Joining BRICS and leveraging Islamic finance for transformational development

0

The global economic balance is shifting toward emerging economies, with alliances like BRICS comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa emerging as powerful platforms for collaboration.

BRICS nations collectively represent over 41% of the global population, command 31.5% of the world’s GDP (PPP), and account for 18% of global trade, making the bloc a significant force in international economics.

As the first quarter of 2025 unfolds, Ghana stands at a pivotal moment to consider joining BRICS and leveraging Islamic Finance as a transformative tool to address its pressing infrastructure needs in roads, electricity, rail systems, and aviation.

By embracing this dual strategy, Ghana could unlock funding, expertise, and partnerships vital for sustainable development.

BRICS membership would offer Ghana unprecedented access to the New Development Bank (NDB), a critical source of low-cost and flexible funding for infrastructure projects. Since its inception, the NDB has approved over $33 billion for transformative initiatives, including India’s solar energy projects and South Africa’s upgraded transport networks.

Ghana could tap into this resource to fund large-scale developments while expanding trade opportunities with vast markets such as China and India, whose combined populations exceed 2.8 billion.

This partnership would position Ghana to increase exports of cocoa, gold, and oil, benefiting from preferential trade agreements and economic collaboration.

Furthermore, BRICS membership offers opportunities for technological and industrial collaboration, particularly in renewable energy, rail development, and smart city innovations, as demonstrated by China and India.

Membership would also enhance Ghana’s geopolitical influence, enabling a stronger voice in shaping global trade, finance, and climate policies. Additionally, it would diversify Ghana’s international partnerships, reducing over-reliance on traditional Western financial systems and offering alternative funding sources.

Islamic Finance presents an ethical and inclusive financial model that aligns perfectly with Ghana’s development needs. With global Islamic financial assets surpassing $3.06 trillion in 2024, the system offers a robust alternative to conventional financing.

Islamic Finance tools such as Sukuk (Islamic bonds), Murabaha (cost-plus financing), and Ijara (leasing) have been used globally to fund infrastructure projects, ensuring accountability by tying investments to tangible assets.

For Ghana, this means potential solutions to its $3 billion annual funding gap in road construction and maintenance, following Indonesia’s successful use of Sukuk to raise over $5 billion in 2023 for highways.

Similarly, Islamic Finance can address Ghana’s energy sector challenges, where $2 billion annually is needed to achieve universal electrification. Malaysia’s $50 billion in Sukuk allocated to green initiatives since 2010 offers a replicable model for Ghana to develop solar and wind energy projects.

Ghana’s rail system, critical for economic connectivity, remains underdeveloped. Countries like Turkey have modernized rail networks using Islamic bonds, raising $2 billion for Istanbul’s third airport rail link. Ghana could adopt this approach to connect key industrial hubs.

In aviation, Gulf nations have utilized Islamic Finance to build world-class infrastructure, an approach Ghana could replicate to establish itself as a regional aviation hub.

Furthermore, Islamic Finance could help address Ghana’s housing deficit of over 1.8 million units, as seen in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, where Sharia-compliant financing has transformed the housing sector.

The BRICS nations exemplify the transformative potential of Islamic Finance. China, with a GDP of $19.4 trillion and 5.2% growth in 2024, has built over 25,000 kilometers of high-speed rail while integrating Islamic Finance for targeted projects in the Xinjiang region.

India, with a GDP of $3.9 trillion and 6.3% growth, has funded renewable energy and affordable housing initiatives through Sukuk. Brazil’s $2.1 trillion economy, growing at 2.4%, utilizes Islamic Finance for urban transport systems, while South Africa has raised $500 million through Sukuk for energy projects. These examples highlight how Islamic Finance has become a catalyst for sustainable development in diverse contexts.

To capitalize on these opportunities, Ghana must establish a robust policy framework, such as creating a National Islamic Finance House to regulate and promote Sharia-compliant financial activities. Capacity-building initiatives should train local professionals in Islamic Finance, ensuring long-term sustainability.

A pilot program issuing $1 billion in Sukuk could fund key infrastructure projects, focusing on transport and renewable energy.

Strategic partnerships with entities like the Islamic Development Bank, Malaysia, and Gulf nations would attract investment and expertise, while public education campaigns would foster trust and engagement with Islamic Finance initiatives.

As Ghana prepares to navigate the evolving global economic landscape, joining BRICS and adopting Islamic Finance could redefine its development trajectory.

This strategy offers not just immediate gains but also the promise of a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous future for generations to come.

At the Islamic Finance Research Institute of Ghana (IFRIG), we are committed to supporting innovative financial solutions that align with Ghana’s aspirations.

The time to act is now, and the opportunities are vast. Let us seize them together for a brighter tomorrow.

I didn’t start YouTube for money, I wanted recognition

0

Actor and aggressive show host, Kwaku Manu, recently sat down for an insightful conversation with YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon, where he shared the inspiring details of his journey in the entertainment industry, particularly his trailblazing role in the YouTube skit scene.

In the interview MyNewsGh cited, Kwaku Manu revealed that his venture into YouTube started with a simple desire to build his personal brand rather than immediately focusing on making money.

“When I started posting content on YouTube, I wasn’t thinking about monetization. My goal was to get recognized and establish myself. I wanted to make sure people knew who I was and what I stood for,” Manu shared candidly.

At the onset of his YouTube career, Manu’s videos were often short skits that featured his biological brother, Filla Man.

These videos were not just for entertainment but were a means to solidify his presence in a space that was yet to be fully explored by other Ghanaian content creators.

“I didn’t have any money to invest, but I knew the importance of creating content that would speak for me. I just wanted people to watch and appreciate what I was doing,” he added.

Kwaku also took time to reflect on the influences that shaped his early career. According to him, the inspiration behind his work came from his spiritual mother and pastor, Vida.

“I remember one day we were traveling from Kumasi to Accra, and my spiritual mother was with me. During that trip, I wrote my first script, inspired by a concept I came up with on the road. She had always encouraged me to trust my instincts and pursue my creative passion.”

Group petitions Mahama for removal of Jean Mensa, her two deputies

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa

A civil society organization, the Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement-Africa (PTAAM-Africa), has petitioned the government to remove Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), and her deputies from office.

The petition, addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, cites multiple allegations, including financial mismanagement, constitutional violations, and misconduct.

The petition highlights the procurement of a new biometric voter device, and the compilation of a new voter register before the 2020 general elections as key concerns.

PTAAM-Africa claims this expenditure, which ran into millions of taxpayer dollars, was unnecessary, as the existing 2016 voter register, and biometric devices were deemed adequate.

The group asserts that this decision resulted in significant financial loss to the state.

“The procurement of a new biometric voter device and the compilation of a new voter register before the 2020 general elections caused significant financial loss to the state. This expenditure, amounting to millions of taxpayer dollars, was unnecessary as the 2016 voter register and biometric devices were robust and fit for purpose,” part of the petition said.

The organization accuses Jean Mensa and her leadership team of creating a constitutional crisis through decisions made ahead of the 2020 elections.

“The Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement-Africa calls on Your Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, to act on this petition. Removing Mrs. Jean Mensa and her deputies will help restore public trust and transparency in the Electoral Commission, reaffirming Ghana’s status as a beacon of hope for

democracy in Africa.”

The group has called on former President Mahama to act swiftly in addressing their concerns. As the matter gains attention, political and civil society stakeholders are expected to weigh in on the implications for Ghana’s democratic processes.

Nsoatreman FC coach Yaw Preko is set to quit the struggling Ghana Premier League side Nsoatreman FC coach Yaw Preko is set to quit the struggling Ghana Premier League side

Nsoatreman FC coach Yaw Preko is set to quit the struggling Ghana Premier League side after just six months amid a major managerial paralysis that has unmasked the side’s downward spiral, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively report.

The former Ghana international is unhappy at the club amid a managerial crisis and a torrid 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

The side’s 1-1 stalemate against Medeama in an outstanding Premier League match at home on Wednesday has further heightened tension among the club’s top hierarchy and their supporters.

Nsoatreman’s woes were compounded after their highly respected General Manager Eric Alagidede resigned from his role in December 2024.

Alagidede’s unceremonious exit has sparked a wave of confusion and disquiet within the playing body in particular, and supporters in general.

Currently, Nsoatreman FC is 15th in the Ghana Premier League standings after 16 games into the ongoing league campaign.

The team has only amassed 15 points this campaign and could soon be involved in a battle to avoid relegation.

This weekend, Nsoatreman FC will take on Young Apostles in Round 32 of the MTN FA Cup.

It is unclear whether coach Yaw Preko will still be in charge when the game is played on Sunday.

Meanwhile, information from other quarters indicates that the top hierarchy of Nsoatreman FC is open to parting ways with the gaffer.

Miner, 23, fined for receiving false payments through electronic medium

0

A 23-year-old small-scale miner who tricked two mobile money vendors and received a cash sum of GH¢8,000 false payments through electronic medium has been fined GH¢12,000 or in default, six years imprisonment by the Tarkwa Circuit Court.

Charged with four counts of receiving payments through electronic medium falsely, Ahmed Abdul Rahaman, pleaded guilty with explanation.

The court, presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu, noted that Rahaman’s explanation confirmed his plea of guilty, and therefore, convicted him on his own plea.

In addition, the court ordered Rahaman to refund the GH¢8,000 belonging to the two mobile money vendors.

Prosecuting Chief Superintendent of Police, Alex Odonkor, said the complainants, Evelyn Lartey and Prince Appiah, were mobile money vendors at Wassa Asikuma in the Wassa Amen East Municipality, and both resided in the same community with Rahaman.

On April 10, 2024, which happened to be Eid ul-Fitr, while Evelyn was at work, Rahaman went there and asked her to transfer an amount of GH¢1,000 into his MTN mobile money account bearing the name Sadick Abdulai Baa.

He said after Evelyn had vanished with the transaction Rahaman asked her to transfer another GH¢1,000 into the same mobile money number and she obliged.

Chief Superintendent Odonkor said all this while, Rahaman kept convincing Evelyn that his brother was bringing GH¢4,000 physical cash so he could pay her, again requested that she should transfer another GH¢2000 and she did.

It said Evelyn waited for some time and realised that Rahaman was only deceiving her to get away with her cash.

Rahaman, who stays close to where Evelyn did her mobile money business pledged to go home and get her the money but never returned. The prosecutor said Rahaman proceeded to where Appiah worked and asked him to transfer an amount of GH¢2,000 into his MTN mobile money account and he did.

He said the convict again pleaded with Appiah to transfer another GH¢2, 000 into the same account as his brother was on his way with the money.

According to the prosecution, after Rahaman had gotten the money, he told Appiah that since his brother was delaying, he would dash home and bring him, and he agreed.

Appiah waited for Rahaman, but there was no sign of him returning with his money, so he went to his house and unfortunately, he met Evelyn in Rahaman’s house accusing him of defrauding her using the same modus opera dum, and the two arrested and took him to the Wassa Akropong police station for investigation.

Rahaman, in his caution statement, admitted the offence and further explained that he used the money to play aviator game with the hope that he would have won and refunded the complainant’s cash to them but unfortunately lost miserably.

Unlocking Ghana’s Future: How Salt can drive Industrialisation, transform the Economy, and Empower Communities

0

Prof. Douglas Boateng

In a recent interview with a leading international industrial journalist, Professor Douglas Boateng, a globally renowned industrial engineer, industrialist, Pan-Africanist, chartered director, and social entrepreneur, as well as the Chair of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and Labadi Beach Hotel, highlighted the transformative potential of Ghana’s salt industry.

While gold, cocoa, and oil have traditionally been the pillars of the nation’s economy, Professor Boateng emphasized that salt; a resource often overlooked, holds the promise to revolutionize Ghana’s economic landscape. It could drive industrialisation, generate sustainable jobs, and empower communities while creating high-value allied industries.

“Salt is not just a mineral. It is a foundation for transformation and an opportunity to industrialise our economy,” Professor Boateng remarked. “With strategic development, salt can create jobs for our youth, empower women, and position Ghana as a leader in the global chemical industry.”

He explained the critical role of salt in producing essential chemicals such as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash, which are vital for industries like pharmaceuticals, plastics, detergents, and agriculture. With Ghana’s abundant reserves and strategic location, salt offers a unique chance to diversify the economy, reduce reliance on volatile commodities, and secure long-term growth.

“Salt is not just about extraction. It’s about unlocking its potential through value addition,” he added. “Processing salt into high-value products can provide opportunities for skilled workers, unskilled labourers, and entire communities. From chemical engineers to local entrepreneurs, the ripple effects are immense.”

Professor Boateng underscored the benefits for women and youth, who often face barriers to inclusion in traditional industries. “Imagine women leading salt-processing enterprises or young people gaining stable employment in industries powered by our salt reserves. With the right leadership, investment, and governance, this vision can become a reality,” he stated.

MIIF’s investment in Electrochem Ghana Ltd. has already laid the groundwork for this transformative industry. However, Professor Boateng stressed that further investments are essential.

“This is a national opportunity. The question is whether we will take ownership of our resources or allow external interests to dominate. To secure long-term dividends for future generations, we must act decisively,” he cautioned.

Drawing on global examples, he pointed to India’s thriving chemical industry, built on the strategic use of its salt reserves.

“India transformed its salt into billions of dollars in export revenue while creating millions of jobs. Ghana has the potential to do even more by leveraging our natural advantages and investing in innovation and infrastructure.”

Discussing MIIF’s strategy, he explained, “The Fund is focusing on salt production areas, including the Central Region, to expand Ghana’s capacity. With coordinated governance and investment, this industry could add tens of billions of dollars to the economy by 2040, while serving as a catalyst for industrialisation and value creation.”

Professor Boateng outlined the steps needed for success. These include building processing plants, improving transportation networks, and creating storage facilities.

Training programmes must equip Ghanaians with the skills to work in salt extraction and value-added industries. Empowering women and youth to lead these enterprises is critical. Attracting capital and expertise through public-private partnerships is also essential, alongside policies that ensure sustainable growth.

In his summary remarks, Professor Boateng shared a thought-provoking reflection:

“Salt is more than a resource; it is a symbol of what Ghana can achieve when we think beyond the immediate. It is a seed. If we plant it wisely, nurture it with vision and unity, it will grow into a tree of prosperity. Its branches will offer shade to generations yet unborn.”

“Let us seize this moment. Let us invest in what matters. When a nation believes in its potential, the possibilities are endless. The future does not wait; it belongs to those who prepare for it. Salt can be the cornerstone of Ghana’s industrialisation journey; but only if we have the courage to act today,” he said.

Free SHS: Decentralise food procurement to curb shortages

0

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has reiterated the need for public discourse and a possible review of the Free Senior High School policy.

This follows a recent appeal to parents to provide adequate provisions for their wards to help address the ongoing feeding challenges in the various SHSs across the country.

Speaking to Citi News, the National Secretary of CHASS, Primus Baro, attributed the delays in food supplies to the centralisation of food distribution and stressed the urgency of resolving the issue to avert a possible closure of schools.

“The issue about this centralisation of food supply is that the system is not the best. So we have always asked that we get back to the old system. We are not saying give us money. We are saying that allow the schools to do the procurement, and then we buy the food items from within our environment.

“Each school will develop its menu, get the food items that are within the environment, and then we cook. It makes things much better than centralising the procurement of food items. I am surprised that eight years down the line, there has never been any form of engagement to look at the system.”

Mahama considers privatising power distribution

0

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed intentions to revisit the privatisation of power distribution in Ghana, highlighting its necessity for improving efficiency in the country’s energy sector.

The President disclosed these plans during a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank at his private office in Cantonments, Accra.

He stressed the importance of addressing systemic inefficiencies that have plagued the nation’s power value chain, particularly within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Reflecting on his tenure as Vice President under the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, President Mahama recounted the launch of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project.

The initiative aimed to position Ghana as a leading producer and exporter of electricity in Africa by enhancing the sector’s overall efficiency.

“During my time as Vice President, the late President Atta Mills initiated the Millennium Corporation Compact, designed to make Ghana the most efficient electricity producer in Africa and a hub for energy exports,” he said.

“Sadly, while democracy has its dividends, it can sometimes be a curse. The programme’s final phase, intended to improve distribution and metering, was mishandled by subsequent administrations, with the Power Distribution Service (PDS) becoming a thing of the past.”

President Mahama underlined the importance of revisiting privatisation efforts to improve the ECG’s operations.

“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to face significant challenges across the entire power value chain,” he noted, signalling his administration’s readiness to re-engage the private sector in electricity distribution.

He added that discussions with the World Bank would be sought to harness the necessary expertise for this initiative.

According to the President, privatising the final phase of power distribution could be key to ensuring sustainable energy solutions and achieving Ghana’s long-term energy goals.

Blay Nyameke Armah, the Member of Parliament for Sekondi in the Western Region of Ghana, has hinted that they aim to seek permission from President John Dramani Mahama to relocate former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s statue at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis to his hometown, Kyebi.

According to him, the former president has no legacies in the region to deserve a mounted statue.

He explained that the town should have been the priority for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, rather than selfishly glorifying himself with the statue.

Speaking in an interview with Oyerepa TV on January 7, 2024, he stated, “What did Nana Addo do for us in the Western Region to deserve a statue there? The statue, our communication directors will relocate to his hometown.

“We will get permission from our president (Mahama) to relocate the statue to Kyebi and mount Kwame Nkrumah’s statue there.”

Background:

The statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, according to reports, was vandalised on the morning of Monday, December 16, 2024, by unknown persons.

Viral visuals of the defaced statue showed how the left leg had been partly damaged.

President Akufo-Addo came under heavy criticism after he unveiled the statue on November 6, 2024.

A section of the public, including now President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, accused President Akufo-Addo of self-glorification with his decision to unveil a statue of himself.

Mahama said that the president should not be the one putting up statues of himself but rather people should be doing that after he leaves office, in recognition of his achievements.

Some residents of Sekondi were inflamed by the erection of the statue in their community, with some pointing to the devastating nature of the very road the statue was erected on.

Some of the residents threatened to move the statue should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lose the December 7, 2024, election.

Kevin Danso draws interest from three clubs after rejecting Wolves’ offer

Lens’ defensive star Kevin Danso Lens’ defensive star Kevin Danso

Lens’ defensive star Kevin Danso is generating significant transfer buzz after declining a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The versatile 26-year-old center-back, a product of Reading and Milton Keynes academies, could be on the move this winter, with three clubs circling. Despite Lens’ reluctance to part with any of their starting defenders, the French side may reconsider if an offer exceeds a 20 million move.

Following a summer transfer saga with Roma that ended without a move, Kevin Danso’s future at Lens remains uncertain.

According to Foot Mercato, while the club is keen to hold onto him, the Austrian international is open to joining a more ambitious project.

Turkish powerhouses Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and German side VfB Stuttgart are reportedly interested in signing the versatile defender, offering a tempting prospect for the player.

With Lens potentially losing key defensive players, the coming weeks could be pivotal for Danso as he contemplates his next career step.

Our supporters are protecting state properties, not stealing them

0

A Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has defended the actions of alleged party supporters accused of vandalising state properties and attacking state institutions.

Gbande argued that these individuals were protecting state property rather than engaging in acts of violence.

Speaking to Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, January 8, the NDC’s Deputy General Secretary added that the party is collaborating with the police to restore law and order and address the situation amicably.

“The young people of this country are determined to change the narrative of our country, where people steal government property, and government money with impunity. So it is unfortunate, but I think that we should appreciate those who are sacrificing to preserve and protect state property.

“If the situation was that they were also stealing and taking it home, then it is a different matter. But if it is the case that they are moving and protecting state assets that government officials are taking away, then I think that it is a problem the party has come to appreciate, which we are dealing with.

“We have been working with the Inspector General of Police, cooperating with some skeletal individuals within the former government who are still at post to try and regularise the situation.”

All 4 independent MPs align with Majority Caucus, Ato Forson confirms

0

The Majority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that all four independent Members of Parliament have expressed their intention to align with the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

Among them, Kwame Asare Obeng, MP for Gomoa Central, has formally communicated his decision to the Majority Caucus.

However, the other three – Ohene Kwame Frimpong (Asante Akim North), Nandaya Yaw Stanley (Wulensi), and Worlasi Kpeli (Afram Plains North) – have been urged to submit official letters to both the Majority Caucus and the Speaker for validation.

“Currently, we have received letters from all four of them. So, Mr. Speaker, we’ll wait for them to officially write to you.

“My attention [has been drawn to the fact] that so far, the MP for Gomoa Central has written to us, but the rest are yet to write officially to confirm their positions,” Dr Forson disclosed during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

NPP leadership very arrogant; they’ll be in opposition for long – A Plus

0

Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A-Plus Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A-Plus

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A-Plus, has taken a swipe at the leadership of the outgone New Patriotic Party (NPP), tagging them as arrogant.

The freshman MP who just joined the 9th Parliament after winning the seat as an independent candidate believes the NPP’s humiliating defeat in the 2024 elections was as a result of their lack of respect for Ghanaians during their 8-year tenure.

In an interview with pressmen in Parliament on Wednesday, January 8, 2024, A-Plus who has joined the NDC caucus in the House to do business debunked rumours that he was influenced by money to be by the side of the Majority.

He said the rumours were being peddled by some NPP elements who were unhappy about his choice.

“Nobody can induce me to join the NDC. I made that decision myself because I felt it would help my people,” he said.

“Most of you are corrupt so when someone takes some decision you think that person has been bribed to do so.”

He said that as an independent candidate, the two major political parties, the NPP and NDC, could not beat him in Gomoa Central because the people had confidence in him.

“I am the first person to win a parliamentary seat in the Central region as an independent candidate and that means I am independent-minded.”

“The NPP is made up of arrogant people. They are spreading the lies, but it won’t work. They will stay in opposition for a very long time because of their arrogance and impunity. I wish the NDC would govern for 8 years and break the 8-year cycle and continue to be in power, so the arrogant NPP leadership and members stay in opposition for a long time,” he jabbed.

A-Plus said because he rejected an offer from the NPP to sit with them in Parliament, they decided to dent his image as though he was induced to do business in the House with the NDC caucus.

“Nobody can buy my conscience. I joined them because they have promised to help my constituency but that doesn’t mean I will pick any political party’s ID card,” he stated.

The renowned entertainer who has now turned a politician indicated that his constituency will be developed by the NDC government.

“John Mahama says he will give my people potable water, good roads and build schools for them, and I am excited about that but that does not mean I will join the NDC as a card-bearing member,” he concluded.

A-Plus was once a member of the NPP but left the party during the first term of the Akufo-Addo administration.

Privatising ECG will be considered to improve power distribution

0

President John Dramani Mahama has indicated the possibility of privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as part of efforts to address inefficiencies in the country’s power distribution system.

The President believes that involving the private sector in managing ECG could help resolve longstanding challenges, including operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and inadequate service delivery.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at his private office in Accra, Mahama noted that privatization may form part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the performance of the energy sector.

Reflecting on Ghana’s participation in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his tenure as Vice President, Mahama emphasized the importance of efficient energy distribution in achieving the nation’s development goals. He highlighted that any move towards privatization would focus on ensuring a sustainable energy sector capable of meeting the growing demands of Ghana’s economy.

Mahama also assured stakeholders that decisions regarding ECG’s future would involve thorough consultations to balance public interest with the need for improved performance.

“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain. So, going ahead with privatising the last point of electricity distribution, bringing in private sector efficiency is something that we want to take up again. We want to speak with the World Bank to get the expertise to be able to do that.”

World Bank pledges ‘Better Bank’ vision to drive Ghana’s growth

0

The World Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing economic growth in Africa, with Ghana positioned as a key focus for development financing and strategic partnerships.

Ousmane Diagana, Vice President for West and Central Africa at the World Bank underscored the institution’s dedication to helping African nations overcome challenges to sustainable growth.

Speaking during a high-level delegation meeting with President John Mahama in Accra on January 8, 2025, Diagana emphasised a renewed approach under the World Bank’s new leadership.

Diagana explained the shift in priorities following the appointment of Ajay Banga as the World Bank’s President. “We now focus on being a ‘better bank’ before becoming a ‘bigger bank,’” he said.

He highlighted the importance of ownership, partnership, and complementing financial assistance with global knowledge to foster sustainable development.

“As a global institution, our experiences with various countries have equipped us to provide tailored support.

“This includes addressing challenges like domestic resource mobilization and ensuring financing models are optimized for economic growth,” he added.

Diagana drew attention to Ghana’s need to widen its resource base, noting that the country faces challenges similar to those in Senegal and Kenya.

“We are happy to bring our expertise into discussions with Ghana, ensuring the domestic organization of financing is strengthened,” he said.

He also addressed the cocoa sector, a cornerstone of Ghana’s economy, highlighting its potential and challenges.

“Through our Country Climate and Development Report, we have identified opportunities in agriculture, particularly cocoa. Our recommendations and existing programmes aim to address sector challenges and unlock its full potential,” Diagana explained.

The meeting underscored the World Bank’s focus on blending financial assistance with expertise, ensuring that Ghana benefits from the institution’s global experience.

This collaborative approach aims to address systemic challenges while empowering the country to harness its economic potential.

As Ghana embarks on its next chapter under President Mahama’s leadership, the World Bank’s commitment signals optimism for enhanced partnerships and impactful development efforts in critical sectors such as agriculture and resource mobilization.

Everyone in the NPP gov’t became a sycophant

0

Former Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani Former Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani

Former Chief of Staff under the John Agyekum Kufour administration, Kwadwo Mpiani, has indicated that everyone in the outgone New Patriotic Party government became a sycophant.

He says they looked on even when things were going bad but could not speak truth to power.

Kwadwo Mpiani blames this on the fact that the political party gave power to just one person and since everyone wanted to be in his good books, they could not say it to his face when things were wrong.

What’s even worrying, according to him, is the fact that people who could speak up were made outcasts and described as individuals who did not like the government and the president.

“Unfortunately for the party and government, when you express concerns, you become an outcast because they think you don’t like the president or the government; that is why you’re behaving that way.

From there, we went to the government. Government with executive powers more powerful than a party leader, so one would have thought that at that stage one would have thought that we would sit up to say, Let’s be careful of what we do, but it got to a stage where almost like we became sycophants, knowing things were not going well, but we allowed things to go on,” he said in an interview on Good Morning Ghana.

Antoine Semenyo comfortable in any forward role

0

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo Ghana international Antoine Semenyo

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has shared his thoughts on his preferred position on the pitch, revealing that he’s comfortable in any forward role.

Throughout his career, the 25-year-old has been utilised on both wings and occasionally as a centre forward.

His recent deployment on the left wing for the Ghana national team, however, sparked some debate, with head coach Otto Addo facing criticism for the decision.

Despite the discussions, Semenyo is content with playing anywhere across the forward line. “Seriously, I feel like I’m comfortable playing in any role across the forward positions,” he said in an interview with Stadium Astro.

He attributes his versatility to his ability to use both feet, adding, “I’m comfortable playing whether on the left, right or in the middle.”

Looking ahead, Semenyo’s ultimate goal is to play as a number 9. “In my head, the end goal is to be a number 9,” he explained.

“Maybe in the years to come when I’ve built the experience, I’ll eventually transition into that, but I’m not too hung up on that.”

Semenyo concluded, “If I end my career playing on either wing, I wouldn’t complain.”

The forward has enjoyed a productive season at Bournemouth, scoring five goals and providing two assists from wide positions in the Premier League.

However, he has yet to score or assist for Ghana in 2024.

NDC’s future success depends on Mahama’s performance – Asiedu Nketiah

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, says the success of President John Mahama’s administration will play a vital role in the party’s future electoral fortunes.

According to him, the NDC’s performance in 2028 will largely depend on the accomplishments of President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at Mahama’s inauguration in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, Nketiah stressed the direct link between the President’s performance and the party’s future, noting that “if he succeeds, it presents different opportunities.”

He continued; “If he doesn’t succeed, I am afraid it will get to a point where even if the flagbearership is handed to you on a silver platter, you will be running away from it.”

Nketiah called on party members to rally behind Mahama’s administration, emphasising the need for a collective effort to ensure its success.

“Our focus ought to be on making sure President Mahama succeeds so that anybody at all who replaces him as our candidate will have a solid foundation to ride on to victory,” he added.

The NDC National Chairman also advised party members with future political ambitions to prioritise supporting the current administration, warning against actions that could undermine Mahama’s success.

“I am, through this medium, advising everybody within the party who is nursing ambitions for the future to make sure that their actions today do not compromise or affect the prospects of President John Mahama succeeding.

“The immediate focus ought to be that President Mahama must succeed in an excellent manner so that any other person succeeding him can build on his success,” he added.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Former president

The Paramount Chief of Keta, Togbui James Ocloo V, has expressed disappointment with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to deliver on his promise to construct a port in Keta.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, Togbui Ocloo V highlighted the slow progress of the project, which began in 2019 with the appointment of a director. Despite assurances from the government, work on the port has stalled, with office buildings still at the foundation stage after several years.

Togbui Ocloo V called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the completion of the Keta Port project, stressing its importance for job creation and economic growth in the region.

He recalled that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had also promised a mini fishing port in Keta, but that project was never completed either.

“We waited and waited, and that government left power. Nothing was done,” he said, adding that while chiefs do not engage in politics, they have a responsibility to speak up for their people.

The Paramount Chief remains hopeful that the incoming government will address the delays and ensure the project is finally completed for the benefit of the people of Keta.

Inaki Williams’ goal disallowed as Barcelona defeats Athletic Club 2-0 to reach Spanish Super Cup final

Ghana international Inaki Williams Ghana international Inaki Williams

Ghana international Inaki Williams was on target on Wednesday night for Athletic Club against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, but his goal was disallowed.

The forward started for his team in the game at King Abdullah Sports City, putting in a strong performance despite the eventual defeat.

Barcelona opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Alejandro Balde set up Gavi, who finished expertly into the bottom left corner to give the Catalan side a 1-0 lead.

Inaki Williams nearly equalised on the stroke of halftime with a low shot inside the box, but Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech produced a superb save to deny him.

Early in the second half, Barcelona extended their lead. Gavi played a neat pass to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who calmly finished into the right corner to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute.

Athletic Club thought they had clawed back into the game in the 87th minute when Williams capitalised on a defensive mistake to score. However, celebrations were cut short after a VAR review revealed an offside in the build-up, ruling the goal out.

Barcelona’s win secured their place in the Spanish Super Cup final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Real Madrid and Mallorca.

For Athletic Club, the defeat was a tough blow despite a valiant effort led by Inaki Williams.

Demystifying derivatives–clarifying interest rate risk management

0

The term “interest rate derivatives” often elicits uncertainty, even among seasoned corporate finance teams. Similar to other risk management instruments, many perceive these tools as complex. However, because interest rates remain volatile, impacting borrowing costs, businesses managing variable-rate loans or planning major capital expenditures must now prioritise these tools more than ever.

This article seeks to clarify Interest Rate Swaps and Options (Caps, Floors, and Collars) and emphasise their practical applications for businesses. Rather than serving as a technical manual, it urges action, highlighting that fluctuations in interest rates can cause unforeseen cost increases, whereas hedging instruments offer a measure of certainty and financial stability.

The global economic landscape has seen significant shifts in interest rates in recent years, often catching businesses unprepared. For instance, in 2022, central banks rapidly raised rates to counter inflation, leaving companies with floating-rate loans facing unexpectedly higher interest payments. These sudden cost surges can strain profitability, especially for businesses reliant on debt financing.

This article will also highlight the potential risks of unhedged interest rate exposures and discuss how Interest Rate Swaps and Options can act as essential insurance against rate fluctuations, allowing businesses to focus on their growth objectives without fearing unpredictable borrowing costs.

How Does Interest Rate Risk Affect Corporates?

Consider a company that has taken a floating-rate loan tied to the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) plus a margin of 3%. Paying at a floating rate means the future SOFR rate is unknown, which could be higher or lower than current levels, potentially burdening the client if SOFR rises. To illustrate, assume SOFR stands at 5%, the effective borrowing rate is thus 8%.

If SOFR increases by just 2% to 7%, the borrowing cost rises to 10%, potentially impacting profit margins significantly. For a loan of $10 million, this translates to an additional annual cost of $200,000 in interest alone. Without a hedging strategy, the business absorbs this increased cost, which they could have mitigated with the right risk management tools.

Similarly, businesses planning to issue fixed-rate bonds might find themselves disadvantaged if rates decrease after issuance, leaving them locked into higher costs.

What Precautions Can Businesses Take to Manage Interest Rate Risk?

Certainty is the key to mitigating interest rate risk. By employing hedging tools like swaps, caps, floors, and collars, businesses can stabilise their borrowing costs, ensuring predictable cash flows. Let’s explore these tools:

(I) Interest Rate Swaps (IRS)

An Interest Rate Swap allows a business to exchange its floating interest payments for fixed payments (or vice versa). This tool is ideal for corporates with floating-rate loans who seek protection against rising interest rates.

Let us look at an example: Imagine the same company with a $10 million floating-rate loan at SOFR + 3%. To hedge against potential rate increases, the company enters into an IRS agreement with the bank, locking in a fixed rate of 7% for the next three years.

  • If SOFR rises to 8%, the company’s effective floating rate would have been 11%. However, under the IRS, the business continues paying the fixed rate of 7%, saving 4% annually on the loan.
  • Conversely, if SOFR drops to 3%, the company still pays 7%. This creates a dilemma: paying more with fixed cash flows versus potentially paying less if the floating rate remains unchanged. This “cost” is, however, the trade-off for stability and predictability in financial planning.

Recommendation: Interest Rate Swaps are best suited for businesses with long-term floating-rate exposures. While they eliminate increasing interest rate risk, the trade-off is forfeiting potential savings if rates decline. The predominant impetus behind entering into such a swap arrangement is to therefore to enhance cash flow management or to pre-emptively mitigate the adverse effects expected from fluctuations in interest rates.

(II) Interest Rate Caps

A Cap provides the right to limit the maximum interest rate on a floating-rate loan. Businesses can benefit from lower rates while avoiding excessive increases.

Let us look at an example: Assume the company buys a Cap at 9% for its $10 million loan. If SOFR rises to 10%, the Cap activates, and the company pays a maximum of 9%. If rates remain below 9%, the business benefits from the lower floating rates.

There is, however, a cost to these structures given their immense benefit. They require an upfront premium, typically a percentage of the notional amount, which varies based on market volatility.

Recommendation: Caps are ideal for businesses expecting moderate rate increases but wanting to retain flexibility in case rates decrease.

(III) Interest Rate Floors (For Businesses that have investments)

A Floor sets a minimum interest rate level, ensuring a business earns a guaranteed return on interest-bearing assets like fixed deposits or bonds. If a company has invested in floating-rate instruments, a Floor ensures returns do not fall below a specified level, say 4%, even if SOFR drops to 2%. This is ideal for businesses or investment firms that want to protect their investment returns from declining and adversely impacting commitments made with the expectation of higher floating rates.

Recommendation: Floors are suitable for corporates with substantial interest-bearing assets exposed to declining rate environments.

(IV) Interest Rate Collars

A Collar combines a Cap and a Floor, creating a range within which the interest rate fluctuates. While it limits upside and downside risks, it usually comes with zero upfront premium.

We can look at an example of the same loan where the company enters into a Collar with a Cap of 9% and a Floor of 5%. If rates rise above 9%, the Cap ensures payments are capped at 9%. If rates drop below 5%, the Floor ensures payments remain at 5% essentially allowing the loan repayments to float in between the Cap and the Floor that is convenient for the business.

Recommendation: Collars work well for businesses looking to balance cost-effectiveness with risk protection, as they eliminate premium costs associated with standalone Caps or Floors.

Advantages of Hedging with Interest Rate Derivatives

There are many advantages of risk management products referencing interest rates:

  1. Predictability: Ability to stabilise cash flows and enhance financial planning.
  2. Flexibility: Options (Caps, Floors, and Collars) allow businesses to benefit from favourable market conditions.
  3. Cost Savings: Swaps and zero-premium structures like Collars minimise hedging costs.
  4. Competitive Edge: Protecting against rate volatility ensures businesses remain focused on operations without surprises from rate movements.

In an unpredictable interest rate environment, businesses must not leave their borrowing costs to chance. Utilising financial instruments such as Interest Rate Swaps, Caps, Floors, and Collars allows companies to mitigate the financial impact of rate fluctuations, ensuring stability in their operations.

We recommend discussing tailored solutions with your bank that align with your specific risk-reward profile. While the article primarily discussed SOFR hedging, it is important to note that Ghana Reference Rate (GRR) hedging is also feasible. This involves hedging where the local currency is utilized as either an asset or a liability. At Absa Bank, we are committed to guiding you in developing a comprehensive risk management strategy that supports your growth objectives while protecting your financial bottom line.

Communications Director, GNASSM, Abdul Razak Alhassan[L] and General Secretary, Godwin Armah Communications Director, GNASSM, Abdul Razak Alhassan[L] and General Secretary, Godwin Armah

The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has penned a heartfelt congratulatory letter to the President, His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, acknowledging the trust the people of Ghana had bestowed upon his leadership.

“The overwhelming support and endorsement from the people of Ghana is a testament to the trust they have placed in your leadership and vision for the nation’s future. We commend your commitment to advancing the growth and development of the country”, the association noted.

In a statement signed and released on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, by the General Secretary of GNASSM, the small scale miners emphasized their commitment to collaborating with President Mahama’s administration to promote environmental stewardship, particularly, protecting water bodies and forest reserves.

GNASSM acknowledged the critical role small-scale miners play in Ghana’s mining sector, assuring that they “remain steadfast in our mission to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The association highlighted the barriers they have surmounted in collaboration with successive governments and noted that a lot more needed to be done in the fight against illegal mining and environmental degradation.

They, in particular, called for collaboration in the areas of enforcing the mining laws, especially those on environmental degradation and water pollution; engineering, designing of equipment, site planning and layout and the use of mining engineers.

They also want mining communities, civil society organizations, mining associations, and the media to be empowered or build on their capacities to deal with illegal mining menace at the local level.

Additionally, they want a strong partnership with the government to improve on attitudinal change of people towards the environment.

“As we move forward, we are committed to deepening this collaboration to ensure that Ghana’s mining industry thrives in an environmentally responsible manner, benefitting both the nation’s economy and its future generations”, the statement in part read.

Wayne Rooney risks house blaze after blowing up hairdryer in his sleep

Coleen Rooney revealed Wayne once risked a fire in their home when he blew up a hairdryer while trying to sleep.

The WAG, 38, who has been married to the football star since 2008, opened up about her bond with her husband, her I’m A Celebrity stint as well as the infamous Wagatha Christie trial during a chat with Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane and Ian Wright on the Stick to Football podcast.

In one hilarious moment, the I’m A Celebrity runner-up revealed Wayne sometimes uses a hairdryer to help him sleep as he finds the calm noise soothing. However, the white noise almost turned into a raging fire when he blew up the hairdryer while trying to have a little rest.

Speaking about the near-disaster, Coleen explained: “It’s a fan when I’m in the bed, but if not, it is a hairdryer. If I get up, if he’s still in bed I hear him get a hairdryer. Has he told you that it’s caught on fire before? The hairdryer is on cool, but one time he was cold, so it turned it to hot – and it blew up!”

Elsewhere in the podcast, she also told how she is so organised while her lads are so boisterous she has a rota for literally everything. She said: “It’s madness, it’s just mayhem all the time. We have a rota of who gets to sit at the front [of the car] going to school. Even though there is a rota, it’s just mayhem every morning.

“They just torment each other and it’s like a domino effect. It’s a lively house but it’s funny because everyone loves coming to our house, because it’s just entertaining. I grew up with two brothers, so I’m used to being around boys. I quite like the boys. Wayne would have liked a girl, and I think would I have clashed for a girl! Boys just get on with it and girls are more emotional.”

Last month, Coleen made her family proud as she came in second place after Danny Jones in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! She became a quick hit with fans, who praise her calm demeanour and down-to-earth personality.

Actor Kwaku Manu believes this is the end of Bawumia's leadership of the NPP Actor Kwaku Manu believes this is the end of Bawumia’s leadership of the NPP

Renowned Ghanaian actor and New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathiser, Kwaku Manu, has expressed his concerns about the party’s treatment of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In an interview sighted by GhanaWeb Entertainment, Manu claimed that the NPP would not allow Dr. Bawumia to stand for president again, suggesting that Nana Addo had used his power to bring Bawumia into prominence.

According to him, now that Nana Addo is no longer in power, the party will use its resources to assert control.

“As Nana Addo has left the NPP party, the party won’t allow Dr. Bawumia to stand for the president again. They feel like because Nana Addo is the president, he used his power to bring in Dr. Bawumia, so now that he is no longer in power, they would use their money and power to show him that the party was for them.

“Now, even the NPP members, when they meet Nana Addo and he misbehaves, they will tell him, ‘When you’re on the seat that’s when you have power, so since you’re no longer on the seat, nobody is scared of you,’” he said.

Reflecting on his past support for the NPP, Manu criticised Nana Addo’s handling of certain issues with chiefs and kings, implying that it was not appropriate.

“Sometimes, I can’t just believe that Nana Addo is not our president anymore. I remember campaigning for the NPP before, and the influence the party had in the country was strong. But the way Nana Addo handled certain things with the chiefs and kings wasn’t right,” he added.

Meanwhile, John Dramani Mahama was officially sworn in as Ghana’s president on January 7, 2025, at a ceremony held at the Black Star Square in Accra.

This event marked his return to the presidency, making him the first former leader of Ghana to be re-elected to the highest office of the land.

The inauguration was attended by over 30 heads of state and prime ministers, highlighting its significance on the global stage.

In his inaugural speech, Mahama emphasised themes of democracy, hope, and inclusivity, pledging to build a resilient healthcare system and foster gender equality.

Let me do my job – Professor Kwesi Aning seeks freedom to work after years of challenges under NPP

Prof. Kwesi Aning, a renowned security analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning, a renowned security analyst

Security consultant and academic, Professor Kwesi Aning, has described the last eight years under the Akufo-Addo administration as a difficult period in his professional life.

Speaking during an interview on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey monitored by MyNewsGh, he revealed that his ability to freely express himself and perform his duties had been significantly hindered, leading to what he termed a period of “hell.”

Reflecting on his experiences, Professor Aning said, “My expectation is to be able to speak the way I’ve always spoken. Earlier on, I could speak and write, and I went to bed in peace.

“You know, nobody threatened to cut my salary, nobody threatened to call my former bosses to dismiss me.”

His remarks highlight the challenges faced by professionals working in politically sensitive environments, where their independence can often be at odds with the expectations of those in power.

Aning, a seasoned expert on security and governance, further elaborated on his hopes for a better working environment under the new John Dramani Mahama administration.

“Give me the space to do my work, to help you, and to help the people of Ghana. I mean, it’s very straightforward,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professional autonomy to contribute meaningfully to national development.

‘Keep the lights on as we did’

Herbert Krapa, Former Energy Minister Herbert Krapa, Former Energy Minister

A former Minister for Energy under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government, Herbert Krapa, has rejected claims by the Co-Chairman of the Transition Team sub-committee on Energy and Natural Resources that the outgoing government left the nation’s energy sector on the brink of a power crisis.

According to Mr. Krapa, contrary to the assertion by Mr. John Jinapor, the Akufo-Addo government left behind a depleted stock of fuel supply for energy generation.

“I have read a statement from Hon. John Jinapor (MP), Co-Chairman of the Transition Team sub-committee on Energy and Natural Resources, in which he claims that ‘massive load shedding looms as Ghana’s fuel stock depletes’ and seeks to blame His Excellency President Akufo-Addo and his government for it. Mr. Jinapor is wrong. Load shedding does not ‘loom.’ It is caused either by technical or emergency power generation issues or a lack of competence in managing the power sector. Mr. Jinapor seems to be haunted clearly by the latter. By the time of leaving office, President Akufo-Addo’s government left in stock light crude oil, which Cenpower currently generates power with, while AKSA continues to take delivery of heavy fuel oil, which it generates power with. This fact is easily verifiable with a phone call to both power plants,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday, January 7, 2024.

Speaking on the sidelines of the presidential inauguration on Tuesday, Mr. Jinapor said available information indicated that the outgoing government had left in stock fuel that is sufficient for the generation of power for about five hours. He described the situation as troubling, emphasizing that the consequences could lead the nation into a serious power crisis.

But reacting to the statement in his Facebook post, Herbert Krapa maintained that the onus lies on the new government to ensure a consistent supply of power as the outgoing government had done.

“The responsibility of the new administration is to not only procure more liquid fuel to keep the lights on whenever liquid fuel becomes required to complement gas supply but also plan competently to avert power supply disruptions. We did it, and they can do it too. The NDC government should get to work as we did. The reason we kept the lights on for eight years, regardless of the difficult times, and stop the needless finger-pointing. That is not the way we kept the lights on,” he added.

The World Bank has indicated that it remains committed to fostering economic growth in African nations, particularly Ghana.

It promises to focus on financing key development initiatives in Ghana.

This was disclosed by Ousmane Diagana, Vice President for West and Central Africa at the World Bank, when he led a delegation to visit President John Mahama’s office in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

According to him, the World Bank is dedicated to supporting African countries in overcoming the challenges of sustainable economic growth.

“In the last couple of months since the arrival of the new president, Ajay Banga, there is a concept that we call the better and bigger World Bank. But we are now focusing on the better bank before actually getting to the bigger bank.

“So with the better bank, obviously the elements of ownership for government, client, and partnership will be the order complementing the financial assistance that we are providing with the knowledge aspect because as a global institution, obviously we work with all of the countries, and this has allowed us to gain a lot of experience.

“As we mentioned on the formality aspect, how we can bring resources into the economy, making sure that those are not part of financing the economy …In particular in West African countries, this challenge that Ghana is facing in that area is the same that we see in Senegal, Kenya, etc. So we are happy to bring our department working in the area into the conversation with Ghana and see how we can really widen the resource base, making sure that the domestic organisation part of financing the economy also increases.

“On cocoa, Ghana is one of those countries where we have prepared what we call the country climate and development, and we had indeed identified the potential that exists in the agricultural sector, in particular, the whole of cocoa, but at the same time the challenges the sector has faced.

“So we have some recommendations that the team can discuss at some point, and in that regard, see how we can use our existing programme because we have some dedicated programmes in order to contribute in that sector,” he added.

Why I want to be called ‘Osahene’

0

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has explained why he wants to be known as ‘Osahene’ Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

According to him, although it is not a chieftaincy title, it was conferred on him by his uncle, who is the Omanhene of the Efuttu Traditional Council.

He insist he has to be referred to as Osahene in the legislative house henceforth since he has earned the title.

Osahene Alexander Afenyo-Markin, however, did not explain the meaning of the title.

“Mr Speaker, when doing the registration, you’re supposed to fill title whether Dr. Mr, Alhaji, Professor and others. Mr Speaker, if the Honourable Majority Whip so pleases, I shall produce for purposes of the Hansard the origin of my title Osahene. It is a title conferred on me by my uncle the Omanhene of the Efuttu Traditional Council, and I’m to use it, and I prefer to use that title so I do not think that you should have any problem with it.

I’m of that family; he is my uncle, and it was not done in private, it was the traditional council that met, and officially, through custom, it was conferred on me. It is not a chieftaincy title. It is not a chieftaincy title. Mr Speaker I rest my case, I want to be known not as Mr but Osahene Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin and that is how I filled my form, it is my title just as people want to be called Mr, Dr and Alhaji, they’ve earned it,” he stated.

Traore’s weapon at inauguration draws sharp criticism from security analyst

Burkina Faso's Head of State, brahim Traoré Burkina Faso’s Head of State, brahim Traoré

Security consultant Professor Kwesi Anning has strongly criticized Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré for visibly carrying a pistol at his side during President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration ceremony in Accra.

In an interview on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Professor Anning described the incident as a significant breach of diplomatic protocol and expressed dismay at the display, particularly in the presence of high-profile dignitaries.

“What happened in Accra yesterday, which I’ve seen all over social media, was completely uncalled for,” he remarked.

“It was a breach of protocol, and many state officials and other dignitaries who were present might have wondered whether they were seeing correctly.”

The event, marking a pivotal moment in Ghana’s democratic history, brought leaders and representatives from across the continent to witness Mahama’s swearing-in. However, Traoré’s decision to attend with a sidearm raised eyebrows and sparked debates about diplomatic decorum and security arrangements at such events.

Professor Anning elaborated on customary practices for visiting heads of state and their security details.

“Normally, when a head of state travels with their security protocols, the weapons remain on the plane, with the understanding that the host country will provide maximum security,” he explained.

He dismissed arguments defending Traoré’s action, particularly those suggesting the pistol was part of his uniform.

“That does not hold water at all,” he asserted. “This was a major breach of protocol, especially when heads of state were present, and our own newly installed president was being greeted.”

Power crisis looms as government needs $90m to avert ‘dumsor’ – GRIDCo report

0

The country’s power grid is on the brink of a major crisis as the government urgently requires nearly $90 million to secure fuel for thermal power plants, according to a report by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

The report warns of potential power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” if immediate action is not taken.

GRIDCo’s report highlights that the funds are needed to purchase liquid fuel, such as light crude oil, to keep thermal plants in Tema operational and meet rising electricity demand.

The shortage stems from a generation capacity deficit following a pigging exercise by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO).

This maintenance activity temporarily disrupted natural gas supplies, leaving thermal plants without sufficient fuel.

To address the imminent crisis, GRIDCo has outlined several measures to stabilise the grid, including:

1. Rescheduling Maintenance: Revising planned shutdowns of generators to avoid overlapping with the WAPCO maintenance period.

2. Alternative Fuels: Procuring sufficient light crude oil or other liquid fuels to replace natural gas in thermal power generation.

3. Load Management: Considering load-shedding as a last resort to stabilize the grid if power shortages persist.

Pipeline Maintenance Delayed to 2025

The crisis was exacerbated by the maintenance of gas pipelines from Nigeria to Ghana by WAPCO, initially scheduled for October 2024 but postponed to January 2025 by the previous government.

This delay left the system vulnerable to disruptions during the maintenance period.

“There is a deficit in generation capacity during the period of the WAPCO pigging exercise. Therefore, it is necessary to procure liquid fuel to operate thermal plants in Tema to meet demand,” the report stated.

GRIDCo stated that $89.90 million is urgently required to avert the looming power outages and ensure grid stability.

The report warns that failure to act swiftly could lead to prolonged power outages, severely disrupting economic activities and public services.

Industries, businesses, and households may face significant challenges if the government does not secure funding and implement the recommended measures.

Stakeholders have called for expedited government intervention to raise the necessary funds and execute GRIDCo’s recommendations.

The urgency of the situation has sparked nationwide concern, with many fearing a return to the dreaded era of frequent and unpredictable power cuts.

As the clock ticks, the onus is on the government to act decisively and prevent Ghana from slipping into a full-blown power crisis.

Report suspected infiltrators of government institutions

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Nii Ashie Moore The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Nii Ashie Moore

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Ashie Moore, has called on party members to remain vigilant and report any suspected unlawful activities in connection with infiltration of government institutions to appropriate authorities.

He pointed out the importance of following due process, urging party members to avoid taking matters into their own hands.

Ashie Moore also warned against engaging in revengeful actions that could undermine the credibility of their complaints.

In a video shared on X by CITI FM, Ashie Moore said, “Let me use this opportunity to encourage members of our party in this region to be vigilant, rather to make sure that they will report such unlawful activities to me as a regional chairman or to the appropriate authorities at the regional police command for them to take a lawful action rather than to go there and to be accused of that things that we’re complaining of is what we’ve come to massively engage in.”

The NDC chairman also addressed allegations that certain individuals suspected to be members of the NDC were engaging in illegal operations at the Tema Harbor, government establishments and warehouses, while he was waiting for some party faithfuls at the airport.

“Currently, I’m at the airport to welcome some NDC faithful… But the allegation was made that they were at Tema harbour and some government establishment and some warehouse. That was the allegation that was made,” he noted.

Moore also disclosed that he had met with the regional police commander and his team to ensure that state establishments and institutions in the region are adequately protected.

He further assured that law and order will prevail within the next 24 hours.

He said, “Today, I’ve had a meeting with the regional commander and his team and we’ve all agreed that they are now going to make sure they protect this state establishments and institutions. So, I can promise you that within 24 hours, everything will become a law and order prevail within the region.”
