Entertainment expert and staunch NDC member, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, widely known as Bullgod, has once again professed his admiration for President John Dramani Mahama.

In a video posted on Instagram on January 7, 2025, Bullgod was seen praying for Mahama to succeed as he has been sworn into office to steer the affairs of the nation.

He asked God to empower Mahama to accomplish his task, as he reiterated that the country has been left in shambles by the New Patriotic Party.

“May God bless him and grant him strength, and transform him into someone from whom everyone can benefit. We are praying for him; although these people have damaged many things, we hope that God will empower him to accomplish his work,” the entertainment expert stated.

He said he remains optimistic that President Mahama will bring about improvements amid the existing difficulties.

Ghana witnessed the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama at the Independence Square in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

The event was attended by 21 heads of state, foreign dignitaries, and thousands of citizens, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s democratic journey.

‘How did NPP get the gusto to say they were going to win the election’? – Kwesi Pratt Jnr quizzes

A veteran journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has raised concerns about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) public statements regarding their chances of winning the 2024 presidential election, despite internal surveys showing a different picture.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Pratt brought to attention an interview that took place months before the election, pointing out the NPP’s awareness of their electoral defeat.

“You (Randy Abbey) had a discussion with a very prominent person on the Bawumia campaign who actually admitted that about 10 months before the elections they knew that they were going to lose. Yes! And that their study had showed that their votes were appreciating.

“If they knew they were trailing, how did they get the gusto, you know, to be looking us in the face and to be telling us that we’re going to win, some claiming that by landslide and so on, when they knew that we’re trailing,” he said.

Kwesi Pratt went on to question the party’s confidence in claiming victory, pointing out the inconsistency between their internal data and public claims.

“My point is simply this, if they knew they were trailing, why did they get the gusto to be looking us in the face and telling us they were going to win, claiming that by landslide and so on. They knew they were trailing,” he indicated.

President John Dramani Mahama defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with 6,328,397 votes, which represented 56.55% of the valid votes, while Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Ghana faces $89.90 million fuel bill to avert power crisis amid gas pipeline maintenance

There are claims that a dumsor crisis looms There are claims that a dumsor crisis looms

The Ghanaian government will require $89.90 million to procure liquid fuel to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply as the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) halts natural gas delivery for maintenance.

WAGP, which supplies natural gas to Ghana, is scheduled to undergo a major maintenance operation, known as pigging, leaving the country without gas for nearly a month.

This critical maintenance, initially planned for October 2024, was postponed to January 2025 by the previous government, creating an urgent need for alternative power generation measures.

In a statement issued by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the national power transmission company warned of severe power outages—commonly referred to as Dumsor—if liquid fuel is not procured to operate thermal plants during the maintenance period.

“There is a deficit in generation capacity during the period of the WAPCO pigging exercise.

Therefore, it is necessary to procure liquid fuel to operate thermal plants in Tema to meet demand,” GRIDCo stated.

The maintenance work on the gas pipeline, which transports natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana, is vital for ensuring the long-term reliability of the gas supply.

However, it poses an immediate challenge for power producers in Ghana, who rely heavily on natural gas for electricity generation.

GRIDCo emphasized that the procurement of $89.90 million worth of liquid fuel is critical to bridging the gap in power generation and avoiding disruptions to the country’s energy supply.

Mohammed Kudus to have a new coach as West Ham sacks Julen Lopetegui

Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus is set to work under a new manager following West Ham’s announcement of Julen Lopetegui’s sacking after just seven months in charge.

The Spaniard had been preparing the team for their FA Cup third-round tie against Aston Villa on January 10. However, the club’s board decided to end his tenure, bringing his time at the club to a close.

Lopetegui was relieved of his duties after a meeting with club chairman David Sullivan on Monday. This decision follows West Ham’s poor form, which has left them in 14th place in the Premier League table, compounded by a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.

For Kudus, this marks the second managerial change he has experienced since joining West Ham in 2023. With negotiations ongoing with ex Chelsea boss Graham Potter to become the Hammers’ new boss, Potter would become Kudus’ third coach at the club in just two seasons.

Under David Moyes, Kudus enjoyed a stellar debut season, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. However, he has struggled to replicate that form during the 2024/25 season under Lopetegui, managing only three goals and three assists in 15 Premier League appearances.

Lopetegui’s tenure saw West Ham play 20 Premier League matches, of which they won six, drew five, and lost nine. He leaves the Hammers in 14th place with 23 points in the league standings.

‘We Disagree with the President’s Decision”

0

Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Kwaku Azar, has expressed dissatisfaction with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s dismissal of his petition to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as reported by Ghana Web on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

In a Facebook post on January 6, 2024, Kwaku Azar criticized the president’s rejection of his petition, describing the decision as a “prima facie determination” based on initial impressions.

He disagreed with the ruling, stating, “We disagree with the president’s prima facie determination on our petition and will take additional steps for it to get a fair hearing.”

The petition, which was submitted by Azar, accused Chief Justice Torkornoo of misbehaviour and incompetence. However, in a statement issued by the presidency on the same day, Akufo-Addo, after consulting with the Council of State, rejected the petition.

The president concluded that the petition did not present a prima facie case justifying further action.

The statement emphasized that the allegations, which included claims of panel reconstitution, issuing practice directions, and constitutional breaches, lacked supporting evidence.

The president’s office noted that Azar had failed to provide credible documentation or factual evidence to substantiate his claims. Additionally, it affirmed that the practices cited were consistent with established law.

Kwaku Azar, however, remained resolute in his stance, asserting in a follow-up post, “Whatever is dismissed today will resonate tomorrow, standing as a testament to the enduring pursuit of justice.”

This statement indicates his intention to continue pushing for what he sees as a fair evaluation of his petition.

Dumsor: $90m needed to avert looming power crisis

0

The government urgently needs nearly $90 million to avert a looming power crisis caused by insufficient fuel supplies for thermal plants, according to a report by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

The GRIDCo report outlines that the funds are required to procure liquid fuel, such as light crude oil, to operate thermal plants in Tema and meet growing electricity demand.

The crisis stems from a generation capacity deficit following a pigging exercise conducted by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO), which temporarily disrupted natural gas supply.

The GRIDCo report details key strategies to mitigate the impact of the fuel shortage and maintain grid stability:

  1. Rescheduling Planned Maintenance: Revising the schedules for generator shutdowns to avoid overlaps with the WAPCO maintenance period.
  2. Securing Alternative Fuels: Procuring sufficient quantities of light crude oil or other liquid fuels to substitute natural gas for thermal power generation.
  3. Load Management Measures: Considering load-shedding as a last resort to stabilize the national grid in the event of severe power shortages.

The GRIDCo also announced the maintenance of gas pipelines from Nigeria to Ghana by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAGP) which was initially scheduled for October 2024 but was postponed by the previous government to January 2025.

“There is a deficit in generation capacity during the period of the WAPCO pigging exercise. Therefore, it is necessary to procure liquid fuel to operate thermal plants in Tema to meet demand. To prevent the looming ‘dumsor’, GRIDCo highlighted that the government will need “a total of US$ 89.90 million to purchase liquid fuel for running thermal plants and meet demand during the maintenance period.”

The report warns that failure to act swiftly could lead to prolonged power outages, disrupting economic activities and public services.

Stakeholders have called for expedited government action to secure funding and implement the recommended measures to avert the crisis.

Free SHS: Let your children come to school with gari, shito, others

0

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has encouraged parents to provide their children with enough provisions for school.

According to the conference, this is to help with the feeding challenges in SHSs.

CHASS had requested the Ministry of Education to promptly disburse pending funds for the uninterrupted functioning of SHSs across the country, warning that unresolved financial shortfalls could disrupt academic activities and compromise student welfare.

A communiqué signed by CHASS National Secretary, Primus Baro, highlighted the financial challenges faced by schools, which persist despite previous communications and verbal assurances from the Minister of Education during a Zoom meeting on December 18, 2024, and appealed for an extension of the January 3, 2025 reopening date.

However, the Ghana Education Service (GES) later announced that it was in discussions with the Ministry of Education to expedite the resolution of issues brought forth by the leadership of CHASS and insisted that students were expected to report back to school on January 3, 2025.

Primus Baro, National Secretary of CHASS, told JoyNews in an interview on Wednesday, January 8, that the situation had heightened and the help of parents was needed.

He stressed that food supplies were not reaching the schools and in some cases, they were relying on the old practice of sending students what they had.

“I encourage parents, and I have already advised my PTA to this effect, to let their children bring food like gari, shito, and sugar to supplement whatever the school provides. I urge parents across the country, as the food situation has still not improved in the past two and three years, and it has worsened at this particular time.

“Food supplies are not reaching the schools. In places like the Upper West, Upper East, and Northern regions, apart from rice, the schools have no stable food supplies. Oil is completely unavailable. For example, in my school, I currently don’t have a single drop of oil, so my matron has been using margarine to replace oil for cooking. I don’t have maize or beans—only rice and some gari.

“We are still relying on the old practices of sending students with what they have, and that’s the only reason we allowed the students to return. Otherwise, the situation is still far from ideal,” Baro stated.

Koku Anyidoho ‘cries’ after plaque of Prof Mills’ statue bearing his name is ‘vandalised’

A former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has taken to social media to express his frustration over the vandalism of a statue of the late former President Prof John Evans Atta Mills at the former president’s resting place, the Asomdwee Park.

Visuals from the Asomdwee Park show the plaque of the statue, which named Koku Anyidoho as the person who donated the statue, removed.

The writings on the plaque before it was destroyed showed details of the late former president and the inscription “Donated by Samuel Koku Anyidoho”.

The plaque could be seen broken into pieces with the statue of the late Prof Mills, however, intact.

It is not clear who removed the plaque, but the Asomdwee Park is state property, intended to be the resting place of the country’s presidents who pass on.

Koku Anyidoho, in the post he shared on X on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, took solace in God over the destruction of the plaque.

“This just happened @ Asomdwe Park. My Bible tells me that ‘In All Things’ (not in some things), I should give thanks to God. I am also singing… ‘It is well with my soul’. To God be All the glory and my prayer is for God to continue blessing my beloved Homeland Ghana,” he wrote.

Updates: Ablekuma North collation of results

0

Accra, Jan 8, GNA – Agents of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ablekuma North Constituency have insisted on a re-run of the parliamentary election in the constituency, rejecting any other resolution.

Their demand follows continued expression of discontent over the validity of some of the Statements of Results (pink sheets) being used in the collation of results for the December 7 parliamentary elections.

Mr Vincent Obeng, the Returning Officer overruled the NDC’s objection, insisting that he would admit the results because they were valid.

The decision sparked a wild altercation at the collation centre.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Gladys Pinkrah, stated that the decision to call for a re-run of the parliamentary election rests with the Commission, not its officials.

Meanwhile, Mr. Evans Nimako, Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the EC to ensure the re-collation exercise is concluded.

Meet the fashion designer behind President Mahama’s inauguration outfit

0

Matthew Agambire, the designer behind President John Mahama’s ‘agbada’ which he wore to his Inauguration on January 7, 2025, has revealed the President was involved in the creative process.

In an interview on JoyNews, Matthew who owns the Bondaana fashion brand disclosed the inspiration behind the design.

“President Mahama is someone who believes so much in Ghana and he wanted something of Ghana, from Ghana and by Ghana. When I approached him about designing the outfit, I gave him a few ideas as to what I wanted to do. And in fact, he is actually a very key person in co-creating the brand. So he said he would need something that represents Ghana and he needed a Ghanaian to do it. So that was actually the brain behind the outfit,” he said.

Asked whose decision it was to incorporate the Adinkra symbols into the design, Matthew said “I had been planning and thinking on what to do on his outfit for the past two months. So what happened behind the scenes was that I would usually come up with something and go show it to him, and then he either approves or gives his contributions. So the Adinkra symbols were originally thought by me and shown to him for his approval. So it was teamwork between the two of us.”

About President Mahama’s inauguration ‘agbada’

On January 7, 2025, the man who secured a decisive victory in Ghana’s 2024 election made an equally commanding statement as he arrived at the Black Star Square for his inauguration.

President John Mahama, 66, took the Oath of Office and raised the glittering State Sword, a powerful symbol of authority, to a thunderous applause from the jubilant crowd.

However, it wasn’t just the ceremonial sword that captured the attention of Ghanaians at the venue and online on the sunny mid-morning.

He wore a white ‘Agbada,’ an outfit consisting of an inner garment of varying lengths and a pair of traditional trousers.

Mr Mahama’s unique twist featured two long kente embroideries flanking the three-piece attire.

The long kente design on the cloth matched the pattern of his hat.

The Kente design is named ‘Ɛmmerɛ Pa Da W’anim,’ which translates to Better Days Lie Ahead.

Noticeable at the centre of the attire were four Adinkra symbols.

They are, ‘Gye Nyame’, ‘Sankofa’, ‘Dwennimmen’ and ‘Nyame Dua’.

Dr. Tony Aidoo calls for a new beginning for Ghana upon Mahama’s swearing-in and criticizes Akufo-Addo’s diplomatic shortcomings.

Dr. Tony Aidoo, a former Senior Presidential Aid and Head of Policy and Evaluation under the late Prof. Mills, offered his comments on the inauguration of John Dramani Mahama as Ghana’s next president, calling it a momentous day for the country.

Dr. Tony Aidoo was upbeat about the occasion, highlighting the ceremony’s grandeur and the large number of dignitaries in attendance, even as he noted the difficulties the nation faces. This degree of foreign engagement, he said, suggests Ghana may make a comeback to the world diplomatic scene.

Nonetheless, Dr. Tony Aidoo did not hold back from critiquing the situation that the departing administration had left behind. He said that Ghana’s current state is similar to a “second independence with nothing to build upon,” and he blamed the previous government for sabotaging the country’s development and regional ties.

In particular, Dr. Tony Aidoo denounced the acts of former President Nana Akufo-Addo during his last days in power. Akufo-Addo cut diplomatic connections with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic just three days before his mandate expired, he noted.

Additionally, on a visit to the United States, Akufo-Addo accused Burkina Faso of hiding terrorists along Ghana’s border, a move that Dr. Tony Aidoo called foolish and detrimental to Ghana’s diplomatic credibility.

Such acts, he said, have left Ghana politically isolated and relations with important neighbors strained, and he questioned how a head of state could take them.

Dr. Tony Aidoo is optimistic that President Mahama’s administration can improve Ghana’s reputation both domestically and abroad in spite of these setbacks.

He was disappointed with President Mahama’s inaugural speech’s content, but he praised the remarkable occasion and its potential to improve Ghana’s international status.

According to Dr. Tony Aidoo, the speech did not address the urgent issues facing average Ghanaians and was unduly diplomatic. He chastised the President for failing to be honest about the actual situation in the country, especially the serious harm the previous administration had done to the economy.

“President Mahama failed to provide a clear picture of the dire situation on the ground, despite acknowledging that the government cannot succeed alone and needs the support of all Ghanaians,” Dr. Tony Aidoo said.

Using the example of how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by Nana Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had ruined the nation’s economic foundations, he contended that the President ought to have been forthright and honest. Dr. Tony Aidoo feels that Mahama lost a chance to unite Ghanaians around the truth, regardless of the diplomatic ramifications for other countries.

“The President ought to have stated it honestly,” Dr. Tony Aidoo argued. Whether it offends foreign sensibilities or not is irrelevant. He was purposefully set up for failure by the NPP government, and the people have a right to know the truth about their situation.

In order to restore confidence and togetherness among Ghanaians, Dr. Tony Aidoo emphasized that President Mahama must take a more direct approach to resolving national issues and that openness and honesty are essential.

Dr. Vladimir Danso justifies Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s presence at Mahama’s inauguration

0

International relations expert and security analyst, Dr. Vladmir Antwi Danso International relations expert and security analyst, Dr. Vladmir Antwi Danso

International relations expert and security analyst, Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso, has defended the invitation of Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Capt Ibrahim Traoré, to the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of President John Dramani Mahama.

In an interview with News Central on TV3 on January 8, 2025, Dr. Danso explained that the invitation was rooted in Ghana’s foreign policy principles, particularly good neighbourliness.

“No country has the right to dictate the governance or ideology. If we invite the Head of State of another country, it is because one of the core principles of our foreign policy is good neighbourliness,” he added.

Dr. Danso further questioned the validity of arguments against the invitation by comparing it to international relations with countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Iraq, which may not align with Western democratic ideals but still maintain diplomatic relations with the United States.

“Are we saying that Saudi Arabia, which is a theocracy, or Iran or Iraq or Syria – any of those Middle Eastern countries which are not democratic in the sense of the democracy, we know that we can’t invite them? Why would America have a link with Saudi Arabia, for example, if indeed or Bahrain or Kuwait, even though they don’t have the type of democracy that America has? So, for me the argument is not here nor there. We have every right to invite Burkina Faso’s head of state because it is the head of state of Burkina Faso, and he has the sovereign right to be here.

“So, the debate is not whether we are a democratic country we should invite, or we shouldn’t invite. We are inviting him as Head of State, respected by his own people. His own people have not chosen him the way we chose ours, but his own people have confidence in him and he’s the head of state of the country anyway, whether you like it or not,” he noted.

Dr. Danso clarified that Burkina Faso’s participation in the inauguration did not have significant implications for Ghana’s governance.

He maintained that sovereign countries should be respected, regardless of their political circumstances.

“Ghana does not clone ECOWAS. They will say once you have left ECOWAS, we don’t have to have any dealings with you. Absolutely not. It is their own country and what they do with their country is not our concern. What concerns us is that there should be peace, economic, trade, and bilateral or political relations with any country that is in the world. That’s one of the pillars of our foreign policy,” he added.

Dr. Danso also suggested that the presence of Burkina Faso’s leader at the event could serve as a catalyst for enhancing diplomatic discussions within the ECOWAS region.

“But for the ECOWAS sub region and the conversations to have these countries return, I believe this and his appearance with the ECOWAS chair, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, all present yesterday will be a booster of some sort,” he explained.

Some critics have raised concerns regarding a security lapse during the inauguration of the president, where Ibrahim Traoré, reportedly armed, was allowed to approach Mahama to congratulate him.

They have questioned the adequacy of security protocols during high-profile events and whether such lapses could have significant consequences.

Committee composition, formation take centre stage as 9th Parliament sits

0

Following their swearing-in and subsequent presidential inauguration, Members of the 9th Parliament of Ghana will, as part of business for today, Wednesday, January 8, 2025, determine the formation and composition of membership for committees, delegations, groups, and associations to manage the activities of the House.

As listed in the Order Paper for the day, leaders of the Majority and Minority caucuses will make statements before the deliberation on the committees commences.

Various motions regarding the selection and composition of the committees will substantially be moved.

The NDC gained an overwhelming majority of seats in the 2024 parliamentary election, securing 183 seats as against the 88 currently held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Independent members hold four other seats, while a single seat, the Ablekuma North seat, remains outstanding due to an ongoing dispute between the two leading political parties.

Give Randy Abbey a ministerial appointment

Dr. Randy Abbey is a sports administrator Dr. Randy Abbey is a sports administrator

A founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ato Ahwoi, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to appoint sports administrator and media personality, Dr. Randy Abbey, as part of his ministers.

According to him, the experience Dr. Abbey has garnered both in sports and in the media as the host of Good Morning Ghana would enable him to thrive if given the nod as a minister.

The former Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) believes Dr. Abbey will play a key role in government if given an appointment.

“I hope Randy will be considered by President Mahama to be a minister in his government, just like Akufo-Addo considered Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and gave him a ministerial position in his government.

“Randy will be a good minister. I hope he would learn to take the whip just like he was whipping all of us when we were in government. If he listens to my advice, he would go far,” he said during an interview with Metro TV.

Ahwoi further advised Dr. Abbey to be wary of women and desist from corrupt activities if he gets a ministerial appointment.

“Comport yourself very well like you’ve comported yourself all along. Don’t let money be your sole aim of being in government. Once you become a minister or whatever it is, there are a lot of traps that will be set for you.

“There are a lot of beautiful girls around. They will be throwing themselves at you. Just look at them and turn your eye to the other side,” he added.

This comes as Dr. Abbey is rumored to be appointed as the Minister of Sports.

Ghana’s Inflation surges to 23.8% in December

0

The Ghana Statistical Service has revealed that the government failed its end-of-year inflation target of 15%, with December inflation rising to 23.8%.

This represents a slight increase from the 23.0% recorded in November, marking the fourth consecutive month of rising inflation.

According to Government Statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the December inflation rate showed that prices for goods and services grew by 23.8% year on year between December 2023 and December 2024.

He also highlighted a huge 7.5 percentage point difference between food and non-food inflation.

“The rate of inflation… is the third highest in the last 13 months and highest in the last eight months,” Prof. Annim stated.

“We do emphasise that there are two perspectives in addressing inflation. One is the monetary side… and the other is the real side, with what we’ve seen with food inflation, more particularly the food that we consume, that are locally produced,” Prof. Annim noted.

He urged policymakers to focus on production, value chains, transportation, warehousing, and reducing post-harvest losses to stabilise food prices.

Report unlawful attack on state institutions to police

0

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore has called on party supporters to assist in identifying and apprehending individuals suspected of infiltrating government institutions under the guise of being party sympathisers.

He urged them to report any unlawful activities to the appropriate authorities.

This follows media reports alleging that some NDC supporters stormed the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) earlier on Wednesday morning.

Speaking to Citi News, Ashie Moore denied reports of similar incidents at Kotoka International Airport and revealed that he had met with the regional police commander to discuss measures for restoring law and order within 24 hours.

“Let me use this opportunity to encourage members of our party in this region to be vigilant. They should rather report such unlawful activities to me as the regional chairman or to the appropriate authorities including the regional police commander for the appropriate action to be taken”

“I have had a meeting with the regional police commander and his team, and we have all agreed that they are now going to make sure that they will protect state establishments and institutions. So I can promise you that within 24 hours, law and order will be established.”

By Kodjo Adams

Accra, Jan. 7, GNA- Mr Bernard Quintin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade, and the Federal Cultural Institution of Belgium, has hailed Ghana’s robust economic development agenda to create opportunities and enhance Intra-African and global trade.

He expressed satisfaction about Ghana’s cocoa, which was produced partly for the national market and for export.

“It is important to export in order to have forex to make your economy work and translate into a better social life,” he said at a press briefing in Accra.

Mr Quintin was directed by Ms Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, to represent the European Union (EU) at the inauguration ceremony of President-elect John Mahama on January 7, 2025.

The inauguration ceremony is a significant moment for Ghana, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history.

The high-level EU delegation has demonstrated commitment to Ghana as a partner on sustainable and inclusive development and regional security.

Mr Quintin was impressed by the number of more than 20 heads of state who were present at the inauguration ceremony.

Mr Quintin visit demonstrated the importance of the relations between Belgium, the European Union, and Ghana and the shared desire to strengthen the partnership in the political, economic, and human domains.

“It is so important to come for this ceremony because Ghana is a very important partner of Belgium and the European Union in Western Africa, not only in trade traditionally, but also in the security matters.

“The EU has become the first partner of Ghana on security matters,” he said.

As the EU’s representative, he reaffirmed the EU-Ghana partnership priorities on job creation, economic diversification, sustainability, regional security, and others.

He met with Ghanaian and African leaders to discuss key issues such as the security situation in the Sahel, the fight against jihadism, and economic development opportunities.

These matters, the Belgian Foreign Minister stressed, were of common concern and underlined the importance of effective collaboration between European and African partners.

He expressed happiness about the programme of President John Mahama and his new administration, particularly with the accountability and the fight against corruption.

“We do think that accountability is important, and we certainly support this new administration in this business-minded environment and all the important elements that were said in President Mahama’s inauguration speech,” he said.

President Mahama’s four key policy areas are economic restoration and stabilisation, improvement of the business and investment environment, governance and constitutional reforms and accountability and the fight against corruption.

Mr Quintin and his team had an audience and lunch with Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, met with Omar Touray, President of ECOWAS, and had bilateral meetings with regional leaders.

The team also visited Niche Cocoa, a Ghanaian company receiving Belgian funding via BIO-Invest.

The Belgian Foreign Minister was accompanied by Mr Irchad Razaaly, EU Ambassador to Ghana; Mrs Carole van Eyll, Ambassador of Belgium to Ghana; Mrs Sibille de Cartier d’Yves, Belgium Special Envoy for the Sahel and West Africa; and Mr Philip Haspeslagh, Adviser to the Belgian Foreign Minister.

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale (L) and Blakk Cedi (R) Dancehall musician Shatta Wale (L) and Blakk Cedi (R)

Ghanaian musician, Shatta Wale, has debunked rumours on social media that former artiste manager, Blakk Cedi, now leads his management team.

In a media interaction with Shatta Wale on January 8, 2024, Shatta Wale, who had just returned to the country after an intriguing performance in Jamaica, noted that Blakk Cedi was part of his managerial team solely for the project and nothing more to it.

“Blakk Cedi’s contribution to my performance is like every media house coming here to interview me. I don’t have any problem with anybody. Blakk Cedi is Stonebwoy’s former manager, and I don’t have any problem with him or Stonebwoy… The painting of Shatta Wale not being able to work with anybody is getting too much because I am making too much money that I can’t think about hating again.

“He has done well, and nobody should tag him that he (Blakk Cedi) is managing Shatta Wale because Sammy Flex is still my manager,” he said.

He also expressed profound gratitude to his fans for their support throughout his career.

“I am trying to create some business this year so I believe most of the fans are going to work with me. Also, I am going to give them some good music. Thanks to every Shatta fan who has been with me from day one. May God bless you and your family,” he added.

Blakk Cedi gratitude message to Shatta Wale

Blakk Cedi, on January 3, 2025, took to social media to express gratitude and admiration for Shatta Wale, pointing out his excellent work ethic and the respect, trust, and love he demonstrated throughout their collaboration.

“I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunity to serve as part of your team during the Freedom Street Concert in Jamaica. It was an honour to step in and contribute to your vision, and I do not take that privilege lightly,” he said.

He continued, “Your unwavering respect, trust, and love throughout this process truly humbled me. The warmth you extended made every step seamless, and it reinforced why you are so deeply admired by many.”

EC commences re-collection of Ablekuma North parliamentary results

0

L-R: Ewurabena Aubynn and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh are the lead contenders for the seat play videoL-R: Ewurabena Aubynn and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh are the lead contenders for the seat

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has commenced the re-collation of the 2024 parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

The Ablekuma North Constituency is the only constituency out of the 276 whose results are still outstanding.

The collation is going on at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the commission on January 8, 2024.

The EC, at its Greater Accra Regional office, on December 10, 2024, declared the candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Ewurabena Aubynn, as the winner, beating NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh, a former MP and the current Deputy Chief Executive of the Coastal Development Authority.

But the EC later nullified the declaration of Ewurabena Aubynn as Member of Parliament-Elect for the area, stating that the results for the constituency would be re-collated.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa, explained that NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn was declared the winner of the constituency’s seat without the results of 62 polling stations.

“In the Ablekuma North constituency, 219 polling station results were used to declare a winner instead of 281 polling station results. The Commission would not uphold that declaration,” she said at a press conference on Thursday.

The recollation follows a High Court ruling on Saturday, January 4, 2024, which granted an application by the NPP seeking to compel the EC to complete the collation of parliamentary results for the constituency.

Justice Forson Agyapong, who presided over the case, ruled in favor of the NPP, issuing an order of mandamus that compelled the EC to complete the collation process.

In his judgment, Justice Agyapong stated that the EC had failed to collate results from 31 outstanding polling stations in the constituency, which was a breach of its obligations.

The court subsequently ordered the EC to collate the results from the remaining polling stations and incorporate them into the already collated figures.

We are largely exposed to dumsor, start work now – IES to Mahama

Executive Director of IES, Nana Amoasi VII Executive Director of IES, Nana Amoasi VII

Following the disclosure by the Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu constituency, John Jinapor, that Ghana only has five hours’ worth of fuel stock for power generation, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) has weighed in on the controversy.

According to the Executive Director of IES, Nana Amoasi VII, a power crisis, popularly known as dumsor, is looming due to systemic inefficiencies and poor planning by the previous government.

He called on President John Dramani Mahama and his government to begin work on the energy sector as soon as possible to prevent power outages in the coming days.

He further stated that the country does not have any backup or sufficient stock of liquid fuel to address the situation.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Nana Amoasi VII said, “As observers of the space, we were well aware that we had a very fragile power sector due to systemic inefficiencies, including poor planning.”

“Unfortunately, we were expecting that as part of the transition arrangement, some form of procurement or lifting would have been done to ensure that there is no gap left within the space, but our checks indicate that we don’t have enough liquid fuel to provide us with the reliability and assurance that we won’t experience any disruptions in power supply,” he added.

“So, we appeal to those in charge today to get back to work and begin addressing the issue as soon as possible. Otherwise, we are at significant risk,” the Executive Director of IES stated.

He expressed disappointment that no procurement or lifting arrangements were made during the transition to ensure a smooth power supply.

NDC supporters allegedly lock offices of NIA, NADMO, and NSS

0

A group of young men, believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stormed the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, January 8, locking the offices of several government agencies, including the National Identification Authority, National Disaster Management Organisation, National Service Secretariat, and the National Health Insurance Authority.

The group later moved to the regional offices of these institutions, attempting similar actions. Although no violence was reported, staff members were left traumatized by the events.

Calm has since been restored, and staff have resumed their normal duties.

Stop the jealousy, I waited 20 years to perform with Vybz Kartel – Shatta Wale to Stonebwoy

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy Dancehall musician Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy

Ghanaian reggae/dancehall musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has responded to some criticisms from Stonebwoy pior to his performance at Vybz Kartel’s concert in Jamaica.

In a video making rounds on social media on January 4, 2025, Shatta Wale accused the “Jejereje” hitmaker of being driven by jealousy, claiming that Stonebwoy’s statements were merely out of envy.

He further explained that in 2025, he would no longer engage with individuals or negative comments aimed at bringing him down.

“Unless you are a jealous person, you would want to fight others. But I won’t fight anyone this year because I’m not a fighter like Nelson Azumah. I’m here to speak the truth and focus on building the industry so that everyone can benefit,” Shatta Wale stated.

The musician then reflected on the long journey it took for him to share the stage with Vybz Kartel, stating that it had been a lifelong dream.

“I told myself the first time I would perform in Jamaica, it should be with Vybz Kartel. It took me 20 years to make that happen. Before he was arrested, I wanted to perform with him, and then he went to jail. I had to wait for him for thirteen years for this to become a reality,” he added.

Shatta Wale also addressed online comparisons between himself and Stonebwoy after a viral video showed him speaking Patois with some unknown individuals.

“When you are true to yourself, you will go places. People need to understand that I come from somewhere. I’m even learning Spanish now because the lady who saved me is Spanish,” he explained.

Background

On December 31, 2024, Shatta Wale performed at Vybz Kartel’s ‘Freedom Concert ‘in Kingston, Jamaica, marking a milestone in his career.

This concert was special as it marked Vybz Kartel’s first live performance in over 14 years following his release from prison.

Prior to the concert, Stonebwoy, in an interview, referred to Shatta Wale’s performance as merely a “curtain raiser.”

Had I helped the NDC, I would have been rewarded – Carlos Ahenkorah defends controversy

0

Former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah Former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah

Former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, has addressed the controversial ballot-snatching incident that occurred in 2021 during the election of the Speaker of Parliament.

In an exclusive interview with UTV, monitored by MyNewsGH, Ahenkorah defended his actions, citing a lack of recognition for his unwavering loyalty to his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The incident, which shocked the nation and made headlines worldwide, occurred shortly after the 2020 general elections, during the election of the Speaker of Parliament.

As the votes were being cast for the Speaker, Carlos Ahenkorah, in a dramatic and highly criticized move, seized a ballot box and fled the scene, disrupting the parliamentary process.

This act of defiance took place during a tight race between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Alban Bagbin, and the NPP’s Prof. Mike Oquaye.

Alban Bagbin ultimately emerged victorious, but Ahenkorah’s actions were widely regarded as an unprecedented moment in Ghana’s political history.

In his interview, Ahenkorah explained his actions, stating that he believed his dedication to the NPP had gone unrecognized, even though he carried out the incident in what he considered to be a defence of his party.

“My loyalty to my party went unrecognized,” Ahenkorah said. “Even President Akufo-Addo, who I stood by throughout the years, did not acknowledge what I did. I acted in the best interest of the NPP.”

“Had I acted in favour of the NDC, I would have been celebrated and rewarded,” he added, suggesting that his loyalty to the NPP, despite the controversial nature of his actions, was overlooked.

The auction received total bids amounting to GH¢5.371.75 billion, exceeding the target of GH¢4.326 billion by GH¢1.045.75 billion.

According to results released on January 6, 2025, the government secured GH¢3.531.54 billion for the 91-day bill, accepted GH¢604.39 million for the 182-day bill, and GH¢1.235.82 million for the 365-day bill.

However, not all bids in this week’s auction were accepted.

The interest rates for the latest auction were set at 28.19% for the 91-day bill, 28.91% for the 182-day bill, and 30.15% for the 365-day bill.

Treasury bills have become the government’s primary source of borrowing due to its lack of access to the international capital market.

Meanwhile, the government aims to borrow GH¢5.198 billion in the upcoming auction this week.

Okudzeto Ablakwa’s ORAL team told to investigate sports ministry over alleged GH¢486m debt

Mustapha Ussif and Okudzeto Ablakwa Mustapha Ussif and Okudzeto Ablakwa

A Communicator for the Movement for Change, Solomon Nkansah, has urged the Mahama government’s anti-corruption team, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), to investigate the Ministry of Youth and Sports over an alleged debt of GH¢486 million.

He accused the sports ministry of spending a whopping $250 million to host the All-African Games, with the money not properly accounted for.

The Movement for Change communicator noted that his team petitioned the office of the Special Prosecutor to hold the ministry accountable for the expenditure, but there was no positive feedback.

“I heard the Ministry of Youth and Sports is owing about GH¢486 million. Was it not the same ministry that spent close to $250 million on the All-African Games? We petitioned the Special Prosecutor on how those monies were expended.

“They used almost $16 million to renovate hostels on the Legon campus; meanwhile, when I went there, it was just air conditioners that had been fixed. The woman that said she used $15 million to cook, we need to look into it,” he said during a panel discussion on TV3.

He further called on the ORAL, led by North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP)

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to probe the sports ministry over the debt.

“There needs to be proper accountability and audit. So, the ORAL team should come in, and it even goes beyond that because we know the people who misused the money,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports are yet to respond to claims of owing GH¢486 million.

US accuses RSF of Sudan genocide and sanctions its leader

0

Allies of RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo accused the US of double standards Allies of RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo accused the US of double standards

The US has accused the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing genocide and imposed sanctions on its leader.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday said Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, was being punished for his role in “systematic” atrocities against the Sudanese people during the 20-month conflict.

He said the RSF and allied militias were responsible for the murder of “men and boys – even infants”, as well as brutal sexual violence against women on ethnic grounds.

The militias have also targeted fleeing civilians and murdered innocent people escaping the conflict, Blinken said.

“Based on this information, I have now concluded that members of the RSF and allied militias have committed genocide in Sudan,” he said.

In response, the RSF has accused the US of double standards and for failing to effectively address the ongoing crisis.

“The decision… expresses the failure of the [US President Joe] Biden administration to deal with the Sudanese crisis and the double standards it followed [with regards to the crisis],” Hemedti’s adviser, El-Basha Tbaeq, said in a post on his X account.

He added that this may complicate the Sudanese crisis and hinder negotiations to address the root causes of the conflict.

The RSF has been fighting the Sudanese military since April 2023, and there has been a growing outcry about its conduct during the war.

Both sides have been accused of atrocities, with the conflict leading to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

In May, US special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello said that some estimates suggested up to 150,000 people had been killed in the conflict.
