Ghana Aviation Expert Clarifies 60-Minute Distress Protocol After Radar Loss

Festus Aboagye
A security analyst, Col Festus Aboagye (Rtd)

Retired security expert Colonel Festus Aboagye has detailed critical procedures for declaring aircraft emergencies in Ghana, countering public confusion after a military helicopter crash.

His August 16 TV3 interview emphasized that disappearing from radar doesn’t immediately signal disaster.

“Declaring distress happens after 60 minutes, not 30,” Aboagye stated, addressing misconceptions following the Airforce Z9 tragedy. He explained radar limitations: “A plane flying below 1,000–3,000 feet or in rough terrain may vanish without crashing.

ICAO protocols mandate a 30-minute alert phase, then 30 distress minutes before emergency status.”

Detailing the August 6 incident timeline, he noted: “After disappearing at 10:02 AM, controllers waited until 10:32 to initiate alerts.

Only at 11:02 with no contact was distress declared.” This counters theories the helicopter crashed immediately after losing radar at 10:16.

Imagine flying through Ghana’s mountainous regions where radar coverage drops. Aboagye’s insights reveal how terrain and altitude dictate response windows a nuance often lost in public crises.

His clarification aims to prevent rushed judgments during future incidents while upholding ICAO standards.

Ghana’s historical past bears the scars of military overthrows, one of which led to the ascension of Ignatius Kutu Acheampong as Head of State, following a military coup that overthrew the democratically elected Progress Party government, led by Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia, on January 13, 1972.

After five years in power, the regime held a 5th anniversary celebration in 1977 to mark its tenure.

A video footage, sighted by GhanaWeb and shared on X by ASK, a platform known for its historical archives, shows the events that took place during the celebration, including the activities that marked its climax.

As part of the celebrations, a boat race and surf swimming competition were organised at the Jamestown Beach, attracting participants from various regions who represented different teams.

The event also featured a prize for the winner.

In the video, participants were seen seated in their respective boats on the calm sea, while others were swimming toward the finish line to claim the prize: a carton of gin and 200 cedis at the time.

Ultimately, the Abandze team from the Central Region won the first prize, to the cheers of the crowd, including dignitaries and top officials who had gathered to witness the event and support the teams.

Kennedy Agyapong Rushes To Cynthia Morrison’s Aid After urgent Call From A PrIsoner

0

In a dramatic late-night twist, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong reportedly rushed to assist former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, after receiving an urgent call from a prisoner. The incident, which unfolded in the Central Region, has stirred intense political and public interest.

According to accounts from individuals close to the matter, the unexpected chain of events began when a detained individual somehow reached out to Agyapong, alerting him to a situation involving Morrison. Details remain murky, but sources indicate the call came around 10:03 p.m., prompting the outspoken lawmaker to act swiftly. By approximately 10:15 p.m., he had allegedly contacted local police officials to verify the claim and gather information.

Reports suggest the events centered around a hotel where certain individuals, including a sitting MP, were said to have been confronted by police. Allegations have surfaced about possession of illegal substances, although no formal charges have been confirmed at this time. Law enforcement officers, including the area’s police commander, have yet to issue an official statement providing their version of events.

Cynthia Morrison, a former Member of Parliament for Agona West in the Central Region, has not spoken publicly about the matter. However, political insiders believe her name became linked due to the prisoner’s urgent plea and the fact that she was a key figure in the constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2020 elections.

Kennedy Agyapong’s swift involvement has been seen by supporters as a sign of loyalty and readiness to protect fellow party members. He is known for stepping into politically sensitive situations, often challenging both political opponents and even members within his own party when necessary.

The unfolding events have sparked debate about the circumstances under which the prisoner managed to make the call, and why the situation required such a rapid political intervention. Opposition figures have also begun questioning the handling of the incident, suggesting that the public deserves full transparency from the police service.

Bolga Technical Institute closed down after rampaging students torched school property

0

The Bolgatanga Technical Institute (BOTECH) in the Upper East Region has been closed down indefinitely following a violent students protest on Friday (August 15) that has left six students injured and several school properties destroyed by fire.

The disturbance, which reportedly began around 12:30 a.m., saw some irate students vandalising and setting ablaze the school’s library block, which is attached to the administration block and the senior housemaster’s office.

The school’s library was burnt, with almost all books and furniture destroyed.

The school’s electricity meter and fuses in the Administration block were also destroyed, while the side mirrors of a faulty school bus, with registration number GV 414-17, was damaged in several parts.

What triggered the protest

Some staff of the school who spoke to Graphic Online said they were taken by surprise at the students’ action as they could not point to the cause of the protest.

“I don’t know what actually caused this and I have enquired from my colleagues and they seem not to have an idea what has caused this protest because we all reported to work only to be surprised by this,” a staff member said.

However, some sources revealed that the unrest was allegedly triggered by the suspension of six students for misconduct.

On Thursday night, some of their colleagues were said to have mobilised to retaliate, leading to the violent scenes.

Swift response from personnel of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service brought the situation under control which prevented the blaze from spreading to other facilities like the administration block.

The injured students are receiving treatment at the Upper East Regional Hospital.

Immediate closure

Upon assessing the situation, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) ordered the indefinite closure of the school to help de-escalate tensions and facilitate ongoing investigations. Six students suspected to be directly involved in the violence are currently wanted by the police.

Meanwhile, all the students have been sent home with the school under tight security patrol police officers.

Background

In 2022, a similar incident at the Bolgatanga Technical Institute led to its indefinite closure after violent clashes erupted between students and security personnel during their final examinations.

The unrest began when four students and two teachers were picked up by officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

Investigations revealed that some final-year students had connived with two second-year students who had obtained a copy of a mathematics paper on their phones. Answers were provided to the final-year students, who left the examination hall under various pretexts to access the solutions before returning to complete their scripts.

The arrests prompted invigilators to tighten movement restrictions in the exam hall, refusing to allow students to leave during the paper. This angered many students, who resorted to violence, vandalising school properties and attacking staff.

Similarly, the Zuarungu SHS and Bawku Senior High Technical School also in the region currently remain closed as well due to disturbing incidents.

Torkornoo’s suspension will stand – AG tells Commonwealth Lawyers – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has clarified that the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will remain in force until the inquiry committee concludes its work and submits a report to President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Ayine emphasized that the suspension strictly adheres to the provisions of the 1992 Constitution, dismissing claims of constitutional breaches or executive interference in the handling of the three petitions against the Chief Justice.

His comments follow a joint statement by the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, issued on August 14, urging President Mahama to immediately reinstate Justice Torkornoo. The statement described Ghana as a country with a strong tradition of upholding the rule of law.

The two legal bodies expressed concern over the April 22, 2025, suspension of the Chief Justice.

Responding, Dr. Ayine said neither the Constitution nor the Latimer House Principles prevent the suspension of a Chief Justice once a prima facie case of misconduct or misbehaviour has been established.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to judicial independence, separation of powers, and the rule of law, cautioning that any suggestion to the contrary was unfounded and risked misrepresenting a constitutional process being conducted fairly, transparently, and in line with the law.

“The suspension will, therefore, remain in effect until the inquiry committee completes its work and submits its report, to which His Excellency, the President will adhere,” he said.

Background

On April 22, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office following the establishment of a prima facie case based on three undisclosed petitions alleging misconduct and incompetence.

Under Article 146(6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the president, after consulting the Council of State, may suspend a Supreme Court justice if a prima facie case is established and appoint a committee to investigate. President Mahama did exactly that—forming a five-member inquiry panel chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, with other members including Justice Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah-Dzisah.

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior Supreme Court judge, was appointed acting Chief Justice during the investigation process.

The suspension sent shockwaves through Ghana’s legal community. The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) condemned the action as unconstitutional, arguing that the president did not publish any Constitutional Instrument or regulations to justify the exercise of discretionary power, as required under Article 296 of the Constitution.

Similarly, the Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) denounced the decision as a breach of constitutional norms and judicial independence. CDM challenged the impartiality of the inquiry, citing the committee’s composition as politically skewed and lacking transparency, thereby undermining due process.

Chief Justice Torkornoo has publicly defended herself, characterising the suspension and removal proceedings as “arbitrary,” “cruel,” and unconstitutional. She has refused to resign, emphasising that doing so would amount to submitting to a flawed process and forfeiting her right to defend herself.

The NPP (New Patriotic Party) echoed these concerns, condemning the suspension as unconstitutional and warning that it jeopardised Ghana’s democratic integrity.

‘Sometimes allow the government to spend’ – Kennedy Agyapong on helicopter crash

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has called on Ghanaians to allow the government to spend, particularly on budget allocations for critical national procurements.

Speaking at the state funeral of six victims of the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash, Agyapong noted that citizens often oppose government spending on certain projects.

He urged Ghanaians to allow the state to make such investments when they are in the national interest.

He recalled that during the tenure of the NPP, which is now in opposition, Ghanaians complained about the government’s decision to purchase aircraft, describing it as wasteful.

According to him, such attitudes discourage leaders from making decisions that could save lives and strengthen national security.

Kennedy Agyapong emphasised that the recent helicopter tragedy should serve as a lesson for the country to prioritise spending in areas that directly support development and safety.

“I want to take this opportunity to console the bereaved families, but sometimes, the nation needs to understand when the state spends money on certain things. Whenever the government decides on a project, Ghanaians start criticising. But where the government spends in a way that will help the nation, we should all agree and support it,” he said during the state funeral on August 15, 2025.

The Tributes, Personalities and Sorrow: See photos from the final farewell to the six helicopter crash victims

“If the aircrafts are old, then we need to get new ones…so sometimes we have to understand when the state spends money on certain things; this helicopter was approved during President Kufuor’s time. It was two, but they criticised it and we had the courage to go for one,” he added.

He added that this tragedy should also help dispel the fear among politicians who hesitate to approve essential procurements due to public backlash.

Ghana bade farewell to six of the victims at a state funeral on August 15, 2025, while two Muslims among them were buried on August 10 in accordance with Islamic rites.

The crash of the Z-9 military helicopter, which belonged to the Ghana Armed Forces, claimed the lives of several prominent figures, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Other victims were Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, former Central Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.

Members of the helicopter’s crew who also died in the crash were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Rights Group Demands Action as Nigerian Businesses Attacked in Ghana

Inflation In Accra
Accra

African refugee advocates have sounded the alarm over violent attacks targeting Nigerian immigrants in Ghana, calling for urgent government intervention.

The Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocacy Foundation (ARRA) condemned recent mob actions including looting and property destruction as violations of Ghana’s constitution and regional treaties.

Dr. Okey James Ezugwu, ARRA’s Executive Director, labeled the incidents “xenophobic aggression,” stressing that immigrants deserve protection regardless of alleged individual misconduct.

“These acts have no place in a law-governed society,” he stated, noting Ghana’s obligations under ECOWAS protocols and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The group highlighted that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution guarantees security, property rights, and non-discrimination to all within its borders. Yet shops owned by Nigerians were recently ransacked without legal recourse. ARRA insists accusations should trigger arrests and trials—not collective punishment.

Ghana faces concrete demands: prevent further attacks, prosecute perpetrators, compensate victims, and uphold ECOWAS treaties. ARRA also urged Nigeria to boost diplomatic support and emergency aid for affected citizens.

Still, the stakes extend beyond borders. “Protecting immigrants isn’t charity—it’s a legal duty,” emphasized Ezugwu, challenging African leaders to move beyond rhetoric. The group seeks AU and UN monitoring to address anti-immigrant sentiment’s root causes.

Imagine your livelihood destroyed overnight while authorities stand by. That fear now haunts Ghana’s Nigerian community as regional unity frays.

DJ Azonto Demands 12 Million Bags Of Cement From Lil Win Over ‘Alla Woyo’ Usage

0

The ongoing tension between Ghanaian musician DJ Azonto and actor-musician Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, has taken a new twist as DJ Azonto has reportedly demanded a staggering 12 million bags of cement and other forms of compensation over the alleged unauthorized use of his popular phrase, “Alla Woyo.”

According to DJ Azonto, the term, which he popularized in his songs and stage performances, has become strongly associated with his brand identity. He claims that Lil Win’s recent use of the phrase in his latest projects infringes on his creative rights and diminishes the originality he has worked hard to establish.

The demand, which many observers have described as both surprising and controversial, includes not only 12 million bags of cement but also other unspecified benefits. DJ Azonto insists that this is not just about financial gain but about respect for intellectual property in the entertainment industry.

“Alla Woyo is my creation, my signature, and part of what defines me as an artist. You cannot just pick it and use it without recognition or agreement. This is about protecting creativity,” DJ Azonto is quoted as saying.

Lil Win, who has not officially responded to the demand, is known for incorporating street phrases and popular slang into his comedy and music projects. Industry stakeholders, however, are keenly watching the development, as it raises broader concerns about intellectual property rights in Ghana’s creative space, where slang and catchphrases often spread quickly among artists.

Entertainment analysts argue that while DJ Azonto’s demand for 12 million bags of cement may appear exaggerated, it could be a symbolic gesture meant to spark serious conversations about copyright, originality, and the respect due to creative works.

The dispute between the two entertainers has since generated heated debates on social media, with fans divided over whether DJ Azonto’s claims are legitimate or a publicity stunt.

For now, the industry awaits Lil Win’s official reaction, which may determine whether the matter escalates into legal action or is settled amicably behind the scenes.

Eyewitness details how Semenyo was racially abused by Liverpool fan

0

An eyewitness at the Liverpool versus Bournemouth game on the opening day of the Premier League has recounted how Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo suffered racial abuse.

Semenyo was the subject of an abuse from a fan in the opening half of the game at Anfield leading to the match being paused for some minutes before resumption.

The Ghanaian international reported the incident to the centre referee who went on to speak to officials from both clubs.

Bournemouth suffered a 4-2 loss in the game despite Semenyo’s brace in the second half.

Following the game, a fan at the stadium explained the details of the unpleasant incident at Anfield.

Below is the detailed explanation:

I’ll be go into the details on tonight as I have hundreds of replies to my earlier post and there’s no point replying to them all.

So this fella has had his season ticket for many years at Anfield. He’s passionate but often takes things way too far but it is what it is. He has crossed the line before by throwing stuff at officials (usually chewing gum) and stewards looked embarrassed rather than do anything.

So I guess that’s allowed his behaviour to escalate maybe in his brain.

About 28 mins into the game, Semenyo goes to take a throw in. He’s not a player that goads the fans and seems like a decent lad. The sort of player that people want playing for their club.

For reasons I’ll never know, the fella near me in bay 7 (I’m bay 9) decides to go over to him in his wheelchair and shouts something at Semenyo. Semenyo then asks him to repeat it and he repeated it and threw his chewing gum at him.

Then 2 mins later the play is stopped. The fella next to me says he hopes Mark hasn’t said anything racist to Semenyo but then I’m getting texts from people saying it’s about the fan in the wheelchair allegedly abusing Semenyo.

We missed the first goal because all of us were uncomfortable being around this guy, who’s now sat in silence, probably realising what he’s done and he’s soon to be in the shit.

We didn’t want him near us and people (including myself) were calling him a racist prick. It was just uncomfortable to be around and we wanted him gone. The stewards didn’t have a clue what was going on either.

He was eventually removed from the ground at 21:01 by police. Firstly saying he’d refuse to move and wouldn’t leave but then agreeing to leave, then kicking off. I’d gone to the toilet by this point but saw him kicking off near the exit.

I believe there is some kind of protocol where the police have to remove them and not stewards and they have to get a sort of investigation going first. That’s why it took them 30 mins to get him out of the ground.

So the club now have to help the police with an investigation and rightly so. If he’s found to have racially abused Semenyo, he needs to be banned for life. No excuses.

Another fan chimed in saying “Semenyo didn’t look upset” so sorta sticking up for the abuser or playing devils advocate. But he just looked shocked to me, which is probably why he asked him to repeat himself.

So props to Semenyo for having the brilliant game he had. All 3 goalscorers were black, which was quite fitting really. The irony is, the fella had a “no room for racism” badge on his shirt.

I think at the time, it was annoying that we had to be around the prick but I think the club acted as fast as they could. I believe stewards can eject fans if they personally hear abuse but otherwise a report needs to be made for it to happen.

On the flip side of this, look at the amount of disability abuse there is in response to this. Discrimination is discrimination, so if you’re making your “edgy jokes” about disability on the back of it, you’re just as bad.

I’ve cropped his face out for obvious reasons but it’s incredibly ironic to have that badge on you and then do something like that. There’s obviously going to be a legal process ongoing now. The head steward asked us all a few questions and everyone was helpful.

Proud of the way the club acted in response to one prick. Anfield is a very welcoming place to people from all walks of life. Let’s keep it that way.

Liverpool also issued a statement on the issue adding that they are going to investigate the matter.

The project was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade The project was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade

Simon Madjie, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), has called on the diplomatic missions and Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) to actively promote Ghana’s investment opportunities across global markets, investors, and networks.

He said the mission’s commitment to championing governmental initiatives within their respective countries would significantly help to deepen cross-border collaborations.

Madjie made the call during an engagement with the diplomatic community on the Centre’s flagship Investment Opportunity Mapping Project (IOMP) aimed at identifying and promoting viable investments across the country.

The project, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), seeks to address the challenge of unequitable distribution of investment across Ghana, with 80 per cent concentrated in the Greater Accra Region.

Madjie stressed that the project would spotlight untapped opportunities in all 261districts of Ghana, thereby attracting needed investments to previously neglected areas with exciting potential.

He said the collective participation and advocacy of diplomatic missions, DFIs, and international cooperation agencies would enhance efforts to attract targeted Foreign Direct lnvestment (FDI) and promote bilateral economic cooperation.

“The IOMP is not simply about attracting more investments; it is about balancing growth, reducing regional disparities, creating jobs, expanding exports, and building a diversified, resilient economy,” he added.

He also announced that the Centre was working around the clock to reform the GIPC Act, which would enhance investor protection and improve the ease of doing business in Ghana.

Abdul Razak Baba, Deputy CEO of the GIPC, encouraged the Diplomatic Missions to become “Vocal Ambassadors” for Ghana’s district-level investment potential, share the information widely, and connecting investors to upcoming platforms such as the Ghana International Investment Summit (GIIS) scheduled for 2026.

“Your technical expertise, resources, and innovative financing solutions will be vital in identifying and transforming district-level opportunities into bankable, high-impact investments,” Mr Baba said.

He reassured that the Centre was committed to working with partners at all stages, including refining investment profiles to co-hosting targeted investor engagements.

Lovi Mehiawo, Deputy Director of Research at the GIPC, took participants through the scope, methodology, and expected outcomes of the IOMP, highlighting the strategic sectors and the 16 regions identified for priority investment.

A member of the Movement for Change, Philip Longdon, has termed as unfortunate, utterances of NPP flagbearer aspirant, Bryan Acheampong, that he is the biggest spender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Pan African TV’s Good Morning Africa on August 15, 2025, he slammed Bryan Acheampong for touting himself as the biggest spender of the opposition NPP.

“When the party was struggling in its days of formation and people were bringing the last of their old cars to help move leaders up and down the country to campaign; can he put a value on that?

“Those people who trekked and went to spread the message in remote areas; can you put a value to that? Where was Bryan Acheampong?” he quizzed.

He described as unfortunate the stage the NPP has gotten to, where prominence appears to be given to the avid display of opulence over long service and sacrifice.

“It is most unfortunate that our politics is moving in a direction where substance is downplayed (sic) over opulence,” he decried.

He condemned the remarks by the former minister, stressing that all around the world, financiers of political parties are silent over their contributions to avoid conflict of interest and other issues.

He warned that if such utterances are left unchecked it could cause massive confusion in the party; especially among grassroots members who break their back daily to campaign for the party.

“Please My Lord, I Don’t Have Evidence To What I Said Against Mahama” — Wontumi Presenter Admit

0

A shocking allegation has rocked the nation as unnamed sources point fingers at the President regarding a recent deadly helicopter crash. The claims, broadcasted on television, have sparked a fiery debate, with critics demanding evidence under the legal principle, “Who alleges must prove it.” Meanwhile, security proceedings have taken a dramatic turn, with suspects remanded for 100,000 to 150,000 bail, raising questions about human rights and national security.

The controversy deepened when Captain Smart, a prominent media figure, challenged the President directly, asking, *”How are you going to eliminate the president of the land?”* The discussion quickly shifted to political tensions, with critics arguing that nation-building, not party loyalty, should be the priority. Amidst the chaos, a mysterious reference to a *”China one day minority reporter”* and a staggering claim of 1,500 deaths added another layer of intrigue.

Ghana’s Armed Forces and National Security have been dragged into the fray, with demands for daily updates and concrete evidence. A key figure allegedly linked to the crash is under scrutiny, with some urging investigators to *”go straight to that person.”* As accusations fly, the President’s supporters dismiss the claims as baseless, while opposition voices insist on accountability.

The nation remains on edge, awaiting clarity on whether these allegations are politically motivated or grounded in truth. With tensions escalating, Ghanaians are left wondering: Who is truly responsible for this tragedy?

Asanteman in deep mourning: Fare thee well Asantehemaa

0

Last week, nation Ghana was virtually plunged into shock and dismay, mourning the sudden passing of eight gallant heroes.

They had perished in a devastating helicopter crash in their line of duty.

This week, the kingdom of Ashanti, Asanteman, has officially been notified of the passing of the queenmother of Ashanti, Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III. Kumasi and all the towns and villages in the kingdom have been thrown into a state of mourning with a tinge of black in their dressing to mourn with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.

An older blood sister of Asantehene, the fourteenth Asantehemaa was installed as queenmother in 2017, after the passing of her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the thirteenth queenmother. She reigned from 1977 to 2016.

Life history

Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III is reportedly the first of the five children of her mother who had three boys and two girls with Asantehene being the youngest of the five.
Born Nana Ama Konadu in Kwadaso, Kumasi, in 1927, she is said to have been sent, at a very young age, to live with and be raised by another relative, Nana Afia Konadu, in Ashanti New Town, also in Kumasi.

This was in line with some Ashanti traditions for royals.

It was there that she got trained to be a responsible woman for her future and where she learnt the rudiments of royalty.

She became very responsible and by the age of 22, she had a clearly defined faith.

She joined the Saviour Church of Ghana in Kumasi where she was baptised and christened Ruth, a name she does not seem to have used.

However, as a member of the royal family, she also found herself worshipping at the Anglican Church in Kumasi.

According to available history, she got married in 1959, at age 37, to the man of her heart, Opanin Kwame Boateng.

In 1995, during the reign of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, it was proposed that she become the queenmother of Asanteman.

The proposal did not go in her favour as it was perceived that she was too old for the role.

Her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem III, was at the time the Asantehemaa.

It was when her mother passed on in 2016 that her name came up as a suitable replacement. Her younger brother, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, endorsed her as the Asantehemaa in 2017.

As queenmother

She went through all the customary processes and consequently unveiled as the fourteenth queenmother of the Ashanti kingdom at a colourful ceremony at the Manhyia Palace that same year.

She reigned as queenmother with passion for development of her people, focusing on helping uplift education and maternal health in Asanteman.

To mark her fifth year reign as Asantehemaa, she sought to assist man of her heart, Opanin Kwame Boateng.

To mark her fifth year reign as Asantehemaa, she sought to assist  the Saviour Church of Ghana School.

The school authorities immortalised her name and honoured her by naming their school after her.

For that honour done her, Otumfuo Osei Tutu donated a new bus to the school to help them with the movement of the children around for educational purposes.

The Asantehemaa also took an interest in maternal health, to the extent that she sought to settle the hospital fees of a number of women who had given birth and needed money to settle their discharge fees.

Her interest in the area of maternal health led her to build a maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi at a time when the hospital needed the facility so badly.

She is said to have passed on at age 98 after a short illness, having ruled for eight years.

Asanteman is mourning a queenmother who was loved dearly especially for the motherly love she exhibited during the period of her reign.

She was calm and loving, welcoming all and sought to show this in many ways including how she received people without distinction.

As tributes keep pouring in and citizens and other dignitaries line up daily for condolence visits to Otumfuo, one would like to be counted from a distance, extending a hand of mourning to the Asantehene and the people of Ashanti.

May our queenmother’s soul rest peacefully in the God she discovered in her life at the prime age of 22.

India and Ghana Forge US$3 Billion Trade Path with Eye on Doubling

79th Independence Day celebrations in Accra

India’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Manish Gupta, has heralded a new era in bilateral ties, anchored by surging trade and strategic investments following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit—the first by an Indian premier in 30 years.

The trip elevated relations to a “Comprehensive Partnership,” unlocking fresh momentum for economic collaboration across West Africa.

Trade between the nations now hits $3 billion annually, with Ghana enjoying a positive balance fueled by gold exports. Indian foreign direct investment exceeds $2 billion, spanning 900+ projects in manufacturing, agriculture, and infrastructure. This includes $1 billion in concessional credit for development initiatives like port upgrades and renewable energy plants.

During his address at Ghana’s Parliament, Modi pledged to double bilateral trade within five years—a target Gupta called “ambitious yet achievable,” citing growing Indian corporate interest in Ghana’s digital economy and agro-processing sectors.

The High Commissioner highlighted deeper roots beyond commerce: Ghana’s role as India’s gateway to West Africa, and shared histories as pioneers of post-colonial sovereignty. “Ghana’s independence inspired the Global South; today, our partnership pioneers South-South cooperation,” he noted, linking Ghana’s legacy to India’s “New India” vision of becoming a developed economy by 2047.

For Ghanaian businesses, the pact promises expanded access to India’s 1.4 billion–consumer market, while Indian investors gain footholds in regional supply chains. As Accra seeks to diversify beyond commodities, technology transfer and skills development under the partnership could prove pivotal.

Ghana Slashes VAT Rate to 20% in Sweeping Tax Reform Push

Value Added Tax (VAT)
Value Added Tax (VAT)

Ghana is overhauling its Value Added Tax system with major reforms set to take effect in early 2026, aiming to boost compliance, ease business burdens, and widen the tax net.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) confirmed plans to fully implement the Fiscal Electronic Device Act (Act 966), mandating approved electronic sales gadgets for all specified businesses.

This move targets accurate transaction recording to curb revenue leakage. Simultaneously, new legislation headed to Parliament by October will slash the effective VAT rate from 21.9% to a cleaner, fully deductible 20% by scrapping the COVID levy and decoupling other charges.

“Currently, 8% of the VAT burden is non-recoverable, becoming a direct cost to businesses,” explained GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong. “Our reforms will make the full 20% deductible, removing that extra burden.”

The changes directly respond to President John Mahama’s call for a “human-centred” tax approach. Supporting this shift, an Independent Tax Appeal Board (ITAB) will launch by year-end, offering businesses a faster, less adversarial alternative to courts for resolving disputes.

Crucially, the GRA is pairing tech and legislative changes with a nationwide education blitz, especially targeting SMEs. Sarpong argues that when small businesses understand and trust the system, compliance improves, creating room for future rate reviews.

“If we expand VAT coverage effectively in retail and services, it strengthens our position to potentially adjust rates down the line,” he noted.

The combined strategy electronic monitoring, simplified rates, fairer appeals, and taxpayer education aims to build a broader, more equitable revenue base. For businesses and consumers alike, the promise is clearer rules and a lighter load. But will it work? Success hinges on smooth implementation and winning public trust.

Ghana Attorney General Defends Chief Justice Suspension Amid International Pressure

Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine
Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine

Ghana’s Attorney General has firmly rejected calls from international legal bodies to reinstate suspended Chief Justice Gertrude A.E.S. Torkornoo, insisting her suspension will stand until a judicial misconduct inquiry concludes.

The position follows a joint appeal by the Bar Council of England and Wales (BCEW) and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA), which argued the suspension undermined judicial independence.

In a sharply worded rebuttal, the Attorney General’s office asserted Ghana has acted within constitutional bounds. “Neither Latimer House Principles nor Ghana’s constitution prohibits suspending a Chief Justice once a prima facie determination of misconduct exists,” the statement read. It emphasized that halting the suspension now would itself violate constitutional procedures.

The controversy stems from an ongoing inquiry into alleged misconduct by Justice Torkornoo.

The Attorney General clarified the suspension is procedural, not punitive, and will lift only after the inquiry committee submits its final report to President John Mahama. “The President will adhere to the committee’s findings,” the statement noted, framing the process as a safeguard for judicial integrity rather than executive overreach.

International bodies had expressed concern the suspension could erode Ghana’s rule-of-law credentials. However, the government maintains its actions align with legal due process, balancing accountability and institutional stability.

For now, Justice Torkornoo’s suspension remains a flashpoint between domestic constitutional protocols and global judicial norms.

‘Sometimes allow the government to spend’ – Kennedy Agyapong on helicopter crash

0

PNP commends Mahama’s Fund for helicopter crash victims

The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others

The People’s National Party (PNP) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for launching a fund in memory of the eight personalities who died in the recent helicopter crash, aimed at sponsoring the education of their children.

However, the party has urged the government to broaden the scope of the initiative beyond the eight individuals.

National Chairperson of the PNP, Madam Janet Nabla, said the fund should be national in character and support the children of all Ghanaians who die while serving the state.

She conveyed the party’s condolences to the families of the men who lost their lives in the line of duty and acknowledged the President’s intention as a step in the right direction. But she argued that the measure is inadequate and unsustainable.

According to her, such funds risk being depleted, discontinued, or politicised, eventually reducing them to token gestures.

The PNP therefore rejects the creation of a temporary fund as the sole intervention and is instead calling for the urgent passage of the National Heroes Dependants Protection Act.

The proposed legislation, the party said, should establish a permanent, state-backed welfare system, funded through the Consolidated Fund and administered by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

Madam Nabla explained that the Act must provide a monthly stipend to widows to cater for their children and, where applicable, dependent parents.

She further stressed that the benefits should be protected from political interference and guaranteed regardless of which party is in power.

In addition, she proposed that the Act ensure educational support for the children of the deceased and priority employment opportunities for them in the public sector after completing tertiary education.

She emphasised that families of citizens who die in service to the nation must not be left at the mercy of politics or fading public sympathy.

Instead, she said, a strong and permanent legal framework is needed to honour their sacrifices for generations to come.

Prince William and Kate Middleton advised over ‘difficult’ family issue

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married since 2011 and share three children, and a royal expert said Prince Andrew and Prince Harry “should stand as a warning” for how they parent them

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been issued a warning by a royal expert

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been cautioned that Prince Andrew and Prince Harry “should stand as a warning” regarding how they ought to raise their own three children, according to a royal commentator.

The future king and his spouse are parents to three youngsters – Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and seven year old Prince Louis. George is set to follow in his father’s footsteps when he ascends to the UK throne.

However, royal experts at the Daily Mail suggested William and Kate are working to ensure his younger siblings don’t mirror the trajectories taken by Andrew and Harry as troublesome ‘spares’ in the Royal Family.

The publication’s Diary Editor revealed on the Palace Confidential podcast: “I think Andrew and Harry should both stand as a warning to Prince William and Catherine that how you treat that ‘spare’ is very difficult.

“We’ve seen in both cases I would say they’ve grown up with the wrong attitudes, with that bitterness, resentment from Harry, then in Andrew’s case that sort of weird entitlement.

Prince Harry and Prince William
Prince Harry and Prince William currently have a fractured relationship

“From everything we’ve heard, William and Catherine are making real efforts to avoid that but it is hard in that sense when winner takes all type of thing,” reports the Daily Express.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle dramatically stepped down as working royals in 2020 to carve out their own future in the United States. Harry has subsequently launched repeated attacks on his family through platforms including his explosive memoir Spare and the bombshell interview he and his wife gave to Oprah Winfrey.

Tensions continue to simmer between Prince Charles and his son, as well as the rest of the Royal Family.

Meanwhile, Prince Andrew stepped back from his royal duties following a disastrous Newsnight interview in 2019, where he attempted to clear his name amidst growing rumours about his connection to convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

In recent years, controversy has surrounded his occupancy of Royal Lodge, with Prince Charles seemingly eager to evict his brother, and his alleged ties to a Chinese spy.

Prince Andrew
Prince Andrew has proved problematic for the Royal Family

Palace Confidential drew comparisons between the attitudes of Prince Andrew and the Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward. Richard Eden suggested their differing personalities are due to “character” as “they’re different people and married different people”.

Edward’s friends reportedly said “he never changed that much, he’s not arrogant and always behaved in a positive way”. Richard also mentioned that Edward’s marriage to Sophie has been beneficial.

The Daily Mail’s Royal Editor Rebecca English added: “There’s an element of where you come in the pecking order. As a younger child, so moved away from the line of succession, unless there was a major disaster there was no chance he would ever become king.

“He’s growing up with different pressures, and as Richard says it does come down to personalities and the people around you.”

They walked together toward a platform marked “Alaska 2025,”where again the two leaders exchanged a handshake, posed for photographs; but as reporters shouted questions at Putin about a ceasefire and civilian casualties, the Russian president shrugged as if indicating he couldn’t hear them. American military aircraft—including fighter jets and what appeared to be a B-2 stealth bomber—thundered overhead.

Putin then joined Trump in the presidential limousine, ‘The Beast’. The two could be seen laughing inside.

What is The Beast ?

When not travelling aboard Air Force One or by helicopter on Marine One, US presidents are chauffeured in a heavily armoured presidential limousine known as “The Beast.”

‘The Beast,’ weighing 20,000 pounds and equipped with advanced security and communications systems, debuted during Trump’s first term in 2018 and reportedly cost $1.5 million to build. While it resembles an elongated Cadillac XT6, its chassis comes from a Chevrolet Kodiak truck.

Security features remain classified, but a report by NBC, suggests the vehicle has night-vision, tear gas launchers, electrified door handles, 3-inch-thick windows, and 8-inch armor plating—making it one of the most secure vehicles in the world.

Ghana Think Tank Urges Emergency Overhaul for Bleeding State Firms

0

State Owned Enterprises
State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs)

Ghana’s struggling State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) require immediate, disciplined intervention to avoid systemic collapse, policy think tank IMANI Africa warns.

Despite controlling vital national resources, entities like Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and Cocoa Processing Company (CPC) hemorrhage cash annually, sapping state coffers and threatening fiscal stability.

The World Bank’s latest economic update singled out SOEs like Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as key risks. IMANI’s analysis reveals GWCL loses half its water to leaks and illegal connections, while CPC faces unsustainable debt. Without urgent action, these critical service providers could unravel Ghana’s economic fabric.

First Aid: Stop the Bleeding

For GWCL, IMANI prescribes rapid metering in high-loss areas, replacing burst pipelines, and cracking down on illegal taps. “Close the leaks before funding growth,” the group insists. Similarly, CPC must freeze nonessential spending, prioritize profitable production lines, and negotiate breathing room from creditors. Delaying these steps, IMANI cautions, makes insolvency inevitable.

Bailouts with Strings Attached

Any state lifelines, like the proposed Afreximbank facility, must carry strict, public performance targets. “Conditional support protects Ghana’s fiscal anchor,” IMANI argues, demanding trackable KPIs to force accountability. Blanket rescues without reform would merely postpone disaster.

Smarter Systems, Private Discipline

Beyond emergency fixes, IMANI pushes for modernizing operations: digital billing, mobile payments, and piloting private partnerships for distribution zones. These technical shifts could plug revenue leaks while private expertise injects operational rigor.

Persistent losses have left SOEs “quietly insolvent long before balance sheets show collapse,” IMANI concludes. The path forward demands not just funding but fundamental restructuring. For millions relying on water, power, and cocoa services, the clock is ticking.

Ghana’s Chocolate Paradox: Abundant Cocoa, Scarce Local Bars

0

ghana chocolate
Ghana chocolate

Ghana’s position as the world’s second-largest cocoa producer is undisputed. Yet, for most of the year, finding a locally made chocolate bar on its own shelves proves surprisingly difficult.

Foreign visitors expecting to savor the fruits of Ghana’s famed cocoa often leave puzzled, confronted by empty spaces or imported brands instead of rich Ghanaian dark or creamy milk chocolate.

This scarcity vanishes dramatically every February. Supermarkets and gift shops overflow with beautifully packaged local chocolates like Kingsbite. Valentine’s Day and Ghana’s National Chocolate Day trigger a rush of production and marketing. For a few vibrant weeks, consumers enjoy neatly wrapped bars, artisanal treats, and themed gift boxes. Then, almost as quickly as it appeared, the diverse selection disappears again.

Why does this happen year after year? The pattern frustrates many, especially tourists who visit Ghana outside the February peak for conferences, business, or leisure. These travellers often seek authentic, locally made chocolate as the perfect souvenir or gift, willing to pay a premium. Instead, they frequently find only imported options during off-peak months, missing a unique taste of Ghana.

Production challenges offer part of the explanation. To avoid costly stockpiles in a warm climate where chocolate spoils without perfect storage, many local processors, including smaller artisan brands, ramp up output only for high-demand periods like Valentine’s. Maintaining consistent, shelf-stable supply year-round requires significant investment in capacity and storage that many lack.

The missed opportunity is clear. Well-packaged Ghanaian chocolate holds strong appeal. Kingsbite already enjoys recognition across West Africa. Newer players like Niche, Fairafric, and artisanal makers are innovating with premium flavours and sustainable cocoa sourcing. With reliable availability, these brands could secure prime spots in hotels, airports, duty-free shops, and online stores year-round.

Expanding the domestic chocolate market offers substantial economic benefits. It would capture more value from Ghana’s cocoa sector, reducing reliance on volatile raw bean exports. This shift could create more jobs in processing, marketing, and retail while boosting the international prestige of the “Made in Ghana” brand. Imagine Ghanaian chocolate holding its own against Belgian or Swiss confections.

For now, enjoying a true Ghanaian chocolate bar remains largely a seasonal experience, tied to Valentine’s or perhaps Christmas. But with focused investment in production, storage, and distribution, Ghana could transform its finest cocoa into a constant presence. For visitors eager to taste the country’s most famous export at its best, that change can’t come soon enough.

Sam George Warns Nigerian Movie Makers: Stop Using Insults to Promote Your Films

News Hub Creator10h

Ghanaian lawmaker Samuel Nartey George, popularly known as Sam George, has issued a stern warning to Nigerian entertainers, urging them to stop insulting Ghanaians as a means of promoting their movies.

Speaking passionately on the matter, the Member of Parliament expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend where some Nigerian filmmakers and actors allegedly use derogatory remarks about Ghanaians to generate hype and attention for their productions.

Sam George noted that while Ghana and Nigeria share deep cultural and historical ties, such tactics risk creating unnecessary tension between the two countries. He stressed that healthy competition in the creative industry should be based on talent, creativity, and respect, not insults or negative stereotypes.

The MP called on Ghanaian authorities, film bodies, and media houses to take a stand against any content that seeks to demean the country for publicity purposes. He further urged Nigerian industry stakeholders to encourage positive cross-border collaborations rather than divisive promotional gimmicks.

His statement has sparked debate on social media, with many Ghanaians backing his position, while some Nigerians argued that the remarks were taken out of context or were simply meant as humor. The controversy has reignited conversations about mutual respect and the portrayal of African nations in the entertainment industry.

Watch: President Mahama & VP Jane Naana Spotted With Heavy Security At Military Cemetery in Tse Addo

News Hub Creator8h

On Friday, August 15, 2025, President John Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang led a somber procession to the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo for the interment of six individuals who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. The ceremony marks a significant moment in the nation’s mourning process following the devastating incident that claimed the lives of eight people, including two high-profile government ministers.

The helicopter, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9, was en route to an event focused on combating illegal mining in the Ashanti region when it crashed into a forested mountainside, killing all on board. Among the deceased were Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, whose deaths have deeply affected the political landscape of Ghana. The crash, one of the worst air disasters in the country in over a decade, prompted an immediate investigation by the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies to determine the cause.

The interment ceremony was attended by a host of military personnel and dignitaries, reflecting the gravity of the occasion. President Mahama and Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, dressed in formal attire, walked a red carpet leading to the cemetery, symbolizing respect and honor for the fallen. The presence of armed guards and the solemn atmosphere underscored the nation’s collective grief and the ongoing efforts to pay tribute to the victims.

This event follows an earlier burial of two victims on August 10, 2025, as announced by President Mahama. The crash has not only resulted in a national period of mourning but also highlighted the risks associated with military and governmental operations. As investigations continue, the interment serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the need for enhanced safety measures in future endeavors. The Ghanaian government remains committed to supporting the families of the victims and ensuring a thorough understanding of the tragic event.

AG contests suspended Chief Justice’s court action against Shining Stars petition

0

The Office of the Attorney-General has moved to strike out a second judicial review application filed by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who is seeking to have one of three removal petitions against her dismissed.

The latest application, lodged on 23 June 2025, challenges a petition submitted by a group known as the Shining Stars of Ghana.

Lawyers for the suspended Chief Justice contend that the petition is invalid, arguing that the group is neither a registered entity nor identifiable by its membership.

However, Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai, representing the state, has rejected these claims, insisting they are unfounded and should not obstruct the committee established under Article 146 of the Constitution from carrying out its mandate.

In an affidavit sworn by State Attorney Reginald Nii Odoi, the AG’s office argued that “a body of persons—whether named or unnamed and, if named, by whatever designation—need not be incorporated or registered to exist at law.”

This marks Justice Torkornoo’s second attempt to use the High Court’s judicial review powers to halt the committee’s work.

Her earlier bid sought to have all three petitions struck out and to suspend the Justice Pawmang Committee’s sittings over alleged breaches of natural justice. That application was dismissed for being an abuse of court process and for lack of jurisdiction.

Although a related interpretation case is pending before the Supreme Court, an injunction arising from it was also refused, clearing the way for the Article 146 proceedings to continue.

In its latest response, the Attorney-General’s office maintains that the suspended Chief Justice’s arguments concern the internal proceedings of the Article 146 committee, which the Constitution stipulates must be conducted in camera.

It concluded that “the issues raised by the originating motion are not admissible in this Honourable Court,” reiterating its position that the High Court lacks jurisdiction over matters arising under Article 146.

Retired Air Force Officer Revealed The People Behind the Helicopter Crash

0

Accra, Ghana – Wing Commander (Retired) Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor has appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm and avoid speculation while investigations continue into the tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers. The retired Air Force officer emphasized the importance of waiting for official findings before drawing conclusions about the incident.

Speaking to Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, August 13, Mr. Sogbodjor highlighted that aviation investigations are often meticulous and time-consuming. He referenced a similar helicopter crash in the United States, where the official results of the probe were only released two months after the incident. “We must exercise patience and allow the experts to conduct a thorough examination,” he advised.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recently confirmed that they are awaiting reports from aviation experts and the aircraft manufacturer regarding the black box recovered from the crash site. These findings will be critical in determining the exact cause of the tragedy. Sogbodjor stressed that hasty conclusions based on speculation could lead to misinformation and unnecessary panic.

The August 6 helicopter crash claimed the lives of prominent figures, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator. Three crew members – Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – also perished in the crash.

Addressing public concerns about whether another helicopter should have been dispatched to the crash site, Sogbodjor urged understanding of operational protocols in emergency situations. “Decisions at such scenes are made based on safety, accessibility, and the resources available. It is not always feasible to send another aircraft immediately,” he explained.

The crash has plunged the nation into mourning, with citizens expressing grief over the loss of these key figures. In honor of the victims, a state funeral has been scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at Black Star Square in Accra, where family members, colleagues, and the general public will pay their final respects.

Sogbodjor’s call for patience resonates as Ghanaians await clarity on the cause of the crash. His advice underscores the importance of relying on verified information, trusting expert investigations, and avoiding speculation during national tragedies.

As the nation prepares for the state funeral, the emphasis remains on mourning responsibly while allowing the investigative process to unfold, ensuring that the lessons from this tragic event are fully understood and acted upon.

for the last six victims of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash.

With tears streaming down her face, she remembered her husband of 37 years as a devoted partner, father, and pillar of strength.

She recalled Dr Sarpong’s last phone call to her before the crash, where he said he was embarking on “a return journey.”

Holding onto that promise, she said, “I am still looking forward to welcoming you back home, my dear husband. Your departure news continues to cut through my head. It feels unreal, and I keep hoping you would walk back through the door.”

Paying tribute to his character, Hannah Sarpong described her late husband, Dr Samuel Sarpong, as a man of wisdom, compassion, and devotion.

With a trembling voice, she said, “You made our home a place of peace, a candle of light, a shelter of happiness. You cared for us with such gracious love and led us with a divine heart,”

Overcome with grief, she expressed the void his passing has left behind: “Your absence is a deep wound in my heart. Yet your love will forever comfort me.

The Rainforest Alliance Ghana has convened a high-level partners and stakeholders workshop in Accra, rallying sustainability managers, policymakers, private sector actors, and farmer representatives to chart a path toward more sustainable agricultural value chains and regenerative landscapes.

The workshop, held at the AH Hotel, Accra, introduced stakeholders to the Rainforest Alliance 2030 Strategy, the Sustainable Agriculture Standard Version 1.4, and its policy for West and Central Africa.

Participants included representatives from COCOBOD, the Forestry Commission, UNDP, private sector actors, farmer groups, and traditional authorities.

Founded in 1987, the Rainforest Alliance has been at the forefront of fostering biodiversity, enhancing climate resilience, and improving rural livelihoods.

In 2024 alone, its programmes reached more than 25 million hectares globally, with certified crops produced according to rigorous environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards.

Today, the organisation works in 62 countries, promoting sustainable land management and helping rural economies thrive, a proven strategy to safeguard tropical forests and restore biodiversity.

Opening the workshop, Rainforest Alliance Ghana Country Director Nicholas Jengre emphasised the importance of building stronger partnerships to deliver the organisation’s 2030 Strategy in Ghana. “Our vision is a world where people and nature thrive in harmony,” he said.

“Achieving this requires us to align our efforts, share lessons, and pool resources to drive transformational change across entire landscapes.”

Echoing this call, Nadège Nzoyem, Senior Director for West & Central Africa, urged greater regional collaboration to tackle shared sustainability challenges. “Sustainability is no longer an optional commitment, it is the foundation for future competitiveness, climate resilience, and inclusive growth,” she noted.

“The lessons and innovations emerging from Ghana’s cocoa and forest landscapes can serve as powerful models for the entire region.”

The programme featured sessions on Rainforest Alliance’s certification data in Ghana, an overview of the Sustainable Agriculture Standard Version 1.4, and spotlights on key landscape initiatives, including the Sui River and Savannah landscapes.

Discussions highlighted how integrated approaches to forest conservation, community engagement, and market linkages can drive net-positive outcomes for people and nature.

A panel session titled “Transformational Change for Net Positive Landscapes in Ghana” brought together representatives from the Forestry Commission, COCOBOD, UNDP, private sector, Rainforest Alliance, and farmer groups.

Speakers underscored the need for policy alignment, investment in regenerative practices, and capacity-building at the community level.

The workshop concluded with a renewed pledge from all stakeholders to deepen collaboration, scale solutions, and maintain open channels of communication.

Closing the event, Nana Kwabena Gyanfi Akwabeng, Abontendom Hene of Anhwiaso Traditional Authority called on participants to translate their commitments into tangible benefits for farmers and forest-dependent communities.

With nearly four decades of global impact and a strong track record in Ghana, the Rainforest Alliance is positioning itself, alongside its partners, to ensure that cocoa, forests, and landscapes can thrive together for generations to come.

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo responds to racial abuse with a brace against Liverpool on EPL opening weekend

Antoine Semenyo (R) scored twice despite racial abuse Antoine Semenyo (R) scored twice despite racial abuse

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo showed impeccable mentality on Friday night August 15, 2025, scoring a brace against Liverpool after he was racially abused by a fan on the opening weekend of the English Premier League.

The alleged abuse occurred midway through the first half when Semenyo was targeted by a fan, as he was attempting to affect a throw-in.

Rather than be rattled, the 24-year-old Black Stars striker channelled his emotions into an outstanding performance.

In the game kicking off the 2025/26 English Premier League season, Liverpool took control early on in the beautiful atmosphere created by the home fans.

New signing Hugo Ekitike pounced on a loose ball in the 37th minute inside the penalty area and fired into the bottom right corner to open the scoring.

Cody Gakpo doubled the Reds’ advantage in the 49th minute with a superb low strike from the edge of the box.

Bournemouth’s response began in the 64th minute when Antoine Semenyo reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, slotting home to cut the deficit.

Antoine Semenyo resumes pre-season with AFC Bournemouth after signing new contract

Twelve minutes later, the Ghanaian produced a moment of brilliance, drilling a precise strike from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom right corner to level the match.

Despite his outstanding performance, it was not enough to earn a point for AFC Bournemouth.

Liverpool struck late through goals by Federico Chiesa in the 88th minute and Mohammed Salah in added time to secure all three points at full-time.

Justin Bieber parties without Hailey AGAIN and smokes joint

0

Justin Bieber partied without his wife Hailey yet again Thursday, after they both enjoyed separate nights on the town Wednesday.

Over the past few months fans have been harboring concerns over Justin’s health owing in part to his gaunt, hollow-eyed appearance.

He has also been trailed by rumors of marital strife with his wife Hailey Bieber and has since alluded to their relationship problems on his new album, while also affirming his commitment to her and their one-year-old son Jack Blues.

This Wednesday, Justin, 31, swung by Gunna’s album release party in West Hollywood while Hailey, 28, indulged in a girls’ night in the same neighborhood.

However when he stepped out this Thursday, he kept away from the usual showbiz hot spots and opted for a lowkey venue off the beaten path.

In a new Instagram album he posted Friday, Justin could be seen smoking a joint the previous night outside the dive bar Dave’s on Broadway in the suburb Glendale.

First opened as a speakeasy in 1932 near the end of Prohibition, Dave’s is an unassuming neighborhood bar with events like karaoke and open-mic nights.

Justin’s new album included a suite of images of himself inside the bar, sitting with his male friends and getting one of the pool tables ready for a game.

His post concluded with a boomerang that showed the Baby singer, pool cue in hand, dancing joyfully in a circle near the table.

One night earlier, Justin paid a visit to the West Hollywood nightclub Zouk to attend album release party for Gunna’s latest project The Last Wun.

He was accompanied by his controversial longtime friend Kyle Massey, who shot to fame on That’s So Raven as the title character’s little brother Cory Baxter.

Kyle, 33, entered the headlines four years ago when he was charged with felony immoral communication with a minor over allegations he sent pornographic images to a 13-year-old girl, which he strenuously denied.

A number of other women then claimed to The Daily Beast that Kyle had communicated with them on social media when they were teenage high schoolers.

Kyle was sued in 2019 over similar allegations, but the action was dropped that year after the plaintiff’s lawyer withdrew from the case.

In 2015, Justin’s friend Lil Twist was slapped with a yearlong prison sentence for breaking into Kyle’s apartment and robbing his brother Chris Massey.

The scandals evidently have not rent the bond between the two men, who were pictured sitting close by in Justin’s Instagram album about Gunna’s party.

While Justin was out with Kyle this Wednesday night, Hailey was indulging in a girls’ night in the same neighborhood at the swank restaurant Alba.

She was accompanied by a claque of friends including Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and transgender model Alex Consani.

Although Justin addressed their marital issues on his new album Swag, he and Hailey have maintained a united front while he promotes the project.
