After sharing screen space in Aashiqui 2 and Ok Jaanu, the duo is reportedly set to reunite in Mohit Suri’s upcoming romantic drama. This reunion has already created a lot of excitement.

Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur will reignite their chemistry in Aashiqui 2 director Mohit Suri’s next movie. According to a source quoted by Filmfare, the team is still working out the details of the film. Mohit and his creative team are currently developing the story and screenplay, and the actors are eager to sign the project. The source also revealed that the official announcement of the film could be made in the coming weeks. Shraddha and Aditya’s fans have been eagerly waiting to see them together on the big screen again.

Meanwhile, Shraddha was last seen in the horror-comedy Stree 2, which became a major box office hit. The film also starred Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi in pivotal roles. Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 was released on August 15, 2024 and faced a box office clash with Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa. Following the success of the Stree sequel, the makers confirmed a third installment. Stree 3 is slated for release on August 13, 2027.

Aditya, on the other hand, will be seen in Metro In Dino, which also stars Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi and Konkona Sen Sharma. Directed by Anurag Basu, the film marks Aditya’s second collaboration with the filmmaker.

He will also star in the Netflix series Rakt Bramhand – The Bloody Kingdom, produced by Raj and DK. Tumbbad fame Rahi Anil Barve will direct the series.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has referred three ministerial nominees to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report.

The nominees include Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minister-Designate for Finance, John Jinapor as Minister-Designate for Energy, and Dominic Ayine as Attorney General and Minister-Designate for Justice who were named by President John Dramani Mahama.

“I have received on your behalf a message from the office of the President, dated January 9, 2025. Hon. members I will accordingly refer the nominees to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report to the house, it’s so referred.”

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh in response urged the nominees to prepare adequately to appear before the Appointments Committee for vetting.

“We want to caution your nominees to come prepared. It is not going to be business as usual so they should come prepared. I hope you will be prepared if you appear before the appointment committee.”

Ghanaians will punish any government that refuses to deliver on its mandate

The Director of Election and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has urged the Mahama-led administration to prioritise accountability, humility, and truthfulness as it steps into governance.

Dr. Boamah emphasised the need for the NDC to learn from past mistakes and focus on delivering on its mandates to avoid the punishment of Ghanaians.

He further highlighted the importance of being transparent with citizens, especially in times of challenges.

“We went into this election, yes, I had predicted 57.3%, but many disagreed. What this should tell us is that Ghanaians will punish any government that refuses to deliver on its mandate. For me, this is what our party must take into account as some of our people step into government. We must keep this at the back of our minds and serve the good people of Ghana in humility. Where it is impossible to do it, we should be truthful to the people of Ghana and tell them this is not possible, or that it will take some time to fix it. We should be truthful,” he noted in a video shared on X by Metro TV on January 9, 2024.

The Director of Elections and IT expressed concern over the state of government institutions, describing them as decaying and pervasive.

He mentioned the Electoral Commission and the Judicial Service as examples of institutions that need reforms.

“There are a lot of our institutions that are decaying, and it’s pervasive. Look at the Electoral Commission, look at the judiciary, and many others. We need to right the wrongs. We need to fix our country so that not just our generation, but the generations yet unborn, shall be proud that there came a generation that saw the wrongs that had gone on over the past eight years and were determined to address them. Look, I went into this election with a maximum estimate of 169 parliamentary seats. As we speak, the NDC is above 180,” he added.

Dr. Boamah also lauded President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, highlighting his commitment to truthfulness and accountability.

”And that is why I’m happy. President Mahama spoke extensively about being truthful. President Mahama is committed to ensuring accountability,” he added.

Accra, Jan 09, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has submitted his first batch of ministerial nominations to the Speaker of Parliament for vetting and approval.

This is in accordance with Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

The nominees are Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Minister of Finance Designate; Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy Designate; and Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayini, Attorney -General and Minister of Justice Designate.

Profile of Ministerial Nominees:

Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson is an Economist, Chartered Accountant, and Tax Practitioner with extensive experience in public finance, macroeconomics, fiscal policy, tax policy, and business management.

A five-term lawmaker, Dr Forson holds a PhD in Finance from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Master of Science degrees in Taxation and Economies from the University of Oxford and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, respectively.

He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from London South Bank University.

John Abdul Jinapor

Mr John Abdulai Jinapor brings a wealth of hands-on experience, competence, and know-how to the energy portfolio.

With his extensive qualifications, particularly in energy economics and finance, he is expected to bring much-needed dynamism and capabilities to transform the energy sector.

Mr Jinapor holds a Master of Arts Degree (MA) in Economic Policy Management, an MBA in Marketing and a Master of Science (MSc) in Development Finance from the University of Ghana.

He also holds a Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Energy Economics from GIMPA and a Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Financial Law from the University of London.

Dominic Akuritinga Ayini

Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine is a senior lawyer with three decades of experience in practice. He previously served as Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice and is the founding partner of Ayini & Partners Law Offices. He holds a PhD. in law from Stanford University, a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Michigan Law School, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ghana. He has also lectured at the University of Ghana Law School for many years.

Israel Commits To Invest in Ghana’s Solar Energy System

 

The Ambassador of the State of Israel to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has announced his government’s commitment to invest in Ghana’s solar energy system to enhance the country’s electricity supply.

According to Ambassador Gilad, this investment in solar energy can contribute to a more consistent and reliable electricity supply while promoting sustainability, energy independence, and economic growth.

The initiative aims to reduce Ghana’s reliance on fossil fuels, thereby enhancing energy security and mitigating the impact of price volatility.

“Israel has demonstrated significant economic progress, particularly in developing industries and advancing technology. Given the abundant sunlight in Ghana, Israel possesses cutting-edge technology in solar energy that could support the country’s development in this field,” stated Amb. Gilad.

Israel’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sharren Haskel, emphasised that following a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the current government is deeply focused on agriculture and food security, exploring how Ghana can leverage Israel’s expertise in agricultural technology.

“Israel has pioneered advanced agricultural technologies that can greatly benefit our collaboration in this area. Moreover, our partnership extends beyond technology to cultural issues, such as early childhood education and the empowerment of women. We have implemented various programmes, and there are numerous fields where we can collaborate. I look forward to discussing these opportunities further,” she added.

In the wake of the recent terrorist attack by Hamas in southern Israel, the Deputy Minister, Sharren Haskel, addressed concerns regarding travel safety to the country, highlighting that many nations have recently lowered their travel warnings for Israel.

“We are actively working on expanding all travel routes in and out of the country,” she stated.

The Deputy Minister assured potential visitors that Israel is safe for travel and that the nation is well-prepared to handle extreme situations.

She emphasised the defensive measures in place, noting that nearly every home in Israel is equipped with a shelter. “When an alarm sounds, residents can quickly take refuge in these shelters, ensuring their safety,” she explained.

Sharren Haskel further elaborated on the preparedness of Israeli citizens, stating that they are well-informed and ready for emergencies.

She added that advanced technology has been developed to counter missile and drone attacks, enabling Israel to intercept most threats. “This makes Israel one of the safest places to travel, even amid regional conflicts,” she asserted.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the events of October 7, she praised the resilience of the Israeli people in rebuilding both human resources and infrastructure.

“Throughout our history, we have faced difficult times, yet many companies are investing in Israel and looking to expand,” she remarked.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that even during conflicts, the dedication and productivity of the Israeli workforce remain strong. While acknowledging that rebuilding will require time and substantial investment.

“Numerous international companies recognize our capacity for growth and innovation,” she stated.

Looking ahead, Sharren Haskel outlined plans for the upcoming year, focusing on economic recovery and business investments.

She expressed a desire to foster collaboration with international partners, stating, “Together, we can achieve great things.”

Kejetia traders worried over recent market fires

Traders at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi are growing increasingly uneasy following recent fire outbreaks in major markets across the country earlier this month. They are calling on the government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to ensure the safety and security of their market.

The traders expressed concerns about the lack of support and reconstruction efforts following a fire that gutted part of the Kejetia Market two years ago. According to them, the affected shops remain unrepaired, leaving many traders stranded and unable to work.

President of the Federation of Traders at Kejetia Market, Nana Kwesi Prempeh said the recent fire incidents in places like Katamanto, Kwadaso Wood Market, and Tamale Timber Market have heightened their fears.

“These recent fire outbreaks make us very apprehensive because two years ago, we experienced a similar situation here at Kejetia. Unfortunately, repair works have not been done, and traders affected by the fire have been left on their own. We have also heard rumours of attempts to cause arson in markets during election periods, which has kept us on high alert,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional Office of the Ghana National Fire Service has also cautioned traders to adhere to fire safety protocols. A representative of the service advised market managers and traders to strictly enforce rules, such as prohibiting cooking in the markets.

“Some traders secretly use gas cylinders in the market despite the ban. They should remember that their investments are at risk, and if a fire destroys the market, it is their livelihood that suffers,” the officer said.

Nana Kwesi Prempeh has called for an emergency meeting involving market managers, traders, and government officials to address fire safety concerns. He proposed strict enforcement of market bylaws, including regulating opening and closing times, to reduce the risk of fires.

Traders are urging authorities to prioritise the safety of the Kejetia Market, noting that delays in addressing these issues could lead to more losses and disruptions to their businesses.

Belgian Foreign Minister backs Ghana’s economic development plan

Mr Bernard Quintin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade, and the Federal Cultural Institution of Belgium, has hailed Ghana’s robust economic development agenda to create opportunities and enhance intra-African and global trade.

He expressed satisfaction with Ghana’s cocoa, which was produced partly for the national market and export.

“It is important to export to have forex to make your economy work and translate into a better social life,” he said at a press briefing in Accra.

Mr Quintin was directed by Ms Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, to represent the European Union (EU) at the inauguration ceremony of President-elect John Mahama on January 7, 2025.

The inauguration ceremony is a significant moment for Ghana, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history.

The high-level EU delegation has demonstrated commitment to Ghana as a partner in sustainable and inclusive development and regional security.

Mr Quintin was impressed by the number of more than 20 heads of state who were present at the inauguration ceremony.

Mr Quintin’s visit demonstrated the importance of the relations between Belgium, the European Union, and Ghana and the shared desire to strengthen the partnership in the political, economic, and human domains.

“It is so important to come for this ceremony because Ghana is a very important partner of Belgium and the European Union in Western Africa, not only in trade traditionally, but also in security matters.

“The EU has become Ghana’s first partner in security matters,” he said.

As the EU’s representative, he reaffirmed the EU-Ghana partnership priorities on job creation, economic diversification, sustainability, regional security, and others.

He met with Ghanaian and African leaders to discuss key issues such as the security situation in the Sahel, the fight against jihadism, and economic development opportunities.

These matters, the Belgian Foreign Minister stressed, were of common concern and underlined the importance of effective collaboration between European and African partners.

He expressed happiness about the programme of President John Mahama and his new administration, particularly with the accountability and the fight against corruption.

“We do think that accountability is important, and we certainly support this new administration in this business-minded environment and all the important elements that were said in President Mahama’s inauguration speech,” he said.

President Mahama’s four key policy areas are economic restoration and stabilization, improvement of the business and investment environment, governance and constitutional reforms, accountability, and the fight against corruption.

Mr Quintin and his team had an audience and lunch with Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, met with Omar Touray, President of ECOWAS, and had bilateral meetings with regional leaders.

The team also visited Niche Cocoa, a Ghanaian company receiving Belgian funding via BIO-Invest.

The Belgian Foreign Minister was accompanied by Mr Irchad Razaaly, EU Ambassador to Ghana; Mrs Carole van Eyll, Ambassador of Belgium to Ghana; Mrs Sibille de Cartier d’Yves, Belgium Special Envoy for the Sahel and West Africa; and Mr Philip Haspeslagh, Adviser to the Belgian Foreign Minister.

Old students of Wesley Girls Senior High School have taken to social media to celebrate a historic moment for Ghana and their alma mater.

This was on the back of the coming into office of Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the first female vice president of the Republic of Ghana.

Professor Naana Jane Opuku-Agyemang was sworn in on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square, where she took her vice presidential oath of office.

Reacting to this historic achievement, two alumni of the Wesley Girls took to TikTok to mock their rivals, bragging that their school has produced Ghana’s first female vice president in the person of Professor Naana Jane.

In the TikTok video sighted by YEN.com.gh, the two ladies, clad in their school’s uniform, danced to the Kwen Kwen campaign song of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Mood because even if you say Geyhey lost NSMQ, we can say bring your vice president and CJ,” the caption on the video read.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang is an old student of the Wesley Girls Senior High School, completing her secondary education in 1971.

After her time at the Central Region-based secondary school, Professor Naana Jane enrolled at the University of Cape Coast, where she was awarded a B.Ed.(Hons) in English and French in 1977.

Before breaking the glass ceiling as Ghana’s first female vice president, Professor Naana Jane previously served as the minister of education between 2013 and 2016.

She had also earlier set the record as the first female vice-chancellor of a public university in Ghana, serving the University of Cape Coast until her subsequent appointment as the education minister.

Mahama takes presidential oath of office

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that President Mahama took his presidential oath of office as the sixth president of the Republic of Ghana.

This makes Mr Mahama the first Ghanaian president to take the oath of office three times.

He previously took the oath in 2012 following the passing of President Atta Mills, and then in 2013 after winning the 2012 presidential election.

Mozambique’s opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane has returned home from exile where he has been in hiding following October’s disputed presidential election that sparked deadly protests.

Mondlane landed at the main airport in the capital, Maputo, on Thursday morning amid tension and heavy security, with thousands of people having gathered to welcome him.

He said he was returning to be closer to the protest movement that has seen weeks of nationwide demonstrations in which dozens of people have been killed.

His return comes ahead of next week’s swearing-in as president of Daniel Chapo, of the ruling Frelimo party, who was confirmed as the winner of October’s poll by the constitutional court.

After having emerged from the airport building, video shows Mondlane kneeling on the ground with a Bible in his hand being cheered by supporters.

He began to pray and swore to serve the people of Mozambique as the president elected by the people and not by a court.

In his first comments Mondlane said that he was ready to talk about how to resolve the tension over the disputed poll, which he says was stolen from him.

“I’m here in the flesh to say that if you want to negotiate… I’m here,” he said.

Mondlane has been organising protests through broadcasts on Facebook, but over the weekend announced his impending return, saying they “don’t need to chase me anymore”.

In a defiant message he said: “If [the authorities] want they can kill me, but the fight will continue”.

Ahead of his landing, the airport was heavily guarded with police officers trying to prevent Mondlane’s supporters from reaching the area.

Roads leading to the airport were blocked with security forces restricting people from getting to the airport unless they had a ticket for a flight.

Tear gas was fired on crowds in the area and snipers were positioned on buildings nearby, the Reuters news agency reports.

Mondlane said his return was “a unilateral decision” that did not result from any political agreement.

He maintains he won the election and has previously said he would install himself as president on 15 January.

The final official results from the constitutional court two weeks ago gave Chapo 65% of the vote and Mondlane 24%.

Since the October election, waves of protests have left more than 270 people including protesters, children and members of the security forces dead, according to rights groups.

Asokwa Municipal Assembly expresses concern about attacks on assembly members

Kumasi Jan 09 – GNA – The Asokwa Municipal Assembly has condemned the unprovoked attacks by alleged NDC foot soldiers on some assembly members in the municipality.

Nana Yaw Wiredu, the Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly, said the violent attacks being orchestrated by certain elements in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), if not stopped immediately could degenerate into conflict in the municipality.

In a statement issued in Kumasi, Nana Wiredu pointed out that, the physical attack on Mr Raymond Opoku Agyemang, the Assembly Member for Atonsu-Agogo South electoral area, by some NDC foot soldiers over an Astroturf on Tuesday January 08, 2025, was uncalled for and needed to be investigated.

Mr Opoku Agyeman was said to have received severe beatings from the thugs when he tried to mediate in a confrontation between the NDC foot soldiers and management of a local football club in the area on the use of the newly constructed Astroturf in the electoral area.

The NDC thugs, allegedly led by one Issaka, invaded the park while the team was training and demanded their immediate vacation from the park.

Despite attempts by the team Manager to resolve the issue amicably, the foot soldiers remained adamant, and this resulted in altercations between the thugs and the management of the team.

Mr Opoku Agyeman, who was notified about the situation and was invited to intervene, was subjected to severe beatings.

Attempts to explain that the football team had received official approval from the Municipal assembly to use the park did not go down well as the thugs numbering about 20 subjected him and other team managers to severe beatings.

Nana Wiredu in the statement described the assault as appalling and intolerable and called on law enforcement authorities to promptly investigate the matter and ensure that the culprits faced the full rigours of the law.

He expressed dismay at the behavior of the NDC foot soldiers, urging the Asokwa Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and mete out appropriate sanctions on the perpetrators.

Nana Wiredu called on the NDC leadership in the Ashanti region and the Asokwa constituency to immediately rein in their members, to desist from such acts since such intimidation and violence would not be tolerated by the Municipal Assembly.

He further mentioned that the Assembly had complied with directives regarding the removal of government appointees, emphasizing that this should have facilitated a seamless transition instead of hostility.

Nana Wiredu assured the Assembly Members of their safety, vowing that the Assembly, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, would take measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

He encouraged the assembly members to remain composed as the process of appointing a new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and other government appointees progressed in an orderly manner.

He said all procedures leading to the appointment of a new MCE and other government appointees would be executed smoothly and peacefully.

PRESIDENT OF the 4 Garrison Officers’ Mess Keep-fit Club (Ridge) in Kumasi, Kwasi Badu, has encouraged more Ghanaians to join Keep-fit clubs to engage in fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle.

He explained that sedentary live styles lead to so many ailments, hence the call for a regular exercise to release unwanted materials from the body to enhance their health.

Mr. Badu said these during an annual dinner organised by the club to support the needy.

At the event, a cheque of GH¢160,000 was given to eight orphanages in the region for their upkeep. The money was solicited through individual contributions from the members of the club.

The beneficiaries include Obeng Kwakye Foundation, Ashan Children’s Home, Kumasi Cheshire Home and Cherubs Home.

Others are Frhab Ghana Charity Foundation, Perfect Peace Foundation, Blessed School and Missionary of Mercy.

Presenting a cheque of GH¢20,000 to each of the beneficiaries, Mr. Badu stated that the gesture was part of the club’s areas of focus and contributions to help put smiles on the faces of the children and other less privileged in society.

“As a Keep-fit club, the passion to help the needy in the society is something that we all cheerish most. When you pay a visit to any of the orphanages here, the conditions there are so horrible that sometimes if you are not careful you may end up crying so we took it upon ourselves to lend a helping hand to them,” he said.

He pledged the club’s readiness to continue to improve the lives of the less privileged in society, and appealed to the heads of the beneficiary foundations to use the money judiciously and for its intended purposes for the well-being of the children.

Mr. Badu called on other groups to support the orphanages to render quality care and support.

He seized the opportunity to invite male interested individuals to join them. “We are about 121 members, and I will appeal to anyone who is interested in exercise to join us,” he added.

Some of the children who accompanied their heads to the event prayed for God’s blessings for the members of the club.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Frhab Ghana Charity Foundation, who spoke on behalf of the other beneficiaries thanked the Keep-fit Club members and urged other corporate bodies and groups to emulate the kind gesture to assist their facilities.

The debate between the two distinguished media personalities stemmed from Kwesi Pratt’s admiration of the loud cheers that erupted from the crowd at Black Star Square during President John Dramani Mahama’s investiture on January 7.

This occurred when the military leader of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, was introduced moments before stepping onto the podium to exchange pleasantries with Mahama.

Reacting to the moment, which has since sparked widespread conversation among Ghanaians, Kwesi Pratt described it as a public endorsement of military leadership over democratically elected leaders. He pointed out that the military leader received the loudest applause from the crowd compared to the other democratically elected leaders who attended the event.

Kwesi Pratt explained that the loud cheers in response to Traore’s presence spoke volumes, emphasising that it represented a public endorsement of military coup d’etats and the opposition to various issues plaguing many African countries.

He specifically highlighted concerns such as neo-colonialism, the struggle for Africans to gain control over their own resources for their benefit, among other challenges.

He was however, sharply interjected by Kweku Baako whose opinion opposed military takeovers.

Expressing his strong disapproval of military takeovers, Kweku Baako argued that such actions have not brought any positive benefits to the continent, citing how past military leaders who assumed power often turned into dictators.

He emphasised that this is precisely why past leaders fought to restore constitutional order, ensuring that leaders are democratically elected.

Kweku Baako: I’m struggling to get the logic of your point. What is it? what was the Ghanaian community who were the majority at the place endorsing?

Kwesi Pratt: They were endorsing the struggle against neo-colonialism, they were endorsing a struggle for African people to take hold of their resources and to exploit it for their own benefits, endorsing a regime that is saying no to foreign military base on African soil. WAPCo’s offshore pigging exercise could trigger energy supply risks

The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has raised concerns over the timing of the planned maintenance activities on the offshore West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), warning that the exercise could expose Ghana to significant energy supply risks.

The mandatory maintenance operation, set to run from January 20 to February 16, 2025, involves cleaning, inspecting and replacing sub-sea valves along the pipeline. Initially slated for October 2024, the schedule was deferred at the request of the Ministry of Energy, according to a statement issued by Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).

Nana Amoasi VII, in an interview with B&FT, while citing that the rescheduling raises critical questions, noted the need for adequate preparations for the supply of liquid fuel to power plants in the eastern corridor of the country.

This is given that the current arrangements will starve these plants of natural gas supply. But with the current liquid fuel shortage, he maintained that the country could be put through another period of ‘dumsor.’

The WAGP serves as a critical infrastructure for delivering natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana, Togo and Benin, fuelling power plants and supporting industrial activities. A disruption in its operations, even temporarily, could strain energy production capacity and potentially lead to power outages or increased reliance on costly alternative energy sources.

The IES Director stressed the importance of creating room for additional liquefied fuel supplies before proceeding with the maintenance work. “If not, considering the current challenges onshore, going ahead with the clean-up offshore will impact fuel supply.”

He also urged GRIDCo to engage the government to extend the execution of the exercise, ensuring preparedness and dispelling any notions that the timing is politically motivated.

Nana Amoasi VII further suggested that proper engagement with the government would enable GRIDCo to conduct a more comprehensive risk assessment of any further rescheduling.

He expressed scepticism about the planned duration of the maintenance, citing previous exercises by the company with exceeded timelines.

“If you defer a planned maintenance unnecessarily, then you are accepting that there can be a false shutdown of the system,” he said. Such delays, he warned, could lead to larger challenges, underscoring the importance of thorough and timely preparation.

GRIDCo’s report on the impending exercise stated that a total of 180 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas is consumed by the Sunon Asogli Plant, Cenpower, KTPP, TT1PP, AKSA, and Bridge Power plants in Tema.

During the pigging period, the WAGP lateral in Tema will be closed, leading to no gas supply for these thermal plants – except those capable of running on liquid fuel. This will require the shutdown of several gas-fired plants in Tema, reducing generation capacity.

Meanwhile, thermal plants in the Western Region—TAPCo, TICo, Karpower, and Twin City—consume about 230 mmscfd of natural gas. Additionally, Anwomaso Thermal Power Station in Kumasi and Genser Energy Power Stations together consume 75 mmscfd of gas. Non-power sectors in the West account for another 35 mmscfd.

With domestic gas production from ENI and Tullow providing a total of 345 mmscfd, the region’s supply will be sufficient to meet demand; even accommodating the 80–90 mmscfd delivered from Nigeria via the WAGP.

To facilitate the pigging exercise, gas production from ENI and Tullow will need to be adjusted to balance supply and consumption. GRIDCo also plans to dispatch hydro plants at high capacity during the maintenance period to offset the thermal generation shortfall in Tema. Akosombo GS is projected to run all six units continuously, while Bui GS will operate its units in staggered shifts to maximise output.

However, the report noted that a deficit in generation capacity is still anticipated, emphasising the urgent need to procure liquid fuel to sustain thermal plants in Tema. An estimated US$89.9million is required to purchase the necessary liquid fuel to meet demand during this period.

A member of the Black Satellites team that won the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, Philip Boampong, has slammed Andre Dede Ayew for allegedly signing an insurance deal without the players’ knowledge.

In his narration, Boampong noted that after they won the tournament, team captain Dede Ayew and some officials signed a deal without seeking the opinion of the entire team.

The defender stated that the deal involved an insurance policy that the players were supposed to benefit from for 15 years.

However, because they had not been informed, none of the players benefited, despite having funds deducted from the financial reward package which was given to them.

During an interview with Global Sports Studios, Boampong expressed his displeasure over how Dede Ayew handled the deal without the players’ knowledge.

“There was an investment, and he [Dede Ayew] was part of it, but we did not know anything about it. We were called for a general meeting and informed about an insurance policy. It was supposed to cover us for fifteen years in case of injuries, but we didn’t know.

“If we had known, we would have sought treatment when we got injured. So, with over 22 players, we were deducted some amount of money, yet we didn’t benefit. At least, he should have told us,” Boampong said in Twi during the interview.

Ablekuma-North: Presiding Officer lays down his tools, re-collation suspended

Accra, Jan. 09, GNA – Mr Vincent Obeng, the Presiding Officer for the Ablekuma-North Constituency, says he cannot continue with the re-collation of the disputed parliamentary results due to “frustration” and chaos that has characterised the exercise.

The EC on Wednesday suspended the re-collation exercise for Ablekuma-North for the fifth consecutive time after hours of altercation over the validity of the statement of results sheets for the collation.

The results for three polling stations are outstanding.

The EC cannot declare the results unless the remaining three are verified and added to the tabulated results.

The Commission said it would communicate its next line of action in due course.

The EC has been relying on the scanned copies of the statement of results sheets from the political parties to collate the results for some 62 polling stations whose pink sheets got missing following the close of polls.

For some 20 polling stations results that could not be verified independently by the Returning Officer, he summoned the Presiding Officers in the effected polling stations to assist with the authentication.

Ahead of Wednesday’s re-collation, there were seven outstanding polling station results yet to be verified.

After hours of heated exchanges between agents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Commission was able to authenticate the results for four out of the seven outstanding polling stations.

Mr Obeng, who was visibly exhausted by the turn of events, expressed frustration about the protracted impasse and urged the Commission to find a new Returning Officer to complete the work.

“It is so unfortunate for me to make this statement that I am done with Ablekuma North. They should find a new Returning Officer to continue their work for them,” he said.

Dr Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training, EC, said the Commission would engage the Returning Officer to rescind his decision.

“The EC has no interest in who becomes the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North,” he said.

Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma-North, said her independent collation suggested that she was leading by more than 300 votes.

“I will fight till the end because I know I won,” she told journalists.

However, Mr Musah Kalamu, Ablekuma-North Constituency Organiser, NDC, said the Party would not accept the results for the 62 polling stations in contention.

“We want a rerun of the elections in the 62 polling stations. We cannot accept the scanned copies of the results presented by the NPP,” he said.

Yet, eight years later, he has staged a remarkable comeback, securing the largest victory in nominal terms under the 4th Republic.

Today, the NPP faces its moment of reckoning after a painful and humiliating defeat. But this is not the end of the party; it is only a test of its resilience. Moving forward, the party must commit to honest, open, and constructive dialogue within its structures to assess what went wrong, acknowledge missteps, and draw valuable lessons. This internal process will lay the foundation for genuine reconciliation, renewal, and progress, anchored in unity.

The NPP’s history is rich with the sweat, sacrifice, and toil of its founding fathers, who faced countless setbacks but never surrendered. From the ashes of defeat, they built a party rooted in principles, courage, and perseverance—a legacy that must inspire us today.
