The stay of execution application filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to suspend a High Court order directing the Electoral Commission (EC) to finalize the collation of results in Tema Central, Okaikoi Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South has been adjourned indefinitely.
The NDC filed the application after appealing the court’s decision, which ordered the EC to complete the collation process in these constituencies.
However, the application has yet to be heard because the NDC has been unable to serve the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates involved in the case.
When the case was called on Monday, it became clear that the issue of non-service persisted. As a result, the judge decided to adjourn the matter sine die (indefinitely).
The delay in serving the NPP candidates is a significant procedural issue preventing the court from moving forward with the application.
The situation pertains to the unresolved electoral results in these constituencies, with both parties engaged in ongoing legal battles over the legitimacy of the counts and the final declarations of the EC.

President John Dramani Mahama has directed security services to deploy personnel to strategic locations in major markets nationwide as part of efforts to combat the alarming wave of fire outbreaks.
During a visit by traders of the fire-ravaged Kantamanto Market, the President reassured them of the government’s commitment to improving safety measures and addressing their concerns.

“In addition, we are asking the Ghana National Fire Service in the night, because these fires take place in the night, and that is what gives us room for suspicions that there are people who are deliberately doing this.
“In the daytime, you don’t hear that there is a fire anywhere. How the fire can decide that it is only in the night that it ignites and burns is beyond everybody’s imagination.
“We are asking the Fire Service, where there are major markets, to deploy their fire tenders close to the markets in the night,” he said.

Adamus Resources Limited, a mining company in the Western Region, has clarified claims making rounds on various media platforms alleging that a supposed Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the company was allegedly denied access to its Nzema Mine site after they had forcibly and illegally entered the premises of the Company.
The company, in a statement, described the claims as “misinformation” being propagated some individuals namely, Allan Morrison, a New Zealand national; and his associates, Isaac Ackun and Laurent Gaba, a Ghanaian and Togolese respectively.
The statement also alleged that certain media outlets had gone on to amplify the allegations without seeking clarification from the company.
Clarification However, the company, in its statement issued on Tuesday, refuted such claims, insisting that there was no Interim Management Committee (IMC) exerting control over its operations at its Nzema Mine in the Western Region.
“To set the record straight, there is no IMC in place at Adamus Resources Limited,” the statement emphasized.
Court Ruling The company explained that a court ruling delivered on December 12, 2024, by Her Ladyship Justice Jennifer Abena Dadzie of the Court of Appeal (acting as an additional High Court Judge) dismissed any claims of an IMC’s existence, stating that all interlocutory applications and orders, including an order dated July 27, 2023, have lapsed and are void.
“This declaration was made when the High Court delivered its ruling on the application of lawyers of Adamus Resources Limited and Nguvu Mining Ltd to withdraw the suit,” the company noted.
The company also added that a prior ruling by another High Court judge, Justice Loddoh, had also struck out counterclaims made by Allan Morrison and Adamus Resources Pty Ltd, and went on to question the motives behind the false reports, which it claimed were damaging its reputation and operations.
Caution Adamus Resources Limited urged media outlets to verify facts before publishing reports and advised the public to disregard any claims of an IMC’s authority over the company.
“We strongly advise the public to disregard any assertions or reports regarding a supposed Interim Management Committee exerting control over Adamus Resources Limited. Any official communication from the company shall be from the communications bureau and on the letterhead of Adamus Resources Limited,” the statement stressed.
The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, has unreservedly apologized to the people of Ghana for the unfair treatment they received from the party.
He acknowledged that when the NPP came to power, they disappointed many Ghanaians, which affected their support leading into the 2024 elections.
According to him, the New Patriotic Party, at some point, forgot how they came to power and failed to engage and carry along their support base, resulting in a hard lesson for the party.
“I want to use this opportunity to apologize on behalf of the President, my Chairman, and all other executives of the party, to the people in our strongholds who were disappointed because we did not deliver the needed infrastructure. To the individuals who sold their properties to support us in 2016 but whom we failed to involve, to the lawyers who served as polling station agents but were forgotten, to the contractors we did not pay, and to all the young people who supported the party in 2016 and 2020 with the hope of gaining opportunities—we are deeply sorry,” he said.
“Politics goes beyond projects; a key aspect is human management—the way you relate to people and make them feel understood and valued. That is where we failed as a government. We failed to carry our people along.”
He continued: “At some point, we forgot how we even came to power. We need to reconcile with our God, our Lord, so that He remembers us. Even the Bible says that if you seek the face of the Lord, He will forgive you. I firmly believe the battle is still the Lord’s, and whatever has happened, we will recover. By 2028, we will come back stronger,” he stated in an interview with Asempa FM.

In a bid to support the Muslim community in Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to introduce Islamic banking instruments in the country.
According to him, the move is part of his government’s efforts to fulfill promises made to the Muslim community during the election campaign.
At the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving service held at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Muslim community.
He revealed that discussions with the Bank of Ghana are set to begin on how to introduce Islamic banking instruments into the country’s banking and financial system.
This development is expected to provide Muslim individuals and businesses with access to financial services that align with their religious beliefs.
In addition to introducing Islamic banking, President Mahama also pledged to reduce Hajj fares significantly, making the pilgrimage more accessible to the Muslim community.
He said a five-member Hajj task force has been established to negotiate lower travel costs and make arrangements for as many Ghanaian Muslims as possible to undertake the pilgrimage.
Other promises made by the government include granting an extra holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr, protecting the rights of Muslim women to wear the hijab in public, and increasing the number of Arabic teachers.
The NDC government also plans to establish the Soiya Fund, a microcredit scheme to support families in underprivileged Muslim communities.
Dr. Gideon Boako, the Tano North Member of Parliament, has expressed worries that the government of John Dramani Mahama may impose additional taxes in reaction to the elimination of the e-levy and betting tax.
His comment follows remarks made by Finance Minister-Designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who proposed that the Mahama administration eliminate these taxes in its first budget and make up the difference in revenue by cutting spending.
In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Boako expressed concerns regarding the planned measures’ compatibility with the budgetary policies that were agreed upon with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The nation’s financial obligations could be disrupted by such changes, he warned, and increased levies might not be the best way to addressing the revenue gap.
“We don’t want a situation whereby you give with your left hand and you take with your right hand. They have to be explicit. If they are cutting the taxes, they cut the taxes, they don’t introduce any new taxes, you cannot cancel or scrap e-levy, scrap betting tax, and go behind and create another tax to fill the gap.
“If they indeed want to scrap e-levy, betting tax, the COVID-19, the emission taxes, the only other thing they can do in order to match up with the debt service to revenue ratio as enshrined in the IMF programme and captured in the debt sustainability analysis is to have another tax introduced through the back door to make up for the shortfall. Attorney General and Justice Minister-Designate, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has robustly defended the constitutionality of the government’s “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) team, describing it as a vital mechanism to promote accountability and recover stolen state resources.
During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, 2025, Dr Ayine dismissed concerns about the legal basis of the ORAL team, which was established on December 18, 2024, and is chaired by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Dr Ayine acknowledged that ORAL is not a traditional legal body but asserted that its operations align with the values and principles of Ghana’s Constitution. He emphasized the preamble of the 1992 Constitution as the foundational basis for the team’s mandate.
“If you look at the preamble to our Constitution, it is very clear about the fundamental values underpinning it. The value of accountability is one of the principles articulated in the preamble,” he stated.
He explained that ORAL is designed to ensure accountability by targeting politically exposed persons who have misused public office to amass wealth through illegal means.
According to Ayine, the team’s mandate is to recover stolen property, funds, and other intangible resources for the benefit of the state.
“ORAL is supposed to exact accountability from politically exposed persons who misuse their office to loot public resources by way of property, money, and other intangible resources. And so, ORAL is constitutional,” Ayine asserted.
He further clarified that the non-legal nature of the ORAL team does not equate to illegality. “The fact that it is a non-legal body doesn’t mean it is illegal,” he said, adding that the team operates within a framework that respects the rule of law and upholds the rights of individuals under investigation.

The youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has locked up the Savannah Regional Office of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in Damongo.
This action followed reports of alleged attempts to evacuate items from the office on the night of President John Dramani Mahama’s swearing-in.
Abdallah Amidu, a member of the NDC, told Channel One News that they received information about the removal of items and immediately intervened.
“We ordered the youth to halt the evacuation and subsequently reported the matter to the police,” Amidu said.
The situation has raised concerns among residents, with calls for a thorough investigation to determine the motives behind the alleged evacuation attempt.
“On the day of the inauguration of John Mahama, some of our people called us in the thick of the night around 1 AM and reported that some of the members of the NPP had come to the YEA office with motors and vehicles and were packing tailoring machines, hairdryers alongside tools and equipment meant for Masons.
“We reported the case to the police. They came around and advised both parties to look at the place till the new government settled. The fact is, the NDC was trying to protect the state properties.”

Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has voiced his opposition to the potential reintroduction of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Amendment Bill.
On June 27, 2022, Parliament passed an amendment to the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30), introduced by the then-Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame. This amendment formally incorporated plea bargaining into Ghana’s justice system for the first time.
During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, Dr. Ayine criticized the underlying rationale of the bill but committed to thoroughly reviewing its provisions to ensure fairness and effectiveness.
“If the Hon. Member [Patrick Boamah] is seeking to know from me whether, in terms of the scope and substantive content of that bill, it will be introduced as it was, my answer is no. I disagree fundamentally with some of its logic,” Dr. Ayine stated.
He questioned the premise that preliminary applications unnecessarily delay trials, asserting, “The whole idea that preliminary applications are being used to delay conclusions of trials—I disagree fundamentally. I think that lawyers shouldn’t be constrained. If there are technical issues that judges have overlooked, lawyers should bring as many applications as they can.”
Dr. Ayine emphasized the judiciary’s responsibility to handle such applications efficiently to allow substantive trials to proceed. “It is incumbent on the judiciary to dispose of those [applications] in an expeditious manner so that the substantive trial can proceed,” he argued.
He further criticized attempts to use legislation to restrict lawyers from filing preliminary applications, stating, “Some of these applications are fundamental in terms of seeking to do right by the law and procedure under Act 30. So, I disagree fundamentally with it.”
While pledging to reassess the bill critically, Dr. Ayine added, “If it should ever be tabled at all, or if the status quo remains, I will take a look at it. But I have fundamental issues with it.”
Background
On June 27, 2022, Parliament passed a Bill to amend the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure Act), 1960 (Act 30), sponsored by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Mr Godfred Yeboah Dame, to formally incorporate plea bargaining firmly into the administration of justice in Ghana for the first time.
By this amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act, plea bargaining will be permissible in all cases except a few, which have been set out in the Bill passed by Parliament.
Plea bargaining is a process in criminal justice prevailing in other jurisdictions, where accused relinquishes the right to go to full trial in exchange for some other benefit.
For the State, the benefits of plea bargaining, as explained by the Attorney-General to Parliament before the second reading of the Bill earlier in March this year, include a reduction in caseloads of the courts and of prosecutors and saving the State time and money through avoiding long and protracted trials.
Others are decongestion of the prisons due to reduced sentencing, aiding in the reform of the accused and the satisfaction of victims of offences through compensation and restitution in addition to the punishment of the accused.
The Bill awaits Presidential assent before it becomes law.

Accra, Jan 13, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has assured Independent Power Producers (IPPs) of the Government’s support towards generating the needed energy to boost the country’s electricity supply.
He bemoaned the poor governance of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and pledged to take the bull by the horns to reform the energy sector while ensuring the efficient running of the ECG.
“I mean, you can’t run an electricity utility and make 40 per cent commercial and technical losses and continue to think that you have a viable business,” he said.
“And so, if we do it more transparently, more fairly, more competitively, I’m sure that we’ll get an efficient partner to join us in terms of billing and metering so that we can eliminate the huge losses that ECG is making.”
He reiterated the key role IPPs played in the country’s energy sector, which complements government’s efforts in leveraging the capital required to generate the needed power for the country.
The President gave the assurance during a meeting with IPPs in Accra on Monday to discuss the challenges they faced in their operations and how to find solutions through teamwork.
“It was important that we expand the space for independent power producers, because the Government on its own cannot always leverage the capital to put in the generation that is required,” he said.
“And that’s how come many of you signed the PPAs (Power Purchasing Agreements) and set up the thermal plants that we have.”
That was to help increase generation as the Akosombo Hydro Dam alone could not continue to be the sole power provider for the country, forever, he said.
The time had, therefore, come for Ghanaians to complement hydro with thermal, which the Volta River Authority was responsible for.
“But mobilising capital early enough and being able to operationalise thermal plants was becoming a challenge for government and its state-owned power production companies,” President Mahama said.
That was where IPPs such as the Sunon Asogli Power started to get on board, which had since played a critical role in ensuring the nation’s economy got the needed power to continue to make progress.
“However, this has generated some debts, which had accumulated and become difficult to pay back,” he said.
The President noted that his previous administration introduced the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA) with the anticipation that within five years, Ghana would have been able to clear the legacy debt, looking at the revenues to be accrued by the sector.
However, with the change in government in 2017, the ESLA was not used for its intended purpose, President Mahama said, adding: “The revenues of ESLA were mismanaged. And so, what should have gone to pay down a lot of the debt was used for other purposes.”
He said Ghana was opened for business again and called for investment in the sector.

Former musician and newly elected Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has attributed his electoral victory to the wise counsel of Dancehall musician Shatta Wale.
In a video circulating on social media, A Plus shared that he sought advice from Shatta Wale during his campaign, and the musician’s insights played a pivotal role in shaping his approach.
A Plus explained that he had asked Shatta Wale how he managed to maintain his popularity and active fanbase.
The “My Level” hitmaker urged him to emulate Jesus Christ’s approach by focusing on helping people rather than merely making promises.
“And you know what Shatta told me? He said, ‘Go and read about Jesus Christ. I watch your campaign-you just talk. Jesus Christ does not talk. When he goes out, they give people food. He gives them fish and bread and money. Go and help people. When you help people, they will follow and support you. Because the people are suffering and need help,’” he noted.
A Plus said he took the advice to heart and redirected his campaign efforts toward addressing the needs of his constituents.
This included supporting medical expenses and infrastructure projects, which he believes endeared him to the electorate.
He described Shatta Wale as a “very wise man” and reflected on the importance of solving people’s problems to earn their trust.
“I realized that it’s very true. You have to solve the people’s problems. I don’t have the spirit to open the eyes of a blind man. But I can give someone with eye problems money to go to the hospital. And that is exactly what we did. Shatta Wale is a very wise man. Sometimes God hides wisdom where you least expect it,” he added.
A Plus emerged victorious in the Gomoa Central parliamentary election, defeating incumbent MP Naana Eyiah Quansah of the New Patriotic Party by over 2,000 votes.
He garnered 14,277 votes, while Naana Eyiah Quansah received 11,637 votes.
Other candidates collectively secured 10,112 votes.

Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has criticized Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, the former Government Spokesperson for Governance and Security under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for calling for an inquiry into the expenditure of President Mahama’s inauguration.
During a panel discussion on Metro TV on January 10, 2025, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah called for accountability regarding the cost of Mahama’s inauguration.
In response, Joyce Bawah Mogtari took to social media to lambast Dr. Boakye-Danquah, accusing him of remaining silent during President Akufo-Addo’s administration, which she claimed had plunged the country into economic hardship.

The Minister-designate of Energy, John Jinapor, has noted that Ghana’s energy sector debt has increased to $3 billion.
He attributed the rise in debt to ineffective management and the growing interest on existing debt.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, he stated:
“When we were leaving office, the consolidated debt stock was close to $2 billion. Fortunately, I have a document summarizing energy sector debts and lenders as of August 31, 2017. ESLA PLC conducted a full audit of the entire energy sector debts.
“I refer to page 17 of the document. The total energy sector liability at the time was GH₵9.4 billion. They used an exchange rate of 4.4. Using this rate, the debt was approximately $2.1 billion. Let me put on record that, at that time, when the debt was validated, it stood at $2.1 billion.”
Jinapor refuted claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) left an energy sector debt of $5 billion, stating that the official public record, validated by Parliament, pegged the debt at $2.1 billion as of that time.
He further noted that as chair of the energy subcommittee of the transition team, the debt had risen to $2.5 billion as of September 30, 2024. A subsequent reconciliation meeting with the Ministry of Energy, the Energy Commission, and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed that the debt had further escalated to $3 billion.
“As we speak today, the reconciled figure from official sources is $3 billion,” he emphasized.
Jinapor also referenced the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA), which has raised approximately GH₵45 billion over the years, which could be used to service part of the accumulated debts, including interest.
However, he noted that this amount is insufficient to fully address the debt crisis.

President Mahama says youth potential must be realised with better opportunities
Former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury announced his retirement from boxing on January 13, 2025, to focus on other aspects of his life.
In a video posted on social media, the English boxer announced his decision with excitement.
“I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast; I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’ll end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody; see you on the other side,” he said.
Notably, this is not Fury’s first retirement announcement, having previously done so in 2013 and 2017 via social media posts.
Additionally, he announced his retirement in April 2022 after defeating Dillian Whyte but returned to action in December of the same year.
These past instances have led some individuals to question the authenticity of Fury’s current retirement claims.
Fury’s retirement follows his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024, where he aimed to regain his heavyweight world championship title and restore his glory.
The much-anticipated bout between Fury and his compatriot Anthony Joshua is now in doubt.

Maria Sarungi Tsehai has been a vocal critic against President Samia Suluhu Hassan
Prominent Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai who was abducted by armed men in Kenya said she has been released, hours after the incident.
Amnesty International Kenya spokesperson Roland Ebole told the BBC she was “forced” into a vehicle in the capital Nairobi on Sunday afternoon.
But Ms Tsehai was released hours later. She shared a video to her 1.3 million followers on X, appearing visibly shaken and emotional, but said: “I have been saved.”
Ms Tsehai is a staunch critic of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and has accused her government of bringing “tyranny back” to the country.
The Law Society of Kenya president, Faith Odhiambo, said on X they had managed to arrange her release.
“We are sending a warning. We will not allow our country to be used as a haven for picking up individuals,” she said at an evening press conference.
Neither Kenyan nor Tanzanian officials have commented.
Ms Tsehai is a fierce advocate for land rights and freedom of expression in Tanzania.
There have been concerns that Tanzania could be returning to the repressive rule of late President John Magufuli, despite his successor Samia lifting a ban on opposition gatherings and promising to restore competitive politics.
Last year, dozens of opposition were arrested and some were brutally killed. One senior opposition leader died after being doused in acid.
Human Rights Watch described the rise in arrests of opposition activists as a “bad sign” ahead of the 2025 presidential elections, which will take place in October.
Change Tanzania, a movement founded by Ms Tsehai, said in a statement on X they believed she was taken by Tanzanian security agents “operating beyond Tanzania borders to silence government legitimate criticism.”
It added that her “courage in standing up for justice has made her a target”.
In recent months, she had expressed concerns about her safety, reporting an incident where two unidentified men were seen looking for her at her home while she was away.
Kenya has a history of enabling foreign governments to abduct its citizens and carry out forcible extraditions, breaching international law.
Last year, Ugandan opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, was kidnapped in Nairobi by Ugandan security officials and taken across the border for trial by a court martial.
The Ugandan government said Kenya helped them in the operation – but the Kenyan government denied this.
Mr Ebole told the BBC “it might be another repeat” of Mr Besigye’s situation.
Internally, Kenya has been gripped by a wave of disappearances, following last year’s youth-led protests against a series of planned tax rises.
A state-funded rights group saying that over 80 people have been abducted in the last six months.
A few have been released in recent weeks, and there are growing calls for all who have been abducted to be freed.

“Big Akwes has no locus on who is going to do what. He’s always been a sympathizer of the NPP, so if he makes a recent U-turn and joins the campaign for John Mahama, he doesn’t get to antagonize people who have been doing the work since 2016. Myself, Rex, Sadiq, and Ola Michael have been in this bloc since 2016.”
He further cautioned against unnecessary infighting within the industry, warning that such divisions weaken their collective influence.
“For me, it’s too early for us to be fighting over anything. This is why politicians don’t take us seriously. This is why they may overlook us and go for someone who doesn’t appreciate our struggles.”
Touching on the educational credentials of past ministers, Bullgod questioned their actual impact on the creative sector.
“With all their education, what has been their contribution to the sector? It’s about time we prioritize service and dedication.”

A wave of outrage swept through the Atebubu Amantin Municipality in the Bono East Region as drivers took to the streets to protest the growing number of armed robbery attacks on the Atebubu-Amantin road.
The demonstrations, which turned violent, were sparked by the brutal killing of a 75-year-old driver by suspected armed robbers on the night of Friday, January 10.
The tragic incident, which occurred around 10 pm, marked the latest in a series of violent attacks targeting drivers in the area.
Report said many of the drivers, are already frustrated by the constant threat of armed robbery, accused the police of neglecting their duty to ensure their safety.
“We’re going through a lot here in Atebubu,” one driver lamented. “Armed robbers attack us almost every day, even when we’re going to our farms. We don’t understand what the police are doing about it.”
The drivers’ anger boiled over as they stormed the local police station, demanding that the authorities take more effective action to tackle the rising wave of armed robbery in the area.
The protesters damaged a police vehicle, escalating an already volatile situation.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) was also criticized for focusing more on stopping drivers to collect fines than preventing armed robbery attacks.
The Atebubu Amantin Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) secretary, George Mensah, echoed the drivers’ frustration, saying, “These robbers are bold enough to strike in broad daylight. In the last few months, six drivers have been killed”.
“We’ve all agreed that we will not work until something is done to stop this.” The drivers’ strike caused major disruptions, with many passengers left stranded.
The situation was finally defused with the intervention of military personnel, who helped restore order.
However, the tensions remain high, with the drivers insisting that they will not return to work until their safety is guaranteed and the authorities take more effective action to tackle the rising wave of armed robbery in Atebubu Amantin.

Energy Minister-designate, John Jinapor has proposed merging the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Bui Power Authority into a single entity to be known as the “Ghana Power Company.”
According to him, the new government has outlined plans to consolidate key players in Ghana’s energy sector to boost efficiency and ensure strategic management of national energy resources.
Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, he said “We believe that we can merge Bui Power and VRA so that we have something like Ghana Power Company,” he explained.
“This will create a holding company with three specialised subsidiaries for hydro, thermal, and renewable energy under one umbrella.”
Mr Jinapor assured that the government has no intention to privatise these energy assets, which currently generate about 45% of the country’s power supply.
“As a strategic step, you do not put all your energy assets in private hands,” he stated, adding that workers’ input would be considered before finalising any plans.
He further elaborated on the benefits of the consolidation, emphasising increased efficiency through specialisation. “We have hydro experts at VRA and Bui, as well as renewable energy specialists. Why don’t we bring all the renewable people together under one umbrella to maximise their expertise? Similarly, we can streamline operations for hydro and thermal components to reduce losses and improve efficiency,” he said.
Mr Jinapor highlighted that the move aligns with the ministry’s mandate to focus on Ghana’s green energy transition. “Procurement and resource management under a unified structure will bring about efficiency and net gains, while the receivables can be allocated to ensure operational sustainability,” he added.
The proposed merger, according to him, is still at the idea stage and will be refined in consultation with stakeholders to address potential challenges and achieve the desired outcomes.

He noted that revenue generation alone does not provide a clear picture of the fiscal deficit experienced by the government. Therefore, he will only comment on the issue when he has all the facts and figures.
“Mr. Chairman, I heard her talk about revenue, but revenue alone will not give you a picture of the fiscal deficit; you need to compare it with expenditure. I am also aware that between the 30th and the 1st, we saw the Controller paying out about GH¢18 billion, so GH¢18 billion compared to the 400 that you gained, there is a deficit. So, let’s wait for the end-of-year numbers,” Dr. Ato Forson said.
“I don’t want to speculate; I will wait for the end-of-year numbers and then present them if approved to Parliament. Mr. Chairman, I want to learn from the former president, ‘Sika mpɛ dede’. I will wait until then before I make those statements, and when the time comes, I will present the true picture of the economy,” he added.
It would be recalled that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in his address to the nation on October 30, 2024, urged Ghanaians to stop negative speculation about the cedi as it affects how the forex market reacts.
He said, “Fellow Ghanaians, as the French would say, l’argent n’aime pas le bruit, which means money does not like noise, sika mpɛ dede. Where there is chaos, where there is noise, where there is unrest, you will not find money. If you talk down your money, it will go down. If you allow some unidentified person to talk down your money, it will go down.”
Akufo-Addo made this statement while discussing the state of the economy.

The High Court in Accra has adjourned the hearing of the applications filed by four Parliamentary Candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) seeking a Stay of Execution of the order of the Court indefinitely.
This indefinite adjournment of the case was at the instance of lawyers of the NDC after the Court had drawn their attention to the process of none service on the New Patriotic Party side.
On January 4, the High Court presided over by Justice Forson Baah Agyapong ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to collate some outstanding polling station results and declare winners at Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South.
Moments after the orders were given, the NDC side which is the interested Party filed motions to arrest the orders – as it filed a notice of appeal.
Though the applications are yet to be moved, the orders of the High Court have been carried out except for Ablekuma North which has been suspended.
On January 6, 2025, when the case for Stay of Execution was called, the applicants (NPP) in the Mandamus Applications have not been served while the case was adjourned to January 13.
In Court on Monday, January 13, 2025, the case was adjourned indefinitely as there was no proof of service on the NPP side.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the finance minister designate, has pledged to prioritize the development of Ghana’s microeconomy to stabilize the Cedi and generate employment opportunities for citizens.
“When approved [as the Minister of Finance], I’ll dedicate a considerable amount of my attention towards the development of the microeconomy, the real sectors of our economy, to help create jobs and stabilise our currency,” he said.
Dr. Forson made the commitment during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, after being nominated by President John Dramani Mahama for the position of Finance Minister.
He expressed concern over the country’s long-standing focus on the microeconomy and advocated for a shift towards strengthening the microeconomy.
Ghana’s microeconomy is largely defined by a significant informal sector, with many Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) that have a substantial impact on individuals and households.
“Ghana is not out of the woods yet, and there is a lot of work to do. But it is important to understand that you do not only grow the economy from the macro, you grow the economy also from the micro.”
“You do not necessarily create jobs only from the macro, you create jobs from the micro; you do not stabilise the Cedi only from the macro, you stabilise the Cedi also from the micro [economy]. If you want to fix the Cedi and you fail to structural challenges we face as a country, you will fire fight,” he added.
Dr. Ato Forson said that the government would focus on incentivizing the informal sector to encourage their contribution to the country’s development, particularly through Pension Schemes.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing an independent credit office to address debt challenges and to carefully implement measures, including expenditure cuts, that would protect vulnerable groups.
Regarding external support, Dr. Ato Forson highlighted the government’s intention to strengthen its collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to secure more affordable financing options for the country’s development.
Praising the nominee, Madam Abena Osei-Asare, a former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, remarked, “you put us on our toes when we were in Parliament, and I hope to do same constructively.”
She shared some figures, noting that by the end of 2024, the previous government had achieved an economic growth rate of 5.8 percent, up from 2.9 percent in 2023.
Madam Osei Asare also pointed out that inflation had decreased to 23.2 percent in December 2024, down from 28 percent the previous year.
Additionally, she highlighted the banking sector’s growth, with assets rising from GH¢274 billion in 2023 to GH¢376 billion in October 2024.
Madam Osei Asare also noted that private sector credit had increased by 28.8 per cent, compared to a negative 7.5 percent during the same period the previous year.
The country’s primary balance had also shifted from a deficit to a surplus, with the Ghana holding reserves equivalent to 3.5 months of import cover, she noted.

The new Ministry for Sports & Recreation
Among the notable changes is the rebranding of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. This review and re-alignment appear well-reasoned, having incorporated input from technocrats with relevant experience and expertise.
It is a transformation that is both timely and promising, offering an opportunity to leverage sports as a tool for empowering Ghanaian youth and driving sustainable development.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In 2015, the United Nations led the global community in setting 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. A key strategy within this agenda is the deployment of sports as a tool for global peace and development.
Past re-alignments
Since independence, sports in Ghana have been variously aligned with education, science, culture, and youth. The recent alignment of sports with recreation, however, introduces a fresh approach that offers hope and new expectations for the youth.
Sports is predominantly patronised by the youth, making the destinies of youth and sports inextricably linked. For much of the Fourth Republic, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been a dominant feature of this industry.
International best practices
While the United States has no Ministry of Sports, most countries worldwide have government agencies akin to sports ministries. They include France, Turkey, Serbia, Belgium, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Malaysia, Iran, Australia, and Malawi, among others. Many of these countries align sports with youth affairs, following what appears to be the international best practice.
The rationale behind aligning sports with youth is grounded in global principles, including the 37th objective of the UN SDGs, which states:
“Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognise the growing contribution of sport to the realisation of development and peace, in its promotion of tolerance and respect, and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and young people, individuals and communities, as well as to health, education, and social inclusion objectives.”
The correlation between Sports and Youth
Successive governments have designed various programmes and policies towards achieving the UN SDGs. Over 90% of patrons of sporting activities in Ghana are the youth. This youthful demographic reflects the strong correlation between sports and youth development.
Re-alignment of Sports with Recreation
The new alignment of sports with recreation shifts focus from youth to health, well-being, and leisure. Countries like New Zealand, Samoa, and Zimbabwe have similar ministries combining sports with recreation. Ghana’s new Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment will now serve as a hub for youth-centred initiatives.
Health and well-being are critical to national prosperity. During the tenure of two former sports ministers, Messrs Arnold Quainoo and E.T. Mensah, Keep-Fit Clubs were instrumental in promoting fitness among adults and the middle class.
However, the growing prevalence of lifestyle diseases like hypertension and diabetes among younger populations calls for a national fitness initiative.
A designated monthly national fitness day could be a worthy consideration. A national fitness initiative may require the collaboration of the Ministry of Health.
Sports is a big business
Globally, sports has transitioned into a multi-billion-dollar industry, and Ghana is no exception. The new Ministry must acknowledge that sports is no longer a mere recreation but a significant business sector.
In 1993, recognising football’s economic potential, the Ghanaian government partnered with the Ghana Football Association to establish a Professional League Board (PLB), marking a shift towards professionalising premier league football.
Former Sports Minister E.T. Mensah’s mantra, “Sports is a big business,” remains as relevant today as it was over three decades ago. It is not a mere rhetoric.
Several government initiatives towards the achievement of this policy led to two major steps: first, a repeal of the Sports Decree, 1976, SMCD 54, and an enactment of the Sports Act, 2016, Act 934.
The government needs to drive the agenda of commercialisation and promotion of employment and job opportunities in the sports sector.
Benefits of sports
Sports generates thousands of private-sector jobs, especially for the youth.
Though the data surrounding the number of people directly or indirectly employed by the football sub-sector of sports in Ghana, it is estimated that about 20,000 are beneficiaries.
This industry also enables young people to channel their energies productively, reducing the risk of delinquency and fostering a sense of purpose.
In addition to personal development, sports creates job opportunities for young people, spanning various roles such as players, coaches, administrators, and media personnel. The professionalisation of football, for instance, has opened avenues for youth employment and entrepreneurship.
Track and field, arm wrestling, boxing, tennis, table tennis, and numerous disciplines engage Ghanaian youth.
This new Ministry must consider incentives for private investment in sports to expand employment opportunities. Key aspects like professionalism, sponsorship, standards, and regulation require urgent attention to maximise the sector’s potential.
Foreign Exchange Earnings
Beyond recreation, sports is an engine for economic empowerment and a pathway to global opportunities.
I admit we would need the right data to appreciate its contribution to the inflow of foreign exchange into the country, but one cannot deny the fact that since the mid-1980s, Ghana has “exported” a good number of players to clubs in Europe for millions of foreign exchange as transfer fees.
FIFA regulations require five per cent of the transfer fee to be paid to the club(s) that nurture(s) a talent between the ages of 12 and 21.
Hence, the moves made by Abedi Pele, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan (who at one point was the world’s eighth-highest-paid player), Kwadwo Asamoah, Ayew brothers, Anthony Annan, etc., were a direct investment into Ghana’s economy.
When Thomas Partey was transferred from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal for a whopping £50m, five per cent of that money came directly to the clubs that contributed to his development.
Other transfers of Ghanaian football players of repute include Mohammed Kudus, Ibrahim Osman, Kamaldeen Suleman, and Ernest Nuamah, just to mention a few.
These international transfers have generated significant foreign exchange for the nation and for clubs to develop more talent.
When these players return to the country, they are here with foreign exchange. No matter how little, a foreign exchange’s impact on our economy should be appreciated.
Furthermore in 2008, the Ghana Football Association signed a five-year contract of $22.5m with Glo Mobile Limited for sponsorship of the Black stars and Ghana Premeir League.
Infrastructure development
Through the hosting of international sporting tournaments, the infrastructure stock of the country has been enhanced, the most recent being the addition of sporting facilities and roads in Borteyman and the University of Ghana.

While initiatives like constructing AstroTurf pitches are commendable, more efforts are needed to preserve and expand community spaces for recreation and talent development. For instance, addressing the loss of playing fields in areas like Nima, which has produced football legends like Mohamed Polo and Mohammed Kudus, is essential for sustaining this talent pipeline.
Unity and national identity
This industry holds an unparalleled ability to unite people across political, ethnic, and religious divides. The unwavering support for Ghana’s national teams, particularly the Black Stars, during international competitions, exemplifies how sports foster national unity.
How can anyone forget how Ghanaians stayed awake all night to watch Azumah Nelson’s boxing bouts and rallied behind the national football teams? Sports bring Ghanaians together like no other endeavour.

Another variant of national unity can be promoted through the institution of community, district, regional, and national games across different disciplines of sports.
Research in South Africa has shown that during epic football games between rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, crime rates have dropped significantly because many criminals are at the stadium watching the game.
Tourism and global recognition
Sports promotes Ghana’s image on the global stage, serving as an effective tool for marketing the country. International tournaments have not only showcased Ghana’s sporting prowess but also boosted its tourism and cultural appeal.
The exposure garnered through sporting achievements has elevated the nation’s profile, clearing ambiguities about its identity and distinguishing it from similarly named countries like Guyana.
Through sports, some non-Africans have appreciated Ghana as a sovereign state, separate and distinct from Guyana in Central America. Investments in sports can position Ghana as a leading tourist and investment destination, as seen in countries like Qatar and Morocco.
A shift towards Recreation and Well-being
The alignment of sports with recreation is a novel approach, shifting the focus to health and well-being. Recreational activities such as keep-fit clubs, which thrived in the past, can be revitalised to combat rising lifestyle diseases like hypertension and diabetes. Designating a national fitness day monthly could further encourage healthy living among Ghanaians of all ages.

However, this focus on recreation should not overshadow the critical role of sports in driving development. The Ministry of Sports and Recreation must collaborate closely with the newly created Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment to ensure a balanced approach that maximises the potential of both domains.

The ministerial vetting of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance designate, by the Appointments Committee of Parliament appeared to involve some drama, with moments of heated clashes and arguments recorded.
From a clash between the Chairman of the committee, Bernard Ahiafor, and the Ranking member Alexander kwamina Afenyo-Markin, to one between the Chairman and Abena Osei Asare, who are all members of the committee, a moment of laughter erupted, briefly lightening the tense and serious atmosphere.
While addressing the committee, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson took the opportunity to reflect on his early days and the positive relationship he shares with Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament.
According to him, he is more experienced and holds seniority over Afenyo-Markin due to the delays he encountered on his path to becoming a parliamentarian.
In a heartwarming remark, Ato Forson mentioned his early days with Afenyo-Markin, noting how they both shared aspirations of becoming lawmakers.
“Myself and the Minority leader have a history. We planned to enter this chamber together but unfortunately, in his first attempt, he couldn’t make it and I did. Mr. Chairman, he lost that primary and I won,” he remarked.
Ato Forson jovially pointed out his seniority over Afenyo-Markin, stating that he is a term ahead of the Minority Leader while highlighting that their friendship did not affect or influence their decision-making in carrying out their respective roles.

“Today, I am one term older than him and his senior. He is older than me by just four months, same year, and two constituencies apart. We used to do private sector business even before we all entered here, and we have known ourselves growing up.”
He continued, “Everyone knows the relationship between us but working with him didn’t stop me from doing my work and didn’t stop him from doing his work. To add to colleagues, we may have relationships but it shouldn’t stop you from doing your work. We should work for God and our country and must be done with the best of intentions to help our country grow.”
Concluding his emotional remarks, Ato Forson playfully encouraged Afenyo-Markin to follow his example and learn from his experience, having once served as a Minority Leader.
“We did just that, had our moments, fought and reunited ourselves. Today, the tables have turned and he is now the Minority Leader. Kwamina, learn from me and be good,” he said, eliciting laughter from the room.

Mayor Bass, who has advocated for improved international relations and cultural links with Africa, was in Ghana to attend President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s swearing-in ceremony.
While her attendance was intended to reinforce the historical connection between the African diaspora and the continent, many Los Angeles residents believe her absence at a vital time for the city was improper.
The criticism originates from the catastrophic situation in Los Angeles, where a succession of wildfires and continued homelessness have left locals feeling uneasy. Wildfires raged through the city during her journey, damaging homes and displacing residents. Residents who felt abandoned during their time of need expressed their frustration on social media networks.
“While our city burns—literally—our mayor is halfway across the world. “How does this make sense?” a resident tweeted. Others contended that, while foreign ties are vital, the mayor’s first responsibility is to those who elected her.

The Austrian foreign ministry says a female citizen has been taken by unknown assailants in the military-ran West African country, Niger.
It confirmed the incident to AFP and said they were aware of the “possible kidnapping of an Austrian woman” in Agadez which is 900 km (559 miles) from the capital Niamey.
The woman was reportedly forced into a 4×4 vehicle by unidentified individuals in the Fada district, Agadez, on the edge of the Sahara Desert, reported Reuters news agency.
The victim, named Eva Gretzmacher, is a development worker in her mid-70s and had lived in Niger for over two decades, according to the local media site, Air Info Agadez.
Niger has not yet commented on the incident.
Air Info reported kidnappers showed up at Ms Gretzmacher’s house with a gun and forced their way in. They did not take anything else, reports said.
Ms Gretzmacher is said to have run projects in the areas of education, health, women’s empowerment and culture.
The Austrian foreign ministry said they are working with the EU delegation and authorities on the ground.
Niger has been battling an Islamist insurgency for years.
The military junta is under pressure for failing to curb militant attacks, one of its justifications for deposing democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023.
Niger, along with its neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso, is grappling with attacks from groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS.
Since the coup, Niger has urged France and other Western powers to withdraw their military bases and formed a security alliance with junta-led neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso.

President John Mahama has announced that his administration will reassess the controversial National Cathedral project, which has been marred by controversy under the previous administration.
According to Mr Mahama, his administration will review the cost of the entire project and seek funding for its construction.
“This project must be completed at a reasonable cost. Given the current circumstances that Ghana is facing, it makes no sense to undertake such a project at a whooping sum of $400 million. I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which serves all Christian denominations in Nigeria, was built at a cost of $30 million. I believe we can achieve this project at a much more reasonable figure, and together, we can raise the necessary funds,” he said.
The president, speaking at his first National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, added that if his government decides to continue the project, the location will also be reconsidered.
“Such a reconsideration of this project might even include changing the current site that was chosen for the project,” he said.
Mr Mahama further emphasised that state funds would not be used for the project, stating, “On the future of the project, the Cathedral, I believe that all of us, as Christians, must forge a consensus on how to achieve this project without recourse to public funds.”
The construction of the Cathedral was started by President Akufo-Addo to fulfill a promise he claims to have made to God before winning the 2016 elections.
He assured Ghanaians that it would not be funded with public money, but it later emerged that the state, through the then Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, had allocated public funds for its construction.
The project faced further setbacks when some members of the Board of Trustees, who were men of faith, were accused of inappropriate conduct, leading to delays in the completion of the building, which is located in the heart of Accra.
Amidst the controversies, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) investigated the matter and recommended that the Auditor-General conduct a forensic audit to determine what went wrong and, if necessary, prosecute those found to be responsible for any wrongdoing.

The World Bank has pledged continuing technical and financial support to improve Ghana’s agriculture for enhanced food production for local consumption and export.
He said Ghana had the capacity to produce enough food to feed herself and export to other African countries.
The Regional Vice President for West and Central, Ousmane Diagana, made the pledge here yesterday after his working visit to Asutsuare.
He was there to inspect some projects on the $150 million West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP).
Some of the projects he inspected are the Kpong Irrigation Scheme and Kpong Left Bank Irrigation Scheme, Agropole, being supported in their rehabilitation to boost commercial and small-scale farming in the Accra plains.
As part of the tour, Mr Diagana visited Gel Banana Farms, Golden Exotics Limited and Smallholder Rice Farms which are utilising the irrigation schemes.
The objective of the visit was to see the progress of work on the project and interact with beneficiary farmers.
The FRSP is a Government of Ghana and World Bank-funded programme being implemented under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The FRSP Ghana project which is a sequel to the Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project, has received an initial funding of $150 million from the International Development Association (IDA).
The project, which started in June 2023 and expected to be completed in September 2028, has the objective to increase the country’s preparedness against food insecurity and improve the resilience of food systems in Ghana through the construction of irrigation schemes across the country in order to ensure all-year-round commercial and small-scale farming.
After the tour of the projects, Mr Diagana said the country needed to reform her agriculture to become food systems resilient and the World Bank would continue to support Ghana in that direction.
He said agriculture was essential to promote food security, job creation, poverty reduction and that “No country can achieve food security without investing in agriculture in agriculture.”
The Project Coordinator of the FRSP Ghana, Mr Osei Owusu-Agyeman, said as part of the project, the two irrigation schemes were being rehabilitated to boost agriculture in the area.
He said road infrastructure, and warehouses had be constructed to help store the food crops produced in the area.
Mr Owusu-Agyeman said smart-climate interventions has been introduced to help the farmers withstand the effects of climate change.
The Managing Director of Pel’s Farms Trading Limited, Ms Priscilla Adom Tawiah, appealed to the World Bank for matching grants to support the investors by utilising the two irrigation schemes for agricultural purposes.
She said credit was a big challenge facing the investors, saying it was expensive to rely on bank loans to finance their agricultural operations.
The Divisional Chief of Tsangmer and Acting Chief of Asutsuare l, Nene Narh Guamatsu IV, in his remarks indicated that the Osudoku Traditional Area had vast lands for agricultural purposes and the rehabilitation of the irrigation schemes would help increase food productivity in the area.
That, he said, would also help promote the country’s food resilience and security.
Nene Narh Guamatsu IV appealed to the government to involve the chiefs and traditional authorities of the area in the allocation of the Accra Plains lands to investors for agricultural purposes, saying the chiefs and traditional authorities were left out in such negotiations.

Abu Dhabi (UAE) Jan. 12, GNA-The 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) opened today with a call on countries to make conscious decisions towards including renewable energy in their generation mix.
This will help reduce emission contributing to climate crisis and ensure prosperity and sustainability.
Renewable energy is energy derived from natural sources, including sunshine, wind, geothermal and hydro, that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed.
“Let us use the IRENA Assembly as a platform to forge partnerships, share best practices, and advance the solutions that will shape the renewable energy systems of tomorrow and critically create resilient and prosperous societies,” Mr Francesco La Camera, IRENA Director-General, said at the opening of the session in Abu Dhabi.
Under the theme, “Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,” the two-day meetings brought together ministers and high-level delegates from IRENA’s 139 Member States, academia, development banks, chief executives and youth, to enhance wider, cross-sectoral collaboration on the energy transition.
Over the period, key discussions would focus on tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, enhancing ambition in Nationally Determined Contributions, supporting transitions in emerging economies, and leveraging innovative financial flows in developing countries.
Mr La Camera said renewable energy offered a path forward – a means to reduce dependence on finite resources, stabilise energy costs, and empower countries to harness their domestic resources for energy independence.
“2024 was the first year that IRENA delivered on its new mandate to monitor progress in implementing the global pledge from the United Arab Emirate consensus to triple renewables and double efficiency,” he said.
“However, despite our progress in certain areas, the world remains off track to deliver on its promise. The energy transition cannot be viewed as a mere response to a crisis but a proactive strategy to get on the 1.5-degree pathway and ensure long-term stability, equity, and sustainability in the global energy landscape”.
Mr. Bojan Kumer, the President of the 15th IRENA Assembly, said the urgency of the global missions was critical and renewable energy sources were indispensable in the journey to decarbonization and a sustainable future for all.
“Let me also emphasise that we are also at a critical time for accelerating our efforts to triple renewable energy capacity. “We understand that the principle of a just global transition is on our minds,” he said, adding that synergy was required between the deployment of renewable energy technology to address energy poverty.
Mr Kumer who is the Minister of the Environment, Climate and Energy of Slovenia, reiterated the need for countries to focus on translating the shared vision into actions.
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, United Arab Emirates, said, “The world around us is changing, constantly and rapidly. Climate change is no longer on the way, it is knocking on the door.”
She urged countries to take steps to reduce emission using key enablers of the energy transition, including technology, financing and skills and capacities development.
“While the challenges we face are immense, so is our potential to overcome them. Together, we have the tools, the knowledge, and the determination to shape a future where renewable energy powers prosperity and sustainability for all. Let us move forward with ambition and shared purpose,” Dr Al Dahak added.
Mr António Guterres, UN Secretary General, said “We must move faster to bring the great benefits of clean power to all and to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius”.
That, he said, required urgent action with governments charting a just transition away from fossil fuels towards clean energy in their new national climate action plans due this year.
“These must align with the 1.5-degree limit – as promised,” he said.
Mr Seth Mahu, Director of Renewable Energy at the Energy Ministry said Ghana was taking steps to increase renewable energy share and that nearly 30 percent of the country’s energy was being generated through renewable energy with plans to increase it by 10 per cent by 2030.
He said with the coming on stream of about 60 megawatts (MW) solar projects-10MW at Yendi, and 50MW at Bui Power Authority’s Generating Station this year, Ghana’s renewable energy installed capacity would increase to close to about 260 MW.
Mr Mahu noted that the total installed capacity of the mini-grid would account for approximately 4.8 percent of the total modern renewable energy (wind, solar) in the country’s energy generation mix.
“Keeping in mind the target of 10 per cent by 2030, we will be able to meet that and probably exceed it looking at the number of projects underway and those coming on stream. Our renewable energy capacity may shoot to almost about 1,000 MW or even 1,400 MW by 2030,” he said.
Mr Mahu said all the projects contributed to the ongoing global conversation on sustainability, improving health, and reducing emissions. GNA
