This is captured in the IMF’s latest financial statements and quarterly reports ending October 31, 2024.
Specifically, the facility classified under concessional lending is offered at low interest rates, with the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT) providing financial support to low-income countries on favourable terms within one to three years.
Ethiopia emerged first with an IMF debt of 2.256 billion SDR, while Zambia placed third with an SDR indebtedness of 1.272 billion.
Following in fourth and fifth positions were Kenya and Ivory Coast, respectively. The remaining SDR (44 %) were owed to the IMF by other countries.
In terms of regional breakdown of the outstanding poverty loans, Africa held a chunk amounting to 78% percent.
The least regional receiver was Europe. It accounted for only one percent.
Ghana along with Zambia, has defaulted on its debt obligations compelling both countries to seek financial assistance from the Fund.
In particular, Ghana in 2023 turned to the IMF for economic assistance amid severe financial challenges.
A $3 billion bailout was approved under the IMF Extended Credit Facility (ECF) to help stabilize the economy.
Ghana has so far received $1.92 billion from the program with the outstanding tranches expected in the coming months.

Nkrumah Mausoleum a unique place for Africans to learn- Diagana

Accra, Jan 8, GNA – Mr. Ousmane Diagana, World Bank Regional Vice President, has urged Africans to use the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial and Mausoleum Park as a hub for learning and promoting Pan-Africanism and continental development.
He stressed that the vision and ideals of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, would keep inspiring future generations of Africans, making the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial and Mausoleum Park an important center for history, culture, and education.
Mr. Diagana made these remarks after touring the museum, which underwent renovations funded by a US$3.5 million grant from the World Bank.
The upgrades included the addition of a Presidential Library, Freedom Hall, an amphitheatre, an audio-visual tunnel, and a new water fountain.
“The museum is a unique place for Africans, but beyond Africans, for the entire world to come here to learn from the life, the accomplishment and the legacy of this great leader, Dr Kwame Nkrumah,” he said.
Encouraging other Africans to visit the tourist center, Mr. Diagana remarked, ” I will come back next time with my entire family, because this will be extremely important for many to learn from the life of this exceptional leader.”
He expressed the World Bank’s pleasure in being part of the museum’s expansion, emphasizing the bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ghana’s development.
Mr. Robert Taliercio O’Brien, the World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, also noted, “It’s truly inspirational to visit here and learn about the life of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”
“I’ve also been inspired by many of the quotes and writings of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, including the one where he talks about how to measure progress. And it’s really progress about the development of the citizens of Ghana,” he said.
Mr. O’Brien stated that development should be gauged by the number of citizens with access to clean water and electricity, the extent of road infrastructure, and the number of children receiving an education in schools.

The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, has stated that his predecessor, Kobina Tahir Hammond, underestimated his chances of winning the seat in the December 7 parliamentary elections.
Speaking in an interview on Kasapa FM on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Godwin Dorani attributed his victory to consistent hard work and the trust of his constituents.
“He took me for granted; he thought I was a small boy. He has been in Parliament for a very long time and has amassed much wealth. That is why I thank my constituents for believing in me, trusting me, and giving me this victory. I didn’t relax — I worked so hard. Ghana is second most indebted African country to IMF in concessional lending
Ghana remains heavily indebted to the International Monetary Fund
Recent reports indicate that Ghana is the second most indebted country to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Africa regarding Concessional Lending and the Debt Relief Trust.
A report by myjoyonline.com on January 9, 2025, stated that Ghana’s exposure to the IMF stood at 2.242 billion Special Drawing Rights (SDR), equivalent to $2.914 billion as of October 31, 2024.
Ghana has consistently ranked among the top 10 borrowers from the IMF and was previously the most indebted nation in West Africa.
Currently, Ghana is second only to the Democratic Republic of Congo, which holds the highest indebtedness to the IMF at 2.256 billion SDR. Zambia ranked third, with an indebtedness of 1.272 billion SDR.
Ghana’s exposure represents 17% of the total borrowings by African countries from the IMF. Both Ghana and Zambia have defaulted on their loans, prompting them to seek further assistance from the IMF.
According to the IMF’s Quarterly Finances, Ghana’s outstanding concessional loans to the Bretton Woods institution were higher than recorded in July 2024.
These loans are categorized as concessional lending, offering low-interest financing.
Many African countries have grown increasingly reliant on the IMF as they seek to address significant economic challenges.
However, acquiring substantial debt from the IMF often requires nations to adopt restrictive economic reforms known as Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs).
As a result, the IMF’s role in Africa has long been a subject of controversy, raising questions about whether borrowing from the global financier is ultimately more harmful than beneficial.

The President submitted the following ministerial nominations to the Speaker of Parliament in accordance with Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson
Forson is an Economist, Chartered Accountant, and Tax Practitioner with extensive experience in public finance, macroeconomics, fiscal policy, tax policy, and business management.
A five-term lawmaker, Dr Forson holds a PhD in Finance from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Master of Science degrees in Taxation and Economics from the University of Oxford and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, respectively. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from London South Bank University.
John Abdulai Jinapor brings a wealth of hands-on experience, competence, and know-how to the energy portfolio. With his extensive qualifications, particularly in energy economics and finance, he is expected to bring much-needed dynamism and capabilities to transform the energy sector.
Hon. Jinapor holds a Master of Arts Degree (MA) in Economic Policy Management, an MBA in Marketing and a Master of Science (MSc) in Development Finance from the University of Ghana. Chad say military foiled armed assault on presidential complex, 19 killed

At least 19 people have been killed in Chad where security forces said they had prevented an attempt by armed fighters to storm the presidential complex in the capital N’Djamena.
At least 18 of a force of 24 armed men were killed in the failed assault on the president’s office on Wednesday evening, the government said, and one member of the security forces also died in the gun battles.
“There were 18 dead and six injured” among the attackers “and we suffered one death and three injured, one of them seriously”, Chad’s foreign minister and government spokesman Abderaman Koulamallah said.
Hours after the shooting, Koulamallah appeared in a video, surrounded by soldiers and with a gun on his belt, saying, “The situation is completely under control … the destabilisation attempt was put down.”
The attack coincided with an official visit by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Chad.
Hours before the shooting erupted, Wang Yi had met with Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby and other senior officials.
Deby was in the presidential complex at the time of the attack, according to Koulamallah
In a statement following the incident, China’s foreign ministry said it firmly supports Chad in its effort to keep the country safe and stable.
When asked at a regular news briefing about the deadly gunfire, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman noted that Wang had concluded his visit to the African country.
Deby seized power after rebels killed his father, longstanding President Idriss Deby, in 2021. The older Deby had ruled Chad since a coup in the early 1990s.
A security source told the French news agency AFP news agency that the attackers were members of the Boko Haram armed group, but Koulamallah later said they were “probably not” rebels, describing them instead as drunken “Pieds Nickeles” – a reference to a French comic featuring hapless crooks.
A security source also told the Reuters news agency that the incident was likely an “attempted terrorist attack”.
“Individuals in three vehicles attacked the military camps around the president’s office, but the army neutralised them,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Residents in the area described hearing loud volleys of gunfire.
The attack comes less than two weeks after Chad held a contested general election that the government hailed as a key step towards ending military rule, but that was marked by low turnout and opposition allegations of fraud.
A call by the opposition for voters to boycott the polls left the field open for candidates aligned with the president.
The former French colony, which is rich in oil resources but one of the poorest countries in Africa, hosted France’s last military bases in the region known as the Sahel, but at the end of November, ended defence and security agreements with Paris, calling them “obsolete”.
About 1,000 French military personnel were stationed in the country and are in the process of being withdrawn. Their departure follows after France was driven out of three Sahelian countries governed by military governments hostile to Paris: Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
Senegal and Ivory Coast have also asked France to vacate military bases on their territory.

Minority Decries NDC’s Nationwide Violence, Thuggery

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed grave concerns over escalating acts of violence, thuggery, and institutional takeovers allegedly perpetrated by individuals linked to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus described the incidents as a “dangerous assault” on the country’s democratic values and called for immediate action from President John Dramani Mahama and the security agencies.
Addressing a press conference in Parliament, the Caucus led by the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, said the nation had recently witnessed a series of coordinated disruptions, particularly in key national institutions post-2024 elections.
The Minority pointed to notable incidents at Tema Port, Kofordua, and Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
According to the Caucus, at the Tema Port, NDC loyalists reportedly attempted to take control, demanding the removal of non-NDC employees.
For the Koforidua, the Minority indicated that offices of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and National Service Scheme (NSS) were locked up by the NDC thugs.
In the case of TOR, the Minority Caucus noted that the NDC thugs invaded the facility, sacked workers, and locked the premises.
The Deputy Minority Leader said the hooligans purportedly claimed they are carrying out their illegal activities under the banner, “Resetting Ghana to enable us to get the Ghana we want.”
Unconstitutional Precedent
Ms. Appiagyei accused President Mahama of exacerbating the situation with the establishment of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) Committee prior to his inauguration.
The committee, tasked with reclaiming allegedly misappropriated assets from the previous administration, was described as unconstitutional and beyond the mandate of a President-elect under the Presidential Transition Act, 2012.
“The ORAL Committee’s rhetoric has emboldened party loyalists to act outside the law,” Ms. Appiagyei stated, adding that it signaled a disregard for the rule of law and due process.
Targeting
The Caucus noted the disturbing trend of civil servants and public officers being targeted by mobs, including forced evictions from their homes and offices.
According to the Caucus, judicial officers and other public servants have faced threats, vandalism, and violence, creating an atmosphere of fear.
“Public servants must not live in fear simply for doing their jobs. Ghana’s democracy cannot thrive if its institutions and personnel are under siege,” she emphasized.
Call to Action
The Minority Caucus appealed to President Mahama to demonstrate decisive leadership by condemning the acts of violence and intimidation and directing law enforcement to investigate and prosecute offenders impartially.
They also want the President to reassure Ghanaians of his commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law.
“To our security agencies, we urge you to uphold the Constitution and enforce the law without fear or favor. Ghanaians are counting on you to restore order,” Ms. Appiagyei said.
The Deputy Minority Leader again called on all Ghanaians to reject violence and uphold democracy.
“Ghana is bigger than any political party or individual. We are a nation of laws, and our institutions must serve all citizens, regardless of political affiliations,” Ms. Appiagyei affirmed.
The Deputy Minority Leader stressed that safeguarding democracy requires collective effort and vigilance, urging all stakeholders to work toward a peaceful and democratic Ghana.

Ghanaians will punish any government that refuses to deliver on its mandate

The Director of Election and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has urged the Mahama-led administration to prioritise accountability, humility, and truthfulness as it steps into governance.
Dr. Boamah emphasised the need for the NDC to learn from past mistakes and focus on delivering on its mandates to avoid the punishment of Ghanaians.
He further highlighted the importance of being transparent with citizens, especially in times of challenges.
“We went into this election, yes, I had predicted 57.3%, but many disagreed. What this should tell us is that Ghanaians will punish any government that refuses to deliver on its mandate. For me, this is what our party must take into account as some of our people step into government. We must keep this at the back of our minds and serve the good people of Ghana in humility. Where it is impossible to do it, we should be truthful to the people of Ghana and tell them this is not possible, or that it will take some time to fix it. We should be truthful,” he noted in a video shared on X by Metro TV on January 9, 2024.
The Director of Elections and IT expressed concern over the state of government institutions, describing them as decaying and pervasive.
He mentioned the Electoral Commission and the Judicial Service as examples of institutions that need reforms.
“There are a lot of our institutions that are decaying, and it’s pervasive. Look at the Electoral Commission, look at the judiciary, and many others. We need to right the wrongs. Mahama makes first cabinet appointments

Accra, Jan 09, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has submitted his first batch of ministerial nominations to the Speaker of Parliament for vetting and approval.
This is in accordance with Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
The nominees are Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Minister of Finance Designate; Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy Designate; and Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayini, Attorney -General and Minister of Justice Designate.
Profile of Ministerial Nominees:
Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson is an Economist, Chartered Accountant, and Tax Practitioner with extensive experience in public finance, macroeconomics, fiscal policy, tax policy, and business management.
A five-term lawmaker, Dr Forson holds a PhD in Finance from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Master of Science degrees in Taxation and Economies from the University of Oxford and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, respectively.
He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from London South Bank University.
John Abdul Jinapor
Mr John Abdulai Jinapor brings a wealth of hands-on experience, competence, and know-how to the energy portfolio.
With his extensive qualifications, particularly in energy economics and finance, he is expected to bring much-needed dynamism and capabilities to transform the energy sector.

Israel Commits To Invest in Ghana’s Solar Energy System
The Ambassador of the State of Israel to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has announced his government’s commitment to invest in Ghana’s solar energy system to enhance the country’s electricity supply.
According to Ambassador Gilad, this investment in solar energy can contribute to a more consistent and reliable electricity supply while promoting sustainability, energy independence, and economic growth.
The initiative aims to reduce Ghana’s reliance on fossil fuels, thereby enhancing energy security and mitigating the impact of price volatility.
“Israel has demonstrated significant economic progress, particularly in developing industries and advancing technology. Given the abundant sunlight in Ghana, Israel possesses cutting-edge technology in solar energy that could support the country’s development in this field,” stated Amb. Gilad.

The Deputy Minister assured potential visitors that Israel is safe for travel and that the nation is well-prepared to handle extreme situations.

Kejetia traders worried over recent market fires
Traders at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi are growing increasingly uneasy following recent fire outbreaks in major markets across the country earlier this month. They are calling on the government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to ensure the safety and security of their market.
The traders expressed concerns about the lack of support and reconstruction efforts following a fire that gutted part of the Kejetia Market two years ago. According to them, the affected shops remain unrepaired, leaving many traders stranded and unable to work.
President of the Federation of Traders at Kejetia Market, Nana Kwesi Prempeh said the recent fire incidents in places like Katamanto, Kwadaso Wood Market, and Tamale Timber Market have heightened their fears.
“These recent fire outbreaks make us very apprehensive because two years ago, we experienced a similar situation here at Kejetia. Unfortunately, repair works have not been done, and traders affected by the fire have been left on their own. We have also heard rumours of attempts to cause arson in markets during election periods, which has kept us on high alert,” he said.
The Ashanti Regional Office of the Ghana National Fire Service has also cautioned traders to adhere to fire safety protocols. A representative of the service advised market managers and traders to strictly enforce rules, such as prohibiting cooking in the markets.
“Some traders secretly use gas cylinders in the market despite the ban. They should remember that their investments are at risk, and if a fire destroys the market, it is their livelihood that suffers,” the officer said.
Nana Kwesi Prempeh has called for an emergency meeting involving market managers, traders, and government officials to address fire safety concerns. He proposed strict enforcement of market bylaws, including regulating opening and closing times, to reduce the risk of fires.
Traders are urging authorities to prioritise the safety of the Kejetia Market, noting that delays in addressing these issues could lead to more losses and disruptions to their businesses.

Belgian Foreign Minister backs Ghana’s economic development plan
Mr Bernard Quintin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade, and the Federal Cultural Institution of Belgium, has hailed Ghana’s robust economic development agenda to create opportunities and enhance intra-African and global trade.
He expressed satisfaction with Ghana’s cocoa, which was produced partly for the national market and export.
“It is important to export to have forex to make your economy work and translate into a better social life,” he said at a press briefing in Accra.
Mr Quintin was directed by Ms Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, to represent the European Union (EU) at the inauguration ceremony of President-elect John Mahama on January 7, 2025.
The inauguration ceremony is a significant moment for Ghana, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history.
The high-level EU delegation has demonstrated commitment to Ghana as a partner in sustainable and inclusive development and regional security.
Mr Quintin was impressed by the number of more than 20 heads of state who were present at the inauguration ceremony.
Mr Quintin’s visit demonstrated the importance of the relations between Belgium, the European Union, and Ghana and the shared desire to strengthen the partnership in the political, economic, and human domains.
“It is so important to come for this ceremony because Ghana is a very important partner of Belgium and the European Union in Western Africa, not only in trade traditionally, but also in security matters.
“The EU has become Ghana’s first partner in security matters,” he said.
As the EU’s representative, he reaffirmed the EU-Ghana partnership priorities on job creation, economic diversification, sustainability, regional security, and others.
He met with Ghanaian and African leaders to discuss key issues such as the security situation in the Sahel, the fight against jihadism, and economic development opportunities.
These matters, the Belgian Foreign Minister stressed, were of common concern and underlined the importance of effective collaboration between European and African partners.
He expressed happiness about the programme of President John Mahama and his new administration, particularly with the accountability and the fight against corruption.
“We do think that accountability is important, and we certainly support this new administration in this business-minded environment and all the important elements that were said in President Mahama’s inauguration speech,” he said.
President Mahama’s four key policy areas are economic restoration and stabilization, improvement of the business and investment environment, governance and constitutional reforms, accountability, and the fight against corruption.
Mr Quintin and his team had an audience and lunch with Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, met with Omar Touray, President of ECOWAS, and had bilateral meetings with regional leaders.
The team also visited Niche Cocoa, a Ghanaian company receiving Belgian funding via BIO-Invest.

Old students of Wesley Girls Senior High School have taken to social media to celebrate a historic moment for Ghana and their alma mater.
This was on the back of the coming into office of Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the first female vice president of the Republic of Ghana.
Professor Naana Jane Opuku-Agyemang was sworn in on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square, where she took her vice presidential oath of office.
Reacting to this historic achievement, two alumni of the Wesley Girls took to TikTok to mock their rivals, bragging that their school has produced Ghana’s first female vice president in the person of Professor Naana Jane.
In the TikTok video sighted by YEN.com.gh, the two ladies, clad in their school’s uniform, danced to the Kwen Kwen campaign song of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Mood because even if you say Geyhey lost NSMQ, we can say bring your vice president and CJ,” the caption on the video read.
Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang is an old student of the Wesley Girls Senior High School, completing her secondary education in 1971.
After her time at the Central Region-based secondary school, Professor Naana Jane enrolled at the University of Cape Coast, where she was awarded a B.Ed.(Hons) in English and French in 1977.
Before breaking the glass ceiling as Ghana’s first female vice president, Professor Naana Jane previously served as the minister of education between 2013 and 2016.
She had also earlier set the record as the first female vice-chancellor of a public university in Ghana, serving the University of Cape Coast until her subsequent appointment as the education minister.

Mahama takes presidential oath of office
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that President Mahama took his presidential oath of office as the sixth president of the Republic of Ghana.
This makes Mr Mahama the first Ghanaian president to take the oath of office three times.
He previously took the oath in 2012 following the passing of President Atta Mills, and then in 2013 after winning the 2012 presidential election.
Mozambique tense as opposition leader returns from exile
Mozambique’s opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane
Mozambique’s opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane has returned home from exile where he has been in hiding following October’s disputed presidential election that sparked deadly protests.
Mondlane landed at the main airport in the capital, Maputo, on Thursday morning amid tension and heavy security, with thousands of people having gathered to welcome him.
He said he was returning to be closer to the protest movement that has seen weeks of nationwide demonstrations in which dozens of people have been killed.
His return comes ahead of next week’s swearing-in as president of Daniel Chapo, of the ruling Frelimo party, who was confirmed as the winner of October’s poll by the constitutional court.
After having emerged from the airport building, video shows Mondlane kneeling on the ground with a Bible in his hand being cheered by supporters.
He began to pray and swore to serve the people of Mozambique as the president elected by the people and not by a court.
In his first comments Mondlane said that he was ready to talk about how to resolve the tension over the disputed poll, which he says was stolen from him.
“I’m here in the flesh to say that if you want to negotiate… I’m here,” he said.
Mondlane has been organising protests through broadcasts on Facebook, but over the weekend announced his impending return, saying they “don’t need to chase me anymore”.
In a defiant message he said: “If [the authorities] want they can kill me, but the fight will continue”.
Ahead of his landing, the airport was heavily guarded with police officers trying to prevent Mondlane’s supporters from reaching the area.
Roads leading to the airport were blocked with security forces restricting people from getting to the airport unless they had a ticket for a flight.
Tear gas was fired on crowds in the area and snipers were positioned on buildings nearby, the Reuters news agency reports.
Mondlane said his return was “a unilateral decision” that did not result from any political agreement.
He maintains he won the election and has previously said he would install himself as president on 15 January.
The final official results from the constitutional court two weeks ago gave Chapo 65% of the vote and Mondlane 24%.
Since the October election, waves of protests have left more than 270 people including protesters, children and members of the security forces dead, according to rights groups.
Asokwa Municipal Assembly expresses concern about attacks on assembly members

Kumasi Jan 09 – GNA – The Asokwa Municipal Assembly has condemned the unprovoked attacks by alleged NDC foot soldiers on some assembly members in the municipality.
Nana Yaw Wiredu, the Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly, said the violent attacks being orchestrated by certain elements in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), if not stopped immediately could degenerate into conflict in the municipality.
In a statement issued in Kumasi, Nana Wiredu pointed out that, the physical attack on Mr Raymond Opoku Agyemang, the Assembly Member for Atonsu-Agogo South electoral area, by some NDC foot soldiers over an Astroturf on Tuesday January 08, 2025, was uncalled for and needed to be investigated.
Mr Opoku Agyeman was said to have received severe beatings from the thugs when he tried to mediate in a confrontation between the NDC foot soldiers and management of a local football club in the area on the use of the newly constructed Astroturf in the electoral area.
The NDC thugs, allegedly led by one Issaka, invaded the park while the team was training and demanded their immediate vacation from the park.
Despite attempts by the team Manager to resolve the issue amicably, the foot soldiers remained adamant, and this resulted in altercations between the thugs and the management of the team.
Mr Opoku Agyeman, who was notified about the situation and was invited to intervene, was subjected to severe beatings.
Attempts to explain that the football team had received official approval from the Municipal assembly to use the park did not go down well as the thugs numbering about 20 subjected him and other team managers to severe beatings.
Nana Wiredu in the statement described the assault as appalling and intolerable and called on law enforcement authorities to promptly investigate the matter and ensure that the culprits faced the full rigours of the law.
He expressed dismay at the behavior of the NDC foot soldiers, urging the Asokwa Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and mete out appropriate sanctions on the perpetrators.
Nana Wiredu called on the NDC leadership in the Ashanti region and the Asokwa constituency to immediately rein in their members, to desist from such acts since such intimidation and violence would not be tolerated by the Municipal Assembly.
He further mentioned that the Assembly had complied with directives regarding the removal of government appointees, emphasizing that this should have facilitated a seamless transition instead of hostility.
Nana Wiredu assured the Assembly Members of their safety, vowing that the Assembly, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, would take measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
He encouraged the assembly members to remain composed as the process of appointing a new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and other government appointees progressed in an orderly manner.
He said all procedures leading to the appointment of a new MCE and other government appointees would be executed smoothly and peacefully.

Ghanaians Urged To Prioritize Regular Exercise

PRESIDENT OF the 4 Garrison Officers’ Mess Keep-fit Club (Ridge) in Kumasi, Kwasi Badu, has encouraged more Ghanaians to join Keep-fit clubs to engage in fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle.
He explained that sedentary live styles lead to so many ailments, hence the call for a regular exercise to release unwanted materials from the body to enhance their health.
Mr. Badu said these during an annual dinner organised by the club to support the needy.
At the event, a cheque of GH¢160,000 was given to eight orphanages in the region for their upkeep. The money was solicited through individual contributions from the members of the club.
The beneficiaries include Obeng Kwakye Foundation, Ashan Children’s Home, Kumasi Cheshire Home and Cherubs Home.
Others are Frhab Ghana Charity Foundation, Perfect Peace Foundation, Blessed School and Missionary of Mercy.
Presenting a cheque of GH¢20,000 to each of the beneficiaries, Mr. Badu stated that the gesture was part of the club’s areas of focus and contributions to help put smiles on the faces of the children and other less privileged in society.
“As a Keep-fit club, the passion to help the needy in the society is something that we all cheerish most. When you pay a visit to any of the orphanages here, the conditions there are so horrible that sometimes if you are not careful you may end up crying so we took it upon ourselves to lend a helping hand to them,” he said.
He pledged the club’s readiness to continue to improve the lives of the less privileged in society, and appealed to the heads of the beneficiary foundations to use the money judiciously and for its intended purposes for the well-being of the children.
Mr. Badu called on other groups to support the orphanages to render quality care and support.
He seized the opportunity to invite male interested individuals to join them. “We are about 121 members, and I will appeal to anyone who is interested in exercise to join us,” he added.
Some of the children who accompanied their heads to the event prayed for God’s blessings for the members of the club.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Frhab Ghana Charity Foundation, who spoke on behalf of the other beneficiaries thanked the Keep-fit Club members and urged other corporate bodies and groups to emulate the kind gesture to assist their facilities.

The debate between the two distinguished media personalities stemmed from Kwesi Pratt’s admiration of the loud cheers that erupted from the crowd at Black Star Square during President John Dramani Mahama’s investiture on January 7.
This occurred when the military leader of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, was introduced moments before stepping onto the podium to exchange pleasantries with Mahama.
Reacting to the moment, which has since sparked widespread conversation among Ghanaians, Kwesi Pratt described it as a public endorsement of military leadership over democratically elected leaders. He pointed out that the military leader received the loudest applause from the crowd compared to the other democratically elected leaders who attended the event.
Kwesi Pratt explained that the loud cheers in response to Traore’s presence spoke volumes, emphasising that it represented a public endorsement of military coup d’etats and the opposition to various issues plaguing many African countries.
He specifically highlighted concerns such as neo-colonialism, the struggle for Africans to gain control over their own resources for their benefit, among other challenges.
He was however, sharply interjected by Kweku Baako whose opinion opposed military takeovers.
Expressing his strong disapproval of military takeovers, Kweku Baako argued that such actions have not brought any positive benefits to the continent, citing how past military leaders who assumed power often turned into dictators.
He emphasised that this is precisely why past leaders fought to restore constitutional order, ensuring that leaders are democratically elected.

WAPCo’s offshore pigging exercise could trigger energy supply risks

The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has raised concerns over the timing of the planned maintenance activities on the offshore West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), warning that the exercise could expose Ghana to significant energy supply risks.
The mandatory maintenance operation, set to run from January 20 to February 16, 2025, involves cleaning, inspecting and replacing sub-sea valves along the pipeline. Initially slated for October 2024, the schedule was deferred at the request of the Ministry of Energy, according to a statement issued by Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
Nana Amoasi VII, in an interview with B&FT, while citing that the rescheduling raises critical questions, noted the need for adequate preparations for the supply of liquid fuel to power plants in the eastern corridor of the country.
This is given that the current arrangements will starve these plants of natural gas supply. But with the current liquid fuel shortage, he maintained that the country could be put through another period of ‘dumsor.’
The WAGP serves as a critical infrastructure for delivering natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana, Togo and Benin, fuelling power plants and supporting industrial activities. A disruption in its operations, even temporarily, could strain energy production capacity and potentially lead to power outages or increased reliance on costly alternative energy sources.
The IES Director stressed the importance of creating room for additional liquefied fuel supplies before proceeding with the maintenance work. “If not, considering the current challenges onshore, going ahead with the clean-up offshore will impact fuel supply.”
He also urged GRIDCo to engage the government to extend the execution of the exercise, ensuring preparedness and dispelling any notions that the timing is politically motivated.
Nana Amoasi VII further suggested that proper engagement with the government would enable GRIDCo to conduct a more comprehensive risk assessment of any further rescheduling.
He expressed scepticism about the planned duration of the maintenance, citing previous exercises by the company with exceeded timelines.
“If you defer a planned maintenance unnecessarily, then you are accepting that there can be a false shutdown of the system,” he said. Such delays, he warned, could lead to larger challenges, underscoring the importance of thorough and timely preparation.
GRIDCo’s report on the impending exercise stated that a total of 180 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas is consumed by the Sunon Asogli Plant, Cenpower, KTPP, TT1PP, AKSA, and Bridge Power plants in Tema.
During the pigging period, the WAGP lateral in Tema will be closed, leading to no gas supply for these thermal plants – except those capable of running on liquid fuel. This will require the shutdown of several gas-fired plants in Tema, reducing generation capacity.
Meanwhile, thermal plants in the Western Region—TAPCo, TICo, Karpower, and Twin City—consume about 230 mmscfd of natural gas. Additionally, Anwomaso Thermal Power Station in Kumasi and Genser Energy Power Stations together consume 75 mmscfd of gas. Non-power sectors in the West account for another 35 mmscfd.
With domestic gas production from ENI and Tullow providing a total of 345 mmscfd, the region’s supply will be sufficient to meet demand; even accommodating the 80–90 mmscfd delivered from Nigeria via the WAGP.
To facilitate the pigging exercise, gas production from ENI and Tullow will need to be adjusted to balance supply and consumption. GRIDCo also plans to dispatch hydro plants at high capacity during the maintenance period to offset the thermal generation shortfall in Tema. Akosombo GS is projected to run all six units continuously, while Bui GS will operate its units in staggered shifts to maximise output.
However, the report noted that a deficit in generation capacity is still anticipated, emphasising the urgent need to procure liquid fuel to sustain thermal plants in Tema. An estimated US$89.9million is required to purchase the necessary liquid fuel to meet demand during this period.

A member of the Black Satellites team that won the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, Philip Boampong, has slammed Andre Dede Ayew for allegedly signing an insurance deal without the players’ knowledge.
In his narration, Boampong noted that after they won the tournament, team captain Dede Ayew and some officials signed a deal without seeking the opinion of the entire team.
The defender stated that the deal involved an insurance policy that the players were supposed to benefit from for 15 years.
However, because they had not been informed, none of the players benefited, despite having funds deducted from the financial reward package which was given to them.
During an interview with Global Sports Studios, Boampong expressed his displeasure over how Dede Ayew handled the deal without the players’ knowledge.
“There was an investment, and he [Dede Ayew] was part of it, but we did not know anything about it. We were called for a general meeting and informed about an insurance policy. It was supposed to cover us for fifteen years in case of injuries, but we didn’t know.
“If we had known, we would have sought treatment when we got injured. So, with over 22 players, we were deducted some amount of money, yet we didn’t benefit. At least, he should have told us,” Boampong said in Twi during the interview.

Ablekuma-North: Presiding Officer lays down his tools, re-collation suspended

Accra, Jan. 09, GNA – Mr Vincent Obeng, the Presiding Officer for the Ablekuma-North Constituency, says he cannot continue with the re-collation of the disputed parliamentary results due to “frustration” and chaos that has characterised the exercise.
The EC on Wednesday suspended the re-collation exercise for Ablekuma-North for the fifth consecutive time after hours of altercation over the validity of the statement of results sheets for the collation.
The results for three polling stations are outstanding.
The EC cannot declare the results unless the remaining three are verified and added to the tabulated results.
The Commission said it would communicate its next line of action in due course.
The EC has been relying on the scanned copies of the statement of results sheets from the political parties to collate the results for some 62 polling stations whose pink sheets got missing following the close of polls.
For some 20 polling stations results that could not be verified independently by the Returning Officer, he summoned the Presiding Officers in the effected polling stations to assist with the authentication.
Ahead of Wednesday’s re-collation, there were seven outstanding polling station results yet to be verified.
After hours of heated exchanges between agents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Commission was able to authenticate the results for four out of the seven outstanding polling stations.
Mr Obeng, who was visibly exhausted by the turn of events, expressed frustration about the protracted impasse and urged the Commission to find a new Returning Officer to complete the work.
“It is so unfortunate for me to make this statement that I am done with Ablekuma North. They should find a new Returning Officer to continue their work for them,” he said.
Dr Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training, EC, said the Commission would engage the Returning Officer to rescind his decision.
“The EC has no interest in who becomes the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North,” he said.
Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma-North, said her independent collation suggested that she was leading by more than 300 votes.
“I will fight till the end because I know I won,” she told journalists.
However, Mr Musah Kalamu, Ablekuma-North Constituency Organiser, NDC, said the Party would not accept the results for the 62 polling stations in contention.
“We want a rerun of the elections in the 62 polling stations. We cannot accept the scanned copies of the results presented by the NPP,” he said.

Yet, eight years later, he has staged a remarkable comeback, securing the largest victory in nominal terms under the 4th Republic.
Today, the NPP faces its moment of reckoning after a painful and humiliating defeat. But this is not the end of the party; it is only a test of its resilience. Moving forward, the party must commit to honest, open, and constructive dialogue within its structures to assess what went wrong, acknowledge missteps, and draw valuable lessons. This internal process will lay the foundation for genuine reconciliation, renewal, and progress, anchored in unity.
The NPP’s history is rich with the sweat, sacrifice, and toil of its founding fathers, who faced countless setbacks but never surrendered. From the ashes of defeat, they built a party rooted in principles, courage, and perseverance—a legacy that must inspire us today. It is this same spirit of determination and unity that the NPP must harness to rise again.
The next year must be a period of rebuilding and restoration. The focus should be on strengthening internal bonds, engaging all voices, and charting a new course with clarity and purpose. This is a time for sobriety, reflection, and decisive action, driven by a shared responsibility to uphold the party’s values and future.
No candidate can lead the party back to power unless the foundation of the party itself is strengthened and united. Ahenu urges Mahama to tackle barriers in local government, social welfare

Sunyani, Jan. 9, GNA – Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the civil society and local government actor, says the nation requires a comprehensive approach that tackles barriers in indigenous governance, social welfare, and economic development in her reset and reconstruction.
That welcomes a strengthened public institution, realistic anti-corruption measures and law enforcement, participatory governance, diversified economy, infrastructure development, industrialisation, and entrepreneurship.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Ahenu also the Chief Executive Officer of the Sunyani-based Global Media Foundation, an anti-corruption and media advocacy Non-government Organisation indicated that a diversified economy would reduce the nation’s overdependence mining and agriculture.
“I think the new government has to prioritise and invest much in infrastructure to support industrialization, improve connectivity in creating a vibrant business environment for entrepreneurship and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to flourish,” he stated.
Mr Ahenu said entrepreneurship and innovation held the key to the nation’s prosperity and economic freedom and called on the government to do more to explore entrepreneurial opportunities for the youth and businesses to contribute meaningfully to economic growth.
“We need to innovate and adapt to changing market demands to create sustainable businesses,” he stated when expressing his view about the nation’s reset process as indicated by President John Dramani Mahama. Mr Ahenu also underlined the need for the government to improve the quality of education at all levels and align curricula with market needs.
There is also the need to promote vocational training and skills development to enhance employability as well as invest in research and innovation to drive technological advancement.
Mr Ahenu said the health sector systems ought to be strengthened too to provide accessible and affordable services and called on the government to also implement social protection programmes to support vulnerable populations and promote public health initiatives to improve overall well-being.
He said environmental sustainability remained another key area the government must focus on by implementing policies to protect natural resources and promote sustainable practices, calling for the need for the nation to address issues relating to climate change and invest in renewable energy as well.
“The government must also encourage sustainable urban planning and waste management,” he stated, urging strengthening of law enforcement not only to guarantee the safety and security of citizens, but also protect human rights and dignity as well.
“Issues relating to crime and violence ought to be tackled through community-based approaches,” Mr Ahenu stated.

Court to begin trial of two escapee prisoners on Jan 27
An Accra Circuit Court has scheduled the trial of two remand prisoners accused of escaping from the Manet Police Station Cells for January 27.
The trial date was set after the prosecution completed all necessary disclosures.
They are expected to present around three witnesses during the proceedings.
The accused, Pius Anundoabil Ayoma, 23, an electrician, and Godwin Klu, 26, a tiler, face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, specifically escaping lawful custody and causing unlawful damage.
Both defendants have pleaded not guilty before the court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Maxwell Oppong, informed the court that the complainants in the case were police officers from the Manet Police Station in Accra.
It was stated that Ayoma, the first accused, and Klu, the second accused, are both remand prisoners at the Manet Police Station cells.
The prosecution outlined that Ayoma faces charges of robbery, attempted murder, and rape, while Klu is charged with theft.
Both accused persons were standing trial at the High Court (Criminal Court 5).
DSP Oppong further revealed that Klu had been convicted to serve a four-year sentence.
The prosecution explained that while arrangements were being made to transfer the accused to prison custody, they devised an escape plan.
The accused managed to break the burglar bars at the window of their cell, damaged the wire mesh, and tore the mosquito net, creating an opening through which they intended to escape.
On March 2, 2023, around 0200 hours, Klu attempted to flee through the hole but was unable to due to his large size.
Ayoma also tried to escape but got his trousers caught on the rough edges of the iron bars. Klu helped Ayoma by freeing his trousers from the rod and giving them back to him so he could escape.
However, Klu himself failed to escape and was subsequently transferred to Ankaful Prisons to begin serving his sentence.
A search operation was launched to locate Ayoma.
Intelligence gathered by a joint team from the National Investigation Bureau and the Ghana Police Service revealed that Ayoma was hiding between Shukura and Afienya.
On May 4, 2023, at around 2000 hours, Ayoma was located in his hideout in Afienya and was taken into custody by the Regional Criminal Investigations Department.
During interrogation, Ayoma admitted to the escape attempt in his caution statement.

Hearts winger Saani Mohammed joins Danish side AC Horsens
Ghana Premier League side Hearts of Oak have announced the departure of attacker Saani Mohammed to Danish side AC Horsens.
The 18-year-old signs a deal with the club which will keep there for the next two-and-half-years with the transfer fee reportedly worth €250,000.
Mohammed made a move to join Hearts before the start of the 2024/25 season, signing from Soccer4Souls in August.
The winger has made 13 appearances for the Phobians this season and has registered two assists in that period.
The Accra-based side announced his transfer on their social media platforms.
“Thank you, Saani Mohammed!” the statement said.
“We announce the transfer of Saani Mohammed to AC Horsens. Your contributions have been invaluable, and we’re proud to have been part of your development. Wishing you the very best in your new chapter!”
Hearts currently sit fifth on the Premier League table after 16 games played.

Rev. Obofour:
The leader and founder of the Anointed Palace Chapel (APC), Rev. Obofour, was in attendance. Dressed in a black suit, white long-sleeved shirt, and a matching bow tie, he was seen engaging in a friendly conversation with President Mahama and several dignitaries at the event.
Jim Iyke:
Nigerian actor Jim Iyke, spotted in a blue-black suit paired with a deep blue tie, was seen exchanging pleasantries with individuals at the event, particularly some Ghanaian pastors.

The newly elected MP for Gomoa Central, A Plus, who ran as an independent candidate and has since joined the NDC caucus in Parliament, was spotted at the dinner event.

Why the 4 independent MPs in 9th Parliament can’t form their own caucus

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Wednesday, January 8, 2024, explained why the four independent members in the 9th Parliament have to join either of the two main caucuses – the Majority and the Minority – instead of forming their own caucus.
According to the Speaker, the issue boils down to the total number of independent MPs in the House and the criteria provided by the Standing Orders of Parliament.
Speaker Bagbin explained that, as provided for in the new Standing Orders of Parliament, independent MPs must meet a minimum requirement of seven members to form their own caucus.
He added that with the number of independent MPs in the 9th Parliament standing at four, they fail to meet the criteria, hence the need for them to join either of the two main caucuses.
“We are still talking about Majority and Minority Caucuses because, by our rules, we have made provisions for a third caucus, and that is the Independent Caucus. But we decided that to constitute a third force, that is the Independent Caucus, you needed to have seven independent members in Parliament.
“As of now, we have four, and so the four have not met the threshold of seven,” the Speaker stated during deliberations by the House on the constitution and selection of committees on Wednesday.
He emphasized that for the independent MPs to be duly recognized as members of their chosen caucus, they would have to officially write to his office informing him of their decision.
“My instructions to the four independent members are that they have the option to decide which of the caucuses to officially transact business with in the House. They have that option, and that is usually done officially in writing to the Speaker of Parliament. I will make it known to the House, and it will be captured in the official records of the House.”
The 9th Parliament of Ghana, inaugurated on January 7, 2024, consists of 183 National Democratic Congress (NDC) members forming the Majority, while the opposition New Patriotic Party, which forms the Minority Caucus, is made up of 88 MPs.
Meanwhile, Kpeli Worlasi of Afram Plains North, Kwame Asare Obeng of Gomoa Central, Stanley Yaw Nandaya of Wulensi, and Kwame Ohene Frimpong of Asante Akyem North, who are the independent MPs in the 9th Parliament, have all announced their decision to join the Majority Caucus.
The 9th Parliament is currently without a representative for Ablekuma North, which has been under serious dispute between the NDC and NPP since the December 7, 2024, election.

GUTA supports reconstruction with GH¢40,000
Fire destroys structures, shops at Kantamanto
The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has donated GH¢40,000 to support the reconstruction of the Kantamanto Market, which was ravaged by a fire on January 2, 2025.
The donation, presented by GUTA’s First Vice-Chairman, Clement Boateng, aims to alleviate the plight of traders who lost their livelihoods in the disaster.
During the presentation, Boateng appealed to financial institutions to assist the affected traders by rescheduling their loan repayments to give them more time to recover from their losses. This appeal is particularly significant, as many traders had taken out loans from banks to finance their businesses.
The Kantamanto Market fire has sparked widespread concern and calls for support. Many key figures, including Nana Kwame Bediako, a business entrepreneur and presidential hopeful, as well as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, among others, have donated funds to support the affected traders.
Boateng stated, “I want to take this opportunity to appeal to the banks because I know that many people here have taken loans from financial institutions. I appeal to these institutions to reschedule loan arrangements, extending the repayment period to give the traders some respite.”
Sports minister appointment should be based on competence, not political affiliation

Former Board Member of Asante Kotoko, Alhaji Abu Lamine, has advised President John Dramani Mahama to select someone who is well-versed in sports and its related activities as the Minister of Youth and Sports.
According to him, there should not be any bias in the appointment towards persons who are more loyal to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and contributed to its success in the general elections.
The former Kotoko board member stated that since Ghanaians rejoice when the national teams are thriving, the president should give priority to the sports minister appointment.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Alhaji Lamine warned against the government prioritizing political loyalty over competency in choosing the sports minister.
“With sports, it is what gives us happiness. We beg the government to appoint someone who understands the game and can initiate sound policies.
“They should not bring someone just because of political affiliation. It should be someone with sports knowledge that is given the nod as the sports minister,” he said.
Meanwhile, John Mahama is yet to announce his ministerial appointees, with several sports personalities’ names being linked to the role.
