(L-R): Xandy Kamel, Bimbo Ademoye and Ruth Kadiri have all complained about piracy (L-R): Xandy Kamel, Bimbo Ademoye and Ruth Kadiri have all complained about piracy

Lately, the trend of some Ghanaian TV stations airing movies without permission have become a major ‘headache’ for filmmakers in both Ghana and Nigeria.

Notable filmmakers have called out these Ghanaian TV stations for airing their movies without permission, sometimes just hours after the films are released.

Names like Ruth Kadiri, Bimbo Ademoye, Omoni Oboli, Mercy Johnson, Salma Mumin, Xandy Kamel, and Nosa Rex have all expressed their frustrations on social media.

However, in the midst of these concerns, what could be done to salvage the situation?

Xandy Kamel tearfully calls out TV station for pirating her movie two days after release

What the law says about copyright

Ghana’s Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), indicates that it is a crime to broadcast someone’s work without permission.

This law covers movies, TV shows, documentaries, and even sports programs.

It mentioned that anyone who breaks the law could be fined, imprisoned, or both.

On paper, this law is expected to protect filmmakers but the reality is, piracy continues because the laws are not enforced.

The authorities in charge often issue warnings, but there’s little to no proof that actions are being taken.

Three popular Nigerian filmmakers who have called out Ghanaian TV stations for piracy

Warnings without results

When piracy cases began making headlines earlier this year, the National Anti-Piracy Committee of the Copyright Office of Ghana issued a press statement on June 11, 2025.

The press statement which was signed by William Bonsu, warned TV stations against airing copyrighted works without proper licenses.

The National Anti-Piracy Committee said it had intensified surveillance and was working with law enforcement to stop the illegal practice.

But even after these warning, filmmakers kept complaining about the issue of piracy.

Responses from authorities

Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George, promised to take action in April 2025 after Nigerian actress Bimbo Ademoye complained that her film was pirated and tagged the minister on social media.

Sam George said he would discuss the matter with the minister responsible for TV content regulation and assured that his government respected intellectual property rights.

The Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, Kafui Danku, also promised to take action, telling filmmakers they would “see definite actions in a couple of weeks.”

But months later, the piracy complaints kept coming, this time from Mercy Johnson, Xandy Kamel, and Nosa Rex.

On August 1, 2025, Sam George spoke about the issue again at the Government Accountability Series when asked about it again by a journalist from Citi FM, saying the government had met with the National Film Authority and the National Media Commission to develop a framework for protecting intellectual property rights.

When will movie piracy stop?

Piracy takes away revenue from these filmmakers, scares off investors, and holds back the growth of the movie industry.

The laws on copyright may look strong on paper, but enforcement has been slow, and promises from officials have not led to change.

The major question is: how long will it take before Ghanaian TV stations stop airing pirated movies?

Until serious action is taken, like prosecuting offenders and making an example of them, the repeated violations are likely to keep happening.

Dr Omane Boamah sold his car to support my campaign – NDC Eastern Regional Chairman

Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Mark-Oliver Kevor, has eulogised the late former Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, describing him as generous, disciplined and loyal to the party and President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on August 12, 2025, Dr Kevor recalled how the late Dr Omane Boamah once sold his car to raise funds for his campaign for the regional chairmanship.

“He supported me in kind and cash. At one point, he sold his car to raise resources for my campaign. I became regional chairman, and we went on to support the national elections,” he said.

General News of Tuesday, 12 August 2025Source: www.ghanaweb.com’If you can’t help foot soldiers, don’t harm them’ – Omane Boamah’s last words to party leaders

Dr Kevor noted that before accepting the position of NDC Director of Elections and IT, the late Dr Omane Boamah consulted him and another colleague Gyeke Darko.

He disclosed that after the NDC’s defeat in the 2020 general elections outcome, some party members blamed Dr Omane Boamah; making him to nearly quit frontline politics.

However, Dr Kevor and others persuaded him to stay and work towards helping the party return to power.

“We believed that with his loyalty to President Mahama, it would only be fair for him to stay close and help Mahama win the next election, to redeem himself and change the narrative,” he stated.

According to Dr Kevor, the late minister’s discipline was a vital quality the party lacked in 2020, which contributed to its electoral loss.

Dr Edward Omane Boamah was among eight people who died in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The GFA noted that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance local football and motivate referees to deliver top-quality officiating, reducing the incidence of poor decisions during matches.

Speaking at the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress on August 12, 2025, GFA President Kurt Okraku said the reviewed conditions demonstrate his administration’s commitment to improving local football standards.

“Our referees will take centre stage in terms of their welfare going into the new season. The Executive Committee, having reviewed all operational needs, has approved new working conditions for our referees in the GPL, DoL, and WPL,” he stated.

Macron admits French repression in Cameroon’s independence struggle

France's actions in Cameroon are being investigated due to pressure from Cameroonians France’s actions in Cameroon are being investigated due to pressure from Cameroonians

French President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged the violence committed by his country’s forces in Cameroon during and after the Central African nation’s struggle for independence.

It followed a joint report by Cameroonian and French historians examining France’s suppression of independence movements from 1945 to 1971.

In a letter to Cameroon’s President Paul Biya made public on Tuesday, Macron said the report made clear “a war had taken place in Cameroon, during which the colonial authorities and the French army exercised repressive violence of several kinds in certain regions of the country”.

“It is up to me today to assume the role and responsibility of France in these events,” he said.

However, Macron fell short of offering a clear apology for the atrocities committed by French troops in its former colony, which gained independence in 1960.

The French leader cited four independence icons who were killed during military operations led by French forces, including Ruben Um Nyobe, the firebrand leader of the anti-colonialist UPC party.

France pushed hundreds of thousands of Cameroonians into internment camps and supported brutal militias to quash the independence struggle, the AFP news agency quotes the report as saying.

Tens of thousands of people were killed between 1956 and 1961, the historians’ report said.

The decision to investigate and publish the findings on France’s role in Cameroon’s independence struggle was made in 2022, during Macron’s visit to Yaoundé.

It followed pressure from within the country for France to acknowledge its atrocities in its former colony and pay reparations.

Macron also expressed willingness to work with Cameroon to promote further research on the matter, while highlighting the need for both countries to make the findings available to universities and scientific bodies.

The BBC has reached out to Cameroon’s government for comment on the French president’s admission.

While Macron did not address calls for reparations, it is likely to be a key talking-point in Cameroon going forward.

Under Macron, France has attempted to confront its brutal colonial past.

Last year, it acknowledged for the first time that its soldiers had carried out a “massacre” in Senegal in which West African troops were killed in 1944.

Macron has previously acknowledged France’s role in the Rwandan genocide, in which about 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus died, and sought forgiveness.

In 2021, he said France had not heeded warnings of impending carnage and had for too long “valued silence over examination of the truth”.

Kennedy Osei Speaks After Sudden Death of Michael Ofori

News Hub Creator4min

In a week already thick with grief, Kennedy Osei has spoken out — and his words carry the weight of a brother’s heartbreak.

Michael Kwesi Ofori, affectionately known as The General, wasn’t just the godson of business mogul Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong. He was family to the powerful Despite-Ofori circle — and to Kennedy, a friend so close he called him a brother.

A Shocking Goodbye No One Expected

News of Michael Ofori’s sudden passing broke on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, via a deeply emotional Instagram post by media personality Caleb Nii Boye.

“Aaw, Kwesi. Rest Well Bro. This pierced me so hard. 😭” Caleb wrote, echoing the disbelief shared by many.

Ofori was only in his 30s and had recently made headlines in 2023 for his lavish wedding to Rita Ofori Acheampong — a ceremony that saw Ghana’s elite, including Dr Osei Kwame Despite and Kennedy Osei, show up in grandeur.

The Member of Parliament for Ada and Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, has given a fresh account of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians.

The disaster, which happened at Adansi Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, killed Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, among others.

I scored 5 in BECE Twi while Ghanaian friends had 6, 7 – Kojo Choi – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Ghana’s Ambassador-Designate to South Korea, Kojo Choi, has shared a personal academic experience to emphasise his deep cultural integration and Ghanaian identity.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, August 12, Mr. Choi recounted how he excelled in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Twi, despite not speaking the language fluently when he first came to Ghana.

“I couldn’t speak Twi when I first arrived in Ghana. I attended SOS Junior High School in Tema, and that’s where I learnt it. I had an aggregate 5 in Ashanti Twi for BECE, while my Ghanaian friend, who is fully Ghanaian, had six, and another had seven. I had a pass mark, but it’s not easy to get that,” he said.

Mr. Choi explained that his early education at SOS College, a boarding school, restricted students to speaking only English, French, or Swedish. “I was privileged to pick pidgin language as my third language,” he recalled.

The diplomat added that his exposure to various cultures across Ghana also shaped his linguistic abilities. “I used to go to the Upper East Region when I was very young, and because they speak just the Frafra language, I can speak a little,” he noted.

Fluent in Twi and conversant in Frafra, Mr. Choi stressed his Ghanaian roots. “I am a full Ghanaian; I don’t hold any other passport apart from the Ghanaian passport. This is my home,” he affirmed.

International Youth Day celebration is call for action — Comfort Ocran

0

The Executive Director of the Springboard Road Show Foundation, Comfort Ocran, has described the International Youth Day celebration as a call to action.

She said it was a reminder that young people were not only leaders of tomorrow, but the changemakers of today, adding that “the future is here, and the future starts now”.

Mrs Ocran urged the youth to take the global goals and make them real within their respective communities.

The UN theme for this year was “Local youth actions for the SDGs and beyond.” The day was observed at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church yesterday.

It also marked the launch of Teenpreneurship Bootcamp on the theme: “Next Is Now”.

The programme, designed to equip teenagers with the skills, mindset and confidence to act immediately, was organised at no cost to 300 participants.

Ghana Grows

There was also the unveiling of the second edition of impact stories under a Ghana Grows programme dubbed “Rays of Hope”.

The stories celebrate the resilience and achievements of young women and men transforming agriculture, breaking barriers, and creating local solutions with national and global relevance.

Through the programme, over 448,000 young people have been impacted.

In all, 76 per cent of participants were young women, and 1.91 per cent were persons with disabilities. Under the initiative, 20,000 young people have secured jobs and sustainable livelihoods, while more than 2,400 Youth Ambassadors have been trained to champion agriculture and entrepreneurship nationwide.

In addition, an extended Empower 360 component of the programme had equipped more than 1,116 young women with practical skills and provided 156 young participants with startup kits to launch their own businesses.

The programme is being implemented by Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with a consortium led by the Springboard Road Show Foundation.

It aims at highlighting the opportunities available in the extended value chain for agriculture, agribusiness and ATVET.

The Lead, Market to Impact at the Mastercard Foundation, Joseph Boateng, said: “The SDGs are not distant targets set in boardrooms, they are lived realities in our villages, towns and cities.

Take action

The Technical Director of the Springboard Road Show Foundation, Albert Ocran, also encouraged the participants to take deliberate action.

“Inspiration without execution is only a dream.

What you do today, the projects you start, the risks you take, the ideas you pursue, will define the world you live in tomorrow,” he said.

Review national security arrest methods – Suhuyini urges – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Hamza Suhuyini, has called for a review of the operational methods used by national security operatives when effecting arrests.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, August 13, he commended President John Dramani Mahama for prioritising the rule of law over partisanship but stressed that certain security practices require urgent scrutiny.

“We are dealing with a president who prioritises the rule of law over mere partisanship, and that should give us hope. But when it comes to how national security operatives go about their operational mechanisms and carry out arrests, it is something we all must look at,” he said.

He noted that the use of aggressive tactics, such as breaking into homes at midnight, undermines public trust and could be exploited by criminals posing as security agents.

“It didn’t start with this regime; it happened under the past NPP government. This government has promised arrests, but we need to look at the manner of arrest, especially breaking people’s homes at midnight. I cannot in all honesty defend that on any platform.

“We need to look at the modus operandi of national security when it comes to arrests, because if care is not taken, criminals will take advantage of that,” he added.

Mr. Suhuyini’s comments come in the wake of the reported abduction of Wontumi TV presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare on Tuesday, August 12, in Ejisu Krapa, Ashanti Region.

Eyewitnesses said unidentified armed men arrived in unmarked vehicles, fired warning shots, and forcibly took the journalist away without identifying themselves or stating their intentions. They then sped off from the scene.

The motive behind the abduction remains unclear, and the presenter’s whereabouts are yet to be confirmed.

Kwame Adom Appiah, one of the lawyers for Wontumi Multimedia, told Citi News that two witnesses reported hearing gunshots after Akyemkwaa attempted to run for safety. “His effort to run away from them was for his safety,” the lawyer explained.

Hearts of Oak technical team provides fitness and availability update on 11 players

0

Accra Hearts of Oak’s technical team has released an update on the status of 11 players as preparations continue for the new campaign.

Midfielder Seth Osei has not trained fully since the team resumed on July 21, 2025, after falling ill earlier in the month.

He missed training following his illness on July 7 and only returned between August 4–7. The technical told ghanasportspage.com.

Defender Samuel Amofa has been identified as needing more game time to sharpen his match fitness. The same applies to Yaya Adramani, who, despite not being a young player, is seen as potentially more useful to the squad given his good work attitude.

Full-back Michael Ampadu, whose contract has expired, is also in need of more minutes, while Asamoah Boateng has been flagged as underperforming but still requiring match action to assess his readiness.

Striker Evans Adomako, midfielder Humphrey Tetteh, forward Albert Amanfo, winger Rashid Okine, midfielder Isaac Frimpong, and forward Akwasi Nketia have all been listed as players who need additional game minutes to improve sharpness and form.

The update underscores the technical team’s intention to rotate the squad and provide opportunities for fringe players as Hearts prepare for competitive fixtures ahead.

Rumours of sabotage within the Ghanaian creative arts industry, where some entertainers have claimed to be undermined by colleagues and industry players, seem not to be ending soon, as gospel musician Empress Gifty has now joined the conversation.

In a live TikTok video shared on social media on August 12, 2025, the “Watch Me” singer recounted a challenge she faced during her first trip to the United Kingdom.

According to Empress Gifty, one of her colleagues, whose identity she chose not to reveal, had invited her to the UK.

However, upon her arrival, the individual ignored her repeated calls, which further led to her deportation.

“When I got to the airport, the immigration officers asked me who I was going to visit, and I mentioned the name. They then asked me if I had called the person before getting to the airport, and I told them yes. So they asked me to call her, but after calling her several times, the person refused to pick up my calls.

“The immigration officers started calling her from 6 AM to 4 PM, but my friend didn’t pick up my calls. They then took me to a room where there were a lot of cameras and everyone was even looking at me,” she said.

Empress Gifty further shared that efforts made by the then-Ghanaian foreign minister to the UK to retain her proved futile.

“I called my ex-husband, and he called the then foreign minister, who was Hannah Tetteh. She even called the immigration officers to allow me to stay in my hotel room. But they refused. They were like, until the girl picks up the calls, they were not going to allow me to enter the UK,” she said.

Empress noted that she was deported the same day, adding that her recent travel in the UK was to purposely shame the said individuals who mocked her.

Ellen Ama Daaku is a communications officer of the New Patriotic Party play videoEllen Ama Daaku is a communications officer of the New Patriotic Party

Ellen Ama Daaku, a communications officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has taken a swipe at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several people.

Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV/FM, Ama Daaku asserted that the ruling NDC is to be blamed for the horrific incident.

Defence Minister Dr Omane Boamah, Dr Murtala Mohammed and others dead

According to her, the incident would not have happened if the NDC, when it was in opposition, had not opposed an attempt by the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government to acquire new planes and helicopters for the Ghana Armed Forces.

“As for you, your witchcraft has made your people die in a plane crash. We are all quiet, but it was because of their witchcraft. Let me explain to you why I said this happened because of their witchcraft.

“Two years ago, His Excellency Nana Addo, through his defence minister, Dominic Nitiwul, went to Parliament and said that we need to retool our military. What transpired? Okudzeto Ablakwa, with his teeth like a plier used to break glass, descended on Akufo-Addo in this country, a whole president,” she said in the Twi dialect.

“Anytime Nana Addo travels, he (Ablakwa) goes to the airlines to ask how much it costs. Were we not in this country? Did they call him to order? During that time, if they had been quiet for us to order the planes and helicopters (sic)… we might not have encountered this tragedy,” she added.

On August 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 military helicopter crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi Akrofuom District, Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.

The helicopter was en route from Kotoka International Airport in Accra to Obuasi for an event on combating illegal mining.

Among the victims were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah; Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Sarpong; former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye; and three crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The wreckage was found burned, with all victims burnt beyond recognition, necessitating DNA analysis for identification.

While the Ghana Armed Forces has announced an investigation into the crash, the actual cause of the accident has yet to be identified. However, speculations remain rife.

Ghana bans export of rice, corn and soyabeans to address food shortage

Ghana is following countries such as Nigeria and Ivory Coast to restrict grain exports Ghana is following countries such as Nigeria and Ivory Coast to restrict grain exports

In August 2024, Ghana banned the export of certain grains, including rice, corn, and soy.

The decision was aimed at preventing drought-induced food shortages in West Africa.

Read the full story originally published on August 27, 2024 by Bloomberg.

Ghana is banning the export of some grains including rice, corn and soy to avert a drought-induced food shortage in the West African nation.

Drought and near-drought conditions over the past two months have increased the risk of crop failure in a part of the country responsible for about 62% of Ghana’s grain production, Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong told reporters Monday in the capital, Accra. The six affected regions are mostly in the north.

As much as 1.8 million hectares of land are at risk and farmers growing food on roughly half that area have already been impacted, he said.

“We are forecasting a significant shortfall in grain availability,” said Acheampong. “Without any interventions, this could lead to a nationwide food shortage.”

Krachi East yam farmers face crisis as prices plunge

Ghana is following countries such as Nigeria and Ivory Coast to restrict grain exports this year to improve food security. This comes after a swathe of southern Africa – including Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe – suffered the driest February in at least four decades, wiping out crops. That particular drought was blamed on the El Niño weather phenomenon.

Ghana plans to raise $500 million to mitigate the impact of the grain shortage, including about $155 million from the World Bank and other development partners, Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam said Monday.

Authorities will tap the funding to offer some compensation to affected farmers, with payments of 1,000 cedis ($64) per hectare. The country also intends to import grain to make up for the shortage, he said.

These imports will likely weaken the currency and raise the risk of food inflation, Amin Adam said. Ghana’s annual inflation rate is already hovering above 20%.

Former Asante Kotoko coach, Isaac Adade Boateng popularly known as Coach Opeele has called on Ghanaian MPs who opposed the extension of term limits for the president of the Ghana Football Association to resign after serving two terms in Parliament.

According to coach Opeele, MPs do not have any moral right to criticize the GFA for extending the term limit of the President from two to three because they themselves don’t have a fixed term limit.

The 31st Ordinary Congress of the GFA on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, by a majority decision approved the proposal to extend the term limit of the president from two to three.

Reacting to this, coach Opeele took to his X page to announce the decision of Congress while urging MPs who are against the approval to resign from their positions after serving two terms in Parliament.

Mali soldiers arrested over coup allegations: What we know

Frustration has grown since the military government banned political parties and extended its rule indefinitely.

Published On 12 Aug 2025

Tensions are high in Mali’s capital, Bamako, after the arrests of dozens of soldiers in recent days, including two high-ranking generals. Although shops and offices stayed open on Tuesday, residents, including one journalist, told Al Jazeera the atmosphere there is uneasy.

Mali’s military government has so far remained silent about the spate of arrests. However, unofficial reports said the soldiers are being detained for their alleged involvement in a coup plot that aimed to overthrow General Assimi Goita’s government.

The landlocked West African country, located in the semiarid Sahel region, is embroiled in a myriad of political and security crises. The recent arrests, analysts said, mark the first time the military is cracking down on soldiers within its ranks on suspicion of a coup.

Here’s what you need to know about the arrests:

Who was arrested and why?

Conflicting reports have emerged since the arrests over the weekend and on Monday.

Reports by the French news channel RFI put the number of arrested soldiers at at least 50 while the Reuters news agency reported 36 to 40 soldiers have been detained.

Two generals are reportedly among them.

Abass Dembele, a former military governor of the northern region of Mopti, was arrested on Sunday morning in his home in Kati, a garrison town just outside Bamako, according to RFI.

Dembele is popular among Malian soldiers and has a reputation as an officer who often leads from the front. He was active in the northern war of 2012, a civil war that broke out after Tuareg separatists parlayed with armed groups to seize more than 60 percent of the country. The failure of the Malian army to push the rebels back prompted France to deploy thousands of soldiers

Air force General Nema Sagara is another top official believed to be detained. Sagara is one of the few high-ranking female military officials in Mali and throughout the region. She is also one of the few female Malian officers to have been drafted into battle when she fought in the civil war of 2013.

Al Jazeera, however, could not independently confirm the veracity of the reports.

What is happening in Mali?

Since 2012, Mali’s army has battled a swarm of armed groups in the north, including Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the ISIL (ISIS) affiliate in the greater Sahara (ISGS).

The fighting has resulted in thousands of deaths while up to 350,000 people are currently displaced, according to Human Rights Watch. Several northern towns in rebel-held territory are under siege by the armed groups, limiting food, fuel and medical supplies. The groups operate in the Mali-Burkina Faso-Niger border area.

Promising to end the violence, then-Colonel Goita, 41, took power in two successive coups in 2020 and 2021. He was sworn in as transitional president in June 2021. Under his control, the country severed ties with its former coloniser, France, and thousands of French soldiers involved in the fight against the armed groups exited the country.

The military rulers have since turned to Russian private mercenaries and military officials under the Wagner Group and Africa Corps. The army and the Russians have recorded wins but also heavy losses.

What has the military government said?

The military government has not put out an official statement stating the reasons for the arrests.

RFI quoted an unnamed Malian senior military officer close to the government as saying the soldiers were arrested because “they wanted to destabilise the transition,” referring to the military government, which calls itself a transitional government that is expected eventually to hand over power to a civilian administration.

Many of those arrested were confirmed by RFI to be members of the national guard. The special unit is headed by Defence Minister and General Sadio Camara. In elite military circles in Bamako, Camara is increasingly seen as a rival to Goita although they were both part of the team of coup leaders who seized power. The rifts inside the military come as some of Goita’s policies have begun to irk many, both in the military and among civilians.

This week’s arrests, some critics said, are the strongest sign yet that the military’s control is weakening from the inside. While Goita is the head of state, he appears not to have complete control over the armed forces, analysts said.

Due to the reported cracks, the military government will want to project a strong image, hence its silence, Beverly Ochieng, a Sahel analyst with the intelligence firm Control Risks, told Al Jazeera.

“[These arrests] indicate some pronounced divisions,” Ochieng said. “Quite a few red lines have been crossed in recent months, and people are bound to be tired. It is likely that the military leadership will maintain and project a united front to downplay vulnerabilities and internal rivalries.”

Interim president of the Republic of Mali Assimi Goita attends a signing ceremony following his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia on June 23, 2025.

Is there a crackdown on dissent?

Critics said Goita’s recent policies appear to attack dissenters and aim to shrink the civic space in the troubled country.

Goita’s government, for example, approved a bill in July that would allow him to seek a five-year presidential mandate, renewable “as many times as necessary” and without requiring an election. Earlier, when it seized power, the military promised to hand over power to civilians in 2024.

In May, the military government dissolved political parties and organisations and banned political meetings, drawing condemnation from opposition politicians and rights groups.

In addition, the military government has targeted outspoken critics. This month, former Prime Minister Moussa Mara was arrested and charged with “undermining the credibility of the state” after he visited political prisoners and posted about seeking justice for them.

“As long as the night lasts, the sun will obviously appear!” Mara had written on July 4 in a social media post, adding: “We will fight by all means for this to happen as soon as possible!”

Choguel Maiga, who was the prime minister until his ouster in November, has also accused Goita’s government of targeting him. Although Maiga was once a champion of the government, he became critical of Goita this year. In July, the government accused him of fraud and embezzlement during his time in office and launched an investigation.

What else is fuelling anger in the country?

Alongside the political situation, a lack of security remains rife in the country, causing frustration among many Malians.

Several armed groups continue to operate in the north, including JNIM. Human Rights Watch (HRW) blames the military forces and their Russian counterparts for targeting civilians indiscriminately on the assumption that they work with armed groups. At least 12 men from the Fulani ethnic group appear to have been executed and 81 forcibly disappeared since January, HRW said in a report.

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which are also military led, banded together to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) this year after they withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States. They also created a 5,000-strong force for joint military operations to try to drive out armed groups.

Separately, the Malian army is once again battling Tuareg separatists. Although there were peace agreements made after the 2012 war that allowed the northern region of Kidal to maintain a semiautonomous nature, the military government under Goita has torn up the peace deals and returned to fighting, forcing hundreds of people to flee across the border to Mauritania.

In late July, Malian forces said they killed 70 “terrorists” in a raid in the north without specifying if those killed were with an armed group or were separatists.

I naturalised as Ghanaian in 1999 – Kojo Choi

0

Ghana’s Ambassador Designate to Korea, Kojo Choi, has shared how his father influenced his decision to remain in Ghana and eventually become a naturalised citizen.

Mr Choi said he was 14 years old when he first arrived in Ghana with his Korean Presbyterian missionary parents. He attended SOS College in Tema, where he learned some Twi and later picked up a bit of the Frafra language.

Choi, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, said he has lived in Ghana since his adolescence and was naturalised as a Ghanaian in 1999.

Speaking on Channel One’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, August 12, Kojo Choi said, “I was born in South Korea, I came here [Ghana] when I was 14 years old, I followed my parents. I lived in Seoul, the province where I was born. My parents were sent here as Korean Presbyterian missionaries. Ever since I came here, I have actually lived a unique life.”

Choi revealed that after completing SOS College, he had the opportunity to study in the United States. However, his father advised him to stay in Ghana and build a unique life.

He said that decision led him to take Ghanaian citizenship in 1999 — a choice he has never regretted.

“I had the opportunity of going to study in the US. At SOS college, everybody had the opportunity to apply to 15 to 20 universities to get admission. I was going to apply, and my father one day called me and sat me down, and said, ‘Son, why do you want to leave Ghana. You could stay here, and you could be a different person altogether. Honestly, I wanted to leave but decided to stay. And made a solemn vow to myself that I was not going back, and that was when I naturalised in 1999.”

His appointment generated debate on social media, with some critics questioning why the role was not given to a Ghanaian by birth.

Responding to such concerns, Choi said his life in Ghana has been unique and deeply rooted in the country’s culture and society.

Market Rally Sparks Investor Optimism – But Caution Urged

stock market
stock market

Global stock markets surged to record highs this week, fueled by cooling U.S. inflation data and widespread bets that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in September.

Major indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite posted robust gains, while small-cap stocks outperformed sharply. Traders appear convinced that cheaper borrowing costs will bolster corporate prospects.

Yet Nigel Green, CEO of financial advisory firm deVere Group, cautions that the rally might be overheating. “Early August often sees seasonal buying, but declaring a sustained summer upswing feels premature,” he says.

Short-term momentum, he argues, can mask fragility. Tuesday’s 3% leap in the Russell 2000 reflects hope for rate cuts—especially after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pushed the Fed toward aggressive action. Futures markets now price in a 94% chance of a September reduction.

But Green sees red flags. Thin August trading volumes and fleeting sentiment shifts, not solid earnings growth, are lifting stocks. When restaurant chain Cava slashed its annual forecast post-close Tuesday, its shares plummeted 22%.

“This isn’t the uniform strength you’d expect in a durable bull market,” Green notes. He also warns that Fed policy isn’t a guaranteed tailwind. If inflation rebounds or policymakers strike a cautious tone at Jackson Hole later this month, the optimism could unravel swiftly.

Broader risks linger, too. Europe’s recovery remains uneven, Asian markets are volatile, and U.S.-China trade tensions simmer. “Geopolitical and macroeconomic challenges haven’t vanished,” Green emphasizes.

For investors, he advises discipline: “Chasing records is tempting, but understand whether prices reflect fundamentals or just seasonal euphoria. August has a history of false security.”

The key, he stresses, is to manage risk before the market forces your hand.

Canal+ willing to engage Ghana over DSTV dispute – Sam George – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, has said that French media giant Vivendi’s Canal+, which has acquired MultiChoice, is prepared to engage with Ghanaian authorities to address the ongoing dispute over DSTV subscription rates.

The stand-off began on August 1, 2025, when Mr. George, speaking at the Government Accountability Series, directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend MultiChoice-owned DSTV’s broadcasting licence if the company failed to reduce subscription prices by August 7.

MultiChoice rejected the directive in an August 3 statement signed by Alex Okyere, Managing Director of DSTV Ghana. The company insisted it remained committed to keeping prices as low as possible without compromising service quality, but argued that the minister’s proposed reductions were not feasible.

Speaking on Joy FM on August 12, the minister noted that Canal+, which already holds over a third of MultiChoice’s shares and has secured anti-trust approval in South Africa for a complete takeover, has signalled its willingness to engage Ghana’s regulator once the acquisition is finalised.

“They are aware of the situation going on here in Ghana, and I have made it clear to them,” Mr. George noted.

“They have reached out, and I have made it clear to them: if they want to come into Ghana and operate on the license that the company they are buying has, this is our request. They’ve made certain indications, and I said to them I want it in writing.”

Mr. George disclosed that Canal+ has already secured approval from South Africa’s competition commission, with the full takeover expected to be completed by October. “I believe that should kick in sometime from September, and so Canal+ is the one taking over,” he said.

The Minister stressed that the government would only act on formal commitments.

“I don’t want to take public policy decisions on the basis of phone calls that have been made to me. I’ve asked them to put it in an official letter. Canal+ is willing to talk to us. I will not run from the fact that Canal+’s attitude is more positive than that of MultiChoice,” he added.

Man with fake identity in England runs to Ghana after tragic death of teen in his care

The man, known at the time as Ebo Acheampong, was employed at Huntercombe Hospital The man, known at the time as Ebo Acheampong, was employed at Huntercombe Hospital

A care worker who secured a job in England using false identity documents fled to Ghana after a 14-year-old girl died while under his supervision, according to telegraph.co.uk report.

The man, known at the time as Ebo Acheampong, was employed at Huntercombe Hospital in Taplow, Berkshire, through an agency, although his name and identification were allegedly fake.

He had been tasked with providing round-the-clock, one-to-one supervision for teenager Ruth Szymankiewicz, who was receiving treatment for an eating disorder.

According to a Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court documents, Ruth had been placed under strict monitoring after a self-harm incident just 10 days earlier.

However, on February 12, 2022, Acheampong failed to follow the constant supervision plan.

According to the report, Coroner Ian Wade KC said the care worker ended his shift around 8 P.M. without knowing Ruth’s whereabouts or handing her over to another staff member.

She was left unsupervised for 15 minutes, during which she asphyxiated herself.

“You will not hear from that man, and he let Ruth down, ” the coroner is reported to have told jurors.

Shortly after the incident, Acheampong disappeared from the hospital and never returned.

Police later discovered that he had boarded a flight from Heathrow Airport to Ghana and had not been seen since.

A post-mortem examination determined Ruth’s preliminary cause of death to be hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen.

The court also heard that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) had carried out two inspections of Huntercombe Hospital prior to the incident, both of which identified concerns about its operations.

At the time of Ruth’s death, the facility was operated by Active Care Group, which has since closed the hospital.

Policy consistency, stable economy key to cedi confidence – Adolph Kpegah

0

Adolph Kpegah, Executive Director, Strategy and Operations at Absa Bank Ghana, has highlighted the importance of policy consistency and macroeconomic stability in restoring public confidence in the cedi and in discouraging the preference for hard foreign currency.

Speaking at the recent 11th Absa-UPSA Quarterly Banking Roundtable, Kpegah highlighted that sustained macroeconomic stability and policy consistency are critical to restoring trust in the cedi and reducing reliance on foreign currency.

He explained that the tendency for some businesses to price goods and services in US dollars reflects past volatility in the cedi’s value.

“The inclination of some sections of the public to prefer FX to the cedi has partly been influenced by the cedi’s inability to retain value in the past. When a currency fails to hold value, individuals will naturally seek alternatives that better preserve their economic interest.

“Hence, a sustained period of stability is necessary for confidence in and preference for the cedi or cedi-backed instruments as a store of value,” he said.

He observed that while there are early signs of growing optimism, such as recent reports of businesses in the real estate sector switching back to cedi pricing following the currency’s appreciation in the second quarter of 2025, lasting behavioural change will only follow a sustained period of stability.

Kpegah called for a comprehensive policy approach, including avoiding abrupt shifts in monetary and fiscal policy, enforcing foreign exchange regulations to curb illegal pricing practices, maintaining prudent fiscal management, and planning ahead to manage external shocks.

He commended the coordinated policy efforts by the Bank of Ghana and Ministry of Finance, while acknowledging the influence of broader external developments.

He concluded that the path to restoring confidence in the cedi is neither short nor simple.

“It demands sustained policy discipline, institutional credibility, and a deliberate effort to reshape public sentiment,” he stated.

As Ghana continues its journey toward financial sovereignty, Kpegah noted, ongoing dialogue such as that provided by the Absa-UPSA Quarterly Banking Roundtable is essential for fostering accountability and innovation.

He praised the organisers for engaging students in these national conversations, describing this inclusive approach as vital for nurturing future leaders capable of navigating Ghana’s economic challenges.

The Absa-UPSA Quarterly Banking Roundtable, organised by the UPSA Law School in partnership with Absa Bank Ghana, brings together leaders from finance, law, and academia to discuss key economic and policy issues affecting the country.

Olympic gold medalist, Sha’Carri Richardson has broken her silence following a heated public altercation with her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The incident occurred on July 27, 2025, and was captured on surveillance footage later reviewed by police.

The video showed Richardson shoving Coleman multiple times, grabbing his backpack, and appearing to throw an object at him during a dispute near a TSA checkpoint.

Despite Coleman’s attempts to walk away and de-escalate the situation, the confrontation escalated, resulting in Richardson’s arrest on a charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

Commenting on her arrest for the first time in a social media post, the Olympic gold and silver medallist said: “I’m not perfect, and I take full responsibility for my actions. I’m working on myself and will be getting help to handle my emotions better, she said.

Ghanaian TikToker Fante Comedy Arrested Over Controversial Video Mocking Helicopter Crash Victims

0

In a startling development that has captured the attention of both social media users and the public at large, according to a report by Ghbase News, Ghanaian TikTok personality Fante Comedy has been apprehended by the National Security apparatus.

This arrest follows the emergence of a viral video in which he made inflammatory remarks about the victims of a recent helicopter crash, as well as issuing threats directed at prominent political figures, including Sammy Gyamfi and President John Dramani Mahama.

The video, which rapidly circulated across various platforms, sparked outrage among viewers and prompted swift action from authorities. In it, Fante Comedy not only ridiculed the tragic incident but also made alarming statements that many interpreted as direct threats against Gyamfi and Mahama.

The content of the video drew significant condemnation, with many calling it disrespectful and deeply insensitive, particularly in light of the lives lost in the helicopter crash.

In response to the public outcry and the potential implications of the video’s content, the National Security Agency acted quickly, leading to Fante Comedy’s arrest. He was taken into custody for questioning, along with several individuals believed to be associated with the production and dissemination of the controversial video.

This move underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the matter, particularly given the current climate surrounding national security and the need for responsible discourse in media.

The incident has ignited a broader conversation about the role of social media influencers and content creators in shaping public opinion and the responsibilities that come with their platform.

Critics argue that while humor and satire play a significant role in entertainment, they should not come at the expense of empathy, especially concerning tragic events that affect many lives.

As the investigation unfolds, questions linger about the potential legal ramifications for Fante Comedy and others involved. The case highlights the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the need for accountability in a digital age where content can quickly go viral, often without regard for the consequences.

Public sentiment remains divided on the issue, with some defending Fante Comedy’s right to express his views while others assert that his comments crossed a line that should not be tolerated.

The incident serves as a reminder of the impact that media personalities can have on societal attitudes and the need for responsible behavior in the face of serious matters.

As authorities continue their inquiries, the developments surrounding this case will likely keep the public engaged and may serve as a catalyst for discussions on the ethical responsibilities of social media influencers in Ghana and beyond.

The nation watches closely as the narrative evolves, hoping for a resolution that respects both the victims of the helicopter crash and the principles of free speech.

Wontumi Radio denies issuing apology to Mahama over crash comments

0

A management member of Wontumi Radio in Accra, Gordon Asare Bediako, has dismissed claims that Wontumi Multimedia issued an official apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public over remarks linking the President to the recent military helicopter crash.

The denial follows the circulation of a statement purportedly from Wontumi TV — owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi — apologising for comments made by one of its presenters, Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

The presenter had alleged that President Mahama was involved in the tragic crash. The purported statement described the claims as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to the values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.”

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, August 12, Mr. Asare Bediako stressed that management never issued such an apology, suggesting the statement originated from unauthorised online accounts amid heightened tensions between Wontumi Multimedia and the National Communications Authority (NCA) over the suspension of three of its radio stations, including Wontumi Radio Accra.

“That came to us in Accra as a surprise. When we checked with Kumasi, we were told that there was nothing like that official apology or retraction or whatever. In fact, because of this communication from the NCA and the subsequent action, we were in the office of the lawyer for hours. While at that, somebody called to tell us that there was a letter in circulation.

“When we checked, we realised that it was not on the official social media handle of Wontumi Multimedia. There are several fake, unauthorised social media handles of Wontuni Multimedia, which are not utilised, and it was one of these that they used. Later, I saw that a ‘fake’ stamp had been used on it,” he explained.

He added that there has been no official communication from security agencies regarding the broadcaster’s reported arrest, and the identity of those who apprehended him remains unknown.

ChaLoG rejects proposal to extend presiding members’ tenure to four years – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLoG) has rejected proposals to extend the tenure of office for Presiding Members (PMs) of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies from two years to four years.

The proposal, championed by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, argued that the current two-year term is too short for PMs to make a meaningful impact, and that a four-year tenure would allow them sufficient time to deliver on their mandate and leave a lasting legacy.

Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the President of ChaLoG, Dr. Richard Fiadomor, said the extension would effectively grant one person prolonged leadership over their peers, which contradicts the principle of fairness in local governance.

“The reason some people are pushing this agenda is that they are comparing the tenure of the PM to that of the Speaker of Parliament. But the Speaker of Parliament is not, in themselves, a member of Parliament, even though members vote for them. Based on this principle, a PM cannot be given a four-year mandate,” he explained.

Dr. Fiadomor acknowledged that electing PMs can be challenging due to the legal requirement of securing a two-thirds majority. However, he maintained that the current arrangement ensures accountability and prevents the concentration of power in one individual’s hands.

“Because of the challenges we have faced in the past in electing a PM — which, for me, is quite normal — some argue that once you go through the headache of electing one, you should not have to repeat the process until four years later. This is why they make such arguments,” he added.

Let’s not rush to replace Murtala – Asiedu Nketia to Tamale Central

0

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed gratitude to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for announcing its withdrawal from the upcoming Tamale Central by-election.

He, however, cautioned prospective aspirants not to rush the process of selecting a successor to the late Dr. Murtala Mohammed.

The NPP, on Monday, August 11, 2025, declared that it would not field a candidate in the race following the tragic death of Tamale Central’s Member of Parliament, Dr. Mohammed, in the August 6 helicopter crash.

Dr. Mohammed’s passing has created a vacancy in the constituency, triggering preparations for a by-election as required by the constitution.

The NPP explained that its decision to step aside was to help avoid further political divisions during a period of national mourning.

Reacting to the development on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, during the Adua funeral rite for the late MP, Mr. Asiedu Nketia urged NDC members to avoid internal conflicts over the seat.

“We thank our brothers in the NPP for declaring that they will not contest us in Tamale Central. Now the challenge is ours — whether we will fight among ourselves over who should replace Murtala. On behalf of the party, I want to say, let us not rush in choosing his successor,” he said.

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, died alongside Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, and three other high officials and three servicemen.

NPA threatens closure of illegal Fuel Stations

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has warned that it will close down or decommission all outlets operating in the petroleum downstream sector without the required license.

In a public notice, the Authority said it had observed that some individuals were engaged in the illegal storage and marketing of petroleum products.

It cautioned such persons to comply with the necessary regulatory requirements to avoid sanctions.

The NPA referred to the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (Act 691) as amended, which states that no person shall engage in any petroleum downstream business without a license issued by the NPA Board.

It explained that the downstream sector covers activities such as the importation, exportation, transportation, processing, refining, storage, distribution, marketing, and sale of products including crude oil, gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, and kerosene.

The Authority added that a license can only be granted to a Ghanaian or a foreign company in a registered joint venture with a Ghanaian, in line with local content rules.

It noted that licensed operators were also required to display their license in a prominent place on their premises.

The NPA urged members of the public to contact its offices or visit its website for more information.

Rihanna discussed the pressure of having two sons Rihanna discussed the pressure of having two sons

Rihanna has been talking about her kids and how they have influenced her work.

With people already guessing whether the couple’s third child would be a girl or a boy, she has discussed the pressure of having two sons and suggested that she wants a girl.

However, Rihanna earlier told The Grio that when it comes to their baby’s gender, “That’s the one thing me and Rocky don’t fight over.”

She did, however, confirm that the next child will join the “R” name club, exactly like their brothers.

The soon-to-be mother of three, who recently attended the Los Angeles premiere of the Smurfs movie, also told Extra, “Are you guys gonna be so hurt if it’s a boy? I’ve always wanted a girl. God knows best, and I love my boy.”

The 37-year-old singer-actress and 36-year-old rapper A$AP Rocky already have two boys together: Riot, who is 23 months old, and RZA, who is three years old.

On the subject of her kids, the “Diamonds” singer disclosed that they have turned into her toughest critics. She told Complex, “Oh yeah, I mean, the pressure is on. My critics are literally my kids. I’m hoping that I get some cool points with this one.”

She added, “I would like to do things that inspire them. Things they can be proud of in all aspects of my career, so this is one of the things that feels right and natural for me to do.”

The mompreneur also revealed to ‘E! News’ that Riot and RZA have both developed a passion for music.

“Both of them love music. It’s insane because I’m like, ‘Is that me or you, Rocky?” She told the publication. “They love instruments. They love music.”

Riot also enjoys freestyling, something the proud mother claimed he inherited from his father. “That’s definitely a Rocky thing, not me,” she remarked.

The couple, who have been dating since 2020, announced on May 5 that they are now expecting their third child, according to People. Rihanna showed off her baby belly while walking around New York City, and Rocky confirmed the good news on the Met Gala red carpet in 2025.

At the time of their first child’s birth, Rihanna and A$AP had no explicit plans to start a family, but the “Work” singer told Vogue that they were “certainly not planning against it” either.

“I always thought it would be marriage first, then a baby, but who the f— says it has to be that way,” she told the outlet in April 2022. “I’m certainly not gonna let that get in the way of me being a mom.”

An exclusive source told People that the couple is “thrilled to be growing their family” after the couple’s major pregnancy announcement at the Met Gala.

The insider also highlighted why the couple preferred to have their children close in age. “Rihanna has always wanted a big family, so she couldn’t be more excited. Rihanna and Rocky are thrilled to be growing their family, and they can’t wait to give their boys another sibling,” the exclusive source told People.

“They wanted to have their children close together in age, so that they could grow up together and share a close bond. They feel so blessed and are so grateful for this next chapter in their lives. It’s a very special time,” they added.

The Power of African Print Fashion for Black Women

0

African print fashion has long transcended borders, making a global impact with its bold colors, striking patterns, and deep cultural roots. From the bustling markets of Accra to the fashion runways of Paris and New York, African prints—often known as Ankara, Kente, or Wax fabric—have become synonymous with cultural pride, creative expression, and unapologetic beauty.

For Black women especially, African print clothing represents far more than a wardrobe choice. It’s a statement of heritage, a reclamation of cultural identity, and a celebration of African beauty in all its diversity. As Nigerian designer Amaka Nwosu once said, “Wearing African prints is like wearing a story—one stitched with pride, history, and purpose.”

A Cultural Legacy in Every Pattern

Each African print carries symbolism rooted in generations of tradition. Whether it’s the interlocking lines of Kente representing unity, or the blooming florals on Ankara showcasing growth and resilience, these patterns tell stories of the African experience—past and present. For Black women, embracing these fabrics means wrapping oneself in ancestral strength and storytelling.

The vibrant colors and intricate designs also serve as a medium for personal expression. Whether you prefer bold contrasts or subtle elegance, there’s an African print that reflects your spirit. This versatility allows every woman to feel seen, celebrated, and powerful in her own skin.

Where Tradition Meets Modern Elegance

Modern African print fashion has masterfully fused tradition with contemporary style. Today’s designs feature everything from peplum blouses and off-shoulder gowns to sleek jumpsuits and tailored blazers. These pieces can easily transition from cultural ceremonies to urban events, offering fashion-forward choices that remain deeply rooted in tradition.

A classy African print dress can take many forms—flowy maxi dresses perfect for weddings, structured midi dresses ideal for work, or fitted styles that exude confidence at social gatherings. With the right tailoring, these outfits highlight the natural beauty and curves of Black women, while maintaining elegance and sophistication.

Styling the Statement

African prints are a canvas for creativity when it comes to accessorizing. Pairing a dress with minimalist jewelry, a bold clutch, and statement heels elevates the outfit while letting the print shine. Headwraps made from matching fabric or complementary designs add a majestic flair, paying homage to regal African traditions.

The beauty lies in the balance—allowing the dress to speak while choosing accessories that enhance its impact. Whether it’s gold accents, braided hairstyles, or natural makeup, the styling options are as limitless as the stories the prints tell.

More Than Fashion—It’s Empowerment

Wearing African print fashion is a powerful declaration of self-love and cultural pride. In a world that often pushes homogenized beauty standards, Black women donning African prints reclaim space, voice, and identity. It’s a conscious choice to embrace one’s heritage while stepping boldly into modern womanhood.

‎‎FG names KWAM 1 aviation security ambassador after airport incident

0

The Federal Government has announced plans to engage Fuji star, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol, after the recent controversy over his conduct at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

‎This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in a statement outlining resolutions to recent cases of unruly behaviour at Nigerian airports.

‎Keyamo said the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had agreed to reduce KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month and would work with the musician to promote awareness on acceptable conduct within the aviation space.

‎The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria will lead the engagement process.

‎”The NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.

‎”Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the police,” the statement read.

‎The minister added that the decision followed appeals from well-meaning individuals, as well as KWAM 1’s public show of penitence over the August 5 incident in which he allegedly obstructed a ValueJet aircraft’s movement.

‎Keyamo also revealed that the NCAA would withdraw its criminal complaints against the artiste.

‎The development comes days after the musician apologised to the public, insisting the flask he carried on the day of the incident contained water for medical reasons and not alcohol, as was alleged by security personnel.

‎The minister emphasised that the clemency was granted on “compassionate grounds” , warning that the government remained committed to enforcing safety and security laws in the aviation sector.

‎On August 5, KWAM 1 was involved in a confrontation with airline staff and security officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while attempting to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos.

He was accused of carrying a prohibited flask believed to contain alcohol, spilling its contents on personnel, and later walking onto the aircraft’s tarmac, allegedly blocking the plane from taxiing.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority described the act as a breach of aviation safety regulations and initially placed him on a six-month no-fly list while filing a criminal complaint with the police.

Appiah-Kubi calls for dialogue over suspension of Wontumi radio stations – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Lawyer for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has urged dialogue following the suspension of three radio stations under the Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) suspended 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi over breaches of broadcasting regulations. The infractions included unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from unapproved transmitter locations.

The action followed the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama for defaulting stations to rectify violations.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on August 12, with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Appiah-Kubi said there was a need for engagement between the NCA and Wontumi Multimedia to identify and address shortcomings.

“I think there’s a need for us to comply with the directive. We have to meet the requirements under the law, and that is what the regulator expects us to do.

“Granted that the expectations were not met, I think that there’s a need for us to engage and see where the shortfalls are and do as much as we can to fulfil the expectations and get back to normalcy,” he proposed.

Concerns rise over imports of cheap substitute milk into Ghana

0

Thousands of euros in Irish public money are being spent on pushing cheap substitute 'milk' into Gha Thousands of euros in Irish public money are being spent on pushing cheap substitute ‘milk’ into Gha

Thousands of euros in Irish public money are being spent on pushing cheap substitute ‘milk’ into Ghana and some key markets in West Africa, anti-PR organisation DesMog and its Nigerian counterparts have disclosed.

In July this year, DesMog reported that some products made from milk with the natural fat removed and replaced with vegetable oil were among those promoted in trade missions and campaigns.

The study reveals that over €250,000 in Irish public funds have been used to help Irish dairy giants push fat-filled milk powder (FFMP) products in West Africa – a situation that is positively impacting Ireland’s booming FFMP industry.

DesMog explained that certain ‘milk powder’ brands have been advertising to Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal parents, claiming the products are good for their children.

The investigations also exposed exposed how large volumes of the cheap substitute ‘milk’ being exported to West Africa markets are outcompeting local milk on price.

Fat-filled milk powder is made by spray-drying skimmed milk combined with vegetable fats like palm or coconut oil because its dairy fats were removed to make more profitable products like butter.

It cannot be sold in the EU as milk because of the palm or vegetable oil addition – with the vast majority shipped outside Europe.

While countries like the Netherlands, Germany, France and Poland also export FFMP, Ireland is by far the biggest player – exporting 30 percent of the EU’s FFMP.

Indeed, Lakeland Dairies, Tirlán and Ornua, which had a combined turnover of €7.8billion in 2024, were the top exporters of FFMP to Nigeria and Ghana from 2021 to 2024 according to Volza export-import trade data.

Fat-filled milk powder is Ireland’s largest (by volume) dairy export and the fourth most valuable export – worth €813million last year.

But its success, DesMog noted, continues to come at a health cost for consumers in West Africa… including Ghana.

Ireland’s food and drink authority, Bord Bia, helped promote the products in these countries with an over-€170,000 taxpayer-funded 2023 trade mission and €82,500 on joint campaigns with Ornua for World Milk Day from 2021 to 2024.

Fat-filled milk powder contains up to 37 percent lactose and intolerance to it can cause bloating, diarrhea and stomach cramps.

Market research commissioned by Bord Bia, according to DesMoG, showed that most consumers are unaware of the differences between whole milk powder and FFMP.

Cheaper than fresh milk, FFMP has a longer shelf-life and is marketed as a ‘good’ source of protein. It is used as a milk substitute, tea and coffee ‘creamer’ and a base for yoghurts, drinks and desserts.

However, DesMog says perceptions of the products as healthy and sustainable are carefully crafted in West Africa, where consumers are targetted through social media, billboards, TV and in-person campaigns.

Hundreds of Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok post analyses, from 2022 to 2024, found brands frequently make claims about the health benefits and environmental impacts of these ‘milk powder’ products.
