Amnesty does not provide an incentive for indiscipline – Dr Osae-Kwapong

0

Fellow at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr John Osae-Kwapong, has said the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to grant amnesty to its suspended members should not be interpreted as a license for indiscipline within the party.

Speaking on JoyNewsAM Show on Monday, August 18, Dr Osae-Kwapong explained that while the decision may be driven by the party’s current challenges, it should not create the impression that misconduct will always be excused.

“I am not sure amnesty provides an incentive for people to be undisciplined. Probably, the party has sat down and realised that based upon the exigencies of the time and whatever it is that they are confronting, you would notice that one of the things that the party has been regularly harping on since their 2024 defeat is party unity,” he explained.

He noted that unity cannot be achieved by amnesty alone but acknowledged it may form part of the NPP’s efforts to reposition itself for the future.

“It takes a lot more than just amnesty to forge party unity and reposition for the next election. But I am sure in their calculus, these are some of the steps they can take to forge party unity and therefore the reason why they are offering this amnesty,” he explained.

Dr Osae-Kwapong, however, cautioned that the party must ensure the decision does not send the wrong signal to its members.

“I am not sure others should see this as, or interpret this as, ‘I can do anything in the party because, at some point, the party, because they prize unity over everything else, would grant me an amnesty.’ I hope that doesn’t become the unintended consequence of this,” he warned.

Ras Mubarak, others begin 163-day road tour across 39 African Nations – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Trans Africa Tourism and Campaign, led by former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, has embarked on an ambitious journey across 39 African countries to advocate for a visa-free continent by 2030.

The campaign, which covers a distance of 40,000 kilometres over 163 days, officially began on Monday, August 18, with its first stop in Lomé, Togo.

Chief of Staff, Julius Deborah, who addressed the media in Accra ahead of the departure, commended the initiative and urged participants to remain vigilant throughout their journey.

He stressed that while the campaign is a noble effort to unite Africa through tourism and integration, security must remain a top priority.

“I just drew their attention that security is the most important thing because there are bad people all over the world. As much as possible, they should spend the night within towns. Usually, when you spend too much time in the bush, it is risky,” he cautioned.

He further advised the team to adequately prepare for logistical challenges, ensuring they have spare tyres, medical supplies, and other essentials to prevent unnecessary delays.

“I have also prompted them to pay attention to their logistical needs. Make sure you have your spare tyres, jack, medication and others so that if something slows you down, you can change and move on.”

The campaign is designed not only to advocate for visa-free travel across the continent, but also to engage directly with African leaders and citizens. Along the route, the team will present letters to Heads of Government, urging them to implement policies that support free movement.

They will also host press conferences, cultural showcases, and stakeholder dialogues to highlight the economic and social benefits of an integrated Africa.

Campaign Leader, Ras Mubarak, emphasised that beyond visa-free travel, the initiative also pushes for a single African currency and a borderless continent.

According to him, such steps will significantly strengthen Africa’s economic prospects.

“This journey is going to take us 163 days, approximately 600 hours of driving or 40,000 kilometers on the road. We will meet with African Heads of Government and address the press in every country we pass through.

“Our goal is to urge African leaders to adopt one currency, work toward a borderless Africa, and appreciate the enormous impact this will have on our people,” he said.

Military officer’s wife begins attempt to break the GWR for Longest Marathon Reading Aloud

Some officers of the Ghana Armed Forces on August 18, 2025, stormed the premises of the National Children’s Library at Airport to support the wife of a soldier who is attempting to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the Longest Marathon Reading Aloud (Read-A-Thon).

The officers, mostly dressed in mufti, were seen dancing and singing in solidarity with the GWR contender, Morkporkpor Fiador.

The 240-hour non-stop reading attempt by Fiador, a Ghanaian teacher with the Field Engineer ‘A’ Unit of the 5 Garrison Education Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces, began at 6:00 p.m. on August 18, 2025.

The event, which was initially scheduled for December 26, 2024, but postponed due to funding challenges, was rescheduled and officially commenced on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the Children’s Library in Accra.

Fiador received official approval from Guinness World Records to pursue the record attempt.

According to an email from GWR, her application was accepted under the title “Longest Marathon Reading Aloud” with strict guidelines provided to ensure the legitimacy of the attempt.

GWR: Ghanaian teacher to attempt 240-hour Read-A-Thon

“Each point of the guidelines must be followed by anyone attempting this record. You must ensure that everyone involved in your record attempt, including participants, stewards, and witnesses, are familiar with the guidelines,” GWR emphasized in its correspondence.

The record, which requires participants to read continuously for days, will see Fiador attempt a staggering 240 hours of non-stop reading.

Fiador, who has previously taught at Apam Presby and 5BN Basic School, is widely admired for her passion for education and her commitment to inspiring young learners.

End ‘galamsey’ now – Presby Moderator charges stakeholders

0

Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has renewed its call for urgent national action against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, following the tragic helicopter crash that killed eight officials on August 6, 2025.

Speaking at the 25th General Assembly meeting at Kwahu Nkwatia, the Moderator of the PCG, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, described the crash as a “solemn reminder of the urgent need for decisive and lasting measures to combat the illegal mining menace.”

The moderator noted that the helicopter crash, which occurred in the Ashanti Region, underscores the severe risks posed by galamsey, which he described as a “significant national security threat”.

The church’s leadership expressed alarm over signs of increasing galamsey activity, despite recent government interventions.

Rev. Dr. Kwakye specifically highlighted the “release of excavators” and the “visible environmental devastation in several areas”.

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana pledged to “liaise with other religious bodies in our resistance to galamsey” and called on the government, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to address this “environmental injustice” with urgency.

Beyond the environmental impact, the moderator warned of a “troubling rise in school dropouts related to mining work”.

He cited a shocking statistic, noting that “only 35% of teenagers in mining communities are enrolled in schools.”

This alarming trend, Rev. Dr. Kwakye stated, requires urgent national action to reverse.

The church’s message emphasised that the fight against galamsey is not just about protecting Ghana’s forests, rivers, and underwater bodies but also about safeguarding the future of the nation’s youth.

Deputy Chief of Staff, Old Tafo MP engage in ‘dirty’ fight on social media over Mahama’s foreign trip

0

Deputy Chief of Staff, Stan Xoeso Dogbe and MP for Old Tafo, Ekow Vincent Assfuah Deputy Chief of Staff, Stan Xoeso Dogbe and MP for Old Tafo, Ekow Vincent Assfuah

A Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Stan Xoese Dogbe, and the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, are engaged in a heated exchange of words on social media over President John Dramani Mahama’s foreign trip.

The controversy between the Deputy Chief of Staff and the MP stemmed from a post by Vincent Assafuah alluding to a supposed private jet that had departed Ghana at 7 AM on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The post alluded to a flight itinerary of Japan, Singapore, Germany, and back to Ghana at an estimated cost of $690,000.

“This private jet, M-BAEP, left Accra this morning around 7 am. It is estimated to cost $15,000 per hour to rent this flight. A simple calculation shows that the 7-hour journey already covered amounts to a tune of $105,000. If the flight proceeds to Japan, which is likely to take about 12 hours, that would be another $180,000.

“If it then continues to Singapore, approximately 7 hours away, that would add another $105,000. Finally, if the jet flies directly to Germany and then back to Accra a total of about 20 hours return trip that would add another $300,000. Altogether, the cost comes to an incredible $690,000 without including waiting times and/or stopovers. Damnnnnnn!” the MP wrote.

Ghana’s presidential jet stuck in France amid major faults, corrosion discovered – Report

Coming at a time when the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, had announced a similar flight itinerary for President John Dramani Mahama, the Deputy Chief of Staff, in a response to the Tafo MP, sought to accuse the MP of being mischievous; while seeking to criticise the president’s trip.

He clarified that while the MP had suggested that the president departed the country on a private jet at 7 AM on Sunday, President Mahama was still in the country as of midday and only left Ghana after some engagements.

“This one here will also demand to be called ‘Honourable’! Even if you are not street smart. It doesn’t take that much brain work to avoid embarrassing yourself, or? The president was live on many TV networks between 10.30 AM and 12.45 PM, attending the thanksgiving mass of the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah at the Christ the King Parish. Did he take off in the supposed jet at 7.00 AM and fly back for the 10.30 AM mass? I guess we have to ask his classmates how smart this guy was in his lower school days because… Eish! This is not how to be relevant oooh! Vincent Ekow Assafuah, invest in reading and how to be politically relevant and stop disgracing MPs,” Stan Dogbey wrote.

In an earlier post, he had disclosed that the president, contrary to some speculations, departed Ghana on board a commercial flight.

“President John Dramani Mahama is on his way to Japan on board a commercial airline from Accra’s Kotoka International Airport. There are right-thinking Ghanaians on board with him.

We’re expecting your resignation – Rev Ntim Fordjour chides Ablakwa over Mahama’s latest foreign travel

“If the president’s trip requires a privately chartered aircraft and not his brother’s Dzata, which has saved the state huge sums of money, be sure that we will go for that, but not at an exorbitant cost to the state,” portions of the post read.

But in a rebuttal to the Deputy Chief of Staff’s claim, Ekow Assafuah pointed out that his earlier post did not mention specific individuals or names, including the president.

“Nonsense…. Your smart self couldn’t tell you that the post did not mention your name, neither did it mention anyone’s name! If not John Mahama, how can someone like you become a Deputy Chief of Staff….” the Tafo MP wrote.

In a subsequent post, the Tafo MP further called Dogbey’s character into question while referencing a June 30, 2025, post on Facebook by the Deputy Chief of Staff in which he had used invective to describe an attempted hack of his page.

“Such an uncultured character is our Deputy Chief of Staff. I miss the days of Abu Jinapor and Co,” Ekow Assafuah stated.

Helicopter crash was preventable; allow regional appointees to represent the President – Peace Watch Ghana

The subject of the need for a new jet for the use of Ghana’s presidency has reignited in the past few days following reports that the current presidential jet, a Falcon 900EX, has been grounded due to concerns over its airworthiness.

The opposition New Patriotic Party, citing its efforts to acquire a new presidential jet under the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government and the resistance it faced from the then-opposition National Democratic Congress, has led to accusations of hypocrisy being levelled against the now-ruling party.

Meanwhile, there is currently a growing call for the depoliticisation of the conversation on the need for a new presidential jet.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, speaking during a recent courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, stressed the need for the prioritisation of safety and operational efficiency over politics.

Lead scientist from the Ministry of Health in Ethiopia, Professor Milkyas Endale, has revealed that linking indigenous knowledge on biodiversity with modern science and integrating traditional medicines is the best way to move Africa forward.

According to the researchers, the Centre for Plant Medicine Research in Ghana is one of the best models selected by the World Health Organisation. They noted that the centre can lead research and development, product development, and capacity building in harnessing and improving medicinal research in Africa through necessary collaboration.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News on Monday, August 18, on the sidelines of a capacity-building workshop for the Armauer Hansen Research Institute in Ethiopia, Professor Milkyas Endale stated that the Ethiopian Ministry of Health is seeking to benchmark and replicate the Centre for Plant Medicine Research in Eastern Africa with the same scope.

“This is a very good model for African institutions to become a stronger and united Africa. This is one of the strong missions that should be supported by the African government,” he added.

On his part, the Head of Research and Innovation at the Centre for Plant Medicine Research in Mampong, Dr. Kofi Donkor, who took the Ethiopian team through laboratory management, herbal medicinal products, and advanced instrumental analysis, welcomed the proposal from the Ethiopian Ministry of Health.

He confirmed that discussions are underway to sign a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at moving Africa forward through collaboration in traditional medicine research.

” The MOU will spell out the modalities for our engagement and interactions with them. It is a very important piece of the document, and we will work hard at it and make sure  we have it signed, and then we can start collaborating.”

Agradaa, Ato Essien not part of prisoners granted presidential pardon

0

The presidency on Monday evening announced that President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across Ghana’s correctional facilities.

On the list of persons granted amnesty in the Monday [August 18, 2025] announcement are two inmates who had specifically petitioned the presidency for amnesty and had pleaded for consideration.

They were not named in the press statement.

Also on the list are 33 seriously ill prisoners, 36 inmates aged over 70 years, 87 on the death row, and two nursing mothers, who are all among the 998 granted presidential amnesty.

The statement from the presidency, signed and issued by the Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu did not name any of the beneficiaries.

But one person who had recently petitioned the president for amnesty is William Ato Essien, the former chief executive officer of the now-defunct Capital Bank, who was convicted in April 2023 for misapplying liquidity support from the Bank of Ghana and jailed on October 12, 2023, for 15 years.

However, he is currently on bail on medical grounds following an appeal he has filed.

Ato Essien’s petition for pardon had received growing support with many pleading that President Mahama should pardon him following reports that he was not well and had recently been admitted at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for treatment.

Those who joined the call for the president to pardon Ato Essien argued that the cases of all the other people who were charged for playing a role in the collapse of various other banks had been discontinued by the current government.

Consequently, the proponents for the grant of pardon for Ato Essien contended that, it was unfair for only William Ato Essien to remain in jail.

They argued that Ato Essien was unwell and was using a wheelchair in prison.

Ato Essien not part of list

The list of beneficiaries, a trusted source has told Graphic Online, does not include Patricia Asiedu Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, and the Chief Executive of the defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien, or other prominent names serving time in prison.

While Essien is already on a medical bail pending the determination of his appeal against his incarceration, Agradaa is yet to serve even six months out of her 15-year jail term, ruling her out of the opportunity.

The statement from the presidency announced that 33 seriously ill prisoners and 36 inmates aged seventy years and above, irrespective of their offence, were included in the amnesty.

A total of 787 first-time offenders are also part and are to be released.

Furthermore, 87 prisoners currently under sentence of death will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while 51 inmates serving life sentences will have their terms reduced to a definite 20-year sentence.

According to the statement, humanitarian considerations formed a significant part of the decision.

The President approved 998 out of the 1,014 inmates recommended for amnesty by the Prisons Service Council.

The move underscores the application of constitutional mercy provisions aimed at addressing prison congestion and specific humanitarian cases.

Mahama grants amnesty to 998 prisoners

0

President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country, following the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council, in consultation with the Council of State, and in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The decision forms part of the President’s constitutional mandate to exercise the prerogative of mercy in deserving cases. A total of 1,014 inmates were recommended for amnesty, out of which 998 were approved.

The Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the decision, noting that the amnesty was granted in line with humanitarian considerations and efforts to decongest the country’s prisons.

He emphasized that the exercise reflects the President’s commitment to ensuring that justice is tempered with mercy while maintaining public safety and security.

President Mahama thanks Ghanaians for support after helicopter crash tragedy

0

President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and the government have expressed deep gratitude to Ghanaians and the international community for the support shown following the helicopter crash of August 6, which claimed eight lives, including two ministers of state.

In a message issued by the Presidency on Monday, the President said the nation was moved by the outpouring of condolences, solidarity, and practical assistance offered during the period of mourning.

He noted that the sympathy messages, attendance at the state funeral, and acts of kindness towards the bereaved families brought comfort in a difficult time.

The statement commended individuals, security personnel, and corporate organisations that worked to ensure that the victims were given what it described as a “dignified and befitting Ghanaian burial.”

“As we return to the duties of resetting Ghana and building the Ghana we want, let us remain united in prayer, comfort one another, and continue to support the families affected by this tragedy,” the statement said.

The President in the statement prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in eternal peace.

Following the conclusion of the state funeral and the burial of all eight victims, the Chief of Staff has directed that flags at public buildings, which had been flown at half-mast in mourning, be restored to full mast with immediate effect.

Neymar (L) and Coutinho (R) shared a hug before the game started Neymar (L) and Coutinho (R) shared a hug before the game started

Brazilian football icons Neymar and Philippe Coutinho shared the pitch once again in an emotional reunion during a Brazilian Série A fixture between Santos and Vasco da Gama.

The match, played on Sunday, August 17, 2025, ended in a resounding 6-0 victory for Vasco da Gama, but the real headline was the sight of two childhood friends captaining their sides in a competitive showdown.

For Neymar, returning to Santos has been a homecoming filled with nostalgia, while Coutinho’s move to Vasco has given him a fresh platform to revive his career.

When the two lined up opposite each other, memories of their early days in Brazil came flooding back. Both men have known each other since childhood, their friendship blossoming long before they became global stars.

Despite the bond, there was no room for sentiment on the pitch. Coutinho, wearing the captain’s armband, inspired his side to a dominant performance that overwhelmed Neymar’s Santos.

Wetin be Israel controversial E1 settlement plan wey threaten to ‘bury di idea of Palestinian state’?

0

Plans for a controversial settlement project wey Israeli far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich say go “bury di idea of a Palestinian state” don spark widespread criticism.

Di so-called E1 scheme to build 3,401 homes in di occupied West Bank – between East Jerusalem and di Maale Adumim settlement – don dey frozen for many years sake of fierce opposition.

Di vast majority of di international community consider di settlements illegal under international law, although Israel no agree.

On Wednesday, Smotrich bin back di scheme, call di decision a “historic achievement”.

Di Palestinian foreign ministry don call di plan “extension of crimes of genocide, displacement and annexation” – accusations Israel don reject.

Di UN, di EU and various kontris, such as di UK and Turkey, don also criticise di E1 settlement plan and call for am to dey stopped.

Wetin be di E1 settlement plan?

Settlements na one of di most contentious issues between Israel and di Palestinians.

Di E1 settlement project, wey first dey proposed under Yitzhak Rabin in di 1990s, begin wit initial plans for 2,500 homes.

For 2004 e bin dey expanded to around 4,000 units along wit commercial and tourism facilities.

Between 2009 and 2020 new phases dey announced, including land confiscations, design plans and road construction.

But di proposals dey frozen each time due to international pressure.

Why e dey so controversial?

Developing di E1 area dey seen as effectively blocking di establishment of a Palestinian state.

Dat na sake of say di E1 site strategic position: e separate areas south of Jerusalem from those to im north and go prevent a contiguous Palestinian urban area wey connect Ramallah, East Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

According to di Israeli group Peace Now, wey dey monitor settlement activity in di West Bank, di new housing units go represent a 33% increase in di size of di Maale Adumim settlement, wey currently get population of around 38,000 residents.

Di project go connect di residential area to surrounding industrial zones and go pave di way for expanding Israeli control over large parts of di West Bank, according to Peace Now.

Di group tok say di final approval hearing for di E1 settlement plan go hold next Wednesday by a technical committee wey don already reject all objections to di proposals.

Wetin be di occupied West Bank?

Di West Bank na di land between Israel and di River Jordan and na home to an estimated three million Palestinians.

Along wit East Jerusalem and Gaza, e be part of wetin dey widely known as di Occupied Palestinian Territories.

E get about 160 Israeli settlements, housing about 700,000 Jews, in di West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Di Palestinians don always oppose Israel presence in dis areas. Israel still get overall control of di West Bank, but since di 1990s, a Palestinian govment – known as di Palestinian Authority – don run most of im towns and cities.

Since Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, Israel pressure on West Bank Palestinians don increase sharply, wey justify as legitimate security measures.

In June, di UN recorded di highest monthly injury toll of Palestinians in over two decades – state say 100 Palestinians don dey injured by Israeli settlers.

During di first half of 2025, e bin record 757 settler attacks wey bin result in Palestinian casualties or property damage – a 13% increase on di same period in 2024.

Palestinians and human rights groups also accuse di Israeli security forces say dem fail for dia legal duty as occupiers to protect Palestinians as well as dia own citizens – not just turning a blind eye to settler attacks, but even join in, according to a 2024 report from Human Rights Watch.

Israel claims say di Geneva Conventions wey forbid settlement for occupied territories no apply – a view disputed by many of im own allies as well as international lawyers.

Palestinians want all Israeli settlements to dey removed as dey see di occupied West Bank as land for a future independent Palestinian state.

However, di Israeli govment no recognise di right of di Palestinians to have dia own state and argue say di West Bank na part of di Israeli homeland.

In July 2024, di top court of di UN, di International Court of Justice (ICJ), tok say Israel kontinu presence in di Occupied Palestinian Territories dey illegal and Israel should withdraw di settlers.

Among im oda far-reaching conclusions, di court tok say Israeli restrictions on Palestinians in di occupied territories constitute “systemic discrimination based on, inter alia, race, religion or ethnic origin”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu say court don make a “decision of lies”.

“Di Jewish pipo no be occupiers in dia own land – not in our eternal capital Jerusalem, nor in our ancestral heritage of Judea and Samaria [di West Bank]”, Mr Netanyahu tok for statement.

How di world don react to di E1 plan?

Following im announcement on di plan, Smotrich bin thank US President Donald Trump and Ambassador Mike Huckabee for dia support, affirm say, in im view, di West Bank na “one inseparable part of di Land of Israel promised by God”.

E also tok say di Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu support im plans to bring one million new settlers into di West Bank.

Di Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned di E1 project, call am an attack on di unity of Palestinian territory and a blow to di possibility to establish a state.

Tok na say di plan undermine geographic and demographic cohesion and entrenches di division of di West Bank into isolated areas wey dey surrounded by colonial expansion, making annexation easier.

In response to di plans to build in di E1 area, di US State Department tok say “a stable West Bank keep Israel secure and dey in line wit dis administration goal to achieve peace in di region”.

However, di UN and di EU don instead urge Israel not to progress di plan.

Di UN tok say construction in di E1 area go sever di northern and southern West Bank, “severely undermine di prospects for di realization of a viable, contiguous Palestinian State”.

Kaja Kallas, di EU foreign policy chief, tok say di E1 new settlement plan “further undermine di two-state solution while e be breach of international law”.

UK Foreign Minister David Lammy bin oppose di plans, say dey go “divide a future Palestinian state in two and mark a flagrant breach of international law”.

Turkey foreign ministry also condemn di decision, say e “disregards international law” and targets di “territorial integrity” of di state of Palestine.

Egypt bin call di project a “flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolutions.”

Di Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also oppose di scheme, describe am as assault on di “inalienable right of di Palestinian pipo to establish an independent and sovereign state based on di 4 June 1967 borders, wit East Jerusalem as im capital”.

Di E1 announcement come shortly afta various kontries, such as France and Canada, say dey plan to recognise one Palestinian state later dis year.

Currently most kontries – 147 of di UN 193 member states – formally recognise a Palestinian state.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer say di UK go also recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel meet certain conditions, including agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza and revive di prospect of a two-state solution.

Following di announcement of di E1 new settlement plan, Smotrich tok say go be “no state to recognise”.

“Whoever in di world dey try to recognise a Palestinian state today go receive our answer on di ground. No be wit documents nor wit decisions or statements, but wit facts. Facts of houses, facts of neighbourhoods,” e add.

A Reflection of Identity and Style

0

Hairstyles have long stood as more than just aesthetic choices — they are deeply personal expressions of identity, culture, and mood, particularly for women. From sleek, polished looks to wild, untamed curls, a woman’s hairstyle can speak volumes before she ever says a word. As fashion trends evolve and self-expression becomes even more celebrated, the world of hairstyling offers limitless opportunities to showcase individuality.

A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” — this famous quote by Coco Chanel highlights the emotional significance hair can carry. Whether it’s a subtle trim or a dramatic makeover, a change in hairstyle often signals a new chapter.

One of the most enduringly popular hairstyles is the bob cut. Known for its clean lines and versatility, the bob suits a variety of face shapes and can be styled to match virtually any mood — from professional to playful. Whether straight and structured or soft and tousled, the bob remains a timeless choice for women seeking simplicity without sacrificing style.

For those who love longer locks, layered cuts offer movement and volume, making them a favorite among women with thick or wavy hair. Layers can soften features and add dimension, making them perfect for those who want a dynamic yet manageable look.

In recent years, there’s been a powerful shift towards embracing natural textures, especially within communities of women with curly or coily hair. Styles like twist-outs, braid-outs, and the curly afro celebrate the beauty of natural curls while minimizing heat damage and maintaining hair health. At the same time, protective styles such as box braids, cornrows, and flat twists not only look stunning but also offer a practical way to reduce breakage and support growth.

When elegance is needed — for a formal event or a professional setting — updos come into play. High buns, French twists, and chignons offer a refined, polished look that can elevate any outfit. On the flip side, messy buns, ponytails, and half-up styles are great for casual days, providing both comfort and style on the go.

At its core, the best hairstyle is not about following trends — it’s about finding a look that makes a woman feel confident, beautiful, and true to herself. Whether that’s a bold pixie cut or long, flowing curls, the perfect hairstyle is the one that complements her lifestyle, personality, and natural beauty.

‘Ghana expects your resignation’ – Ntim Fordjour to Ablakwa – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has called for the resignation of the Foreign Affairs Minister and North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

This follows Ablakwa’s persistent criticism of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s use of private jets for international travels, and his earlier public declaration that he would resign if his own government did the same when in power.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, August 18, Rev. Fordjour accused Ablakwa of engaging in “petty politics” over presidential jet usage and travel expenses.

“Mr Principle @S\_OkudzetoAblak, Ghana is expecting your resignation,” the former Deputy Education Minister posted.

He further stated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) must apologise to Ghanaians and former President Akufo-Addo for politicising presidential travels.

He also urged the government to boldly propose the acquisition of a new presidential jet to ensure the President’s safety.

“NDC must apologise to Ghanaians and Prez Akufo-Addo for doing petty politics with presidential travels. Govt must be bold to submit proposal for the acquisition of new Presidential Jet for the President’s safety,” he wrote.

His post comes after President Mahama embarked on a two-nation trip to Japan and Singapore, reportedly on a commercial flight instead of the nation’s presidential jet, which is undergoing servicing in France.

Kanu Asked Obi To Pay For His Surgery & Obi Refused, He Begged Tinubu & Tinubu Paid For It—Ikeotuoye

John CDO Ikeotuoye, a gospel music crusader and business mogul, has alleged that Peter Obi once refused to assist football legend Kanu Nwankwo when he needed money for heart surgery. According to John, Obi told Kanu that he would not use his money for such a purpose.

In an interview with Talk True Podcast, John said after Obi’s refusal, Kanu turned to Bola Tinubu for help. He said Tinubu provided the financial support that enabled Kanu to undergo the surgery.

John also said that Obi’s current donations to hospitals are not genuine acts of kindness but rather political moves to promote his ambition of becoming president

In John’s words: “When Kanu Nwankwo had a heart problem, Peter Obi was one of the first people Kanu Nwankwo approached to pay for his surgery. Peter Obi told him that that is not what he will use his money for. Kanu came to Lagos State to meet Bola Tinubu, a Yoruba man, and he paid for his surgery”

Police discover guns and ammunition in deserted car

Fellow Ghanaians: How long will we keep overlooking illegal mining?

0

Fellow Ghanaians,

It’s over a week now since our nation was struck by a tragedy that froze us in grief. We lost eight of our own five senior public servants and three gallant members of the Ghana Armed Forces in a helicopter crash that has left empty chairs in our ministries, our security services, and in homes across this land.

These were not men on a leisurely trip. They were not flying to some comfortable retreat. They were on their way to Obuasi to do the people’s work.

Their mission was to help launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme—rCOMSDEP—a new initiative designed to confront one of the gravest challenges of our time: illegal mining, or galamsey.

This programme, built on three pillars, responsible cooperative mining schemes, skills development and alternative livelihoods, and the restoration of degraded lands was meant to be more than another speech, more than another committee.

It was intended to be a practical step toward saving our land, our rivers, and our communities from the greed that is eating them alive.

And so, Fellow Ghanaians, it would be a betrayal of their memory if we allow galamsey to continue to spread like a cancer across this nation.

It would be an insult to their sacrifice if we bury them, wipe our tears, and then go back to pretending that this problem will fix itself. Because it will not. It hasn’t in the last twenty years. And if we do nothing new, it will not in the next twenty either.

Galamsey is not just a mining issue, it is an existential crisis. Our forests are being stripped bare. Our cocoa farms are disappearing under the scars of open pits. Our rivers—Pra, Offin, Ankobra, Tano, Birim, once lifelines for communities, are now poisoned streams, choked with mercury and silt.

Children in mining areas are growing up with polluted water, poisoned fish, and barren land where nothing grows. Diseases linked to heavy metals are creeping into communities. Families must walk farther and farther for safe water. Farmers are abandoning their fields because their soil can no longer sustain crops.

It is not just the environment, it is our food security, our public health, our very survival as a people that is at stake. We are facing a slow-moving catastrophe that is every bit as dangerous as any war or epidemic. And yet, for too long, we have approached it as though it were a minor inconvenience.

We like to say that gold is a blessing, but for too long in Ghana, it has behaved like a curse. A curse because we have allowed greed to triumph over reason. A curse because instead of harnessing it to build, we have permitted it to destroy.

A curse because those who profit from it, whether they are the small-time digger with a shovel, the politically connected “big men” who finance excavators, or the foreign syndicates that ship our wealth away do so without paying the true price for the devastation they leave behind.

The truth we do not like to say out loud is this: our fight against galamsey has failed because too many people in positions of power benefit from it. We deploy soldiers to mining sites, but some return as protectors of the very illegal operators they were sent to stop.

We pass laws and issue bans, but licences are quietly issued under the table. We seize excavators in the daytime and they vanish by nightfall. We arrest small operators but never the political and business kingpins who bankroll them.

We are not losing the fight because we lack laws or machinery, we are losing it because we lack the collective will to sever the interests that profit from destruction.

We have tried “Operation Vanguard,” “Operation Halt,” river guards, drones, task forces, but each effort collapses under the weight of political interference, corruption, and the simple fact that in Ghana, we have not yet made environmental crimes carry the kind of punishments that scare powerful people.

Other countries have shown that it can be done. In the Philippines, a nationwide crackdown in 2012 shut down over 40 illegal mines in a matter of weeks, prosecuted financiers, and restored thousands of hectares of land.

In Costa Rica, open-pit mining was banned outright, and the government invested in eco-tourism and alternative livelihoods for miners. In Rwanda, strict traceability rules for minerals have made it almost impossible to sell illegally mined gold the open market.

The rCOMSDEP programme that our departed officials were heading to launch offers a way forward, if we take it seriously. Responsible cooperative mining means that communities themselves have a stake in doing things the right way, in following safety and environmental standards.

Skills development and alternative livelihoods mean that young people in mining areas will not have to choose between poverty and poisoning their own land.

And restoring degraded lands means that the scars of galamsey do not remain as permanent reminders of our national failure, but are healed into fertile ground again.

But for rCOMSDEP to succeed, it cannot be yet another beautifully bound policy document gathering dust. It must be backed by resources, by enforcement, and by political courage.

It must mean that if a minister’s nephew or a general’s cousin or they themselves are caught in illegal mining, the law still applies. It must mean that the soldiers deployed to protect mining areas are monitored, held accountable, and removed if they betray their duty.

It must mean that every excavator found in a riverbed is confiscated and destroyed, not quietly returned to its owner.

Fellow Ghanaians, we must also confront the hypocrisy in our own national psyche. Many of us say we oppose galamsey, but we buy the cheap gold it produces. We say we love our rivers, but we look away when a neighbour rents his farm to illegal miners.

We curse the destruction on Facebook, then vote for politicians who protect the financiers. The fight against galamsey is not just about what happens in the bush, it is about the choices we make in our homes, our markets, and our polling stations.

And let us remember this: the fight will not be won in a single year. It will take sustained pressure, legal reform, and the patience to see degraded lands restored and alternative livelihoods take root.

It will require that we measure success not in how many miners we chase off a site, but in how many communities no longer depend on galamsey to survive. It will require leadership that does not change its tune with every election cycle.

The death of these seven men—Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Samuel Aboagye, Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—should mark the beginning of a new chapter, one in which we finally decide that enough is enough.

Gold must not be our curse. The rivers must run clear again. The forests must grow again. And the land must be able to feed its people again. If we do not stop galamsey now, there will come a day when no amount of gold will buy back what we have lost.

Let their mission not die with them. Let it live in our laws, in our enforcement, and in our national will. And let us prove, finally, that we are a people who can protect our blessings from becoming our destruction.

According to a police statement dated August 18 and signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, the patrol team, while on routine duty along the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road, spotted a white Toyota Sienta with registration number NR 289-24 suspiciously parked near a bushy stretch of the roadside.

•Cowrie shells
•One pair of sandals
•A Ghana Card and Temporary Driver’s License (name withheld for investigative purposes).

The vehicle has been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, and all recovered items have been retained as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command expressed its commitment to preventing violent crime and ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has visited the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) following a clash at its Emergency Department that was captured in a viral social media video.

The confrontation involved relatives of an accident victim and medical staff, reportedly over alleged delays in treating a critically injured patient.

The situation, which escalated into the assault of a nurse, compelled hospital management to call in the Ghana Police Service to restore order.

In a statement on Monday, August 18, 2025, the Head of Public Relations at the hospital, Juliana Haruna, explained that the incident occurred while staff were managing multiple emergencies.

“The Emergency Department of GARH is one of the busiest in the country, receiving multiple cases daily. At the time of the incident, clinicians were actively attending to other emergencies when relatives and friends of the accident victim invaded the emergency triage,” the statement read.

The hospital further noted, “Their overwhelming presence disrupted the smooth delivery of care, caused unnecessary tension, and even threatened the safety of our clinicians. Gyakie unveils trailer for upcoming debut album After Midnight

0

Ghana’s songbird Gyakie has unveiled the official trailer for her highly anticipated debut album, After Midnight, set for release on August 29th.

The trailer offers fans an intimate glimpse into the story, spirit, and soul behind her next chapter. Directed by celebrated filmmaker Alex Piper, who has worked with global stars like Rema, Playboi Carti, and Travis Scott, the visual captures Gyakie’s artistry with cinematic depth, spotlighting her evolution from a young girl with music in her blood to an artist fully stepping into her power.

Born to legendary Ghanaian musician Nana Acheampong, Gyakie carries a rich musical heritage. However, After Midnight is her own statement: a deeply personal body of work shaped in the stillness and mystery of the night. The album’s title draws from the hours it was created, with nearly every song written and recorded after midnight.

“Almost all the songs on the album were recorded after midnight,” Gyakie shares.

“It is within those hours that I find my best inspiration to write. The peace and quiet, the sounds from the birds, the serenity—everything about that time fuels my creativity.”

Gyakie named in 2025 Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 list

It holds the weight of reflection, introspection, and spirituality, capturing hours spent in deep thought, prayer, or private emotional release, tied to a cherished family tradition of her mother praying for her and her siblings after midnight.

Banks with high NPLs to face dividend and bonus restrictions from 2027

0

Bank of Ghana's new headquarters Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters

A new directive from the Bank of Ghana indicates that, starting January 2027, banks and regulated financial institutions with non-performing loan (NPL) ratios above 10% will be barred from paying dividends to shareholders and bonuses to staff.

According to the central bank, lenders with NPL ratios between 10% and 15% will be given a two-year window to clean up their loan books before sanctions take effect.

Institutions with NPLs of 15% or higher, however, will face immediate restrictions covering dividend payments, staff incentives, and loan portfolio expansion.

For microfinance institutions, a stricter threshold of 5% has been set.

The Bank of Ghana explained that the measure is intended to enforce stronger credit risk management, protect depositors, and improve asset quality in the financial sector.

The new rules mean shareholders of weaker banks should not expect dividend payouts, while staff bonuses will also be curtailed if bad loans remain elevated. Customers may additionally face tighter credit access as lenders act to avoid breaching the threshold.

With about 16 months to comply, banks and other financial institutions have a limited window to restructure bad assets or risk losing the ability to reward investors and employees.

How does Ghana compare to its CAF Group I rivals

0

Players of the Black Stars line up for a photo before a game Players of the Black Stars line up for a photo before a game

Ghana currently sits atop Group I in the CAF 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with 15 points after six matchdays. The group contains Mali, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Comoros and Chad. Qualification resumed in March 2025 and continues in September.

The Black Stars aim to return to the global stage after missing out in 2018. They now lead the pack after a 3-0 win over Madagascar that reinforced their campaign with authority.

Group dynamics and current standings

Ghana has built a comfortable advantage with five wins in six matches, scoring goals with precision and maintaining a tidy defence. Their only blemish came in a 1-0 loss to Comoros in November 2023.

Since then, they have tightened up, with wins over Madagascar and Chad making a statement. Comoros follows on 12 points and shows tenacity but remains less convincing in terms of goal difference.

Madagascar holds third place on ten points and impressed with a 4-1 win away in Bangui, though they lost heavily when visiting Ghana.

Mali, with nine points, has been inconsistent. Their 0-0 draw with Central African Republic stalled progress, and a 2-1 home loss to Ghana dealt a blow to early hopes.

Central African Republic and Chad, with five and zero points respectively, have found Group I less forgiving.

Ghana’s superiority appears reflected in every relevant column: points, goals scored, goals conceded, and the confidence with which they handle key fixtures.

Their depth has allowed them to rotate without suffering any loss of sharpness. Jordan Ayew’s five goals place him among the competition’s top scorers. The midfield, anchored by experienced professionals, has suffocated opponents, while the back line has remained disciplined.

Squad strength and tactical shape

The quality of players in the Ghana squad sets them apart. link textJordan Ayew (Leicester City) and Mohammed Kudus (West Ham United) headline a group with significant Premier League pedigree.

Thomas Partey (Arsenal) provides stability, while Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth) and Abdul Fatawu (Leicester City) bring width and speed. These players are battle-tested and accustomed to high-pressure fixtures.

Comoros, by contrast, draws largely from French lower divisions and a handful of regulars in Ligue 1 and 2. While they have produced strong home form, their away record has been uneven.

Madagascar has been adventurous, deploying attacking setups in favourable matches, but they conceded three goals without reply in Kumasi.

Mali fields a competitive team with Premier League figures such as Yves Bissouma (Tottenham) and Cheick Doucouré (Crystal Palace). Still, their forward play has lacked bite outside the performance of Kamory Doumbia, who has scored five.

Central African Republic and Chad have struggled to keep shape under pressure. Their defensive records, especially Chad’s -14 goal difference, indicate that the group’s upper half is operating on a different level of preparation and execution.

Global attention and continental pride

Fans and supporters from abroad continue to show strong backing for Ghana’s qualification run. That support appears in subtle but measurable ways. One example is how Ghana features in sports betting in Australia, where odds of 151.0 place them alongside Egypt and Senegal.

This presence signals global recognition and interest beyond the continent. International fans see Ghana as a realistic contender, and bookmakers respond to that attention.

No other CAF Group I team appears on these global betting charts. The absence of Mali, Madagascar, Comoros, Central African Republic and Chad implies their perceived chances are too low to attract market demand. Ghana’s inclusion reflects its established football identity and continued international attention in competitive global contexts.

Where focus belongs

Ghana’s dominance within Group I is reflected in numbers, performances and attention. The squad includes footballers accustomed to Europe’s highest levels. Their organisation is consistent, and they execute plans with clarity. Fixtures attract interest from beyond the continent, and the team’s visibility reflects the relevance of their campaign.

Their rivals show glimpses of cohesion but have not sustained that across the qualifying period. Ghana keeps progressing, with matches ahead that offer opportunity to secure top place before the final matchday arrives.

A former staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hopeson Adorye, has rejected calls by the National Council of the party for all suspended members to return.

The NPP recently granted amnesty to its members who were suspended across the country in a bid to forge unity and reorganise the party ahead of the 2028 general elections following its historic defeat at the 2024 polls.

Reacting to this, Hopeson Adorye, who is now a proud member of the newly formed Movement for Change, vowed never to return to the party ever again.

Speaking to Starr FM on Monday, August 18, 2025, Mr Adorye said he would rather join the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) than return to the NPP.

“I would rather join NDC than return to NPP,” he reportedly said.

Read the post below:

He further advised Ghanaian youth against joining the NPP, saying they stifle progress.

“If you are a youth in Ghana and want to progress in politics, don’t ever think of joining the NPP,” he said.

Read another post below:

Hopeson Adorye left the NPP to join the Movement for Change in the run-up to the 2024 election.

He reportedly pitched camp with the Movement for Change after his preferred presidential candidate, John Alan Kyerematen, lost the NPP flagbearer race in November 2023 to the then former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Alan Kyerematen and his supporters, including Hopeson Adorye, accused the NPP of manipulating the electoral process to favour Dr Bawumia in the 2023 presidential primary.

The group consequently left the NPP to form the Movement for Change and contested the presidential elections.

The NPP is hoping to go into the 2028 elections with a united front by extending an olive branch to all of its disgruntled members to return, but Hopeson Adorye has said that the group who left to join Alan Kyerematen will never rejoin the party.

Adorye’s comment on NPP’s amnesty sparks reaction

Hopeson Adorye’s comments on NPP’s grant of amnesty to its suspended members has sparked reactions on social media.

Paul Afoko reacts to NPP’s amnesty move

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that a former chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko, reacted to the party’s decision to grant amnesty to its suspended members across the country.

Paul Afoko, who was suspended as chairman of the NPP in October 2015, welcomed the amnesty.

However, he questioned why the amnesty came with a condition that prevented the suspended returnees from contesting in any internal party elections.

Single Mothers Can’t Raise Boys Into ‘Proper Men’ — Actor Jim Iyke

0

According to The Punch, Nollywood star Jim Iyke has sparked a heated debate with his recent remarks about single motherhood and the upbringing of male children. Speaking during a podcast interview, the actor argued that while single mothers often do their best, they cannot fully raise boys into “proper men” without the influence of a father figure.

According to Iyke, raising a boy into a man requires a balance of discipline, guidance, and role modeling that, in his view, only a father can provide. “A woman can raise a child, yes. But to raise a boy into a man, you need a man. A mother cannot teach a boy how to be a proper man. It’s not about love or sacrifice—it’s about experience and identity,” he said.

Iyke noted that many single mothers go through immense struggles to ensure their children succeed, but insisted that there are aspects of manhood that require the direct mentorship of a father. He stressed that young boys often seek role models, and without a father present, they may turn to external influences such as peers, celebrities, or even negative role models in society.

Image

His statement has stirred strong reactions among Nigerians, especially on social media. Some critics have accused the actor of downplaying the resilience and success stories of single mothers who have raised exceptional men despite the odds. Others, however, agreed with his perspective, pointing out that boys need positive male figures in their lives to understand responsibility, leadership, and discipline.

Jim Iyke further explained that his view was not meant to insult single mothers but to highlight the importance of fatherhood. “It’s not about blaming women. Circumstances happen—divorce, death, abandonment. But we cannot deny that boys need fathers. Society must encourage men to step up, rather than leaving women to shoulder everything,” he added.

The actor, who is also a father, revealed that his own experiences shaped his perspective, stressing that he strives to be present in his children’s lives because he believes his role as a father cannot be replaced.

Iyke’s comments have reopened conversations about family dynamics in Nigeria, the growing number of single-parent households, and the importance of fatherly involvement in raising the next generation. While the debate continues, one thing remains clear—Jim Iyke’s words have touched a sensitive nerve in society.

Karpowership and Seatrium unveil LNGTS Americas – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

Karpowership and Seatrium launch LNGTS Americas and sign LoI for Next-Gen floating power projects.

Karpowership and Seatrium, while strengthening their strategic partnership with next-generation Powership and LNG Terminal Ship (LNGTS) conversions, also celebrated the naming of Karadeniz LNGTS Americas, the fifth member of Karpowership’s LNGTS fleet.

Karadeniz LNGTS Americas will join the growing fleet of vessels operated by Karpowership, the world’s largest owner and operator of the floating power plant technology known as Powerships.

LNGTS units can be paired with Powerships (LNG-to-Power), which are multi-fuel enabled, to deliver electricity in regions where onshore infrastructure is limited and access to natural gas is absent.

“With thanks to our partners at Seatrium, whose innovation, expertise, and commitment have been integral to our journey, we are delighted to add Karadeniz LNGTS Americas to our expanding fleet,” said Orhan Remzi Karadeniz, Chief Executive Officer of Karpowership. “Our model of integrating Powerships and LNGTS offers countries a unique and cost-effective solution to achieving energy security while utilizing cleaner fuels. Our one-of-a-kind, industry-leading design and know-how are unique in the world, with no equal in theirfield. We are very proud to have become a significant player in the LNG field in just six years.”

Karpowership currently owns 50 Powerships with an installed capacity of 10,000 MW and 11 LNGTS units, including those under construction or in the pipeline. Having a global footprint across 20 countries, Karpowership is delivering cleaner, reliable, and cost-effective electricity on four continents, including LNG-to-power projects in Brazil and Senegal; the latter being the first of its kind on the African continent.

Today, Karpowership represents 1% of global installed Gas-to-Power capacity and aims to double that to 2% in the next 10 years. As a part of this plan, the company signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Seatrium to expand its floating power capabilities. According to the LoI, Seatrium will begin converting three high-capacity LNGTS and Karpowership’s next generation of Powerships, which are designed with a modular system adaptable to project needs. The new design will allow for the integration of advanced technologies such as CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) systems or turbines when required.

“This collaboration underscores Seatrium’s role in transforming the energy industry through innovation and strategic partnerships in energy assets. By uniting our world-class offshore engineering expertise with Karpowership’spioneering energy solutions, we are advancing the development and deployment of rapid, reliable, and flexible power solutions to meet growing global energy demands, said Chris Ong,Chief Executive Officer of Seatrium.

The naming ceremony and the LoI reaffirm Karpowership’scommitment to providing energy security, meeting countries’ needs today, and building resilience for the long term.

National Contingency Fund needed to aid families in tragedies – Kamal-Deen – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Kamal-Deen Abdulai, has called for the establishment of a law-backed national contingency fund to support families affected by unexpected national tragedies.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, August 18, Alhaji Kamal-Deen argued that while the recent initiative to set up a Children’s Support Fund for victims of the August 6 helicopter crash is commendable, such interventions must be properly structured and legally protected.

“If we need to promulgate a law or enact a law that says the government will set up a fund to deal with contingency issues at the right time, issues we do not anticipate, and when they happen, a percentage of this will go to families that are affected, then we should moot it properly.

“We should present it to Parliament, establish a law like that, and make it unalterable. Otherwise, we will open the floodgates for people to set up funds indiscriminately. We should streamline and have legal backing, or we risk opening the floodgate,” he cautioned.

His comments come in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement of a Children’s Support Fund to cater for the children of the eight victims of the helicopter crash. The President announced that Stanbic Bank has provided an initial seed capital of GHC 500,000 to launch the initiative.

Paying tribute to the deceased, President Mahama described the crash as a national tragedy that has “cast its shadow over the heart of Ghana.” Speaking at the funeral service for the victims on Friday, August 15, he said the fund would cover the education of the victims’ children from primary school through to the university level.

The victims, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, were buried on August 10.

The remaining six  Defence Ministers, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Samuel Aboagye, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, were laid to rest on Friday, August 15.

Laide Adeyiga is telling the stories Nollywood needs right now

0

Laide Adeyiga’s love affair with acting began long before she stepped onto a set. Growing up in Ipaja, Lagos, she would gather her siblings and re-enact scenes from Nollywood films, slipping into characters as though she had been born for them. By the time she was a teenager, she knew this wasn’t just a passing hobby but her true calling.

Determined to sharpen her gift, she enrolled at Lagos State University to study Theatre Arts. There, she didn’t just earn a degree; she learned the discipline of a craft, how to project her voice to fill a theatre, dig deep into the soul of a character, understand scripts with precision, and think like both an artist and a businesswoman.

Her professional debut came in 2014 at the Muson Centre in a stage play titled Echoes from the Lagoon. She played Comfort in a small cast of five, and though she admits she was nervous, the moment the spotlight hit, everything clicked, and she was ready to give her all.

But the path forward wasn’t glamorous or easy. Long auditions, constant rejections, and days without enough money for transport to get to a shoot tested her resolve, and moments of self-doubt began to creep in. A turning point came when the late director Rotimi Raji encouraged her to explore Yoruba Nollywood and personally introduced her to filmmaker AbiodunJimoh. Those first roles became the floodgate that opened her to an industry that would later know her name.

Since then, Laide has featured in more than 45 productions, from Itura and Rumour Has It to Picture PerfectSoólè, and Flatus. Along the way, she has worked alongside some of the industry’s finest, Bimbo Ademoye, Biodun Stephen, James Omokwe, Damilola Oni, Afeez Owo, and Paul Bogunmbe, while collecting awards such as the Emperor Award, the BON Award, and the Scream Award.

Still, acting alone wasn’t enough. She turned to film production, determined to tell the kinds of stories she felt were missing, stories that are rooted in truth, social relevance, and empathy.

That drive is at the heart of her latest project, Baasi Eran, released July 2024, the movie is born from a striking observation of how quickly society judges people without knowing their inner battles.

The film follows Sophie, a woman hungry for more in life and career. With her husband’s support, she begins to rise, but ambition soon tilts into greed, and the consequences are heavy. “At its core,” Laide says, “it’s about choices, redemption, and staying grounded when life starts opening doors for you.”

Bringing Baasi Eran to life took patience and precision. It’s financing required persistence, casting was done with intent, and shooting across multiple locations meant battling weather and logistics. But Laide was deliberate about building a team that connected deeply with the story rather than simply chasing big names, a decision she believes brought the magic on set.

The result is a film as honest as it is memorable, one that lingers long after the credits roll. Early reviews and social media reactions have been glowing, and Laide now has her eyes on festival submissions and both local and international distribution.

Through it all, her philosophy has stayed the same: consistency over shortcuts. “Talent is important,” she says, “but without discipline and consistency, it won’t take you far. My advice to young actors and producers is simple: do the work, stay humble, and keep learning.”

Off set, she draws balance from her family, close friends, and the unwavering support of her mother, the same woman who encouraged her to study Theatre Arts and pursue her dream. The journey has not been without personal cost; she’s candid about losing relationships over the roles she plays, yet remains unwilling to compromise her craft.

Looking ahead, Laide is developing a romantic drama, a limited series, and dreams of collaborating with international filmmakers. Whether local or global, her mission remains the same: to tell stories that change perspectives, uplift people, and create space for the next generation, especially young women.

“I want my legacy to be one of impact,” she says. “If my work can make people see the world differently, then I’ve done my job.”

Laide’s journey is not the ordinary path of a Nollywood filmmaker; it is a study in patience, precision, and persistence. From the set of Baasi Eran, her directorial debut, to the way she carries her storytelling, you can already sense she is not here to merely entertain but she is here to shift the culture.

Her career is still young, yet her work already bears the stamp of intention. For example, Baasi Eran is raw, deliberate, and unafraid to stare too long at the uncomfortable truths most filmmakers cut away from. She doesn’t flinch. Instead, she compels her audience to look deeper, to stay in the discomfort until they find meaning. That is cinema.

It is this refusal to compromise that makes Laide stand out in a saturated industry. While others chase the quick applause of box office returns, she is quietly building a filmography that will be remembered long after the noise fades. Every frame feels like it belongs to someone who knows exactly what they want to say and how they want it to be heard.

For years, Nollywood has struggled with stories that rush to entertain but rarely pause to breathe and give meaning. Too often, characters are rushed sketches, not full humans deep in emotions. However, Laide disrupts this pattern. She insists on patience, on building characters layer by layer, on giving silence as much weight as dialogue.

This is why her work matters. It is not simply about telling stories, it is about redefining how stories are told.

Laide is not just another filmmaker adding to Nollywood’s vast catalogue, she is a reminder of what cinema should do; reflect life honestly and move us to question it. She proves that the future of African cinema doesn’t lie in imitation but in intention. And perhaps her greatest achievement is this, she makes us believe again that film, at its best, is not just watched, but lived.

Musician Fameye has a message for young men struggling with commitment; “slow down and stick with one partner.”

According to him, chasing multiple women and indulging in habits like smoking are distractions that can hold young people back.

On August 18, 2025, the ‘Nothing I Get’ hitmaker took to social media to share his thoughts.

‘I have a new personality, he is called Antonio’ – Fameye ditches ‘Peter’

“Bro if you are doing too many girls, stop ok? It’s a bad habit. Bye,” he wrote.

He followed up with another post cautioning against smoking, stating:

“Smoking is a bad habit.”

His words quickly stirred reactions online. While some fans applauded him for speaking honestly about an issue many prefer to ignore, others turned it into a playful debate about relationships, loyalty, and personal freedom.

Some netizens praised him for advising young men, while others argued that relationships are complex and should be left to individual choice.

Though Fameye did not explain why he shared these statements, many speculate it could be part of a larger message he is preparing to unveil.

‘They are not a serious club’ – Alhaji Grusah slams Kotoko

Businessman and football administrator Alhaji Karim Grusah has taken aim at Asante Kotoko, describing the Porcupine Warriors as “not a serious club” after they abstained from voting during the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) 31st Ordinary Congress.

On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, delegates gathered at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram to decide on one of the most significant amendments in recent years, whether to extend the tenure of the GFA presidency from two terms to three.

The outcome was emphatic: 114 votes in favour, six against, and three abstentions. Kotoko, Ghana’s most successful club, was among those who declined to take a position.

Grusah, who had openly opposed the amendment in the weeks leading up to Congress, was unimpressed with Kotoko’s stance, voicing his displeasure during an interview on Akoma FM.

“Kotoko is not a serious club at all. A big club like Kotoko cannot fail to cast its vote in a major decision such as the amendment of the GFA’s statutes,” he said.

He further highlighted a growing concern around Kotoko’s preparations for continental football, with the club yet to confirm where it will host its CAF Confederation Cup fixtures.

“Meanwhile, their venue for the CAF Confederation Cup is still unknown at this time. They need to start taking things seriously,” he added.

The veteran football administrator, whose King Faisal side were relegated to Division One in June 2023, has long accused GFA President Kurt Okraku of failing to prioritise youth football development.

Tanzania police hunt traditional healer linked to student’s death

Police in Manyara Region are hunting for a traditional healer alleged to have provided misleading divination that led to the killing of a Form Four student, Yohana Konki (17), at Qash Secondary School in Babati District.

The student is reported to have been assaulted to death by fellow students on 16 August 2025 after being accused of stealing a tablet.

Manyara Regional Police Commander, SACP Ahmed Makarani, told The Citizen on Monday that the healer fled with his family and belongings soon after the incident.

“The healer escaped the same day after hearing that his divination had caused problems. We are still investigating and searching for him, and we believe he will be found,” he said.

Commander Makarani confirmed that 11 students remain in custody over the incident. Two others were released after evidence cleared them of involvement.

“One was not at school on the day of the incident. The other was passing by on his motorcycle when the attack occurred. His motorbike was actually used to rush the victim to hospital. He is not a suspect at this stage,” he explained.

Police say the tragedy began when two students who had lost a tablet consulted the traditional healer, who allegedly pointed to Yohana as the thief.

“After returning from the healer, they accused him of the theft. When he denied it, they beat him to death,” said Commander Makarani.

He urged the school administration to install CCTV cameras to help prevent similar incidents.

“Had there been cameras on the premises, the students could have identified the culprit instead of relying on misleading divination,” he said.

Yohana’s aunt, Elizabeth Konki, said the family had been left devastated, lamenting that her nephew’s dreams had been cut short by an undeserved death.

A student witness, Hassan Juma, claimed that the attackers beat Yohana with sticks after being told by the healer that he was responsible for the missing device.
