Cocoa farmer-group endorses new producer price

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

The Ghana Cocoa, Coffee and Sheanut Farmers Association (COCOSHE), the largest cocoa farmers’ group, has endorsed the new producer price of GH¢3,228.75 per 64kg bag for the 2025/2026 season, describing the adjustment as a step in the right direction.

COCOSHE expressed appreciation to government and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for what it called a responsive policy that reflects the contributions of farmers to the national economy.

The new rate, equivalent to GH¢51,660 per tonne, represents 70 percent of the achieved Free-on-Board (FoB) price for the season. This marks a notable increase from the previous season’s 63.9 percent share.

“In the face of a stronger cedi, it would have been easy to cut prices but government chose to support farmers,” said Alhaji Alhassan Bukari, national president of COCOSHE. This decision underscores a commitment to the welfare of farmers and sustainability of the sector, he added.

He acknowledged that during the final quarter of the 2024/2025 season, COCOBOD maintained the producer price at GH¢3,100 per bag despite exchange rate movements that might have pressured a downward revision.

COCOSHE, however, is calling for the reintroduction of input subsidies such as free fertiliser, insecticides and fungicides as well as deployment of spraying machines.

These interventions – expected to begin in the 2025/2026 crop year, the association says – are essential to boosting productivity and farmer income. Farmers also welcomed the Ghana Cocoa Traceability System, which is aimed at improving global market compliance – including with the European Union Deforestation Regulation.

COCOSHE praised plans for a new tertiary scholarship scheme for children of cocoa farmers, expected to launch in the 2026/2027 academic year. The group also wants greater investment in extension services and education around the new traceability system.

In a related development, the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI) congratulated government on officially opening its 2025/2026 cocoa season and its announcement of a new producer price.

CIGC applauded the bold step as an essential contribution in ongoing efforts to create a more equitable and sustainable global cocoa market.

For the past four years, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana – representing over 60% of global cocoa production – have worked in close collaboration to align policies on farmgate pricing, market transparency and value distribution.

Van der Sar picks Onana over De Gea in ultimate goalkeeper showdown

Andre Onana is a goalkeeper of Manchester United Andre Onana is a goalkeeper of Manchester United

Dutch legend, Edwin Van der Sar has made it clear where his loyalties lie in the ongoing debate over Manchester United’s recent goalkeeping talents, picking Andre Onana over David de Gea.

Speaking during a light-hearted “pick one” challenge, the former United and Ajax shot-stopper was asked to choose between the two men who have both played at Old Trafford in recent years.

Without hesitation, Van der Sar replied: “Andre Onana.”

The Dutchman worked closely with the Cameroonian during their time together at Ajax, and his decision came despite De Gea’s glittering United career, spanning over 500 appearances, multiple Player of the Year awards, and a reputation for breathtaking reflex saves.

Onana, who arrived from Inter Milan in 2023, has experienced both highs and lows in Manchester but retains Van der Sar’s faith amid ongoing transfer rumours.

The challenge also saw Van der Sar make a series of other eye-catching selections. He chose De Gea over Juventus’ Michele Di Gregorio, AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, and Inter’s Yann Sommer, but still placed Onana above Spurs’ Guglielmo Vicario.

Interestingly, he picked Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez ahead of Onana, and over Arsenal’s David Raya, before favouring Manchester City’s Ederson in that matchup.

Ederson was also Van der Sar’s choice over Jan Oblak, Unai Simón, and Alisson Becker.

Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer then beat Courtois and Gianluigi Donnarumma, and in the final twist, Neuer even topped Van der Sar himself.

How cycling is providing hope to Rwanda’s female riders

0

Olivia Maniragena has been racing through life, dealing with a lot at a young age.

Orphaned at 14 and responsible for raising three siblings, she also became a mother of two before reaching 20.

Now 21, the Rwandan has found stability through cycling and is gearing up for the UCI Road World Championships in her homeland next month, where she is hoping to compete in the inaugural women’s Under-23 race.

For Maniragena, life on two wheels has always meant a level of freedom.

She first learned how to ride a bike at the age of seven, and over the years cycling became more than just a skill. It became her means of survival.

“Cycling helped me take care of my family. Fetching water, collecting firewood, running errands and as a mode of transport,” Maniragena tells BBC Sport Africa when discussing her early life.

“It brings me happiness. When I ride, it takes away my anxiety and my depression.”

But her freedom was short-lived.

Following the death of her mother in 2013 and her father five years later, she struggled to support herself despite taking on various jobs and fell pregnant twice in her teens.

“I believed the father of my children would be my support system, but after three years, just after our second baby, he left,” she recalls.

“I was left to care for my three siblings and my two children alone. Life was hard.”

Maniragena’s journey into elite cycling began when she joined Bikes for Future, an all-female team backed by humanitarian group Plan International and Learn Work Develop (LWD), a non-profit organisation implementing the scheme

The initiative seeks to challenge gender stereotypes and empower young Rwandan women through sport.

“What makes Olivia unique is her determination,” says her coach Niyonsaba Elidad.

“She knows what she wants. Every time we train, she gives it her all.”

Women’s cycling in Rwanda is still in its infancy and often marginalised in a sport long viewed as the domain of men.

“In the past, if a girl was seen riding a bike, people would ridicule her. They would say, ‘You are not a boy, why are you cycling?'” explains Mbabazi Fillette, programs and partnership manager at LWD.

“If they saw a young girl getting a bike and riding it, it would be an abomination.

“We’re proving that girls can not only ride, but also compete at the highest level.”

At the Bugesera Cycling Centre, Maniragena has gained more than racing skills. She has also mastered bike mechanics.

“I can dismantle and reassemble a bike in five minutes,” she says. “It’s something I truly value. It brought back the hope I had lost in my life.”

While other members of the 30-strong team have specialised in things like welding, tailoring and communications, Maniragena’s trade has become her financial lifeline.

“What keeps me going is knowing I can earn an income.

“On a good day in the bike shop, I make about $7. When I race, I can earn even more.”

But financial barriers continue to pose a significant challenge.

A decent racing bike costs between 60,000 and 150,000 Rwandan francs (approximately $42 to $104) – an unattainable amount for many from low-income backgrounds.

Despite these obstacles, the passion for cycling among Rwanda’s youth continues to grow.

In just 15 months Maniragena has transformed from a novice rider to a local champion, winning races in the Rwanda Youth Racing Cup.

Her rapid rise has sparked hopes that she could one day stand on the podium in national colours.

“I see Olivia as a future champion,” her coach Elidad predicts with pride.

“She has the talent to compete at an elite level. She just needs the right opportunities and support.”

If Maniragena and her team-mates at the Road World Championships miss out on the start list for the U23 race, they will instead take part in a social race linked to the event.

“I see growth. I can’t wait to see more women competing,” says Fillette with excitement.

“This is a huge opportunity for my country.”

As Rwanda prepares to act as host, international tensions have eased on its border following a declaration of principles between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel group.

The deal, signed in Qatar last month, aims to stop hostilities in eastern Congo.

The conflict has strained relations between the DRC and Rwanda, with the latter denying accusations, including from the United Nations, that it backs M23.

In hosting the Road World Championships, alongside other major events, some critics have accused Rwanda of ‘sportswashing’ – the process of investing in sport to enhance a nation’s global image.

The UCI has vehemently denied such claims when asked about its decision to choose Rwanda, pointing to the country’s strong cycling tradition, with the gruelling Tour du Rwanda held annually since 1988.

Those running the Bikes for Future project, which was launched to capitalise on Rwanda’s role as the first African nation to host the Road World Championships, agree there are greater benefits.

“There’s now a stronger belief that bicycles can change lives,” says Solomon Tesfamariam, Plan International’s director for Rwanda.

“Our focus is to engage and support more girls, and cycling is becoming increasingly popular among women.”

For Maniragena and her team-mates, it has certainly created fresh ambitions.

“We want to be champions,” she says.

“One day, we want to race among the world’s best.”

In an interview with Accra-based broadcast station, Mothers TV on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the MP shared that he was on board the same helicopter about a week and a half before the fatal crash.

He noted that he was concerned throughout his journey in the helicopter, especially after hearing the sound of the engine when it took off from Burma Camp in Accra.

The Kwahu Afram Plains stated that the helicopter also produced excessive vibrations, which raised serious safety concerns.

He said:

“It was about one and a half weeks ago. It was the same helicopter, the Z-9. Let me be very realistic here, I was really concerned when the helicopter took off from Burma Camp. I was concerned because of the sound I was hearing from the engine.”

“Anyone who has flown in a helicopter will know whether the engine is new, serviced or unserviced when they listen to its sound. In my personal view, I was not hearing the right sound. The engine did not sound well.”

“You could feel a lot of vibration from it. We know helicopters produce vibrations, but this one exceeded expectations, for you to know that there was something wrong somewhere.”

Kpeli Worlase noted that he failed to report his concerns about the Ghana Armed Forces’ Z-9 helicopter since he flew with expert engineers and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga.

The Kwahu Afram Plains MP also recounted the previous concerns the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, raised about the current state of the Ghana Armed Forces’ aircraft, while speaking on the floor of parliament a few months ago.

GRTCC Suspends 20% Transport Fare Hike

0

A public transport station

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended the planned 20 percent increase in public transport fares following a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The decision to halt the fare adjustment comes amid widespread public outcry and concerns about the lack of adequate stakeholder consultations ahead of the proposed implementation.

On Tuesday, August 5, Road Transport Operators announced that fares for public transport services, including shared taxis, intra-city minibuses (trotros), intercity coaches, and haulage vehicles, would be increased by 20 percent effective Friday, August 8, 2025.

The GRTCC said the adjustment was necessitated by rising operational costs, including the introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy, increased maintenance costs due to poor road conditions, and what they described as a lack of corresponding price reductions in spare parts and services after a 15 percent fare reduction was implemented on May 21, 2025.

However, the move sparked criticism from passengers and civil society groups who argued that the fare hike lacked transparency and failed to consider the economic strain on commuters.

In a press release issued on Thursday, August 7, the GRTCC announced the suspension of the proposed hike, citing the need for broader consultation and consensus-building.

“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision,” the statement read.

The Council further directed all operators to continue implementing the existing 15% fare reduction, which has been in effect since May 24, 2025, as part of a government-led intervention to ease the cost of living.

Businessman and social commentator Isaac Fayose believes that if the pilot of the plane that singer KWAM1 had an issue with on Tuesday belonged to the Igbo ethnic group, it would have been speculated that he or she was sent by politician Peter Obi.

In a video shared on Instagram, Fayose stated that this KWAM 1 issue reflects the severity of the country’s current situation. He pointed out that younger singers have all ‘acquired’ their own private jets, and if KWAM1 feels he is too important to adhere to the rules of commercial flights, he should invest in purchasing his own private jet.

‘Tall Tree Caused Military Helicopter Crash’

IT HAS emerged that a tall tree in a forest at Sikaman Brofoyedru near Obuasi is responsible for the crash of a military helicopter, which was carrying top government officials to Obuasi for a national assignment last Wednesday morning.

According to some farmers at Sikaman Brofoyedru, who claimed to have witnessed the unfortunate accident, the helicopter was flying very low so it initially collided with a tall tree in the forest before crashing into a mountain, sparking a heavy blast afterwards.

The farmers disclosed that the explosion which followed the crash was so strong that it sent shivers down their spine.

“We were in our farms working as usual on Wednesday morning when we saw the helicopter flying very low. We initially thought it was one of the helicopters of the Anglogold which was heading towards Obuasi to carry gold.

“Suddenly, we realised that the helicopter, which was flying very low, had hit a tall tree and crashed into a mountain nearby, resulting in a heavy blast. The entire area was then in flames,” one of the farmers disclosed.

The farmer, who refused to mention his name for obvious reasons, said they decided to rush to the accident scene to help save anyone who may have survived, but when they reached there, they saw charred bodies.

“We decided to rush there and offer a helping hand to survivors, but we only witnessed a gory spectacle of burnt bodies all over the place. The fire was so dangerous that we couldn’t go near the helicopter, which was in flames,” he disclosed.

The crash claimed the lives of eight people onboard the helicopter, including Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, who were heading towards Obuasi to attend the launch of a Community Mining Programme.

Meanwhile, top National Democratic Congress (NDC) members in Kumasi, led by Augustus Nana Kwasi, the Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman and Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi aka Zuba, the Kumasi Mayor, rushed to the accident scene.

The NDC executives and the Kumasi Mayor were seen expressing sadness over the death of the government officials and the crew members.

Appiah Adomako Writes: Why government must take interest in who acquires Shoprite stores in Ghana

0

Shoprite, Africa’s largest grocery retailer, has announced its exit from the Ghanaian market after receiving a binding offer for seven of its trading stores and one warehouse. While this may appear to be a routine business transaction, it carries significant implications for competition, consumer welfare, and the structure of Ghana’s retail sector. This is why the government must take a keen interest in who acquires Shoprite’s assets.

Ghana lacks a competition or antitrust law, despite having a draft since 2007. This means that the sale and acquisition of Shoprite’s operations will not be reviewed by any local authority to assess potential harm to competition or consumers. Unlike regulated sectors such as banking and telecommunications, where mergers undergo scrutiny, the retail market has no such safeguards. In many countries, regulators examine mergers to prevent monopolies and protect consumers. In Ghana, the absence of oversight makes it crucial for the Ministry of Trade and Industry to evaluate this transaction from a competition policy perspective.

Why This Transaction Matters to Consumers and Producers?

The buyer’s identity is crucial because it could reshape market dynamics. If the acquiring company is already a dominant player, such as Melcom, the acquisition could significantly increase market concentration.

Firstly, such a merger could result in increased market concentration. When GAME exited the Ghanaian market in 2022, Melcom replaced GAME in malls across Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. This strengthened Melcom’s presence and market share. If Melcom were to acquire Shoprite’s stores, its dominance in the retail space would grow even stronger, reducing competition and consumer choice.

Secondly, there is a risk of monopoly. Melcom is rapidly expanding across Ghana. Should it acquire Shoprite’s assets, it could become so dominant that no other retailer would be able to compete effectively. Without competition, innovation slows down, prices tend to rise, and consumers are left with fewer options.

Thirdly, such a merger could impact consumer welfare. A company with a large market share can use its market power to sustain prices above competitive levels. This would harm consumers, who may end up paying more for groceries and other retail products. While it is true that alternatives to the retail shops smaller provision shops, mini-marts, and traditional markets, the future of retail is shifting toward shopping malls and networked retail networks. Dominance in this segment could have long-lasting effects on consumer welfare and may be difficult to dismantle.

Fourthly, retail firms with market power can decide to squeeze suppliers. Market dominance does not only affect consumers. Suppliers also face challenges when dealing with a powerful retailer. A dominant company can exert what economists call “buyer power” or monopsony, dictating terms and prices to suppliers. This can force suppliers to accept unfavorable terms or risk losing access to the market altogether.

Additionally, if the market becomes concentrated by a dominant player, it could lead to barriers to entry in the future. If this acquisition goes unchecked, Ghana may soon have to contend with a retail giant whose size and influence make it nearly impossible for new competitors to enter the market. This could create long-term inefficiencies and reduce the vibrancy of the sector. Ghanaians have already experienced the consequences of market dominance in other sectors. MultiChoice’s control of premium sports content in the pay-TV market and MTN’s designation as a Significant Market Power (SMP) operator in telecommunications have contributed to less competitive markets and higher prices. Without regulatory oversight, the retail sector risks heading in the same direction.

Lessons from Namibia and Malawi

Shoprite’s exit also affects Malawi, where the sale is subject to approval by the Malawi Competition and Fair Trading Commission and the Reserve Bank of Malawi. Their competition laws require that such transactions be assessed to ensure they do not harm competition or consumers. This is standard in countries with strong antitrust frameworks.

Internationally, competition regulators have acted decisively when mergers threaten markets. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority blocked the 2019 merger between Sainsbury’s and Asda, arguing it would lead to higher prices and reduced quality. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice have challenged major deals, including the attempted acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft and the merger of American Airlines with US Airways.

African regulators have also intervened. In South Africa, the Competition Commission blocked the 2017 merger between Mediclinic International and Matlosana Medical Health Services, citing reduced competition in healthcare. In Kenya, the Competition Authority blocked the 2016 merger between outdoor advertising firms Magnate Ventures and Adsite, as it would have created a dominant player and restricted opportunities for smaller competitors.

Why the Government Must Act?

The sale of Shoprite’s operations is not merely a private matter between buyer and seller. It has broader implications for competition, consumer welfare, and the future of Ghana’s retail sector. Even without a competition law, the government can still act by reviewing the transaction through the Ministry of Trade and Industry or the Attorney General’s office. This would ensure the acquisition does not create a monopoly or harm suppliers and consumers.

The Urgent Need for Competition and Consumer Protection Laws

This case underscores the urgent need for Ghana to pass the Competition and Fair Trade Practices Bill, along with a strong consumer protection law. These laws are essential to ensure markets function efficiently, protect consumers, and promote fair competition.

Recent experiences in the pay-TV and telecom markets show how unchecked dominance harms consumers and stifles competition. The retail sector must not be allowed to go down the same road.

Concerns are growing over the safety of a homeless individual who has set up a makeshift living area on the busy Pokuase Interchange, a major intersection in the capital.

This situation, for many, poses significant risks to the individual and motorists navigating this busy thoroughfare, as noted in a post on X by SikaOfficial on August 8, 2025.

The caption accompanying the post stated, “A homeless person has dangerously set up his makeshift sleep area on the Pokuase Interchange.”

While traffic flow has not yet been significantly affected, the potential for accidents remains a major concern for many road users, the post said.

This tragedy has shaken the soul of our country

Oswal Investments Group, a local road construction company, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, including two ministers of state, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Executive Chairman of Oswal Investments, Mr. Humphrey Williams, extended heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the bereaved families, and the entire nation.

“This tragedy has shaken the soul of our country. We have lost not just public officials, but visionary leaders who were committed to the future of Ghana. Their service, sacrifice, and dedication will never be forgotten,” Humphrey Williams said.

Mr. Williams described the incident as a “national heartbreak,” adding that “Ghana is in mourning, and we stand united with the families of the departed in this time of unspeakable grief.”

He praised the fallen officials for their commitment and dedication to national service.

“Their deaths must reignite our collective resolve to carry forward the mission they believed in,” he said.

Five government officials and three Airforce pilots died in the helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The deceased included Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna.

Others are former Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong and former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye.

The military crew onboard were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Politicians and football heavyweights who have kicked against Kurt Okraku’s third-term bid

0

The Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) plan to extend its presidential term limit from two to three has ignited fierce resistance from politicians, ex-football chiefs, and industry figures.

If accepted at Congress on August 12, 2025, the amendment will allow current president Kurt Okraku, now in his second term, to remain in office beyond the current eight-year cap.

At the heart of the controversy is the GFA’s decision, following FIFA’s approval, to align its term limit with the world governing body and CAF.

Supporters of the GFA regime argue it would ensure stability and continuity, while critics see it as a dangerous step towards concentrating power in one office.

The debate has reopened old wounds from the Nyantakyi era, when a similar extension ended in scandal.

For many opponents, the issue is not just about Okraku’s ambitions but about protecting the integrity and democratic values of Ghanaian football.

Ghanaians don’t have the power to stop Kurt Okraku’s third term, only Congress can – Eric Alagidede

As such, critics have framed the proposal as a legal and ethical threat to the Association’s governance, a risky precedent that could concentrate power, and a misplaced priority while the league struggles for sponsors and credibility.

Below are four individuals who have mounted strong opposition against the new proposal of three terms.

Vincent Ekow Assafuah — Ranking Member, Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee

Assafuah warned that the amendment runs counter to the GFA’s own rules and the spirit of the 2019 reforms.

He pointed to the statute that limits presidents to two terms and argued that changing it for an individual would damage institutional integrity.

“The statutes exist to protect the Association from excessive concentration of power and to preserve institutional integrity. To disregard this provision, or seek its amendment to favour the ambitions of any individual, would contradict the foundational principles upon which the restructured GFA was built,” he said.

Assafuah further revealed how the association is not a private entity but one that is bent on serving the country.

“The GFA is not a vehicle for personal elevation. It is a national institution with responsibilities to its members, the Ghanaian football community, and global football governance standards,” he added.

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho‑Tamakloe — Former GFA Chairman

Nyaho‑Tamakloe warned that history could repeat itself if the GFA relaxes its limits, recalling the circumstances that preceded previous instability at the Association.

He made said that constitutional tinkering to prolong leadership has dangerous consequences.

“I warn that history has repeated itself in several instances in this country, and we don’t seem to take note of that,” Tamakloe told Joy Sports.

“If we are not careful, this can create a big problem, because citing the downfall of the former GFA boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi, my very good friend, I attribute it as this particular thing he himself wanted to do would have an impact on his downfall.”

“Now, to me, anyone who wants to stay in power perpetually, especially by twisting the constitution to suit their interests, is a danger to the organization and the society.”

Kojo Addae‑Mensah — Databank CEO (and former GFA search‑committee member)

Addae‑Mensah urged restraint and a focus on fixing the league rather than changing rules to extend tenure.

He warned that leadership renewal is essential for fairness and the Association’s health, and that rewriting statutes to suit a sitting president would set a dangerous precedent.

“Kurt should not run for a third term and allow his successor do so, should the GFA Congress approve the amendment. Kurt came into office knowing he has only two terms to serve,” he said.

George Afriyie — Former GFA Vice‑President

Afriyie also in an interview with Asempa FM, attacked the timing and priorities of the move, arguing that the domestic league is in such a poor shape that extending presidential tenure is the last thing the GFA should be pursuing.

“You are playing a league that’s a sakora league, it’s difficult for your number one product, which is the Ghana Premier League to attract partnership,” he said.

Anim Addo — Former GFA Executive Council Member

Addo during an interview with Sporty FM, condemned the amendment as unpatriotic and highlighted administrative dysfunction as evidence of poor leadership.

Anim Addo complains about ‘mafia tactics’ ahead GFA Congress

“I sent an email to the GFA on whether I will appear at Congress to vote and it bounced back that the email was full. How can that be? Anyone who thinks extending the GFA president’s term limit to three is a good thing does not love Ghana,” he said.

Congo unveils new government amid eastern security crisis

0

President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday carried out a government reshuffle as the Central African country faces a mounting security crisis in its eastern region.

Presidential spokesperson Tina Salama said on national television that the new cabinet was formed after nationwide consultations to ensure efficiency, credibility, as well as political, geographical and sociocultural balance through “an inclusive government.”

Although initially announced as streamlined, the new government comprises 54 members — only one fewer than the previous cabinet formed in May 2024 — including six vice prime ministers, 12 state ministers, 24 ministers, five ministerial delegates and six vice ministers. Judith Suminwa Tuluka remains prime minister.

Opposition figure Adolphe Muzito, a former prime minister under ex-president Joseph Kabila, has joined the new inclusive government as vice prime minister in charge of the budget.

In late February, DRC President Felix Tshisekedi announced sweeping political changes, including plans to establish a “government of national unity” to prevent the security crisis in the country’s eastern part from escalating into a broader regional conflict.

Since then, Desire-Cashmir Kolongele Eberande, the DRC president’s special security advisor, has led consultations involving the Sacred Union — the ruling parliamentary coalition — opposition parties within and outside parliament, civil society, and prominent figures, including former presidential candidates.

The eastern DRC has been troubled by decades of insecurity fuelled by ethnic tensions, local militias, and foreign rebel groups operating across porous borders, especially the March 23 Movement rebel group, which re-emerged in late 2021.

Pope Leo XIV has paid tribute to the deaths of two ministers, senior government officials, and military personnel who perished in a tragic helicopter crash in Ghana on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In a telegram signed by the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and addressed to the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Matthew K. Gyamfi, the Holy Father conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved.

“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV sends his condolences upon the deaths of the ministers, government officials, and all who perished in the military helicopter crash,” the message read.

“Entrusting the souls of the deceased to the mercy of Almighty God, and with prayers for those who mourn their loss, especially their families, the Holy Father assures the nation of his spiritual closeness at this difficult time.”

The helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, went down in a heavily forested area of the Ashanti Region. Among those on board were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The officials were en route to Obuasi for an assignment linked to combating illegal mining.

There were no survivors.

CAF Rankings 2025: Dreams FC and Medeama represent Ghana, Kotoko and Hearts missing

0

The 2025 CAF Clubs’ Ranking has been released, with only two Ghanaian clubs making the prestigious continental list — Dreams FC and Medeama SC — while giants Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are conspicuously absent.

Dreams FC, who finished in the semifinals of the 23/24 CAF Confederation Cup, are ranked 26th with 12 points, making them Ghana’s top-placed club.

Medeama SC, who progressed to the group stage in the 23/24 CAF Champions League, sit in joint 51st position with 4 points.

North and Southern African sides dominate the rankings, led by Egypt’s Al Ahly (78 points), South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns (62 points), and Tunisia’s Esperance Sportive de Tunis (57 points).

The absence of Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak — historically Ghana’s most decorated clubs — highlights their struggles in recent years to make an impact in African competitions.

Both have failed to progress deep enough in CAF tournaments to earn ranking points, a stark contrast to their illustrious pasts.

I don’t care about the backlash

Sharon Dede Padiki with the painting she drew at the event Sharon Dede Padiki with the painting she drew at the event

Sharon Dede Padiki, CEO of Padiki Art Gallery, has responded to the backlash over her ‘unconventional’ painting of late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, created during his candlelight vigil at Independence Square.

The artwork, a cartoon caricature, sparked mixed reactions online, with some critics labelling it disrespectful while others applauded its creativity.

However, in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, Padiki explained that her style of painting was intentional and was a way to sedate the grieving crowd of fans and supporters who were gathered at the venue.

“Seeing the crowd multiplying, I wanted to calm them down instead of adding to their sorrows. I chose a caricature (an exaggerated and humorous art) to lighten the mood.

“I’m not a portrait painter; I work in abstracts. Even if I hadn’t done this, I’d have painted a symbolic piece about his life, not realism,” she said during a phone call interaction with Isaac Dadzie.

Kumasi candlelight vigil for Daddy Lumba postponed indefinitely

In response to the criticism, she said she remains unshaken, stating that art is intended to spark conversations and that this incident rather highlighted the ignorance towards art by Ghanaians.

“I don’t have a problem, and I don’t care, if an art piece is not criticised, it is not a masterpiece. Everyone has the freedom to express their opinions. We’re in a democratic society. There is freedom.

“It’s good; I love it, and I love educating people on it because it highlights their ignorance in art, and a lot of education is needed on art in Ghana, which I’m going to address seriously,” she said.

The painting, presented to Lumba’s family as a tribute, became a viral topic garnering thousands of reactions online.

Known for her bold projects, including a Guinness World Record attempt for a 168-hour paint-a-thon, Padiki continues to champion artistic freedom and female empowerment in Ghana’s art scene.

The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and the Department of Economics have officially introduced the first Bank of Ghana (BoG) Chair in Finance and Economics to enable the University engage closely with the Bank to understand its operations, and conduct research while bridging the gap between economics and finance for development among others.

Speaking at the launch, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama said apart from improving knowledge development, the partnership will also deepen the relationship between academia and the central bank.

The Governor also said that the relationship between the two Institutions was a necessary decision taken by the bank due to the role played by academia in shaping the financial architecture of the country.

He said, “Policy without intellect is blind, and theory without policy is sterile. The partnership between the University of Ghana and the Bank of Ghana, therefore, is not just ceremonial. It is foundational”.

“This Chair will serve as a catalyst for cutting-edge research in inflation dynamics, exchange rate management, digital finance, regulation of virtual assets, and the evolving contours of financial stability,” he said.

He said the chair, Prof. Imhotep Y. P. Alagidede, will serve as a ‘mentoring, inspiration, and critical thought for students across Ghana and Africa’ with a commitment to supporting future economists and policymakers.

The Governor noted that the Bank of Ghana has over the years forged meaningful academic linkages that provided internships for students, guest lectures by central bank officials, research support, and co-hosting policy dialogues which have informed both classroom instruction and macroeconomic policymaking.

Dr. Asiama stated that BoG will launch joint research initiatives in areas such as inflation targeting, exchange rate management, digital finance, regulation of virtual assets, and monetary policy transmission as well as create policy labs and data partnerships that allow faculty and students to work with real-time datasets, contributing meaningfully to the design and calibration of policy.

“The research will also support curriculum development that strengthens training in central banking, risk governance, and macroprudential policy, ensuring that Ghana’s universities become the cradle of future-ready economists and policymakers. This will contribute meaningfully to the design and caliberation of policy,” he stated.

The Governor also announced a new initiative in collaboration with the Chair dubbed, the “Governor’s Future Leaders Fellowship” to identify high-performing university graduates with exceptional potential in economics, finance, and public policy.

He added that the young leaders will be offered structured pathways to top global institutions, through scholarships, internships, and policy immersion opportunities.

Agyepong Campaign Urges Bawumia to Step Aside in NPP Leadership Shakeup

Paul Abdul Rahman Issah Dowuona, spokesperson for presidential hopeful Kwabena Agyepong, has openly called for former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to exit Ghana’s political arena, declaring his tenure “complete” after 16 years of service to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The Former Vice President has done his best for the party,” Dowuona stated during a Thursday interview on Channel One Newsroom. “We think he should go and rest. Ghanaians are still assessing his stewardship—evident in the previous election.” He further suggested Bawumia’s legacy requires distance for proper evaluation: “When Ing. Agyepong wins power, after eight years, Ghanaians will have finished assessing him.”

The remarks followed Agyepong’s formal collection of NPP nomination forms on Wednesday, cementing his bid for the party’s 2028 flagbearership. Dowuona doubled down on Agyepong’s credentials, praising his “unmatched integrity, vision, and deep understanding of Ghana’s democratic principles” a direct contrast to Bawumia’s record.

The public dismissal signals escalating friction within the opposition NPP as it navigates post-election renewal. While Bawumia remains influential, Agyepong’s camp appears intent on framing him as a figure of the past. With President Mahama’s NDC government midway through its term, the NPP’s internal contest is rapidly evolving from debate to confrontation.

As Dowuona’s rhetoric sharpens, the party faces a delicate balancing act: unifying behind a credible challenger while managing generational tensions. For now, Bawumia has yet to respond—but the battle lines are drawn.

Ghana Actor Oboy Siki Admits Pursuing Fame for Sexual Access to Young Women

Veteran Kumawood actor Oboy Siki has sparked outrage after admitting he joined Ghana’s movie industry primarily to “gain easy access” to young women.

In a recent interview, the controversial figure stated his acting career enabled him to sleep with “several young ladies” he otherwise couldn’t reach.

“I pursued acting to get what I want,” Siki declared. “People in music sleep with women too. It’s because of women that I chose movies.” He dismissed established actresses like Nana Ama McBrown, Emelia Brobbey, and Vivian Jill as “old women,” claiming they didn’t meet his standards.

The actor, who previously predicted his own death in 2024, openly discouraged youth from joining the industry: “I won’t encourage people—they’ll be corrupted by our bad ways and start womanizing.” His remarks drew swift condemnation from colleagues and social media users, who labeled the admissions predatory and damaging to Ghana’s film sector.

Industry veterans emphasized such behavior contradicts professional ethics. “This isn’t representation—it’s exploitation,” stated filmmaker Akosua Adoma. The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about power imbalances in entertainment, with advocates urging stronger safeguards for young talents.

Siki remains unapologetic: “I’m okay with my lifestyle.” But as Ghana’s creative community reckons with his claims, the fallout may outlast his fading stardom.

Veteran actor Clement Bonney, popularly known as Mr. Beautiful, has been officially appointed as a member of the Creative Arts Agency’s new governing board.

The announcement was made on Monday, August 5, 2025, during the formal introduction of the 13-member board in Accra.

Other members of the board include well-known opera singer and former journalist Kokui Selormey, and award-winning actress Akorfa Edjeani Asiedu.

Photos from the ceremony showed Mr. Beautiful and his fellow board members with the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie. He was also seen signing his contract and taking his oath of office.

Mr. Beautiful’s appointment comes at a time when the board is expected to help shape policies and provide support for Ghana’s creative industry.

Known for his strong support for former President John Mahama and the NDC, his inclusion has sparked public discussion about the role of politics in the arts sector.

The Creative Arts Agency, created under the Creative Arts Industry Act, 2020 (Act 1048), is responsible for promoting artistic development, preserving culture, and supporting local and international partnerships in Ghana’s creative space.

CIB Ghana Leads Monetary Policy, Banking Reform Dialogue

The Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB Ghana) has convened a high-level policy seminar under the theme, “Monetary Policy in Action: How MPC Decisions Shape Ghana’s Economy and Financial Sector,” to examine the practical implications of monetary policy decisions on lending, inflation, and financial sector development.

In his welcome address, President of CIB Ghana, Benjamin Amenumey, reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to advancing professional discourse on national economic policy.

“Our mandate requires that we promote ethical and professional conduct while advancing the development of the banking profession. Fostering dialogue on monetary policy is a national duty,” he stated.

Chief Executive Officer of CIB Ghana, Robert Dzato, shared key findings from a recent study conducted by the Institute. The research, which surveyed senior banking executives and other officials, revealed widespread stakeholder alignment with the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) recent policy stance. “Over 85 percent of respondents had anticipated the latest rate cut. Stakeholders are looking for greater alignment between monetary policy actions and economic growth. We also heard concerns about liquidity constraints, credit risk, and volatility in funding costs,” he added.

The event’s keynote address was delivered by Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of the BoG, who described the current disinflation process as “real, sustained, and progressive,” supported by coordinated, data-driven measures between the central bank and the Ministry of Finance. Inflation fell from 25.8 percent in March to 13.7 percent in June 2025, while the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR) declined from 32.5 percent in January to 27.7 percent in July. Dr. Asiama cited the cedi’s appreciation, over 40 percent year-to-date, as a key factor in lowering imported inflation and improving purchasing power.

He cautioned, however, that banks must prepare for the evolving financial landscape. “Banks have to start assessing themselves, especially their credit infrastructure. We will soon come out with a notice on credit risk for banks, and it is all in line with what we see coming,” he said.

The Governor encouraged commercial banks to transition from passive investment in government securities to core credit intermediation. “The era of high interest rates and passive investment is ending. Banks must now reimagine their business models, focusing on SMEs, agriculture, and green finance,” he added.

A panel discussion followed, featuring insights from key industry stakeholders.

Professor Festus Ebo Turkson, an external member of the MPC, explained the decision-making framework behind the recent rate cut. “It is data driven. Every decision we make reflects a rigorous review of economic conditions and risks,” he stated.

Dr. Humphrey Ayim Dake, President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), expressed support for the changing interest rate environment. “We welcome the imminent low interest rate regime and expect to see more banking—that is, credit flowing into real businesses,” he said.

Proper Records Cut Taxes, Not Raise Them, Ghana SMEs Told

A leading tax expert has challenged a widespread fear among Ghana’s small business owners: that keeping accurate financial records inevitably leads to higher tax bills.

Gilbert Yirenkyi Addo, Associate Director for Business Tax at Deloitte Ghana, called this belief a damaging misconception.

Speaking at an SME forum hosted by Access Bank Ghana in partnership with Deloitte, Addo stressed that taxes are levied on profit, not total revenue. “Taxes are calculated on profit revenue minus allowable business expenses,” he explained. “Proper record-keeping actually helps identify those legitimate deductions, potentially lowering your tax obligation.” He argued that hiding information is counterproductive and closer to illegality than sound business practice.

Addo framed tax compliance as part of a business’s social contract with the nation. While contributing to development, he noted, the state also recognizes operational costs. Robust records enable firms to claim tax incentives and reliefs, like capital allowances for asset purchases. Without purchase proof, authorities must estimate liabilities, often to the business’s disadvantage.

The expert urged SMEs to embrace transparency. “Keeping records isn’t just for tax. It empowers your growth and financial planning,” Addo advised. The session, themed “SME Financial Empowerment: An Imperative for Business Resilience,” aimed to strengthen financial management skills in a competitive market. Candlelight for Daddy Lumba put on hold Candlelight for Daddy Lumba put on hold

The candlelight vigil that was supposed to take place in Kumasi, Heros park, in honour of the late Ghanaian music legend, Daddy Lumba, has been put on hold indefinitely.

The vigil was originally scheduled for August 9, 2025.

The change in schedule was announced in an official statement released by the Creative Arts Agency on August 7, 2025.

The statement was signed by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Agency, Gideon Aryeequaye.

According to the Creative Arts Agency, the postponement is out of respect for the eight individuals who sadly lost their lives in a tragic military helicopter crash earlier in the week.

The Agency said it would not be appropriate to go ahead with the Kumasi vigil during a period of national grief.

This decision also follows the government’s declaration of three days of national mourning by President John Dramani Mahama.

The mourning period runs from August 7, to August 9, 2025. During this time, the country is expected to honour the memory of those who died in the accident.

The Kumasi vigil was to follow the successful candlelight ceremony held at the Independence Square in Accra on August 2, 2025.

The candlelight vigil in Accra saw in attendance fans, celebrities, and public figures coming together to celebrate the legacy of Daddy Lumba, who was regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians.

Daddy Lumba, aged 60, passed away on July 26, 2025, after a short illness.

The Creative Arts Agency also shared their condolences to the families of the helicopter crash victims.

They shared their sympathy with the affected families and the entire country, acknowledging the pain the nation is going through at this time.

Meanwhile, watch as Pat Thomas shares memories of the late Daddy Lumba:
