Broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has resigned as host of the ABN morning show

Ghanaian broadcaster, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has announced his resignation as the Morning Show Host of Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN), effective January 8, 2024.

In a post on Facebook, Afrifa-Mensah cited differences in interests between the management of the company and himself as the reason for his decision.

“I am resigning as the morning show host of Angel Broadcasting Network, effective immediately.

“This decision was made due to differences in interests between the management of the company and myself,” he shared.

Afrifa-Mensah expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve ABN and the Ghanaian public.

He also assured his fans and family that he would share his next move soon.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve ABN and the Ghanaian public. To my fans and family out there, I will share my next move soon,” he added.

This comes after rumors in December claimed that Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah had been dismissed from Angel TV, though neither Afrifa-Mensah nor Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN) officially confirmed it.

Afrifa-Mensah, known for his direct approach on the morning show “Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ,” has often sparked controversies.

His comments about some high-profile individuals, including Prophet Opambour and Nuumo Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, the Overlord of the Gadangme State, led to outrage and demands for an apology, which he refused, escalating tensions.

A popular Nigerian man of God, Pastor Obinna Michael, has predicted a great transformation for Ghana under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.

The minister, while reacting to the outcome of the elections on December 7, 2024, said Ghana and Rwanda would become the shining lights for the rest of the continent.

Speaking to his congregation, Pastor Obinna Michael said President Mahama would face some initial challenges in his bid to stabilise the economy but would receive divine help to overcome them.

The man of God also said the Ghanaian leader would face strong opposition from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in his attempt to transform the country.

“Ghana has done well. Ghana and Rwanda are going to become two nations that the African continent will learn from come 2025,” he prophesied. “The man that they [Ghana] have elected as the president is going to struggle to bring stability but he would be helped,” the pastor stated.

“His greatest fight and opposition is not the demon, but the party that he defeated. They are going to be his greatest undoing but in his heart and what God has shown me, the man is ready to bring stability to the nation of Ghana, and Ghana will come to the place where it’s supposed to be.”

Despite the strong opposition from the NPP, the revered man of God said President Mahama’s tenure in office would see great success and many from Ghana and beyond would marvel at the progress of the country.

Mahama sworn in as president of Ghana

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as the sixth president of the Republic of Ghana.

This came after the former leader was re-elected in a decisive manner after the general election polls on December 7, 2024.

Chaos erupted during the re-collation of election results in the Ablekuma North constituency on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, over the authenticity of pink sheets.

The exercise, meant to clarify results from some outstanding stations in the constituency triggered heated exchanges among polling agents and agents of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who accused the EC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of conspiring to rig the elections in favour of the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the Director of Elections for the NPP, Evans Nimako, emphasised the importance of adhering to legal procedures in resolving electoral disputes.

He reiterated that political parties had been directed to submit their copies of the Form 8A results, either in hard or soft copy, for verification by the EC.

According to him, this process is essential to maintain the integrity of the electoral outcomes.

“The public must allow the law to operate, we have 276 constituencies, of which 275 results have been declared. However, in Ablekuma North, seven polling stations are still pending due to unresolved issues,” he noted.

The EC temporarily suspended the collation process on Monday, January 6, due to unresolved issues concerning results from seven polling stations.

Out of 20 initially outstanding polling stations, presiding officers were able to authenticate 13 pink sheets submitted by the NPP.

This re-collation follows a High Court ruling that directed the EC to address the disputes and re-collate results in four constituencies, including Ablekuma North.

However, the process has only deepened tensions, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

President John Mahama received arousing welcome on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, when he began his first official working day.

A footage captured by JoyNews showed a convoy of about six luxury vehicles amidst heavy security pulling into his Cantonments office.

He was followed by key officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including his aide during the 2024 election campaign, Joyce Bawa Mogtari.

It is, however, unclear why Mr. Mahama was at his personal office and not at the Jubilee House.

The African Centre for International Affairs (AfriCIA) has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama on his election as President in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

The Centre said, “This remarkable victory is not only a testament to your enduring leadership and vision but also a reflection of Ghana’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles and good governance.”

A statement issued in Accra by Joseph Boateng, the Executive Director, AfriCIA said the Centre highly acknowledged the victory of the first-ever female Vice President of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

It said as an organization dedicated to advancing diplomatic excellence and fostering sustainable global governance in Africa, AfriCIA celebrated Ghana’s continued role as a beacon of democracy on the continent.

“Your election reaffirms the nation’s democratic credentials and inspires hope for a future marked by unity, justice, and progress,” it added.

The statement said, “We extend our best wishes for your administration’s success in upholding the values of justice, transparency, and accountability.”

It said the Centre trusted that their leadership would further reinforce Ghana’s commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development within the African continent.

Moreover, “we are confident that your policies will strengthen public trust in the democratic institutions that form the foundation of Ghana’s remarkable political heritage.”

AfriCIA looks forward to Ghana’s continued leadership in fostering regional cooperation through ECOWAS and the African Union (AU).

Kwesi Pratt Jnr is a veteran journalist

A veteran journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has raised concerns about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) public statements regarding their chances of winning the 2024 presidential election, despite internal surveys showing a different picture.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Pratt brought to attention an interview that took place months before the election, pointing out the NPP’s awareness of their electoral defeat.

“You (Randy Abbey) had a discussion with a very prominent person on the Bawumia campaign who actually admitted that about 10 months before the elections they knew that they were going to lose. Yes! And that their study had showed that their votes were appreciating.

“If they knew they were trailing, how did they get the gusto, you know, to be looking us in the face and to be telling us that we’re going to win, some claiming that by landslide and so on, when they knew that we’re trailing,” he said.

Kwesi Pratt went on to question the party’s confidence in claiming victory, pointing out the inconsistency between their internal data and public claims.

“My point is simply this, if they knew they were trailing, why did they get the gusto to be looking us in the face and telling us they were going to win, claiming that by landslide and so on. They knew they were trailing,” he indicated.

President John Dramani Mahama defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with 6,328,397 votes, which represented 56.55% of the valid votes, while Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Kwaku Azar, has expressed dissatisfaction with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s dismissal of his petition to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as reported by Ghana Web on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

In a Facebook post on January 6, 2024, Kwaku Azar criticized the president’s rejection of his petition, describing the decision as a “prima facie determination” based on initial impressions.

He disagreed with the ruling, stating, “We disagree with the president’s prima facie determination on our petition and will take additional steps for it to get a fair hearing.”

The petition, which was submitted by Azar, accused Chief Justice Torkornoo of misbehaviour and incompetence. However, in a statement issued by the presidency on the same day, Akufo-Addo, after consulting with the Council of State, rejected the petition.

The president concluded that the petition did not present a prima facie case justifying further action.

The statement emphasized that the allegations, which included claims of panel reconstitution, issuing practice directions, and constitutional breaches, lacked supporting evidence.

The president’s office noted that Azar had failed to provide credible documentation or factual evidence to substantiate his claims. Additionally, it affirmed that the practices cited were consistent with established law.

Kwaku Azar, however, remained resolute in his stance, asserting in a follow-up post, “Whatever is dismissed today will resonate tomorrow, standing as a testament to the enduring pursuit of justice.”

This statement indicates his intention to continue pushing for what he sees as a fair evaluation of his petition.

A former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has taken to social media to express his frustration over the vandalism of a statue of the late former President Prof John Evans Atta Mills at the former president’s resting place, the Asomdwee Park.

Visuals from the Asomdwee Park show the plaque of the statue, which named Koku Anyidoho as the person who donated the statue, removed.

The writings on the plaque before it was destroyed showed details of the late former president and the inscription “Donated by Samuel Koku Anyidoho”.

The plaque could be seen broken into pieces with the statue of the late Prof Mills, however, intact.

It is not clear who removed the plaque, but the Asomdwee Park is state property, intended to be the resting place of the country’s presidents who pass on.

Koku Anyidoho, in the post he shared on X on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, took solace in God over the destruction of the plaque.

“This just happened @ Asomdwe Park. My Bible tells me that ‘In All Things’ (not in some things), I should give thanks to God. I am also singing… ‘It is well with my soul’. To God be All the glory and my prayer is for God to continue blessing my beloved Homeland Ghana,” he wrote.

Accra, Jan 8, GNA – Agents of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ablekuma North Constituency have insisted on a re-run of the parliamentary election in the constituency, rejecting any other resolution.

Their demand follows continued expression of discontent over the validity of some of the Statements of Results (pink sheets) being used in the collation of results for the December 7 parliamentary elections.

Mr Vincent Obeng, the Returning Officer overruled the NDC’s objection, insisting that he would admit the results because they were valid.

The decision sparked a wild altercation at the collation centre.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Gladys Pinkrah, stated that the decision to call for a re-run of the parliamentary election rests with the Commission, not its officials.

Meanwhile, Mr. Evans Nimako, Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the EC to ensure the re-collation exercise is concluded.

International relations expert and security analyst, Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso, has defended the invitation of Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Capt Ibrahim Traoré, to the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of President John Dramani Mahama.

In an interview with News Central on TV3 on January 8, 2025, Dr. Danso explained that the invitation was rooted in Ghana’s foreign policy principles, particularly good neighbourliness.

“No country has the right to dictate the governance or ideology. If we invite the Head of State of another country, it is because one of the core principles of our foreign policy is good neighbourliness,” he added.

Dr. Danso further questioned the validity of arguments against the invitation by comparing it to international relations with countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Iraq, which may not align with Western democratic ideals but still maintain diplomatic relations with the United States.

“Are we saying that Saudi Arabia, which is a theocracy, or Iran or Iraq or Syria – any of those Middle Eastern countries which are not democratic in the sense of the democracy, we know that we can’t invite them? Why would America have a link with Saudi Arabia, for example, if indeed or Bahrain or Kuwait, even though they don’t have the type of democracy that America has? So, for me the argument is not here nor there. We have every right to invite Burkina Faso’s head of state because it is the head of state of Burkina Faso, and he has the sovereign right to be here.

“So, the debate is not whether we are a democratic country we should invite, or we shouldn’t invite. We are inviting him as Head of State, respected by his own people. His own people have not chosen him the way we chose ours, but his own people have confidence in him and he’s the head of state of the country anyway, whether you like it or not,” he noted.

Dr. Danso clarified that Burkina Faso’s participation in the inauguration did not have significant implications for Ghana’s governance.

He maintained that sovereign countries should be respected, regardless of their political circumstances.

“Ghana does not clone ECOWAS. They will say once you have left ECOWAS, we don’t have to have any dealings with you. Absolutely not. It is their own country and what they do with their country is not our concern. What concerns us is that there should be peace, economic, trade, and bilateral or political relations with any country that is in the world. That’s one of the pillars of our foreign policy,” he added.

Dr. Danso also suggested that the presence of Burkina Faso’s leader at the event could serve as a catalyst for enhancing diplomatic discussions within the ECOWAS region.

“But for the ECOWAS sub region and the conversations to have these countries return, I believe this and his appearance with the ECOWAS chair, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, all present yesterday will be a booster of some sort,” he explained.

Some critics have raised concerns regarding a security lapse during the inauguration of the president, where Ibrahim Traoré, reportedly armed, was allowed to approach Mahama to congratulate him.

They have questioned the adequacy of security protocols during high-profile events and whether such lapses could have significant consequences.

Following their swearing-in and subsequent presidential inauguration, Members of the 9th Parliament of Ghana will, as part of business for today, Wednesday, January 8, 2025, determine the formation and composition of membership for committees, delegations, groups, and associations to manage the activities of the House.

As listed in the Order Paper for the day, leaders of the Majority and Minority caucuses will make statements before the deliberation on the committees commences.
