‘Is he normal?’ – Prophet Uche sparks outrage on social media after declaring new Pope will die in 4 years

Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche and Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche and Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV

Ghanaian Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche, the founder of Reign House Chapel International, has stirred outrage on social media following his controversial prophecy that the newly elected Pope, Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV, will not live beyond four years.

According to the prophet, the papal position following the death of Pope Francis was originally destined for a black man. However, he claimed that the election was manipulated in favour of Robert Prevost.

Weeks before the conclave, Prophet Uche had made similar statements. Following the election of Pope Leo XIV, he reiterated his stance during a sermon to his congregation.

“Let me say this today, I was there this afternoon around 5, and Long John sent me a video, he told me, ‘Papa, what you said has come to pass, they have chosen a white pope,’ and he showed me the video.”

He continued, “Listen, when did I say this? A week ago. I said a black man would be the pope, but they wouldn’t give it to him. And the one they give it to will live only three to four years. If I’m truly a man of God, write it down. If the new pope lives beyond four years at the Vatican, then I am not Prophet Uche.”

His comments have since triggered a wave of criticism online, with many questioning the legitimacy and relevance of such predictions.

One user wrote, “Is he normal? Ghana dey enjoy concert too much.”

Another added, “Small juju you’re doing and you think you’re more powerful than the Roman Catholic Church?”

One commenter bluntly stated, “I don’t operate in the realm, but this is nonsense.”

Others questioned the negativity often associated with such prophecies, Why is it always doom and death? Don’t they ever see anything positive?”

“Why is it always Africa where these things happen?”

Some even called for regulation, “Can they pass a law that if a prophecy doesn’t come true, the prophet goes to jail? I think that would help.”

Another added, “There’s something wrong with this ecclesia community of pastors. No wonder I can’t remember the last time I went to church. Focus on your community, whether it’s going to be here for another 2,000 years.”

‘Dirty Blackmailer’; you must be impeached

Blakk Rasta [L] and A Plus Blakk Rasta [L] and A Plus

Popular radio presenter Abubakar Ahmed, popularly known as Blakk Rasta, has called for the impeachment of the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, after the lawmaker publicly admitted to accepting money to halt a campaign advocating for the decentralization of waste management in Ghana.

The controversial musician-turned-politician revealed in a media interview that the founder of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Joseph Siaw Agyapong, compensated him financially to stop the campaign, which would have directly impacted the company’s operations.

A Plus disclosed that his campaign was launched in retaliation after Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana, allegedly defamed him on Metro TV—a media outlet also owned by Siaw Agyapong.

“So this man puts my photo on TV and says, ‘A Plus, you have taken GHC250,000…’ He said a lot. If you say you are NPP, and this money is being given to NPP parliamentarians, why aren’t you talking about that? I didn’t respond; I just let it go. But then, on Monday, I started the campaign ‘Waste Management Must Be Decentralised’ because Zoomlion owns Metro TV. If you use Metro TV to attack me, Paul, you don’t have anything of value for me to attack—except your wife,” A Plus stated during an appearance on Channel 1 TV’s Upside Down program.

“I launched the campaign to attack his boss, Zoomlion. I invested time in it. You see what’s happening with the Youth Employment issues? I had time, and I was going to deal with them. Zoomlion called me several times, but I wasn’t answering. Everyone in the country was calling, saying Zoomlion wanted to speak with me, but I ignored them. Paul, ask your boss what happened when he finally met me. I didn’t sue you for defamation. Have you noticed that I stopped the waste management campaign? That’s because his boss paid me to stop, in response to your misconduct on Metro TV,” he added.

According to A Plus, Siaw Agyapong paid him “good money” to stop writing about him on social media.

Commenting on the matter during his show on 3FM, Blakk Rasta strongly condemned A Plus’ conduct, labeling him a blackmailer unfit to serve as a Member of Parliament.

“I am truly disappointment. A Plus is a brother of mine, I don’t know how to handle this but I will handle it. This guy is nothing but a dirty blackmailer. So you are no longer fighting for the people, you are fighting your own battles blackmailing people. So the decentralization of the waste management thing he was talking about, he did not mean it. He was doing it to blackmail a certain guy who he knew would run to him and pay him money which he will selfishly put in his pocket and forget. You are blackmailing people so that you get a certain attention. This guy does not deserve to be an MP. Nobody deserve to be an MP when their penchant is blackmailing.

“Paul Adom-Otchere hurt you and you got angry. As a lawmaker, what should you do? You’re in Parliament to make laws, yet you chose to act unlawfully and pursue personal vengeance by targeting someone’s business. And now, you’re not even ashamed to admit that you took money. That’s bribery. He should be impeached immediately. I’m disappointed in A Plus. We cannot allow this. If an MP confesses that his campaign had nothing to do with the public good, but only his personal grievances, then maybe I need to write to the Speaker of Parliament to draw attention to this serious matter.”

Don’t praise Mahama for low-hanging fruit; at UPSA, he would be a struggling student – Lecturer

0

President John Dramani Mahama [L] and Ishaq Ibrahim President John Dramani Mahama [L] and Ishaq Ibrahim

A Lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Ishak Ibrahim, has stated that there is no need to praise President John Dramani Mahama for his accomplishments in his first 120 days in office, as most of them were “low-hanging fruits.”

President Mahama, delivering a national address on Wednesday, May 7, to give an account of his first 120 days in office, highlighted the progress made so far, describing it as evidence of a new governance approach rooted in transparency, accountability, efficiency, and urgency.

The President noted that his administration had fulfilled all initial commitments made within the 120-day period and urged citizens to rally around a common purpose to confront national challenges and build a more prosperous and united future.

“We laid out a social contract with you, the people of Ghana, with specific promises for this critical initial period. Tonight, I’m pleased to report that we have fulfilled these promises — from forming a lean government and establishing a robust code of conduct to taking decisive action to scrap burdensome taxes, initiating inquiries into past wrongdoings, launching major job creation programs, tackling illegal mining, reviving our environment, promoting our tourism and export sectors, streamlining scholarships, supporting vulnerable populations, and holding our security agencies accountable,” he stated.

However, speaking on Metro TV on Friday, May 9, 2025, Ishak Ibrahim, a scholar and politician with sympathies toward the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said that judging by evaluations from some individuals and institutions, President Mahama could be described as a struggling student.

“IMANI Ghana, for example, gave President Mahama 50%. Joy News gave him 52%, and others gave 48%. You call upon me as an academic to pass my judgment. President Mahama says 100% — that is the assessment of an ambitious student. But if you look at the objective assessments by others, like IMANI Ghana, this is a struggling student.

“A score of 50% is a struggling student. If he were a student at UPSA, one mark less and he would be a re-sit student. One mark less is a ‘D’ — and a ‘D’ means a re-sit. So, according to IMANI Ghana, he’s just barely passed. We can call him a struggling student.

“I said some of these promises were low-hanging fruits. You cannot score highly for simply resolving low-hanging fruits, such as appointing a cabinet within 14 days. Should we award high marks for that? Even with the abolition of the E-Levy and Betting Tax — again, these are low-hanging fruits. Abolishing is easy, but when it comes to the heavy lifting, the government has run away from it.”

The Ghana U20 national team will take on Egypt’s U20 national team in the quarter-finals of the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The Black Satellites must prepare and gear up for what would be a tough encounter against the host nation.

The Black Satellites are in the last eight stage of the 2025 U20 AFCON after topping Group C at the end of the group phase.

The Satellites drew 1-1 against DR Congo in their opening game before beating Senegal and Central African Republic with a 1-0 scoreline in the second and final games, respectively.

Coach of the side, Desmond Ofei and his team will hope to get a win over Egypt on Monday to advance to the semi-final.

‘Jesus, mothers actually go through a lot’ – MzGee reflects on pain of childbirth

0

Television host MzGee has shared a raw and emotional account of the pain and sacrifice women endure during childbirth, urging people to recognize and appreciate the immense strength that comes with motherhood.

Speaking on her lifestyle show Gee O’Clock, MzGee recounted her own experience—particularly the moment she saw the size of the epidural needle used during her labour. The sight of the needle, which she described as “epic,” brought everything into perspective.

“When I saw that needle the gentleman had pulled and said, ‘This is the epic epidural needle,’ I said, ‘Jesus Christ, I can’t believe that I had that needle go behind me—or that I had that needle in my back just a few months ago.’ No wonder they never show us that needle.”

She reflected on the awe-inspiring endurance of mothers, urging viewers to show greater appreciation for their own mothers, especially on the eve of Mother’s Day.

“If you haven’t called your mother in a long time… if you haven’t shown your mother enough love… this is one for you. When I saw that, I was like, Jesus, mothers—women—actually go through a lot,” she said, emphasizing the importance of respecting and cherishing mothers for all they go through.

MzGee’s journey into motherhood was not without its challenges. She spoke candidly about the discomforts of pregnancy, recalling how she struggled with basic tasks like applying lotion to her feet. She also shared her emotional experience of enduring heartburn and other pregnancy-related discomforts, including an aversion to foods she once loved.

“The process of pregnancy… it might even exceed nine months, going to 10 months… Have you thought about the fact that that journey to giving birth is a journey of life and death?” MzGee asked, acknowledging the risks many women face during pregnancy and childbirth. “Not everybody is able to complete that nine-month journey. Not everybody is able to return home with their baby.”

Her experience with childbirth was equally harrowing. MzGee recalled the moment she received the epidural, nervously preparing for the procedure as a first-time mother. Despite the fear, she chose to take the epidural, which numbed her from the waist down during delivery. She described the overwhelming relief she felt when her baby was finally born.

However, the joy of holding her newborn was short-lived. Just days after delivery, a doctor informed her that her haemoglobin levels had dropped dangerously low—to 5—prompting an emergency blood transfusion.

“Psychologically, my mind began to go off the roof. What is happening? What is happening? By the end of that day, my blood pressure had shot through the roof,” she explained. “That is what we go through to birth a child.”

MzGee announced the arrival of her baby in January 2025.

DVLA boss engages Minerals Commission on excavator tracking measures

The Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, has held strategic discussions with the Excavator Tracking Team of the Minerals Commission in Accra to explore collaborative efforts in regulating the use of excavators in Ghana’s mining sector.

The high-level meeting, held at the Minerals Commission headquarters, forms part of broader efforts to tackle illegal mining and the environmental degradation associated with the unregulated use of heavy-duty equipment.

This engagement follows the formation of a ministerial task force by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, mandated to develop a framework for the registration, tracking, and monitoring of excavators nationwide.

During the discussions, the two institutions identified significant gaps in excavator registration. While the Minerals Commission has systems for tracking equipment used by concession holders, many excavators—whether owned by individuals, dealers, or small-scale miners—remain unregistered with the DVLA, despite the Authority being the only body legally mandated to register all vehicles and heavy machinery in the country.

Mr. Kotey emphasized the need to integrate the DVLA’s role into excavator regulation, noting that unregistered equipment poses a major challenge to monitoring and enforcement.

He assured the Commission of the DVLA’s readiness to deploy mobile service teams to mining areas to register all operational excavators, thereby enabling better oversight and control.

In a key policy shift, the DVLA and the Minerals Commission also agreed that, going forward, all excavators imported into the country will be registered at the port of entry before being dispatched to their destinations. This move aims to prevent unregistered excavators from bypassing regulatory processes and proceeding directly to mining sites.

The DVLA boss reiterated the Authority’s commitment to supporting national efforts to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable mining practices.

He emphasized that strong inter-agency collaboration is vital to addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining and equipment misuse.

The meeting was facilitated by Dr. Sylvester Akpah, a Computer Science Engineer from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), and was attended by members of the DVLA management team and technical staff from the Minerals Commission.

Rejecting the President’s MMDCE nominations threatens development- Linda Ocloo

0

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has expressed worry over the growing trend of rejecting Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees, warning that such actions threaten socio-economic development in local communities.

Speaking at a recent press briefing following the rejection of Kenneth Kabu Kanor, the President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive position in Ada East Assembly, she stressed that proactive engagement and consensus-building are essential in ensuring smooth confirmations, which in turn enable effective administration and local development.

“If you delay the confirmation, you delay development, you delay progress, sometimes recruitment processes are stalled because the DCE is yet to be confirmed. If the position is vacant, those lobbying for jobs might bypass the due channels and resort to informal means, creating room for bias and inefficiency”,she lamented.

She urged assembly members not to allow personal grievances or political aspirations to cloud their judgment.

“If someone has offended you, find a way to resolve it. Don’t work against the nominee simply because you think it will get you appointed instead. That mindset will only hurt the community”, she noted.

She also hinted at possible changes in the way government appointees are considered.

“If we notice that government appointees are not contributing meaningfully or are part of the obstruction, we’ll start looking outside the box,” she warned, adding that the sole business of appointees at this stage should be to support the confirmation of the President’s nominee Let’s not let politics get in the way of development”, she added.

US donates $6m worth of armoured vehicles to GAF to boost national, regional security

Madam Virginia Palmer, and Dr Edward Omane Boamah on the red carpet Madam Virginia Palmer, and Dr Edward Omane Boamah on the red carpet

The United States Government has donated 14 mine-resistant, ambush-protected armored personnel carriers (APCs), valued at over $6 million, to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The official handover, which took place on Wednesday at Burma Camp in Accra, symbolized the deepening of the U.S.-Ghana security partnership and demonstrated the bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.

The Puma M36 vehicles, designed for enhanced troop protection and mobility, are expected to significantly strengthen the operational readiness of the GAF, particularly in counter-terrorism and border security operations.

The APCs are intended to boost the country’s capacity to respond to emerging threats and safeguard its territorial integrity.

More than 40 Ghanaian soldiers have undergone comprehensive training in operating and maintaining the APCs over the past four weeks.

Madam Virginia Palmer, U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, who led the American delegation at the brief ceremony, said the gesture was more than a transfer of military equipment, it symbolized values, cooperation, and the deeply held mutual respect that defines the decades-long relationship between the U.S. and Ghana.

Ambassador Palmer noted the important role Ghana plays in regional security, particularly along its northern border, and expressed optimism that the vehicles would enhance the country’s security efforts.

She added that Ghana’s contributions to peacekeeping missions and multinational military exercises, such as Flintlock and African Lion, underscore its position as a reliable partner in advancing global peace and stability.

“These APCs support the GAF’s mission of ensuring peace and border integrity, which makes both Ghana and the United States safer,” she remarked, adding that, “They are part of a broader commitment that includes continued training and joint operations.”

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister of Defence, expressed profound appreciation to the U.S. government for the donation, describing it as both generous and strategic.

He stated, “This occasion is not just a symbol of the enduring partnership between our two countries; it is a tangible expression of our shared commitment to peace, stability, and security within Ghana and across the West African sub-region.”

The Minister also praised the professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces, urging them to carry out their duties with renewed confidence and a heightened sense of responsibility.

Over the years, the U.S. government has provided various forms of logistical and operational support to the GAF, including boats, mobile field hospitals, and infrastructure to enhance Ghana’s defense capacity.

The event was attended by senior Ghanaian military officials, representatives of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), and members of the diplomatic community.

The donation coincided with Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), which marks the end of World War II in Europe, a symbolic alignment underscoring the U.S.’s continued commitment to global peace and security.

Musician Kingdom Rascal launches foundation to support vulnerable families

Her Royal Highness Pobat Yenuloom Tintangobir aka Kingdom Rascal Her Royal Highness Pobat Yenuloom Tintangobir aka Kingdom Rascal

In a powerful and emotionally charged ceremony, Her Royal Highness Pobat Yenuloom Tintangobir I–known widely by her stage name Kingdom Rascal, officially launched the My Basic Needs Charity Foundation, a humanitarian initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable children and families across Ghana and the African diaspora.

Held with cultural fanfare and attended by dignitaries, traditional leaders, family, friends, and supporters from across continents, the inauguration marked not only the birth of a philanthropic foundation but a renewed call to action to address the socioeconomic challenges confronting rural and underserved communities.

In her moving inaugural speech, the newly crowned Paramount Queen Mother of the Bimobas, Mobas, and Gurmas in the Diaspora shared her deeply personal journey–one rooted in both royal heritage and real hardship.

Born in Nakpanduri in the Northeast Region of Ghana, Kingdom Rascal recounted a childhood marked by hunger, poverty, and perseverance.

“I know what it means to wake up hungry, to walk long distances barefoot just to receive an education,” she said, evoking a powerful connection with many in the audience.

Her rise–from a top student to a member of the Ghana Police Force, and eventually to a UK-based entrepreneur, nurse, evangelist, and Afro-conscious artist–is a testimony to resilience.

Despite her global travels and accomplishments, Kingdom Rascal declared that her heart has never left her people. Since 2010, she has worked quietly to feed, clothe, and empower children in need–efforts that now take a formal shape through My Basic Needs.

“The title of Queen Mother is not for personal glory,” she declared. “It is a commitment to serve, uplift, and empower my people. The challenges we face, poverty, division, lack of education, health disparities, and the loss of cultural identity–must not define us.”

The My Basic Needs Charity Foundation seeks to address these exact issues, starting with providing food, clothing, school supplies, and emotional support to children from underserved backgrounds.

With a strong emphasis on education, healthcare, and cultural preservation, the foundation will also empower women and youth–groups Kingdom Rascal passionately uplifted in her speech.

She also called for unity across borders and communities: “Whether you are Ghanaian, Nigerian, African, or European, stand with me. Let us invest in education, support our youth, preserve our traditions, and lift up those in need.”

A highlight of the launch was the tribute to Kingdom Rascal’s recent single titled ‘Mummy’ a heartfelt song dedicated to mothers and mother figures across the world.

The emotionally rich lyrics reflect her gratitude and admiration for the strength, sacrifices, and wisdom of women who raise families under challenging circumstances.

The song underscores the very mission of the foundation, celebrating the resilience of women while advocating for the support systems they often lack. “Mummy is not just a song, it’s a prayer, a tribute, and a promise,” she said. “It reminds us why our work matters.”

True to her name, Kingdom Rascal is not one to shy away from challenging the status quo. She explained the inspiration behind her stage name: “Rascal” represents her fearless commitment to truth.

Influenced by figures such as Jesus Christ, the prophet Elijah, and reggae icon Bob Marley, she uses music as a bold tool to expose injustice and inspire societal change.

“Throughout history, those who spoke truth were seen as troublemakers,” she explained. “But I believe that being a rascal for the Kingdom of God means having the courage to speak out and spark transformation.”

Now stepping fully into her dual role as cultural leader and activist artist, Kingdom Rascal’s message is clear: this is only the beginning. With My Basic Needs, she is building a movement rooted in love, faith, action, and legacy.

“This is our time,” she concluded. “This is our movement. This is our legacy.”

Where’s the $350m and $150m worth of cocaine Mahama described as high-profile busts?

0

Assin South MP, Reverend Ntim Fordjour Assin South MP, Reverend Ntim Fordjour

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Interior and Defence Committee, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has questioned the whereabouts of the cocaine President Mahama once described as part of a high-profile bust worth $350 million, seized in Takoradi—long before the recent cases currently in court.

On April 1, 2025, President Mahama ordered investigations into allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering linked to two suspicious flights that reportedly landed at Kotoka International Airport.

The directive followed a press conference by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, who raised concerns about the flights’ purpose and cargo.

In a Facebook post, President Mahama said he had directed the investigative agencies to collaborate with the MP and obtain relevant information from him to investigate the allegations swiftly.

“Government takes all allegations seriously,” President Mahama noted, adding, “To ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, I have directed all relevant investigative agencies to immediately and fully collaborate with the Honourable Member of Parliament so he can provide all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”

The President reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking, stating that Ghana must not be used as a transit or final destination for illegal drugs.

This directive comes on the heels of a recent high-profile drug bust by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), which seized drugs with an estimated street value of $350 million. This, the President said, reflects the government’s commitment to combat drug trafficking.

However, speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, May 9, 2025, Rev. Ntim Fordjour stated that so far, only the prosecution of the 82kg cocaine bust at the Swiss port is underway.

“So far, we have seen them arraign the culprits, and the court has granted them bail. But the question begging for an answer is: what about the one the President described as a high-profile bust? I mean the $350 million and $150 million busts in Takoradi, in which it was claimed the person behind the consignment was a former NDC parliamentary candidate? How come it is only the recent 89kg cocaine bust that is being prosecuted, but nobody has been arraigned for the $350 million and $150 million busts from long ago?”

Reverend Ntim Fordjour disclosed his intention to use legal processes to push for answers on the whereabouts of the large cocaine consignments.

“My lawyers—Atta Akyea, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, and Jeff Koranteng—are taking serious action regarding the $350 million and $150 million cocaine busts. I have spoken with my lawyers, and on this specific issue, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is filing a Right To Information (RTI) request to determine the whereabouts of the cocaine—a total worth of half a billion dollars. The government has initiated prosecution only in the small bust (89kg) but has remained silent on the high-profile cases. Who are the persons behind them? Where is the cocaine? The government is very quiet about this. We are filing an RTI on the issue.”

Using black smoke to signify failure not good for us

0

Veteran Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo Veteran Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has sparked reactions on social media after he expressed concerns over the Catholic Church’s traditional use of black smoke to signify an unsuccessful papal election.

In a video shared on Instagram, Kanayo questioned the symbolism behind the smoke signals used during the papal conclave, where black smoke represents failure to elect a pope, and white smoke signals success.

He argued that consistently associating “black” with failure reinforces subconscious racial bias.

“When they fail, it’s black smoke. When they succeed, it’s white smoke… This has been ingrained in the minds of the world that black is failure,” he said.

Kanayo suggested that the Church should consider alternative symbolism, proposing, for example, that blue smoke could be used to indicate that no pope has been elected, while white smoke continues to announce success. “Remove the black. It’s not good for us,” he added.

His remarks have sparked wide debate online, with some supporting the call to rethink the use of long-held symbols that could unintentionally perpetuate negative associations with the color black.

Others, however, point to the fact that black is also used within the Church in a different context, notably in clergy regalia, where it symbolizes humility, solemnity, and devotion.

Meanwhile, on May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This historic event marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy.

Pope Leo XIV was elected after four rounds of voting during the conclave that followed Pope Francis’s death on April 21, 2025. His election is seen as a continuation of Pope Francis’s progressive agenda, emphasizing social justice, immigration reform, and outreach to marginalized communities. In his first mass, he warned against prioritizing technology, wealth, and pleasure over faith.

Pope Leo XIV’s election breaks a longstanding tradition, as the Vatican had previously avoided appointing American popes due to geopolitical concerns.

His dual citizenship and extensive work in Latin America helped bridge this gap. He is the first pope from the Augustinian Order and the first from an English-speaking country since the 12th century.

His papal name honors Pope Leo XIII, known for advocating workers’ rights and social justice, signaling a commitment to similar values.

Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration mass is scheduled for May 18, 2025. His leadership is anticipated to focus on unity within the Church and addressing global challenges with compassion and humility.

Rejecting the President’s MMDCE nominations threatens development- Linda Ocloo

Where’s the $350m and $150m worth of cocaine Mahama described as a high-profile busts?

TEWU-GH clashes with TUC boss over reckless remarks about representation on University Council

0

TUC Secretary General, Joshua Ansah TUC Secretary General, Joshua Ansah

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has strongly criticised recent comments made by the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, regarding the union’s participation in university governing councils.

Speaking to Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah, Charles Arthur, Local Chairman of TEWU-GH at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), described Ansah’s comments as “biased” and uninformed.

Ansah had vowed to resist any attempt to grant TEWU-GH representation on the councils, a stance Arthur believes undermines fair representation and the principles of organised labour.

According to Arthur, Ansah’s position appears to ignore the fact that, as head of Organised Labour in addition to being TUC Secretary-General, he is expected to maintain neutrality in matters involving different unions.

Referencing Section 112 of Ghana’s Labour Act, Arthur explained that Organised Labour is part of the Tripartite Committee, which includes all recognised labour unions, employers’ associations, and the government.

As such, he said, Ansah should represent the collective interests of all unions, not just those affiliated with the TUC.

He further argued that TEWU-GH, which is not under the TUC umbrella, has a significantly larger membership than its counterpart, TEWU-TUC, particularly at KNUST—and thus deserves rightful representation on the university’s governing council.

Arthur urged Ansah to seek a better understanding of the ongoing tensions between TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC before making public declarations.

He warned that failure to recognise TEWU-GH on the councils, as mandated by law, could lead to serious unrest across the country’s universities, with KNUST being a potential flashpoint.

National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B)

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), has sounded a strong caution to President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on May 8, 2025, Nana B claimed that President Mahama thinks he has the undying support of Ghanaians because of his massive victory in the 2024 presidential election.

However, he said the recent #SavetheJudiciaryDemo shows that a cross section of the public is unhappy about some of the president’s actions.

“Truthfully, the way Ghanaians came out (for the demonstration) shows that His Excellency Mahama, wherever he is, needs to sit well.

“Ghanaians voted for you overwhelmingly, this is a fact, and we have accepted it. But if thousands of Ghanaians came out after 5 months to protest some of the things you are doing, that they are unhappy about, then you must be careful,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He added, “Don’t take the mandate of the people for granted. I think the margin of victory has gotten into his head, so he thinks he has some unwavering goodwill from the people… but he must know that Ghana was not sold to him.”

Samson Deen rallies NSA support as Ghana prepares to host historic Para Sports Festival

0

In a high-level engagement aimed at fostering national cooperation for disability sports, President of the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC) and the Ghana Paralympic Committee, Mr. Samson Deen, paid a strategic courtesy call on the new Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The meeting, held at the NSA headquarters, set the tone for a new era of collaboration ahead of Ghana’s hosting of two major para sports events: the AfPC Elective Congress and the first-ever Open Para Sports and Classification Festival, both slated for November 2025.

Mr. Deen used the occasion to highlight the significance of Ghana’s role in advancing para sports across Africa. He underscored the dire need for inclusive facilities, athlete development, and continental access to athlete classification.

“Africa’s para athletes are talented but structurally underserved. With Ghana taking the lead in hosting a continental classification festival, we’re not just creating opportunities — we’re correcting historic inequalities,” he stated.

The upcoming festival is expected to be a game-changer, providing athletes with international classification, a prerequisite for competing in global Paralympic events. Mr. Deen revealed that international classifiers and delegations from several countries have already been engaged, with diplomatic missions like the Spanish Embassy expressing enthusiastic support.

Mr. Deen also shared personal insights into the transformation of para sports in Ghana since his involvement in 2016, noting the shift from a personality-driven system to one that embraces fairness and community empowerment.

“This movement is no longer about individuals. It’s about systems that work, structures that uplift everyone.”

He appealed to the NSA for access to key venues such as the Borteyman Complex and University of Ghana Stadium, and for technical personnel to support the festival’s logistics.

In a show of solidarity, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah pledged the full support of his office.

“This is a national priority. We’re committed to seeing para sports thrive and will provide the facilities and manpower needed to ensure success.”

The collaboration between AfPC and the NSA is being hailed as a bold step in Ghana’s sports diplomacy and a significant milestone in empowering athletes with disabilities across Africa.

Missing AFCON fuels Black Stars’ World Cup ambition – Jerome Opoku

0

Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku says Ghana’s painful failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has ignited an even greater drive to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana currently tops Group I with 15 points, three ahead of second-placed Comoros, and with four matches left, Opoku believes the team’s hunger to bounce back is pushing them toward qualification.

“We have much bigger motivation now,” Opoku told Flashscore. “Missing out on the AFCON was a huge disappointment for us, for the fans, and for the whole country. That setback has given us a deeper hunger to make things right by qualifying for the World Cup.”

The defender, who starred in Ghana’s convincing win over Madagascar, insists the team’s renewed focus is firmly fixed on securing a place at the global showpiece.

“I am 200% confident of qualifying,” he declared.

“That’s the goal, and we know it won’t come easy. But we’ve regrouped, and we’re determined to give everything to stay on top and get the job done.”

With four crucial fixtures remaining, the Black Stars are aiming to channel their frustration into fuel for redemption on the road to 2026.

Both women are reported to be in stable condition and will receive necessary medical attention before undergoing standard police procedures to provide their accounts for ongoing investigations,” she stated.

“The Ghana Police Service remains steadfast in its core mandate of crime prevention, detection, apprehension, and prosecution,” said DCOP Donkor. “We are committed to ensuring that Ghana remains a safe and secure place for all.”

TEWU-GH Not Recognised By GTEC – Says TEWU -TUC

0

King James Azortibah (m) together with other TEWU of TUC executives

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has addressed ongoing controversy surrounding the union’s representation on the governing councils of public universities in the  country.

Addressing the issue at a press conference in Accra, General Secretary of TEWU of TUC, King James Azortibah, said the group that has been protesting is a breakaway group that is not recognised by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

“About three years ago, some colleagues who were in fact, executives of our Union (TEWU of TUC) decided to break away.  The reasons being that they had served their two, four-year terms of tenure (in total, eight years) but still wanted to hold on as local executives, even though the TEWU Constitution frowns against such acts,” he said.

Mr.  Azortibah further noted that in order to continue to hold on to power, they decided to leave TEWU of TUC (GH) to form a new workers’ association with the name Tertiary Education Workers Union Ghana (TEWU-GH).

“Surprisingly, they continued to use our acronym TEWU to deceive the public that their newly formed association was the same as our Union TEWU. While respecting their right to freedom of association, we have been dealing with subsequent challenges, including their inability to account for their stewardship, attempts to assume TEWU’s assets, disruption of council meetings, and coercing members to join strikes,” he explained.

He reiterated that TEWU of TUC remains the legitimate representative union for specific staff categories in public universities, as stipulated in the Public Universities Act and Statute.

“TEWU of TUC (GH) remain the legitimate council representatives,” he insisted.

The union thus called on GTEC to remain objective and neutral in the matter, advising university managements to instil discipline among staff and adhere to the rule of law.

TEWU of TUC also condemned the actions of some university management officials who seem to be supporting the breakaway group.

“We urge Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to remain objective and neutral in this matter.  We do not intend to make anyone unpopular, but it is important for our stakeholders, especially the Director General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, to respect the rule of law and remain neutral in this matter.  As a regulator, we expect GTEC to advise the university management to instill discipline in the staff who take the law into their hands to misbehave and embark on unnecessary and illegal strikes,” he added.

AFCON U20: Ghana to face hosts Egypt in Monday’s quarter-final

0

Ghana’s Black Satellites will battle host nation Egypt in a decisive quarter-final clash at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, with a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile on the line.

The clash follows Ghana’s strong group stage performance, where they topped Group C with seven points—securing two wins and a draw while conceding just once in three games. Despite scoring only three goals, the team displayed tactical discipline and resilience that earned them a commanding spot in the knockout round.

Egypt, who qualified as one of the best third-placed teams from Group A, now stand between Ghana and a return to the world stage. A victory for either side on Saturday will not only secure a place in the semi-finals of the continental showpiece but also guarantee automatic qualification for the 2025 U-20 World Cup.

Ghana, champions of the U-20 World Cup in 2009, have missed out on the last four editions of the tournament. This quarter-final presents a critical opportunity for the West African giants to restore their standing among youth football’s global elite.

With the pressure of the home crowd on the Egyptians and the hunger of the Black Satellites to end a decade-long World Cup absence, the stage is set for a high-intensity encounter.

(IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has formally requested a detailed roadmap from the Electoral Commission (EC) for the collation of results in the 2024 parliamentary election for the Ablekuma North Constituency.

This request was made during an emergency meeting held by the Police Management Board (POMAB) with the National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF) at the police headquarters yesterday.

Mr. Yohuno emphasized that having a clear roadmap for the collation process would enhance coordination between security agencies and electoral officials, ultimately helping to prevent disputes during the results tallying in Ablekuma North.

“Prior to today’s meeting, representatives from the EC and a section of POMAB convened to discuss the way forward for Ablekuma North. The EC was represented by Deputy Chairman in charge of operations, Samuel Tettey, who expressed their readiness to complete the collation process for the three outstanding polling stations in Ablekuma North and requested police assistance for security,” Mr. Yohuno stated.

He urged the EC to provide NESTF with specific details regarding the date and location for finalizing the collation. “History often tests us with pivotal moments. This is such a moment. The way we handle the situation in Ablekuma North will resonate across the country,” he added.

The IGP assured the EC of NESTF’s full support through collaboration with various security agencies to enhance security during the collation process. “We assure them [EC] of our full support. This will involve engaging key political stakeholders, including the EC, to ensure a shared understanding of the collation process,” Mr. Yohuno noted.

He also emphasized that NESTF members would act swiftly but carefully during the collation of results from the remaining three polling stations, urging them to maintain public trust throughout the process.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tettey, Deputy Chairman of the EC, expressed optimism regarding the upcoming election process in Ablekuma North.

“In our latest correspondence to the IGP and NESTF, we scheduled a meeting to discuss a roadmap that will enable the Commission to conclude the collation of results for Ablekuma North,” Mr. Tettey stated.

0

The Consul General of the United States Embassy, Elliot Fertik, has disclosed that the embassy issued 25,000 visas out of 61,000 applicants in year 2024.
“We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana interested in studying, investing, or doing business in the United States. Last year, the U.S. Embassy issued around 25,000 visas to Ghanaians to visit, work and study,” he said.

He, however, cautioned against entering the US without due process, adding that those who break the law may face visa refusal, revocation and or deportation.

“To enter the United States, applicants must follow the law. The United States has zero tolerance for illegal immigration. Those who break the law, including students, may face visa refusal, revocation and or deportation,” he added.

According to him, the embassy is committed to educating Ghanaians on the proper application processes to avoid any problems, adding that if anyone so much as lies to get a visa, they will face dire consequences.

“We are committed to educating Ghanaians on the proper application process to avoid any problems or complications. If one tries to enter the United States illegally, lies to get a visa, works without legal permission, or overstays a visa, there will be serious penalties.”

Ghana’s foreign currency issuer credit rating upgraded from ‘SD’ to ‘CCC+’

0

S&P Global Ratings has raised Ghana’s foreign currency issuer credit rating from ‘SD’ (Selective Default) to ‘CCC+.

The upgrade is as a result of Ghana’s progress in the debt restructuring efforts and improved macroeconomic outlook.

The rating agency announced the move following the successful conclusion of key phases of the country’s domestic debt exchange programme and continued negotiations with external creditors.

“We affirmed our ‘CCC+’ issue ratings on Ghana’s debt. We also affirmed our ‘CCC+/C’ long- and short-term local currency ratings on Ghana. The outlook on both the foreign and local currency ratings is stable. Ghana’s transferability and convertibility assessment remains ‘CCC+’”, the rating agency stated in its May 9, 2025 assessment sighted by Citi Business News.

The upgraded credit rating is underpinned by strengthening external indicators, notably a marked rise in gold export earnings and the steady re-accumulation of foreign exchange reserves.

It signals improved external liquidity and enhanced capacity to meet near-term external obligation as the restructuring of outstanding commercial debt also nears completion.

Following the successful Eurobond exchange in October 2024, the revised ‘CCC+’ rating more accurately captures Ghana’s improving creditworthiness.

This marks a critical step forward after the successful completion of both local currency and Eurobond restructurings, as well as the ratified memorandum of understanding with bilateral creditors signed on January 29, 2025.

Downside Caution

However, S&P Global Ratings warns that Ghana’s credit rating could face downward pressure over the next 12 to 18 months if fiscal performance deteriorates or financing conditions tighten.

Should such a development happen, it could further elevate the already high debt servicing costs on the country and constrain the government’s ability to refinance upcoming debt maturities which will pose renewed risks to fiscal and external stability.

“While some lenders could still become holdout creditors, the likelihood of related disruption or unwinding of the debt restructuring process is mitigated from the principles of comparability of treatment under the G20 Common Framework, most-favored creditor clauses in its restructured bonds, and the process’ advanced stage”, the rating agency mentioned.

Scores of people have been injured in a multiple-vehicle crash at Krofrom in the Kumasi metropolis following a heavy downpour on Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred when a cargo truck reportedly lost control while descending from the Krofrom traffic light towards Ashtown. Upon reaching the area near the X5 Pub, the truck rammed into several vehicles.

Eyewitnesses say the driver lost control of the steering, causing the truck to plough into oncoming traffic, trapping both drivers and passengers in their vehicles.

It took the swift intervention of bystanders and good Samaritans to pry open the mangled vehicles and rescue the occupants.

Several injured persons were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The exact number of casualties remains unclear as of Friday evening.

Police have since launched an investigation into the incident and have urged road users to exercise caution, particularly during wet conditions.

Ghana’s relay team eyes World Athletics Championships spot in Guangzhou

0

Ghana’s national men’s 4x100m relay team is targeting qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo as they gear up for the Athletics Relay Championship in Guangzhou, China, scheduled for May 10–11.

The event, taking place at the Guangdong Olympic Stadium, serves as the official qualification route to Tokyo, with the top 14 teams in each relay event securing automatic berths.

Ghana has been drawn in Heat 1 of the men’s 4x100m relay, alongside sprint giants Great Britain & Northern Ireland and France, as well as Korea, Colombia, and Poland—making for a fiercely competitive lineup.

Only the top two teams in the heat will earn automatic qualification.

Ghana Athletics in statement on May 8, 2025, confirmed the relay squad, which comprises Joseph Paul Amoah, Sean Nana Awere Kweku Safo-Antwi, Ibrahim Fuseini, Barnabas Aggerh, and Mustapha Alufar Bokpin.

The team combines seasoned talent and youthful promise, led by Amoah—Ghana’s 200m gold medallist at the 2023 African Games and the first Ghanaian sprinter to win the event.

Under the guidance of experienced coach George Sanford Pincock, the team arrived in Guangzhou on Thursday with strong momentum. Fuseini, Aggerh, and Bokpin have all impressed in recent indoor competitions, and the group believes they have what it takes to secure a Tokyo ticket.

Ghana’s participation in the Guangzhou Relays reinforces its ambitions of reclaiming its place among global sprinting elites, buoyed by its improved standing in the World Athletics rankings.

According to event organisers, 734 athletes from 43 countries will compete in the two-day meet in Guangzhou.

Ghana’s Heat 1 contest promises to be one of the most anticipated of the competition, as the team fights for qualification against some of the world’s sprinting powerhouses.

Veteran Actor Koo Ofori Arrested Over Alleged $50,000 Fraud

0

Samuel Karikari, popularly known as Koo Ofori from the beloved Ghanaian TV series Efiewura, has reportedly been arrested by the Accra Central Police Command for allegedly defrauding a U.S.-based Ghanaian citizen of $50,000.

According to Kasoa-based Obaatanpa Radio, the complainant, who lives in California, transferred the money to Koo Ofori under the impression that it was for a genuine investment venture. However, it is alleged that the actor failed to honour the agreement and disappeared with the funds.

Court documents further reveal that Koo Ofori missed a scheduled court appearance at the Dansoman District Court on April 17, 2025. His failure to appear led to a bench warrant for his arrest.

On May 9, 2025, video footage shared by Accra-based Atinka FM showed the veteran actor in handcuffs as he was escorted by police officers to the courthouse. However, the court session did not proceed, and the hearing has been postponed to Monday, May 12, 2025.

Police have confirmed that Koo Ofori will remain in custody until the new court date.

The news has sparked mixed reactions, with many fans expressing surprise and disappointment over the serious allegations against the well-known actor.

Patrick Yaw Boamah

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Kuku Hill, Osu, has officially started the 2025 Christian Home Week celebrations. This year, the event has a special ambassador—Patrick Yaw Boamah, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Boamah encouraged families to be strong and loving. He said that good homes help raise children with strong values. Quoting the Bible (Proverbs 22:6), he reminded parents that teaching children about faith and prayer helps them grow into good people.

He also said that strong families are important because they help shape the leaders of tomorrow. “Homes are where future leaders are trained,” he explained.

During the celebration, Mr. Boamah asked everyone to think about the real meaning of marriage. “Marriage should be about love, purpose, and building a happy home that leaves a positive impact,” he said.

Many people were at the event, including Christian leaders and representatives from different government departments. The Christian Council of Ghana said that they are working with Mr. Boamah to help make families stronger and more loving.

Mr. Koku Anyidoho, the Chairperson for the event and founder of the Atta Mills Institute, spoke about the importance of traditional marriage, saying it should be between a man and a woman. He quoted the Bible (Genesis 1:26–27) to support this idea.

Dr. Fatima Alabo, the Special Guest of Honour, also talked about how important it is to prepare for marriage. She encouraged churches to teach people about the meaning of marriage and said it should always include Christ.

Cedi stability offers respite after years of losses

0

The recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi has brought significant relief to the business community, according to the President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Friday, May 9, Dr. Obeng described the cedi’s performance as “very welcome news,” noting that the positive turn offers much-needed respite for businesses that have weathered years of economic challenges.

“The turn of events has been very positive and it has brought a lot of relief to the business community,” he said. “It has given us some amount of respite that is going to help us, especially to recoup our losses for the past couple of years.”

He further highlighted that the cedi’s stability is not only restoring trader confidence but also presenting an opportunity to extend some of the benefits to consumers.

“The cedi appreciation is significant to the extent that we will be able to recoup some of our losses and also share the gains with our consumers,” Dr. Obeng added.

The Ghanaian cedi has shown modest but steady appreciation in recent weeks, a trend many analysts attribute to improved foreign exchange inflows, sound monetary policies, and more disciplined fiscal management. This comes as welcome news to the business sector, particularly importers, who have borne the brunt of exchange rate volatility in recent years.

GUTA has expressed hope that the current momentum will be sustained to further stabilise the market and support broader economic recovery.

Judges Receive Training On International Cooperation

Participants in a group photo

A group of selected Judges and Magistrate are receiving a two-day training in Accra on international cooperation in the administration of cross border legal issues.

The training which is organised by the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of Ghana and the Judicial Training Institute of the Judicial Service of Ghana, and funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation

The initiative underscores the need to build judicial capacity in international cooperation mechanisms and seeks to enhance judicial competence in navigating the landscape of international judicial cooperation, aligning Ghanaian judicial practice with global standards and legal frameworks.

The training will focus on the concept and importance of international judicial cooperation, key United Nations conventions on transnational crime and corruption, regional cooperation models, Mutual Legal Assistance and extradition as well as challenges and the role of the International Criminal Court.

The Director of the Judicial Training Institute, Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu in a speech read for him by Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, said the training stands as a powerful and necessary response to these emerging realities.

He indicated that in a world increasingly shaped by transnational movement of people, ideas, capital, and crime, the role of the judiciary is more globally interconnected than ever before.

“From cybercrime and terrorism to corruption and human trafficking, the threats we face are no longer constrained by national boundaries. As a judiciary, we must therefore evolve, not only in our knowledge, but also in our orientation, collaboration, and strategic response,” he stated.

Justice Tanko also indicate that the programme offers the participants a moment of reflection – an opportunity to critically assess how the Ghanaian judiciary can align itself more effectively with global legal standards and systems.

He noted that two critical sessions will be led by members of Ghana’s Bench, bringing local insights into global conversations.

The first session, “Regional Legal Cooperation: Lessons from Europe and Implications for Ghana,” invites participants to draw inspiration from European models as it considers avenues for innovation within ECOWAS and the African Union.

The second session, “Applying International Judicial Cooperation in the Ghanaian Context: Practical Insights on MLA, Extradition, and Legal Obstacles,” grounds international principles in the practical realities of our courts.

“This training is not merely about building capacity. It reinforces the core principle of judicial responsibility-the duty to deliver justice that is fair, timely, and responsive to the needs of a changing world. That duty does not end at our borders; it extends to the global quest for justice, accountability, and the rule of law,” he added.

A representative of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Dr. Mira Benucci noted that the complexities of modern legal systems require stakeholder to master international legal frameworks and cooperation mechanisms.

She encouraged participants to actively participate in the training and exchange ideas and experiences, indicating that “this collaboration approach will enrich your understanding and strengthen your ability to meet the challenges of international judicial cooperation.”

She was hopeful that the training marks the beginning of long-term partnership between Ghana and Italy, “because together we can build a stronger and more interconnected legal community that upholds justice, the rule of law and human rights.”

Mahama didn’t receive vehicles from NSB

0

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has strongly denied claims that President John Dramani Mahama received three high-end vehicles prior to his swearing-in.

The denial follows a memo allegedly authored by former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and addressed to the National Security Coordinator.

In the memo, Adu-Boahene claimed that GH¢5,135,000 was disbursed to the special aide of the President-elect for the purchase of luxury vehicles, including a Nissan Patrol Platinum, a 2024 Nissan Patrol Titanium, and a 2022 Land Cruiser GXR.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Friday, May 9, 2025, Dr. Tanko-Computer dismissed the allegations, accusing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of fabricating the story to tarnish the image of President Mahama.

“I don’t know anything about this. How can that be possible? I know the calibre of the President we have, he won’t stoop that low to this,” he asserted.

BPS calls for dialogue on transportation of hazardous substances

0

The Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Public Safety, Nana Yaw Akwada, has called for a broader stakeholder engagement to address the risks associated with transporting hazardous materials on Ghana’s roads.

His comments come in response to a proposal by the Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, suggesting a daytime ban on transporting dangerous substances such as LPG and dynamite.

Amaliba explained that moving these materials at night could reduce the risk of accidents that threaten human life, property, and the environment.

While acknowledging the intent behind the suggestion, Nana Yaw Akwada, in an interview with Citi News on Friday, May 9, described the proposed ban as an unsustainable solution.

He emphasised that the safe transportation of hazardous materials depends more on robust protocols and oversight than on the time of day.

He stressed the need for a national dialogue involving all relevant regulatory bodies to craft a comprehensive policy framework.

“I believe that we have to have a broader national discussion on this, involving the key stakeholders within this consideration. The Environmental Protection Agency, the Minerals Commission, the Department of Factories, and of Training and Licensing for people who move such substances.

“If we can have that neutral discussion, we wouldn’t have to worry about what time of day these substances are moved,” he said.

Asantehene prides in granddaughter preserving and promoting Ghanaian heritage

0

The 75th birthday of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, attracted a vibrant gathering of royal family members and other well-wishers to the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Among those paying homage was the Otumfuo’s granddaughter, Amma Prempeh, a distinguished BBC journalist and producer of Ghana’s Kente feature film, whose visit coincided with the traditional Awukudae observance.

She was pleased to present a unique commemorative gift – a $25,000 Jeffrey Okyere Agyei’s Sankofa Kente artwork, representing the importance of learning from the past.

“Granpa wasn’t expecting me in Ghana, so he was very happy and surprised about my visit,” an excited Amma stated.

The gathering provided an opportunity for Amma Prempeh to brief the Asantehene on her widely acclaimed documentary about the royal fabric, ‘Kente,’ which has been screened across the Americas and Europe.

Her film, “The Importance of Kente to Ghanaians and Black Africans,” is Ghana’s first Kente culture story documentary production. It was first premiered in Kumasi on August 26, 2023, and later screened in Accra on September 10, 2023.

The self-funded documentary delves into the origins, intricate artistry, captivating history, and enduring beauty of Ghana’s iconic Kente fabric.

It highlights how Kente weaving supports local communities committed to preserving its history, development, and commercial aspects.

The documentary also explores Kente’s evolving role in human rights activism.

Through Amma Prempeh’s tireless advocacy, Kente achieved significant international recognition.

UNESCO officially recognised Kente as an Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 4, 2024, during its 19th session in Paraguay.

Kente’s remarkable durability, complex designs, and profound aesthetic appeal contribute to its rich symbolism and diverse interpretations, representing not only Black identity but also Africa in a broader context.

Joe Ghartey calls for ceasefire in NPP amid rising tensions

0

Joe Ghartey is leading member of the NPP Joe Ghartey is leading member of the NPP

Former Attorney-General, Minister of Justice, and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, has called for a ceasefire between feuding factions within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging unity and introspection at a time when the party faces internal division following its recent electoral defeat.

Ghartey’s appeal comes amid escalating tensions between prominent party figures, most notably the ongoing public spat between Abronye DC, Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, and former presidential aspirant and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

Their feud has further exposed growing cracks within the party’s rank and file, prompting concerns among supporters and senior members alike about the party’s cohesion and electoral future.

According to Joe Ghartey, no single individual, regardless of stature or popularity, can secure victory for the NPP in the next general election without the full backing and unity of the party.

“There is no point in pointing fingers against each other”, saying that as a popular Ghanaian proverb says ‘when you point a finger at one person the other four point at you.'”

He emphasised the urgent need for “cool heads, sober reflection, and strategic thinking,” urging members to move away from finger-pointing and blame-shifting.

While acknowledging that leadership often bears the brunt of criticism, “since it is said that a fish rots from the head”, Ghartey was quick to point out that the issues undermining the party go beyond top-level leadership.

He stated that problems exist across all levels, including operational inefficiencies and internal disconnects.

Drawing from personal experience, he revealed that during his tenure as a Cabinet Minister, he sometimes found it difficult to reach certain Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in state institutions.

However, he declined to name those individuals, saying doing so now would not serve a constructive purpose.

Turning to the feud between Abronye DC and Kennedy Agyapong, Ghartey called for restraint and reconciliation, appealing directly to both figures and their supporters to stand down for the sake of the party’s survival and credibility.

“This is not the time for personal battles. This is the time for rebuilding,” he urged.
