A rampant, ruthless Barcelona produced a scintillating attacking performance to sweep aside Real Madrid 5-2 and secure the Spanish Super Cup.
The two rivals had set up an El Clasico with silverware on the line and it proved a captivating affair, with two dynamic forward lines showcasing their ability. Rocked early by a delightful Kylian Mbappe goal against the run of play, the Catalan club nonetheless ripped Real to ribbons in the first half with Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski to the fore as Pedri and Gavi pulled the strings.
Four first-half goals were followed by a fifth from the Barcelona captain just after the interval, putting them out of sight despite Wojciech Szczesny’s sending off. The goalkeeper saw red for a challenge on Mbappe after the Frenchman had surged away from the defence, and though Rodrygo converted the resulting free kick past replacement Inaki Pena, the defending champions had been left with too much to do on the same day that they lost top spot in La Liga to cross-city rivals Atletico.
Re-live all of the action from the final in our live blog below:

That is that – Barcelona win the Spanish Super Cup! Dented early by Kylian Mbappe’s goal, it was smooth cruising thereafter for Hansi Flick’s men as they moved up through the gears to accelerate out of sight with some wonderful football. That’s nine goals they’ve scored against Real Madrid in two meetings this season.

By an Executive Instrument dated 9th January 2025, the Ministries of Ghana, being the bulwark of the architecture of the civil service, were reviewed and re-aligned by President John Mahama, pursuant to the Civil Service Act, 1993, PNDCL 327.
The new Ministry for Sports & Recreation
Among the notable changes is the rebranding of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. This review and re-alignment appear well-reasoned, having incorporated input from technocrats with relevant experience and expertise.
It is a transformation that is both timely and promising, offering an opportunity to leverage sports as a tool for empowering Ghanaian youth and driving sustainable development.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In 2015, the United Nations led the global community in setting 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. A key strategy within this agenda is the deployment of sports as a tool for global peace and development.
Past re-alignments
Since independence, sports in Ghana have been variously aligned with education, science, culture, and youth. The recent alignment of sports with recreation, however, introduces a fresh approach that offers hope and new expectations for the youth.
Sports is predominantly patronised by the youth, making the destinies of youth and sports inextricably linked. For much of the Fourth Republic, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been a dominant feature of this industry.
International best practices
While the United States has no Ministry of Sports, most countries worldwide have government agencies akin to sports ministries. They include France, Turkey, Serbia, Belgium, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Malaysia, Iran, Australia, and Malawi, among others. Many of these countries align sports with youth affairs, following what appears to be the international best practice.
The rationale behind aligning sports with youth is grounded in global principles, including the 37th objective of the UN SDGs, which states:
“Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognise the growing contribution of sport to the realisation of development and peace, in its promotion of tolerance and respect, and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and young people, individuals and communities, as well as to health, education, and social inclusion objectives.”
The correlation between Sports and Youth
Successive governments have designed various programmes and policies towards achieving the UN SDGs. Over 90% of patrons of sporting activities in Ghana are the youth. This youthful demographic reflects the strong correlation between sports and youth development.
Re-alignment of Sports with Recreation
The new alignment of sports with recreation shifts focus from youth to health, well-being, and leisure. Countries like New Zealand, Samoa, and Zimbabwe have similar ministries combining sports with recreation. Ghana’s new Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment will now serve as a hub for youth-centred initiatives.
Health and well-being are critical to national prosperity. During the tenure of two former sports ministers, Messrs Arnold Quainoo and E.T. Mensah, Keep-Fit Clubs were instrumental in promoting fitness among adults and the middle class.
ET Mensah is a former sports minister who said sports is a big business
However, the growing prevalence of lifestyle diseases like hypertension and diabetes among younger populations calls for a national fitness initiative.
A designated monthly national fitness day could be a worthy consideration. A national fitness initiative may require the collaboration of the Ministry of Health.
Sports is a big business
Globally, sports has transitioned into a multi-billion-dollar industry, and Ghana is no exception. The new Ministry must acknowledge that sports is no longer a mere recreation but a significant business sector.
In 1993, recognising football’s economic potential, the Ghanaian government partnered with the Ghana Football Association to establish a Professional League Board (PLB), marking a shift towards professionalising premier league football.
Former Sports Minister E.T. Mensah’s mantra, “Sports is a big business,” remains as relevant today as it was over three decades ago. It is not a mere rhetoric.
Several government initiatives towards the achievement of this policy led to two major steps: first, a repeal of the Sports Decree, 1976, SMCD 54, and an enactment of the Sports Act, 2016, Act 934.
The government needs to drive the agenda of commercialisation and promotion of employment and job opportunities in the sports sector.
Benefits of sports
Sports generates thousands of private-sector jobs, especially for the youth.
Though the data surrounding the number of people directly or indirectly employed by the football sub-sector of sports in Ghana, it is estimated that about 20,000 are beneficiaries.
The Ghana Premier League employs about 20,000 people
This industry also enables young people to channel their energies productively, reducing the risk of delinquency and fostering a sense of purpose.
In addition to personal development, sports creates job opportunities for young people, spanning various roles such as players, coaches, administrators, and media personnel. The professionalisation of football, for instance, has opened avenues for youth employment and entrepreneurship.
Track and field, arm wrestling, boxing, tennis, table tennis, and numerous disciplines engage Ghanaian youth.
This new Ministry must consider incentives for private investment in sports to expand employment opportunities. Key aspects like professionalism, sponsorship, standards, and regulation require urgent attention to maximise the sector’s potential.
Foreign Exchange Earnings
Beyond recreation, sports is an engine for economic empowerment and a pathway to global opportunities.
I admit we would need the right data to appreciate its contribution to the inflow of foreign exchange into the country, but one cannot deny the fact that since the mid-1980s, Ghana has “exported” a good number of players to clubs in Europe for millions of foreign exchange as transfer fees.
FIFA regulations require five per cent of the transfer fee to be paid to the club(s) that nurture(s) a talent between the ages of 12 and 21.
Hence, the moves made by Abedi Pele, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan (who at one point was the world’s eighth-highest-paid player), Kwadwo Asamoah, Ayew brothers, Anthony Annan, etc., were a direct investment into Ghana’s economy.
When Thomas Partey was transferred from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal for a whopping £50m, five per cent of that money came directly to the clubs that contributed to his development.
Thomas Partey moved from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal
Other transfers of Ghanaian football players of repute include Mohammed Kudus, Ibrahim Osman, Kamaldeen Suleman, and Ernest Nuamah, just to mention a few.
These international transfers have generated significant foreign exchange for the nation and for clubs to develop more talent.
When these players return to the country, they are here with foreign exchange. No matter how little, a foreign exchange’s impact on our economy should be appreciated.
Furthermore in 2008, the Ghana Football Association signed a five-year contract of $22.5m with Glo Mobile Limited for sponsorship of the Black stars and Ghana Premeir League.
Infrastructure development
Through the hosting of international sporting tournaments, the infrastructure stock of the country has been enhanced, the most recent being the addition of sporting facilities and roads in Borteyman and the University of Ghana.
Borteyman sports complex served as the hub for African Games 2023
While initiatives like constructing AstroTurf pitches are commendable, more efforts are needed to preserve and expand community spaces for recreation and talent development. For instance, addressing the loss of playing fields in areas like Nima, which has produced football legends like Mohamed Polo and Mohammed Kudus, is essential for sustaining this talent pipeline.
Unity and national identity
This industry holds an unparalleled ability to unite people across political, ethnic, and religious divides. The unwavering support for Ghana’s national teams, particularly the Black Stars, during international competitions, exemplifies how sports foster national unity.
How can anyone forget how Ghanaians stayed awake all night to watch Azumah Nelson’s boxing bouts and rallied behind the national football teams? Sports bring Ghanaians together like no other endeavour.
Ghanaian fans cheer on Black Stars
Another variant of national unity can be promoted through the institution of community, district, regional, and national games across different disciplines of sports.
Research in South Africa has shown that during epic football games between rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, crime rates have dropped significantly because many criminals are at the stadium watching the game.
Tourism and global recognition
Sports promotes Ghana’s image on the global stage, serving as an effective tool for marketing the country. International tournaments have not only showcased Ghana’s sporting prowess but also boosted its tourism and cultural appeal.
The exposure garnered through sporting achievements has elevated the nation’s profile, clearing ambiguities about its identity and distinguishing it from similarly named countries like Guyana.
Through sports, some non-Africans have appreciated Ghana as a sovereign state, separate and distinct from Guyana in Central America. Investments in sports can position Ghana as a leading tourist and investment destination, as seen in countries like Qatar and Morocco.
A shift towards Recreation and Well-being
The alignment of sports with recreation is a novel approach, shifting the focus to health and well-being. Recreational activities such as keep-fit clubs, which thrived in the past, can be revitalised to combat rising lifestyle diseases like hypertension and diabetes. Designating a national fitness day monthly could further encourage healthy living among Ghanaians of all ages.
The Meadows Community Recreation Centre was part of an ambitious plan to build major rec centre facilities in all corners of the city. (City of Edmonton)
However, this focus on recreation should not overshadow the critical role of sports in driving development. The Ministry of Sports and Recreation must collaborate closely with the newly created Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment to ensure a balanced approach that maximises the potential of both domains.
Conclusion
The re-alignment of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is a unique opportunity to harness the transformative power of sports for national development. By prioritising youth development, fostering unity, and tapping into sports’ economic potential, Ghana can achieve sustainable development.
Sports is not just recreation; it is a tool for empowerment, unity, and economic growth. The challenge lies in ensuring that this re-alignment delivers on its promise to transform the lives of Ghanaians while contributing to national prosperity.

Accra, Jan 12, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Chief of Staff and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to evacuate food in warehouses at Tema to all Senior High Schools to aid the feeding of students.
“As we speak, we have a challenge currently with feeding students in secondary schools, as the GES insisted that schools must reopen on the 3rd of January, contrary to the advice of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools for a postponement,” he said.
“As a stopgap measure, I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate food that is currently held in warehouses in Tema.”
The President said this during the Christian National Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, at the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
He said food was imported by the immediate past government in response to the drought situation in Northern Ghana last year.
“But in this emergency, we need to use some of that food to feed our students,” he said.
President Mahama noted that education would be another cornerstone of the reset agenda, with a focus on improving infrastructure and providing resources for teachers and expanding access to technology for students.
As indicated in the 120-day plan, the government would convene a National Education Review Conference to dialogue on the challenges facing the various levels of Ghana’s educational system.
“This will help us forge a consensus on the way forward to achieve quality education,” the President noted.
The event was attended by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the First Lady Lordina Mahama, leading members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) such as Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman, Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary and the Party’s Members of Parliament.
Also in attendance were the clergy, including the Reverend Dr Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana; Rev Sam Korankye Ankrah, Apostle General of the Royalhouse Chapel; Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, Founder and Overseer of Christian Action Faith Ministries Worldwide; Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, Founder and Archbishop, Perez Chapel International, and Apostle Dr Isaac Owusu-Bempah of the Glorious Word Power Ministries International.
The others were Dr Lawrence Tetteh, Founder/President of Worldwide Miracle Outreach and a renowned global Evangelist; Bishop Salifu Amoako, the Founder and General Overseer of Alive Chapel International; Bishop Gideon Titi-Ofei, Presiding Bishop, Pleasant Place Church; and Prophet Akwasi Agyemang Prempeh, General Overseer, Springs of Joy Ministries International.
Member of Parliament for Bongo, Edward Abambire Bawa
The Member of Parliament for Bongo and a member of the 12-member committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to avert a looming energy crisis, Edward Abambire Bawa, has claimed that the country does not have the strategic fuel reserves required for national security purposes.
He made this claim on TV3’s The KeyPoint programme on January 11, 2024, while responding to a question from co-panellist lawyer Martin Kpebu.
Kpebu had asked why the country could not rely on strategic fuel reserves to address what has been described as a looming energy crisis, attributed to the Akufo-Addo government’s failure to purchase fuel for the nation’s energy needs.
Edward Bawa stated that the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), which is mandated to store a certain percentage of fuel for national security purposes, had not been fulfilling this responsibility.
“My brother, if you want me to be blunt, BOST was never putting any storage down… Usually, we say for the strategic stock, we should have at least six weeks of reserves. The truth of the matter is that BOST was never doing that.
“If you look at what civil society and others always say—that BOST should move away from competing with the BDCs and instead focus on executing their mandate of being strategic stockholders—unfortunately, we do not have that.
“Indeed, if we look at the current situation…SEND Power had diesel that could take us up to 20-something days, but that will not be enough,” he added.
His statement infuriated the other panellists on the show, who were shocked to learn that the country had no reserve fuel to rely on in the event of an emergency.

President John Mahama has announced immediate measures to tackle the growing food shortages in Senior High Schools (SHS) across Ghana.
Speaking at a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, 2025, Mahama acknowledged the challenges schools are facing in providing adequate meals for students.
“We have a challenge currently with feeding students in secondary schools,” President Mahama stated, highlighting the issue’s urgency.
As part of his response, the President has instructed the Chief of Staff to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to allocate and transport food supplies currently stored in warehouses in Tema. These stocks, which were initially imported to address previous drought conditions, will be redirected to ensure students’ nutritional needs are met without disruption to their education.
President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the integrity of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, emphasizing that logistical issues should not hinder students’ access to education.
The move comes after the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) raised alarms over the critical food situation, urging parents to supplement meals due to insufficient supplies. The government’s swift intervention is aimed at relieving the pressure on parents and school administrators while ensuring that educational activities continue smoothly.

Accra, Jan 12, GNA – The Government, acting on the directive of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), will soon launch an investigation into the National Cathedral Project to determine any misuse of state funds.
CHRAJ has directed the Government to audit the National Cathedral project and investigate whether there was any form of fraud.
President John Dramani Mahama said his Administration was enjoined to follow that directive and would soon activate such an investigation.
The President made this known at the Christian National Thanksgiving Service on Sunday at the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
Touching on the future of the project, President Mahama expressed the belief that all Christians in Ghana must forge a consensus on how to bring it into fruition without recourse to public funds.
“And this project must be achieved at a reasonable cost,” he said.
Given Ghana’s current circumstances, it made no sense to undertake such a project at a staggering sum of $400 million, he said.
“I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which serves all Christian denominations in Nigeria, was built at a cost of $30 million,” President Mahama said.
“I believe we can achieve this project at a much more reasonable figure, and together, we can raise the necessary funds. Such a reconsideration might even include changing the current site of the project.”
Regarding leadership, the President said leaders were called to serve with integrity and accountability.
“Proverbs 29:2 reminds us that when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice,” he said.
“And that’s why I pledge before you, my holy fathers, to lead a government that is transparent, that is accountable, and focused on justice and fairness, as you just advised us to.”
“We will stand in the fight against corruption relentlessly, knowing that it undermines the very fabric of our society.”
“Any persons who find themselves appointed to public office has to be made aware that they will be held to the highest ethical and professional standards.”

Speaking at a Christian National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), the President emphasised unity as the cornerstone of national development.
The service, which brought together clergy, government officials, and citizens from various backgrounds, was organised to express gratitude to God for the peaceful conduct of the December 7, 2024, general elections and to seek divine guidance for the President’s administration.
President Mahama, in his address, underscored the importance of unity and collaboration in fostering national growth.
He called on Ghanaians to rise above political, ethnic, and religious differences, urging them to embrace a collective vision for the country’s future.
“I stand here as a president for all of you regardless of your political, ethnic, or religious affiliation. This is a moment for Ghana. This is a moment for unity and a moment for us to put aside our differences and work together for the greater good of our dear nation.”

Rt Rev Dr Lt Col Divine Agbeko, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to eliminate what he described as “naughty stealing taxes.”
Dr Agbeko criticised the current tax policies, introduced by the outgone Akufo-Addo government, highlighting that they repeatedly tax the same money, burdening citizens.
Speaking at the induction service for Pr. Dr. Mrs. Salomey Praise Otami-Abutiate as Presbyter Executive of the General Assembly of the EPCG at the Elorm Parish in Ho, he suggested that the tollbooth tax should be reintroduced to maintain roads.
Dr Agbeko even offered to take charge of road tax collection, promising to build roads efficiently if given the opportunity.
“Take the naughty stealing taxes that can even tax money in your pocket after it has been taxed, they will tax it again. You want to send money, they will take it again. So, everywhere, they are just sucking from you. Take those naughty taxes away and do something better that will replace the tax.
“You can use the tollbooth tax to maintain roads. The tollbooth tax is not to be consumed by those who take the ticket and chop. If you like, give it to me. If you like give the road tax collection to me, and I will start building the roads. If you like try me,” he stated.
Acknowledging the challenges Mahama faces, Dr Agbeko emphasised the importance of learning from past mistakes.
He urged Mahama to avoid favoritism and cronyism, and to prioritise the interests of Ghana over individual gains.
Dr Agbeko stressed that Mahama must act in the best interest of the nation, rather than succumbing to pressures from friends, family, and cronies.
“Mahama will have a hard time, but with the help of God and learning from the past, the experience, he must not repeat those things for which he was labelled incompetent. He must not repeat them.
“He should not look into the faces of friends, families, and cronies and say you take here, you take here. That attitude will not help him. He must choose and do things in the interest of the good of Ghana. Not for an individual,” he said.
Mahama’s Ministry cuts driven by sentiment, not efficiency – Bright Simons
International Anti-Corruption campaigner, Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu has lauded the government’s ‘Operations Recover All Loot’ describing the initiative as a landmark decision that will stem the growing trend of corruption in the country.
President John Dramani Mahama launched the ORAL aimed at helping to reclaim misappropriated public funds and state properties.
Mr Ahenu also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Global Media Foundation, an anti-corruption and media advocacy non-profit organisation told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani that the “ORAL reflects President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to reset and turn the fortunes of the nation round.
“That is a bold and realistic intervention towards the fight against corruption and strengthening governance structures and President Mahama must therefore be commended for that,” he stated, saying, “the initiative truly underscores the government to reset the country”.
Mr Ahenu called on Ghanaians to support the government in that regard, noting that the ORAL remained critical step in ensuring that public resources were utilised for the benefit of all.
“The ORAL will empower anti-corruption agencies and legal institutions to aggressively pursue and recover assets that have been unlawfully acquired,” he stated, adding “by doing so public trust and confidence in the government’s ability to manage the nation’s resources would be deepened too”.
He highlighted the relevance of the ORAL saying, “recovering public misappropriated funds and properties is not just about justice, but also about redirecting the resources to vital sectors of the economy”.
“That will further have a direct and positive impact on the lives of citizens and thereby contribute to the nation’s progressive development,” he said stressing the need for collective approach in fighting corruption, which remained the bane of socio-economic development.
“By supporting ORAL, we are taking a stand for integrity and accountability in our society,” he stated, saying he was highly optimistic that the ORAL would transform the nation’s governance landscape.
Mr Ahenu called on the government to facilitate transparency and public involvement in the process to build a future where resources were safeguarded and used for the common good of the people.

The local cocoa industry is bracing for significant shifts this year as market dynamics and regulatory pressures converge.
Analysts’ projections at the beginning of the final quarter of 2024 suggested cocoa prices could rise to as high as US$9,600 per metric tonne (pmt) in 2025, due to tight global supply conditions. This figure was surpassed in December 2024, when prices reached US$11,925.
On January 8, 2025, March ICE NY cocoa futures closed at US$10,984.81 per metric tonne, reflecting a 1.68% decrease from the previous day. In December 2024, the global cocoa price reached US$10.32 per kilogram, marking a 30.73% increase from November 2024 and a 145.2% rise from December 2023.
The aforementioned constraints are exacerbated by adverse weather and illegal gold mining activities, which have reduced farmland availability.
This forecast follows a dramatic price surge in 2024 when cocoa prices nearly doubled by mid-November, reaching US$8,523 from an initial US$4,916—a 73.4% increase. The surge was driven by supply shortfalls in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, intensified by El Niño’s impact on yields and growing global demand for chocolate.
According to Databank’s 2025 projections, “The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), effective in early 2025, will further restrict supply availability, likely keeping prices elevated amid strong global demand for chocolate.”
Domestic Challenges
The domestic market has faced funding issues, with inefficiencies at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) cited as a major factor. In 2024, COCOBOD struggled to raise its annual syndicated loan from usual partners. These challenges, among others, have prevented local farmers from benefiting fully from the windfall brought by increasing prices.
In September 2024, COCOBOD announced a significant price increase for cocoa for the 2024–2025 season, pegging the price at GH¢48,000 per tonne. This translated to GH¢3,000 per 64-kilogram bag of cocoa, marking a 129.36% increase from the previous season.
Civil society, however, argued that the price—approximately US$185 at the time—fell short of what farmers deserved.
EU’s Deforestation Regulation to Reshape Industry
The impending EUDR introduces stringent requirements for cocoa producers, demanding that commodities entering the EU market be traceable and proven deforestation-free post-December 2020. While the regulation aims to curb environmental degradation, it poses substantial challenges for the local cocoa sector.
Traceability remains a critical hurdle. A Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA) paper on the EUDR indicated that in 2023, while 80% of cocoa exports from Ghana were linked to companies disclosing some supply chain information, only 9% of exports could be traced back to the district where they were produced.
Land ownership and tree tenure systems further complicate compliance. Under Ghana’s Concessions Act, naturally occurring trees on private land are vested in the state—disincentivizing farmers from preserving such trees.
According to Abraham Baffoe, Executive Director of Proforest, “The government has recently established a Tree Tenure and Benefit Sharing mechanism to ensure farmers and communities benefit from trees growing on their farms, but it will take time to be effectively implemented.”
Smallholder Farmers Bear the Compliance Burden
Smallholders, who account for nearly all cocoa production in the country, face the most significant challenges under the new regulation. Over 800,000 farmers depend on cocoa farming, with the industry employing 3.2 million people—17% of the working population. Many remain unaware of the EUDR requirements or the complexities of traceability.
“The message is simple: if you want to sell to Europe, you must stop cutting trees,” noted Mr. Baffoe. However, misconceptions persist, such as the belief that ‘sun cocoa’ is superior to ‘shade cocoa’ despite evidence from the International Cocoa Organisation that shaded environments are essential for optimal yields.
Efforts to educate farmers are gaining momentum. Organisations like Proforest, in collaboration with COCOBOD, are providing training on sustainable practices. Platforms such as the Africa Sustainable Commodities Initiative (ASCI) are engaging producers through workshops to facilitate compliance.
State Interventions and Funding Gaps
The government has initiated a National Cocoa Management System (NCMS), including a Cocoa Traceability System, to meet EUDR requirements. This system aims to map cocoa farms and ensure compliance with deforestation-free standards. However, implementation remains resource-intensive.
“To implement traceability on the ground, we need a digital ID for every farmer, tags for every bag of EUDR-compliant cocoa, and dedicated centres in all cocoa districts… and we need this all in one go, now!” Mr. Baffoe emphasized.
Financial constraints pose a significant barrier. While the European Forest Institute and philanthropic organisations like the Walmart Foundation have provided support, stakeholders are calling for broader financial assistance. “Proforest’s work with the Ghana government is being supported by the Walmart Foundation. They are offering fantastic support to smallholder farmers,” Mr. Baffoe added.
Stakeholders stress that compliance requires a collective approach. The Asunafo-Asutifi landscape initiative, part of the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme, exemplifies collaborative efforts to align agricultural production with forest conservation.
“If we had allowed things to go as designed by the EU, it would only result in companies working within their own supply chains—but that does not solve the issue,” Mr. Baffoe insisted, advocating for landscape-level initiatives to address deforestation across entire jurisdictions.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is preparing to unveil a revamped management committee for the Black Stars, according to Ghanasoccernet.com.
This development follows the dissolution of the previous management team after Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The decision to reconstitute the management committee comes on the heels of a disappointing run at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where the Black Stars exited at the group stage for the second consecutive time.
In an earlier adjustment, Dr. Randy Abbey was brought into the committee, but the team’s failure to secure qualification for the 2025 AFCON led the GFA to disband the group entirely.
According to a source, the GFA is finalizing plans to announce the new team, which will feature Dr. Randy Abbey as Chairman.
Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah is expected to join the committee, alongside FC Samartex president Dr. Richard Duah Nsenkyire and Greater Accra Regional Football Association chairman Samuel Aboabire.
In addition to the new management structure, the GFA is reportedly considering appointing a technical director to support Black Stars head coach Otto Addo. The aim is to bolster the team’s preparations for the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Following their underwhelming AFCON qualifiers, the Black Stars will be eager to bounce back with strong performances in their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Madagascar, scheduled for March this year.
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Divine Agbeko has advised President John Dramani Mahama to remove what he described as naughty taxes introduced by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government.
He emphasized that this should be prime on the agenda list of the current government as these taxes have overburdened Ghanaians already facing economic hardships.

The NPP presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat to ex-President Mahama, 16 hours after the ballot was closed in the 2024 general election. The significant point is that the decision was not based on the results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) but the internally generated results compiled by the NPP. Significant to note was also the Press briefing by the NDC’s Communication Director Sammy Gyamfi on 8th December 2024, which gave sufficient proof that the NDC had also compiled their own results unlike the previous elections.
The question then is, if the two main political parties could collate their results in less than 24hrs after the close of the ballot, why can’t the EC who is better resourced do it better? This clearly confirms that there is something basically wrong with the EC’s system of collation. The EC in ensuring accuracy has created unnecessary delays in releasing results and has thus created tension making the process of collation more cumbersome.
The EC has always been appealing to Ghanaians to exercise patience whilst the collation is on-going, and for how long will this appeal continue? It happened in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. We always assume that Ghanaians are peaceful, but it is not true if the recent violence that followed declaration of results are anything to go by. The NDC had planned to turn this country into a war zone, but the calculated step taken by Dr Bawumia to concede defeat early, helped prevent a catastrophe that would have befallen this nation.
Elections are won or lost at the polling station. This in effect means that once the polling station results have been declared, a party has either won or lost the election. Collation is therefore cosmetic and involves simple addition of results of all polling stations for each constituency. This is the job the EC (seemingly) has proved incapable of managing peacefully. Yes, care must be taken to ensure that mistakes are avoided, but this must be weighed against the possibility of an outbreak of violence when unnecessarily delayed. The decision to pull all polling agents together at an agreed location (Collation Centre) is a recipe for disaster when tensions are high and must be reviewed.
In addition to collating the results of polling stations, the centres also serve as the second line of appeal in disagreed polling station results and this is the centre where the ballot is counted the third time. Consequently, the centres have become “hot spots” created by the EC and always choked with people who have no business being there. The control of the crowd at these centres (276 constituencies/centres) has been a major problem for the security services especially those in remote areas. The collation of results is key to the electoral process, and it is very necessary that the current practice be reviewed to remove the stress that has been placed on it.
I call for the abolition of collation centres. My reason is that after the counting of the ballot at the polling stations, all other regulations have been satisfied, the results sheets or “pink sheets” or certificates are signed by all agents. After the agents of candidates have appended their signatures against the results of their candidates, the presiding officers of the EC retains the original certificate, and the duplicate copies are given to the agents. The EC’s copy serves as a benchmark for certification of all duplicate copies. The need to involve party agents in the collation process becomes unnecessary because that is the responsibility of the EC and staff.
To assemble at a collation centre to total results which have been issued by the EC to all parties is sheer waste of time. If this collation issue is not handled properly, it could one day turn the whole country upside down. The EC has the mandate to collate all results and that to my mind is what the EC must do. Sadly, the EC in exercising its authority on the collation, has surrendered it on the cover of transparency by involving agents and this has compounded the problem of collation. My point is that you don’t need agents when you are collating results because they all have copies of the results.
My suggestion is that after the results certificates (normally referred to as “pink sheet”) have been signed by all agents, before copies are issued to agents, the original copy must be scanned and immediately sent to the EC’s operations room in Accra. After this action, copies must be given to the agents by presiding officers., The Returning Officers should then retire to an office or an agreed area where presiding officers will assemble with the original copies of the “pink sheets” for the collation of the results. I maintain that collation of the results is the sole responsibility of the EC and should be treated as such and no agents should be involved.
When the collation is completed, copies of the collated results must be released to parties and candidates who should be given 24hrs to cross-check the results with their “pink sheets” before the results are declared. Where there are discrepancies, the complaints should be referred to an arbitration committee with evidence supported by – “pink sheets”. Since the original copies of the pink sheets are held by the EC, it should not be difficult for the Arbitration Committees to do their job. The rules and regulations should be amended to abolish collation centres and establish an Arbitration committee by the EC if the suggestion is accepted. It is my belief that this suggestion will eliminate violence at collation centres and diffuse the tension normally created at the Centres. The third counting of the ballot at the collation centre should also be abolished and the counting should take place at the polling station and no other place because “elections are won or lost at the polling station”. It is again emphasized that collation of results is the sole responsibility of the EC and must be treated as such and should never be surrendered to the “whims and caprices” of political agents.
Ghana’s democratic journey which has always been praised by many countries in the world is always threatened internally by intimidation, violence and arbitrariness by certain individuals who think they know better than the EC. Sadly, in the recent elections, it has been the NDC who wants to usurp the powers of the EC and win all the seats whether foul or clean. The reports that emanated from the collation centres of the following nine constituencies (Ahafo Ano North, Techiman South, Ahafo Ano South West, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Dome-Kwabenya and Ablekuma North) indicated complete anarchy which compelled the EC to suspend the collation. In some constituencies, the lives of returning officers were threatened to declare results whilst in other constituencies, results were declared under duress. Results declared under duress are null and void in law and everyone involved in the elections knows it very well. Such an action undermines democracy and mocks the peace we claim to have and all those involved must bow down their heads in shame.
Sadly, the incoming president criticising the EC for annulling some results which were declared under duress gave an indication that whatever the EC does will not be accepted. What a shame. If the presidential results had been declared under duress, this country would have been under siege. The independence of the EC is the foundation of our democracy and must be maintained but the NDC wants to take the law into their own hands. The NDC was happy when the same EC declared their presidential candidate the winner of the presidential elections and yet they question the same EC over cancellation of other results under duress.
Collation results are necessary and part of the electoral process to declare winners, but such centres require the presence of presiding and returning officers in whose possession are the original “pink sheets”. The presence of political parties is unnecessary because it is the responsibility of the EC to collate the results. All political parties also have duplicate copies of the “pink sheets” and therefore whilst the EC is collating the results, political parties must do the same. When the EC completes its collation a copy each is given to political parties to confirm or otherwise. Challenging the collated results of the EC, must always be supported by “pink sheets” issued to political parties. Once political parties are eliminated from the collation centres there will be peace.
Ghana has so far managed violence after elections but from recent experience, a lot more effort is needed to ensure that issues that contribute to violence are eliminated from the electoral process for peace to prevail.

President John Mahama has criticised the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government over the cost of the abandoned National Cathedral project.
According to Mr Mahama, the proposed cost is excessive, and he believes the building can be completed at a more reasonable amount.
He pointed out that a similar facility in Nigeria was constructed at a much lower cost than the one planned for Ghana.
“This project must be completed at a reasonable cost. Given the current circumstances Ghana is facing, it makes no sense to undertake such a project at a staggering sum of $400 million. I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which serves all Christian denominations in Nigeria, was built at a cost of $30 million. I believe we can achieve this project at a much more reasonable figure, and together, we can raise the necessary funds,” he said.
Speaking at his first National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, Mr Mahama added that his government might decide to continue the project, and the location could also be reconsidered. “Such a reconsideration of this project might even include changing the current site that was chosen for the project,” he noted.
The National Cathedral project, initiated by former President Akufo-Addo, was set to cost $400 million. Akufo-Addo had originally stated that the project would be funded through private fundraising efforts rather than public funds; however, it later emerged that state funds were being used.
Despite the use of public funds, the project remains incomplete, with accusations of mismanagement of the funds by those tasked with overseeing the work. The former government has since faced significant criticism for alleged corruption or possible financial loss to the state.
Meanwhile, Mahama reaffirmed that his government would not use state funds to complete the cathedral. “On the future of the project, the Cathedral, I believe that all of us, as Christians, must forge a consensus on how to achieve this project without recourse to public funds,” he stated.
Currently, the project is at the foundation stage. Once completed, the National Cathedral will serve as a denominational centre for religious bodies in the country, providing a venue for their activities.
It is also intended to become a tourist site, featuring several facilities such as a museum, learning centre, and other auxiliary amenities.
Benin-born American actor Djimon Gaston Hounsou has recently discussed his challenges in the Hollywood film industry, expressing his concerns.
Despite working in Hollywood for nearly thirty years, Hounsou feels that he is not compensated as well as some of his peers in the industry.
This lack of fair pay has resulted in financial difficulties for him, despite his fame and roles in major movies.
“After being in the industry for over two decades, receiving two Oscar nominations, and appearing in blockbuster films, I am still struggling to make ends meet. I am definitely being underpaid,” he revealed during an interview with Larry Madowo on CNN.
Hounsou also shared a heartbreaking incident where he was overlooked for a Golden Globe Award because the organisers did not believe he deserved the recognition.
He emphasised that the Hollywood industry needs to address issues of racism, as Black actors are often not given the respect they deserve.
“I was nominated for a Golden Globe, but the Oscars overlooked me. They viewed me as someone who had just arrived and was not worthy of recognition. Despite proving them wrong, I still did not receive the respect I deserved as an actor. The idea of diversity still has a long way to go, and systemic racism cannot be eradicated overnight,” he stated.

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levy in the next budget to enhance healthcare access for all Ghanaians.
Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on January 12, 2025, President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to making healthcare accessible and equitable.
“We will prioritize healthcare and ensure that every Ghanaian, no matter their location or economic status, has access to quality medical care,” he stated. “In this regard, we will compile an inventory of all uncompleted health facilities and prepare a plan and programme to complete and operationalize these.”
He further explained that uncapping the NHIS levy is a crucial step toward equipping the National Health Insurance Authority with sufficient funds to reimburse healthcare providers for the services they render.
“This is important so that the National Health Insurance Authority can have sufficient funds to reimburse health service providers for the care that they provide to the public,” he added.
President Mahama also emphasized education as another key focus of his administration, with plans to improve infrastructure, equip teachers with essential resources, and expand access to technology for students.
These efforts, he noted, are part of a broader vision to elevate critical sectors of national development.

The Dangote Refinery has emerged as a transformative force in Nigeria’s econom
Nigeria’s oil industry is poised for growth as petroleum marketers prepare to launch a new 50,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery.
According to Billy Gillis-Harry, National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), the refinery will be developed in collaboration with three oil companies and located in Akwa Ibom State.
As Africa’s largest oil producer, Nigeria has long faced the challenge of being a leading crude oil exporter while heavily dependent on imported refined products.
To address this imbalance and enhance its oil production capacity, the country is making refinery development a key focus of its energy strategy.
This strategy focuses on building new refineries, modernizing existing facilities, and fostering partnerships to enhance efficiency and achieve self-sufficiency in the petroleum sector.
Significant progress can be seen in the rehabilitation of government-owned refineries like Warri and Port Harcourt and the promotion of modular refineries nationwide.
The Dangote Refinery has emerged as a transformative force in Nigeria’s economy, positioning itself as a major player in the global petroleum industry.
Between April and September 2024, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reported that the refinery supplied 489,500 MT of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and 29,000 MT of Jet A1 fuel.
These were distributed via 17 AGO shipments to Lagos, 6 to Warri, 2 to Port Harcourt, and 1 to Calabar, highlighting its key role in domestic fuel supply.
The Dangote Refinery has also commenced exporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to several African countries, including Ghana, Angola, South Africa, Cameroon, and Nigeria. This marks a significant milestone in enhancing regional fuel supply and reducing dependency on external sources.
According to The Punch, Billy Gillis-Harry, National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), confirmed a partnership agreement with Claridge Petroleum Company Ltd, Oasis Petrochemical Products Limited, and Afrintech.
This collaboration aims to ensure Nigerians have access to affordable fuel, further strengthening the refinery’s role in addressing local and regional energy needs.
“The deal is that we have requested for them to not import for us but to set up a refinery in Nigeria and they have agreed to that. So within the period that the process will be, they can be importing only diesel for us and maybe base oil; but PMS, we must have to do that locally,” Gillis-Harry told The Punch
This new arrangement effectively nullifies the group’s earlier agreement on petroleum importation.
In November last year, PETROAN had announced plans to import and sell Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at prices below those offered by the Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).
However, Gillis-Harry revealed that the importation plan has been scrapped in favor of establishing a new refinery, aligning with the association’s commitment to boosting local production and ensuring affordable fuel for Nigerians.
Southampton’s Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana might be on the verge of a fresh start as the Saints negotiate with Genoa for a potential move, according to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 22-year-old joined Southampton in January 2023 for a club-record £22 million but has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League.
With just two starts in nine appearances this season and no goals or assists, Kamaldeen has found game time limited, and his frustrations have been evident, particularly after his early substitution in a heavy defeat to Tottenham.
Genoa, under the guidance of manager Patrick Vieira, sees Kamaldeen as an ideal addition to their squad.
Vieira has a track record of nurturing young attacking talents, including Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, during his Crystal Palace tenure.
A loan deal appears to be the most likely outcome, giving Kamaldeen a chance to rediscover his form and confidence in Serie A.
Despite his struggles, Southampton’s new manager Ivan Juric has praised Kamaldeen’s work ethic and mentality, hinting at a potential future for him at St. Mary’s.
With Southampton languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table, creativity and flair are desperately needed, and the Ghanaian’s departure could leave a significant gap in an already struggling squad.

A devastating fire broke out in Nogsenia, a suburb of Navrongo in the Upper East Region of Ghana on Sunday, January 12, claiming the life of a six-month-old baby.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day left the local community in shock and mourning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the room of a couple before neighbours could intervene. The intensity of the flames made rescue efforts nearly impossible.
Despite attempts by the neighbours to extinguish the fire, the infant was tragically unable to be saved.

The controversy began when Asake made dramatic changes to his Instagram profile. A check by Tribune Online confirmed that the crooner had removed YBNL from his Instagram bio and unfollowed everyone, including Olamide.
However, neither Asake nor Olamide has confirmed or denied his alleged exit from the record label as of the time of this report.
The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stirred widespread debate after quoting from a Freemasons’ text during the Induction and Orientation Programme for Members of the Ninth Parliament (Cohort 1) on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
The event, held to prepare new and returning MPs for effective governance, took an interesting turn when the Minority Leader incorporated Freemasonry principles to emphasize unity, humility, and equality in leadership.
In a move aimed at protecting and preserving state and public lands for future generations, President John Mahama has issued an executive fiat to immediately cease all activities related to the sale, lease, or processing of transactions involving state and public lands.
This directive, communicated through a letter dated January 10, 2025, is a significant step toward promoting transparency and accountability in the management of state assets.
According to the letter, signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., the directive is intended to facilitate a comprehensive review of the current framework governing the management of state and public lands.
The letter instructs the Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission to submit a detailed report of all recent and ongoing transactions concerning state and public lands within 14 days.
This move is not entirely unexpected, given Ghana’s history of struggles with corruption and mismanagement of state assets.
In recent years, the country has made significant strides in promoting good governance and transparency, including the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate corruption cases.
The country’s commitment to transparency and accountability has also been recognized internationally.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Bawumia’s running partner in the NPP, also known as NAPO, has expressed strong opposition to claims that the Ashanti Region had low voter turnout in recent elections.
NAPO, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice-Presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, stressed that such assertions are not only foolish but also disrespectful to the Ashanti Region’s electorate.
In a recent interview, NAPO noted, “I usually feel like ridiculing anyone who claims Ashanti Region did not vote. Over 2 million people did not vote for us, so why would you claim we lost votes in the Ashanti region?”
He emphasized that the Ashanti Region provided a sizable amount of votes for the NPP, considerably contributing to the party’s overall success.
NAPO went on to say that now is the time for the party to focus on understanding the broader reasons that influenced voter turnout and dealing with them constructively.
Former Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has clarified the controversy surrounding the granting of a presidential pardon by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the final days of his administration.
According to him, although the process for pardoning the 12 individuals was initiated, no pardon was granted as widely reported following the leak of a document issued by the Office of the President to the Council of State.
In an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, Tuah-Yeboah explained that the document in question was intended for the Council of State’s advice regarding the individuals the president wished to pardon.
He noted that members of the Council of State objected to granting pardons to all the individuals listed in the document.
“These individuals submitted petitions. Those petitions were vetted, and then, because the president couldn’t sit at the Jubilee House on his own to pardon people, he submitted a letter to the Council of State. The Council of State, on January 2, actually met the president as part of the consultation process. At the end of the consultation, it was decided that these individuals should not be pardoned.
“When news started circulating that the president had pardoned these individuals, the presidency issued a statement to clarify that no such decision had been taken by the president.
“The president consulted the Council of State, and at the end of the day, a decision was made not to pardon these individuals. Unfortunately, the letter forwarded to the Council of State was leaked. Instead of most people, including some media personnel, taking the time to review the letter, they concluded that the president had pardoned these individuals. However, that letter was clearly a request from the president to the Council of State as part of the consultation process. As of now, those individuals remain in prison,” he clarified.
The letter from the Office of the President indicated that President Akufo-Addo, in line with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, wished to exercise his prerogative of mercy for the 11 convicted individuals. Akufo-Addo, according to the letter, asked the Council to expeditiously consider the individuals listed to enable him to act accordingly.
Below are the individuals on the list:
1. Akwasi Alhassan
Convicted of murder and sentenced to death on March 19, 1993, Alhassan has spent 31 years in prison. His sentence has now been commuted to life imprisonment by presidential order.
2. Beatrice Ofori
Convicted of human trafficking on June 6, 2023, and sentenced to eight years with hard labour, the 64-year-old suffers from severe hypertension, leading to significant mobility challenges. She has spent much of her sentence in the prison infirmary.
3. Frank Obeng
Sentenced to 40 years for manslaughter, Obeng is currently serving his term in Nsawam Prison. His sentence has been reduced to 12 years following the presidential pardon.
4. Stephen Nyarko
Convicted of conspiracy to rob and robbery in December 2010 and sentenced to 30 years, Nyarko has served 22 years, including time spent on remand. His pardon recognises the time already served.
5. Osman Inusah
Convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery, Inusah was found not guilty of armed robbery. He faces mental health challenges, and his release is intended to allow proper care and management at home.
6. Joseph Nana Kwaku Boateng
Convicted of attempted export and possession of narcotic substances on May 28, 2019, and sentenced to 15 years, Boateng has served eight years, including five on remand. His pardon reflects his significant time served.
7. Emmanuel Adu Mensah
Convicted of possession of narcotics in April 2024 and sentenced to 15 years, Adu Mensah was serving his term at Nsawam Prison. His release recognises his circumstances and potential for reform.
8. William Ato Essien
Former CEO of the defunct Capital Bank, Essien was sentenced in October 2023 to 15 years’ imprisonment for financial crimes, including embezzling GH¢620 million in liquidity support from the Bank of Ghana. Despite agreeing to repay GH¢90 million as restitution to avoid incarceration, Essien failed to meet the terms. His pardon acknowledges the complexities of his case and its broader implications for the financial sector.
9. Kwabena Twum Ampofo
Convicted of possessing narcotics and sentenced to a 10-year prison term in April 2024. He is currently serving his term in Nsawam.
10. Alexander Nii Lante Lawson
Convicted of stealing and sentenced to a five-year prison term with hard labour, Lawson has served three years in prison, during which his health has deteriorated.
11. Philip Akpeena Assibit
Sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2018 for causing financial loss to the state due to his role in the National Youth Empowerment Programme. He has served six years in prison and is currently unwell, having pleaded for release due to his ill health.
Casually, isn’t it strange that there was a blanket rejection of the entire list? Isn’t it strange? This happened on the second. Yes, that was the consultation process.
Because the president had to consult the Council of State, the decision was reached that the requested pardons should not be granted. The requests were therefore denied.

Black Stars midfielder Salis Abdul Samed finally made his long-awaited debut for Sunderland in their 2-1 defeat to Stoke City on January 11, 2025.
The former RC Lens loanee was brought on in the second half of the game, marking his first appearance in a competitive fixture after 244 days.
Samed replaced Harrison Jones in the 80th minute with the score tied at 1-1. The match went into extra time, during which the Ghanaian made an error that led to Stoke City’s winning goal.
He finished the game with a 5.5 rating as Sunderland suffered a home defeat and were eliminated from the FA Cup in the third round.
Abdul Samed had been inactive and had not played a competitive match since representing Ghana in June 2024 in a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Central African Republic.
The Ghanaian secured a loan move to Sunderland during the summer transfer window after RC Lens put him up for transfer.
After his debut, Samed will aim to earn more minutes and regain his form to help Sunderland in their quest for promotion to the Premier League.
Multiple award-winning broadcast journalist, Serwaa Amihere, has recently addressed a concerning trend among some women in relationships.
She cautions against overwhelming potential partners with financial burdens, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and mutual respect in building healthy relationships.
In her statement, Serwaa observed that some women, upon entering new relationships, tend to offload their financial responsibilities onto their partners. This includes expecting men to cover expenses such as food, rent, hair, and clothing. She likened this behaviour to that of homeless individuals seeking complete support, which can be off-putting to well-meaning men.
Serwaa, known for her stance on women’s independence, advises against this approach. She believes that while it’s natural for partners to support each other, relying entirely on a man for one’s upkeep can strain the relationship and deter genuine connections.
“If you meet a Man who Loves you this 2025, Don’t Use ‘I haven’t Eaten’ To chase him away. Try and eat in your House.” She wrote on IG.
She further emphasized that being independent as a woman not only fosters healthier relationships but also empowers women to make decisions that are in their best interest.
The running mate for Dr Bawumia of the NPP, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has expressed strong disapproval towards assertions that the Ashanti Region exhibited low voter turnout in the recent elections.
Serving as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, NAPO emphasized that such statements are not only ridiculous but also disrespectful to the electorate of the Ashanti Region.
In a recent interview, NAPO stated, “I always feel like insulting anyone who says Ashanti Region didn’t vote. Over 2 million people didn’t vote for us so why will say we lost votes in the Ashanti region?”
He highlighted that the Ashanti Region delivered a substantial number of votes for the NPP, contributing significantly to the party’s overall performance.
NAPO further added that this is time for the party to be focusing on understanding the broader factors that influenced voter turnout and addressing them constructively.
President John Mahama has directed the Lands Commission to immediately cease all activities related to the sale, lease, or processing of transactions involving state and public lands.
This decision, communicated through a letter dated January 10, 2025, from the Office of the President, aims to safeguard public lands for the benefit of both current and future generations.
The directive, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, instructed the Lands Commission to halt all ongoing transactions concerning state lands.
“This directive has been issued to protect and preserve state and public lands for the collective benefit of the citizenry and future generations. Therefore, all ongoing and pending transactions must be halted without delay to facilitate a comprehensive review of the current framework governing the management of such lands,” the statement read.
Additionally, the directive requested that the Lands Commission submit a detailed report of all recent and ongoing transactions related to State and Public Lands to the Office of the President within 14 days of the communication.
Crossdresser, Bobrisky, has appealed to singer, BurnaBoy, to effect the release of singer Speed Darlington.

President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at the possibility of relocating the National Cathedral of Ghana.
The President shared this while addressing the gathering at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service, held as part of his inauguration at the auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
He stated that the Christian community in Ghana would reconsider the project, including aspects such as its location and cost.
“On the future of the project — the Cathedral — I believe that all of us as Christians must forge a consensus on how to achieve such a project without recourse to public funds. This project must be realized at a reasonable cost.
“I believe that we can arrive at a more reasonable figure for achieving such a project, and together, we can raise the funding for it. Such reconsideration of the project might even include changing the current site that was chosen for it. I leave the rest to any future consultations we will have as the body of Christ,” he said.
The President also announced that his government would soon initiate an investigation into the construction of the cathedral, as directed by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
He emphasized that the amount of money spent on the project by the previous government was questionable and warranted scrutiny.
“The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice directed the government to audit the project and investigate any misuse of public funds. The government is obligated to comply with this directive and will soon commence such an investigation into the project,” Mahama said.
“In the current circumstances Ghana is facing, it makes no sense to pursue such a project at a staggering cost of $400 million. I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which serves all Christian faiths in Nigeria, was built at a cost of $30 million,” he noted.

NPP presidential candidate exchanging greetings with some party leaders
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) needs a bold, decisive, and firm leader, says the Belgium secretary.
In a statement, the secretary emphasized that the party requires a new face and new leadership, as those who have been in charge for the past 16 years must pave the way for fresh leadership.
The secretary criticized the idea of a “YES SIR, MASSA” leader who cannot criticize their own boss when necessary. Instead, the party needs a leader who is outspoken, firm, patriotic, and genuinely concerned about the welfare of Ghanaians.
The statement also highlighted the party’s poor performance in the recent election, particularly in the northern, Zongo, and Muslim communities.
The secretary questioned the notion of “it’s time for Dombo” in light of this election’s results.
The NPP Belgium Secretary emphasized that the party must restructure and focus on the grassroots and floating voters. This requires a leader who can connect with the people and inspire confidence in the party’s vision.
Read Full Text of the concerns raised by the Belgium secretary shared with this Portal:
New Face
New Leadership
The party needs new leadership and a new face
Those who have been in charge for the past 16 years must pave the way for new leadership. We need a bold, decisive, and firm leader. We are not ready for a “YES SIR, MASSA” leader who cannot criticise his own boss when necessary. One who smiles always but has pain and anguish within cannot lead NPP anymore.
The NORTHERN votes were promised…. we got zero
ZONGO votes…we got zero
MUSLIM votes…we got zero
The data have been slashed in our faces, so where lies “it’s time for DOMBO”
Our forefathers were bold, fearless, and decisive, so we need bold and firm leadership. A leader who wants to please everyone and is also not decisive cannot lead us.
In opposition, the party reverts back to the Chairman as the leader of the party constitutionally, so no one is the leader of the party other than the party’s Chairman.
Let us make it known to those who think the party is on standby waiting for their preferred candidate are dreaming in their caskets.
They have already employed their mentally retarded babies with sharp teeth who can be manipulated to push their agenda through. Left to soberness and academic ideas of the personality, Mahama wouldn’t have come near the seat at all.
Ghana is ready for an outspoken, firm, patriotic and “nukr3kafuo” president.
The party needs to sit back and restructure, think about the grassroots and floating voters…” the people’s people” who can win the seat for us.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on first-time Members of Parliament (MPs) to actively seek mentorship and collaboration with seasoned colleagues to deepen their understanding of Parliamentary operations.
Speaker Bagbin made this appeal during an orientation session organised on Saturday, January 11, for the newly elected MPs.
The Speaker, a seasoned legislator himself, emphasised the critical role that mentorship plays in navigating the often complex and demanding nature of Parliamentary work.
He noted that the early days in Parliament can be daunting, particularly for those unfamiliar with the procedural nuances and the weight of responsibilities that come with representing their constituents.
The Speaker underscored the importance of first-time MPs quickly acquainting themselves with the rules, traditions, and expectations of the House.
He pointed out that effective collaboration with experienced members could significantly shorten the learning curve and better equip them to make meaningful contributions during debates on the floor of Parliament and in committee meetings.
Beyond the technical aspects of Parliamentary procedures, Speaker Bagbin also stressed the need for new MPs to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and moral uprightness.
He reminded them that public office is a position of trust and that their conduct, both within and outside Parliament, would reflect on the institution and their constituents.
“As we grapple with the complexities of Parliament, I encourage you to network with your colleagues, share ideas and solicit guidance from experienced members of this House to enable you to gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies of Parliamentary business. This will help equip and inform you to be able to contribute meaningfully to debates on the floor and at committee meetings of the House.
“Also, keep uppermost in mind that because of the tremendous amount of responsibility, you will be expected to uphold the highest standards of honesty, integrity and moral uprightness to sustain and enhance the image of parliament and also the trust and confidence of your constituents and citizens in general.”

Nana Attobrah Quaicoe is the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB)
A leaked document from the Lands Commission has revealed that Nana Attobrah Quaicoe, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), acquired prime state land in the Cantonments area for just over GH¢160,000.
The document, which included details of the NIB boss, including his picture, shows that the land he acquired is designated as Plot No. 8 and spans an area of approximately 0.24 acres.
The land is located within the Giffard Road Layout Extension Area at Cantonments, Accra, under the jurisdiction of the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region.
The document names the President of the Republic as the lessor and Nana Attobrah Quaicoe as the lessee.
“In consideration of the sum of One Hundred and Sixty Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifteen Cedis (GH¢160,715.00) paid by the Lessee to the Lessor as premium (the receipt of which payment the Lessor hereby acknowledges) and in further consideration of the payment of the annual ground rent herein stated and the observance and performance of the covenants, stipulations, and conditions herein contained, the Lessor hereby leases to the Lessee all that piece or parcel of land known as Plot No. 8 measuring an approximate area of 0.24 acres situated within the Giffard Road Layout Extension Area-Accra at Cantonments-Accra in the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region of the Republic of Ghana, TO HAVE and TO HOLD same unto and to the use of the Lessee for a term of Ninety-Nine (99) years with effect from the 1st day of January, 2021, yielding and paying therefore unto the Lessor an annual ground rent of Six Thousand, Seven Hundred and Twenty Cedis (GH¢6,720.00) payable yearly in advance on or before the 1st day of January in every year, the payment for the period from the 1st day of January, 2021, to the 31st day of December, 2021, having been made on or before the execution of this lease. This said amount shall be subject to revision by the Lessor every fifth (5th) year of the term hereby granted,” part of the document reads, which was listed by one Alex Quaynor.
It is worth noting that land in prime areas of Accra, including the Cantonments area, is generally priced in the millions of Ghana cedis or US dollars.
This development comes after the NIB boss threatened to take legal action against renowned legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, following claims that Kpebu had voluntarily opted to return state land he acquired around Cantonments to the state.
During an interview on TV3 on Saturday, January 11, 2024, Kpebu revealed that Attobrah Quaicoe decided to return the land to the state after concerns were raised by the head of the ORAL preparatory committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Kpebu explained that this decision by the NIB boss prevented him from being investigated or potentially prosecuted by the ORAL committee.
“Our role is preparatory, so we are not directly involved in the actual recovery of assets; that will be addressed in the next phase. However, there are individuals who have expressed willingness to return assets,” Kpebu stated.
“The head of the National Intelligence Bureau, formerly the BNI, reached out to Okudzeto due to the advocacy surrounding the land issue and stated that he would return the land and withdraw his claim. He requested to be excluded from further involvement,” he added.
Kpebu further mentioned, “Yesterday, we visited the site where the land is located. The NIB boss, Attobrah, confirmed his decision to relinquish the land. I am somewhat acquainted with Attobrah on a personal level.”
However, Attobrah Quaicoe, through his lawyers, denied that he had willingly returned the state land.
He stated that Kpebu’s claim, made on TV3, was false and defamatory.
The lawyers, led by Saviour Quarcoo Kudze, called for a retraction and an apology from Kpebu, threatening legal action should he fail to retract his “utterly false and defamatory statements.”
“We urge the public to disregard these false statements that are calculated to injure our client’s reputation,” part of the statement read.
