Be patient, avoid speculation over Helicopter crash — Patrick Sogbodjor to Ghanaians – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

A retired Air Force Officer, Wing Commander Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor, has called on Ghanaians to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue into the helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers.

He emphasised the need to wait patiently for the official findings of the probe. His remarks come after the Ghana Armed Forces announced that they are awaiting examination reports from experts and the aircraft manufacturer regarding the black box.

Speaking to Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, August 13, Mr. Sogbodjor explained:

“It’s not something that can be opened overnight; it has to go to the manufacturers to be opened and decoded. What I can tell Ghanaians is, let’s be patient until the results come out.”

He cited a similar helicopter crash in the United States, where the investigation results were made public only two months after the incident.

Addressing public concerns about whether another helicopter should have been dispatched to the crash site, he said:

“What is the other helicopter going to do?”

The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

Also killed were three crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A state funeral for the victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

Col. Aboagye dismisses mid-air explosion claims in fatal Helicopter crash – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Retired Colonel and security analyst Festus Aboagye has rejected claims that the August 6 helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofoum in the Ashanti Region involved a mid-air explosion.

The crash claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed.

The crew members who died were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on August 13, Col. Aboagye said there is no evidence to support speculation of a mid-air explosion.

“Let me try and clear some of these conspiracies, about somebody emphatically saying that the helicopter crashed mid-air.

“The first thing is that there’s no evidence. The evidence that I have, call it empirical or recorded, is BBC. When the BBC does a report, they have done a lot of fact-checking. So BBC is saying that the eyewitness told us ‘loud noise’, ‘a ‘bang’, suggesting that there was an impact, and then there was an explosion,” he stated.

He further explained that if the aircraft had exploded while airborne, physical signs would have been present at the crash site.

“Assuming that it exploded mid-air, we must see the tops of the trees burnt, which will be part of the evidence,” he said.

A state funeral for the victims will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

Bawumia calls for respectful, ideas-driven NPP flagbearership race

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party members and fellow aspirants to conduct the upcoming flagbearership contest with decorum, focusing on ideas rather than personal attacks.

Speaking after receiving presidential nomination forms from hundreds of the party’s youth organisers on Wednesday, August 13, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the tone of the campaign would be critical in shaping the party’s image ahead of the 2026 general election.

“We are not in a campaign of insults, and we should not be in a campaign of insults,” he said. “It should be about ideas, and that is what will capture the imagination of Ghanaians.”

The former Vice President called on aspirants to demonstrate respect, decency, and maturity as the party prepares for what is expected to be a competitive internal race. He noted that such an approach would inspire public confidence and strengthen party unity.

“I want this flagbearership election to be conducted with decorum,” he emphasised.

While not making a full declaration, Dr. Bawumia hinted strongly at his intention to contest, saying he would formally announce his decision when submitting the forms that were presented to him by the youth organisers.

“The youth are a major asset for our party,” he said. “They represent the future, and they are assets not only for the party but for the nation.”

Watch Ellen Ama Daaku’s ‘unprovoked’ attack on Okudzeto Ablakwa

Ellen Ama Daaku (L) says Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (R) unjustly attacked the Akufo-Addo government play videoEllen Ama Daaku (L) says Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (R) unjustly attacked the Akufo-Addo government

A communications officer of the New Patriotic Party, Ellen Ama Daaku, has been captured on video laying the blame of the horrific helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people at the feet of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Ama Daaku claimed that the ruling NDC is to be blamed for the crash because its actions, when it was in opposition, prevented the nation from retooling the Ghana Armed Forces during the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

Black Wednesday: Why President Mahama did not attend Obuasi event – Rev Dr Wengam

She took aim particularly at the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who she asserted unjustly attacked the Akufo-Addo government over the issue of the country seeking to purchase new aircraft, as well as on matters regarding the then president’s use of private jets for official duties.

“As for you, your witchcraft has made your people die in a plane crash. We are all quiet, but it was because of their witchcraft. Let me explain to you why I said this happened because of their witchcraft.

“Two years ago, His Excellency Nana Addo, through his defence minister, Dominic Nitiwul, went to Parliament and said that we need to retool our military. What transpired? Okudzeto Ablakwa, with his teeth like a plier used to break glass, descended on Akufo-Addo in this country; a whole president,” she said in the Twi dialect.

She continued her attempt at explaining her reason for the above claims, stating; “Anytime Nana Addo travels, he (Ablakwa) goes to the airlines to ask how much it costs. Were we not in this country? Did they call him to order? During that time, if they had been quiet for us to order the planes and helicopters (sic)… we might not have encountered this tragedy.”

On August 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 military helicopter crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi Akrofuom District, Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.

The helicopter was en route from Accra to Obuasi for an event on combating illegal mining.

Among the victims were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Sarpong; former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye; and three crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The wreckage was found burned, with all victims burnt beyond recognition, necessitating DNA analysis for identification.

While the Ghana Armed Forces has announced an investigation into the crash, the actual cause of the accident has yet to be identified, with speculations very rife among a cross-section of the public.

NPP’s leadership apologises for threat to Mahama’s life issued by its foot soldiers

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially apologized to President John Dramani Mahama through the national leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), following threatening comments made by some NPP activists.

During a meeting between the leadership of both parties, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong condemned the remarks, describing them as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”

Bawumia hails NPP youth wing after receiving nomination forms

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep appreciation to a section of the party’s youth wing after they mobilised to collect and personally deliver presidential nomination forms to him.

Hundreds of youth organisers of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, August 13, thronged the party’s headquarters in Accra to pick up presidential nomination forms on behalf of the former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an address following the presentation, Dr Bawumia revealed that an overwhelming majority of NPP youth organisers had urged him to allow them to take the initiative.

“490 out of 552 came to me and requested,” he stated. “The leadership came and requested that they wanted to put their might together and pick my forms for me. I agreed because that was a remarkable vote of confidence in me.”

He continued, “This morning, they have fulfilled that promise they made, and they have picked the forms from the headquarters and have delivered the forms to me today.”

Dr Bawumia commended the youth for their energy and commitment to the party’s future.

“The youth are a major asset for our party,” he said. “They represent the future, and they are assets not only for the party but for the nation. I want to thank them for this major vote of confidence.”

While stopping short of a formal declaration, Dr Bawumia hinted at his intention to join the flagbearership race ahead of the party’s 2026 presidential primary.

“I am minded to contest for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party,” he noted. “I will make a full declaration in that regard when I go on to submit the forms handed over to me this morning.”

The former Vice President also used the occasion to call for a respectful and idea-driven campaign as the party prepares for what is expected to be a competitive internal contest.

“Let us see that I want this flagbearership election to be conducted with decorum,” he urged.

He urged party members and fellow aspirants to uphold a spirit of decency and respect as the race for the party’s leadership gains momentum.

“We are not in a campaign of insults, and we should not be in a campaign of insults. It should be about ideas, and that is what will capture the imagination of Ghanaians,” he concluded.

Sir Obama Pokuase, Fante Comedy granted bail but remain in custody – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Social media activist Daniel Adomako, known as Sir Obama Pokuase, and TikTok personality Prince Ofori, alias Fante Comedy, have both been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court but will spend the night in police custody.

The court granted Fante Comedy bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three sureties, two of whom must be gainfully employed. The suspect is also required to deposit his passport with the police until the court directs otherwise.

Fante Comedy was arrested on Tuesday, August 12, along with two others, over allegations of issuing a death threat and publishing false news linked to the August 6 helicopter crash. His case is scheduled for further hearing on August 25, 2025.

In a related issue, Sir Obama Pokuase was granted bail of GH¢50,000 with three sureties, two of whom must be salaried workers. One must be a government employee earning not less than GH¢3,000.

The Social media activist was arrested on Wednesday, August 13, as part of ongoing intelligence-led operations targeting illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons.

Police say he is assisting with investigations into videos and images allegedly shared on social media showing individuals brandishing high-grade firearms.

The Ghana Police Service, working in collaboration with other security agencies, says the investigation forms part of wider efforts to dismantle networks involved in the illegal possession of arms.

Authorities have so far recovered a substantial cache of illegal weapons and ammunition in the course of the operations.

Man dies after reportedly jumping off Dimples Overpass on N1 Highway

0

A man lost his life on Wednesday after reportedly jumping from the Dimples overpass near the Achimota Roundabout on the N1 Highway in Accra.

It is not immediately clear what prompted the man to jump near the MultiChoice Ghana office.

The victim, dressed in denim trousers and a white long-sleeved shirt, was found lying motionless on the road beneath the overpass. Onlookers had covered his face with leaves as a crowd gathered, waiting for emergency services to remove the body.

While the police have not yet issued an official statement, officers were seen at the scene speaking with eyewitnesses.

Tottenham Hotspur: Work to do after Super Cup collapse – but promising signs for Thomas Frank

0

There’s work to be done for Tottenham; their late collapse was evidence of that.

Indeed, it should concern Frank that his team wilted at the first sign of pressure against a side who have had just two pre-season training sessions in the bag.

But for the vast majority of this Uefa Super Cup meeting that ultimately ended in penalty heartache, there were enough signs to suggest Frank has the basis of a system and approach that can be built on.

His 3-5-2 formation was certainly a move away from last season’s set up but you get the feeling Frank will be flexible depending on the challenge in the coming months, something his predecessor was often accused of not being.

Inside the opening 10 minutes, the approach was entirely noticeable. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario kicked long five times as Tottenham opted to keep their shape higher up the pitch rather than collect the ball deep inside their own half and pass their way up the field.

Ange Postecoglou’s high-risk approach was easy on the eye but the final 18 months of his reign at Tottenham – despite that euphoric Europa League win in Bilbao last May – told us the Australian’s methods weren’t working.

This was a Tottenham performance less to do with capturing the imagination than capturing the victory.

For example, Postecoglou was maligned for a perceived lack of attention to detail in regard to preparing for set-pieces.

It was significant, then, that both of Tottenham’s goals arrived via dead balls.

Expect Frank’s Tottenham to excel at set-pieces in their own penalty box, too.

His Brentford side conceded only three Premier League goals from set-pieces (excluding penalties) last season – three fewer than any other team in the division.

Offensively, Brentford were also one of the strongest. Only four teams – Arsenal (14), Crystal Palace, Aston Villa (both 16) and Nottingham Forest (17) – scored from more Premier League set-pieces last season.

Here in Udine, there were clear indicators that Spurs will develop such strength in the coming months.

This was an effective Tottenham display rather than an enchanting one.

Frank said: “I knew we had to do something different against PSG. It was a special operation. And 2-2 against PSG, I think you take that – that single result is good.

“In spells, we went more direct as we knew we could hurt them. There was focus on set-pieces, but there will always be a focus on set-pieces.

“High pressure is a non-negotiable. We went man for man in some aspects.”

There was a time when the style of play mattered to Tottenham fans. Ask Jose Mourinho. Ask Antonio Conte.

Both received criticism from supporters for their pragmatic styles. Tottenham’s traditions for producing attacking teams still carries weight to this day. It will be interesting to see if supporters get on Frank’s back for his tactical approach if things start to falter.

But winning football matches, regardless of style, will be his priority, as it will be for the chairman Daniel Levy.

NPP youth wing damns arrest of ‘Fante Comedy’, ‘Akosua Jollof’ and ‘Sir Obama Pokuase’

0

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the arrest and detention of two TikTok personalities, Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof, as well as the apprehension of social media activist Daniel Adomako, aka Sir-Obama Pokuase, describing the actions of the Ghana Police Service as “shamelessly biased” and “absolutely partisan.”

In a statement signed by the National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, the group expressed shock that the police would, in their words, “waste resources to arrest and detain young citizens” over comments made in a viral video, which they acknowledge were “unsuitable for the moment” but posed no actionable threat.

While Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof have been arrested for commentary and threats of harm against President John Mahama, the police say Sir Obama’s arrest is in connection with “ongoing intelligence-led operations by the Police and other security agencies aimed at dismantling networks involved in the illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons.

“He is assisting investigations into some images and videos he circulated on social media depicting individuals openly brandishing these illegally acquired sophisticated weapons.”

The NPP Youth Wing emphasised that freedom of speech is a constitutional right, accusing the police of adopting a partisan approach under the current administration. The statement alleged that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), who previously served as Deputy IGP under the NPP government, had shown tolerance for “worse reckless comments and videos” by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the past, questioning what they described as the “intolerance” towards NPP sympathisers today.

The group also criticised the police for what they claim is selective enforcement of the law, citing the July 11 violent attack on former Minister of State and MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, and other NPP members during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun, for which no arrests have been made.

“The Ghana Police Service should not be a wimp for the executive,” the statement read. “Your motto is ‘Service with Integrity’, so we ask you — where is the integrity you speak of?”

The NPP Youth Wing is demanding the “unconditional and immediate release” of the three arrested individuals, stating that their detention “flies in the face of our democratic ethos.”

NPP supporters storm police headquarters over arrest of ‘Sir Obama Pokuase’ – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including the party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, have gathered at the Police Headquarters in Accra to protest the arrest and detention of social media activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuase, and three others.
The arrest is linked to an alleged circulation of images showing individuals openly brandishing illegally acquired weapons.

According to the Ghana Police Service, Mr. Adomako was apprehended in a joint operation with other security agencies as part of an ongoing intelligence-led crackdown on illegal arms possession.

This operation, which has been underway for several weeks, has so far led to the recovery of a substantial cache of illegal arms and ammunition.

Samuel Aboagye, one of the passenger’s on crashed helicopter made phone call that indicated they had difficulty in landing

0

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyemang, commonly known as ‘King Zuba’, has shared some light on last week’s tragic helicopter crash in the Adansi area that resulted in eight people, including cabinet ministers, losing their lives.

According to him, there was a communication from one of the passengers on board with those on the ground via telephone that indicated the helicopter had difficulty landing.

Speaking in a television interview monitored by Graphic Online on The Pulse programme on Joy News on Tuesday afternoon [Aug 12, 2025], Mr Agyemang said at least two passengers on the helicopter, Samuel Aboagye and Samuel Sarpong reached out to other people via telephone moments before the crash and gave an indication they were having difficulty in landing.

He said the helicopter had initially tried to land at the Obuasi Airstrip and later changed to the Ofori Stadium, according to Samuel Aboagye, one of the passengers on board, who had contacted the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi West and had directed that, he should let his vehicle meet and pick him up.

He said the whole of the Obuasi and Adansi area is a forest belt and around this time of the year, the weather is not conducive.

He said even though the investigation has not been concluded to suggest it was as a result of bad weather, “the Obuasi Airstrip is in a forest area, the Ofori Stadium is at Anyinam in between Sam Jonah Estate and Precious Estate and there are trees all over, so if humidity is  not conducive….”

“But then on the aircraft, Honourable Samuel Sarpong, [the Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress] tried reaching Honourable Ohene Agyekum [former Ambassador] on telephone, he called him just between the time that the incident occurred. Unfortunately, Ambassador Ohene Agyekum could not answer the call. Later on when he saw Dr Sarpong’s [missed] call and tried to call back what had happened, had happened,” Mr Agyemang said.

He added: “Samuel Aboagye on the aircraft was able to reach the MCE for Obuasi West to direct that his vehicle, which he keeps in Obuasi should be sent to the Obuasi Airstrip, and that when they were unable to land at the Obuasi Airstrip, he again called the MCE to redirect the movement of his vehicle from the Obuasi Airstrip to the Ofori Stadium. That was the last heard of him.”

Multiple businesses at Nogora Junction, adjacent to Ho Technical University, were destroyed in a fast-spreading fire on the evening of August 13.

The blaze erupted around 6 p.m., engulfing the popular Nogora pub, two boutiques, and neighboring shops, causing losses exceeding GHS1 million.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames erupt without warning. “We grabbed fire extinguishers, but it was too intense,” one pub worker told media, suspecting an electrical fault due to recurring power fluctuations in the area. A shop owner echoed this, noting lights had “flickered all day.”

Ghana National Fire Service crews took over two hours to control the inferno. Ho Municipal Commander Sedem Tay confirmed investigations into the cause are ongoing, dismissing early speculation. “No origin has been established yet,” he stated.

Expert warns of head and neck cancer risks

Dr Kenneth Baidoo is a consultant at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Dr Kenneth Baidoo is a consultant at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

A prominent Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) consultant at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Kenneth Baidoo, has highlighted health risks associated with some lifestyles: smoking, alcoholism, and oral sex.

He explained that smoking shisha and tobacco, consuming alcohol excessively, and engaging in oral sex are significant contributors to the development of head and neck cancers.

Dr Baidoo emphasised the need for public awareness regarding these risk factors, as reported on Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s official X page on August 12, 2025.

“Smoking shisha and tobacco, alcohol consumption, and engaging in oral sex are key risk factors linked to head and neck cancers – Dr Kenneth Baidoo, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Consultant, Korle Bu,” the caption of the post stated.

According to Dr Baidoo, using shisha and tobacco exposes a person to harmful carcinogens, while excessive alcohol consumption can damage cells in the head and neck area.

Additionally, certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), often transmitted through oral sex, are associated with an increased risk of these cancers.

The medical expert urged the public to adopt preventive measures, which include avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, practicing safe sex, and undergoing regular check-ups.

Early detection is crucial for successful treatment, Dr Baidoo stressed, encouraging persons experiencing symptoms such as persistent mouth sores, difficulty swallowing, or changes in their voice to seek immediate medical attention.

Affected families of the helicopter crash may suffer nightmares

0

The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others

Dr Lartey Obed, a mental health expert, has underscored the vital need for specialised mental healthcare services for those affected by the recent helicopter incident.

He said psychologists and mental health professionals are crucial in helping bereaved families and witnesses cope with their grief and trauma.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Dr Obed emphasised that professional care is critical because some affected families may experience severe mental breakdowns and even suicidal tendencies.

He made the remarks in response to a question about the capacity of mental health professionals to assist families and witnesses of the recent military helicopter crash.

Dr Lartey Obed described the crash as tragic, leaving the affected families traumatised, especially those who lost an only son.

“This is not easy for the families. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families.

“Research has proven that when incidents like these occur, and we do not employ the services of psychiatrists, mental health nurses, and counsellors to provide professional help for the affected victims, it could lead to a serious crisis. Those affected may suffer nightmares, mental breakdowns, or mental instability as time goes on.

“These signs and symptoms can expose people to a mental health crisis. Some affected relatives may have suicidal tendencies, and we need to provide them with the necessary support. Imagine a mother who has lost her only son in the crash; without support, such a parent may be prone to suicidal tendencies or even commit suicide.”

He also called on authorities to provide support for the families that lost children in a separate accident, which claimed 16 lives.

The Minister of Energy and Green Transitions, John Abdulai Jinapor, on Tuesday August 12, 2025, joined President John Dramani Mahama to observe the third-day Adua rites for the late Sandapewura Alhaji Limuna Muniru at his residence in Accra.

The solemn Islamic ceremony was attended by family members, friends, political figures, and well-wishers, who gathered to pay their respects to the late statesman.

NPP Condemns Death Threats Against Ghana’s President

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has publicly denounced social media threats targeting President John Mahama, calling the comments “unacceptable and unhealthy for our democracy.”

NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua personally apologized to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) during a rare visit to their Accra headquarters Wednesday, seeking to ease tensions ahead of September’s Akwatia by-election.

The inflammatory remarks surfaced after last week’s military helicopter crash, with some users suggesting “more should have died.”

Kodua firmly rejected this rhetoric: “The NPP would never wish death on anyone, not even a worst enemy.”

He criticized those exploiting national tragedies for political gain and confirmed police had arrested two social media figures ‘Fante Comedy’ and ‘Akosua Jollof’ over threats against the president.

This outreach follows the earlier arrest of NPP-linked personality ‘Sir Obama Pokuase’ in a weapons crackdown.

While condemning rogue actors, Kodua urged both parties to avoid divisive speech, stating such behavior “does not reflect our party’s position.”

The NDC accepted the apology, signaling a temporary détente as Ghana navigates heightened political sensitivities.

Short Senator Styles You Can Rock To Casual Occasions

0

The senator style has long been regarded as a symbol of class, elegance, and sophistication. Traditionally, it’s the go-to choice for weddings, corporate meetings, and other formal occasions, loved for its sharp lines, tailored fit, and timeless charm. However, modern fashion lovers have reimagined this classic look, adapting it into more relaxed versions that are perfect for casual outings. With the right fabric, styling, and accessories, the short senator outfit can easily transition from formal to effortlessly stylish.

A simple yet impactful way to make a senator outfit casual is by changing the fabric. Instead of the typical polished or heavy materials, opting for breathable fabrics like soft cotton, linen, or lightweight blends creates a more comfortable and airy feel. This instantly softens the overall look, making it ideal for a weekend hangout, a casual lunch, or a relaxed stroll. Pairing it with slip-on sandals or clean sneakers adds a touch of ease while maintaining a refined edge.

Another creative twist is to experiment with prints. Whether it’s bold florals, striking geometrics, or abstract patterns, a printed senator set adds vibrance and personality. The key is balance—allow the prints to stand out while keeping shoes and accessories simple. This approach makes a statement without overwhelming the outfit, making it suitable for outdoor gatherings or casual meetups.

For those who enjoy blending tradition with modern flair, pairing the senator style with denim offers a fresh take. Throwing a light denim jacket over a short senator creates a stylish contrast, merging classic tailoring with casual street style. Depending on your footwear—be it sneakers for a laid-back vibe or ankle boots for a more urban look—this combination can work in multiple settings.

By experimenting with fabrics, prints, and layering, the senator style proves it can be both versatile and effortlessly fashionable, no matter the occasion.

NPP apologises to Mahama, NDC over affiliated TikTok users’ remarks on helicopter crash

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has apologised to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama for any offence caused by remarks from individuals affiliated with the party regarding the August 6 helicopter crash.

The apology was delivered during a courtesy visit to the NDC headquarters, where the NPP delegation also formally extended condolences over the tragic incident.

“If anything said from our side was offensive, I sincerely apologise on behalf of the party. Such behaviour is not sanctioned by the NPP,” Mr. Kodua said.

He described the remarks as “unfortunate, condemnable, and not reflective of the party’s values.”

“In moments like these, we must stand in solidarity. The NPP would never wish death on anyone, not even a political opponent. Such statements are harmful to our democracy,” he added.

Mr. Kodua also warned against politicising national tragedies, noting that inflammatory comments had come from both political sides. “Some have accused the NPP of orchestrating these events, while others have suggested they expected more fatalities. These are dangerous sentiments that all responsible citizens should reject,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of social media personalities ‘Fante Comedy’ and ‘Akosua Jollof’ over threats and harmful commentary against President Mahama. The police also confirmed that the arrest of NPP activist ‘Sir Obama Pokuase’ is part of an ongoing operation targeting the illegal possession and public display of high-grade weapons.

The Suspended Chief Justice of Ghana’s judiciary, Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, has visited the Ceremonial Gardens of the Jubilee House to lay flowers in memory of the eight victims who lost their lives in the recent helicopter crash.

In a video shared by The 1957 News, Justice Torkornoo, in the company of her husband, Francis Kofi Torkornoo, conducted the brief commiseration act, which has been ongoing since 7 August 2025, a day after the tragedy.

On 6 August 2025, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 military helicopter crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi Akrofuom District, Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.

The helicopter was en route from Kotoka International Airport in Accra to Obuasi for an event focused on combating illegal mining.

Among the victims were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah; Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Sarpong; former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye; and three crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Ghana’s Top Fisherman Warns of Collapsing Stocks, Demands Action

Fishing

Samuel Tetteh, Ghana’s 2023 Metro Best Fisherman, has issued a stark warning that pollution and toxic fishing practices are pushing the nation’s fisheries toward collapse.

Speaking on Connect FM’s Orokodo News, he accused irresponsible fishers of using dynamite, DDT, and carbide—substances poisoning marine life and slashing annual catches far below Ghana’s 400-metric-ton potential.

“Human waste dumped into the sea and these deadly chemicals are killing our future,” Tetteh declared. He dismissed officials’ focus on light fishing as misguided, stressing that chemical toxins and offshore oil operations are the primary threats. Warming oceans, he added, compound the crisis.

Tetteh challenged the government’s neglect of artisanal fishers compared to cocoa farmers. “Cocoa farmers get price adjustments—what do we get? Who speaks for us?” he lamented, noting minimal budget support forces fishers to self-fund livelihoods.

His demands were urgent: The Fisheries Commission must lead ocean clean-ups and deploy toxin-detection tech to halt contaminated catches. “Identifying poisonous fish is a health priority,” he insisted, urging the Fisheries Minister to engage directly with fishers for effective solutions. “Without intervention, Ghana loses protein and jobs.”

Despite claims from some of his colleagues that he ignores phone calls when needed for a feature, gospel musician Obaapa Christy has shared a different opinion about Sarkodie.

In a recent interview with Nana Romeo, Obaapa Christy noted that she didn’t go through any struggle when she needed Sarkodie for a feature.

She explained that after recording her new single titled “Odeneho,” she had an inspiration to feature Sarkodie, adding that the rapper agreed to give her a verse after her first phone call.

“After recording the song in the studio, I said to myself that I would need King Sark on the song. Fortunately for me, the music producer left some gaps in between the songs, so I took it home and called Sarkodie on WhatsApp because I was in Germany.

“When he picked up the call, he asked me to send the song, and that was when he told me I would hear from him very soon,” she said.

Obaapa Christy added that Sarkodie didn’t hesitate in adding his verse to her new single.

‘If we’re attacked today, the Army can’t respond’ – Solomon Owusu opines

Solomon Owusu is a leading leading member of the Movement for Change Solomon Owusu is a leading leading member of the Movement for Change

A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has urged the Ghana Armed Forces not to regard themselves as being above public criticism.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, August 13, Owusu expressed disappointment over recent comments made by Colonel Retired Festus Aboagye regarding his reaction to last week’s helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and seven others.

“Don’t let the military think they are above criticism,” he stated.

According to Owusu, from a civilian perspective, the way the military handled the situation was completely wrong, although he is awaiting the final report before drawing full conclusions.

“The way and manner they handled this issue was totally wrong,” he stressed.

He further argued that the public has the right to assess the Armed Forces based on their performance during emergencies.

“The Ghanaian can only measure whether or not the Ghana Armed Forces have done well by their actions and inactions after the fact. The visuals we have seen and the whole manner in which the military responded do not give us encouragement,” he noted.

Reacting to claims that the army has only two active helicopters, he opined, “If those that are flying are only two, and one has crashed, it means that today, if we are attacked, our army will not be able to do anything; and so they are useless.”

Owusu stressed that military operations must be transparent and accountable to the public.

“The military must not assume that whatever they are doing, they are on an island and not responsible to us. They have to be explaining matters to us,” he added.

BoG’s gold buffering restores market confidence

0

Dr Zakari Mumuni is the First Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana Dr Zakari Mumuni is the First Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is currently using gold as a central tool to rebuild reserves, stabilise the currency, and restore investor confidence after losing access to international capital markets during the country’s recent debt crisis.

First Deputy Governor Dr. Zakari Mumuni made this known at CNVERGE’25 hosted by the Ghana International Bank (GHIB), adding that the central bank’s strategy of leveraging domestic gold resources has become critical for hedging sovereign risk and insulating the economy from external shocks.

It is recalled that the nation’s macroeconomic troubles escalated in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, which deepened fiscal and debt vulnerabilities. This downturn triggered sovereign credit downgrades and shut the country out of global debt markets, blocking a key source of foreign exchange inflows.

With investor confidence weakened and external funding curtailed, government finances deteriorated and reliance on central bank financing added to inflationary pressures.

“These events exposed structural vulnerabilities in our fiscal and debt frameworks,” Dr. Mumuni said, noting that the crisis forced a rethink of the country’s reserve management strategy to build greater resilience against future shocks.

The policy response’s centrepiece was the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), launched in June 2021 to double the central bank’s gold reserves within five years from a starting point of 8.74 tonnes.

The programme aimed to diversify the foreign exchange reserve portfolio, use gold holdings to secure cheaper collateralised financing, and strengthen market confidence through more robust reserve buffers.

Before the DGPP, Ghana exported nearly all its gold output despite being Africa’s top producer in 2019 and the world’s seventh-largest. Gold accounted for more than half of export earnings but featured little in reserve assets, with the country relying heavily on cocoa syndicated loans and Eurobond proceeds.

Dr. Mumuni noted the gold-backed measures had contributed to exchange rate stability, eased inflationary pressures, and supported Ghana’s credit rating upgrade to B- with a stable outlook in June 2025.

The bank also introduced its Ghana Gold Coin, a high-purity investment product intended as a store of value, inflation hedge, and alternative asset class. It can also be used as a monetary policy tool to manage excess liquidity.

Over the past year, global gold prices have surged to record highs, with bullion climbing from around US$2,100 per ounce in early 2024 to between US$3,500 and US$3,534 in recent months.

Dr Louisa clears narrative of Stonebwoy scrambling for cash at Davido’s wedding

0

Stonebwoy and wife / Credit: Myjoyonline.com

Nigerian superstar Davido’s lavish $3.7 million wedding grabbed global attention, but in Ghana, dancehall star Stonebwoy became the centre of online chatter following his attendance.

In the days after the ceremony, some social media users alleged that Stonebwoy stooped to pick up sprayed cash during the celebration.

While Stonebwoy has remained silent, his wife, Dr. Louisa Satekla, has stepped in to set the record straight.

She explained that her husband only bent down to retrieve a fallen diamond bracelet, not to scramble for cash.

“It’s so crazy how some people think. You can clearly see his diamond bracelet fall off and he bends to pick it up, but because of evil and mischief you choose to believe he picked $1??? Some people’s mindset really explains a lot about who they really are… smh,” she posted.

Videos from alternative angles corroborated her account, showing Stonebwoy bending to pick up the bracelet. The footage also confirmed that he never touched any cash, as an attendee picked up the bracelet and returned it to him.

The clarification appears to have quelled the rumours, with fans rallying behind the couple and calling out those who spread the misleading narrative.

We need to think as one continent – Prof. Douglas Boateng

0

Chairperson of the Public Procurement Authority, Dr. Douglas Boateng, has urged African leaders to see the continent as one people with a shared destiny rather than as fragmented states. He made the remarks while speaking as a panelist at the ongoing African Political Parties Summit.

Dr. Boateng expressed concern over Africa’s current divisions along political and geographical lines, noting that these barriers make it difficult for citizens to travel freely across the continent.

He said such fragmentation hampers development and progress, and called for a more unified approach to governance led by political parties.

Highlighting the economic implications, Dr. Boateng stressed that instead of leveraging Africa’s 1.4 billion population, divisions have confined businesses to small domestic markets, limiting their growth potential.

“We need to think as one continent and not different countries. Made in Africa is what will save us; made in Africa is what will industrialize us,” he said. He further called on African political parties to collaborate to harness the continent’s collective strength for sustainable development.

Crash investigations take time, Public should remain calm – Prof. Agyekum – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Associate Professor of Aviation and Aerospace Services, Kwasi Agyekum, has urged the public to remain patient as investigations continue into the August 6 helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofoum in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Wednesday, August 13, Prof. Agyekum emphasised that aviation accidents are complex and rarely caused by a single factor, making thorough investigation essential.

“Just to let the audience know, there’s no single cause for an aviation accident. Let’s get that truth. It’s a very lengthy process; a detailed process. People should just relax because we want to get it right. No rush to come out with an accident investigative report when you know you have not done enough due diligence,” he said.

Prof. Agyekum, an aviation accident investigator, suggested that third parties might be invited to join the inquiry committee to enhance its credibility.

“Even though it is within the ambit of the military to do the investigation, in this case, I will not be surprised if third parties are being invited because of the high prominence,” he noted.

He explained that had the aircraft been civil-registered, the probe would have followed the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) standard recommended practices, which typically require preliminary findings within 30 days. However, no such timeline applies here.

“If this were a civil registered aircraft, then a lot of times, the organisation and management of the investigative process will be under the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s standard recommended practice. Normally, they are supposed to come out with preliminary results within 30 days.

“For us, that time bar is not applicable; it will be up to the inquiry committee as to when they will give updates. That update may not necessarily come to the public,” he explained.

The crash claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed.

The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A state funeral for the victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

The Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Rev Gabriel Justice Anokye, led a delegation to the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 to pray for the Asantehene and to convey his sympathy message to the King, following the demise of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The delegation also visited the Asantehemaa’s court to officially convey their sympathies to the family and offer prayers as well.

Born Nana Ama Konadu, Nana Konadu Yiadom III was the 14th Asantehemaa and the biological sister of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Oyoko Family confirmed the passing of the second most powerful person in Asanteman to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at an emergency Asanteman Traditional Council meeting on Monday, August 11, 2025.

Prophet Fire Oja standing beside his Range Rover Prophet Fire Oja standing beside his Range Rover

Prophet Fire Oja, founder of the Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry, has stated that his call for government to provide transport support for prophets is justified because he no longer owns a car.

According to him, he has sold his Range Rover to purchase land for his ministry.

The preacher recently faced criticism online after suggesting that the government should give prophets car and fuel money if they are required to submit their prophecies in person to the Jubilee House.

‘Give us car and fuel money first’ – Prophet Fire Oja replies government over prophecy scrutiny

In an interview with Nana Romeo, he argued that not all prophets can afford to travel to the presidency to deliver their spiritual messages.

But speaking on the aftermath backlash he received, Prophet Fire Oja in an interview with Joy Prime on August 12, 2025, insisted there was nothing wrong with his earlier submission.

Prophet Fire Oja draws criticism for seeking state support to share prophecies

“Yes, I said it, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with it. I don’t have a car. It’s not only me; we have a lot of prophets and men of God who don’t have a car. If they want to deliver the message, they have to give us fuel so we can deliver the message to them,” he explained.

When asked about a black Range Rover with a customised number plate that he was once seen driving, the prophet confirmed he used to own the vehicle but sold it two years ago to purchase land for God’s work.

“Yes, it is true. Last two years, but it’s not there anymore because I sold it out to buy land for God,” he added.

Africa’s dependence on imported fuel poses strategic risk – ARDA

0

A 30-day halt in petroleum product imports can cripple Africa’s economies, grounding planes, immobilising trucks, plunging hospitals into darkness, and disrupting supply chains, the African Refiners and Distributors Association has warned.

Despite producing more than five million barrels of crude oil daily, the continent imports over 70 per cent of its refined petroleum products, leaving it highly vulnerable to global supply shocks.

“If imports were to stop, the collapse wouldn’t just be technical, it would be systemic,” Anibor Kragha, the Executive Secretary, African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA), said in an interview during the ARDA Week 2025 conference in Cape Town.

“Today, Africa is deeply reliant on fuel imports, leaving it exposed to shocks with immediate and far-reaching consequences.”

A prolonged disruption in fuel imports, ARDA said, would have severe implications for aviation, transport, mining, construction, and essential services.

Jet fuel shortages would effectively isolate countries, while millions of tonnes of goods, medicines, and food would remain stranded in ports and warehouses, it said.

Diesel-powered generators, critical for hospitals, telecom towers, water systems, and banks, would fall silent, threatening health services and urban water supplies.

Rural clinics would lose power, and major cities could experience water pressure collapse.

Mining operations in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Zambia would halt, affecting exports of copper, cobalt, and gold and resulting in billions of dollars in lost revenue within days.

Although Africa hosts more than 40 refineries, many are outdated, underutilised, or idle.

Nigeria, the continent’s largest crude oil producer, has a nominal refining capacity of 1.1 million barrels per day – including the new 650,000 bpd Dangote Refinery – but still imports more than half of its fuel.

In Congo, plans are underway to double crude output to 500,000 bpd, yet the Pointe Noire refinery processes only 24,000 bpd, with a planned increase to 40,000 bpd, far below domestic and regional demand.

ARDA notes that Africa’s rising population, projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, will drive energy demand to double in the coming decades, further widening the gap unless refining capacity is expanded.

The Association has outlined a strategy to enhance energy security on the theme: “Africa First.”

This includes upgrading and scaling refining capacity, harmonising fuel specifications and regulations to promote intra-African trade.

This would attract investment through transparency and risk mitigation, developing pipelines, depots, storage terminals, LPG plants, and logistics networks, building skills in regulation, engineering, finance, and operations.

Expanding access to clean liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is also a priority, with the potential to create millions of jobs and reduce dependence on biomass.

ARDA is urging governments to streamline approvals for refining and distribution projects, address infrastructure bottlenecks, and mobilise domestic capital, including over $4 trillion in African pension funds, insurance pools, and sovereign wealth funds for energy investments.

The association called for the creation of national and regional strategic fuel reserves, noting that many African countries held only a few days’ supply.

“Energy security is not a luxury, it is a lifeline. Without energy sovereignty, there is no sustainable development. This is about more than infrastructure , it is about Africa’s future,” Kragha said.

He added that strong political will and a unified continental approach were essential to reducing dependence on imports and ensuring long-term resilience.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig insists Thomas Partey should be allowed to continue playing football while legal proceedings against him are ongoing in London.

The Ghanaian midfielder joined Villarreal this summer after leaving Arsenal, signing his contract while on bail over sexual assault charges.

Partey’s signing has sparked attention in Spain and abroad, with Roig reiterating that the midfielder remains eligible to represent the club while the case remains unresolved.

“We must be cautious and wait for justice. Let’s not judge prematurely. Thomas has the right to do his job until there is a conviction,” Roig said following Villarreal’s 2-0 preseason loss to Aston Villa.

“At this moment, Partey is as innocent as the rest of us here. A fundamental right like this must be respected,” he added.

“The English whistled Partey. Not the Villarreal fans. I wouldn’t like our own fans to whistle at players on our team. We must stand with the team,” he explained.

“He is not a convicted player,” Roig stressed, adding that the courts, not the stands, should determine the outcome of the allegations.

Dr. Louisa Satekla, wife of Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy, has addressed a trending social media controversy surrounding her husband’s recent performance at Davido and Chioma’s wedding in Miami on August 10, 2025.

A video from the event showed the ‘Sobolo’ hitmaker bending down mid-performance, prompting some online users to speculate that he was picking up dollar bills sprayed on the newlyweds. The clip quickly went viral, attracting criticism and mockery from certain quarters.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify the incident, Dr. Louisa explained that her husband was simply retrieving a diamond bracelet that had fallen off during the performance.

“It’s so crazy how some people think. You can clearly see his diamond bracelet fall off and he bends to pick it up, but because of evil and mischief you choose to believe he picked $1??? Some people’s mindset really explains a lot about who they really are… smh,” she wrote, sharing a video of the moment in question.

Her response has since sparked mixed reactions online, with fans expressing support for the couple and others calling for restraint in spreading unfounded claims.

The Ministry of Defence has assured thorough investigations into the helicopter crash that claimed eight individuals, including the Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, in Adansi Akfrofoum in the Ashanti Region, on August 6.

Addressing chiefs in Accra on August 13,  the Deputy Minister of Defence, Brogya Genfi, emphasised that the Ghana Armed Forces has commenced investigations into the incident and has also requested international collaboration to ensure a transparent process.

“We also want to assure you that the Ghana Armed Forces has already begun investigations into the incident. We made a request for an international collaboration, and we have received a positive response in that regard.

“We want to assure our chiefs that nothing will be covered, it will be transparent, and the Ghanaian public will know exactly what happened and the cause of this tragic accident.”

He further called on the media to be circumspect in the reportage on the incident.

Meanwhile, the President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Nii Odaifio Welentsi Ill also called for pragmatic efforts to end illegal mining in Ghana.

“Galamsey is what has caused their lives. If you cannot do anything about this, the police can, once and for all we stop this thing. This country should rise up and stop galamsey,” he urged.

The crash claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye, and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong, and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The government declared a three-day national mourning period, which included a flower-laying ceremony from August 7 and a memorial service held on August 9.

A state funeral for the victims will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

Earlier on Wednesday, August 6, the Ghana Armed Forces reported that the Z-9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, had gone “off the radar.”

The aircraft departed Accra at 09:12 local time (GMT) and was heading to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining event. Its disappearance triggered an immediate search-and-rescue operation, which later confirmed that all eight people aboard had died.

NPP distances itself from death threats against Mahama

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned and distanced itself from death threats targeted at President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, assuring that such conduct does not reflect the party’s values.

General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Koduah, made the remarks during a visit to the national headquarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), where he met with the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah and other executives on Wednesday, August 13.

“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party. But when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party,” Koduah said.

He acknowledged that inflammatory remarks have been made by individuals linked to both the NDC and NPP, but stressed that wishing death on anyone, let alone a political opponent, undermines democratic values.

“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy.

“So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologise to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” he emphasised.

The comments follow the Ghana Police Service’s investigation into a viral TikTok video in which an individual is heard issuing threats against President Mahama and the First Lady.

Police confirmed that the video, widely circulated on social media, contains statements deemed to be threats to the lives of the  President and his spouse.

So far, two suspects, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, have been arrested and are in police custody, assisting with investigations. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons connected to the recording and distribution of the video.

Meanwhile, an Accra Circuit has granted Prince Ofori 100,000GHS bail with three sureties to be fulfilled by two gainfully employed persons. The suspect is also required to submit his passport to the police until the court determines otherwise, and reappear before the court on August 25, 2025.

Dr. Johnson Asiama

The Bank of Ghana has announced a new set of regulatory measures to check high Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) in banks and other financial institutions in the country.

The Central Bank, in a statement, said this action is in response to dealing with increasing risks to the industry’s profitability, liquidity, and solvency, as well as threats to the stability of the financial system.

The Bank of Ghana, in a notice, added that this action is to re-emphasise existing prudential guidance and highlight additional measures in line with international best practices for managing credit risks.

Maintaining a Robust Credit Risk Management Framework

The Bank of Ghana said this measure will ensure that the banks and other financial institutions will maintain credit risk management requirements and demonstrate the robustness to the regulator.

Observing of Prudential limit on Non-Performing Loans

The Central Bank said this measure will ensure that the levels of Non-Performing Loans to gross loan ratio do not exceed 10% or such levels as may be prescribed by the regulator.

It, however, said microfinance Institutions are required to comply with their existing prudential limit on non-performing loans.

Write off all Fully Provisioned Loans and Loans with No Realistic

It said this action will ensure that all the regulated financial institution, with prior written approval from the Bank of Ghana shall immediately write off NPLs in the loss category, as per the BoG prudential loan classification and provisioning norms, as well as those in the substandard and doubtful categories where there is no reasonable expectation of recovering contractual cashflows promptly.
