SAS invites 21 Satellites 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup Winners for Matured Investment Cheques

0

The SAS Finance Group has written to the Ghana Football Association to extend invitations to the 21 players of the Black Satellites 2009 U20 World Cup winning team for collection of their investment cheques.

This follows the maturity of the fifteen(15)-year investment made on behalf of the Black Satellites 2009 U-20 World Cup playing body by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on January 4, 2025.

The invitation extended to the players was contained in a letter addressed to the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association and copied to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. A total investment of GHc210,000 was made on behalf of the 21 players, with each player allocated GHc10,000 by the Ministry in 2009.

“This investment has matured after 15 years, and the players can now collect their cheques from the SAS Office in Accra, starting from January 8, 2025”, said SAS.

“To collect their cheques, players must present a valid Ghana Card for identification purposes. If a player is unable to collect their cheque personally, they can authorize a third party to do so by presenting a notarized Power of Attorney”, the statement continued.

“The SAS Office is located on the 14th floor of the World Trade Centre, Independence Avenue, Accra”, the Statement went on to say.

This investment package also included an annual insurance cover to cater for life and health-related expenses for each player over the 15-year period, SAS added.

Ghana’s Maths Queen inspiring girls into quantum science

0

Known in Ghana as the Maths Queen, Dr Angela Tabiri is the first African to win The Big Internet Math Off competition – quite an achievement for someone who had not initially planned to study mathematics.

The 35-year-old Ghanaian “finds joy in solving puzzles and mathematical questions” and hopes her 2024 win will open up the world of mathematics to other African women – who have traditionally been discouraged from taking the subject.

Sixteen mathematicians were invited to compete for the tongue-in-cheek title of “the world’s most interesting mathematician” – a public vote event started in 2018 by The Aperiodical blog.

The first winner was Dr Nira Chamberlain, the first black mathematician to be included in the British reference book Who’s Who and a vice-president of the professional body, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

During the event they all compete against each other – so two in each match – and then it goes to quarter-finals and semi-finals until the big match to decide who has explained their chosen mathematical concept in the most illuminating way.

Dr Tabiri’s passion is quantum, or non-commutative, algebra, which she researches at the Ghana branch of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (Aims).

Aims started in South Africa and then expanded to Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon and Rwanda – to provide post-graduate training and research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr Tabiri is also the academic manager for the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Programme, a mentoring and support scheme for high or secondary school girls in Ghana.

It was set up by Aims-Ghana in 2020 to “ensure that we have a pipeline of young girls who will be leading in research and innovation in the mathematical sciences – in academia and also industry”.

Dr Tabiri says the numbers of girls and boys studying maths at high school is roughly equal but then drops off at university level.

This is partly because, she says, female students assume is that if they do maths, the only job they can do is teach, because maths is still seen as a “boy’s subject” – and there are very few female role models.

This is something Dr Tabiri is trying to change.

But her journey into maths was not straightforward.

She grew up in Ashaiman, one of the poorer, densely populated neighbourhoods of Tema, an industrial hub and port an hour’s drive east of the capital, Accra.

Her family home was happy but noisy – she has four sisters – and Dr Tabiri would often seek out the peace and quiet of the local youth community centre so that she could study.

She wanted to follow in the footsteps of two sisters and study business administration at university.

But her grades, although high, were not high enough – and so she was accepted instead for mathematics and economics.

“It was a blessing in disguise,” Dr Tabiri says. “Numbers and puzzles fascinated me – but I never thought a career in maths was for me.”

In 2015, Dr Tabiri got a scholarship to do her PhD at Glasgow University in Scotland. It was hard work, she says – and it was there that she experienced a seminal moment.

She went to see Hidden Figures, the film about black American women mathematicians who worked at the US space agency, Nasa, in the 1950s, during the era of segregation in the US.

“It was amazing seeing the story of these black women told on that global stage,” she remembers. “I had a lot of goose bumps watching it.”

She was particularly inspired by Katherine Johnson, whose extraordinary mathematical skills and calculations were so crucial to the success of US space flights.

“Katherine Johnson worked so hard – and for a long time her work was hidden. She made me realise that I just have to keep going.

“If your work is not even recognised now, it will be recognised sometime in future. It was a real turning-point for me.”

Ghana reached an historic milestone in 2024 when Dr Gloria Botchway became the first woman to graduate from the University of Ghana with a PhD in maths.

It was a journey full of hardships – including selling water and yams at the roadside as a six-year-old.

Dr Tabiri is trying to support other African girls and women from less privileged backgrounds to follow their maths dreams through her FemAfricMaths non-profit organisation.

Along with other volunteers, she gives lessons to the youngest high-school students in person and online.

She also posts on social media interviews she does with leading female mathematicians from all over the world.

Dr Tabiri is also hugely passionate about the potential of quantum science and technology – for which mathematics is essential.

She is proud that Ghana, backed by Mexico, spearheaded proposals that 2025 be declared the UN International Year of Quantum Science and Technology – on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of modern quantum mechanics.

Quantum mechanics emerged from studies to uncover how ultra-tiny particles – the most fundamental bits of matter, energy and light – interact with each other to make up the world.

It led to the development of the internet, solar cells, and global navigation satellite systems.

Researchers and big tech companies from across the world – including China, the US, the UK, Australia and South Africa – are now racing to develop quantum technologies, including quantum computers and ultra-precising measuring and sensor devices.

The hope is that complex problems will be solved at lightning speeds – and there will be huge innovations in areas like medicine, environmental sciences, food production and cyber-security.

“There are lots of conversations now – the advantages and disadvantages – the jobs that will be created,” says Dr Tabiri.

Africa’s fast-growing population, already the youngest in the world, will be the world’s largest workforce by 2040, according to the UN.

“But that doesn’t mean that we will get the jobs,” says Dr Tabiri.

She hopes to organise a “quantum road show” as a first step in introducing schoolchildren to quantum science at a much earlier age that she was.

“We want young people to start developing an interest in and building all the relevant skills during their basic schooling,” she says.

The road show will be based on a recent quantum computing course she held for secondary-school girls who attend classes at Aims-Ghana during their holidays.

The course discussed what it takes to build a quantum computer, its current fragilities – and the challenges quantum computing poses to current systems, such as cryptography.

Working with Unesco, Dr Tabiri will also host a week-long “Quantum Hackathon” in July at Aims-Ghana for about 40 post-graduate students from different African countries.

“We want them to use their quantum skills to solve some of the greatest challenges that we face, real-life problems,” says Dr Tabiri.

“It’s very urgent that we position our youth for this next big revolution.”

John Mahama to introduce Islamic banking instruments, reduce Hajj fares

0

In order to address the exorbitant expenses of the yearly Hajj trip for Muslims in Ghana, President John Mahama has announced the creation of a five-member task committee.

The goal of the task force, which is headed by Collins Dauda, the Asutifi South Member of Parliament, is to find ways to lower the cost of the pilgrimage.

Mr. Mahama announced at a National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving ceremony on Friday, January 10 at the National Mosque in Kanda in Accra that the task force will go to Saudi Arabia on Monday, January 13 to attend the yearly Hajj conference.

“One of their primary responsibilities is to negotiate arrangements that will drastically reduce Hajj fares. This will enable more Muslims who wish to perform the pilgrimage to fulfill this religious obligation,” he stated.

In keeping with a campaign pledge to raise awareness of Islamic holidays in Ghana, he also revealed plans to add a second holiday for the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

“As part of our promises, we assured the Muslim community of adding one more holiday to the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Once Parliament resumes, we will amend the Holidays Act to officially recognise an additional day for the Sallah festivities,” Mr Mahama said.

Social media users slam Ferguson for ruining Ashley Young’s dream of playing with his son

Ashley Young with his son Tyler Ashley Young with his son Tyler

Darren Ferguson, son of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, is facing backlash for depriving Ashley Young of a memorable FA Cup moment.

During Everton’s 2-0 win over Peterborough on Thursday, January 9, 2025, 39-year-old Young came on as a second-half substitute, while his 18-year-old son Tyler, a Peterborough player, watched from the bench.

A historic milestone was poised to be achieved at Goodison Park, as a father-son matchup in the FA Cup seemed imminent—a first in the competition’s 154-year history.

However, Tyler remained on the bench as Peterborough’s FA Cup run ended with a 2-0 loss to Everton in the third round, courtesy of goals from Beto and Iliman Ndiaye.

Ashley Young expressed his disappointment on social media, posting a single-word message: “GUTTED.”

Fans on social media have since offered words of sympathy, recalling Ashley’s previous statement that sharing the pitch with his son was a lifelong dream.

Some critics also took aim at Darren Ferguson, suggesting his managerial success is largely due to his family connections.

From Actor To Politician, A Journey Of Passion And Purpose

0

According to a report from Ghanaweb. In an engaging interview with blogger Mr. Woode, host of MR WOODE STUDIOS, celebrated Ghanaian actor and political figure Mr. Beautiful, whose real name is Clement Bonney, shared personal insights into his life, career, and the philosophy that drives him. Known for his vibrant personality and unique perspectives, Mr. Beautiful’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, passion, and dedication to both his craft and his beliefs.

Mr. Beautiful explained that his distinctive stage name stemmed from his deep appreciation for beauty in all forms. Rather than merely expressing gratitude with a simple “thank you,” he often used the word “beautiful,” which eventually became synonymous with his identity. This habit reflects his admiration for the finer aspects of life and serves as a reminder of his positive outlook.

Growing up in Abura Dunkwa in Ghana’s Central Region, his love for the performing arts blossomed in the Methodist Church. There, he engaged in inter-cultural programs and youth group activities, which helped to cultivate his passion for acting. His journey in the film industry began when he joined forces with legendary figures like Bob Santo and later accepted an invitation from Miracle Films, marking the start of his professional career.

Despite facing challenges within the Kumawood film scene—a subject he prefers to leave behind—Mr. Beautiful remains dedicated to the growth of Ghanaian cinema. He draws inspiration from prominent figures such as Alexander Dua, Araba Stamp, and Kwaku Crentsil, grounding his career in the values of hard work and dedication.

Beyond his acting career, Mr. Beautiful has made a significant impact in the political realm. As a proud member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he has navigated criticism for his political views but remains steadfast in his convictions. He believes that politics is an essential part of life, and someone must step up to lead, even amidst opposition.

His admiration for President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the NDC’s vision for a “24-hour economy” has motivated him to create music that supports the party’s policies. Through his songs, he aims to make these concepts accessible to all Ghanaians, fostering unity and understanding across the nation.

When discussing the sacrifices involved in openly supporting a political party, Mr. Beautiful remarked, “Life is full of sacrifices. Even getting married is a sacrifice. Campaigning for the NDC is my personal choice, and I stand by it.” His words reflect a deep commitment to his beliefs and the choices he has made throughout his journey.

Mr. Beautiful’s story is one of authenticity and service. Whether on stage, in films, or within the political arena, he continues to use his voice to inspire positive change. His unwavering faith in the power of art, politics, and personal sacrifice highlights his profound love for Ghana and its people.

As he reflects on his life, Mr. Beautiful remains focused on leaving behind a legacy filled with purpose and passion. His dedication to his values and contributions to Ghanaian culture solidify his status as an enduring icon.

Through his work and life philosophy, Mr. Beautiful exemplifies that success is not solely defined by talent; rather, it also revolves around making choices that align with one’s principles, even when faced with adversity. His life serves as a celebration of resilience, creativity, and an unyielding belief in a brighter future for Ghana.

Resign and go home peacefully, else you will lose again—Prophet Kofi Oduro Urges Leaders

0

Renowned Ghanaian preacher, Prophet Dr. Kofi Oduro, has issued a strong call to political leaders, urging them to step down gracefully before facing public humiliation. Speaking during a sermon at the Alabaster International Ministries, the prophet warned against overstaying one’s time in leadership, emphasizing the importance of recognizing when a season has ended.

“Resign and go home peacefully, or you will lose again,” Prophet Oduro declared, highlighting the dangers of clinging to power despite waning influence and support. He stressed that humility and wisdom are key virtues in leadership, and leaders who refuse to step aside risk tarnishing their legacies.

“It is not weakness to step down; it is wisdom,” he added. Prophet Oduro argued that leadership should focus on service rather than self-preservation. He urged leaders to prioritize the greater good over personal ambition, reminding them that history is littered with examples of leaders who faced disgrace because they failed to acknowledge when their time was up.

While Prophet Oduro refrained from naming specific individuals, his message has been widely interpreted as a reflection on leaders—especially in Africa—who cling to power despite declining public confidence or electoral defeats.

His sermon has sparked widespread discussions about governance and leadership, with many praising the preacher for addressing such a pressing issue.

“This is the message Africa needs,” one social media user commented, commending Prophet Oduro for his courage. Another added, “Leaders must learn to leave when the applause is loudest. Staying too long invites disgrace.”

Prophet Oduro emphasized that stepping down is not a sign of failure but rather a mark of maturity and foresight. “Leadership is a temporary stewardship. Bowing out when your time is up preserves your dignity and legacy,” he noted, encouraging leaders to prioritize their long-term reputations over short-term gains.

His message resonates with growing calls for democratic transitions and responsible governance, particularly in regions where prolonged power struggles often lead to instability. Prophet Oduro’s words serve as a reminder that leadership is about service—and true leaders know when to let go for the benefit of those they serve.

NDC Creatives Caution Mahama Against Appointing Rex Omar

0

Rex Omar

Some creatives who supported the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its successful bid for power in the 2024 elections are urging President John Dramani Mahama to avoid appointing veteran musician Rex Omar to any position in the Creative Arts sector.

Among the critics is Kumawood actor Big Akwes, a prominent  supporter of the NDC during the campaign.

In a video in circulation, he allegedly expressed strong opposition to Rex Omar’s potential involvement in the creative industry, arguing that the NDC spokesperson on Creative Arts cannot manage the sector effectively.

“We do not need Rex Omar anywhere near the creative industry. The President can choose to appoint him somewhere else, but not in the creative arts industry,” Big Akwes stated.

He further revealed plans by some creatives to organize a press conference on January 17 to formally present their concerns to President Mahama.“This press conference will ensure the President is fully aware of our position and makes no mistake in bringing Rex Omar into the Creative Arts industry,” he added.

The pushback highlights internal disagreements within the NDC’s creative arts community over leadership roles in the industry.

As President Mahama prepares to unveil all his appointments, the concerns raised by stakeholders signal potential challenges in aligning the party’s plans with the expectations of its supporters in the sector.

NPP communicators sound like they have set a trap for Mahama

0

Osei Kwame Griffiths is a former CEO of the National Identification Authority Osei Kwame Griffiths is a former CEO of the National Identification Authority

A former Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Osei Kwame Griffiths, has criticised some communicators of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their recent remarks about the country’s power generation challenges, suggesting that they are setting a trap for the John Dramani Mahama-led government.

Speaking on Joy Prime on Friday, January 10, 2025, he pointed out that some phrases used by NPP communicators, such as ‘keep the lights on, let’s see,’ are designed to paint the government as incompetent.

Osei Kwame Griffiths argued that the situation is being manipulated to create a negative narrative about the new administration’s ability to address the power sector’s challenges.

“And you see the pronouncements by a lot of these NPP communicators. ‘Keep the lights on, let’s see,’ ‘Mahama is coming back with dumsor’, those kinds of communications are making it appear as though somebody has set this trap to make it look as if the incoming government is incompetent, you know, and therefore cannot keep the lights on, when in actual fact, you know, the timeline for preparation is very clear that they had dropped the ball. They failed in their responsibility to make sure that we have enough fuel,” he noted.

Speaking after the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama in Accra, on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, John Jinapor, disclosed that the country’s fuel stock was low, with only five hours of fuel remaining.

“I have bad news for you. The confirmation we are getting is that we have only five hours of fuel stock. If you look at heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don’t have up to two days, and so in two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel,” he stated.

He further criticised the outgoing administration for its failure to procure necessary fuel supplies, leaving the incoming administration in a vulnerable position.

“This administration has not ordered any fuel as we speak, and it takes on average four weeks for the fuel to arrive and four weeks for the fuel to be treated, and so we are in a very serious situation,” he added.

John Jinapor, who has now been nominated as Minister of Energy-designate, also pointed out that during the transition, the outgoing administration had assured them that fuel parcels had been procured.

However, checks indicated there is not enough fuel to last even two days.

“Today, right after President Mahama assumed office and I served on the transition, my checks indicate that we do not have fuel that can cater for even two days, and so clearly we have a major, major problem,” he emphasised.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to resolving the country’s energy challenges and preventing a resurgence of frequent power outages, popularly referred to as ‘dumsor.’

Speaking at the National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana on Thursday, January 9, 2025, he acknowledged the critical energy issues facing the country and emphasised the government’s resolve to tackling them.

“We are assuming office at a critical time in our nation’s history. Ghana is faced with significant challenges. But that is exactly the reason why you elected us. We will transparently let you understand what those challenges are, and we will take responsibility for solving them,” he noted.

Finance minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson Finance minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

The Islamic Finance Research Institute of Ghana (IFRIG) has reacted to the nomination by President John Dramani Mahama of a finance minister-designate in the person of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

IFRIG congratulated the nominee through a January 9, 2025, statement signed by its Director General, Dr. Shaibu Ali.

“Your deep understanding of public finance, macroeconomics and fiscal policy equips you to navigate the complexities of the economy with insight and expertise,” the statement read in part.

It further reminded the nominee about some key promises as relates to Islamic Banking and Finance which are contained in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto.

Among others, IFRIG underscored the imperative of Ghana pursuing membership of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), exploring the areas of assets-backed securities and Islamic financial products as a means to bridging funding gaps and attracting ethical investments and promoting financial inclusion.

“Such measures would align with global trends and bolster the resilience of Ghana’s financial system, paving the way for robust economic growth that benefits all,” IFRIG stressed.

Ato Forson is one of three ministerial nominees submitted by the presidency to Parliament earlier this week. The two other nominees include John Jinapor as energy minister-designate and Dominic Ayine as Attorney General and Minister for Justice-designate.

Parliament has slated their vetting for Monday, January 13, 2025.

Mahama’s economic policies will reduce rate of ‘hook-up’ among ladies

0

Popular Ghanaian pastor, Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha, has expressed optimism that the recent change in government will bring about economic stability and job opportunities for the youth.

According to him, such opportunities will bring a reduction to the number of ladies who resort to ‘hook-up’ as a result of unemployment among the youth.

Speaking on the current state of the economy in an interview on Onua TV, Prophet Kumchacha noted that with President John Dramani Mahama at the seat of governance, the dollar’s rapid depreciation will eventually decline, leading to a boost in business and employment opportunities.

“The dollar that was fast rising will eventually come down; when the rate comes down, the businessmen will be happy, and the youth too can get jobs.

“Most Ghanaian young ladies have been involved in ‘hook-up’ as a result of unemployment. This act is all over the internet, so you shouldn’t be surprised that we all know about it,” he said.

Prophet Kumchacha expressed hope that President John Mahama’s administration would address these economic and social issues, providing relief to Ghanaians, especially the youth.

One term not an excuse for broken promises

Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjuor play videoMember of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjuor

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjuor, has charged President John Dramani Mahama to deliver on the numerous promises he made to Ghanaians prior to assuming office.

According to the Deputy Minister of Education under the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mahama shouldn’t use the excuse of having only one term in office to fail the nation on his promises.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM on January 8, 2024, he reminded the president of some of his promises, including the inclusion of the private sector in the Free SHS policy and the signing of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 (anti-LGBT bill), among others.

“We wish them well, but the promises and all the things that he said he will do…sector by sector, Free SHS, promising the private sector inclusion, free level hundred entry into tertiary education, his promise to end dumsor, what he said about the LGBT bill that he would have signed if he was president.

“Ghanaians have written all those promises down and are waiting for him to deliver. So, he shouldn’t come out and say he could not deliver everything he promised.

“He shouldn’t behave like this because he is going on a one-term in office and won’t fulfill his promises. I believe the election result is a lesson to everyone,” he said.

John Dramani Mahama assumed office as president on January 7, 2025, succeeding Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Resetting the Economy: Livestock industry localisation critical

0

Efforts to reset Ghana's economy must include reforms in the livestock sub-sector Efforts to reset Ghana’s economy must include reforms in the livestock sub-sector

Efforts to reset Ghana’s economy must include significant reforms in the agriculture sector, particularly the livestock sub-sector, to address structural weaknesses, boost efficiency, and promote sustainable growth.

In 2023, the country imported meat and edible meat offal worth US$210.13 million, according to data from the United Nations COMTRADE database. Additionally, the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) reported US$17.7 million in livestock imports for slaughter from neighboring countries.

The Ashaiman-Tulaku Cattle Market in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality receives 30 to 40 trucks of cattle daily, accommodating over 4,500 heads of cattle, alongside goats and sheep. The Ghana Livestock Breeders and Traders Association (GLIBTA) estimates weekly inflows at 8,400 cattle, highlighting the sector’s potential for job creation.

Livestock imports from Burkina Faso, Niger, and Nigeria constituted 70 percent of the sector’s supply in 2023. The livestock industry contributed GH₵4.9 billion to Ghana’s GDP in 2022, representing 13 percent of agriculture’s total GDP contribution.

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged support for local industries under his proposed “24-hour economy” policy, emphasizing livestock production. This strategy is expected to play a crucial role in restoring the economy and creating jobs nationwide.

“An innovative and vibrant 24-hour Ghanaian economy anchored in agriculture and agribusiness will unlock dormant potential and harness our people’s energy and creativity,” Mr. Mahama said in his inauguration speech, identifying agriculture and agribusiness as key pillars for economic transformation.

Ghana consumes an estimated 300,000 metric tonnes of poultry annually, but only 5% of this demand is met by local production. This gap presents a substantial market opportunity for local farmers to increase production and reduce reliance on imports.

Nearly US$400 million is spent annually on imports from the Netherlands, Brazil, and the USA. Additionally, US$1.2 billion is spent on imported packaged and processed meat products, according to Anthony Morrison, CEO of the Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana (CAG).

CAG noted that with the right incentives to boost domestic production, the US$1.2 billion spent annually on imported packaged and processed meat products could remain in the country, driving economic growth and creating jobs.

Meanwhile, GLIBTA revealed that the Tulaku livestock market generates an estimated GH₵600 million monthly and fully complies with tax regulations. However, Alhaji Moro Akakade, GLIBTA’s Chairman, lamented the lack of attention from past agriculture ministers.

“Despite the economic prospects and employment generated here, the facility has seen little improvement in infrastructure, which affects animal health, biosecurity, and overall operations,” he said.

GLIBTA remains optimistic that the new government will engage stakeholders to address challenges and enhance local production, positioning the livestock industry as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic recovery.

Renowned sports website CIES Football Observatory has rated Chelsea and Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson as the most valuable African player.

According to CIES, the parameters used to determine players’ values include age, contract duration, performances, career progression, and international status.

CIES has valued Jackson, who has become a key player for Chelsea since joining the club in 2023, at €105.4 million.

Sitting second on the list is Jackson’s compatriot and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, valued at €70.7 million. The attacking midfielder has faced challenges in his first two seasons at Tottenham, struggling to secure a regular spot in the lineup since joining from Ligue 1 side Metz. However, he has shown great potential in the limited opportunities he has received.

Ghana and West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus is third on the list, valued at €66.2 million. Kudus had a phenomenal debut season with the Hammers, scoring 18 goals and providing 7 assists. However, his performance has dipped in the current 2024/2025 season, with fewer than 10 goals scored so far. This decline in form has seen his value drop significantly.

Completing the top five on the list are Nigeria and Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface and Morocco and Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz.

Most valuable African players by estimated transfer value, as per CIES Football

Nicolas Jackson (Senegal) – €105.4M

Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal) – €70.7M

Mohammed Kudus (Ghana) – €66.2M

Gun-wearing leader sparks concern at Ghana inauguration

Capt Ibrahim Traore (L) greeted Ghana's new President John Mahama (R) Capt Ibrahim Traore (L) greeted Ghana’s new President John Mahama (R)

Burkina Faso’s military leader Capt Ibrahim Traore sparked concern when he attended Tuesday’s inauguration of Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama with a holstered pistol at his waist.

Some have described this unusual move as a breach of security protocol.

Others have seen it as a lack of trust in the ability of Ghanaian officials to protect the Burkinabe junta chief.

It is not clear if Traore had permission to carry the weapon and the new Ghanaian government has not responded to a BBC request for comment.

Mahama was sworn in after beating the candidate from the then governing party, Mahamudu Bawumia, by a large margin in last month’s election.

Traore, was one of 17 heads of state present, and his visit came at a time of diplomatic tension in West Africa.

Burkina Faso, along with two other military-led states – Mali and Niger, has broken away from the regional bloc ECOWAS to form a new alliance.

Security analyst Vladmir Antwi Danso said that it is unusual for a head of state to carry a sidearm to an inauguration ceremony as the security of the visiting leader is the responsibility of the host.

He indicated that Ghanaian and Burkinabe security personnel should have discussed the issue to ensure the right protocols were being followed. “Either that wasn’t done or it was poorly done,” Dr Danso told the BBC.

While another security analyst, Retd Col Festus Aboagye, agrees that the host nation is typically responsible for protecting visiting presidents, he says bilateral arrangements can lead to variations.

He suggested that a consensus may have been reached to allow Traore to wear his military attire and carry his sidearm, along with some of his personal security detail.

“I don’t think it’s a security breach in the context of how people are saying, [as] if he had taken out the weapon to shoot. That’s a bit far-fetched,” Col Aboagye said.

The Alliance of Sahel States, made up of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, has accused Ecowas of trying to destabilise their countries. Traore may have had that at the back of his mind when attending the inauguration ceremony.

But the fact that a military leader was “wielding a gun demonstrating that they have that power of the gun because they’re military leaders and attending an investiture of a democracy is a bit awkward”, Emmanuel Bensah who works on issues of regional integration, said.

Relations between Ghana and Burkina Faso have been strained, particularly after Ghana’s former President Nana Akufo-Addo accused Traore of harbouring Russian mercenaries.

Traore’s attendance at the inauguration was seen as a significant diplomatic gesture aimed at normalising relations between the two countries.

Ghana’s support is crucial in helping Burkina Faso address its deadly militant jihadist insurgency, which poses a threat to coastal West African states.

A Bold and Timeless Classic

The high top fade is one of the most iconic and enduring hairstyles in the world of men’s grooming. With its roots in the 1980s, this bold and eye-catching haircut has stood the test of time, evolving over the years while retaining its undeniable appeal. The high top fade is known for its striking contrast between the closely shaved sides and the voluminous hair on top, making it a standout style that exudes confidence and individuality.

Originating in African-American communities, the high top fade was popularized by hip-hop artists, athletes, and urban fashion icons in the late 80s and early 90s. Its height, sharp lines, and distinct shape made it a symbol of rebellion, creativity, and empowerment. Today, the high top fade continues to make waves, both in retro and modern interpretations, while also being embraced by people from diverse backgrounds.

The defining characteristic of a high top fade is the pronounced difference between the faded sides and the top, which is usually kept much longer. This contrast creates a visually striking silhouette, and the height of the top can be adjusted based on personal preference. Some men opt for a more dramatic, taller fade, while others prefer a shorter, more subtle version that still maintains the clean, defined shape.

There are several variations of the high top fade, allowing individuals to customize their look. The tapered high top fade offers a gradual fade along the sides, providing a more polished and sophisticated appearance. For those seeking a more edgy, modern look, the disconnected high top fade features a sharp contrast between the long top and the faded sides, creating a bold, attention-grabbing effect. Another trendy option is the curved high top fade, where the fade follows a curved line, adding a unique twist to the classic style.

Maintaining a high top fade requires regular upkeep to ensure that the edges are sharp and the fade remains clean. This often involves frequent visits to the barber for trims and touch-ups, as the hair on the sides will need to be kept short to maintain the fade’s crisp look.

In conclusion, the high top fade haircut is a timeless and versatile style that continues to inspire men of all ages. Whether worn with a retro flair or adapted for a more contemporary look, the high top fade is a bold way to express individuality, confidence, and style. With its rich cultural significance and ever-evolving variations, this classic haircut remains a standout choice for men looking to make a statement with their hairstyle.

Why Ghana can’t match Nigeria’s status in international influence

Artiste manager, George Britton Artiste manager, George Britton

A UK-based Ghanaian artiste manager, George Britton, has attributed the gap between Ghana and Nigeria’s music industries to a lack of business acumen and a focus on negativity.

In an interview with Sammy Flex TV, Britton noted that Nigerians dominate the UK music scene, filling large stadiums and achieving successes that surpass those of local artists.

When asked why Ghanaian artistes have been unable to reach such heights internationally, Britton pointed out that Ghanaian musicians fail to treat their craft as a business.

“I don’t think we Ghanaians take the music we do as business. You will have to build partnerships, and you are in a space where people bring money, people bring other things to help you get to the top. But we don’t take advantage of that,” he said.

Britton also criticised Ghana’s media for perpetuating negativity, which he claims has created a detrimental image of the country on the world stage.

In contrast, he said Nigeria has successfully cultivated a positive international image, with Nigerians often being regarded as successful individuals in the UK.

“When you’re here and you look back home, the things we see on our radio and TV, we focus too much on negativity.

“Yes, there’s negative news in Nigeria as well, but what we don’t see is that outside Nigeria, they’ve been able to create an image for themselves internationally,” he said.

Britton’s comments come as more calls have been made for Ghanaian creatives to be proactive in their approach to their craft.

NPA allays fears of petrol shortage in the north

0

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has assured the public that there is no cause for alarm regarding the reported pockets of petrol shortages in the north.

A statement issued by the NPA said that following reports of petrol shortages in the northern part of the country, the Technical Committee on Energy, set up by the Chief of Staff, met on January 10, 2025, to discuss modalities to resolve the issue.

It said the logistical challenge identified is being comprehensively resolved using a three-pronged approach.

The first approach is that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are being granted a special dispensation to load petrol from the Bulk Energy Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) depot in Kumasi to serve retail outlets in the five regions in the northern part of the country.

Another arrangement is that OMCs are being granted a special dispensation to load more petrol from depots in Tema to augment what is being loaded from Kumasi to serve retail outlets in the five regions in the northern part of the country.

Arrangements are also being made in collaboration with BOST to move nine million litres of petrol in the pipeline between the Buipe and Bolgatanga depots into storage in Bolgatanga to immediately serve retail outlets in the five regions in the northern part of the country.

The statement said the three-pronged solution is being implemented concurrently to immediately address the issue.

“Consequently, we wish to encourage the consuming public to go about their normal business and avoid panic buying.

“The NPA wishes to reassure Ghanaians of adequate fuel stocks in the country and there are vessels lined up to discharge products into the country,” it stressed.

Former Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, has blamed Black Stars’ struggles on the mishandling of team captaincy by football authorities.

The issue of captaincy has long been a contentious topic in Ghanaian football, often leading to internal conflicts and public outcry for better management.

Recently, Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has reignited the debate.

“If we don’t try to remove that thing… Jordan was made a captain for a while, later he was no more…that is why the African Cup of Nations we didn’t go anywhere,” Oppong Asamoah stated during an interview with Happy FM, as monitored by Ghanasoccernet.com

He emphasized that the ongoing captaincy saga overshadows coaching efforts, warning that without resolution, “we can go and bring Maresca, we can go and bring who and who… if we don’t manage the captaincy well, the guys will continue to disappoint us.”

Fans now await proactive steps to address these leadership issues within the team.

‘Sarkodie should bow his head in shame’ – DJ Slim on ‘back to gari soakings’ comment

From L to R: Entertainment personality DJ Slim and rapper Sarkodie

Entertainment personality DJ Slim has expressed dissatisfaction with a recent Instagram post shared by Sarkodie.

On January 8, 2025, Sarkodie posted on his Instagram page, “Back to gari soakings like we never left.”

This comment sparked controversy on social media, with some netizens interpreting it as a reaction to President John Dramani Mahama’s return to office on January 7, following his victory in the 2024 election.

But speaking on this development during a discussion on his “The Street Is Watching” podcast on January 9, 2025, DJ Slim sternly criticised the Sark Nation boss.

He said if the comment had a political undertone, then Sarkodie should be ashamed.

“If this has a political undertone, Sarkodie, you should bow your head in shame wherever you find yourself. You have disappointed us so much,” he said.

DJ Slim also criticised the timing of Sarkodie’s post, stating that it was poorly timed for the message it conveyed.

“I think this is the wrong statement for him based on the time. The post could mean different things, but the timing suggests he has publicly declared himself as a member of the New Patriotic Party,” he added.

Background

Sarkodie has been vocal in the past about his dissatisfaction with the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama.

From 2013 to 2016, the rapper used his music to voice his grievances, with one notable example being his 2014 track “Inflation,” which expressed his displeasure with Mahama’s leadership.

However, Sarkodie became notably silent during the tenure of President Akufo-Addo, despite repeated calls from his fans.

A Vibrant Expression of African Culture

Guinea styles refer to the distinct and elaborate clothing and fashion trends originating from Guinea, a country in West Africa. Known for their rich cultural heritage, Guineans have long celebrated the art of dressing, which is seen as an important expression of identity, tradition, and social status. The fashion in Guinea is a beautiful amalgamation of traditional fabrics, intricate designs, and modern influences, creating a unique blend of old and new.

At the heart of Guinea styles is the use of vibrant fabrics such as bazin riche and tie-dye, which are often embellished with elaborate embroidery and beadwork. Bazin riche, a luxury fabric often made of cotton, is particularly popular for formal occasions such as weddings and religious ceremonies. The fabric is known for its shiny finish and comes in a variety of bold, bright colors. When paired with intricate embroidery, it creates a striking ensemble that exudes elegance.

Another popular style is the boubou, a loose-fitting, flowing garment typically worn by both men and women. The boubou is often made from brightly colored cotton or silk and is adorned with intricate patterns and embroidery. This garment is not just a fashion statement but also holds cultural significance, representing the wearer’s status and personal taste.

Accessories also play a significant role in Guinea styles. Women often accessorize with jewelry such as gold or silver necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, while men might wear hats, scarves, or walking sticks to complement their outfits. Traditional headwraps, known as lappas, are also commonly worn by women, further enhancing their outfit’s elegance and grace.

In recent years, Guinea styles have gained international recognition, with African designers showcasing their collections on global platforms. The fusion of traditional and contemporary elements continues to influence fashion across the globe, with people worldwide embracing the rich patterns, bold colors, and craftsmanship that define Guinea’s sartorial identity. Through their styles, Guineans continue to preserve their cultural legacy while making a significant impact on global fashion trends.

Mahama’s “Tots, Tots” Appointments Unacceptable – Minority Leader

0

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has slammed President John Dramani Mahama’s initial ministerial appointments, describing the approach as inadequate and reflective of unpreparedness.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin made the remarks during parliamentary proceedings, expressing frustration with the announcement of only three ministerial nominees, a move he called a “tots, tots” appointment.

Unfulfilled Promises
The Minority Leader noted that the Speaker of Parliament had announced only three nominees: the Finance Minister-designate, the Energy Minister-designate, and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed disappointment, stating that a government that had campaigned on promises of a “24-hour economy” should have been more prepared.

“This government told us they were ready for governance. They promised a 24-hour economy. Mr. Speaker, we expected them to be ready from day one, not to start with this ‘tots, tots, tots’ approach,” he said.

Call for More Appointments
The Minority pressed for the swift nomination of additional ministers for key sectors such as Agriculture, Roads and Highways, and Lands and Natural Resources. He specifically mentioned individuals like Armah Kofi Bua and Eric Opoku, whom he expected to feature prominently in the appointments.

“You cannot start with just energy, finance, and the attorney general. We want to hear more names, and we need ministers for critical sectors to address the pressing issues facing the nation,” he added.

Heated Exchange
The remarks sparked a lively exchange on the floor of Parliament. Some members of the Majority, particularly Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, questioned the timing and appropriateness of Afenyo-Markin’s concerns, as the session was initially focused on corrections to votes and proceedings.

However, the Minority Leader stood his ground, stating that his comments were necessary and reflected the urgency of the situation.

“Mr. Speaker, I took your leave to make this point because it is a matter of national importance. The government must act decisively and show Ghanaians they are ready to lead,” he asserted.

According to him, the delayed release of a comprehensive ministerial list is a sluggish start to the new administration.

The Minority has made it clear they will continue to hold the government accountable for its promises and performance.

John Dramani Mahama was formally inaugurated as the President of Ghana during a significant ceremony at the Black Star Square in Accra on Tuesday, January 7.

President Mahama demands report on investigations into electoral killings

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Jan 10, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to furnish him with a report on the status of investigations into killings that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general election.

He said he had directed his Executive Secretary to write to the IGP for the report.

“Justice must be done and we also will ask the Attorney General when he takes office to determine fair and adequate compensation for the families of those who have lost their lives,” he said.

President Mahama stated this at the Moslems National Thanksgiving Service held on Friday at the National Mosque in Accra.

The event, chaired by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, was to thank Allah for a peaceful December 7 general election.

The President said even though the 2024 general election passed on peacefully, Ghanaians must recognise that a “few of their citizens lost their lives.”

“My understanding is almost five of our citizens were killed in the process of the election,” he said.

“This is not the first time. In 2020 we know that eight of our citizens were killed. If this continual injustice is not stopped, then what it does is it breeds impunity.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), therefore, deemed it necessary to investigate what led to those killings and take action to prevent their recurrence, President Mahama said.

As Muslims offered their thanksgiving, he urged them to remember that the end of the elections marked the beginning of greater responsibility for all of them.

He said regardless of political affiliation, Ghanaians must work together for the development and prosperity of the nation, which was their shared vision.

“Our diversity as a people is not a weakness. Indeed, it is our strength,” the president said.

“Whether we’re Muslims or Christians or from any other faith, our collective aspirations for a better future bind us together.”

“Let us, therefore, commit to fostering harmony and mutual respect in all aspects of our lives. We must also recognize that elections are not without their challenges.”

The event was attended by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the NDC national Chairman, Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary, and other leading figures of the Party.

Medikal

Rappers Medikal and Amerado have locked horns in heated exchanges over who deserves to be crowned Ghana’s best rapper in 2024.

The feud began when Amerado, in a post on X, argued that he should win the Artiste of the Year award at the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awar ds, citNewsone ing his accomplishments. “Artiste of the Year conversation without Amerado under the 2024 Year of Review is an exposure of ignorance and consequently brutal to the industry and upcoming ones,” he wrote.

Medikal swiftly dismissed the claim, asserting his supremacy in the rap game. “I fi ghostwrite rap for your favourite rapper and still kill am on a song. Nobody de rap pass Medikal for Ghana I swear. And that’s why I’m the highest-paid rapper in the country too!” he declared.

The dispute escalated when Medikal backed a fan’s comment mocking Amerado’s popularity, claiming Amerado couldn’t even “sell out” Lindador.

In response, Amerado fired back with a jab at Medikal, referencing past controversies involving his wife, Fella Makafui, and accusing Medikal of exposing her private matters. Medikal retaliated by ridiculing Amerado’s claim that his music was played in Al-Nassr Football Club’s dressing room, calling it exaggerated. Amerado countered by accusing Medikal of cancelling a New York show due to poor ticket sales.

Stakeholders in oil palm industry urge Malaysian counterparts to invest in Ghana

0

Players in the palm oil industry have engaged the Malaysian High Commission to encourage Malaysian palm oil firms to invest in Ghana’s palm oil industry.

The industry players want their counterparts in Malaysia to speed up Ghana’s transition period of becoming self-sufficient with the production of oil palm.

Reports have it that Europeans in Malaysia in the early 1900 travelled to Ghana to learn about oil palm plantation cultivation and managed to take away seeds, and production techniques to grow their industry.

This has enabled Malaysia to be named the world’s second-largest producer of palm oil after Indonesia as their economy largely rests on the commodity.

The country’s palm oil industry, according to statistics, produces about 90 million tonnes of lignocellulosic biomass, including empty fruit bunches, oil palm trunks, and oil palm fronds, as well as palm oil mill effluent (POME).

Meanwhile, Ghana’s oil palm plantation cultivation has dwindled as the industry players are seeking to partner their Malaysian counterparts to grow the palm oil sector.

At a business meeting on Friday January 10 in Accra, officials from the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Peekaf Company Limited, challenged the Malaysian High Commissioner to champion the partnership through institutional research, knowledge sharing, equipment manufacturing, strategic investment and technology transfer to accelerate the development of Ghana’s Palm Oil industry.

The Director of Enclaves, Zones and Application at the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Kwame Asante Nsiah after the meeting expounded that the partnership will enable Ghana to learn from Malaysia’s expertise in sustainable palm oil production to take advantage of the huge demand in Africa.

The partnership, according to Mr. Asante Nsiah, equally aims at creating an opportunity to strengthen the bonds between Malaysia and Ghana particularly in the palm oil industry.

The Malaysian High Commissioner, Syed Nauzer Idid on his part praised the leadership of Peekaf Company Limited and the Free Zones Authority for taking a bold step to pool resources with Malaysian palm oil firms to develop Ghana’s palm oil industry.

He described the move by Peekaf Company Limited and Ghana Free Zones Authority as apt and pledged to facilitate a Networking Programme where youth in Agric will travel to Malaysia to be trained in Palm Oil Trade.

The commissioner is optimistic Ghana and Malaysia could collaborate to enhance oil palm trade between the two countries.
The Chief Executive Officer of Peekaf Company Limited, Alex Okyere, on the other hand prayed, industry players in the two countries will adopt strategies for implementing mechanized farming to enhance the production of palm oil to meet the growing demands of Ghana, West Africa, and beyond.

Ras Kuuku has boldly proclaimed his 2018 hit song “Wo” as the most significant track of the past 20 years.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News, the award-winning artist reflected on the enduring impact of the song and the hurdles he overcame to solidify his legacy.

“This song, ‘Wo,’ is not just a track—it’s history. It has defined an era and solidified my place in the music industry,” Ras Kuuku declared, exuding pride.

Released in 2018, “Wo” quickly resonated with fans, becoming one of Ras Kuuku’s most notable works. Its catchy rhythms, powerful lyrics, and authentic sound struck a chord with audiences, propelling him to greater heights. However, the artist revealed that the song’s journey to success was far from smooth.

“Some people in the industry tried to kill the vibe. They didn’t want it to shine, but greatness can’t be buried,” Ras Kuuku shared, his voice tinged with defiance. “If not for those challenges, ‘Wo’ would have gone even further than it has. But look at it now—it’s still alive, still powerful.”

Despite the setbacks, “Wo” became an anthem, drawing fans from diverse backgrounds and securing its place as a timeless hit. For many, the song’s infectious energy and relatable themes symbolized resilience, echoing Ras Kuuku’s own journey in the music industry.

Reflecting on his career, Ras Kuuku emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s artistry despite external pressures. “This song is a testament to the fact that good music will always find its way. I put my heart into it, and that’s why it resonates with so many people.”

The artist’s claim has sparked discussions within the Ghanaian music space, with fans and industry stakeholders debating the impact of “Wo” compared to other major hits over the last two decades. Some agree with Ras Kuuku, citing the song’s enduring relevance and influence, while others point to the success of other iconic tracks from his contemporaries.

Prophet Nicholas Osei, a Ghanaian pastor, has disclosed that he’s responsible for the mistakes by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh known as NAPO during the 2024 election campaign.

The clergyman who is affectionately called Prophet Kumchacha said he spiritually worked on Napo, Dr. Bawumia and Akufo-Addo to always mention the name of Mahama.

“Do you know the spiritual work I did ahead of last year’s elections, in fact, I did a lot of things behind the scenes and I’m responsible for the way Napo was talking.

“I worked on Napo, Bawumia and Akufo-Addo, so if you observed you’d realise that they were always mentioning the name of Mahama during the campaign.

“You remember Lomotey nie, Mahama nie and all those loose talks and mistakes that Napo made whenever he was speaking, I was the one working on him spiritually,” he revealed on Onua TV as MyNewsGh.com monitored.

President John Dramani Mahama and AfDB's Akinwumi A. Adesina President John Dramani Mahama and AfDB’s Akinwumi A. Adesina

President John Dramani Mahama has held a key meeting with Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Accra.

The two discussed how the AfDB could continue to support and finance major economic and social infrastructure projects, especially as the new government sets out to reset the economy and begin revamping deteriorated critical infrastructure.

This meeting comes at a critical time, as President Mahama’s government seeks to reset the economy and revamp deteriorated critical infrastructure.

The AfDB’s support would be instrumental in addressing Ghana’s economic growth challenges, which have been hindered by macroeconomic instability, tightening global financial conditions, and spillover effects.

The AfDB’s Country Strategy Paper (CSP) 2024-2029 for Ghana outlines priority areas, including supporting industrialisation and private sector development, as well as infrastructure development.

These align with President Mahama’s goals, and the meeting marked a crucial step in strengthening the partnership between Ghana and the AfDB.

Ghana forward Mohammed Kudus Ghana forward Mohammed Kudus

Ghana forward Mohammed Kudus played the full 90 minutes for West Ham United in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the Third Round of the English FA Cup on Friday, January 10, 2025.

The match marked the first outing under new manager Graham Potter, and West Ham started brightly, showing promise in the opening stages.

The Hammers took an early lead in the 9th minute when Lucas Paquetá latched onto a pass from Crysencio Summerville during a swift counterattack, firing a precise shot into the net to make it 1-0.

West Ham maintained their advantage into the second half but saw their fortunes shift dramatically as Aston Villa mounted a comeback.

In the 71st minute, Ian Maatsen’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper, only for Amadou Onana to capitalise on the rebound and level the score at 1-1.

Just five minutes later, Villa sealed their victory. Ollie Watkins set up Morgan Rogers, who coolly slotted the ball into the net from close range, leaving the West Ham defense and goalkeeper with no chance.

Despite Mohammed Kudus’ full participation and his efforts to influence the game, West Ham struggled to regain control and were ultimately eliminated from the competition.

The defeat brings an end to West Ham’s FA Cup journey this season, while Aston Villa advances to the Round of 32.

Beninese army suffers ‘hard blow’ in border attack

Benin has in recent years witnessed increasing jihadist attacks in the northern region Benin has in recent years witnessed increasing jihadist attacks in the northern region

Benin forces have suffered heavy losses in an attack near the border with insurgency-hit Niger and Burkina Faso, authorities have said.

Colonel Faizou Gomina, the national guard’s chief of staff, said one of Benin’s most well-equipped military positions had been hit in the north on Wednesday evening.

“We’ve been dealt a very hard blow,” Col Gomina added.

It is not clear yet who is behind the attack but the country has in recent years witnessed increasing attacks in the northern region blamed on jihadist groups based in neighbouring countries.

More than 120 Beninese military officers were killed between 2021 and December 2024, a diplomatic source told the AFP news agency.

Last month, gunmen killed three soldiers and wounded four others who were guarding an oil pipeline in the north-east.

Col Gomina did not provide a death toll for Wednesday’s attack, but the main opposition party, The Democrats, said about 30 soldiers had been killed in the Alibori region, Reuters news agency reports.

A security source put the death toll at 28, according to AFP.

“We are continuing cleaning-up operations. Forty assailants have been neutralised so far,” the military source added.

Col Gomina said the position attacked had been “one of the strongest and most militarised” and called on military commanders to improve their operational strategies in order to counter security threats.

“Wake up, officers and section chiefs, we have battles to win,” he said.

In 2022, Benin deployed nearly 3,000 troops to curb cross-border incursions and reinforce security in the north.

I’m happy seeing King Paluta, Fameye now embracing Highlife

0

Ghanaian musician and rapper Amerado Burner has claimed that he is the first successful rapper in the Ghanaian music industry to transition into highlife music.

During a press conference held in Accra on January 9, 2025, Amerado stated that he paved the way for fellow artistes like Fameye and King Paluta to follow in his footsteps.

He explained that due to his creativity, he was the first artiste in 2024 to top music charts with popular highlife songs such as “Kweku Ananse” and its remix.

“In January 2024, ‘Kweku Ananse’ and its remix were both in the top ten on all major music platforms, which was unprecedented. I was the first artist in 2024 to achieve that, and I’m incredibly humbled to see artists like King Paluta and Fameye now embracing highlife music,” he said.

Amerado also pointed out the decline in Nigerian music’s dominance on Ghana’s charts, adding, “Gone are the days when Nigerian songs were dominating our charts. Now, people are tuning into more Ghanaian music, and I’m happy to see that.”

The “Kweku Ananse” hitmaker further addressed rumours about him being a “confused” musician, explaining that his ability to rap and sing is part of his versatility.

“I don’t like to stay in my comfort zone. As a kid, I always wanted to try new things and challenge myself. When I was rapping, I often featured artists who sang the chorus, but I also wrote their choruses. I’ve always had the desire to sing and rap simultaneously. Sometimes you need to grow and discover yourself, but that doesn’t mean I’ve switched from rapping entirely,” he emphasised.

He continued, “If I can rap and sing together, why limit myself? We live in a society where people want to see you focus on one thing. But if rapping and singing work for me, it could mean I’m just lucky. Let’s replace confusion with being dynamic.”

A Fusion of Tradition and Elegance

0

The fusion of lace and Ankara fabric has become one of the most fashionable trends in African and global style circles. Combining the intricate, delicate nature of lace with the vibrant, bold patterns of Ankara creates a stunning contrast that appeals to both traditional and modern tastes. This fusion reflects the seamless blending of cultures, offering a dynamic approach to contemporary fashion.

Ankara, also known as African wax print fabric, is known for its bold, colorful patterns that tell stories and represent different ethnic identities. It has been a mainstay in African fashion for decades, thanks to its versatility and rich cultural significance. Lace, on the other hand, has been a symbol of sophistication, often used for formal occasions due to its delicate, feminine qualities. The combination of these two fabrics creates unique and stunning styles suitable for a variety of occasions.

One popular style is the lace and Ankara gown, where the body of the dress may be made from Ankara fabric, while the sleeves, neckline, or back of the dress incorporate lace. This combination gives the dress an elegant and refined touch, perfect for weddings, parties, or other formal events. Another trending design is the use of lace as an accent, such as lace appliqué detailing on the Ankara fabric, adding texture and dimension to the outfit.

For those who prefer more modern or casual styles, lace and Ankara can also be combined to create skirts, blouses, and jumpsuits. A simple Ankara skirt paired with a lace top or vice versa creates a fashionable yet relaxed look, ideal for everyday wear or semi-formal occasions. Lace can be used subtly in trims, borders, or even as an overlay, adding a touch of elegance to the otherwise bold Ankara fabric.

The beauty of combining lace and Ankara lies in the ability to create looks that are both traditional and innovative. Whether you prefer bold and dramatic or soft and elegant, the versatility of these two fabrics ensures that there is a perfect design for every occasion and personal style.

In conclusion, the marriage of lace and Ankara fabric offers a beautiful way to celebrate African heritage while embracing modern fashion sensibilities. These combinations allow for the creation of stunning, sophisticated, and unique outfits that capture the beauty of both worlds, making them a must-have in any fashion-forward wardrobe.
