BLACK QUEENS forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah has joined English side Nottingham Forest Women ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The forward who was part of the Black Queens 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations team that won bronze, joined the London club on two-year deal.

The forward joins from WSL2 champions London City Lionesses, where she played a pivotal role in their promotion campaign scoring six goals including a crucial header in the final day title-decider against Birmingham City.

Boye-Hlorkah started her career in Merseyside at Everton’s Centre of Excellence before making her Women’s Super League debut for the Toffees in 2013, scoring her first goal for the club later that season.

After an eight-year stint with Everton, the forward joined WSL outfit Aston Villa in 2021 where Boye-Hlorkah would stay for two seasons.

In the 2023/24 season, Boye-Hlorkah signed for London City Lionesses with the 29-year-old clocking up 37 appearances over a two-year stint with the club.

On the international stage, Boye-Hlorkah represented England at U19 and U23 level before switching allegiance to Ghana in 2023.

On signing for Forest, Boye-Hlorkah said: “I’m excited to join the Club and play with this group of players.

“The team had an incredible season last year – history is being created here and I’m grateful that I can be a part of continuing to build something special at the Club.”

Nottingham Forest Women head coach, Carly Davies said the club was thrilled to to welcome Chantelle to the club, indicating that “having worked with Chaney previously I know the quality, experience and versatility she brings.

“Chaney is a player with proven quality at the highest level having previously played for Everton, Aston Villa and reigning WSL2 champions London City Lionesses. She will bring a wealth of knowledge and attacking threat to our team.

“Her ability to influence games, both with and without the ball, will be a huge asset as we continue to push for success. We’re excited to see her in the Garibaldi Red,” she added.

It is not an offence to insult the President. – Ace Ankomah

Ace Ankomah is a seasoned lawyer

Lawyer Ace Ankomah, in September 2017, rose to the defence of NDC’s serial caller, Frank Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as Appiah Stadium, for tagging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a ‘wee smoker’.

Following Appiah Stadium’s arrest, Ankomah argued that insulting the president is not an offence according to the laws of the country and, therefore, his arrest was uncalled for.

“Until 2001, it was an offence to insult the president. Section 183A of the Criminal Offences Act provided that if a person who intends to bring the President into hatred, ridicule or contempt publishes any defamatory or insulting matter about the President, that person could be liable to a fine and/or imprisonment. But come 2001, the NPP government repealed this section together with the repeal of the then criminal libel laws,” he said.

Appiah Stadium was arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command, handcuffed, and transported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra for interrogation on September 26, 2017, following his statement against the then-president Akufo-Addo.

On the back of his “unlawful” arrest, the National Democratic Congress, in a statement, called for the immediate release of Appiah Stadium, adding that “the release of Appiah Stadium from police custody is non-negotiable; as such, we give the Akufo-Addo government 24 hours to produce him or we will take every means possible to get Appiah out.”

Lawyer Ace Anan Ankomah has dismissed assertions that insulting the president is an offence according to the laws of the country.

He explains that such acts as insulting presidents are wrong, but cannot be described as an offence demanding action by law enforcement authorities.

His comments follow the recent debate arising as a result of the arrest of popular serial caller Frank Kwaku Appiah, commonly referred to as Appiah Stadium.

He is alleged to have accused President Akufo-Addo of being a ‘wee’ smoker.

The Ashanti Regional Police command on Tuesday arrested Appiah Stadium in handcuffs and subsequently transported him to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra for further interrogation.

His arrest led to a huge debate as a section of the public, particularly the NDC, argued that it was unlawful.

“We demand the immediate release of Appiah Stadium from police custody now in the interest of the stability of the State. The release of Appiah Stadium from police custody is non-negotiable, as such we give the Akufo-Addo government 24 hours to produce him or we take every means possible to get Appiah out,” a statement from the party said.

But in a Facebook post on his wall, Ace Anan Ankumah wrote, “what is wrong is wrong. Appiah Stadiom is wrong but has committed no offence. There should have been no arrest and no handcuffing. You can invite him for a discussion on the possible implications of his action on public order. Even then he’s not bound to honour the invitation. Leave the man to his own devices.”

Referring to an article of his from 2010, Ace Anan Ankumah noted that “Life is interesting. Those who insulted me for this position have become converts, disciples and apostles and are now speaking like my clones or parrots.” referring to the barrage of attacks he received for espousing similar points in defence of perceived NPP sympathisers who allegedly insulted late president Atta-Mills

In the said article, Ace Ankomah stated firmly that insulting the President per the Criminal Code of the 1992 constitution of Ghana, cannot be considered an offence.

He has also suggested that before 2001, there was an offence called insulting the President, but as part of the 2001 repeal of the Criminal Libel Regime, that section of the Criminal and other Offences Act were repealed.

“Until 2001, it was an offence to insult the president. Section 183A of the Criminal Offences Act provided that if a person who intends to bring the President into hatred, ridicule or contempt publishes any defamatory or insulting matter about the President, that person could be liable to a fine and/or imprisonment. But come 2001, the NPP government repealed this section together with the repeal of the then criminal libel laws.”

“Technically, insulting the President is no longer an offence under our laws. Meanwhile, insulting a chief remains an offence which should never be criminalised,” he stated.

“This is the highest office of the land occupied by a man voted by Ghanaians, and we can’t have any Tom, Dick and Harry get up in a radio station and describe him in such unpalatable language” he said passionately.

Appiah Stadium has since rendered an apology to the citizenry and the President during an interview with Neat FM in Accra, Monday, September 25, 2017.

In a heartfelt statement, the chiefs and elders of the council in the Oti Region expressed profound sorrow and called on all Ghanaians to honour the victims’ legacy through unity and dedicated service.

Cholera kills 40 as Sudan faces worst outbreak in years, says MSF

0

A child infected with cholera receives treatment in the cholera isolation centre in a refugee camp A child infected with cholera receives treatment in the cholera isolation centre in a refugee camp

At least 40 people have died from cholera in Sudan’s Darfur region in what medical charity Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, described as the country’s worst outbreak in years.

MSF said on Thursday that the vast western region, already devastated by more than two years of fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), is bearing the brunt of an outbreak that began a year ago.

“On top of an all-out war, people in Sudan are now experiencing the worst cholera outbreak the country has seen in years,” the group said in a statement cited by the AFP news agency. “In the Darfur region alone, MSF teams treated over 2,300 patients and recorded 40 deaths in the past week.”

Nationwide, health authorities have reported 99,700 suspected cases and 2,470 deaths linked to cholera since August 2023.

The bacterial infection, transmitted through contaminated food and water, can cause severe diarrhoea, vomiting and muscle cramps. It can kill within hours without treatment, though simple oral rehydration or antibiotics can save lives.

On Wednesday, health officials launched a 10-day vaccination drive in the capital, Khartoum, to slow what aid agencies warn is a fast-moving outbreak worsened by war, mass displacement and heavy rainfall.

MSF said millions forced from their homes by the conflict now struggle to access clean water for drinking, cooking and hygiene. In Tawila, North Darfur, where about 380,000 people have fled ongoing fighting near el-Fasher, residents survive on just 3 litres (3.2qt) of water per day – less than half the emergency minimum of 7.5 litres (8qt) per person.

“In displacement and refugee camps, families often have no choice but to drink from contaminated sources and many contract cholera,” said Sylvain Penicaud, MSF’s project coordinator in Tawila. “Just two weeks ago, a body was found in a well inside one of the camps. It was removed, but within two days, people were forced to drink from that same water again.”

Since the army retook Khartoum in March, fighting has intensified in Darfur, with the RSF attempting to seize el-Fasher, the last major city in the region still under army control. The United Nations has described dire conditions for civilians trapped inside.

Heavy rains have further contaminated water sources and damaged sewage systems, MSF warned, while people fleeing the fighting are carrying the disease into neighbouring Chad and South Sudan.

MSF’s head of mission in Sudan, Tuna Turkmen, described the situation as “beyond urgent”.

“The outbreak is spreading well beyond displacement camps now, into multiple localities across Darfur states and beyond,” Turkmen said. “Survivors of war must not be left to die from a preventable disease.”

Sudan’s war, which began in Khartoum in April 2023, has killed more than 40,000 people, displaced an estimated 12 million and pushed millions towards famine.

Military Helicopter Crash: French Envoy commiserates with Ghana, describes incident as “big loss”

0

By James Amoh Jnr.

Accra, Aug. 14, GNA – Mr Jules Armand Aniambossou, the French Ambassador to Ghana, has commiserated with the Government and people of Ghana over the August 6 military helicopter crash.

He described the tragedy as not only a big loss to Ghana but also a loss to France due to the strong partnership between the two countries.

Mr Aniambossou joined other envoys to signed the Book of Condolence at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in honour of the eight distinguished Ghanaians, including senior government officials and military officers, who perished in the Adansi Akrofuom crash in the Ashanti Region.

“This loss is a loss for Ghana, but also a big loss for France because of the strong partnership between our two countries, and it’s why today, this terrible accident affects us deeply,” the French Ambassador said.

He disclosed that President Emmanuel Macron of France had personally called the President of Ghana to extend his condolences, followed by an Instagram post addressed to the President, the Government, and the people of Ghana.

“That is very, very important, I’m here today to express again our sincere condolences to all Ghanaians, and it’s very important to know that we, the French, are so close to this country that everything that affects Ghana also affects us,” he said.

Mr Aniambossou said France’s sympathy was not merely symbolic, but heartfelt, and that the French Government would do everything possible to ensure the families of the victims were never forgotten.

“I personally knew very well some of them, so I’m personally very affected,” he noted.

The Ambassador said: “But beyond that, the initiative that the President, His Excellency John Mahama, will take to never forget the families is a very, very great one. We applaud it.”

He lauded President Macron’s public message, stating that its concluding paragraph emphasised the importance of supporting the families and loved ones of those who had passed away.

The French envoy reiterated his condolences, saying: “May their soul rest in peace. We are very, very affected, and we should continue praying for them, and for Ghana.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has opened the Book of Condolence from August 12 to 14, allowing members of the Diplomatic Corps, government officials, and citizens to pay their respects.

The August 6 crash, which occurred during a flight in the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of high-ranking personalities, including Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; and state and senior military officers.

Tributes continue to pour in from across the globe, with foreign missions in Ghana, international partners, and allied nations commiserating with the country.

Mr Aniambossou’s further reinforced France’s longstanding ties with Ghana, which span political, economic, and cultural cooperation.

He emphasised that such moments of grief strengthened bonds of friendship between nations, particularly when shared values of solidarity and mutual respect were evident.

The Ambassador further underscored the importance of collective remembrance and support for the bereaved, adding that tragedies of this magnitude tested the resilience of nations but also offered opportunities for unity.

France, he assured, would remain steadfast in its solidarity with Ghana, not only in moments of celebration but also in times of deep sorrow. “We will never forget the families,” he said. “We will always stand by Ghana.”

Calm returns to Bonteso after Youth-Police clash over excavator seizure – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Calm has been restored in Bonteso in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region following a violent clash between community youth and a police anti-galamsey task force that left several people injured.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, when the Special Anti-Galamsey Task Force, during a routine patrol, intercepted an excavator allegedly engaged in illegal mining. While the team was loading the machine onto a truck, tensions flared as a group of illegal miners — reportedly incited by the Assembly Member for the area, Patrick Asare — mobilised to resist the operation.

The confrontation resulted in four arrests, including the assembly member, and left two police officers injured.

However, District Chief Executive (DCE) Prince Manu Morris explained that the residents were engaged in sand-winning activities at a galamsey site. He said the task force mistook their presence for illegal mining, prompting the attempted seizure of the excavator and sparking the clash.

The DCE also clarified that no military or additional police personnel had been deployed to the area, contrary to some reports.

He confirmed that five injured individuals are receiving treatment at various health facilities, while the assembly member and three others remain in police custody.

In an interview with Citi News, the DCE said, “As we speak, calm has been restored, and everyone is going about their normal duties. What happened was that the youth attempted to prevent the police from taking away their machines and started pelting stones at the police, and the police fired shots to protect themselves, resulting in the clash.

“Five people sustained injuries; currently, they are all in admissions at various health centres. No security personnel sustained major injury.”

Ogun state first lady, Bamidele Abiodun, pays tribute to her son, Gbemiga aka DJ Olu, who would have turned a year older today

0

The first lady of Ogun state, Bamidele Abiodun, took to social media to pay tribute to her son, Gbemiga aka DJ Olu, who would have turned a year older today August 14.

Late DJ Olu alongside his friend Chime passed away on October 7, 2017. He was 24 years old.

‘’2017 October, Lamissa to me, “Mummy you know, no matter how happy a situation is for us following this, it will never be complete because Gbemiga will not be there. We have to learn to live with that.”

How right she was at such a sad reality.

It is your birthday again, and I am grateful, so grateful to God for many things. Happy too, but my happiness is always interrupted by the jolt of the reality, you’re not here to celebrate with us, nor we with you.

Despite my faith in God, I am honest with myself enough to know this is an enduring pain, imagining what you would look like, how different my life would have been having you here, all the plans you had for yourself and for me; our precious, very honest moments. Oh, my heart breaks as I write this, and imagine what could have been, but God knows best and allowed things to be this way.

My Gbemiga, continue to rest in peace, as we continue to remember you fondly on your birthday, because I know this is what you would have wanted. Love you this birthday, and always.”

Court denies bail for Wontumi TV Presenter

0

The Accra Circuit Court has refused bail for Wontumi TV presenter Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, who was arrested after making on-air comments linking former President John Mahama to the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.

Kofi Asare was picked up by police on Tuesday, August 12, following the broadcast, which authorities say contained unsubstantiated allegations related to the August 6 crash.

The fatal incident, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region, has since sparked national mourning, and a state funeral is scheduled for Friday, August 15.

During Thursday’s court proceedings, the judge declined the defence team’s bail application, ordering that the accused be remanded into police custody pending further investigation.

Speaking to Citi News after the ruling, counsel for the accused, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, criticised the court’s decision, describing it as a miscarriage of justice.

Mr. Afoakwah further indicated that the legal team would challenge the ruling at the High Court.

Alhaji Grusah drops explosive claims against Dreams FC

The storm over the Ghana Football Association’s controversial decision to extend the presidential term limit from two to three terms has taken a dramatic twist, with King Faisal President Alhaji Karim Grusah launching a scathing attack on current GFA boss Kurt Okraku and his club, Dreams FC.

Speaking to Peace FM after the GFA Congress on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Grusah, who had earlier attempted to injunct the meeting through the courts but failed, accused Okraku of presiding over a reign of selfish interests that has damaged Ghana’s national teams since his tenure began.

“It’s left with two years. If you have something better to do, just do it. Kurt has a selfish interest; he has damaged all our national teams since his tenure began. Those who voted for him did so because of money, and God has seen them all,” he said.

The outspoken football administrator, a long-time critic of the third-term proposal, went further to allege that Dreams FC have been involved in match-fixing in the Ghana Premier League, vowing to take the matter to court again with what he claims is “solid proof.”

“Kurt’s team is engaged in fixed matches. Dreams are involved in match-fixing. I have proof. I will send them to court again,” Grusah charged.

He also called on former GFA Chairman Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, another vocal opponent of the amendment, to join him in legal action to save Ghana football.

“I’m not finished with them. We gave them a letter, so why are they running away? I will call Tamakloe so we can take it to court. The Executive Committee members should come out and save Ghana football,” he further added.

Alhaji Grusah also accused the current leadership of using intimidation to silence dissent, claiming that clubs such as Hearts of Oak “fear Kurt” because refusing to “dance to his tune” could lead to relegation.

He further dismissed the GFA’s celebrations over a bronze medal at the 2024 WAFCON, contrasting it with Ghana’s past silver-winning feats.

“He said he had ‘master plans’ at the beginning of his tenure, but he should show us what he has done. All he has brought is disgrace. We have won WAFCON silvers before, but see how the GFA celebrated bronze at the 2024 WAFCON,” he stated.

Manhyia North MP predicts NDC’s 2024 electoral gains will fade by 2028

0

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Akwasi Konadu, has expressed strong confidence that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will struggle to replicate its electoral performance from the 2024 general elections when Ghanaians head to the polls in 2028.

In an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, August 13, Mr Konadu said the outcome of the next elections would be determined by the NDC’s record in office and their success, or otherwise, in delivering on the promises made to voters.

‘Don’t Sell Your Cocoa Farms For Galamsey’

A farmer cutting down cocoa trees

The Assembly member for Yawkrom, a farming community in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality, Thomas Djamgba, has called on cocoa farmers not to cut down their cocoa trees or sell their farms to illegal miners for illegal mining activities.

Mr. Djamgba admitted that cocoa farmers in the country are justified in expressing their disappointment and anger towards the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government after the announcement of the cocoa producer price for the 2024/2025 season, recently.

He noted that the farmers feel betrayed because the price increase of GH¢128.75 per bag, bringing the price to GH¢3,228.75, falls far short of the GH¢6,000 promise made by the NDC during the 2024 election campaign.

He has, however, appealed to cocoa farmers, particularly those in the Yawkrom Electoral Area, to rescind their decision to either sell their farms or cut down their cocoa trees for galamsey activities.

He said, “Sometime ago, the price per bag was GH¢1,380, then later it came to GH¢3,100 and now it is GH¢3,228. Who knows may be tomorrow, it will be GH¢5,000.”

“So I am appealing to colleague cocoa farmers to resist any attempts by illegal mining companies to invade their farms to buy them outright.

Some of the youth who have vowed to resist illegal mining activities in their communities

“The galamseyers can give you two billion old cedis, but that money cannot take care of you and your families for the rest of your lives. And it can even get lost after collecting it,” he asserted.

He added, “I am getting to 40 years and I used the proceeds from my cocoa farm to go to teacher training college and the university. So please farmers, do not destroy your farms no matter what.”

Mr. Djamgba also cautioned his colleagues against smuggling cocoa beans to the neighbouring countries, since that will enrich those nations at the expense of Ghana.

In a related development, he indicated that residents of three communities —Yawkrom, Oseiakuapem and Obengkrom— have vowed to resist any illegal mining activities in their communities.

He said for sometime now, a certain company has been visiting the communities claiming to have been given licence by the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry to do prospecting in the area.

“Meanwhile, usually when they come like this, at the end of the day you see them doing galamsey.

“So we will allow any company to enter our communities only when the ministry has engaged the residents and the chiefs for the proper things to be done,” he pointed out.

He said there would be nothing left for the next generation if illegal mining activities are not stopped.

NDC holds vigil in Koforidua for Omane Boamah and helicopter crash victims

The Eastern Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has held a solemn vigil at Koforidua Jackson Park in honour of Dr Edward Omane Boamah and seven others who died in the August 6 helicopter crash.

The event, held on the night of Wednesday, August 13, brought together NDC members, residents, and members of the clergy.

Former NDC National Chairman and Policy Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, praised Dr Boamah for strengthening the party’s presence within the medical community, recalling his role in establishing the NDC at the University of Ghana Medical School.

“We won’t allow death to break us down. It will strengthen us to continue the reset agenda for the benefit of all,” he said.

Eastern Regional Minister Madam Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey also lauded Dr Boamah’s leadership and his fight against illegal mining, describing him as a stalwart who championed community engagement in tackling galamsey.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, signed the book of condolence and cautioned religious leaders against making unfounded public statements about the tragedy.

He urged sensitivity, prayer, and restraint, reminding them of the pain of the bereaved families.

Amaarae addresses backlash for not featuring a Ghanaian on ‘Black Star’ album

Following the release of her latest studio album titled Black Star, Ghanaian Afropop singer Amaarae has faced criticism from some netizens over certain observations.

Critics have questioned her decision not to feature any Ghanaian artiste on the project, despite performing songs by other Ghanaians at Coachella 2025 and actively promoting Ghana on global stages.

Amaarae, who is based in the United States, has been vocal about her love for Ghana.

Amaarae shines at 2025 Coachella

Earlier this year, she represented Ghana at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California.

Her performance on April 13 at the Empire Polo Club was not just about her music, she also used the moment to shine a spotlight on other Ghanaian artistes.

On stage, she performed songs from Eazzy, Joey B, La Même Gang, and the Asakaa Boys, among others.

At one point, she made the audience to wave the Ghana flag, and made sure the flag was displayed on stage.

Due to these circumstances, fans somewhat expected her new album to feature at least one artiste based in Ghana.

‘I had to give a moment to my country’ – Amaarae on performing other Ghanaian songs at Coachella

But when “Black Star” dropped, the featured artistes were not from Ghana like netizens expected.

The album included UK alt-pop artiste Pink Pantheress, American R&B legend Charlie Wilson, supermodel Naomi Campbell, the mysterious act Starkillers, and UK-based rapper Bree Runway.

Many critics have since argued that Amaarae had failed to support local, home-based talent artiste.

However, Amaarae has responded to these claims.

In a video posted on her TikTok on August 13,2025, she was with Bree Runway a Ghanaian UK resident, to address the situation.

The two, speaking in Twi and English, laughed off the idea that Bree was not Ghanaian.

“You people were saying I did not feature any Ghanaian. You guys said I’m claiming Black Star, but I did not feature any Ghanaian. If I’m not Ghanaian, who am I? I’m Ghanaian, and mine is an American style. Hers is the UK style,” they said.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on the political leaders of Ghana to desist from engaging in partisanship over discussions around the purchase of a new presidential jet and military helicopters.

According to a report by asaaseradio.com, Otumfuo stressed the need to prioritise safety and operational efficiency. He made the statement when the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

“Enough of the politicisation of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” the report quoted opemsuo.com.

Otumfuo called for urgent investment in a modern replacement for the country’s existing fleet, noting that its current condition is not optimal.

Public figures who have called for an end to galamsey following horrific helicopter crash

The Asantehene was speaking in the wake of the August 6, 2025, fatal helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers, and has since reignited a conversation about the existing fleet of helicopters and jets belonging to the Ghana Armed Forces.

On August 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 military helicopter crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi Akrofuom District, Ashanti Region, Ghana, killing all eight people on board. The helicopter was en route from Kotoka International Airport in Accra to Obuasi for an event focused on combating illegal mining.

Among the victims were Ghana’s Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Register your trademark or risk losing your brand

Businesses operating in different product or service areas require separate trademark registrations Businesses operating in different product or service areas require separate trademark registrations

A global managing attorney, Sarah Norkor Anku, is urging business owners to protect their brands by registering trademarks for the exact goods and services they offer.

She warned that skipping this step could give competitors the opportunity to take over their brand identity.

She explained that registering a company is not the same as protecting every product or service under that company. Each product or service must be registered in the correct category to secure full trademark protection.

According to her, businesses operating in different product or service areas require separate trademark registrations for each category.

She stressed that a trademark protects the elements that make a brand recognisable in the market, such as a name, logo, slogan, or any other symbol associated with the goods and services.

“Your trademark is essentially your brand identifier, how we recognise you in the market. Trademarks can be names, logos, slogans, or any other identifier used to distinguish goods and services,” she told Joy Business.

Anku also shared a cautionary example of a business whose competitor registered its trademark first, resulting in a long and costly legal battle to reclaim it.

Alhaji Grusah petitions FIFA over Bus Acquisition Strategy by GFA

GFA donated nine buses to nine Division One League clubs in 2024 GFA donated nine buses to nine Division One League clubs in 2024

Veteran football administrator, Alhaji Karim Grusah has revealed that he has petitioned FIFA over the Ghana Football Association’s acquisition of buses for Division One League clubs.

According to the owner of King Faisal FC who has been a critic of the GFA recently, he is against the approved statute change allowing a GFA president to serve three terms and he will take the fight beyond Ghana’s borders.

“Kurt went and bought old, weathered buses, and if FIFA is indeed a credible organisation, they will speak out. I have already petitioned FIFA about this, and they have acknowledged receipt,” Grusah said in an interview with Asempa FM.

In November 2024, the GFA presented buses to nine Division One League clubs, Young Apostles, Techiman Heroes, Victory Club Warriors, Basake Holy Stars, New Edubiase, Ebusua Dwarfs, Vision FC, Okwawu United, and Hohoe United, as part of a capacity-building initiative.

The move was touted as a reward for the top three teams from each zone of the previous season.

But Grusah insists the deal violates FIFA rules, describing the buses as “old and weathered” units from Korea that no honest stakeholder should have accepted.

“I filed that petition to FIFA a long time ago. I didn’t want to reveal it, but I’m saying it now. Those buses are against FIFA’s rules, and I have written to them. I am not scared of anyone,” he further stated.

925 Fire Extinguishers Distributed Across Kantamanto

Kantamanto traders engaging in fire preventive measures

A TOTAL of 925 new fire extinguishers have been installed at various shops at the Kantamanto Market by The Or Foundation Ghana following the January fire outbreak, which ravaged large sections of the market, affecting over 30,000 traders and destroying more than 7,000 shops.

The foundation that funded the rebuilding of the market after the fire outbreak further instituted comprehensive fire safety training for the Kantamanto Market leaders by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The training programme, according to the foundation, will continue until every member of the market has been reached, ensuring that fire safety knowledge is widespread and practical.

Addressing the traders, the Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, called on traders to desist from engaging in illegal power connections, the purchase of substandard materials, and faulty electrical installations, as they are major contributors to market fires.

“Ensure you are using certified electricians for installations and maintain your electrical systems regularly. Be cautious about activities like cooking, ironing, and smoking in the market. Market leaders must designate safe areas for these activities and follow proper safety protocols,” he mentioned.

ACFO II Nisawu added that one of the pressing challenges confronting firefighters whenever there is fire outbreak in the market areas has to do with congestion, urging market authorities to keep walkways clear and ensure easy access for emergency responders.

He added that the GNFS expects the Kantamanto Market authorities to present committed individuals to be trained as fire wardens for the market. He further called on the provision of independent water sources at vantage points at the Kantamanto Market for firefighting purposes.

“The GNFS expects the Kantamanto Market authorities to provide alternative sources, for example, mechanised boreholes, to augment the fire hydrants situated at the markets. We also expect the market authorities to provide a post where fire personnel can be stationed to supervise the activities of traders and fire wardens,” he added.

Market Manager for Kantamanto Obroniwawu Businesses Association (KOBA), Adutwum Atta Manu, said that since the January fire outbreak, public perception has been that Kantamanto Market is not operational, which has affected businesses.

“The reality is that the market is fully open and remains a vital hub for trade in Accra. We also commend the foundation for their support and pledge to ensure that traders adhere to safety preventive measures,” he said.

Samaritan’s Feet Ghana & Healthier Soles USA partner for shoe distribution in Central, Eastern Regions

0

Over 3,000 schoolchildren in Ghana’s Central and Eastern Regions received brand-new antimicrobial World Shoes during a coordinated four-day campaign led by Samaritan’s Feet Ghana in partnership with US-based nonprofit Healthier Soles.

The four-day “Shoes of Hope” distribution campaign kicked off on July 8 in the Akwamufie community (Eastern Region), where 700 shoes were handed out to students at Akwamufie Presby School and the Community Vocational School, with several community members receiving pairs as well.

The MP for the district, together with some Local leaders, were in attendance, which depicted strong community support for the initiative.

On July 10, the team proceeded to the Central Region, where 767 pairs were distributed in the rural community of Kankaboom, and Kwaprow in partnership with The Komenda Project.

In Kankaboom, especially, the team’s presence discovered some children walking miles to school and other parts of town in slippers and some without shoes at all, with the majority suffering serious foot injuries. This problem clearly underscored the urgent need for our intervention.

The campaign reached its peak on July 11 in Nsawam (Eastern Region), where 2,280 school children across seven basic schools and community members received new shoes.

In Nsawam, our partnership extended to include Charisma Community Baptist Church, General Dodd Ministries and Inspiration Co. This event also featured a medical outreach led by OKB Hope Foundation and offered pressure and glucose blood screenings for the townsfolk, as well as general check-ups with laboratory exams.

The World Shoes are particularly unique; constructed from closed-cell EVA with antimicrobial properties, and are engineered to prevent foot-borne diseases and suit the harsh rural terrain.

Moreover, the shoes raise minimal environmental concerns due to the inclusion of biodegradable materials in their design. Alongside the footwear, proper hygiene and hand-washing sessions were conducted to teach the school children and foster long-term healthy practices.

The “Wash & Wear” service – where volunteers, teachers, church-based groups, and community leaders cleaned children’s feet and ensured proper fitting, added a compassionate and humane touch to the campaign, empowering the children and reinforcing their dignity.

What made this distribution remarkable was the involvement of  American teenage co-founders of Healthier Soles – Simar Kantor and Arav Makadia, who led fundraising efforts in the United States and travelled to Ghana with their families to take part in the four-day campaign.

Together with their parents and siblings, they actively washed feet and fitted shoes for recipients, adding an inspiring element and intergenerational diversity to the mission.

The program’s core message reinforces Samaritan’s Feet Ghana’s mission of removing barriers to education, one pair of shoes at a time.

CEO Prince Adu-Appiah noted, “Access to proper footwear is a basic but critical investment in a child’s health and education. When we remove health-related barriers, we give children a fair chance to learn, grow, and succeed.” The distribution not only protects children’s physical health but according to research, also promotes school attendance by eliminating obstacles linked to illness, discomfort or embarrassment.

The co-founders of Healthier Soles, Arav and Simar, shared that their inspiration came from reading in school about the challenges faced by children in underserved communities, particularly the lack of basic necessities like shoes.

They felt compelled to take action, believing that small, targeted interventions can spark lasting change. With their families’ backing, they decided to start their impact journey from Ghana in partnership with Samaritan’s Feet.

Being an epitome of the fusion of purpose, Samaritan’s Feet Ghana, Healthier Soles, World Shoes, OKB Hope Foundation, Charisma Community Baptist Church, General Dodd Ministries and The Komenda project have demonstrated, through this visionary collaboration, the effectiveness of multi-sector partnership in creating scalable and sustainable change.

Having reached 3,747 children and community members across two regions and nine rural communities, the “Shoes of Hope” campaign not only enhanced health and school attendance but also offered a replicable model, well-suited for emulation, across Ghana and West Africa.

As the Healthier Soles team returned home, they took with them a rich understanding of how a simple pair of shoes can catalyze profound impact.

Galamsey Is Everyone’s Business –

0

The writer

“And gold became god and man became merchandise.” A blessed land bleeding from the hands of her own children and serving foreigners platter.

In the heart of Ghana’s rich lands lies a broken mirror. A land once full of promise, now shattered by greed, silence and short-sightedness. We call it ‘Galamsey’, an innocent word that now carries the weight of a nation’s heartbreak.

What dates back to ancient days as survival mining has spiraled into a national wound. Rivers that once quenched our thirst now run like poisoned veins. Forests, cocoa, coffee, rubber and crop farms that once stood proud are bald and bleeding. The earth cries but who is listening?

This is not just about the environment. It is about us, our conscience, our dignity and our future. It is about our children who will one day ask: “What did you do when our land was dying?”

Too many of us have chosen silence; the comfortable silence that watches evil and calls it none of our business. Yet galamsey is everyone’s business. Whether you are a chief, a teacher, a pastor, a student, a journalist or a politician .The land that feeds us is bleeding before our very eyes.

We didn’t get here overnight. This deadly kind of galamsey didn’t begin with shovels and mercury. It began with permission; we call it order from above. With compromise, looking the other way, justifying wrong because of poverty and people who had the power to act but chose their pockets over their people.

It’s easy to point fingers at the galamsey boys, the young men risking their lives in the pits. But let’s ask ourselves: who sponsors them? Who is behind them? Who protects them? Who finances them? Are they the only real cause of our tragedy? Who turned our state institutions into sleepy watchmen?

We are all in this. Some dig with excavators, others dig with policies. Some mine with their hands, others with their signatures. Some destroy with action, others destroy with silence. And then some of us simply cry on social media and move on.

Where are the traditional leaders whose stools were once rooted in ancestral lands? Where are the district and municipal leaders whose jurisdictions now resemble war zones? Where are the youth leaders, the student unions, the faith-based organisations?

We are watching the soul of Ghana get carved out one illegal pit at a time. And who are the real beneficiaries of our blood? What do we have to show for? Our gatekeepers, the very ones who should be speaking, rising, resisting have become too comfortable, too afraid or too compromised.

It is said that when the drums change, the dance must also change. But in Ghana, the music of greed plays louder than the drumbeat of responsibility.

We need national awakening not just policies, not just committees, not just slogans. We need a movement of conscience.

We need schools teaching children to love the land. We need churches and mosques preaching about environmental stewardship. We need the media to stay awake, to keep the pressure on. We need citizens who will refuse to be used by foreigners mining activities that cost us our rivers. We need leaders who will choose legacy over loot.

This is not just about water bodies and cocoa farms. It is about the soul of a nation.
It is about whether we can look our children in the eye and say: “We fought for your tomorrow.”

We may be broken but we are not beyond repair. The same hands that destroy can also rebuild. The same voices that are silent can roar. The same Ghana that stands mocked can rise again.

We must reach the point where we say: “Enough! not on our soil, not in our name.” The land has given us gold but what have we given it in return? Destruction, poison and silence?

Let this be our turning point, the moment when we stop waiting for someone else and we become the ones Ghana has been waiting for. Because if we don’t rise to protect the land, we will fall with it.

Adutwum picks up nomination forms for NPP flagbearer race

0

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially joined the race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidacy, picking up nomination forms to contest in the party’s flagbearer election slated for January 2026.

Dr. Adutwum, who served in former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government as Minister of Education, made the move as part of his bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

His decision adds to the growing list of contenders seeking to succeed the party’s current leadership.

The Bosomtwe Member of Parliament is widely known for his contributions to education reform, particularly in the areas of STEM advancement and secondary education expansion.

His entry into the flagbearer race is expected to spark significant debate within the party, with supporters touting his technocratic expertise and track record in public service.

Similarly, on August 13, more than 490 youth organisers of the party, including substantive and deputy youth leaders from constituencies across the country, picked up nomination forms for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primary in January 2026.

The group described Dr. Bawumia as the only candidate capable of securing victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.

Their endorsement follows a strategic meeting on July 29, 2025, where representatives from various constituencies cited his “exceptional leadership, proven track record, and vision for Ghana’s future” as reasons for their support.

Commercial drivers to stage street protest over deplorable Pokuase–Nsawam road

Some commercial drivers have planned to stage a street protest over the deplorable Pokuase-Nsawam section of the N4 highway that connects Accra to Kumasi and other areas in the middle belt of the country.

According to the drivers, they are giving a one-week ultimatum to the government to repair the deteriorated sections between Pokuase and Nsawam to make it motorable even while the contractor continues with the rehabilitation works else they will extend the street protest nationwide.

In a joint statement through their leadership in various transport unions such as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and allied operators, they said the busy stretch, which links Accra to the Eastern, Ashanti and northern regions, has become almost impassable and dangerous.

They argued that the road’s poor condition is inflating operational costs due to constant repairs, reduced vehicle lifespans and more frequent spare-parts replacement.

“This is not just a challenge for commercial transport operators, but for all motorists using this critical corridor,” the statement issued on Thursday, August 14, 2025 said. “It is disrupting daily life and economic activities.”

The unions claimed they have already met with the Minister of Roads and Highways, who promised to fix the road within six weeks. However, they stressed that this deadline has passed without visible progress.

To them, if the ministry fails to act within the next seven days, their members will park their vehicles and stage a nationwide protest “until our concerns are addressed”.

The operators are calling on all affected motorists, commuters and residents to join the planned protest, describing it as a civic duty to pressure authorities into urgent action.

“Ghana Entertainment Will Remain Behind”- Nosa Rex Slams Ghana TV Station For Piracy

  • Rex expressed frustration in an emotional Instagram video regarding intellectual property rights violations.
  • He emphasized that unauthorized film airing is a serious offense, not a minor issue.
  • Rex highlighted that such violations undermine the film industry’s foundation.

In a heartfelt and emotionally charged Instagram video, Rex did not hold back his frustration over what he described as a blatant violation of intellectual property rights. He lamented that the unauthorized airing of films is not just a minor offense but a serious act that undermines the very foundation of the film industry. According to him, every production is the result of months sometimes years of planning, creativity, and financial investment.

Rex explained that behind every movie are teams of actors, directors, writers, crew members, and producers who pour their energy, time, and skills into bringing a vision to life. When these works are broadcast without consent, he said, it strips creators of the recognition and financial returns they deserve.

He further stressed that such actions discourage investors from supporting future projects, as the risk of losing revenue to piracy or unauthorized use is high. For him, this is not simply about money, but also about respect for the artistry and effort behind filmmaking. Rex called on both fans and industry stakeholders to take the issue seriously, urging them to support legal viewing platforms.

His message was clear: protecting creative work is essential to sustaining the growth of the movie industry.

“Ghana TV station, Ghana TV Station. The TV station wey dey show our film for free. Na Ogun wey go kpai all of una. Ghana entertainment will continue to be behind. As e be say nobody wan get sense tell una say that thing wey una dey no good. I’m using this opportunity to call out all of Ghana TV stations. You guys are all stupid. No disrespect to my fans, you guys know that I love you but e don dey too much. Enough is Enough. I just released Prince of Peace, una don stream am. Why?”

Ghana Pushes Jobs to Forefront as Youth Workforce Swells

Thomas Nyarko Ampem
Thomas Nyarko Ampem

Ghana’s government declared labor market reforms a top priority as new projections reveal 10 million citizens will enter the workforce by 2040.

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem issued the warning at the World Bank’s ninth Ghana Economic Update launch in Accra, stressing unemployment risks undermining recent economic gains.

“Unemployment and underemployment represent a potential powder keg,” Ampem told policymakers and development partners. He cited rapid urbanization and limited economic transformation as pressure points.

With 58% of Ghana’s projected 45 million population under 30 by 2040, job creation lags far behind demand. The government is now channeling over GH¢564 million into skills programs like ‘Adwumawura’ apprenticeships and the ‘One Million Coders’ initiative.

Economic improvements offer a foundation. Inflation has halved to 12.1% since January, interest rates fell, and the cedi strengthened.

Ampem credited President John Mahama’s focus on “decent and dignifying jobs” through private sector collaboration. Further indirect employment is expected from infrastructure and agriculture investments under the ‘Big Push’ and 24-Hour Economy programmes.

The World Bank’s labor-focused analysis arrives as Ghana drafts its 2026 budget and a presidential development plan. Ampem confirmed the Finance Ministry’s new Real Sector and Research divisions will prioritize the report’s recommendations. “We remain committed to consensus-based solutions,” he added, referencing March’s National Economic Dialogue.

Rap Fada says he was battling depression during that point in his life Rap Fada says he was battling depression during that point in his life

Ghanaian musician Rap Fada has shared how he battled depression and suicidal tendencies at a point in his career over his songs not being profitable enough.

The artiste, known for hits like “Style Biaa Bi,” shared in an interview with Bryt TV that at his lowest point, he contemplated suicide after his music stopped gaining traction.

Rap Fada explained that his habit of appearing in just boxer shorts, which sparked ridicule online, was unintentional and was due to his severe mental health struggles.

Akwaboah advised me to stop walking around with only boxers – Rap Fada

He admitted feeling abandoned by the industry during his crisis, with no support system to turn to.

“Walking about in boxers was not intentional; it was something I was dealing with.

“I was actually going through depression. I even wanted to take my life at one point. Because my music wasn’t hitting. I was frustrated. And there was no one to help me out,” he said.

He added that his situation was so dire that he couldn’t even record new songs because he was financially handicapped.

“There was a time I was always home, and I couldn’t go out unless necessary. There was no money. I couldn’t even go to the studio to record songs,” he said.

‘From dawn raid to helping with investigation to arraignment’

Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has called out the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over the arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuase.

In a series of posts shared on Facebook on August 13, 2025, Professor Kwaku Asare, who is widely known as Kwaku Azar, raised a number of issues with the NPP activist’s arrest.

Police confirm arrest of NPP’s Sir Obama Pokuase

He asserted that the Ghana Police Service was not being consistent in its arrest of Sir Obama Pokuase.

“From dawn raid to ‘helping with investigation’ to arraignment — Mr IGP, the math isn’t mathing. GOGO wasn’t born yesterday,” he wrote in one of the posts.

He also questioned the nature of the arrest of the activist, saying, “Thanks for the update, police, but why the dawn arrest if Sir Obama is only assisting investigations?”

The legal luminary indicated that the arrest of the NPP supporter was unwarranted, arguing that a mere statement by people does not warrant arrests.

“In a constitutional order, arrest is not the reflexive answer to unpopular speech. The due process protections, the presumption of innocence, and the right to liberty require that security agencies act with restraint, precision, and proportionality.

“Enforcement should target only speech that is truly hateful, threatening, or inciting unlawful acts — speech that poses a tangible risk to the safety of persons or the security of the State. Disrespectful, distasteful, or crude remarks, however unpalatable, do not meet this threshold and should be countered by rebuttal, civic education, or social disapproval, not the heavy hand of arrest,” he wrote.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Police Service, ACP Grace Ansah Akrofi, Sir Obama Pokuase’s arrest is in connection with the sharing of videos and images on social media in which some individuals are openly seen brandishing illegally acquired weapons.

“The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with other security agencies, has arrested Mr Daniel Adomako, known on social media as ‘Sir Obama Pokuase’, earlier today.

“His arrest is part of ongoing intelligence-led operations by the Police and other security agencies aimed at dismantling networks involved in the illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons. He is assisting investigations into some images and videos he circulated on social media depicting individuals openly brandishing these illegally acquired sophisticated weapons,” the police said.

The statement added that the operation has been ongoing for some weeks and has led to the retrieval of a substantial number of illegal arms and ammunition.

Nananom, Anuanom, Nnamfonom, and Yaanom:

While reading the Kevin Taylor case this morning, GOGO was struck by these words expressed by Justice Tanko Amadu.

“My Lords, before us is an application, which triggers a careful consideration of two pertinent aspects of our national lives — the adherence to the due process of law, and the respect for the authority of the court. The procedure to enforcing the latter requires adherence to the principles of the former. Ours is not a dictatorial setting but is procedurally defined, as it is underpinned by respect for the rights of all persons, including accused persons or Respondents to any process of the court alleging contempt.”

Those words resonate even more today in light of the dawn arrest of Sir-Obama, editor of Pokuase Mail, for an as-yet unspecified offence.

If one is to believe reports circulating on social media, always a hazardous proposition, the episode once again highlights a recurring challenge in our national life: the balance between safeguarding the constitutional freedoms that are the lifeblood of our democracy and protecting public order.

The principles that Justice Tanko enunciated in the Taylor case applies with equal, if not greater, force to the conduct of our police and national security agencies when confronted with speech that is offensive, unsettling, or injurious to sensibilities.

The mode of arrest is not a mere procedural nicety; it is a substantive guarantee that the coercive powers of the State are exercised only within the guardrails of law. Where there is no risk of flight, destruction of evidence, or imminent danger to the public, the preferred approach should be to invite the person to assist with investigations, rather than storming their home at dawn as if they were armed robbers or looters.

Such heavy-handed tactics, when used on mere suspects in speech-related matters, undermine public trust and create the appearance of intimidation rather than justice.

In that same case, Justice Tanko quoted an English judge who observed:

“Every sane person abuses his power from time to time, but a judge has many more opportunities of doing this than most other people. One unfair remark by one judge can bring the judiciary as a whole into disrepute, just as a few unruly and bad-mannered students can give the young people of today a bad name. In each case the percentage is tiny but the harm is done just the same.”

What is true of one judge is even more true of the police or national security. One reckless raid — one dawn storming of a home without clear justification — can bring an entire security institution into disrepute.

The percentage of such incidents may be small, but the damage to public trust is immense and lasting. In an age where images and videos travel instantly, one misjudged operation can erase years of painstaking community relations work.

In a constitutional order, arrest is not the reflexive answer to unpopular speech. The due process protections, the presumption of innocence, and the right to liberty require that security agencies act with restraint, precision, and proportionality.

Enforcement should target only speech that is truly hateful, threatening, or inciting unlawful acts — speech that poses a tangible risk to the safety of persons or the security of the State.

Disrespectful, distasteful, or crude remarks, however unpalatable, do not meet this threshold and should be countered by rebuttal, civic education, or social disapproval, not the heavy hand of arrest.

We must also acknowledge the increasing incidence of uncivil discourse in our public life. Far too many people now reach for needless insults as their first and only rhetorical tool, sometimes because they see such behaviour rewarded with attention, notoriety, or even political capital.

Much of the rich debates that we once witnessed on platforms such as Okyeame and Ghanaweb now seem to be giving way to high-sounding insults — empty of substance but loud enough to dominate the space.

This trend not only debases our national conversation but risks creating a perverse incentive structure where coarseness is a shortcut to relevance.

Hateful speech, especially when aimed at individuals or groups with hostility and prejudice, adds little of value to public discourse. It corrodes trust, deepens divisions, and distracts from the constructive exchange of ideas that strengthens democratic governance.

Civil discourse, in contrast, enriches debate, sharpens policy, and builds a culture in which disagreement is not a licence for dehumanisation.

The President is not just an old Vandal who treasures free speech; he is also a media man who has, time without number, highlighted the importance of allowing free expression.

National Security must take a cue from His Excellency: the State’s coercive power should not be the instrument for settling scores over words that offend, but the shield that protects lawful expression, even when it stings.

A society committed to these ideals must be willing to ostracise those whose only weapon is insult, while preserving the dignity of individuals and the integrity of our national conversation.

Security agencies must act not as arbiters of taste but as guardians of constitutional order — intervening only when speech crosses the legal line into criminality, and doing so with procedures that respect the rights of all, including the most intemperate speaker. That is the true measure of a free society.

The World Bank is projecting a 0.6 percent surge in Ghana's GDP The World Bank is projecting a 0.6 percent surge in Ghana’s GDP

The World Bank has projected that Ghana could gain additional revenue equivalent to at least 0.6% of GDP in 2025 if the government fully implements the revenue measures outlined in the 2025 budget.

According to the World Bank’s latest Ghana Economic Update report, the projected increase aligns with the targets of the IMF-supported Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

Speaking at the launch of the report in Accra, World Bank Country Director Robert Taliercio said full enforcement of the tax exemption law and the creation of a comprehensive tax expenditure register would enhance transparency and accountability in the country’s revenue mobilisation.

The World Bank also urged the government to strengthen the Ghana Revenue Authority’s capacity to roll out the Integrated Tax Administration System and conduct risk-based audits to improve tax compliance.

Wilful loan defaulters to face public naming and borrowing ban under new BoG rules

In addition, it called for the full adoption of Public Financial Management (PFM) systems such as the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) and the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) across all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), as well as metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs).

The report further recommended integrating all spending accounts into the Treasury Single Account to enhance transparency, efficiency, and expenditure control.

“Improving tax administration, broadening the tax base, and strengthening public financial management will be critical to achieving sustainable fiscal consolidation,” the report stated.

‘Release the ball on time’ – Ex-English manager on Kudus’ performance against PSG

Glenn Hoddle is a sports pundit on TNT Sports TV Glenn Hoddle is a sports pundit on TNT Sports TV

Former English footballer and manager Glenn Hoddle has urged Ghanaian attacker Mohammed Kudus to give consistent performances in order to excel at Tottenham Hotspurs.

According to him, Kudus plays brilliantly, especially in terms of dribbling past his opponents to win fouls and push the team forward.

However, he believes that sometimes the Black Stars forward holds onto the ball for too long, which may affect the effectiveness of his play in the future.

Speaking on TNT Sports after Tottenham Hotspur lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain, Hoddle advised Kudus to be quick in releasing the ball and to be consistent with his performance.

Why Kudus Mohammed and Nuno Mendes are trending After UEFA Super Cup

“He has such good talent, quick feet, and you see his qualities there. The added ingredient for him as a player is consistency. A lot of my West Ham fans, I’ve got quite a few, have said to me, ‘Thank you for taking him, Glenn.’ The first year, I thought he was excellent; the second year, they’re telling me he didn’t do so well. But he looks like he’s got a lot of potential, I’ve got to say.

“Sometimes I look at dribblers, and I like what they do. As a dribbler and a player, I look at whether they can dribble and play with their head up. That is the key for me. Can you also play with your head up? And that’s the next progression for me. And I think if he does, he could be a real asset for Tottenham,” he added.

Kudus and his Tottenham Hotspur teammates suffered a heartbreak night after missing out on lifting the 2025 UEFA Super Cup, following a 4-3 defeat to PSG on penalties following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

African Youth Lag Behind In Political, Civic Participation – Afrobarometer

0

African youth

African youth are trailing behind their elders in political and civic participation, a new Afrobarometer flagship report has revealed.

The largest generational disparity is in voting, where the youth trail their elders by a striking 18 percentage points.

The report noted that African youth (aged 18-35) are less likely than older generations to attend a community meeting (-12 percentage points), contact traditional leaders (-10 points), contact local government councillors (-10 points), feel close to a political party (-8 points), and join with others to raise an issue (-8 points) .

“The most striking deficit is in voter turnout (-18 percentage points).  Senegal (-29 percentage points), Cameroon (-28 points), and Zimbabwe (-28 points) exhibit the largest disparities in voting rates by age,” it said.

It further noted that attendance at community meetings saw the widest gaps in Côte d’Ivoire (-28 points), Zambia (-26 points), and Botswana (-24 points).

“When it comes to direct engagement with local government officials, the largest disparities are in Lesotho (-24 points), Zambia (-20 points), Guinea (-16 points), and Kenya (-16 points),” it added.

According to the report, the youth are more likely than their elders to participate in protests in many African countries, although rates in 16 countries differ by no more than 1 percentage point.

Tunisia stands out with the largest gap in protest rates (+17 points), followed by Sudan (+9 points) and São Tomé and Príncipe (+7 points).

The report, the second in an annual series on high-priority topics, draws on data spanning the past decade, including the latest round of nationally representative surveys in 39 countries, representing the views of more than three-fourths of the continent’s population. The analysis focuses on 10 key indicators of citizen engagement.

These generational gaps underscore the challenges of political participation on the world’s most youthful continent if governments fail to create channels for meaningful engagement.

The new flagship report, based on 53,444 face-to-face interviews, is accompanied by country scorecards on citizen engagement that provide an at-a-glance snapshot of key indicators of citizen participation for each of the surveyed countries.

‘Selective Justice’ Damaging Ghana’s Police Reputation

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticized the leadership of the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, questioning his integrity and accusing him of engaging in selective justice as per reports from MyNewsGH.

In a statement, Nana Boakye argued that under Yohuno’s leadership, the police have lost their respect among the public due to their discriminatory approach in handling crimes.

He stated that the police’s failure to address certain high-profile incidents, particularly the violence in Ablekuma North and the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash, has raised concerns.

“The police have not been able to arrest anyone concerning the Ablekuma North constituency violence,” he stated, suggesting that some individuals, particularly from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have not faced investigation, despite serious accusations.

He pointed out that while NPP members have been arrested in relation to such matters, others—such as NDC communicators who have made controversial statements about the crash—have not been questioned.

Nana Boakye also mentioned the case of the Ghanaian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, who suggested sabotage in the crash but has yet to be invited by the police for questioning.

“Even Sansa Dale, who falsely claimed to be a doctor, has not been invited by the police,” he added, revealing what he perceives as the inconsistent and politically motivated nature of the investigations.

The NPP official concluded that under Yohuno’s tenure, the police force has failed to uphold the mandate impartially, calling it a “disappointing” period for the institution.

Why are we honouring foreign religions at the expense of traditional religions? – Asiedu Nketiah asks

0

The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has questioned why Ghana is giving more recognition to foreign religions while neglecting traditional religion.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Nketiah said it appeared imported religions had taken over the country, as if Ghana had no tradition or cultural roots.

He explained that although he is a Christian and a Presbyterian, the laws of Ghana do not make the country exclusively Christian or Muslim.

According to him, the constitution clearly states that Ghana is a secular state where everyone is free to practise their religion and culture.

Mr. Nketiah expressed concern that the state was now moving towards honouring foreign religions to the exclusion of traditional ones.

He said this was worrying, especially when chiefs and rulers were also turning to foreign religions.

He was worried about how some people claimed to deliver prophecies and play the role of God.

In an interview with UTV Ghana, Acquah emphasized that the work of a Member of Parliament (MP) is just as significant as that of the President, and thus the families of MPs who die in service should be afforded the same level of recognition and support.

“Ernest Kumi also deserves such treatment. He is even yet to be buried,” Acquah stated, highlighting the urgency of acknowledging the late MP’s contributions and sacrifices.

Acquah’s plea is rooted in the belief that the children of Kumi, who left behind a legacy of service, should not be overlooked.

The proposed support fund, which was initially meant for the families of eight victims who perished in the crash, would be a fitting way to honor Kumi’s family as well.

The MP further underlined the broader tragedy of the accident, which also claimed the lives of 16 children on the Kumasi-Accra highway, adding that the government must remain mindful of the need to support the bereaved families.

Advans Ghana Savings and Loans has released its financial results for the first half of 2025, posting a remarkable 400% increase in profit year-on-year.

The surge in profitability — from GH¢5.4 million in H1 2024 to GH¢23.1 million in H1 2025 – is attributed to the successful execution of Advans Ghana’s accelerated growth strategy, disciplined cost management, and strengthened operational efficiency.

Strong lending activity fuels growth

A key driver of this performance was the institution’s aggressive lending strategy, particularly to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

In the first half of the year, Advans Ghana disbursed over GH¢408 million in loans to more than 7,500 MSMEs, marking a 59% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

This momentum propelled a 72% year-on-year growth in the Gross Loan Portfolio, which closed at GHS 473 million by the end of June 2025. Importantly, 37% of these loans were issued to first-time borrowers, reflecting Advans Ghana’s mission to deepen financial access and inclusion.

Robust revenue and asset performance

Revenue growth was equally strong:

  • Net interest income climbed by 59%, driven by higher loan volumes and improved yield management.
  • Non-funded income (including fees and commissions) increased by 20%, reflecting higher client activity and cross-product engagement.

Total assets grew to GH¢627.7 million, representing a 46% year-on-year increase, a testament to balance sheet strength and sustained shareholder confidence.

“This achievement has been made possible by the exceptional dedication and hard work of every member of our team. Their collective efforts have reinforced our leadership in financial inclusion and significantly extended our outreach — ensuring that more entrepreneurs across Ghana gain access to the financial tools and support they need to thrive.

“We are proud to be delivering on our mission to empower businesses, create jobs, and improve livelihoods — driving real economic and social progress in the communities we serve. We are confident that we will continue to build a more inclusive financial future for all, while delivering even greater value to our stakeholders,” Guillaume Valence, MD/CEO of Advans Ghana, said.

Deposit growth signals public confidence

Client deposits also saw significant growth, increasing 57percent year-on-year, as more Ghanaians entrusted their savings to Advans. The institution’s expanding digital footprint played a key role, with digital transactions rising by 40percent, thanks to continuous enhancements to the mobile banking experience.

A major milestone in this journey was the successful launch of the MyAdvans App, which allows clients to conveniently manage their accounts, access account information, and transact securely from anywhere in Ghana. Advans Ghana now serves over 142,000 active clients nationwide, with a growing presence in urban, peri-urban, and rural communities.

Advancing gender inclusion

True to its inclusive mandate, Advans Ghana continues to champion women’s financial empowerment. Women-led businesses accounted for 61percent of total clients served. Through its flagship AdvansHER initiative, the institution delivered financial literacy training to over 100 women entrepreneurs across the country during the reporting period.
