We need to declare Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive – OSP insists

0

The Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Samuel Appiah Darko has insisted that the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta must be declared a fugitive.

“Yes, we have to do that because it is the legal procedure we must follow. Declaring him a fugitive means that we are now prepared to bring him in,” he said when Samson Lardy Anyenini, host of Newsfile on JoyNews, asked, “What do you lose if you say we are investigating him? Do you have to declare him wanted and a fugitive from justice?”

Since the declaration, some legal practitioners have argued that the OSP could proceed without him and not necessarily declare him a fugitive.

Mr Appiah Darko, however, disagreed with these views and insisted that they must declare him wanted. “We need to complete the preliminary processes at the police station. Once we have finished that and he has been charged, we can proceed without him,” he explained.

He emphasised that the OSP must follow legal procedures and not be swayed by public opinion.

Africa Arts Network (AAN) is proud to announce the highly anticipated return of the stage play IN THE CHEST OF A WOMAN, set to take place on February 28th, March 1st and 2nd, 2025, with performances at 4 PM and 8 PM each day at the National Theatre, Accra.

Last year, IN THE CHEST OF A WOMAN left a lasting impression on audiences, who were moved by its powerful storytelling, the raw emotion portrayed by the cast, and the captivating, immersive production design. However, the play’s influence extended beyond its audience, with industry professionals and arts advocates equally impressed.

Written by the late Efo Kodjo Mawugbe and directed by Ken Fiati, IN THE CHEST OF A WOMAN is a thought-provoking exploration of gender, power, and identity, challenging societal norms while celebrating the resilience of women.

The play delves into themes of leadership, legacy, and equality, making it a must-see for both new and returning audiences.

As part of the International Women’s Day celebration, this masterpiece pays tribute to the strength, leadership, and invaluable contributions of women in our society.

AAN looks forward to welcoming Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female Vice President, and Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture & Creative Arts, as distinguished Special Guests of Honour.

Building on last year’s overwhelming success, this year’s production promises to be even more extraordinary. “We are excited to stage IN THE CHEST OF A WOMAN once again. The response last year was phenomenal, and we are committed to delivering an even more refined, impactful, and unforgettable experience,” said Kofi Adinkra, Founder of Africa Arts Network.

IN THE CHEST OF A WOMAN returns – bigger, bolder, and better with a refreshed creative direction, with new elements added to elevate the overall experience for the audience. The staging promises a seamless blend of captivating performances, intricate set designs, and a compelling musical score that will resonate with viewers long after the curtain falls.

This year, audiences are in for an even more captivating experience, featuring an exceptional cast that includes Clemento Suarez, Jeneral Ntatia, Gadede Segbefia, Bill Asamoah, Edinam Atatsi, and many other talented performers.

IN THE CHEST OF A WOMAN is more than just a play; it is a celebration of African storytelling and artistic excellence. It stands as a testament to Africa Arts Network’s commitment to amplifying African voices, showcasing compelling narratives, and creating transformative cultural experiences.

Prosecute those behind Ofori-Atta’s residence raid – Amidu to Mahama

0

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has called on President John Dramani Mahama to hold those responsible for the invasion of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence accountable.

He stressed the need for the President to uphold the rule of law by ensuring that all individuals involved in the raid face legal consequences.

Amidu emphasized that Ghana must progress, not regress, arguing that the electorate did not vote for media tactics to distract from what he described as the “unlawful acts” of government agents.

In a statement issued on February 14, Amidu said, “The President needs to walk his talk by ensuring that all those involved in this despicable invasion and other invasions of citizens’ rights and freedoms are brought to trial before the ordinary courts in accordance with the due process of law.

“Ghana must reset forwards and not backwards to yesteryears! That is what the electorate voted for and not media psyops to deflect the enormity of such unlawful acts by government assets and agents.”

On the afternoon of Tuesday, February 11, 2025, a group of individuals, including some in military and police uniforms, raided Ofori-Atta’s residence in Cantonments while he was out of the country. His wife and other family members were present at the time.

Approximately 12 individuals—five in military uniforms, one in a police uniform, and the rest in plain clothes—carried out the operation. Ofori-Atta has been in the U.S. on medical grounds since the beginning of 2025, after notifying both the former and current Chief of Staff, Frema Osei-Opare and Julius Debrah.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng later claimed the raid was staged and declared Ofori-Atta wanted in connection with corruption-related offenses.

Read below the statement by Martin Amidu

Martin A. B. K. Amidu writes:

Mr. President, I discussed this pervasive coup mentality with you less than a month ago and now you need to face it squarely with firm leadership without any prevarication this time round on the brakeless bicycle speeding with you as the ridder again downhill towards political disaster unless you wakeup from slumber with decisive and preventive action.

The electorate will want to know through a thorough and impartial investigation whether the invasion of the home of Ken Ofori-Atta shown on the excerpts of the CCTV had any link with the declaration of Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive from justice by the OSP exercising the prosecutorial executive power on your behalf.

The coincidence of the alleged emergence of Richard Jakpa’s presence apparently leading the invasion of Ken Ofori-Atta’s home with officials admittedly being from the Office of the National Security Coordinator, and the OSP casting Ken Ofori-Atta as having staged the invasion himself to derail the OSP’s investigations gives the perception of a collaboration between the Office of the National Security Coordinator and the OSP unless disproved by an independent and impartial investigation.

The nation has a right to know the motive and the reasons for the Rambo style invasion of the former Minister’s home in his absence under the watch of the President as the Chairman of the National Security Council under which Mr. Richard Jakpa and his men work.

The invasion of Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence allegedly led by Richard Jakpa whose appeal was pending in the Supreme Court when the Attorney-General just appointed by President Mahama partisanly withdrew the case from the Court is a more important pressing reason to have a thorough and impartial investigation into the Rambo style invasion of Ken Ofori-Atta’s home. Would Richard Jakpa, if he really led the invasion of Ofori-Atta’s home on 11 February 2025, have done so if the Ambulance case on appeal was still pending in the Court?

The answer is in the negative. The involvement of Richard Jakpa in the Ken Ofori-Atta home invasion debacle, therefore, calls for the unearthing of the linkages, interconnections, and interwovenness of all the variables in the chain of the authorization and enabling process of the operations of the security assets and agents of the government to conduct the Rambo style invasion of a citizen’s home and privacy.

Mr. President, who is better placed under your Oath of Office to determine whether an appeal pending in the Supreme Court constitutes a political witch-hunt or a genuine case of prosecutable criminal conduct: an Attorney-General exercising prosecutorial authority of the executive power on your behalf at your sufferance or a Supreme Court properly vetted by Parliament and appointed by the executive branch under the 1992 Constitution?

Let the stories of the justifications for the exercise of the Attorney-General’s prosecutorial powers be
told to the marines and drunken sailors, and not to those of us who exercised those powers for decades beginning October 1988 when others were no where near the profession of the law.

Experience and not missing dockets from the Attorney-General’s Office counts! The President needs to walk his talk by ensuring that all those involved in this despicable invasion and other invasions of citizens’ rights and freedoms are brought to trial before the ordinary courts in accordance with the due process of law. Ghana must reset forwards and not backwards to yesteryears! That is what the electorate voted for and not media psyops to deflect the enormity of such unlawful acts by government assets and agents.

Goaso town goes quiet and empty as cane-wielding executioners enforce Val’s Day ban

0

Traditional executioners (Abrafuor) were seen patrolling the streets of Goaso, ensuring that residents complied with the directive issued by the Goaso Traditional Council to forgo Valentine’s Day celebrations. Locals were instructed to wear red and black in mourning for their recently deceased chief, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah.

Dressed in elaborate masquerade costumes, the Abrafuor moved through the town, monitoring adherence to the council’s directive.

The Goaso Traditional Council imposed the ban on Valentine’s Day festivities in the Goaso traditional area ahead of the one-week commemoration of the late paramount chief, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah.

The announcement was made during a press conference, where elders of the council—clad in solemn black attire—declared that any public observance of Valentine’s Day would not be tolerated. According to Nananom, the ban aligns with traditional customs, which call for solemnity and reverence in the lead-up to the funeral rites of a departed chief.

While the council has not outlawed Valentine’s Day in private settings, it has cautioned that any public display of celebrations will incur the displeasure of traditional leaders.

Nananom have placed a ban on Valentine’s Day celebrations. If you want to celebrate Valentine’s Day, do so quietly in your room. We don’t want to see people in hotels or public places having fun on Valentine’s Day. If you organise a party and are caught, you will be dealt with ruthlessly. We are mourning the passing of our chief, and as one people, we must all be united in sadness.

This directive prohibits Valentine’s-themed decorations, public parties, and any overt display of festivities within the Goaso traditional area on 14th February.

The ban has sparked mixed reactions among residents and social media users, with some welcoming it as a sign of respect for tradition, while others express disappointment over the imposed restrictions.

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured the public that the recent cholera outbreak in the country is under control.

As part of his campaign tour in some parts of the Central Region, the minister engaged with community members at Winneba on February 15, 2025, to educate them on the outbreak and preventive measures.

Speaking to the residents, he emphasised the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and keeping the environment clean to prevent the spread of the disease.

“I know some of you won’t do it, but to those who defecate openly and leave it in the community, this is one of the biggest causes of the disease. We must put an end to this practice,” he cautioned.

According to him, the government has rolled out several measures to combat the outbreak, including a nationwide vaccination exercise.

He added that the vaccination campaign has already begun in Cape Coast in the Central Region, and at Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region, with Swedru expected to start soon.

He further assured the public that the vaccine is safe, stating that he had taken it himself as proof.

“The vaccine is not poisonous, harmful, or dangerous. I have taken mine, so there is no need to fear,” he said at the Winneba Municipal Hospital.

The minister urged citizens to take advantage of the vaccination exercise and adhere to hygienic practices to curb the spread of cholera.

CLUB FRIENDLY: Heart of Oak battle Heart of Lions on Sunday

0

Accra Hearts of Oak will face fellow GPL side, Kpando Heart of Lions in a warm-up game on Sunday at the Kpobima Sports Complex in a bid to keep the team in shape for the return of the Ghana Premier League.

The game scheduled for tomorrow at 3pm gives the Rainbows the opportunity to battle Coach Bashir Hayford’s side for the third time this season, having lost one and won one in their last two meetings this season.

Currently, the Ghana Football Association has decided to put the Ghanaian top-flight on hold.

The decision comes after violent clashes during the match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025, which led to the tragic death of staunch Asante Kotoko supporter, Nana Pooley.

However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is taking steps to enhance security at match venues for the remainder of the season following the incident.

Accra Hearts of Oak are level on points (33) in fourth, behind Lions on goal difference after matchday 19.
