Member of Parliament for Ejura-Sekyedumase, Muhammad Bawah Braimah, has expressed confidence that President Mahama will improve Asanteman’s condition.
His statement comes during President Mahama’s visit to Kumasi on Saturday, January 18 where he is set to attend a church service at the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Center in Ahenema Kokoben on Sunday, 19th January, 2025.
President John Dramani Mahama’s use of his brother Ibrahim Mahama’s private jet for official trip to Senegal and The Gambia has been defended by his acting spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who assured the public that the arrangement comes at no cost to the Ghanaian taxpayer.
Explaining the decision during an interview with TV3 on Saturday, January 18, 2025, Mr Kwakye Ofosu revealed that the presidential aircraft is currently undergoing a review by the Communications Squadron, the Air Force unit responsible for its management.
Until the review is concluded, alternative travel arrangements are being made to ensure prudent use of state resources.
“The most critical point is that this alternative arrangement has not in any way, shape, or form cost the Ghanaian taxpayer a dime,” he stated.
“President Mahama is mindful of the precarious economic situation and is committed to utilising public funds prudently.”
He added that the jet, owned by businessman Ibrahim Mahama, was readily available for the trip and has been at the president’s disposal even before his election.
While some critics have questioned the decision to use a private jet for official duties, Mr Kwakye Ofosu dismissed their concerns, reiterating that the arrangement aligns with President Mahama’s commitment to efficient governance and responsible use of resources.
“The president is focused on ensuring the best outcomes for Ghana, especially during these economically challenging times,” he said.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu also assured the public that President Mahama would resume using the official presidential jet once the review is complete, reaffirming his dedication to transparency and accountability in managing state affairs.

Jan 18 (CNN/GNA) — Two veteran Iranian Supreme Court judges known for handling high-profile cases were shot dead inside the court in Tehran, state-affiliated media reported.
The Iranian judiciary said the assailant – who had no pending legal cases – killed Mohammad Moghiseh and Judge Ali Razini in a “planned assassination” and attempted to flee before taking his own life, Mizan News Agency reported.
A guard was injured in the attack, judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir said, according to the agency.
Moghiseh and Razini were veteran justices who for decades headed courts involved in trying protesters, artists and activists.
Moghiseh was sanctioned by the United States in 2019 for overseeing “countless unfair trails, during which charges went unsubstantiated and evidence was disregarded.” He was sanctioned by the European Union eight years prior.
In one case alone he sentenced eight Iranian Facebook users to a combined 127 years in prison for anti-regime publicity and insults to religion. He had also tried filmmakers and poets for “propaganda against the state,” the US Treasury Department said.
In another case in 2019, he sentenced prominent Iranian human rights lawyer and women’s rights defender Nasrin Sotoudeh to 33 years in prison and 148 lashes, according to Amnesty International.
In 1999, Razini survived an assassination attempt after a bomb was attached to his vehicle, Iran’s Fars news agency said. Along with former president Ebrahim Raisi, he is accused of being one of the judges involved in the “Death Commission” – an infamous committee that oversaw the prosecution and execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.
Artiste manager Bullgod (L), and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (R)
Artiste Manager Bullgod has asked former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to act like he is dead while enjoying his retirement.
In a discussion on UTV’s United Showbiz on January 18, 2025, Bullgod noted that he does not want the president to speak on anything concerning the country.
According to Bullgod, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, while president, gagged every individual in the country, so he must remain silent.
“Look where we are as a country, we don’t have time. Is John Dramani Mahama Akufo-Addo’s PR? Somebody like Akufo-Addo should never speak in Ghana again. He shouldn’t even cough. Some of us will make it our agenda.
“He will hear what we will tell him if he speaks. He should behave like he is dead and buried. I tell you that the inauguration we did was his funeral. He is dead,” he said.

Ghanaian pollster and political pundit, Professor Smart Sarpong, has advised the Minister for Roads and Highways-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, to manage his temperament as he prepares to assume his role.
In an interview with Accra-based Peace FM, Sarpong expressed his confidence in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Adaklu.
He highlighted Agbodza’s disciplined nature, noting that he was singled out among all MPs for his punctuality and behaviour.
“Out of all the MPs, he was singled out because of that. Even Speaker Mike Ocquaye, who is not from his party, acknowledged Agbodza’s discipline. For Speaker Ocquaye to testify to Agbodza’s punctuality and behaviour speaks volumes,” he remarked.
He further emphasised that Agbodza’s disciplined approach would likely influence contractors to improve their work standards.
However, Professor Sarpong also advised Agbodza to manage his temperament, noting that while he means well, his quick-tempered nature could pose challenges in handling issues effectively.
“The only thing I will tell him is to check his temperament. If you examine him, he is somewhat quick-tempered. There are people like that, they mean well but when it comes to handling issues, they tend to be like that.
“So now that he is managing people, he should learn how to manage his temperament,” he added.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced new ministerial nominees on January 16, 2025.
Haruna Iddrisu is set to lead the education ministry, while Governs Kwame Agbodza will head the roads and highways ministry, focusing on infrastructure development. Eric Opoku, nominated for the food and agriculture ministry, aims to boost food security and support farmers.
Opare Addo will lead the newly created Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment, prioritising youth-focused policies. Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare is nominated for the Ministry for Trade and Agribusiness, aiming to strengthen trade relations and promote agribusiness.
Ahmed Ibrahim and Emelia Arthur are nominated for the Ministries of Local Government and Fisheries and Aquaculture, respectively.

TikTok has gone offline in the US, hours before a new law banning the platform was due to come into effect.
A message on the app for US users said a law banning TikTok had been enacted, meaning “you can’t use TikTok for now”.
The video-sharing app was banned over concerns about its links to the Chinese government. It was given a deadline of 19 January to be sold to an approved US buyer.
President Joe Biden had said he would leave the issue to his successor, Donald Trump. Trump has said he will “most likely” give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a ban once he takes office on Monday.
“The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it’s appropriate,” Trump told NBC News on Saturday.
“If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.”
Users reported that the app had also been removed from Apple and Google’s US app stores, and TikTok.com was not showing videos.
“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office,” the message displayed after the ban went into force read.
Could TikTok ever be banned in the UK too?
The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the law, passed in April last year, banning the app in the US unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sold the platform by Sunday, which it has not done.
TikTok has argued that the law violates free speech protections for its 170 million users in the country.
After the ruling, TikTok’s chief executive, Shou Zi Chew, appealed to Trump, thanking him for his “commitment to work with us to find a solution.”
Mr Chew is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
In the hours before the social media platform went offline, content creators posted videos to say goodbye to their followers.
Creator Nicole Bloomgarden told the BBC that not being on TikTok would result in a significant salary cut.
Another user, Erika Thompson, said educational content on the platform would be the “biggest loss” for the community.
TikTok users were met with a message earlier on Saturday that said the law would “force us to make our services temporarily unavailable. We’re working to restore our service in the U.S. as soon as possible.”

According to the Lupus Foundation of America, lupus is “an autoimmune disease, which means that your immune system … attacks healthy tissue instead” of fighting infections.
While doctors are “very concerned” for her and the baby, Cori believes “God has his hands on [her] and says “[she] and the baby are doing perfectly fine.”

“I’m just excited to love on my baby girl and make her feel like she’s the prettiest in the world,” she gushed.
“Growing up, I wasn’t the most confident and never felt like I fit in, so just to instill all the beautiful things in her head at a young age. And I’m having a mini me.”
As for Deuce, Cori said he’s excited that their baby girl will hopefully look like her.
“He knows she is going to be so beautiful and he just can’t wait to build things for her and give her all the love in the world,” she told the outlet.
Broadus shared a pregnancy test via her Instagram Story on Monday.

The couple’s baby news comes after Cori suffered a “severe stroke” in January.

It’s unclear if Cori’s battle with lupus caused the health scare.

The notable television character approached the resistance Public Majority rule Congress (NDC) to send off an examination concerning this indicated abuse of assets. He asked their Oversight Obligation and Responsibility Association (ORAL) group to intercede and uncover reality with regards to the missing cash.

He called attention to that numerous authorities from the decision New Enthusiastic Party (NPP), including Agyapong, have neglected to be straightforward in their activities.

Collins Adomako-Mensah is the Afigya Kwabre North MP
The Afigya Kwabre North Member of Parliament, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has criticised the appointment of Dr. Kwaku Asiedu Nketia, son of the NDC’s National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, as the Acting Deputy CEO of the Minerals Income Investment Fund.
In response to the announcement of the appointments of Acting CEOs and Managing Directors for several state institutions, Adomako-Mensah expressed concerns about the potential nepotism within the ruling National Democratic Congress government.
According to him, Dr. Asiedu Nketia’s father, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is a board member of the Parliamentary Service Board, raising concerns about his father’s position within the cabinet.
He, however, sarcastically acknowledged Dr. Kwaku Asiedu Nketia’s appointment, stating that he was deserving of the position and even more qualified to take on such responsibility at the minerals institution.
“Congratulations to Dr. Kwaku Asiedu Nketia on your appointment as Deputy CEO of Minerals Income Investment Fund. A well-deserved post. You are more than qualified. Your father Asiedu Nketia is the Chairman of the ruling NDC and Board member of the Parliamentary Service Board. As Chairman your dad will also sit in cabinet. I sincerely believe that this is not family and friends. Don’t you love Ghana?” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) on January 18, 2025.
His sarcastic response to the appointment seems to reflect the NDC’s earlier criticism of the former Akufo-Addo-led government for running a ‘family and friends’ government, suggesting that they may now be perceived as engaging in similar practices.
His criticism follows President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of several NDC members to lead various state institutions, including Dr. Kwaku Asiedu Nketia, who is also the National Vice Chairman of the NDC Youth Working Committee.
Other notable appointments include Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, who has been appointed as the CEO of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company, and Wisdom Yayra Koku Deku, the Deputy Director of IT and Elections for the NDC, who has been appointed as the Acting CEO of the National Identification Authority (NIA).

Ghanaian photojournalist, Pious Ali with the defunct People and Places newspaper, known as P and P, has shared his remarkable journey in the United States of America (USA), detailing his rise in community leadership and politics since moving abroad in search of greener pastures.
In an exclusive interview with Classfmonline.com, Ali recounted how his work in community building, leadership, and education paved the way for his entry into U.S. politics.
According to him, he made history in 2013 when he was elected to the School Board of the City of Maine, making him the first Ghanaian to be elected to public office in the U.S.
He also became the first African Muslim to achieve such a milestone in the state.

Building on his political journey, Ali contested and won the position of Assistant Councilor in 2016.
His passion for leadership and public service later led him to run for Mayor in 2023, though he was unsuccessful in that bid.
Despite this, his vast institutional knowledge and leadership experience earned him a place as a City Councilor, and he was later appointed Standby Mayor.
Explaining his role, Ali stated that a Standby Mayor is responsible for taking over the duties of the Mayor in the event that the elected Mayor is unable to perform their responsibilities as required by law.
“Being a Standby Mayor means stepping in when needed to ensure continuity in leadership and governance,” he explained.
Ali’s story highlights the growing influence of Ghanaians in diaspora politics and serves as an inspiration for others seeking to make a difference in their communities abroad.

President Mahama used the Dzata private jet for his official travels
Security analyst Anthony Acquaye has criticised those attacking President John Dramani Mahama for traveling in his brother’s private jet instead of the official presidential jet.
In a release dated January 18, 2025, Acquaye explained that the decision made by President Mahama to use a privately owned jet was ‘driven by a commitment to ensuring his own safety and, by extension, the security and stability of Ghana’.
While acknowledging the critics’ concerns, the security analyst mentioned several factors that might have influenced the president’s decision to use his brother’s private jet.
He suggested that, since no official confirmation regarding the full operational readiness, security, and technical assessment had been provided by the relevant authorities, the use of the presidential jet could have potentially compromised the president’s security.
“… As against the reality that the military squadron in charge of the presidential jet has not provided an official confirmation of its full operational readiness, when in such circumstances, using the presidential jet would have introduced significant security and operational risks, potentially leading to disastrous consequences for both President Mahama and Ghana as a whole.
“It is crucial for critics to understand that in matters of national security, particularly on the safety of the first gentleman of the land, no risks should be entertained. Therefore, any decision involving the presidential jet, which is an extremely valuable national asset, requires rigorous security, intelligence, and technical assessment. This is a standard procedure to ensure the aircraft’s full readiness before any mission. Any absence of such clearance would make it reckless and irresponsible to fly in the presidential jet, as it would expose the president to potential threats,” he explained.
He also pointed out that no official communication has been provided regarding an updated airworthiness report, further justifying Mahama’s decision.
Acquaye added, “it is also important for critics to recognize that flying the presidential jet without an updated airworthiness report would violate established aviation safety protocols. Such a violation dramatically increases the risk of an in-flight emergency, whether due to mechanical failure or other unforeseen issues. This is a situation that no responsible government or leader would ever entertain, as the consequences could be far-reaching and catastrophic.”
He continued, “In light of these considerations, it is clear that President Mahama’s decision to use his brother’s private jet instead of the official presidential aircraft was driven by a commitment to ensuring his own safety and, by extension, the security and stability of Ghana. Any criticism of this decision that fails to take these critical factors into account is not only misplaced but also shows a lack of understanding of the complex security risks involved. The decision to use an alternative aircraft with a confirmed security clearance was a necessary and responsible step in safeguarding national interests and ensuring the President’s safety.”
Acquaye urged the president’s critics to prioritise his safety and that of the nation, emphasising that any disaster could impact the stability and governance of the country, and to set aside political considerations.

Renowned Ghanaian journalist, Okatakyie Afrifa, has issued a stern warning to fellow media personality Oheneba Boamah, urging him to stop his criticisms and focus on his own matters. The two journalists have been locked in a heated exchange after Boamah criticized Afrifa’s coverage of governance issues, particularly under former President John Mahama’s administration.
In a passionate address during a live session, Afrifa expressed frustration over what he described as unprovoked attacks and insults from Boamah. He made it clear that their approaches to journalism were different and demanded respect for their contrasting styles. “Stay in your lane,” Afrifa stated firmly, warning Boamah to desist from further criticism.
The tension began when Boamah accused Afrifa of being biased in his commentary, alleging that Afrifa was vocal in criticizing Mahama’s government but seemed reluctant to hold President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration accountable. Boamah’s comments sparked Afrifa’s fiery response.
“Don’t go in that lane with me, and this is your last warning,” Afrifa declared, adding a threat to expose Boamah’s personal secrets if the attacks continued. “If you go in this lane with me, I will disgrace you and reveal your secrets,” he warned.
Afrifa also took a jab at Boamah’s health, pointing out what he described as signs of poor health during Boamah’s radio appearances, including irregular breathing that he speculated could indicate high blood pressure. “This calls for medical attention. Be very careful, Oheneba Boamah,” Afrifa added, advising his colleague to focus on his well-being.

Private legal practitioner Moses Foh-Amoaning has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reinstate the Ministry of Information, citing its importance to the country.
According to Foh-Amoaning, scrapping the ministry could have negative consequences for Ghana.
The scrapping of some ministries was part of President Mahama’s campaign promise to reduce the number of ministries from 30 to 23 during the 2024 elections.
However, during an exclusive interview with Onua FM’s Nana Yaa Brefo, Foh-Amoaning expressed his disagreement with the decision to abolish the Ministry of Information saying: “One of the ministries they have ignored, which I have issues with, is the Information Ministry. I beg the president to bring it back. Why do I say so?
“Communication and technology are very technical. That includes ICT, digitalization, and all those aspects. So, communication and information are two different things now. If we ask the government to take care of the nation, we mean that they are managing the country.
“Any management scientist will tell you that marketing communication is an important tool of communication. The president has no option but to bring back the information ministry,” he said.

Withdraw Your Letter Terminating My Appointment; I’ve Been Out Since Nov. 2024 – Ken Attafuah To Mahama
Withdraw Your Letter Terminating My Appointment; I’ve Been Out Since Nov. 2024 – Ken Attafuah To Mahama
Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, the former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), has called on President John Dramani Mahama to withdraw a letter terminating his appointment.
The youth are like Wi-Fi—if you don’t invest in a strong connection, you’ll end up with a weak signal and a lot of frustration. In Ghana, we’re sitting on a goldmine of untapped potential, with young people full of ideas, energy, and the occasional questionable TikTok challenge.
Creating a Ministry for Youth and Empowerment is like finally upgrading to fiber broadband—it’s about time we give our youth the tools and support they need to power the nation forward. After all, these are the dreamers, the doers, and the future CEOs who might just invent the next jollof-delivery drone.
That’s why the appointment of George Opare Addo as Minister for Youth and Empowerment matters. It’s a decision that speaks volumes about how we see our young people and how seriously we take their concerns. But here’s the thing: with great opportunity comes great responsibility. And this moment demands that George Opare Addo rise above the noise of partisanship and serve all the youth of Ghana.
George Opare Addo: A Great Choice for Youth Minister?
For my colleagues and I in the NPP, the initial reaction to George Opare Addo’s appointment as Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment was surprisingly calm and accepting. Much of this can be attributed to his personality. Opare Addo comes across as a fair-minded, reasonable, and approachable individual—a perception echoed by a wide cross-section of young people on my social media feed. While my original concerns about the appointment remain, they are tempered by the recognition of his qualities as a leader.
My primary reservation lies in his age. Being in his late 30s or early 40s, George Opare Addo is approximately 20 years older than the average university student. He does not fall within the United Nations definition of youth (15 to 25 years) nor Ghana’s broader definition (15 to 35 years). For a Ministry of Youth, I had hoped for leadership that is of the youth, by the youth, and for the youth—a leader who could genuinely represent the demographic’s lived experiences.
However, I cannot fault Opare Addo’s personality or track record. Despite not being a member of his party, I find him likable. His tenure as the NDC’s National Youth Organizer was remarkable, demonstrating his ability to mobilize and engage young people effectively.
For decades, Ghana’s young people have felt overlooked, their voices drowned out in the din of political rhetoric and empty promises. Ministries intended to serve them have often been co-opted by other priorities and politics, focusing more on other interests than on solving real problems.
George Opare Addo’s appointment brings both promise and peril. As the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, he has a deep understanding of youth mobilization and the power of collective action. But that same political background raises a critical question: Can he lead a ministry that serves all of Ghana’s youth, or will the ministry become, in practice, an extension of the NDC’s youth wing? Imagine the danger if this becomes a trend in our politics—where the youth ministry becomes the playground of the incumbent party’s youth wing.
With careful oversight, a commitment to inclusivity, and a focus on national rather than party interests, George Opare Addo has the potential to rise above partisan politics and lead a transformative Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment. If anyone older than the youth demographic can do the job well, George Opare Addo is certainly among the best choices.
Let’s be clear—this isn’t just about political affiliations. It’s about trust. It’s about whether young people from every corner of Ghana, regardless of their background, feel like this ministry represents them, too.
The Danger of Partisanship
History teaches us that when public institutions become overly partisan, they lose their ability to serve the people. The Ministry for Youth and Empowerment must not fall into that trap. It cannot be a space where resources are distributed based on political loyalty. It cannot exclude voices that challenge the status quo. It must not prioritize party politics over national service.
When youth programs are tied to party agendas, we all lose. Talent is stifled. Innovation is overlooked. And the brightest ideas never see the light of day because they come from someone on the “other side.”
If this ministry becomes a tool of partisanship, it won’t just fail to serve the youth—it will deepen the cynicism that so many young Ghanaians feel about politics and governance. The risk is particularly high given Opare Addo’s role as Youth Organizer of the NDC. Naturally, there will be pressures to satisfy loyalists. But that is precisely the danger he must guard against.
Putting Ghana’s Youth First
The youth of Ghana don’t see themselves as members of one party or another. They see themselves as Ghanaians—united by their struggles, their hopes, and their dreams. They belong to a new generation—thoughtful, politically independent, and focused on the issues that shape their lives.
We saw this shift play out in the recent elections, where the NDC moved from struggling in many tertiary institutions to sweeping victories over the NPP. And they did this despite big-ticket policies like Free SHS and the restoration of nursing trainee allowances.
What this tells us is that the young people of Ghana are not just looking for promises or party loyalty. They are looking for real solutions, for leaders who will listen, and for policies that meet them where they are. They care about what works—and they will vote for what moves them forward.
George Opare Addo’s test is simple, but it’s not easy. He must prove that this ministry isn’t about party lines—it is about progress for the youth. He must rise above the partisanship that too often defines our politics and focus on what matters most: the aspirations of young people across this country.
The author, Kelvin Gyimah
Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about NDC or NPP. It’s about Ghana. It’s about who we are and who we want to be. And if we can get this right—if we can build a ministry that truly empowers our youth—then the ripple effects will be felt for generations.
So let’s support him while holding him accountable. Let’s expect more. And let’s remind ourselves that the future we want for our youth isn’t just a political promise—it’s a responsibility we all share.

Ghana’s President John Mahama’s choice of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the special guest of honour at Ghana’s recent presidential inauguration ceremony in Accra on January 7 should be leveraged as a strategic opportunity by both leaders to turn a new positive page in Nigeria-Ghana relations that should foreshadow the deliberate downplay of historic mutual prejudice and parochial negative rivalries.
Ghanaian-born veteran pan-African journalist, Ben Asante, made the call in Accra in a heartfelt congratulatory message to President Mahama on his recent inauguration as the President of Ghana. In his message, Asante praised Mahama’s leadership and the progress Ghana continues to make under his stewardship, while also emphasising the importance of strengthening ties between Ghana and Nigeria for the mutual benefit of both nations.
Asante, who has spent decades championing Pan-African unity and cooperation, including work as consultant to different tiers of governments in Nigeria, highlighted the significant diplomatic gesture of Mahama’s choice to invite Nigeria’s President Tinubu as the special guest of honor at the inauguration. According to Asante, this decision marks a momentous step in fostering stronger Ghana-Nigeria relations, signaling a shift towards more strategic and positive collaboration between the two countries.
“It is no coincidence that President Mahama chose President Tinubu to stand by his side on this historic occasion. This gesture underscores the importance of deepening bilateral ties between Ghana and Nigeria, two of Africa’s most influential nations. I commend both leaders for their commitment to enhancing the diplomatic and economic relationship that has long been a cornerstone of the West African subregion,” Asante said.
Asante’s call for a new chapter in Ghana-Nigeria relations resonates strongly in the context of current African geopolitics, where the need for continental unity and collaboration is more urgent than ever. Both Ghana and Nigeria have immense potential to lead Africa into a new era of growth and self-reliance, and Asante’s appeal serves as a timely reminder of the power of cooperation in overcoming challenges and shaping a better future for all Africans.
The Ghanaian journalist further noted that the relationship between the two nations, while historically rich, has often been marred by periods of rivalry and mutual suspicion. He urged both governments to use this moment as an opportunity to shed the long-standing prejudices that have occasionally fueled tensions and instead embrace a new era of cooperation and shared purpose.
“It is time to move beyond unnecessary rivalries and start a deliberate and intentional shift in how we engage with each other as two great nations on the African continent. The future of both Ghana and Nigeria hinges on mutual understanding, collaboration, and the strength of our shared Pan-African ideals,” Asante stated.
He urged both governments to harness the potential of their peoples, drawing attention to sectors where Ghana and Nigeria can collaborate more effectively for the benefit of both countries and Africa as a whole. These sectors include science and technology, healthcare, aviation, transport infrastructure, media, and human development.
Asante particularly emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation in areas such as scientific research and technological innovation, noting that both countries are home to vibrant academic and professional communities that can work together to drive progress. He also called for joint ventures to address challenges in healthcare, particularly in the areas of disease prevention, treatment, and medical research.
The veteran journalist also called for a united front in modernizing the aviation and transport sectors, where both nations can play key roles in shaping a more interconnected West African region.
“By working together in these crucial sectors, Ghana and Nigeria have the potential to become global leaders in innovation and sustainable development,” Asante noted.
Emphasizing the importance of people-to-people relations, he encouraged both nations to invest in cultural exchanges, educational collaborations, and media partnerships to foster understanding and tolerance among the peoples of both countries. This, he said, would serve as a foundation for overcoming historical grievances and building a future of peace and prosperity for generations to come.
Asante, for several decades, originally based in the United Kingdom, was at different times political editor of some of the leading influential pan-African publications based in London, including Africa Now and New African magazines. He also wrote for West Africa magazine out of London. Regarded as a veteran and versatile journalist around media and political circles in Africa and Europe, he travelled around most African countries covering events and conferences. He is considered knowledgeable on Nigerian politics, having spent years in the country as well as working on ECOWAS issues, including the civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Asante is regarded in ECOWAS circles as one of two journalists whose writings shaped the bloc’s views on the civil wars, especially on Liberia.
President Mahama’s inauguration, he stressed, should not just be seen as a political event, but as a pivotal moment to reset and reshape Ghana-Nigeria relations for the betterment of their citizens and the broader African continent.
“Together, Ghana and Nigeria can be a beacon of Pan-African unity, peace, and progress,” he stated.

According to the report by GHOne TV today, a man named Kwame Owusu returned home to his village in the Ashanti Region of Ghana after spending 15 years working in Dubai.
However, his homecoming took a devastating twist. Instead of the warm welcome he anticipated, Kwame arrived to an unimaginable betrayal.
The 42-year-old had sent money back home for years, hoping to build a better future for his wife, Nana Ama, and their two children.
During his long absence, he believed that everything was fine at home. But upon his arrival, he discovered that his younger brother, Kwaku Owusu, had been living with his wife, Nana Ama, and had fathered four children with her in his absence.
“I thought I was coming back to a happy family. I’ve worked hard in Dubai, sending money home to ensure my wife and children had a good life. But when I returned, I was hit with the harsh truth,” Kwame said with a voice full of pain.
According to Kwame, his brother Kwaku, who had been visiting the family regularly during his time abroad, took advantage of his absence.
“At first, I didn’t believe it when I heard the rumors, but when I confronted Nana Ama, she confirmed everything. It was heartbreaking,” Kwame added.
Kwaku, who had been a trusted member of the family, expressed regret but defended his actions, saying he was “helping” Nana Ama and the children when Kwame wasn’t there.
“I never wanted to hurt anyone. I was trying to provide support to her when Kwame was not around,” Kwaku explained, though he admitted he had gone too far.
Nana Ama, on the other hand, felt guilty for her betrayal but claimed that she had grown lonely during her husband’s absence.
“I didn’t plan for any of this to happen, but loneliness led me down a path I deeply regret,” she said, tears streaming down her face.
The community in the small Ashanti village was shocked by the family’s actions, and many residents are wondering how Kwame will move forward.
Some have advised him to forgive his brother and wife for the sake of his children, while others believe the betrayal is unforgivable.
“I don’t know how I can ever trust them again. But the children are innocent,” Kwame reflected, unsure of his next steps.
Ace broadcast Journalist Bridget Otoo has reacted to allegations levelled against President John Mahama for using a private jet of his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, to The Gambia.
According to the Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s trip with the Dzata private jet comes at no cost to the Ghanaian taxpayer.
A careful analysis of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto with a simple and patriotic lens, objectively is enough to make one understand that the concept of the “Black Star Experience” as an overarching theme to drive the John Dramani Mahama’s second tenure— for the Culture, Art and Tourism sector is not simply a chain of events lined up for the year.
The concept of “Black star” (credited to Marcus Garvey) is a symbol of Pan-Africanism and anti-colonialism: charged with the spirit of an overcomer, freedom, justice and future hope for all black generation.
Adopted by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (founder of Ghana) it became a metaphor of our sovereignty/independence and thus the name of Ghana’s Independence Tower “The Black Star Square” and, also, used (in 1957) by Theodosia Okoh in the design of the Flag of Ghana.
The world all over, the term “Black Star” in contemporary times, is now associated with Ghana thanks to our gallant senior national football team and the fact that Ghana remains the first country south the Sahara to glow the flame of independence, the “Gateway to Africa”: the first African country down the Sahara to ‘reset’ to herself towards development.
The “Black Star Experience” therefore, in the spirit of NDC’s manifesto basically enjoins us to ‘reset’ as a people culturally towards marketing the Ghanaian identity/culture through our indigenous and contemporary arts and thus, our tourism with a ‘reset’ mind—towards creating job opportunities, growing the creative economy and ‘journeying ourselves to ourselves’—for the purpose of development.
The idea basically is to ensure that ‘we live ourselves’ as Ghanaians from January to January—without a break.
-How?-
Through what is termed “Tourism 360”: that shall dedicate each month of the year to celebrating an aspect of the Ghanaian culture. So, in simple terms, we shan’t be limited to just “Ghana Month” in the month of March and that’s all—there shall be a whole month dedicated to celebrating the varieties of Ghanaian foods (culinary), another for Ghanaian Literature/other art, another for Ghanaian language, another for Ghanaian medicine etc. To mean, there will be always something about Ghanaian culture to celebrate throughout the year—Tourism 360.
In this light, tourists (local and/or international) have the opportunity to experience Ghana at anytime of the year. And constantly we shall be reminded of the beauty of our culture and empowered to live it.
One must not be worried about how this can be possible vis-a-vis our ailing economy: the “Black Star Experience” will not be a year-long government funded series of events; but a created and endorsed project led by the government, like international organizations as UNESCO, UNFPA etc have some important days like World Teachers Day, World Poetry Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, International Mother Language Day commemorated.
Like we all—individuals and corporate bodies—personally create events, workshops, seminars to mention but a few—to celebrate Ghana Month, the World Poetry Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Farmers Day, the Year of Return etc the Government led by agencies in charge of and promotion and preservation of respective areas of our culture shall create enabling environment for the commemoration.
So instead of asking why and how can it be done? Practitioners must make efforts to take advantage of this laudable initiative to experience Ghana and also create economic fortunes.

Mrs Mills, who was received by the First Family in their home in Accra, visited them to congratulate President Mahama on his victory in the December 2024 election.
It would be recalled that during the tenure Mrs Mills’ husband, President Professor John Evans Atta Mills from January 7, 2009, to July 24, 2012, President John Dramani Mahama was then the Vice President.
Following the passing of President Mills on July 24, 2012, then Vice President John Dramani Mahama was constitutionally sworn-in as Ghana’s President.
He then went on to win the December 7, 2012 Presidential Election and was inaugurated for his first four-year term of office on January 7, 2013.
President Mahama served his first term from January 7, 2013 to January 7, 2017. Losing the December 7, 2016 general election to the Candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President Mahama handed over power on January 7, 2017.
After eight years in opposition, President Mahama won a decisive victory in the December 7 2024 general election and was inaugurated into office for a second term on January 7, 2025.
Mrs Mills after leaving office as First Lady following the demise of her husband, has maintained a low public profile and avoided state functions.
Her Saturday’s engagement with the Mahamas is one of her rare public engagements over the past 12 years.
Outspoken US based Ghanaian journalist and founder of Loud Silence Multimedia Kevin Taylor has called on AGLOW International leader, Gifty Afeanyi Dadzie, to focus on praying for her daughter instead of using her energy on Ghana.
In a social media post, Kevin Taylor criticised the prominent and highly religious Christian leader, claiming she should prioritise “exorcising” her daughter from posting bikini photos on social media before leading intercessory prayers for Ghana.
“Gifty Afeanyi Dadzie needs to first pray for her bikini-wearing daughter to exorcise her from wearing dross and showing it on Social Media” Kevin Taylor wrote, adding that it is hypocritical to prioritise national prayers when her family matters have not been solved.
Kevin Taylor’s remarks, which many have described as harsh and personal, were part of his broader criticism of AGLOW’s use of government-managed venues like the independence square and Jubilee Grounds for their events. He suggested that such venues should no longer be made available to Gifty Afeanyi Dadzie and her group, that they should consider private church auditoriums for their programmes.
“When the NDC fully appoints all appointees, the government must make sure they do not give out any public space being managed by the government or a state agency to AGLOW for any of their event.
They can go look for any of the private church auditoriums to hold their Political prayers if they wish to but not government held grounds.” Kevin Taylor wrote.
AGLOW international, known for organising intercessory prayers for the nation has come into criticism from some NDC members, who believe their leader, Gifty Afeanyi Dadzie went into hiding for the past eight years when NDC were in opposition, but resurfaced immediately John Dramani Mahama won the elections.
A member of the Communications Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Shamima Muslim has accused the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of deliberately overshadowing the chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, in the ongoing vetting process.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 18, she criticised Afenyo-Markin for taking an overly dominant role in proceedings and shaping the tone of the process to suit his agenda.
“It is too early to say that the chairman has been weak or has allowed Afenyo-Markin to act like a co-chair, but observations show that Afenyo-Markin has been very deliberate and intentional in overshadowing the chairman,” she stated.
Shamima noted that the Chairman of the committee faced criticism, even from within his party, for giving Afenyo-Markin too much freedom during the vetting.
According to her, this approach risks disrupting the process. “You can see a marked difference in how the NDC facilitates a freer discourse compared to the NPP when they are in power,” she said
Citing past examples, she compared Afenyo-Markin’s conduct to that of Joe Osei-Owusu (Joe Wise), who chaired the Appointments Committee during the NPP’s administration. She claimed Joe Wise adopted a dismissive and authoritarian tone, especially towards younger members like Alhassan Suhuyini, creating an atmosphere of palpable disdain.
Madam Muslim further criticised the NPP for failing to implement the reforms they often advocate while in opposition.
“It seems the NPP and their agents preach reforms when in opposition, but abandon these ideals when they gain power,” she added.

Mr. Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, has sent a message to the general public about a letter circulating on social media that claims he has been appointed by President John Mahama to lead the creation of a 24-hour economy initiative. Alan Kyerematen made it clear that such letter is fake.
According to a statement signed by Kwame Owusu Danso, Special Advisor on Communications to Alan Kyerematen, the letter is fake and intended to mislead the public. The statement, released on Friday, January 17, described the document as a fabrication meant to cause confusion.
The alleged letter claims that Mr. Kyerematen has been named Acting Director for the establishment of a 24-hour economy board and secretariat. It further states that the appointment reflects President Mahama’s commitment to inclusive governance, as outlined in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto.
Mr. Kyerematen’s office, however, has dismissed the letter entirely, calling it false and urging Ghanaians to ignore it.
“This blatant attempt to create confusion and misinformation will not be tolerated,” the statement said. “Please treat this fake appointment letter with the contempt it deserves.”
The statement also advised citizens to verify information from credible sources to avoid falling victim to false news.
Earlier, Mr. Kyerematen had met with President Mahama after his re-election and presented his Great Transformational Agenda document to him. However, his office emphasized that this meeting had no connection to the fake letter in circulation.
Citizens are encouraged to remain alert and avoid spreading unverified information. It is expected that John Mahama will announce his last set of ministers on Monday, 20th January, 2025.
The enstoolments of Nkosua Hemaa Ama Bemponmaa, and Tufohene Kofi Opong Kofoh
A couple who traced their heritages to Ghana but reside in Canada, has been installed as Nkosuo Hemaa and Tufohene of Asamang Tamfoe, near Anyinam, in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.
Janice John-Mitchel, as the new Nkosuo Hemaa, with the stool name Ama Bemponmaa, will be responsible for the development of the area, together with her husband, Ryan Mitchel, who, as Tufohene, with the stool name, Kofi Opong Kofoh, will serve as advisor to the chief and his elders, and also has the responsibility of settling disputes among the people.
In a brief profile about Janice during her enstoolment on December 15, 2024, conducted by Osaberima Kwame Kuoh II, the Chief of Asamang Tamfoe, she was described as someone with an unwavering commitment to fulfilling the wishes of her forebears.
“Janice’s journey towards this esteemed position began with a deep-seated desire to reconnect with her roots and learn the language of her ancestors. This aspiration led to a fruitful relationship with a tutor dedicated to Janice and her family’s heritage. Her unwavering commitment to fulfilling the wishes of her forebears, particularly the yearning to return to the motherland, ultimately culminated in her enstoolment as Nkosuo Hemaa,” a statement said.
The significant, joint event, which Janice shared with her husband, Ryan, on the same day, has also been described as a distinctive arrangement, although it is not without precedent.
“Both Janice and Ryan possess Ghanaian heritage, although Ryan hails from Trinidad and Tobago, and the couple currently resides in Canada,” the statement added.
In attendance at the event were community members, even as Osaberima Kwame Kuoh II, the Chief of Asamang Tamfoe, led the couple through the ceremony.
The couple were accompanied by their three children and friends.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of Black people, particularly those in the African diaspora, tracing their heritage or ancestry to Ghana. This interest has been fueled by several key factors, including the “Year of Return” in 2019, during which Ghana made a significant push to connect with the African diaspora, marking 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were brought to the United States; ancestry testing, due to the rise of DNA testing services like Ancestry.com, 23andMe, and African Ancestry, which has allowed more Black people, particularly in the U.S. and the Caribbean, to use genetic tests to trace their African heritage; and cultural and historical reconnection, through which Ghana has positioned itself as a cultural and historical hub for Africans in the diaspora.
Other factors have been the African renaissance and pan-Africanism, and return migration, even as more people trace their ancestry to Ghana, with some choosing to return permanently or semi-permanently, contributing to a phenomenon of “return migration.”
Overall, the trend of tracing heritage to Ghana is part of a larger movement of reclaiming African identities and strengthening the connection between the African continent and the diaspora.
Through these efforts, people are reconnecting with the shared history, culture, and heritage of the African continent, while also finding opportunities for community-building and self-discovery.

The founder and leader of Alabaster International Ministry, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has issued a strong warning to President-elect John Dramani Mahama regarding individuals who may harm his administration if appointed to key positions.
Speaking during a service, Prophet Oduro noted that many individuals are lobbying for appointments in Mahama’s incoming government under the NDC. He referenced a recent statement by Mahama, who revealed that after his defeat in the 2016 elections, many people distanced themselves from him, only to return now with gifts following his 2024 victory.
Prophet Oduro described such behavior as hypocritical and driven by greed. He cautioned Mahama against appointing individuals with selfish motives, warning that they could undermine his government. According to the prophet, these individuals are more interested in personal enrichment than in serving the nation, a pattern he noted has plagued past administrations with dire consequences.
He emphasized the need for Ghana to have leaders who genuinely prioritize the nation’s interests and are committed to public service. Additionally, he called for God-fearing leadership focused on national development rather than personal gain.
Prophet Oduro’s remarks come in the wake of Mahama’s decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election, where he secured 56.55% of the vote, defeating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 41.66%. This victory marks Mahama’s return to the presidency, having previously served as Ghana’s leader from 2012 to 2017.
Mahama’s win has been celebrated nationwide, with many looking forward to his leadership in tackling critical national issues and fostering development.
The boubou is one of the most iconic and cherished garments in African fashion, known for its graceful flow and rich cultural significance. Over the years, this timeless garment has evolved, incorporating modern twists while maintaining its elegance and sophistication. Today, the latest boubou styles offer African women a perfect blend of tradition and contemporary flair, allowing them to exude sophistication and poise at various events.
1. Modernized A-line Boubou
The A-line boubou is a popular style that has been updated with sleek, tailored lines. It features a fitted upper part that gradually flares out into a voluminous lower hem, creating a flattering silhouette. Modern touches such as asymmetric hems, high slits, or draped shoulders add a contemporary edge, making it ideal for formal gatherings, weddings, or even cultural celebrations. The use of luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, and brocade elevates the style, making it a perfect choice for sophisticated African women.
2. Peplum Boubou
Peplum details have been incorporated into the boubou to create a look that is both chic and fashion-forward. The peplum, typically a ruffled or flared section at the waist or hips, adds a feminine touch, accentuating the waistline and offering a sense of structure to the flowing garment. This style is perfect for both formal events and social gatherings, offering a graceful, well-defined appearance.
3. Off-shoulder Boubou
For a bold, yet elegant look, the off-shoulder boubou is gaining popularity. This style reveals the shoulders and collarbones, exuding a sense of sensuality and confidence while retaining the boubou’s traditional charm. The off-shoulder design works beautifully with vibrant prints or rich solid colors, and when paired with statement accessories, it creates a regal look for high-profile occasions like galas or weddings.
4. Boubou with Intricate Embroidery
Embroidery is a key element in many boubou designs, adding an extra layer of artistry to the garment. Intricate threadwork, sequins, or bead embellishments along the neckline, sleeves, and hem can transform a simple boubou into a dazzling piece. These embellished boubous are often chosen for festive events, cultural ceremonies, and evening affairs where African ladies want to showcase both sophistication and cultural pride.
5. Asymmetrical Boubou
The asymmetrical boubou brings a modern twist to the classic style. With one side longer than the other or unique angular cuts, this version creates an effortlessly stylish look while maintaining the boubou’s essence. This edgy yet refined design is perfect for contemporary African women who want to merge tradition with avant-garde fashion trends.
6. Boubou with Belted Waist
Another fashionable update to the traditional boubou is the inclusion of a belt at the waist. A slim or wide belt can add structure and definition to the boubou, emphasizing the wearer’s curves while still allowing the garment’s flowy nature to shine. This style is particularly popular for semi-formal occasions, adding both comfort and sophistication.
7. Cape-Style Boubou
Cape-style boubous are a bold choice for African women seeking a regal and dramatic effect. The cape, often attached to the back or shoulders, drapes elegantly and creates an air of grandeur. These boubous are perfect for high-end events like state functions, formal weddings, or galas where the wearer wants to make a powerful yet graceful statement.
In conclusion, the latest boubou styles for African ladies combine tradition with contemporary elegance, offering a wide array of options for various occasions. Whether it’s a modern A-line silhouette, a glamorous off-shoulder design, or a bold cape-style creation, the boubou remains a symbol of sophistication, culture, and timeless beauty. The key to wearing these stunning designs lies in selecting a style that not only complements one’s body shape but also reflects individual taste and the significance of the event.
