John Mahama visits Prof Opoku-Agyemang; provides update on her health

0

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has visited Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

In a Mother’s Day post shared via social media, the president indicated that she is currently taking her deserved rest after recuperating from an illness.

He indicated that the Vice President cannot wait to come back to continue serving the people of Ghana.

Prof Dzakadzie never resigned from NPP – Makafui Kofi Woanyah

0

The Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Makafui Kofi Woanyah, has indicated that the embattled Prof Yayra Dzakadzie never resigned from the NPP.

According to him, it is unfortunate for Prof Dzakadzie and his cohorts to attempt to mislead the public, exhibiting traits of greed and ingratitude towards President Akufo-Addo and the NPP.

“Prof Dzakadzie should be seen as a dangerous element if he wants to go on this tangent, because you have been part of this party and enjoyed all the goodies and now wants to reject it because it is in opposition?”, he said in a rejoinder copied to Myjoyonline.com.

He explained that the letter being circulated in social and traditional media was a doctored copy of the actual letter tendered to his office in August 2020.

He said that Prof Dzakadzie only stated his intentions to withdraw from the NPP parliamentary primary race in the Anlo Constituency for unknown reasons in the letter, and didn’t utter a word about resigning from the party.

He questioned why Prof Dzakadzie would wish the party well in the letter if he really wanted to exit the NPP.

Mr. Woanyah said that in the original letter, Prof Dzakedzie started that “’I, Yayra Dzakadzie, write to formally inform your good office that I do not intend to contest as a candidate in the parliamentary primaries in Anlo Constituency anymore.’”

Whereas the doctored letter stated that “’I, Yayra Drakadzie, write to formally inform your good office that I do not intend to contest as a candidate in the parliamentary primaries in Anlo Constituency anymore and give notice of my resignation from the party.”

“So, looking at the content of both letters, Prof Dzakadzie and his people are only trying to mislead the public in order to gain political favors from the governing NDC. He never tendered a resignation letter but a letter indicating his withdrawal from the parliamentary primaries”, Mr. Woanyah further explained.

Mr. Woanyah questioned why President Akufo-Addo would appoint Prof Dzakadzie as the Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Deputy Director General for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and subsequently as the Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) in 2024, if he had truly resigned from the NPP in August 2020.

He expressed anguish at the attempt by Prof Dzakadzie to denounce the NPP after meriting such appointments from President Akufo-Addo, scheming to find favors from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President Mahama.

He condemned the act and requested Prof Dzakadzie to desist from such “mischievous acts”, which would tarnish his reputation, academic and political career.

Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi has defended his decision to dole out cash to Evangelist Mama Pat.

He sees the gesture as a kind one and part of his daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.

However, he used the opportunity to apologize to members of his political party who were hurt by the gesture, considering the fact that they do not have access to such opportunities when they have worked hard to bring the party to power.

Your actions could devalue the cedi

Former Kumbungu MP, Ras Mubarak Former Kumbungu MP, Ras Mubarak

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, has criticised Chief Executive Officer of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, over a viral video showing him gifting an undisclosed amount of dollars to Evangelist, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Ras Mubarak argued that such actions could undermine the value of the local currency and have serious consequences for the economy.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb, he stated that Sammy Gyamfi’s actions could be interpreted as a lack of confidence in the cedi, despite its recent appreciation.

He urged government office holders to demonstrate confidence in the cedi and the economy, discouraging the practice of giving away forex.

“For government office holders, it’s expected that they prioritize national interests and show confidence in our country’s economy and currency. You cannot justify or defend a public office holder giving away forex, especially when the cedi is performing well.

“Even if the foreign currency is well-earned, such actions could weaken the local currency and economy, Already, we are struggling with schools, hotels, and property owners charging in USD,” parts of his post read.

He added, “Sammy Gyamfi’s poor judgment could be seen as a lack of confidence in the cedi and a contradiction of government regulations. This could negatively impact the cedi’s value and stability.”

Sammy Gyamfi messed up for gifting Agradaa dollars while party members are hungry – Criss Waddle

Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle

Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle has strongly criticised Sammy Gyamfi for gifting Nana Agradaa wades of dollar notes.

Recently, a video surfaced online showing Sammy Gyamfi and Nana Agradaa engaging in a brief conversation.

In the footage, Agradaa was heard requesting some dollar notes from Sammy Gyamfi’s vehicle.

Moments later, the NDC politician was seen counting several dollar bills, which Agradaa eventually snatched and flaunted to bystanders.

The video has since sparked massive public backlash, with many questioning the appropriateness of the gesture.

Reacting to the incident, Criss Waddle has taken to social media to express disappointment.

He has labelled Sammy Gyamfi’s actions as unprofessional and insensitive, especially given the economic struggles faced by grassroots members of the NDC.

“Let’s not make excuses for Sammy Gyamfi, we need the best behaviour from our politicians, he messed up big time. Having dollars in the car alone is bad for your position, let alone gifting it out when some grass-root party members self no chop,” he said.

Criss Waddle emphasised that such actions are unacceptable and could damage public trust in party leadership, especially among loyal supporters facing hardship.

Ntim Fordjour attacks Sammy Gyamfi over ‘old’ video

0

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour (L) Sammy Gyamfi (R) Reverend John Ntim Fordjour (L) Sammy Gyamfi (R)

Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a sharp criticism against Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Acting Chief Executive Officer for GoldBod.

The attack centers on a viral video depicting the NDC stalwart distributing money to preacher, Nana Agradaa.

In a post on his official X account on May 11, 2025, the legislator lambasted Sammy Gyamfi, accusing him of apparent double standards.

This criticism comes in light of the NDC’s recent emphasis on austerity during their address on the party’s 120-day social contract with Ghanaians.

“In just 120 days they’re arrogantly and opulently sharing dollars in public, having stashed millions of cocaine dollars under their beds. These are people who have never worked a day in their lives in any company,” Rev Ntim Fordjour’s post stated.

He further accused the Acting CEO of GoldBod of a clear breach of his own government’s Code of Conduct.

“They’ve suddenly acquired and driving around $450,000 Range Rover Autobiography in less than 120 days in office. Yet all these are being done on the back of ‘toothless’ Code of Conduct which cannot and will not be applied,” he added.

However, it is important to note that earlier media reports had indicated that the incident depicted in the video occurred in 2024.

Sammy Gyamfi himself addressed the footage during an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam programme on Monday, July 1, 2024.

At that time, Gyamfi clarified that the video was old and had been taken during a past visit to Miami with his wife, shortly after their wedding.

Rev Ntim Fordjour’s recent strong condemnation of Gyamfi based on this viral video surfaces nearly a year after the NDC communicator provided his explanation for the footage.

Poor black boy Marries 65 Year Old Woman, 7 Days Later He Discovers Her SECRET

The sun had nearly vanished beyond the crumbling rooftops of Detroit’s projects, casting a cold copper hue across the sky. Marcus sat silently on the front steps of his building, a wrench in hand, his grease-stained overalls soaked from a late drizzle. At just 23 years old, Marcus carried more weight than most men twice his age.

His mother had died when he was 10. His younger sister was lost to the foster care system. His father, once proud and strong, had disappeared into the streets and never returned. All that remained was the burden of poverty and the constant pressure to survive.

Marcus worked long shifts at a rundown auto garage owned by a grumpy old man who paid him in cash and expired snacks. He’d once tried to finish community college, but bills, street pressure, and hunger crushed that dream quickly. His days bled into nights and his nights into silence. Hope was a rare visitor.

That was until one evening when he received a strange letter. Not a call. Not a text. A handwritten envelope, slid under his…..Read Full Story Here.…………….

Adu-Boahene’s allegations must be probed – Kojo Asante

0

Dr. Kojo Asante, Director for Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has called for a thorough investigation into the explosive claims made by former National Security official, Kwabena Adu-Boahene—but only if they are backed by credible evidence.

His comments follow the emergence of a memo written by Adu-Boahene to the National Security Coordinator, in which he alleged that over GH¢8 million was disbursed to opposition parties to support logistics for the 2024 general elections.

The memo also claims that GH¢49 million—currently the focus of a criminal case against Adu-Boahene—was used for covert national security operations. Additionally, GH¢5.1 million was reportedly spent on luxury vehicles for the office of the then president-elect.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 10, 2025, Dr. Asante cautioned that allegations suggesting inducements to state institutions—including Parliament—must be taken seriously, but only after verifying the facts.

“If this claim is substantiated, that payments were made to other state bodies, including Parliament, for the passing of legislation, as some sought a bribe or facilitation, those things have to be investigated.

“It has to be established that this is true, then we take the next step. Rather than the invitation to start going off on a tangent of investigations when the processes themselves to establish the facts have not been exhausted,” he said.

Dr. Asante also commented on the recent protests by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and affiliated groups in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo. He noted that the political tension surrounding the judiciary stems from longstanding governance issues.

“What started all these, you can go as far back as 2013, is a governance problem. It is the governance arrangement around the discretion that the Chief Justice has when it comes to paneling on cases, for not having a cap on the number of justices and how those functions and power have been exercised, and the discussions these have generated among the political class, particularly around the position of bias around petitions.

“The history is very clear, once we started going to court to challenge the validity of elections, the Supreme Court became even more politicised. If we don’t find other non-legal ways of addressing this, it will become a real issue,” he added.

S&P upgrades Ghana’s credit rating to CCC+ on economic reform progress

0

S&P Global Ratings has upgraded Ghana’s foreign-currency credit rating from Selective Default to CCC+.

The agency’s decision, announced on Friday, May 9, 2025, reflects increasing investor confidence and acknowledges the positive strides made under the leadership of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

S&P highlighted Ghana’s progress in tackling its debt challenges and stabilizing its economy following a period of financial strain.

A key factor in the upgrade was the near completion of negotiations with the country’s remaining private lenders, a development that has eased considerable pressure on government finances. The successful Eurobond exchange in October 2024, which occurred prior to the current administration, was also noted.

The rating agency also commended the government’s commitment to implementing crucial reforms, which are beginning to yield tangible results. Notably, inflation, although still elevated at 22%, is showing a downward trend, supported by a strengthening cedi and reduced energy costs.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has spearheaded several significant changes aimed at improving fiscal management. These include updates to financial laws, the reintroduction of spending regulations, and concrete steps towards establishing an independent fiscal council. These measures are designed to foster greater accountability and efficiency in the management of public funds.

Despite inheriting substantial outstanding debts, President Mahama’s government, which assumed office 122 days ago following the December 2024 elections, has prioritized expenditure cuts over increasing taxes. This approach aligns with the conditions of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The government has set ambitious fiscal targets, aiming for a budget surplus of 1.5% of GDP in 2025 and committing to limit annual spending growth to below 10% for the next four years. This represents a significant shift from the average annual spending growth of 28% experienced over the preceding two decades.

S&P projects a substantial reduction in Ghana’s public debt, net of cash reserves, from 71.4% of GDP in 2024 to a more sustainable 47.4% by 2028. Furthermore, interest payments, which previously consumed nearly half of the government’s revenue, have decreased to approximately 25% following the debt restructuring initiatives.

While acknowledging remaining risks, such as potential increases in spending during the 2024 election year and ongoing global economic uncertainties, S&P emphasized that Ghana’s improved economic standing, consistent reforms, and positive growth prospects underpin the improved credit rating.

The agency also recognized Ghana’s resilient economic growth of 5.7% in 2024, driven by strong performances in the industrial and services sectors. However, they cautioned about the long-term threats to cocoa production posed by illegal gold mining activities.

Foreign Affairs Minister personally delivers passports to applicants in Accra

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, May 10, GNA – Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, took to the streets of Accra, Friday, to personally deliver new chip-embedded passports to applicants.

The move, a historic shift in government service delivery, is expected to ease the stress of Ghanaians in acquiring passports.

The new delivery system comes as the Ministry dispatches over 5,000 passports nationwide this week via Ghana Post, building on the successful rollout of the advanced chip-embedded biometric passport.

The applicants recieved their passports barely two weeks after application.

This door-to-door delivery initiative, implemented in partnership with Ghana Post, forms part of sweeping reforms by the Passport Reforms Committee established by the Foreign Affairs Minister on his first day in office.

Clad in pristine white long-sleeve kaftan, the Minister surprised the applicants by arriving at their workplaces to hand-deliver their travel documents.

“I wanted to experience firsthand the joy of Ghanaians receiving this essential service without stress,” Mr Ablakwa said as he placed passports into the hands of grateful recipients.

The Minister revealed that his personal participation was meant to send a clear message that the era of frustrated citizens making endless trips to passport offices was over.

Among those who received their passports was Ms Doreen Klutse, a staff of the Ghana Library Authority, and Mr Abdul Razak Osmanu, a businessman and resident of Pig Farm in Accra.

Ms Klutse said: “I didn’t know my passport will be delivered to me personally. All I knew was that when your time is due, you will have to go to the application centre personally to claim it. But when I recieved a text and a call from Ghana Post, i was surprised.”

She further exclaimed: “Even more shocking was receiving my passport from the Foreign Minister as the first for delivery service initiative.”

Three phone snatchers jailed 19 years for robbery

0

A Ho Circuit Court has sentenced three individuals to a total of 19-years imprisonment for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

The convicted persons – Mercy Sokpe (22), Atsu Kamasa (25), and Godfred Dzidonu (19) – were found guilty of robbing a 21-year-old, Elijah Torgbedzi of his iPhone 6s, valued at GH¢700, near the Ho Central Market on May 4, 2025.

The court presided over by Mr Osman Abdul-Hakeem sentenced Sokpe to three years with Kamasa and Dzidonu each serving eight years for the two charges after pleading guilty to the charges.

According to the facts presented in court, Mercy Sokpe initiated the attack by approaching the victim under the pretence of wanting to take a selfie with his phone.

While pretending to take the photo, she secretly signaled her accomplices, who quickly joined her and assaulted the victim with a pair of scissors before snatching the phone and fleeing.

The victim raised an alarm, leading to the arrest of Godfred Dzidonu, who was in possession of the stolen phone.

Police investigations subsequently led to the arrest of Mercy Sokpe and Atsu Kamasa from their hideouts in Ho.

The three suspects were arraigned before the Ho Circuit Court on May 9, where they pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

Why Mamponghene is the second-in-command to Asantehene

0

The late Daasebre Osei Bonsu II The late Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

The recent passing of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Mamponghene, has renewed attention on the Mamponghene’s significant role as the occupant of the Silver Stool in the Ashanti Kingdom.

The Silver Stool, a symbol of immense traditional authority, designates the Mamponghene as the second-in-command to the Asantehene, the occupant of the Golden Stool, in the Ashanti hierarchy.

Rooted in Ashanti history, the Silver Stool represents the Mampong Traditional Area’s pivotal role within Asanteman.

According to historical accounts, the Mamponghene’s authority dates back to the early formation of the Ashanti Kingdom under Osei Tutu I, its founder, when Mampong emerged as a key ally in consolidating Asante power.

The Silver Stool, distinct from the Golden Stool, signifies the Mamponghene’s responsibility to act on behalf of the Asantehene in critical matters of custom and governance, particularly in the Asantehene’s absence.

As the Ashanti Kingdom expanded, Mampong became a vital administrative and military stronghold. The Mamponghene’s position as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs further affirms the authority of the occupant of the Mampong stool.

Born Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II embodied the prestige of the Silver Stool during his 28-year reign.

A lawyer and economist, he was educated at Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon, and served as Registrar of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) before his enstoolment on August 25, 1996.

His ascension followed his uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II, and ended nearly two decades of chieftaincy disputes, restoring stability to Mampong.

Known for his diplomacy and commitment to development, Daasebre sponsored education for needy students and fostered peace in the Mampong Traditional Area.

He passed away on April 20, 2025, at age 86, after a short illness, with his death formally announced to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on April 28, 2025, in line with Asante custom.

The Asantehene has directed that Daasebre Osei Bonsu II’s burial be organized within three weeks, with the one-week observation set for May 12, 2025.

GH₵960k ‘bribery’ allegation against Parliament, Defence Committee baseless – Agalga

0

The Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga, has refuted allegations suggesting that Members of Parliament received GH₵960,000 in bribes to facilitate the passage of the National Signals Bureau Act, 2020 (Act 1040).

The claims, made by former ex-Director General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahene, in a memo to the  Auditor General, were described by Agalga as “spurious,” “baseless,” and “an act of desperation.”

In a signed statement, Agalga clarified that at the time of the Act’s passage in 2020, Adu Boahene had no involvement with the Bureau, which was not yet operational.

He further explained that Adu Boahene only assumed his role in 2021 and therefore could not have made payments to a parliamentary committee for a bill passed before his appointment.

“At the time of the passage of Act 1040, Hon Seth Acheampong was the Committee Chairman and I served as the Ranking Member,” Agalga noted. “The National Signals Bureau, which Mr. Boahene later headed, did not even exist when the bill was being considered.”

He added that the committee only engaged with the then-Minister for National Security, Albert Kan Dapaah, and the late National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh, throughout the legislative process.

“The committee had nothing to do with Adu-Boahene during the passage of the Act and therefore could not have received any money from him,” Agalga emphasized.

Adu Boahene memo a “smokescreen” to intimidate the state into dropping charges -Bright Simons

The Honorary Vice President of IMANI-Africa Bright Simons has described the former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General Kwabena Adu Boahene’s memo as a smokescreen to intimidate the state into dropping charges against him.

Rotary International President lauds Ghana, meets Ga Mantse

0

The President-elect of Rotary International, Mr Mário César Martins de Camargo, has described Ghana as a natural gateway for Rotary’s growth across Africa, pointing to the continent’s youthful population and growing middle class as key factors in the organisation’s long-term plans.

Mr de Camargo made the observation on Friday, May 9, 2025, when he paid a courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, at his palace in Accra.

The visit, hosted by Rotary International District 9104, formed part of the Brazilian’s tour of African countries ahead of officially assuming office.

Speaking during the visit, Mr de Camargo said Rotary, which he described as “the largest organisation of volunteers on the planet,” sees Africa as the future of its operations.

He drew a parallel with India’s transformation over the past four decades, noting that the South Asian country now ranks second in Rotary membership globally, with over 176,000 members.

“Africa has tremendous potential for Rotary. It is where India was 40 years ago,” Mr de Camargo said.

“Ghana is well placed to serve as an anchor for that growth. Rotary does not only meet for lunch; we work with communities. We are available to partner with your community and your leadership on whatever projects you deem necessary.”

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II welcomed the initiative and urged the visiting Rotary delegation to consider formalising a partnership to develop and implement community-based projects.

gamantse

He expressed hope that such collaboration would bring tangible benefits to people living within the Ga State.

“I believe one of these days we will sit down with our business desk, Rotary and the schools to define a proper CSR agenda and identify a number of projects we could share in the community to improve lives and uplift the Ga State,” the Ga Mantse said.

He added that the timing of the visit was important, noting that it marked a new chapter in the relationship between the Ga State and Rotary International.

As part of the visit, a ceremonial Tree of Life was planted on the palace grounds to symbolise Rotary’s interest in environmental issues and its broader development goals. The Ga Mantse described the gesture as a continuation of efforts to strengthen ties between the two institutions.

treeoflife

The District Governor of Rotary International District 9104, Madam Florence Maame Christiana Hagan, said the President-elect’s visit was a strong show of support for the district’s contributions to Rotary’s work across the region.

She commended the Ga Mantse for proposing the creation of a palace-based Rotary club, describing it as a meaningful step that reflects the King’s interest in the values of service.

“Rotary is here to do good. We unite to improve the standard of life in the communities we serve,” Madam Hagan said. She encouraged the media and members of the public to support Rotary’s work and consider joining its ranks.

ro

Mr de Camargo’s current tour includes stops in Côte d’Ivoire, São Tomé and Príncipe, Zambia, Tanzania, Angola, Mozambique, South Africa and Ethiopia.

He is expected to return to the continent in 2026 as President of Rotary International, with plans to visit additional countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Morocco.

Bright Simons hits hard at Adu-Boahene for splurging about GH¢1 million on spyware

0

Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons

Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons, has described the justification given by former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, for spending GH¢1 million on spyware as unreasonable.

He argued that the misappropriation of funds by Adu-Boahene should not be tolerated, as it undermines the country’s national security system.

Speaking on Joy News’ File on Saturday, May 10, 2025, Bright Simons said; “If it is necessary to spy on people because some of them are terrorists, some are criminals etc and we decided to buy it and we allocated $7million, you cannot allocate one point something million dollars to the company, refuse to pay the rest, and so therefore the country is denied the benefit of the transaction and for over four years, claims to have diverted the money for other purposes without any trail.”

Bright Simons added that such actions violate financial laws and are not a justifiable explanation.

“This cannot happen under our financial regulations, and it is not even a reasonable explanation to give,” he stated.

Parliamentarian denies bribery allegations, labels claims “baseless and desperate

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, May 11, GNA- Mr James Agalga, Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, has categorically denied allegations of bribery made by Mr Kwabena Adu Boahene, former Director General of the National Signals Bureau.

Mr Adu Boahene’s lawyer had alleged that GH¢ 960,000 was paid to the Committee as Members of Parliament (MPs) allowance to facilitate the enactment of the National Signals Bureau Act, 2020 (Act 1040).

In a statement released by Mr Agalga on Sunday and issued to the Ghana News Agency, it described the allegations as “baseless and an act of desperation.”

It emphasised that Mr Adu Boahene could not have facilitated the passage of the Act by paying monies to the Committee, as he was not involved in the process.

“The National Signals Bureau, the agency Adu Boahene subsequently headed as Director General, was non-existent prior to the passage of Act 1040. It is not possible that he could have facilitated the passage of the said Act by paying monies to the Defence and Interior Committee,” the statement said.

It explained that the Committee dealt with the Minister for National Security, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, who was the principal sponsor of the Bill, and Mr. Joshua Kyeremeh, the National Security Coordinator, during the enactment of Act 1040.

“Adu Boahene became Director General long after the passage of Act 1040 and could not therefore have drawn monies from the accounts of an agency which was not even in existence,” it added.

The statement, quoted Mr Agalga as saying, “I only got to know Adu Boahene sometime in April or May 2021 when he appeared for the first time before our committee and was introduced to us by Hon. Albert Kan Dapaah, the Minister for National Security at the time, as the newly appointed Director General of the National Signals Bureau, long after the passage of Act 1040.”

92 compressed slabs of the suspected substance, each wrapped in yellowish material were discovered at Yakubu’s residence.

Adu-Boahene was pushed to the wall – Manso Nkwanta MP defends detailed memo to National Security Coordinator

0

Former National Signals Bureau Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene Former National Signals Bureau Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene

The Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta Constituency, Tweneboah Fokuo, has stated that former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, had no choice but to speak out on the allegations levelled against him.

According to Fokuo, Adu-Boahene’s decision to write a detailed memo to the National Security Coordinator regarding funds expended during his tenure came after several failed attempts to reach out to Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine.

He explained that Adu-Boahene had withheld details of the GH¢49 million he expended from investigators due to its potential negative implications for the nation. However, he was pushed to the edge and forced to document everything in his detailed memo to the National Security Coordinator.

Fokuo further stated that Adu-Boahene describes his arrest as malicious prosecution against him. Defending the former National Signals Bureau boss on Channel One TV’s ‘The Big Issue’ on Saturday, May 10, 2025, the Manso Nkwanta MP suggested that many people are uneasy about the revelations made by Adu-Boahene.

“If you read his letter carefully, he began by stating that he had kept this information from his interrogators because of the institution he worked for and the implications on the nation as a whole. He made every effort to reach out to the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, but never had the chance, and so he was pushed to the wall,” Fokuo said.

He added, “This man was pushed to the edge. When the issue surfaced, people criticized him, making all sorts of allegations against him. Now, as a last resort, he has put this out, and people are uneasy, making all kinds of remarks against him.”

Adu-Boahene, who faces 11 charges, including stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, has strongly denied any misconduct.

He insists that all expenditures during his tenure were lawful and aligned with national security interests. The accused persons include Advantage Solutions Limited and a banker, Mildred Donkor.

The charges filed against the accused persons included: stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); conspiracy to steal, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960; and defrauding by false pretences, contrary to Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Some of the other charges against them are: wilfully causing financial loss to the state, contrary to Section 179A(3)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); using public office for profit, contrary to Section 179C(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29); and collaboration to commit a crime, to wit, using public office for profit, contrary to Section 179C(b) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Shóck as NDC Candidate Wins Ablekuma North Amid Electoral Disputes and Allegations Against EC Chair

0

Ewurabena Aubynn, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been declared the winner of the Ablekuma North constituency in a dramatic turn of events, following significant disputes over the election results. This victory has sparked intense debate and allegations of misconduct involving the Electoral Commission (EC), particularly against its chairperson, Jean Mensa.

The election, held on December 7, 2024, was clouded by chaos and procedural issues. On December 10, 2024, the EC’s Returning Officer announced Aubynn as the winner, based on results from 219 out of 281 polling stations. However, the EC later reversed this decision, citing pressure on the Returning Officer and the absence of pink sheets from 62 polling stations. This move led to widespread outrage, with NDC supporters accusing the EC of undermining the electoral process. In response, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, challenged the results, claiming discrepancies and vowing to seek legal action.

The situation escalated during the re-collation of results, which faced numerous setbacks. Six attempts to resolve the dispute were interrupted due to disagreements over the authenticity of pink sheets. The situation reached a boiling point on January 17, 2025, when the EC’s Greater Accra office was invaded, leading to property damage and further disruptions. Critics argue that the EC’s inability to produce original pink sheets for all polling stations added to the confusion and raised questions about its competence.

Representatives of the NDC insisted that the scanned copies and electronic data provided by the NPP were insufficient, and they called for the original declaration of Aubynn’s victory to be upheld, arguing that the results from the majority of polling stations had been properly verified.

Civil society groups have been vocal in their criticism of the EC’s handling of the situation. On January 10, 2025, the Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement-Africa (PTAAM-Africa) submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the removal of Jean Mensa and her deputies. The petition highlights concerns over financial mismanagement, constitutional violations, and the handling of the 2020 voter register procurement, suggesting that Mensa’s leadership has eroded public trust in the electoral system.

Legal experts have weighed in on the issue, emphasizing that under Ghanaian electoral law, a Returning Officer is empowered to declare results based on the data from collated polling stations, provided the process is transparent. The absence of pink sheets for 62 polling stations, coupled with the EC’s failure to resolve the situation quickly, has led to questions about the EC’s adherence to Constitutional Instrument 127 (CI 127). Many critics argue that upholding the initial declaration in favor of Aubynn would align with the principle of respecting the will of the voters, given the verified results from the majority of polling stations.

As the situation unfolds, calls for accountability and transparency in Ghana’s electoral process are growing louder, with significant pressure mounting on Jean Mensa and the EC to address these concerns.

Mother’s Day: First Lady celebrates Ghanaian Mothers

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, May 11, GNA – On this year’s International Mother’s Day, First Lady Lordina Mahama has congratulated mothers and women across the country.

The First Lady in a statement made available to the Ghana News Agency acknowledged the sacrifices of mothers and women for their respective families.

“My dear mothers and remarkable women of Ghana, on this beautiful occasion of Mother’s Day, my heart is filled with profound gratitude and admiration for each of you,” Mrs Mahama said.

“Today is an opportunity to pause and honour the incredible strength, unwavering love, and countless sacrifices that mothers make daily.

“We are the pillars of our homes and the heartbeat of our nation. Mothers nurture the future.”

She said their nurturing hands, wise counsel, and unconditional assistance foster strong families and communities, laying the groundwork for a compassionate society.

“My dear mothers, I know your daily efforts and challenges as you strive to build better lives for yourselves and your families.”

The First Lady said the well-being of their homes and children was intrinsically linked to the progress and stability of the nation.

She noted that her deepest conviction, a belief shared wholeheartedly by hee husband, President John Dramani Mahama, was that creating an environment where every Ghanaian family can prosper is paramount.

Mrs Mahama said her husband remains steadfast in his commitment to resetting our economy to achieve robust and inclusive growth, creating more job opportunities for the nation’s youth and all citizens.

She said the President was also dedicated to positioning Ghana as a preferred destination for local and international investment and business, ultimately aimed at improving the living conditions for all Ghanaians and ensuring a brighter future for our children.

She reiterated that her commitment to supporting women and vulnerable groups in Ghana remains as strong as ever.

The First Lady said through the work of the Lordina Foundation, they would continue their efforts to empower women through skills training and economic support, advocate for their rights, and provide essential assistance to those who need it most, including children and persons living with HIV/AIDS.

She said a critical area of their focus was healthcare, particularly for mothers and children.

She said they were dedicated to improving healthcare facilities across the country, specifically by providing modern, fully equipped maternity and children’s wards in hospitals.

Mrs Mahama said ensuring that mothers receive the best possible care during pregnancy and childbirth and that their children had access to quality health services was a cause very close to her heart, and that she would continue to champion it.

“Today, as we celebrate mothers, know that your sacrifices, strength, and love are seen, valued, and deeply appreciated by your families, communities, and nation,” Mrs Mahama said.

“May God bless you abundantly for all that you do. May your day be filled with joy, peace, and the profound love you so richly deserve.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers and women of Ghana.”

Six Involved, Three Severely Injured

0

A horrific accident involving three motorcycles

has left at least three individuals with serious injuries on the Bolgatanga-Bawku highway. The incident occurred near Koburi in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

According to an eyewitness account shared with SMART MEDIA UPPER EAST, the accident happened when three motorcycles, carrying six persons — one girl and five boys — collided while returning from Zebila to Sapeliga.

The eyewitness narrated that one of the motorbikes collided head-on with a vehicle that was traveling from the Bawku area towards Bolgatanga. The impact caused the two other motorcycles, which were closely following behind, to crash as well.

“The first motorbike collided directly with the oncoming car, and the other two couldn’t brake in time, leading to a chain crash from the back,” the eyewitness said.

The violent crash resulted in multiple injuries. Three of the victims reportedly sustained serious wounds, including broken legs and arms. They were immediately rushed to the Zebila District Hospital for urgent medical attention.

The condition of the remaining victims is currently unknown, but sources indicate that medical staff at the hospital are working diligently to provide care to all involved.

This unfortunate incident adds to the growing number of accidents on the Bolgatanga-Bawku stretch — a route known for its high motorbike usage and increasing vehicular traffic.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident, and investigations are expected to commence to determine the cause and possible negligence.

Asset declaration shift shows Ghana is finally taking public accountability seriously – Dr Akwetey

0

The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr Emmanuel O. Akwetey, says President John Mahama’s enforcement of asset declaration rules marks a real shift in Ghana’s approach to public accountability after decades of inaction.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile programme on Saturday, May 10, 2025, Dr Akwetey described the President’s use of moral pressure, backed by salary sanctions and threats of dismissal, as a practical way to address long-standing non-compliance among public officials.

“For 32 years in the Fourth Republic, we’ve heard about asset declaration, but nothing happened,” Dr Akwetey said. “What President Mahama has done, which needs to be recognised, is that the era of impunity is over. You have to declare, and there’s a timeline. He set the example, it was the first time we saw a president signing and publicly submitting his forms.”

Although the Constitution allows a six-month window for asset declaration after assuming office, President Mahama introduced a March 31 deadline for all appointees. Dr Akwetey said the move has created a shift in behaviour among officials, even if it has sparked debate about whether the President is going beyond the letter of the law.

“Even if people haven’t breached the six-month legal window, they are now facing real consequences like loss of salary and the threat of dismissal. This is new,” he observed.

Dr Akwetey recalled that under past administrations, including that of former President John Kufuor, attempts to enforce asset declaration laws were hindered by social and cultural concerns. Some public officials feared that openly declaring their assets would make them vulnerable to demands or threats from extended family members.

“They were afraid that, in an extended family system where nephews, nieces and others are involved in inheritance, declaring assets could put their lives at risk. That was the fear at the time,” he noted.

He said that while some critics believe the President may be acting outside the law, the real issue is whether this approach will lead to a lasting culture of accountability.

“Moral persuasion is important, but it turns out it’s not enough. The next stage is to see how many comply by the deadline and what sanctions follow. Could this become the culture we haven’t had in 32 years? That’s the real test,” he said.

Dr Akwetey described the President’s method as firm but practical, given the complications that would arise from dismissing a large number of appointees at once.

“If you sacked all of them, half of them, it would take time to bring in new ministers. You’d have to go through vetting processes again. I think the way he’s started is subtle and gaining results,” he said.

I once got seven nominations and won zero, but today I am the chosen one – King Promise

Ghanaian Afrobeats sensation King Promise Ghanaian Afrobeats sensation King Promise

Ghanaian Afrobeats sensation King Promise delivered an emotional speech reflecting on his journey in the music industry after being crowned Artiste of the Year at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Taking the stage to accept the night’s most coveted award, King Promise described his rise as a testament to resilience and perseverance.

Recalling previous years in the industry, he shared a humbling experience where he received seven nominations but went home empty-handed.

“I just want to say a big thank you to the best fans in the world. If anyone is watching me right now have a dream, use me as an example of resilience. When I broke out on the scene, I had seven nominations and I left with zero.

“While some people laughed, I just worked harder because I believe in God’s timing. Today I am the chosen one,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to his family for their unwavering support throughout his journey.

Shamima Muslim is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team Shamima Muslim is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Shamima Muslim, has affirmed the NDC’s unwavering commitment to delivering on its promises, assuring Ghanaians that the party will not become complacent after the initial briefing on its 120-day social contract.

Speaking on Pan African TV on May 10, 2025, Muslim underscored the NDC’s dedication to implementing pivotal policies aimed at guaranteeing jobs, fostering good governance, and ensuring national prosperity.

“So far, so very good. I think the jury is out; we have received quite great commendations from a cross-section of Ghanaians. And it’s always good to test the pulse of the people across different status, across societies, and different interests. Generally, I think there’s an outpouring of commendations,” she stated.

Muslim specifically highlighted positive feedback from notable figures such as Professor Stephen Addai, who she noted, along with other professors, had affirmed the efficiency and delivery of His Excellency Mahama’s 120-day promises.

“For us, this is not for us to sit and gloat over; it is to quickly put all our appointees to work,” she emphasized, stressing the urgency required to fulfill the party’s extensive commitments.

According to Muslim, the NDC has outlined numerous promises that demand immediate attention for their successful implementation.

“Considering a four-year mandate that is promising to do a lot, it requires a certain level of urgency… urgency in thoughts and approach… in delivery and execution,” she explained.

She clarified that the 120-day social contract represents a series of foundational programs designed to build upon the party’s broader policy commitments, which align with their manifesto theme of “resetting Ghana for jobs, accountability, and prosperity.”

“It’s a series of promises that cut across some specific sectorial areas which, in our view, were priority areas to begin the administration with,” Muslim stated.

Citing good governance practices as a key priority, she highlighted specific deliverables, “So we made the promise that we were going to have the leanest and most efficient administration with not more than 60 ministers, and in fact, we have made all these deliverables with 56 ministers. Within 14 days, we put a cabinet in place as promised – and everyone admits that it is unprecedented in the Fourth Republic.

Ghanaian boxer Emmanuel Mankattah Sackey delivered a commanding performance to defeat Nigerian fighter Muhammed Olalekan and capture the UBO Africa Super Featherweight title on May 10, 2025.

The fight, held at the Idrowhyt Events Center in Dansoman, saw Sackey, dressed in red and blue shorts, dominate the early rounds with a relentless barrage of high-volume punches that quickly began to wear down his opponent.

Olalekan, wearing black and green, countered with a series of crucial shots in an attempt to regain control of the bout.

However, Sackey’s dominance grew as the match progressed. In the fifth round, he landed a powerful blow to Olalekan’s face, sending the Nigerian to the canvas.

Unable to recover, Olalekan was counted out, and the referee declared Sackey the winner by knockout.

With this victory, Sackey’s professional record now stands at nine wins by knockout, two draws, and three losses from 14 bouts.

The win marks a major milestone in his boxing career and sets the stage for his pursuit of more prestigious titles.

“This is just the beginning,” Sackey remarked after the fight. “I’m focused on writing my name in Ghana’s boxing history.”

A disturbing video allegedly involving three female students from a Senior High School (SHS) in Ghana has gone viral, stirring public concern and raising questions about discipline and privacy in schools.

According to sources, the students were reportedly caught in an inappropriate act inside their school dormitory. The footage, which has been widely shared on social media platforms, shows the girls engaging in behavior deemed unacceptable for their age and setting.

School authorities have launched an internal investigation to determine how the incident occurred and who was responsible for recording and leaking the video. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has also been alerted and is expected to issue a formal statement in the coming days.

Parents and guardians have expressed shock and disappointment, calling for stricter supervision in boarding houses and more education on digital responsibility among students.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of managing student behavior in the age of smartphones and social media. Many education stakeholders are now advocating for increased guidance and counseling sessions in schools to help prevent such occurrences.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to refrain from sharing the video, as it involves minors and constitutes a breach of their privacy and dignity.

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, born on September 24, 1957, in Sambo, Upper West Region, is a prominent Ghanaian politician and lawyer.

With a career spanning over three decades, he has held several influential positions, most notably serving as the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament since 2021.

Bagbin’s journey into politics was inspired by his belief that “law and politics are Siamese twins,” a principle he carried from his academic years.

He completed his education at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, later earning an Executive Masters in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA.

According to a report by Yen News, Bagbin’s professional career began in law, working at various legal firms before transitioning into politics.

He became a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 1992 and was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli West, his home constituency. Throughout his tenure, he has been an advocate for parliamentary independence and democratic reform.

Notably, he served as Majority Leader and has held key ministerial roles, including Minister for Health and Minister for Water Resources, Works, and Housing.

Bagbin is married to Alice Adjua Yornas Bagbin, a Programme Officer at UNICEF Ghana.

Though he has made significant strides in Ghanaian politics, his ambitions to lead the country as president were not realized, with his focus now squarely on enhancing parliamentary practices.

His current leadership aims to modernize Ghana’s legislative body, focusing on tolerance, consensus-building, and improved governance.

Ghana paired with France, Netherlands for Tokyo World Championships ticket

0

Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team will have a final opportunity to qualify for the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships as they return to the track on Day 2 of the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou.

On the opening day of the competition, the Ghanaian quartet of Barnabas Aggerh, Sean Safo-Antwi, Joseph Paul Amoah, and Ibrahim Fuseini posted a season best time of 38.49 seconds. However, their third-place finish behind Great Britain & Northern Ireland and Poland was not enough to secure one of the two automatic qualification spots from their heat.

As qualification now hinges on time rankings across heats, Ghana must produce a faster performance in their second race, where they face a strong field including France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Korea, and Chinese Taipei in Heat 1.

The race starts at 12:32 Ghana Time.

France and the Netherlands pose significant competition, having both registered national records under 38 seconds—37.79 and 37.91 seconds, respectively. Switzerland and Korea have seasonal bests closely aligned with Ghana’s, while Chinese Taipei trails slightly behind.

Ghana’s national record of 38.07 seconds remains within reach, and improving upon their Day 1 performance could place them among the top teams qualifying by time.

Elsewhere in the competition, other qualification hopefuls include Jamaica, Brazil, Australia, China, and Belgium, all of whom are scheduled to compete in other heats. Notably, Jamaica and Brazil bring world-class pedigree, with national records of 36.84 and 37.72 seconds, respectively.

With only a limited number of remaining slots available for Tokyo, Ghana’s performance on Day 2 will be critical in determining whether they will be part of the 4x100m relay line-up at the World Championships later this year.

7 Common Things You Do That Secretly Annoy Your Neighbours

0

Have you ever wondered if there are certain things you are doing that your neighbours might not like? A lot of people think they are good and friendly neighbours or at least, mind-their-business kind of neighbours.

But the truth is, sometimes, we might be the reason our neighbours are rolling their eyes, whispering complaints, or even plotting revenge in silence.

Excess belly fat ‘impairs learning, memory and emotion control in teenagers’

0

Teenagers with excess belly fat could face problems with learning, memory and emotion control, a study suggests.

Key brain areas were found to be larger in youngsters carrying excess weight around the abdomen.

Researchers said the findings are “particularly alarming” given the importance of adolescence when it comes to brain development.

They suggest that tackling obesity among children will not only improve physical health, but could also improve brain health.

For the study, which is being presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Malaga, data from 3,320 children taking part in an ongoing US study on how childhood experiences impact brain development and health were analysed.

The average age of the group was nine, with youngsters recruited from cities across 17 US states and followed for four years, from 2016 to 2018 and from 2020 to 2022.

The children were categorised on obesity status, with more than a third (34.6%) classed as having abdominal obesity, which was determined by measuring waist circumference.

MRI scans revealed several regions of the brain had more volume in youngsters carrying excess belly fat compared to those without.

The biggest changes were in the hippocampus, which plays a crucial role in memory formation, and the amygdala, the brain’s emotional centre that is particularly involved in processing fear and anxiety.

The hippocampus was found to be around 6.6% larger, while the amygdala was about 4.3% bigger.

Dr Augusto Cesar F De Moraes, of UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in Austin, said: “Our findings suggest that obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, can impair teenagers’ learning, memory and control of emotions.

“I worry about how these changes, which are occurring at the age of 13 or 14, might affect them later in life.

“This is particularly alarming, given that the teenage years are such an important time for brain development.

“There’s even a chance they could be at a higher risk of things like memory problems or dementia as they get older.

“That’s why we believe supporting healthier habits early on is so important, not just for physical health, but for brain health too.

“Treating and preventing adolescent obesity won’t only improve health – it may improve brain health, too.”

The study also found children from more deprived areas had reduced development in a number of areas in the brain, including the hippocampus and amygdala, as well as the putamen, the brain structure involved in learning and motor control.

Dr De Moraes added: “This difference was even more pronounced among adolescents with persistent abdominal obesity.

“It highlights the urgent need to address both social inequality and health risks to support not only physical wellbeing but also healthy brain development in youth.”
