In a tweet, the former Big Brother Naija housemate described the news as deeply distressing, saying the incident has weighed heavily on her and disrupted her peace since it happened.
Naija News reports that she sent wishes for Ruth’s recovery and expressed frustration over reports of negligence and alleged attempts to conceal the facts surrounding the crash, which involved a truck linked to the Dangote Group.

Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah is the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations
The Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has revealed that his office has received numerous prophecies following a directive for all church and religious leaders in the country to share any prophecies concerning government appointees or other nationally significant matters for deliberation before making them public.
‘Prophecies or No Prophecies’: We will take the right decisions to reset the country – Asiedu Nketia
Speaking to Joy News on Thursday, August 14, 2025, he said, “We have received plenty, but I don’t want to put numbers to it.”
Afriyie Ankrah disclosed that the majority of the prophecies lack substance.
“By and large, 70–80% have no substance. Then you look at the rest, the 20%, and sift through, and maybe 2, 3, or 5% may deserve further probing,” he noted.
He stressed that the role of his office extends far beyond reviewing prophecies.
“It’s not a full-time job or an office set up solely to receive prophecies. That’s not how it works. The office has multiple duties. We collaborate with ECOWAS, the African Union, the UN, and locally with various faith bodies—not just Christians,” he explained.
The call for religious leaders to share prophecies or spiritual messages of national importance comes in the wake of a fatal helicopter crash that killed eight people, including the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Murtala Ibrahim Mohammed.

We’ve received many prophecies since directing that those involving national matters or officials be sent to the Presidency – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah.#JoyNews#ThePulsepic.twitter.com/ayX8VKiisY
The Presidential Envoy on Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has revealed that over 200 prophecies have been submitted to his office since a directive was issued, yet only a small fraction warrant further consideration.
In the wake of the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, Mr Afriyie Ankrah clarified that his office is not solely dedicated to processing prophecies. Its broader mandate includes collaboration with international and local faith bodies, including ECOWAS, the African Union, the United Nations, and religious groups across Ghana.
According to the envoy, the majority of the submissions following the tragedy are unsubstantial. “By and large, 70–80% is of no substance,” he said. Among the rest, only 2–5% may merit deeper investigation.

The directive prompting these submissions was issued on August 10 and encouraged church leaders to formally channel prophecies concerning national security, political leadership, or public stability to the envoy’s office for urgent review. The aim was to differentiate genuine spiritual insight from fear-inducing speculation.
Explaining the process, Mr Afriyie Ankrah emphasised that sensitive prophecies with potential security implications must be privately communicated, not shared publicly, for responsible handling. The office has since established a WhatsApp platform and an email address for these submissions.
He added that the Bible itself encourages the testing of prophecies. “Testing means there is room for review … There’s a lot that is completely bogus … But there may be a few that have some substance,” he noted.
Responding to misconceptions, the envoy stated that the office, established two weeks prior, isn’t a “collector of prophecies” as some erroneous reports suggested. “That’s why you saw all those memes,” he admitted, reiterating the office’s purpose in fostering unity and harmony among religious communities.
Highlighting religion’s role in Ghana’s social fabric, he pointed out that over 90% of the population belongs to a faith community, making interfaith engagement a vital component of governance and social cohesion.

Kaftans have steadily earned their place as a beloved wardrobe staple for stylish and graceful mothers who seek to combine comfort with sophistication. These flowing garments, originally rooted in traditional wear, have evolved into elegant fashion statements that suit a variety of occasions — from relaxed family gatherings to high-profile weddings and religious celebrations.
What makes kaftans truly stand out is their effortless elegance. They are typically crafted from luxurious fabrics such as silk, chiffon, satin, or crepe, offering a gentle, breathable feel on the skin. Many modern designs are enhanced with decorative elements like intricate embroidery, sparkling stones, lace trims, or delicate appliqués that elevate their overall appearance. The silhouette of a kaftan allows for free movement while still flattering the body, making it a top choice for mothers who prioritize both beauty and practicality.
An elegant mother can further elevate her kaftan look by pairing it with eye-catching accessories. Bold earrings, stacked bracelets, stylish heels, and a sophisticated clutch bag can transform a simple kaftan into a red-carpet-worthy outfit. The style’s adaptability is another reason it remains popular — whether you’re drawn to minimalistic, clean-cut designs or bold, embellished versions, there’s a kaftan to suit your personal taste.
Color selection also plays a key role. For formal or religious events, rich, deep hues like emerald green, royal blue, wine, and mustard yellow exude luxury and class. Meanwhile, softer pastel shades or neutral tones work well for more casual settings.
With or without a headwrap, kaftans radiate a refined, timeless charm. They are more than just garments — they represent a lifestyle of elegance, poise, and cultural pride. For the modern mother who wants to feel regal yet relaxed, the kaftan is always a winning choice.
A group calling itself the NPP Positive Wing in the Western and Western North regions has accused former Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker, of lacking candour after his recent denial of having presidential ambitions.
Mr Duker, who also served as Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, had earlier issued a strongly worded rejoinder rejecting media reports suggesting he intends to contest for the presidency. In that statement, he described such reports as “falsehoods” capable of undermining public perception, the unity of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and his integrity.
“I have never, directly or indirectly, indicated that I harbour presidential ambitions,” he insisted, adding that his political journey was rooted in humility, loyalty, and service to the party.
However, the NPP Positive Wing has dismissed this denial, claiming there is clear evidence to the contrary. In a statement titled “Mireku Duker’s Denial Cast Doubt on His Credibility – The Audio is Authentic”, the group alleged that a widely circulated audio recording proves Mr Duker had indeed spoken of a presidential ambition.
“There is no doubt that former Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker, is the voice heard in the widely circulated audio recording. His recent denial does not match the facts surrounding the issue,” the group stated.
According to the group, Mr Duker had on multiple occasions told polling station executives and other party members, particularly after the 2024 elections, that he intended to pursue a presidential ambition and considered reclaiming the Tarkwa-Nsuaem parliamentary seat as a crucial step in that plan.
They further pointed out that his rejoinder failed to mention that the media reports were based on the contents of the audio recording.
Mr Kwaku Adjei, popularly known as Tebua and a member of the NPP, has confirmed that he recorded the conversation at his home during a meeting with Mr Duker in Tarkwa. He has reportedly expressed willingness to provide evidence authenticating the recording if required.
The NPP Positive Wing also criticised the former MP over what they described as “attacks” on former presidents, senior party members, and his predecessor, Hon. Gifty Kusi, in the recording, saying such remarks demonstrated “a lack of respect for party members across the constituency and the country.”
Beyond the current controversy, the group accused Mr Duker of contributing to deep divisions within the party during his tenure as MP, particularly over the compilation of the constituency album. They alleged that some polling station executives were removed while non-residents were added, a move they claim undermined grassroots mobilisation and hurt the party’s performance in both the 2020 and 2024 elections.

“These issues cannot be overlooked. It is important for the party to reflect on these developments, uphold integrity, and restore unity to strengthen its future prospects,” the group concluded.
Mr Duker, in his earlier statement, had called on the public and party faithful to treat the media reports with “the contempt they deserve,” reiterating that he remains focused on supporting the NPP leadership in its quest to recapture power in 2028.
The Bawumia for President Campaign team in September 2024 appointed George Mireku Duker, as the Campaign Coordinator for mining communities before the 2024 elections.
In July 2025, he was also appointed as Dr Bawumia’s campaign coordinator for the Western region. That appointment has faced opposition from some disgruntled party members in the region.

The young children of the late Defence Minister took to the podium of Christ the King Church to share the fondest memories of their father during the mass vigil held for the victims of the crash.
“Even with the weight of national duties on your shoulders, you always made time for us. You called us every day when you travelled. You never missed that important moment. And when you couldn’t be there in person, you made us feel you were right before us,” their tribute read.
Dr Omane Boamah was aboard the Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter when it crashed at Adansi Sikaman, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
All eight members aboard the helicopter died when it crash-landed.
The fatalities included Dr Alhaji Murtala Muhammed, MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science & Technology, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Aboagye, Former Parliamentary Candidate.

Ghana was struck with lachrymose grief on Wednesday, 6th August, when Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, and six others lost their lives in a helicopter crash while participating in the national campaign against the galamsey menace and its devastating impact on Ghana’s environment, a tragedy indelibly etched in the political history of our country.
The shared journeys of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Comrade Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and myself are deeply rooted in the vibrant tradition of student leadership and activism.
In 2013, I had the privilege of serving as Deputy Minister under Dr. Omane Boamah. I came to know him as a leader of clarity, meticulousness, and unwavering devotion to public service.
My nomination to that role was met with intense public anticipation, amplified by a wave of media scrutiny. In those high-pressure moments, Dr. Omane Boamah stood firmly by my side, offering steady guidance, unshakable encouragement, and the resources I needed to prepare for my parliamentary vetting. His mentorship was not only professional but profoundly humane.
‘Fatal helicopter crash has hit us hard’ – Dr Ayine explains why prosecutions have stalled
Despite the inherent power imbalance between Minister and Deputy Minister, a relationship undefined by law and sustained solely by the goodwill of the substantive Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah gave me genuine space to participate meaningfully in the Ministry’s work.
With profound gratitude, I recall how Dr. Omane Boamah played a significant role in supporting my parliamentary campaign in the Ablekuma West constituency. His contribution went beyond words, as he provided essential party paraphernalia and logistical support that strengthened our operations on the ground. Through his assistance, we were able to effectively mobilise our team, reach out to voters, and project a strong and organised campaign presence in the constituency.
In the early years of the 21st century, my path crossed with Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, and the late Dr. John Kumah, united by our shared belief in social justice. Alongside comrades like Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Lord Hamah, D.M. Ofori-Atta, and others, we stood at the forefront of student struggles, challenging injustice and defending public education.
In 2008, Dr. Omane Boamah proposed my name as Treasurer of the National Youth Campaign Team for the election of President John Evans Atta Mills, a team composed of distinguished former student leaders. His trust reflected a deep belief in my capacity to contribute meaningfully to the democratic processes of our party.
Earlier still, in 2006, Comrade Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and I represented Ghana at the All-African Students’ Union Congress in Johannesburg, South Africa. At the time, I served as Women’s Commissioner for the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was NUGS President, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed was the Deputy Secretary-General of the All-African Students’ Union. Also present at the congress were the Secretary-General of AASU, Comrade Dr. Oludare Ogunlana, and former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, then Governor of Bayelsa State. That gathering, along with our collective experiences in student activism, strengthened our shared vision of a united, progressive Africa rooted in principled leadership.
Helicopter Crash: President Mahama to lead a ruthless campaign against galamsey – Ablakwa
Years later, Comrade Murtala and I would cross paths again, this time as scholars. Both of us embarked on PhD research into parliamentary committees; he completed and graduated earlier this year. Over time, we exchanged ideas, compared findings, and he generously shared scholarly resources with me, a gesture that reflected his enduring spirit of solidarity.
When I faced the brunt of corporate media attacks and the infamous false “$1 million” narrative, Comrade Murtala was among the very few, and often the lone, public voices who defended my integrity. I recall with deep appreciation his public advocacy across various radio platforms, where he unequivocally affirmed, “I know Victoria Hamah personally, and she is not corrupt.” His courage to speak against the turbulent tide of the concocted narrative remains an enduring testament to his value of truth in public life.
From the crucible of student activism to the arenas of public service and scholarship, I have learned from these men, their loyalty, their courage, their generosity, and their steadfast commitment to principle.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Comrade Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed embody the unbreakable bonds of comradeship and the enduring values our generation must protect and pass on.
Fare Thee Well, Comrades!!!

European players born to Ghanaian parents have come in demand for the Black Stars in the last two decades due to Ghana’s inability to produce top players who can compete at the highest level.
With the Ghana Football Association reportedly still pursing Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah to switch allegiance from England to join the Black Stars, it is clear that the GFA will chase every top talent with Ghanaian roots in Europe.
Despite the need for these players, some have urged the GFA to adopt a different approach by going after the players early in their careers before they start making names for themselves.
GhanaWeb takes a look at four eligible teenagers at Chelsea who could become great additions to the Black Stars in the future.
Mohammed Kudus misses out on winning UEFA Super Cup with Tottenham after team’s defeat to PSG
1. Samuel Rak-Sakyi
At just 20 years old, Samuel Rak-Sakyi is still in the early stages of his career.
On 7 November 2024, Rak-Sakyi made his senior debut for Chelsea in an 8–0 win over FC Noah in the UEFA Conference League. He was introduced in the game as a 79th minute substitute for Christopher Nkunku.
On December 12, 2024, Rak-Sakyi made his full debut for Chelsea starting against Astana in the UEFA Conference League.
While he has not rushed into a decision regarding his international future, the Black Stars will be a viable option for the youngster who has Ghanaian roots despite being born in the UK.
2. Josh Acheampong
Joshua Kofi Acheampong was born on May 5,2006 has become a very important player in Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea team especially after the long term injury of English defender, Levi Colwill.
Acheampong made his first Premier League start against London rivals Crystal Palace, with the match ending 1–1 at Selhurst Park. He impressed the coach heavily who labelled him as the best player on the pitch.
The youngster has featured in all Chelsea’s preseason games after Bayern Leverkusen and AC Milan respectively.
Thomas Partey has the right to do his job until he is convicted – Villarreal president
3. Genesis Kofi Koranteng Antwi
Born on May 11, 2007, Antwi was promoted to the senior side of the Chelsea football club in 2025.
On March 13, 2025, he debuted for them during a 1-0 home win over Copenhagen in the UEFA Conference League.
He recently made an appearance in Chelsea’s friendly match win against Bayern Leverkusen on August 8, 2025. Kofi assisted Joao Pedro to score in the game thus securing a comfortable 2-0 win for Chelsea.
4. Tyrique Aaron Delali George
Arguably the most high-profile name on this list.
Born in London to Ghanaian parents, the 19-year-old has a promising future ahead of him as he is very fancied by Chelsea coach, Enzo Maresca.
On August 29, 2024, George made his senior debut for Chelsea as a substitute in a 2–1 defeat against Servette in the 2024–25 UEFA Conference League.
On 10 April 2025, George scored his first goal for Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League quarter-final after Legia Warsaw.
George also scored his first Premier League goal in a 2–1 away victory over local rivals Fulham on April 20, 2025.
He was on the bench for Chelsea’s 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League and received a medal for his contributions in the tournament.
Should he choose Ghana, he would be linking up with talented forwards like Mohammed Kudus and Kamaldeen Sulemana, making for an exciting attacking setup.
His experience at the highest level, coupled with his dribbling ability and creativity, could be a game-changer for the Black Stars.
As Ghana looks to rebuild and reassert itself among Africa’s elite, recruiting top-tier talent with Ghanaian roots could be crucial.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has expressed confidence that his party will choose him as its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.
Addressing the media after receiving the NPP nomination forms picked on his behalf on Thursday, August 14, Dr Adutwum said, “We are on track, and by the grace of God, my party, I believe, will vote for me and make me the flagbearer of the NPP.”
He emphasised that the party’s victory in 2028 would mark the beginning of a transformative journey.
“And after that, I will be on the journey to the promised land. The land that our nation has been yearning for years, that our nation will become a prosperous one. Our nation will wage war against poverty and win. That the poverty and deprivation will be over,” he stated.
He explained that the 2028 campaign would focus on building a stronger and more self-reliant nation.
“That is what the campaign of 2028 will be about. To be about a country that hadn’t been independent for many years ago. We’ve done our very best. From the first president to the current president, each one of them has done something great. Yet, we have a lot to do. And that is what Adutwum’s presidency will be about.”
Dr Adutwum urged party members to back his bid.
“My party, give me the opportunity. Provide a bridge for me to cross to the other side. And once we get to the other side of the river, we are going to meet Ghanaians and let Ghanaians know that our future is going to be better than the present and the past,” he concluded.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that Ghana has formally requested assistance from the United States in conducting forensic investigations into the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.
“I can confirm to you that on the instruction of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, we have formally requested the Americans to come in and assist.
“We all know that they have considerable expertise when it comes to these matters, and so the indication we have received from the Americans is that they are very much willing to assist,” the North Tongu MP disclosed in an interview with Joy News.
Mr. Ablakwa stressed the importance of an independent probe, even though the Chinese manufacturers of the helicopter could decode the aircraft’s black box and submit a report.
“We think that it is important to bring in independent experts to ensure that the outcome of the investigations will be acceptable to all, so that there will also be confidence in the process.
“It is important that this process is done in a very thorough manner, in a manner that will be at par with best practice, the international gold standard. That is what President Mahama wants us to achieve.
“So I can assure you that our note has long been issued. The Americans have responded, and we are expecting the arrival of American experts soon to help us with the investigations,” he added.
Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah was among eight people who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash. The accident also claimed the lives of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.
The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
A state funeral for the victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, in Accra. However, Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed have already been laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) had earlier predicted cooler-than-usual weather conditions for July and August, urging the public to prepare for extended periods of cloudy skies, light rain, and misty mornings over the next two months.
In its 7 July advisory, GMet announced that much of the country will experience slight to moderate rainfall, reduced sunshine, and lower night-time temperatures.
Accra, Aug. 14, GNA – The Ghana News Agency (GNA) has paid tribute to the eight officials who died in the August 6 military helicopter crash while on national assignment.
The Agency described the incident as a national calamity and a personal loss, noting that the deceased were not only collaborators in its work but also trusted partners and friends.
“Beyond their official duties, these public officers had cultivated warm and respectful relationships with GNA staff – bonds built on mutual trust and shared dedication. Their loss resonates deeply across our newsroom,” said Mr Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager of GNA in a statement.
“In this hour of profound grief, the Ghana News Agency joins the Government and the people of Ghana in extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, their respective ministries and the Ghana Armed Forces.
“They answered the call of duty, and their service will forever be etched in our nation’s history,” he said, urging all Ghanaians to let their sacrifice inspire renewed commitment to national development.
The Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter was enroute from Accra to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) when the accident happened, resulting in the death of all eight onboard.
The deceased were: Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and MP for Tamale Central; Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; and Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.
The others were Mr Samuel Aboagye, former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Malaen Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
African governments must empower state research and innovation promotion institutions to create intellectual properties that can be transferred to businesses with the expertise and resources to commercialise them, while also ensuring access for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the Chief Executive Officer of Heritors Labs Limited, Derrydean Dadzie, has said.
Mr Dadzie argued that such an approach would address the stagnation of scalable innovations that remain confined to laboratories, strengthen intra-African trade, and enhance the continent’s contribution to the global innovation ecosystem.
“Fixing cross-border research and innovation collaborations can unlock enormous opportunities for intra-Africa trade, make discussions around innovation commercialisation more fluid, and ultimately impact the socio-economic development of the continent and its people,” he said.
Speaking at the opening of the ARICS Cross Border Webinar Series on the theme “Moving Innovation Beyond Islands: Building Cross-Border Markets that Integrate Africa’s Research and Industrial Ecosystems”, he lamented the disconnect between research hubs, investors and the business community across Africa.
“We’re more powerful if we’re able to collaborate and jointly co-create and solve our problems, including harmonising funds, expertise and resources in a more targeted approach towards the upscaling of African innovations and research outcomes,” he added.
It is estimated that about 90 per cent of Africa’s SMEs are not connected to the research and innovation ecosystem, meaning that industries capable of commercialising research into tangible products often lack direct links to such inventions.
Supporting Mr Dadzie’s call, the Chief Executive Officer of South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr Thulani Dlamini, said linking innovation hubs to industry would enable SMEs to leverage the infrastructure and support of research institutions to improve market access. He stressed that challenges to cross-border commercialisation extended beyond securing intellectual property rights, citing the absorptive capacity of SMEs, the nature of the technologies being transferred, and the mechanisms for such transfers as limiting factors.
“Access to capital remains the major challenge. With the necessary funding, small and medium-sized enterprises can acquire intellectual properties or innovations from research institutions and commercialise them. That is how we can realise economic dividends such as job creation and increased commercialisation of innovation and research outcomes,” Dr Dlamini said.
The webinar, held after the second edition of the Africa Research and Innovation Commercialisation Summit earlier this year in Accra, reinforced the need for policies and systems that facilitate cross-border trade in research-based innovations.
Other speakers, including Mr Ian Korongo, Head of Innovation and Commercialisation at the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), and Dr George Acheampong, Coordinator of the Innovation and Incubation Hub at the University of Ghana Business School, called for sustained high-level engagement to improve the transfer of commercially viable innovations across borders.
“Policy frameworks exist in almost every country, but implementation has been lagging. This requires sustained collaboration at national and political levels,” Mr Korongo said.
Dr Acheampong raised concerns over how intellectual property rights are allocated under most mutual recognition agreements, stressing the need for co-creation in innovation. “A laboratory that facilitates co-sharing could significantly advance the commercialisation of research and innovation outcomes across borders,” he said.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on politicians to stop politicising critical issues such as the acquisition of new presidential jets and military helicopters, stressing that safety and operational efficiency must take priority over partisan debates.
Speaking at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the Asantehene made the remarks when the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, visited to formally inform him of the deaths of eight people in the August 6 military helicopter crash at Sikaman-Brofroyedru in the Adansi Akrofrom District.
The King expressed concern over the condition of the country’s fleet, noting that many of Ghana’s military aircraft were unfit for sustained use. He urged that the purchase of a new aircraft be treated with urgency, describing it as a matter of national interest.
“Enough of the politicising of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said.
He lamented that several attempts to procure a new aircraft in recent years had failed, and insisted that Ghana must invest in modern aviation assets to ensure both security and operational readiness.
The Asantehene also conveyed his condolences to President John Dramani Mahama and the families of the victims, urging national unity in tackling the challenges in Ghana’s aviation sector to prevent future tragedies.
Two of the victims — Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed — were buried on August 10.
The remaining six, scheduled to be buried on August 15, include Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Accra, Aug. 14, GNA – Dr. Samuel Mawusi Asafo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chartered Institute of Administrators and Management Consultants (CIAMC), has called on Ghana’s leaders to strengthen environmental protection measures as a lasting tribute to the men who tragically lost their lives on August 6.
Speaking during a memorial tribute, Dr. Asafo described the incident as “a big loss to our nation,” stressing that environmental stewardship must be central to national governance.
“Our institute has always emphasised the need for administrators and managers to be conscious of their physical environment,” he said. “Protecting our environment is not an optional duty, it is at the core of responsible administration,” he added.
Dr. Asafo urged political leaders and government agencies to reinforce strategies for environmental protection, linking such action directly to honouring the memory of the fallen men.
“Let us protect our environment in their memory. This will be the most meaningful tribute we can offer,” he said.
He commended the government’s decision to set up a fund to support the children of the deceased, describing it as a “comforting gesture.”
He assured the bereaved families that “the nation mourns with you,” while acknowledging the deep personal loss they face.
Addressing the ongoing investigations into the incident, Dr. Asafo cautioned against premature conclusions. “As professionals, we believe in data and adequate information before making recommendations. Let us allow the mandated institutions to complete their work and present their findings,” he advised.
The CEO also called for unity in the aftermath of the tragedy, warning against politicising the event.
“Administration is about the success of institutions, society, and the nation as a whole. Issues that strike at the heart of the country must be kept above politics,” he said.
Dr. Asafo urged Ghanaians to take environmental responsibility seriously, from homes and offices to forests and public spaces to prevent future tragedies and safeguard the nation’s future.
Daniel Adomako, known publicly as Sir Obama Pokuase, has been granted bail by the Ghana Police Service following his arrest over a Facebook post that claimed some Ghanaian civilians were in possession of MG3 machine guns.

Confirming the incident to Citi News on Thursday, August 14, the Assembly Member for the Amerfa Kyekyewere Electoral Area, Samuel Baiden, said the assailants traced Awal to his residence and opened fire on him.

He has since called on the government and security agencies to strengthen security in the area to help prevent such violent attacks in the future.
Hiplife Grandpapa Reggie Rockstone has defended Stonebwoy after some netizens accused him of bending down to pick up money sprayed on the floor during Davido’s white wedding ceremony.
Recently, Davido and his wife, Chioma Adeleke, held their white wedding on August 9, 2025, where Stonebwoy, who was a guest, also performed.
During his performance, Stonebwoy was captured in a viral video picking up his bracelet that dropped on the floor.

Some netizens, after spotting this, have since had the wrong impression.
They have accused the “Jejereje” hitmaker of bending down to pick up some of the dollar bills that were sprayed on the floor.
But addressing this, Reggie Rockstone has joined Efia Odo and Stonebwoy’s wife, Dr Louisa, to dismiss such allegations.
In a post shared on Instagram on August 13, 2025, Reggie Rockstone noted that Stonebwoy simply picked up his bracelet, adding that the trolls are unnecessary and a sign of utter witchcraft.
“First of all, if he picked that money off the floor, remember who that money is for… The money they sprayed on him is actually for him. He can pick up the money because it is for him. Do you guys pay his school fees, or do you people take care of him?

“On the surface, it just sounds like trolling. You people think it is normal, but it isn’t. It is witchcraft. It isn’t normal. If you people don’t stop this shit, you will suffer tenfold,” he said.
Rockstone added that even if Stonebwoy had picked the sprayed money, it was meant for him.
“All human beings should be humble. You are not too big to pick up money from the floor. You think Stonebwoy came from a rich family. You know the man hustled, you know where he came from.
“Even if he had picked up the money from the floor, I still would be clapping from a negro,” he added.

Leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lord Hamah has penned a heartfelt tribute to Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Dr Alhaji Murtala Mohammed following their demise in a tragic helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Tributes have poured in from far and near for Dr Omane Boamah, who served as Defence Minister, and Dr. Murtala Mohammed, who was the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, after they died alongside six others in last week’s helicopter crash.
Lord Hamah, who is the brother of former Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hamah, described the two NDC stalwarts as statesmen who will forever be remembered.
‘When comrades become statesmen’ – Victoria Hamah’s pays emotional tribute to Omane Boamah, Murtala
Read Lord Hamah’s full tribute below:
Wednesday, the 6th of August, has registered itself in the archives of history as one of the most mournful days in the political annals of the Fourth Republic. Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, together with six other persons, perished in a helicopter crash.
That day can only be rivalled by the untimely demise of President John Evans Atta Mills, who was seeking a second mandate to realise his Better Ghana vision, building upon the foundation blocks he had laid for the accelerated development and progress of the nation.
President John Mahama could not hold back his tears in public. Omane and Murtala, as they were affectionately called, were attending an occasion related to the struggle against the galamsey menace and its attendant destruction of the country’s ecology, an important component of the RESET Ghana Agenda. This initiative placed a herculean task on the Ministry of Environment and required a readjustment of the core aims of the Ghana Armed Forces to root out illegal mining, which poses an existential threat to the nation. The rest of the story is known to all.
These two men, who in the spring of their years had already attained the status of admirable statesmen, will forever be remembered as the leaders Ghana never had.
To the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Ghana, we have lost two standard-bearers of the principles of probity and accountability, social justice, and economic democracy.
Watch preparations in full swing for state funeral of helicopter crash victims
However, to me and my comrades in the progressive tradition of politics, we have lost revered companions, unifiers, and inspirers.
The duo collaborated with us in the student struggles of the first decade of this century. In 2003, Omane Boamah, who, on record, led several student demonstrations to hold the government accountable for diverting taxes meant for education to frivolous “elephant” projects, as he termed them, documented his activism in his published book: GETFUND: The Account of a NUGS President.
Dr Omane Boamah famously declared at a student rally that half of the arrears the government owed the GETFUND was enough to solve the residential accommodation crisis in all tertiary institutions in the country. His action had significant ramifications. It partly inspired the Friday, September 19 student uprising, which led to the alleged vandalisation of the Vice-Chancellor’s lodge, and the subsequent dismissal of D.M. Ofori-Atta, Godwin Akufo-Antwi, Christian Degbey, and myself.
The High Court sitting in Accra declared the dismissal null and void, and we were reinstated.
Before other literary works such as The Pentagon Robbery, which was co-authored by D.M. Ofori-Atta and me, against the privatisation and commercialisation of residential facilities, there was a growing resistance.
In 2006, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa was inspired by the spirit of that historic publication to write The State of Coma in 2016, a lamentation of the deplorable state of Ghana’s premier university and a critique of official high-handedness against student protest leaders. He particularly emphasised the dismissal of the four students and eulogised the 2004 unprecedented legal collapse of the Legon Ivory Tower.
This earned him his removal as a member of the Disciplinary Committee for Junior Members and his residency in Commonwealth Hall. In a twist of fate, in the same year, he was elected President of NUGS, with the endearing efforts and assistance of Omane Boamah and Murtala, whose contributions need no further mention.
I never imagined mourning my successor – Former Minister of Defence
In 2007, thousands of students staged a protest at the seat of government in Osu, along with other diverse and unorthodox acts of resistance, leading to the arrest and detention of several student leaders.
Comrade Murtala was an ardent Nkrumahist. He will be remembered for his fiery, invigorating speeches at the weekly Friday evening Vandal Forum, which hosted dozens of notable public personalities and attracted students from across the Legon campus and the then Institute of Professional Studies (IPS).
He succeeded in connecting the programme with Sammy Ablordepey and the management of Radio Gold. He unified almost all student leaders and centres of organisation, leading to a remarkable outcome in the fiercely contested 2008 electoral revolt that ousted the governing NPP. This was achieved together with John Jinapor, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, Omane Boamah, Victoria Hamah, Peter Boamah Otokunor, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, comrades from KNUST, and myself.
Murtala can also be remembered for his contribution to the Palestinian Solidarity Committee, which had President John Mahama, then Minority Spokesperson on Communications in Parliament, as a leading light. Both Dr. Omane Boamah and Comrade
Murtala Mohammed, hailing from Legon Hall, were accorded the rare honour of being named Associate Vandals by the then Chief Vandal, Eric Oppong-Yeboah.
My experience with them during the embryonic stages of the Social Forum of Ghana (SFG) remains a great treasure.
Comrade Murtala and Comrade Omane Boamah will forever be remembered as patriots of the radical tradition of freedom.
We are consoled by the saying of the sages of India: “It is only in the darkest night that we see the shining of the stars.”
Wishing them glory and eternity.
Fare thee well, comrades!

Afro-dancehall star Stonebwoy has broken his silence on the much-talked-about seizure of Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini Urus by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Speaking in an interview during his stay in Jamaica, the BHIM Nation president was asked directly whether he had “snitched” on his long-time industry rival, leading to the luxury car’s confiscation.
Stonebwoy laughed off the allegation but hinted that he knew far more about the situation than the public.
“When you follow the news properly, me and some man will know the truth before the truth comes out. From where I stand, you can’t two-talk, you know. I’m an insider; I know a whole heap of things you can’t know,” he said.
Without naming names, Stonebwoy pointed to a culture in the entertainment industry where not everything that glitters is gold.
He noted that many feel pressured to flash it for the cameras, even when they cannot truly afford it.
“It’s just hype. Many people want to really flash it. But believe me, not everybody can have it. Some of the things I know, if others knew too, they wouldn’t sleep,” he remarked.
The hitmaker also made it clear he is not one to bring another man down.
“I don’t try to cross people. I pray your thing goes well for you, and my thing goes well for me. But you find the opposite in a lot of people,” he said.
While he stopped short of directly confirming or denying any role in the saga, Stonebwoy’s cryptic comments have set social media buzzing.
For many women, dressing for church is more than just picking an outfit—it’s about expressing reverence, modesty, and personal style in a harmonious way. The right church attire should convey respect for the sacred environment while allowing your personality and elegance to shine through. Among the most graceful and versatile options for this purpose are maxi dresses and boubou gowns, both celebrated for their beauty, comfort, and sophistication.
Maxi dresses remain a timeless favorite for church wear. Their floor-length design offers modest coverage, while the gentle flow of the fabric ensures comfort during long services. Floral maxi dresses, for example, pair a modest neckline and either short or long sleeves with lively patterns that exude femininity and warmth. These vibrant designs can uplift the mood, making them ideal for Sunday services, choir performances, or church celebrations.
For a more understated yet elegant appearance, solid-colored maxi dresses with lace accents, subtle ruffles, or fine embroidery are an excellent choice. Soft pastel tones—such as blush pink, mint, or lavender—radiate calmness, while earthy shades like olive, camel, or dusty rose add depth and sophistication.
Boubou gowns, on the other hand, offer a regal and culturally rich alternative. Originating from traditional African fashion, these loose, flowing garments provide complete modesty while making a bold style statement. Crafted from luxurious fabrics and adorned with intricate prints or embroidery, boubous are perfect for special church occasions such as weddings, thanksgiving services, and festive gatherings.
To finish your look, opt for simple yet refined accessories—perhaps a pearl necklace, delicate earrings, or a tasteful brooch. Pair with comfortable heels or low sandals to ensure ease of movement. Whether you choose the modern charm of a maxi dress or the cultural elegance of a boubou, these outfits guarantee a confident, respectful, and stylish presence in the sanctuary.

This follows a one-week intensive training held between August 11–14, 2025, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, under the auspices of ECOWAS.
The Presidential Envoy on Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has clarified that his office is not dedicated solely to receiving and reviewing prophecies about the nation or high-profile public officials.
Speaking to JoyNews’ Maxwell Agbagba, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah said the role of his office extends far beyond prophecy evaluation, with responsibilities that include collaborations with ECOWAS, the African Union, the United Nations, and local faith bodies of various religions.
He revealed that more than 200 prophecies have been submitted following the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives. However, he stressed that most will not be acted upon.
“By and large, 70–80% is of no substance,” he noted. “Then you look at the rest of the 20% and you sift through, and maybe 2–3–5% may deserve some further probe. It’s not a full-time job or an office set up solely to receive prophecies; that’s not how it works.”
Explaining the rationale behind the process, the envoy said it followed claims by some prophets that they had foreseen the crash. He emphasised that sensitive predictions with possible security implications should be privately reported rather than announced publicly.
“If you say a Ghana Air Force plane is going to crash, whichever way, it’s a security matter. Those specific ones, we are saying, don’t put it out there in a raw form that will create problems. We’ve created a WhatsApp platform and an email address. Send it to us, and then we will review,” he said.
Mr Afriyie Ankrah added that the Bible itself instructs that prophecies be tested. “Testing means there is room for review, to assess and evaluate, because some will definitely be chaff. There’s a lot that is completely bogus and will be discarded. But there may be a few that have some substance.”
He also addressed public criticism and misconceptions about his role. “I got my appointment letter about two weeks ago. People didn’t know about the office, so when the statement came out, maybe some thought an office had been set up solely to collect prophecies. That’s why you saw all those memes. But the office is meant to coordinate with all religious bodies, Christian, Muslim, and others, to help foster unity and oneness in the country.”
Highlighting the importance of his work, he said religion plays a dominant role in Ghanaian life. “If you look at the last population census, the religious community constitutes over 90% of the population. They are critical in society. Governance is about protecting and advancing the interests of citizens, and faith is part of our social reality.”

Robert Klah is a popular entertainment personality
Media personality Robert Klah has criticised Nigerian filmmaker Nosa Rex over his recent tirade against Ghanaian TV stations.
This follows a post by Rex on his social media account accusing a TV station of airing his movie without permission. He went on to launch insults at Ghanaian media houses, sparking backlash from several notable Ghanaians.
Movie Piracy Saga: ‘There is so much chaos in the industry’ – Ashis
Speaking on Hitz FM on August 13, 2025, Klah acknowledged that while public complaints can raise awareness, indiscriminate attacks and insults are uncalled for.
“Yes, you can lament. If you lament, you are creating awareness. We will hear about the publicity you are creating, capture the content of your publicity, and give it volume and voice… But then, at the back of that, you are insulting; it doesn’t speak well.
“Tomorrow, you will come to Ghana for an interview on a TV station—after you insulted all TV stations. I think that is inappropriate, and we have to call it out: you can’t say that,” he stated.
Klah stressed that he does not defend copyright infringement, emphasising that the unauthorised use of creative work amounts to theft.
However, he urged aggrieved parties to follow proper channels, such as Ghana’s Copyright Office, which has successfully handled similar cases for local creatives.
“Yes, you should call it out. And if you’re asking about bodies responsible, the Copyright Office is there. They’ve done it for a Ghanaian, and they can do it for you. If you go through the right channel, it will be done,” he added.
Nosa Rex apologises to Ghanaians over movie piracy outburst
Meanwhile, Nosa Rex has apologised for his comments, clarifying that his words were directed specifically at TV stations involved in piracy.

Dr Samuel Amo Tobbin laying a wreath at Jubilee House
The Group Chairman of Tobinco, Dr Samuel Amo Tobbin, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, together with the company’s Board, paid respects to the victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash at the Ceremonial Garden of the Jubilee House.
The tragic incident claimed eight lives, including Ghana’s Defence Minister, Environment Minister, and other senior government officials who were on an official mission in the Ashanti Region.
According to officials, the helicopter went down while transporting the delegation to inspect illegal mining sites.
Dr Tobbin and his team laid wreaths in honour of the deceased.
The August 6, 2025 crash has been described as one of the worst air tragedies in Ghana’s recent history.
The government declared three days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the country.
The victims, remembered for their service to the nation, were accorded full state honours in a ceremony attended by political leaders, the security services, and members of the public.
Tobinco Group’s tribute adds to the growing list of institutions and individuals who have joined in mourning the loss, underscoring the sense of national unity and solidarity in the wake of the disaster.
Two of the victims, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and former Agriculture Minister and Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, have already been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The remaining six will be given a state funeral on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square.
The Japan National Stadium is not new, its towering frame, all warm timber lines and steel grace, have already seen the world gather once before.
But in 2021, when the Tokyo Olympics took place a year late, the stands were ghosted by an invisible enemy because of the restrictions of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The tracks still thundered, but the roars came from TV screens, not the grandstands.
Four years later, the ghosts are gone. From 13 to 21 September 2025, Tokyo’s air will be alive again, the same city that bowed politely to the world in silence will now sing.
Over 2,000 athletes from about 200 countries will step into the heat haze of late summer, chasing 147 medals across 49 events. The difference this time? You’ll hear every heartbeat.
What to Expect: A symphony in nine days
Nine days of competition is not just a schedule, it’s a story in chapters. The sprints, where victories are decided in blinks; the marathons, where every kilometre is a test of spirit; the field events, where stillness and explosion live seconds apart.
This is the 20th edition of the World Athletics Championships, the global summit where records fall, careers ignite, and legends sometimes end in heartbreak.
It is track and field’s ultimate meeting place, where the stars you know share a start line with names you’ll never forget after Tokyo.
Underdogs who might steal the light
Ghana’s Saminu and Azamati
From Ghana’s quiet northern village to the world’s fastest lane, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has become a sprint sensation.
From Ashaiman Market to Breaking Records: The resilient rise of Abdul Rasheed Saminu
In May 2025, he shattered his own national 100m record with a blazing 9.86s, only to demolish that again in July with 9.84s, now the third-fastest time in the world this year, second-fastest ever in NCAA history, and Ghana’s new sprint benchmark.
Watch how Rasheed Saminu finished second to Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson in 100m showdown
He already proved his mettle: semi-finalist in Paris 2024, and key part of Ghana’s gold-winning 4×100m relay at the 2024 African Championships.
A linguistic polyglot from Nanumba, Ghana, Saminu is no mere national hero; he’s a global standout.
Beside him, Benjamin Azamati remains a formidable presence. The first Ghanaian to run 100m in sub-10 s at the Tokyo Olympics (9.97 s), he remains part of Ghana’s sprint vanguard.
‘Records are meant to be broken’ – Azamati reacts as Saminu smashes his 100m record
Sorato Shimizu
The locals will already know the name Sorato Shimizu, 16 years old, and already the fastest U-18 sprinter in history with a 10.00s 100m.
In the Tokyo night, with the home crowd chanting in waves, that 10.00 might not be enough to medal, but it might be enough to make a career.
From Australia comes Gout Gout, 17, a boy with a name you don’t forget and a stride you can’t unsee. His junior records make him dangerous.
The question is whether he can keep his nerve when the lanes beside him are filled with Olympic champions.
And there’s Ethan Strand of the US, the 1500m upstart with a 3:30s personal best, and Madison Wiltrout, making her global debut in the javelin.
They aren’t favourites, but Tokyo has always loved a surprise, from the streets of Shinjuku to the roar of the stadium.
Stars who want their shine back
Every championship has its redemption arcs. Zharnel Hughes, Britain’s sprinter with bronze in Budapest 2023, comes to Tokyo heavier with experience and sharper from recent wins.
Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s sprint-hurdle queen, exploded onto the world stage with a world record in Eugene, only to be sidelined by a careless doping whereabouts failure.
Cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, she now arrives in Tokyo with redemption on her mind and the hurdles world title in her sights.
One of the most stunning upsets in Paris 2024 came from Jamaica, once a sprinting royalty. No Jamaican woman medaled in the 100m or 200m at Paris, the first time since 1988, and even the relay teams failed to perform.
It was a historic decline for a nation synonymous with sprinting excellence. Jamaica’s rebuilding starts now, with old guards like Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shericka Jackson recovering, new stars emerging, and Tokyo 2025 offering a stage to reclaim sprinting pride.
Giants waiting to continue their dominance
The World Championships are never short of towering names, athletes whose mere presence sends ripples through the stadium before the starting gun, the throw, or the jump.
In Tokyo, several such giants are primed to either extend their dominance or defend their thrones from hungry challengers.
Akani Simbine – Africa’s fastest man, still chasing that elusive global gold, and Tokyo might just be the stage where his experience tips the scales.
Ferdinand Omanyala – Africa’s sprint sensation and Commonwealth champion, bringing raw power and fearless starts that can upset the pecking order.
Femke Bol – The reigning queen of the 400m hurdles, blending elegance with raw power. After skipping parts of the 2025 indoor season to focus on recovery and relays, she returns to Tokyo sharper and hungrier than ever.
Sydney McLaughlin – Olympic and world record-holder in the 400m hurdles, known for precision and relentless drive. In Tokyo, she’s ready to test herself against Bol in a clash of titans.
Sha’Carri Richardson – Defending 100m world champion, fast and fiery. A recent airport incident stirred headlines, but she arrives with a semifinal bye and a mission to let her sprinting do the talking.
Sha’Carri Richardson arrested for alleged assault on boyfriend at Seattle Airport
Julien Alfred – The reigning Olympic 100m queen from Saint Lucia, brings Caribbean pride and blistering pace to Tokyo.
Fresh off her historic Paris gold, and for a nation still celebrating its first Olympic medal, Alfred’s quest for more glory makes her one of the brightest stars waiting to shine.
Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar – High Jump): Olympic co-gold medalist whose graceful, almost effortless leaps keep him in the conversation for every major title.
Ryan Crouser (USA – Shot Put): The big man with the big throws, world record holder and double Olympic champion.
Neeraj Chopra (India – Javelin): The reigning Olympic and World champion, carrying the hopes of a billion people with a golden arm.
Then there are the titans: Noah Lyles, Faith Kipyegon, Mondo Duplantis, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Yulimar Rojas.
They’ve known the view from the top, but in Tokyo, even kings and queens can be dethroned. In an arena this intense, glory has no guarantee.
Giants who could struggle
A championship in Tokyo is no easy feat. The humidity is a slow burn. The travel, the time zones, the sensory overload of a city that never stops moving, it all gnaws at the legs.
Some stars arrive tired, carrying seasons heavy with Diamond League battles.
Others face rising challengers who aren’t afraid of names, records, or reputations.
Even for the best, Tokyo might prove too much.
The story of these Championships might be as much about who falls as who flies.
Tokyo’s Pulse: Culture meets competition
Outside the Japan National Stadium, the streets will hum with the smell of grilled yakitori, the chatter of fans draped in flags, and the rhythmic clapping unique to Japanese sporting crowds.
The race walks will wind past the Meiji Shrine Outer Garden, a place where cedar-scented air meets the tick-tick-tick of racing feet.
This is the first major athletics event in Japan since the pandemic years, a chance for the nation to welcome the world without barriers.
For locals, it’s redemption. For visitors, it’s immersion: neon Shibuya crossings, calm temple gardens, and the hypnotic efficiency of the Shinkansen.
When it ends
When the final baton is passed, when the last javelin lands, the stories will scatter, to Accra, to Addis Ababa, to Kingston, to Brisbane, to small towns where the underdogs will return heroes.
The champions will wear their gold lightly or heavily, depending on how hard it was to win.
And Tokyo? Tokyo would have done what it could not in 2021: show the world, in person, that it is a city built to host the biggest stage in sport.
The stadium will sleep again, but the echo of nine days will last much longer.

Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, says the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight public servants remains one of the most painful tragedies in Ghana’s history but insists that as humans, “we cannot question God.”
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Dr. Ofosu Ampofo admitted that it is hard to come to terms with the incident.
“One question that God has not given us an answer to till now is why—why them? Why did this happen? Why should they go through such an unfortunate incident? That’s the only answer God has not given us,” he said.
“Even the Bible says in Romans that you cannot search for God’s knowledge. Who are we, as mortal beings, to question Him and ask how it happened?” he quizzed.
He stressed that the deceased were in the care of some of the best-trained pilots in the Ghana Armed Forces, making the tragedy even more shocking.
“I believe these pilots were among the best. The Minister of Defence is in charge of the army, air force, and navy, so will opt for the best of the best. Ministers and other dignitaries will not just fly with any pilot. It cannot be that inexperienced pilots were used, but God knows best, and we cannot question Him,” he stated.
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo, who is also the Board Chairman of COCOBOD and a Policy Advisor at the Office of the President, described the tragedy as “like a film”—something too surreal to believe.
“It is very difficult for us to swallow. I still don’t believe this is what has happened. It’s like a film show. You can’t fathom it,” he said.
He called on the Ghana Armed Forces to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash and prevent such incidents in the future.
From an Islamic perspective, he acknowledged that death comes when it is destined but expressed that the victims “did not deserve this painful death.”
“The Muslims believe that if it’s your time, whatever God has planned will happen. But I believe these people did not deserve this death. It is painful,” he lamented.
He also saluted the “gallant fallen men” for their ultimate sacrifice in service to Ghana.
“What is left is for us, as a nation, to come together to fight the illegal mining they fought against—to make their souls happy at least,” he urged.
A state burial for the victims is scheduled for Friday, with final preparations already underway.
President John Dramani Mahama has committed to a “ruthless and relentless campaign” to end illegal mining, known as ‘galamsey’, to end the menace that has resulted in significant losses.
The pledge follows the tragic military helicopter crash on August 6 that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers who were at the forefront of the anti-galamsey fight.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed the President’s new resolve to JoyNews journalist Blessed Sogah today (August 14), after signing a book of condolences for the victims.
The minister’s remarks signal a major shift in the government’s approach, which many view as a decisive response to a crisis that has spiralled into a national tragedy.
“I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed in this country,” Ablakwa stated. “President Mahama is going to lead a very ruthless and relentless campaign against Galamsey. He has not minced words at all.”
Mr Ablakwa’s comments shed light on an urgent mini-cabinet meeting held earlier in the day, where the President reportedly made his intentions clear.
“We had a brief cabinet meeting earlier today, and the president was very clear. There was no ambiguity that he would be leading a war that we have never seen to deal with this existential threat once and for all,” the minister added.
The late Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, along with six other public servants, died while on a mission to launch a community mining scheme, a key initiative to bring some illegal miners into a regulated framework.
Their deaths have galvanised the government to take a more aggressive stance.
The new campaign comes amid alarming data on the severe environmental and economic toll of illegal mining.
According to recent reports, over 19,000 hectares of cocoa farmland, a pillar of Ghana’s economy, have been destroyed by galamsey.
The use of toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide has polluted more than 60% of Ghana’s major water bodies, including the Pra and Ankobra rivers, raising fears that the nation may have to import water by 2030.
Past efforts by successive governments, including Operation Vanguard and Operation Halt, have often been met with limited success.
This new “ruthless” approach is expected to be a more comprehensive and sustained effort, targeting not just the miners but the powerful sponsors behind them.

President John Mahama’s government has banned foreign currency in all state contracts, enforcing a long-dormant 2006 law to stabilize the embattled cedi.
The directive, effective immediately, requires even externally funded projects to use Ghana’s local currency a move experts call overdue but fraught with enforcement challenges.
Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson detailed the policy in the mid-year budget review, targeting what economist Professor Godfred Bokpin labels “fiscally suicidal” dollarization. Between 2020 and 2024, the cedi plunged 135% against the dollar, while foreign reserves shrunk by 40%. “Pricing contracts in dollars created artificial demand that bled our economy,” argued former central bank researcher Dr. Nii Kwaku Sowa.
The shift aims to curb inflation, boost local contractors, and restore monetary control. Bank of Ghana could now maneuver interest rates more effectively without state-induced forex pressure. Veteran economist Kwame Pianim welcomed the symbolism: “If government doesn’t believe in the cedi, who should?”
Nigeria’s 2021 similar ban temporarily stabilized the naira and saved $2 billion in outflows. Yet IMANI Africa analyst Dr. Esi Yankah warns: “This can’t be another paper tiger. Enforcement must bite.” Past laxity rendered the 2006 Foreign Exchange Act irrelevant.
For Ghana’s businesses, stability could lower borrowing costs and spur investment. But success hinges on rigid compliance across ministries and opposition backing for what President Mahama frames as economic sovereignty’s frontline.

Ghanaian woman dies in Canada
Previously, YEN.com.gh reported that a Ghanaian woman living in Canada died after refusing to eat or take medicine due to her religious beliefs.
Cecilia Louis, aka Aunty Ceci, reportedly refused medical help and relied on her faith in Prophet Adom Kyei Duah of Philadelphia Church to heal her.
News of her death sparked heated discussions online, with many blaming extreme religious practices and calling for the preacher to caution his followers.

Ghanaian politician and member of the ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, representing the Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Yaw Adutwum has expressed optimism in becoming the NPP flagbearer in the next general election.
Following his successful receipt of the nomination form on August 14, 2025, the former minister of education stated that “We are on track, and by the grace of God, my party, I believe, will vote for me and make me the flagbearer of the NPP.”
This year’s International Youth Day has been celebrated in Accra with Executive Director of the Springboard Road Show Foundation, Comfort Ocran, reminding young people that the day is more than a date on the calendar, but a call to action.
Comfort Ocran reflected on the 2025 UN theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond”, noting that it is a powerful reminder that young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow but the changemakers of today.
“The future is here, and the future starts now,” she declared, urging participants to take the global goals and make them real within their own communities.
The celebration, held at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church on August 12, also marked the launch of the Teenpreneurship Bootcamp under the bold theme “Next Is Now.”
Organised at no cost to its 300 participants, the program is designed to equip teenagers with the skills, mindset, and confidence to act immediately.
By embracing entrepreneurship, innovation, and practical problem-solving today, these young people are not only investing in their own futures but also contributing directly to sustainable development and community transformation.
Another highlight of the day was the unveiling of the second edition of Impact Stories under the Ghana Grows Program, aptly dubbed “Rays of Hope”.
These stories celebrate the resilience and achievements of young women and men transforming agriculture, breaking barriers, and creating local solutions with national and global relevance.
Through the Ghana Grows Program, over 448,000 young people have been impacted. Notably, 76% of participants are young women, and 1.91% are persons with disabilities. 20,000 young people have secured jobs and sustainable livelihoods, while more than 2,400 Youth Ambassadors have been trained to champion agriculture and entrepreneurship nationwide.
In addition, the extended Empower 360 component of Ghana Grows has equipped over 1,116 young women with practical skills and provided 156 young participants with startup kits to launch their own businesses.
The Ghana Grows Program is being implemented by the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with a consortium led by the Springboard Road Show Foundation. It aims at highlighting the opportunities available in the extended value chain for agriculture, agribusiness, and ATVET.
Speaking at the program, Mr. Joseph Boateng, Lead, Market to Impact at the Mastercard Foundation, stated: “The SDGs are not distant targets set in boardrooms. They are lived realities in our villages, towns, and cities. As we mark International Youth Day, let us commit to moving from voice to impact, turning ideas into enterprises, passion into policy, and energy into enduring change.”
Technical Director of the Springboard Road Show Foundation, Rev. Albert Ocran, also spoke to the “Next Is Now” theme, encouraging participants to take deliberate action.
“Inspiration without execution is only a dream. What you do today, the projects you start, the risks you take, the ideas you pursue, will define the world you live in tomorrow,” he said.
The event closed with renewed energy, as young people committed to living out the charge of the Executive Director, to turn skills into solutions, relationships into collaborations, and opportunities into lasting change. With passion, purpose, and persistence, they left the celebration ready to ensure that their next step would not just be inspired, but action-driven.
Three people have died in a road accident involving an O.A. Transport minibus at Kyiraburoso, near Adansi Asokwa, on the Bekwai–New Edubiase stretch of the Ashanti Region.
The vehicle, with registration number AS 8914-22, was reportedly travelling from Accra to Obuasi when the incident occurred on Wednesday night.
Fomena District Police Commander, DSP Samson Wunyi Mumuni, confirmed the incident to Adom News.
DSP Mumuni said that the minibus, which was carrying 14 passengers, crashed into a faulty Kia truck parked in its lane.
The truck, he explained, had been hooked up to a tanker heading towards Assin Fosu.
According to DSP Mumuni, the collision resulted in multiple injuries and the loss of three lives at the scene.
Emergency services later transported the injured to nearby medical facilities.
President John Dramani Mahama has requested American experts to help study and analyse the black box retrieved from the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives last week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said.
The Minister confirmed that the government had formally written to the Americans to come and assist with the investigation as independent officers, to avoid any suspicion.
According to the Minister, the American experts would soon arrive in the country, having already received the government’s letter and responded.
“I can confirm to you that, on the instruction of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, we have formally requested the Americans to come in and assist.
“We all know that they have considerable expertise when it comes to these matters. So, the indication we have received from the Americans is that they are very much willing to assist. The Americans have responded, and we are expecting the arrival of American experts soon to help us with the investigations,” he said.
He emphasised that the government believed bringing in independent experts would ensure the outcome of the investigations was acceptable to all and inspire confidence in the process.
Mr Ablakwa added that nobody had anything to hide, stressing that it was important the process was carried out thoroughly and met international gold standards and best practice.
Contact with Chinese manufacturers
The Minister said the government had also made contact with the Chinese manufacturers, who are on standby to assist with the investigation.
“I can confirm to you that the Chinese have already been contacted and the manufacturers are standing by. Indeed, the briefing we have received from the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is that there is a standing protocol where the black box must be, as it were, made available to the manufacturer — in this case, the manufacturers of the Z9 helicopter.
“So, they are standing by. But, in the President’s wisdom, he does not want anything to proceed without independent experts. I think that it is quite fair so that we will just avoid all doubts, so that people will not raise issues of probably conflict of interest — maybe people with some kind of special interest trying to cover up and all of that,” he stated.
The Minister said the President’s decision was commendable, as the Americans were far removed from the process and could provide the independent expertise required.
He also expressed gratitude to American partners for agreeing to assist the government.
Transparency
The Minister said the President wanted utmost transparency and assured that Ghanaians would be kept informed at every stage of the investigation.
“At all steps of the way — when these experts arrive, when the investigations commence, when the investigations progress, when the investigations conclude — every stage of the way the Ghanaian people should know about what is happening,” he said.
He assured the public that the government would not conceal any development related to the investigation.
“I have had some civil society organisations and some other analysts raise concern about, if you like, lack of information about the investigative processes. It is just because it hasn’t commenced.
“We are waiting for the experts before these investigations are done. That is why you probably have not been getting regular updates on the investigation — of course, taking into account national security considerations,” he said.
He emphasised that most of the heroes who died represented good governance, which required transparency, accountability, and a strong commitment to truth.
Mr Ablakwa said it was in the country’s interest to honour the crash victims “by making sure that even as they are no longer with us, these ideals which they have always represented, which they stand for, must continue to be espoused and actually advanced in a very concrete manner”.

Accra, Aug. 14, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama will spearhead what government describes as a “relentless and ruthless campaign” to end illegal mining, or galamsey, once and for all, Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced.
He said: “There was no ambiguity in Cabinet today. The President will lead a war against galamsey the likes of which we have never seen before. It will be ruthless, relentless, and aimed at eradicating this canker permanently.”
The Minister emphasized, “I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed in this country.”
Mr. Ablakwa, speaking at the signing of the book of condolence for the victims of the recent helicopter crash at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, said the tragedy had deepened government’s resolve to confront the menace, which he described as a grave and existential threat to Ghana’s future.
He said the President’s stance was not simply about enforcing environmental regulations but about protecting lives, safeguarding national security, and honouring the memory of the fallen officers who had been committed to the nation’s progress.
“Illegal mining continues to destroy our water bodies, degrade our environment, and endanger communities,” he stated.
The Minister said the sacrifice of the ministers and service men must inspire a decisive national effort to end the illegal mining scourge.
He said government would employ every available legal, operational, and diplomatic tool to dismantle the networks that sustain illegal mining.
Mr. Ablakwa called for national unity in the fight, stressing that the success of the campaign would require cooperation from traditional leaders, local authorities, civil society, and citizens in affected communities.
He said the fight was not for government alone and that it was one for the country’s sustainability.
The Foreign Minister warned that the scale of the problem meant the measures ahead would be tough and potentially disruptive to those benefiting from illegal mining but insisted that the long-term benefits far outweighed the short-term discomfort.
The Minister stressed that the campaign was also about honouring the memory of the fallen officers, saying: “I believe that as a nation we should all commit that this ultimate sacrifice shall not be in vain, that we shall honour their memory by ensuring that this galamsey menace…we will deal with…once and for all.”
He explained that protecting the environment and preserving water bodies for future generations would be one of the most fitting tributes to their service.
He noted that the recent tragedy had united Ghanaians in grief and reminded the nation of the urgent need to protect its natural resources.
“It is also important to immortalize their memory by ensuring that we protect our environment, we protect our water bodies and we keep this country safe for the generations coming after us,” he said, adding that the fight against illegal mining was a fight for the country’s long-term survival.
