‘Black Stars are suffering because the team has no blessings’ – Wilfred Osei Palmer

Veteran football administrator Wilfred Osei Palmer has voiced his frustration with the current state of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, attributing their struggles to a lack of blessings from some key personalities in Ghana football.

Speaking on Asempa FM, the President of Tema Youth criticized the way he and others who have significantly contributed to the team’s development have been treated, suggesting that such injustices may be undermining the team’s performance and overall success.

“Sometimes I wonder why people say the Black Stars are suffering, but the truth is that you cannot treat people like this and expect the senior national team to prosper,” he lamented.

Palmer, who has served the national team in various capacities over the years, expressed deep disappointment over how his contributions have been overlooked and undervalued.

“The team has no blessings. This is the national team that I have served and supported, and this is how I am being treated? I am sorry, but I am deeply hurt,” he said.

The Black Stars have faced significant challenges in recent years, including disappointing performances at major tournaments and their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mozambique opens new parliament amid opposition protests and boycotts

Members of parliament prepare to take the official photograph following the swearing-in ceremony Members of parliament prepare to take the official photograph following the swearing-in ceremony

Mozambique has sworn in its new parliament with the streets of the capital largely deserted after the opposition leader called for a strike to protest against the result of highly disputed elections.

Two smaller opposition parties boycotted the opening ceremony on Monday as they refused to accept the outcome of the October election, while the incoming president, Daniel Chapo, called for calm and unity after months of deadly unrest.

Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who is popular with Mozambique’s marginalised youth, claims the results were rigged in favour of Chapo’s Frelimo party, which has been in power for 50 years.

He urged his supporters at the weekend to “demonstrate our refusal” of the official election result with a national strike from Monday to Wednesday when Chapo is due to be sworn in as president.

Military police surrounded the parliament building and police blocked the main roads to the area during the inauguration ceremony.

The city centre, usually busy on a Monday morning, was deserted with most shops closed and protesters manning barricades in certain areas, the AFP news agency reported.

Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller, reporting from Matola neighbourhood, a stronghold of the opposition in Maputo, said people were trying to block a main road into the centre of the capital.

“The aim here by people trying to block the road with burning tyres, with stones – they also throw rocks sometimes – is to stop people passing back and forth on this road and it’s part of the strategy to bring Maputo to a standstill,” she said.

Chapo and outgoing President Filipe Nyusi were present as parliamentarians from Frelimo, which won 171 seats, and the Podemos party – which has 43 – were sworn in to the 250-seat national assembly.

Renamo’s 28 MPs and the eight from the MDM stayed away in protest.

The opening of parliament “constitutes a social outrage and a lack of respect for the will of Mozambicans” who were deprived of “free, fair and transparent” elections, a Renamo spokesman told reporters on Sunday.

The MDM said it was boycotting to show it aligned itself with demands for “electoral truth”.

Official results gave Chapo 65 percent of the presidential vote compared with 24 percent for Mondlane.

But the opposition leader claims he won 53 percent and that Mozambique’s election institutions manipulated the results.

Mondlane returned to Mozambique on Thursday after going into hiding abroad following the October 19 killing of his lawyer.

Thousands of jubilant supporters rallied in the city centre to meet him, prompting clashes with security forces in which at least three people were killed, according to an election monitor.

Unrest since the October 9 election day has claimed about 300 lives, according to a tally by a local rights group, with security forces accused of using excessive force, including live bullets, against demonstrators.

Police officers have also died, according to the authorities.

The unrest has caused major losses to Mozambique’s economy, stopping cross-border trade and affecting shipping, mining and industry.

If “the assembly takes the oath, it is a betrayal of the will of the people”, Mondlane, 50, said via Facebook late on Saturday.

“Let us demonstrate against the inauguration of those who betrayed the will of the people on Monday and against those who stole the will of the people on Wednesday,” he said.

In advance of the opening of parliament, 48-year-old Chapo told reporters that Mozambique needed stability and unity.

With a new parliament in place, “we can continue to work and together, united … to develop our country”, he told journalists, calling for “open, frank debate”.

There have been several calls for dialogue to resolve the standoff but Mondlane has been excluded from talks that Chapo and Nyusi have opened with the leaders of the main political parties.

Mondlane repeated after landing in Maputo on Thursday that he was ready for dialogue. “I’m here in the flesh to say that if you want to negotiate … I’m here,” he said.

Security analyst, Colonel Festus Aboagye (Rtd) has highlighted the significance of President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Bawku following the protracted ethnic conflict there.

President Mahama moved to Bawku on Tuesday, January 14 with the aim of promoting lasting peace in the conflict-stricken area.

His first engagement was with the Bawku Naaba, Zug-raan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the paramount chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area.

He is also scheduled to meet with Nayiiri Bohagu Abdulai Mahami, the overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area.

Before his visit, President Mahama convened a high-level meeting with heads of various security agencies to discuss strategies for addressing the tensions in Bawku, which has been at the heart of decades-long ethnic conflicts between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

In an interview with Channel One TV’s Nana Tuffour Boateng, Colonel Aboagye Rtd. expressed confidence in the positive impact of the President’s visit saying, it will send a strong message to the feuding factions to exercise caution and prioritise peace.

Mahama’s Luxury Car Sparks Public Debate

0

A luxurious vehicle recently spotted at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) during a Thanksgiving event of President John Dramani Mahama has generated intense public interest and debate.

The car, a Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 Xtreme Edition, is reportedly owned by President John Mahama, sparking questions about how he acquired the luxury vehicle.

The Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 Xtreme Edition is a high-end car customized with bulletproof features, a 3.3L V6 Turbo Diesel Engine, and advanced terrain control systems.

With a staggering price tag of $600,000, equivalent to over GHC8milliin, many are wondering how President Mahama procured such an expensive vehicle.

Some have questioned whether President Mahama used state funds to purchase the car, but sources close to the President have clarified that the vehicle is indeed his private property, acquired before the December elections.

The controversy surrounding President Mahama’s luxury car has highlighted the need for transparency and information flow from public officials.

Many have called for an official statement from the Office of the President to clarify the circumstances surrounding the car’s acquisition.

This is not the first time President Mahama has been linked to luxury vehicles.

In 2017, the government took delivery of 34 luxury cars, including 10 bullet-resistant vehicles, which were ordered by the previous Mahama administration.

When John Jinapor takes over as Energy Minister, the headache and excessive expenses that energy users must pay to purchase Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meters may come to an end.

Although ECG meters are not officially for sale, customers can install them at their premises to use power by paying additional service fees.

Despite the agreements, ongoing shortages and the laborious procedures required to obtain a meter force customers to pay middlemen to procure meters.

The trend has led to the rise of scammers and syndicates, some of which involve dishonest ECG employees and contractors employed by the power distributor to defraud consumers.

There have been numerous reports and complaints, with a separate meter that costs a little over GH¢800 cedis being

John Abdulai Jinapor, the Energy Minister-designate, has proposed buying meters in bulk to cut costs and formally offer them to customers at lower prices in order to solve the ongoing problem.

On Monday, January 13, Mr. Jinapor presented a solution to the Appointment Committee for Vetting of Parliament.

People are unable to obtain the meters they desire. We are looking into the potential of selling the meters because technology is developing. Allow anyone to purchase the meters, but we will grant licenses to a select few to install them using smart technology; however, you will need to send a code. Since mobile money can occasionally cost more than four dollars, once you send the code, it is activated and you are automatically enrolled on the system.

Therefore, I’m confident that the price will decrease if you make it easily accessible and take use of economies of scale. Therefore, we are thinking about it.

In the meantime, Mr. Jinapor said that in order to improve income collection, over half of the system’s installed meters need to be completely replaced because they are not operating.

He disclosed that there were 4.8 million active meters out of 5.2 million in ECG.

Nevertheless, “they will need to change a minimum of 2.9 million meters in order to satisfy the market, as approximately 3 million of them are not functioning properly.”

Don’t forget to add the entertainment space to your reset agenda

Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale

Dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known Shatta Wale, has urged the President of Ghana to cause a change in the entertainment industry.

He believes that since John Dramani Mahama is resetting the country, there will be a need for a reset in the entertainment space.

Shatta Wale is of the view that young people who want to pursue a career in the space need to know that it’s business and not just fun.

He made this known in a letter he wrote to the president via social media. His letter read: “Letter to our new President of Ghana. I wish our new president John Dramani Mahama would also reform our music system to attract more professionals on radio and television, similar to the appointment of new ministers when they assume power.

“The entertainment industry needs that change. The younger ones coming can’t go through what some of us have been through. My humble wish… just for the next generations to come and see this music business as a job and not just fun.”

Don’t scrap the COVID-19 Levy; redirect its use for the free dialysis initiative

A widely recognized illustration of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. A widely recognized illustration of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.

Revenue & Financing Fellow, Geoffrey Kabutey Ocansey, has advised the Mahama-led administration not to scrap the COVID-19 Levy.

He has proposed that the government repurpose and rename the COVID-19 levy and redirect its use for other purposes.

Speaking to Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he posited that the COVID-19 levy should be redirected for the use of the free dialysis initiative.

He noted that although the government promised to scrap some taxes, the COVID-19 levy must stay.

“I am appealing to the government not to scrap the COVID-19 levy. They should rename it and repurpose it. What the COVID-19 levy was introduced to do has been achieved. But we can repurpose and redirect it. One would ask how we can redirect the levy. We can redirect it for the use of the free dialysis initiative. We can use the money for the free dialysis because it is faced with challenges.”

He also believes the revenue collected from the COVID-19 levy could be used to complete the Agenda 111 hospital projects and any other health-related infrastructure.

He stated that we could consider removing it or sustaining it after four years since by then, we would have achieved a lot with the levy.

Ocansey underscored the need for the Minister-designate for Finance, Dr. Ato Forson, to deal with waste and compliance issues if he is approved as the minister for the ministry.

E-Levy is stealing from my bank account – Kwame Jantuah laments

0

Legal practitioner, Lawyer Kwame Jantuah Legal practitioner, Lawyer Kwame Jantuah

Legal practitioner, Lawyer Kwame Jantuah, has voiced strong opposition to the Electronic Levy, also known as e-levy, calling for its removal and emphasizing how fraudulent he believes the tax is.

The e-levy was introduced by the previous Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government to tax electronic financial transactions.

The levy applies to various digital payments, including mobile money transfers, bank transfers, and payments made via online platforms.

The government introduced the levy in 2022 as part of its strategy to improve domestic revenue mobilization. As a result, a percentage fee is applied to mobile money transfers, bank transfers, and other digital financial activities, such as sending money, making payments for goods and services, and transferring funds through services like MTN Mobile Money.

Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Lawyer Jantuah declared, “The e-levy is theft.” He stressed that many Ghanaians use mobile money (momo) as their primary bank account, questioning, “Why would the government dig its hands into my bank account?”

Lawyer Jantuah further argued that taxing these forms of transactions is unfair and burdensome to ordinary citizens.

The legal practitioner also pointed out the widespread frustration from the public, who have been pressuring the government to remove these taxes.

He concluded that the government should scrap the e-levy, asserting that it is detrimental to the everyday person. “When it comes to the e-levy, betting tax, and COVID tax, I think it was the haste and pressure from the electorate with regard to their wanting these taxes removed. The e-levy is theft. Why would you come and dig your hands into my bank account? Because people use Momo as their bank account. That, I agree, should go.”

‘Powerful’ personalities who have warned President Mahama against scrapping betting tax

0

GhanaWeb Feature by Benjamin Sackey

President John Dramani Mahama’s promise to scrap the betting tax has been met with vehement criticism from some influential politicians and economists in the country.

Some of these individuals suggest that gambling is a harmful act; hence, taxing it is right to discourage the youth from engaging in it to curtail the menace.

Others believe that maintaining the tax would help the government generate revenue to aid in fixing the ailing Ghanaian economy.

About betting tax

In August 2023, a law imposing a 10% withholding tax on any money won from sports betting became active in Ghana, drawing plenty of concerns from bettors in the country.

The 10% withholding tax on winnings was introduced, effectively replacing the previous 15% value-added tax on betting stakes. In addition to the tax on winnings, Ghana also compelled betting operators to remit a 20% withholding tax on the Gross Gaming Revenue.

What President Mahama said about the removal of betting tax

As part of his tour of the Bono East Region during the 2024 election campaign, then-candidate Mahama reaffirmed his party’s pledge to abolish the controversial betting tax if elected into office.

Speaking to supporters at Nkwabeng in the Nkoranza South Constituency, Mahama emphasized the need for financial discipline among the youth, urging them to make wise use of their winnings from betting.

“We will remove the betting tax. For those who engage in betting, when you win, the government will no longer take a tax from your winnings. If you win, spend your money wisely. Don’t waste it on unnecessary things; use it to improve your life in a meaningful way,” he said.

Personalities who have advised against abolishing the betting tax

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The former Member of Parliament for Suame constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, explained that the betting tax is intended to discourage the youth from focusing excessively on betting and to encourage them to engage in activities that will provide a sustainable income.

The former Majority Leader in Parliament questioned why Mahama, as a Christian, would promise to remove the betting tax, knowing that the Bible disapproves of such activities.

“As a Christian, I believe everyone should earn from their work. The Bible is against betting; that’s my understanding. The government imposed the betting tax to discourage people from focusing on betting, similar to taxes on alcoholic drinks and cigarettes to limit their usage.

“If you remove the tax from alcoholic beverages, you are encouraging people to drink more. Is it Mahama’s intention to turn the country into a betting hub by removing the tax? Betting is not a profession, so if you are a Christian and you intend to do this, it’s questionable,” the MP said in Twi on Angel FM.

Franklin Cudjoe

The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, stated that the betting tax should be revised instead of being scrapped for the government to earn revenue.

“Despite the economic challenges, I do not agree that we should completely remove taxes on the winning cash of betting. He can revise the tax downwards.”

“Some of the boys were complaining, and I understood them because they argue that ‘you are not creating jobs for me as a government, the little joy I get from betting, you tax the joy away.’ Of course, we don’t want that, but I think there has to be a middle ground.”

Cudjoe also criticized President Mahama for not addressing this issue in a more balanced way during the launch of the Youth Manifesto.

“John Mahama should have said, ‘Look, taxes must be implemented to generate revenue for the country; however, the rate will be revised.’ I would have agreed to that, but in terms of doing away with it, that is more political talk,” he stated.

Prof. Stephen Adei

Professor Stephen Adei, a former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), admonished President John Mahama not to scrap the betting tax.

While condemning betting and tagging it as evil, he urged the government to increase the tax from 10 to 50 percent and not scrap it.

“Sin taxes like the betting tax must be increased and not scrapped. I will urge them to take it to 50 percent because it is a disastrous habit that ought to be discouraged,”he noted.

Prof. Patrick Asuming

Renowned economist Professor Patrick Asuming entreated President Mahama to maintain the betting tax due to its moral impact.

The economist justified keeping the betting tax, stating it helps regulate behavior among youth involved in betting and discourages them.

“I think, in terms of specific proposals, they have proposed removing the E-levy, COVID levy, and betting tax. If you look at what we are projected to collect from those three in 2025, it will be just around 5% of the revenue.

“Given how much of a nuisance the E-levy has been, removing them wouldn’t be too much of an issue. However, I don’t think we should remove the betting tax. I know young people in this country won’t be happy to hear me say that,” he said while speaking in an interview with Citi FM.

Joe Jackson

Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, raised concerns about how the President Mahama administration will generate revenue for development if it removes all the taxes it has promised to abolish.

Jackson highlighted the significant challenges in managing the economy, particularly with the manifesto pledge to remove certain taxes, including the e-levy.

Speaking on TV3, Jackson said, “Let us not be mistaken, in 2025, we have to look at how we are performing in terms of revenue because some of the items are going to go out.

“There has been a manifesto commitment to take out the e-levy, betting tax, the COVID levy. So a lot of issues are going to come out, and I have no doubt in my mind that the challenge is going to be huge. You say you are going to remove tax A, B, C, D. But where is the money going to come from?”

Institute of Community Sustainability

The Institute of Community Sustainability urged President Mahama’s government to increase the betting tax to 50% to curb the alarming rise in betting activities among the youth.

In a statement signed by the Executive Director, Eric Jerry Aidoo, the Institute highlighted how individuals spend excessive amounts of money and time on betting platforms, with some staking nearly 50% of their winnings, only to lose it again.

“The current state of sports betting in Ghana is worrisome. Many young people are spending an inordinate amount of time and money on betting platforms, with some staking 50% of their winnings only to lose it all again. This vicious cycle of betting and losing is not only draining the financial resources of our youth but also eroding their productivity and potential.

“If left unchecked, this betting epidemic could have severe consequences for our society. Desperate individuals may resort to crime, such as robbery, to fund their betting habits. Companies may also suffer as employees squander their salaries on betting, leading to financial losses and decreased productivity.

“Increasing the betting tax to 50% would be a bold step towards addressing this issue. The revenue generated from this tax could be channeled towards establishing rehabilitation centers and providing support services for individuals struggling with betting addiction,” portions of the statement read.

Ato Forson’s stance on the issue:

Despite these calls, Minister-designate for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has guaranteed that abolishing the betting tax will be one of his first actions in office.

Ato Forson clarified that removing the betting tax will not have a dire impact on the Ghanaian economy, considering the revenue it generates for the government.

“That tax [betting] will not solve the problem because I have read several articles suggesting that it is destroying our youth. To introduce a tax, you must consider the elasticities and whether imposing such a tax will prevent individuals from engaging in betting, but it has not achieved that goal.

“I insist that this tax must be abolished. As Minister of Finance, I will abolish the betting tax in my first budget,” he said.

Dead bodies seen in videos from South African mine

A cage being lowered down from the top of the disused shaft to bring the miners back to the surface A cage being lowered down from the top of the disused shaft to bring the miners back to the surface

Disturbing videos have emerged showing the dire situation at a disused gold mine in South Africa where scores of illegal miners have reportedly been living underground for months.

They have been there since police operations targeting illicit mining started last year across the country.

In one of the videos, which the BBC has not independently verified, corpses wrapped in makeshift body bags can be seen. A second shows the emaciated figures of some miners who are still alive.

A long-delayed rescue operation, that last week a court ordered the government to facilitate, is continuing for a second day after beginning on Monday.

This story contains a video that some people may find distressing.

Last year, arguing that the miners had entered the shaft in Stilfontein deliberately without permission, the authorities took a hard line, blocking food and water supplies.

In November, one government minister said: “We are going to smoke them out.”

More than 100 of the illegal miners, known locally as “zama zamas”, have reportedly died underground since the crack down began at the mine some 145km (90 miles) south-west of Johannesburg.

The authorities however, have not confirmed this figure as it is yet to be “verified by an official source”, a spokesperson told the BBC.

Hundreds are thought to be still in the mine while more than 1,000 have surfaced in the past few months.

In one of the videos released by a trade union, the General Industries Workers of South Africa (Giwusa), dozens of shirtless men can be seen sitting on a dirty floor. Their faces have been blurred. A male voice off camera can be heard saying that the men are hungry and need help.

“We’re starting to show you the bodies of those who died underground,” he says.

“And this is not all of them… Do you see how people are struggling? Please we need help.”

In the other video, a man says: “This is hunger; people are dying because of hunger.” He then puts the death toll at 96 and begs for help, food and supplies.

The union says the footage was filmed on Saturday.

In a briefing held on Monday near the site of the rescue operation, Giwusa leadership, alongside community figures, said the videos shared “painted a very dire picture” of the situation underground.

“What has transpired here has to be called what it is; this is a Stilfontein massacre. Because what this footage does is show a pile of human bodies, of miners that died needlessly,” Giwusa president Mametlwe Sebei said.

He blamed the authorities for what he described as a “treacherous policy” that was deliberately pursued.

The department of mineral resources, leading the rescue effort, told the BBC that Monday’s operation included lowering down a cage that is then hoisted up once loaded with people.

This structure is designed to hold six or seven people, depending on their weight, according to Giwusa. It has been going down the shaft – descending about 2km – every hour. The union said that by the end of Monday 26 miners had been brought up alive, along with nine bodies.

Department of mineral resources spokesperson Makhosonke Buthelezi could not confirm whether the priority will be to retrieve those who had died or those in need of medical attention.

A briefing will be held by the department, together with the police ministry, on Tuesday to provide an update on the operation.

New Hairstyles for Ladies in 2025: Trends to Watch

0

As we move into 2025, hair fashion is embracing bold new trends while still celebrating timeless classics with a modern twist. Ladies seeking to update their look can find inspiration in a variety of fresh, exciting styles that reflect both individuality and elegance. Here are some of the top hair trends expected to dominate in 2025:

1. Modern Shag Cut

The shag haircut, a retro favorite, continues its revival in 2025, but with a more polished, contemporary approach. This style combines layers of varying lengths for texture and volume, allowing the hair to move freely. The modern shag is versatile and can be tailored for any hair type, whether straight or curly, and works well with or without bangs.

2. Pixie Cut with Volume

Short haircuts are making a comeback, and the pixie cut is leading the charge. However, this time around, volume and texture take precedence. The traditional pixie is being reimagined with tousled layers and a more voluminous finish, making it an ideal choice for those who want a chic yet low-maintenance style.

3. Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs are a timeless trend that continues to evolve. In 2025, expect to see them paired with soft waves or sleek straight hair. These bangs frame the face beautifully, offering a relaxed, natural look that adds elegance and sophistication to any hairstyle.

4. Blunt Bob with Color Accents

The blunt bob remains a favorite among fashion-forward women, but in 2025, it’s all about incorporating playful color accents. Whether it’s bold highlights, ombre effects, or pastel tones, adding color to the sharp edges of a blunt bob creates a striking contrast and modern flair.

5. Sleek and Shiny Long Hair

For those who prefer longer locks, the trend in 2025 is smooth, glossy hair with a healthy shine. Straight hair will continue to reign, with ultra-sleek styles achieved through advanced heat technology and nourishing products that enhance the hair’s natural luster.

6. Textured Waves

Loose, beachy waves continue to be a major trend in 2025. Textured waves add a relaxed, effortless vibe to any look, and they work well with various lengths, from shoulder-grazing to longer tresses. Adding layers to waves also increases volume and depth, creating a stunning, full-bodied effect.

As hairstyling evolves, 2025 encourages women to experiment with their looks, combining modern techniques with classic elements. Whether you prefer short and edgy or long and flowing, there’s a trend for every personality and occasion. It’s all about finding the style that best expresses who you are in this exciting new year.

Osibisa’s Teddy Osei passes away in London

0

Celebrated Ghanaian musician, Teddy Osei of Osibisa fame has died at 88.

The unfortunate event occurred on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 in London.

President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons confirmed the sad news to Citi News, describing Teddy Osei’s death as a loss of one of Ghana’s greatest musical icons.

Teddy Osei, who co-founded Osibisa in 1969 was renowned for blending Afrobeat, highlife and rock to create a globally recognised sound.

Born in December 1937 in Kumasi, his musical journey began in his youth when he was first introduced to musical instruments.

His  passion for music led him to pick up the saxophone during his college years in Sekondi, where he attempted to form a band with friends.

Interestingly, he took up the instrument when the original saxophonist failed to attend practices.

Teddy honed his skills by playing along to jazz records, a self-taught practice that shaped his artistry.

After completing college, Osei briefly worked as a building inspector before forming his first band, The Comets, which enjoyed moderate success.

In 1962, he traveled to London on a government grant to study music and drama. However, political changes in Ghana forced him to leave the program after three years.

Dr. Wengam revealed that his first connection with President Mahama dates back several years when Mahama and his family became members of the Ringway Gospel Center in Accra.

What a lean government means for Ghana

0

On 11th January, 2025, Ghana’s new president, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama announced a reduction in the number of government ministries from thirty (30) to twenty-three (23).

This major policy reform measure is consistent with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) campaign promise to downsize government by appointing no more than sixty (60) Ministers as a strategy to streamline government operations and reduce public spending.

The last New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo operated thirty (30) ministries with 129 ministers in 2017. However, this number was significantly reduced to eighty-five (85) ministers by 2024, mainly in response to the need for reforms under the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.

The unprecedented policy decision has elicited varied reactions from policy experts and the ordinary Ghanaian. These reactions reflect optimism for potential government efficiency, as well as scepticism about the real impact on public spending.

Some economic experts agree that the reduction in the number of ministers is an indication of the commitment of the new president to run government with 60 ministers.

This also demonstrates the president’s commitment to streamlining government, reducing inefficiency, and focusing on delivering better governance outcomes.

Downsizing government can potentially stabilize the economy and improve the country’s fiscal health in the short to medium term for Ghana, a country under IMF program. Several empirical studies indicate that a lean government contributes to lower deficits, better fiscal health, improved governance and stronger economic performance through efficient, accountable, and prudent spending (IMF 2010; OECD 2012 and World Bank 2000).

Under the current IMF program, Ghana is seeking to reduce its debt by $4.7 billion and $4.4 billion in cash flow relief.

For this end, a small government can inspire hope in the economy by signalling the country’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, efficiency, long-term stability, as well as positive signals to local and international creditors.

A 2014 Afrobarometer survey shows that Ghanaians may be willing to pay higher taxes to support development if they trust the government’s effective use of tax revenues and the delivery of quality public services (Afrobarometer 2014).

The reduction in the number ministries which will reflect in the comparatively lower number of government ministers will demonstrate government commitment to cutting public expenditure to enhance public trust and support for the system.

This measure will also reassure the public that resources are allocated more efficiently and that measures are being taken to avoid excessive debt and financial crises.

This commitment can foster a sense of trust, as citizens see their leaders prioritizing sustainable development and the well-being of future generations.

Furthermore, reducing public expenditure can lead to a more effective public services, lower taxes, and improved economic conditions, all of which directly benefit the citizens, and result in a more positive relationship between the government and its people.

However, it will take real leadership to reduce public expenditure in a lean government. According to Mr Kwesi Jonah, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Democratic Governance, the reduction in the number ministries which will ultimately lead to a reduced number of ministers is a very good idea.

He however, advises the President to remain committed to the actual policy intent of cutting expenditure. He noted that political patronage is a significant feature in many African countries, including Ghana where political appointments are used to reward party supporters through jobs and other benefits.

He, however, expressed optimism that Prez Mahama will avoid the situation where the number of potential appointees to the ministries that have been merged or scrapped will be ‘catered for in other areas in of government’ which will defeat the real intention to save public cost.

NPP lost the 2024 Election due to voter apathy, governance issues

0

2024 Running Mate of the NPP, Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh 2024 Running Mate of the NPP, Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh

The 2024 Running Mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has attributed the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections to governance-related issues, and voter apathy, while rejecting claims that economic mismanagement played a significant role.

Speaking on Channel One TV on January 13, 2025, Dr. Prempeh emphasised that voter apathy, rather than economic dissatisfaction, was the primary reason for the party’s defeat.

“Voter apathy. Voter apathy affected both parties but affected NPP even more. When you analyse it, my party has sent the team around as an academic team. They’ll come up with only one answer which is governance issues. This current government governance issues.

“See, when people in your party are fed up with the way you are governing, they decide not to go to flock to the opposition. But they don’t even want to turn up to vote. So, if you’ve cared to listen, everywhere you go, sometimes in some places, who were even at the police station who were saying they’re not going to vote. It has never happened,” he said.

Dr. Prempeh pointed out instances where voters, including party supporters, openly expressed their unwillingness to participate in the polls, describing this as unprecedented in Ghana’s political history.

“If you do the diagnosis of every country in the world, when people have lost elections based on economic management, they go in droves to vote for the other party or abstinence. No, I’ll tell you the reason for abstinence. Everywhere citizens move in droves to support the opposition.

“Number one reason is economic. In Ghana, I’ll give you an example. In the US, Donald Trump lost an election. Even when he won the first time, he lost the popular vote, he won the electoral college. This time around, when he won, he won hugely on the popular vote at the electoral college. And the number one reason the base, America will tell you, they saw grocery prices going through the roof,” he noted.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has released updated results for the 2024 presidential election, with President John Dramani Mahama securing 56.42% of the votes from data across 275 out of the 276 constituencies.

President Mahama garnered 6,591,790 votes, while his closest contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,877,611 votes, representing 41.75%.

Court of Appeal to rule on whether Anas should reveal his identity to Nyantakyi

Kwesi Nyantakyi and Anas Aremeyaw Anas Kwesi Nyantakyi and Anas Aremeyaw Anas

The Court of Appeal is set to determine whether investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas should reveal his identity to former President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, GhOne TV reports.

This development comes after Nyantakyi demanded that Anas disclose his true identity before testifying in court, citing credibility concerns.

The ruling will pave the way for the substantive case to be heard by the Accra High Court, which will then make a determination on the matter.

Kwesi Nyantakyi is facing charges of fraud and corruption due to his involvement in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’s “#Number 12 exposé.”

Abdulai Alhassan, the former Northern Regional GFA boss and second accused, is also facing an additional charge of conspiracy to commit fraud. Both have pleaded not guilty.

When the case was last called on June 10, 2024, Justice Marie-Louise Simmons stated that the High Court would wait for the Court of Appeal’s decision before proceeding with Nyantakyi’s trial.

She emphasized that continuing the trial while the matter is before the Court of Appeal would be inappropriate.

On July 10, 2024, when the parties were expected to update the court on the appeal, the court did not sit. Both Nyantakyi and Alhassan, along with their lawyers, were present. The case was adjourned to October 16, 2024.

Operation under way to rescue trapped miners from South African gold mine

0

South African Police Service officers walk near the rescue operation to retrieve illegal miners South African Police Service officers walk near the rescue operation to retrieve illegal miners

Rescuers have hoisted illegal miners and several bodies from an abandoned gold mine in South Africa, where reports emerge that hundreds may be trapped and at least 100 may have already died.

A professional mine rescue company sent a large cage into the mine shaft near Stilfontein, about 140km (90 miles) southwest of Johannesburg, on Monday.

“We can confirm to you that the machine is working. It has brought up seven people,” Mzukisi Jam, of the South African National Civics Organisation (SANCO), told reporters at the mine.

At least four bodies were also retrieved, according to community leader Johannes Qankase.

Sabelo Mnguni, a spokesman for the Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) group, said that a mobile phone sent to the surface with some rescued miners on Friday had two videos on it showing dozens of bodies underground wrapped in plastic.

Mnguni said “a minimum” of 100 men had died in the mine where police first launched an operation in November to force the miners out of the illegal operation. The miners are suspected to have starved to death or died of dehydration, Mnguni said.

Nine bodies were recovered in a community-led operation on Friday, he said. Another nine were recovered in an official rescue operation by authorities on Monday, when 26 survivors were also brought out, Mnguni said.

South African Police Service spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said they were still verifying information on how many bodies had been recovered and how many survivors were brought out after starting a new rescue operation.

Authorities now hope to bring all of the survivors out of the mine.

The mine has been the scene of a standoff between police and miners since authorities first attempted to get the men out and seal the mine two months ago.

Police said the miners were refusing to come out of the Buffelsfontein Gold Mine for fear of arrest, but MACUA’s Mnguni said they had been left trapped underground after police removed ropes and a pulley system the miners had used to climb into and out of the mine.

“The shaft is 2km (1.2 miles) deep. It’s impossible for people to climb up,” MACUA’s Magnificent Mndebele said.

South Africa’s Sunday Times newspaper reported that the company leading the rescue effort had designed a special cage that could be lowered up to 3km (1.8 miles) into the mine shaft and the rescue operation – if all goes to plan – would last 16 days.

MACUA won a court case in December that ordered police and provincial authorities to allow food, water and medicine to be sent down to the miners.

Illegal mining is common in parts of gold-rich South Africa, where companies close down mines that are no longer profitable, leaving groups of informal miners to illegally enter them to try and find leftover deposits.

Large groups of illegal miners often go underground for months to maximise profits, taking food, water, power generators and other equipment with them, but also relying on others on the surface to send down more supplies.

Police have said they are uncertain exactly how many illegal miners remain underground, but say it is likely to be hundreds.

South African authorities have long tried to crack down on illegal mining gangs, which are known as “zama zamas” – which means “hustlers” in the Zulu language – and have a reputation for being violent, often armed and part of criminal syndicates.

MACUA’s Mnguni said this particular group of trapped miners were not criminals but former mine employees who had been put out of work when mines closed, and were left desperate.

“The miners go back to the mine because they live in poverty,” he said.

ORAL Has No Legal Support – Kwaku Asare

0

In the recent vetting of the Attorney General designate, Mr. Kwaku Ansah-Asare, the former Director of the Ghana School of Law, has made it clear on the handling of inquiries, particularly concerning the legality of Operations Recover All Loots (ORAL).

Mr. Ansah-Asare expressed his disapproval of the Attorney General’s responses, suggesting that his response during the vetting on matters of O.R.A.L revealed a lack of decisiveness in addressing its legalities.

IMF Managing Director Praises Akufo-Addo’s Leadership

0

In a heartfelt letter to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), expressed her gratitude for his leadership during his time in office.

The IMF boss acknowledged the significant policies and reforms implemented during Akufo-Addo’s administration, which have laid the groundwork for Ghana’s future.

In the statement, Georgieva also commended Akufo-Addo’s advocacy for the Sub-Saharan Africa region during the COVID-19 pandemic.

His efforts helped mobilize the necessary resources to respond to the crisis, demonstrating his commitment to regional cooperation and development.

This is not the first time Georgieva has engaged with Ghana’s leadership.

In March 2024, she visited Accra for a three-day visit, where she met with President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other government officials.

The IMF Managing Director further praised the excellent collaboration between the Ghanaian government and the IMF.

The recent completion of the third review of the IMF-supported program and the progress made toward restoring macroeconomic stability over the past few years are a testament to this successful partnership.

Ghana’s commitment to economic reforms and stability has been evident, with the government working to sustain growth, control expenditure, and mobilize domestic revenue.

Georgieva’s letter is a significant endorsement of Akufo-Addo’s leadership and legacy.

However, as Ghana transitions to a new administration, the IMF’s continued support and partnership will be crucial in maintaining the country’s economic stability and promoting sustainable growth.

Market Fires: President Mahama commiserates with Kantamanto traders

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Jan 14, GNA – Following the fire outbreak that ravaged the Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama has commiserated with the traders, assuring them of government’s support to recover from their losses.

Interacting with the affected traders at the Accra International Conference Centre on Monday, the President expressed concern over their plight and directed his Chief of Staff to meet with them to find out the immediate assistance possible.

The Kantamanto Market is an important trading hub in Ghana, supplying goods and services to the greater parts of the country.

“And so when we heard the news, it came as quite a shock because the country was in the mood for the inauguration and everything was going well,” the President said.

“For something like this to happen, it really saddened all of us. The loss of capital, the loss of goods have been very heavy.”

President Mahama said due to the gravity of the fire, he asked Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to pay a visit to the site to sympathise with the traders, listen to their concerns, and chart the way forward.

“One of the first things we need to do is to prevent these fire outbreaks from happening. In some cases it might be due to wrong wiring or use of inferior materials,” he said.

“But in some cases, we can’t rule out what we call arson; that is people deliberately setting fire in order to cause distraction.”

“I remember it happened in 2013 when I was newly sworn in as President. There were market fires in almost every market, which was quite unusual.”

The President said in many cases the investigation showed that people deliberately set fire just to cause chaos and confusion.

He noted that he had also learnt of the Techiman Market fire and had directed the security heads to tighten security around the markets to curb the menace.

He tasked the Fire Service to station their tenders near big markets in the nights, so that in case of a fire outbreak they would be right there on the scene to douse it before it caused any damage.

“We’re also asking them to explore installing CCTV cameras at all vantage points of every market so that if anybody is involved in setting the fires, we’ll be able to see on the CCTV camera.”

The traders informed the President that the damage caused by the fire had brought untold hardships to them and appealed to the Government for support to enable them to get back on their feet.

Mr Jerry John Kwesi Motey, Chairman of Kantamanto 2 Market, told the President that certain people had threatened them with eviction; saying the land in question belonged to the Ghana Railway Authority.

He appealed to the President to intervene to ensure their livelihood and safety were secured.

Searching for solutions to strengthen Ghana’s horticulture industry

0

The horticulture sector plays a significant role in Ghana’s agriculture, contributing to food security, employment, and income generation. The sector is essential for both domestic consumption and export, providing opportunities for smallholder farmers and commercial enterprises alike. Despite the important role of the sector, it faces significant challenges, including post-harvest losses due to inadequate storage and transportation infrastructure, limited access to finance for smallholder farmers, and the impact of climate change, which affects crop yields and quality.

Farmer organizations (FOs) which could play a transformative role in Ghana’s horticulture value chain by acting as a collective force that enhances the efficiency, profitability, and sustainability of smallholder farming, remain underdeveloped.

A recent study commissioned by the agricultural team at the Netherlands embassy in Ghana assessed 23 Farmer Organizations across the tomato, onion, and pepper value chains in the country, with the objective of identifying systemic weaknesses and opportunities for transformation of Farmer Organizations.

SWOT analysis
From the study it was established that the level of farmer organizational development in the horticulture sector is very low, with even the existing farmer organizations being immature or very immature in organizations in terms of professionalism. Most farmer organizations were found not to have matured professionally, despite that some had been in existence or running for a while.

An analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats identified that, although farmer organizations have strengths they can build on such as Community integration, Local Knowledge and Practices, and the advantage of a Collective Bargaining Power, they are also hindered by the following identified limitations:

Weak Governance and Leadership: Issues such as poor leadership, lack of transparency, and weak governance structures can lead to inefficiencies and internal conflicts, hindering organizational effectiveness.

Lack of Unionized Organizations: existing FBOs are small, weak, and fragmented coupled with smallholder members who produce on a small scale, making the FOs uncompetitive and unattractive to bigger agribusinesses and buyers.

Lack of Business that serves members’ needs.

Limited Access to Finance: Many organizations struggle with securing adequate and affordable financing, limiting their ability to invest in essential inputs, infrastructure, and technology for improved production due to poor financial management.

Lack of Technical Skills: Many farmer organizations face a deficit in modern farming techniques, business management, and financial planning skills, which limits their productivity and long-term viability.

Post-Harvest Losses: High levels of post-harvest losses due to inadequate storage, poor handling, and transportation challenges significantly reduce the profitability and sustainability of these organizations.

Recommendations for growth
Highlighting recommendations based on some of the key challenges, the sector analysis from the study established that the challenges in the horticulture sector could be better addressed if the farmers in the sector, who are predominantly smallholders, join forces in farmer organizations to address challenges in the sector. The points below stood out as recommendations

Governance Improvement: Strengthen leadership structures and transition FOs to cooperative business models.

Capacity Building: Train farmers in modern agricultural practices, financial management, and leadership.

Market Access: Establish direct links between FOs and buyers, and promote value-added processing.

Finance Access: Develop partnerships with financial institutions to provide tailored credit and savings schemes.

Digital Solutions: Adopt platforms for market intelligence, financial transactions, and communication.

By empowering FOs through these strategies, Ghana’s horticulture value chains can become more efficient, sustainable, and profitable. This transformation will not only improve farmer livelihoods but also strengthen the nation’s agricultural sector overall.

Sammi Awuku Hands Over Resignation Letter To Mahama

0

In a move that marks the end of an era, Sammi Awuku has formally resigned as the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), effective January 13, 2025.

Sammi Awuku’s decision to step down comes as no surprise, given his recent election as the Member of Parliament for the Akwapim North constituency.

Sammi Awuku’s tenure as NLA Director-General was marked by significant milestones. He was appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in August 2021.
He received confirmation from the Public Services Commission in July 2022.

During his time at the helm of the NLA, Sammi Awuku worked tirelessly to promote the organization’s mandate and raise revenue for national development.

The NLA, established in 1958 as the Department of National Lotteries, has evolved into an autonomous public service institution with a legal monopoly over the organization of lotteries in Ghana.

The Authority has been a significant contributor to government revenue and a major employer over the past 50 years.

Sammi Awuku’s resignation letter, addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, was copied to several high-ranking officials, including the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and the Minister of Finance designate.

In the letter, Sammi Awuku cited his new responsibilities as a Member of Parliament and his desire to focus on serving his constituents.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a detailed directive to guide the selection and appointment of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country.

This follows a presidential directive dated January 2, 2025, aimed at ensuring transparency, fairness, and inclusivity in the vetting and selection process.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC has instructed all regional chairmen and secretaries to establish Regional Vetting Committees to oversee the process.

The committees will ensure that only competent, experienced, and constitutionally qualified individuals are considered for the crucial roles of MMDCEs.

Inclusive Vetting Committees

The directive mandates that the vetting committees include representatives from various stakeholder groups. Each committee will comprise the Regional Chairman, Secretary, and Organizer, as well as representatives from the council of elders, former appointees, the women’s wing, and the parliamentary caucus. Two constituency executives, who are not candidates for the MMDCE positions, will also serve on the committees.

Guidelines for Candidate Selection

The NDC outlined four key criteria for assessing applicants:

1. Proof of Membership: All applicants must provide verifiable proof of membership in the NDC. “All applicants must provide verifiable proof of membership in the party,” the statement noted.

2. Constitutional Eligibility: Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria stipulated in Article 94(3)(c) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

3. Diversity and Balance: The directive stresses the need for customary, geographical, and ethnic balance to ensure equitable distribution of political influence. “Due consideration must be given to the customary, geographical, and ethnic composition of each district to ensure a balanced distribution of political power and influence. This approach aims to foster unity and rally the entire district around a common developmental agenda,” the statement read.

4. Competence and Experience: The party emphasized that candidates must demonstrate the expertise needed to handle the complex responsibilities of an MMDCE. “The competence and relevant experience of each applicant should be critically assessed, as these attributes are essential for effectively managing the intricacies and complexities associated with the office of an MMDCE,” he stated.

Call for Cooperation

Kwetey urged all regional leaders to ensure strict adherence to the directive and emphasized the importance of transparency in the process.

“Please ensure that ALL members of the vetting committee are served with copies of this letter. Your full cooperation and strict adherence to this directive are highly anticipated and appreciated.”

‘Sarkodie can say whatever he likes against NDC’

Ghanaian socialite Showboy Ghanaian socialite Showboy

Ghanaian socialite Samuel Safo, popularly known as Showboy, has thrown his support behind rapper Sarkodie after a recent “Back to Gari Soakings” comment made by the rapper on social media.

In a video shared on social media, Showboy noted that the “No Sir” singer has the freedom to express himself.

He explained that Sarkodie has the right to criticise any political party if he is not satisfied with their work.

“Sarkodie is not the only NPP supporter, I am also an NPP guy, so if you want to confront someone, then come and confront all of us… So if he responded to Gari Soakings, so what? Isn’t he a rapper? You all should learn to think.

“If it’s attention you desire, learn how to get it. You can’t be threatening Sarkodie because if something happens to him, the law will take action, and if something happens to him, you will be arrested,” he said.

Showboy further urged people to stop criticising the rapper over a harmless statement.

“I have seen a video circulating on social media where someone is insulting and threatening the rapper. Brother, the laws in the country are in place, and you shouldn’t mess with him because if something happens to him, then you will realize how many people support him. The same NDC you are opposing will deny any involvement because the political party does not condone violence,” he added.

Background

Sarkodie has previously expressed his dissatisfaction with the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama.

From 2013 to 2016, the rapper used his music to voice his concerns, with one notable example being his 2014 track “Inflation,” which conveyed his displeasure with Mahama’s leadership.

However, Sarkodie noticeably remained quiet during the presidency of President Akufo-Addo, despite calls from his fans.

Statues of prominent Ghanaians which have been vandalised in 2025

0

L - R: Statues of former President Akufo-Addo, former President Prof Mills and COP Addo-Danquah L – R: Statues of former President Akufo-Addo, former President Prof Mills and COP Addo-Danquah

Tuesday, January 14, 2025, marks exactly one week since the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

One ‘unfortunate’ incident that has been recurring since the inauguration is the destruction of statues erected during the government of the immediate past president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Since Mahama’s takeover, at least three statues on public properties have been vandalised, and there has been no statement by authorities on it.

Ghana’s laws indicate the deliberate destruction of property, either private or public, is considered an act of vandalism and crime.

Even though this recent vandalism, which appears to enjoy public support, constitutes a crime per the laws of the country, there has been no indication that the perpetrators of these acts would be punished.

Here are three instances where statues erected during the Akufo-Addo government have been vandalised:

EOCO boss’s statue:

The first Akufo-Addo government-inspired statue to go down was that of the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah.

The statue was vandalised around 11:30 AM on January 7, 2025, when unidentified individuals entered the EOCO premises and destroyed the statue.

Despite the presence of two officers at the scene, they were reportedly unable to stop the vandals.

The statue, unveiled in October 2024, has been subjected to public controversies.

It was commissioned by EOCO staff to honour the then executive director, with the surrounding area named “Obatanpa Tiwaa Gardens” to honour her.

Prof Mills’ statue:

The next statue erected under the previous government that was touched was that of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills.

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, took to social media to express his frustration over the vandalization of a statue of the late former President Prof John Evans Atta Mills at the former president’s resting place, the Asomdwee Park.

Visuals from the Asomdwee Park show the plaque of the statue, which named Koku Anyidoho as the person who donated the statue, removed.

The writings on the plaque, before it was destroyed, showed details of the late former president and the inscription “Donated by Samuel Koku Anyidoho”.

Although the plaque of the statue could be seen broken into pieces, the sculpture of the late Prof Mills was intact and still standing.

It is not clear who removed the plaque, but the Asomdwee Park is state property, intended to be the resting place of the country’s presidents who pass on.

Statue of Akufo-Addo:

The third statue that has gone down is that of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo himself.

The former president’s statue at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi was completely destroyed by unknown individuals on Monday, January 13, 2025.

Before the destruction of the statue, several people had called for the relocation of the statue. Among them was Blay Nyameke Armah, the Member of Parliament for Sekondi in the Western Region of Ghana, who suggested that they seek permission from former President John Dramani Mahama to relocate Akufo-Addo’s statue to his hometown, Kyebi.

President Akufo-Addo faced significant criticisms after unveiling the statue on November 6, 2024.

A section of the public, including former President John Dramani Mahama, accused Akufo-Addo of self-glorification through the statue.

Mahama stated that it should not be the president’s decision to erect a statue of himself, but rather, people should do so after his tenure in recognition of his achievements.

Some residents of Sekondi expressed displeasure over the placement of the statue in their community, with some highlighting the poor condition of the very road where the statue was erected.

We will give Kantamanto, other markets nationwide a facelift – Mahama to traders

0

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama

In the wake of the devastating fire outbreaks which gutted Kantamanto and a couple of other markets nationwide, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to improve the state of markets nationwide.

During an engagement with the leadership of traders at the Kantamanto market, the president said the renovations were a product of a campaign promise to renovate markets across the country.

“In our [NDC] manifesto, we have the Market Enhancement Programme which is aimed at giving all markets a facelift so that people can be attracted to those places,” he told market leaders at a meeting in Accra.

The president said he had directed the Chief of Staff at the presidency, Julius Debrah, to continue interactions with the traders in order that both sides could arrive at how best the victims of the fire incident could be assisted by the government.

He noted that the meeting with the Chief of Staff was also part of the government’s immediate response to the tragedy, adding that it would assist the administration in coming up with immediate interventions even as the government remained cognizant of a long-term plan.

It will be recalled that on January 2, 2025, a fire gutted several shops and structures at Kantamanto causing significant damage.

Following the outbreak, many traders who own shops at the premises have disclosed losses worth several thousands of cedis.

So far, the market persons have received donations from some organizations and high-profile individuals including Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Leader of New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako.

Meanwhile, the Techiman Central Market was gutted by fire on Sunday, destroying several shops, leaving scores of traders in despair.

Agyemang-Badu demands answers before collecting share

0

Agyemang-Badu, former midfielder for the Black Stars Agyemang-Badu, former midfielder for the Black Stars

Former Black Stars midfielder Agyemang-Badu has revealed that he has taken a principled stance, refusing to collect his share of the U-20 World Cup team investment funds without a clear explanation of the investment’s growth.

This follows a letter from SAS Finance Group to the Ghana Football Association on Friday, January 10, 2025, inviting the 21 players who won the 2009 U-20 World Cup with the Black Satellites to collect their investment cheques. The letter stated that the 15-year investment made by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on behalf of the squad had matured.

However, in an interview with Angel TV, Agyemang-Badu disclosed that while some players have collected their investments, he has refrained from doing so as he awaits further clarification regarding the funds.

“There was a bit of controversy about it, and although I’ve not collected mine, I can confirm that about 11 players have received their monies,” he said.

“I’ve got a policy I live by, which is that if someone does something for me and I want to accept it, I need an explanation first. Therefore, I went to the bank to seek clarification and reported the matter to some of my elders for advice,” he added.

Badu further revealed that the captain of the 2009 squad, Dede Ayew, has also instructed his representative to refrain from collecting the funds until further questions are addressed.

“As of today, I can confirm that Dede Ayew has given the Power of Attorney to Fiifi Tackie to not collect his money and to hold off on mine as well so that we can seek answers,” he told Angel TV.

The Black Satellites made history by becoming the first African team to win the U-20 World Cup in 2009, defeating Brazil in Egypt. Following this victory, the government announced a $750,000 package for the players.

Sierra Leone declares emergency over mpox outbreak

0

A photo depicting mpox virus A photo depicting mpox virus

Sierra Leone has declared a public health emergency after two cases of mpox were reported.

The West African country’s health minister announced the move on Monday after the second case of the deadly viral disease was confirmed.

“The confirmation of two cases of mpox in the country has prompted immediate action as mandated by the Public Health Act,” Health Minister Austin Demby told reporters in the capital, Freetown. “On behalf of the government of Sierra Leone, I am declaring a public health emergency.”

Last week, Sierra Leone reported its first confirmed case of mpox since the African Union’s health watchdog declared a public health emergency over the growing mpox outbreak on the continent last year.

A second case was confirmed after a 21-year-old man showed symptoms on January 6, the National Public Health Agency said on social media.

Neither case had known recent contact with infected animals or other sick individuals, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation said.

Only the first case involved recent travel, limited to the airport town of Lungi in the northern Port Loko District between December 26 and January 6. Both patients are receiving treatment at a hospital in Freetown.

The public health emergency “allows us to act immediately to mobilise the resources needed to contain the disease, prevent further spread and provide care to those affected”, the minister said.

Demby also announced increased border surveillance and testing, as well as the launch of a national awareness campaign. He added that Sierra Leone’s medical system was ready to respond to cases, pointing to experience gained during the Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks.

“We urge all citizens to remain calm, stay informed and report any suspected cases promptly to healthcare authorities,” Demby said.

Mpox is caused by a virus from the same family as smallpox, manifesting in a high fever and skin lesions, called vesicles.

Also known as monkeypox, it was first identified by scientists in 1958 when outbreaks of a “pox-like” disease in monkeys occurred. Until recently, most human cases were seen in people in Central and West Africa who had close contact with infected animals.

In 2022, the virus was confirmed for the first time to spread via sex, as outbreaks were triggered in more than 70 countries across the world that had not reported mpox previously.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has borne the brunt of the epidemic, with a vast majority of the roughly 43,000 suspected cases and 1,000 deaths in Africa this year.

A decade ago, Sierra Leone was the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak that ravaged West Africa in an epidemic killing some 4,000 people, including nearly 7 percent of the country’s health workers, between 2014 and 2016.
