‘They are not a serious club’ – Alhaji Grusah slams Kotoko

Businessman and football administrator Alhaji Karim Grusah has taken aim at Asante Kotoko, describing the Porcupine Warriors as “not a serious club” after they abstained from voting during the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) 31st Ordinary Congress.

On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, delegates gathered at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram to decide on one of the most significant amendments in recent years, whether to extend the tenure of the GFA presidency from two terms to three.

The outcome was emphatic: 114 votes in favour, six against, and three abstentions. Kotoko, Ghana’s most successful club, was among those who declined to take a position.

Grusah, who had openly opposed the amendment in the weeks leading up to Congress, was unimpressed with Kotoko’s stance, voicing his displeasure during an interview on Akoma FM.

Gifty Oware set to become GFA’s second Vice President following Congress approval

“Kotoko is not a serious club at all. A big club like Kotoko cannot fail to cast its vote in a major decision such as the amendment of the GFA’s statutes,” he said.

He further highlighted a growing concern around Kotoko’s preparations for continental football, with the club yet to confirm where it will host its CAF Confederation Cup fixtures.

“Meanwhile, their venue for the CAF Confederation Cup is still unknown at this time. They need to start taking things seriously,” he added.

The veteran football administrator, whose King Faisal side were relegated to Division One in June 2023, has long accused GFA President Kurt Okraku of failing to prioritise youth football development.

Tanzania police hunt traditional healer linked to student’s death

Manyara Regional Police Commander, SACP Ahmed Makarani Manyara Regional Police Commander, SACP Ahmed Makarani

Police in Manyara Region are hunting for a traditional healer alleged to have provided misleading divination that led to the killing of a Form Four student, Yohana Konki (17), at Qash Secondary School in Babati District.

The student is reported to have been assaulted to death by fellow students on 16 August 2025 after being accused of stealing a tablet.

Manyara Regional Police Commander, SACP Ahmed Makarani, told The Citizen on Monday that the healer fled with his family and belongings soon after the incident.

“The healer escaped the same day after hearing that his divination had caused problems. We are still investigating and searching for him, and we believe he will be found,” he said.

Commander Makarani confirmed that 11 students remain in custody over the incident. Two others were released after evidence cleared them of involvement.

“One was not at school on the day of the incident. The other was passing by on his motorcycle when the attack occurred. His motorbike was actually used to rush the victim to hospital. He is not a suspect at this stage,” he explained.

Police say the tragedy began when two students who had lost a tablet consulted the traditional healer, who allegedly pointed to Yohana as the thief.

“After returning from the healer, they accused him of the theft. When he denied it, they beat him to death,” said Commander Makarani.

He urged the school administration to install CCTV cameras to help prevent similar incidents.

“Had there been cameras on the premises, the students could have identified the culprit instead of relying on misleading divination,” he said.

Yohana’s aunt, Elizabeth Konki, said the family had been left devastated, lamenting that her nephew’s dreams had been cut short by an undeserved death.

A student witness, Hassan Juma, claimed that the attackers beat Yohana with sticks after being told by the healer that he was responsible for the missing device.

Antoine Semenyo Responds To Racial Abuse With Brace

Antoine Semenyo

AFC Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo has spoken out following the racial abuse he suffered during Friday night’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield, describing the night as “unforgettable” for the solidarity shown across the football community.

The match was briefly halted in the 29th minute after Semenyo reported being targeted by a supporter. The individual accused of directing the abuse was swiftly removed from the stadium before later being arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. Police confirmed the man, is currently being questioned.

Semenyo, later revealed he had also received racist messages on Instagram, sharing screenshots with the caption: “When will it stop?”

Despite the incidents, the Ghana international delivered a standout performance, scoring twice in Bournemouth’s eventual 4-2 defeat. In a social media post the following day, he said the night would remain with him forever—not because of the abuse, but because of the unity he witnessed.

“Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together,” he wrote. “To my @afcb team-mates who supported me in that moment, to the @liverpoolfc players and fans who showed their true character, to the @premierleague officials who handled it professionally – thank you. Football showed its best side when it mattered most.”

Semenyo added that his two goals were his way of “speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch” and thanked the football community for its overwhelming support.

“The messages of solidarity remind me why I love this sport,” he said. “We keep moving forward, together.”

Liverpool, Bournemouth, and the Premier League have all issued strong statements against the abuse, with the league confirming that a full investigation is underway.

AU’s map protest shows Africa’s geo-politics blind spot

0

Policy analyst Bright Simons Policy analyst Bright Simons

Policy analyst Bright Simons has questioned the African Union’s (AU) call for the world to ditch the Mercator map projection, arguing that the bloc often pursues geo-politics without the matching geo-policy required to achieve lasting results.

In a post shared via X on Monday August 18, 2025, Simons said the AU’s position reflects a long-standing weakness stating, “African elites are very attuned to geo-POLITICS but not so much to geo-POLICY. They often push Africa’s political interests without syncing with the underlying policy-plumbing that actually shapes outcomes. I call this problem: Katanomics.”

The Mercator projection, created in 1569, is the most widely used map design but has long been faulted for making Africa appear smaller than its true size. Greenland, for instance, looks equal to Africa on Mercator maps even though it is 14 times smaller.

M23 rebels suspend peace talks with DR Congo government

Simons stressed that the map was never designed for comparing landmasses but for navigation.

“Mercator was only interested in navigation. Distorting sizes was not a problem for the mariners he was serving,” he explained.

He added that while alternative projections such as Gall-Peters better capture Africa’s scale, they come with their own trade-offs, distorting shapes.

“Any solution that focuses on popular preferences, wants, likes, fears, etc. without enough focus on the HOW we got there will fail or be ignored,” he cautioned.

Simons noted that despite decades of debate over projections, African cartographers have been largely absent.

“African cartographers were nowhere in the debates. Once again, missing in geo-POLICY,” he said, urging the continent to not only demand recognition but also to contribute technically to the solutions.

NPP’s Solomon Asumadu defends education credentials ahead of Akwatia by-election

Solomon Asumadu is the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia by-election Solomon Asumadu is the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia by-election

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia by-election, Solomon Asumadu, has defended his educational qualifications, insisting that he is competent to serve as a Member of Parliament.

According to a report by adomonline.com on Monday, August 18, 2025, Asumadu said education should not be used as a tool for discrimination or ridicule.

“I am glad this question about my education has come up. Sometimes, if you don’t know someone, you may treat them with disdain. I earned my first degree in Human Resource Management from All Nations University in Koforidua in 2008. After completing my national service at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), I ventured into business,” he explained.

He dismissed claims that his opponents or other professionals have an advantage over him, arguing that his academic and professional background adequately prepare him for parliamentary work.

“Just because someone is a lawyer doesn’t mean they are more educated or speak better English. Education starts long before your first degree. English was a key part of my academic journey, so I am confident in my abilities,” he said.

Asumadu maintained that he is “educated and learned” and expressed confidence in his ability to represent the people of Akwatia effectively in Parliament.

The Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025, follows the passing of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025, after a short illness.

The race is expected to be a close contest between Solomon Asumadu and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

Mr. Anim underscored the need for residents to protect public property and safeguard infrastructural development in Kumawu. He also urged the police to intensify efforts to clamp down on the menace.

“The road is for the people of Kumawu, not for selfish destruction. I will not sit idle while our future is compromised,” he declared.

Catholic Professionals in Ghana unite under new National Council to champion service and integrity

0

Catholic professionals from diverse fields across Ghana have formally united under a newly inaugurated Catholic Professionals Guild (CPG) Council, pledging to uphold integrity and contribute to national development through service.

The historic Induction and Inauguration Ceremony, hosted during the 9:30 a.m. Mass of the St. Bakhita Catholic Church in Sakumono, drew clergy, professionals, and parishioners for a celebration that highlighted the growing role of Catholic professionals in the Church and the Ghanaian society.

The ceremony was presided over by Most Rev. Bishop John Kobina Louis, who called on the new leaders to serve with dedication and urged the Catholic community to fully support their work.

Induction of Guild Executives

The event marked the induction of new executives for several professional guilds, including the Accra Chapter of the Catholic Association of Media Practitioners, Ghana (CAMP-G), the Catholic Health Professionals Guild (CATHPROG), the Association of Catholic Teachers Guild (ACT), and the Business, Management & Finance Guild (BMF).

These guilds join a wider network of professional bodies already under the Catholic Professionals Guild umbrella, representing disciplines such as law, education, sports, IT, agribusiness, hospitality, creative arts, and security.

A Vision of Service and Integrity

Delivering his maiden speech as the incoming Chairman of the Council, Samuel Benedict Kwaku Nugblega described the inauguration as “a renewal of purpose and a recommitment to our shared mission.”

He explained that the Council’s mandate extends beyond ceremony, but to build a united, faith-driven community that reflects Catholic values in both professional and personal life.

“I salute the outgoing leadership and all who have served before us for their tireless dedication. You have laid a strong foundation of faith, values, and service. Now, with humility and determination, we take up the mantle and promise to build on it—guided by the Holy Spirit and the teachings of our Church,” Mr Nugblega assured.

In his speech, Mr. Nugblega also outlined the Council’s three-pillar agenda:

1. Formation in Integrity and Catholic Social Teaching – providing continuous mentoring, faith-based guidance, and ethical formation for professionals, especially the youth.

2. Building a Strong and Caring Guild Community – strengthening solidarity, prioritizing members’ welfare, and empowering Catholic professionals to rise collectively as one family.

3. Deepening Collaboration to Influence Society and Policy – working with the Church hierarchy, policymakers, and institutions to promote human dignity, social justice, and the common good.

He also reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to mentoring young Catholic professionals, mobilizing resources for community development, and supporting the Church’s mission in evangelization and social action.

Call to Collective Responsibility

Mr. Nugblega acknowledged the foundation laid by outgoing leaders, pledging to build on their legacy “with humility and determination, guided by the Holy Spirit.”

He stressed that the Council’s vision cannot be achieved by its executives alone, but requires the commitment of clergy, professionals, and the wider Catholic community.

National Outlook

The inauguration of the Catholic Professionals Guild Council represents a significant step in mobilizing Catholic expertise to contribute to national discourse and policy direction.

By combining professional skill with faith and ethical leadership, the new Council positions itself as a strong moral voice within Ghana’s professional and civic landscape.

As Bishop John Kobina Louis reminded the gathering, the Catholic community has a responsibility to stand behind these professionals as they bring Catholic values to bear on national life.

The event closed with prayers for guidance from the Holy Spirit for the new leaders, marking the beginning of what the new leaders hope will be a new era of integrity, mentorship, and impactful service by the Catholic Professionals Guilds across Ghana.

Private legal practitioner and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), questioning the party’s commitment to its ideological principles.

In an X post on August 16, 2025, Barker-Vormawor pointed out what he described as the ideological shortcomings of the party.

‘Nowhere does the law empower you to judge professorial titles’ – Barker-Vormawor to GTEC

He noted that the NDC had failed to uphold its principles.

“The NDC today is a pale shadow of its ideological rhetoric. Because left politics means ORAL! Left politics means a dismantling of the corrupt infrastructure of the corrupt elite,” Barker-Vormawor argued.

He stressed the need for the party to act decisively against corruption.

“Left politics means that the NDC must be prepared to impose the death penalty on those who rob the people dry,” he stated.

Barker-Vormawor warned that if the NDC does not realign with its professed ideology, activists like himself have a duty to “replace it with a party committed with Catholic fervour to the struggles of the working-class people.”

New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist, Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuase, has reportedly been re-arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

The activist, who was first arrested on August 13, 2025, as part of ongoing intelligence-led operations targeting the illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons, had been in police custody after failing to meet the bail conditions granted by an Accra Circuit Court.

According to the police, his initial arrest was to assist with investigations into videos and images allegedly shared on social media showing individuals brandishing high-grade firearms.

ECG overhaul, COCOBOD restructuring, among top financial sector reforms

The World Bank has proposed a set of medium-term policy measures the government can adopt to enhance fiscal consolidation.

According to its 9th Ghana Economic Update, the Bank noted that sectoral reforms are necessary to address structural fiscal imbalances by eliminating deficits at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and COCOBOD, while also strengthening the financial sector.

It said private sector participation is required to overhaul the ECG in order to improve operational efficiency, boost revenue collection, and reduce losses.

“Moreover, it is necessary to ensure the consistent implementation of the quarterly debt settlement system and bring the Energy Sector Recovery Program (ESRP) back on track,” the report stated.

On the cocoa sector, the Bank proposed a comprehensive reform of COCOBOD’s functions and responsibilities. It recommended that COCOBOD maintain its core mandate of cocoa production and marketing while phasing out quasi-fiscal expenditures.

In the financial sector, the World Bank stressed the importance of establishing a robust framework for resolving non-viable banks, strengthening supervisory systems to integrate fintech players while ensuring systemic stability, and expanding access to affordable financial services.

“Continued macroeconomic stabilisation, particularly sustained disinflation and fiscal consolidation, is essential to lower nominal interest rates and improve real borrowing conditions,” it said.

On the fiscal front, the Bank underscored that the full rollout of the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy (MTRS) will be key to strengthening domestic revenue mobilisation.

“Remaining measures include rationalising VAT, expanding excise tax coverage, improving tax compliance, and broadening the tax base,” it added.

Ghana needs global vision – Alan Kyerematen teases 2028 presidential bid

0

Alan Kyerematen is the leader of Movement for Chanage Alan Kyerematen is the leader of Movement for Chanage

Ghana’s former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, has left no doubt about his political future—he intends to run for president again in 2028.

In an exclusive interview with Sandra Babu-Boateng on PanaGenius TV’s The BreakDown, the veteran politician reflected on his dramatic departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), his international track record, and his conviction that Ghana now needs a leader capable of guiding both the nation and the African continent into a new era.

Kyerematen, widely credited as the chief architect behind the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), said his resignation from the NPP in 2024 was not an impulsive decision, but the culmination of years of watching the party he helped build drift away from its core philosophy.

“I made that decision because I became part of the NPP as a founding member in the early 1990s only because I was attracted to certain foundational values of the party… At a point when I felt that these values were being eroded—and this was not just in 2024, I had long been complaining about these challenges—I realized the vehicle that was carrying the ideals had completely departed from the original vision. It was time for me to move on. And so that’s why I stepped out and established the Movement for Change,” he explained.

For years, Kyerematen was seen as a natural successor within the NPP’s leadership ranks. He recalled how former President John Agyekum Kufuor once described the party’s evolution in terms of “generational leadership.”

“President Kufuor made a very interesting statement… that in the NPP our leadership is anchored on generational succession. He specifically mentioned former presidents and other names, and then said the next generation would be Alan Kyerematen and others,” he recounted.

But when the time came, the party turned elsewhere. Despite his extensive record, Kyerematen said internal politics prevented him from becoming flagbearer, pushing him to launch an independent bid in 2024.

Pointing to his long career in both domestic and international leadership, Kyerematen stressed that his credentials extend far beyond party politics.

“In 1994, I was listed as one of the 100 global leaders by Time magazine. I was mentioned alongside Bill Gates, Jeffrey Sachs, John F. Kennedy Jr., Condoleezza Rice, and others… So it’s not just about my record in the NPP,” he disclosed.

He also recalled that in 2013, African heads of state unanimously endorsed him as the continent’s candidate for Director-General of the World Trade Organization, one of the four most influential roles in global governance.

Although his 2024 presidential bid fell short, Kyerematen made it clear he is not exiting the political stage.

“I’m working on consolidating my political path, which I’ve been involved in for years. I’m not sure I can reveal now exactly what that path will look like, but I still want to contribute to the governance of this country in a more significant way than before,” he said.

When pressed on whether he intends to contest the presidency again, his response was direct:

“Yes. In fact, I can confirm that I’ll run again. Which political vehicle I’ll use, that’s yet to be determined—but of course, the Almighty God has the final say. That is my interest and my desire. I believe the country will greatly benefit from my experience, my exposure, my global networks, and my vision, particularly for Africa.”

While avoiding firm commitments about the platform or political structure he will use in 2028, Kyerematen framed his future candidacy as one centered on national renewal and continental leadership.

“Despite whatever you say about any of them, our past presidents have served. But if you scan the country today and ask who can not only build on their record but also take Ghana to the next level—leading not just this country but the continent into a future of prosperity, stability, peace, and security—then I believe I naturally come onto the radar,” he concluded.

‘We are expecting your resignation’

0

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to resign.

In a post shared on X on August 18, 2025, Rev Ntim Fordjour indicated that Ablakwa must resign over President John Dramani Mahama’s use of a private jet for his recent trip to Japan and Singapore, as a matter of principle.

He asserted that the minister must resign because he supposedly vowed to put his job on the line if his government used private jets when they come into power.

The MP, who is also the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, added that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government must apologise to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for criticising him for using private jets for international travels, and not the presidential jet.

“Mr Principle @S_OkudzetoAblak, Ghana is expecting your resignation. NDC must apologise to Ghanaians and President Akufo-Addo for doing petty politics with presidential travels. Government must be bold to submit a proposal for the acquisition of a new Presidential Jet for the President’s safety,” the post read.

The post had an old video of Ablakwa making remarks on the previous government’s use of private jets.

Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, is captured in the video vowing to resign over the use of private jets by an NDC president.

“I don’t have anything against the president, but it’s about protecting the public purse, and I don’t expect a future NDC president to hire jets at such high costs. Some of us would resign; I wouldn’t want to be part of such a government,” he stated on Adom FM’s Burning Issues in July 2022.

While in opposition, Ablakwa gained fame for his constant criticism of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for using a private jet for foreign trips.

Commonwealth lawyers, Bar Council of England wrong to demand CJ’s reinstatement – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

A member of the  National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, has criticised the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the Bar Council of England and Wales over their call for the immediate reinstatement of Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, August 18, Mr. Adawudu argued that the foreign legal bodies overstepped their bounds by attempting to dictate outcomes to Ghana, instead of respecting the country’s constitutional procedures.

“I think the Bar Council in England and the Commonwealth got it wrong because every country has its constitution. They should not just come and say reinstate the Chief Justice when the committee has not even finished its work,” he said.

He added that due process must be allowed to take its course and that the concerns raised by the foreign bodies reflect a “colonial mentality.”

“They should have just said they are watching and following to see if due process is being followed, rather than issuing an ultimatum to a sovereign country. They should not belittle our intelligence,” Mr. Adawudu stressed.

His comments come after the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association issued a joint statement on August 14, raising concerns over the April 22 suspension of the Chief Justice.

They urged President John Dramani Mahama to immediately reinstate her, describing Ghana as a nation with a long-standing tradition of upholding the rule of law.

The legal bodies also called for transparency in the ongoing disciplinary proceedings and demanded that the Chief Justice’s legal representatives be given full access to the process.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Attorney-General has filed processes at the High Court seeking to strike out a second judicial review application brought by Justice Torkornoo. The suspended Chief Justice is challenging one of the three petitions filed for her removal, describing it as flawed since it was submitted by a group whose membership and legal standing are in question.

The Attorney-General, through Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, insists the petition is valid and that the claims being raised by Justice Torkornoo’s legal team should not hinder the committee established under Article 146 from continuing its work.

Background

On April 22, 2025, President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo after a prima facie case was established against her, following three separate petitions alleging misconduct and incompetence.

Under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, the president, after consulting the Council of State, may suspend a Supreme Court Justice if a prima facie case is found, and subsequently set up a committee to investigate. A five-member panel, chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was accordingly constituted to lead the inquiry.

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior Supreme Court judge, was appointed acting Chief Justice while the investigation continues.

The suspension has divided opinion within Ghana’s legal and political circles, with the Ghana Bar Association, the Centre for Democratic Movement, and the opposition NPP condemning the action as unconstitutional and a threat to judicial independence.

Justice Torkornoo has, however, vowed not to resign, describing the process as arbitrary and unconstitutional, while insisting on her right to defend herself.

Following the circulation of an indecent video recorded without her consent at an airport, Emmanson says she is now living in fear and deep embarrassments

In a recent interview, she revealed that her image has been misused across social media, with people turning her body into memes and stickers for ridicule. “I can’t go out anymore. I’m traumatized. My body has been used to make stickers. It’s not a joke to me,” she said tearfully.

She explained that the mental stress and public shame have affected her family, social life, and peace of mind. Emmanson, who insists she was unfairly portrayed, said the public failed to consider her humanity amid the mockery and online backlash.

“I was humiliated. People turned my pain into comedy,” she added. “I’m not okay.”

Several human rights activists and celebrities have since called for justice, demanding the prosecution of airport officials responsible for leaking the footage.

Ofankor–Nsawam Road: Maripoma Returns To Site Since Thursday

It has been established that Maripoma Enterprise Limited, contractors working on the Ofankor–Nsawam Road, has returned to site as of Thursday, August 14, 2025.

For commuters, business owners, and residents, the return is seen more of progress; “We are glad the contractor has shown up. We want results, not excuses anymore,” one commuter told this reporter.

The Ofankor–Nsawam Road, one of Ghana’s busiest highways, has long symbolised neglect and betrayal.

For weeks, despite the government settling arrears owed to the contractor- an eye-watering GHS809 million (about $77 million), the road lay abandoned, dusty, and deadly which caused protests from citizens.

However, documents sighted by this paper confirm that the government released the full payment to Maripoma in just one week.

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department issued three separate instructions to the Bank of Ghana:

• 28th July 2025: GHS359,928,437.70 transferred to Maripoma’s account at Zenith Bank (UK).
• 31st July 2025: GHS100,000,000.00 transferred.
• 4th August 2025: GHS350,000,000.00 transferred.

All three directives, signed by Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Kwanin Agyei and copied to the Ministers of Finance and Roads & Highways, explicitly stated the funds were for the rehabilitation of the Nsawam–Ofankor Road.

In total, more than GHS809 million left state coffers.

The company has confirmed payment and has since last Thursday, been to site to continue work.
Until August 14, community leaders alleged sabotage, hinting that the contractor was deliberately stalling to embarrass government.

That narrative shifted last Thursday, when Maripoma’s teams were spotted resuming work along the stretch.

It is believed that, before Maripoma’s return, the road’s neglect was inflicting a heavy toll on commercial drivers, businesses, and accidents have been reported.

It was reported that, commuters last Saturday, staged demonstrations in Nsawam and Amasaman, carrying placards that read:
• “Accidents Daily, How Many More?”
• “Accountability Missing!”
• “Years of Dust, Delays and Broken Promises,” and warned they would block the Accra–Nsawam road
on Thursday, August 21, if rehabilitation does not progress at a meaningful pace.

While Maripoma Enterprise Limited—founded by Managing Director Ali Seidu and incorporated in 1998—has finally moved back to site, doubts have been cleared.

Certified under the highest financial and road construction classifications in Ghana, the company has handled road and civil engineering projects nationwide.

Until real progress is made, commuters of Ofankor, Amasaman, and Nsawam will remain on edge—cautious witnesses to a project that has only just stirred back to life.

Afenyo-Markin criticizes Mahama’s government over alleged rising unemployment, abandoned initiatives

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Aug 18, GNA — Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has criticized the John Dramani Mahama administration for allegedly abandoning key initiatives introduced under the Akufo-Addo government, exacerbating Ghana’s unemployment situation.

Speaking at the grand durbar, homecoming, and handing-over ceremony of the Asante Students Union at the University of Ghana, he highlighted the scrapping of flagship policies like the One District One Factory (1D1F) program and related tax exemptions, which had discouraged investment and slowed job creation.

He also emphasized that more than one in every four Ghanaians woke up without a meaningful job, citing an overall unemployment rate of nearly 15 per cent according to official sources.

“When young people can’t find jobs, it is not just an economic problem; it becomes a threat to our national security in a region experiencing various forms of armed conflict,” he warned.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, accused the government of allegedly betraying the country’s path to industrialization by shelving the 1D1F initiative, which used tax incentives to ignite industrialization across Ghana.

“The government has discarded it, abandoned it, and killed it. Factories that were planned under the previous administration now sit idle. Investment plans have stalled,” he added.

The Effutu legislator expressed concerns over the alleged growing burden of unpaid loans, particularly under the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC). “Over GH¢291 million loaned to small businesses through MASLOC remains unpaid after 12 years, as of February last year. In our banking sector, GH¢654 million vanished as debt in just five months this year,” he alleged.

Consequently, the Minority Leader urged the government to create a more business-friendly environment to support innovation, investment, and sustainable job creation. “When the government fails to create the right economic environment to inspire the creation of new jobs, young people must innovate to create their own. When leaders won’t build opportunities, the next generation of leaders must build them from scratch. “The choice is simple: either we solve the unemployment crisis, or it will solve us in ways we won’t like,” he said.

Lawyers for Grace Ayensu Danquah accuse GTEC of bias, threaten legal action – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Lawyers for Hon. Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, a Deputy Minister for Health and Member of Parliament for Essikadu-Ketan, have strongly criticised the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) over its recent correspondence questioning her academic and professional credentials.

In a letter addressed to GTEC’s Director-General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, and signed by David K. Ametepe, Esq., the solicitors described the Commission’s actions as “abrasive, unnecessarily combative, and in parts, disparaging.”

The legal team argued that GTEC’s assessment lacked transparency and did not cite any published criteria, guidelines, or regulatory framework to justify its conclusions. “This lack of procedural clarity raises legitimate apprehension that the process was unguided and influenced by subjective or extraneous considerations,” the letter stated.

A major point of contention, according to the lawyers, is GTEC’s decision to circulate its correspondence to officials in Parliament and at the Presidency, including a direct letter to the Chief of Staff. They described this move as “wholly improper, and potentially defamatory,” insisting that Dr. Ayensu Danquah never sought appointment to her political offices on the basis of her academic titles.

The lawyers further dismissed GTEC’s claim that she had misrepresented her academic standing, stressing that there is no legal or professional prohibition against her being addressed as “Professor.” They explained that in the United States, where she obtained her academic title, both tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty members are formally recognised as professors.

They accused the Commission of misinterpreting international academic norms and overstepping its statutory mandate under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023). According to them, GTEC’s role is limited to verifying the authenticity of certificates, diplomas, and degrees upon request—not policing academic titles.

“Rather than acknowledging that a respected academic institution has, in fact, appointed her to a position which confers that title, the Commission elected to issue dismissive and conclusory statements suggesting that she was ‘no more than a part-time lecturer,’” the lawyers wrote, describing the claim as “extremely unwarranted and unfounded.”

They also warned that GTEC’s approach undermines internationally accepted standards such as the UNESCO Global Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education (2019) and the Lisbon Recognition Convention, which emphasise deference to appointments made by recognised foreign institutions.

The lawyers have demanded that GTEC disclose the process it used in reaching its conclusions, the legal basis for assessing their client’s credentials, and the appeal mechanisms available for persons aggrieved by such determinations.

They have also requested evidence that Dr. Ayensu Danquah was given the opportunity to respond before the Commission issued its correspondence.

The letter cautions that if GTEC fails to respond within 14 days, their client reserves the right to pursue legal remedies, including certiorari, mandamus, and declaratory relief, to protect her reputation.

“We trust that this matter will receive your urgent attention and that the Commission will take steps to realign its approach to ensure that its actions remain within the confines of the law and the principles of fair administrative justice,” the letter concluded.

One of the scenes in Osu

Growing piles of uncollected rubbish, choked gutters, and indiscriminate dumping of waste are fueling public health fears in Osu, one of Accra’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.

From Asafoaste Ankaa Street’s bustling commercial strip to the narrow residential lanes behind Ringway Estates, the stench of refuse and stagnant water is becoming part of daily life.

Residents say the worsening sanitation situation is already taking a toll on their well-being and warn it could spiral into a major health crisis if left unchecked as the raining season peaks.

“Every day I sweep in front of my shop, but people come and dump their rubbish again,” lamented Aunty Mabel, a shop owner near Ringway Estates. “We are just surrounded by filth, and the smell is terrible,” she added.

Like many others, she blames the poor state of waste management partly on irregular refuse collection by city authorities. “Sometimes, the bins are full for days. Who is supposed to collect them?” she asked.

A walk through parts of Osu paints a grim picture; gutters clogged with plastic and food waste, flies buzzing around open drains near food vendors, and pools of stagnant water breeding mosquitoes. The environmental conditions, health experts warn, are fertile ground for outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and malaria. Although city by-laws prohibit littering and open dumping, enforcement remains weak.

Shared Responsibility

Some residents, however, acknowledge that the community itself bears part of the blame.

“Some of us are not helping at all,” admitted Mr. Godwin Tetteh, who has lived in Osu for over 20 years. “People dump ‘Borla’ behind their houses and leave it to rot. You can’t blame everything on the government.”

Mr. Tetteh recalls a time when “town council” officers patrolled neighbourhoods, inspecting premises and summoning offenders to court. He believes reviving such measures could improve the situation.

Calls for Action

Residents of Osu are now calling for urgent intervention from the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly to step up waste management services, enforce sanitation laws, and educate the public on proper waste disposal.

Residents fear that blocked drains could worsen flooding in low-lying areas, spreading contaminants through homes and businesses.By

“It depends… There is this picture we try to give women who are like that. If the person thinks the criteria for who I am looking for, I am not all about looks, by the way. But at least it shouldn’t be like I am with my mother.

“I don’t really mind if there is a connection. Age isn’t just a number… It is more about the connection. Once there is a strong connection, I don’t think every other thing matters,” he said.

Register your business or risk penalties, closure – ORC warns entrepreneurs

The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC)

The Director of Business Registration and Licences at the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC), Yayra Adzo Banini, has urged businesses to register their companies or risk sanctions and possible closure.

According to her, business registration is the only legitimate way to prove a company’s existence.

“We can boast that if you are born, you will have a birth certificate, and if you are travelling, you will have a passport. So, if you claim that you have a business, the only way you can prove you actually exist is to register. There are many benefits attached to it, so don’t wait until the opportunity comes before you run to our offices,” she said, as quoted by myjoyonline.com.

The Director of Inspection and Compliance at the ORC, Sandrah Koko Quacoe, also emphasised that the Registrar has the power to strike out companies that fail to comply with the law.

ORC to implement key reforms to’ reset’ Ghana’s business environment

She explained that adhering to the Act and filing regularly prevents “unnecessary” sanctions and penalties.

“Update your records with us, make sure you file, comply with the Act, and that will prevent unnecessary penalties. In the worst case, the Registrar has the mandate to strike out companies if they fail to comply,” she warned.

To improve compliance, the ORC is organising registration exercises in various communities to raise awareness and educate business owners on best practices.

“We are bringing registration clinics to all environments. Anytime you want to do something and engage us, we are gladly ready to come there to serve you on the spot,” Banini added.

Why Africa’s free trade pact is still stalled 7 years after signing

0

Alan Kyerematen, a Ghanaian politician and an architect of AfCFTA Alan Kyerematen, a Ghanaian politician and an architect of AfCFTA

When African leaders signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in 2018, it was hailed as a watershed moment, the boldest attempt yet to knit together the continent’s 54 nations into a single market. Seven years later, the dream remains largely on paper.

Alan Kyerematen, Ghana’s former minister of trade and industry and one of the lead architects behind AfCFTA, has lived this journey firsthand.

In an exclusive interview with Sandra Babu-Boateng on The BreakDown on PanaGenius TV, he reflected on the long road from aspiration to reality, and why political will may prove as decisive as economics.

“When the Organization of African Unity was established in 1963, the founding fathers dreamed of moving beyond decolonisation and bringing together the newly independent African countries.

Among their discussions was the importance of trading among themselves. They envisioned not only a continental market but also an African economic community,” he recalled the vision.

Regional blocs like ECOWAS, SADC, COMESA, and the EAC emerged over the decades, but Africa’s share of intra-continental trade stayed stuck below 15%. “The dream of deeper economic integration was still far from reality,” he noted.

His involvement deepened after leaving government in 2011, when the UN Economic Commission for Africa tapped him to lead the African Trade Policy Centre.

“In Africa, we often say it’s become a ‘NATO continent’ — No Action, Talk Only. That was exactly the mindset I wanted to challenge,” the famous Ghanaian politician said.

He and his team pushed not only for a legal framework, which became AfCFTA, but also for an operational framework called Boosting Intra-African Trade. Both were adopted at an AU summit in 2012. But only one gained traction.

“Unfortunately, all the excitement was around the agreement, the legal framework. The operational framework, which was supposed to make the agreement actionable, received much less attention.”

For skeptics, the barriers were daunting. “Many leaders told me, ‘Alan, we know you’ll do a good job, but we’re not sure this will work.’ They pointed out that even with regional economic communities, intra-African trade remained below 15%. So, how could a continental framework succeed where regional ones struggled?”

Kyerematen countered with scale. “A continent-wide market could unlock far greater potential. For example, Ghana might import sausages from Europe rather than from Kenya simply because the two belong to different regional blocs. Expanding to a continental level could eliminate such barriers.”

Despite resistance, the agreement went forward. Today, AfCFTA covers a population of 1.4 billion and a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion. Africa controls 60% of the world’s arable land, a fifth of its forests, and vast reserves of water and minerals. The economic case is overwhelming.

But for Kyerematen, economics alone won’t deliver the transformation. “You cannot have a prosperous Africa without political unity. You cannot have a peaceful, secure Africa without deeper integration. It simply will not happen.”

He points to Europe as a model: sovereign states with their own identities, yet empowered globally by the collective strength of the European Union. “That is why I believe the African Union, in its current form, should be seen as a stepping stone, a transitional phase toward a United States of Africa.”

Seven years after the AfCFTA was signed, progress remains halting. Infrastructure gaps, incomplete customs reforms, and a lack of harmonised regulations continue to slow the pact. Yet Kyerematen insists the opportunity remains historic.

“Whether through a confederation or a federation, political integration is the only way Africa can unlock the full power of the AfCFTA and truly rise as a global economic and geopolitical force.”

NPP must apologise to suspended members and Ghanaians, not just offer amnesty – Arthur Kennedy

0

Physician and political activist, Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) owes suspended members and the Ghanaian public apologies rather than the recently announced general amnesty.

Speaking on JoyNews’ on Monday, August 18, Dr. Kennedy argued that while the amnesty initiative may have been well-intentioned, the party’s real need is reconciliation through accountability.

“I think the intent is good, but the execution was botched. Unity is indispensable to the success of political parties, as history has shown. But I think we owe a lot of people apologies, not just amnesties,” he stated.

He cited former National Chairman Paul Afoko and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong as figures who deserved apologies for their treatment by the party.

“We need to apologise to Ghanaians for running the party as if it were a private club that belongs to a few individuals. A party is a public institution and must be run in a way that attracts people,” he added.

Dr. Kennedy also linked the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat to internal divisions, stressing that leadership must rebuild trust both with its base and the wider electorate.

“In actual fact, the 2024 elections we lost partly because we were divided. Twenty percent of John Mahama’s votes came from old NPP members who never resigned publicly, so they don’t need amnesty. But those votes must be earned back in 2028,” he noted.

He further criticised the amnesty move as inconsistent, recalling that in 2008 the party allowed someone without a membership card to become running mate, while disqualifying other members for not having “developed the party enough.”

According to him, the NPP must make peace not only with suspended members but also with Ghanaians over what he called “bone-headed policies.”

“The same way you suspended and humiliated them, that is the same place you should go and make peace with them. The apologies are important—not only to Afoko and others, but to the people of Ghana, for policies such as spending $100 million on a hole while children still studied under trees and markets remained uncompleted,” he stressed.

On August 16, the NPP announced a general amnesty for all suspended members or those facing disciplinary proceedings as part of efforts to foster unity and reconciliation within the party.

Gov’t unveils 10-year policy to revive Ghana’s textile industry

0

The government is taking steps to restore the country’s once-thriving textiles and garments sector with the introduction of a new policy framework designed to position Ghana as a leading sourcing hub for ethical and sustainable apparel production in West Africa.

Spanning a 10-year implementation period, the draft policy proposes interventions across nine thematic areas, including infrastructure development, cotton cultivation, investment incentives, skills training and trade facilitation.

Among the proposed measures are the establishment of five world-class industrial parks, zero-rated taxes and duties for eligible investors, and the creation of a Ghana Textile Upgradation Fund (G-TUF) to support the modernisation of ageing machinery.

It also introduces a Cotton Development Fund to revive local cotton farming, and a Textile and Garment Sector Development Unit to coordinate activities, attract foreign direct investment, and serve as a one-stop shop for industry stakeholders.

Consequently, a three-day validation workshop has been organised to refine and validate the proposed measures to ensure the final policy reflects the country’s industrial realities and aspirations.

The workshop, which commenced in Accra on Wednesday, August 6, brought together key stakeholders from academia, the financial sector, the garment and textile industry, government agencies, labour unions and development partners.

The finalised policy, once adopted, is expected to provide the clarity, incentives and institutional coordination needed to rebuild the sector and reclaim its role as a cornerstone of the country’s industrial and economic development.

Alignment

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, stressed the need for alignment between industrial operations and national development goals.

“Textiles are a key enterprise that drive the development of any country. If a factory exists and does not follow the policy of the existing government, it means that the factory shouldn’t exist at all,” he said.

Dr Pelpuo also emphasised the importance of the sector in addressing youth unemployment. “This policy must not just be validated, it must be a catalyst to reset the economy, reset the mindset and reset the development path of Ghana,” he stated.

The Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Samson Ahi, said the sector remained one of the country’s most historically significant and economically promising industries.

He explained that while Ghana once had a flourishing textiles and garments industry, only a handful of legacy companies currently remain in operation, with many running below capacity.

Mr Ahi noted that the draft policy was the result of extensive research, stakeholder consultations, and a clear-eyed assessment of global trends. He was confident that it would help address the current challenges through a coherent and competitive framework that would attract investment, boost productivity and position Ghana as a regional hub for ethical and sustainable apparel manufacturing.

Ghana’s crypto bill could set the standard for the continent if done right

Ghana is on the cusp of a regulatory overhaul that could place it among Africa’s most forward-looking economies when it comes to digital assets. With the central bank expected to present a crypto licensing framework to parliament in September 2025, the next few weeks will be pivotal not just for Ghana’s fintech future, but for the broader West African region.

The urgency is well placed. According to Chainalysis data, Ghana recorded over $3 billion in crypto activity between July 2023 and June 2024, a staggering figure that underlines both the appetite for digital assets and the risks of operating without a clear legal framework.

A robust, well-balanced policy could transform this informal momentum into sustainable economic value in the country, expanding access to capital, improving financial inclusion, and generating new revenue streams for the state.

If passed in, the framework would permit only registered exchanges and wallet providers to operate legally, subject to capital thresholds and anti-money laundering requirements, keeping Ghana off the FATF grey list.

It’s a commendable step toward consumer protection and financial stability. However, the usual concerns are beginning to surface, particularly around the enforcement capacity, the ability of local startups to meet stringent licensing conditions, and the risk that an overly rigid approach could push innovation underground.

How Licensing Passporting for virtual asset service providers who already have licences in recognised jurisdictions is also yet to be seen, as such a provision is a catalytic game-changer for the African continent.

The current draft is said to offer clarity on how supervision will be carried out and how smaller players and new businesses can be supported.

This will be covered by a sandbox model licence, which has been introduced to avoid a divide between large, well-capitalized firms and grassroots fintech innovators.

This would also encourage incubation for local stablecoin issuers, which Binance has encouraged local stablecoins to build on its BNB Chain.

Larry Cooke, Africa’s Head of Legal at Binance, says “Ghana has an opportunity to showcase to the world and the continent what robust and fair legislation looks like that is supported by stable infrastructure, innovative solutioning, and role modelled leadership”.

There’s precedent to learn from. Global exchanges like Binance have voluntarily implemented Know-Your-Customer (KYC) protocols, user education initiatives, and fraud prevention tools across several African markets.

In Kenya, Binance has actively engaged with regulators and the local Virtual Assets Chamber of Commerce during the drafting of the Virtual Asset Service Providers Bill, supporting efforts to improve user protection and financial education.

The question now is whether Ghana’s framework will foster similar cooperation or risk deterring it.

This push toward regulation comes amid increased dialogue between the public and private sectors. In recent months, the Bank of Ghana and various stakeholders have held consultations on draft proposals, including a licensing regime for virtual asset service providers.

These engagements are widely seen as crucial to shaping legislation that balances investor protection with the need to encourage innovation and enable cross-border trade.

With the central bank expected to present the framework to Parliament in September, sustained collaboration between regulators and industry players will be critical to getting it right.

The opportunity is clear: digital assets can be a powerful lever for economic transformation. Now it’s up to policymakers to match the momentum on the ground, without losing sight of the local realities that could make or break the success of this bold regulatory shift.

The referee stopped the game in the first half after Semenyo said he was racially abused by someone in the crowd

The Ghana Football Association has condemned the abuse directed at Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo by a Liverpool at Anfield last Friday.

The GFA in a statement said “We stand firmly with our Black Stars forward, Antoine Semenyo, following the racial abuse he suffered at Anfield.”

The statement added that “In the face of provocation, Antoine showed strength, grace, and unity. On the pitch, he scored twice; off it, he reminded us of what football truly represents — respect, solidarity, and love for the beautiful game.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has also strongly condemned and pledged his full support to the 24-year-old.

“I am here for Antoine, whenever he needs it, and we are here as a club to deal with it in the best way possible because it shouldn’t happen,” the Dutch defender told Sky Sports. “But we stand with him completely.”

Merseyside Police confirmed that a 47-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in connection with the incident.

Both clubs, alongside the Premier League, have issued strong statements condemning the abuse. The league has also launched a full investigation into the matter.

Subsidise poultry feed to meet annual national production demand

0

Baffour Kwadwo Damoah Afari, Sanaahene (sub-chief) of Dormaa Traditional Area in the Bono Region, has called on the government to subsidise poultry feed for farmers to produce more and to meet the growing national poultry demand.

He noted that poultry farmers were unable to produce more because of the high cost of feed, saying with the subsidy, the farmers could improve productivity.

Baffour Afari indicated that presently farmers could only produce between 57,000 metric tons and 60,000 metric tons of the expected annual national demand of 460,000 metric tons.

The chief made the call when speaking at the opening session of a two-day maiden poultry business clinic at Dormaa-Ahenkro, jointly organised by the Business Resource Centre, Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly and the Dormaa Poultry Farmers Association.

It was attended by traditional authorities, input dealers, financial institutions, poultry farmers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector and the poultry value chain.

Baffour Afari expressed concern that poultry farmers spent about 80 percent of capital on feeding, saying the importation of low-cost poultry products like day old chicks, poultry meat and feed supplement as well as eggs from countries like Argentina, Poland, Brazil and Holland were also another challenge confronting the nation’s poultry sector.

Other pressing challenges include, poultry disease, lack of insurance for poultry farms and birds, poor farm management practices, as well as stealing of eggs.

“These challenges drive marketing and sales control to the disadvantage of domestic poultry producers”, Baffour Afari stated, and stressed the need for the government to do more to make the sector more attractive and to boost farmers’ confidence and productivity as well.

Baffour Afari lauded the organization of the poultry clinic, saying that remained crucial to improving and turning round the economic prospect of the nation’s poultry sector.

He told the farmers that the Dormaa campus of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) had a dedicated department for agriculture and advised them to visit the department and to seek information, knowledge and expertise to transform their businesses.

Baffour Afari advised the poultry farmers in the area to also create a realistic data base for their poultry business to aid effective business decision-making and enable them to receive support from development partners.

He said truthful data on their operations would further guarantee the sustainability, growth and expansion of their businesses, urging them to form cooperatives and to share information among themselves.

“Sharing real data will enable them to also benefit from government intervention and support as well as get some tax incentives”, he stated.

Daniel Sena Tsorme, the Head of the BRC, took the participants through various classifications of Micro, Small, Medium and Enterprises (MSMEs), their differences, annual turnovers, and fixed assets value.

He said the Center would continue to promote the poultry industry in the Dormaa Central Municipality by highlighting its prospects, challenges and opportunities as well as producing documentary films about the sector.

“We are concentrating on Dormaa Central for now, however poultry farmers in Dormaa East and Dormaa West Districts can join us if they want to”, he stated, saying that the center would also work to help create a reliable data base that would drive investments.

Tsorme also advised the farmers to leverage social media opportunities, saying the center also had intentions to create a social media handle to promote the industry in a more positive way.

He urged, especially the women farmers to acquire the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA)’s certification and licensing of their pack house or warehouse for eggs to ensure that they meet the required standards.

The Ashanti Kingdom (Asanteman), led by its ruler, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked the sixth Akwasidae festival of 2025 on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Unlike the usual pride and pageantry that is seen during the Akwasidae celebration, which showcases the worth of Asanteman, the 6th Akwasidae was more solemn due to the demise of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The Akwasidae was marked with all attendees, including the Asantehene, clad in black and brown attire, without the usual display of ornaments, in honour of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

According to a report by opemsuo.com, Akwasidae celebrations during a state of mourning are referred to as “Akwasidae Tuntum” or “Kuntunkuni Dae.”

Kuntunkuni Dae depicts the Kingdom’s state of mourning of a queen mother or a king, when the commemoration of the Akwasidae festival, which is celebrated every 40 days, coincides with the death of a royal of the kingdom.

The report indicated that the Asantehene, after performing the required rites for the festival, sat in state at the Manhyia Palace to receive homage from participants.

Despite the state of mourning, the celebration saw the beauty of the Fontomfrom music and dance, with Nana Amponsah Kwaw, Atwima Kwanwomahene; Nana Nuben Sra II, Tredehene; Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua, Kontomponiaferehene; and other traditional rulers, all displaying their dancing prowess.

Executioners of Asanteman also came to show their respect to the King, who mourned his traditional mother with the Aprede dance.

M23 rebels suspend peace talks with DR Congo government

The M23 has set up its own administration in areas it controls The M23 has set up its own administration in areas it controls

The main rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the M23, has walked away from peace talks with the government, saying it will not return unless the authorities adhere to a previous ceasefire deal.

Fighting between the two sides escalated in January, when the M23 captured large parts of the mineral-rich east, including the regional capital Goma.

In Qatar last month, the rebels and the government signed a ceasefire agreement, intended as a step towards a permanent peace deal.

But on Monday, as negotiations were set to resume, the M23 said its representatives were not present in Qatar.

He accused the authorities of not respecting the provisions contained in the ceasefire deal, but DR Congo’s military denies this charge.

Kanyuka alleged that government forces had continued to attack rebel positions, despite the agreement stating that both sides must refrain from assaults.

However, the Congolese armed forces accused the M23 of launching attacks almost daily in the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.

The Qatar peace deal was supposed to be signed by Monday.

On Sunday, an unnamed official from Qatar told the AFP news agency that a draft agreement had been shared with DR Congo and the M23.

The agreement runs alongside a peace deal between DR Congo and Rwanda, which was brokered by the US in June.

DR Congo, the UN and numerous Western powers have accused Rwanda of backing the M23.

Despite participating in the Washington peace talks, Rwanda has long denied the allegations against it.

The Washington peace deal, hailed by President Donald Trump as a “glorious triumph”, could grant the US access to DR Congo’s vast mineral wealth.

However, it is the latest in a long line of failed peace deals in the region.

During the ongoing conflict, thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of civilians forced from their homes, the UN says.
