“EOCO, We Have Not Heard Anything From You” – Ashigbey Slams Delay in Probing Yamin, Abanga

0

The Convenor of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged state authorities to swiftly arrest National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives Joseph Yamin and Yakubu Abanga over their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, according to Citinewsroom.

Yamin, the party’s National Organiser, and Abanga, the National Vice Chairman, have been named in recent reports linking them to galamsey operations.

Dr. Ashigbey expressed worry that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has yet to act on directives from the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, who on July 15 instructed the investigative body to question the two opposition figures.

He stated that failure to take action sends the wrong signal in the fight against illegal mining.

Speaking on Channel One TV, he insisted that political connections should not shield individuals from accountability.

“The NDC’s National Organiser, National Vice Chairman, have been pointed out by the AG to investigate them. Unfortunately, EOCO, we have not heard anything from you,” he said, calling for urgent arrests and investigations.

Beyond the NDC executives, Dr. Ashigbey also raised concerns over the case involving Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

He argued that silence surrounding his reported links to Akonta Mining undermines the credibility of the anti-galamsey campaign.

He further suggested that Oscar Ofori Larbi, NDC MP for Aowin, should face scrutiny following claims by some chiefs that he is connected to illegal mining activities.

His remarks come in the wake of a helicopter crash on August 6, which killed eight people allegedly linked to galamsey-related operations.

The tragic incident has reignited calls for a decisive and impartial crackdown on illegal mining across the country.

Regal Agbada and Kaftan Styles for the Modern Man

0

Agbada and kaftan outfits are two of the most iconic and timeless traditional wears for men across West Africa, especially in Nigeria and Ghana. These outfits are not only cultural symbols but also fashion statements that reflect elegance, pride, and class. Whether it’s a wedding, traditional ceremony, or festive gathering, the modern man can never go wrong with a well-tailored agbada or kaftan.

Agbada Styles:

Agbada is a flowing, wide-sleeved robe usually worn over a matching inner shirt and trousers (known as “sokoto”). Traditionally worn by royalty and dignitaries, agbadas have now evolved into fashionable pieces embraced by younger men. Today’s agbada styles often feature intricate embroidery around the chest, neck, and sleeves, sometimes with monogrammed initials. Colors like royal blue, deep burgundy, white, and black remain popular, while bold colors and unique patterns add a modern twist. Accessories like caps (fila), beads, and stylish loafers complete the look.

Kaftan Styles:

Kaftans are more minimalist but equally stylish. These long tunics, usually worn with matching trousers, are perfect for both casual and semi-formal settings. They are comfortable yet sophisticated, often made from high-quality fabrics like cotton, brocade, or cashmere. Modern kaftan designs now include pocket accents, zippered collars, and subtle embroidery. Neutral tones like cream, grey, and navy are classy choices, though vibrant colors can also make a bold statement.

Both agbada and kaftan outfits exude confidence and heritage. When tailored properly, they offer the perfect blend of tradition and modern fashion, making them must-haves in every fashionable man’s wardrobe.

I Was Born And Raised In England I’m Proud Of That But My Dad DNA Is Mixed From So Many Tribes-Elba

0

World-renowned British actor Idris Elba has opened up about his heritage, revealing how his cultural background shapes both his identity and his outlook on life.

Speaking in a recent interview on NoireTV, the actor, best known for his roles in Luther, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and The Wire, reflected on the complexity of his roots and how they have influenced his sense of self.

Elba explained that although he was born and raised in England, which he remains proud of, his story is not defined solely by his British upbringing. Instead, he views himself as a product of diverse cultural strands, thanks to his parents’ varied backgrounds.

“My dad’s DNA is probably mixed from so many different types of tribes, you know. So that has been the very feeling I have every time I open my mouth about where I’m from. Yeah, I’m from England.

I was born and raised there. I’m proud of that. But out of that comes this sort of I’m an explorer. You know? I’m an explorer of myself. I’m an explorer of the cultures that I’m from,” Elba said.

The award-winning actor revealed that his curiosity about his origins led him to undergo a DNA test when he was about 29 years old.

While he had always known that his maternal grandfather was American, the results of the test surprised him, showing that his father had Syrian roots.

“I remember at some point in my life, I was probably about 29 or so, I took my DNA test. I knew my mom had an American father, but my dad’s from Syria,” he disclosed during the interview.

Elba noted that the discovery broadened his appreciation for the diversity embedded in his lineage. He described this awareness as a journey of exploration, saying that every time he speaks about where he comes from, he feels a sense of wonder about the multiple identities that converge within him.

The actor’s reflections highlight a growing trend among celebrities and public figures who use DNA testing to trace their ancestry, often uncovering unexpected connections that reshape how they understand their identity.

For Elba, the results reinforced his perspective of being a “cultural explorer,” navigating between British identity, African heritage, and Middle Eastern ancestry.

Over the years, Elba has often spoken about the importance of embracing one’s roots while also celebrating the shared humanity that transcends borders.

His latest comments emphasize not only pride in his English upbringing but also a commitment to honoring the many cultures that make up his family’s history.

As one of the most recognized British actors on the global stage, Elba’s story resonates with many in today’s interconnected world where heritage, identity, and cultural belonging often extend across continents.

His experience, he said, has deepened his understanding of himself and further strengthened his belief in cultural diversity as a source of strength and pride.

Government hits back at Vincent Assafuah’s allegations

0

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has called out the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, for peddling falsehoods about Mahama’s travel to Japan.

According to him, Assafuah’s claim that President John Dramani Mahama travelled abroad on an expensive private jet is shambolic propaganda.

Ekow Assafuah has alleged on his Facebook page that Mahama has rented a luxurious private jet, which is estimated to cost $15,000 per hour.

He further speculated that, per his estimation above, Mahama’s travel abroad will cost a total of $690,000 if it covers stops in Japan, Singapore, Germany, and finally back to Accra.

However, Kwakye Ofosu, in response, has vehemently refuted the assertion made by the MP, saying Assafuah only dabbled in “a mediocre attempt at propaganda.”

In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, August 18, Kwakye Ofosu insisted that the claims by the MP lacked substance.

“He does not have any facts. He is just wasting everybody’s time with claims that are false… President Mahama has not travelled by private jet.” He said.

He insisted that “President Mahama travelled to Japan via Emirates, and it is something that you can check. It is not a secret.”

He, therefore, rubbished the claims by Assafuah, adding that his (Assafuah’s) allegations were purely orchestrated to tarnish the president’s image and called on the public to disregard the claims.

‘A disgrace of an MP’ – Deputy Chief of Staff slams NPP MP over Mahama private jet claims
He emphasised that Mahama’s travel records are transparent and verifiable.

President Mahama, on Sunday, August 17, 2025, left for a two-nation official visit to Japan and Singapore.

It aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and attracting investments to Ghana.

Chale Wote 2025: Remembering, Reclaiming and Reimagining Africa through Art

0

A GNA Feature by James Amoh Junior

Accra, Aug. 19, GNA –The streets of Osu in Accra throbbed with ancestral memory on Monday as the 15th edition of the Chale Wote Street Art Festival opened with the Day of Remembrance.

It was a ritual procession that merged spirituality, history, and art into one profound experience.

Led by a traditional priest draped in immaculate white calico, his acolytes adorned with strands of purifying green sacred leaves, the procession began at the Osu Klottey Temple, wound through narrow alleyways once burdened by the footsteps of enslaved Africans, and settled at the iconic Independence Arch and Nationalism Park.

A walk of lament and hope it was and a commemoration of loss and a reclamation of vision.

A drummers pounded ancestral rhythms that echoed and awakened Ga Mashie’s ancestral spirits, swirling through the alleyways once trumpled by the tired and whipped feet of enslaved Africans bound for gate of no return at Forts into the belly of ships bound beyond the Atlantic.

With each throb, a “Borborbo” ensemble also had its share of the day as its female dancers twirled ecstatically to the excitement of patrons, mostly people from the diaspora.

This year’s festival, running from August 19 to 24, 2025, adopts the theme, “The Orbs Beneath the Nile Lead to Kongo,” which signals a deeper engagement with Africa’s geopolitical history.

Festival Director Mantse Nii Aryeequaye calls it “a reclamation of the dream that Patrice Lumumba and Kwame Nkrumah once had, to turn Ghana and Congo into a unified state.”

“We are witnessing the greatest geopolitical shift in Africa since independence. ” Nii Aryeequaye tells the Ghana News Agency in an interview.

“Young Africans are awakening to the neo-imperial chokehold of Euro-American power, and through art, festivals like Chale Wote are reclaiming suppressed histories and shaping a Pan-African future, ” he said with smile.

Spiritual undertaking

For many participants, the opening ritual was more than a performance; it was a healing act.

A 60-year-old American artist Stasi Bobo-Lion, saw in it “something close to spiritual.”

Clutching green leaves she had received during the procession, she explained: “We were told these herbs were for protection. To walk with them, dressed in white, was to be part of a sacred calling. I feel so blessed to be here, to stand on the continent my ancestors were taken from.”

The symbolism was powerful; the white linen, the libation, the rhythm of the drums, all gestures towards remembrance of the enslaved, the lost, and the silenced and the return.

Yet it was also about continuity, about honouring heritage while asserting presence.

Festival beyond art

Chale Wote, a Ga word for “Friend, let’s go”, has evolved over its 15-year history into more than a street art festival.

Chale is a Ghanaian colloquial term for friend. It is used for persons who are deemed accepted.

Once centred in James Town, it now spills into Independence Square, Nationalism Park, and the wider Osu municipality.

What began as a platform for murals and street performance has grown into a week-long immersion of visual art, film, fashion, music, design, and dance and the Ghanaian culinary experience.

The Shika Shika Art Fair, hosted at Nationalism Park, will showcase works from Ghana, Brazil, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Americas.

For diaspora visitors, like Brianna Odoi, a perfumer and olfactive artist, the festival is a bridge back to Africa, as she says, “Chale Wote is not only about street partying, it’s about culture, togetherness, and learning from one another.”

Nii Aryeequaye reinforced this ethos, stating that, “Pan-Africanism drives our practice. When people of African descent from around the world converge here because of Chale Wote, it shows we are doing something right.”

Stories woven in colour

The art itself mirrors the theme of reclamation. Sculptures rise out of recycled metal, murals bloom across colonial walls, and performers claim public spaces with bold interventions.

For Stasi Bobo-Ligon, the collaboration is as important as the exhibition and that “there are stories we share across Ghana and America.”

“Through art, we can tell those stories together, our common struggles, our joys, and even our differences. It’s another way of pushing tourism and the arts economy forward,” she notes.

At the Shika Shika Art Fair, installations interrogate Africa’s place in global politics while celebrating indigenous knowledge.

One striking piece reimagines the Congo River as an orb of light linking Africa’s destiny to its resources, while another juxtaposes Kwame Nkrumah’s life with contemporary graffiti to reflect the unfinished project of Liberation.

In much the same way, Ghanaian artist Charity Derby Akeiti’s work echoes the cultural bridges between the Ga people of Osu and communities in Congo; two societies whose cultural identities are deeply shaped by ancestral memory and the symbolism of water.

The Ga’s seafaring traditions and sacred rituals of remembrance mirror Congo’s riverine spirituality, where water is revered as both a source of life and a passageway of memory.

By weaving symbols of these intertwined heritages, Ms Akeiti’s art reminds festival-goers that the survival of African culture rests on reclaiming suppressed traditions and celebrating the shared rhythms that bind West and Central Africa together.

Tourism and trade

Beyond culture, Chale Wote injects life into Accra’s economy. Street vendors sell everything from kente scarves to grilled tilapia, while small businesses thrive on the influx of visitors.

Over the years, the festival has created thousands of direct and indirect jobs, according to organisers.

Hotels in Osu may fill to capacity; ride-hailing services and tro-tros buzz with festival-goers; artisans find new markets for their craft.

Nii Aryeequaye indicates that Chale Wote has evolved into a major driver of Ghana’s creative economy, serving as one of the clearest examples of how art fuels national economic activity.

Space of healing and return

For diasporans, however, the gains are less material and more spiritual.

“Everyone here says ‘welcome home.”Ms Bobo-Ligon says with a smile, and adds that “It makes me feel I belong. I’ve traced 70 per cent of my ancestry to West Africa. To walk these streets, to feel this welcome – it’s priceless.”

The festival has become n pilgrimage, drawing African Americans, Caribbeans, and Afro-Europeans seeking reconnection and restoration.

Unlike the solemnity of visiting slave castles, Chale Wote offers a space of joy, art, and resilience, a celebration of survival as much as a remembrance of trauma.

Festival of the future

As the week unfolds, performances will move to Independence Square for the Grand Concert, where Ghanaian and international acts promise Accra electrifying nights.

The closing, as always, will be a carnival of music, colour, and movement, transforming Accra into Africa’s cultural capital.

Yet at its core, Chale Wote remains faithful to its community roots. Its remembrance rituals bind it to the painful history of Osu, its creative interventions insist on art as resistance, and its Pan-African ethos bridges the gaps of geography and time.

As Brianna Odoi aptly puts it: “It’s about togetherness. It’s about learning from one another. Chale Wote reminds us that we are one people.”

Epilogue

When the last drumbeat fades and the murals are painted over, the memory of Chale Wote lingers, not just in photographs and videos, but in the shared consciousness of a people reclaiming their story.

From Osu’s alleyways to Black Star Square, from Ghana to Congo, from Africa to its diaspora, the festival is a reminder that art is not just about beauty, it is about survival, memory, and libération and spirituality.

Fifteen years on, Chale Wote is more than an arts festival. It is Africa in motion, Africa remembering, and Africa reimagining itself.

Everyone is Charle (friend) and, everyone is beckoned to come along (wote).

Afenyo-Markin blames job losses on President Mahama’s policy reversals

Afenyo-Markin is the minority leader in parliament Afenyo-Markin is the minority leader in parliament

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused President John Dramani Mahama of worsening unemployment by scrapping flagship programmes introduced under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking at the Asante Students Union’s grand durbar at the University of Ghana, the Effutu MP said initiatives such as One District, One Factory (1D1F) and tax exemptions had spurred investment and created jobs.

Their cancellation, he argued, has discouraged investors and slowed down economic growth.

“Nearly one in four Ghanaians wakes up each day without a job. With unemployment officially around 15 percent, this is no longer just an economic challenge, it’s a threat to national security,” Afenyo-Markin cautioned.

He warned that scrapping 1D1F and suspending tax waivers had “killed opportunities for sustainable employment” and urged young people to be innovative in creating their own opportunities, even as they demand a more enabling environment from government.

The Minority Leader also expressed concern over rising unpaid loans, revealing that small businesses owe MASLOC over GH¢291 million after 12 years, while banks recorded more than GH¢654 million in bad debts in just five months this year.

He further noted the growing trend of mobile money loan defaults, warning that borrowers disappearing into “digital darkness” posed risks to the country’s financial stability.

Afenyo-Markin called on government to adopt business-friendly policies that would inspire innovation, attract investment, and drive sustainable job creation.

Target unaccredited religious titles, not Ayensu-Danquah – Palgrave to GTEC – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

A former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has called on the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to shift its attention from Deputy Health Minister Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah and instead investigate religious bodies and individuals using unaccredited titles.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, August 19, Dr. Boakye-Danquah argued that the Commission’s focus on Dr. Ayensu-Danquah’s academic credentials was misplaced, given the widespread use of honorary and unaccredited titles across other sectors.

“GTEC should leave the Deputy Minister alone. I think that there are people who are using titles that they must pursue. From a religious background, I know that some people hold themselves with certain titles. GTEC is supposed to look at all institutions as they are,” he said.

He further cited theological institutions in Ghana without mentioning specific names, which he claimed lack proper accreditation, yet continue to issue certificates and confer titles on individuals.

“We know that in this country, we have theological institutions that are accredited, and people go through to acquire studies and certification. I would want to entreat GTEC to turn their attention to the religious bodies those that are using Reverend, Rev. Dr., etc., that are also not accredited. I think GTEC should turn their attention there, and that will be able to sanitise the system,” he added.

His comments come amid an ongoing dispute between GTEC and Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, a Deputy Minister for Health and Member of Parliament for Essikadu-Ketan. GTEC has refuted her claim to the academic rank of professor, cautioning her against presenting herself with the title.

In a letter to the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, GTEC explained that it had earlier asked Dr. Ayensu-Danquah to provide proof of her professorial appointment by August 11, 2025.

Her legal team, led by David K. Ametefe, responded on August 8, insisting that she was appointed an Assistant Professor of Surgery by the University of Utah in the United States. They argued that GTEC had no authority to demand evidence of such an appointment since it was made outside Ghana.

The lawyers have since criticised GTEC’s actions, warning that if the Commission fails to withdraw its correspondence within 14 days, they will seek legal remedies to protect their client’s reputation.

Foreign Affairs Ministry cautions public against fraud and unauthorised agents

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has issued a strong caution to the public against dealing with unauthorised persons or agents in connection with consular and other ministry-related services.

In a statement released on Monday, August 18, the Ministry emphasised its commitment to protecting the integrity of its operations.

It further warned that the use of forged or fraudulent documents constitutes a criminal offence and that such cases would be reported to law enforcement authorities for prosecution.

The Ministry urged citizens to rely solely on its official communication platforms, including the Ministry’s website, verified social media pages, and recognised media outlets, for accurate updates and service procedures.

It stressed that anyone seeking consular assistance must deal directly with designated officers at the Ministry’s headquarters or through Ghana’s accredited missions abroad.

Suspicious activity or suspected fraud, the statement added, should be reported immediately.

As part of efforts to curb fraudulent practices, the Ministry reiterated that no payments should be made to unauthorised individuals under any circumstance.

All official transactions must be carried out in cash only and exclusively with officials from the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department stationed at the Ministry’s premises. Receipts issued at the point of payment must be presented for processing.

The release also included updated information on fees and timelines for the most requested services.

“The attestation and legalisation of documents will cost GH¢200 and take five working days to process. A Travel Certificate is issued within two to three working days at a fee of GH¢200, while a Laissez-Passer attracts the same charge and processing time.

“For document attestation and legalisation, applicants are required to submit original documents verified by the Judicial Service of Ghana along with valid identification, pay the approved fee at the Ministry’s payment point, and attach the receipt to the documents for processing,” the statement noted.

It added, “Travel Certificates require submission of a signed application letter stating the purpose of travel, the bio-data page of a valid or expired passport, two passport-sized photographs, and a flight itinerary, with applicants advised to confirm with their airline that Travel Certificates are accepted for boarding.

“The application for a Laissez-Passer must include a formal letter, parental consent in relevant cases, the vehicle registration number, and proof of identity such as a Ghana Card or passport bio-data page for both applicant and driver.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry has encouraged all Ghanaians, whether at home or abroad, to remain vigilant and follow the proper channels to avoid being defrauded.

“For further information, the public was directed to contact the Consular and Humanitarian Affairs Bureau via telephone on +233 204 552 750 or email at [email protected],” it noted.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance approach to fraud, the Ministry assured citizens of its dedication to efficient, transparent, and client-friendly service delivery.

MOG Beatz (R) accuses Shatta Wale (L) of selling his catalogue MOG Beatz (R) accuses Shatta Wale (L) of selling his catalogue

It looks like old wounds are reopening, as sound producer MOG Beatz is back in the ‘ring’ with Dancehall musician Shatta Wale.

This time, he is accusing Shatta of pulling a similar trick to the one that first sparked their fallout four years ago.

Back in 2021, MOG Beatz called out Shatta Wale, claiming he produced 10 songs on the Reign album but never received a dime for his work.

That development sparked weeks of back-and-forth, with MOG insisting he had been underappreciated despite his contribution to the project.

Shatta Wale reportedly loses $2M EP deal amid fallout from negative publicity

Fast forward to the early hours of August 19, 2025, MOG has claimed history is repeating itself, this time, on a much bigger scale.

In a series of heated posts on X, the music producer alleged that Shatta Wale had sold a music catalogue, which included songs he (MOG) himself produced, to an international company for millions of dollars.

According to MOG, the deal was done without his knowledge, consent, or agreement, and worse still, his production credits were reportedly stripped off and replaced with Shatta Wale’s name.

The producer went on to suggest that Shatta Wale’s sudden show of wealth, including luxury vehicles like a Rolls-Royce, was financed by the alleged catalogue sale.

‘We need to form our political party; the oldies are not ready to listen’ – Shatta Wale insists

He argued that on a “normal day,” the musician wouldn’t have been able to afford such cars, implying that the money came from misrepresenting ownership of the songs to appear wealthier than his peers.

MOG Beatz insisted he would not sit by and allow his work to be erased or his intellectual property exploited in a scam.

He described the alleged deal as a fraudulent scheme, accusing Shatta of deceiving the foreign company while dragging him into the mess by using his productions without credit.

According to MOG, this is not just about money but about integrity. He reminded fans of how their 2021 fallout ended unresolved, with Shatta never compensating him for the beats he produced.

He said the fact that the same dispute has resurfaced in 2025 shows Shatta “did not learn “sense” from their first fight.

“The international company you scam them millions of dollars, you for sort them out, you and them for go talk. Ebi them go come talk to me later after you settle everything them finish, then them go come come meet me. Why them curse you? 2021 ebi you come tell me say the beats I produce give you all be GH¢5 beats, insults upon insults eno be problem.

“Fast forward 2025, you carry these same songs I produce give you, put your name for under say ebi produced by Shatta Wale, 25 songs plus, you go take advance, millions of dollars, just to go and buy Rolls Royce and cars to show you you get money pass Ghanaian artistes.

“The 2021 fight it happen, you no learn sense from inside, the money you no pay me. On a normal day, that Rolls-Royce you no fit accord am. Why you for come involve me and scam the company using my property after 2021, why you no learn lesson. Your fans, I know them go come side you and things all, eno be problem, if you think this one be defamation of character, make you bring evidence, me to I go bring my evidence,” MOG Beatz stated in a video.

What Mahama’s amnesty to prisoners means for Agradaa

Repented priestess Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa Repented priestess Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa

Founder and leader of Heaven Way Church, repented priestess Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, is back in the social trends after President John Dramani Mahama, on August 18, 2025, acting in line with the Constitution of Ghana, granted amnesty to 998 inmates out of the 1,014 recommended by the Prisons Service Council.

Nana Agradaa, who is serving a 15-year jail term on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences, has been dragged into the conversation.

The list of the 998 inmates granted amnesty was not accompanied by specific names, raising public debate and demands for clarification on whether Nana Agradaa was part of those freed.

“Dear President John Dramani Mahama, Nana Agradaa shouldn’t be part of these people. Do this and save your party as well as your political career,” a social media user said.

President Mahama grants amnesty to 998 prisoners

“President Mahama grants 998 prisoners amnesty, is Nana Agradaa now a free bird? The first gentleman of Ghana, President Mahama, has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners according to the information gathered,” another questioned.

“So, this @JDMahama ‘pardon’… quick question: does it also cover Nana Agradaa? Is she now free to resume her evangelism of double-your-money ministries? Just checking the fine print of this presidential amnesty for fraudsters.”

Many also argued that Nana Agradaa should not be classified as a first-time offender, although this was her first prison sentence, because of her long history of fraudulent practices.

Nana Agradaa sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labour

However, according to a report by Graphic Online, Nana Agradaa did not make the cut for the presidential amnesty.

The categories of convicts who benefited from the amnesty included First-time offenders, prisoners on death row, those serving life sentences, seriously ill inmates, prisoners above 70 years of age, nursing mothers, and petitioners.

In all, 787 first-time offenders were pardoned, 87 death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment and 51 life sentences were reduced to 20 years’ definite terms.

Additionally, 33 seriously ill inmates and 36 prisoners aged over 70 were granted amnesty, alongside two nursing mothers and two petitioners.

Anti-corruption fight needs collective action, not silos – Mary Addah

0

Transparency International Ghana has urged citizens to play an active role in holding the government accountable in the fight against corruption.

Speaking at a high-level stakeholder workshop in Tamale on government’s anti-corruption commitments, the Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, Mary Awelana Addah, said the campaign against corruption has for too long been led mainly by civil society organisations (CSOs) and advocacy groups, while ordinary citizens have been left out.

She stressed that meaningful progress can only be achieved when all Ghanaians get involved.

“What we are doing is the genesis of the fact that we need collective action if the fight against corruption is to succeed. This is a partnership between ACEP, the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, and Transparency International Ghana,” Madam Addah noted.

“In many instances, the results of our anti-corruption fight have not been citizen-driven. It has always remained within a certain silos. We believe it is time for everyone to reflect on the various efforts and support the fight to secure the gains we need.”

She further called on citizens to keep a close watch on the government’s campaign promises and demand accountability whenever leadership falls short.

“We cannot track progress in Accra alone; we need everyone. We also have a pledge—the eighth pledge of corruption—and we want society to agree and accept that there is a need to fight corruption,” she added.

The workshop brought together stakeholders to deliberate on practical ways of strengthening citizen participation in the fight against corruption and ensuring the government delivers on its commitments.

Government hits back at Vincent Assafuah’s false allegations

Felix Kwakye Ofosu (L) Ekow Vincent Assafuah (R) Felix Kwakye Ofosu (L) Ekow Vincent Assafuah (R)

It aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and attracting investments to Ghana.

He explained that the actor’s action against Emelia Brobbey is unwarranted.

“Sandra, during the interview, said she has no regret walking with LilWin. Even Emelia Brobbey praised LilWin for that. Due to that question, see the way Kwadwo went on live to insult her.

‘Defiant’ Assafuah rubbishes claim that Mahama used commercial flight for Japan, Singapore trip

0

Vincent Ekow Assafuah is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo Vincent Ekow Assafuah is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has defended his claim that President John Dramani Mahama used a private jet for his official visit to Japan and Singapore.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on August 18, 2025, Assafuah indicated that even though the government has explained that President Mahama used a commercial flight, it does not mean that the private jet he mentioned could not have been used at some point during the trip.

He alleged that President Mahama might have boarded a commercial flight from the Kotoka International Airport to go and meet an awaiting private jet.

‘A disgrace of an MP’ – Deputy Chief of Staff slams NPP MP over Mahama private jet claims

“I’m not interested in the president; I’m interested in the president and the delegation. Because in their own statement, they made mention of the president travelling with a delegation.

“Why are you singling out the president? Is it the case that the jet is meeting the president, or if you like, some other people, somewhere? That is why the president, probably, if what they are alleging is the case, used a commercial airline which we don’t even know.

“If what they are saying is true, the president did not use the aircraft that I’m talking about, it does not mean that the president will not use it along his trip,” he added.

Assafuah alleged on social media that a private jet, with registration number M-BAEP, was used by the president for his recent trip.

He went further to estimate the supposed costs of the flight, claiming it would run into several hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the route they will use.

Luxury Travel Claims: Government hits back at Vincent Assafuah’s allegations

Per his calculations, a 7-hour flight from Accra would cost about $105,000, with an additional 12-hour leg to Japan costing $180,000. He further suggested that a stop in Singapore would add another $105,000, and a 20-hour return trip to Germany and Accra could add $300,000.

“This private jet, M-BAEP, left Accra this morning around 7 am. It is estimated to cost $15,000 per hour to rent this flight. A simple calculation shows that the 7-hour journey already covered amounts to $105,000. If the flight proceeds to Japan, which is likely to take about 12 hours, that would be another $180,000.

“If it then continues to Singapore, which is approximately 7 hours away, that would add another $105,000. Finally, if the jet flies directly to Germany and then back to Accra, a total of about 20 hours return trip, that would add another $300,000,” Assafuah wrote.

The high stakes agreement everyone in Jomoro is talking about

CEO of PHDC, Dr Aubynn, (L) in a handshake with CEO of Mannschaft Engineering, Maxwell Adu CEO of PHDC, Dr Aubynn, (L) in a handshake with CEO of Mannschaft Engineering, Maxwell Adu

Ghana’s ambition to establish a world-class petroleum and petrochemical complex has received a significant boost following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) and Mannschaft Engineering and Infrastructure Systems, a Ghanaian firm, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

This strategic partnership empowers Mannschaft Engineering and Infrastructure Systems to provide financial, logistical, and technical expertise to advance the transformative Petroleum Hub project.

As part of the agreement, Mannschaft is obligated to contribute GH¢150 million as partial compensation for landowners whose properties fall within the 20,000-acre site designated for the project.

Mannschaft will also play a critical role in resettling communities affected by Phase One of the initiative, while delivering financial, logistical, and technical support for the construction of this initial phase. This will see Mannschaft make an additional investment of GH¢150million into the petroleum hub project.

At the signing ceremony, Dr Toni Aubynn, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the PHDC, expressed profound enthusiasm, describing the agreement as a monumental stride toward securing compensation and enabling the project’s commencement.

“This partnership is a tremendous relief. Securing even half of the required funding for compensation alleviates significant pressure on the PHDC and accelerates our timeline for developing the Petroleum Hub.”

Dr. Aubynn emphasised the transformative potential of the collaboration, expressing unwavering confidence that Mannschaft’s involvement will expedite construction and ensure high-caliber engineering and logistical services for Phase One.

He lauded Mannschaft, a Ghanaian enterprise, for its bold investment in the hub and urged other local firms to follow suit, reinforcing the project’s role as a catalyst for national development.

“I am elated to witness this milestone, the culmination of extensive behind-the-scenes efforts. This MoU secures funding for Phase One compensation, and I am confident that both parties will uphold their commitments. The PHDC is fully dedicated to implementing measures to achieve the agreement’s objectives.”

On behalf of the Minister of Energy and Green Transition and His Excellency President John Mahama, Dr Aubynn thanked Mannschaft for their consistent commitments to the project and hoped the MoU shall translate into actionable projects, Maxwell Adu, Chief Executive Officer of Mannschaft Engineering and Infrastructure Systems, hailed the Petroleum Hub as a visionary endeavor to position Ghana as a leading energy and industrial hub in Africa.

He affirmed that Mannschaft’s mission aligns seamlessly with the hub’s objectives, pledging to leverage the company’s expertise in energy and logistics to drive the construction of Phase One and contribute to a project poised to revolutionize Ghana’s energy sector.

What’s next after the MoU

Following the signing of the MoU, Mannschaft will disburse GH¢150 million to the Lands Commission as partial compensation for affected landowners.

Subsequently, the Lands Commission will issue an administrative fiat, formally declaring the acquisition of the designated land and outlining the process for compensating impacted individuals and families.

Frederick Acheampong is Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association Frederick Acheampong is Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association

Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, also known as Fred Achie, has clarified that all three proposals were voted on, once, because they fall under one article.

According to him, the three proposals deliberated on at the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress are within Article 37 of the GFA statutes, which led members to vote once on their approval.

The GFA ExCo member explained that the controversies in the public among some individuals questioning the voting process are baseless because they align with the statutes.

Ghana FA boss defends Black Stars player after ugly episode in Germany

“All three proposals fall under one article, so, we can’t vote on each of them. If that’s the case, we wouldn’t have finished the voting process by now. The GFA statutes demand that, even if you disagree. For instance, I was against the Exco membership at 12 and wanted 22, but that wasn’t done. Even the Ghana constitution has instances where things are put together and voted on once.

“The amendment comes under Article 37. So, 37.2 talks about the election of a vice president, which will now change to allow for two vice presidents. Article 37.3 talks about the term of the president, which is four years for two terms but will now change to allow for three terms of four years. So, they weren’t different; it was one article we voted on,” Achie explained.

The 31st Ordinary Congress of the GFA extended the term limit of the president of the Ghana Football Association from two to three terms.

Congress also voted to accept the proposal for a second Vice President of the GFA, who will be a woman.

Hassan Ayariga faces off with GTEC boss on live TV

Ayariga (L) accuses Prof Jinapor (R) of lying about sending him a letter to prove his ‘Dr’ title Ayariga (L) accuses Prof Jinapor (R) of lying about sending him a letter to prove his ‘Dr’ title

The founder of the All Peoples Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, clashed with the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof Ahmed Jinapor, over the brouhaha surrounding his use of the doctoral title.

During a panel discussion on JoyNews PM Express on August 18, 2025, Prof Jinapor indicated that his outfit’s demand for some public figures to show proof of the academic titles they have been using does not amount to a witch hunt.

‘Bring your CV, so we compare it with mine’ – Dr Ayensu-Danquah fires GTEC boss

He said that in the case of the former presidential candidate, a letter was given to him to show proof of his PhD credentials, but it has not been done.

“In the case of my good senior brother, Hassan Ayariga, he has two honorary doctorates and he says he has a PhD. We are not even going after the honorary doctorate; we are saying that if you have a PhD, produce evidence. If you produce the evidence, and that evidence is verifiable and authentic, you can use your doctorate title.

“We have written to him. He has written back to us officially. What is the means of writing? The means of writing is communication. He’s communicated a lot to us and he knows that GTEC has flagged his professorship,” Prof Jinapor said.

Reacting to this, Hassan Ayariga said that he had not been given any letter by GTEC on the matter.

Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah does not hold the title of ‘professor’ in any capacity – GTEC

He indicated that the only reason he has not provided evidence of his academic credentials is because of the way GTEC was handling the matter, by sharing the so-called letter they issued to him with the media.

“With all due respect to my younger brother, that is not true. If that was true, we wouldn’t have been here. How long will it take me to provide a piece of paper?… How long will it take me to go into my wardrobe and pull out a piece of paper that is written there PhD, to give it to you? How long will it take?

“But the way you destroyed my reputation by telling people you wrote to me, and the letter is in the media, and I never received it. Can you prove to the world that you have given me a letter? I dare you to prove that you handed me a letter… Do you have proof that you have given me a letter? Do you have proof?” he fumed.

He added that his response to GTEC was to question them on the letter which they supposedly wrote to him, but found its way to the media.

79th Independence Day celebration of India commemorated in Accra

0

The 79th Independence Day celebration of India has been held in Accra with a flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by the singing of the Indian national anthem at the residence of the Indian High Commissioner in Ghana, Manish Gupta.

Hundreds of members of the Indian community in the country attended the event, which was marked with much enthusiasm and patriotism, last Friday.

The event, which was on the theme: “Naya Bharat – New India,” provided an opportunity for the Indian community to come together and celebrate their shared heritage and culture.

It also featured the display of Indian culture through songs and dance performed by young Indian nationals who were at the function with their parents.

Development

Mr Gupta eulogised the evolution of India over the decades, describing it as a testament to the impressive socio-economic development.

“Since independence, our journey has been a testament to impressive socio-economic development. Today, India stands as the world’s fastest-growing major economy and the fourth largest globally,” he said.

The ambassador added that the theme also encapsulated the shared vision of a prosperous and secure nation by 2047.

He said that the celebration also served as a moment to honour the vision of the country’s founding fathers and remember the great sacrifices they had made.

“India’s struggle for independence under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership serves as a powerful inspiration for freedom movements across Asia and Africa.

“Ghana’s journey to independence marked a turning point as it became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to attain freedom, lighting the way for others,” the ambassador added.

He urged the Indian community to unite in their efforts to advance the country’s glorious narrative and to also realise its vision of becoming a developed nation by the centenary of its independence.

Relationship

The ambassador further said that “Prime Minister Modi’s historic state visit to Ghana last month had further strengthened our partnership in West Africa and the Global South, deepening ties that predate Ghana’s independence”.

He also said that the visit marked an important milestone, being the first by an Indian Prime Minister in three decades, thus “opening a new chapter in our warm and friendly relationship”.

Mr Gupta also said that the visit elevated the bilateral ties between the two states to the status of a Comprehensive Partnership, the first of its kind in West Africa.

Potential

The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, in a statement delivered on her behalf by the High Commissioner, said India was moving ahead at a faster pace towards realising its true potential.

She said that the country’s reforms and policies had created an effective platform, which was a semblance of a bright future where every Indian could contribute to the prosperity and happiness of all.

The President touted the economic achievement of India and said the country had made strides in self-reliance amid stress in the global economy.

With a GDP growth rate of 6.5 per cent in the last fiscal, India is the fastest-growing economy in the world.

“Inflation has remained under control, with exports rising; all key indicators show the economy in the pink of health.

This is as much due to carefully calibrated reforms and sagacious economic management as due to the hard work and dedication of our workers and farmers,” she added.

Attempted diversion of sacred Birim River: Groups demand prosecution

0

Three prominent environmental and anti-mining advocacy groups, A Rocha Ghana, Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey and Concerned Citizens of Atewa Landscape, have condemned the alleged illegal attempt to divert the Birim River at Apapam in the Eastern Region.

The groups have called for tougher punitive action including prosecution of the culprits, to deter others from making a similar illegal approach.

In a joint statement, the groups described the act as an assault on Ghana’s natural heritage and a blatant disregard for environmental laws.

The groups claim that a mining company, linked to one Emmanuel Gamah of Kwabeng, has allegedly excavated trenches and constructed a diversion channel to redirect the river, destroying a three-year-old ecological restoration site in the process.

The public uproar that greeted the news of the diversion attracted attention from officers from the Water Resources Commission (WRC), Minerals Commission and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) who moved in quickly to inspect the site.

The officials are reported to have immediately halted the operation to divert the river and subsequently arrested one person for questioning.

Galamsey on Water Bodies: A silent murder that demands justice

The advocacy groups are calling for decisive action, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of Emmanuel Gamah and his associates for illegal mining, environmental destruction, and cultural desecration.

Additionally, the groups are demanding the restoration of the destroyed area and covering of trenches as immediate measures and subsequent investigations into possible complicity of state officials or local leaders.

The groups warned that “we cannot build a sustainable future with this kind of escalating destruction of our rivers and forests” and called on the government and traditional authorities to act decisively to end the growing impunity of illegal miners.

The Birim River, which flows from the Atewa Forest, is a vital water source for communities and industries in the Eastern Region.

However, in recent times, illegal mining activities have increased the turbidity levels of the river, making it difficult for the local inhabitants who depend on it as their source of potable water.

Rihanna showed off her maternity style as she stepped out for an errand run in Los Angeles over the weekend.

The 37-year-old Diamonds singer – who is expecting her third child with partner A$AP Rocky – was also joined by her son RZA, three, for the lowkey outing on Sunday.

Back in May, the performer announced her pregnancy during the 2025 MET Gala as she unveiled her growing baby bump during the star-studded festivities.

For her latest excursion, Rihanna sported a pink and white-striped pajamas set from her Savage x Fenty brand.

She additionally slipped into a pair of pink ballet flats and easily carried a cream-colored purse over her left shoulder.

A patterned scarf was placed on top of her head and the songstress further glammed up the look by adding flashy necklaces as well as a pair of black shades.

An eye-catching watch was worn on her left wrist and Rihanna was also seen carrying a water bottle in her hand to help her stay hydrated.

The singer was spotted strolling through the bustling city and at one point, she also stood closely next to her eldest son.

The Grammy winner shares RZA as well as son Riot, two, with A$AP Rocky – whom she was confirmed to be dating in 2020.

As she prepares to add another addition to their growing family, Rihanna has been showcasing her maternity style on various outings.

Last week, the star put her growing baby bump on display wearing a pink hoodie as well as low-waisted denim jeans during an outing in Beverly Hills.

She slipped into tan boots and opted for flashy jewelry while her dark locks were pulled up into a chic up do.

And earlier this month, Rihanna opted for an eccentric ensemble and donned a $2,845 Spring/Summer 2001 Vintage Issey Miyake dress that was made of colorful material and a dramatic neckline.

The star additionally wore a pair of gray and neon green sneakers to complete the look.

The Umbrella singer previously opened up about her maternity fashion during a past interview with Vogue in 2022 when she was pregnant with her first son RZA.

‘When I found out I was pregnant, I thought to myself, “There’s no way I’m going to go shopping in no maternity aisle.”

‘I’m sorry – it’s too much fun to get dressed up. I’m not going to let that part disappear because my body is changing.’

She also added, ‘I’m hoping that we were able to redefine what’s considered “decent” for pregnant women.

‘My body is doing incredible things right now, and I’m not going to be ashamed of that. This time should feel celebratory. Because why should you be hiding your pregnancy?’

Rihanna announced that she is expecting baby number three while attending the star-studded MET Gala in May.

She initially unveiled her growing baby bump before glamming up for the annual event in NYC, and later offered her thoughts on her pregnancy while walking the red carpet.

‘I’m shockingly feeling okay and not too overwhelmed at the moment,’ she told Entertainment Tonight. ‘I mean at first it was kind of like, “Ahhh.”‘

Rihanna also explained that she would continue to work on her ninth studio album and said there could possibly be ‘a couple videos. But I can sing!’

Her partner A$AP Rocky also gushed about the pregnancy news at the MET Gala while talking to the Associated Press.

‘It feels amazing, you know,’ the rapper told the publication. ‘It’s time that we show the people what we was cooking up.

‘And I’m glad everybody’s happy for us ’cause we definitely happy, you know,’ he continued.

Last month in July, Rihanna made her red carpet debut with her two sons as they attended the premiere of Smurfs in Los Angeles – and also opened up about her growing family during the event.

During an interview with Extra at the screening, she opened up about her little ones joining her.

‘I’m excited for tonight. Tonight is going to be fun. We get to watch the movie together for the first time. I get to watch it in its full completion. So, that should be interesting,’ she expressed.

When questioned how RZA and Riot feel about another addition to their growing family, Rihanna said they were ‘delighted’ followed by laughter.

However, she remained coy when asked if she was possibly going to welcome a baby girl.

‘You’ll have to wait and see,’ the songstress said, but later added that she has ‘always wanted a girl.’

And when asked if the name of her third child could also start with the letter ‘R,’ Rihanna replied, ‘I mean, of course. It’s tradition at this point.’

Professor John Gatsi chairs new Energy Commission Board

0

The Chairman of the reconstituted Board of the Energy Commission, Professor John Gartchie Gatsi, has said the board will act and take decisions that align with the government’s key priorities in the sector.

He said the board acknowledges the critical role of the energy sector in the socio-economic development of the country and would, therefore, serve and act to ensure that the steady progress the sector was making was sustained and improved upon.

Prof. Gatsi, an economist and Professor of Finance, gave the assurance during the inauguration of the board in Accra.

He, on behalf of the board, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the confidence reposed in them.

Board

Other members of the seven-member board include the acting Executive Secretary of the commission, Eunice A. Biritwum, the Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, and Prof. Dr Ernest Ofori Asamoah.

The rest are Danny Adzei Anang, Lorm Ama Abledu and Naser Mahama Toure.

Visionary leadership

Inaugurating the board, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, on behalf of the President, congratulated the members on their appointment, expressing confidence that they would bring their expertise and experience to bear on the work of the board, ultimately impacting the performance of the commission.

The Energy Minister underscored the critical role the commission played in the nation’s energy sector, thus the need for the board to provide visionary leadership.

“Ghana is at a pivotal stage; Private sector participation in the electricity distribution value chain, green transition agenda, gas as a transition fuel and implementation of the liquid fuel-to-gas swap, competitive procurement of new generation capacity and standardisation of PPAs, and attracting investment for resilient infrastructure.

The commission, Mr Jinapor said, is the principal advisor to the government on power issues, emphasising that their decisions would be pivotal in enhancing progress made so far, addressing the current challenges and capitalising on the opportunities within the power sector.

He, therefore, charged them to be “bold, innovative and transparent, while upholding good governance.”

The Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Eunice Biritwum, has underscored the need for Ghana to adopt a more sustainable cooling solution, warning that rising demand for air conditioning contributes to environmental degradation if not addressed.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Green Cooling Project on August 18, 2025, Biritwum called for a shift towards climate-friendly alternatives as the surest best to transition Ghana.

“As the demand for cooling increases, we face a crucial decision. We can either opt for a business as usual scenario and experience continued years of elevated emissions or we can opt for a better solution. Green cooling that aligns with our climate goals, energy efficiency targets and sustainable goals,” she stated.

“We at the Energy Commission wholeheartedly endorse the transition to highly energy efficient sludge air conditioners that utilise R290, which is a natural refrigerant with minimal global warming potential and which provide an efficient solution, delivering excellent performance and while significantly lowering emissions and energy consumption,” she said.

She added that “The Energy Commission is a critical partner in facilitating this transition. Through our minimum energy performance standards or MEPS and energy labelling regulations, we have established clear criteria to limit the entry of inefficient and environmentally damaging appliances into our market.”

This initiative forms part of a wider strategy to enhance energy efficiency in Ghana, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure a more sustainable energy future.

News In: 2024-25 GHALCA Top 4 venue changed

0

Ghana League Clubs Association Top 4 competition for 2024/25 football season has been moved to University of Ghana Sports Stadium as the venue for the top four tournament.

The games, which kick off on August 20, were initially scheduled to take place at the Baba Yara Stadium and then moved to Accra Sports Stadium.

However, according to reports in the local media suggests that the National Sports Authority has moved the venue to UG Stadium because Accra Sports Stadium is currently reserve for the FIFA World Cup qualifier game between Ghana and Mali.

Ghana will host Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8th 2025 as Ghana eager to qualify for the upcoming World Cup competition.

The Accra Sports Stadium, which is currently a ground for international assignments and set to host the Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers match against Mali on September 8, will not be available for the Top Four competition.

The competition involves last season’s GPL top finishers – Bibiani GoldStars, Heart of Lions, Asante Kotoko, and Hearts of Oak – as preparation ahead of the league resumption. The Ghana Premier League is set to begin on the weekend of September 12.

Hearts defeat Heart of Lions to clinch Gbese Mantse Homowo Cup

Two first-half goals within four minutes were all Accra Hearts of Oak needed to secure victory over Heart of Lions in the 2025 Gbese Mantse Homowo Peace Cup, played at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday.

Goals from Frank Duku in the 36th minute and Hamza Issah four minutes later capped an evening of fine soccer displays from both sides.

The match formed part of the activities lined up to commemorate this year’s Homowo celebration in the Ga Mashie area.

Having lost the last edition 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time at the same venue, Lions came into the game with revenge boldly written all over their play as they took the game to the Phobians.

New import Duku was in the right place to tap home a pass from defender Ali Mohammed, which beat goalkeeper Jayson Nettey for the opener.

Issah made it two after receiving a long pass from George Paaku, racing past the Lions’ backline before lifting it past the onrushing goalkeeper, Nettey.

Back from the break, the Phobians created more scoring opportunities, but the trio of Issah, Paaku, and Amankwaa Baafi, failed to live up to expectations.

Head coach of Hearts, Mas- Ud D Dramani, after the game expressed delight at the display of his team, noting that it is a team in transition and needs patience to get to its destination.

“It’s good to win, and it’s good to stay very competitive. We will keep a consistent approach to our games and then try to stay very sustainable,” he revealed.

“There is a clear standard, which is working harder in order to reach the desired levels, and I expect more from my boys and even myself in achieving just that,” he added.

The two sides will face each other again tomorrow evening in the Ghana League Club’s Association (GHALCA) Top 4 competition before Hearts face Bibiani Gold Stars on Friday and then Asante Kotoko on Sunday.

Hearts of Oak will also take on city rivals, Accra Great Olympics, in the Democracy Cup on August 29.

EPA Deputy CEO backs Dr Ayensu-Danquah as GTEC questions ‘Prof’ claim – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Prof. Michael Ayamga-Adongo, has come to the defence of Deputy Health Minister Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, amid scrutiny by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) over her professorial title.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, August 19, he argued that the controversy stems from differences between foreign academic systems and Ghana’s framework, urging GTEC to focus on genuine cases of abuse rather than officials whose titles were legitimately conferred abroad.

“I don’t think the Deputy Minister wants to beat the system. It is just that she comes from a system that described her as a professor, and she is bringing it here. What is not helping her case is trying to project it as if it is equivalent to what happens here. Was she a professor in the United States? Yes. Can she hold herself as a professor, maybe outside? Yes, but not in the university here. These are the intricacies of the issue.

“I think that, as much as I appreciate GTEC for policing the system, they should go after those abusing it and not people who have come from a system that described her as a professor,” he added.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has cautioned Dr. Ayensu-Danquah against presenting herself as a professor. In a letter to the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, the Commission requested that she provide documentary proof of her professorial appointment by August 11, 2025.

Dr. Ayensu-Danquah’s legal team, led by David K. Ametefe, responded, insisting that she was appointed an Assistant Professor of Surgery by the University of Utah in the United States. They argued that GTEC had no authority to demand evidence of appointments made outside Ghana.

However, GTEC maintained that the documents submitted revealed inconsistencies. A letter from the University of Utah, signed by Prof. W. Bradford Rockwell, Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Surgery, confirmed that Dr. Ayensu-Danquah had been appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, not an Assistant Professor as claimed by her solicitors.

The Commission stressed that omitting the term “Adjunct” was misleading. It explained that the role of Adjunct Assistant Professor is a non-tenure track position which, under Ghana’s academic framework, equates roughly to a part-time lecturer, not a senior lecturer or a professor.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah’s lawyers have strongly criticised GTEC’s correspondence and given it a 14-day ultimatum to provide a basis for questioning her Professorship.

Segbefia described the festival as a celebration of Ghana’s history and identity Segbefia described the festival as a celebration of Ghana’s history and identity

The 2025 Agotime Kente Festival was marked by a resounding call to preserve cultural heritage and harness it for national development, as the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia, extolled the global significance of kente and pledged government’s continued investment in infrastructure, tourism, and regional growth.

Addressing the grand durbar at Agotime-Kpetoe, where he served as Special Guest of Honour, Segbefia described the festival as a celebration of Ghana’s history, identity, and cultural influence.

He noted that kente, long before the adoption of the national flag, was a symbol of identity and pride during the independence movement and has since gained global recognition across the African diaspora and fashion industry.

“Kente weaves history and politics into a material that is both local and global,” he said, commending the people of Agotime for curating a festival that promotes both local heritage and Ghana’s broader cultural footprint.

Linking culture to national development, Segbefia highlighted government initiatives to boost tourism and infrastructure.

He pointed to the inauguration of the Ghana Tourism Authority Governing Board by the Minister of Tourism, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, as part of a broader strategy to position Ghana as a competitive destination.

He underscored the role of infrastructure in driving growth, stressing that safe transport, affordable food, and reliable healthcare are essential to unlocking Ghana’s tourism potential.

He reaffirmed government’s “Big Push Agenda,” a $2 billion annual investment over five years in education, health, and transport infrastructure, saying: “A tourist is more likely to visit when they know they can move around safely and access reliable services.”

Assuring the people of the Volta Region of government’s commitment, he cited ongoing and planned projects including the Eastern Corridor Road, Blekusu Sea Defence Project, Ho-Denu Road, and expanded agricultural investments.

He also announced that Agotime will be connected to the Adidome Water Project, in response to concerns raised by Paramount Chief Nene Nuer Keteku.

On healthcare, Segbefia outlined plans to position Ghana as a medical tourism hub, with the Ho Teaching Hospital expected to play a leading role under a new governing board tasked with modernizing its operations.

Concluding, he urged Ghanaians to preserve and celebrate cultural traditions. “Let us be curious about their origins, preserve them, and celebrate our cultural output,” he said.

Segbefia was later enstooled as a Development Chief of Agotime. Other speakers called for unity, patriotism, humility in service, and accelerated development for the Volta Region.

Food and beverage, ICT dominate Ghana Stock Exchange trading in July

The food and beverage as well as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sectors accounted for nearly three-quarters of trading value on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) in the first seven months of 2025, with the former’s performance corresponding with increasing demand as the economy continues to recover from effects of the recent slowdown.

According to GSE’s July 2025 Fund Managers Report, the food and beverage sector led all categories with transactions worth GH¢1.29billion, representing 48.45 percent of total market value traded.

This was supported by high volumes of shares exchanged – 251.2 million or 49.34 percent of total volume – driven largely by the performance of listed breweries, dairy companies and agricultural processors.

ECG overhaul, COCOBOD restructuring, among top financial sector reforms – WB report

The segment’s star performer has been Benso Oil, which gained 35.6 percent in its share price between beginning of the year and end-July.

This follows a one-year gain of 48.6 percent on the back of global palm oil prices which have risen sharply over the past year, peaking at about US$1,067 per tonne in February but dipping to US$934 in June and rebounding to US$1,303 in July.

Analysts have pointed to tight supply from Malaysia and Indonesia, weather disruptions and higher biodiesel demand under Indonesia’s B40 mandate, but expect prices to remain elevated through 2025.

Fan Milk, Guinness Ghana and Unilever saw YtD share price appreciations of 16.8 percent, 10 percent and 5.1 percent respectively. The Cocoa Processing Company and Samba Foods saw no price movements.

ICT stocks followed with GH¢666.62million traded, equivalent to 25.03 percent of value and 209.2 million shares or 41.09 percent of total market volume. The segment’s activity has been led solely by Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana), which has benefitted from strong earnings and investor appetite for high-dividend telecoms equities.

MTN recorded a post-tax profit of GH¢5billion in 2024 and is on course to surpass that figure with GH¢3.6billion already reached in June 2025.

Subsequently, MTN has declared an interim dividend of GH¢0.08 per share, an increase from GH¢0.065 per share in the same period last year.

This dividend is scheduled for payment on September 11, 2025 to shareholders on the register as of August 22, 2025.

Exchange traded funds (ETFs), dominated by the NewGold ETF, were the third-largest category – recording GH¢540.08million in trades. While accounting for 20.28 percent of value traded, ETFs saw only 1.28 million units change hands — 0.25 percent of volume.

Financial sector equities ranked fourth, with trades totalling GH¢123.18million, representing 4.62 percent of value and 40.03 million shares or 7.86 percent of volume.

The distribution and insurance sectors were comparatively small contributors, recording GH¢31.74million (1.19 percent) and GH¢7.06million (0.27 percent) respectively.

Manufacturing shares accounted for just 0.11 percent of total value at GH¢2.99million, while agriculture – excluding the dominant plantation stocks listed under food and beverage – posted GH¢940,492, equivalent to 0.04 percent. Mining shares, despite Ghana’s role as a leading gold producer, made up only 0.02 percent of market value traded.

Two sectors, education and advertisement & production, saw negligible activity, with trades valued at GH¢1,000 and GH¢18 respectively.

In total, GSE recorded GH¢2.66billion in value traded and 509.13 million shares exchanged between January and July.

Analysts say the concentration of market activity in a handful of sectors reinforces the domestic equity market’s structural composition, where a few large-cap continue to drive the majority of liquidity.

GSE’s composite index rose 43.03 percent in the year to July, the highest performance among tracked African exchanges.

The financial stock index gained 43.95 percent over the same period. Market capitalisation increased to GH¢146.12billion – up 31.22 percent since start of the year, with domestic capitalisation rising 42.4 percent to GH¢88.12billion.

At the middle of August, the GSE-CI has surpassed 50 percent (51.62 percent) with overall market capitalisation at GH¢151.14billion.

Shea employers applaud new producer price

0

The Ghana Shea Employers Association (GSEA) commends government for its decisive policy actions to strengthen and reposition the country’s shea industry.

The association welcomes the introduction of a regulated minimum producer price of GH¢9.01 per kilogram of shea nuts by the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA), the planned ban on the export of raw shea nuts by next year, and the upcoming 2nd World Shea Expo scheduled for September 2–4, 2025 in Tamale.

With the afore-mentioned developments, the GSEA applauds government interventions in the shea sector and urges access to inclusive financing to sustain sectoral gains.

According to GSEA, the interventions are timely and strategic, aimed at promoting value addition, protecting the interests of producers and catalysing domestic industrialisation within the sector.

The surprising twist in Ghana’s’ latest treasury bills auction

They provide a strong policy foundation for strengthening domestic processing capacity, and positioning Ghana as a global leader in high-value shea exports.

However, the association emphasised that access to affordable and flexible financing remains a persistent bottleneck for enterprises and cooperatives operating across the shea value chain.

“Many local businesses continue to face structural barriers such as high interest rates, collateral demands, limited working capital for procurement and insufficient investment financing for processing equipment, certification and market expansion,” the association noted.

These challenges, according to the association, do not only undermine the viability of promising businesses but also threaten the effective implementation of recent government interventions.

Indeed, without tailored financial support, shea value chain stakeholders have indicated that the sector’s capacity to respond to the minimum pricing regulations, capitalise on export opportunities and meet growing global demand for the commodity will be severely constrained.

GSEA maintains that a deliberate effort to facilitate access to credit through the various Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs), especially for small and medium-sized enterprises and cooperatives, will go a long way to sustain enterprise operations, unlock growth potential and support employment generation, particularly for women and youth across the country.

“It is in this light that GSEA respectfully calls on government and its partners to consider the unique financing needs of actors in the shea sector under the Guarantee Scheme supported by the Development Bank Ghana (DBG).”

Liverpool great Steve McManaman has lavished praise on Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo following his standout display in the Premier League opener at Anfield.

Bournemouth faced Liverpool in their first game of the season on Friday August 15, 2025 night, with the Reds racing into a 2-0 lead through Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo before halftime.

Semenyo, however, brought the visitors back into contention with two well-taken goals in the 64th and 76th minutes. Despite his heroics, Liverpool regained control, sealing a 4-2 victory courtesy of Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah.

Reflecting on the performance, McManaman admitted he was impressed by the 25-year-old’s quality and hinted at regret that Liverpool did not sign him.

“Antoine Semenyo ran 50 yards to score that goal after he signed a long-term contract,” he said on Premier League Production.

“He is strong and built for the Premier League, and anytime he has the ball, he looks dangerous going forward and for me, he should be playing for clubs like Liverpool.”

McManaman further revealed that Liverpool had considered Semenyo during the summer transfer window before Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal ended those discussions.

“Throughout this summer, he was linked to Liverpool until Mohamed Salah extended his contract,” he added.

Semenyo will look to build on his impressive start when Bournemouth host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, August 23.
