I inherited over $200 million debt – DVLA boss reveals financial crisis
Julius Neequaye Kotey is the CEO of DVLA
The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has disclosed that he inherited a staggering financial deficit upon assuming office.
He said the debts totaled over $200 million in foreign currency and GH¢300 million in local currency.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on August 19, 2025, Kotey described the financial state of the Authority as dire, citing mismanagement and legacy liabilities from the previous administration.
“I inherited debt, which I made the public aware of. In our dollar account, we were owing close to $200 million. In our cedi account, we were owing about GH¢300 million,” Kotey stated.
Cedi weakens to GH¢10.82 per US dollar
Despite these challenges, Kotey noted that there has been significant progress made under his leadership.
He pointed to a series of structural reforms, including enhanced revenue collection systems, digitisation of services, and tighter financial controls.
These efforts, he said, have led to a 57% increase in revenue in the first quarter of 2025 alone.
“I don’t want to blow my horns, but I have been able to make a lot of changes. In the 2025 first quarter, I moved revenue up by 57%,” he said.

Management of Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale has disclosed that the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) has set a bail condition of ten million Ghana cedis (GH¢ 10 million) with two sureties for the musician, who was detained on August 20, 2025.
The musician was held on August 20, 2025, when he voluntarily availed himself to EOCO’s offices with his lawyer, Cephas Biyu.
EOCO detains Shatta Wale over Lamborghini tax probe
His detention, per reports, is connected to the ongoing questions about the tax obligations of his yellow Lamborghini Urus, money laundering claims and so on.
In a video update, Shatta Wale’s media manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah popularly known as Sammy Flex, explained that the legal and management teams are currently working to secure his release.
You sell my beats, erase my credit, then buy luxury cars – MOG Beatz blasts Shatta Wale
“Before they can continue with the case (EOCO), they want to give him bail. A bail condition of ten million Ghana cedis (GH¢10 million) with two sureties has been placed, and I can promise you that management and legal officers of the dancehall king are working feverishly on this, and hopefully, we should work this out,” Sammy Flex said.
Shatta Wale’s current detention follows an earlier move in August when EOCO, working alongside the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), seized the yellow Lamborghini Urus.
Authorities alleged the car was stolen and linked to the proceeds to a serious international fraud scheme.
Meanwhile, Shatta Wale’s management has assured his fans, known as the “SM Family,” that the artiste is cooperating fully with investigators.
Sammy Flex also urged fans to remain calm and avoid speculation, noting that the legal team is in discussions with authorities to resolve the matter.

Akufo-Addo handed over a presidential jet that was airworthy and serviceable – Dominic Nitiwul
Dominic Nitiwul was former President Akufo-Addo’s Minister of Defence
Former Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has insisted that the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government handed over an airworthy presidential jet to the John Dramani Mahama government.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on August 19, 2025, the former defence minister indicated that the presidential jet, Dassault Falcon 900, had a corroded tank but it was repaired before he (Dominic Nitiwul) left office.
Ghana’s presidential jet stuck in France amid major faults, corrosion discovered – Report
He said that the then-President Akufo-Addo used the jet and handed it over to President Mahama in a very good state.
“It came back with everything anew after they (manufacturers) worked on it. The servicing was done by the manufacturers; they worked on it and said everything was okay. So, there was no problem with it.
“So, the former president started using it in April 2024. He used it until the time he handed over. That is why, I said that we have given out a jet that is airworthy, serviceable and can fly,” he said.
Nitiwul added that the issue of a faulty tank only returned after the jet was left idle for about a year.
“After using it for one more year, it was found out that the corroded part was still giving the jet problems. So, the Air Force recommended to the new government to send it back to France for further servicing,” he said.
NPP set traps to harm President Mahama by pouring acid in presidential jet – Owusu Banahene alleges
The former defence minister went on to caution against the politicisation of the issue of presidents’ use of private jets for their travels.
“What we should not be doing is politicking. Even though the former minister is gone, I don’t really want to criticise him, but it was wrong for him to come and start talking about an expensive jet. What is the meaning of expensive jet?… Has he even told Ghanaians the cost? Or is he relying on what Okudzeto said? I think that’s terribly wrong,” he said.

Award-winning Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale is in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after his detention as part of an investigation into the tax obligations of his yellow Lamborghini Urus on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
A statement issued by the SM Boss’s management stated that he had voluntarily presented himself to EOCO officials along with his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo, to assist with the ongoing investigations.
On Thursday, 21 August 2025, the Public Relations Manager for Shatta Wale, Sammy Flex, arrived at the EOCO office to begin the process of securing his GH₵10 million bail, with two sureties being demanded for the artiste’s release.
Fans campaign for Shatta Wale’s release
Following Shatta Wale’s detention, a few diehard fans gathered in front of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra to campaign for the dancehall musician’s release from custody.
In a video, the fans were seen holding placards in a show of solidarity for the SM boss amid his ongoing legal woes.
In an interview, one of the fans, whose name is unknown, shared that he had skipped work to troop to the EOCO headquarters with his colleagues to campaign for his release due to the love he has for him and his craft.
He also spoke about Shatta Wale’s impact on his life as he recounted how the musician’s songs helped him cope with his mother’s demise.
The fan noted that he had not been paid to stage the protest and expressed optimism that the charges against the SM boss would be dropped.
He said:
“I came here early in the morning. I was supposed to go to work, but I am here to support Shatta Wale because I like him. It is not because of anything else. If it wasn’t for Shatta Wale, I would have been depressed after my mother’s death. He hasn’t given me any money. His songs have helped me.”
The videos of Shatta Wale’s fans campaigning for his release outside EOCO’s office are below:
Why has EOCO detained Shatta Wale?
According to Shatta Wale’s team’s press release, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has detained the musician in connection with tax-related issues concerning the purchase of his yellow Lamborghini Urus.
Major media outlets have also reported that the dancehall musician had been detained over alleged money laundering, tax evasion, tax fraud, and possession of proceeds of crime.
Shatta Wale’s detention comes weeks after EOCO announced the seizure of his yellow Lamborghini Urus, which he purchased in 2024.
In a press release, the agency noted that they carried out a raid at the SM boss’s Trasacco Valley residence and retrieved the vehicle after a request from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Justice.
The security agencies had linked Shatta Wale’s car to a Ghanaian man named Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving an 86-month (seven years) jail term in the US over some financial crimes.
EOCO noted that the On God hitmaker and a former National Signal Bureau official were persons of interest and would be invited to assist with their ongoing investigations.
Amid the allegations, Shatta Wale has maintained his innocence in the matter and has denied having any ties with Nana Kwabena Amuah.
Sammy Flex secretly filmed at EOCO’s headquarters
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Sammy Flex was secretly filmed at the EOCO headquarters after rumours emerged that Shatta Wale had been arrested.
In a video, the PRO for the SM boss had a concerned look on his face as he made phone calls amid the confusion online.
The footage of Sammy Flex at the headquarters of EOCO triggered mixed reactions from Ghanaians on social media.

Ghana’s Godwin Asediba wins the 2025 BBC Komla Dumor Award – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana
Ghanaian journalist Godwin Asediba has won the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award.
The investigative reporter, filmmaker and news anchor, who is the 10th recipient of the accolade, works with TV3 and 3FM in Ghana. His stories have also appeared on several international broadcasters.
The 29-year-old often focuses on human-interest stories aiming to expose injustice and amplify the voices of marginalised communities.
The award, now a decade old, was created to honour Dumor, a Ghanaian journalist and presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.
He had worked tirelessly to bring a more nuanced narrative of Africa to the world, representing a confident, savvy and entrepreneurial side.
“Komla’s legacy reminds us that African stories deserve to be told with depth, dignity and a fearless commitment to truth,” Asediba said.
Winning the award was not just a “personal milestone” for the Ghanaian but also “a call to carry forward the spirit of journalism that informs, inspires and transforms”.
The award judges said they were impressed by Asediba’s investigative work and his unwavering belief in journalistic integrity.
One story that he was particularly proud of was his investigation into one of Ghana’s largest mortuaries that had been neglected, creating a public health risk.
Asediba is now set to travel to London where he will spend three months working with BBC News teams across television, radio and online.
He will also receive training and be mentored by leading BBC journalists.
Komla Dumor
“Over the past decade, the Komla Dumor Award has helped nurture some of Africa’s most talented journalists. It’s been a privilege to watch them grow and make a lasting impact, both at the BBC and beyond,” the BBC’s regional director for Africa Juliet Njeri said.
“This 10th anniversary stands as a powerful testament to Komla Dumor’s enduring legacy: his passion for bold, authentic storytelling and championing African voices lives on.”
As part of the placement, Asediba will travel to a country in Africa to report on a story that will be broadcast to the BBC’s global audiences.
Previous award recipients are Rukia Bulle, Paa Kwesi Asare, Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya, Victoria Rubadiri, Solomon Serwanjja, Waihiga Mwaura, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira, the inaugural winner.
Last year, Bulle travelled to Senegal to report on the Baye Fall – a Muslim subgroup whose striking appearance makes them stand out.

BoG bans foreign currency cash payments without matching deposits to stabilize FX market
The Bank of Ghana has issued a firm directive to all banks to immediately stop foreign currency cash payments to large corporate clients unless these transactions are supported by actual foreign currency deposits.

Arsenal’s ruthless Eze coup shows intent – leaving Spurs stunned
Arteta knows this is the season he must land a major prize, and to do so he has been heavily backed by Arsenal’s hierarchy.
As well as Madueke, the Gunners have concluded moves to sign Spain’s outstanding midfielder Martin Zubimendi in a deal worth up to £60m and, at least 12 months too late, a recognised striker in Viktor Gyokeres, from Sporting for £64m.
In Eze, who had two years left on his Palace contract, Arsenal will get a versatile forward rich in natural talent who is a match-winner – as he proved when scoring the winner against Manchester City in May’s FA Cup final.
This was a follow-up to the spectacular right-foot finish that set Palace on their way to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Wembley in the semi-final. Eze also scored the Eagles’ opener when they beat Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage in the quarter-final.
Eze has demonstrated he has the temperament and talent for the big occasion when inspiring Palace to the first major trophy in their history.
Arsenal will hope he has plenty of those occasions ahead.
He is a scorer and creator who will add real threat to Arsenal’s front line, with 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last season.
Eze was a boyhood Arsenal fan and was part of the club’s academy until he was 13. He may have been initially keen on a move to Spurs, but once the Gunners showed their hand there was only one part of north London he was heading to.
He has achieved his goals the hard way, spending time at Fulham, Reading and Millwall before signing for Queens Park Rangers. He left Loftus Road for Palace in a £19.5m deal in August 2020.
Spurs believe they did all they could to conclude a deal – apart from actually concluding it – but it is a hammer blow to chairman Daniel Levy and manager Thomas Frank, who also thought they had a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White in the bag only for him to sign a new contract at Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal will revel in the local rivalry of snatching away one of Tottenham’s prime targets, but the wider context demonstrates the Gunners are deadly serious about ending a wait for success that now stretches back to 2020.
Eze has previously admitted to “crying for a week” when he was let go by Arsenal in 2011, but the gifted forward has now been given a golden opportunity to make up for lost time.
Japan eyes Ghana for big investments
More than 100 Japanese companies have expressed interest in investing in Ghana following a high-profile Presidential Investment Forum held in Yokohama, Japan.
Organised by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) on the sidelines of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), the forum served as a strategic platform to deepen economic ties between Ghana and Japan.
Held on the theme: “Ghana is Open for Business — Unleashing Investment Opportunities for Shared Prosperity”, it attracted Japanese investors and the business community, various Japanese development and international cooperation organisations and government officials, among others.
President John Dramani Mahama, in a keynote address at the Presidential Investment Forum yesterday, told the participants that Ghana remained the prime gateway for Japanese businesses seeking entry into the West African and broader African market.
“Ghana is a stable, democratic and business-friendly gateway to West Africa,” President Mahama said.
He pointed to the country’s strategic location, macroeconomic stability, and ongoing reforms designed to significantly improve the ease of doing business.
President Mahama reassured investors that Ghana’s economy was bouncing back, saying inflation, which spiked to a 22-year high of 54.1 per cent in December 2022 and almost 23 per cent in 2024, dropped to 13.7 per cent in June this year and 12.1 per cent last month, with expectations of single digits by the end of this year.
“For those of you who know the history of the Ghanaian cedi, it has been one of the most volatile currencies in Africa. I am happy to announce that this year, Ghana’s cedi has been the best-performing currency in the world,” the President told the investors.
That, President Mahama said, was proof of Ghana’s improving fundamentals and commitment to macroeconomic stability.
To facilitate Japanese investment, the President announced a suite of concrete commitments, including fast-track approvals for projects, readily available industrial sites, sovereign guarantees, and innovative blended financing frameworks.
“In the reviewed Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act, we’re removing those minimum capital investments.
This will enable any investor, however little money you have, $100,000, $50,000, to be able to come in and set up a business in Ghana,” the President stated.
Under the existing law, foreign investors are required to meet a minimum equity contribution, which must be transferred into an account domiciled in Ghana (Bank of Ghana) before setting up businesses, with higher thresholds for wholly foreign-owned enterprises and trading companies.
Local content key
President Mahama, however, made a pivotal call for reciprocity, urging Japanese investors to commit to local content and technology transfer agreements to build the capacity of Ghanaian workers and managers.
“My three requests are simple. Pilot with us, partner to scale, and invest in people,” President Mahama stressed.
Echoing the President’s assurances, the Chief Executive Officer of GIPC, Simon Madjie, in a detailed investment pitch, outlined the two central pillars of Ghana’s economic strategy: the 24 Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+) and the Big Push Agenda.
Big Push Agenda, 24H+
Mr Madjie explained that the 24H+ initiative was designed to extend business operations beyond traditional hours to boost productivity, create jobs and enhance market access.
He assured investors of accompanying financial incentives such as tax rebates, duty waivers and export bonuses.
Elaborating on the Big Push Agenda, Mr Madjie said it was a monumental $10 billion infrastructure plan aimed at closing the nation’s infrastructure deficit and enhancing competitiveness, with a sharp focus on transport, logistics, water systems, agriculture and energy.
The GIPC CEO also detailed a wide array of attractive incentives for investors, including corporate tax holidays for strategic sectors such as agro-processing and renewable energy, location-based tax reductions for businesses established outside Accra and Tema, and customs duty exemptions on machinery and equipment.
He also highlighted specific, ready-to-invest projects such as the Volta Economic Corridor, the Legon Pharmaceutical Innovation Park, and the Kumasi Machinery & Technology Park.
Key sectors identified for Japanese investment included automotive and electric vehicle assembly, agro-industrial parks and food processing, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, the digital economy, and tourism development.
After the presentation, many Japanese firms took turns to express interest in initiating feasibility studies and pilot projects in Ghana, signalling a renewed momentum in the Ghana-Japan economic cooperation.

TICAD-9 is being held in Yokohama from August 20-22, 2025.
The government of Japan has been leading this conference since 1993, co-hosted by the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the African Union Commission (AUC).
Past TICAD conferences have yielded many key outcomes for Africa, including better appreciation of Africa’s development challenges, stronger partnerships between African nations and the international community, and a greater focus on African ownership of development initiatives.
Unlike other such multilateral conferences, TICAD has brought about concrete actions that have translated into financial assistance, particularly in education, water supply, health, and infrastructural development.
The establishment of the African Union’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is known to be one of the concrete outcomes of TICAD.
The Japanese government is financing many development projects for Ghana, mostly on concessionary terms, cutting across road infrastructure, education, health and climate change and adaptation.
No apologies for protecting taxpayers’ money — Ablakwa
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has defended his long-running scrutiny of presidential travel expenses, insisting he owes “no one an apology” for safeguarding the public purse.
In a Facebook post, Ablakwa described his campaign against the use of luxury chartered jets during former President Akufo-Addo’s tenure as “a noble oversight” and “a legacy I will forever cherish.”

Movement for Change shuts down NPP comeback claims
Solomon Owusu speaks for the Movement for Change
An outspoken member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has fired back at the New Patriotic Party, saying members of the Movement who broke away from the NPP will not return despite the amnesty granted them.
He argued that if members of the Movement were “stomach politicians” who are interested in largess, they would have remained with NPP when it was the government in power without breaking away.
“If we believed in largess of power, we would never have left the NPP at the time it was in power. I left the party on September 25, 2023, when the party was in power,” he posited.
Speaking to Radio Gold about the amnesty granted by the NPP, he said, the NPP’s primary interest in granting a conditional amnesty is to lure members of the Movement back so that they (Movement members) will be used for all the baboon works.
His decision is premised on a statement released by the acting national chairman of the NPP, Danquah Smith Buttey, on Saturday, August 16, 2025, which granted amnesty with a condition to all suspended members of the party.
Over 5,000 Movement for Change Members defect to NPP ahead of 2024 polls
Affirming the stance of the Movement, he said, “We want to change the dynamics of our body politic that when we say yes, it’s yes and when we say no, it’s no,” indicating their preparedness not to return to the NPP.
Solomon Owusu’s criticism suggests that the NPP is trying to exploit the situation to its advantage rather than genuinely reconciling with Alan’s supporters.
He insisted that members of the Movement are committed to changing the political discourse by maintaining its focus and determination to transition the Movement into a prosperous political party that will contest the next general elections.
The context of this statement is rooted in Alan Kyerematen’s resignation from the NPP in September 2023, where he cited disagreements with the party’s leadership and questioned the party’s democratic principles.
Stalwarts of the NPP, including former communications director, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, Hopeson Adorye, Abubakar Boniface Siddique
among others who felt aggrieved, left the NPP to join Alan’s Movement for Change.

Samuel Atuobi Baah, popularly known as Sammy Flex, a member of Shatta Wale’s management team, has revealed that the Ghanaian dancehall artiste was not detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over a money laundering probe.

“Shatta Wale shouldn’t have tried to fight EOCO no matter what”-Archipalago
US-based Ghanaian musician and social media commentator Archipalago has reacted to the arrest of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, following ongoing investigations into alleged money laundering, possession of suspected criminal proceeds, tax fraud, and tax evasion.

BoG assures importers of steady supply of forex – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is stepping up efforts to clean up the financial sector and ensure a steady supply of foreign exchange to keep importers and exporters in business.
Sources close to the central bank told Citi Business News that commercial banks have been directed to suspend over-the-counter forex withdrawals in a bid to ease supply pressure.
The Central Bank’s move follows a high-level meeting between Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama and the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, amid mounting complaints of forex shortages at commercial banks—shortages that have driven many traders to the black market at crippling rates.
During the meeting, the Association flagged concerns over bank deductions on forex transactions and called for a review of the USD 10,000 withdrawal cap, which it described as a major obstacle for genuine importers.
In response, the Bank of Ghana revealed that a committee is currently reviewing the Foreign Exchange Act and related policies to fix challenges in the forex market.
The Association, while commending the central bank for stabilising the cedi and improving Ghana’s macroeconomic outlook, also appealed for further interventions to ease the burden on businesses.

Police complete intensive tactical training ahead of Akwatia by-election
The Ghana Police Service has announced that more than 5,000 officers will be deployed for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025.
Of this number, 600 officers recently completed a five-day intensive course at the High-Risk Operations Training Centre in the Eastern Region. The training covered rappelling, precision shooting, crowd control, handcuffing, vehicle checks, and human rights considerations.
The remaining personnel will receive instruction in public order management ahead of the polls.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, together with the Police Management Board, supervised the closing session of the training, which included a live simulation exercise.
During the drill, undercover officers acted as voters at a polling station before the scene was disrupted by armed men attempting to seize ballot boxes. Police countered with tactical formations, arrested the suspects, and transported them in a Black Maria vehicle. Drones were also deployed to demonstrate remote monitoring and rapid response.
The simulation further featured precision target shooting and rappelling demonstrations, where officers showcased their ability to neutralize threats with minimal risk to civilians.
Speaking after the exercise, the IGP assured the public that the police are fully prepared to safeguard the by-election.
“We want this to be remembered as one of the most peaceful elections in our history. If you come to vote peacefully, you will be welcome. But if you come to cause trouble, we are ready to stop it before it escalates,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the officers for their commitment and called on all stakeholders to respect electoral guidelines to ensure a smooth and credible process.
Plot To Steal UG Elections: Aowin NDC MP Accused of Intimidating Students To Fix His Son As SRC President

The Member of Parliament for Aowin, Oscar Ofori Larbi, is under intense campus and public bashing following disturbing allegations of direct interference in student politics at the University of Ghana.
Reports indicate that the MP stormed the Legon campus this week and is still hovering around in the company of unidentified national security operatives in what many describe as a “mafia-style plot” to impose his son, Richmond Ofori Larbi, as SRC President for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Eyewitness accounts from students suggest the presence of the MP and his team has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, sparking widespread anxiety ahead of Thursday’s critical run-off between Richmond and his rival, Evander Kofi Akrasi.
The University of Ghana authorities have, so far, remained conspicuously silent, fueling speculation that Mr. Larbi’s influence and alleged strong ties within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are shielding him from scrutiny.
“Why should an MP, elected to serve the people of Ghana, descend into the murky waters of student elections?
What business does an honorable Member of Parliament have intimidating young students just to fix his son?” one concerned student lamented in a WhatsApp group that has since gone viral on campus.

Tarnished Integrity
This is not the first time Mr. Oscar Ofori Larbi’s name has been dragged into controversy.
His reputation has long been stained by serious allegations of illegal mining (galamsey) operations within his constituency.
The Aowin Traditional Council has openly accused their MP of masterminding galamsey activities in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve. Chiefs allege that Mr. Larbi formed a private “galamsey squad” and employed armed thugs from Northern Ghana to operate under his authority shortly after the NDC returned to power in 2024.
“When Nana heard about the issue, we called Larbi, but he didn’t show up. Instead, his special assistant admitted that those destroying our forests were working under his authority,” said Nana Ntow, Chief of Nkwanta, recalling how the MP brushed aside calls to account for the environmental destruction.
Despite repeated summons from traditional leaders, the MP allegedly ignored their concerns and responded with arrogance when the matter was escalated to the NDC Regional Executives.
A Pattern of Abuse
Critics argue that Mr. Larbi’s alleged conduct—whether intimidating university students to hijack an election, or sponsoring illegal mining in his constituency—paints a damning portrait of an elected official who has abandoned his duty to be a role model and servant of the people.
Instead, his actions appear to follow a dangerous pattern of power abuse, political arrogance, and disregard for democratic principles.
As one student leader put it: “If an MP can intimidate us here on campus for the sake of his son, what else is he capable of in national politics? This is the kind of dishonorable leadership that is destroying Ghana.”
The situation at Legon remains tense as the SRC election run-off looms today, Thursday, August 21, 2025, with fears that the involvement of the Aowin MP could compromise the credibility of the process.
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on both the University authorities to call Hon. Larbi to order before the situation escalates into chaos.

Julius Debrah: The support system everybody needs
On August 6, 2025, Ghana was hit by a tragedy when eight of its compatriots perished in a ghastly helicopter crash in the Adansi area in the Ashanti Region. The unfortunate accident drowned the nation in sorrow as citizens home and abroad mourned the passing of the eight.
Since the day of the crash till they were interred on August 15 after a state funeral, the national discussion was about their demise, how their memories could be preserved and what could be done to avoid any such calamity in the future.
They were Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Defence Minister; Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology and MP for Tamale Central, and Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy Coordinator, National Security and a former Minister for Food and Agriculture.
Others were Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chair, National Democratic Congress and Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General, NADMO and former NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Obuasi East.
The rest were crew members; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, posthumously promoted to the rank of Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Amadu, now Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, now Flight Sergeant.
As the news of the accident spread like wildfire amidst speculations about who might have been onboard the Z9 helicopter which was travelling to Obuasi for an event aimed at ensuring responsible small scale mining, all eyes were on the seat of government, the Presidency, to speak to Ghanaians, confirm the crash and reveal the identities of the victims.
There steps up the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, in his usual calm disposition. Supported by the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and some ministers of state, Mr Debrah confirmed the news, revealed the identities of the victims, directed that all flags flew at half-mast and conveyed President John Dramani Mahama and the Government’s condolences to the bereaved families and the Ghanaian people.
After that fateful day, the Chief of Staff, as the head of President Mahama’s appointees, has provided leadership in arguably what has been the most difficult moment for the administration thus far.
Standing by President Mahama every step of the way until the remains of the victims were lowered into their final resting places, Mr Debrah ensured his former colleagues and servicemen received the honour they deserved.
From staying late in the night to receive the remains of the victims, the Chief of Staff led government delegations to the homes of some of the victims, and was also on hand to receive international mourners on behalf of President Mahama, who obviously was hard hit by the death of his appointees, party official and members of the Armed Forces of which he is the Commander in Chief. So devastated was the President that anytime he appeared in public, one could see how telling the death of the eight were on him.
Overwhelmed by sorrow and grief himself, Mr Debrah, alongside President Mahama, could not hold his tears as the President could not hold his when high government officials gathered at the Presidency Gardens, a day after the tragic incident, to lay flowers for the fallen heroes. His shoulder became the resting place for the devastated First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, who broke down when she visited the Garden to lay a flower in memory of the deceased.
As he said in his tribute to the victims at the Evening of Reflections and Memorials,…”it will take a long while to forget or heal these scars” but the country must move on and honour the memories of the victims by continuing with their legacies of dedication and commitment to the state.
In that moment of national tragedy, the Chief of Staff demonstrated steeze and absolute support for his boss, the President, as they gave his former colleagues who tragically lost their lives in the ghastly accident a befitting farewell for their sacrifices.
As Chief coordinator of the government, Mr Julius Debrah has brought sanity and candour into the administration and same was evident in the final respect the state had for his late subordinates. A right hand man of the President, Julius Debrah has demonstrated a personality personifying trust and support for the President – standing by him and in his stead when the President could not in his lowest moment.
No wonder he was President Mahama’s Chief of Staff in the final two years of the first John Mahama administration, stuck with him for their eight years in opposition, traversed the nook and cranny of the country during the campaigns and now back in office again as the Chief of Staff. Everybody, indeed, needs a Julius Debrah by his side like President has.

Fitch Warns Six Banks Could Collapse Without Rescue Deals
Global ratings agency Fitch has issued a stark warning about the future of Ghana’s banking industry, cautioning that six banks are unlikely to achieve capital compliance through internal measures alone.
According to Fitch, these banks face a looming crisis that could force them into seeking capital injections, mergers, or outright acquisitions by stronger and better-capitalised financial institutions.
US suspends most Zimbabwe visas, citing govt concerns – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana
The United States has stopped processing most visas in Zimbabwe until further notice, its embassy in the capital Harare, said on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, citing unspecified concerns with the government.
“We have paused routine visa services in Harare while we address concerns with the Government of Zimbabwe,” the embassy said in a post on X. It said the move was not a travel ban and that current visas would remain valid.
The government of the Southern African country did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
The pause took effect on August 7, according to a notice on the U.S. State Department’s website, which said it applied to all visa services with the exception of most diplomatic and official visas.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has restricted travel from a number of African countries, saying it is working to prevent visa overstaying and misuse.
Zimbabwe had a visa overstay rate of 10.57% in 2023, according to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security report.
Starting this week, the U.S. will require visa applicants from Zambia and Malawi to pay bonds of up to $15,000 for some visitor visas. The Trump administration has also paused visa processing in Niger.
Harare resident Angella Chirombo said her 18-year-old son had received a scholarship to do his bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University and had been waiting for a visa interview when the pause hit.
“He was supposed to be in school already. I paid for everything else and was waiting for the visa so I could buy tickets,” she told Reuters.
She said other parents were considering booking interviews at other U.S. embassies in Southern Africa, but that she wouldn’t be able to afford the travel.
“Now they are saying we can go to Zambia and Namibia. I don’t even have money right now, and I don’t know where to get this money. There are so many students who have been affected.”

Sophia Akuffo unveils weaknesses in SOE operations
Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo
Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has expressed concern over what she termed as the persistent underperformance of Ghana’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs),
According to her, the problem can be attributed to weak monitoring systems and ineffective enforcement of accountability measures.
Speaking at a roundtable discussion on “The Mining Regime in Ghana” organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Sophia Akuffo warned that the inefficiencies within SOEs continue to weigh heavily on the national economy.
“I do not want to hear about sitting on this or that. We have to move beyond that—focus on the policies and methodologies that have been mentioned, the management, and the monitoring,” citinewsroom.com quoted her as saying.
‘I became a Supreme Court judge under NDC’ – Justice Sophia Akuffo responds to critics
She stressed the need for policymakers to shift focus from rhetoric to concrete action by strengthening oversight frameworks and adopting robust policies to fully harness Ghana’s natural resources and the potential of state enterprises.
According to her, many state-owned enterprises have struggled or collapsed primarily because of mismanagement and the absence of strict enforcement mechanisms to hold leadership accountable.
“The state-owned enterprises seem to be folding up because they were not being properly managed. When we were doing monitoring, enforcement was not taking place,” she added.

Empress Gifty Mocks McBrown’s Hand Injury, Sparks Backlash From Afia Schwar and Others
Gospel musician Empress Gifty has found herself at the center of controversy after allegedly mocking actress and television host Nana Ama McBrown over her hand injury. The incident has sparked outrage across social media, drawing heated reactions from several celebrities, including outspoken media personality Afia Schwarzenegger.
McBrown, who has been open about her long-standing struggles with her injured hand following surgery, has often shared her journey of resilience and positivity with fans. However, Empress Gifty’s remarks—interpreted by many as insensitive—were seen as an attempt to ridicule the actress’s condition.
In a live video making rounds online, Gifty reportedly made gestures that fans believe were directed at McBrown’s injured hand, laughing in a manner that many considered disrespectful. Her actions quickly caught the attention of netizens, who accused her of body shaming and belittling someone who has gone through a difficult medical experience.
Afia Schwarzenegger, never one to hold back, swiftly jumped into the fray, calling out Empress Gifty for what she described as “disgraceful behavior.” According to Afia, mocking someone’s health challenge is unacceptable and sets a bad example, especially coming from a gospel musician. Other industry figures and social media users also chimed in, urging Gifty to apologize.
Supporters of McBrown have since rallied behind her, praising her for staying strong despite the online mockery. Many have described her as a woman of strength, highlighting how she continues to inspire with her career achievements despite her health struggles.
Meanwhile, Empress Gifty has remained silent amid the growing backlash. Her critics argue that silence may further damage her public image, while her supporters insist that her comments may have been misunderstood.
This heated exchange has once again drawn attention to the increasing trend of celebrity feuds spilling onto social media, with fans divided and debates running wild on who is right or wrong.
For now, all eyes remain on McBrown, who has yet to publicly address the mockery, and on Empress Gifty, who is under pressure to clear the air and possibly issue an apology.

Africa is the next frontier for investment – Mahama – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana
President John Dramani Mahama has called on African leaders to take greater responsibility in shaping the continent’s role in the global economy.
According to him, the current shifts in the world order demand bold and strategic action from Africa to position itself as a credible player in international trade and investment.
Speaking at the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, the president noted that the global trading system was under serious strain.
“We are holding the TICAD 9 against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world order. Multilateralism is on the retreat, and countries are increasingly acting unilaterally in their relationships with the rest of the world,” he said.
He expressed concern that the world’s largest economy, instead of driving global trade and investment, had become more inward-looking.
“The recent round of tariffs and retaliatory tariffs has sparked world trade and the global economy. The full effect of these trade wars will have a ripple effect on global growth and prosperity for years to come,” he added.
President Mahama stressed the need for a “coalition of the willing” to chart an alternative path for sustainable global growth. He pointed out that Africa, with its 1.4 billion people and expanding middle class, holds immense potential to emerge as a key player in the world economy, especially through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Africa is open for business, and it is the next frontier for trade and investment,” he said, emphasising that while partnerships such as TICAD remain vital, the ultimate responsibility lies with African leaders to create a conducive environment for trade and investment,” he added.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah inaugurates new SIGA Board
Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff at the Presidency, has on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, inaugurated a nine-member Board for the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA).
The new Board, chaired by a legal practitioner, Madam Nancy Dakwa Ampofo, will lead the organisation’s strategy and mandate to oversee and administer the State’s interests in Specified Entities.
Other members are: Mr Osei Opoku, Mr Anthony Selom Dzadra, Mr Kwadwo Brentuo Mpeani, Mr Peter Osei Asamoah, Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte (Director General), Mr Richard Kwame Siaw, Dr. Emefa Aku Ansah and Madam Vida Addae.
Mr Debrah, emphasising the role of SIGA, urged the new Board to consolidate SIGA’s gains, strengthen institutional reforms, and provide strategic leadership.
He emphasised the critical role of SIGA in ensuring accountability, transparency, and improved performance of Specified Entities.
Madam Ampofo, the Board Chair, expressed commitment to ensure SIGA’s work aligned with government priorities.
In June this year, Prof. Kpessa-Whyte, stated that entities which failed to adhere to performance contracts would be sanctioned.
The declaration, during a high-level meeting, was on the back of weak commitment to performance contracts by some State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Joint Ventures, and Other State Entities.
Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of SOEs and Joint Ventures had been briefed on the modalities of performance contracts and the consequences of non-compliance.
Key variables of the performance contracts include Efficiency and Productivity, Management Improvement, Project Implementation, Economic and Financial Positions.
Prof. Kpessa-Whyte noted that sanctions for non-compliance include dismissal, public naming and shaming of entity heads, and the dissolution of boards.
“We can publish the names of entities that have demonstrated a weak culture towards signing performance contracts or have signed performance contracts but are not enforcing them religiously or are not using them religiously to guide their operations,” he stated.
At the same meeting, it emerged that about 100 SOEs had complied with the President’s directive of providing audited accounts to SIGA.

NPP needs Alan supporters for baboon work – Movement for Change alleges
Solomon Owusu is a leading member of the Movement for Change
A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has alleged that the New Patriotic Party’s decision to grant amnesty to all suspended members was meant to swindle supporters of Alan Kyeremanteng back to the party.
According to him, the release of the NPP’s statement on Saturday, August 16, 2025, lends credence to his assertion that the whole idea was purely designed to get followers of the Movement for Change, a splinter group, back into their fold.
Solomon Owusu, who stated this in an interview with Radio Gold, indicated that despite the amnesty granted by the NPP, members of the Movement for Change will not go back to their mother party.
Movement for Change not a political party – Alan Kyerematen clarifies
Affirming the stance of the Movement, he said, “We want to change the dynamics of our body politic that when we say yes, it’s yes and when we say no, it’s no,” indicating their preparedness not to return to the NPP.
Solomon Owusu’s comments come in the wake of a recent statement released by the NPP indicating that the party has, in the name of fostering party unity, granted amnesty to all members who are on suspension.
On the NPP’s amnesty, he alleged that members of the Movement have sensed a sinister approach being used by the NPP to lure their (Movement’s) members back to the NPP to engage in primary work for the leadership of the NPP.
He asked, “Between supporters of Alan Kyeremanten and the NPP, who must give the other amnesty? We are supposed to be giving them amnesty to even be talking to us.”
According to him, they (members of the Movement) going back to the NPP will mean that they have fallen into traps set by the NPP.
“Now, this whole release is also to tell Mr Alan Kyeremanten and his supporters that we only need your presence to come and do the baboon jobs in the NPP,” He posited.
He expressed the hope that the Movement for Change will soon transition into a full-fledged political party that will contest the next general elections in 2028, with Alan Kyeremanten as its flagbearer.

Alhassan Suhuyini shares positive updates on Ofankor-Nsawam road
Suhuyini is confident about the completion scheduled of the Ofankor – Nsawam road
The Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has given an assurance that some significant improvement will be witnessed on the highly deteriorated 33.4-kilometre Ofankor-Pokuase-Nsawam stretch of the N6 before the end of this year.
His assurance follows significant payment of funds, the government is said to have made to the contractor who moved away from the site and abandoned construction due to alleged non-payment of funds by the previous government.
As a result of the current arrangements put in place by the government, he expressed the hope that project completion could be as scheduled, saying, “We are very confident that it will now be within schedule.”
Suhuyini made this known when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament to answer questions on the way forward on the poor state of the 33.4-kilometre Ofankor-Pokuase-Nsawam stretch.
Residents protest over stalled Ofankor-Nsawam road project
The deputy minister also used the occasion to render an apology to the public for the poor state of the 33.4-kilometre Ofankor-Pokuase-Nsawam stretch, which has become a significant problem for all stakeholders.
The public apology to the stakeholders on the current state of the road, he said, had the full blessing of the substantive minister, saying, “I have my minister’s permission to first of all apologise to all motorists on that stretch. It’s one of the hot potatoes that we inherited at the Ministry.”
Explaining what has led to the disturbing situation, which has triggered the anger of drivers, as well as residents and commuters on the road, he said, “By the time we got to the Ministry, the contractor, like many other contractors across the country, had already abandoned the site due to non-payment.”
He revealed that the contractor who abandoned the site due to non-payment, allowing the road to deteriorate, causing many commuters and every stakeholder pain and frustration, has finally moved back to the site to begin work after receiving payment from the government.
Commuters endure 15 hours in gridlock on Ofankor-Nsawam stretch
“Fortunately, as we speak, the contractor has received some payment and has now adequately mobilised back to the site. It is our hope that before the end of this year, some significant improvement will have been noticed on that road,” he explained.
The Ofankor-Nsawam road is a vital route that connects not just local communities such as Pokuase, Amasaman, Medie and Sarpeiman, but it also serves as a key pathway for international trade between Ghana and its landlocked countries.
The road is crucial for transporting goods from the Tema Port to countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
It is due to its importance that stakeholders, including commuters, drivers, and residents, have been pressuring the government to fix the vital but poorly maintained road.
Meanwhile, the deputy minister expressed the hope that the completion of the project may be as planned.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has directed the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly and the Department of Urban Roads to immediately remove all unauthorized billboards at the Flowerpot Interchange.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, the ministry expressed concern over the growing number of unapproved billboards, describing them as illegal and unconstitutional.
The statement revealed that the ministry had identified an unauthorized billboard at the interchange and cited a press release from the Students Loan Trust Fund, which disassociated itself from the billboard and warned against the misuse of its logo.

According to the Ministry, such installations violate the Ghana Standards Authority’s Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs (GS 847:2019), relevant sections of Act 540, and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).
As a result, the Ministry has instructed the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly to collaborate with the Department of Urban Roads to ensure the immediate removal of the billboard.
The ministry also urged all municipal and district assemblies to consult regional road agencies before issuing permits for advertisements along road corridors.
A portion of the statement read; “We wish to remind the public that such installations violate regulations set by the Ghana Standards Authority’s Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs (GS 847:2019), Section 5, as well as Sections 11 and 15 of Act 540, and Section 188 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).”
It continued: “Through this release, the Ministry calls upon the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly to work closely with the Department of Urban Roads for the immediate removal of the billboard. We also urge all assemblies to collaborate with the relevant regional road agencies before issuing permits for advertisements or notices along road corridors.”
The ministry further called on the Advertising Association of Ghana to strictly enforce its code of conduct on outdoor advertising structures, reaffirming its commitment to road safety and the protection of public infrastructure.
Twene Jonas Calls On National Security To Release Arrested NPP Bloggers And Focus On Crime In Bawku
Outspoken Ghanaian social commentator, Twene Jonas, has once again sparked public debate with his latest remarks directed at the country’s security agencies. In a strongly-worded statement, Jonas urged the National Security to release the New Patriotic Party (NPP) bloggers who were recently arrested and instead channel their energy into addressing the growing insecurity in Bawku.
According to him, the detention of the bloggers is a misplaced priority at a time when many communities, particularly Bawku in the Upper East Region, continue to grapple with violent conflicts and criminal activities. Jonas argued that the safety and protection of citizens should be the government’s foremost concern, rather than targeting individuals for expressing their views online.
“Tell National Security I said they should release the NPP bloggers and go get the criminals in Bawku,” Jonas stated emphatically, stressing that security agencies should focus on tackling the real threats confronting the nation.
His comments come amid heightened concerns about freedom of expression and the alleged suppression of voices in Ghana’s digital space. The arrest of political bloggers has attracted widespread attention, with civil society groups, activists, and sections of the public calling for their immediate release.
Meanwhile, the conflict in Bawku remains a pressing national security issue. Clashes in the area have led to loss of lives, displacement of residents, and disruption of economic activities. Critics believe the government and its security apparatus should intensify efforts to restore lasting peace there, rather than diverting resources to clamp down on online activities.
Twene Jonas, who has built a reputation for openly criticizing authorities on governance and accountability issues, reiterated that the fight against crime, violence, and insecurity should take precedence over politically motivated arrests.
As the debate continues, his comments add to the growing pressure on the government to balance national security concerns with the protection of democratic rights, particularly freedom of speech.

From sharp tailored suits to relaxed loungewear, co-ord sets provide a clean and cohesive look. During warmer months, many women opt for crop tops with skirts or shorts. In cooler seasons, long-sleeve tops paired with wide-leg trousers offer warmthelegance.
Another timeless combo is the crop top and pencil skirt. It’s a go-to look for blending modern flair with classic chic. The on. This set works beautifully for both business meetings and dinner dates, depending on how it’s styled.
Jumpsuits have also been reimagined into two-piece versions. These connected top-and-bottom outfits look like one piece but give the flexibility of separates. Whether wide-leg or slim-fit, they’re perfect for those who love looking effortlessly put-together.
Bold prints like florals, animal patterns, and geometric designs are also ruling the scene. They bring life and personality to any two-piece look. When paired as a matching set, the result is eye-catching and energetic—perfect for summer outings and weekend events.
Finally, the blazer and shorts set has emerged as a game-changer for professional yet relaxed styling. The tailored blazer keeps it polished, while the shorts add flair and comfort, making it ideal for work-to-play transitions.
Work smarter, not harder – How Ghanaian businesses are using workflow automation to boost efficiency
In today’s fast-paced business climate, the phrase “work smarter, not harder” has taken on new meaning—especially for forward-thinking organisations in Ghana. Far from being about cutting corners, smart working now means leveraging technology to streamline operations, improve service delivery, and enhance employee satisfaction. At the heart of this transformation is Workflow Automation (WFA)—a toolset that is helping Ghanaian businesses simplify their most complex and repetitive tasks, allowing teams to focus on value-driven activities that move the needle.
Why workflow automation matters for Ghanaian enterprises
From banks and telcos in Accra to logistics firms in Takoradi and startups in Kumasi, organisations are facing increasing demands from customers who expect speed, accuracy, and a human touch.
Workflow Automation allows businesses to:
- Automate repetitive tasks, freeing staff to handle more strategic work
- Provide quicker and more consistent customer experiences
- Access real-time data for better decision-making
- Reduce operational costs and employee burnout
Boosting team productivity across the board
Customer-facing teams in Ghana—particularly in call centres, customer support units, and field service—often spend a majority of their time performing repetitive tasks like checking account balances, logging complaints, or sending follow-up emails. These tasks, while necessary, can drain time and energy.
With Workflow Automation, such routine duties can be executed instantly and accurately. This allows agents and officers to focus on solving complex customer issues, engaging with empathy, and delivering high-value service. The result? Happier staff, reduced turnover, and better retention of skilled professionals—a growing concern across industries in Ghana.
Enhancing the customer journey with a human touch
Today’s customers—whether in Ghana or abroad—want more than quick service. They want a personal, seamless, and responsive experience. However, slow systems, long queues, and unresponsive bots can sour even the best intentions. Workflow Automation gives businesses the power to anticipate issues, reduce wait times, and automate low-level queries, while ensuring that real people are available to handle more sensitive or complex matters. “In Ghana, where customer relationships are deeply personal, Workflow Automation helps companies balance efficiency with that uniquely Ghanaian warmth,” says Ama Osei, a customer experience manager based in Accra.
Real-time insights for better decisions
In today’s data-driven world, businesses need more than just spreadsheets—they need insights they can act on now. Workflow Automation allows different departments to integrate their systems, giving leadership real-time visibility into operations, delays, and customer feedback. This enables faster, smarter decisions—whether you’re managing a hospital’s patient flow, running an FMCG distribution chain, or optimising an e-commerce platform.
A recent internal study by Babble, a European cloud services provider, found that 86percent of contact centre leaders believe personalisation is a key feature of modern AI and automation tools. Ghanaian businesses are no different. Whether using AI-driven chatbots or automated customer follow-ups, the goal is always the same: make customers feel seen, heard, and valued.
Time to embrace the future
As Ghana accelerates toward a digitally empowered economy, Workflow Automation is fast becoming a competitive advantage. Companies that automate wisely are not just saving time—they’re improving their resilience, scalability, and long-term profitability. From SMEs to large corporates, the call is clear: It’s time to stop doing things the hard way. Let your systems work for you.
