Transport Fares Go Up By 20%

0

Inside a trotro

Public transport fares across the country are set to increase by 20 percent effective Friday, August 8, 2025, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced.

In a press release dated August 5, 2025, the GRTCC said the adjustment was necessitated by rising operational costs, including the introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy, increased maintenance costs due to poor road conditions, and what they described as a lack of corresponding price reductions in spare parts and services after a 15% fare reduction was implemented on May 21, 2025.

The fare increase will apply to shared taxis, intra-city (trotro) services, intercity (long-distance) travel, and haulage and cargo transport.

“We kindly request all commercial transport operators and companies to comply with the new fares and display them at their loading terminals,” the statement, jointly signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman of the Road Transport Operators, said.

COPEC/GPRTU Opposition

However, the announcement has been met with sharp opposition from the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) and some major transport unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), who insist that no such consensus has been reached on any fare increment.

Premature

In a counter statement, Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, dismissed the 20% hike as unjustifiable, arguing that prevailing fuel and spare parts prices do not warrant such a drastic upward review.

“Fuel prices dropped significantly between January and May 2025, from GH¢15 per litre to about GH¢11 – 12. Some unions even reduced fares by 15% voluntarily. The new GH¢1.00 levy cannot on its own reverse all those gains or justify this 20% increment,” COPEC stated.

Mr. Amoah further warned that the fare adjustment, if implemented without broader consultation, would disproportionately burden low-income commuters who rely heavily on public transport.

“We find it disturbing that a segment of the transport sector is attempting to increase fares without consensus. The largest transport unions have already indicated they are not part of this decision,” he added.

According to COPEC, its checks and the media reports also indicate that the GPRTU, which is one of the country’s largest transport unions, has not endorsed the proposed fare hike.

It added that some union leaders expressed surprise at the GRTCC’s announcement and called for further dialogue before any changes are made.

“The economic climate is tough for both drivers and passengers. We need to strike a balance and ensure decisions are well grounded, not arbitrary,” a union source reportedly told COPEC.

Road Toll Concerns

COPEC’s statement also referenced government’s attempts to reintroduce road tolls, suggesting that such policy changes, which could affect drivers’ expenses, require adequate stakeholder engagement before forming part of any fare negotiations.

“It is imperative to note that an intention which has not yet been enforced cannot and should not form the basis of any increment in transport fares,” Mr. Amoah cautioned.

“Ghanaians Abroad Have Halted Remittances’ – Bank of Ghana Reveals Impact of Cedi’s Strength

0

The recent surge in the value of the cedi has caused a significant decline in remittance inflows, with the Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, revealing a near 50% drop in remittances as reported by Citinewsroom.

The appreciation of the local currency, which has strengthened by over 40% against the US dollar, 31% against the British pound, and 24% against the Euro, is attributed to improvements in macroeconomic stability, falling inflation, and growing external reserves.

Dr. Asiama, speaking at the launch of the Bank of Ghana Chair in Finance and Economics at the University of Ghana, explained that while the cedi’s appreciation shows growing investor confidence, it is also leading to behavioral changes among the diaspora.

Many Ghanaians living abroad, who previously sent money for local projects, have now paused these remittances.

“The appreciation of the cedi so far, Ghanaians are interpreting this differently, and it is part of the problem,” Dr. Asiama said.

“People who used to send remittances for projects have suddenly stopped.”

This change in behavior has had a notable impact on the economy, as the once steady flow of remittances has slowed.

Despite the challenges, the Bank of Ghana is actively exploring ways to address the issue.

Dr. Asiama suggested that a roadshow in countries with large Ghanaian populations may help educate the diaspora on the benefits of continuing their remittance contributions.

He emphasized that even with the currency’s appreciation, the cost of local projects, such as building materials, should remain relatively stable due to falling inflation.

NPP Flagbearer Race 2 Aspirants Pick Forms

0

Kennedy Agyapong and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong

Two aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position have picked nomination forms to contest in the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

These individuals are the former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, Kwasi Kwarteng, said the nomination forms were picked by some Members of Parliament on behalf of the aspirant, including Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah, former Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, and Member of Parliament for Tema Central, Charles Forson.

Kennedy Agyapong’s decision to enter the race reaffirms his long-standing interest in leading the party, following his active participation in the NPP’s 2024 presidential primaries where he emerged second.

Other individuals who have declared their intention to contest for the party’s presidential primaries and are expected to pick the nomination forms are former Vice President and Flagbearer for the party in the 2024 election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Former Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, in a recent media interview, expressed confidence in the business mogul due to his business acumen, stressing that Mr. Agyapong could change the unemployment challenges facing the country.

In his view, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament is capable of leading the NPP to capture power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general election.

He said, “Youth unemployment is a big problem, and so far, people in business have demonstrated that they can do well,” and added, “Kennedy is the right candidate. I do believe that he has the answer to Ghana’s unemployment problem.”

The deadline for filing of the forms is August 28, 2025, as announced by the National Executive Council.

Daddy Lumba

The family of the late Ghanaian highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has announced that a one-week observance in honour of the iconic musician will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in Accra.

According to the head of the family, the final funeral rites will rather take place in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.

In a statement released through DL FM, the radio station owned by the late musician, the family noted that details regarding the exact venues for both the one-week ceremony and the funeral would be communicated to the public in the coming days.

Daddy Lumba passed away on Friday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. His death has plunged the nation into mourning, with thousands of tributes pouring in from fans, fellow musicians, political leaders, and cultural figures across Ghana and beyond.

As part of the commemorative activities, a candlelight vigil was held on Saturday, August 2, at Independence Square in Accra.

The emotional gathering drew thousands of fans and well-wishers, many of whom were clad in black and held lit candles and placards bearing messages such as “Rest in Power Lumba” and “Your Music Lives On.”

Participants sang along to some of his greatest hits and shared personal reflections on how his music had shaped their lives and touched generations. The vigil was a testament to Lumba’s enduring influence and the deep connection he shared with his audience.

Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians, Daddy Lumba’s career spanned over three decades. With a discography of more than 30 albums, his distinctive voice, lyrical depth, and genre-defining style left an indelible mark on the highlife music scene. Among his timeless classics are “Sika Asem”, “Biribi Gyegye Wo”, “Seese Wo”, “Sika”, “Makra Mo”, “Odo Asem”, “Opono Hini Me”, and the ever-popular “Aben Wo Ha”.

His musical legacy has been praised not only for its entertainment value but also for its cultural relevance and ability to capture the social realities of everyday Ghanaians.

The family called on the public to continue supporting them through prayers and solidarity as they prepare to lay the highlife icon to rest.

“The one-week observance will be held on August 30, while a date for the funeral will be communicated soon,” the family head said. “We appeal to Ghanaians to support us in giving Daddy Lumba a befitting burial.”

A 38-year-old unemployed man, Thomas Kwabena Vordzorgbe, has been sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Circuit Court in Accra, for robbing a Nigerian national of an Itelmobile phone valued at GH¢350.

The sentence was handed down on Monday, August 4, 2025 by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, after a full trial in which the accused was found guilty of robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

GH¢376m NIA debt invalid without regulatory approval

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has strongly refuted claims by the National Identification Authority (NIA) that it owes over GH¢376 million in arrears, an allegation the NIA says led to the disconnection of GRA from its Identity Verification Service (IVS) platform.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 5, the GRA expressed “great surprise” at the NIA’s assertions and insisted that the purported debt lacks the necessary regulatory and governance backing to be considered legitimate.

According to the Authority, its internal assessments revealed that the alleged debt is a legacy liability stemming from transactions carried out before 2025. However, GRA maintains that those engagements did not receive the required formal approvals.

“GRA’s principles of transparency, compliance, and governance protocols do not permit enforcement of transactions that do not meet regulatory requirements,” the statement read.

The Authority also highlighted its long-standing support for the NIA, stating that the Identification Authority has, for years, operated desks at GRA offices nationwide to register individuals and issue Ghana Cards without making any payments for rent or utilities.

The Authority further explained that high-level discussions are currently underway to resolve the matter, especially since it has uncovered procedural breaches and cannot verify the existence of a formal service agreement between the two parties.

Despite the disagreement, GRA reaffirmed its commitment to inter-agency cooperation. “We recognise the importance of collaboration in advancing national development goals, including integrating the Ghana Card into the tax system,” the statement noted.

My stepmother wants to hand over my dad’s company to my stepsister

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 24-year-old woman and I’m the 2nd born of my parents. I lost my mother in a tragic accident three years ago.

My dad had a child with another woman years ago and my mother was aware of it before she died. My dad then decided to marry that particular woman.

I now live with my dad, his new wife and the daughter. The woman doesn’t like me and I try as much as I can to avoid her.

My dad owns a prestigious company, which my elder sister used to run. She handed it over to me when she got married and relocated abroad.

Over two years, I’ve been the one handling everything and my dad was always proud of a me.

Three months ago, my dad fell ill. He couldn’t move or do anything on his own.

Last month, he gave up on himself and begged me to take good care of his properties and company.

Ever since my dad died, this woman has been maltreating me. I never think about them because I was busily running the company.

I woke up one morning, getting ready for work and my stepmother said I should start clearing my desk because she wants my stepsister to take over dad’s company. I didn’t say anything and I left, thinking she was just kidding.

Last three days, my stepsister came around and started ordering the staff around. She introduced herself as the new CEO and asked me to either work under her or clear my desk. I couldn’t take it so I rushed home to talk to my dad’s lawyer.

I don’t know what my stepmother discussed with the lawyer because he didn’t want to involve himself.

How can I just fold my arms and watch them reap where they didn’t sow? I’ve worked so hard in this company for it to be taken from me just like that.

At this point, I’m not thinking straight. I’m confused on what to do and who to talk to. What should I do?

Kofi Ofosu Nkansah breaks silence on contracting Kevin Taylor to ‘destroy’ Ken Agyapong

0

Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has responded to allegations that he contracted political commentator Kevin Taylor, who doubles as the host of With All Due Respect on Loud Silence TV, to sabotage the 2023 campaign of Kennedy Agyapong, an NPP flagbearer hopeful.

According to Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the claims are entirely false, and he has never contacted Kevin Taylor in any way to carry out such an agenda.

Speaking in an interview on Movement TV on August 5, 2025, Nkansah clarified that although he did not support Kennedy Agyapong’s bid for the NPP flagbearership, instead supporting former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, he would never attack or speak against Agyapong.

“I respect Kennedy Agyapong so much, and I won’t speak against him. Even though I didn’t support his bid, I would never do such a thing because we are all members of the same party, and we will need each other for the general elections,” Nkansah explained.

“So, the assertions that I contracted Kevin Taylor to destroy Kennedy Agyapong are completely false. I haven’t done such a thing, and I won’t do that.”

He further clarified that Kevin Taylor made certain comments back in 2023 during the NPP internal campaign period, and those comments are now being used to create a false narrative against him.

“Kevin Taylor made those statements in 2023, during the campaign period, and some people are now using that to fabricate stories against me,” he added.

Chaos on Nsawam-Pokuase road as floods stall vehicles, trap commuters

0

A torrential downpour between the night of Tuesday, August 5, and the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, has left sections of the Nsawam-Pokuase Road severely flooded, rendering parts of the highway nearly impassable.

The early morning commute on Wednesday was marred by chaos, as floodwaters engulfed large portions of the road, stalling traffic and leaving several vehicles submerged. Stranded commuters and frustrated drivers were forced to navigate through stagnant water, with some cars seen partially sunk or billowing vapour due to engine overheating.

Eyewitnesses described the situation as dangerous and deeply frustrating. “We’ve been stuck here for hours. Some cars just died in the water. It’s not safe, and we go through this every time it rains,” one driver lamented.

Residents and motorists who spoke to Channel One News appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama to take urgent steps to rehabilitate the road and improve drainage infrastructure along the route. Many expressed concerns that without swift intervention, the road’s condition would continue to deteriorate, posing even greater risks to lives and property.

The Nsawam-Pokuase stretch is a critical link between Accra and the Eastern Region, and frequent flooding has long plagued its users during the rainy season.

DSTV must reduce prices over outdated content – Nana Yaa Jantuah

0

A Presidential Staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has thrown her weight behind calls for MultiChoice, operators of DStv, to reduce their subscription prices in the country.

Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews on Tuesday, Ms Jantuah echoed sentiments earlier expressed by Communications Minister Sam George, stating that DStv’s high subscription fees are unjustified given the dated nature of much of its content.

“I agreed with the Minister, they (DStv) should reduce their prices because their content is even horrible. I keep DStv in my home because of the men in my house,” she said.

“Sometimes when you look at the summary of the film, 1978, apart from the African Magic content, all the foreign content is old,” she added.

The call for price reduction follows widespread outcry on social media and in Parliament after MultiChoice Ghana implemented new tariff rates in July 2025. Many subscribers lamented that the platform’s premium pricing does not reflect the quality or freshness of the content on offer.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, speaking at the Government’s Accountability Series, issued a stern ultimatum to DSTV, warning that the broadcaster’s licence will be suspended by Wednesday, August 7, should it fail to reduce its subscription prices in for Ghanaians in line with regulatory expectations.

He argued that the company’s operations must be aligned with Ghanaian consumer interests and not driven solely by profit.

Following that, MultiChoice in a statement on Sunday, August 3, described the Minister’s comments as regrettable, particularly given the company’s ongoing efforts to engage in open and constructive dialogue with the Minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA) over the matter.

Meanwhile, the minister has reaffirmed his commitment to pursue regulatory measures against the company, insisting that their services are unfair and that excessive subscription charges are imposed on Ghanaian consumers.

Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative welcomes Ghana’s cocoa price hike

Alex Assanvo is the Executive Secretary of CIGCI Alex Assanvo is the Executive Secretary of CIGCI

The Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI) has lauded Ghana on its official opening of the 2025/2026 cocoa season and the announcement of an increase in the producer price for the crop season.

In a statement released by the initiative on August 5, 2025, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, CIGCI emphasised that the new price of US$5,040 per tonne, up from US$3,100, marks a record high and demonstrates Ghana’s continued commitment to ensuring fair compensation for its cocoa farmers.

CIGCI said the move reinforces the shared vision of its members to build a fairer, more resilient, and sustainable cocoa economy.

It, however, extended its appreciation to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for the decisive action contributing meaningfully to ongoing regional efforts to transform the cocoa sector.

Over the past four years, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, together accounting for more than 60% of global cocoa production, have coordinated policies on farmgate pricing, market transparency, and value distribution.

“Since 2019, amid a volatile cocoa economy with market prices often falling below production costs, the two countries have worked closely to correct deep-seated market failures that disadvantaged farmers. A fair price is the first milestone toward a sustainable cocoa sector,” it stated.

CIGCI, however, reaffirmed its commitment to working with governments, industry partners, and stakeholders to make cocoa the world’s first truly sustainable commodity, one that is environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially just.

BoG’s quarter-ounce gold coin moves to sell at GH¢9,831.30 on August 6

Bank of Ghana's gold coin Bank of Ghana’s gold coin

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced these gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, ultimately aiming to strengthen the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,831.30.

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,940.70.

• The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢37,202.64.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and can be purchased through commercial banks.

GH¢1 million club support is from government – George Afriyie ‘clashes’ with GFA

0

George Afriyie is a former GFA Vice President George Afriyie is a former GFA Vice President

George Afriyie, a former Vice president of the Ghana Football Association, has reacted to the controversy surrounding the GH¢1 million support promised to each club competing in the 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season.

According to George Afriyie, the GH¢1 million support promised to each club was a fulfilled campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama, hence the presence of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, at the unveiling of the Adesa Productions and GFA partnership on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Afriyie’s comment comes on the back of the statement made by Prosper Addo and Henry Asante Twum, the General Secretary and Director of Communications respectively, at the GFA that the money promised to clubs is not from the government.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, George Afriyie stated emphatically that the GH¢1 million support promised to each club is rather from the government.

“We know how sponsorships are announced in this country and we know that the sports ministry and GFA doesn’t collaborate on sponsorship announcements.

“The money is coming from the government. They are just fulfilling a campaign promise they made last year. That is why the Chief of Staff and the Majority Leader were present during the announcement,” George Afriyie said.

Gorillas seek out old female friends even after years apart

0

Female gorillas appear to maintain their social relationships for many years Female gorillas appear to maintain their social relationships for many years

The relationships built up between female mountain gorillas are more important than previously understood, new research from Rwanda suggests.

It shows that when one of these social great apes moves into a new group, she will seek out and join another female she already knows.

Scientists based the research on 20 years of data covering multiple groups of gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, in Rwanda.

The scientists found that even when two females had been apart for many years, a newly arrived gorilla would still try to join a female she had formed a previous connection with.

The findings, published in the Royal Society Journal Proceedings B, show how important the relationship between two individual females is in gorilla society.

“Scientifically, I don’t know if I can talk about ‘friendship’,” explained lead researcher Victoire Martignac, a PhD researcher form the University of Zurich. “But we’re showing here that these same sex relationships really matter.”

Moving into different groups is key in shaping the animals’ social structure. It’s something that both males and females do – females will sometimes move several times throughout their lives.

This dispersal, as it’s known, plays a role in avoiding inbreeding, spreading gene diversity and shaping social relationships.

“In the wild it is very important,” explained Ms Martignac.

“But it’s extremely hard to study, because once individuals leave a group, it’s hard to keep track of them.”

Working in partnership with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, at a field site that has been monitored since 1967, Ms Martignac and her colleagues were able to track those movements.

Poring through decades of information on the animals’ lives, the scientists followed the “dispersals” of 56 female mountain gorillas – examining which new group they chose to join and why.

The gorillas avoided groups that had males they were likely to be related to, but the presence of females they knew also “mattered a lot”, Ms Martignac explained.

The females gravitated towards their “friends”, even if the animals had been apart for many years.

They would often gravitate to a group with females they had grown up with, even if that was many years ago. They also sought out individuals with whom they had made a social connection – perhaps played and interacted with – recently.

Ms Martignac explained that the gorillas would invest in these relationships because they deliver key social benefits.

“New arrivals usually start at the bottom of the social hierarchy,” she said. “Resident females can be pretty aggressive towards them, because they’re potentially a competitor.”

Moving around is something that is also crucial in shaping human society. And the researchers say that studying its roots in other great apes can shed light on the evolutionary driving forces behind it.

“Movement is a huge part of the way we live,” said Ms Martignac. “But those decisions do not fossilise.

“So we look at them in our closest evolutionary cousins.”

This new insight into gorillas’ social lives, she added, “reframes how we think of female-female social relationships”.

“They’re much more important to these animals than we used to think.”

Stonebwoy trends after Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini is seized by EOCO

0

Ghanaian Afrodancehall star Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, is trending on social media following the seizure of fellow musician Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini Urus by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

The development has rekindled an old comment made by Stonebwoy, drawing him into the centre of online discussions.

The controversy began after EOCO issued a statement confirming the seizure of a Lamborghini Urus belonging to Charles Nii Armah Mensah, known in showbiz as Shatta Wale.

The car is allegedly linked to a transnational stolen vehicle syndicate spearheaded by 31-year-old Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a 7-year jail term in the United States.

According to EOCO, Shatta Wale and a former senior officer of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) have been identified as “persons of interest” in the ongoing investigation.

Though the NSB official was unnamed in EOCO’s statement, it has been widely speculated that the individual is the embattled former NSB boss, Kwabena Adu Boahene.

He is suspected of purchasing another high-end vehicle that appears on a list of cars wanted by the FBI and the US Department of Justice.

Social media users have resurfaced a past interview in which Stonebwoy described Shatta Wale as a “settings man”, a Ghanaian slang term implying someone who relies on behind-the-scenes arrangements or manipulations.

Many citizens have interpreted this old remark as eerily fitting the current situation, sparking widespread reports and memes across platforms like X.

The controversy further deepened after Stonebwoy shared a photo of himself online, which some fans and critics perceived as a subtle dig at Shatta Wale.

Ghana Parliament Adjourns Session Amid Bipartisan Recognition and Lingering Tensions

0

Parliament

Speaker Alban Bagbin commended lawmakers for demonstrating rare unity across partisan lines as Ghana’s Ninth Parliament concluded its second meeting.

In a closing address delivered by First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu, Bagbin praised members for transcending political divides to serve public interests during the 43-sitting session. “This meeting has shown what’s achievable when we prioritize collective good over party agendas,” he stated, urging sustained cooperation.

Between May and August 2025, the legislature passed eight critical bills including the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and University for Development Studies legislation. Members filed 497 parliamentary questions—297 answered—while approving seven Supreme Court justices, four deputy ministers, and international agreements. Timber contracts and Auditor-General’s reports also received adoption during the productive period.

The session faced significant challenges, notably the death of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi and violent clashes during Ablekuma North’s by-election. Bagbin called for improved healthcare provisions for legislators and stronger electoral safeguards. As Parliament adjourned until October, he reminded members that recess constitutes a return to constituents, not a break from democratic duties.

Contrasting perspectives emerged from party leaders. Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin highlighted anti-illegal mining efforts: 1,300 arrests and 425 excavator seizures. He defended state agencies investigating political figures against “hypocritical” criticism. Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson countered with warnings about “creeping authoritarianism,” urging reconciliation: “We must end this season of bitterness, revenge and pain.”

White Senator Styles For Fashionable Men To Rock To Special Occasion

0

White Senator styles have emerged as a top choice for fashion-forward men who want to exude class and sophistication at special events. Rooted in Nigerian traditional fashion, the Senator outfit is a refined ensemble that blends heritage with contemporary design. It typically features a long, tailored tunic worn over matching trousers, often adorned with subtle embroidery or detailed stitching.

Ideal for weddings, naming ceremonies, formal parties, and other important occasions, the white Senator suit has become a symbol of elegance and distinction. The color white, often associated with purity, peace, and prestige, adds an aura of grace and refinement to the wearer. Its neutral base also provides the perfect canvas for creative styling, allowing men to personalize their outfits with accessories, patterns, or accents in contrasting colors.

To elevate the look, many men opt for Senator tunics with detailed embroidery in gold, black, or silver, which adds richness without being overpowering. For those who prefer a more understated appearance, a plain white version paired with classic accessories such as leather shoes, watches, or cufflinks delivers timeless appeal.

The success of any Senator outfit also depends on the quality of the fabric and the precision of the tailoring. Premium materials like cotton, cashmere, or brocade not only provide comfort but also give the attire a structured, polished look. COCOBOD’s inefficiency fueling Cocoa production decline – Kosi Dedey

0

Engineer and policy analyst, Kosi Dedey, has urged the nation to move beyond partisan politics and confront the systemic inefficiencies within the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), which he says are contributing to the steady decline in cocoa production.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, August 6, he underscored that COCOBOD, established with the mandate to coordinate and protect the interests of cocoa farmers, has strayed from its core purpose, a situation he believes demands urgent national attention.

“I think that COCOBOD was established for a certain purpose, which is to coordinate the affairs of the farmers so that Ghana can get value for money. We should not treat this as an issue of politics.

“We should look at the national interest and say, how do we look at COCOBOD and improve the efficiency at COCOBOD? Because it is responsible for what is happening at the moment,” he stated.

Kosi Dedey stressed that the country must adopt a dispassionate and objective approach in addressing the challenges facing COCOBOD, warning that political blame games between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will only worsen the situation.

“It shouldn’t be an issue of NDC or NPP,” he added. “We should dispassionately look at the issue of COCOBOD and how to improve its efficiency.”

His concerns come at a time when Ghana’s cocoa production has seen a notable dip, raising alarm about sustainability in one of the country’s most critical export sectors.

While the government recently announced a new producer price of US$5,040 per tonne for the 2025/2026 season, a 62.58% increase, experts say pricing alone will not resolve the deeper operational issues at COCOBOD.

George Afriyie to petition President Mahama to stop Kurt Okraku’s third term bid

L-R: Kurt Okraku, President Mahama and George Afriyie are involved in GFA's third term conversation L-R: Kurt Okraku, President Mahama and George Afriyie are involved in GFA’s third term conversation

Football administrator, George Afriyie, has said he will petition President John Dramani Mahama over the Ghana Football Association (GFA)’s bid to extend the presidential term limit for Kurt Okraku to remain in office.

According to him, extending the GFA presidential term limit to three terms does not augur well for football in the country, as it would give too much power to one individual for an extended period.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM on August 6, 2025, Afriyie fumed that the GFA should be concerned with elevating the standards of football in the country rather than occupying the position for an extended period.

“Why don’t we think about doing things right to get Kotoko and other local clubs to play in the FIFA Club World Cup? Instead, he [Kurt Okraku] is thinking about a third term. This worries me, so I will write to the government and the President of Ghana because he is the highest spender on football in the country. I will do that and copy the media as well,” he said.

Afriyie, who had contested for the GFA presidential position in the past, criticised Okraku for seeking to reverse a decision by the Normalisation Committee on the two-term limit when he had earlier agreed with it.

“The Normalisation Committee has brought us this far. Kurt was part of us when we accepted the proposal from FIFA statutes, which stated that we would align the presidency with that of the constitution of Ghana. Other countries attempted this and failed. The former Kenya FA president, after two terms, wanted to change the statutes and run for another term, but it didn’t work,” he added.

This development comes after FIFA approved the GFA’s proposal to extend the presidential term to three terms, with Okraku reportedly likely to run again.

Ghana Central Bank Slashes Policy Rate in Surprise Move Amid Economic Shifts

0

Bank Of Ghana
Bank Of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana has cut its benchmark Monetary Policy Rate by 300 basis points to 25%, defying market expectations in a decisive shift toward stimulating growth.

Five of six Monetary Policy Committee members backed the aggressive reduction, citing plunging inflation (13.7% in June from 23.8% in December 2024), a 40.7% year-to-date cedi surge, and reserves covering five months of imports.

They argued Ghana’s rebounding fundamentals including a budget deficit at 0.7% of GDP justified easing despite real interest rates remaining above 11%.

A lone dissenter advocated a more cautious 250-basis-point cut to 25.5%, warning of lingering risks: potential utility tariff hikes, global oil volatility, and fragile credit growth.

“Premature loosening could undermine gains,” the member cautioned, though all six signaled openness to further cuts if third-quarter inflation declines continue.

The rare public vote breakdown reveals a nuanced pivot. While majority confidence in macroeconomic stability drove the cut, the minority’s restraint underscores recovery remains nascent.

The move has already lowered the Ghana Reference Rate, with banks expected to transmit savings to borrowers gradually. Crucially, the MPC unanimously endorsed forward guidance to anchor market expectations, signaling cautious optimism as Ghana transitions from crisis management to growth support.

Watch as furious Yaa Naa turns away Energy Minister Jinapor over NEDCo impasse

0

John Jinapor (close to the man wearing white clothing) kneels, begging the Yaa Naa for forgiveness John Jinapor (close to the man wearing white clothing) kneels, begging the Yaa Naa for forgiveness

The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, could not hold back his frustration over the impasse between residents of his kingdom and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) when the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, went to beg for forgiveness over the matter.

A video of the incident showed Jinapor, at the Gbewa Palace, explaining the issues behind the impasse, which has left several communities in the Northern Region without electricity, as he begged for forgiveness.

The energy minister was captured in the video telling the Yaa Naa the steps he has taken to resolve the impasse, including engaging the workers of NEDCo, who have laid down their tools because they were attacked by residents and one of the chiefs in the Northern Region.

He also told the Yaa Naa that the steps he has taken have led to some progress, and the king’s intervention would help bring the matter to a finality.

“In all this, our overlord is my father. I cannot come and be looking for a solution and I won’t come to where the solution lies. When I came, we went to the Kug Naa Palace first, and he gave me some displeasing information. So, I apologise profusely to him.

“And on that note, I want to hold my grandfather’s legs and apologise to him for all that happened. I am very, very sorry for whatever has happened… I sincerely apologise to him. Because of the earlier communication that came, my understanding and the government’s understanding was that everything was okay,” he said.

He added that; “My mission is very simple: to get the workers back, and then they will switch the light on again in Tamale — we can’t continue to sleep in darkness — and also to plead with my father.”

The minister’s suggestion that the lights were switched off did not sit well with the Yaa Naa, who could be heard expressing his frustrations.

The king of Dagbon said that the people who are sleeping in darkness are the very people who voted the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) into power.

“Those who are sleeping in the darkness are those who have given you the power. I’m not going to say anything,” the king fumed, as the minister was still begging him.

The king, who sounded very angry, then said that Jinapor, who is a royal, is now in power and is doing nothing to put on the light for the people who voted his party to power.

Jinapor then retorted, “Beg my father for me that the light is on.”

Some of the sub-chiefs could also be heard saying that the lights were not on, as claimed by the minister.

The Overlord of Dagbon went on to discharge the energy minister and his entourage.

Some people could be heard urging the minister to kneel down and beg the king, which he did for minutes before they were all led out of the chief’s presence, who was still fuming.

Transport fares will not and cannot be increased by 20% – COPEC

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has rejected the transport fares hike announced by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

According to COPEC, the proposed fare hike is unjustifiable given the current economic pressures on ordinary Ghanaians.

Duncan Amoah, the Executive Secretary of COPEC, revealed that his checks from the transport unions and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) indicate no decision has been made to increase fares by 20 per cent on Friday, August 8.

Evatex Logistics Limited threatens to sue Ghana Airports Company

0

A private company, Evatex Logistics Limited, has threatened to sue the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) following the termination of the revenue assurance contract between the two entities.

In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of GACL, Evatex issued a seven-day ultimatum to the GACL to rescind the termination or face legal action.
Evatex, through its lawyers, described the termination as “unreasonable and actuated by bad faith.”

Termination

On July 28, 2025, the GACL terminated the revenue assurance agreement audit agreement signed with Evatex on December 4, 2024.

A letter signed by the Managing Director of GACL, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, directed Evatex to vacate the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) cargo terminal by August 27, 2025.

“Effective 27th August, 2025, the agreement executed on 4th of December, 2024 shall cease to have effect and shall be considered as terminated by GACL.

“You are, therefore, required to use this notice period to demobilise and leave the premises of Kotoka International Airport on or before 27th August, 2025,” the letter stated.

According to the letter, GACL relied on a clause in the revenue assurance agreement that allowed a party to terminate the agreement without any justification, provided the party served a one-month written notice to the other party.

Response

However, in its response, dated July 28, 2025, Evatex, per its attorneys, K-Archy & Co, said it was shocked by GACL’s decision to terminate, insisting it had already commenced operations, submitted reports for action, and had invested a total of $64.6 million in infrastructure tailored specifically to GACL’s requirements.

“In the spirit of seeking an amicable settlement of the matter, our client instructs us to inform you to withdraw the said letter within seven days upon receipt of this letter.

“We are further instructed that if upon the expiration of the seven days, you fail or refuse to withdraw the said letter, we have our client’s full instruction to institute an action to vindicate its rights and seek reliefs including but not limited to its capital investments stated supra,” he said.

Background

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) last week charged and detained the former Board Chairman of GACL, Paul Adom-Otchere, the Group Executive, Commercial Services, GACL, Otchere Kwame Baffour Awuah, and the Chief Executive Officer of Devnest Systems, Albert Adjetey Adjei-Laryea, over a revenue assurance contract between GACL and EVATEX.

The OSP said in a statement that it was examining possible procurement breaches, including a sole-sourced contract awarded to a company other than the one approved by the GACL Board.

Ghana Boosts Cocoa Support with Free Inputs and Price Hike

0

Cocoa
Cocoa

Ghana will provide free farming supplies to cocoa growers nationwide starting this season, aiming to revitalize production.

The package includes fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, spraying machines, and flower inducers, distributed at no cost.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the measure, stating it would reduce costs and raise yields for farmers. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the sector’s competitiveness.

Simultaneously, the government raised cocoa’s producer price by 62.58% in U.S. dollar terms, from $3,100 to $5,040 per tonne. This fulfills President John Mahama’s pledge to return 70% of the Free-On-Board value to farmers, based on the current $7,200 per tonne global price. The adjustment took effect on August 7, 2025.

However, the local currency equivalent saw only a 4.15% increase, from GH₵49,600 to GH₵51,660 per tonne. The Finance Ministry attributed this disparity to the Ghana cedi’s recent strength. While the robust currency benefits the economy broadly, it moderated gains for cocoa farmers in cedi terms.

Officials noted they had maintained the previous local price of GH₵49,600 per tonne since early 2025 despite the cedi’s appreciation. This effectively shielded growers from exchange-rate losses. Dr. Forson revealed the approach temporarily raised farmers’ share of export revenue to over 99%, a significant rise from 63.9% under the prior administration. The Ministry urged farmers to use the new inputs responsibly to maximize productivity.

Ghana’s EOCO Targets Shatta Wale For Probe As Shady Connection To Ex-Signals Officer Sparks Tension

0

Shatta Wale may soon find himself sitting in front of investigators, not for a performance or a music deal, but to answer serious questions from EOCO. The Economic and Organised Crime Office has reportedly assessed him, along with a former officer from the Signals Bureau, as persons of interest. The word “invited” is being used, but in situations like this, everybody knows it means more than just a friendly conversation. It means there are questions, and they believe you may have answers.

The EOCO Boss has made it clear that the dancehall artist and the former Signals Bureau officer are not being targeted randomly. They didn’t just pick names out of a hat. There is a reason these two have come up, and now the public is waiting to find out what exactly EOCO wants from them. For Shatta Wale, a man used to fame and controversy, this is another heavy situation that adds to his growing list of public dramas—but this time, it’s not about music.

Being called a person of interest is not the same as being accused of a crime, but it does mean you’re linked somehow to something under investigation. The questions now being asked are loud and heavy: What could EOCO be looking into that ties both Shatta Wale and a former intelligence officer together? What connection do they share, and why now?

Many people know Shatta Wale doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind or posting boldly on social media. He’s always in the middle of something loud. But being pulled into a crime investigation is a different level entirely. It suggests that something he has done, said, or someone he has associated with has drawn the attention of people who don’t play games.

The part that makes the situation even more serious is the mention of the former Signals Bureau officer. That’s not an ordinary title. The Signals Bureau is part of Ghana’s intelligence structure. If a former officer from that place is being linked to something that EOCO is investigating, then this could go very deep. You don’t just link a celebrity and a former spy-like figure for no reason.

It’s not clear yet what specific issue EOCO is looking into, but the phrase “to be invited soon” sounds gentle, even though the meaning isn’t. Once you’re invited to EOCO, the questions come hard and fast, and you better have answers that make sense.

People online have started talking. Some are defending Shatta Wale already, saying he’s always being dragged into things because he’s loud and famous. Others believe there might be something serious behind the scenes, and this could be the beginning of something much bigger.

For now, Shatta Wale has not commented on the matter. But the clock is ticking, and EOCO doesn’t forget names they assess as persons of interest. It’s no longer just a rumour—Shatta Wale and the former Signals Bureau officer will be facing questions soon, and the country will be watching very closely.

I would have died from sneezing due to the mentioning of my name in the past 2 weeks- Charlotte Osei

News Hub Creator19h

Former Electoral Commission Chairperson, Lawyer Charlotte Osei, has addressed the unexpected attention her name has received amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo. The situation has sparked intense debate, particularly from supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who have drawn parallels between her removal and the current petitions filed against the Chief Justice.

Many within the NDC argue that since Charlotte Osei was removed from office during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure without what they believe to be solid precedent, President Mahama has every right to explore legal avenues to investigate or act upon similar petitions. Conversely, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) argue that the suspension of the Chief Justice—while a constitutional review of the matter is still pending—reflects a worrying disregard for judicial independence.

The NPP claims the move is politically motivated, accusing President Mahama of using the situation as a means to gain control over the judiciary rather than pursuing genuine accountability. The issue has quickly evolved into a broader political contest between both major parties.Reacting humorously but pointedly, Charlotte Osei acknowledged the resurgence of her name in the national conversation. Taking to Facebook, she referenced a common African proverb that links sneezing to being mentioned in one’s absence, saying, “I can confirm this is absolutely not true. Because like the past two weeks, I would have died from sneezing! Ebeiiiii.” Her comment, while lighthearted, signals the intense public scrutiny she’s faced once again.

Ghana debates state honours for music legend Daddy Lumba

0

The death of highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, better known as Daddy Lumba, has triggered a profound national discussion that is much more than a debate over funeral rites. It is a moment of cultural introspection for Ghana, forcing the nation to confront how it honors its non-political heroes. This discussion, garnering attention from the diaspora and beyond, pits an artist’s monumental impact against the precedents of national protocol. The central question is no longer “should he get one?” but rather, “what does this moment reveal about Ghana’s values?”

The call for a state burial by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a powerful gesture that brings this conversation to the forefront, challenging Ghana to define a new precedent. This debate is unfolding against the rich tapestry of Highlife music, a genre that is a cornerstone of Ghana’s cultural identity, fusing traditional rhythms with Western melodies like jazz and brass band music. Lumba’s passing is seen by many not just as the end of an era, but as a deeply personal loss for a nation he helped define.

The Case for a State Funeral

Daddy Lumba was a national treasure whose influence extended far beyond Ghana’s borders. His career, spanning over four decades, produced more than 30 albums and an estimated 200 songs. This sheer volume and consistency are virtually unmatched in African music history.

Lumba’s music was the soundtrack of Ghanaian life, tackling themes of love, spirituality, and social justice with a lyrical genius that earned him the title of “musical chameleon” and “lyrical prophet.” His songs, sung almost entirely in Twi, resonated with Ghanaians and the diaspora alike, creating a powerful cultural bridge.

His international recognition was recently cemented when his song “Mpempem Do Me” was featured on King Charles III’s official Commonwealth Day playlist on Apple Music. This royal nod places him in an exclusive club alongside global superstars like Beyoncé and Bob Marley, underscoring his status as a global musical icon.

The outpouring of grief from Ghana’s political and artistic elite is telling. President John Mahama described his “unmatched musical genius” as providing “the soundtrack to our lives.” Former President Nana Akufo-Addo hailed him as “a pantheon among musical greats of all time.”

The widespread mourning led to a headline by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that quoted a prominent figure, calling him “the greatest from Ghana in the last 100 years.” A state burial would formally acknowledge this undeniable legacy, sending a strong message that cultural contributions are on par with political or military service. It would immortalise Lumba’s name and contributions for future generations, ensuring his legacy echoes not just in music, but in the national consciousness.

The Question of Equity

The call for a state burial, however, is met with a strong argument for fairness and precedent. Critics point to other highlife legends who passed without such an honour. Icons like Nana Ampadu and Jewel Ackah, both pillars of the highlife genre, received state-assisted funerals, a key distinction from a full state burial.

State-assisted funerals often involve some government support for the family but lack the full pomp, ceremony, and official protocol of a state funeral. If Daddy Lumba is accorded a state burial, it would be a retroactive judgment on the legacies of these other artists, suggesting their contributions were somehow less significant.

This disparity shines a light on Ghana’s lack of a clear, publicly-defined policy for national honors. The decision-making process appears fluid and can be influenced by public sentiment, political connections, and the timing of an artist’s death. Lumba’s supporters point to his close ties with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly his song “Nana Yɛ Winner,” which played a significant role in the party’s presidential campaigns.

While this is not an official reason, the perception of political influence in national honors can undermine their symbolic value. A state burial for Lumba would compel Ghana to establish clear, objective criteria for national honors, ensuring that future decisions are based on merit, not political favor.

Mourning a Friend, a Father, a Mentor

Beyond the political and cultural debate, the human element of Daddy Lumba’s death is what truly resonates. For many, his passing isn’t just the end of an era; it’s a deeply personal loss. The media personality Serwaa Amihere, who was close to the artist, expressed her grief, stating, “I am heartbroken and sad because a friend has passed. RIP to the legend, Daddy Lumba.” The rapper Sarkodie also shared a personal reflection, confessing on social media that he hadn’t been himself since the news broke. “Only if I had the words to express how I’ve been feeling since early this morning, but I don’t,” he wrote.

Lumba’s ability to connect with people on a personal level was his true genius. He sang about the universal experience of love and heartbreak, the challenges of life, and the importance of faith. His song “Aben Wo Ha” (“It’s Ready Here”) is a perfect example.

While it was a massive commercial success, its lyrics, filled with clever innuendo about love and intimacy, sparked controversy for being daring and provocative at the time. This dual nature—part prophet, part provocateur—is what made him so compelling to Ghanaians. These heartfelt tributes highlight the profound connection he had with his colleagues and the younger generation of artists he mentored and inspired.

Honouring Icons and Academia

Looking at how other nations honour their cultural icons provides a valuable perspective. In the United States, state funerals are strictly reserved for presidents and a select few distinguished public figures. Celebrities and musicians, no matter how beloved, receive grand, public tributes that are largely organised and funded by their families, often with massive public and media support.

The funeral of Michael Jackson, with an estimated 2.5 billion viewers worldwide, was a privately organised spectacle that showcased the depth of his global impact. Similarly, the United Kingdom reserves state funerals for monarchs. Princess Diana’s funeral, while a grand public event with an estimated 1 million attendees, was a ceremonial funeral, not a state one, highlighting a tiered system of honours.

The conversation around honouring cultural icons in academia is also changing globally. Universities in the United States, for example, have begun to offer courses dedicated to the study of musicians and their cultural impact. Institutions like Yale have offered courses on Beyoncé, examining her work as a portal to discuss Black radical tradition, history, and politics.

Similarly, a number of universities, including Harvard and New York University, have introduced classes on Taylor Swift, analysing her songwriting, entrepreneurship, and influence on gender and media. These precedents show that modern artists are now considered worthy subjects of academic study, moving them beyond mere entertainment and into the realm of cultural history.

A Framework for Legacy

These examples offer a model for Ghana. Instead of a blanket “state burial” that may be perceived as unequal, Ghana could create a tiered system. A “National Cultural Honour” could be a new category, a public and state-funded tribute that falls short of a state burial’s strict protocol but still provides a “befitting send-off.”

This would allow the government to honour artists like Lumba with the respect they deserve, without diminishing the legacies of those who came before him. Such a framework could include a state-sponsored tribute concert, a posthumous national award, or a government-funded foundation in his name to support emerging artists.

The clamour from fans for a permanent tribute is more than just an emotional outpouring—it is a powerful call to action for Ghana’s cultural institutions. A “Daddy Lumba Museum of Highlife Music” would not only serve as a repository for his life’s work but would also tell the broader story of how Highlife shaped Ghanaian identity.

As cultural critic Kwame Sarpong argues, “Lumba’s music isn’t just about him; it’s about us. His story is Ghana’s story. A museum would validate that.” In education, an initiative to develop a new curriculum for music students could solidify his legacy. By focusing on his compositional techniques and lyrical storytelling, this would not only honour Lumba but also provide a new generation of musicians with a deep understanding of Ghana’s musical heritage, much like the academic courses being offered for global superstars today.

The final decision on Daddy Lumba’s funeral is a test of Ghana’s commitment to the arts. It will define how the nation values its artists and whether it is ready to establish a clear, fair, and lasting framework for honouring its cultural heroes.

This is a chance for Ghana to not only mourn a legend but to strengthen its cultural identity for generations to come. The verdict will resonate at home and abroad, defining Ghana’s cultural reputation on the global stage.

Ghana Business Confidence Soars Despite Output Dip as Cedi Strengthens

Accra
Accra

Ghana’s private sector slashed selling prices at the second-fastest pace on record in July, capitalizing on a historic drop in purchase costs driven by the cedi’s sharp appreciation.

The S&P Global Ghana Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) edged down to 50.2 from June’s 51.3, signaling near-stagnation and the weakest improvement in six months.

Paradoxically, business optimism surged to its highest since February 2017, with 83% of firms forecasting output growth amid stable exchange rate expectations.

New orders expanded marginally for the sixth consecutive month, aided by price reductions, but growth slowed notably. Output declined slightly, ending a five-month expansion streak, as firms cited client liquidity constraints and softening demand.

Employment rose solidly, though job creation eased from May’s peak, while backlogs of work shrank at the fastest rate since June 2024. Staff costs climbed further, with companies raising wages to motivate workers, offsetting some benefits of falling input expenses.

Andrew Harker, Economics Director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, linked the trend to currency gains: “Output’s dip may prove temporary if prices stabilize. Record confidence bodes well, but cooling orders warrant vigilance.”

The Bank of Ghana’s July interest rate cut aligns with the PMI’s deflationary signals, though demand resilience remains untested.

Jailed Ghanaian fraud kingpin serving 7 years in US linked to Shatta Wale’s seized Lamborghini

A Ghanaian national at the centre of a major financial crime in the United States’ name has come up in a case of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Ghana’s seizure of a luxury Lamborghini sports car linked to popular musician Shatta Wale.

Nana Kwabena Amuah, described by US prosecutors as the ringleader of a multi-million-dollar cyber fraud network, is currently serving an 86-month (seven-year) prison sentence in the United States after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering in 2023.

His criminal activities are now connected to ongoing investigations in Ghana, where EOCO is collaborating with the FBI and the US Department of Justice.

The spotlight turned to Amuah after EOCO, in an August 5, 2025, statement, revealed that a 2019 Lamborghini Urus seized from Shatta Wale’s home was believed to be one of the assets acquired through Amuah’s fraudulent schemes.

According to US court documents, Amuah led a conspiracy that involved Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams targeting nearly 70 businesses and government institutions across the US.

The criminals impersonated vendors and tricked their victims into wiring funds to fake accounts controlled by the group.

These accounts were operated through shell companies, notably Gretson Company LLC, used to launder stolen funds.

One of the most significant incidents occurred in August 2022, when the City of Lexington in Kentucky was deceived into transferring housing assistance funds meant for a local nonprofit to a fraudulent bank account.

While Lexington managed to recover its funds, many other victims did not, with at least one business reportedly collapsing due to the financial loss.

During sentencing in October 2023, US District Judge Karen Caldwell emphasised the seriousness of the crime, noting how such online fraud creates a disconnect between perpetrators and the real-life harm suffered by victims.

Despite Amuah expressing remorse and asking for a second chance, the court ordered him to pay over $4.7 million in restitution to the affected entities.

Prosecutors also revealed the involvement of other co-conspirators, including Shimea Maret McDonald, a 24-year-old from Texas, who reportedly possessed over 40 fake identity cards.

EOCO confirmed in its statement that the Lamborghini seized in Ghana is believed to have been purchased using proceeds from the fraud and will remain in its custody as investigations continue.

The agency added that the US Department of Justice and the FBI have requested assistance in tracking down assets tied to Amuah’s activities.

GWL loses 73m gallons of water daily in Accra – MD

0

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, has revealed that the company loses approximately 73 million gallons of treated water daily in Greater Accra due to a troubling mix of theft, illegal connections, and faulty infrastructure.

He made the disclosure on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, amid widespread complaints of water shortages across parts of the capital.

According to him, just 48% of the water produced nationwide is properly accounted for, leaving more than half either lost or unbilled.

“In Greater Accra, we produce about 140 million gallons a day, but we can only account for 67 million gallons,” Mr. Mutawakilu disclosed, adding, “that means we cannot account for 73 million gallons every single day.”

He described the situation as “very terrible,” warning that the consistent loss of over half of the produced water is undermining the company’s ability to fund operations or sustain service delivery.

“Even with the 67 million gallons that are accounted for, we are still unable to collect all the revenue,” he added.

Mr. Mutawakilu attributed the massive losses to illegal connections, tampered meters, and commercial theft, urging greater public cooperation and enforcement to reverse the trend.

MTN Ghana has trained over 13,000 girls and 1,300 teachers across 11 regions since 2021 under its expanded Girls-in-ICT partnership with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation.

The telco increased its investment to GHS 17.6 million (from an initial GHS 10 million) to fund coding, animation, and web design workshops for girls aged 9–15.

Volta Region’s recent training session precedes upcoming programs in Upper East and Upper West, completing nationwide coverage.

Adwoa Wiafe, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, stressed urgency at the Volta event: “Digital skills aren’t luxury—they’re necessity. We’re investing in action to ensure every Ghanaian girl accesses ICT education.” The initiative supports Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s broader push for youth digital literacy ahead of Ghana’s 2028 leadership transition.

The Ministry plans a Trust Fund to sustain scaling, aligning with MTN’s “Ambition 2025” diversity goals. CEO Stephen Blewett’s vision that “the next big thing must come from Africa” anchors the program, which targets 15,000 beneficiaries by 2026.

Circular economy a game changer for Ghana’s unemployment situation – Gyenin

0

Eric Gyenin, the Country Coordinator for the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), says Ghana’s transition from a linear to circular economy could bridge the youth unemployment gap, while ensuring environmental stewardship.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Takoradi on the Ghana Circular Economy Centre (GCEC) Project being implemented by UNIDO in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, with funding support from the Global Affairs Canada.

He said the GCEC Project was a five-year initiative that sought to establish a centre to support Ghana’s shift from a linear to a circular economy for economic and environmental sustainability and it was being implemented with focus on the agriculture and agro-processing, textiles, and plastics sectors.

The project was anchored on five pillars namely: the establishment of a physical circular economy centre; training and capacity building for women and youth in the circular economy value; and provision of technical assistance for circular economy technologies and businesses, he said.

The rest are access to financial support for innovative circular economy projects, and networking; and knowledge exchanges on best circular economy practices.

He stated that the Ho Technical University serves as the host institution for the centre, and University of Cape Coast, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the OR Foundation were key leads in the implementation value chain.

Gyenin stated that the project was a game changer in resolving the unemployment situation in the country, noting that it would promote inclusive growth, unlock investment opportunities and create jobs through innovative and sustainable practices.

“Once we begin to go circular, it will increase the number of people who will work in the value chain of the various sectors that we are targeting, meaning waste from these areas would go through a circular process and come back into production,” he said.

“So, in all, if you look at the project’s spectrum, it is targeting unemployment and certainly a game changer in the context of job creation,” Gyenin said.

The UNIDO Country Coordinator said the idea of moving from a linear to a circular economy would also help boost Ghana’s industrialisation agenda to ensure an inclusive economic growth through a low-carbon economy, particularly for women, youth, and the informal sector.

On how the project could support government’s 24-Hour Economy policy, Gyenin said if Ghana wanted her economy to run round the clock, then everything must go circular, saying he believed that this project was going to help open up Ghanaian industries, by recycling of waste materials into things needed to feed production.

Renowned legal practitioner, Jenny Wiltshire, has distinguished herself as one of the top lawyers when it comes to high-profile criminal cases.

She is currently the legal counsel handling Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey’s rape charges he is facing in the United Kingdom (UK).

According to multiple media sources, Thomas Partey faces five counts of rape charges.

Wiltshire’s Profile

Jenny Wiltshire began her legal education journey at the University of Wales, where she obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree in 1994.

She proceeded to study law and politics at the College of Law in New York in 1995.

Jenny qualified as a solicitor in 1997. She joined Hickman and Rose in 2002 and has been a partner since 2004.

She served as the firm’s managing partner for seven years until 2016, when she took over as head of the Serious and General Crime team.

According to legal500.com, Jenny was Vice President of the London Criminal Courts Solicitors Association between 2015 and 2017 and its Secretary between 2014 and 2015.

She is a founding member of Women in Criminal Law.

She is also recognised as one of UK’s leading lawyers in her practice areas and has enjoyed a long run of success representing clients facing some of the gravest criminal charges, including murder, manslaughter, and serious sexual assaults.

Benjamin Mendy Case

Jenny was the leading attorney for former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy, who was acquitted of rape charges.

According to a BBC report, the 28-year-old was accused of attacking a 24-year-old woman at his £4m mansion in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, in October 2020.

Mendy was also accused of the attempted rape of another woman, aged 29, who said he had also molested her at his home two years before.

The France international broke down in tears as the not-guilty verdicts were read out by the jury foreman following a three-week trial at Chester Crown Court.

The jury of six men and six women deliberated for about three hours and 15 minutes before reaching their conclusion.

The footballer was cleared earlier of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to four young women or teenagers.

Thomas Partey’s Case

Jenny is once again taking charge of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey’s case, as the player was granted conditional bail after being charged with five counts of rape upon his first appearance.

The Black Stars player appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2025, for a hearing into the charges.

Following discussions in court, the judge decided to grant him bail under certain conditions after a plea was made.

The footballer was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on July 5, 2025.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the offenses are reported to have taken place between 2021 and 2022.

The charges involve three women: two counts of rape relate to one woman, three counts of rape involve a second woman, and one count of sexual assault pertains to a third woman.

Dazzling Outfits Ladies Can Sew With Duchess Fabric

0

Duchess satin is widely recognized for its association with luxury, elegance, and timeless fashion. With its smooth, glossy surface and graceful drape, this fabric is a favorite choice for upscale attire and special occasions. Whether used in wedding dresses or red carpet ensembles, duchess satin adds an unmistakable touch of class and grandeur.

One of the standout qualities of duchess satin is its distinctive feel and appearance. This fabric is typically medium to heavyweight, featuring a sleek, shiny front and a more subdued, matte reverse. This combination provides structure while still allowing for a flowing silhouette, making it perfect for designs that balance boldness and refinement.

Despite its luxurious look, duchess satin is quite resilient. It maintains its shape exceptionally well, which is ideal for fashion pieces that require volume or defined lines—such as ball gowns, structured jackets, or flared skirts. The way the fabric catches and reflects light gives garments a radiant, eye-catching finish.

However, working with duchess satin can be a bit tricky. Its smooth texture can make it slippery to handle, and the edges may fray easily. To achieve clean results, it’s best to use sharp cutting tools and take extra care during sewing. Beginners might want to start with simpler patterns—like a basic shift dress or a straight-cut skirt—before tackling more detailed projects.

As your sewing confidence grows, you can experiment with advanced techniques such as pleating, gathering, or even incorporating boning to create tailored silhouettes. Whether you’re crafting a show-stopping gown, an elegant top, or a standout suit, duchess satin is a fabric that offers endless creative opportunities.

Garments made from duchess satin always exude a sense of richness and grace. For those who want their designs to leave a lasting impression, this fabric is an exceptional choice.

NITA appeals for sponsorship ahead of 2025 National ICT Week

0

The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) is calling on sponsors and partners to support the 2025 edition of National ICT Week, scheduled for August 25–29.

Speaking at the official launch of the event, Director of Technological Services, Solomon Richardson, expressed optimism that this year’s celebration would attract increased support from sponsors and investors, helping to scale up Ghana’s digital development agenda.

“Ghana can leverage ICT to create more opportunities for the youth across the entire value chain. These are some of the achievements we’ve made so far,” he noted.

He, however, highlighted a major challenge facing the initiative—funding.

“One of our biggest hurdles has been securing adequate sponsorship. Organising a programme of this scale requires significant resources, and unfortunately, we haven’t been able to attract enough sponsors,” Mr. Richardson said.

National ICT Week serves as a platform to promote digital literacy, innovation, and technological advancement across the country. This year’s celebration is expected to feature exhibitions, workshops, and youth-centered technology initiatives.
