Bubu gowns have evolved from traditional African wear into a top-tier fashion statement embraced by stylish women across the globe. Known for their comfort, flowing silhouette, and effortless elegance, bubu gowns are perfect for fashionistas who want to blend culture with contemporary flair.
What makes bubu gowns especially attractive is their versatility. They can be styled for casual outings, formal events, religious gatherings, or even as luxurious loungewear. For women who love to stay on trend without sacrificing comfort, bubu gowns offer the best of both worlds.
Modern bubu styles come in vibrant prints, plain luxe fabrics like silk, chiffon, lace, or brocade, and can be adorned with intricate embroidery, sequins, or beaded embellishments. A simple plain bubu with bold accessories gives a rich and classy look, while printed bubus make a bold fashion statement on their own.
For formal occasions, opt for a structured bubu gown with elegant embroidery around the neckline or sleeves. Pair it with high heels, a statement clutch, and bold jewelry for a complete look.
For casual days, a short or mid-length bubu in a breathable fabric like cotton or chiffon works beautifully. Pair with flats or sandals and minimal accessories for a chic, relaxed vibe.
Bubu gowns are also perfect for plus-size women, as they flatter all body types without clinging or restricting movement. They are the go-to choice for ladies who want to remain stylish while staying comfortable.
In today’s fashion world, bubu gowns are no longer just traditional attire—they’re a modern fashion staple. Whether you prefer a simple minimalist look or a bold, dramatic flair, there’s a bubu gown out there to suit your personal style.
A communications team member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini, has said the party will not opt out of the upcoming Akwatia by-election slated for September 2, 2025.
The Electoral Commission announced a date for the by-election after the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi, passed away.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has cautioned parliamentary Hansard reporters and staff against releasing unapproved versions of the Hansard to the public, warning that such actions undermine democracy and distort the official record of parliamentary proceedings.
Addressing participants at the opening of the 11th Biennial Conference of the Commonwealth Hansard Editors Association – Africa Region (CHEA-AR) in Accra yesterday, Mr. Bagbin stressed that the Hansard, the official record of debates in Parliament, must reflect only what has been approved by the House and prepared under the Speaker’s authority.
“The Hansard is not what you sit, listen to and record. It must be ‘as nearly as possible verbatim’ and approved by the House before publication. When you come, record, and send out your notes as the official report, you are doing a great disservice to Parliament and damaging democracy, particularly the African version of democracy,” the Speaker said.
Mr. Bagbin recounted an instance where a document from a parliamentary Hansard reporter, not an approved Hansard, was used in a Supreme Court case, saying such incidents risk misinforming the public and judicial bodies.
He reminded staff that their work is more than mere transcription, describing them as “a special specialty” distinct from the general public service, with a critical role in protecting the integrity of Parliament’s records.
The Speaker also underscored the dangers of personal bias and perception in reporting parliamentary debates, insisting that the only safeguard is strict adherence to the Standing Orders, which require that the Hansard be prepared under the Speaker’s authority.
“The official report is the document of the House; not yours. Without you, there is no Parliament. But remember, it is the House that owns the Hansard,” Mr. Bagbin emphasised.
The conference, themed “Charting the Future of Hansard: Embracing Innovation and Technology for Enhanced Parliamentary Reporting in Africa,” brought together parliamentary reporting professionals from across the continent to discuss innovation, technology, and the preservation of parliamentary records.
Mr. Bagbin urged participants to produce proposals that would strengthen the security and integrity of Hansard records in the digital era, warning that misinformation, disinformation, and deepfakes now pose serious threats to parliamentary democracy.
Embrace AI, Social Media
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga also called on the Hansard Department to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and social media tools to make parliamentary records more accurate, accessible, and relevant to citizens.
Mr. Ayariga emphasised that Hansard preserves the legacy of every member who has served in the country’s legislature.
“We as parliamentarians need to take the Hansard seriously and make sure that it is a true reflection of who we are, what we stood for, and what we said on the floor of Parliament,” he said.
Highlighting the rapid global shift into an AI-driven era, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central noted that emerging technologies now allow real-time transcription and preservation of debates.
He urged the Hansard team to align its records with what citizens witness through Parliament’s live television broadcasts.
“If there’s a discrepancy between what they heard and what you have written, clearly there will be controversy between you and the public,” he warned.
Mr. Ayariga also proposed integrating notification systems into the Hansard process. Using the example of social media alerts, he suggested that relevant ministries, agencies, and district assemblies could be automatically notified when mentioned during parliamentary debates.
“If a particular district assembly is mentioned, the public relations officer should be alerted. If welfare issues are discussed, the director in charge should get notified,” he explained.
The United States Embassy in Ghana is stepping up its media outreach efforts, seeking stronger ties with the country’s private press and offering clarity on evolving U.S. policies, particularly in the areas of diplomacy, trade, and visa regulations.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed a total of GH¢243,225,701.55 in claims to credentialed healthcare providers across the country. The payment, made on August 6, 2025, covers claims up to June 2025.
In a statement issued by the Corporate Affairs Directorate, the NHIA said public health facilities received GH¢120,048,031.54, representing 49 per cent of the total amount.
Private sector facilities were paid GH¢78,747,523.25 (32 per cent), while mission-based facilities received GH¢44,430,126.76 (18 per cent).
The Authority attributed the accelerated pace of claims settlement to the improved cash flow from the uncapped National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), which it said had strengthened mutual trust between NHIA management and administrators of credentialed facilities nationwide.
It reiterated its commitment to prompt claims payments as part of efforts to curb illegal charges by some service providers for services covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The NHIA further urged healthcare providers to submit accurate and timely claims to ensure smooth reimbursement processes.

Accra, Aug 12, GNA – President Carlos Vila Nova of São Tomé and Príncipe, has commiserated with President John Dramani Mahama and the People of Ghana on the military helicopter tragedy.
President Nova, who arrived in Accra on Monday, signed the book of condolences and laid flowers at the Ceremonial Garden of the Presidency in honour of the eight victims of the military helicopter crash.
The eight distinguished Ghanaians who lost their lives while on an official duty in the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region included Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; and Alhaji Dr Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology.
Others are Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Mr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; and Mr Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The rest are Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, all of the Ghana Air Force.
Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna were both laid to rest on Sunday at the new military cemetery at Tse Addo in Accra.
The International Human Rights Class of 2024/25 of the University of Ghana (UG) School of Law, has organised a press conference on students’ academic freedom as part of the year group’s project.
The event, held last Friday, was dubbed “Silencing the Mind: The Quiet War on Academic Freedom in Ghana,” and aimed to highlight the issues of student’s academic freedom violation in Ghana’s higher education institutions.
In an interview with a lecturer at the UG School of Law, Prof. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua mentioned that students place in academic freedom is very low, which affects the relationship between students and lecturers, even in the classroom.
“We also realise that because students place in academic freedom equation is very low, it affects the relationship between them and lectures, especially in the classroom,” he stressed.
He added that, whatever is taught in the classroom is taken into society by students, noting that when students know their rights they can use constructive means and processes to dialogue with their lecturers.
“When you know your rights, you use constructive means. You realise that there are certain processes and channels that you have to use, so that constructive approach is to enable students to dialogue with their lecturers, to let them know where their gaps are, and then to enable the lecturers to sit up and realise that there are problems,” he explained.
The Vice President of the International Human Rights Class of 2024/25, Kingsley Ottu Amponsah, in an interview, explained that academic freedom is a way to help students express their knowledge and contribution to academic work freely, but not a way to armour students against lecturers.
He said “rather than seeing it as a way to armour students against lecturers, see it as a way to help students express their knowledge, express what they came to school to do.”
He further questioned the importance of education when there is the limit to freedom of expression of knowledge.
“The main purpose of education is to give us freedom, to allow us to freely express our knowledge, freely express the things on our hearts basically. If you are inhibiting or limiting these things, then what is the purpose of our education at all?” he quizzed.
He stressed that the university should be an independent body which should not be run by political parties.
“Education should not be run by political parties. There are so many forms of influence that come through on these governmental institutions, which is very wrong,” he added.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that it will contest the upcoming Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025, in the Eastern Region.
In a statement signed by Deputy National Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the party described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent decision not to contest the Tamale Central by-election as a calculated move to avoid defeat and garner public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia polls.
Traders, especially market women have been encouraged not to allow their children to go near woodfuel fires and coalpots while cooking.
The Head of Consumer Services at the National Petroleum Authority, (NPA), Eunice Budu Nyarko, gave the advice while interacting with traders, market women, hawkers, among others at the Ejisu and Kejetia markets in the Ashanti Region.
According to her, studies had shown that the continuous practice could exacerbate underlying health conditions such as asthma, which leads to respiratory tract infections, reduced lung function and even heart failure, adding that the prolonged exposure to smoke from charcoal and firewood could also increase the risk of low birth weight and infant mortality.
Relatedly, the NPA expanded its LPG safety campaigns to some tertiary institutions and colleges of Education in the country.
In the Ashanti Region, training sessions were held at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Sefwi Wiawso College of Education in the Western North Region.
The initiative seeks to instill safe LPG handling habits among Ghanaian youth while championing the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) for enhanced safety.
During interactive demonstrations, Mr Obed Kraine Boachie, Head, Gas, Commercial Regulation engaged students on critical safety protocols, including proper cylinder storage in well ventilated spaces and secure transportation techniques like keeping cylinders in an upright position to minimise leak risks.
“After transporting a filled LPG cylinder, allow it to sit undisturbed for at least 30 minutes before use to ensure the gas or any liquid components inside stabilise, preventing potential issues when the cylinder is opened or used,” Mr Boachie advised participants. The training particularly emphasised emergency response, correcting the dangerous misconception that merely switching off the stove suffices during gas leaks.
“Immediately shut the cylinder valve and open all windows to disperse gas, these seconds-long actions can prevent tragedies,” he stressed.
The participants also practiced leak detection using soapy water tests and learned to identify expired cylinders.
The CRM system emerged as a game changer in the discussions, with Mr Boachie detailing how it transfers cylinder maintenance burdens to certified bottling companies while slashing consumer costs.
The NPA’s Head of Communications, Racheal Naa Atswei Nee-Okpey, also led a team to some radio stations in the region to compliment the exercise, assuring the public of the authority’s commitment to safety and regulatory enforcement.
“The NPA, as the downstream regulator, remains committed to safeguarding the interests of consumers, industry stakeholders and the public at large,” she added.
The National LPG safety awareness campaign forms part of the NPA’s broader initiative to promote the safe and responsible use of petroleum products and prevent avoidable accidents in homes, schools and communities nationwide.
Prophet Ogyaba, popularly known as Prophet Fire Oja, founder of the Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry
Prophet Ogyaba, popularly known as Prophet Fire Oja, founder of the Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry, has pushed back against the government’s new directive for religious leaders to submit prophecies for review, insisting that the state must provide car and fuel money for prophets before expecting them to comply.
Speaking in an interview shared on social media, Prophet Fire Oja argued that not all prophets have the financial means to travel to the Jubilee House to disclose their spiritual revelations.
“If the government says we should come to the Jubilee House with our prophecies, they should also give us car money and fuel. Not all of us can afford to travel there. If they want to hear it in person, they should take care of our transport,” he stressed.
His comments come after the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations issued a directive urging religious leaders across Ghana to formally submit any prophecy or spiritual insight of national significance for urgent review.
According to Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Presidential Envoy, the move is to ensure “responsibility, discernment, and proper stewardship over the nation’s destiny, particularly in these uncertain times.”
The directive targets prophecies relating to high-profile political leaders, governance, national security, or public stability.
“We are not trying to stop the work of God, but we believe prophecies must be handled with care so they do not cause unnecessary fear, panic, or instability,” Afriyie Ankrah stated in an August 10, 2025, release.
The Presidential Envoy also called for fervent prayers for the President, the government, state institutions, bereaved families and the nation in the wake of the recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of government officials, military personnel, and NDC party executives.
“In moments like this, unity and prayer are more important than ever. We ask all faith leaders to stand with us for the peace and stability of Ghana,” he appealed.

Fitch Solutions predict halt in monetary policy easing in 2026
Fitch Solutions expects the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to halt its monetary policy easing cycle in the second half of 2026 as inflationary pressures re-emerge.
According to the research agency, although inflation is projected to return to the BoG’s 6.0–10.0% target range in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, it is likely to rise above the upper threshold in the second quarter of 2026.
Fitch attributes this rebound to the unwinding of favourable base effects from the cedi’s appreciation in April–May 2025. It also notes that with Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility arrangement with the IMF set to end in April 2026, the country’s budget deficit is expected to widen, from a projected 3.7% of GDP in 2025 to 4.8% in 2026, adding further inflationary pressure.
“Against this backdrop, we expect the BoG to hold rates steady through H2 2026. We project that the Bank of Ghana will lower its benchmark interest rate to 23% by end-2025 and 20% by end-2026, following the steep 300-basis-point cut to 25% in July 2025,” Fitch stated.
How Ghana’s Reference Rate shapes your loan payments
The firm also forecasts average inflation to decline from 22.9% in 2024 to 15.5% in 2025 and 12.2% in 2026, supporting a dovish policy stance at the final MPC meeting of 2025 and the first three meetings of 2026.
Meanwhile, Fitch expects the BoG to cut the policy rate by 100 basis points to 24% at its next Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in September.

Kurt Okraku is the President of the Ghana Football Assiciation
The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed that President Kurt Okraku is not currently considering running for a third term.
According to him, the GFA boss is focused on improving the fortunes of Ghana football and ending his tenure with a strong legacy.
However, Asante Twum noted that if Congress approves a proposal to extend the presidential term limit to three, aligning with CAF and FIFA, that decision could influence future developments.
Speaking to GhanaWeb Sports at the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress on August 12, 2025, the GFA Communications Director clarified that despite public criticism of the proposal, Kurt Okraku has not decided to seek another term.
“We can extend it beyond two terms. Then he will be in a position to say whether or not he will run again. So it is not about Kurt. Unfortunately, the commentaries over the period have always focused on Kurt Okraku. FIFA governance believes it is a good step, but they do not have the power to enforce it.
“Go back to your Congress. If Congress says yes, then you can amend your statutes and extend it beyond two terms to three. If, after 2027, the current president, having gone through this process, wants to run again, it will be permitted by law. But as we speak, it is not even permitted by law, let alone for him to be thinking about running again,” he said.

Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament Rt. Hon Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has commended both the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Minority Leader Alexader Kwamena Afenyo-Markin of the substance they are made of as parliamentary leaders.
This, he said, makes his work easier. He, however, was quick to point out that the only challenge he has is how to mold them to work together in the ninth Parliament.
Fashion is no longer confined to one body type, and that’s something worth celebrating. The modern fashion industry is embracing diversity in all its forms, and curvy women are finally receiving the recognition—and the wardrobe—they deserve. Gowns for fuller figures are now designed not just to fit, but to flatter, empower, and inspire confidence. Because let’s face it—chubby ladies deserve to feel stylish, bold, and unapologetically fabulous.
Why Inclusivity in Fashion Matters
For decades, the fashion world held a narrow standard of beauty. But times have changed. Today, designers are shifting their focus from size exclusion to body positivity. Fashion isn’t about hiding your shape; it’s about highlighting your beauty, and every curve tells a story worth showing off.
Top Gown Styles That Flatter Curvy Figures
1. A-Line Gowns: Timeless Elegance
A-line gowns are a go-to for curvy women, and for good reason. This silhouette gently flares out from the waist, creating a beautiful balance between the upper and lower body. It draws attention to the bust and away from the midsection, making it both flattering and forgiving. Perfect for weddings, evening events, or casual brunches—this style does it all.
2. Empire Waist Gowns: Graceful and Comfortable
An empire waist sits just below the bust, allowing the fabric to drape softly over the tummy and hips. This creates an elongated figure and a graceful flow that’s perfect for romantic evenings or formal events. When crafted from fabrics like chiffon or satin, the empire gown becomes an elegant staple.
3. Wrap Gowns: Tailored to You
Wrap gowns are not only stylish—they’re incredibly functional. The adjustable tie gives a custom fit, cinching the waist and defining an hourglass shape. The classic V-neckline also elongates the neck and flatters the face. This gown is perfect for day-to-night looks, offering both comfort and structure.
4. Mermaid Gowns: Bold and Beautiful
Who says curvy women can’t rock a mermaid gown? With the right fit and fabric—like stretch satin or jersey—this silhouette hugs the curves and flares at the knees, creating a show-stopping figure. It’s daring, glamorous, and ideal for women ready to make a bold statement.
5. Off-Shoulder & Cold-Shoulder Styles
Off-shoulder gowns are flattering on fuller arms and shoulders, drawing attention to the neckline and collarbones. These styles exude femininity and work wonderfully for formal occasions, adding just the right touch of drama and elegance.
Pro Tips for Choosing the Right Gown
Focus on Fit, Not Size: The number on the tag doesn’t define you. Look for gowns that fit well and enhance your favorite features.
Embrace Shapewear (If You Want To): A little support can go a long way in boosting confidence and creating a smoother silhouette.
Choose the Right Fabric: Flowy materials like chiffon, satin, and jersey drape beautifully over curves. Avoid overly stiff or clingy fabrics unless tailored perfectly.
Don’t Shy Away from Color: Bold hues, florals, or even black—all look amazing on curvy figures. Wear what makes you feel most alive.
Confidence is the Best Accessory
The key to looking amazing in any outfit isn’t the gown—it’s how you feel in it. When you wear something that makes you feel powerful, sexy, and confident, it shows. As the fashion world continues to embrace all body types, curvy women now have more choices than ever before—and it’s only getting better from here.
Final Thought:

A coalition of more than 490 youth organizers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), comprising both substantive and deputy youth organizers from across the country, has declared firm and unwavering support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 2026.
The declaration was made at a strategic meeting held on July 29, 2025, where representatives from various constituencies affirmed their belief in Dr. Bawumia’s “exceptional leadership, proven track record, and vision for Ghana’s future.”
In a statement issued after the meeting, the coalition praised Dr. Bawumia for his “unwavering commitment to national development, digital transformation, sound economic reforms, and consistent dedication to empowering Ghana’s young people.”
They added that his “innovative policies and forward-looking governance approach make him the ideal leader to steer Ghana beyond 2028.”
As a symbolic show of loyalty, the group announced plans to mobilize resources and pick up Dr. Bawumia’s nomination forms on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.
“Our goal is to energize the youth base nationwide, ensuring a strong and vibrant grassroots presence ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle,” the statement read. “We believe in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to build a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous Ghana. Our pledge today is not just a political endorsement; it is a solemn commitment to securing a better future for the next generation.”
The coalition further called on “all well-meaning Ghanaians, especially the youth, to unite behind Dr. Bawumia in his continued pursuit of economic resilience, job creation, and national progress.”
The statement concluded with the endorsement of Dr. Bawumia’s candidature “with the blessings of our Regional Youth Organizers and a majority of polling station youth organizers.”
An aircraft engineer has called for the immediate dismissal of anyone found responsible for lapses in the servicing of the Z-9 helicopter that crashed last Wednesday, killing eight people — three military officers and five civilians.
Dr. Rebert Nestor Otoo, a British Army aircraft engineer, explained that before any aircraft takes off, it undergoes a series of rigorous servicing procedures.
“Before an aircraft takes off, there are people who carry out service work on it,” he said.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, he outlined that after servicing, ground testing must be conducted to ensure every component is functioning properly. Following certification, the aircraft then undergoes air testing before being cleared for flight.
“After all these tests are done and found satisfactory, the aircraft is made ready to fly,” Dr. Otoo added.
He urged authorities to review the service log from the day of the incident to identify those assigned to work on the helicopter before its departure.
“I am calling on authorities to open the service book on the day of the incident to see those who were assigned to work on the plane before take-off, to ascertain which work was not done diligently enough, leading to the disaster that befell the entire nation,” he said.
Dr. Otoo stressed that if any negligence is established, those involved should be dismissed and sanctioned.
He also rejected claims that Ghana’s aircraft are too old, arguing that poor maintenance — not age — is the primary cause of deterioration.
“These machines are built to last longer. They only need servicing to keep them fit for purpose. This is why I’m calling for an investigation, and whoever didn’t do due diligence should be sacked,” he emphasised.
The British Army engineer further appealed for transparency in the ongoing probe. “Investigators should publish the outcome of the aircraft examination,” he added.

The crash represents a significant blow to the current administration, losing two cabinet ministers and a senior security official in a single incident with the timing of the tragedy, occurring during the launch of the rCOMSDEP, heightening the national impact of the loss.

First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Zakari Mumuni, has described market interventions such as the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), as well as the Gold for Oil (G4O) as significant contributors to the macroeconomic stability of the country.
The Deputy Governor who disclosed this at ‘CNVERGE’25’, Africa’s Premier Trade Banking thought impact event in London said within the context of the current highly uncertain and volatile global environment, commodities have garnered significant policy attention and occupy a central position in finance, trade, and national development.
The conference held from August 6th to August 8th, 2025, under the theme, “Rethinking Commodity Finance for Growth” explored actionable pathways to unlock financing, manage risk, and enable sustainable trade growth for African economies.
He said, “On all counts, the DGPP has impacted positively, with strong reserve accumulation, stability in the exchange rate, and easing inflation. These have helped to improve the country’s credit profile from restrictive default to B- with a stable outlook in June 2025, boosting investor confidence”.
All these developments have contributed to a stable macroeconomic environment, which is of critical interest to your work.
Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) was launched in June 2021 to increase the Bank’s gold reserves by 100% within five years which at the time was 8.74 tonnes.
He said the DGPP programme was not only about reserve accumulation but also about unlocking the potential of the country’s commodity base as well as diversify the Bank’s FX reserve portfolio.
“It also leveraged the Bank’s gold holdings to raise cheaper short-term and collateralised financing, build confidence with stronger reserves and a stable currency,” it added.
According to him, the Gold for Oil (G4O) initiative in 2022 was a well-intended policy solution to moderate the adverse effects of escalating domestic ex-pump petroleum prices, which surged as high as 230% in one year, as international crude oil prices rose sharply.
“The G4O intervention, therefore, leveraged the DGPP framework to provide FX and gold to support the importation of petroleum products through government-to government arrangements,” he said.
“On all counts, the DGPP has impacted positively, with strong reserve accumulation, stability in the exchange rate, and easing inflation. These have helped to improve the country’s credit profile from restrictive default to B- with a stable outlook in June 2025, boosting investor confidence,” he added.

In Ghana’s Oti Region, a landmark drilling phase for the country’s inaugural iron ore resource estimation has concluded, funded entirely by Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC.
The project, led by local firm Africa Exploration and Minerals Group Ltd (AEMG), unfolded at the Gyamurume Iron Ore Block and signals Ghana’s entry into the global iron and steel arena.
Republic Bank’s Managing Director, Dr. Benjamin Dzoboku, emphasized the bank’s commitment to transformative development: “While others stepped back, we stepped forward because we believe in Ghana and African enterprise.”
He noted the bank’s $19.5 billion asset base and 187-year legacy, positioning it as a catalyst for resource-driven growth. The project adhered strictly to local content standards, with 100% Ghanaian expertise a point hailed by geological consultants as a triumph for national self-reliance.
AEMG CEO Isaac Obeng Darko credited Republic Bank as the sole financier of this “historic moment,” revealing early signs of additional high-value mineral discoveries beyond iron ore. Samples now head to Intertek Minerals for analysis, with results expected swiftly.
Deputy CEO of Ghana’s state steel agency, Philip Oppong Amponsah, projected the Oti Region as a future iron ore hub, while local leaders anticipate job creation and infrastructure upgrades.
As the nation eyes industrialization, this venture underscores how strategic finance can unlock mineral potential. Republic Bank’s gamble may soon ripple across Africa’s mining landscape.
Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers is private legal practitioner
Private legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to withdraw from the Tamale Central by-election as the “greatest tribute” to the late Member of Parliament for the constituency, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Tuesday, August 12, Brako-Powers said the NPP’s decision demonstrated emotional intelligence in politics and a deep sense of respect for the late minister’s memory.
“If you ask me, I’ll tell you that this is the greatest tribute in honour of Murtala Mohammed than anything that I’ve heard or read,” he said.
We expect NDC to exit Akwatia contest as we have done for Tamale Central – Nana B
He emphasised that politics should not always be about competition, especially during moments of national grief.
“Politics has to be conscious. Sometimes you read the room. That’s why psychologists talk about emotional intelligence, and I think the NPP has exhibited that strongly,” he added.
Brako-Powers urged political leaders to consider the moral weight of their decisions, noting, “At a point, let us demonstrate that politics must first be of our conscience.”
He also stressed that the incident should serve as a “inflection point” for Ghana to tackle the menace of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, with greater urgency.
NPP withdraws from Tamale Central by-election
“The death of the eight should be an inflexion point for us, and it should be a wakeup call for us to jolt us out of our slumber and tackle galamsey head on,” he added.
According to him, the fight against galamsey has been hindered by the heavy financial resources, influence, and political connections of those involved, making it difficult for successive governments to address the issue effectively.
While the Electoral Commission is yet to announce a date for the by-election, Brako-Powers believes the NPP’s withdrawal sends a powerful message about the value of empathy in political decision-making.

Prophet Fire Oja is the founder of the Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry
Prophet Fire Oja, founder of the Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry, has faced criticism online after saying the government should provide car and fuel money to prophets who are required to submit their prophecies for review.
In an interview shared on social media, the preacher said not all prophets can afford to travel to the Jubilee House to present their spiritual revelations.
According to him, if the state wants such prophecies delivered, it should cover transportation costs.
‘Give us car and fuel money first’ – Prophet Fire Oja replies government over prophecy scrutiny
“If the government says we should come to the Jubilee House with our prophecies, they should also give us car money and fuel. Not all of us can afford to travel there. If they want to hear it in person, they should take care of our transport,” he said.
His comments came after the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations issued a directive for religious leaders to formally submit any prophecy or spiritual insight of national importance for review.
However, many Ghanaians online believe Prophet Fire Oja’s statement is an indirect rejection of the new policy.
A Plus reacts to Prophet Roja’s doom prophecy about him
One user argued that no prophet should demand anything in return for sharing a message from God, writing, “People have been swayed and are being led by blind men. There’s no prophet who must demand something in return for the message or revelations from God. Learn from the prophets of the Bible. Remember that Paul said the carnal or materialistic man is bound?”
Another commenter described the preacher as a con man hiding behind religion, saying, “You don’t need a soothsayer to tell you the modus operandi of these conmen disguised as prophets. In their minds, a plethora of Ghanaians are impressionable, especially when the discourse revolves around religion, spirituality, divination, and so forth. In the end, they win.”
A netizen also accused him of looking for a way to take money from the state, writing, “He just wants to cash out. They predict something that is likely to happen in some form and exploit the system.”

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine (9) radio stations in Ghana for various infractions.
This follows the expiration of the 30-day grace period granted by the President to the defaulting stations to rectify violations of the laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana.
In a press statement on August 12, 2025, the NCA said, “Six (6) stations failed, refused, and neglected to comply with the regulatory amnesty by taking no action. Consequently, the operations of the following stations have been suspended.”
The Authority had earlier ordered the shutdown of 62 radio stations for failing to comply with broadcasting regulations. Shortly after, President John Dramani Mahama granted a 30-day grace period to the affected stations to comply.
However, the NCA said Donplus Multimedia Limited (105.9 FM) in Ho, Dreams Ghana Media Limited (104.9 FM) in New Abirem, Jam Multimedia Limited (101.3 FM) in Kintampo, Jewel Group Limited (102.7 FM) in Duayaw Nkwanta, Kpandai Star Community Radio (107.3 FM) in Kpandai, and Unique Gateway Communication Limited (105.7 FM) in Nkawkaw failed to comply.

A Tanzanian national has been named among four foreign suspects accused of conspiring to supply one of the world’s most violent drug cartels with a cache of military-grade weapons worth $58 million (Sh145 billion).
Subiro Osmund Mwapinga was arrested in Accra, Ghana, on April 8, 2025, after U.S. authorities issued an urgent Interpol “diffusion” alert. Ghanaian police, acting on intelligence from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), detained him and later extradited him to the United States on July 25.
He now faces trial in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia alongside co-defendants from Bulgaria and Kenya. If convicted, he could face between 10 years and life in prison.
Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to The Citizen that it has been informed and is making a close follow-up on the case, including Mwapinga’s extradition to the US.
How the conspiracy unfolded
According to an indictment unsealed by the US Department of Justice, Mwapinga was allegedly recruited in late 2022 by Ugandan national Lt (rtd) Michael Katungi Mpeirwe, who in turn had been brought into the network by Kenyan Elisha Odhiambo Asumo.
Asumo was allegedly recruited by the cartel’s initial contact, Bulgarian arms broker Peter Dimitrov Mirchev.
The four are accused of attempting to sell advanced weaponry to the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) – an offshoot of the Sinaloa cartel designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist organisation.
The cartel’s wishlist included ZU-23, the anti-aircraft weapon system – a twin-barrel autocannon capable of firing multiple rounds per second – used to neutralise low-flying aircraft, drones and armoured vehicles.
Other items on the list were machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, battle tanks, in addition to large quantities of small arms.
Prosecutors say Mirchev, the alleged mastermind, maintained a “weapons log” listing the cartel’s requirements. The group hoped to deliver the arms via falsified documentation to make the shipments appear as legitimate exports.
The ‘test run’ that exposed the network
Mwapinga’s primary role, prosecutors allege, was to help obtain a fraudulent Tanzanian End-User Certificate (EUC) claiming that a shipment of 50 AK-47 rifles and ammunition was intended for Tanzanian security forces.
The shipment was blocked. In reality, the weapons were allegedly bound for the CJNG as part of a trial run before the larger deal.
The forged EUC stated that the weapons were intended for Tanzania and would not be re-exported without approval from Bulgaria — a falsehood intended to satisfy international arms control requirements.
Court records indicate Mwapinga and Asumo were both paid “thousands of dollars” at different times to attend meetings with cartel representatives in March 2023.
During one such meeting, the cartel allegedly proposed using their East African contacts to facilitate cocaine trafficking through the region.
Global reach, local implications
The indictment says the weapons were meant to strengthen the cartel’s drug operations, which have been linked to mass killings, assassinations, and violent attacks on Mexican police and military convoys. The CJNG has a footprint across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Louis D’Ambrosio say in the indictment that the arrests are part of a campaign aimed at dismantling drug cartels and reducing illegal immigration into the US.
“This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide drive that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organisations (TCOs), and protect our communities from perpetrators of violent crime,” the indictment reads.
The case has raised questions about how the traffickers obtained official Tanzanian arms documentation.
Mwapinga’s co-accused face similar charges of arms trafficking, drug conspiracy, and providing material support to a foreign terrorist organisation. Mirchev is in Spanish custody awaiting extradition, Asumo remains in a Moroccan prison fighting extradition to the U.S., and Mpeirwe is still at large.
According to reports in Ugandan media, Mpeirwe has since denied U.S. charges linking him to an alleged $58 million international arms conspiracy to supply the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).
Lt Katungi currently the director of external affairs for the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU)also its founding director , a political pressure group that has gained attention for its vocal support of First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as a potential successor to President Museveni.

WESTERN REGION’s representative, Owuba, was the highlight of last Sunday’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful (GMB) performance, which was themed “Tourism Night”, emerging as the best among her peers.
The performer took the stage, captivating the audience with her energetic dance to the popular Ivorian music star, Freddie Meiway’s hit song ‘Zoblazo’. She eloquently elaborated on the tourism potential of the Western Region, with Takoradi as its capital.
Owuba further educated the audience on the mystery behind the creation of the Nzulezo village, which is located near the village of Beyin, 90 kilometers west of Takoradi, in the Jomoro District, and the Bisa Abrewa Museum, indicating that the site has sculptural representations of wood, clay, cement, paintings, and photographs in Nkontompo in Sekondi-Takoradi.
The highlight of her presentation was the Ankos Festival performance, which impressed the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, with her dancing skills that precisely mimicked those of the traditional Ankos dancers. Owuba, after the presentation, received great remarks from the judges.
In his remarks, Abeiku Santana applauded Owuba for uplifting the spirits of the audience amidst the loss of the eight personalities, who on Wednesday, August 6, lost their lives following the helicopter crash at Obuasi.
“Since Wednesday, I haven’t smiled due to the tragic incident that has befallen the country, which has to do with the eight lives we lost in the helicopter crash. But trust me, this performance made me laugh and be happy all through. If there is any mark higher than 100, I will give it to you,” he said.
Owuba received three awards, which included the Kivo Woman, Most Eloquent, and the Star Performer on the night, making her the only contestant to achieve such recognition in the 2025 edition of the pageant show.
The night also saw Central Region’s Afedziwa win Best Costume.
The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to pull out of the upcoming parliamentary by-election in Akwatia, scheduled for September 2.
Nana B, as he is popularly known, said such a move would mirror the NPP’s decision not to contest the Tamale Central by-election, following the death of its MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash.
He argued that, given the NDC’s loss of five prominent members in the crash, the party should refrain from engaging in active politics immediately after the state burial.
“We are mourning with them. So, for me, you have a stalwart like honorable from the Eastern Region, I would say that right after the state burial, then we enter into such fierce contest, for me, it will not serve his memory right,” he said on Joy FM on August 11.
Mr Nana Boakye referenced recent incidents, including violent clashes in Ablekuma and the devastating helicopter crash, as reasons to prioritise national unity over partisan competition.
“I believe that right after laying such stalwarts to rest, plunging into a fierce contest would not serve their memory well. With the current mood of the nation, lowering the political temperature would be the right thing to do,” he explained.
He added that even though that is his personal expectation, “we leave it to them.”
The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025, after a brief illness.
He was 40 years old.

National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has urged Ghanaians to focus on offering prayers and encouragement to strengthen President John Dramani Mahama and the government, rather than inundating the nation with further prophecies.
He made the call following last Wednesday’s helicopter crash, speaking at the Muslim funeral rites of the late Alhaji Mohammed Muniru, one of the eight victims of the tragedy.
Mr. Nketia stressed that nothing happens without the knowledge of God, whether described as Allah or the Almighty.
While acknowledging that prophecies have their place, he noted they should not dominate the national discourse at a time when collective resilience is needed.
He called on the public to channel their energy into supporting the leadership in working towards national healing and progress, describing the loss of the eight as a moment to confront the country’s challenges.

Five persons suspected to have been engaging in illegal mining or ‘galamsey’ activities have been apprehended.
They were arrested in an operation by the Western Regional Police Command at Wassa Dormaa in the Wassa East District of the region.
It was gathered that the suspects were part of a larger group of illegal miners polluting rivers and degrading farmlands in the area.
The operation, which lasted several hours, saw some of the galamseyers fleeing the scene.
DCOP Osei Akoto, who led the operation, assured the public of the police’s commitment to dealing with all illegal mining activities in the area.
He emphasised the need for maximum support from the communities and traditional leaders, as they are the custodians of the land and are better positioned to identify areas where galamseyers operate.
“We urge the residents to report any galamsey activities because protecting the environment is a collective responsibility,” he indicated.
Meanwhile, residents in the affected area have commended the police for their actions, adding, “We are happy that measures are being taken to address the menace.”
Some opinion leaders, however, called for more action from the government since the traditional leaders are helpless in dealing with the heavily armed illegal miners.
They also stressed the need for those arrested to be prosecuted.
They cited instances where previous arrested illegal miners were freed, which emboldened other galamseyers, while innocent people who provided information became targets.

The late Dr Edward Omane Boamah was the Minister of Defence
Professor Michael Kpessah-Whyte shared fond memories of his colleague, the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah, highlighting his unique qualities as a strategist and a compassionate leader.
Kpessah-Whyte described Dr Omane Boamah as a go-to person whenever anyone encountered a problem while sharing his thoughts in an interview on Channel One TV on August 11, 2025.
“Dr Omane Boamah was a strategist. When you hit a snag, he presents an idea and points out to us that if we maneuver this way, it would possibly end in that way. That was one unique thing about him,” he said.
Kpessah-Whyte recalled his final meeting with Dr Omane Boamah, which took place on July 30, 2025.
The meeting was attended by President John Mahama and other appointees.
Dr Omane Boamah served as a key resource person, focusing on communication strategies for government officials.
According to Kpessah-Whyte, one particular piece of advice from Dr Omane Boamah has stayed with him.
It concerned the management of party foot soldiers.
“He said, they can barge into your office for favours, but if you can’t help… don’t harm them.”
This statement, Kpessah-Whyte noted, reflects Dr Omane Boamah’s empathetic and thoughtful approach to leadership.

OVER HUNDREDS of patrons, which included both Ghanaians and some foreign nationals, trooped to the Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel, Accra, to witness the second edition of the Accra Bar Show on August 8 to 10.
The first day of the Accra Bar Show began with a master class on mixology and product knowledge aimed at educating participants on mastering modern mixology through a classic cocktails foundation, which was hosted by Chris Beaney. The facilitators were Thanos Krimpouras, Josh Sam, Tapatheo Nyamekye, Richard Yeboah, and Timo Janse.
The day two master class, hosted by broadcast journalist Bliss King, focused on marketing and brand building, which educated participants on building a successful hospitality brand, positioning, and storytelling. The facilitators include Richie Barrow, Caleb Cofie, Nana Opoku Kyei, Alessandro, and Kapri.
On day three, dubbed “Letter to Young Bartenders,” it was hosted by Colin Asare-Appiah and had facilitators such as Cass, Kelvin, Chris Beaney, Cookie, Kamsi Brown, Seraphine, and Tapatheo Nyamekye.
The climax of the event was the brunch held at No.19 to celebrate stakeholders, hosted by Wesley Kesse and Evonne.
Exhibitors for this year’s event were The Republic Bar and Grill, The Macallan, Sahara Solace, GiFFARD France, Napev, Amammere, Campari, Agavita, Jack Daniels, Pebble Ice Cubes, Red Bull, Aperol, Antidote, Monin, Tale, Campari, Kasapreko PLC, Twiga Hill, and Gerard Bertrand, among others.
Founder of the Accra Bar Show, Kojo Aidoo, expressed gratitude to patrons for their attendance at this year’s edition.
He emphasised the need for both international and local bartenders to connect and share ideas to make the industry a thriving success.
Patrons who spoke to BEATWAVES applauded the organisers for the event, emphasising on the need for government to support them to help increase their patronage.
Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has reiterated calls for a complete review of Ghana’s School Feeding Programme, warning that the current procurement-based model is unsustainable.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Mr. Asare said the initiative, which was originally designed to be community-driven, has lost its intended purpose.
“We have always recommended to the government that the School Feeding Programme cannot be sustained in its current form, being used as a procurement activity. In places where school feeding works, community participation is the foundation,” he noted.
He cautioned that if the government continues to pay the same amount for lunch at both the basic and senior high school levels—citing a proposed GH¢3.00 per child—the education system could face serious strain.
Mr. Asare also highlighted the need to extend the programme to underserved areas. While some northern communities have up to 90 percent of their schools enrolled, he said districts such as Ga East—where most schools are private—remain largely excluded.
“We must begin to build community participation into the GH¢2.00 allocation to make it more realistic. The government alone cannot finance the School Feeding Programme,” he stressed.
According to EduWatch, restoring community involvement, where local farmers and households contribute food alongside government support, would improve quality, sustainability, and coverage of the programme.
Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Adomako Kissi, has called for the enactment of a law that would allow political parties to retain parliamentary seats for a full four-year term when vacancies arise, instead of holding by-elections.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, August 12, Dr. Kissi argued that such a measure would help curb the tensions, violence, and security risks that often accompany by-elections in Ghana.
“I support the idea where the seat is left for the party for the four years, so that these hotly contested things based on the current behaviour of Ghanaians will be stopped.
“Because of our Ghanaian nature, and looking at the security issues and the deaths that occur during by-elections, including the near-death of a former Minister of State at Ablekuma North, I think it is worth considering,” he said.
Dr. Kissi stressed that the proposal is not about denying voters a choice, but about safeguarding lives and maintaining peace. He added that once a party wins a seat in a general election, any vacancy due to death or other circumstances should be filled by the same party without contest until the end of the parliamentary term.
“If we want fewer incidents at by-elections, then there should be no by-election. There should be a bill that, once you win the election and circumstances happen, the party should just take over for the four years. I think that convention should hold, and it will make sense largely because of the behaviour of the two parties over time,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not field a candidate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election, following the tragic death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Muhammed, in the August 6 helicopter crash.
Former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene
Former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene has joined Ghanaians in grief following last Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash at Adansi-Brofoyedu in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of two serving ministers and six others.
Kwabena Adu-Boahene, in a solemn show of solidarity, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the nation at large, describing the tragedy as a “national wound that will take a long time to heal.”
He commiserated with relatives of the victims, noting that the incident had robbed Ghana of dedicated public servants and gallant officers whose contributions to national development were invaluable.
Reflecting on a personal connection to one of the victims, Adu-Boahene revealed that the late Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, was his senior during their time at Pope Jones Secondary School.
“This loss is deeply personal for me. Beyond his public service, he was a mentor figure during our school days, and it pains me to bid farewell under such tragic circumstances,” he said.
The eight victims, five government officials and three Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) crew members, were en route to Obuasi when their helicopter went down.
Among them were Dr Boamah; the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; former Minister of Agriculture and acting National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed; National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice-Chairman, Samuel Sarpong; and Deputy National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator and parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections, Samuel Aboagye.
Also on board were three GAF officers: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, co-pilot; and Sergeant Ernest Addo-Mensah, crew member.
Adu-Boahene also remarked that their service to Ghana “will remain a legacy of patriotism and sacrifice.” He further urged the country to rally behind the bereaved families, not only in this period of mourning but in the days ahead, when the pain and void of loss will be most deeply felt.
“This is a time to put politics aside and remember our common humanity. These were men who served their country in different capacities, and they paid the ultimate price in the course of duty,” he said.

A photo of football stars who transformed their look with hair transplants
Hair loss is a common concern that doesn’t spare even the most celebrated athletes, with many popular football players turning to hair transplants to restore their confidence and youthful appearance.
Male pattern baldness can affect even the wealthiest superstars but fortunately, most footballers have enough cash to afford a hair transplant for the perfect look they want.
Today we bring you a list of footballers (past and present) who have undergone hair transplants. Some of the players on the list paid more than £50,000 to get their perfect hair.
Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United star, openly shared his hair transplant journey in 2011, undergoing multiple Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures to combat male pattern baldness, inspiring others to follow suit.
He famously shared a tweet saying “Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant.
I was going bald at 25, why not? I’m delighted with the result.”

David Silva, the Manchester City and Real Sociedad legend, also opted for a transplant to address his thinning hair, boosting his self-assurance both on and off the pitch.
Just like Wayne Rooney, Silva underwent the procedure to restore his hairline, which had been receding over his playing days.
Antonio Conte, the Italian coach and former player of Juventus, underwent a hair transplant to restore his receding hairline, enhancing his public image.
Conte underwent the hair transplant procedure in his native Italy to address his receding hairline and the results have been quite impressive.
After three procedures over the course of almost two decades, he finally resolved the severe hair loss he’s been battling from his early teenage years.
Similarly, Wesley Sneijder, the Dutch football icon known for his time at Inter Milan, chose a hair transplant to tackle baldness, resulting in a fuller, natural look.
These players who under constant media scrutiny, found hair restoration to be a game-changer for their personal and professional lives.
Other footballers have also embraced hair transplants to maintain their iconic looks, with varying degrees of openness about their procedures.
Sadio Mane, the former Liverpool forward, reportedly underwent a transplant to address a receding hairline, achieving a discreet, natural result but he is yet to admit that publicly.
Jürgen Klopp, the renowned Liverpool manager, has been speculated to have undergone a procedure to restore his hair, complementing his charismatic presence.
Klopp has been known to have a receding hairline since his early days as a professional player, just like many sports stars before him, he also opted for an FUE surgery.
While the Liverpool manager has never outright confirmed the speculation, his noticeably thicker hair over the years has certainly been the cause of much debate.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the former Arsenal striker and Kyle Walker, who played for Manchester City, are also among those believed to have had transplants to address baldness, helping them maintain a polished image.
These transformations highlight how hair transplants have become a popular solution for footballers navigating the pressures of public life.

Rwenzori East Regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushiime
Police in western Uganda have arrested a 42-year-old man accused of having sexual relations with his teenage daughter, in a rare case of alleged incest that has sparked outrage in the local community.
Hosea Bikoba, a resident of Mumbuzi Cell in Kasese Municipality, was detained on Friday after police received a tip-off from a concerned resident. Officers found him with his daughter at a hotel in Kasese Town, said SP Nelson Tumushiime, the Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson.
“Incest is a very rare case here. We do not know whether such incidents go unreported or if they simply don’t happen often,” Tumushiime told journalists, adding that the region typically records only one or two such cases a year.
Police say Bikoba was seen with the girl at Trans-Africa Gardens, an eatery they had allegedly been frequenting. Investigators have launched a probe, including a medical examination of the girl, who is a Primary Seven pupil.
Jafali Kigutia, chairperson of Basecamp Lower Cell and the girl’s school PTA head, said he grew suspicious after seeing them together on August 6.
“I first thought the girl had come to pay school fees, but when I observed their sitting posture, I sensed something was wrong,” he said.
“When I questioned him, he openly said the girl was helping him ‘forget the loneliness’ after his divorce,” he added.
Kigutia said he learned the girl had been absent from school for two weeks. When he spotted the pair again on August 8, “eating pork and drinking together,” he alerted police.
A worker at Trans-Africa Gardens, speaking on condition of anonymity, said staff had noticed the man often arrived with drinks, including beer, and stayed late into the evening. “We couldn’t keep quiet after observing such behaviour,” she said.
The girl’s maternal uncle, Hannington Muhindo Kibogho, has demanded justice. A local rights group, Kasese Youth Link for Development, said its lawyers would follow the case to its conclusion.
“It is becoming too much in Kasese…domestic violence, defilement, and now incest. My prayer is that we all take responsibility to sensitise our communities and always report such cases to the authorities,” said the group’s executive director, Ronald Kato.
Police have also arrested two other men in separate defilement cases; Ashraf Bwabojo, accused of simple defilement, and 18-year-old David Atuhairwe, accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl. Both are in custody awaiting trial.
Tumushiime urged parents to safeguard their children and encouraged minors to report abuse.
“If they fear approaching us directly, they should talk to local leaders, elders, or any trusted authority,” he said.
