Should NDC have pulled out like NPP in Tamale Central? – Data insights

0

GhanaWeb Feature by Ishmael Batoma:

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s largest opposition political party, announced on August 11, 2025, that it would not be participating in the upcoming parliamentary by-election for the Tamale Central constituency.

The by-election was necessitated by the tragic death of the Member of Parliament (MP), Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians.

The party stated that its National Steering Committee made the decision to withdraw from the Tamale Central by-election, a seat held by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), based on several factors.

One of the reasons was the “belief that it would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP” and to also “ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement for the good people of Tamale Central,” as a tribute to the departed MP.

EC sets September 30 for Tamale Central by-election

Following the move by the New Patriotic Party, a section of the public, mostly proponents of the party, including its leading members, have called on the NDC to also withdraw from the Akwatia by-election, whose seat became vacant due to the demise of NPP MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, based on the same reasons listed for Tamale Central.

Nevertheless, the ruling NDC rebuffed these calls.

Should the NDC have heeded the calls for their withdrawal from the Akwatia by-election? Or was there a hidden reason for the NPP’s withdrawal from the Tamale Central by-election, which was not stated in the party’s press statement?

This article analyses the history of parliamentary elections in these two constituencies to ascertain the ‘true reason(s)’ for the decision made by the two leading political parties in Ghana.

History of Tamale Central Parliamentary Elections:

The Tamale Central Constituency was created prior to the 2004 general elections and thus has seen six general elections.

The data shows that the constituency has seen only NDC MPs since its creation. Alhassan Wayo Seini was the constituency’s first MP after winning the seat in 2004. He was followed by Inusah Abdulai Bistav Fuseini, who won the 2008, 2012, and 2016 parliamentary elections. Then came the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who won the 2020 and 2024 elections.

The data shows that the NDC has been consistent in retaining the seat. Its worst performance was when it won with fewer than 10,000 votes in the 2020 election.

Past by-election in Tamale Central:

There was a by-election in Tamale Central in 2006 when the sitting National Democratic Congress MP for the constituency, Prof Alhassan Wayo Seini, decided to quit the party and cross over to the New Patriotic Party.

The NPP did not contest in this by-election. Prof Wayo Seini, who said he was going to do all he could to go back to the NPP, where he served as the National Vice Chairman, contested as an independent candidate, but he lost badly. He was beaten by the NDC’s Inusah Abdulai Bistav Fuseini.

History of Akwatia Parliamentary Elections:

The Akwatia Constituency has had representation in the House since the 1st Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana. This implies that the constituency has had 9 parliamentary elections.

Data shows that, contrary to assertions that Akwatia is a stronghold of the NPP, the parliamentary election in Akwatia is very competitive. Out of the 9 elections held, the NPP has won 5, while the NDC has won 4.

The NDC’s Gilbert Kwasi Agyei won the 1992 election, which was boycotted by the NPP. The NDC won the Akwatia seat again in 1996 with Alhaji Mohammed Erzuah Siam.

The NPP, represented by Kinston Akomeng Kissi, took the Akwatia seat in 2000. Kinston Akomeng Kissi retained the seat for the NPP in 2004. The party again won the seat in 2008 with Kofi Asare as their candidate.

NDC’s Baba Jamal ousted the NPP candidate in the 2012 election. In the 2016 election, the NPP retook the seat with Mercy Adu-Gyamfi as their candidate. NDC’s Henry Boakye won the seat back for his party in 2020. The late Ernest Kumi won the seat for the NPP in 2024.

The election results show that parliamentary elections in Akwatia have historically been keenly contested between the NDC and the NPP.

The largest victory of the NDC in an election both parties contested was in 1996 — 9,325 votes, while the NPP’s largest victory was in 2016 — 5,528.

‘We thank you for withdrawing from Tamale Central by-election but we are contesting Akwatia’ – Nketiah

Conclusion

The analysis above shows that it would have been nearly impossible for the NPP to win the Tamale Central by-election, which is slated for September 30, 2025.

History shows that this is not the first time the NPP has boycotted a by-election in Tamale Central.

In addition to the reason the party gave for its withdrawal from the pending by-election, it is safe to say that the NPP pulled out of the election because it was a near-impossible task.

The Akwatia seat, on the other hand, is more competitive and can be described as a swing seat, as the data shows.

Both parties have won the seat in the past, and the NDC pulling out of it would have been a wrong political move.

Compared to the Tamale Central 2024 election, where the NDC won by a margin of over 35,000 votes, the NPP won the Akwatia seat with only 2,063.

Being the party in power, the NDC would rightly have the confidence of overturning these 2,000 votes.

“I sat on TV for 2years, 2 freaking years, explaining the modalities and dynamics of the @gmausa. I offered directions on which portal to get all relevant information on the scheme.

‘How is an office going to monitor prophecies?’ – Cardinal Appiah Turkson on govt’s directive

0

Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson is a Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at the Vatican Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson is a Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at the Vatican

Renowned Ghanaian clergyman, Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, has reacted to a directive by the government for prophets in the country to submit their prophecies that have implications on ‘national security’ for review.

In a JoyNews interview on August 19, 2025, Cardinal Turkson questioned the specific role of a new government office established to receive prophecies.

He explained that prophecies are mostly confused with premonitions.

He said prophecies are given to promote the church, to warn of upcoming events, and to educate, among others.

‘How are you going to review prophecy’ – Kwesi Pratt clashes with Afriyie Ankrah

Premonitions, on the other hand, he noted, are gifts of seeing the future, but the people with this gift cannot do anything to change what is coming in most cases.

He added that what he advises people with such gifts to do is to pray and intercede for the people involved in such revelations by God because He (God) is merciful.

“I respect the consideration that led them to this. I have not been privy to it and I have not had the chance to consider the factors and the elements that led to this type of thing, but as a priest, I find that to be a very challenging task.

“How is an office going to monitor and discern prophecies? If prophecies are not just from the Christian denomination. If you put this under the traditional religion, they also receive prophecies. And then you include those who are not prophets but have gifts of premonition – this is a gift which is different from prophecy. Premonition is a natural gift that a lot of people have and exercise, but they don’t refer to it as prophecy.

“In my own small way, in my office with the windows and door locks and the air conditioning on, and sometimes, I will see a flying insect from nowhere. Shortly thereafter, we will have news of death. So, what can I do? Will I perceive it as a prophecy? I won’t call this a prophecy,” he added.

’70 to 80% of prophecies my office has received lack substance’ – Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah

Cardinal Turkson also noted that the good thing about the directive of the government is that it will help prevent certain information from reaching the public, which might cause fear and panic.

“There are so many events related to the knowledge about the future. It comes as a prophecy, it comes as a premonition, it comes in so many different forms. Now, when you say you’ve created an office with people to manage this, the advantage is that it just saves that from social media and all the interpretations. So, you channel these types of things in a way that can reduce their impact, so that is very valid. But if this office has the additional task of determining which is true and which is not true, which is valid and which is not valid, then that is a tough one,” he reiterated.

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a trend attributed to the appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced the gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, with the ultimate goal of strengthening the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the BoG announced the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢10,028.93.

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,841.00, down from GH¢19,323.97.

• The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢37,958.61.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations; one ounce, half ounce, and quarter ounce and can be purchased through commercial banks.

Malema shifts tone as immigration tensions rise

0

South African Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema South African Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema

Firebrand South African opposition leader Julius Malema has asked Zimbabweans to seek employment in their own country. It is a pointer to a shifting political stance by a politician otherwise known for Pan-African rhetoric and a signal to mounting pressure on politicians in Africa’s largest economy to address an escalating illegal immigration crisis.

Outbreaks of xenophobia led by an extremist political group known as Operation Dudula (which means “force out” in isiZulu) have brought renewed attention to illegal immigrants in South Africa, most of whom are from Zimbabwe.

According to the results of South Africa’s 2022 census, Zimbabweans are by far the largest immigrant population, at over one million, or 35 per cent of foreigners, followed by Mozambicans (18.7 percent), BaSotho (10.2 percent), Malawians (8.9 percent), and Britons (2.8 percent).

Mr Malema, whose Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party has in the past gone against the grain in defending immigrants from Zimbabwe at a time of growing xenophobia, now says South Africans should be given priority when it comes to employment. He was reacting to a scandal in Limpopo, a province bordering Zimbabwe, where the mayor of the City of Polokwane, John Mpe, was accused of awarding tenders to foreign-owned companies. The companies included one owned by a Zimbabwean whose partner is a senior manager in the municipality.

“We don’t disagree that Zimbabweans should be given jobs, but they should be given jobs in their municipalities in Harare and other areas so we have opportunities to get jobs in our own municipalities,” he said. “When we say we want jobs where we pay for services, we are not saying we don’t want Zimbabweans. We are saying we should be given first preference before everyone else to get jobs.”

South Africa is battling a lack of jobs, with the latest statistics indicating that the unemployment rate rose for the second quarter in a row to 33.2 percent in April-June, up from 32.9 percent in January-March. The country’s coalition government, formed by the African National Congress (ANC) and the then main opposition Democratic Alliance after the 2024 election, has largely struggled to address joblessness.

This has seen frustration creeping in among citizens and a rise in popularity of organisations such as Operation Dudula, which has recently been hounding foreigners out of public hospitals.

Mr Malema’s weekend statements, however, contradicted his past stance on foreign nationals, especially Zimbabweans. In 2023, the former ANC youth leader encouraged South African employers to hire Zimbabweans while still giving South Africans priority.

“We want to emphasise to the owners of restaurants that no one should stop employing Zimbabweans and say the EFF said they don’t want them,” he said. “We want Zimbabweans to work in South Africa. It’s their home. They should make no apologies about hiring Zimbabweans or any other African brother or sister. In doing so, they must be considerate that there are locals, who must at all times be given preference.”

Zandile Dabula, the Operation Dudula president, recently said they were targeting Zimbabweans in their campaigns because the immigrants behaved as if they were entitled to be in South Africa.

“I don’t know why Zimbabweans think they are special,” Ms Dabula said. “Every time you talk of foreigners, they are the first ones to respond. Immediately, when you talk of illegal immigrants, the first response you will get, even on a social media platform, is a Zimbabwean. They feel so entitled that they are supposed to be here.”

Political parties that push for a hard-liner stance on immigration have been growing in popularity in South Africa in recent years, and even some ministers in the coalition government support groups like Operation Dudula.

Zimbabweans have been migrating to neighbouring South Africa for decades to seek economic opportunities, but the volume of people crossing the porous border began to increase steadily post-2000 when the country’s economic fortunes began taking a nosedive. Out of desperation, people risk their lives daily to cross the crocodile-infested Limpopo River, which divides the two countries.

South Africa regularly deports Zimbabweans who are caught violating immigration laws, but most of them quickly find their way back. In 2009, South Africa gave special permits to nearly 200,000 Zimbabwean immigrants that allowed them to work and live in the country as a way of addressing the problem of undocumented foreign nationals. Pretoria was forced to extend the validity of the permits last year after the holders took the government to court, challenging moves to end the dispensation. The lifespan of the permits has since been extended to the end of next year.

The Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has reiterated his party’s resolve to win the forthcoming Akwatia by-election.

The Akwatia by-election, which is slated for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, was necessitated by the untimely death of the late Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Ernest Kumi died at the Lister Hospital in Accra on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a short illness.

Speaking to UTV on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Salam Mustapha said the NPP cannot afford to lose Akwatia, as the consequences would be spiritually dire.

He suggested that the late MP’s soul would not forgive the party if they fail to retain the seat in his memory.

“The spirit of Ernest Kumi will not rest until his seat is retained!” he said.

Consequently, the NPP youth organiser urged constituents of Akwatia to come out in large numbers to vote for them.

NPP, NDC pick candidates for Akwatia by-election

Meanwhile, both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have picked their candidates for the Akwatia by-election.

Solomon Kwame Asumadu has been endorsed by the NPP as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election without holding a primary.

According to the party, the decision was made after stakeholder consultations, where a proposal to hold primaries was rejected in favour of a consensus approach.

Solomon Kwame Asumadu is the Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company.

The NDC, on the other hand, has also elected Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a private legal practitioner, to face off with the NPP candidate.

The Akwatia constituency is historically a swing seat, with both the NDC and NPP winning it in previous elections.

However, in the 2024 elections, the late Ernest Kumi won it for the NPP after defeating the NDC’s Henry Boakye.

NPP vows to retain Akwatia seat

Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the opposition NPP, has affirmed the party’s readiness for the upcoming Akwatia parliamentary by-election.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Mr Frimpong said the NPP has completed its groundwork and is fully prepared to challenge the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.

NDC poised to win Akwatia by-election

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that the NDC expressed its determination to claim the Akwatia seat in honour of the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah.

Rashid Tanko-Computer said the late minister’s strategies had significantly shaped the party’s electoral approach.

He vowed to continue Dr Omane Boamah’s legacy and honour him by ensuring the NDC won the Akwatia by-election.

Harbour View Residents Plea For Demolition Halt

0

Boye-Doku (first from left) and some concerned Harbour View Residents Association members

The Harbour View Residents Association is seeking clemency and a halt to the ongoing demolition of homes in their community, citing immense human suffering and potential humanitarian crises.

‎‎‎Chairman of the Harbour View Residents Association, Jonathan Boye-Doku, in a press conference, appealed to the government to consider the humanitarian implications of the ongoing demolition exercise.

‎‎According to him, despite acknowledging the importance of preserving Ghana’s wetlands, they believe that the demolition of 10.5 acres of land, affecting hundreds of families, is an extreme measure that warrants reconsideration.

‎‎‎He emphasised that most residents developed their lands before 2023, unaware of the specific boundaries and international significance of the wetland. Stakeholder engagements were held in 2021 and 2022, with a roadmap for a mutual understanding regarding a generally accepted core boundary in 2023. However, further encroachment occurred due to reliance on traditional authorities’ guidance.

‎‎Proposed Solutions

‎Mr. Boye-Doku reiterated that they are committed to collaborating with the government to implement robust solutions.

‎‎”We will engage in final stakeholders’ meetings to establish a clear and enforceable mutual boundary.

Additionally, we will work on embankment and flood protection measures to mitigate potential flooding occurrences. Furthermore, we will undertake lagoon and river dredging to restore the wetland’s ecological function.

“We will also implement sedimentation control measures as part of our sustainable solutions, and moreover, we will explore innovative sustainable solutions to environmental conservation, ensuring a comprehensive approach to protecting the environment while addressing community needs,” he mentioned.

‎‎He explained that these initiatives demonstrate their commitment to finding a balanced solution that respects both environmental imperatives and community livelihoods.

‎‎Recommendations

‎”We humbly recommend that the government consider two key proposals. Firstly, regularising structures outside the core area boundary could generate significant revenue for environmental conservation efforts. Secondly, the regularised portion could be maintained as a Ramsar site, ensuring compliance with environmental goals and promoting sustainable development,” he recommended.

‎‎Notably, Mr. Boye-Doku mentioned that, the built-up areas in their community translate to approximately 8,000-9,000 plots, presenting a significant opportunity for revenue generation through regularisation. This revenue can be channeled towards critical environmental conservation efforts, while maintaining the regularised portion as a Ramsar site to ensure compliance with environmental goals.

‎‎He stressed that, they are confident that through collaborative efforts, they can find a way forward that respects environmental imperatives while safeguarding the livelihoods and dignity of the residents of Harbour View Residents Association.

‎‎”We implore your compassionate consideration of the immense human suffering caused by the ongoing demolition and request for clemency, thereby halting the ongoing demolition and allowing for a more humane and equitable resolution to this complex issue,” he appealed to the government.

‎‎He humbly appealed to the media to serve as a platform for the community, bringing their struggles and concerns to the forefront and facilitating a dialogue with the government.

‎‎The Secretary of the Nungua Oofu Wulomo, Nii Okai, respectfully appealed to the President to consider a pressing matter regarding state-acquired land that has been occupied by families in need of shelter and livelihood.

‎‎”Despite previous administrations’ tolerance, the current demolition exercise is displacing entire families, including vulnerable individuals, without compassion or adequate resettlement,” he said.

2025 All Ministers Conference set to shape Ghana’s future

0

The stage is set for the 2025 All Ministers Conference (AMC), scheduled for September 8 to 10, 2025, at the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC), Gomoa Fetteh, under the theme “Building the Church for Impact” (Matthew 16:16-18).

Hosted by The Church of Pentecost in collaboration with the Lausanne Movement – Ghana, this year’s edition is expected to chart a new course for the Church’s contribution to Ghana’s development and moral direction.

Chairman of The Church of Pentecost and President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has underscored the urgency of the conference in a nation where 71.2 per cent of the population professes Christianity.

“The presence of the Church must be felt not only in the conversion of souls but also in the conversion of society. As salt of the earth and light of the world, our mandate is to bring real transformation to our nation,” he stated.

Since its inception in 2022, the AMC has grown into a platform where church leaders and national stakeholders discuss pressing issues of moral vision, social justice, and development.

The 2023 edition, which explored “Moral Vision and National Development – the Role of the Church”, brought together high-profile leaders, including two former presidents, the Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, political party leaders, and representatives of the National Chief Imam.

The gathering produced a draft of a National Moral Vision, currently under review by a technical team drawn from diverse Christian and academic backgrounds.

In 2024, the AMC extended its reach through regional conferences in Kumasi, Takoradi, and Accra, drawing more than 6,000 ministers and church leaders.

These “mobile” gatherings widened participation and deepened the Church’s engagement in national issues.

The 2025 AMC is expected to build on these gains, providing not only spiritual inspiration but also a platform for shaping the ethical and developmental agenda of the nation. With seasoned speakers and leaders from across the denominational spectrum, the conference promises to redefine how the Ghanaian church engages society.

As anticipation builds, many observers believe that this year’s AMC could mark a turning point in mobilising the collective strength of the Christian community toward nation-building, making it one of the most significant church gatherings of the year.

Ghana to import one million metric tons of rice – Report

Rice has now become Ghana’s second most important cereal after maize Rice has now become Ghana’s second most important cereal after maize

Ghana is expected to import one million metric tons of rice during the 2025/2026 season, according to the latest annual Grain and Feed report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

This figure represents more than half of the country’s total rice demand, despite a notable increase in domestic production.

The report projects that milled rice output will rise by 18 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 900,000 metric tons.

However, consumption is forecast to grow to 1.80 million metric tons, up from 1.75 million, driven by population growth and shifting dietary habits.

Rice has now become Ghana’s second most important cereal after maize, with per capita consumption reaching 51 kilograms.

Cedi gains push down BoG gold coin prices

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has predicted normal-to-below-normal rainfall and extended dry spells in 2025, raising concerns about crop sustainability and the resilience of farming systems.

Rice prices have also seen dramatic fluctuations. Between March 2024 and January 2025, the average price of a 100kg bag surged from GH¢200 to GH¢650, a 225 percent increase.

Although prices eased to GH¢400 by March 2025, they remained double what they were a year earlier.

Imported rice continues to dominate the market, accounting for 70 percent of sales in Ghana. Major sources include Vietnam, India, and Thailand. Local producers struggle to compete due to higher costs and inconsistent quality.

The USDA report highlights persistent structural challenges such as poor irrigation infrastructure, low levels of mechanisation, and weak processing capacity.

Bawumia and Fante Comedy

FORMER Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has finally met Ghanaian TikToker, Fante Comedy, following his release from police custody on Monday, August 18.

This comes following the TikToker’s live video that had people verbally abusing President Mahama and issuing threats to kill him and his entire family.

According to information available to BEATWAVES, Dr. Bawumia, after welcoming Fante Comedy to his campaign office in Accra, admonished him to exercise decorum when addressing national issues.

Dr. Bawumia has urged members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding amid what he describes as growing political intimidation.

In a message to party loyalists, Dr. Bawumia said, “I charge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution.”

Fante Comedy was arrested by the police on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. He was arrested alongside two others in connection with allegations of issuing death threats and publishing false news related to the August 6 helicopter crash.

The arrest was part of ongoing investigations by the Ghana Police Service following heightened public discourse and misinformation surrounding the incident.

Following Fante Comedy’s arrest, the National Youth Wing of the NPP, in a presser, expressed disappointment at his arrest and detention.

The National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, urged the Ghana Police Service to uphold their motto of ‘Service with Integrity’.

We’re ready, no room for violence – IGP assures – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the public of the Ghana Police Service’s readiness to provide a safe and secure environment for the upcoming by-election in Akwatia in the Eastern Region.

He gave the assurance after the Police Management Board (POMAB) visited the High-Risk Operation Training Centre at Akyerematen on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, to assess the preparedness of police personnel ahead of the polls.

The visit, according to the Service, formed part of broader measures to ensure maximum security and maintain law and order before, during, and after the election.

According to the IGP, the Police Service remains committed to safeguarding all stakeholders in the electoral process, including voters, electoral officers, political parties, and the media.

“We have brought men here, and they are trained on how to handle arms. As we are going to the election ground, we decided to come and sharpen our skills for the by-election.

“Today, they will move to Akwatia and assess all the threats just to let the country know that we are ready for the election, and all the threats we hear from social media have given us the room to prepare and to remove fear for the electorate in Akwatia that nobody can come here to cause any trouble,” he said.

On Tuesday, August 19, the Ghana Police Service held a meeting with political parties to review preparations for the Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2.

After the meeting, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, urged the Police Service to act decisively against those involved in the recent electoral violence at Ablekuma North to restore confidence in security arrangements.

“We said that thugs who were linked to the NDC, who caused mayhem, their images are all over, the videos all over, and as we speak, the Ghana Police Service has not effected any decisive arrest. We saw a communique that stated that they have arrested two persons. We do not know of any update. Were they put before the court? Are they on remand?

“We don’t know anything, so we were very strong on this particular point. The IGP said that they are very serious about it and that we should even expect that by the close of today, some arrests will be made. If they want us to rely on these assurances, then they must work on what happened in Ablekuma North.

“The Ghana Police Service should give us that confidence that they have dealt with the Ablekuma North issue,” he stated.

The NDC, however, called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to strengthen security measures to prevent a repeat of such incidents.

The party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko-Computer, said the EC must ensure that individuals without accreditation, including former state officials, are barred from the inner perimeter of polling stations.

“We are very clear in our mind that we, the NDC, are committed to the peace plan and the promises they have put in place, but we were mindful of the activities of our opponents who will come in there with dangerous weapons. Recall what happened in Ablekuma North, which triggered all these problems.

“One of the leaders, Hawa Koomson, had pepper spray in her bag. We are telling them that they need to beef up security and make sure that the fact that you are a former MP or Minister, once you don’t have accreditation, you have no business at the polling station,” he stated.

Protect health workers, but don’t neglect patients – Suhuyini to GMA

Hamza Suhuyini is a Communications Team Member of the NDC Hamza Suhuyini is a Communications Team Member of the NDC

Communications Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini, has called on the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to give equal attention to the welfare of patients as it does to the protection of medical professionals.

His call follows an incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), where a staff member was allegedly attacked after claim of medical negligence involving a patient brought to the emergency ward.

The case has generated public debate and prompted the GMA to threaten a nationwide withdrawal of services in protest against increasing assaults on health workers.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Suhuyini said that while the protection of health workers is important, the concerns of patients and their families should not be disregarded.

“While the protection of health workers is important, the concerns of patients and their families should not be overlooked,” he stated.

He noted that frustrations leading to confrontations in hospitals often arise from poor communication and limited engagement between medical staff and patients’ relatives.

“The time has come for the Ghana Medical Association to be responsive not only to the needs of their practitioners. Clearly, inherent in their objectives is also the responsibility to protect clients’ interests and users of these hospitals,” he said.

Suhuyini explained that inadequate communication leaves families uninformed about delays, capacity issues, or shortages of medical resources, which heightens tensions during emergencies.

He urged the GMA to strengthen engagement between health professionals and patients’ families to help reduce misunderstandings and a repeat of similar incidents.

Uncle Ebo Whyte Recounts Career Setback After False Allegations

0

James Ebo Whyte

Renowned playwright and marriage counsellor, James Ebo Whyte, popularly known as Uncle Ebo Whyte, has revealed how false accusations once cost him his job and left him unemployed for over a year.

Speaking on The Career Trail on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, he described the episode as one of the darkest periods of his life.

After studying Statistics at the University of Ghana, Uncle Ebo began his career at Asempa Publishers under Rev. Peter Parker. Six years later, he was recruited by another publishing firm, but what seemed a career boost ended abruptly.

“After four to five years, they fired me. They devised eight serious charges that portrayed me as the worst rogue ever. None of it was true,” he said.

He attributed the dismissal to envy after impressing the company’s foreign partners during a trip to the United States. “They requested that I represent the company at annual meetings. Somebody must have thought, ‘What if he goes again?’ So they decided to take me out,” he recounted.

Although a court later ruled that the company had no basis for terminating his appointment, the decision did little to restore his reputation. “I was jobless for one and a half years. I’ve always run a single-income home, so it was very difficult,” he noted.

Despite the hardship, Uncle Ebo believes the experience laid the foundation for his future. “That dismissal, as painful as it was, marked the true beginning of my life,” he said, indicating that it eventually paved the way for Roverman Productions, his theatre company.

Finance Ministry, UN Deepen Partnership

0

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

The Ministry of Finance has held a high-level strategic engagement with United Nations agencies, funds, and programmes operating in the country to strengthen development cooperation and advance the country’s national growth agenda.

In a statement released Monday, August 18, 2025, the UN agencies said the day-long meeting reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to inclusive growth, coordinated planning, and sustainable transformation, while also providing a platform to align government priorities with those of development partners and improve accountability.

According to the statement, Ghana’s development priorities remain closely tied to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

However, officials noted that fragmented approaches and weak coordination among stakeholders could undermine impact.

The engagement therefore sought to address those challenges by reinforcing the UN’s central role in supporting national development, the statement indicated.

It added that the discussions, attended by Finance Ministry officials, heads of UN agencies, and technical experts, focused on improving coordination, avoiding duplication of efforts, and streamlining multi-stakeholder collaboration.

The statement said a key outcome was a renewed commitment to align UN support directly with Ghana’s Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework to ensure resources are directed where they are most needed.

It pointed out that participants highlighted the importance of data-driven programming, harmonized planning cycles, predictable financing, and stronger accountability mechanisms as essential tools for ensuring impactful and sustainable development.

Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Apem, underscored the government’s appreciation for the UN’s partnership.

“We recognise that the UN System’s support is catalytic, and our partnership signifies the collective commitment we share towards achieving Ghana’s inclusive national development agenda and the SDGs,” he said.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Zia Choudhury, pledged continued collaboration, noting that stronger partnerships were key to achieving results.

“This strategic engagement reflects our unwavering commitment to building stronger, more coordinated partnerships with the Government of Ghana. By aligning our efforts and deepening collaboration, we can accelerate Ghana’s development agenda and ensure that no one is left behind,” he stated.

The statement disclosed that stakeholders reaffirmed confidence in Ghana’s resilience and transformative potential, pledging to work together to advance good governance, economic resilience, and social inclusion in pursuit of a prosperous and sustainable future.

President John Dramani Mahama, in a keynote address, positioned Ghana as the prime gateway for Japanese businesses seeking entry into the West African and wider African markets.

“Ghana is a stable, democratic, business-friendly gateway to West Africa,” President Mahama said.

He emphasised the country’s strategic location, macroeconomic stability, and ongoing reforms designed to significantly improve the ease of doing business.

To facilitate Japanese investment, the President announced a set of concrete commitments, including fast-track approvals for projects, readily available industrial sites, sovereign guarantees, and innovative blended financing frameworks.

He, however, called for reciprocity, urging Japanese investors to commit to local content and technology transfer agreements to build the capacity of Ghanaian workers and managers.

“My three requests are simple. Pilot with us, partner to scale, and invest in people,” President Mahama stated.

Echoing the President’s assurances, the Chief Executive Officer of the GIPC, Simon Madjie, presented a detailed investment pitch, outlining two central pillars of Ghana’s economic strategy: the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+) and the Big Push Agenda.

Mr Madjie explained that the 24H+ initiative is designed to extend business operations beyond traditional hours to boost productivity, create jobs, and enhance market access. He assured investors of accompanying financial incentives such as tax rebates, duty waivers, and export bonuses.

He further elaborated on the Big Push Agenda, a US$10 billion infrastructure plan aimed at bridging the nation’s infrastructure gap and enhancing competitiveness, with a strong focus on transport, logistics, water systems, agriculture, and energy.

The GIPC CEO detailed a wide range of incentives for investors, including corporate tax holidays for strategic sectors such as agro-processing and renewable energy, location-based tax reductions for businesses established outside Accra and Tema, and customs duty exemptions on machinery and equipment.

He also highlighted specific, ready-to-invest projects such as the Volta Economic Corridor, the Legon Pharmaceutical Innovation Park, and the Kumasi Machinery & Technology Park.

Key sectors identified for Japanese investment included automotive and electric vehicle assembly, agro-industrial parks and food processing, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, the digital economy, and tourism development.

The presentation was widely acknowledged by participants for its clarity and strategic depth. Several Japanese firms are reported to have immediately expressed interest in initiating feasibility studies and pilot projects in Ghana, signalling renewed momentum in Ghana-Japan economic cooperation.

Paul Pogba ‘forgives’ brothers after spiritual attacks and extortion plot

Months after one of the most painful family betrayals in modern football, AS Monaco midfielder, Paul Pogba has publicly signaled forgiveness for his brothers.

The French midfielder, who was at the centre of a shocking extortion case involving his elder brother Mathias and childhood friends, shared warm posts on Instagram that suggest reconciliation is underway.

In December 2024, a Paris court sentenced Mathias Pogba to three years in prison, with two suspended, for his role in an attempted extortion scheme against his younger brother.

The case sent shockwaves through French football: Pogba testified that he was ambushed, held at gunpoint by masked men with assault rifles, and pressured to pay €13 million.

Mathias later inflamed tensions with videos accusing Pogba of hypocrisy, even alleging that he had turned to witchcraft against French teammate Kylian Mbappé.

At the time, the relationship between the Pogba brothers seemed broken beyond repair. However, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Pogba appeared to draw a line under the feud.

In an Instagram story, he posted a video call with his brothers, followed by a picture of all three together with the caption: “Longue vie à mes frères”, “Long life to my brothers.”

Pogba did not address the past directly, nor did he revisit the court case or the spiritual accusations. Instead, he framed the moment around family unity, signalling that maybe he has now forgiven his brothers.

The Rise of Two-Piece Outfits for Men

0

In the ever-evolving world of men’s fashion, two-piece outfits have carved a lasting place. Once limited to suits or athletic wear, the modern two-piece set has expanded into a versatile and stylish option for virtually any setting. Whether you’re headed to a brunch, a business meeting, or a weekend getaway, these coordinated ensembles make dressing well feel refreshingly simple.

At their core, two-piece outfits consist of a matching top and bottom — most commonly shirts and trousers or jackets and pants. What makes them so appealing is their ability to deliver a complete, polished look with minimal effort. As fashion designer Tom Ford once said, “Dressing well is a form of good manners.” Two-piece sets make that act of courtesy easier and more accessible than ever before.

Function Meets Fashion

One of the main reasons for the growing popularity of these sets is the ease of coordination. With color, fabric, and cut already aligned, wearers avoid the typical guesswork of outfit planning. It’s a time-saver that doesn’t sacrifice style. From monochromatic designs to bolder, patterned looks, there’s something for every personal aesthetic.

For casual wear, co-ords made of linen, cotton, or jersey have gained traction, particularly during warmer seasons. Think breezy linen shirts paired with tailored shorts or matching jogger and hoodie combos in earthy tones — a favorite in streetwear circles. These outfits offer maximum comfort while maintaining a clean, curated appearance.

Tailored for Elegance

Of course, no discussion about two-piece sets would be complete without mentioning the classic suit. Tailored blazers and trousers have long been synonymous with sophistication. What sets modern suits apart is their adaptability: jackets can be worn over a turtleneck and jeans, while the trousers can be paired with a smart polo for a semi-formal vibe. This mix-and-match flexibility makes them a smart investment for any wardrobe.

Why Men Are Embracing the Two-Piece Trend

The rise in remote work, travel, and social media influence has led to a demand for clothing that balances comfort and style. Two-piece sets meet that demand perfectly. They’re also increasingly seen as a confidence booster. When clothes fit well and look cohesive, it’s easier to walk into any room with your head held high.

Mahama highlights investment opportunities in Ghana to Japanese investors

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Aug. 20, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday highlighted Ghana’s investment opportunities to Japanese investors.

Speaking at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, Japan, President Mahama mentioned energy, tourism, infrastructure development and ports and harbours as some of the key areas for investment for their mutual benefits.

He said Ghana was strategically located as the centre of the world and that it was one of the leading destinations in Africa for international direct investments.

He said Ghana was the host country for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which was the landmark protocol that was signed by African countries.

He noted that so far, almost 50 African countries had signed on to the AfCFTA protocol that allowed them to export duty-free, tariff-free into each other’s markets.

He said Ghana was a land of opportunity and that many nationals from all over the world were investing in Ghana.

The President said because of the discipline, quality standards, and industrial wisdom that Japanese businessmen had, the Government of Ghana was encouraging Japanese businessmen to look towards Ghana.

“Africa is the next frontier for investment. Most parts of the world are saturated when it comes to investment. Africa is opening up, is growing, and is a place that Japan should be looking at,” he said.

“And so let us marry Japanese precision with Ghanaian potential and create a win-win situation for ourselves.”

The President said aside from the numerous economic opportunities, Ghana was a stable, democratic, business-friendly gateway to West Africa and the African continent.

“We have a growing consumer market with improving macroeconomic fundamentals, clear reforms to lower the cost of doing business, and abundant opportunities for technology transfer,” he said.

The President said the government was re-establishing macro stability and the growth momentum of the economy.

“Inflation rose to a high of almost 23 per cent in 2024 and is currently down to 13.7 per cent. And we expect that by the end of the year to hit a single digit,” he said.

“And it’s also, our cedi has stabilized. For those of you who know the history of the Ghanaian cedi, it’s been one of the most volatile currencies in Africa.

“And a few years back, we were said to be the worst performing currency. I’m happy to announce that this year Ghana’s cedi has been the best performing currency in the world.”

Touching on infrastructural development, President Mahama said the Government’s $10 billion Big Push Policy was a programme aimed to improve the infrastructure of the country, especially in the road sector, in the industrial sector and agro-processing space.

The President said the Government was investing $2 billion a year towards Ghana’s infrastructure development.

Concerning the 24-Hour Economy Programme, President Mahama said under the Policy the Government would give incentives to businesses that were prepared to invest and to run more than the eight hour working cycle.

Set your own rules and principles for your marriage to work – Victoria Lebene

Victoria Lebene is a Ghanaian actress and journalist Victoria Lebene is a Ghanaian actress and journalist

Ghanaian actress and journalist Victoria Lebene has emphasised that for a marriage to work, couples must set their own rules and principles.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, Lebene disclosed that setting rules involves understanding each other’s needs and establishing mutual respect.

“Holy Spirit revealed to me that it all about understanding. Because if I don’t like something and I let you know about it and you still do the same things, I don’t think it’s fair to your partner.

“If there’s understanding, everything will be perfect. When there’s an issue and it’s discussed among yourselves, it’s understanding that will make it beautiful. Love and life are all about understanding” she said.

My father used to beat me to the point that I was left with wounds – Victoria Lebene

When asked if there are guidelines for perfect relationship or marriage and if there are some guidelines in her own marriage, she replied saying that marriage is like an institution.

According to her, couples will be cautious on what to do if there are principles.

“There are no guidelines but you must have your own rules and principles. When you go to a company or a country, they have their own policies and principles so when you go into a marriage, it’s an institution on its own so you should be able to set rules. If there are guidelines in marriage, you will be cautious on the things to do and not to do” she stated.

When asked what could make her consider divorcing her husband, Victoria Lebene said she cherishes her marriage deeply and would only do so if God directs her to do so.

“Unless God reveal to me, because he gave me what I have and I cherish it a lot. God give us things in different ways for us to protect them. If you’re given something and you’re not able to protect it or keep it safe, you will lose it and you will regret it” she shared.

She added, “I meet a lot of beautiful grown women who tell me they actually regret leaving their marriage because they realised we are all not perfect.”

‘Teams should be deducted points or fined’ – Rooney on Semenyo’s racial abuse

Wayne Rooney (L) has vehemently condemned racial abuse against Semenyo (R) Wayne Rooney (L) has vehemently condemned racial abuse against Semenyo (R)

Legendary English footballer, Wayne Rooney has called for severe punishments for teams whose supporters are found culpable of racial abuse amid Antoine Semenyo’s issue.

According to him, one way to curb the menace in football is by deducting points from teams whose supporters engage in racism during games.

The former Manchester United striker also suggested that imposing huge fines on teams is another effective measure to curtail the issue damaging the sport’s reputation.

Identity of Liverpool fan who racially abused Semenyo revealed

“There needs to be a strong campaign for society – for children, parents, and grandparents – to be educated. You have to hit the clubs because that’s the only way it will stop. If there’s ignorance, the fans will still do it.

“You have to hit the clubs by taking off points or hit them in the pocket and take money away from them. Otherwise, it will keep on going. Hopefully, the right people will sit down with the right organizations to try and get something serious in place,” the ex-player said while speaking about Semenyo’s racial abuse on the BBC podcast, ‘The Wayne Rooney Show.’

Semenyo vs Kudus: Ghanaians predict top scorer for 2025/26 season

The BBC sport pundit recounted an encounter with a player who received racial abuse, saying, “I had it in DC with one of my players who got racially abused, and he was crying on my chest. I was holding him as he was crying. I don’t think people realize – they say it as a throwaway line that they think has no meaning behind it, but it hurts people. For people to see that and understand, there needs to be more done to stop it.”

About Semenyo’s racial abuse

Semenyo was racially abused by a fan during the Premier League opener at Anfield on Friday, August 15, 2025.

The incident occurred in the 29th minute of the Liverpool–Bournemouth clash when Semenyo alerted the referee to the abuse. Play was halted for four minutes as officials dealt with the situation, and the fan was identified and escorted out of the stadium.

Merseyside Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested the following day on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense.

The suspect, reportedly known as Mark Mogan was later bailed and banned from all UK stadiums.

GNPC, Petroleum Commission Deepen Collaboration

0

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and the Petroleum Commission (PC) have signed a Promotion, Marketing, and Revenue Sharing Agreement covering all data acquired under GNPC’s Reconnaissance License on the Voltaian Basin Project.

The agreement, formalised at a brief ceremony at GNPC’s Training Centre in Accra, provides a framework for the joint promotion and marketing of 2D seismic and geochemical data collected by GNPC.

It also sets out modalities for revenue sharing from future data licensing activities.

According to both institutions, the signing of the agreement demonstrates their commitment to accelerating upstream investment in Ghana’s onshore sedimentary basin while ensuring value creation and equitable benefit sharing from national data resources.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, Kwame Ntow Amoah, who signed on behalf of the Corporation, described the agreement as a significant step forward in maximizing the value of the country’s data assets while strengthening transparency and collaboration between the National Oil Company and the regulator.

“This project is a lifeline. With the right investment and commitment, we can replicate the success of Ghana’s offshore sector right here onshore — and lead this development on our own terms,” Mr. Amoah stated.

He urged stakeholders to remain focused and committed to unlocking the full potential of the Voltaian Basin Project.

Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Emeafa Hardcastle, welcomed the agreement as both timely and forward-looking, describing it as a demonstration of the two institutions’ shared commitment to advancing Ghana’s upstream agenda.

“This agreement couldn’t have come at a better time. We will continue to collaborate and strategize to ensure smooth and seamless progress for our industry,” she said.

She expressed appreciation to GNPC for its sustained partnership. She also assured GNPC of the Commission’s full support in marketing Ghana’s resources to deliver maximum shared benefits.

The Voltaian Basin Project remains GNPC’s flagship onshore initiative, aimed at unlocking the country’s untapped hydrocarbon potential in its inland sedimentary basin.

Ghana Lawmaker Proposes Higher Waste Levy to Tackle Sanitation Crisis

Unilever Plastic Waste Employee Drive
Waste

A member of parliament is pushing for a major increase in Ghana’s sanitation levy to address a growing waste management crisis.

John Oti Bless, who chairs parliament’s Sanitation and Water Resources Committee, wants to raise the charge from 10 to 50 pesewas.

The proposal comes as districts struggle to manage waste following the cancellation of a key government contract with private waste company Zoomlion. Bless argues that without a dedicated funding stream, local assemblies cannot effectively tackle the country’s sanitation challenges.

“Unless we have a clear source of funding,” Bless told journalists, noting that his own district receives only 200,000 cedis annually for sanitation—an amount he called completely inadequate. His constituency faces significant waste management issues that cannot be addressed with current funding levels.

The increased levy would be specifically designated for sanitation projects and job creation through the National Youth Employment Agency. This ring-fenced approach aims to provide sustainable funding while creating employment opportunities in the waste management sector.

The proposal now awaits government consideration as Ghana continues to grapple with efficient waste disposal and urban sanitation management.

Microeconomic indicators support 5% policy rate cut before year-end – GNCCI

0

Mark Badu-Aboagye, CEO of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mark Badu-Aboagye, CEO of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The Chief Executive Officer-Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), Mark Badu-Aboagye, has urged the Bank of Ghana to aggressively lower its policy rate to end the year at 20 percent, citing anchored inflation expectations and relative macroeconomic stability the country is enjoying.

He argued that the current 25 percent rate stifles business growth and exacerbates inflationary pressures despite recent declines.

Speaking at the launch of GhanaFest Europe ’25 in Accra, Badu-Aboagye argued that the impact of rate cuts is delayed but essential for long-term stability.

“On average it takes two years for it to affect other macroeconomic variables, especially inflation,” he said, confronting fears that a radical approach to the policy rate could derail gains chalked up so far.

“The inflation reduction we are enjoying now is the result of policy rate hikes we did years back,” he added.

He maintained that cutting the policy rate by 500 basis points to 20 percent would take “about three quarters” to impact inflation but would immediately “strengthen our economy, build a very strong productive capacity to be enabled in reducing inflation”.

“I am not in support that they should keep the policy rate very high,” he emphasised. “We have the room to ease monetary policy in support of fiscal policies on the day-to-day economy.”

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) Monetary Policy Committee made an unprecedented cut in the policy rate by 300 basis points, reducing it from 28 percent to 25 percent, at its July session. Though laudable, as it is the biggest cut since September 2024 when it slashed the rate by 200 basis points, the business community still struggles with inhibitive cost of credit.

Therefore, they anticipate further cuts to improve access to finance as inflation continues on a nose-dive. Inflation has been easing since beginning of the year, having plummeted from 23.5 percent recorded in January to 12.1 percent for July 2025.

However, lending rates remained elevated – with the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR) hovering around 23.80 percent for most loan categories. According to the latest Annualised Percentage Rate (APR) data from the Bank of Ghana, there are sharp disparities across borrower categories and loan maturities. Even households enjoy access to more competitive rates than small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Some banks offer APRs around 20 percent for certain tenors while others charge above 40 percent. SMEs face a high floor for borrowing – with even the most competitive one-year SME loans priced above 17 percent and medium-term rates often exceeding 30 percent.

Mr. Badu-Aboagye emphasised that cheaper borrowing costs is critical for Ghanaian businesses as they struggle to navigate US tariff hikes and seek new markets in Europe and other African countries.

“Looking at the dynamics, a 3 percent reduction is very huge – but a 25 percent policy rate is still high,” he lamented. He countered the central bank’s conservative posture, arguing that the current economic fundamentals, as compelling as they are, support further easing of the BoG rate.

He maintains that the sustained decline in inflation, strong reserves and fortified cedi create headroom. “This is a great opportunity for the central bank to also ease monetary policy,” he asserted.

He stressed that the prevailing high borrowing costs prevent businesses from expanding operations and investing in new markets crucial for export diversification away from US tariffs, which according to him has a bearing on job creation.

Further challenging the view that lowering rates would fuel inflation, he argued that much of Ghana’s inflation is “cost-push”. High interest rates directly increase production costs. “If you are reducing the interest rate, it means you are reducing the cost of production as well. And then inflation will come down.”

Badu-Aboagye is also pushing for Ghanaian businesses to pivot their exports toward Europe and take advantage of the GhanaFest Europe ’25 in the wake of punitive US tariffs.

According to him, this shift – moving beyond traditional exports like cocoa, gold and oil – would create opportunities to innovate, diversify, grow and create jobs. However, this requires SME investment – which could be facilitated with lower lending rates.

He expressed the Chamber’s commitment in supporting Ghanaian SMEs to access markets and grow. “A lot of export promotion, a lot of market access… that is the platform we are creating. I would just encourage the business community to collaborate with GNCCI to access European markets.”

Echoing sentiments of needing a pivot to Europe, the General Manager-Ghana Netherlands Business & Culture Council (GNBCC), Ms. Hilde Famaey, threw a challenge to Ghanaian businesses and government officials.

“Use GhanaFest Europe ’25 not just to showcase products, but also present investment-ready projects. Come prepared, the GNBCC is here to be your bridge to Dutch capital, technology and expertise”. She positioned the October event as a “curated opportunity gateway” to Ghanaian potential for Dutch businesses.

The Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere Darko, stressed that GhanaFest Europe ’25 is a “platform to promote bilateral trade and investment”, leveraging Ghana’s proximity to Europe and the EU’s Economic Partnership Agreement for sectors like agriculture, pharmaceuticals, ICT and logistics.

Fire Guts Boys Quarters At Asuoyeboa

The razed house

A fierce fire outbreak on Monday evening, August 18, 2025, gutted a three-bedroom boys quarters at Asuoyeboa in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region, leaving in its wake destruction worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

According to eyewitnesses, the inferno began around 7:00 pm and quickly engulfed the structure, reducing valuable household items, furniture, and personal belongings to ashes. Although no lives were lost, residents described the incident as “frightening” and a “near disaster”, considering how closely packed houses are in the area.

The timely intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was crucial in preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings. Firefighters battled the raging flames for over an hour before bringing the situation under control, drawing praise from community members who feared the entire neighbourhood could have been consumed.

“The fire was very intense, and if not for the quick arrival of the Fire Service, we could have been talking about something much worse today,” said a visibly shaken resident, who lost some personal effects stored in the affected building.

Officials of the GNFS have since launched investigations into the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest possible electrical faults, but the Service says it will only confirm the cause after thorough assessment.

Meanwhile, affected families are counting their losses and appealing for support. Many of them were left with nothing but the clothes they wore when they rushed out of the burning house. Community leaders have also urged residents to remain cautious and ensure regular maintenance of their electrical connections to prevent similar tragedies.

Municipal authorities have assured that relief measures are being considered for the displaced victims, while also commending the professionalism of the GNFS in averting what could have been a large-scale catastrophe.

The incident has reignited calls for residents in the Ashanti Region to invest in basic fire safety equipment such as extinguishers and smoke detectors, as the frequency of domestic fire outbreaks continues to rise in recent years.

Ghana’s Mahama Pitches ‘Gateway to Africa’ Vision to Japanese Investors

Japan Investors
Japan Investors

President John Mahama made a direct appeal to Japanese business leaders this week, positioning Ghana as the prime gateway for investment into West Africa.

Speaking at an investment forum in Yokohama, he pointed to the country’s dramatic economic turnaround as a reason for newfound confidence.

Mahama detailed the progress, noting a significant drop in inflation from a high of nearly 23% to 13.7% this year. He projected it would fall to single digits by year’s end. His biggest applause line celebrated the national currency’s remarkable reversal. “A few years back, we were said to be the worst-performing currency in Africa. I’m happy to announce that this year, the Ghana cedi has been the best-performing currency in the world,” he stated.

The government is backing its words with action. Mahama announced revisions to the Investment Promotion Centre Act, a move designed to tear down barriers for foreign capital. The changes will eliminate minimum capital requirements, inviting investors to set up shop with as little as $50,000. It’s a clear signal that Ghana is serious about attracting a broader range of businesses.

But the real selling point is market access. With the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area headquartered in Accra, Mahama argued that investing in Ghana is a direct ticket to a market of 1.4 billion people. He highlighted specific opportunities in agribusiness, energy, and automotive assembly, pointing to existing Japanese investments from companies like Toyota and Honda as proof of concept.

The pitch was clear. While much of the world is saturated with investment opportunities, Africa represents the next frontier. And Ghana, with its political stability and reforming economy, wants to be Japan’s first stop.

GHALCA Chairman confirms University of Ghana Stadium’s readiness for Top 4 Tournament

0

John Ansah

Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), John Ansah, has assured that the University of Ghana Sports Stadium is in excellent condition to host this year’s GHALCA Top 4 tournament.

The competition was initially scheduled for the Baba Yara Stadium, but ongoing renovation works ruled out the Kumasi venue. The Accra Sports Stadium was later selected as an alternative.

However, on Monday, August 19, organisers were compelled to make another change after the National Sports Authority (NSA) reserved the Accra facility for the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.

Speaking to Woezor TV, Mr. Ansah expressed confidence in the readiness of the University of Ghana facility.

“I don’t think there is a challenge using the University of Ghana Sports Stadium,” he said.

“They started working on it a long time ago, but it is just that we chose the Accra Sports Stadium because we had approval, so we did not go back to the University of Ghana. When we had the challenge with the Accra Sports Stadium, then we had to run around to the University of Ghana Stadium, and it is in good shape, and we are ready to play now,” he added.

The 2025 Top 4 tournament kicks off today, Wednesday, August 20, with Asante Kotoko taking on Bibiani GoldStars in the opening fixture.

Later in the evening, Hearts of Oak will square off against Heart of Lions.

Kick-off times are scheduled for 15:00 GMT and 18:00 GMT, respectively.

He further recalled that he had previously prophesied a helicopter crash, which later occurred and became a central talking point.

The prophet also insisted that an unfortunate incident that happened during the era of the late President John Atta Mills would happen again.

Prophet Roja also claimed he saw Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin handing over his position to another person for an extended period.

Speaking in an interview on Angel TV, which was shared on social media, he said, “There is bad news coming. It is big and black. I don’t want to mention names, but I see a man called Julius Debrah replacing someone else.

“The last time I said something like this, it happened during former President John Atta Mills’ time, and the same thing will happen again.

“The Speaker of Parliament, too, I see someone taking his seat for a long time.”

Socialite, Afia Schwarzenegger has thrown shade at the organisers of the 2025 Ghana Awards, USA following the crowning of gospel singer, Empress Gifty, as Artiste of the Year.

The awards, held on August 16, 2025 saw Empress Gifty beat top stars including Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, King Promise, Diana Hamilton, Joe Mettle, KiDi, Fameye, and King Paluta to take the night’s biggest prize.

But Afia Schwarzenegger was far from impressed. In a fiery Instagram post on August 19, 2025 she accused the organisers of selling the award.

“What is there to talk about on UTV? Is it the award that they bought or what?” she wrote.

“I am also in America, so you people should give me six months and I will organise a music awards where I will give the Artiste of the Year to Patapaa,” she added.

So far, neither Empress Gifty nor the organisers have responded.

The right outfit enhances your body type, reflects your personal style, and ensures you feel comfortable and poised. Aligning wardrobe choices with both personality and body shape is key to achieving a look that is flattering, stylish, and elegant.

For mothers who favor timeless sophistication, classic pieces are a reliable choice. Tailored dresses, blouses, and skirts in neutral shades like black, white, or navy create a polished appearance that transcends trends.

Fabrics that drape well and cuts that flatter the figure ensure that outfits exude grace without sacrificing comfort, making them suitable for both casual and formal occasions.

For those who love to make a statement, bold fashion choices allow personality to shine. Vibrant colors, striking prints, and distinctive accessories capture attention and convey confidence.

Thoughtful experimentation with patterns and textures highlights favorite features and expresses a lively, joyful energy, turning everyday attire into a reflection of creativity and style.

Choosing outfits that suit your body type is equally important. Understanding your proportions helps you select designs that enhance natural shape and create balance.

For example, mothers with an apple-shaped body may prefer dresses or tops with an A-line silhouette to draw attention away from the midsection, while skirts or pants that elongate the legs create harmony.

Mothers with a pear-shaped figure can emphasize the upper body with structured blazers or fitted tops, achieving a balanced and elegant appearance. By combining flattering cuts with colors and patterns that align with your personality, every outfit becomes both stylish and comfortable.

Confidence is the most essential accessory a mother can wear. Feeling comfortable in clothing enhances posture, poise, and presence, making even simple outfits appear elegant and intentional. Fashion is a means of self-expression, and when a mother embraces her unique style while dressing in harmony with her body, confidence naturally shines through.

Ultimately, selecting outfits that suit both personality and body type is about celebrating individuality, showcasing creativity, and embracing the beauty of motherhood without compromising style.

Thoughtful choices that flatter the figure, complement character, and offer comfort allow mothers to navigate daily life and special occasions with elegance and ease.
