The government has announced the reassignment of Samuel Adom Botchway from his role as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry following opposition from the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG).

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu made this announcement after CLOGSAG had declared a nationwide strike in protest of Botchway’s appointment.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of CLOGSAG, after a meeting on February 11, 2025, raised concerns about politically exposed individuals being appointed to crucial civil service and local government positions.

CLOGSAG argued that Botchway, who assumed office on February 12, 2025, fell under this category, prompting the association to plan a nationwide strike beginning Thursday, February 20, 2025.

However, in a statement on Friday, February 14, Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the issue had been addressed. “In the truest spirit of cooperation and understanding, we are happy to announce that the matter has been resolved and there will be no nationwide strike by CLOGSAG,” he stated.

He also noted that a similar situation had been set by the previous administration, which remains a subject of judicial review. “We have learnt that the precedent that was set by the outgone government of appointing a non-civil servant to that position remains a pending matter in the courts,” he added.

The government emphasized its commitment to collaboration and ensuring national stability. “The Government of President Mahama remains committed to being a listening one as we together reset our nation,” Kwakye Ofosu concluded.

The resolution of this dispute underscores the government’s effort to maintain industrial harmony while addressing concerns raised by stakeholders in the public service sector.

Media personality, Berla Mundi, has expressed frustration over the growing problem of noise pollution in Ghana.

In a post shared on social media on February 13, 2025, Berla Mundi labelled Ghana as a “sick country” due to the incessant noise on the streets these days.

For instance, she lamented how trucks selling “nkura duro” (rat medicine) blast loud music and make announcements as early as 6 a.m., disturbing people who are either still asleep or preparing for work.

“Ghana is a sick country, honestly! Explain to me why there’s a truck selling ‘nkura duro’ with loud music and announcements as early as 6 am on the streets,” she said.

Berla criticised this behaviour and urged those responsible to stop disturbing others.

“When people are sleeping or getting ready for work, that’s noise pollution,” she added.

The post has since sparked a wave of reactions from netizens, with many individuals sharing similar complaints about noise disturbances in their own communities.

‘The regional minister told me not even Otumfuo can make me Council of State rep’

The Chief of Agric Nzema (a suburb of Kumasi) and aspiring Council of State member, Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, has narrated supposed events that transpired when he clashed with Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene during the chaos that was seen at the Council of State election for the region on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

According to Nana Nkansah Boadu, Dr Frank Amoakohene told him to his face that he was not going to be the Council of State representative for the Ashanti Region and that not even the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, could change his fate.

“The small boy (Dr Frank Amoakohene) who was chosen as a minister told me that it would be over his dead body for me to be elected as a member of the Council of State, and that not even Otumfuo could tell him to do so,” the Agric Nzema chief said in Twi in a viral video clip from a recent interview.

He went on to lambast the regional minister, describing him as a person with no respect for the elderly.

“If he was not properly nurtured, he should go and beat his parents,” he added.

There was chaos at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, where the Council of State election was held on Tuesday after the voting had ended.

A gang of unknown thugs broke into the polling centre and disrupted the sorting and counting of ballots.

Witnesses said the attackers stormed the venue, knocked over tables, destroyed ballot boxes, and scattered voting papers, forcing EC officials to halt the exercise.

Supporters who were upset with the results allegedly started the violence and demanded a review of the outcome.

Although there was a sizeable number of police personnel at the venue, they struggled to contain the situation as tensions flared, prompting a temporary suspension of the election proceedings.

The violent altercation left several media personnel, including GhanaWeb’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Gideon Nana Peprah, injured.

Sharing his ordeal with Etsey Atisu, Peprah said that about seven well-built men stormed the venue without provocation and began assaulting electoral officers.

“Built men from nowhere just stormed the place. They stormed the grounds where the electoral officers were doing the sorting and counting. Suddenly, they started scattering everything — the ballots, the prepared ballot papers, and the tally sheets. Then, at some point, they even started attacking themselves, which left us confused as to what was happening,” he narrated.

According to him, while trying to leave the chaotic scene, the men approached and accused him of filming the incident on his phone and demanded that he delete the footage.

“I was attacked by about seven or eight of them. They claimed they saw me taking videos and ordered me to delete them. Before I could react, they seized my phone and overpowered me,” he added.

Government to borrow GH¢8.068 billion in its treasury bills auction on February 14

Treasury bills were oversubscribed in last week's auction Treasury bills were oversubscribed in last week’s auction

The government plans to borrow GH¢8.068 billion in its treasury bill auction on February 14, 2025.

Last week, the government recorded an oversubscription in its treasury bill auction but rejected excess bids worth GH¢2.9 billion. It had set a target of GH¢7.258 billion but received over GH¢10.55 billion in bids.

However, it accepted only GH¢7.650 billion from the 91-day and 182-day bills.

The February 7, 2025, auction saw strong demand for the 91-day bill, with GH¢6.139.35 billion in bids tendered, of which GH¢3.877.25 billion was accepted.

For the 182-day bill, GH¢4.419 billion in bids were tendered, but only GH¢3.773.48 billion was accepted. There were no bids for the 365-day bill.

Interest rates for the bills dropped marginally in the auction issued on February 10, 2025. Currently, the rate stands at 27.98% for the 91-day bill and 28.68% for the 182-day bill.

The government’s rejection of excess bids signals either a move to borrow cautiously or an effort to avoid the current high-interest rates.

Although interest rates are currently higher than the inflation rate, they will increase the government’s cost when the bills mature.

The recent oversubscription also indicates strong investor confidence in short-term instruments.

Treasury bills remain the government’s primary source of borrowing until it regains access to the international capital market.

You are like any other club

Experienced football administrator Takyi Arhin has strongly criticized Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak for demanding automatic spots on the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Arhin accused the two clubs of exploiting the tragic death of Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong (Pooley) to push for special treatment.

He argued that Kotoko and Hearts are no different from other clubs in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and do not deserve privileged status.

“We are not justifying what happened in Nsoatre, we condemn it, and we mourn with the family,” Arhin stated. “But don’t use this tragedy to demand an Exco slot because you are the ‘most glamorous clubs’. That argument is neither here nor there. They are like any other club in the country,” he said in an audio aired on Pure FM.

He also took a swipe at both clubs, claiming they have lost their stature as football powerhouses.

“Today, if Kotoko are playing, you can count the fans in the stadium within three minutes. The same applies to Hearts of Oak. We used to use Kotoko and Hearts for budgeting, but that’s no longer the case.”

Arhin questioned the dominance of the two clubs over the past decade, implying that their influence has waned.

“How many times have Kotoko and Hearts won the league in the last 10 years?” he quizzed.

Following Pooley’s death, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have been vocal about the need for major reforms in Ghanaian football.

Kotoko has even suspended its participation in the league until their demands are met.

In a joint statement, both clubs outlined twelve key reforms they want the GFA to implement, including automatic representation on the Executive Council to have a direct say in decision-making.

The Minority in Parliament has assured President John Dramani Mahama of its cooperation and commitment to accord him all courtesies due in governing the state.

In response to the apology, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin commended the government’s gesture.
