President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Coordinating Directors (MMDCDs), cautioning them against undertaking any capital expenditure-related activities.
This directive comes in the wake of the revocation of appointments for all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and Assembly members, effective January 8, 2025.
In a statement, issued on Wednesday, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Amin Abdul-Rahman, said, “All MMDCDs are directed to take administrative responsibility of their respective MMDAs with immediate effect.
“All MMDCDs are however to take note, that they are not to undertake any capital expenditure-related activity during this period. On behalf of H.E. the President, we wish to thank all outgoing Hon. MMDCEs and Hon. Appointed Assembly Members for their service to the Republic of Ghana.”
The statement directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Coordinating Directors (MMDCDs) to take administrative responsibility for their respective MMDAs with immediate effect.
“All Hon. MMDCEs are directed to hand over their duties, Government properties in their possession and all relevant documents to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Coordinating Directors (MMDCDs) who would hold the fort for the daily administration of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) until substantive Hon. MMDCEs are appointed by H.E. the President. Also, all appointed Hon. Assembly Members who have in their possession any public assets should immediately hand them over to their respective MMDCDs.”

Elvis Presley‘s Graceland home is one of the most iconic of any entertainer. Millions of visitors enter its musical gates every year to celebrate the life and career of the King of Rock and Roll. However, there’s another stately home, Neverland, that housed another legendary entertainer, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. What are the same elements between these homes? What are the key differences? Most of all, who lived in both places?
Elvis Presley’s Graceland: The facts
Elvis Presley purchased Graceland on March 19, 1957 for $102,500. The mansion is located in Memphis, Tennessee.
Graceland is a 17,552-square-foot home with 23 rooms, in total, spread out over 13.8 acres. Elvis spent over 20 years of his life enjoying the stately home, named in honor of Grace Toof, a relative of the original owners.
After Elvis’ death, Graceland remained a private residence until 1982, when it was opened to the public as a museum. It remains the second most visited home in the world, second to The White House.
Graceland was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1991. In 2006, Graceland’s significance was further acknowledged when it was designated as a National Historic Landmark, a more exclusive recognition given to properties of exceptional historical importance in American culture.
Elvis died in the mansion on Aug. 16, 1977. His funeral took place in the home and he is buried in its Meditation Garden.
Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch served at his home and personal amusement park
Neverland Ranch was purchased by Michael Jackson in 1988. It is located in Los Olivos, California, about 125 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The property is approximately 2,700 acres and cost the entertainer $19.5M. It is comprised of 18 rooms in total for the 13,500 sq. ft. home.
The home is named Neverland after the fantasy island in JM Barrie’s story of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. The property surrounding the home includes an amusement park, a petting zoo, and multiple trains and railroads that run through the property.
The ranch was a retreat where Jackson entertained children, friends, and family, often hosting charity events for underprivileged kids. However, it was also the place where Jackson allegedly molested several young boys.
Due to mounting debts, Jackson relinquished control of the property in 2008. However, Neverland remained owned by Jackson’s estate and Colony Capital. Forbes reported that in Dec. 2020, billionaire Ron Burkle, a friend of the late pop star, purchased the property for $22M. It has since been renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch.
Jackson died tragically in 2009 from a combination of anesthetic propofol and lorazepam. He died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, lived at both Graceland and Neverland. She considered Graceland her primary residence from 1969 through 1977 when Elvis died. Lisa Marie visited Graceland after Elvis‘ death to visit family but eventually made California her home.
Lisa Marie continued to visit Graceland with her children Riley, Benjamin, Harper, and Finley throughout her life. She spent holidays at the home, visiting when it was not open for tours.
However, upon her marriage to Michael Jackson in May 1994, Lisa Marie also had the opportunity to reside in Neverland with Riley and Ben. It was not the couple’s primary residence, but they did spend time at the home.
Their marriage ended two years later, in 1996. Lisa Marie opened up on her blog, reprinted by Oprah.com, about her and Michael’s union.
Lisa wrote, “The hardest decision I have ever had to make, which was to walk away and let his fate have him, even though I desperately loved him and tried to stop or reverse it somehow. He was an amazing person and I am lucky to have gotten as close to him as I did and to have had the many experiences and years that we had together.”
Lisa Marie first met Michael in 1974 when she was six years old and attended his concert at the Sahara Tahoe. That was the first time her father, Elvis Presley, met him as well.

The Returning Officer for the Ablekuma North Constituency, Vincent Obeng, has announced his decision to discontinue the collation of results in the area.
He informed the Electoral Commission (EC) to find a replacement, citing frustrations encountered during the collation process on January 8, 2025.
Obeng revealed that, out of seven polling stations, results from four had already been collated, leaving just three remaining.
Speaking to Channel One News’ Hanson Agyemang, Obeng explained, “I hope you have all seen what is going on. Yesterday January 7, we were left with 7 polling stations to go. We came today [January 8], and we have been able to do four out of the seven.
“So we’re left with three more. We brought our presiding officers here, two came and they couldn’t authenticate the statement of the poll and the declaration form. One said she couldn’t come, so that is the three now.
“It’s so unfortunate for me to make this statement that I’m done with Ablekuma North. They should find a new Returning Officer to continue their work for them.”
In his response, the Director of Training, EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe expressed regret over the comment by the Returning Officer.
Chaos erupted at the Greater Accra Regional Office during the resumption of the collation of results for Ablekuma North by the Electoral Commission (EC), sparking heightened tensions.
The incident stemmed from accusations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the EC was collaborating with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to manipulate election results in the constituency.
The NDC’s Constituency Organiser, Musa Kalamu, alleged that the EC was aiding the NPP in doctoring figures from pink sheets of outstanding polling stations.
The situation occurred after the EC resumed the collation of the results after it temporarily suspended the collation process for the Ablekuma North constituency due to unresolved issues with results from seven outstanding polling stations, on January 6.
This decision comes as the EC sought to verify and authenticate the results from these polling stations before proceeding with the final collation.
Out of the 20 outstanding polling stations before the collation exercise on Monday, January 6, presiding officers have successfully authenticated 13 of the pink sheets submitted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to abolishing the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) and the COVID-19 levy.
This pledge, a key feature of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, aims to provide relief to Ghanaians burdened by these levies.
Speaking on the matter, Madam Bawah Mogtari assured the public that the government remains resolute in its determination to deliver on this promise, emphasizing its dedication to easing the financial pressures on citizens.
“The E-levy has been a significant concern for many citizens. In a country where several banks have collapsed, some intentionally, mobile money services have become the main avenue for financial transactions. It is critical to ensure that this platform remains accessible and affordable for all. These levies will be scrapped,” Joyce Bawah made these remarks during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show.
She expressed disapproval of the 1.5% rate of the levy, comparing it to other nations where taxes are limited to 0.5%.
In her view, the increased rate has rendered the levy burdensome for the average Ghanaian, emphasizing its wider consequences, particularly its effects on international development.
“For those who have no other options but to transact business using mobile money, this levy is not just inconvenient but stifling.
“Many development partners used to distribute resources through mobile money platforms. However, the introduction of the E-levy has disrupted these processes, adding unnecessary strain to an already fragile system.”
Additionally, Joyce Bawah questioned the continued collection of COVID-19 by the Akufo-Addo administration years after the pandemic had subsided.
“If we still have these levies in place and yet have not completed crucial projects like Agenda 111, we need to ask ourselves whether these levies serve their intended purpose..”

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed shock over the severity of the looming power crisis as he assumes office.
This follows concerns raised by John Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, regarding a severe fuel shortage threatening to plunge the country into an energy crisis, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”
Speaking after President Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2024, Jinapor revealed that Ghana’s fuel reserves are critically low, with only five hours of supply remaining.
Jinapor also criticised the outgoing administration for failing to secure adequate fuel supplies, leaving the incoming government in a precarious position.
During a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank, President Mahama emphasized the urgency of resolving the escalating crisis, stating that immediate steps are required to avert widespread power outages.
“The transition has taken place, it’s been smooth and cordial. But there are few surprises that have come up in respect of the energy sector, and some aspects of government decisions over the seven years. But Ghana has the human resources to deal with the situation and turn things around as quickly as possible,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) urged President Mahama to act swiftly to avert the possibility of a dumsor.
On a lively episode of U Cook on UTV hosted by gospel singer Empress Gifty, outspoken entertainment pundit and artiste manager Bulldog, born Lawrence Asiamah Hanson, did not mince words about his political allegiance.
In the interview monitored by MyNewsGH, Bulldog openly declared his unwavering support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while offering a scathing critique of the previous administration under Nana Akufo-Addo, describing it as “one of the most ineffective in history.”
When Empress Gifty probed into his consistent criticism of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the show, Bulldog explained his position with characteristic candour.
“It’s not about being bitter or having a personal vendetta,” he began.
“I support the NDC because, under Mahama’s leadership, we saw tangible results—solid infrastructure, good policies, and genuine progress.”
In defending his stance, Bulldog brought up the contentious debate around the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which the NPP often touts as a cornerstone of its legacy.
“Let’s set the record straight,” he asserted. “The Free SHS initiative didn’t originate with the NPP. Mahama laid the groundwork before leaving office. They only implemented it, but the credit goes to the NDC.”
Bulldog’s pointed remarks didn’t stop there. Responding to Empress Gifty’s question about whether he was financially motivated to align with the NDC, he dismissed the idea with a laugh.
“I don’t need anyone to pay me to speak the truth,” he said. “I support the NDC because they deliver results, not because of money.”

The NPP MPs protested against Bagbin’s description of their caucus as ‘micro’
The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised objection with the description of his caucus as “micro” by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, during proceedings on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
While reacting to an MP’s objection to the Majority Leader’s use of the title “Osahen” on parliamentary records, the Speaker, in a jest, stated that it remains part of his duty to protect “the leader of the micro minority.”
The comment by the Speaker attracted a sharp objection by the NPP Caucus which had its members rising to their feet in protest.
Rising to his feet, the Majority Leader emphasised the caucus’s objection to the description.
The Speaker, in response, agreed to the Minority’s objection, noting it as justified and stated that he will forthwith not use the term on the caucus again.
The NDC gained an overwhelming majority of seats in the 2024 parliamentary election, securing 183 seats as against the 88 currently held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Independent members hold four other seats, while a single seat, the Ablekuma North seat, remains outstanding due to an ongoing dispute between the two leading political parties.

Dean for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Richmond Agyabeng Amponsah, has welcomed President John Mahama’s decision to revoke their appointments.
In an interview on Adom FM’s , Mr. Amponsah acknowledged that the announcement was sudden.
However, he stated that they anticipated this outcome once there was a change of government following the December 7 election.
“We were expecting this, but it is not surprising. Whether it came late or not, nothing would have changed. Bawumia conceded defeat, and we all prepared ourselves, but we didn’t expect it to come today,” he stated.

The results of the last election were a clear call for change. Ghanaians voted overwhelmingly for it, delivering a decisive victory to President John Dramani Mahama with an extraordinary margin of two million votes.

In response to the ex-president’s State of the Nation Address, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah of Ellembele aptly captured the frustrations of the electorate: economic hardship, unsustainable debt, and a collapsing currency.
These are the burdens the average Ghanaian seeks to overcome. The grim reality is this: in January 2022, the cedi traded at 5 GH₵ to 1 USD, yet by December 2024, it had plummeted to 15.5 GH₵ per dollar—an astronomical depreciation of over 300%. While working to alleviate the suffering of ordinary Ghanaians, the president must not ignore the grave misdeeds of his predecessor’s administration. Accountability is essential.
Those who have looted and squandered the country’s limited resources must be held to account through due process. The president must invoke the law on willfully causing financial loss to the state, which provides a critical tool for addressing these offenses.
In the landmark Quality Grain case(The Republic vrs Ibrahim Adams, et al), Justice Kwame Afreh of blessed memory, emphasized that foreseeability is key to the intention and the action of the state actor to fall foul of the law.
The law applies not only when a state actor directly benefits from their actions but also when it is foreseeable that their decisions could harm the state. Any state actor who fails this test has a case to answer.
A relentless pursuit of looters, reckless state actor may stem the tide of impunity that has put the state at the mercy of ‘fortune hunters”.
In conclusion, I humbly urge President Mahama to act decisively and courageously.
He must seize this moment to correct the injustices Ghanaians have endured over the past eight years and rebuild trust in governance. May he lead with wisdom and boldness, and may God bless our homeland, Ghana.

Chaos erupted during the re-collation of election results in the Ablekuma North constituency on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, over the authenticity of pink sheets.
The exercise, meant to clarify results from some outstanding stations in the constituency triggered heated exchanges among polling agents and agents of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who accused the EC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of conspiring to rig the elections in favour of the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the Director of Elections for the NPP, Evans Nimako, emphasised the importance of adhering to legal procedures in resolving electoral disputes.
He reiterated that political parties had been directed to submit their copies of the Form 8A results, either in hard or soft copy, for verification by the EC.
According to him, this process is essential to maintain the integrity of the electoral outcomes.
“The public must allow the law to operate, we have 276 constituencies, of which 275 results have been declared. However, in Ablekuma North, seven polling stations are still pending due to unresolved issues,” he noted.
The EC temporarily suspended the collation process on Monday, January 6, due to unresolved issues concerning results from seven polling stations.
Out of 20 initially outstanding polling stations, presiding officers were able to authenticate 13 pink sheets submitted by the NPP.
This re-collation follows a High Court ruling that directed the EC to address the disputes and re-collate results in four constituencies, including Ablekuma North.
However, the process has only deepened tensions, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

Former Black Star player Asamoah Gyan and Prophet Kumchacha
Popular Ghanaian pastor, Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha, has cautioned former Black Stars player Asamoah Gyan over his comments alleging that the recent fire outbreak at Kantamanto was caused by one of the two major political parties in the country.
In a video shared on social media, Kumchacha noted that the comment from Asamoah Gyan is unwarranted and, therefore, he should render an apology to the victims who were affected by the incident.
“Asamoah, shut up! Stop what you are doing. How can you come on social media in a singlet and make such utterances? How can you make politics out of this issue? There is no sense in what you said online,” he said.

Ghanaian broadcaster, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has announced his resignation as the Morning Show Host of Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN), effective January 8, 2024.
In a post on Facebook, Afrifa-Mensah cited differences in interests between the management of the company and himself as the reason for his decision.
“I am resigning as the morning show host of Angel Broadcasting Network, effective immediately.
“This decision was made due to differences in interests between the management of the company and myself,” he shared.
Afrifa-Mensah expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve ABN and the Ghanaian public.
He also assured his fans and family that he would share his next move soon.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve ABN and the Ghanaian public. To my fans and family out there, I will share my next move soon,” he added.
This comes after rumors in December claimed that Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah had been dismissed from Angel TV, though neither Afrifa-Mensah nor Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN) officially confirmed it.
Afrifa-Mensah, known for his direct approach on the morning show “Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ,” has often sparked controversies.
His comments about some high-profile individuals, including Prophet Opambour and Nuumo Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, the Overlord of the Gadangme State, led to outrage and demands for an apology, which he refused, escalating tensions.

Speaking to his congregation, Pastor Obinna Michael said President Mahama would face some initial challenges in his bid to stabilise the economy but would receive divine help to overcome them.
The man of God also said the Ghanaian leader would face strong opposition from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in his attempt to transform the country.
“Ghana has done well. Ghana and Rwanda are going to become two nations that the African continent will learn from come 2025,” he prophesied. “The man that they [Ghana] have elected as the president is going to struggle to bring stability but he would be helped,” the pastor stated.
“His greatest fight and opposition is not the demon, but the party that he defeated. They are going to be his greatest undoing but in his heart and what God has shown me, the man is ready to bring stability to the nation of Ghana, and Ghana will come to the place where it’s supposed to be.”
Despite the strong opposition from the NPP, the revered man of God said President Mahama’s tenure in office would see great success and many from Ghana and beyond would marvel at the progress of the country.

Tensions flared during the collation of parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North constituency as agents from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed over the authenticity of pink sheets.
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday January 6 temporarily suspended the collation process for the Ablekuma North constituency due to unresolved issues with results from seven outstanding polling stations.
Out of the 20 outstanding polling stations before the collation exercise on Monday, January 6, presiding officers successfully authenticated 13 of the pink sheets submitted by the NPP.
The returning officer, Vincent Obeng, explained that the commission has been unable to reach the presiding officers for the remaining seven polling stations, prompting the decision to suspend the exercise for the day.
But the brawl erupted when the NDC agents accused the EC and NPP of conspiring to rig the election in favour of the NPP candidate, Efua Afriyie.
Kwadwo Twum Boafo, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority has questioned the sincerity of immediate-past president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to extend an olive branch to the newly-installed John Dramani Mahama government.
Contributing to a panel discussion on Metro TV ahead of the swearing-in and inauguration of the Mahama government, Twum Boafo outrightly rejected the gesture by Nana Akufo-Addo, asserting that the move is devoid of honesty and ingenuity.
In rubbishing the decision by former President Akufo-Addo, Twum Boafo who is a victim of state-sponsored harassment and persecution, pointed out the ill-treatment of John Dramani Mahama and appointees of his erstwhile government as justification for his stance.
The respected NDC member stated that John Mahama himself was not left out of the mistreatment as elements of the NPP forced him out of the building that served as his residence while he was serving as president.
Twum Boafo argues that but for the humiliating defeat the NPP suffered in the 2024 elections, Nana Akufo-Addo would have made no such offer.
“Suddenly President Akufo-Addo says let’s forgive each other. When did he discover brotherhood? When he flat-out terrorized some of us, appointees of President Mahama including President Mahama himself. They threw out his (John Mahama) things. People were sent to turf out a former president out of his residents.
“Today he has discovered that we are brothers. After terrorizing us, he has now discovered brotherhood. It was the verdict of Ghanaians that made him discover brotherhood,” he said on Metro TV.

The First Vice-Chairman of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Clement Boateng, has donated GH₵40,000 to support the reconstruction of the Kantamanto market, which was devastated by a fire on January 2, 2025, around 1 a.m.
During the donation, Mr Boateng emphasized the need for financial institutions to reschedule loan payments for traders affected by the fire.
He appealed to banks and other financial bodies to reconsider repayment timelines to ease the burden on affected traders.
He also urged Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies to allocate a portion of the funds collected from traders toward insurance schemes. According to him, this would provide a safety net against similar unforeseen events in the future.
“I will take this opportunity to appeal to the banks because I know that there are a lot of people here who have taken some facilities from the bank. So, I want to make an appeal to all the financial institutions that our members have taken facility from, to please reschedule their facility arrangement, so that the time that they are supposed to repay the facility will be extended for them to have some bit of respite.
“For some time now, we have not had a well-structured market in the country. Almost all the markets we have are made by the indigenes. This is the time for the government to collaborate with the private sector so that we can build more well-structured markets for Ghanaians to trade,” The Director of Communications of GUTA, Joseph Paddy added.

Chaos erupted during the re-collation of election results in the Ablekuma North constituency on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, over the authenticity of pink sheets.
The exercise, meant to clarify results from some outstanding stations in the constituency triggered heated exchanges among polling agents and agents of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who accused the EC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of conspiring to rig the elections in favour of the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the Director of Elections for the NPP, Evans Nimako, emphasised the importance of adhering to legal procedures in resolving electoral disputes.
He reiterated that political parties had been directed to submit their copies of the Form 8A results, either in hard or soft copy, for verification by the EC.
According to him, this process is essential to maintain the integrity of the electoral outcomes.
“The public must allow the law to operate, we have 276 constituencies, of which 275 results have been declared. However, in Ablekuma North, seven polling stations are still pending due to unresolved issues,” he noted.
The EC temporarily suspended the collation process on Monday, January 6, due to unresolved issues concerning results from seven polling stations.
Out of 20 initially outstanding polling stations, presiding officers were able to authenticate 13 pink sheets submitted by the NPP.
This re-collation follows a High Court ruling that directed the EC to address the disputes and re-collate results in four constituencies, including Ablekuma North.
However, the process has only deepened tensions, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in the energy sector
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed optimism in Ghana’s ability to navigate the looming power crisis, popularly referred to as “Dumsor.”
He acknowledged challenges in the energy sector, which has been discovered by his new administration.
However, he emphasised that the country’s strong human resources is the possible solution to deal with the impending challenge.
“But there are a few surprises that have come up in respect of the energy sector and some aspects of government decisions and actions over the last several years. I think that Ghana has the human resources to be able to deal with the situation and turn things around as quickly as possible,” he noted during a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank, on January 8, 2024.
President Mahama, reacting to the transition process, said “The transition has taken place. It’s been smooth, it’s been cordial.”
The president’s remarks follows concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, concerning a severe fuel shortage which has the potential of leading the country into an energy crisis.
He disclosed this after the inauguration of President Mahama on January 7, 2024,
Jinapor revealed that Ghana’s fuel reserves are critically low, with only five hours of supply remaining.
Jinapor further criticised the outgoing administration for failing to secure adequate fuel supplies, leaving the incoming government in a critical position.

Musician Nacee has admonished the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, to fulfill his promises to the people of Ghana.
According to him, these promises encouraged the young people of Ghana to vote massively for him, and therefore reneging on it will be a big blow for him.
“The only advice I have for John Dramani Mahama is that whatever promises he gave to the youth of Ghana, he should do his best to fulfil them because the whole of Ghana is green, and it shows that Ghana has gained independence.
“I am happy to be part of the second independence, and I am happy to be part of the independence. The first one was with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah; I wasn’t there, but today I was here some,” he told TV3 in an interview.

The irate youth are said to have stormed the TOR office in Tema
A group of young men numbering over 100 stormed the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) less than 24 hours after the swearing-in of Ghana’s new president, demanding the removal of appointees from the previous administration.
According to sources within the refinery, the youth insisted that no official from the outgoing government should remain in office.
Some members of the group also claimed they were at the refinery to seek employment under the new administration.
The situation required the intervention of TOR’s security personnel, who managed to calm the crowd and eventually persuaded them to leave the premises without any incident.
The refinery, which has a processing capacity of 45,000 barrels per stream day, has been non-operational for several months under the previous administration.
Attempts to secure a private partner to revive TOR’s operations were unsuccessful, leaving the facility idle.

President John Mahama says Ghana has the expertise and human resources necessary to address the ongoing energy crisis effectively.
Speaking on the matter, President Mahama acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome them.
“There are a few surprises that have come up in respect of the energy sector, in respect of some aspects of governments decisions and things over the last seven years.
“But I think that Ghana has the human resources to be able to deal with the situation and turn things around as quickly as possible,” he stated.

Mr Jinapor revealed that the outgoing Nana Akufo-Addo-led government had failed to procure the necessary fuel despite multiple warnings.
“If you look at the heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don’t have enough to last two days. So, in two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has stated that the incoming government will require $89.90 million to purchase liquid fuel in the absence of natural gas.
According to them, this is crucial to ensuring that electricity generation companies can produce sufficient power to meet national demand.
The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAGP), which supplies natural gas to the country, is scheduled to undergo a major maintenance work, known as pigging, and will be unable to supply gas to Ghana for nearly one month.
In a statement issued by GRIDCo, the maintenance of the gas pipelines from Nigeria to Ghana by WAGP was initially set to take place in October 2024. However, the previous government postponed the maintenance to January 2025.
According to GRIDCo, if WAGP proceeds with the maintenance, the country will face a severe power crisis, resulting in frequent power outages, commonly referred to as dumsor, as the power producers do not have sufficient liquid fuel to generate more electricity.

The African Centre for International Affairs (AfriCIA) has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama on his election as President in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

A statement issued in Accra by Joseph Boateng, the Executive Director, AfriCIA said the Centre highly acknowledged the victory of the first-ever female Vice President of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

A veteran journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has raised concerns about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) public statements regarding their chances of winning the 2024 presidential election, despite internal surveys showing a different picture.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Pratt brought to attention an interview that took place months before the election, pointing out the NPP’s awareness of their electoral defeat.
“You (Randy Abbey) had a discussion with a very prominent person on the Bawumia campaign who actually admitted that about 10 months before the elections they knew that they were going to lose. Yes! And that their study had showed that their votes were appreciating.
“If they knew they were trailing, how did they get the gusto, you know, to be looking us in the face and to be telling us that we’re going to win, some claiming that by landslide and so on, when they knew that we’re trailing,” he said.
Kwesi Pratt went on to question the party’s confidence in claiming victory, pointing out the inconsistency between their internal data and public claims.
“My point is simply this, if they knew they were trailing, why did they get the gusto to be looking us in the face and telling us they were going to win, claiming that by landslide and so on. They knew they were trailing,” he indicated.
President John Dramani Mahama defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with 6,328,397 votes, which represented 56.55% of the valid votes, while Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

The Ghanaian government will require $89.90 million to procure liquid fuel to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply as the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) halts natural gas delivery for maintenance.
WAGP, which supplies natural gas to Ghana, is scheduled to undergo a major maintenance operation, known as pigging, leaving the country without gas for nearly a month.
This critical maintenance, initially planned for October 2024, was postponed to January 2025 by the previous government, creating an urgent need for alternative power generation measures.
In a statement issued by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the national power transmission company warned of severe power outages—commonly referred to as Dumsor—if liquid fuel is not procured to operate thermal plants during the maintenance period.
“There is a deficit in generation capacity during the period of the WAPCO pigging exercise.
Therefore, it is necessary to procure liquid fuel to operate thermal plants in Tema to meet demand,” GRIDCo stated.
The maintenance work on the gas pipeline, which transports natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana, is vital for ensuring the long-term reliability of the gas supply.
However, it poses an immediate challenge for power producers in Ghana, who rely heavily on natural gas for electricity generation.
GRIDCo emphasized that the procurement of $89.90 million worth of liquid fuel is critical to bridging the gap in power generation and avoiding disruptions to the country’s energy supply.

Renowned US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Kwaku Azar, has expressed dissatisfaction with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s dismissal of his petition to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as reported by Ghana Web on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
In a Facebook post on January 6, 2024, Kwaku Azar criticized the president’s rejection of his petition, describing the decision as a “prima facie determination” based on initial impressions.
He disagreed with the ruling, stating, “We disagree with the president’s prima facie determination on our petition and will take additional steps for it to get a fair hearing.”
The petition, which was submitted by Azar, accused Chief Justice Torkornoo of misbehaviour and incompetence. However, in a statement issued by the presidency on the same day, Akufo-Addo, after consulting with the Council of State, rejected the petition.
The president concluded that the petition did not present a prima facie case justifying further action.
The statement emphasized that the allegations, which included claims of panel reconstitution, issuing practice directions, and constitutional breaches, lacked supporting evidence.
The president’s office noted that Azar had failed to provide credible documentation or factual evidence to substantiate his claims. Additionally, it affirmed that the practices cited were consistent with established law.
Kwaku Azar, however, remained resolute in his stance, asserting in a follow-up post, “Whatever is dismissed today will resonate tomorrow, standing as a testament to the enduring pursuit of justice.”
This statement indicates his intention to continue pushing for what he sees as a fair evaluation of his petition.
The government urgently needs nearly $90 million to avert a looming power crisis caused by insufficient fuel supplies for thermal plants, according to a report by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).
The GRIDCo report outlines that the funds are required to procure liquid fuel, such as light crude oil, to operate thermal plants in Tema and meet growing electricity demand.
The crisis stems from a generation capacity deficit following a pigging exercise conducted by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO), which temporarily disrupted natural gas supply.
The GRIDCo report details key strategies to mitigate the impact of the fuel shortage and maintain grid stability:
Rescheduling Planned Maintenance: Revising the schedules for generator shutdowns to avoid overlaps with the WAPCO maintenance period.
Securing Alternative Fuels: Procuring sufficient quantities of light crude oil or other liquid fuels to substitute natural gas for thermal power generation.
Load Management Measures: Considering load-shedding as a last resort to stabilize the national grid in the event of severe power shortages.
The GRIDCo also announced the maintenance of gas pipelines from Nigeria to Ghana by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAGP) which was initially scheduled for October 2024 but was postponed by the previous government to January 2025.

Stakeholders have called for expedited government action to secure funding and implement the recommended measures to avert the crisis.
