Cardi B Defends Tyla Amid Online Criticism

0

American rap superstar Cardi B has stepped in to defend South African singer Tyla after the rising music sensation faced a wave of negativity on social media. The Grammy-winning rapper voiced her thoughts on the growing trend of online hate towards public figures, suggesting that much of the criticism has little to do with genuine grievances and more to do with an underlying dislike for celebrities.

In a recent online exchange, Cardi B expressed frustration over how quickly people turn on famous personalities, especially young artists like Tyla who are still building their careers. According to her, the backlash often stems from unfounded resentment rather than any real wrongdoing.

“People just don’t like celebrities,” Cardi remarked, pointing out that social media culture has made it easier for individuals to criticize and scrutinize stars without context or compassion. She further noted that the harsh judgment directed at entertainers can be emotionally draining, particularly for those unaccustomed to the relentless spotlight.

Tyla, who has rapidly gained international attention with her chart-topping hits and unique style, has recently been subjected to negative online chatter despite her success. Fans and industry peers have rallied around her, praising her talent and reminding critics that public figures are still human.

Cardi B’s comments have sparked a broader discussion about how celebrity culture and social media intersect, with many agreeing that the digital space often fuels unnecessary hostility. The rapper’s defense of Tyla serves as a reminder of the pressures artists face and the importance of empathy in public discourse.

For Tyla, the support from a global star like Cardi B could be a morale boost as she continues to navigate fame and its challenges. Meanwhile, the conversation around online hate and celebrity treatment shows no signs of slowing down, underscoring the need for a healthier, more respectful online environment.

I’m No Longer NPP—Now I Strongly Support President Mahama’s Third-Term Agenda:Omanhene Vows

0

The debate over whether President John Dramani Mahama should seek a third term has grown louder after seasoned broadcaster Omanhene Kwabena Asante openly endorsed the idea during a discussion on Asempa FM’s political show Ekosiisen. Omanhene, speaking with confidence, declared that he fully supports Mahama if he decides to run again, stressing that there is nothing wrong with it. His bold statement has sparked admiration from some and outrage from others, pushing the conversation about leadership, democracy, and constitutional limits back into the spotlight.

Omanhene’s words reflect more than just his personal opinion—they capture a sentiment shared by a section of Ghanaians who believe Mahama remains a stabilizing force. He praised Mahama’s achievements in infrastructure, education, and economic management, insisting that Ghana needs an experienced leader in difficult times. He also questioned why constitutional restrictions should block the will of the people if they demand Mahama’s return.

The endorsement comes amid speculation that Mahama might consider seeking constitutional changes to clear the way for another term. Ghana’s 1992 Constitution only allows two terms for presidents, but some legal experts argue that Parliament and a national referendum could amend it. Others say the Constitution must adapt if the people call for continuity in leadership, while critics insist that tampering with term limits threatens Ghana’s democracy.

Supporters of Mahama’s possible comeback point to the current economic challenges, youth unemployment, and governance concerns, arguing that he has the experience to restore investor confidence and revive hope among citizens. Omanhene’s backing adds weight to this narrative, especially given his influence and reputation in political discussions.

But his remarks have drawn sharp criticism, especially from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who see the idea as dangerous and undemocratic. They argue that allowing a third term would weaken checks and balances and set a precedent that could harm Ghana’s democratic growth. Some have accused Omanhene of showing bias, while others believe his comments were poorly timed.

On social media, the issue has taken center stage, with hashtags like #MahamaThirdTerm and #OmanheneSpeaks trending. While many praised Omanhene for speaking his mind, others warned about the risks of altering the Constitution for political ambitions.

For now, Mahama has not commented on the matter, neither confirming nor denying any such plans. His silence has only fueled speculation, with analysts suggesting that Omanhene’s endorsement could be a way of testing the waters and gauging public reaction.

Whether it becomes a larger movement or remains a lone endorsement, the issue has shifted the national conversation. It’s no longer just about Mahama’s future it’s about Ghana’s Constitution, the strength of its democracy, and the influence of public opinion in shaping the country’s direction.

Commonwealth Secretariat refutes claims of letterhead misuse in Ghana

0

The Commonwealth Secretariat has dismissed suggestions of any misuse of its letterhead in Ghana, stressing that no such incident has taken place.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Satinder Bindra, the Secretariat clarified that it has not made any comment or denial about the unauthorised use of its letterhead because “no such incident has occurred.”

The Secretariat further explained that while more than 90 organisations are accredited to it, they operate entirely independently and share no office bearers with the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The clarification comes in response to speculation linking the Secretariat’s identity to alleged irregularities in Ghana.

Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who the party has pardoned through an amnesty granted by the National Council are not eligible to contest any immediate party elections.

The pardoned members have at least two years to wait on the sidelines before they can become eligible and contest any party elections.

This was contained in the statement dated August 16, 2025 and issued by the NPP’s acting national chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey.

Shut up! You are making noise – How a soldier angrily yelled at a young man at state funeral

This decision to grant amnesty to party members who have been facing various disciplinary action(s), he mentioned, was taken by the National Council at its emergency meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The letter requested all those “who have forfeited their membership to submit a formal application to the national secretariat for reinstatement.”

The statement emphatically stressed that “Upon reinstatement, you shall remain ineligible to contest any internal party election until a mandatory two-year period has elapsed.”

According to the statement, this measure reflected the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead.

Given this resolution, the NPP advised leadership at all levels to refrain from any arbitrary suspension of members, adding that the amnesty was granted in the interest of party unity and reconciliation.

Traders’ group urges action on free movement to unlock AfCFTA promise

0

A traders’ group, Cross-Border Women Traders Association (CBWTA), has urged the government to make Free Movement a reality to unlock the promise of the African Continental Free Trade (AfCTA) of empowering grassroots commerce.

According to members of the association, for decades, African leaders have spoken passionately about dismantling trade barriers and uniting the continent.

Yet, for the thousands of women whose livelihoods depend on moving goods across African borders, the reality of free movement remains painfully elusive.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Oscar Akaba-Norvixoxo, National Coordinator of the CBWTA, said the African Union’s Free Movement Protocol and ECOWAS’ Protocol on Free Movement of Persons already exist on paper, but slow and fragmented implementation continues to strangle cross-border commerce.

“Every delay at the border, every unnecessary inspection, and every demand for unofficial payment cuts into profits, wastes time, and undermines the dignity of hardworking traders,” he noted.

Women account for more than 60 per cent of informal cross-border traders in West Africa. They transport fresh produce, textiles, and daily essentials, often trekking long distances under extreme heat, only to face lengthy queues, red tape, and sometimes harassment.

For them, free movement is not an abstract policy — it is the difference between profit and loss, safety and risk, progress and stagnation.

Fully implementing free movement, Mr. Akaba-Norvixoxo said, would reduce delays, lower transaction costs, expand access to wider markets, protect perishable goods from spoilage, and create safer trading conditions by reducing exposure to corruption and abuse.

The CBWTA is calling on the African Union, ECOWAS, and national governments to fast-track measures that make free movement a lived reality.

“Including grassroots women traders in planning and monitoring will ensure that policies reflect actual conditions on the ground,” he stressed.

A flagship initiative the Association is championing is the Women Traders Border ID Card, which will formally recognise registered women traders, streamline customs procedures, and reduce harassment.

The card would also connect traders to digital tools — including e-trader registration, e-duty compliance systems, online market access, and e-finance services — to professionalise and scale up women-led cross-border businesses.

The CBWTA says it is ready to, Train members on their rights under free movement protocols, provide policymakers with data on trade barriers and harassment, Partner in gender-sensitive border modernisation projects, Roll out the Women Traders Border ID Card in partnership with border agencies.

“Free movement in Africa is not just about trade — it is about dignity, opportunity, and economic justice,” Mr. Akaba-Norvixoxo said.

“AfCFTA and ECOWAS have laid the groundwork. Now governments must deliver — and support innovations like the Women Traders Border ID Card that put policies into practice.

For the women who power Africa’s markets, the time to act is now,” he added.

From the welded Golden Stool to private jet saga – Four controversial statements of Dormaahene against Asantehene

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II (L) and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II (L) and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, the Dormaahene and Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, has once again stirred controversy with a series of remarks directed at the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Over the years, the outspoken traditional ruler who also serves as a High Court judge under his legal name, Justice Daniel Mensah, has consistently challenged historical narratives, questioned authority and openly criticised the lifestyle and decisions of the Ashanti monarch.

Below are four of his most contentious statements

The Golden Stool looked welded

On August 14, 2025, while speaking at the launch of the Bonokyempem Council in the Bono Region, the Dormaahene cast doubt on the sacred history of the Ashanti Golden Stool (Sika Dwa Kofi).

Tradition holds that the legendary high priest Okomfo Anokye commanded the stool down from the skies onto the lap of Osei Tutu I, the first Asantehene, in the 17th century.

However, Agyeman Badu II dismissed this account, claiming that when the stool was recently displayed, it appeared “welded” rather than divinely descended.

“If anyone tells you they can summon something to descend from the sky, I, Agyeman Badu II, am saying it is a lie,” he declared.

Criticism of private jet use and properties abroad

In a separate address to his people, the Dormaahene criticised the Asantehene for allegedly prioritising personal luxury over the welfare of his subordinates.

Without directly naming Otumfuo, he condemned leaders who travel in private jets and acquire properties abroad while their subjects face hardship.

“I will never hire private jets or use my money to buy properties abroad while my people are suffering,” he said, in a thinly veiled jab at the Asantehene.

He also rebuked Otumfuo’s earlier comments describing Bono chiefs as “violent,” arguing that such remarks were divisive and disrespectful.

Challenge over Fiapre paramountcy

On March 21, 2025, Agyeman Badu II issued a challenge to the Asantehene over his plans to elevate the Fiapre Traditional Council in Bono to paramountcy.

The Dormaahene insisted that the Fiapre stool falls under his jurisdiction and vowed to abdicate his throne if Otumfuo succeeded.

“I challenge the Asantehene Otumfuo, as the Dormaahene and Bono president, that if he elevates the Fiapre stool to paramountcy, I will abdicate the throne given to me by the Bono people on that very day,” he declared.

The remark followed Otumfuo’s announcement at an Asanteman Council meeting on March 17, 2025, where he asserted his sole authority to elevate divisional councils in both Bono and Ahafo regions.

The Golden Stool looks welded; nobody can command anything from the skies – Dormaahene claims

Blaming Otumfuo for the Sampa chieftaincy crisis

Dormaahene had previously accused the Asantehene of fueling a violent chieftaincy crisis in Sampa, Jaman North District.

Addressing the then Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia at the Bono Regional House of Chiefs in May 2024, he alleged that Otumfuo’s interference in a case already before the courts and the Bono chiefs was disrespectful and destabilising.

“Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the reason the Sampa crisis is persisting… You take out a matter before the court to go and resolve in Kumasi, and you don’t bring it before the panel of Bono chiefs,” he lamented.

The Dormaahene has long disputed historical claims linking the Bono and Ashanti people, particularly assertions that an Asantehene elevated the Dormaa stool.

In October 2023, he openly rejected Otumfuo’s claim that his uncle elevated Dormaa to paramountcy, stressing that the Dormaa stool predated the Ashanti kingdom by some 300 years.

Agradaa Absent, Allegations of Asiamah’s Lavish Nights at Her Residence Stir Reactions

0

Controversial evangelist and media personality, Patricia Asiedua, widely known as Nana Agradaa, may be serving time in prison, but her name continues to dominate public discussions. New claims have surfaced suggesting questionable activities at her residence in her absence, stirring widespread debate across communities and online platforms.

According to reports, a man identified as Asiamah, who is believed to have close ties with Agradaa, has allegedly been using her home as a base for entertaining women. Eyewitnesses allege that he is often seen in the company of young ladies at the residence, where social gatherings and private enjoyment are said to take place. This has raised concerns among neighbors, some of whom view the development as a sign of disrespect to Agradaa during her incarceration.

The alleged behavior has fueled intense conversation on social media, with opinions divided. While some users have criticized the situation as an act of betrayal, others argue that the reports remain speculative, urging the public to treat the matter cautiously until credible evidence emerges.

Nana Agradaa, who has often found herself at the center of controversy in Ghana’s religious and entertainment landscape, is no stranger to public scrutiny. From her previous clashes with authorities to her unconventional style of evangelism, her life has frequently been under the spotlight. These new allegations now add yet another chapter to her ongoing saga, leaving many wondering how she will respond once informed of the situation.

So far, neither Agradaa’s relatives nor her legal representatives have commented on the matter. With no official confirmation, the claims remain allegations, though they continue to dominate public discourse.

2026 Budget hearings kick off this week as finance ministry targets jobs – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Ministry of Finance will this week begin public hearings towards the preparation of Ghana’s 2026–2029 Budget and Economic Policy.

The process seeks input from business associations, financial institutions, civil society groups, and the wider public to shape the government’s medium-term economic plan.

The 2026 budget, expected to be presented to Parliament on November 15, 2025, will focus heavily on job creation and private sector-led growth.

According to the Ministry, past submissions have significantly influenced national budgets.

Government has hinted that the priority aligns with recent World Bank recommendations, stressing that sustained employment opportunities are critical to Ghana’s economic recovery.

It has also announced that the 2026 budget will put job creation at the centre of its fiscal agenda.

Already, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) says it will push for a further reduction in commercial lending rates and tax rates to ease the cost of doing business.

GUTA believes additional cuts in lending rates are crucial. Public Relations Officer Joseph Paddy noted that while inflation and the policy rate have dropped, interest rates remain high.

The NDC has adopted door-to-door campaign strategy for the by-election The NDC has adopted door-to-door campaign strategy for the by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is mobilising for intensive campaign activities in Akwatia ahead of the September 2 by-election to elect a member of parliament, following the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the former legislator.

The election will be contested by Solomon Kwame Asumadu of NPP, Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq of NDC, as well as an Independent Candidate, David Ankomah.

A statement issued and signed by the Deputy Eastern Regional Secretary of NDC, Kwaku Boateng, on Sunday, August 17, called on all party faithfuls to join campaign activities in Akwatia.

“As we continue in our collective mission to build a better Ghana under the visionary leadership of, HE John Mahama, we invite all members, supporters, and sympathisers to join us in actively campaigning for our parliamentary candidate in the upcoming Akwatia by-election” the statement said.

The statement added that “this by-election presents a crucial opportunity for us to reclaim Akwatia and send a strong message of unity, strength, and purpose. Our candidate Bernard Bediako has been chosen to represent the hopes and aspirations of the people of Akwatia, and it is our duty as party members to rally behind them and ensure a resounding victory”.

Let us come together and demonstrate the unity, passion, and strength that define our great party”, stated the NDC.

T-bill auction undersubscribed 35% as yields continue to drop – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Investors last week continued to ease their demand for treasury bills, with the Treasury recording an undersubscription in its primary auction.

Total bids amounted to GH¢3.0 billion, of which GH¢2.73 billion was accepted, falling 35.6 percent short of the GH¢4.24 billion target.

The shortfall comes after a stronger performance in the August 8 auction, where the Treasury accepted GH¢6.68 billion out of GH¢6.89 billion tendered.

Analysts attribute the weaker demand largely to a shift of funds into other attractive instruments such as fixed deposits and repos.

A breakdown of the auction shows that GH¢2.02 billion out of GH¢2.05 billion in bids for the 91-day bill was accepted. For the 182-day bill, GH¢537 million was taken from GH¢678 million in bids, while the 364-day bill saw GH¢167 million accepted out of GH¢272 million tendered.

Yields continued their downward trajectory, ranging between 10 and 13 percent. The 91-day yield slipped by 7 basis points to 10.13 percent, the 182-day by 2 basis points to 12.23 percent, and the 364-day by 2 basis points to 13.08 percent.

Looking ahead, the government aims to raise GHS 6.42 billion at the next auction. This underscores the government’s sustained dependence on short-term domestic borrowing to refinance maturing debt and support liquidity management.

Lawyers for Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah accuse GTEC of bias, impropriety

0

A fierce battle has erupted between Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), with her lawyers accusing the Commission of overreach, bias, and impropriety in its handling of her academic and professional credentials.

In a letter dated August 13, addressed to GTEC’s Director General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Dr. Ayensu Danquah’s solicitors, led by David K. Ametefe, described the Commission’s actions as “abrasive, unnecessarily combative, and disparaging.”

They argue that GTEC’s correspondence fell short of the standards of professionalism and impartiality expected of a statutory body created under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023).

At the heart of the dispute is GTEC’s assessment of Dr. Ayensu Danquah’s right to use the title ‘Professor.’

Her lawyers insist that the Commission’s conclusions were not only unfounded but also procedurally irregular and damaging to her reputation.

“The assessment appears to have been carried out without transparency, and without clear indication of the statutory or regulatory framework relied upon,” the letter stated.

“This lack of procedural clarity raises legitimate apprehension that the process was unguided and influenced by subjective or extraneous considerations.”

The lawyers also took issue with the circulation of GTEC’s letters to high-ranking offices, including Parliament and the Presidency, describing the move as “wholly improper, and potentially defamatory.”

They questioned why correspondence about academic credentials would be linked to her political service as a Parliamentarian and Deputy Minister.

“Your most recent letter was addressed directly to the Chief of Staff rather than to our client, a step that is both procedurally irregular and suggestive of an attempt to escalate a matter of academic interpretation into a political controversy,” the letter argued.

According to the lawyers, GTEC has no authority to redefine or diminish academic titles conferred by foreign institutions.

They contend that the Commission’s apparent view—that only tenure-track appointments warrant the title “Professor”—is “erroneous, inconsistent with international academic practice, and an overreach of its mandate.”

The letter cited international frameworks such as the UNESCO Global Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications and the Lisbon Recognition Convention, stressing that academic titles should be respected as conferred unless substantial differences are proven.

The lawyers warned that GTEC’s actions risked reducing the Commission to “an ad hoc, slightly vindictive and personality-driven exercise, rather than one grounded in law, evidence, and internationally recognised academic norms.”

Dr. Ayensu Danquah’s legal team has demanded that GTEC disclose the full process behind its conclusions, clarify its statutory authority, and provide evidence that its client was allowed to respond before the damaging correspondence was issued.

They also insist on knowing what mechanisms for appeal or redress exist under the Commission’s framework.

Failure to respond within 14 days, they cautioned, would compel their client to pursue remedies in court, including orders of certiorari and mandamus, as well as declaratory relief to protect her reputation.

The letter has been copied to several offices, including the Chief of Staff, the Minister of Health, the Clerk of Parliament, and the Chairman of the GTEC Board, because GTEC had already involved them in what her lawyers describe as an academic matter that should have been handled discreetly.

Helicopter crash was a coup plot to remove Mahama from power

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has alleged that the August 6 helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom, which claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, was not a mere accident but part of a failed coup attempt targeting President John Dramani Mahama.

Koomson claimed the incident was orchestrated as part of a wider plan to destabilise the Mahama administration.

He argued that the professionalism and experience of the pilots made it difficult to accept that the crash occurred under normal circumstances.

“It was a coup that failed because, despite the training of the pilots, they couldn’t bring it under control,” he alleged.

Koomson urged President Mahama to adopt stringent security measures similar to those implemented by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, during periods when his leadership faced threats.

He recalled that Dr Nkrumah introduced the Preventive Detention Act of 1958 in response to alleged conspiracies against his government.

He further cautioned the President and his advisors to be vigilant against what he described as “evil machinations” by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the party of being behind long-standing plots to destabilise the government.

“Maybe the President is not aware that the crash was a plot to remove him from power.

“The presence of certain individuals in critical positions in government is a risk to the President’s life, and he must do the needful,” he stressed.

Koomson called for a full-scale investigation into the tragedy, insisting that crucial questions remain unanswered.

“How did it occur? Who was in charge? These are questions we cannot overlook.

“This cannot be treated as a mere accident,” he emphasised.

The GFL leader described the incident as particularly alarming given that high-ranking government officials were among the casualties.

“If the Minister of Defence could be targeted and killed, then the President needs to be extra cautious,” he warned.

The helicopter crash claimed the lives of:

Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence

Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, MP for Tamale Central and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology

Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Dr Samuel Sarpong, First National Vice Chairman of the NDC

Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of NADMO

The tragedy has sparked intense public debate, with growing calls for an independent inquiry to establish the true cause of the crash, he concluded.

He spoke in an interview on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

In his address, Torgbi Awusu II conveyed the Awomefia’s greetings and lauded Mr. Tameklo’s sterling contributions to national life, describing him as a source of pride for the Anlo people and the Volta Region.

He highlighted Tameklo’s “remarkable exploits” in defending the rights of individuals facing unjust treatment, his pivotal role as Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress then in opposition, and his ongoing transformative work at the NPA.

“Your track record in law, your bold defence of the vulnerable, and your visionary leadership at the NPA have set you apart as a role model for our people. These accomplishments inspire us, especially our young minds, reinforcing the Anlo tradition of producing leaders of integrity, courage, and service to our nation” Togbi said.

The Awadada also extended a special invitation to Tameklo to grace this year’s Anlo Hogbetsotso Festival, scheduled for the first Saturday in November, assuring him of a warm welcome from the Awomefia and the entire Anlo State.

Responding to the tribute, Tameklo expressed profound gratitude to the chiefs for the honour and the visit and pledged his commitment to supporting the successful organisation of the festival.

“I will do everything to ensure that the Hogbetsotso Festival is organised to the highest standard, underscoring the importance of unity among the chiefs as a foundation for sustained development in the Anlo area, Volta region and Ghana as a whole.”

Schalke 04’s Ghanaian midfielder Christopher Antwi-Adjei was racially abused on Sunday, 17 August 2025, by a home supporter FC Lokomotive Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal first-round tie.

The incident occurred in the 13th minute when Antwi-Adjei went to the touchline to take a throw-in when words were shouted that have no place on a football pitch or anywhere else.

After Antwi-Adjei raised the issue, the referee stopped the match so the home club could make a stadium announcement.

Instead, sections of the home crowd booed Antwi-Adjei with every touch until the final whistle an utterly incomprehensible and disappointing reaction.

The player has reported the incident to the police, who have begun investigations.

In his post-game speech, Antwi-Adjei said: “It’s very disappointing to have to experience something like this in this day and age. It’s not acceptable. I hope this person reflects on their actions.”

Cut prices on old stock to ease consumer pressure – GUTA to traders – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has urged its members to slash prices on old stock to clear goods and make way for new imports. According to the Association, the move will unlock capital, ease costs on the market, and bring relief to consumers.

This comes as the 60-day grace period for price adjustments—introduced following the cedi’s appreciation—has expired.

GUTA’s Public Relations Officer, Joseph Paddy, explained that price stability has now held for more than eight months, well beyond the usual business cycle, and traders who refuse to adjust may lose out.

“This stability has lasted for over eight months now, which is well beyond the usual three-to-four-month business cycle. Typically, when you travel, it takes about a month; shipping your goods takes another month; and clearing can take up to a month as well—so, in all, a three-to-four-month cycle,” he said.

He warned that keeping old or near-expiry stock at inflated prices could push traders out of business.

“We believe that if you are still holding old stock, while new stock has already entered the market, you risk losing out. If you don’t position yourself as a businessperson and continue holding onto old prices, you could run out of business because competitors with new products will reduce their prices,” he cautioned.

On May 14, 2025, GUTA and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) jointly announced a 60-day window for businesses to adjust prices in line with the cedi’s appreciation. The announcement followed a high-level meeting with the Minister for Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, after public pressure mounted for market prices to reflect the stronger currency.

The cedi currently trades at about GH₵10.40 to the dollar. While many goods remain unchanged in price, GUTA and AGI explained that older stock, purchased at higher exchange rates, has delayed adjustments.

GUTA President Joseph Obeng has since urged government to maintain the currency’s stability, assuring that traders will adjust prices as new stock arrives.

GIZ proposes stronger communication to unlock funding for youth start-ups – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

Administrators of local start-up funds supporting youth-led small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are being urged to strengthen their communication strategies to improve access to capital.

The German International Cooperation (GIZ) says that despite numerous interventions from government and the private sector, more awareness is needed to ensure young entrepreneurs can fully access available funding opportunities.

Speaking at the NextGen Opportunities Forum 2025 in Accra on Friday, August 15, Emmanuel Mumuni, Component Manager at GIZ, emphasized that both fund managers and start-ups need to be more proactive.

“There are many opportunities, but not enough noise about them. On the other hand, we also have start-ups that are not actively seeking these opportunities. When we run programs, we often find the same groups of businesses applying repeatedly, even though there’s a much larger pool of start-ups not engaging,” he said.

Mumuni encouraged fund administrators to expand their outreach through diverse platforms while urging start-ups to take initiative in connecting with funding bodies.

For his part, Nabil Ahmed Rufai, Media and Logistics Coordinator for the NextGen Opportunities Forum, explained that the annual event brings together Africa’s most promising young leaders, entrepreneurs, creatives, and change-makers to bridge the gap between ideas and opportunities.

He added that the forum forms part of a decade-long legacy of platforms founded by Emmanuel Leslie Addae, including TEDxLabone, TEDxAccra, and Africa Dialogues.

Ghana Weightlifting Federation president calls for increased funding – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation and Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Shaib, has called for increased investment in weightlifting to boost the sport’s development in the country.

He made the appeal at the opening ceremony of the 2025 African Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship, which Ghana is hosting from August 15 to 22.

Mr. Shaib expressed optimism that hosting the continental competition would not only raise the profile of weightlifting but also inspire more young athletes to take up the sport.

“This championship has been long in the making, and we believe it presents an opportunity to attract more people to appreciate weightlifting. In Ghana, one of the least financed sports is weightlifting. Public attention is largely on football, but we hope this platform will encourage more athletes to get involved,” he said.

The week-long event has brought together top junior and youth weightlifters from across Africa, competing for honours and continental recognition.

IFEST calls for targeted solutions to curb rising school riots – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Executive Director of the Institute of Education Studies (IFEST), Dr. Peter Anti, has called for a more targeted approach to addressing riots in senior high schools nationwide.

His comments follow the indefinite closure of the Bolgatanga Technical Institute (BOTECH), where student riots resulted in the destruction of the school’s library and the senior housemaster’s office.

Following the incident, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on August 7, ordered a comprehensive review of security arrangements in schools nationwide. The directive comes amid a spate of violent incidents that have left students dead and communities shaken.

The minister also expressed concern about the widespread reliance on untrained personnel, often referred to as “watchmen,” to provide security in schools.

“Even our concept of a ‘watchman’ in educational institutions needs to be revisited. Do we just pick anyone and label them school security—with no training in policing or even basic security practices? We need to review this so we can foster a safer school environment for both students and teachers,” he said.

But Dr. Anti, speaking in an interview with Citi News on Sunday, August 17, argued that responses should be based on careful profiling rather than blanket solutions.

“When issues like this happen, we should avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. I heard the minister say there is a need to increase security on our campuses, which is good, but we need to go further and profile these disturbances so solutions match the specific challenges in each school.

“Some schools need external security, others require better-trained internal security, and some may benefit from periodic searches. More importantly, many schools need personnel development in areas like conflict resolution, counselling, and student disciplinary handling,” he explained.

In recent weeks, several violent incidents have rocked second-cycle institutions.

On July 31, a 15-year-old first-year student of Kinbu Senior High School, Addib Alhassan, was fatally stabbed during an altercation reportedly sparked by a classroom argument. He was rushed to the Adabraka Polyclinic and later transferred to the Ridge Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This tragedy followed two separate shooting incidents at Nalerigu Senior High School and Bawku Senior High School, both involving students.

The Ministry of Education has pledged to work with stakeholders to strengthen security in schools through the deployment of professionally trained personnel.

Cedi strengthens as fiscal discipline, debt deals drive Ghana’s recovery – World Bank – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Ghana cedi has firmed up on the exchange market in 2025, driven by tighter fiscal discipline and progress on debt restructuring.

This is according to the World Bank’s 9th Ghana Economic Update, which says the local currency’s rebound reflects stronger macroeconomic fundamentals.

Inflation, which stayed stubbornly above 20 percent throughout 2024, has begun to ease this year.

Ghana’s headline inflation rate fell to 12.1% in July 2025, down from 13.7% in June, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline and the lowest level recorded since October 2021, reinforcing investor confidence.

The World Bank points to spending restraint and the enforcement of new fiscal rules in the first half of 2025 as key signals of renewed discipline.

Debt restructuring has also provided relief. With the Eurobond exchange completed in late 2024 and an MoU signed with official creditors in January, Ghana is edging closer to restoring debt sustainability.

On July 25, 2025 Ghana and France have signed a bilateral agreement formalizing debt relief as part of Ghana’s ongoing external debt restructuring programme.

Talks with commercial creditors are still underway, but the Bank insists the trajectory is positive.

The external sector has added momentum, with gold exports, remittances, and stronger FDI flows lifting the current account into surplus and rebuilding reserves.

Still, the recovery faces headwinds. The World Bank projects GDP growth to slow to 3.9 percent in 2025 as fiscal consolidation tightens, before rebounding to 5 percent by 2028 on the back of private consumption, remittances, and new oil production.

The Bank warns that sustaining this momentum will require consistent revenue mobilisation, tighter expenditure controls, and deep reforms in troubled state enterprises such as COCOBOD and ECG.

In a move aimed at boosting Ghana’s growing digital and creative economy, the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) has received a consignment of desktop computers from electronics giant, Electroland Ghana Limited.

The donation is intended to support budding content creators enrolled in NEIP’s innovation and digital skills programs.

According to officials, the laptops, equipped with creative software and internet-enabled tools, will be distributed to selected young entrepreneurs working in areas such as digital storytelling, video production, podcasting, graphic design, and social media marketing.

Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of NEIP, Eric Adjei expressed gratitude to Electroland for what he described as a timely and impactful intervention.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to empowering young people. These desktop computers are not just machines; they’re tools of expression, innovation and economic transformation,” the CEO stated.

He noted that many talented youth across the country lack access to the basic digital tools needed to develop and monetize their skills. The donation, he said, would help bridge this gap and unlock new opportunities for Ghanaian creatives.

Meanwhile, Head of marketing and Media Relations at Electroland Ghana Limited stated that this is the company’s dedication to youth development and innovation in Ghana.

“We believe that every young person deserves access to the tools that can change their future. By supporting NEIP, we are investing in the future of content creation and entrepreneurship in Ghana.”

Electroland, known for distributing electronics and appliances such as TCL, Midea, and Nasco products, said it plans to explore more avenues for contributing to national development through technology.

NEIP, under the Ministry of Youth Development has been instrumental in promoting entrepreneurship across Ghana, particularly among youth and women. Through training, funding and incubation programs, the organization has supported thousands of startups and innovators nationwide.

This latest initiative is expected to amplify the voices of content creators across regions, especially those from underserved communities.

Adjei indicated that recipients of the desktop computers will also receive ongoing mentorship and access to collaborative spaces to enhance their productivity.

The two organizations hinted at future collaborations with a shared vision of positioning Ghana as a hub for digital innovation and creative entrepreneurship.

“This is only the beginning,” said the NEIP CEO. “We are calling on other corporate partners to join us in building a future where no creative mind is left behind.”

Berekum Kingmakers select candidate to occupy Omanhene stool – Krontrihene

The stool became vacant two years after the death of the late Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II The stool became vacant two years after the death of the late Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II

The Berekum Traditional Council in the Bono Region says the Kingmakers have successfully selected the rightful candidate to occupy the Berekum Paramount stool.

The stool became vacant two years after the death of the late Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II, the Paramount Chief of the Berekum Traditional Area, on June 9, 2023, at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

He was known in private life as Dr Leonard Ofori, a German trained medical practitioner.

Osabarima Nana Agyeman Asomah Sabi II, the Krontrihene (sub-chief) of the Berekum Traditional Council, said the rightful candidate would be outdoored soon and urged the people to remain calm.

Osabarima Nana Agyeman Asomah Sabi II, also the Chief of Senase in the traditional area, disclosed this when he interacted with some chiefs, queens and a section of the public at a dinner, he organised to mark his 70th birthday celebration at Senase.

He urged the chiefs and people of the area to also cooperate for the subsequent enstoolment of the new paramount chief.

Osabarima Sabi II emphasized that the kingmakers strictly adhered to the culture and tradition of the people and followed the due process in selecting the rightful candidate and urged the youth to also respect the decision of the kingmakers.

He said the traditional council and the kingmakers, in particular, were not in any position to give-in to influences in the selection of the qualified candidates.

Osabarima Sabi II indicated that chieftaincy disputes only retarded the progressive development, saying now that the rightful candidate had been selected, there was the need for the feuding factions to bury their differences for the purpose of peace and social cohesion.

He also urged the people to be interested in the development of the area, instead of fanning traditional conflicts that potentially thwarted progressive growth.

Osabarima Sabi II recollected an incident where some unidentified people set his private residence ablaze three years ago due to the chieftaincy dispute.

However, the Krontrihene stressed the need for the people to strengthen and protect the prevailing peace of the area, urging them to forge ahead in unity and contribute to the holistic development of the traditional area.

Nigeria apprehends top globally-wanted Ansaru terrorists responsible for several atrocities

Security officials in Nigeria have achieved a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism with the apprehension of the leaders of Ansaru and Mahmuda.

Addressing the press on Saturday, August 16, 2025, the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, announced that the two terrorists, who were on the wanted list of Nigeria, the US, UK, and UN, were captured in an operation conducted between May and July 2025.

He disclosed that the two were arrested in a high-risk, intelligence-led, counter-terrorism operation.

They are leaders of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, commonly known as ANSARU, Nigeria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate.

Ribadu stated that the two men have been responsible for orchestrating numerous terrorist attacks against Nigeria over the past years.

“The first is Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar), the self-styled Emir of ANSARU. He is the coordinator of various terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria. He is also the mastermind of several high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to finance terrorism over the years.

“The second is Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda), Abu Bara’s proclaimed Chief of Staff and Deputy. He is the leader of the so-called “Mahmudawa” cell hiding out in and around the Kainji National Park, straddling Niger and Kwara States up to Benin Republic. Mamuda trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under foreign jihadist instructors from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, specialising in weapons handling and IED fabrication, he said.

The National Security Adviser added “These two men have been on Nigeria’s most-wanted list for years. They jointly spearheaded multiple attacks on civilians, security forces, and critical infrastructure.

“Their operations include the 2022 Kuje prison break, the attack on the Niger uranium facility, the 2013 abduction of French engineer Francis Collomp in Katsina, and the May 1, 2019 kidnapping of Alhaji Musa Umar Uba (Magajin Garin Daura). They were also behind the abduction of the Emir of Wawa and they maintain active links with terrorist groups across the Maghreb, particularly in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.

“The two men, who are wanted internationally, are currently in custody.

“The capture of Abu Bara and Mallam Mamuda, the group’s leader and deputy commander, respectively, marks one of the most significant achievements to date in our ongoing effort to rid Nigeria of the threat of terrorism. The successful decapitation of the leadership of this dangerous franchise marks the most decisive blow against ANSARU since its inception. This strike has effectively dismantled its central command while paving the path for the complete annihilation of the group”, Ribadu stated.

He concluded that “Over the years, Ansaru entrenched itself in both urban sleeper cells and forest enclaves across several cities in northern Nigeria and in forest-based enclaves, particularly around Kainji National Park, straddling Niger and Kwara States, as well as the Benin Republic”.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, has expressed confidence in winning the constituency’s by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.

The Electoral Commission declared the seat vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

Speaking to journalists in Akwatia on Sunday, August 17, Mr. Bediako said the NDC was well-positioned to secure victory.

“We are moving through the towns and communities to spread our message. Today is a market day in Akwatia, and fortunately, our party office is close to the market. We are starting there to engage the people and help them understand the need to vote for me and the NDC so that together we can drive development in Akwatia,” he said.

Govt to provide counselling for families of helicopter crash victims – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The government has assured counselling support for the families and children of those who lost their lives in the recent helicopter crash.

Eight people perished in the line of duty, plunging the nation into mourning.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, speaking to the media on the sidelines of a thanksgiving service for the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Wing Commander Peter Baafemi Anala on Sunday, August 18, 2025, said her ministry will recommend counselling services to help the affected families cope with their loss.

“If ever there was a time the Comforter comes closer to us, this is the time, and we pray for the families that they continue to enjoy the peace of the Lord. We do counselling, especially through the Social Welfare Department, but it is not something we impose on people.

“Families have their own ways of healing, so when they reach out to us, we assist them. As we continue to engage with them, and the need arises, we can suggest or recommend support, whether through a social worker or a psychologist, because this is not easy. It is something we provide, but we do not impose,” she said.

On Friday, August 15, an interfaith funeral service was held in honour of the eight persons who died in the August 6 helicopter crash.

The victims included Minister for Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.

The three crew members—Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—also lost their lives in the crash. The three officers were posthumously promoted by President Mahama on Friday.

GFL boss alleges Adansi Akrofuom helicopter crash was part of a plot against President Mahama

0

The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others

The presence of certain individuals in critical positions in government is a risk to the President’s life, and he must do the needful,” he stressed.

Koomson called for a full-scale investigation into the tragedy, insisting that crucial questions remain unanswered.

“How did it occur? Who was in charge? These are questions we cannot overlook.

This cannot be treated as a mere accident,” he emphasised.

Black Stars striker Antoine Semenyo Black Stars striker Antoine Semenyo

The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has condemned the racial abuse against Black Stars striker Antoine Semenyo in England.

The abuse occurred on Friday night when Liverpool hosted AFC Bournemouth at Anfield in the opening fixture of the 2025/26 English Premier League season.

Today, the PFAG, in a statement, has condemned the abuse, assuring Antoine Semenyo of their readiness to assist and support him.

“On behalf of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), we stand in unwavering solidarity with Antoine Semenyo following the racist abuse he endured during Bournemouth’s Premier League opener at Anfield on 15 August 2025.

“PFAG unequivocally condemns racism in all its forms. Racist behavior has no place in football—or in society. We commend the swift action by Merseyside Police, who arrested a 47-year-old suspect on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense, and the ongoing investigation by the Premier League and other authorities,” PFAG said in its statement shared on Facebook.

It added, “To Antoine: your courage continues to inspire. PFAG stands with you, ready to offer any assistance or support you may need. We also use this moment to urge football clubs, governing bodies, fans, and communities to continue working together to eradicate racism from the beautiful game once and for all.”

In the statement, the Association said it admires how Semenyo responded, demonstrating extraordinary strength and composure by continuing to play and scoring two brilliant goals against Liverpool.

South Africa row over army chief’s pro-Iran comments

0

South Africa’s army chief has been criticised after he reportedly pledged military and political support to Iran during a recent visit to the country.

Members of South Africa’s governing coalition have accused General Rudzani Maphwanya of “reckless grandstanding”, while President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed he would meet the general to discuss his “ill-advised” trip.

The row comes as South Africa navigates tense relations with the US, which has taken exception to the country’s ties with Iran, among other issues.

The Democratic Alliance, part of the South African government, called for Gen Maphwanya to be “court-martialled”.

It said his comments had gone “beyond military-to-military discussions and entered the realm of foreign policy”.

Gen Maphwenya’s trip was aimed at strengthening military cooperation but during his meeting with his Iranian counterparts, he said that the two countries had common goals, and always stood “alongside the oppressed and defenceless people of the world”, according to Iranian publication Tehran Times.

He also took aim at Israel over the continued war in Gaza as he reiterated support for the Palestinian people and told officials his visit “carries a political message” from Ramaphosa’s administration.

The South African government has distanced itself from these comments.

The defence department labelled them “unfortunate”, while the foreign affairs ministry said they “do not represent the government’s official foreign policy stance”.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the president didn’t know about the trip or sanction it.

“The visit was ill-advised and more so, the expectation is that the general should have been a lot more circumspect with the comments he makes,” Mr Magwenya told reporters during a briefing on Thursday.

Gen Maphwanya has since returned home, Mr Magwenya confirmed.

South Africa’s strong ties with Iran have been a bone of contention with the US and was one of the reasons relations between the two nations soured earlier this year.

US President Donald Trump, in an executive order cutting off aid to South Africa, accused Africa’s largest economy of “reinvigorating” relations with Iran – an implacable foe of the US.

Trump also falsely accused Ramaphosa’s government of persecuting white people and condemned it for bringing a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

According to the think-tank the Institute for Security Studies, South Africa’s relationship with Iran dates back to 1995, when a joint commission of cooperation was formed.

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound appreciation to Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, for his show of solidarity following the recent helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region that claimed eight lives.

Mahama commended President Bio for personally extending condolences on behalf of the people of Sierra Leone and the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) community during Ghana’s period of national mourning.

He described the gesture as a testament to the strong bond between Ghana and Sierra Leone, as well as the spirit of unity that binds the ECOWAS sub-region.

The tragic crash, which occurred earlier this month, claimed the lives of five government officials and three military officers, plunging the nation into grief.

WBI Commissions Health Kiosk in Adidome to Boost Preventive Care

0

The Wellness Bridge Initiative (WBI), a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving healthcare access and promoting preventive health services in Ghana, has commissioned a Health Kiosk in Adidome, Central Tongu District.

The facility, part of a community-based preventive health project, will provide free blood pressure and blood sugar testing to help reduce stroke, diabetes, and heart disease through early detection and referrals. Trained attendants will check vital health indicators and refer at-risk individuals to health facilities.

The pilot site was launched in Adidome due to its strategic location, with plans to extend the project to five other subdistricts in Central Tongu before scaling it up nationwide.

Togbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V, Dufia of Adidome and WBI Founder, stressed the need for urgent action against rising hypertension and diabetes cases. Citing a March 2023 WHO report, he noted that 46% of adults with hypertension are unaware of their condition, less than 42% receive treatment, and only about 21% have it under control.

Data from the Central Tongu District Health Directorate shows hypertension cases more than doubled from 1,121 in 2022 to 2,484 in 2024. “This is why we initiated the Health Kiosk Project—so our people can check their blood sugar and blood pressure for free, and be linked to early care,” he said.

WBI also plans to promote nutritional literacy, establish fitness clubs, and intensify community health education. Togbe Agyeman appealed for support from donor agencies, corporate bodies, and philanthropists to sustain the initiative.

Dr Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, Volta Regional Representative of the National Development Planning Commission and Chairman of the event, hailed the project as a major step in expanding access to health services, urging residents to use the facility and the District Assembly to ensure its sustainability.

Central Tongu District Health Director, Mr Baba Awuni, called the kiosk a “game changer” for monitoring key health indicators, facilitating chronic disease follow-up, and serving as a referral point. District Chief Executive Mr Dodzi Addison Mornyuie pledged to mobilise resources for its upkeep.

Shatta Wale never starts attacks, he only reacts – Sammy Flex

Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale

Public relations professional and broadcaster, Samuel Atuobi Baah, popularly known in Showbiz as Sammy Flex, has defended dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, insisting that his controversial outbursts on social media are always reactions rather than unprovoked attacks.

Speaking on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy on Starr 103.5 FM on Saturday, August 16, Sammy Flex explained that many critics judge Shatta Wale solely by his fiery responses without considering the provocation that triggers them.

“You always judge Shatta Wale based on reaction, but you don’t judge the cause,” he stressed. “Shatta Wale never started one. He’s always been minding his business. Someone will go and do it, and when he responds with equal energy, people call him bad.”

Sammy Flex noted that in every instance, Shatta Wale’s response follows something said or done against him, often by fellow industry players on media platforms.

“It’s not most. In fact, all the time,” he emphasised when asked if Shatta Wale’s online confrontations are reactions to attacks.

He further explained that Shatta Wale’s critics fail to recognise the impact of negative remarks made about him, which often prompt his emotional responses.

“Sometimes, he may even be asleep, then wake up and see people saying things that will make him feel bad. If he gives back that energy, you say Shatta Wale is bad. But why are you not bad? Because you started it,” Sammy Flex argued.

According to him, Shatta Wale cannot simply wake up and attack anyone without cause.

“Shatta cannot just wake up and start talking about Feeling Daddy or Uncle Fred. No, not with him,” he maintained.

Sammy Flex, who also works as Media and Public Relations Manager for Shatta Movement, urged the industry and the public, to measure both cause and reaction fairly when discussing Shatta Wale’s conduct.

Helicopter crash was preventable; allow regional appointees to represent the President

The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others

Peace Watch Ghana, a registered non-profit organization advocating for peace and security, has stated that the August 6 helicopter crash was a preventable disaster.

Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, the organization’s Executive Director, argued that the presence of the Lands and Natural Resources Minister and the Regional Minister was sufficient to represent the President at the event.

She noted that authorities should minimise the number of appointees attending state events to cut costs and ensure the safety of officials.

Daniels stressed that there was no need for the Defence Minister and other personnel to have traveled to the location, as the two ministers already in attendance could have adequately represented the President.

She proposed that, as part of their reforms, authorities should adopt an approach where the District Chief Executive, Regional Minister, or sector Minister represents the President at functions specific to their respective areas.

“These were men and women appointed to serve us, and they died tragically. I strongly believe these individuals would have survived if they had not attended the event,” she said.

Daniels added that the tragic incident should serve as a lesson, not only for state events but also for political campaigns, where large entourages often follow a single candidate.

“It does not make sense that everybody wants to follow the President everywhere,” she stated, emphasizing that allowing appointees in their respective areas to attend events would prevent disasters and preserve the lives of officials.

She urged the Chief of Staff to address this issue, noting that a more streamlined approach to official travel would help prevent future tragedies.

‘It’s very disappointing’ – Christopher Antwi-Adjei reacts to racial abuse in Germany

Speaking to Bild after the match, Christopher Antwi-Adjei said what happened was very disappointing Speaking to Bild after the match, Christopher Antwi-Adjei said what happened was very disappointing

Ghanaian attacker Christopher Antwi-Adjei shared his disappointment on Sunday August 17, 2025, after suffering racial abuse during the DFB Pokal match between FC Lokomotive Leipzig and his side, Schalke 04.

The incident occurred in the 13th minute when Antwi-Adjei went to the touchline to take a throw-in when words were shouted that have no place on a football pitch or anywhere else.

After Antwi-Adjei raised the issue, the referee stopped the match so the home club could make a stadium announcement.

Instead, sections of the home crowd booed Antwi-Adjei with every touch until the final whistle.

Speaking to Bild after the match, Christopher Antwi-Adjei said what happened was very disappointing.

“I didn’t hear any nice words. They were racist insults, which have no place here at any time. ‘Fucking nigger’ was called. I stayed cool, calm, and signalled to the linesman what had happened.

“You don’t have to tolerate everything, especially when you’re on the football pitch and representing your club. That has no place here. It’s very disappointing. We’ve advanced. That’s what counts, or rather, should count,” he said.

Reports in Germany indicates that the racial abuse incident was reported to the police and an investigation is underway to identify the fan.

What Clara Arthur’s return as GhIPSS CEO means for Ghana

0

Starting September 1, 2025, Clara B. Arthur will resume as the CEO of Ghana’s Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) Limited. GhIPSS is a subsidiary of the Bank of Ghana. It serves as the country’s primary payment infrastructure provider.

Arthur’s appointment takes effect two months after her former boss, Archie Hesse, stepped down after 13 years of leadership.

For GhIPSS and Ghana’s broader digital payments ambitions, this is more than a personnel change. It is a pivotal moment that blends continuity with the promise of a refreshed strategic direction.

Arthur returns, but with a broadened perspective

Clara Arthur is no stranger to GhIPSS. Between 2015 and 2020, she served as General Manager for Projects and Business Development. Whilst under Hesse’s leadership, she helped develop and spearhead key projects like the GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP), and heralded mobile money interoperability (2018) across telcos and banks.

Arthur brings more than two decades of experience in banking and digital financial services. Her résumé includes senior roles at Ecobank (Head of ATM and Card Technology) and Fidelity Bank (Head of E-banking), along with international work as a Digital Financial Services Consultant at CGAP and Remittance Expert at UNCDF. She holds a BA in Law and History from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and an MSc in Finance and Administration from Thames Valley University.

However, her appointment as GhIPSS CEO follows a trend of appointing former Project and Business Development Leads at the company, given the existing familiarity with the work required as CEO. For instance, Hesse occupied that same role for four years before stepping up to lead GhIPSS as CEO.

In her first public remarks following the announcement, Arthur described the move as a return to familiar ground: “It is more of a return for me. I look forward to working alongside this talented team to continue the legacy of GhIPSS.” Her appointment was confirmed by the Bank of Ghana, with Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama signalling her ability to bring a “fresh perspective and strategic vision” to the institution’s next chapter.

A changing landscape

Arthur steps into this role at a time when Ghana’s payment infrastructure is both mature and under pressure to evolve. GhIPSS-run systems like e-zwich, gh-link, and GIP form the backbone of the country’s interoperable ecosystem. But despite their technical robustness, they have not achieved the same visibility or mainstream adoption as international networks.

As Tech Labari, a leading tech publication from Ghana, points out, many GhIPSS products remain underutilised. E-zwich, launched as a biometric card-based payment solution, was ahead of its time but still has limited usage among the general population. Gh-link, Ghana’s domestic EMV card scheme, similarly competes with global giants like Visa and Mastercard with only modest traction.

Arthur’s challenge is not simply to maintain these systems, which she helped build, but to reposition them. She will be expected to infuse customer focus, increase relevance, and broaden the accessibility of Ghana’s existing payment infrastructure. Her experience across both local banks and international development agencies suggests a unique ability to bridge the gap between public infrastructure and private sector innovation.

The Hesse legacy that Arthur inherits

Hesse’s job-to-be-done was different. He transformed the organisation from a subsidised entity into a financially self-sustaining national asset.

His tenure began in 2007 as General Manager for Projects and Business Development, and his impact was far-reaching. Hesse led the rollout of Ghana’s national biometric card system (e-zwich), established the Cheque Codeline Clearing (CCC) and Automated Clearing House (GACH) systems, and launched gh-link—the country’s first domestic card scheme.

In 2015, he spearheaded the creation of GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP), which brought real-time interbank transfers to Ghana. This paved the way for mobile money interoperability (MMI) in 2018 and culminated in the launch of GhanaPay in 2022, a shared mobile money platform operated by licensed banks. Under his leadership, GhIPSS played a central role in advancing the Bank of Ghana’s cash-lite agenda, aimed at reducing dependency on physical cash.

This is the legacy Arthur inherits—and the foundation on which she is expected to build.

Reimagining GhIPSS as a platform for innovation

If Hesse’s legacy was building infrastructure, Arthur’s may be defined by platform enablement. Ghana’s fintech ecosystem has grown rapidly, with startups, telcos, and banks innovating in digital wallets, credit scoring, and embedded payments. Yet GhIPSS remains the connective tissue—a regulated utility that ensures interoperability and transaction integrity.

For Ghana’s next phase of digital growth, GhIPSS must move from being a quiet enabler to a visible partner in innovation. That may mean rethinking pricing models, opening APIs to developers, expanding cross-border settlement capabilities, or simplifying user journeys on existing products.

GhIPSS is at a turning point, one where relevance will be earned not just through technical robustness but by delivering platforms that feel essential to everyday Ghanaians and digitally native businesses.

The Bottom Line

Clara Arthur’s return to GhIPSS signals more than a routine leadership change. It’s a deliberate move by the Bank of Ghana to continue modernising the country’s payment systems, while introducing fresh energy into an institution that underpins much of the financial ecosystem. With a legacy of sound infrastructure behind her, Arthur now faces the challenge of delivering innovation, scale, and inclusion in equal measure.

Ghana’s next decade of digital payments may well be defined by how GhIPSS evolves under her leadership. “Together we will continue to drive meaningful impact, embrace new opportunities and shape a future in the payments industry that we can all be proud of,” says Arthur.

Afrik Allianz To Lead The Next Wave Of Global Investments In Africa

Afrik Allianz a collaborative network between airlines and airports operating in Africa, powered by Goldstar Air, will spearhead the next wave of investment in Africa through global food production, leveraging Africa's diverse climate zones, arable land, and natural resources to cultivate crops, feeding industries worldwide and driving economic growth to drive innovations, and development across the continent. This will cement the airlines in the alliance to position themselves as a leading force in shaping Africa's future.
Afrik Allianz a collaborative network between airlines and airports operating in Africa, powered by Goldstar Air, will spearhead the next wave of investment in Africa through global food production, leveraging Africa’s diverse climate zones, arable land, and natural resources to cultivate crops, feeding industries worldwide and driving economic growth to drive innovations, and development across the continent. This will cement the airlines in the alliance to position themselves as a leading force in shaping Africa’s future.

United States and Ghanaian registered company Goldstar Air, a private international airline with an issued Air Carrier Licence (ACL/N-SCH No. 0239) from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to operate passenger and cargo flights across West Africa and intercontinental routes, with no liabilities as at today and incentives secured from some major airports worldwide, has set its sights on the liberalization of Air Transport in Africa for socioeconomic development through its Afrik Allianz initiative. This initiative will change the face of Africa, and the rise of Africa will change the face of aviation across the globe.

Afrik Allianz and Insurance initiative spearheaded by Goldstar Air, aims to create an alliance of African airlines to boost intra-regional trade and investments. The initiative is strategically positioning itself as a transformational force, poised to lead the next wave of global investments in Africa, that will significantly tap into the projected Africa Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $16.3 Trillion by the year 2050. This emerging initiative should compel all African airlines to collaborate to overcome the challenges they face, as the continent has not yet managed to unleash the full potential of aviation.

Afrik Allianz is a strategic move to enhance connectivity, streamline operations, offer travelers more options on the African continent, and identify the potential benefits of collaboration. Members will collaborate in resource sharing, including lounges, terminal space, ground handling services, common marketing programs, maintenance bases, and IT systems, which will reduce overall operational costs. The collaboration effort aims to ensure a consistent level of service while maintaining financial independence and brand identity for member carriers, all while creating millions of job opportunities for the teeming African youth.

Afrik Insurance is a subsidiary of the Afrik allianz that will handle the aviation insurance needs of members, involving large insurance coverages and reinsurance. The Insurance department will begin with insurance of members aircraft that will initially fly within the African continent and later to other continents. The insurance will cover the requirements that are needed and are helpful to owners, operators, pilots, renters, students, and flight schools where there is a risk to life.

Goldstar Air’s vision extends to operating over one hundred aircraft and generating sustainable job opportunities for Ghanaians. This will connect African businesses and capitalize on the opportunities presented by the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with a staggering forty-four (44) million Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) across Africa. The continent possesses the resources to make significant economic strides, and the Africa Continental Free Trade Area aims to eliminate trade barriers, representing a significant opportunity for Africa to assert itself on the global economic stage.

Speaking during day one of the 3i Africa Summit in Accra, the Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, Wamkele Mene, spoke on the need for businesses to leverage fintech to maximize outputs. He underscored the importance of governments across the African continent deploying all available technological resources to propel growth and sustainability in their respective economies.

Liberalizing Africa Air Transport Through Afrik Allianz
Liberalizing Africa air transport through Afrik Allianz leading the next wave of investments will significantly boost the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), creating a unified market and propelling the continent towards its $16.3 Trillion growth target by 2050, fostering economic integration and development across Africa.

The aviation sector in Africa holds immense potential for growth, fueled by economic development, increasing demand for air travel, and initiatives like the Africa Continental Free Trade Area. Investments in infrastructure, regulatory reform, and the expansion of low-cost carrier networks will be critical to unlocking the full potential of Africa’s aviation sector. As the African economy continues to grow and integrate, aviation will certainly play an increasingly important role in fostering economic development and improving connectivity across the continent. This will remain dependent on how the industry embraces the need to change.

The aviation industry supports 87.7 million jobs worldwide and contributes $3.5 Trillion (4.1%) of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). If aviation were a country, it would rank 17th in size by GDP, equivalent to the economies of Indonesia and the Netherlands. In 2024, the tourism industry also contributed $10.9 Trillion (10%) of the world’s GDP.

Boeing Company sees Africa as one the most promising markets in terms of economic and business growth. Blessed with vast natural resources and a young population, the opportunity for growth of the African aerospace industry is significant and partnership with Africa is much more than selling and supporting airplanes, it includes regional safety and connectivity initiatives, industrial partnerships, sustainability and community outreach.

Boeing has been a cornerstone of Africa’s aviation sector for over 75 years, with more than 60 airline customers operating around 500 Boeing airplanes across the continent. The flexibility and efficiency of models like the 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX have significantly contributed to the growth of the African airline fleet, Boeing forecasts a demand for 1,205 new airplane deliveries and 76,000 aviation personnel in Africa over the next 20 years, highlighting the continent’s potential for significant growth in passenger and cargo traffic.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Afrik Allianz, the Africa continent is currently undergoing major transitions across technology, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, digital finance. It is projected to be the 8th largest global economy by the year 2050 and home to a quarter of the world’s population of 2.5 billion people, with a projected purchasing power of over $16 Trillion. Afrik Allianz presents itself as a visionary catalyst for sustainable, inclusive growth. Africa, with its vast natural resources, youthful population, growing middle class, and improving governance, has become a compelling destination for global investment. However, much of its potential remains untapped due to historical underinvestment and perception challenges. Afrik Allianz recognizes these barriers not as deterrents but as opportunities for innovation, scale, and reform.

Afrik Allianz’s emergence coincides with a shifting paradigm in global finance and investment priorities. Traditional markets in the West are experiencing diminishing returns, demographic aging, and socio-political turbulence, prompting investors to look southward. Africa’s economic resilience, demonstrated in its rapid rebound post-COVID-19, growing innovation ecosystems, and regional integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), has captured global attention. Afrik Allianz views this convergence of global investor appetite and African opportunity as a moment of historic significance. Rather than adopting a transactional approach, it is creating a new investment ethos rooted in long-term partnership, ethical engagement, local value chains, and environmental sustainability.

The Afrik Allianz’s Liberalization of Air Transport in Africa is intended to stimulate increased trade volume, investment, and business activities on the African continent, with a focus on massive job creation, poverty reduction and foreign exchange earnings. Its goal is to make African airlines financial instruments of Africa. Afrik Allianz initiative is rooted in the belief that Africa, with its vast potential and untapped resources, will become a global model for how tourism, conservation, trade, investment, and community empowerment can work hand in hand to create a brighter future for all.

Commercial aviation is a key driver of global economic prosperity and provides the only rapid worldwide transportation network, making it essential for global businesses. It fosters economic growth, creates jobs, and facilitates international trade and tourism. In 2023, commercial aviation accounted for 5% of the United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP), equivalent to $1.37 Trillion. United States airlines operate more than 26,000 flights daily, carrying 2.6 million passengers to and from nearly 80 countries, and transporting 61,000 tons of cargo to and from more than 220 countries. This solid foundation inspires Afrik Allianz to provide great flights to connect Africa, and beyond.

Afrik Allianz and Insurance will facilitate intra-regional trade and regional integration through the movement of goods, services, and people across Africa and beyond. With over one hundred and twenty-one (121) airports within Africa and connections to other continents, the alliance aims to foster multimodal transportation and connectivity, as Airports Council International (ACI) World forecasts passenger traffic in Africa to reach 261 million in 2025. This initiative will be an opportunity for member countries to get involved and make it a reality to sustain easy movements.

Afrik Allianz members will benefit significantly from insurance policy arrangements, provided there are minimal claims. Additionally, the alliance will arrange “fleet policies” to cover all aircraft owned or operated by its members. Underwriting profits can be utilized as indemnities or guarantees for purchasing additional aircraft, further benefiting the local insurance sector in Africa.

Afrik Insurance’s financial guarantee will provide contractual guarantees to member airlines for the acquisition of more aircraft. It will maintain joint legal ownership of the asset at inception and throughout the duration of the contract or establish a back-to-back arrangement with a third party that also holds joint legal ownership of the asset over the life of the contract.

The Afrik Allianz Initiative is a call to action for governments, businesses, communities, and individuals to come together and work toward a common goal. By supporting this initiative, you are not only contributing to Africa’s transformation but also helping to create a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world.

Participating Afrik Allianz airlines will implement mutually agreed commercial policies, coordinate scheduled flights, and ensure high quality of service and security standards. At the same time, they will maintain a high degree of financial independence and preserve their brand identities.

Afrik Allianz members may also enter into other forms of partnership, such as codeshare agreements or joint ventures with airlines outside the alliance. Member carriers can expand their networks without investing in new aircraft. Instead, they can offer new destinations and longer routes to their passengers by connecting with existing partner flights.

The Afrik Allianz members will maintain lower operational costs by sharing resources and key facilities such as lounges, terminal space, ground handling services, maintenance bases, and common marketing programs and IT systems. This collaboration will reduce overall costs while still guaranteeing a consistent level of service.

Afrik Allianz will stay updated on the latest airline industry trends, technologies, and strategies. Regular training sessions and seminars will be held to update and empower members. These training programs will build the capacity and capability of aviation professionals, ensuring they thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.

Members of Afrik Allianz will collaborate to maintain customer satisfaction and offer passengers a broader choice of destinations and flights. This will be particularly important for business travelers, who often operate under tight schedules and complex itineraries with multiple connections. By coordinating flight schedules and ensuring a seamless travel experience, Afrik Allianz will reduce waiting and transfer times between flights, manage baggage handling efficiently, and rebook passengers or provide alternative travel arrangements in case of delays or cancellations.

Afrik Allianz members will operate individual frequent flyer programs. However, passengers who join a member airline’s program will be empowered to earn and redeem miles across the entire network. Frequent flyers will enjoy several benefits in return for their loyalty, including elite status, preferred seating, greater access to upgrades, and enhanced recognition from all member airlines. Another perk which our frequent flyers will enjoy include early boarding, except for Business Class passengers and families with children and potential complimentary upgrades at the carrier’s discretion, such as access to exit rows or upgrades to the next cabin.

Afrik Allianz has positioned itself as a premium yet cost-effective carrier, ensuring that passengers enjoy a comfortable journey without breaking the bank. By offering competitive pricing, Afrik Allianz will allow travelers from all walks of life to access high-quality air travel. The affordability of Afrik Allianz great flights will make it possible for students, professionals, and families to explore new destinations and experience the convenience of air travel. Frequent promotions and discounts will further enhance accessibility, allowing passengers to save while enjoying premium services.

Goldstar Air Is Set To Become One Of The Main Tails Of Afrik Allianz
Goldstar Air is set to become one of the main tails of Afrik Allianz and drive air connectivity across Africa, playing a pivotal role in achieving the $16.3 Trillion trade investment target by 2050, fostering economic growth and development.

Economic development is another significant outcome of the next wave initiative. A well-connected Africa will attract more investors, businesses, and tourists, leading to increased economic activity across various sectors. The improved aviation network will make it easier for entrepreneurs to explore new markets, facilitate the smoother movement of goods and services, and enhance collaboration between African nations. Additionally, the tourism industry will experience a significant boost, as easier access to African destinations will encourage more visitors to explore the continent’s rich cultural heritage, wildlife, and landscapes. Afrik Allianz will also create direct and indirect employment opportunities, benefiting millions of Africans and contributing to the continent’s overall economic progress.

Afrik Allianz will achieve better financial health by also optimizing cargo operations through collaboration, data-driven insights, customer-centric approaches, continuous improvement, and implementing several strategies. Africa’s agricultural and manufacturing industries rely on efficient logistics to export goods to international markets. However, many businesses face challenges due to inadequate cargo facilities and high transportation costs. Goldstar Air’s investment in cargo aviation will provide faster and more cost-effective solutions for African exporters, ensuring that perishable goods, textiles, and other products reach global markets in optimal condition. By enhancing cargo services, member airlines will strengthen Africa’s position in global trade and support the growth of local industries.

Mr. Bannerman emphasized that, Goldstar Air is also negotiating codeshare agreements with other airlines, which will allow it to offer a more extensive route network and give passengers more options for traveling from all fifty (50) states in the United States of America and other continents to and from Africa. Goldstar Air believes that this type of agreement will benefit our partners by increasing brand awareness and market knowledge about Africa and other continents, facilitating trade and investment, and encouraging economic growth.

Following air service liberalization in the United States and the European Union in the late 20th century, African policymakers also began to move towards deregulating the continent’s air transport. Pressure to liberalize also emerged from domestic carriers, which wanted better access to new markets, as well as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). Several initiatives were announced from the 1980s onwards, most notably the Yamoussoukro Declaration in 1988 and the Abuja Treaty in 1994. This culminated in the signing of the Yamoussoukro Decision in 1999, which established principles through which deregulation and pro-competition policies could be implemented in the aviation sector.

The Yamoussoukro Decision is a treaty adopted by most members of the African Union (AU) that establishes a framework for the liberalization (OPEN SKIES) of air transport services between African countries and fair competition between airlines. The decision was signed by 44 African states in 1999, except Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Gabon, Madagascar, Mauritania, Morocco, Somalia, and South Africa, and became binding in 2002.

The Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) was launched in 2018 to fully implement the Yamoussoukro Decision, granting member states greater freedom in each other’s airspace. The “First freedom of the Air” is the right or privilege, in respect of scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State to fly across its territory without landing. The “Second freedom of the Air” is granted by one State to another State to land in its territory for non-traffic purposes. The “Third freedom of the Air” is granted by one State to another State to put down, in the territory of the first State, traffic coming from the home State of the carrier. The “Fourth freedom of the Air” is granted by one State to another State to take on, in the territory of the first State, traffic destined for the home State of the carrier, and The “Fifth freedom of the Air” is granted by one State to another State to put down and to take on, in the territory of the first State, traffic coming from or destined to a third state.

Many countries and organizations have been critical of the agreement, arguing that it will harm smaller airlines and allow already large carriers to monopolize the market. The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), an association of Nigerian airlines, denounced the Single African Air Transport Market and lobbied the Nigerian government to avoid implementing it, advocating instead for the formation of regional airlines before further air liberalization. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni also expressed concern in 2018 that a few airlines could dominate, which would not be beneficial.

Goldstar Air’s rebranding of Africa through its partnership with Afrik Allianz is a transformative movement poised to reshape the continent’s aviation landscape. By enhancing connectivity, modernizing infrastructure, creating economic opportunities, and embracing sustainability, the airline is positioning Africa as a formidable force in global aviation.

This initiative goes beyond improving air travel; it is about unlocking Africa’s full potential and presenting the continent as a destination of opportunity, innovation, and growth. As Goldstar Air expands its influence, Africa’s aviation industry will rise to new heights, redefining the way the world perceives and engages with the continent,

According to the first President of the Republic of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, we all want a United Africa, United not only in our concept of what unity connotes, but united in our common desire to move forward together in dealing with all the problems that can best be solved only on a continental basis.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah further stated that, the independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African Continent. It is clear that we must find an African solution for our problems, and that this can only be found in African unity. Divided we are weak: united, Africa could become one of the greatest forces for good in the world.

Goldstar Air distinguished role model Dr. Nkrumah emphasized that, the task ahead is great indeed, and heavy is the responsibility; and yet it is a noble and glorious challenge, A challenge which calls for the courage to dream, the courage to believe, the courage to dare, the courage to do, the courage to envision, the courage to fight, the courage to work, the courage to achieve and to achieve the highest excellencies and the fullest greatness of man.

Goldstar Air will honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah by marking his name on one of our aircraft as a registration number. The airline believes that naming aircraft after national heroes and heroines will also open up the frontiers of Africa aviation and tourism sectors.

Goldstar Air is about to launch the alliance and has notified the Africa Union (AU) Chairman and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretary General of what the Africa continent stands to gain. The airline also seeks the endorsement of the AU and AfCFTA to expand routes, share resources, and establish a seamless travel experience for international passengers who will get access to multiple destinations in Africa,

Goldstar Air The Power Force Behind Afrik Allianz
Goldstar Air, the power force behind Afrik Allianz will collaborate with the AfCFTA Secretariat to make the next new wave of dedicated global investments available to harness technological resources, drive growth, and ensure sustainability. Goldstar Air has officially informed the secretariat it’s intent and waiting for a meeting to discuss the safeguarding such investments like Afrik Allianz’s air transport liberalization efforts, and solidifying Africa’s position as a secure and attractive investment destination.

Cultural representation is an essential element of Afrik Allianz initiative. This initiative aims to celebrate Africa’s diverse cultures by incorporating African themes into its branding, in-flight experience, and service delivery. From traditional African cuisine to entertainment that showcases the continent’s music, art, and literature, Afrik Allianz will offer passengers an immersive African experience. Airlines staff will also be trained to provide hospitality that reflects Africa’s warmth, friendliness, and rich traditions. This cultural integration will strengthen Africa’s identity in the aviation industry and instill a sense of pride among African travelers.

Afrik Allianz will act as a bridge between global investments and African opportunities. It will organize investor roadshows, diaspora investment forums, sovereign wealth dialogues, and trade delegations. Afrik Allianz demystifies African markets for foreign investors while building African capacity to access international finance and promote intra-African trade, cross-border investments, and regional value chains. By fostering a more integrated and attractive investment climate, Afrik Allianz will amplify the continent’s voice in global financial negotiations.

The success of Afrik Allianz is not measured solely in financial returns but in transformed lives, thriving ecosystems, and a redefined African narrative. It seeks to prove that ethical, inclusive, and future-oriented investment can deliver superior returns while uplifting communities. Afrik Allianz is building a legacy of African excellence, resilience, and self-determination. Its mission is to invest with Africa, to co-create a prosperous, just, and sustainable future.

Afrik Allianz next wave of global investments in Africa will also involve enhancing customer experience and making air travel more accessible to a broader segment of the population. Historically, air travel in Africa has been perceived as a luxury for the elite, with high ticket prices preventing many people from flying. Afrik Allianz seeks to change this narrative by introducing competitive pricing models, offering flexible payment options, and launching loyalty programs that cater to frequent travelers. The focus on affordability does not compromise quality; instead, it will ensure that more Africans can experience safe, reliable, and comfortable air travel. Frequent promotions and discounts will further enhance accessibility, allowing passengers to save while enjoying premium services.

Airlines are just banks now, therefore Afrik Allianz members will create points on the frequent flyer program and sell them for real money to banks with co-branded credit cards. The banks will also award points to cardholders for spending, and both the banks and credit card companies make money off swipe fees from the use of the card. Cardholders can redeem points for flights, as well as other goods and services sold through member airlines’ proprietary e-commerce portals.

Safety and security are paramount for Afrik Allianz, which is dedicated to upholding the highest safety standards, ensuring that African travelers can fly with confidence. Afrik Allianz will collaborate with aviation regulatory bodies, international safety organizations, and government agencies to enhance security measures, implement advanced screening technologies, and train aviation personnel in global best practices. Strengthening safety protocols will boost confidence in Africa’s aviation industry, making it more attractive to both passengers and investors.

Afrik Allianz emphasizes strong aviation training and workforce development and recognizes that Africa’s aviation industry cannot thrive without a skilled workforce. To address this, Goldstar Air and Afrik Allianz will be investing in aviation training academies that will equip young Africans with the necessary skills to become pilots, engineers, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers. These training programs will create job opportunities, reduce dependence on foreign aviation professionals, and build a sustainable talent pipeline for Africa’s aviation sector. By developing homegrown aviation expertise, Goldstar Air aims to position Africa as a self-sufficient and competitive player in the industry.

The success of Afrik Allianz will require adaptability, trust, and a commitment to shared objectives. Learning from past failures of others will help shape stronger partnerships in the aviation industry and balance the network to provide comprehensive global reach. Coordinating flight schedules, baggage handling, and passenger services across different carriers requires meticulous planning as ensuring the financial health of Afrik Allianz members is vital.

Afrik Allianz is not merely responding to the wave of interest in Africa, it is creating the wave. Its bold vision, grounded in African realities and global best practices, is inspiring confidence, and driving systemic change. As the world recalibrates in the face of ecological, economic, and social upheavals, Afrik Allianz offers a roadmap for investing in a better future, starting in Africa, led by Africa, and benefiting the world.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, recently explained and defended her use of the professorship title.

During her appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament for her vetting in July 2025, Dr Ayensu-Danquah stated that she holds the title of Professor of Surgery from the University of Utah in the United States.

Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah does not hold the title of ‘professor’ in any capacity – GTEC

According to her, the American system under which she earned the title differs significantly from the Ghanaian system, particularly within the medical field.

This was after she was asked by the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin to draw a distinction with the Ghanaian academic system, where a PhD typically precedes an Associate Professor rank, followed by a full Professorship, often requiring extensive publications and research.

He asked her to clarify the jurisdiction where she earned the title and whether she held a document from a certified body confirming the conferment, as is customary in Ghana.

“… The American system is completely different from the Ghana system,” she said.

She stated that her name appears as a professor on the records of the American College of Surgeons and that she is also a board-certified surgeon in the United States.

“… I am a professor of surgery at the University of Utah; I am a professor of global surgery by the American College of Surgeons and American Board of Surgery. I have worked in teaching for the last 15 years. American College of Surgeons has my name as a professor, Ayensu-Danquah. I am a board-certified surgeon, doubly boarded from the United States of America,” she added.

Dr Ayensu-Danquah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, took the opportunity to explain the process she underwent to become a licensed medical practitioner in Ghana upon her return to the country.

She indicated that she was licensed not only as a surgeon but also as a surgical specialist after successfully completing professional examinations.

“I licensed in Ghana not only as a surgeon, but also as a surgeon specialist. In 2014, even though I was a professor of surgery in the United States, I came back to Ghana. I took a written exam for a whole day. The next day, I sat in front of three surgeons in Korle-Bu and I did an oral exam,” she explained.

She added; “After the oral exam, I spent another full day doing an ethics class. My license in Ghana is license number MDCRN7629. It was conferred on me on January 27, 2014. That is just a generalist. And I also have my specialist license, both of which were conferred on me on January 27, 2014. Currently, my dues are all paid and I’m a full member of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council.”

Football Chief Slams Kotoko Over GFA Vote Boycott

0

Grusah

Veteran club president Alhaji Karim Grusah has launched a scathing attack on Asante Kotoko, branding their decision to abstain from last week’s Ghana Football Association Congress vote as “shameful and cowardly.”

The King Faisal boss reacted furiously after Kotoko declined to participate in key statutory amendments, including extending the GFA presidency term limits.

“Kotoko is not a serious club at all,” Grusah fumed during an interview with Akoma FM. “A big club like Kotoko cannot fail to cast its vote in a major decision defining Ghana football’s future.” His criticism highlighted the club’s perceived lack of leadership at a pivotal moment for the sport’s governance.

The Porcupine Warriors’ abstention has divided Ghana’s football community. Some fans defend the move, while others echo Grusah’s concern over indecisiveness. Adding to the controversy, Grusah pointedly noted Kotoko’s ongoing failure to confirm a home venue for their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup campaign. “Meanwhile, their venue is still unknown,” he stressed. “They need to start taking things seriously.”

The GFA Congress amendments passed despite Kotoko’s non-participation. Yet the fallout continues, raising questions about accountability among Ghana’s elite clubs. Where was that decisive spirit Kotoko shows on the pitch, critics ask, when the rulebook was being rewritten?

Ghana’s poor score in ‘B-READY’ signals challenges to creating a business-friendly environment – World Bank

Ghana’s poor score in the World Bank’s B-READY categories signals challenges to creating an enabling environment that encourages private sector investment, the World Bank has revealed.

For instance, the country scored 32 in Market Competition, 41 in Business Entry and 55 in Dispute Resolution.

According to the Bretton Woods latest 2025 Economic Update, there is a growing mismatch between rising education levels and the availability of high-quality jobs.

As such, there is the probability of securing a high-quality job at all levels of education declining.

“A rapid increase in the number of workers with higher levels of education—without a corresponding rise in high-quality jobs—may be driving down the returns to education. But low education quality -as measured by Ghana’s poor performance on standardized test scores- could also be playing an important role”.

The report also pointed out that there is not enough job creation for a growing workforce.

There is a mismatch between working-age population growth and employment growth.

The report also expressed worry about the youth not seeking employment after completing their studies. They most commonly cite the lack of adequate jobs as the reason.

Secondly, the job shortage is masked by significant outmigration of youth with about one million youth are estimated to live abroad.

Weak Labour Demand in Productive Sectors

The report also stressed the weak labor demand in the productive sectors.

Between 2012 and 2023, it said self-employment accounted for twice as many wage jobs created outside agriculture.

Again, the sectors that generate the largest numbers of waged jobs for medium-skilled workers—such as manufacturing, construction, and domestic services—are among the slowest growing in Ghana

The report served as a foundation for more detailed analyses in the forthcoming World Bank Growth and Jobs Report for Ghana.

It also identified five key challenges that a comprehensive growth and jobs strategy will need to address.

President John Mahama has embarked on a significant journey to Asia, departing Accra on Sunday, August 17th, for high-level engagements in Japan and Singapore.

The trip is strategically aimed at strengthening Ghana’s economic partnerships and attracting vital investment to support the nation’s “Resetting Ghana” recovery agenda.

Mahama’s first stop is Japan, where he will participate in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX). He is scheduled to address a key plenary session focused on trade and investment opportunities.

The President will also host a dedicated Ghana Presidential Investment Forum in Tokyo, directly pitching the country’s potential to Japanese business leaders.

His packed schedule includes crucial meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, alongside discussions with top officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO).

Trade expansion, technical cooperation, and infrastructure development are expected to dominate these talks.

Following the Japan leg, President Mahama travels to Singapore for a three-day state visit. There, he will confer with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

A major highlight will be his address at the Africa-Singapore Business Forum, positioning Ghana as a prime investment destination in sectors like technology, finance, and skills development.

The Presidency underscored that the dual missions are central to opening new markets for Ghanaian exports and securing fresh capital from the Asian private sector.

Building alliances in key growth areas remains a critical objective as the government pushes forward with its economic reform plans.

South African rand lifted by gold, focus on inflation data next week

0

South Africa’s rand firmed against a weaker dollar on Friday August 15, 2025, helped by higher gold prices as concerns over the United States’ fiscal health sent investors into the safe-haven asset.

At 1434 GMT, the rand traded at 17.58 against the dollar, about 0.2% stronger than its previous close.

Gold prices rose on Friday, boosted by a decline in the dollar, which was last trading down about 0.4% against a basket of currencies.

Like other major producers of precious metals, South Africa often benefits from higher gold prices.

Investors will be closely watching domestic inflation figures, due on Wednesday next week, for clues about the health of Africa’s most industrialised economy.

“It has been an impressive week for the ZAR so far, as it started the week above 17.70 and could make it 10 cents stronger at the close of trade today,” said ETM Analytics in a research note.

On the stock market, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s Top 40 (. JTOPI), opens new tab index closed down 0.1%.

South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond was flat, with the yield down half a basis point to 9.6%.

Uganda targets higher exports with first large-scale gold mine

0

Uganda has inaugurated its first large-scale gold mine, a $250 million Chinese-owned project in the country’s east that will also refine the bullion to 99.9% purity, according to a statement from the president’s office.

The landlocked east African country, which has a variety of minerals including copper, cobalt and iron ore, wants to expand its mining industry and position itself as a major gold producer and exporter.

Last year Uganda raised $3.4 billion from gold exports, according to central bank data, about 37% of the country’s total export revenue.

The figure includes the re-export of gold brought into the country, with nearly all its domestic production from small-scale artisanal miners.

While its gold export earnings have increased in recent years, it is still far behind Africa’s largest bullion producer Ghana, which raised $11.6 billion from shipments of the metal last year.

“In order to wake up in the minerals sector, we must have full value addition for all minerals like gold, lithium, tin among others,” President Yoweri Museveni said in a statement issued late on Saturday.
