Ghana Pays Top Price for Cocoa, Board Insists

0

Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD)
Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD)

If you’re a cocoa farmer in West Africa, Ghana is the place to be, according to the country’s cocoa regulator.

The Ghana Cocoa Board, known as COCOBOD, has released new data defending its pricing, stating it now offers the highest farmgate rate in the region.

The announcement is a direct response to growing claims that farmers in neighboring Côte d’Ivoire might be better off. COCOBOD says the numbers tell a different story. Its figures show Ghana pays 3,228.75 cedis per 64kg bag. When you break that down, it comes to 51,660 cedis per tonne.

That translates to a significant difference. For each bag they sell, Ghanaian farmers earn 675 cedis more than their Ivorian counterparts. Per tonne, the gap widens to over 10,800 cedis. The board was firm, calling this a matter of fact, not interpretation.

This pricing strategy does more than just put more money in farmers’ pockets, COCOBOD says. It also acts as a shield against currency fluctuations and helps combat smuggling across Ghana’s borders, a persistent issue that hurts legal sales.

The statement emphasized that the policy reflects a commitment to ensuring farmers see fair returns for their labor. It also tied the premium price to Ghana’s long-standing reputation for producing some of the world’s highest-quality cocoa beans.

Analysts see the public data release as a strategic move. It comes at a time when farmer discontent and smuggling risks have been on the rise. By putting detailed figures forward, COCOBOD is clearly trying to reassure growers and solidify Ghana’s position as a leader in the global cocoa market.

Kwame Dadzie raises alarm over rapid return of street beggars to Accra

Prominent media personality Kwame Dadzie Prominent media personality Kwame Dadzie

Prominent media personality Kwame Dadzie has raised serious concerns about the rapid return of street beggars to Accra shortly after their deportation.

Kwame Dadzie is an arts and culture journalist with the Multimedia Group. He writes for myjoyonline.com and hosts Ghana’s leading entertainment talk show, Showbiz A-Z, on Joy FM.

Additionally, he co-hosts Daybreak Hitz, a popular entertainment and lifestyle morning show in Ghana.

Dadzie expressed alarm over the situation and questioned the possibility of exploitation behind the return of these deported beggars.

“How do you deport so many people, and they’re back in just a few months? Is someone orchestrating this?” Dadzie asked, expressing his bewilderment and demanding answers.

In an interview on Hitz 103.9 FM on August 20, 2025, he further questioned the circumstances surrounding this recurring issue, hinting at potential exploitation.

“Perhaps someone is facilitating their return, because it’s hard to understand how these individuals can be deported and then, in less than three months, be back on the streets, making us feel very uncomfortable,” he added.

‘Comical’ – Ablakwa dismisses calls to resign over private jet controversy

0

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has responded to calls for his resignation and an apology following President John Dramani Mahama’s recent trip to Japan, where the president was accused of using a private jet.

Sections of the public, particularly supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), have demanded Ablakwa’s resignation. They cite a pledge he made while in opposition — that he would resign if a future National Democratic Congress (NDC) government he was part of ever allowed the president to use luxury private jets, just as then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did.

‘We are expecting your resignation’ – Ntim Fordjour chides Ablakwa over Mahama’s foreign travel

In a statement shared on social media, however, Ablakwa insisted that he had nothing to apologise for or resign over. He described the comparisons between former President Akufo-Addo’s private jet use and President Mahama’s recent trip as “ridiculous attempts to equalise based on unscrupulous falsehoods in a futile effort at whitewashing President Akufo-Addo.”

The North Tongu MP stressed that he has no regrets about his exposés on Akufo-Addo’s travels, which he said were part of his parliamentary oversight role and helped save the country millions of dollars.

“I owe no one an apology for leading this consequential and noble oversight to protect taxpayers. I am confident the vast majority of Ghanaians are appreciative of my sacrifices — this is a legacy I will forever cherish. I did it in good conscience for my country and not for the praises of those who cannot look beyond their stomachs,” Ablakwa wrote.

He added that it was “comical” that those calling for his resignation were the same people now attempting to replicate his oversight role but failing miserably.

“It is really comical that the very people demanding of me to apologise or resign are the same people trying so hard to emulate my actions — the overwhelming verdict by Ghanaians, however, is that, so far, the ‘wannabes’ have been spectacularly disastrous. In all humility, I am now inundated with appeals from well-meaning Ghanaians asking that I urgently organise a workshop for the disgraced MPs. That is what happens when you are not motivated by truth, patriotism, diligence, principle, sincerity, and the national interest,” he said.

According to him, his earlier stance on Akufo-Addo’s private jet rentals was vindicated when the former president eventually abandoned the practice in his final year in office.

“I was long vindicated when President Akufo-Addo reluctantly listened to me and the good people of Ghana who were justifiably outraged by his profligate conduct, and therefore had to stop the practice of renting ultra-luxury executive jets at taxpayer expense in his final year in office,” Ablakwa added.

GhanaWeb FactCheck: NPP MP Assafuah lied over claims of private jet use for Mahama’s Japan trip

Read his full write-up below:

THE PRESIDENTIAL JET DEBATE — MY PROUD LEGACY FOR GOD AND COUNTRY AND WHY DISHONEST SPIN AND HATE CAMPAIGNS CANNOT DEFEAT TRUTH

1. I remain extremely proud of my parliamentary oversight as Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, particularly on my legislative scrutiny of presidential travels. My principled position has not changed and will not change. It has always been for God and Country.

2. I am quite certain former President Akufo-Addo is also proud of the forceful arguments he made in Parliament as Ranking Member, specifically on 15th February 2000, opposing plans by President Rawlings to purchase a new executive jet — primarily on the basis that it wasn’t a priority. Ironically, his misguided hirelings and minions vilifying me conveniently conceal former President Akufo-Addo’s documented track record. (See attached the Parliamentary Hansard of February 15, 2000, containing Akufo-Addo’s revealing debate.)

3. Former President Akufo-Addo didn’t think President Rawlings’ presidential jet acquisition should be exempt from the principles of prioritisation, prudence, value for money and transparency. So what changed when he became President 17 years later? Why is Akufo-Addo’s conduct in 2000 commendable but my conduct between 2021 and 2024 condemnable?

4. Let me emphasise for the avoidance of doubt: I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever for leading a long-drawn-out, successful, patriotic campaign against former President Akufo-Addo’s unjustified, wasteful and extremely reckless charter of ultra-luxury jets at US$18,000 an hour, particularly at a time Ghana’s presidential jet was available and in pristine condition.

5. My oversight mandate was strictly inspired by the national interest and the patriotic objective of protecting the public purse — consistent with former President Akufo-Addo’s own eloquent pledge.

6. I owe no one an apology for leading this consequential and noble oversight to protect taxpayers. I am confident the vast majority of Ghanaians are appreciative of my sacrifices — this is a legacy I will forever cherish. I did it in good conscience for my country and not for the praises of those who cannot look beyond their stomachs.

7. It is really comical that the very people demanding that I apologise or resign are the same people trying so hard to emulate my actions. The overwhelming verdict by Ghanaians, however, is that, so far, the “wannabes” have been spectacularly disastrous. In all humility, I am now inundated with appeals from well-meaning Ghanaians asking that I urgently organise a workshop for the disgraced MPs. That is what happens when you are not motivated by truth, patriotism, diligence, principle, sincerity and the national interest.

8. I was long vindicated when President Akufo-Addo reluctantly listened to me and the good people of Ghana who were justifiably outraged by his profligate conduct, and therefore had to stop the practice of renting ultra-luxury executive jets at taxpayer expense in his final year in office.

9. The dishonest hirelings would want us to forget that from the second half of 2023, all the way to the end of his tenure on 6th January 2025, President Akufo-Addo abandoned chartered travels and resorted to the use of Ghana’s Presidential Jet. Indeed, I had occasion to commend President Akufo-Addo for the positive change of mind — even though many have argued that he stopped the extravagant rentals because Ghana became bankrupt and went in for a $3 billion IMF bailout under stringent conditions. (See my commendation of President Akufo-Addo attached.)

10. That President Akufo-Addo relied exclusively on Ghana’s Presidential Jet for over 18 months until he left office confirms that I wasn’t wrong when I insisted that the Presidential Jet — purchased by President Kufuor in 2008 for US$37 million and used by the previous Mills and Mahama presidencies — was fit for purpose.

11. This is why, during the period President Akufo-Addo refused to use the presidential jet, other African presidents were happy to make good use of it.

12. It ought to be recalled that when I filed parliamentary questions on the status of Ghana’s Presidential Jet in June 2021, both the former Ministers of Defence and National Security (Hon. Dominic Nitiwul and Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah) confirmed that the jet was in great condition and was airworthy. The only bizarre concern raised by the former Defence Minister, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, in Parliament was about how President Akufo-Addo could not shower in the presidential jet.

13. The ridiculous attempts to equalise, based on unscrupulous falsehoods in a futile effort at whitewashing President Akufo-Addo — who ought to have remembered his fierce criticism of President Rawlings — are not only insulting but have already failed. The intelligence of Ghanaians should not be underestimated.

14. If the Akufo-Addo administration had listened to some of us much earlier on matters such as this profligate chartered jet travel (which cost taxpayers over GHS120 million), the US$97 million wasted on the cathedral pit, the many inflated single-sourced contracts and the numerous state capture scandals, Ghana could have avoided bankruptcy and the painful financial haircuts we had to suffer.

15. It is instructive and embarrassing to note that none of the leaders of the countries Ghana owes — and is begging for debt restructuring after defaulting under Akufo-Addo’s mismanagement — abandon their presidential jets for luxury charters. Most of these countries actually have a presidential travel policy which demands that taxpayers are reimbursed if their presidents use the presidential jet for non-official or campaign purposes.

16. And by the way, can someone inform the cacophonous, illogical propagandists that there’s a world of difference between jets and helicopters?

17. President Mahama’s government will continue to reset Ghana with truth, modesty, frugality and deep respect for the Ghanaian people.

For God and Country.

Ghana First.

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has dismissed media reports alleging that more than ten of its directors have been asked to stay home while receiving full salaries.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, COCOBOD described such claims as false and misleading, responding directly to allegations made by the former Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, Fiifi Boafo.

Fiifi Boafo, during a recent media interview, alleged that directors had been rendered almost useless and sidelined from active duty since the change of government.

However, COCOBOD insists the claims are baseless.

Management emphasised that no director has been asked to stay home while drawing a salary. The statement further clarified, “No director is on leave except for the former Director of Finance, who had not taken leave for eight years.”

According to COCOBOD, the former Director of Finance is now on leave in accordance with standard administrative procedures, and no other director is on leave.

Accra Hearts of Oak will take on Hearts of Lions in their opening game of the 2025 Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Top Four tournament at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The Phobians are aiming for a strong start as they look to reclaim their status among Ghana’s elite clubs.

Hearts of Oak head into the clash with renewed confidence after reinforcing their squad in the off-season and sharpening their form during preseason. Though they won the Homowo Cup a couple of days ago, their fans will be eager to see how they perform on the big stage.

Hearts of Lions, on the other hand, returned to the Top Four determined to make a statement against one of Ghana’s traditional powerhouses. The Kpando-based side impressed during the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League campaign, and a positive result here could boost their chances of making a run for the title.

US-led mediators ‘appalled’ by humanitarian crisis in war-torn Sudan

People fill containers with water at a distribution point during water outages in Khartoum, Sudan People fill containers with water at a distribution point during water outages in Khartoum, Sudan

United States-led mediators have said they are “appalled” by the continuously deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, where a brutal civil war is raging into its third year, and called for urgent action by the warring parties to protect civilians.

The mediators, known as the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) Group, include the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, among others.

“The ALPS group urgently reiterates that international humanitarian law must be fully respected. This includes the obligations to protect civilians, including humanitarian personnel, their premises and assets, as well as to allow and facilitate rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access to all those in need,” the ALPS Group said in a statement on Wednesday.

The group said it was also appalled by “the growing number of people in situations of severe malnutrition and famine, and by the wide range of access impediments that are delaying or blocking the response in key areas”.

It added that the situation was especially urgent in the North Darfur and Kordofan regions.

“Civilians continue to pay the highest price for this war,” it said.

Sudan has been ravaged by violence and hunger since the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) went to war in April 2023.

The country, in effect, is split in two, with the army controlling the north, east, and centre of Sudan and the RSF dominating nearly all of Darfur and parts of the south.

Nearly 25 million people in Sudan face dire hunger, with millions cut off from lifesaving aid, according to the United Nations.

The UAE has been accused of championing the RSF, including by sending weapons, something it strongly denies.

The plea for Sudan comes as the US faces global criticism for its support of Israel in the genocidal war on Gaza, which is also facing an Israeli-induced famine.

The Hottest Two-Piece Outfits for Every Occasion

Two-piece outfits have become a significant trend in the fashion world, offering a chic and versatile way to express personal style. From casual wear to formal occasions, these outfits can be dressed up or down, making them a must-have for every woman’s wardrobe. With various styles and fabrics to choose from, the latest two-piece outfits are both trendy and functional, allowing for easy mix-and-match while maintaining a polished, fashionable look.

One of the standout trends in two-piece outfits is the co-ord set. Co-ord sets consist of matching tops and bottoms, usually made from the same fabric and print, creating a streamlined and cohesive look. These sets come in a range of designs, from tailored suits to relaxed, casual styles. For warmer months, a crop top paired with high-waisted shorts or a skirt offers a breezy, stylish option. Alternatively, for cooler weather, a long-sleeve crop top or sweater paired with wide-leg trousers or a midi skirt offers a sophisticated, cozy look.

The crop top and pencil skirt combination is another popular two-piece trend. This classic pairing offers a balance of chic and sultry, with the pencil skirt accentuating the body’s curves while the crop top adds a modern, youthful touch. Whether it’s a sleek, fitted crop top with a high-waisted pencil skirt or a more dramatic design featuring ruffles or off-shoulder details, this outfit is perfect for both office wear and evening events.

For a more casual yet trendy look, the two-piece jumpsuit is gaining popularity. These one-piece outfits come with a top and bottom connected, but the style can vary from wide-leg pants to fitted trousers. Paired with a belt or statement accessories, jumpsuits are ideal for those who want an effortlessly stylish look that doesn’t require much coordination.

Printed two-piece outfits have also made their mark, especially those featuring bold patterns like florals, geometric shapes, or animal prints. These fun and vibrant outfits are perfect for summer parties, festivals, and even casual outings. A matching printed blouse and skirt or pants create a striking look that turns heads wherever you go.

Blazer and shorts sets are another trending option for those looking to add a professional yet fashionable touch to their wardrobe. The blazer provides structure and sophistication, while the shorts keep it relaxed and contemporary. This combo is ideal for day-to-night transitions, whether at the office or at a weekend gathering.

In conclusion, trending two-piece outfits are all about versatility and style. From chic co-ord sets to trendy jumpsuits, these outfits offer endless possibilities for creating fashionable, coordinated looks. Whether you’re dressing for a casual day out or a special event, two-piece outfits provide the perfect balance of comfort, style, and sophistication, making them a staple in every modern woman’s wardrobe.

Fan Receives Stadium Ban In Semenyo Racism Probe

0

Antoine Semenyo

A Liverpool fan who was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during the opening match of the Premier League season has been banned from every football stadium in the UK as part of his bail conditions.

The Cherries’ Friday game against Liverpool at Anfield was briefly halted in the 29th minute after Semenyo flagged it up to the referee.

A 47-year-old man from Liverpool, who was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, has been conditionally bailed, Merseyside Police said.

The conditions include a ban on attending any regulated football match in the UK and not going within one mile of a designated football stadium.

The force said the investigation into the incident was ongoing and it was working closely with Liverpool Football Club.

The 25-year-old Ghana international posted on social media that the night at Anfield would stay with him forever “because of how the entire football family stood together”.

He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans and the Premier League officials “who handled it professionally”.

The game resumed four minutes after the reported abuse and Semenyo went on to score twice for Bournemouth, who lost 4-2 to Liverpool.

The Premier League issued a statement, saying it would also be conducting an investigation.

The Football Association added: “Incidents of this nature have no place in our game, and we will work closely with the match officials, the clubs and the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken.”

Parliament calls for increase in sanitation levy to address Ghana’s waste crisis

Parliament has issued a warning urging the govt to take decisive action against sanitation crisis Parliament has issued a warning urging the govt to take decisive action against sanitation crisis

The Sanitation and Water Resources Committee of Parliament has issued a strong warning, urging the government to take decisive action to tackle Ghana’s growing sanitation challenges.

The committee is proposing a significant overhaul of the current funding model by separating the 10-pesewa sanitation levy from the Energy Sector Levy and increasing it to 50 pesewas, as reported by citinewsroom.com on August 20, 2025.

During a press conference on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, John Oti Bless highlighted the urgent need for a reliable and sustainable source of funding to effectively manage waste and improve sanitation across the country.

“I propose that we increase the levy to at least GHp 0.50. This additional revenue can be distributed, with a percentage allocated to the National Youth Employment Agency to help hire more personnel,” he stated.

According to Bless, the Nkwanta North MP and Chairman of the Committee, the lack of a dedicated funding stream is significantly hindering efforts to address the sanitation crisis.

“The amount currently allocated to my district, for instance, is around GH¢200,000, which is inadequate and cannot effectively solve sanitation problems. We need a clear and reliable source of funding,” he explained.

Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are struggling to maintain waste management services, particularly following the cancellation of the YEA-Zoomlion contract.

Tullow Fund Fuels a New Generation of Ghanaian Farmers

0

Tullow
Tullow

Starting a business in Ghana requires a special kind of determination. Entrepreneurs face a familiar set of hurdles, from scarce capital and limited tech to a tough search for skilled workers and reliable markets.

The path is even steeper in regions where opportunity itself feels like a rare commodity. Yet a shift is underway within the nation’s oldest economic pillar, agriculture, where a wave of fresh ambition is meeting targeted investment.

This change is being powered by an unlikely source. Tullow Ghana, better known for its work in oil and gas, is sowing seeds in the agribusiness sector. Its multi-year Tullow Agriventures Programme, or TAP, run with the Innohub Foundation, directly tackles the weak links in the agricultural value chain. The goal is straightforward: provide training, open market doors, and offer crucial financing to those who need it most.

The program’s targets are significant. It aims to launch 600 new agribusinesses, help 30 existing ones expand, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The focus spans from traditional crop and fish farming to innovative agribusiness startups. Last year, hundreds of small enterprises received a blend of funding and hands-on training, and the effects are already rippling through local communities.

Consider a single mother in the Eastern Region. Just a few years ago, keeping her children fed was a daily struggle; school fees were an impossible dream. Today, she manages a thriving soybean farm, her success measured in tuition payments paid on time and profits reinvested into the land. Further east in Aveyime, a young woman who left school early now earns substantial income from her crop farm every six months, a transformation she credits to the support she received.

A cornerstone of TAP is its startup fund. Ten entrepreneurs were selected through a competitive pitch last year, each receiving $10,000 in seed capital to be repaid over time. That number will double to twenty this year. But the money is just one part of the package. Each recipient undergoes months of intensive training in everything from finance to supply chain management, building a foundation for long-term survival.

Is it working? The numbers suggest it is. These small businesses are not just surviving; they are growing and hiring new staff. According to Tullow’s Social Performance Manager, Fiifi Enchill, many have seen profitability soar by an remarkable 188 percent. The funding operates as a revolving model, meaning repayments are pumped directly back into the program to fuel the next round of promising ventures.

For Cynthia Lumor, Tullow Ghana’s Deputy Managing Director, the link between oil and agriculture makes perfect sense. The company believes in the potential of young agribusiness leaders to fuel broader economic growth, she explains. This initiative is a core part of their commitment to building a better future through responsible development.

It is a powerful example of a major corporation investing outside its immediate field to strengthen communities and diversify local economies. In a country like Ghana, this kind of support does more than just create businesses; it addresses two of the nation’s most pressing issues: youth unemployment and food security.

Of course, deep challenges remain. Climate uncertainty and market volatility are constant threats. But the early returns from this initiative show that with the right kind of support, the balance can tip toward success.

Legon Sports Stadium Hosts Top 4 Tournament After Late Change

0

The Legon Sports Stadium

THE LEGON Sports Stadium has been confirmed as the host venue for the upcoming preseason Top 4 tournament featuring some of Ghana’s biggest clubs.

The competition was initially scheduled to be played at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi but later moved to the Accra Sports Stadium after the previous was deemed unfit to host the matches.

But organisers have now settled on the Legon Sports Stadium just a day before the matches, after concerns over availability at other facilities, particularly with the Black Stars set to play their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Mali at the same venue next month.

The competition will bring together last season’s Ghana Premier League champions Bibiani GoldStars, giants Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, as well as Heart of Lions.

Serving as a crucial test ahead of the new campaign, the tournament kicks off today, August 20, with Hearts of Oak taking on Heart of Lions in the opening fixture.

The final has been slated for Sunday, August 24. In addition to the domestic showdown, both Asante Kotoko and Bibiani GoldStars are expected to make full use of the Legon facility as they prepare for their CAF inter-club competitions.

Meanwhile, the Administrative Manager of Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Oduro Nyarko has expressed disappointment in the National Sports Authority (NSA) for the late notice in the change of venue.

“We have been engaging the NSA from the very beginning, and they even gave us an official letter approving the Accra Sports Stadium for the Top 4 games. Out of the blue, my chairman informed me that the Director General of the NSA now says we cannot use the stadium because of the upcoming Black Stars game. Yet, the NSA was fully aware from the onset of Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Mali,” he lamented.

Stakeholders call for increased investment in WASH in healthcare facilities

0

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo

Bolgatanga, Aug. 20, GNA – Stakeholders in public health have called for increased investment in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in healthcare facilities to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery.

The stakeholders, comprising the Ghana Health Service, Civil Society Organisations, and traditional leaders, made the call at a two-day data review meeting on the District Health Information Management Systems (DHIMS), held in Bolgatanga.

DHIMS is a comprehensive health information system used to capture, report, and analyse health data for the healthcare ecosystem in Ghana.

The participants noted that many health facilities, especially at the primary level, still lacked adequate WASH infrastructure such as reliable water supply, safe sanitation systems, and proper hygiene facilities and stressed that the situation undermined effective service delivery and infection prevention.

The workshop formed part of the implementation of the Sexual Health and Reproductive Education (SHARE) project, a five-year initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by a consortium led by Right To Play, with support from WaterAid Ghana, FAWE-Ghana, and FHI360.

The project, which is being rolled out in the Kassena-Nankana and Builsa Municipalities, as well as the Kassena-Nankana West and Bongo Districts, aims to advance gender equality by providing access to age-appropriate sexual and reproductive education and gender-responsive care for young people, especially young women and girls.

It also works to improve access to WASH infrastructure and services in public health facilities, particularly at the Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) compounds and health centres.

Dr Braimah Baba Abubakari, the Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, explained that access to WASH services at facility level was key to ensuring Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), and contributed significantly to improving healthcare, especially for pregnant women and children.

The Regional Director underscored the need for government at both national and local levels, particularly Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), to mainstream WASH infrastructure into the provision and construction of health facilities.

“Without WASH services, it is difficult to improve the quality of healthcare and yet access to WASH services is still a major challenge in most of our health facilities.

It is therefore the responsibility of all of us not just to provide health facilities but also to provide WASH facilities for both staff and clients,” he said.

He commended the SHARE project for improving access to WASH services in some beneficiary facilities and appealed for it to be scaled up to other areas for maximum impact.

Ms Augustina Achigibah, the Programmes Manager in charge of WASH for Public Health at WaterAid Ghana, said under the SHARE project, WaterAid had been working over the past four years to support districts in capturing accurate data into DHIMS to provide evidence for planning.

She added that the project had also provided WASH infrastructure in healthcare facilities, including toilets, incinerators, and adolescent health corners, to help improve access to sexual and reproductive health education among young people.

“We need increased investment to drive WASH in healthcare facilities, so the MMDAs need to support the Ghana Health Service to budget for WASH infrastructure. We also need stakeholders such as the districts and communities, including traditional authorities, to sustain the SHARE project after it ends in 2026,” she added.

Bold leadership is what sets me apart in NPP flagbearer race – Dr Bryan Acheampong

Dr Bryan Acheampong is Member of Parliament for Abetifi Dr Bryan Acheampong is Member of Parliament for Abetifi

Aspiring flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong has asserted that his record of bold decision-making both in public service and the private sector places him ahead of other contenders in the party’s flagbearer race.

Speaking at a training program for campaign coordinators drawn from across the country on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, he underscored the importance of courage and decisive action in leadership, stressing that the NPP needs a leader who is not afraid to take tough but necessary decisions to safeguard the country’s future.

Our self-defence will not be an act of illegality – Nana B

“I have demonstrated time and again that I am a bold leader. My record speaks for itself. Whether in government or in the private sector, I have taken initiatives that many thought were impossible. That is why I say with confidence that my bold leadership sets me apart from other aspirants,” he stated.

He cited his tenure at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, where he championed the cancellation of the cocoa syndication facility. According to him, this bold step helped protect the interests of the Ghanaian farmer and restructured cocoa financing to favour the nation.

He also pointed to the construction of dams in northern Ghana, a policy intervention designed to boost irrigation and ensure year-round farming for communities that had long struggled with drought and food insecurity.

Dr Acheampong further highlighted his achievements in the private sector, particularly his ongoing efforts to construct an airport in Kwahu, which he described as a game-changer for tourism, business, and regional development.

“When I talk about bold leadership, I am not speaking in abstract terms. I am speaking from experience. At Agric, we took bold measures to change systems that were not working. In Kwahu, through private initiative, we are putting up an airport that will transform the local economy. That is the type of leadership the NPP and Ghana need,” he said.

‘What we sow always returns to us’ – NAPO urges fairness and integrity in politics

The Abetifi lawmaker urged his campaign coordinators to carry this message of bold, transformative leadership to the grassroots, noting that the 2026 internal elections would require the NPP to present a leader with a proven record of innovation, resilience, and courage.

He emphasised that the upcoming contest within the NPP is not just about electing a flagbearer but about choosing a winning candidate, someone capable of leading Ghana into the next phase of its development.

“Our party has a tradition of producing leaders who have transformed Ghana at critical moments in history. I am prepared to continue that legacy. What we need is not rhetoric but the courage to make decisions that secure the future of our people,” Dr. Acheampong stressed.

The training programme, which brought together regional campaign coordinators, was aimed at equipping them with the necessary skills and strategies to effectively communicate the campaign’s vision and mobilize support across the

country.

‘Your bias against President Mahama is clear’ – Dafeamekpor slams GBA speaker lineup

GBA President, Efua Ghartey and President John Dramani Mahama GBA President, Efua Ghartey and President John Dramani Mahama

Legal practitioner and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called out the leadership of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) over what he describes as their apparent aversion to President John Dramani Mahama.

In a post on his X page on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the Majority Chief Whip shared a list of speakers scheduled for the GBA’s 2025 annual conference and noted that while the association almost always platformed former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his tenure, the current president of the country did not make the list for this year’s edition.

He accused the association of being biased toward President John Dramani Mahama while challenging the GBA to continue performing the bidding of the opposition New Patriotic Party.

“Your unalloyed bias against JDM and the NDC government is too glaring to be ignored now. You can continue to act as a wing of the main opposition party to do its bidding; we are ready for you,” he stated.

‘Immediately reinstate Chief Justice’ – UK Bar Council, Commonwealth Lawyers ‘orders’ Mahama

The MP drew a contrast between speakers for GBA conferences over the past eight years and the upcoming edition to support his case.

“I saw how the GBA organized its Annual Conference from 2017-2024 in this country. The then Prez, Nana Akufo Addo, was nearly always the Special Guest of Honour & Speaker. That isn’t the case in 2025. The Prez is conspicuously missing from the list of advertised speakers at the confab,” he wrote.

Reacting further to the individuals listed for the 2025 edition, which includes the Chief Justice, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the National President of the GBA, and the President of the Bar Council for England and Wales as the guest speaker, the Majority Chief Whip described the list as curious.

He referenced a joint statement recently issued by the Bar Council of England and Wales demanding the immediate reinstatement of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

47 out of over 5,000 GBA members passed resolution for revocation of CJ’s suspension – Reports

“What’s curious is that the GBA leadership has rather decided to invite the President of the Bar Council of England & Wales, a group that recently attacked this government without any provocation. GBA, kindly add the Prez of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association for effect,” he stated.

The 2025 Ghana Bar Association Annual Conference is scheduled to be held from September 14 to September 19, 2025, in Wa, Upper West.

South African MP opens fire to fend off attack during attempted hijacking

A prominent South African MP fired shots to fend off a violent attack by a gang on him and two of his colleagues in Cape Town.

Ian Cameron – along with two other members of parliament’s police committee, Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell – were returning from a work trip when their vehicle was ambushed in the township of Philippi on Tuesday.

The assailants smashed the car’s windows with bricks, injuring Cameron and Gotsell.

Cameron, whose teeth were broken, retaliated by opening fire, injuring one of the attackers.

Police said two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, have been arrested as they investigate a case of attempted murder and attempted hijacking.

Crime is a major problem in South Africa and the country has one of the highest murder rates in the world.

One of the suspects was apprehended while seeking medical treatment at a hospital on Tuesday, while another was arrested on a farm early Wednesday, police said, adding that a search is underway for a third suspect.

Cameron, who chairs the police committee, told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika that they were returning from an unannounced visit to a police academy in Philippi when “the first brick came through [the window]” on the driver’s side and hit him in the face.

Cameron said that while he was trying to fend off his attacker, he saw his colleagues also face a barrage of attacks from the other assailants.

“I realised that if we don’t do something, then this can go really go bad. So I did my best to act in self-defence with my firearm and then we sped off to the closest secure location,” he added.

In South Africa, it is legal to carry a firearm, so long as you have a licence.

Cameron, who was seen with a cut lip in the interview, said some of his teeth had been broken, while Gotsell had to be briefly hospitalised after he was hit on the head.

Gotsell, speaking after being discharged from hospital, praised Cameron, saying he “acted with such bravery”.

All three MPs are members of the Democratic Alliance (DA), the second-biggest party in South Africa’s coalition government.

The party said the attack showed how “out-of-control” crime is in South Africa.

It’s a sin for a broke man to say he’s in love with me-Onyi Alex

Nigerian actress Onyi Alex has sparked debate after saying it is a sin for a broke man to profess love to her.
She explained that she has worked hard to reach her current level and cannot accept advances from men who are not financially stable.
“I hustle because I don’t wanna be broke so I don’t think any broke man has the right to walk up to me and start declaring undying love for me,” Onyi Alex said.
She added that it is acceptable for a broke man to admire her from afar, but not to seek a relationship.

Betty Mould-Iddrisu tears into Parliament over 32-year failure on spousal property rights

0

Former Attorney-General and Council of State member, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, has launched a scathing attack on Ghana’s Parliament, accusing it of betraying the constitutional promise of equality by failing to pass legislation on spousal property rights more than three decades after it was mandated.

Speaking as chairperson of the 2025 Marriage Governance Conference in Accra, Mould-Iddrisu reminded lawmakers that Article 22 of the 1992 Constitution required Parliament to enact legislation on the property rights of spouses “as soon as practicable” after the Constitution came into force.

GFA Elite Academies To Debut At 2025 U15 Colts Championship

0

History will be made later this month when the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) two Elite U15 Academies take part in the national Elite U15 Boys Colts Championship for the first time. The competition runs from August 25 to 31, 2025, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

The academies, established as part of the GFA’s long-term vision for youth football development, combine formal education with structured football training. The Kumasi-based academy operates from Prempeh College, while the Bolgatanga academy in the Upper East Region is based at Bolgatanga Senior High School.

Their participation alongside teams from Ghana’s 10 football regions is being hailed as a major milestone, offering the academies’ young talents the chance to test themselves against the best colts players nationwide.

It also reflects the GFA’s strategic commitment to creating a sustainable pipeline for future national teams.

The Volta Region, winners of the inaugural edition in 2024, and last year’s runners-up Ashanti Region, will face fresh competition with the introduction of the academies, setting the stage for a more competitive and unpredictable tournament.

This year’s edition promises not only regional bragging rights but also an important showcase of the GFA’s grassroots development model, which continues to shape Ghana’s football future.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has assured Ghanaians of the Service’s readiness to maintain peace and order during the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Addressing the media at the High-Risk Operations Training Centre at Akyerematen in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, he explained that the officers have undergone training to enhance their preparedness for the by-election.

NDC expresses confidence in state security ahead of Akwatia by-election

Ghana’s Exporters Set to Gain as Producer Inflation Cools

0

Producer Price Inflation
Producer Price Inflation

Ghana’s export sector may be about to catch a favorable wind. New data shows producer price inflation slowed significantly in July, dropping to 18.6 percent from 24.2 percent the previous month.

This easing cost pressure could make key exports like gold, processed cocoa, and aluminum more competitive abroad.

The decline was led by cooling costs in mining and manufacturing, which together account for the vast majority of the country’s exports. With input prices rising more slowly, producers might soon be able to offer their goods at more attractive prices, just as Ghana works to expand its trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

This trend aligns with other positive economic signals, including a steadier currency and falling consumer inflation. For exporters, it could be the nudge needed to scale up production and attract new investment into local processing.

There is a catch, though. Utility costs remain stubbornly high, which may limit gains for energy-heavy industries like steel and cement. Still, for many, the slowing producer inflation offers a tangible boost—and a chance to strengthen Ghana’s position as a growing export hub for a continent-sized market.

Man, 20, Stabbed In Clash At Ayinamso I

0

A 20-year-old man is battling for his life after he was stabbed during a violent confrontation at Ayinamso I in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The victim, identified as Dennis Kwaku Fosu, sustained a deep cut at the back of his neck after a scuffle broke out between some youth from Mpasatia Beposo and residents of Ayinamso I on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at about 10:00 a.m.

According to eyewitness accounts, the fracas was a continuation of a disagreement that had occurred the previous day when a group of young men on motorbikes from Mpasatia visited the community. Efforts to resolve the misunderstanding escalated into a heated exchange, resulting in the stabbing of two individuals.

Eyewitnesses further alleged that the young men later called for reinforcements from Serebuoso, a neighbouring community, who also joined the fight.

“Members of both groups are known to use charms that allegedly prevent cutlass or knife wound from penetrating their bodies. Unfortunately, the victim’s charm failed him, leading to the deep cut he sustained,” an eyewitness narrated.

Fosu was rushed to the Frimpong Medical Centre at Toase, where he received emergency attention. When DAILY GUIDE visited his family house, he had been discharged from the hospital but was seen with a large plaster on his neck.

Recounting the incident, the victim said he accompanied his friends to Ayinamso I without knowing they were going there to engage in a fight. Asked if he could identify the person who stabbed him, he explained that he was attacked from behind and therefore could not recognise the assailant.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicated that the prime suspect fled the scene after committing the crime when some residents attempted to apprehend him.

Police in the district have since commenced investigations into the incident. As of press time, no arrests had been made.

Meanwhile, the victim’s father, Kwaku Badu, has appealed to the Ghana Police Service to expedite investigations to ensure that those responsible are arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law. He also called on the public to assist the police in bringing the perpetrators to book.

Africa must unite to facilitate economic growth – Jacob Zuma

0

A former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has urged countries on the continent to come together to chart a sustainable path to development and prosperity for their citizens.

“I do not think there is a continent that has suffered more than Africa; the time has come for Africa to stand on its own,” he said.

The former President was delivering a lecture at the 2025 University of Professional Studies (UPSA) Accra annual leadership lecture series in Accra yesterday, on the theme: “The geopolitics and geo-economics of de-dollarisation: BRICS currency strategy, lessons for Africa’s common currency and beyond.”

Present at the event were Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, among others.

The lecture series was established in 2017, to provide a platform for national and global discussions on challenges and issues that cut across humanity.

Some notable personalities who have delivered the lecture in the past were Former President Kufuor, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Cardinal Peter Kwodwo Turkson, Kwame Pianim and Lord Boateng.

Integration

Mr Zuma further said that there must be economic and political integration of Africa to facilitate growth.

He said the continent should resist any form of neo colonialism and outside influences which constantly sought to pitch countries against each other and people against themselves as a means to exploit resources.

“The problem is that our enemies know how to buy our own people and make them protect their interest.  We must, therefore, stand together and prevent influences that make us to start wars, making us fight one other and become enemies so that in such divisions, we can be exploited.” the former President added.

He lauded Ghana for the critical role the country played in the liberation struggle against colonialism, adding “Dr Kwame Nkrumah was an honest man who wanted the best for this continent.

Challenges

Mr Zuma acknowledged the difficulties African countries faced in trading and doing business among themselves, which he largely attributed to an economic model designed during the colonial era.

He said the current world economic order had not also taken into consideration the peculiar needs of African countries despite the enormous natural resources on the continent being unfairly harness by the rest of the world.

The former President, therefore, called on African countries to be resolute, integrate their economics and pursue policies that would move people out of poverty.

He encouraged them not to shy away from joining economic groupings such as BRICS to help shape their economies.

Mr Zuma recounted how he was instrumental in the formation of BRICS and the challenges he and the other leaders who formed the group faced, including attempts to undermine their leadership and countries.

“BRICS is the future for Africa. It is a critical system in changing the economic fortunes of developing countries. We have modelled our economies to serve other countries, but we have not had any substantial benefit. It is time to look elsewhere,” he added.

Significance

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, described the lecture as a critical platform to help shape national and global discourse to address some of the challenges facing the nation and the world at large.

The Chancellor of UPSA, Dr KK Sarpong, also said that Africans must learn to take their destinies into their own hands and not become spectators.

“We must be architects of our own destiny and become a continent that trade on its own terms, supported by robust institutions, with a common resolve,” he said.

Incumbency Advantage & Incumbency Disadvantage in Ghanaian Politics:Exposing the LIES

0

Razak Kojo Opoku
Razak Kojo Opoku

Recently, the discussion of the electoral performance of NPP in 2024 has been shifted to the theories of Incumbency Advantage, and Incumbency Disadvantage. That is a very good discussion and it is important that we expose the LIES which some people have been spinning to whitewash data in favour of their preferred Presidential candidate.

Incumbency Advantage Theory And Its Impact On Ghana Elections

Incumbency Advantage typically refers to the benefits that a Presidential candidate of a ruling party has over opposition Presidential candidates when seeking re-election, especially after completing the first term in government.

Some of the benefits of Incumbency Advantage, especially within the first term in government are access to resources, well established donor & sponsor networks, goodwill of the citizens (voters), and greater tolerance & patience levels of the citizens (voters). These aforementioned factors greatly influence the voting patterns, behaviors, and decisions of the voters in favour of the Presidential candidate who is already in government. Incumbent Presidential candidate typically win re-election at much higher rate than opposition Presidential candidates, especially after the end of the 4 year mandate.

J. J. Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Mahama, and Nana Akufo-Addo enjoyed an Incumbency Advantage Theory under the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. However, let analyze their respective performance in accordance with the Incumbency Advantage Theory:

Jerry John Rawlings in 1996
After overwhelmingly winning the 1992 Presidential election with 2, 323, 135 votes, and Parliamentary Seats of 189 out of 200 Seats, largely due to the poor decision by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to boycott the 1992 Parliamentary election, J. J. Rawlings with an incumbent advantage decisively won the 1996 Presidential election with 4, 099, 758 votes, and Parliamentary seats of 134 out of 200 seats.

John Agyekum Kufuor in 2004
After the overwhelming victory in 2000 Presidential election with 3, 631, 263 votes, and Parliamentary Seats of 99 out of 200 seats, John Agyekum Kufuor with an incumbent advantage won the 2004 Presidential election with 4, 524, 074 votes, and Parliamentary seats of 128 out of 230 seats.

John Atta Mills/John Mahama in 2012
After narrowly winning the 2008 Presidential election with votes difference of 40, 586 between him and Nana Akufo-Addo, and Parliamentary seats of 116 out of 230, John Atta Mills unfortunately died on 24th July, 2012.

Due to the unfortunate death of John Atta Mills, John Mahama with an Incumbent Advantage contested the 2012 Presidential election and won with 5, 574, 761 votes, and Parliamentary seats 148 out of 275 Seats.

Nana Akufo-Addo in 2020
After overwhelmingly winning the 2016 Presidential election with 5, 755, 758 votes, and Parliamentary seats of 169 out of 275 seats, Nana Akufo-Addo with an Incumbent Advantage won the 2020 Presidential election with 6, 730, 587 votes, and Parliamentary seats of 137 out of 275 seats. The Parliamentary performance of Akufo-Addo in 2020 was poor compared to the 2016 Parliamentary seats he won decisively.

Incumbency Disadvantage Theory And Its Impact On Ghana Elections

Incumbency Disadvantage is typically whereby an incumbent Presidential candidate faces significant difficulties/challenges to win re-election after 8 years in government, especially if the incumbent Presidential candidate is not the sitting President at the time of the general election.

Some of the factors underpinning Incumbency Disadvantage Theory are poorer economic conditions, structural shift in internal party competition, greediness of government appointees, voter’s apathy, failed promises, entrenchment mentality of the Candidate and people within his kitchen cabinet, voter’s impatience, reported cases of corruption, the trustworthy & acceptability of the Presidential candidate, and other factors not mentioned here.

John Atta Mills, Nana Akufo-Addo, John Mahama, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia suffered defeats in respective general elections largely to the Incumbency Disadvantage Theory, however, let’s analyze the magnitude of the defeats in accordance with Incumbency Disadvantage Theory:

John Atta Mills in 2000

John Atta Mills first entry into partisan politics was in 1996 when he was nominated by J. J. Rawlings as his Vice-President.

John Atta Mills first attempt at the Presidency was in 2000 general election and despite Incumbency Disadvantage of being in power for 8 years + 11years of his boss Rawlings’ PNDC regime, John Atta Mills successfully pushed the 2000 presidential election to a run-off (second round) with presidential votes of 2, 750, 124, and Parliamentary seats of 92 out of 200 seats while NPP had 99 out of 200 seats.

NPP won the 2000 Parliamentary elections with only 7 seats difference between them and NDC.

John Atta Mills lost to John Agyekum Kufuor after second round in 2000 general elections with votes difference of 881, 139 between him and John Agyekum Kufuor.

John Atta Mills lost the 2000 Presidential and Parliamentary elections with Dignity & Respectable Performance.

John Atta Mills was the first Ghanaian sitting Vice-President under the 1992 Constitution to have contested a national presidential election influenced by Incumbency Disadvantage Theory since his party has been in government for 8 years.

Nana Akufo-Addo in 2008

Regardless of the symptoms of Incumbency Disadvantage Theory, the performance of Nana Akufo-Addo in 2008 general election is the BEST performance witnessed under the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

Nana Akufo-Addo wasn’t a sitting Vice-President yet delivered one of the outstanding election results under the conditions of Incumbency Disadvantage Theory(NPP being in government for 8years).

Nana Akufo-Addo lost the 2008 Presidential election to John Atta Mills with 40, 586 votes difference between him and John Atta Mills.

Nana Akufo-Addo lost the 2008 Presidential election after Run-Off (second round) with Tain eventually deciding the winner of the 2008 Presidential election.

Nana Akufo-Addo equally won 107 Parliamentary Seats out of 230 Seats for the NPP while the NDC had 116 Parliamentary seats out of 230 seats. The difference between NDC and NPP in terms of Parliamentary seats after the 2008 general election was 9 Seats.

John Mahama in 2016

The 2016 general was a great political dilemma for the ruling NDC because the party itself has been in government for 8 years suffering under Incumbency Disadvantage Theory yet John Mahama, the NDC 2016 Presidential candidate has been in office as an elected President for 4years who he was to benefit from Incumbency Advantage Theory.

However, the Incumbency Disadvantage Theory (8years of a ruling party) worked against John in the 2016 general election.

John Mahama terribly lost the 2016 general election to Nana Akufo-Addo with votes difference of 984, 570 between him and Nana Akufo-Addo.

John Mahama won 106 Parliamentary seats out of 275 seats for the NDC while Nana Akufo-Addo secured 169 Parliamentary seats for the NPP.

The difference between NPP and NDC in terms of Parliamentary seats after the 2016 general election was 63 seats.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2024

The expectations for breaking the 8 year cycle was extremely high and hopeful among the supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) largely because there was a firm believe that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will always be preferred to John Mahama as far as voters’ preferences were concerned. However, Incumbency Disadvantage Theory (8 years of a ruling party) worked against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was the second sitting Vice-President to have contested national presidential election under the 1992 Constitution influenced by Incumbency Disadvantage Theory.

The only difference between John Atta Mills and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was that, at the time of the general elections, John Atta Mills has been a Vice-President for 4 years ahead of 2000 general election, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been a Running-Mate for 8years and Vice-President for 8 years ahead of 2024 general election.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election to John Mahama with 1, 714, 179 (275 out of 276 declared Constituencies). Losing an election with almost 2 Million Votes is a very serious historic crisis that the members of NPP shouldn’t consider such performance as normal, whitewashing the data with unintelligent analysis of New-Old Candidate Assumptions Model, and Incumbency Advantage Theory -Incumbency Disadvantage Theory.

2024 was the first time a ruling party has been defeated with such magnitude. John Atta Mills lost the 2000 after second, Nana Akufo-Addo lost the 2008 after second round & Tain declaration, and John Mahama lost the 2016 with 984, 570 votes yet with 106 Parliamentary seats out of 275.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia after the 2024 Parliamentary election won 88 seats out of 276 seats while John Mahama won 183 seats out of 276 seats.

The difference between NDC and NPP in terms of Parliamentary seats after the 2024 general election was overwhelmingly 95 seats.

Therefore, some of the people relying on Incumbency Advantage Theory-Incumbency Disadvantage Theory as well as New-Old Candidate Assumptions Model should understand that, DATA & FACTS doesn’t support such lying analysis.

Ugandan official denies reports that it will take US deportees

A senior Ugandan official has denied media reports saying that the country had agreed to take in people deported from the United States, saying it lacked the facilities to accommodate them.

Citing internal US government documents, CBS News reported on Tuesday that Washington had reached deportation deals with Uganda and Honduras as part of its drive to step up expulsions of migrants to countries where they do not have citizenship.

“To the best of my knowledge, we have not reached such an agreement,” the minister told Anadolu.

“We do not have the capacity to accommodate such foreign deportees from the United States in Uganda,” he added.

US President Donald Trump aims to deport millions of immigrants who the administration says have entered the US illegally, and sought to increase removals to third countries.

The CBS report said the agreements with Uganda and Honduras were based on a provision of US immigration law that allows people seeking asylum to be rerouted to third countries if the US government determines those nations can fairly hear their claims.

So far, at least three African countries – South Sudan, Rwanda, and Eswatini – have agreed to accept migrants deported from the US.

Last month, the US sent 13 deportees it described as dangerous criminals who were in the US illegally to South Sudan and Eswatini.

Human rights activists have condemned the policy, saying migrants face the risk of being sent to countries where they could be harmed.

I didn’t sample the guitar in ‘Brother Brother’ – Bisa KDei responds to Prof John Collins

0

Bisa Kdei

Ghanaian highlife artiste Bisa KDei has refuted claims by ethnomusicologist Professor John Collins that he sampled the guitar work in his hit song , released in 2015.

Prof Collins, a respected scholar of African popular music and a key figure in documenting and promoting Ghanaian highlife, had suggested in an interview that Bisa KDei may have copied the highlife guitar pattern of from an old record.

“What Bisa KDei did in was that he picked the typical guitar band sample. I don’t even know which band he got this from, but it was very distinctive. He didn’t get a guitarist to play it. He just looped it and used it occasionally,” he claimed.

Reacting to the comment, Bisa KDei took to his Instagram story to stress that he never samples in his work and played the guitars himself.

“The fact that I got it so perfect doesn’t mean I copied it. I never sample. None of my songs is sampled because I understand originality very well. I also produce and play the guitar. The guitars in and I played myself, and I understand highlife, so I play according to flow. Someone should tell the professor to do proper research next time. lol,” he wrote.

Don’t politicise Ridge Hospital assault – Health Committee Chair warns Minority

0

The Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee and Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has condemned attempts to politicise the recent assault on healthcare workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge.

His comments follow claims by the Minority in Parliament that the perpetrators of the attack, captured in a viral video, were aligned with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The video showed relatives of an accident victim clashing with emergency staff over alleged delays in treatment. The confrontation escalated into the alleged assault of a nurse by social media activist Ralph St. William, prompting hospital authorities to call in the police.

In the aftermath, the Minister of Health visited the facility, condemned the incident, and pledged tighter security measures.

However, the Minister drew public criticism when he was later seen shaking hands with the alleged perpetrator.

While acknowledging the Minority’s condemnation of the attack, Dr. Nawaane said linking the suspects to the NDC was “very unfortunate.”

“They are saying that the perpetrators are individuals aligned with or have a sympathetic relation with the NDC. I thought that given what happened, we would unite as a nation and condemn it. Yet, they are trying to say that these are people aligned with the NDC. That is very unfortunate,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday, August 20, 2026.

He stressed that the government had already taken decisive action, pointing out that the Minister himself condemned the act and commissioned a probe into the incident.

“Inasmuch as it is an unfortunate situation, I want to call on the medical staff that the Health Committee of Parliament is with them in this trying moment. We are going to ensure that the case is investigated, and we are also going to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” Dr. Nawaane assured.

Producer Price Inflation drops sharply to 3.8% in July 2025

Ghana’s Producer Price Inflation (PPI) fell sharply in July 2025 Ghana’s Producer Price Inflation (PPI) fell sharply in July 2025

Ghana’s Producer Price Inflation (PPI) fell sharply in July 2025, dropping to 3.8% from 5.8% in June 2025, according to the latest data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

This marks the sixth consecutive monthly decline in producer inflation and signals a cooling of price pressures at the factory gate.

The GSS data showed that producer prices rose by 1.6% between June and July 2025, meaning that, on average, the prices received by producers for their goods and services increased by 1.6% in July compared to June.

The mining and quarrying sector, Ghana’s largest with a weight of 43.7%, saw inflation fall by 1.9 percentage points, from 6.5% in June to 4.6% in July 2025.

Inflation declines further to 12.1% in July 2025

Manufacturing, which accounts for 35% of the PPI, eased from 7.2% to 3.6%, shedding 3.6 percentage points.

The decline in producer inflation could provide a potential boost to the broader economy.

According to the Statistical Service, reduced input costs for producers could eventually translate into lower consumer prices if the reductions are passed along the supply chain.

Dev’t Authorities operating as if they’re autonomous, they were “over pampered”- Alhaji Dr Abubakar Wayoe

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, Aug. 20, GNA – The Coastal, Middlebelt, and Northern Development Authorities in Ghana have been operating with significant autonomy, lacking budgetary control oversight from the Office of Government Machinery (OGM).

Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Wayoe, Acting Chief Director of the Office of the President made this known when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) public hearing in Accra on Wednesday.

“The Development Authorities were operating as if they’re autonomous. The Office of Government Machinery (OGM) did not have control over their budgets even though they are under the OGM. The Ministry of Finance handles their budgets and financial issues. They were over pampered,” Alhaji Dr Abubakar Wayoe stated.

This autonomy has led to financial infractions key issues include unearned salaries, unaccounted payment vouchers and lack of budgetary control.

The Development Authorities were described as being “over pampered,” suggesting inadequate oversight and accountability.

Members of PAC underscored the need for public officials given mandate to discharge their duties responsibly, instead of lamenting over existing problems.

Madam Abena Osei Asare, the Chairperson of PAC and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, urged public servants given mandate to be firm, without fear or favour in order to promote financial propriety and accountability at the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

Mr Cletus Seidu Dapilah, a member of PAC and Member of Parliament for Jirapa, urged political appointees to give “free hand to public servants to work” to ensure accountability and transparency in the use of public funds.

The 2024 Auditor-General’s Report has recorded various financial irregularities in Ghana’s public sector including GH¢4.6 billion cash irregularities involving public boards and statutory institutions.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) accounting for a substantial portion about GH¢67 Billion Payables.

The report found that almost 50% of Ghana’s GH¢67 billion payables for 2024 were potentially invalid, raising concerns about accountability and fiscal discipline.

The Auditor-General also reported an overstatement of Ghana’s public debt by GH¢138.91 billion, highlighting weaknesses in financial reporting and asset management.

These issues underscore the need for improved oversight, transparency, and accountability in Ghana’s public financial management.

Fair Trade NGO Commends COPEC

0

Duncan Amoah

The Centre for Fair Trade and Transparency (CFTT) has lauded the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Mr. Duncan Amoah, for his bold and principled stand against the proposed 20% increase in public transport fares.

In a statement issued in Accra, the Centre praised Mr. Amoah and his organisation for stepping in to defend the Ghanaian commuter at a time when such a move by transport operators threatened to worsen the already difficult economic conditions faced by ordinary citizens.

According to the CFTT, Mr. Amoah’s rejection of the proposed fare increase was both justified and timely. COPEC had argued that the hike was premature and lacked a sound economic basis, pointing out that current fuel prices are still lower than they were earlier in the year, making claims of fuel cost escalation untenable. The Centre further noted COPEC’s dismissal of the road toll argument used by the Ghana Road Coordinating Council (GRCC) proponents of the fare hike, describing it as an invalid justification since the proposed tolls have not yet been enforced.

The CFTT also highlighted COPEC’s revelation that there had been inadequate consultation on the matter by GRCC, with other major transport unions reportedly not in agreement with the fare increase. Furthermore, COPEC has made it clear that it is closely monitoring developments and is prepared to take legal action should the proposed hike be implemented, a move the Centre described as “a strong show of commitment to protecting the rights of Ghanaian commuters.”

“At a time when the Ghanaian consumer was left at the mercy of transport owners, COPEC’s intervention has brought hope, fairness, and reason into the discussion,” the statement read.

The Centre commended COPEC’s emphasis on evidence-based advocacy and consumer protection, describing Mr. Amoah’s stance as both bold and necessary in ensuring that transport pricing decisions are fair, transparent, and backed by broad stakeholder consensus.

Reiterating its own mission, the CFTT promised to continue advocating for the rights of ordinary Ghanaians, supporting all initiatives that ensure fair pricing, transparent decision-making, and proper consultation before any changes that directly affect the public are implemented.

We see Mr. Amoah’s stance not just as a protest against unfair increases, but as a reminder that policy and pricing decisions must be grounded in truth, fairness, and the protection of the vulnerable,” the statement added.

The Centre for Fair Trade & Transparency is a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting consumer rights, promoting price transparency, and advocating for fair, ethical, and accountable market practices in Ghana.

NPA urges public to secure LPG cylinders during transport

0

Accra, Aug. 20, GNA- The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has cautioned the public to transport filled Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders in a secure and upright position.

This, the Authority explained, helped prevent over-pressurisation that could damage the pressure relief valve, that potentially could cause gas leaks or explosions.

“Consumers of petroleum products, especially LPG, must prioritise safety,” said Mrs Eunice Budu-Nyarko, Head of Consumer Services at the NPA, during an LPG safety campaign at some tertiary institutions in the Upper West Region.

“Ignoring safety measures could result in fire outbreaks at homes and workplaces, leading to loss of lives, injuries, and damage to property,” she added.

She advised the public to transport cylinders in a stable, upright position to minimise risk.

Responding to a question on fuel dispensing errors at filling stations, Mrs. Budu-Nyarko urged motorists to confirm the type of fuel being dispensed and take note of the colour-coded nozzles: red for petrol (Super), black for diesel, and green for high-octane (RON 95).

Mr. Abraham Dauda, NPA’s Upper West Regional Supervisor for Inspections and Monitoring, cautioned students against using mobile phones while cooking and encouraged strict adherence to safety protocols.

Prof. Hamidatu Saaka Darimani, Vice-Chancellor of Dr Hilla Liman Technical University, called for the adoption of Burkina Faso’s model, where cylinders are purchased only from licensed outlets.

She noted that this would protect consumers from substandard or repainted cylinders.

Commending the NPA’s awareness efforts, Prof Darimani noted that safety went beyond fire prevention; it required a deeper understanding of the risks posed by negligence.

Dr Hilla Liman Technical University and Nusrat Jahan Ahmadiyya College of Education were among the first institutions to benefit from the sensitisation campaign.

Ghana currently pays the highest farmgate prices in West Africa

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has refuted reports suggesting that Ghanaian cocoa farmers earn less than their counterparts in Côte d’Ivoire, insisting that Ghana currently pays the highest farmgate price in West Africa.

In a statement released on August 20, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, COCOBOD said official figures confirm that Ghanaian farmers are significantly better off.

Currently, Ghana’s producer price stands at GH¢3,228.75 per 64kg bag, equivalent to GH¢51,660 per tonne or US$5,040 per metric tonne (MT).

Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative welcomes Ghana’s cocoa price hike

In contrast, Côte d’Ivoire pays GH¢2,553.38 per bag, or GH¢40,854 per tonne (US$3,886/MT).

According to the August 2025 Commodity Analysis Team report, Ghanaian farmers are earning:

• GH¢675.38 (US$64.16) more per bag

• GH¢10,806 (US$1,154) more per tonne

Breakdown of comparisons

• Per Kilogramme: Ghana – GH¢51.65 (US$5.04) | Côte d’Ivoire – GH¢40.85 (US$3.89)

• Per 64kg Bag: Ghana – US$315 | Côte d’Ivoire – US$227

• Per Tonne: Ghana – US$5,040 | Côte d’Ivoire – US$3,886

COCOBOD stressed that claims of parity or disadvantage are “factually inaccurate and misleading.”

It explained that Ghana’s pricing strategy not only ensures fair returns for farmers but also shields them from currency volatility and reduces the incentive for smuggling across the Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire border.

“This pricing policy reflects COCOBOD’s unwavering commitment to ensuring fair and rewarding returns for farmers’ hard work,” the statement said.

The Board added that Ghana’s leadership in the global cocoa industry is reinforced by sustainable prices and uncompromised quality.

Government sticks to syndicated loans as cocoa producer price jumps by 62%

“Ghana’s cocoa remains the global benchmark for quality, and now, backed by the highest farmgate price in West Africa, it also guarantees better livelihoods for our farmers,” it concluded.
