish forms — from elegant gowns and sleek dresses to two-piece wrapper sets or trendy kaftan-like outfits. For women who prioritize modesty and grace, Kampala offers timeless styles that merge cultural authenticity with a modern fashion sense. Wearing a thoughtfully crafted Kampala outfit allows one to embody both dignity and individuality without compromising comfort.

Among the standout choices is the floor-length fitted gown, often designed with cape accents or layered sleeves. This design flatters the figure while adding an element of elegance and flair. The structured top provides a defined silhouette, while the flowing lower part adds a dramatic yet refined touch. Another popular look is an A-line gown with puff sleeves and side pleats — a softer, more romantic style ideal for church services or family celebrations.

Color selection plays a vital role in Kampala fashion. Shades like rich indigo, bright crimson, mustard gold, deep emerald, and burnt orange are frequently used to create bold, expressive pieces. The complexity of the dyeing process adds to the fabric’s visual appeal. When paired with clean, refined tailoring, these vibrant patterns make a powerful and regal fashion statement that effortlessly turns heads.

A delegation from the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, led by the Sector Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, joined many others from home and abroad to commiserate with the families and institutions mourning the victims of the helicopter crash.

The visit, which took place on Thursday, August 14, 2025, followed the tragic August 6 military helicopter crash in Adansi, which claimed the lives of senior government officials and military officers.

The delegation visited the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to extend their condolences to management and staff.

At MESTI and NADMO, the minister expressed her deep shock at the incident and its circumstances, noting that her visit was to offer the Ministry’s support and to empathise with them. She later signed the book of condolences in honour of the departed.

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, provided a detailed background to the incident, outlining those who were on board and explaining what transpired. He took the opportunity to caution the media and the public against fabricating stories about the tragedy, urging them to be considerate of the feelings of the bereaved families and the dignity of those who had passed away.

The NADMO Boss, Major Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (Rtd.), on his part, appreciated the Minister and her entourage for the visit, saying that such visits console them as they look forward to the final funeral rites, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 15, 2025 at the Black Star Square in Accra.

Also at NADMO, a Guard of Honour was mounted in recognition of the Trade Minister’s presence, after which she laid a wreath in remembrance of the fallen.

At the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), the Chief Director of the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Mr. Noah Tumfo, on behalf of the Minister, expressed his sorrow over the loss of the Minister for Environment and the other seven victims.

He emphasised that their passing was not only a loss to MESTI but also to the trade sector.

“The pain is one that will linger for a while with all of us. We are here to commiserate with you on behalf of our Minister. It is a national loss,” he said.

The Chief Director of MESTI, Madam Sweibatu Adams, in her response, expressed gratitude for the visit.

“It has not been easy, but your support and prayers have kept us going. We are very happy and grateful for your presence and support. The more people come, the more we feel consoled. Thank you on behalf of the Caretaker Minister and Deputy Minister,” she stated.
