Do not be ‘swallowed by football pressure’- Ben Nunoo Mensah warns next Sports Minister

0

Ghana Olympic Committee President Ben Nunoo Mensah has warned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against overwhelming focus on football.

Football, predominantly the Black Stars, is believed to have much attention of the government.

other sporting disciplines had shared their frustrations over lack of support ahead of major tournaments.

Mensah is calling for equitable share of the national cake.

“This has been a persistent challenge for successive governments. We’re in a country where many people equate sports solely with football, and I don’t blame them because that’s all they see and hear in the news,” he stated in an interview on the JoySports Link on JoyFM.

“Funding for the Ministry of Youth and Sports has always been inadequate. A team like the Black Stars virtually consumes the majority of the ministry’s budget.

“The pressure and demands of the moment often compel them to focus primarily on football. This is something the NDC should actively guard against.”

President John Mahama is expected to announce the new Sports Minister in the coming days.

Gospel musician Diana Hamilton shared a touching memory and offered her condolences during the funeral of Evangelist Agnes Aba Annan, the mother of renowned gospel singer and television host Empress Gifty Adorye.

In an interview with GhanaWeb on January 18, 2025, Diana Hamilton recalled a fond memory of Evangelist Agnes Aba Annan, where she humorously asked her daughter to spell “entrepreneur.”

“I think she was talking to her daughter, and she was asked to spell entrepreneur, and it’s just the way she pronounced entrepreneur, and she spelt it completely wrong, but it was just so funny,” she said.

Hamilton reflected on the Twi, saying, “Nnipa y3 d3 nanso y3nwe ne nam,” stating, “You can tell that great relationship was built between a mother and a daughter. And this has seen a daughter see her mother off well and beautifully.”

Hamilton expressed her condolences and prayed for the Lord to provide comfort, peace, and purpose to Empress Gifty Adorye in her time of grief.

“My condolences to her. I pray that the Lord will hold her, will give her a message even through this, and grant her purpose in life. May she be consoled and have peace of mind,” she added.

The funeral of Evangelist Agnes Aba Annan was a celebration of life marked by the unity and support of family and friends. Various individuals from all walks of life showed up to pay their last respects to the late musician.

Kofi Bentil proposes 3 key steps to curb ECOWAS membership exits

0

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has outlined three radical steps aimed at revitalizing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

His proposal comes at a time when the regional bloc is facing challenges with member countries contemplating or initiating exits, highlighting a perceived decline in ECOWAS’s effectiveness.

In a Facebook post shared on Saturday, January 18, 2025, Kofi Bentil suggested the removal of all borders within the ECOWAS region. He argues that this would facilitate the free movement of goods, services, and people, thereby boosting intra-regional trade and cultural exchange.

“The criminals don’t observe any rules anyway,” Bentil stated, suggesting that open borders would not exacerbate crime but rather diminish the power of illicit activities by eliminating the mechanisms through which they thrive, such as border bribery.

His second proposition involves the abolition of all visa and residence requirements for ECOWAS citizens. Bentil believes that this would encourage mobility and integration among the member states, fostering a sense of unity and shared identity. “Take away their power! Open the borders!!!” he exclaimed.

He emphasized the potential for such policies to empower the common citizen while stripping away the advantages currently exploited by corrupt officials and criminals.

Lastly, Kofi Bentil is advocating for the creation of a joint defense and naval force. This, he notes, would not only protect the common maritime boundaries but also address internal security issues like insurgency.

“Fight internal insurgents,” Bentil suggested, highlighting the need for a unified approach to security that could stabilize the region and make it less appealing for factions to destabilize individual countries.

Critics have pointed out the continuous decline of ECOWAS’ power and the ability of the bloc to promote democratic governance.

The recent overthrow of governments and the decision by some member states to desert the bloc have also led to a rising concern over the future of ECOWAS.

The post has sparked a variety of reactions across social media platforms, with some praising the boldness of the ideas while others express concerns over practical implementation and the potential for unintended consequences. Critics argue that while the vision of an open, borderless ECOWAS is appealing, the practicalities of managing such a policy could lead to economic disparities and security challenges if not carefully managed.

Week 17 Match Preview – Nsoatreman FC vs. Karela United

The hosts will be keen to bank all three points as they find themselves in a precarious position The hosts will be keen to bank all three points as they find themselves in a precarious position

Nsoatreman FC returns to league play at the Nana Kromansah II Park on Sunday, January 19, 2025, against visiting Karela United.

The hosts will be keen to bank all three points as they find themselves in a precarious position on the league standings.

Nsoatreman are winless in their last nine league matches and are just a point above Karela, who sit in the relegation zone.

Throw in their FA Cup defeat to Young Apostles, and that makes it ten games without a win. Pressure continues to mount on head coach Yaw Preko, and he will want his team to crank it up at home on Sunday.

The visitors are in danger after recording just one win in their last nine matches.

Karela have recorded three top-flight wins this term, but two of those victories came on the road.

The Pride and Passion will also be bent on returning to winning ways to get out of the mire.

Withdraw alleged letter revoking my appointment

0

Former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Prof. Ken Attafuah, has requested Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, to formally retract a letter allegedly revoking his appointment.

The letter, which surfaced on social media on Thursday, January 16, 2025, claimed to revoke Prof. Attafuah’s appointment as Executive Secretary of the NIA with immediate effect. It further instructed him to hand over his responsibilities to Mr. Wisdom Yayra Deku, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the NIA.

In a Facebook post on January 18, Prof. Attafuah clarified that he retired from the Public Service of Ghana on November 13, 2024, concluding his tenure as Executive Secretary of the NIA.

“My exit from NIA followed the expiration of my post-retirement contract after my 65th birthday on 9th November 2024.

“In the circumstances, the withdrawal of the impugned letter will help redress the awkwardness and embarrassment it has caused me personally and also address any apparent slighting of the lawful appointment of Mr. Mahama Sualihu as Ag. Executive Secretary since 14th November.”

He stated that he had handed over his duties to Mr. Mahama Suleman Sualihu, Director of Internal Audit at the NIA, and had also submitted his handing-over notes to the transition team.

“I handed over the duties of my office to Mr. Mahama Suleman Sualihu, Director of Internal Audit at NIA, who has been acting as the Executive Secretary since 14th November 2024 (following a resolution of the NIA Governing Board).

“I duly submitted my Handing Over Notes to the Transition Team on time (and have handed over all properties belonging to NIA in my custody.”

He urged the public to disregard any claims to the contrary, emphasizing that Dr. Callistus Mahama had assured him of retracting the alleged letter.

Read below the Facebook post by Prof Ken Attafuah

Quick one… is this truly from you, Sir?:

A few moments ago, I engaged with Dr. Calistus Mahama, Secretary to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, on a letter widely circulated on social media since Thursday, 16th January 2025 purporting to revoke my appointment as Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority with immediate effect.

The said letter, reproduced below, also directed me to hand over the duties of my office to Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, who has been appointed by President Mahama as the Acting Executive Secretary of NIA.

My engagement with Dr. Calistus Mahama today followed an earlier one yesterday during which I pointed out the following incontrovertible facts to him and, and based on those facts, respectfully requested him to formally withraw the letter of revocation of appointment:

1. I retired from the Public Service of Ghana as Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA) on 13th November 2024;

2. My exit from NIA followed the expiration of my post-retirement contract after my 65th birthday on 9th November 2024;

3. I handed over the duties of my office to Mr. Mahama Suleman Sualihu, Director of Internal Audit at NIA, who has been acting as the Executive Secretary since 14th November 2024 (following a resolution of the NIA Governing Board); and

4. I duly submitted my Handing Over Notes to the Transition Team on time (and have handed over all properties belonging to NIA in my custody.

The above facts might have been inadvertently missed in the preparation and issuance of the said letter. In the circumstances, the withdrawal of the impugned letter will help redress the awkwardness and embarrassment it has caused me personally, and also address any apparent slighting of the lawful appointment of Mr. Mahama Sualihu as Ag. Executive Secretary since 14th November.

At the end of our cordial WhatsApp chat yesterday, Dr. Calistus Mahama asked me to “rest assured” that he had “requested that the letter be withdrawn since [I am] no longer with the NIA”.

I understand that someone from Jubilee House went to NIA yesterday mid-afternoon and simply collected, rather than officially, withdraw the letter.

This evening, I conveyed to Dr. Calistus my earnest conviction that only an explicit written withdrawal of the impugned letter will kill the mischief on both sides of the political divide. He has assured me he will work on it on Monday when he gets to the office.

In short, I’m happily retired and not serving as Executive Secretary of NIA. Any suggestion to the contrary is false and should be disregarded.

Tsito SECTECH headmaster, staff interdicted over Free SHS tomato diversion

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted Rev. Joy Kafui Akpebu, the headmaster of Tsito Secondary Technical School in the Volta Region, along with two other staff members.

According to a statement by GES, their interdiction follows allegations of diverting over 100 cartons of tinned tomatoes meant for preparing meals for students of the school.

“Rev. Joy Kafui Akpebu, Headmaster of Tsito Senior High Technical School, Sylvanus Awunyo, Storekeeper, and Samuel Kwame Ampeh, Driver, have been interdicted pending an investigation into the alleged diversion of 100 cartons of tinned tomatoes intended for student meals in the Volta Region. This decision is in accordance with Section 8, Clauses (i-v) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Code of Conduct, which authorizes the interdiction of staff who may interfere with an ongoing investigation,” GES posted on its Facebook page on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

The decision by GES comes after a citizen vigilante, Apostle Frank Gogo Ekatso, effected a citizen’s arrest of a taxi driver and reported his suspicious activity to the police in Ho.

Apostle Ekatso, in a viral video, was seen confronting the driver of an Opel Astra taxi with registration number GR 5051 U while the driver was in the process of attempting to load several cartons of tinned tomatoes into his car boot at a hideout on the Sokode-Akrofu road in the Ho Municipality.

In his commentary in the viral video, Apostle Ekatso explained that he had seen items being transferred from a bus belonging to Tsito Secondary Technical School earlier.

The tinned tomatoes were said to have been part of food supplies collected from the Mawuli Senior High School food supply center, which serves several schools in the municipality.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the taxi driver, who has since been handed over to the police, is still in custody and assisting with the police investigation into the matter.

Samartex boasts an impressive record against the Phobians Samartex boasts an impressive record against the Phobians

FC Samartex 1996 bounced back from recent frustrations with a crucial victory over Aduana Stars FC last week, ending a five-game winless streak.

As they prepare to host giants Hearts of Oak at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Sunday afternoon, the defending champions are eager to secure their first back-to-back league wins of the season.

Samartex boasts an impressive record against the Phobians, remaining unbeaten in four games since their promotion to the top flight.

New coach Christopher Ennin will take charge of his first game, with a win over Hearts being a perfect start to his tenure.

On the other hand, Hearts are riding a wave of positivity after recording three consecutive victories since their defeat to their bitter rivals Asante Kotoko SC in the Ghana Premier League.

The Phobians are determined to maintain this momentum and aim to end the first half of the campaign on a high note.

A win could potentially see them claim the top spot.

Entering Sunday’s game, Hearts come off an impressive comeback win against Accra Lions FC in their last league match.

Aboubakar Ouattara’s side has lost just one of their last seven away games, a record that bolsters their confidence to achieve their first-ever league victory over Samartex.

The stage is set for an exciting clash as Samartex seeks to maintain their stronghold over Hearts while the Phobians aim to continue their winning streak and climb to the top of the league standings.

Prof. Azar proposes accountability initiative to monitor government appointees

0

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, a fellow of public law and justice at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD), has proposed an initiative to track and assess the performance of government ministers.

According to Prof. Asare, his initiative, dubbed Operation Monitor All Ministers’ Performance & Accountability Mechanism (OMAMPAM), will help set clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the ministers and track their performance to determine their suitability for their roles.

“Those who are performing will become very clear, and those who are not performing will also become very clear. Then the signal will be sent to the president that if a minister hasn’t delivered within the set period, it may be time to bring someone else to do the job,” he stated during an appearance as a guest on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, January 19, 2025.

He explained that OMAMPAM will be a citizen-led performance-tracking system to monitor the effectiveness of not only ministers but also heads of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The initiative aims to introduce data-driven governance, transparency, and accountability into the public sector.

Under OMAMPAM, ministers will be assigned KPIs upon appointment, which will be publicly announced. A dedicated mobile application will provide real-time tracking of ministers’ performance, enabling citizens to actively monitor and engage in governance by assessing whether ministers meet their targets.

For instance, the Minister of Agriculture could be tasked with increasing food production by 10% within a year, while the Minister of Education may be assigned a literacy rate improvement target.

The initiative is expected to bring several benefits to Ghana’s governance system, including:

  • Promoting accountability: Making ministers directly responsible for their performance and allowing underperformers to be replaced.
  • Enhancing transparency: Public tracking will reduce corruption and inefficiency.
  • Encouraging citizen participation: Ghanaians will have a role in evaluating ministers’ performance.
  • Reducing political patronage: Appointments and retention will be based on competence rather than political connections.
  • Fostering performance-oriented governance: Ministers will focus on tangible results rather than political theatrics.

AMA introduces easy rate payment system via short codes

0

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has introduced a new digital payment platform to collect business operating permits and property rates via the shortcodes 22233# and 22255#, respectively.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy by the AMA to streamline revenue collection, improve data accuracy, and enhance service delivery for citizens and stakeholders.

Mr. Nobel Atsu Ahadzie, the Director of Budget at AMA, introduced the platform during a Rate Payers’ Training programme organised for stakeholders at the Ablekuma South Sub-Metropolitan Council.

The training aims to bring stakeholders up to speed with accessing and using the system to enable ratepayers to make payments directly using their mobile phones, with the added convenience of downloading receipts and certificates online.

He described the platform as user-friendly and accessible, even to individuals with basic mobile phones.

Mr. Ahadzie said AMA plans to provide guidance and support for those who may require assistance, ensuring inclusivity in its implementation.

He pointed out that the new system supports payments for property rates, market tolls, parking tolls, and commercial signage, adding that users could check their bills via SMS, a dedicated customer portal, or USSD, while payments could be made through mobile money, bank cards, or banks.

Ahadzie addressed concerns about potential job losses, reassuring stakeholders that revenue collectors would be reassigned to roles in enforcement and customer education, stressing that these workers would assist businesses in adopting the system while ensuring compliance.

He said the platform would also help eliminate middlemen, reducing opportunities for corruption while enhancing accountability through real-time tracking of payments.

He noted that the success of a pilot project in the Ashiedu Keteke sub-metro had necessitated the expansion of the initiative to Ablekuma South and Okaikwei South to ensure that all three sub-metros benefit from digitalisation.

Mr. Richard Tagoe, the Assembly Member for the Korle Bu Electoral Area and Acting Chairman of the Ablekuma South sub-metro, expressed support for the newly introduced digital revenue collection platform in an interview with the media, saying it was a long-overdue initiative.

He lauded the concept, stating that it would help the AMA secure its revenue and eliminate leakages caused by corruption.

“This concept is very good and should have been implemented a long time ago, which could have prevented revenue collected from ending up in individuals’ pockets,” he said.

Mr. Tagoe urged the AMA to ensure strict enforcement of laws and regulations under the new platform, stressing that enforcement was key to maintaining discipline and compliance among ratepayers.

The committee, which includes Dr. Randy Abbey, Stephen Appiah, Moses Armah, Samuel Aboabire and Richard Nsenkyire, will oversee the Black Stars’ administrative and logistical functions.

“We are excited to announce the formation of this new Management Committee, which brings together a team of experienced and dedicated individuals who are passionate about Ghana football,” Mr. Okraku said.

“We are confident that they will work tirelessly to support the Black Stars and ensure their success,” he added.

Dr. Randy Abbey, an Executive Council member of the GFA, will chair the committee and lead engagements with the government and other key stakeholders. Stephen Appiah, the former Black Stars captain, will serve as Vice-Chairman, focusing on player relations.

Samuel Aboabire, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association and a GFA Executive Council member, and Moses Armah, President of Medeama Sporting Club, will handle operations and matchday activities, ensuring that sponsors, partners, and collaborators’ interests are well managed.

Richard Nsenkyire, President of FC Samartex 1996, the current Ghana Premier League champions, will be responsible for special duties.

This restructuring is part of efforts to enhance the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Following a disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign, the team is focused on improving its performance ahead of important matches against Chad and Madagascar scheduled for March.

Police arrest three people in connection with alleged smuggling of cocoa beans

0

The Police have arrested three suspects in connection with an alleged smuggling of about 1,473 maxi bags of cocoa beans to Togo and Burkina Faso.

The suspects made up of one of the drivers, and two driver-mates of the three heavy duty trucks which were carrying the bags of cocoa beans covered with lumber.

All three suspects had since been granted bail and are assisting the police in investigations.

Two other suspects (drivers) involved in the crime are on the run.

The Anti-Smuggling Task Force of the COCOBOD intercepted the trucks with registration numbers GR 7237-21, GR-314-24, and AS 5278-23 at Nkrankwanta in

the Dormaa West District of the Region.

Briefing the media in Sunyani, Mr Michael P.K. Asumanu, the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Administrator of the COCOBOD, said the task force comprised of the police, National Investigative Bureau, National Security and the COCOBOD.

He said the seized trucks had since been sent to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters in Sunyani for safe keeping, while the COCOBOD had taken custody of the cocoa beans since no one had claimed ownership of them.

Mr Asumanu said smuggling caused huge economic loss to the nation, because cocoa contributed hugely to the economy, and urged the public to support in the fight against smuggling of the beans, saying “we design rewards for informants.”

Mr Emmanuel Ntiako, the Acting Bono Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission later told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the commission was also assessing the lumber too.

Tema natives want an indigene to be nominated as MCE

0

President Mahama is in the process of appointing MMDCEs President Mahama is in the process of appointing MMDCEs

Two indigenous groups of Tema, Tema Obuade Wekunukpai (Tema Traditional Clan Heads) and the Tema Youth Association, have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to appoint natives of Tema as district heads of District Assemblies in the traditional area.

The groups, in separate letters to the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stated that an indigenous party member should be appointed for the position of metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executive officers on lands under the Tema paramountcy.

“An indigenous party member has a deeper understanding of our culture, traditions, challenges, and aspirations, thus making him/her better equipped to address these issues effectively,” the Tema Obuade Wekunukpai stated.

They noted that presently, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) was the only district among the lot where natives are recognised and given the position, and therefore appealed for the status quo to be maintained.

The Tema Youth Association stated in its letter that while Ashaiman is entirely Tema land, with Tema West having about 70 percent of the area under the Tema Traditional Council, and Kpone-Katamanso also having indigenous Tema communities such as Zenu, Kubekro, Sasaabi, and Adigon, the natives were often denied such appointments despite the sacrifice of their land, language, and identity for the good of the state.

They explained that “This request is rooted in the need for effective representation and understanding of the local context.

“An indigene of Tema would possess inherent knowledge of the community’s history, culture, and challenges, enabling them to make informed decisions that benefit the community. Furthermore, this would also promote a sense of ownership and accountability among the locals.”

Trimming the government machinery is only the first step – Mogtari

0

Special aide to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has applauded the government’s recent decision to trim the number of ministries from 30 to 23, describing it as a step in the right direction but emphasizing the need for tangible outcomes.

Speaking on TV3’s The Keypoints with Alfred Ocansey, Mogtari stated, “When you have very large and amorphous government machinery, it creates dissatisfaction. The citizens were expecting this reduction, and it aligns with their aspirations.”

She highlighted that while the move signals a commitment to efficiency, it must translate into real results.

“The reduction in the number of ministers is a great first step, but it cannot end there. There must be clear indicators showing how this improves efficiency and reduces waste,” she said.

Mogtari further called on civil society to play an active role in holding the government accountable. “Ghanaians are watching closely, and civil society will hold us accountable. The ORAL committee must serve as a watchdog, ensuring we deliver on our promises.”

Beyond the numbers, she stressed the importance of fostering a culture of service in leadership.

“This is not just about reducing numbers; it’s about fostering ethical leadership. People must know that they are coming into office to serve, not to enrich themselves,” Mogtari noted.

She concluded by pointing out the expectations of the Ghanaian people, emphasizing that they are quick to recognize hard work and genuine service.

“This reduction in ministerial appointments is a signal of our commitment to efficient governance, but it must be followed by results,” she remarked.

Kofi Adoma’s shooting incident took place in December – Sources

Ghanaian radio presenter Kofi Adoma Nwanwani Ghanaian radio presenter Kofi Adoma Nwanwani

Sources have disclosed to Mynewsgh.com that the shooting incident involving Ghanaian radio presenter Kofi Adoma Nwanwani occurred on December 21, 2024.

The incident occurred during the 25th-anniversary celebrations of Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II.

According to the insider, the unfortunate event happened inside the Abranpredease, Dormaahene’s Palace, where customary rituals were being performed.

The carbide cannon in the form of bamboo that injured Kofi Adoma was placed on the shoulder of the person handling it, and what struck the presenter’s face was a white substance locally known as “cannon.”

The palace authorities acted swiftly, ensuring Kofi was transported to Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital for immediate medical attention.

He was later transferred to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital for further treatment.

Contradictions in Accounts

The source also addressed claims made by Kofi Adoma’s wife, Miracle Adoma, regarding a lack of outreach from the Dormaa Palace.

Contrary to her statement that no one from Dormaa had checked on the journalist, the source revealed that a delegation attempted to visit Kofi Adoma on two occasions but could not access him.

The Palace, according to Mynewsgh.com sources, is set to issue a release regarding the incident in the coming days.

Background

Kofi Adoma’s wife, Miracle Adoma, who also serves as the Benkum Hemaa of Gomoa Amforo, recently spoke about the incident to clarify misinformation. In a video shared on her Facebook page on January 18 2025, she addressed speculations that her husband had been injured by gunpowder.

“We all know that before someone shoots a gun during a festival, the person shoots to the skies, but this time around, the person who pulled the trigger didn’t shoot into the sky. He placed the gun on his shoulder and pulled the trigger. So, the person shot my husband in the face, and it wasn’t just gunpowder. Even the camera he was working with fell,” she explained.

She recounted that Kofi was bleeding profusely after the incident and credited a young lady at the scene for helping him receive urgent medical attention.

Miracle Adoma also praised the doctors in Dormaa and Berekum for their efforts to save her husband’s eyesight.

The police have arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged smuggling of quantities of cocoa beans to the neighbouring countries of either Togo or Burkina Faso, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has confirmed.

The suspects include one of the drivers and two driver-mates of the three heavy-duty trucks, which were carrying the 1,473 maxi bags of cocoa beans covered with lumber. The suspects have since been granted bail and are assisting in police investigations.

Two other suspects (drivers) involved in the crime are on the run.

The Anti-Smuggling Task Force of the COCOBOD intercepted the trucks with registration numbers GR 7237-21, GR-314-24, and AS 5278-23 at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of the region.

Briefing the media in Sunyani, Mr. Michael P.K. Asumanu, the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Administrator of the COCOBOD said the task force comprised the police, National Investigative Bureau, National Security, and the COCOBOD.

He said the seized trucks had since been sent to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters in Sunyani for safekeeping, while the COCOBOD had taken custody of the cocoa beans since no one had claimed ownership of them.

Mr. Asumanu said smuggling caused a huge economic loss to the nation because cocoa contributed significantly to the economy and urged the public to support the fight against the smuggling of the beans, saying, “We design rewards for informants.”

Mr. Emmanuel Ntiako, the Acting Bono Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, later told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the commission was also assessing the lumber.

Nigeria is admitted as a partner country of the BRICS bloc

Nigeria becomes the ninth BRICS partner country Nigeria becomes the ninth BRICS partner country

Nigeria has been admitted as a “partner country” of the BRICS bloc of developing economies, according to Brazil, the group’s chair.

BRICS was formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2009, with South Africa added in 2010, as a counterweight to the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations.

Last year, the bloc added Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has been invited to join. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally applied to become members, and a few others have expressed interest.

Nigeria becomes the ninth BRICS partner country, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

“With the world’s sixth-largest population — and Africa’s largest — as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS,” Brazil’s government said in a statement Friday.

“It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance — issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency.”

President-elect Donald Trump last year threatened 100% tariffs against BRICS if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. The bloc’s leaders have voiced their commitment to introduce an alternative payment system that would not be dependent on the dollar.

Week 17 Match Preview – Basake Holy Stars vs. Aduana Stars

Holy Stars will look to return to winning ways after failing to win in their last two league matches Holy Stars will look to return to winning ways after failing to win in their last two league matches

Premier League debutants Basake Holy Stars will host Aduana Stars at the AAK II Sports Arena on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

Both teams are separated by four points on the league standings, with the ninth-placed hosts on 21 points while Aduana Stars sit in 12th position.

Holy Stars will look to return to winning ways after failing to win in their last two Premier League matches.

A win would inch them up on the league standings in their quest to retain their top-flight status.

Aduana Stars have still not fully overcome their struggles after recording just one win in their last six matches.

The Fire Boys have also lost just once in their last four matches, which is their only defeat since the arrival of new head coach, Cioba Aristica.

They fell to a narrow defeat at home to Samartex and will aim to bounce back with a win on the road.

Their last win was away to bottom-placed Legon Cities, but Holy Stars are a relatively formidable opponent.

The Dormaa-based side must deploy every weapon in their armory if they want to snatch a win, which could do a lot for their confidence.

Statue of ex-Ghana President Akufo-Addo destroyed

The statue of the former president was unveiled in November The statue of the former president was unveiled in November

A statue of Ghana’s immediate former President, Nana Akufo-Addo, put up at the end of last year has been destroyed.

The unveiling by Akufo-Addo of his own likeness in November in the country’s Western Region sparked a social media backlash, as well as being mocked and described as “self-glorification”.

Its launch had been in honour of the president’s development initiatives.

On Monday, local media shared images showing the statue in a ruined state, with its severed head lying on the ground. It is not clear who had targeted the sculpture or what the motive was.

The torso also appears to have been destroyed, and only a damaged pedestal remains in place.

Akufo-Addo stepped down as president last week after serving two terms in power. His party’s candidate to replace him was heavily defeated in December’s presidential election.

The statue had already been partially vandalised last month with one leg being damaged.

Some local residents had earlier been calling for the sculpture to be removed, but the local authorities had pledged at time of the initial damage to have it repaired.

Its destruction has elicited mixed reactions, with some condemning it while others saying there could have been a better way to deal with it.

One resident told local Citi FM outlet that it was “of no benefit” to the people, “so if it’s destroyed, its normal”.

Another said this was unfortunate and there should have been a “proper, civil way to get it removed” adding that that the action would have negative consequences for supporters of the former president’s party.

Joy FM quoted another resident saying he was happy it had been destroyed.

Last year, critics questioned the use of public funds for its construction especially at a time the country was facing economic hardship.

Ghana has in recent years been experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation and last year received a $3bn (£2.5bn) bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The cost-of-living crisis was a key campaign issue in last month’s election.

President John Mahama, who won the vote in a landslide, has in the past criticised the erection of the statue.

He said it was up to the people to honour the former president for his achievements, describing the statue as insensitive given the hardships being faced by the people.

LESSONS FROM GHANA – THISDAYLIVE

Nigeria needs structured and ideologically driven political parties for sustainable development, contends ABIODUN KOMOLAFE

Nigeria’s self-proclaimed status as the ‘Giant of Africa’ is being questioned once again, and a recent example from Ghana highlights this reality. The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana conceded defeat even before the polls closed, showcasing a level of democratic maturity. This incident serves as a reminderthat Nigeria’s claim to being a giant may not be entirely justified, considering factors beyond mere size or population.

To begin with, a lot of what happened in Ghana was a stark and painful reminder that Nigeria is not a competitive political economy. The sooner we face this reality, the better! Ghana’s ruling party, the NPP, was ready to concede defeat, even before the polls closed, because its own exit polls had shown that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) was already having a massive, irreversible lead in the voting.

The key issue is that you must have a competitive economy to even measure the temperature of exit polls. A country must have data to have exit polls. So, which exit polls do we have in Nigeria and why do we not have exit polls? The modern economy is data-driven, and it is clear that Nigeria’s economy is not data-driven. This is the key fault-line that must be urgently rectified in order to build a proper economy with the condition of today’s world.

Fundamentally, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) was transparently independent of the ruling party. This reality was accepted as an incontestable fact by both the political and the civil society organizations. The EC Head, like Caesar’s wife, was above board. Even in the parliamentary constituencies, nobody is talking about ‘going to court’. It is ironic that the Head of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was in Ghana and one hopes that he’d publish the full report of his assessment of the electoral process, including the collation and transmission of results.

Just as the EC demonstrated its independence, elections also serve as crucial indicators of a nation’s economic stability. An election is not just about the rights of voters in a democracy, it is also a signal to credit analysts as well as potential investors about the fundamental structure, orientation and competitiveness of a nation’s economy. Very importantly, it is about the stability of its institutions. In every electoral cycle, a country sends out signals about its economic stability in the short-, medium-, and long-term. Elections are actually very key economic indicators.

Ghana is different from Nigeria because its two major political parties – the NDC and the NPP – are institutional memories of Ghana’s political history, going back to the days of the Gold Coast before the country was renamed as Ghana. The two political parties represent the split in 1949 from the original nationalist movement. The NDC represents the ideological fervor of the younger elements such as Archie Casely-Hayford, Kwameh Nkrumah and others, who left to form the more progressive-oriented Convention People’s Party (CPP). The NPP represents the more conservative elements such as J.B. Danquah, Joe Appiah and others, who stayed with the conservative tendency. This ideological divide, in one shape or another, has dominated and continues to be the central thrust of Ghana’s politics from 1949 till today. This is why we do not have people decamping from party to party.

In eight years in the opposition party, we did not hear of any notable, even inconsequential decampees from the NDC to the ruling NPP. You can place a safe bet that nobody is going to decamp from the NPP to the now-ruling NDC in the next four years. This is because, unlike in Nigeria, the ideological basis upon which politics is anchored is very well-structured and institutionalized. We may care to ask ourselves: ‘What institutional memories and values, shaped by over 80 years of history, do Nigeria’s major political parties – APC, PDP, Labour Party, and others – truly represent? Yes, there’s poverty in Ghana, but this has not led to people jumping from party to party, looking for something to eat!

A closer look at Mexico’s political landscape is instructive. The country’s political parties, like the Institutional Revolutionary Party (Partido Revolucionario Institucional, PRI), and the National Action Party (PartidoAcción Nacional, PAN), are more than just parties – they’re movements with deep roots. If a local councilor defects, it’s front-page news. These parties even have their own banks, offering loans to members. In Nigeria, where is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Bank and where is the All Progressives Congress (APC) Hospital? This disparity highlights Nigeria’s struggles with building robust, ideologically-driven political parties.

Similarly, in Nigeria, the absence of robust research departments in political parties hinders their ability to drive effective governance. A proper political party must have a Research Department. It is the fruit of research over the years that leads to effective governance. When they were in opposition in Brazil, the Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT) simulated the building of affordable housing on a mass scale for low income people to purchase on a monthly rent-to-home basis. By the time they came into office, they had worked out cost-effective, mass housing construction solutions, based on local materials.

In eight years in office, they built 1,000,000 affordable housing units per year and, in the process pulled millions of people out of poverty, created generational wealth and built enduring social capital. To be honest, the Lagos Executive Development Board (LEDB) in the 1950s, and Lateef Jakande in the early 1980s, were also on this trajectory. Unfortunately, no political party since then has imbibed the institutional memory to build upon them.

What Ghana, Mexico, South Africa and Brazil, even India have shown is that Nigeria needs solidly-structured, ideologically-cohesive and data-driven political parties to have real, sustainable development as opposed to booty-sharing which inevitably leads to unsustainable cost of governance. We had better consider the consequences of a country spending more on debt servicing than investments in education and health, and how this affects sustainable development. This is bizarre! It defies commonsense and it’s not aligned to any known model of economic development!

The success of the transfer of power in Ghana should be for us in Nigeria an opportunity for introspection and sober reflection. It should also be a wake-up call to reboot our political process in order to regain international competitiveness. International competitiveness is now make-or-break, with Trump 2.0 manifesting itself on January 20! This should be taken as a warning! The problem with our political leaders in Nigeria is that they don’t invest in the institutions or people, but in themselves. Of course, that’s why they don’t quit, resign or retire but, like water, at the mercy of temperature, they move from one state of coldness to another of hotness. They undergo constant transformation, yet remain inherently unchanged.

Like a butterfly flitting from flower to flower in search of nectar, these leaders move from one position of power to another, leaving behind a trail of fake promises and superficial solutions. This self-serving approach is rooted in a deeper societal issue – a culture of entitlement and lack of accountability – which perpetuates the suffering of a people whose promise has been aborted, at the hands of “hypocritical praise singers and men with hardened hearts and closed ears” who “believe in nothing but their own voices of lies.”

This self-serving approach has far-reaching consequences, as evident in the 2023 presidential election, where the IReV Portal lost its authentic ring. Who knows what aspect of our fragile democratic processes will “succumb to the tempting froth from the cup of politics” in 2027?

Cardi B

American rapper, Cardi B, has claimed that men prefer dating less attractive women because they are more submissive compared to women considered “perfect 10s.”

She made the statement during a recent live stream on social media, saying, “Men prefer less attractive women because they are more submissive than perfect 10s.”

Cardi B later explained the comment on X, stating that the livestream discussed how men are often intimidated by women who are financially independent and harder to control.

She mentioned a man had told her he prefers dating women who are “6s” rather than “10s.”

This comes after Cardi B’s recent divorce from her husband, rapper Offset, amid allegations of infidelity.

Nunez double seals win for Liverpool against Brentford

0

Substitute Darwin Nunez scored a late double to guide Liverpool to victory at Brentford and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League.

It looked as though Liverpool’s wait for a league win in 2025 was going to stretch to three games until Nunez stepped up in stoppage time.

The Uruguay forward grabbed the opener in the 91st minute with a simple finish from close range after meeting a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And Nunez scored again two minutes later, showing patience in a crowded area to round off a counter-attack as Brentford were caught short in defence.

Despite taking so long to break the deadlock, Liverpool had dominated possession and territory for large periods and were fully deserving of all three points.

Dominik Szoboszlai saw an effort crash off the top of the crossbar in the first half and Luis Diaz should have made more of an attempt with his head after emerging unmarked at the far post.

Brentford were happy to sit deep and soak up pressure but struggled to pose any serious threat on the counter, with striker Bryan Mbeumo left isolated.

The Merseyside outfit maintained complete control of the tempo in the latter stages as Brentford dropped ever deeper, but lacked the potency in front of goal which they oozed in the first half of the season until Nunez delivered the decisive blows.

Liverpool sit six points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who drew 2-2 against Aston Villa later on Saturday, and they also have a game in hand.

Brentford stay 11th after a third loss in four home fixtures.

Tsito SECTECH headmaster, staff interdicted over alleged food diversion

0

The headmaster of Tsito Secondary Technical School in the Volta Region, Rev. Joy Kafui Akpebu, along with two other staff members, has been interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The other individuals are Sylvanus Awunyo, the school’s storekeeper, and Samuel Kwame Ampeh, the school’s driver.

Their interdiction follows allegations of diverting over 100 cartons of tinned tomatoes meant for preparing meals for students.

The incident came to light on Friday when a citizen vigilante, Apostle Frank Gogo Ekatso, alerted the police in Ho to suspicious activity. A taxi driver in an Opel Astra with registration number GR 5051 U was spotted attempting to load several cartons of tinned tomatoes into his car boot at a hideout on the Sokode-Akrofu road in the Ho Municipality.

According to the vigilante, the items had earlier been offloaded from a bus belonging to Tsito Secondary Technical School. Sources revealed that the tinned tomatoes were part of food supplies collected from the Mawuli Senior High School food supply centre, which serves several schools in the municipality.

The driver was promptly arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation.

The incident has sparked widespread public condemnation, with many attributing such actions to the persistent food shortages in schools across the country.

Police sources confirmed to 3news on Saturday evening that the suspect driver remains in custody as investigations continue.

GHALCA Election C’ttee clears candidate for chairmanship position

0

The Election Committee of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has cleared candidate, John Kofi Ansah, to contest for the presidency in the association’s upcoming elections, slated for Tuesday at the GHALCA Secretariat at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This follows a petition against his candidature, referencing Articles 9 (1) (b) and 9 (1) (h) of the GHALCA Constitution, which mandate members to ‘uphold a high moral standard and not engage in any conduct that would bring the Association into public ridicule.’

The EC was petitioned to disqualify Mr Ansah, citing him in an alleged match ticket racketeering in 1996 and also match manipulation in 2016.

The committee, however, ruled that the petition lacked sufficient evidence to substantiate any conviction of the respondent.

“The candidate provided the committee with a police clearance report dated December 30, 2024 and a court ruling as evidence of his acquittal and discharge by an Accra Circuit Court; thus the candidate, Mr John Kofi Ansah, is cleared to contest the election.”

This decision allows Mr Ansah to stand for the chairmanship position, where he will come up against former vice president of the association, Isaac Wilberforce Koomson.

The committee also revealed that it has partially upheld a petition against Mr Gabriel Godwin Kwao, candidate for the position of Regional League Representative, for non-compliance with both nomination and endorsement requirements.

Also, Phyllis Marku Moncar, a candidate for the position of vice chairman, was directed to rectify irregularities in her nomination, which must be completed by 5pm yesterday while Premier League representative aspirant, Abdul Rahman Yakubu, was yet to be vetted as of press time yesterday.

‘You can’t be president and watch me suffer’

0

Fuji music legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, shared a touching yet humorous exchange with President Bola Tinubu during a phone call on Saturday.

The President reached out to commiserate with the music icon over the loss of his beloved mother.

President Tinubu extended his condolences and prayed for the repose of K1’s mother’s soul, urging him to accept the loss as the will of God. The President, who has long shared a cordial relationship with the Fuji maestro, spoke with empathy and offered words of comfort.

“May her soul rest in perfect peace,” Tinubu said warmly. “I know how painful it is to lose a mother, but I pray that God grants you the fortitude to bear this loss. Take heart, Wasiu.

As the conversation unfolded, Tinubu, known for his witty sense of humour, lightened the mood with a jovial remark. “You will not suffer because you have lost your mother. God will protect you. Don’t forget you have me, your President.

The comment drew laughter from K1, who reciprocated with his own dose of humour and gratitude.

“Akanbi, you are the President of Nigeria. I can’t ever suffer because my mother is gone. I am your son, and you are my father. It’s your duty to take care of me!” he replied, his voice brimming with playful affection.

“As long as you are President, I cannot suffer. Nigeria cannot suffer,” he declared, adding, “With you in charge, there is hope for all of us.”

Their light-hearted banter continued as K1 jokingly threatened to hold Tinubu accountable if he ever found himself in distress. “You can’t be President and watch me suffer, o. It’s not possible! You’re my backbone now,” he quipped, prompting another burst of laughter on both ends.

The call, which could have been a somber moment, was infused with warmth and camaraderie, reflecting the strong bond between the two figures. K1, who has always been vocal about his admiration for Tinubu, used the opportunity to reaffirm his support for the President’s vision for Nigeria.

“Baba, with you as President, we are on the path to greatness. My mother may be gone, but I am at peace knowing Nigeria is in your hands,” K1 said with conviction.

K1’s response was both heartfelt and humorous: “If I ever feel like suffering, I’ll just remind you of this call! Thank you, Mr. President.”

Court of Appeal overturns conviction of Lomobiawe clan leaders, restores justice in chieftaincy dispute

0

The Court of Appeal in Accra, presided over by Justice Anthony Oppong, has overturned the conviction of Numo Moses Tettey-Gah, Numo Hunu Bafloe, Nene Tettey Limo III, and Gbordzor Abayateye, members of the Oger-We wing of the Lomobiawe clan of Ada.

The court found that the initial conviction by the Tema High Court was erroneous, leading to a miscarriage of justice. Consequently, the appeal court set aside the fines imposed on them and acquitted them of all contempt charges.

The case stemmed from a long-standing dispute over the installation of a Wetsoyi (Clan Head) for the Lomobiawe clan, which arose following the death of Nene Limo III in 2015.

The conflict escalated after David Domaley Akporyor claimed the title of Wetsoyi, despite his installation being endorsed by only one of the eight Gates of the Lomobiawe clan. The remaining seven Gates opposed his claim.

Addressing the press in Ada, the head of Abaya We of the Lomobiawe Clan, Numo Gbodzor Abayateye, explained the genesis of the legal battle.

According to him, the Lomobiawe clan has a long-established custom requiring all eight Gates to approve the installation of a Wetsoyi. Despite this, Domaley proceeded with his installation, prompting opposition from key stakeholders.

In response to the challenge, Domaley filed a contempt case in the Tema High Court against the four accused leaders, resulting in their conviction and a fine of GH₵2,500.00 each.

They were also prohibited from referring to themselves as kingmakers or participating in the installation of a clan head. The accused leaders paid the fines but filed an appeal in 2019, contesting the lower court’s decision.

After a thorough review, the Court of Appeal ruled in their favor, declaring the contempt charges baseless and stating that the fines paid should be refunded. The court affirmed that the Oger-We section of the Lomobiawe clan holds legitimate rights to the Wetsoyi stool and dismissed claims to the contrary.

“This judgment restores justice and affirms our role as kingmakers within the Lomobiawe clan,” Nene Tekpetey Dadah Tettey-Ga V stated during the press conference.

“We have gathered here today to inform the public that the charges against us have been overturned, and we have been vindicated.”

He emphasized that the decision underscores the importance of adhering to traditional customs and processes in the selection of a clan head.

The judgment also highlights the commitment of the judiciary to ensuring justice in matters involving traditional leadership.

The Chief of Ada-Foah and head of the Tettey-Ga family, Nene Tekpetey Dadah Tettey-Ga V, emphasized the need for unity and peaceful resolution of disputes within the Ada State, particularly among traditional councils and families.

He reaffirmed his rightful position as a member of the Lomobiawe Council and called for dialogue and adherence to traditional protocols to address ongoing conflicts.

According to the Chief, his installation followed the customary procedures of the Ada State, which include endorsement by the Dadah family, the Tettey-Ga Council, the Lomobiawe Council, and ultimately the Ada Traditional Council and the Paramount Chief of Ada.

Nene Tekpetey Dadah Tettey-Ga V, who is also a member of the Lomobiawe Divisional Council, emphasized that his presence at the press conference was a rightful duty as a member of the Lomobiawe Council.

Nene Tettey-Ga V expressed concerns over disputes between the Dugbartey and Dadah Gates, which he described as threatening the unity and progress of the Ada community.

He called on all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue, fairness, and respect for established chieftaincy succession protocols to resolve conflicts peacefully.

“Chieftaincy is a respected pillar of our society, representing our heritage, unity, and leadership,” he stated. “Unfortunately, disputes between the Dugbartey and Dadah Gates jeopardize this unity.

These conflicts, if left unresolved, breed division, hinder community development, and stall progress.”

He urged the seven Gates of Ada-Foah, Traditional Councils, and state institutions to engage in mediation efforts that honor historical precedents while fostering peace and cohesion.

“Our collective focus should be on promoting unity, development, and peaceful coexistence,” he added. “I call upon everyone in Ada-Foah and the Ada State to support efforts for peace and to avoid actions or statements that could escalate tensions.”

Nene Tettey-Ga V also acknowledged the critical role of the media in promoting dialogue and supporting the Lomobiawe Clan in their efforts to resolve disputes.

He encouraged community members to take responsibility for resolving family and clan disputes internally to foster an environment conducive to development.

“Let us collaborate to uphold the dignity of the chieftaincy institution and maintain harmony in the Ada Traditional Area,” he concluded.

The chief’s call for unity and peaceful resolution highlights the importance of preserving the chieftaincy institution and working collectively to ensure the growth and development of the Ada State.

It also served as a platform to clarify the facts of the case and reinforce the legitimacy of the Lomobiawe clan’s customary practices. The leaders expressed gratitude to their supporters and urged the public to disregard any misinformation regarding their roles or rights within the Ada Traditional Area.

Speaking about the incident, Nakuwu opened up about the scale of his loss. He noted that he harvested about 1,400 tubers of yam and 5,000 yam sets, which he planned to use for farming this year, but everything was destroyed by the fire.

The unexpected fire consumed the fruits of his labour, leaving him unable to repay the loan he had taken to finance the farming venture.

For Nakuwu, the tragedy has come as a major setback, not just financially but also emotionally. As the sole breadwinner for his family of seven, the destruction has left his household in a precarious position.

Diplomatic passport recall right direction in managing the system – Former Buem MP

0

Former Member of Parliament for Buem, Daniel Asiamah Former Member of Parliament for Buem, Daniel Asiamah

The presidency’s decision to recall all diplomatic and service passports is a step in the right direction, former Member of Parliament for Buem, Daniel Asiamah, has observed.

He said it was important for the new administration to get a grip on the situation before any re-issuance could be done.

On Wednesday, President John Dramani Mahama’s office directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to recall previously issued diplomatic and service passports during the erstwhile administration.

The directive, the presidency noted, was to ensure that such passports are appropriately used in a manner befitting due standards.

Commenting on the development during the Weekly Review segment on Starr FM, Mr Asiamah said the president’s decision was justified.

“It is right to manage the system. It is right for the president today to know who is holding the diplomatic passport and going out there to represent in the name of Ghana. So this one is just an administrative process that I think is okay,” he said.

He added that he hoped to be considered when the diplomatic passports are reissued shortly.

GPL 2024/25: Basake Holy Stars target fourth win in six games against Aduana

0

Basake Holy Stars will seek to record their sixth home win of the season when they come up against Aduana FC in Ghana Premier League.

The two teams come up against each other in the last game of the first round of the Ghanaian top flight on Sunday, January 19.

Holy Stars have picked up five wins at home from eight games following their promotion to the league at the start of the 2024/25 season.

A win against Aduana will give them 20 points at home having also drawn two and lost once during that period.

Aduana have averaged one point per game on their away trips this campaign after picking up eight points from eight games.

The Dormaa-based side have struggled in their recent games in the league winning just one of their last six while Holy Stars have recorded three wins in their last five games.

Depending on the result from the game between Samartex and Hearts of Oak, Holy Stars could move into eight position on the Premier League table.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the Premier League after Holy Stars recently gained promotion.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 15:00 GMT.

Joseph Boahen Aidoo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has tendered his resignation, effective January 7, 2025, following a directive issued earlier this month regarding the dissolution of all boards of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

In a formal letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Aidoo expressed his gratitude to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, and Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve in the prestigious role for the past eight years.

Mr. Aidoo’s tenure at COCOBOD was initially set to end in July 2025, but he has chosen to step down early to facilitate a smooth transition and allow for the timely appointment of his successor.

“I remain committed to the advancement of Ghana’s cocoa sector and stand ready to support any transition processes that may be required,” Mr. Aidoo wrote in his resignation letter.

He also conveyed his pride in contributing to the growth of the country’s cocoa industry, noting that the experience had been both rewarding and enlightening.

This resignation comes in the wake of broader changes in the structure of state-owned enterprises in the country.

Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority

Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, the former National Identification Authority (NIA) executive secretary, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to withdraw a letter terminating his appointment.

According to Prof. Attafuah, he officially retired from public service in November 2024, and the letter revoking his appointment is both inaccurate and unnecessary.

In a Facebook post dated Saturday, January 18, 2025, Prof. Attafuah disclosed that he had engaged in discussions with Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, regarding the widely circulated termination letter.

He stated that the letter, issued on January 16, directed him to hand over his duties to Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, the newly appointed Acting Executive Secretary of the NIA.

Prof. Attafuah clarified that he had already handed over to Mahama Suleman Sualihu in November 2024 following his retirement.

“The said letter, reproduced below, also directed me to hand over the duties of my office to Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku. My engagement with Dr. Callistus Mahama today followed an earlier one yesterday during which I pointed out the following incontrovertible facts to him,” Dr. Attafuah wrote.

He outlined that his post-retirement contract had ended on November 13 2024, and that he had duly submitted his handing-over notes to the Transition Team. He said Mahama Sualihu had been acting as Executive Secretary since his departure.

Prof. Attafuah further revealed that Dr. Callistus Mahama had assured him that the termination letter would be formally withdrawn, stating, “He has assured me he will work on it on Monday when he gets to the office.”

Prof. Attafuah reiterated that he is happily retired and not serving as the Executive Secretary of the NIA, calling on the public to disregard any suggestion to the contrary.

Arsenal blow two-goal lead against Aston Villa

0

Arsenal had a late goal disallowed as they dropped two points in the Premier League title race after throwing away a two-goal lead at home to Aston Villa.

Kai Havertz thought he had found the winner with a minute left in normal time but the goal was disallowed after replays showed he handled Mikel Merino’s shot.

The hosts had claimed a two-goal lead, with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring after taking advantage of some slack defending from Villa left-back Ian Maatsen to bundle home Leandro Trossard’s cross.

The Belgian turned provider again for Arsenal’s second, as Havertz netted his 13th goal of the season from the former Brighton winger’s cross ten minutes after half-time.

But Villa staged a stunning comeback, halving the deficit through Youri Tielemans’ header from Matty Cash’s cross on the hour mark, and equalising eight minutes later with a volley by striker Ollie Watkins.

The result leaves Arsenal six points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, having played a game more than Arne Slot’s side.

Villa move into seventh, two points shy of fourth-placed Newcastle in the final Champions League slot.

William Saliba missed the draw in north London through injury and manager Mikel Arteta said he fears Arsenal could be without the France defender in the coming weeks.

“Tomorrow we will have more information, but am I worried? Yes, for sure,” said Arteta.

“Especially with the numbers that we have in the squad and looking at our bench.”

Delta Soars With Game-Changing Innovations At CES 2025

0

Delta ushered in its 100th anniversary with a larger-than-life presence at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Spearheaded by a first-of-its-kind keynote delivered by CEO Ed Bastian at Sphere, Delta’s appearance at the tech event commemorated a century of groundbreaking aviation milestones and the airline’s commitment to innovation, all powered by people.

“New marvels like AI, the digital revolution and sustainable technology are giving us incredible tools to transform the travel experience,” said Bastian during the keynote. “But amid the wonder of new technology, we’ve always understood that the entire point of innovation is to lift people up.”

From partnership announcements and visions of the future of travel to immersive experiences and a musical performance from multiple GRAMMY Award winning music icon Lenny Kravitz, relive all of Delta’s best moments from CES 2025.

As a buzz of excitement filled Sphere, Delta’s presence at CES was undeniable, drawing a crowd of thousands of attendees. The keynote began with a moving, in-person monologue by awarding-winning actress Viola Davis, whose poignant words set the tone for what was to come.

The audience was then taken on a fully immersive flight journey, with Bastian being joined on stage throughout the keynote by Delta people and industry leaders to showcase the new technology and partnerships that will be part of Delta’s next 100 years.

*Using Modern Technology To Drive Customer Experience*

For the second act of the keynote, Bastian was joined by Qualtrics Co-Founder & Chairman Ryan Smith and Delta flight attendant Jeanie Brady to discuss how customer feedback shapes the future of travel, teeing up the introduction of Delta Concierge.

Built into the Fly Delta app, Delta Concierge is a digital tool that uses generative AI to create seamless and personalized moments while making a customer’s journey easier – almost like a personal assistant.

*Creating New Modes Of Seamless Teavel*

Bastian also outlined a multi-modal future of travel—where a single customer itinerary will be connected from start to finish through deep partner integrations. Sharing the stage with Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, Bastian announced a new partnership with the transport company that will allow customers to link their Uber and SkyMiles accounts and earn miles for eligible rides and deliveries.

To further lean on the ecosystem of connected travel, Delta Concierge will also connect with Joby’s electric air taxi service that promises to transform the travel experience with home-to-airport transportation in the years ahead.

*Reimagining The Onboard Experience*

To enhance its world-class onboard experience, Delta is introducing a groundbreaking cloud-based in-flight entertainment system.

This new platform builds on the personalized Delta Sync experience that was launched in 2023 for SkyMiles Members, paving the way for expanded content offerings and collaborations with brands our customers know and love, like YouTube.

Alongside YouTube Chief Business Officer, Mary Ellen Coe, Bastian announced a new partnership with YouTube that will allow SkyMiles Members to enjoy their favorite creators, podcasts and music artists ad-free while onboard most flights with Delta Sync Wi-Fi and Delta Sync seatback as part of their in-flight entertainment.

*The Future Of Flying*

As Delta continues to expand as an international airline, it’s the company’s responsibility to continue increasing the world’s access to travel. That’s why Delta’s partnership with Airbus is so vital. Today, Delta operates more Airbus jets than any other airline in the world, so it was only fitting that for the final act of the keynote, Bastian was joined by Julie Kitcher, Chief Sustainability Officer and Communications at Airbus, for a fireside chat to discuss the steps the companies are taking together to build a better world for the next 100 years.

Introduced during the fireside chat, a new partnership with Airbus UpNext will position the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer and its largest operator at the forefront of advancing next generation aviation technologies to revolutionize the future of flying.

Bastian and Kitcher were also joined by WAYE Founder Sinead Bovell to imagine how the aviation industry and travel experience might evolve to be more sustainable and adapt to customer needs in the coming decades.

*The Attendee Experience*

Audience members at Sphere were in for a treat as multiple GRAMMY Award winning music icon Lenny Kravitz put on an exclusive performance after the commencement of the keynote.

But Delta’s presence at CES went far beyond the main stage, with the airline kicking things off at 6 a.m. on Jan. 7 in the grandest way imaginable: transforming Sphere’s exterior – the Exosphere – into 360-degree, vibrant worlds representing the many destinations the airline connects its customers to. At night, Delta’s activation shifted to feature five planes representing the evolution of aviation over Delta’s 100-year history.

In Sphere’s Atrium, CES ticket holders were able to explore an interactive, pre-show exhibit prior to the keynote, all designed to celebrate Delta’s 100-year history.

*Delta Through the Years*
Inspiring Delta employee stories and company artifacts showcased the history of aviation.

*Virtual Pilot Training Experience*
Attendees got a glimpse of what it’s like to fly at 30,000 feet, guided by Delta Pilots.

*Delta Locals*
Guests got to preview Delta Locals, a new travel planning platform from Delta that uses new platforms and emerging technology.

“Delta’s appearance at CES is a testament to the strength of our brand and the exciting future ahead,” said Chief Marketing Officer Alicia Tillman.

“This was an opportunity for attendees to experience who we are in a new and unforgettable way. As we look toward the next century, we’re committed to creating more moments that inspire and allow us to enrich our customer connections while continuing to spotlight and celebrate our incredible Delta people.”

The Endless Struggles of Ghanaian Businesses (Part 1)

0

*The role of the people in economic growth*

No nation achieves economic development while sidelining its own people. For sustained growth to be achieved, citizens must always be at the forefront of economic activities happening within their country.

Sadly, there seems to be this long-standing, endemic failure by us to accept this fact. And the failure to acknowledge this truth has left many a Ghanaian and African nation struggling economically.

Consider the world’s leading industries, such as mining, telecommunications, construction, manufacturing, etc. What do we see prevailing in the Ghanaian ecosystem? Regrettably, these sectors are often dominated by foreign entities, while Ghanaians are relegated to the margins, competing for very limited opportunities in our very own home.

This disparity is not coincidental; it reflects a broader pattern of economic empowerment in one nation versus marginalisation in another. The American system is very aptly built with the American business in mind. The system is built to see, not only to the success of American businesses, but their lasting success. Sadly, the same cannot be said of our country, Ghana.

The Ghanaian business has the misfortune of always being on tenuous grounds. It is very difficult for a Ghanaian to build and sustain a business in their very own country. And this cuts across all sectors and classes of businesses.

The Ghanaian businessman and woman’s woes starts from the poor capital market, to the drowning tax regime, to the comparatively limited market, to the bias of ‘inferiority’ they suffer in these markets (their own home markets), to the unfair competition from foreign counterparts.

Their foreign counterparts, on the other hand, have the benefit of their home countries providing them access to affordable capital, enabling tax regimes in their home countries (and oftentimes the host countries also), they have access to a wider market, and the benefit of favourable perceptions strategically sowed in the minds of people worldwide of their products and services… All these factors enable them to offer competitive pricing, hence completely obliterating their Ghanaian competitors out of their own home market.

Yet each time one sees fellow Ghanaian businesses—after years of toiling behind the curtains—finally getting their moment in the sun, finally succeeding, against all odds, one cannot help but still harbour some level of fear for their impending orchestrated downfall.

Let’s take the case of Springfield Ghana, for example, and the strategic targeting they have received from ACEP Ghana in the past years over the ENI case.

*Springfield v. Eni & Vitol*

By the year 2017, Eni (along with its partners Vitol and GNPC) had started production in the nation’s Sankofa field. Springfield, on the other hand, acquired interest to prospect and operate the Afina field. By 2018, Springfield had completed a 3D seismic data valuation of the field and had found oil in commercial quantities. It was also found that the Afina field was connected to Eni’s Sankofa field. Hence, following an assessment by the GNPC, the Ministry in 2020 issued a directive under requiring a unitisation of Eni’s Sankofa field with Springfield’s Afina. Eni refused to comply—even after a second directive issued by the Ministry. They insisted that the two fields were not connected; and that Springfield’s finding at Afina wasn’t even in commercial quantities; hence a unitisation directive was unreasonable.

All these claims were dismissed by the nation’s courts, and Eni ordered to perform its part under said directive.

So, what is this whole tussle with ACEP? Well, ACEP has been very vocal throughout this whole brouhaha—mostly in favour of the foreign entities (Eni and Vitol).

Recently, a report by a news website, ‘Norvan Reports’ quoted the Executive Director of ACEP to have accused Springfield of issuing an inaccurate appraisal report—a report of which formed the basis for the so-called ‘unjust’ directive of unitisation as issued by the Ministry.

During the latter part of October this year, Springfield’s CEO, Kevin Okyere issued a rebuttal, and required Ben Boakye to apologise for this false statement, noting that following due process, Springfield, having undertaken an ‘appraisal programme’, was yet to submit an ‘appraisal report’. Hence, couldn’t possibly be said to have submitted a report when the said report wasn’t even done yet. ACEP responded, noting that a mistake had been committed on the part of the news website, Norvan Report, and that what his organisation had meant was an ‘appraisal programme’ not an ‘appraisal report.

All this back and forth has, of course, an obvious underlying issue—for the Ghanaian to contend with. And it is whether the Ministry of Energy, in so issuing a directive that the two fields of the two companies Eni and Springfield be unitised, did so unjustly. Of course, the courts have ruled that this directive of the Ministry was in the right direction. But you have individuals and an entity like ACEP which still maintains that this ruling wasn’t in the right direction.

And this brings me to the second issue—this time around, a latent yet prominent issue. And it is the fact that, through one’s readings of the official communiques issued by ACEP on this matter, one finds as a central theme: the streamlining and amping of our markets—of our laws, enforcement mechanisms, our scientific processes, etc., towards the creation of a fertile soil for… FOREIGN INVESTMENTS—foreign companies!

On the face of it, this does not sound too far-fetched, does it? Of course, every country must have so good a business climate that it not only attracts foreign investments, but also helps maintain these investments—and curb investor flight. Even far-advanced economies like the USA have this as a top priority.

But the problem with this same position religiously taken by ACEP is that ACEP gives no cognisance to this even more important economic imperative—i.e., the creation of conducive environments for the flourishing and sustenance of local businesses.

This is an even much bigger national objective! All nations of the world—all level-headed, forward-thinking nations of the world—have as their topmost priority, the building of local capacity.

At all times, citizens and local businesses must be given the needed boost to render them, not only incredibly competitive in their own home markets, but in international markets also. Foreign direct investments (FDIs) are merely additional ingredients needed in the nation building process—they are not meant to replace the former.

But hearing the crust of ACEP’s argument since this whole matter commenced, one cannot help but be sad at the sheer amount of pro-foreign-business attitude on wild display, masked by concerns of reducing the ‘nation’s investor confidence’. Take this paragraph out of its June 2021 communique for example:
“The negative press associated with these issues has the potential to undermine the progress made over the years to encourage investments into Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector. This is further worsened by the current global context of the energy transition, which is engineering a significant shift from fossil fuel investment to low carbon energy sources. The positive response of major oil producers and investors to the transition is promoting alternative energy sources that are significantly suppressing the demand growth for fossil fuels.

A scan of the strategy of major oil producers shows a clear transition path to becoming energy companies through extensive Research and Development (R&D). The shift is shrinking the available capital for investments in new exploration activities in the oil industry and generating extreme competition for limited exploration funds. Attracting investment, therefore, requires a positive, assuring and less risky political environment.”

Again, on the face of it, this seems like a normal thing the average person could piece together. But this thinking right here, is what separates great nations apart from floundering ones.

I must tell you, I looked at this paragraph with bewilderment. It was the very first argument ACEP chose to make in this communique of theirs.

I was shocked at its almost colonial blatantness because, on the issue of the global energy transition movement—a movement which is resulting and is projected to further result in a global shift of investments from the fossil fuel industries across the world—ACEP takes the view that what this shift will result in is reduced investments in Ghana’s fossil fuel industry in the near future, hence, the government of Ghana must be careful not to quicken this process—must do all it can to coax these foreign companies—to, if you will, have mercy upon us, and keep considering us for their investments.
I repeat, this sentiment right here is what separates floundering nations like ours from great ones like the USA. Because do you know what a great country’s response to this threat of energy transition and consequent investments shift would be? It sure won’t be to first-and-foremost figure out a way to make external forces (foreign investors) happy—so as to have mercy on them.

Rather, the topmost priority of great nations always is: how do we empower local ownership and production? How do we empower our local businesses to take on this challenge—so that we are not at the beck and call of outsiders (foreign investors)? How do we ensure that we are able to much more effectively orchestrate our national journey?

Sadly, this is not what ACEP advises that the government of Ghana does.
At no point in their many communiques is the local business ever treated as a central character—the main or even a prominent economic tool to lead the socioeconomic advancement of the nation.

Throughout it all, the sentiment of ACEP is: foreign businesses first. And this is a sentiment that many Ghanaians, sadly, tend to share—often subconsciously.

Extend operations of ORAL outside Accra – Coalition tells gov’t

A group calling itself the Coalition of Volta Youth Against the Sale of Government Lands has appealed to President John Mahama to extend the operations of ‘Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL)’ to other parts of the country.

They indicated that this would contribute effectively to retrieving state assets, especially lands bought at “chicken change” by former government appointees and NPP executives across the country.

The Coalition alleged that almost all government lands in the Kabore enclave of Ho have been sold to people connected to the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government.

These individuals which included government appointees and executives of the opposition New Patriotic Party have begun developing most of the lands.

The Convener of the Coalition, Dr Stanley Glatey lamented the rate at which state lands were sold by the Lands Commission to cronies of the former government.

“They have sold the land as if they are sharing ‘Kelewele’ and there is nothing left to talk about. Today, if the government wants to put up a structure, I tell you there is no land for us to put up any of these structures”, he said.

He raised concerns about the negligence of security protocols when lands in the proximity of the official residence of the Regional Minister have been sold to individuals.

He entreated the ORAL team to bring to book Land Commission officials who participated in the illegal sales of the lands.

Dr Glatey assured of their cooperation to help the ORAL team with detailed information on the inappropriate and illegal sale of government lands in Ho and other parts of the Volta Region, and ensure all state asserts sold under dubious means are retrieved.

“We are determined to support the ORAL team. We are creating the awareness that they come down to us and when they come, all the necessary support they need, we will give them to ensure that the lands that belong to the state, the lands that belong to all of us, the lands that belong to the Ho Municipality and the government at large is protected if not for today’s use, for future use”, he said.

Dr Glatey also asked for an extensive investigation into the development of state land at Godokpui, a suburb of Ho, where ten units of detached 2-bedroom bungalows are being constructed.
