Navigating motherhood in today’s world

0

Mothers are known to be the backbone of families – raising children, running households, and playing maternal roles not only to their own children but also to relatives. I remember my childhood years spent with my maternal grandmother.

She raised eight children, plus three others from her hometown, while discreetly selling charcoal to support her household. My grandfather preferred her to be a stay-at-home mother, but like many women of her time, she found ways to contribute economically.

Fast forward to today, and the dynamics of motherhood have evolved significantly. Industrialization, urbanization, and shifting societal values have redefined what it means to be a mother. Extended family setups are gradually giving way to nuclear households, and women now have greater autonomy in decision-making – especially in matters of career and family planning.

Motherhood and the modern work-life balance

As more women enter the workforce, they find themselves juggling professional responsibilities and parenting with increasing intensity. The sight of a mother dropping her three kids at school before rushing to work, only to return home at night to help with homework before continuing with office tasks, is not uncommon. The modern Ghanaian mother is constantly in motion, seeking to excel in her career while being present for her family.

Yet, time management is one of the biggest hurdles. Working mothers often feel pulled in multiple directions, trying to meet deadlines at work while providing emotional and physical care to their children. Compounded by societal expectations, many feel guilty for choosing career over traditional caregiving roles.

Systemic challenges and career advancement

Despite strides in gender equality, mothers still face workplace discrimination. Some employers perceive them as less committed, resulting in slower career progression or missed promotion opportunities. This bias directly affects their financial stability – raising children is costly, with expenses ranging from daycare to school fees and healthcare.

Childcare access is another significant concern. Many mothers cannot rely on elderly parents due to age, illness, or existing responsibilities with other grandchildren. Trusting a nanny or daycare center comes with fear – stories of child abuse and neglect are all too common. Moreover, inadequate maternity leave policies and the lack of flexible working hours make it even more difficult for mothers to balance professional and personal responsibilities. This lack of institutional support can lead to burnout and a diminished quality of life.

Motherhood and technology

Thankfully, technology has stepped in to ease some of the pressures of modern motherhood. Robotic-enabled appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and microwaves, as well as online grocery and meal prep services, help reduce household labor. Simpler recipes and smart devices allow mothers to maximize their time without compromising on care. Additionally, many mothers are leveraging remote work and digital skills to build flexible careers. Certifications in Cybersecurity, Web Design, and Data Analytics now allow women to work from home, offering the dual benefit of professional growth and family presence.

Preparing financially for motherhood

Preparing financially for motherhood is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of planning for a new chapter in life. While emotional and physical preparations – such as understanding the stages of pregnancy or adjusting to lifestyle changes – are undeniably important, financial readiness lays the groundwork for a more secure and confident transition into motherhood. Expenses such as prenatal checkups, labour and delivery plans, and setting up a safe and nurturing nursery can quickly add up. Without a clear and sustainable financial strategy, what should be moments of joyful anticipation can instead become sources of stress and uncertainty. Budgeting, saving, and understanding health coverage are just a few of the steps that can help ease this transition.

Let me share the story of Akua, whose journey deeply resonates with me. As a young professional in Accra, she was thrilled at the prospect of becoming a mother but soon realized the financial gaps in her planning. Determined not to let money overshadow the experience, she consulted a financial advisor, created a maternity savings plan, and even explored work benefits that supported parental leave. Her story is not just about overcoming challenges – it’s about proactively shaping her future as both a mother and a provider. Akua’s example highlights the empowering role of financial literacy and preparation in making motherhood not only manageable but truly fulfilling.

The mental health dimensions

A mother’s mental well-being is crucial to her ability to nurture and support her family. Stress, anxiety, and postpartum depression can impair emotional bonding, affect physical health, and even lead to chronic illness if left unaddressed. Prolonged stress impacts sleep, weakens immunity, and increases the risk of heart disease.

Employers who prioritize mental health by offering counselling, flexible schedules, or wellness programs see improved productivity, motivation, and retention among working mothers. Investing in the mental health of mothers is a win-win for families and businesses alike.

Teaching financial literacy to the next generation

One of the most impactful gifts a mother can give her child is the knowledge of financial responsibility. Beyond the basics of love and care, equipping children with financial literacy sets them up for long-term success and security. Teaching children about saving, budgeting, and investing from a young age instills critical life skills that foster independence, discipline, and confidence.

From simple lessons like setting aside a portion of birthday money, to more advanced concepts such as creating a budget or understanding how compound interest works, early financial education lays the groundwork for sound decision-making in adulthood. These lessons can be woven into everyday life – grocery shopping, earning allowances, or even starting a small business or savings challenge together. By demystifying money and making it a regular, open topic of discussion at home, mothers can break cycles of financial uncertainty and empower their children to build healthy relationships with money. Ultimately, nurturing financial literacy is not just about managing dollars – it’s about preparing children to thrive in a world where financial choices shape so much of their future.

A legacy of financial wisdom

Motherhood is one of the most demanding yet rewarding journeys a woman can undertake. Today’s Ghanaian mother is a blend of tradition and innovation, caring, providing, leading, and teaching. Despite the challenges be they structural, emotional, or financial mothers continue to adapt, grow, and thrive.

This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate the strength and resilience of mothers. Let us also remind them that financial literacy is not just a personal tool, it’s a legacy. By teaching and modeling financial responsibility, today’s mothers are laying the foundation for generations to come. As the Good Book says, “Money answereth all things.” So, keep saving, keep investing, and keep believing you are shaping a future of security, stability, and endless possibility.
Happy Mother’s Day!

World Bank hails Ghana’s social cohesion efforts

Robin Mearns (in Smock) shaking hands with the Northern Regional Minister Robin Mearns (in Smock) shaking hands with the Northern Regional Minister

The World Bank has commended Ghana for the remarkable progress achieved under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project, describing its performance as exceeding expectations and delivering beyond initial targets.

This remark was made by Robin Mearns, the World Bank’s Global Director for Social Development, who led a high-level World Bank delegation to tour SOCO project sites and engaged with stakeholders to assess midterm progress, strengthen collaboration, and explore opportunities for potential scaling up the initiative.

“The SOCO Project is not only meeting but exceeding its targets. It is bringing tremendous economic prosperity to regions that have not seen much investment in the past. The scale and inclusiveness of the project are impressive, and I strongly encourage additional funding to extend its reach to the remaining vulnerable districts”, Mearns said.

During the field visit, the delegation inspected community-level interventions in Jinlo along the Salaga corridor, including a CHPS compound and guinea fowl rearing project.

He recounted the story of Fatima, a local farmer whose guinea fowl stock grew from 30 to over 100 birds with SOCO support.

“Fatima’s story is just one example of how SOCO is boosting local livelihoods and building resilience,” he said.

The team also engaged with other income-generating groups such as the Shishegu Soap Makers and toured a newly built livestock market.

These initiatives fall under SOCO’s Local Economic Development (LED) component, which is central to the project’s mission of sustainable community empowerment.

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, described the project as a game changer in addressing both infrastructure gaps and social vulnerability in the six Northern regions. He noted that SOCO’s integrated approach is helping to shape peaceful and thriving communities across the regions.

SOCO Project Coordinator, Ms. Elizabeth Ohenewah Agyei, revealed that the first cycle of the project had delivered 530 community infrastructure subprojects, with 489 completed and handed over as of February 2025.

These include 33 roads and culverts, 59 educational facilities, 66 health centres, 210 water facilities, and 73 rural markets.

She also noted that over 6,200 jobs — many for women, youth, and persons with disabilities — had been created, and 744 livelihood groups with more than 24,000 members had received support to boost local productivity.

Agyei added that a second cycle is underway, targeting the delivery of 680 additional subprojects across the 48 districts.

“The SOCO Project is not just about bricks and blocks. It’s about building community ownership and participation,” she said. “We aim to strengthen the social fabric through inclusive leadership and shared responsibility, which are the true essence of social cohesion.”

The delegation also participated in the inauguration of the Tamale Metropolitan Youth Parliament, a civic engagement initiative under SOCO that promotes youth involvement in governance and peacebuilding.

Nicolas Perrin, World Bank’s Practice Manager for Social Sustainability and Inclusion in West Africa, described the platform as a model worth replicating. “This Youth Parliament exemplifies civic inclusion and leadership development,” he said.

The SOCO Project is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

It operates 48 selected districts across Ghana’s six northern regions with a focus on building inclusive, peaceful, and economically empowered communities along the northern border zones.

‘Don’t be aggrieved over $800, tap into the blessing’- Agradaa to NDC supporters

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Evangelist Patricia Asiedua

Popular evangelist Patricia Asiedua, widely known as Nana Agradaa, has urged members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to be upset over Sammy Gyamfi’s recent gesture toward her.

In a viral video, she clarified that the amount she received was $800, emphasizing that such a sum should not cause outrage among party supporters.

“How much is $800? NDC supporters shouldn’t feel aggrieved because of this. The Bible says you should not covet your neighbour’s blessings, always tap into somebody’s blessings,” she said.

She urged supporters of the party not to view the gesture as unfair or inappropriate but rather as a blessing that they too can experience.

“If Mama Pat has been blessed by Sammy Gyamfi, then supporters of the party should pray to encounter the same blessing from him, she said.

Nana Agradaa also warned that condemning acts of generosity could carry unintended consequences.

“If you condemn the act and someone blesses you, it is a curse,” she declared.

Controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing Gyamfi publicly handing over a large sum of dollars to Agradaa, sparking massive debate on social media regarding the act.

Allocate budget before projects begin – Parliament’s Education Committee to govt

0

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education has urged the government to ensure that budgetary provisions are made available way ahead before projects are initiated.

According to the committee, allocating funds upfront would significantly address the persistent challenges related to infrastructure deficits in schools, which continues to be a major headache for school management, negatively impacting teaching and learning.

The Chairman of the committee, Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe, made this call after touring the
Ghana Senior High School, Koforidua Senior High Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School, and All Nations University, all within the Eastern Region, on Sunday, May 11, as part of the committee’s work to assess the impact of the double-track system in various educational institutions.

“Going forward, I think we should have a budget for projects before we start. So that we don’t waste public money or resources.”

He expressed his satisfaction with the efforts of the school authorities in managing the existing resources and assured them that the committee had taken note of their challenges and would advise the executive accordingly.

On his part, the Deputy Ranking Member of the committee, Mustapha Ussif, encouraged management teams of the schools to maintain their current level of achievement and continue their hard work.

“We’re impressed with the government’s performance and the students,” he stated.

Chiefs threaten legal action against illegal miner, call for govt intervention

0

Chiefs and people of Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region are threatening legal action against a native of Ankaase who is allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities popularly known as Galamsey.

According to the Chiefs and affected farmers, the illegal miner has armed himself with thugs and land guards, forcibly taking over farmlands, claiming ownership of the lands.

He has allegedly compromised the local police, making it difficult for them to take the necessary action against him.

A popular alleged illegal miner known as Abieku, who hails from Ankaase and is the younger brother of the Ankaase Chief, according to Chiefs and people of Asaman Tamfoe, has been consistently harassing innocent farmers with his illegalities.

According to the residents, he carries out his activities day and night with armed land guards forcibly taking over acres of farmland belonging to innocent farmers.

According to them, he mostly moves at night into farms, clear food produce being cocoa, cassava or palm, digs the soil suspected to be containing minerals and conveys them with trucks to Ankaase for onward washing.

Nana Adae Frimpong Manso, the Nifahene of Asaman Tamfoe, is a victim and has several close relatives whose farms have also been taken over by the illegal miner popularly known as Abieku.

“We have reported the case to the police, but up till now, Abeiku has not been arrested. His accomplices were arrested once but were released the same day. Up until now, Abeiku is a free man,” he said.

According to the farmers and residents, several attempts to get police involvement in this issue have not yielded any positive results.

“Abeiku claims the land is his, but that is not true. Our ancestors cultivated the land and handed it over to us. I am even older than him, so how did our land become his?” a farmer fumed.

When the team visited a disputed land in the area, Abieku was present, supervising the reclamation of one of the farmlands he allegedly forcibly took from one of the farmers.

The Chief of Asaman Tamfoe, Osabarima Kwame Koh, visibly angry by the situation, has threatened legal action against the illegal miner.

“Abeiku and his cohorts have been involved in galamsey. Whatever he is doing, he has to be brought to book. He has to be taken to court. And whatever compensation there is, he has to pay to this town,” he stated.

However, Abieku, who has denied engaging in illegal mining, is said to have rather served court sermons to the Nifahene of Asaman Tamfoe, the NPP Constituency Secretary who doubles as the NADMO boss for the district, the NDC constituency chairman and the newly confirmed DCE, who are all part of the community mining committee, accusing them of rather engaging in galamsey, an assertion vehemently denied by the Chief of Asaman Tamfoe.

Barcelona 4-3 Real Madrid LIVE: Mbappe completes his hat-trick

0

Hello and welcome to another MARCA in English live blog, this time taking you through the biggest game of the 24/25 LaLiga season as Barcelona host Real Madrid.

The stage is set for another thrilling edition of El Clasico as Barcelona hosts Real Madrid at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys. With just four points separating the two La Liga powerhouses, this match could be decisive in the title race.

Barcelona currently sits atop the table with 79 points, while Real Madrid follows closely behind with 75. A win for the Catalan side would stretch their lead to seven points, all but ending Madrid’s title hopes with only a few games remaining in the season.

Barcelona enters the game with confidence, having convincingly defeated Real Madrid 4-0 earlier this season at the Santiago Bernabeu. One of the standout performers for Barcelona this campaign has been Lamine Yamal, the teenage sensation who continues to impress in attack. With several senior forwards sidelined, Yamal’s creativity and composure in front of goal will be essential.

On the other side, Real Madrid is banking on the talents of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior to turn the tide. Mbappe, in his first El Clasico, brings explosive pace and lethal finishing, while Vinícius offers flair and unpredictability on the wing.

However, Real Madrid is significantly weakened in defense, missing key players like Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, and Ferland Mendy. With such a depleted backline, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will be under immense pressure to keep his side in the game.

Tactically, fans can expect a classic clash of styles. Barcelona‘s high pressing and intricate passing will go head-to-head with Madrid’s trademark counter-attacks. Both sides are known for their attacking prowess, and with so much at stake, the match promises drama and intensity from the first whistle to the last.

Why Charles Bissue settles hospital bills for new mothers each year

0

Former presidential staffer Charles Bissue Former presidential staffer Charles Bissue

Every year on Mother’s Day weekend, former presidential staffer Charles Bissue honours his late mother’s memory by paying the hospital bills of mothers who have just given birth, a tradition inspired by his own birth story and the challenges his mother faced.

His latest gesture of kindness took place at the Essikado Government Hospital in the Western Region, where he settled the bills of all mothers who delivered between Friday, May 9, and Sunday, May 11, 2025.

In an audio message, Bissue shared the emotional story behind his commitment to supporting mothers.

“I was born on February 14, 1973. At the time, my mother was heavily pregnant, and my father didn’t have money, so he traveled in search of work. When she went into labour, there were no mobile phones, so she couldn’t reach him.

“She tried to hold on, but the pain became too much, so she rushed to a maternity home, Auntie Cece’s place in Laterbiokorshie. The midwife admitted her and allowed her to go home, trusting that my dad would come back to settle the bill. Eventually, my grandmother and father came and paid. That story stayed with me, and after my mother passed, I decided to do something for mothers every year,” he stated.

Charles Bissue noted that he began this initiative three years ago, following his mother’s passing.

“I’ve been doing this for the past three years. On Mother’s Day, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I pay the bills of new mothers, whether it’s for a Caesarean section or normal delivery. This is because mothers go through a lot,” he said.

“Sometimes the husband or the man may not be working and going through labor while worrying about finances is extremely stressful. That stress can lead to complications, even the loss of a child. That’s why I do this every year,” he added.

Several beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude for Charles Bissue’s generosity, saying it has helped ease a huge financial burden.

“My wife delivered at this facility, and the bill was paid by Charles Bissue in honor of Mother’s Day. He’s covering the bills of all women who delivered from Friday to Sunday, and we are extremely grateful,” said one husband.

Another beneficiary, a mother who had undergone a Caesarean section, shared her appreciation.

“I gave birth at Essikado Hospital through CS, and I want to say thank you to Honourable Charles Bissue for this kind gesture. God bless him wherever he is.”

Healthcare workers at the hospital also praised Charles Bissue’s continued support.

“Last year he paid the bills of new mothers, and this year he has done the same. We are truly appreciative. God bless him,” one staff member stated.

This shift is not about rejecting hard work but about redefining strength to include vulnerability and self-awareness.

It is very important that choosing the soft life as a man does not make you any less of man. It just means that you are prioritizing tourself.

In Ghana, mental health issues among men are often overlooked due to cultural beliefs that associate mental illness with curses or spiritual attacks . This stigma discourages men from seeking help, leading to untreated conditions and, in severe cases, suicide.

Globally, men are more likely to commit suicide than women, with some studies indicating that men account for about 75% of all suicides . Adopting a soft life encourages men to seek support, engage in self-care practices, and prioritise their mental well-being.

2. Breaking the Silence on Emotional Expression

Traditional Ghanaian masculinity often discourages men from expressing vulnerability, with phrases like “boys don’t cry” reinforcing emotional suppression .

This cultural norm can lead to emotional isolation and mental health challenges. The soft life promotes emotional openness, allowing men to express their feelings, seek help when needed, and build stronger, more supportive relationships.

3. Challenging Societal Expectations

Ghanaian society often places heavy expectations on men to be the primary breadwinners and to uphold traditional roles without showing weakness . These pressures can lead to stress and burnout.

Embracing the soft life means challenging these outdated norms, recognising that seeking balance and self-care is a sign of strength, not weakness.

4. Enhancing Physical Health

Chronic stress and neglect of self-care can lead to various health issues, including hypertension and heart disease.

The soft life encourages men to engage in activities that promote physical health, such as regular exercise, adequate rest, and healthy eating. By prioritising these aspects, men can improve their overall health and quality of life.

5. Fostering Personal Growth and Fulfillment

The soft life is not about avoiding responsibility but about creating space for personal growth and fulfillment. By embracing self-care, emotional expression, and challenging societal expectations, men can lead more balanced and fulfilling lives. This approach allows them to pursue their passions, build meaningful relationships, and contribute positively to society.

The soft life is not a gendered concept but a holistic approach to living well. By embracing its principles, Ghanaian men can foster better mental and physical health, build stronger relationships, and lead more fulfilling lives. It’s time to redefine masculinity to include self-care, emotional expression, and intentional living.

Over 20 houses torched in Gumyoko amid Bawku chieftaincy conflict spillover

0

At least 12 houses were burnt down last night by unknown assailants in the Gumyoko community in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.

Sources reveal that residents had deserted the Gumyoko community nearly a month ago due to repeated attacks. The assailants allegedly exploited the empty settlement to burn down homes and other properties.

Parliamentary Education Committee urges gov’t to budget before starting school projects to end long-term stalls

0

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education has called on the government to ensure adequate budgeting is done before commencing educational infrastructure projects, in order to prevent future delays and abandoned projects.

This recommendation follows the committee’s inspection tour of senior high schools in the Eastern Region, where members observed widespread infrastructural decay and several long-abandoned school projects.

The schools visited—Ghana Senior High School (GHANAS), Koforidua Secondary Technical School, and New Juaben Senior High Commercial School—are grappling with significant infrastructure challenges. Many buildings are in disrepair, while various projects initiated by successive governments remain incomplete, some for over a decade.

Heads of the schools informed the committee that urgent infrastructure upgrades are required to support the transition from the double-track to the single-track system. They highlighted a lack of classroom space, overcrowded dormitories, and furniture shortages as major concerns affecting teaching and learning.

“The current number of classrooms stands at 52, and we have a deficit of 20 if we are to fully transition to a single-track system,” stated Diana Akosua Minah, Headmistress of GHANAS.

Following the visit, the committee commended school administrators for maintaining operations under difficult conditions but emphasized the need for a strategic funding approach.

“We have taken note of projects at various levels of completion—some at 80 to 90 percent. With a little more funding, they can be completed and put to use. Some have been stalled for more than 10 years. That’s a waste of public resources,” said Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, a member of the Education Committee.
“Going forward, we must have a budget in place before we begin any new project to avoid wasting public money.”

Deputy Ranking Member Mustapha Hamid added that the committee would submit its findings and recommendations to the Minister for Education, emphasizing the urgency of reverting fully to the single-track system.

“This is a policy the government has committed to, and as the committee with oversight responsibility, we’ll ensure our recommendations reach the Minister for Education.”

In a related appeal, Professor Samuel Donkor, President of All Nations University, urged the government to implement inclusive policies that would enhance the participation and development of private universities.

“The current landscape often treats us as secondary players. This must change if Ghana is to truly harness education as a driver of national development,” he said.

Why did Akufo-Addo govt’s national security support an ‘opposition party’?

0

Startling revelation last week by Kwaku Adu-Boahene, former Director General of the National Signals Bureau, that the security apparatus of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government made huge payment to the then opposition party has raised eyebrows.

Adu-Boahene, in a letter he wrote from the custody of EOCO, listed a breakdown of the disbursement of some 49 million cedis he is being prosecuted for stealing.

He disclosed he paid a whopping GH¢8.3 million to an opposition party supposedly of the New Patriotic Party to aid their 2024 opposition party’s election campaign.

The alleged payment to the NPP’s political opponent by the security apparatus of the party’s own government has been heavily criticised with many people questioning why the then government would make such a payment to the opposition party.

In view of this, a Development Economist and lecturer, Dr Margaret Coomson, has described as “betrayal” the payment made to the opposition party.

It is a “stab in the back of the NPP and its 2024 presidential and parliamentary candidates” by the then government, she wrote in an article.

Read full article below:

Why did the Akufo-Addo government’s national security apparatus support the NDC in the 2024 election?

By Dr. Margaret Coomson, Development Economist

Imagine Real Madrid making a huge cash donation to its fiercest rivals, Barcelona, to aid Barca’s transfer activities. Or imagine Barcelona, sending technical and other form of support to Real Madrid, to aid Madrid’s preparation ahead of a crucial El Classic, to decide the La Liga title.

Such a scenario, to both sets of rival fans, is unfathomable. And in the most unlikely event that any official from either club, sanctioned such a strange gesture, it would be deemed sacreligious and unforgivable!

Well, that’s what happened right here in Ghana, in our political space in the build up to the crucial 2024 Elections.

According to former Director General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahene, the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government, through its security apparatus, supported the NPP’s fiercest rival in the election, with a mindboggling financial support of GHS 8.3m Cedis!

Yes you read right; the NPP Government, according to the former intelligence Chief, made a whopping financial assistance of GHS 8.3m to its opponent to aid their elections operations.

Interesting, isn’t it? Well, to some people, it is scandalous and a betrayal of unimaginable proportion, for the security apparatus of a sitting government, to extend such a support to a political rival seeking to axe the government and the NPP from office.

It is, therefore, unsurprising, and understandable that a number of NPP party stalwarts are seething with rage, following revelation by Kwabena Adu-Boahene, in his explosive letter, which also revealed another gleeful presentation of brand new vehicles to the then President-elect, at a time the President-elect himself had told the whole world that government’s coffers were empty to the bone!

A number of high-ranking NPP members I am very close to, have expressed their disgust over the what they rightly deem a complete betrayal by its own government and officials, against the NPP party and it’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Why did our own Government’s National security apparatus support the NDC in the 2024 election? This revelation is shocking and I am very sad our own government, our own people did this against our party,” one leading national executive member of the party told me.

The angry national executive official believes the government’s national security apparatus could not have made such a huge payment to the opposition without official authorisation from the apex of the then government.

This is assertion is true, and I completely side with it. There was no way one person, in this case Adu Boahene alone, from the national security apparatus, could have made such a treacherous payment to a party’s rival without the blessings and support of the very top.

Adu Boahene’s claims, which have so far not been denied by key elements in the erstwhile government’s security chiefs, including Security Minister and National Security Coordinator, is a complete betrayal and a painful stab in the back of the NPP party, its Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates.

Concerned NPP members, and indeed Ghanaians, would be right to question the motives of those who planned and executed such huge payment by the Akufo-Addo government to its main political rival?

Since the shocking disclosure by Adu Boahene, I have been imagining what really was the motive of those who did this to betray their own party in a crucial election.

Those who ordered the payment and those who executed it, surely would have done so for two reasons; to sabotage the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as is being speculated, or an attempt to buy their own security should the opposition party win, a fantasy which seems to have backfired, necessitating a straw-clutching disclosure by Adu Boahene.

Well, if you thought it’s unfathomable for a political party in government to extend huge financial support to its arch rival ahead of a crucial election to aid their preparations, you should know that the Akufo-Addo government, through its national security apparatus, stabbed its own party, the NPP in the back.

The lingering question remains: why did the Akufo-Addo government’s national security apparatus support the NPP’s arch rival in the 2024 election?

This is a question true and concerned members of the NPP, including the party’s 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates, will justifiably continue to ask themselves.

Ghana’s Dacosta Antwi Named in Tournament’s Best XI for U-20 AFCON Egypt 2025 Group Stage

0

Black Satellites’ central defender DaCosta Antwi has earned a significant recognition at the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025, having been named by the tournament’s Technical Study Group among the standout eleven players from the group stage.

Antwi, who plies his trade with Ghanaian Premier League club, Young Apostles FC, has been a pillar in Ghana’s backline, and featured prominently in all three of the Black Satellites’ matches in Group C. Operating on the left side of Ghana’s central defence, the young defender has drawn praise for his composure, tactical intelligence, and consistency. According to the Technical Study Group, Antwi acquitted himself with distinction—showing steadiness under pressure, progressing play effectively from the back, and nullifying threats that came through his zone.

His selection as one of the top defenders in the tournament’s group phase underscores not only his individual brilliance but also the solidity of Ghana’s defensive structure, with the Satellites having conceded only one goal in the tournament so far. The young defender’s inclusion will serve as a major boost ahead of Ghana’s high-stakes quarter-final clash against host nation Egypt.

Reacting to the news, Antwi remained humble and grounded. “I didn’t expect this at all. It’s an honour, but I owe it all to the team. We defend together, and we win together. I’m just doing my part,” he said. “There’s still work to do. Our eyes are on the main goal—to beat Egypt, get to the semi-finals, and book our ticket to the World Cup. That’s the real prize.”

Ghana’s quarter-final against Egypt is scheduled for Monday, May 12, at the new Suez Stadium, with kick-off set for 6:00 p.m. local time (15:00 GMT). With Antwi and his colleagues in defence, including Aaron Essel, Ofori McCarthy and goalkeeper Gidios Aseako, continuing to protect the Satellites at the rear, Ghana will be hoping to extend their impressive run and inch closer to continental glory and qualification for the U-20 World Cup Chile 2025.

‘Illegal mining is not NPP or NDC, it’s a national disaster’ – Obiri Boahen

0

Former Deputy General Secretary of NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen Former Deputy General Secretary of NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has called for a non-partisan approach to tackling illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking in on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Nana Obiri Boahen stated that illegal mining should not be politicised, noting that both the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP have failed to adequately address the menace.

“Illegal mining is not a partisan matter. It is a general problem we are facing as a country,” he said.

He stressed that not all mining activities are illegal and expressed concern over the tendency to label licensed miners as galamsey operators.

“When someone has a license to mine, why do we describe the person as an illegal miner?” he questioned, urging the public and media to make clear distinctions.

Reflecting on the political landscape, the lawyer criticised both major parties for their inconsistency in addressing the issue.

“When the NPP was in power, the opposition was loud in fighting galamsey, even calling for a state of emergency. Now that the NDC is in power, the problem persists, yet they have not declared a state of emergency,” he said.

Nana Obiri Boahen noted that the NDC has been in office for over 120 days, yet the government has not taken decisive emergency action against illegal mining, raising concerns about the sincerity of political leaders.

“This should let Ghanaians know that our democracy is untruthful and dishonest,” he remarked.

I was the one who asked Sammy Gyamfi for money to buy fuel

0

Popular fetish priestess, turned televangelist, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has clarified the circumstances under which the Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Gold Board and National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi gave her a large sum of dollars.

In a viral video, Nana Agradaa explained that she was the one who asked Sammy Gyamfi for money to buy fuel, a request she commonly makes when meeting with ministers.

“I’ve seen all the commentary following Sammy Gyamfi’s kind gesture, with some people claiming that I insulted President Mahama. Let me set the record straight, I was the one who asked him for some money to buy fuel. Whenever I meet ministers, I usually do that,” she stated.

The televangelist also questioned why the bloggers who captured the video left out the part she went on her knees to apologise to JM and Lordina Mahama.

“Why did they leave that part out?” she asked, implying that her apology was not given the same level of attention.

Nana Agradaa further revealed that Sammy Gyamfi had offered her advice during their interaction, suggesting that she should refrain from insulting others and focus on her pastoral work instead of becoming involved in politics.

Yendi Youth Parliament challenged to establish smock market to boost local economy

0

The Chief Executive of the Rural Water Development Programme of the Church of Christ (RWDP-COC) and Founder of the Northern College of Science and Technology, Dr. Nathaniel Adams Jr., has called for the establishment of a smock market in Yendi.

He noted that no such market exists in the five regions of the north and challenged the Yendi Youth Parliament to take up the initiative.

“I want to challenge this Parliament with the support of the traditional leaders as one of your goals, take it up and consider the setting up of the Yendi smoke market and the Yendi Smoke village.”

Speaking as the guest speaker at the inauguration of the Yendi Parliament over the weekend, he emphasised the significance of smocks as official traditional wear for Ghanaian men.

“He said, “Today, the smock is recognised as the official traditional attire for Ghanaian men—our Presidents, Vice Presidents, and any Ghanaian attending an event with a traditional theme typically appear on TV wearing a smock.”

Highlighting the growing recognition of smocks across the country, Dr Adams stressed the need for a one-stop center where people can access different types of smocks.

He said that Chinese businesses are printing Ghanaian fabrics but fortunately, they have not ventured into the smock area, urging the people of Yendi to seize this opportunity.

The establishment of the smock market, he said, would create jobs for the youth, reduce migration to southern Ghana for menial jobs, and provide an additional income stream for the youth, boosting the economy of the area.

Dr Adams tasked the youth to collaborate with traditional authorities, the assembly, and other stakeholders to bring the project to fruition.

To kick-start the initiative, he donated GH20,000 to support the commencement of the work.

The Yendi Municipal Coordinator, Abdul Razak Yakah, praised the SOCO project and the National Youth Authority for establishing the Yendi Youth Parliament.

He stated that the initiative would groom the youth for responsible roles, contributing to both community and national development.

Mr. Razak emphasised that President John Mahama’s administration agenda prioritises youth empowerment, enabling them to drive development and promote entrepreneurship.

He underscored that the Youth Parliament is a platform for meaningful action, not just a gathering. A citation was presented to Dr Nathaniel Adams Jr. for his commendation in supporting the youth of the area.

A 20-year-old Level 500 Doctor of Optometry student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Chopel Danie, has earned massive admiration, not only for his academic ambition but also for funding his education through the sale of sachet water.

Known in the community as “Doctor H2O”, he began selling water in 2019, after completing senior high school.

With limited financial support, he took it upon himself to work and save towards his university education, he told 3news.com.

“This is what I’ve been doing to support my parents since 2019,” Daniel shared. “Since I completed SHS in 2021, this has been how I raised money to buy my admission form. I mostly feel shy, but my profit is always worth more than any form of mockery,” he stated.

Beyond selling, he has a mission to inspire other young people as he travels extensively across various markets in Ghana.

He has urged them to find honest means to support their families and resist temptations such as internet fraud and crime.

“I try my best to preach to the youth to be more productive in supporting their parents rather than pulling guns and frauding people,” he said.

Daniel’s long-term goal is to establish a water production company, provide clean water for the public and also offer employment to the vulnerable youth on the street.

Cheap food near gutters comes with high risks of contamination

0

Dr Nana Ama Frimpomaa Agyapong, a Lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Cape Coast (UCC), has cautioned Ghanaians against patronising food sold near gutters, particularly cooked rice or “waakye” they consider to be cheaper and more delicious.

She warned that such foods were highly prone to contamination, exposing consumers to serious foodborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.

“Food sold near gutters may seem cheaper and tastier, but such environments are highly contaminated with filth, bacteria and harmful pathogens that can easily pollute food, leading to serious foodborne diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, and dysentery.”

Speaking at a symposium on “advocacy for mandatory front-of-pack warning labelling in Ghana,” Dr Agyapong emphasised the health risks associated with consuming food from unhygienic environments.

It was organised by Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND) in collaboration with SEND Ghana to educate students of UCC on healthy and unhealthy diets and also chart the course for a proposed policy framework on Front-of-package warning labelling and Nutrition Profiling Models.

“The gutters often contain sewage, refuse and stagnant water, which attract flies and breed germs,” Dr Agyapong noted, adding that choosing safe, hygienic food was not about taste or price, but about protecting one’s health and that of their families.

She encouraged Ghanaians to adopt healthier eating habits by incorporating more vegetables such as garden eggs, kontomire and turkey berries (Kwahu sosaa), as well as eating at least one fruit a day.

Dr Agyapong further proposed buying fruits in season or in bulk to make them more affordable for balanced diet.

Other speakers at the forum, including Prof Kingsley Asare Preko, Vice Dean at the School of Medical Sciences, UCC, said food hygiene, particularly the front of- pack labelling advocacy aligned with the broader national public health goals to reduce non-communicable diseases linked to poor diet and food safety.

He highlighted the importance of food safety and nutrition education in preventing illnesses that often stemmed from contaminated street foods.

Prof Preko said food safety transcended political affiliation, gender and social status, highlighting its critical importance to the well-being of all citizens and its role in accelerating national development.

He advocated the enactment and support of legislation, mandating front-of-pack nutrition labelling, underscoring its benefits as a tool to promote healthier food choices and enhance transparency in the food industry, thereby protecting consumers.

SEND Ghana, a pro-poor policy advocates that sponsored the programme, called on the government to boost the school feeding grant per pupil, stressing that only with this increase could children consistently enjoy hot, nutritious, well-balanced meals, at least, once a day.

Ms Baaba Sam, representative of SEND Ghana, explained that the symposium was to empower Ghanaians to take charge of their nutritional needs, adding that wholesome diet was essential not just for physical growth but also for sharpening young minds, directly elevating academic success and overall health.

“Every Ghanaian should be able to take charge of his or her nutritional needs by identifying a healthy balanced diet from unhealthy one,” she stressed.

Dr Agyapong urged stakeholders to support the programme with funding to help fulfil its mission to eradicate hunger and malnutrition among school children to sustain their health and learning potentials.

“We urge the government to significantly raise the school feeding grant to ensure every child savours balanced meal, tackling malnutrition issues like stunted growth head-on and unlock brighter educational futures nationwide.”

Ntim Fordjour slams NDC appointees over lavish spending, calls for accountability

0

Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a scathing attack on appointees of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of excessive spending and unexplained wealth after just 120 days in office.

In a post shared on social media, the MP alleged that some individuals—whom he claims have never held formal employment—are publicly flaunting expensive gadgets and luxury vehicles, including a $450,000 Range Rover Autobiography.

He argued that the value of these items could instead be used to build classroom blocks in their communities.

Ntim Fordjour criticised what he described as a “toothless” Code of Conduct, arguing that it fails to hold such officials accountable.

He also mocked NDC supporters for enduring hardship under the same leadership they defend online.

“You worked, they’re chopping!” Fordjour stated, urging citizens to demand transparency and accountability from government appointees.

He emphasised that the ceremony was not merely a celebration for the institution but a landmark for the entire healthcare sector in Ghana.

“This is not just a celebration for Family Health University,” he remarked. “It is a milestone for Ghana’s healthcare sector and a testament to our shared commitment to building a healthier, stronger nation.”

Since its establishment, the institution has trained more than 190 medical doctors and over 1,000 nurses and midwives.

In his address, Prof. Kwawukume reflected on the university’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a fully chartered institution. He described the recent Presidential Charter as both a recognition of academic excellence and a call to greater national responsibility. He announced that the university will intensify its focus on action-based research, particularly in areas of urgent national importance such as maternal health, infectious diseases, and mental healthcare.

“We must bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and community impact,” Prof. Kwawukume stated.

He disclosed plans to expand postgraduate medical education and introduce new academic programmes in health technology and public health policy. He also called for stronger collaboration with international universities and research bodies, noting that Family Health University is committed to preparing future healthcare leaders capable of addressing tomorrow’s challenges.

He urged the graduating and matriculating students to embody the university’s core values of service, excellence, and empathy, stressing that they are not merely entering a profession but taking up a sacred duty to save lives, offer hope, and lead with integrity.

The ceremony also celebrated academic excellence, with outstanding students receiving awards in various categories. Miss Matah Naoussi Leaticia Brenda, Valedictorian of the MBChB Class of 2024, emerged as the top performer, sweeping all available academic awards in her programme and receiving the prize for Overall Best MBChB Graduating Student. “You’d Have Praised Him If We Won” — Ursula Owusu Fires at NPP Members Blaming Akufo-Addo

0

Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has hit out at members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have blamed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the party’s recent electoral misfortunes.

According to ModernGhana, In a social media post, the outspoken legislator expressed disappointment in what she described as a wave of unjust criticism being directed at the President.

According to her, many of those attacking Akufo-Addo today would have hailed him had the party emerged victorious in the elections. “Thank you to all of you who are busy vilifying him today and blaming him for our defeat,” she remarked.

Owusu-Ekuful revealed the President’s long-standing commitment to the NPP, both in and out of government. She noted that Akufo-Addo played a pivotal role in keeping the party united during their years in opposition and continued to support it financially even while in power.

The former Minister dismissed claims that the President undermined the campaign of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, calling such accusations “illogical.”

She pointed out that Akufo-Addo not only provided leadership but also offered consistent financial support to constituencies, regional offices, and Members of Parliament.

His backing, she suggested, went beyond political strategy—it was personal sacrifice.

Highlighting key achievements during his tenure, such as improvements in electricity, education, job creation, and road infrastructure, she questioned the party’s internal loyalty.

“If we don’t appreciate the efforts of people like Akufo-Addo, is the NPP worth dying for?” she said.

Pope Leo appeals for no more war in first Sunday address

0

Pope Leo XIV appealed for “no more war” in a message to world powers during his first Sunday, May 11, address at the Vatican.

Reflecting on current conflicts, the newly selected pontiff called for a “lasting peace” in the war in Ukraine, a ceasefire in Gaza, and welcomed Saturday’s agreement to end recent hostilities between India and Pakistan.

He said he was “deeply hurt” by events in Gaza, expressed hope for a “lasting accord” between India and Pakistan, and wished for a “authentic, true and lasting peace” in Ukraine.

The Pope also recited the Regina Caeli prayer, in honour of the Virgin Mary, to the crowd in St Peter’s Square.

Pope Leo was chosen as the new leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday, following a two-day conclave in Vatican City and the death of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

On Saturday, he visited a shrine outside Rome and then prayed before Francis’ tomb inside the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Pope Leo will be formally inaugurated at a mass in St Peter’s Square next week on 18 May.

Speaking from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, he said: “The immense tragedy of the Second World War ended 80 years ago… now we’re facing the tragedy of a third world war in pieces.

“I would also like to address the powerful people of the world, repeating the always-current call: ‘no more war’.”

The pontiff continued: “I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people.

“May whatever is possible be done to reach an authentic, true and lasting peace as quickly as possible. May all the prisoners be freed. May children return to their families.

“And I am deeply hurt by what is happening in the Gaza Strip.

“May a ceasefire immediately come into effect. May humanitarian aid be allowed into the civilian population, and may all hostages be freed.

He went on: “I was happy to hear, on the other hand, that there was a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and I hope that through the coming negotiations we might soon come to a lasting accord.”

His remarks come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, set out competing plans for a peace process to bring the three-year invasion of Ukraine to an end.

In the Middle East, Israel has cut off all humanitarian aid entering Gaza and resumed its military offensive in the Palestinian territory following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement.

Meanwhile, India and Pakistan agreed to a tentative ceasefire on Saturday after days of cross-border military strikes that followed an attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir on 22 April.

It has been a busy week for the pontiff, who held his first Mass as Pope in the Sistine Chapel on Friday before speaking to cardinals on Saturday.

During this meeting, he described himself as an unworthy choice for Pope and vowed to continue the “precious legacy” of his predecessor.

He highlighted the importance of missionary work and discussion, as well as care for those he called the “least and the rejected”.

He explained he had chosen the name Leo after a 19th-century Pope known for his teaching on social justice.

The new Pope also suggested that the development of artificial intelligence and other advances meant the church was necessary today for the defence of human dignity and justice.

“Peace be with you all,” Pope Leo XIV says in his first speech

He is due to hold an audience with the media on Monday ahead of his inauguration next Sunday.

As part of that mass, he will deliver a homily in the presence of numerous heads of state and dignitaries.

The 69-year-old is the 267th occupant of the throne of St Peter, and the first American to become a pontiff. He will lead members of the Catholic Church’s global community of 1.4bn people.

Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, he worked for many years as a missionary in Peru before being made an archbishop there. He also has Peruvian nationality.

Although Leo was born in the US, the Vatican described him as the second pope from the Americas. Pope Francis, from Argentina, was the first.

Pope Leo is widely seen as a moderate who can offer “continuity” and “unity” following the death of his predecessor last month.

The new pontiff is believed to have shared Francis’ views on migrants, the poor and the environment.

In his first speech, he told the crowds he wanted “to walk together with you as a united Church searching all together for peace and justice”.
