Suspected French spy arrested in alleged Mali coup plot

0

Security Minister Gen Daoud Aly Mohammedine accused foreign states of trying to destabilise Mali Security Minister Gen Daoud Aly Mohammedine accused foreign states of trying to destabilise Mali

Mali’s military rulers say they have arrested a French national on suspicion of spying for his country in an attempt to destabilise the African nation.

In a statement read on national television late on Thursday, the junta alleged that Yann Vezilier was working “on behalf of the French intelligence service”. Mr Vezilier is yet to comment on the accusation.

His picture was also broadcast, alongside those of a number of army generals arrested recently for allegedly planning to overthrow the military government.

“The conspiracy has been foiled with the arrests of those involved,” Mali’s Security Minister Gen Daoud Aly Mohammedine said in the televised address.

France, Mali’s former colonial ruler, is also yet to comment on the man’s arrest and allegations of destabilisation.

The West African nation has been gripped by a security crisis fuelled by an Islamist insurgency since 2012 – one of the reasons given for the military takeover but attacks by jihadist groups have continued and even increased.

Following days of speculation about the alleged coup plot, Gen Mohammedine confirmed that “fringe elements of the Malian armed security forces” had been detained for seeking to “destabilise the institutions of the republic”.

“These soldiers and civilians” were said to have obtained “the help of foreign states”, the minister said.

The French national acted “on behalf of the French intelligence service, which mobilised political leaders, civil society actors and military personnel” in Mali, the minister added.

He also confirmed the arrest of two army generals, including Gen Abass Dembele, the former governor of the Mopti region, who was recently dismissed from his position.

At least 55 soldiers have been arrested so far in connection with the alleged attempted coup, security sources told AFP.

Gen Mohammedine said a full investigation was under way to identify “possible accomplices” and that “the situation is completely under control”.

Political tension has been rising in recent weeks, which have seen the arrest of former Prime Ministers Moussa Mara and Choguel Maïga over accusations of harming the reputation of the state and embezzlement.

Mara, a recent outspoken critic of the military government, has been in detention since 1 August, while Maïga is facing judicial sanctions.

In May, the junta dissolved all political parties following rare anti-government protests, which Mara described as a severe blow to reconciliation efforts initiated by the military leaders last year.

Junta leader Gen Asimi Goïta, who seized power in both 2020 and 2021, had promised elections last year, but these have never been held.

In July, the transition period was extended by five years, clearing him to continue leading the country until at least 2030.

Alongside its neighbours Niger and Burkina Faso, it has enlisted the help of Russian allies to contain the jihadist attacks in the region after breaking ties with France – but there has been no significant improvements in security.

The wife of the late Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, one of the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, delivered a moving tribute during the interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15.

Married for only a month, the grieving widow recounted her final conversation with her husband on the morning of the incident.

“Mankyɛ, it has been days, and you have not called at 5 a.m. for us to pray,” she said tearfully. “On that Wednesday morning, I called you and told you I woke up feeling very sad, and I didn’t know why. I don’t know how long I will wait, but I will still wait.”

She expressed her faith and hope, declaring, “Shame on you, death, you have not won. Christ has, because Ernest died knowing Him as his Lord and Saviour. You will forever be my hero, forever in my thoughts, never to die.”

Man who incited violence against security personnel in viral video apologizes

0

A man captured in a viral video inciting illegal miners to attack security personnel has publicly apologized to the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service.

In the widely circulated footage, the suspect, believed to be involved in illegal mining activities, was heard urging fellow miners to “shoot, kill, or butcher any police officer or soldier” who showed up at their sites.

According to him, the outburst was made out of “anger and frustration” following a violent clash between police officers and miners at Manso-Bonteso in the Ashanti Region.

He explained that upon watching the video later, he realized his comments were uncalled for and deleted it immediately.

Unfortunately, it had already gone viral and become the center of public scrutiny.

He apologized for his actions in a bid to evade punishment.

His apology comes amid ongoing nationwide security operations aimed at curbing illegal mining, which has been blamed for the destruction of water bodies.

Minerals Commission holds orientation workshop for blue water guards

By Emmanuel Gamson

Takoradi, Aug. 15, GNA – The Minerals Commission has organised a career development orientation for blue water guards to enhance their skills and knowledge in their line of duty.

The two-day orientation, held in Takoradi, was attended by selected community heads of the guards from the Western and Western North regions where they were taken through the Mining Cadastre Administration System (MCAS) and its processing cycle, and navigating the Ghana Mining Repository among other topics.

This was to enable them to identify and verify licences of miners, and provide information to security agencies to cramp down on those mining without the necessary documentation.

Mr Emmanuel Anyimah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Minerals Commission in charge of Support Services, speaking at the opening of the training, said the orientation was part of the Commission’s strategies to equip the water guards with the requisite knowledge to understand their mandates to protect water bodies against illegal mining activities.

He said: “They are community vanguards and are not to engage in aggressive law enforcement actions but collaborate with the relevant security agencies to act on cases of illegal mining, so we are training them to understand the nature of their work.”

He stated that the orientation was to broaden their understanding on how to check the licences of those mining in their communities to identify those involved in proper small-scale mining activities or galamsey.

Mr Anyimah urged the participants to impart the knowledge acquired to their colleagues so they would collectively rid forests and water bodies of galamsey.

Colonel Dominic Buah, Director, National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), took the participants through the mandate of the Secretariat and said it was the central coordination point of all anti-galamsey activities.

He said the blue water guards were part of the value chain in the fight against illegal mining, and that they must execute their assigned duties with diligence, dedication and commitment.

Col Buah  asked them not to be influenced by any act of attempted bribery, but remained firm and resolute to help the Secretariat achieve its set objectives.

Mr James Abaake, a participant, speaking to the Ghana News Agency on the side-lines, expressed gratitude to the Minerals Commission for the training and said it would help enhance their knowledge in executing their mandates in ensuring water bodies were clean and safe for all.

Kyemba holding a Bible during his Kyemba holding a Bible during his

A football fan from Uganda, Kyemba David, has gone viral after publicly renouncing his lifelong allegiance to Manchester United before the 2025-26 Premier League season on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Clutching a Bible, he solemnly recited a vow, proclaiming his eternal devotion to Arsenal until his last breath.

In a video shared on social media, Kyemba peeled off his Manchester United jersey and replaced it with Arsenal’s, the red and white crest symbolising a faith reborn.

It’s a dramatic mirror to Arsenal’s ambitions: after three consecutive runner-up finishes, Mikel Arteta’s side, bolstered by summer signings like Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi, are more determined than ever to threaten for the title.

As the Premier League curtain rises, Kyemba’s theatrical allegiance switch becomes a poignant metaphor; Arsenal’s fanbase, like him, stands ready to see if this season can finally bring the trophy they want.

With the opening clash on the horizon, all eyes are on whether both the Gunners and Kyemba’s faith will stand firm on the grand stage.

The season’s opener will feature champions Liverpool against Bournemouth at Anfield, while the headline-grabber looms on Sunday, 17 August between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford.

South Africa row over army chief’s pro-Iran comments

South Africa's defence department called the general's comments unfortunate South Africa’s defence department called the general’s comments unfortunate

South Africa’s army chief has been criticised after he reportedly pledged military and political support to Iran during a recent visit to the country.

Members of South Africa’s governing coalition have accused General Rudzani Maphwanya of “reckless grandstanding”, while President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed he would meet the general to discuss his “ill-advised” trip.

The row comes as South Africa navigates tense relations with the US, which has taken exception to the country’s ties with Iran, among other issues.

The Democratic Alliance, part of South Africa government, called for Gen Maphwanya to be “court-martialled”.

It said his comments had gone “beyond military-to-military discussions and entered the realm of foreign policy”.

South Africa’s defence department labelled the general’s remarks “unfortunate” while Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the president didn’t know about the trip or sanction it.

“The visit was ill-advised and more so, the expectation is that the general should have been a lot more circumspect with the comments he makes,” Mr Magwenya told reporters during a briefing on Thursday.

Gen Maphwanya, who was in Iran solely for a military trip, has since returned home, Mr Magwenya added.

Ghana’s Economy Shows Resilience – World Bank Report

0

Robert Taliercio

Ghana’s economy is showing signs of resilience with a strong growth of 5.7% in 2024 and a continued growth of 5.3% in the first quarter of 2025 amid a challenging macroeconomic environment, a World Bank report has revealed.

World Bank Division Director for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Robert Taliercio, made this known during the launch of the 9th Update on Ghana’s economy titled, “Addressing  Labour Market Challenges and Opportunities in Ghana’s Economic Landscape” in Accra yesterday.

According to him, despite strong economic resilience, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth will moderate to 3.9% in 2025 due to the impact of fiscal adjustments on domestic demand, and persistent inflation higher than the single digit target.

The report which was published in June 2025 also stated that significant risk such as delays in completing external debt restructuring and challenges in fiscal consolidation among others could undermine Ghana’s macroeconomic stability and growth prospects.

“Ghana’s success will depend on maintaining reform momentum and steadfast implementation. Enriching fiscal discipline, strengthening public financial management and carefully managing inflation and exchange rate volatility will be key.

“Energy sector reform including private sector participation is urgent to improve management effectiveness and the collection of energy revenue,” parts of the report stated.

According to the report, Ghana’s working age population is projected to increase significantly over the next decade presenting a major opportunity for economic growth if the expanding labour force could be absorbed into productive employment.

It, however, mentioned that such economic growth could be achieved through structural reforms supported by a private-led growth.

An economist, who is also one of the lead authors of the report, Kwabena Gyan Kwakye said a key focus on employment should be on youth and their transition from school to work to   help provide the needed skills as well as strong employment opportunities essential for realising the demographic dividend for a modern economy.

“Job to job transitions are also crucial allowing workers to move into more productive and sustainable employment, whether through geographic or sectoral shifts or within the same firm” he added

The report also recommended infrastructure investments in irrigation, transportation, energy while removing structural constraints to help improve the environments.

“Job creation hinges on unlocking private investment in sectors with potential for scale and productivity gains. This involves increasing access to finance, supporting entrepreneurship and utilising risk management instruments that encourage investment in underserved regions,” it stated.

The World Bank Economic update report is an annual publication that provides an overview of the country’s recent macroeconomic development, 2024-2025 and prospects for the medium term.

‘Grief forever’: Family of Dr Murtala Mohammed pays emotional tribute

0

The family of the late Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has described his death in the August 6 military helicopter crash as a loss that will leave “grief forever” in their hearts.

At an interdenominational state funeral in Accra on Friday, August 15, his siblings said the Tamale Central MP’s passing had left them shattered, but their faith offered comfort.

“While we grieve, we pray. And while we pray, we immortalise his presence in our hearts… that’s how we manifest our love and loyalty to him,” the family’s tribute read. “Allah’s ways are not our ways. While we love him, Allah loves him more. So, he gave him a good demise, however, horrified we feel about it.”

The family said they took solace in the belief that Dr Murtala died “serving country and his people, fighting a jihad in the true sense of the word; so that tomorrow would be better.”

Dr Murtala was among eight people killed when a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter went down at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region while en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Community and Cooperative Mining Programme.

Other victims included Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, and three crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

‘A promising officer’

At the same ceremony, staff of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) paid tribute to Samuel Aboagye, one of the victims, describing him as a rising star within the organisation whose warmth and dedication left a deep impression.

“He made every person feel valued, seen, and appreciated,” a representative said. “Although his time with us was brief, his impact will be felt forever. His greatest strength was his humility; his infectious smile made him well approachable and unforgettable.”

Mr Aboagye, who had briefly served as Deputy Director-General in charge of protocol at NADMO, was remembered as a colleague who “worked alongside everyone, opened his door for all, and offered encouragement” in a way that inspired confidence and unity.

The August 6 crash is one of the deadliest military aviation accidents in Ghana in recent years and has sparked national mourning for the victims’ service and sacrifice.

It is difficult to put into words the weight of such loss – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has described the August 6 Sikaman helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives, as a tragedy that “forever casts its shadow over the heart of Ghana.”

Speaking at the state funeral in Accra, the President said the loss was not just a national tragedy but also a personal heartbreak, as the victims were trusted colleagues, advisors, and friends.

He paid glowing tribute to Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, NADMO Deputy Director General Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Armed Forces crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

“It is difficult to put into words the weight of such loss. The grief we feel is not only the sorrow of individuals but the collective mourning of a people. Ghana has lost leaders whose work touched every corner of our Republic — leaders whose service was not measured in days, but in their impact and the lives they touched.

“They did not seek recognition or applause; they were giving of themselves, without hesitation, for the good of Ghana. Their final act was one of service, and that is how they will be remembered,” Mahama said.

The President assured the nation that a full and transparent investigation into the crash would be conducted to prevent future tragedies, adding that the fallen heroes’ values of integrity, humility, and loyalty would remain a guiding light for Ghana.

15 hours of ‘hell’ on Ofankor-Nsawam road …Commuters, travellers, trucks stranded in massive gridlock

0

The Amasaman–Medie section of the Ofankor–Nsawam road was blocked for more than 15 hours from Thursday evening to late Friday, leaving thousands of commuters, long-distance travellers and heavy-duty trucks stranded in a massive gridlock.

Vehicles travelling between Accra and the Northern Region, as well as other Sahelian neighbouring countries, were caught in the standstill, unable to move for the entire period. Many passengers heading towards the Medie stretch were compelled to walk from Satellite or resort to commercial motorbikes (Okada) to reach their destinations.

Those unable to find alternative transport, particularly long-distance travellers and drivers, were forced to spend the night on the road.

The disruption occurred when two articulated trucks loaded with goods overturned and blocked the road at Satellite.

This incident created a backlog of traffic stretching to Amasaman on both sides. From about 5:00 p.m. on Thursday until late Friday, no vehicular movement was possible.

It was only at 10:00 a.m. on Friday that the road was cleared to allow traffic to flow.

However, even after the obstruction was removed, traffic moved at a snail’s pace due to the poor state of the road and the heavy congestion.

Large potholes have developed along the stretch, some turning into ‘gullies’, while pools of water have collected in certain sections, making travel difficult and dangerous.

This reporter, who resides at Gakorpe near Doboro, was also caught in the gridlock and had to spend the night on the road.

Some commercial minibuses (trotro) and smaller vehicles that got wind of the blockade earlier diverted through adjoining communities before rejoining the main road to either enter or exit Accra.

Several drivers who spoke to the Ghanaian Times expressed frustration at the situation and appealed to the government to release funds for the contractor to resume work on the road.

An articulated truck driver, Philip Mensah, transporting cement, lamented: “I have never slept on this section of the road before, but here I am. I have to deliver this consignment before the end of the day, and look , I am stuck in the middle of the road.”

A fuel tanker driver, Michael Ansah, expressed concern for his safety. “I am worried because the product I am carrying is flammable and can catch fire easily,” he said.

Another driver, Evans Appiah, who was transporting perishable goods, feared his consignment could go to waste.

“The products need refrigeration, and any delay will spoil them. The government must pay the contractor so work can continue,” he appealed.

A Taxi driver, Emmanuel Ofori also recounted how a routine trip turned into a nightmare.

“I was just dropping a customer at Medie, only to pass the night on the road.” he said.

Work on the 33.4-kilometre international road linking Ofankor to Nsawam, part of the Accra–Kumasi road (National Route 6), has stalled. The contractor, Maripoma Enterprise Limited, which is undertaking the $346.5 million project, has moved its equipment from the project site at Amasaman.

The project, which commenced in July 2022 and was initially expected to be completed in 2024, was granted an extension to May 2025. However, the contractor is no longer on site, and work has come to a halt.

When completed, the road is expected to ease traffic congestion on the Accra–Nsawam route, boost socio-economic activities along the corridor, and facilitate trade between Ghana and its Sahelian neighbours such as Burkina Faso, Mali and Nigeria.

In the meantime, commuters and drivers on the route continue to endure severe delays and hazardous driving conditions, with Thursday’s incident serving as yet another reminder of the urgent need for the completion of the project.

A member of the Movement for Change, Philip Longdon, has termed as unfortunate, utterances of NPP flagbearer aspirant, Bryan Acheampong, that he is the biggest spender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Pan African TV’s Good Morning Africa on August 15, 2025, he slammed Bryan Acheampong for touting himself as the biggest spender of the opposition NPP.

“When the party was struggling in its days of formation and people were bringing the last of their old cars to help move leaders up and down the country to campaign; can he put a value on that?

“Those people who trekked and went to spread the message in remote areas; can you put a value to that? Where was Bryan Acheampong?” he quizzed.

He described as unfortunate the stage the NPP has gotten to, where prominence appears to be given to the avid display of opulence over long service and sacrifice.

“It is most unfortunate that our politics is moving in a direction where substance is downplayed (sic) over opulence,” he decried.

I funded NPP Eastern Region candidates, executives with GH¢52 billion in 2024 – Bryan Acheampong

He condemned the remarks by the former minister, stressing that all around the world, financiers of political parties are silent over their contributions to avoid conflict of interest and other issues.

He warned that if such utterances are left unchecked it could cause massive confusion in the party; especially among grassroots members who break their back daily to campaign for the party.

Ghana is still grieving the sudden loss of eight national heroes who tragically died in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

As the country continues to mourn, rapper Sarkodie has released a refix of a song originally composed by the late Highlife legend A. B. Crentsil in the 1980s.

The new verse, taken from the original track titled ‘Moses,’ has sparked conversation among netizens, as Sarkodie used it to offer words of encouragement to Ghanaians during this difficult time.

In a post shared on X, which accompanied lyrics of the song, on August 10, 2025, Sarkodie noted, “Felt like giving some hope to someone who needs it.”

In the under three-minutes track, the musician began by encouraging those facing life’s struggles to remain patient and content with what they have, as others may be experiencing even more difficult situations.

Sarkodie, known for his creativity, added around the 25-second mark that people should not depend on others for their success, as human beings can easily let them down.

He further noted that no one knows an individual’s destiny, emphasising that God is the lifter of men.

He also urged people to pray for life rather than chase after money, adding that many wealthy individuals have passed away, leaving all their riches behind.

“Wo da so tease d33 odasani nii biaa nim wo daakye. S3 sika b3 to wonsamu aa menua 3nfa ho be baabiaa who hy3 ase nti.

“Nti ka wakoma no to wo yem, Nyame ne mr3 ne mr3 pa. Wo ko wo kotodwe nim aa 3misa sika, kas3 nyame me p3 nkwa,” he said.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have praised the musician for giving hope to them and lifting their spirit in times of grief.

Tottenham Hotspurs Winger, Mohammed Kudus has said that they have learnt a big lesson from their defeat in the UEFA Super Cup against French giants Paris Saint Germain.

Tottenham Hotspurs, despite taking a 2-0 lead in the game at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy with barely 10 minutes to end the game, they conceded two late goals to take the game to penalties.

The English side lost 4-3 on penalties thus missing out on a good opportunity to start the 2025/2025 football season with a major silverware.

Reacting to the defeat, Kudus Mohammed said this is a lesson for them to stay focus in a game till the blast of the whistle because “it is not over until it is over.”

“This is a big lesson to stay focused for the whole 90 minutes,” the Black Stars winger said.

Kudus Mohammed spent 79 minutes on the pitch before he was replaced in the game by French international Mathys Tel and was rated 7.0 after the game by Sofascore.

In northern Nigeria, US funding cuts bite for aid groups

0

Maiduguri, Nigeria – Sometimes, it feels to Zara Ali as though her daughter was born already sick in the womb.

On a recent weekday, the 30-year-old mother clutched the ill toddler in her lap as she sat outside a government hospital in Maiduguri, the capital of northeast Nigeria’s Borno State. The two had just finished yet another doctor’s appointment in hopes of curing the child.

Although cranky as any other sick two-year-old, it is Amina’s hair – brownish and seemingly bald in several spots – that’s a visible sign of the malnourishment doctors had previously diagnosed. Yet, despite months of treatment with a protein-heavy, ready-to-eat paste, Ali says progress has been slow, and her daughter might require more hospital visits.

“She gets sick, gets a little better, and then falls ill again,” she said, frustrated. Already, Ali and her family have had to move homes several times because of the Boko Haram conflict. They were displaced from Damboa town, about 89km (55 miles) away, and now live in Maiduguri as displaced persons.

Adding to her woes is the reduced access to care in recent months as several aid clinics she visits for free treatment have begun to scale back operations, or in some cases, completely shut their services. “Honestly, their interventions were really helpful, and we need them to come back and help our children,” Ali said.

Amina is only one of some five million children across northeast and northwest Nigeria suffering from malnourishment in what experts have called the region’s most severe food crisis in years. The troubled northeast region has, for a decade and a half, been in the throes of a conflict waged by the armed group Boko Haram, and prolonged insecurity has disrupted food supplies. In the northwest, bandit groups are causing similar upheavals, resulting in a hunger crisis that state governments are struggling to contain.

Compounding the problem this year are the massive, brutal funding cuts roiling aid organisations, which have often stepped in to help by providing food assistance to the 2.3 million displaced northeast Nigerians. Many of those organisations were dependent on funds from the United States, which, since February, has reduced contributions to aid programmes globally by about 75 percent.

The World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations food aid agency and the world’s largest provider of food assistance, was forced to shut down more than half of all its nutrition clinics across the northeast in August, Emmanuel Bigenimana, who leads northeast Nigeria operations, told Al Jazeera from the agency’s site in Maiduguri. Some 300,000 children are cut off from needed nutrition supplements, he said.

Already, in July, WFP doled out its last reserves of grains for displaced adults and families, Bigenimana added, standing by a row of half-empty tent warehouses. A few men removed grain sacks from the tents and loaded them onto trucks bound for neighbouring Chad, a country also caught in complex crises. For Nigeria, he said, which is in the lean season before harvest, there was no more food.

Northeast Nigeria should be a food basket for the country, due to its fertile, savannah vegetation suitable for cultivating nuts and grains. However, since the Boko Haram conflict broke out, the food supply has dwindled. Climate shocks in the increasingly arid region have added to the problems.

Boko Haram aims to control the territory and has been active since 2011. The group’s operations are mainly in Borno, neighbouring states in the northeast, and across the border in Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. It gained global notoriety in 2014 for the kidnapping of female students in Chibok. Internal fractures and Nigeria’s military response have reduced the group’s capacity in recent years, but it still controls some territory, and a breakaway faction is affiliated with ISIL (ISIS). More than 35,000 people have been killed in attacks by the group, and more than 2 million are displaced.

Before the insecurity, families in the region, particularly outside the urban metropolis of Maiduguri, survived on subsistence farming, tilling plots of land, and selling surplus harvest. These days, that is hardly an option. The military has hunkered down in garrisoned towns since 2019 to avoid troop losses. It is hard to find cultivating space amid the trenches and security barriers constructed in such places, security analyst Kabir Adamu of intelligence firm Beacon Consulting, told Al Jazeera. Those who venture outside the towns risk being targeted by armed fighters.

In rural areas not under army control, Boko Haram operates as a sort of government, exploiting villagers to generate money.

“The armed actors collect taxes from them to use land for farming,” Adamu said, adding that for rural farmers, those taxes often prove heavy on the pockets. In more unlucky scenarios, farmers have been killed if they were believed to be military informants. In January, 40 farmers were executed in the town of Baga. Fishermen have similarly been targeted.

The vicious cycle has repeated itself for years, and the compounding effect is the current food crisis, experts say.

Just 45 minutes from Maiduguri, in Konduga town, farmer Mustapha Modu, 55, tilled the earth in anticipation of rainfall on a cool weekday. He had just returned from a short journey to Maiduguri, braving the risky highways to buy seedlings in hopes of a good season.

Even as Modu planted, he worried that harvest might be impossible. There are widespread fears that Boko Haram fighters often lie in wait and then pounce on farmers to seize harvests. At one time, he said, his family of three wives and 17 children depended on handouts, but those hardly reached Konduga any more, so he had to do something.

“It’s been a long time since we saw them in our village,” Modu said of food aid distributors. “That’s why I managed to go and get some seedlings, even though the insurgents are still on our neck.”

The UN and its agencies were the focus of aid cuts from Washington in April, leading to the WFP receiving zero aid from the US this year, Bigenimana said. Like the US, other donors such as the European Union and the United Kingdom have also cut back on aid, instead diverting money to security as tensions remain high over Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The agency catered to some 1.3 million displaced people and others in hard-to-reach areas, fringe locations accessible only by helicopter. For children, the agency ran several nutrition clinics and supported government hospitals with ready-to-use food, a protein mixture made mostly of groundnut, which can rapidly stabilise a malnourished child.

Funding cuts caused the WFP to begin rationing supplies in recent months. In July, resources in Nigeria were completely emptied. At least $130m is required for the agency to speedily get back on track with its operations here, Bigenimana said. Extended lack of support, he said, could push more people into danger.

“People are attempting to go and get firewood to sell outside the secure points,” the official said. “Even when we delay distribution on normal days, people protest. So we are expecting that, and it could get violent.”

Multiple other NGOs across the region were also hit by the Trump aid cuts. They not only provided food aid or nutrition treatment, but also medical services, and crucial vaccines children need in the first years of life to guard against infectious diseases like measles.

Analysts like Adamu, however, criticise aid groups for what he said is their failure to create a system where people don’t rely on food aid. In Borno, the state government has, since 2021, gradually shut down camps for internally displaced people and resettled some in their communities. The aim, the government argues, is to reduce dependency and restore dignity. However, the move faces widespread backlash as aid agencies and rights organisations point out that some areas are still unsafe, and that displaced people simply move to other camps.

“They should have supported the government on security reforms for the state,” Adamu argued. That, he said, would have been a more sustainable way of empowering people and would have eased the food crisis.

For now, the food crisis looks set to continue, and children in particular appear to be bearing the brunt, especially as heavy rains arrive.

Muhammad Bashir Abdullahi, an officer with medical aid group Doctors without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, told Al Jazeera that more malnourished children are being admitted to the organisation’s nutrition facility in Maiduguri since early August. It is possible, he said, that the shuttered services in other organisations were contributing to the higher numbers.

“We used to admit 200 children weekly, but last week we admitted up to 400 children,” Abdullahi said. MSF, which is not dependent on US aid, has recorded more than 6,000 malnourished children in its Maiduguri nutrition centre since January. Typically, children receive the protein paste, or in acute cases, a special milk solution. Abdullahi said more children are likely to be admitted in the coming weeks.

Back at the government hospital where Ali was seeking treatment for her daughter, another woman stopped outside the clinic with her children, twin baby boys.

One of them was sick, the mother, 33-year-old Fatima Muhammad, complained, and is suffering from a swollen head. This is the third hospital she was visiting, as two other facilities managed by NGOs were overwhelmed. Unfortunately, her son had not been accepting the protein paste, a sign that medical experts say signals acute malnutrition.

“His brother is sitting and crawling already, but he still cannot sit,” Muhammad said, her face squeezed in a frown. She blamed herself for not eating enough during her pregnancy, although she hardly had a choice. “I think that’s what affected them. I just need help for my son, nothing more.”

CEO of Midas Touch Entertainment, Kwabena Opoku Oppong, has supported the inmates of the Kumasi Children’s Home with the supply of essential food items and a cash donation.

The intervention is to help alleviate the daily struggles faced by the over 100 children in the care home. The Kumasi Children’s Home, established in 1996, is home to more than 100 underprivileged children and orphans, providing diverse care and support.

The government-run residential facility provides vulnerable children with essentials such as food, healthcare, shelter, education, and emotional support, largely relying on the benevolence of the public.

The CEO of Midas Touch Entertainment and entrepreneur, Kwabena Opoku Oppong, donated essential items to the home in memory of his late mother, Georgina Opoku.

He said the gesture reflected the deeds of his late mother. “My late mother was a woman of kindness, and in her memory, we have come to support the Kumasi Children’s Home, something she would have done herself. She believed that every child deserves love and care.

“This is just the beginning, and I invite individuals and organisations to give these children the care and hope they deserve. They are our future leaders, and together we can make their future bright,” he said.

The Kumasi Children’s Home was presented with items such as rice, cooking oil, toiletries, bottled water, stationery, beverages, and cash.

The Home Manager of Kumasi Children’s Home, Mabel Pinamang Boamah, says the intervention is timely. “On behalf of the kids and the management, we say a big thank you to the Opoku family. These items are essential, and they have come at the right time. We hope that God replenishes your pocket,” she said.

Apart from the donation, Mr. Opoku Oppong, in the company of family and friends, fraternised with the underprivileged children, leaving them with smiles.

Friends and loved ones, including musicians, Gyakie, and Rufftown management, have assisted in a pep talk with the children.

“Our mother was a staunch Christian and a giver. We want to continue her legacy. She has love for kids and the needy, and advises us to give,” Sandra Opoku, daughter of the late Georgina Opoku said.

The intervention, planned and executed by GS Concierge Limited, was lauded as outstanding and heartwarming.

Web Design Disputes, And How SMEs Can Protect Their Digital Assets (3)

0

Why Digital Asset Control Matters

Losing control over digital assets can have profound repercussions for SMEs, extending far beyond mere inconvenience to impact core business operations and viability.

1. Financial Consequences

The most immediate and quantifiable impact of losing digital asset control is financial. Website downtime directly results in missed sales opportunities, a particularly critical issue for e-commerce businesses where every minute of inaccessibility translates to lost revenue. Even brief periods of downtime can incur substantial financial losses, with studies showing many small and medium-sized businesses facing costs ranging from $10,000 to $40,000 per hour, and for a notable 10% of SMBs, these costs can exceed $50,000 per hour, according to a study by Uptimia on the impact of website downtime on businesses.

Regaining control of a website after a “hostage” situation or rebuilding it from scratch can entail significant recovery costs, including expenses for data retrieval, new development, and legal fees. Furthermore, the need to repurchase software licenses, pay “exit fees” to obtain source code, or engage legal counsel all contribute to unexpected and often substantial increases in operational expenses. Beyond immediate losses, recurring downtime or an inability to update and maintain the website can lead to customer attrition as frustrated clients migrate to competitors, resulting in long-term revenue erosion and hindering the business’s overall growth trajectory.

The financial impact of digital asset disputes is not confined to the “hostage” event itself but rather stems from a cascading series of failures that originate from a lack of fundamental control. An initial lack of clear ownership, such as a designer retaining control over a domain or software licenses, might initially appear to be a minor issue. However, this quickly leads to an inability to independently update or maintain the website. Outdated websites then become susceptible to security breaches or experience unexpected downtime. These periods of downtime and security compromises directly cause both immediate and long-term financial losses. Therefore, proactive measures to secure digital assets are not merely a matter of good practice but a critical financial safeguard.

2. Reputational Damage

Beyond financial implications, losing digital asset control can severely damage an SME’s reputation. Frequent website downtime or inaccessibility erodes customer trust and loyalty, as consumers begin to question the brand’s reliability and operational competence. Customers are considerably less likely to return to a website that has previously failed them. An unavailable or poorly functioning website can lead visitors to form a negative perception, associating the online issues with poor overall business performance. A survey indicated that 68% of UK consumers would develop a negative impression of a brand if its website was inaccessible when they attempted to visit it. And here in Ghana, we are familiar with the “bad government website never working”

Dissatisfied customers are quick to disseminate their negative experiences across social media, online forums, and review platforms, thereby damaging the brand’s reputation and deterring potential customers. This is particularly detrimental for SMEs operating in competitive markets, where online reputation plays a pivotal role in attracting and retaining clients. While website downtime and a general lack of control negatively affect brand perception and customer trust for any business, the vulnerability is amplified for SMEs. These businesses often possess smaller customer bases and rely heavily on positive word-of-mouth and online reviews for growth and market penetration. Consequently, negative experiences, especially when amplified through social media, can disproportionately harm an SME’s reputation compared to larger enterprises that may possess more resilient brand equity or diversified marketing channels. For SMEs, reputational damage stemming from digital asset issues is not merely a setback; it can pose an existential threat, as their smaller scale makes them more susceptible to the amplified negative effects of a compromised online presence.

3. Operational Disruptions

The inability to control digital assets directly translates into significant operational disruptions. Without proper administrative access to the CMS, website source code, or essential software licenses, SMEs cannot perform critical tasks such as updating content, rectifying bugs, or applying vital security patches, leaving their website stagnant, vulnerable, and potentially non-compliant.

If the domain, hosting, or source code is held hostage, migrating the website to a new provider becomes an exceedingly complex, if not impossible, undertaking, often necessitating a complete rebuild of the digital presence. This not only incurs additional costs but also results in prolonged periods of inoperability. The inability to access or manage critical online infrastructure directly impacts daily business operations, affecting everything from customer service, if online forms or support portals are down, to sales and marketing activities, if the primary website is inaccessible.

A lack of control over core digital assets, including the domain, hosting, and underlying code, prevents routine updates, essential security patches, and effective content management. This inevitably leads to an outdated, insecure, or non-functional website. Such a compromised foundational platform directly undermines any digital marketing, SEO, or e-commerce strategy. Digital asset control is thus not solely about legal ownership; it is fundamentally about maintaining the operational integrity and strategic agility of the entire online business. Losing control over these assets can effectively cripple an SME’s digital transformation efforts and its competitive positioning in the marketplace.

My mentor, you showed me the way but left me lonely – Deputy Defence Minister mourns Omane Boamah

0

Deputy Minister of Defence, Brogya Genfi,

Tribute by Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi in honour of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah

You believed it is God who lifts women and men.

You believed it was God who orchestrated every moment—including the time I was assigned as your deputy.

You held me close, and in trust, offered me opportunities, and deliberately delegated responsibilities that gave me the vantage of a principal, even while I remained your subordinate—just so I could build experience and sharpen my skills.

Boss, it is so difficult to accept that you are no more. How does one make peace with the thought that his friend, brother, mentor, and role model is in a better place when there was no prior arrangement, no whisper of farewell—only a sudden departure, a sudden flight, and an aching void where your voice used to be?

Oh Boss, it is true that you lived fully—with cheer and cordiality toward all you encountered. You were excellent and unwavering in your commitment to our nation.

You poured yourself  wholly into your work, giving your best in every

season, and leaving a legacy that will outlive the span of your years. Though tragedy has cut your journey short, you spent it entirely in the line of duty—faithful to the very end.

Am I to accept that your presence and wise counsel can be traded for comfort in the greatness of your legacy, as tragedy has compelled me to? Tell me.

This tragedy has tested me. Yet I am left with gratitude for having shared a piece of the gift of your life. I am left with hope in the promise of the resurrection.

You gave your life to Ghana, and I strongly believe Ghana will never forget. Your legacy is etched in the fabric of our nation’s defence, and in the hearts of those you mentored. I will honour you not only in grief but also in duty.

You showed me the way but left me lonely on the way at a time I least expected.

Rest well, Mentor. Your mission is complete. Boss, Kafra! Due ne Amanhenu! Amen.

Minister threatens sanctions against MMDAs over delay in returning DRIP Machinery

0

By Solomon Gumah

Tamale, Aug. 15, GNA – Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, has threatened to sanction Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region that fail to promptly return District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) equipment after use.

He said the prolonged retention of the machinery by some Assemblies was depriving others of access and frustrating the programme’s goal of improving road infrastructure across the region.

Mr John gave the warning in Tamale during the opening ceremony of a two-day orientation for newly appointed District DRIP Coordinators from the Northern and Savannah Regions.

The training aimed to build the capacity of coordinators to manage the programme’s heavy and expensive equipment efficiently.

The Minister revealed that the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) had taken delivery of six wheel loaders, two low beds, two bulldozers and other machines to be stationed at the RCC for use by any MMDA upon request.

He, however, expressed concern that some Assemblies had been reluctant to return the equipment after use, citing the Zabzugu District Assembly’s year-long hold on a wheel loader as an example.

He tasked the newly appointed Regional DRIP Coordinator, Mr Seidu Seini, to ensure the immediate return of the wheel loader to the NRCC by the close of the week, in the same condition it was released, warning that failure to comply would attract punitive action.

Mr John further urged the new district coordinators to ensure transparency, accountability, technical efficiency, safety, environmental responsibility and community engagement in their work.

He assured them of the NRCC’s readiness to support them in overcoming operational challenges, provided they adhered to the right procedures.

The DRIP is a government initiative aimed at equipping MMDAs with machinery, technical expertise and resources to rehabilitate, maintain and construct local roads, particularly in rural communities with poor road networks that limit access to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.

NDC Used, Dumped Shatta Wale – Okatakyie Afrifa

0

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, Shatta Wale

Media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has alleged that dancehall star, Shatta Wale, was used by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for political gain and later abandoned.

Speaking on his programme in a video shared on X on August 14, 2025, Afrifa-Mensah claimed that Shatta campaigned for John Mahama and the NDC ahead of the 2024 elections, helping them secure power.

He further alleged that after the party’s victory, the government has been using the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to silence the musician.

“They have used Shatta Wale and dumped him… Now EOCO is being used to shut him up so he cannot criticise the government,” he said.

The comments come amid ongoing controversy between Shatta Wale and EOCO, which began in June 2025 when EOCO seized a 2019 Lamborghini Urus from his residence in Trassaco Valley, Accra.

EOCO, acting on a request from the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice, said the car was linked to Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian American serving an 86-month prison term in the United States for a $4.7 million fraud scheme.

The agency stated the vehicle was purchased with proceeds from the crime and was needed for victim restitution.

Shatta Wale has denied any involvement in the fraud, saying he bought the vehicle for $150,000 from Kwabena Adu-Boahene, a former National Signals Bureau officer, and had no knowledge of its alleged criminal ties.

He also accused EOCO of staging an “armed raid” on his home, a claim EOCO refuted, stating the seizure was peaceful and that the musician voluntarily surrendered the car to protect his image.

Hannah Sarpong, the wife of the late National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Sarpong, has delivered an emotional tribute to her husband, expressing her struggle to accept his passing.

Speaking at an interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15, Mrs. Sarpong recalled her husband’s final words to her before embarking on what he described as “a return journey.” She said, “I am still looking forward to welcoming you back home, my dear husband.”

Her remarks formed part of a tribute titled “To My Dearest Friend,” in which she described Mr. Sarpong as a man of strength, wisdom, and compassion who gave his all to his family, his people, and his country.

Samuel Sarpong was among eight people who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. The accident also claimed the lives of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Below is the full text of the tribute by Samuel Sarpong’s wife, titled “To My Dearest Friend.”

“My beloved husband, my dearest friend, my steadfast pillar, it’s with the heaviest of hearts that I share this tribute. I am still struggling to accept that you are truly gone. You were not just my husband. You were my partner in every sense of the word. You stood by me in love, in faith, and under very extreme difficult circumstances. You challenged me to walk through the journey of life.

You were a man of strength, wisdom, and compassion for me and the family. I watched with admiration as you gave your all to your family, your people, and your country. But more than your public service, it was your love and devotion at home that made you truly extraordinary.

You made our home a place of peace, a kingdom of life, and a home of happiness that breeds and reinforces the bond of family unity. You cared for us with such gracious love and led us with such a determined heart. You prayed with us, dreamed with us, and stood by us no matter the season.

I will forever cherish the quiet moments we shared, the dreams we built together, and the love we nurtured over the years. Your absence is a deep wound in my heart, but your love is still my comfort.

I remember the call you put through to me in the early hours of that faithful and dark Wednesday, indicating that you were leaving for Obuasi on a national assignment.

You said it was a return journey. I am still looking forward to welcoming you back home, my dear husband.

Your departure was so sudden that I still cannot believe it. The news of your departure continues to cut through my very nerves, leaving a vacuum of unimaginable pain in my heart.

Oh, Sarpong Kumankuma, do hear my call and come back. Tell me this news is not true.

The day is gloomy, the sun is gone, the weather is thick, darkness is falling, and the space is empty. Hear our voice, hear the voice of your beloved wife and children, my dear husband.

We can still hear the sound of your footsteps around the house, offering protection for the family. Your presence represented hope, your words breed love, and your work produces joy and happiness.

You ran a good race, my husband. May the doors of heaven be open for you until we meet again. Rest well, my dear husband.

Sarpong Kumankuma, nanti yie.
Damirefa due.”

Farmers’ group pushes for licensing to protect markets and consumers – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

A group of farmers under the banner “The Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana” is urging the formal licensing and training of farmers.

The warn that unsafe agrochemical use and outdated practices are eroding consumer trust and threatening Ghana’s standing in lucrative export markets.

The Association argues that farming should be regulated like medicine, law, or teaching — where practitioners are certified and accountable.

Without such measures, they say, contaminated produce could trigger health crises at home and costly rejection of Ghanaian goods abroad.

In an interview with Citi Business News, President of the Association Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu stressed that with agriculture contributing billions of cedis to GDP and employing a large share of Ghana’s workforce, the stakes are too high to allow substandard practices to persist.

“The Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana is calling on all Farmer-Based Organisations (FBOs) to come together to regulate the farming profession. This call is due to concerns about the abuse of agrochemicals on crops and poor agricultural practices,” the group said.

Asserting that : “Farming is a profession like medicine, teaching, or law. Just as professionals like lawyers or doctors require licenses and training, farmers should receive proper training and licensing to operate.”

The group added that:”Proper training and regulation can help reduce health implications for people consuming produce from farms using unsafe practices.”

The wife of the late Dr Omane Boamah, Rita Boamah The wife of the late Dr Omane Boamah, Rita Boamah

Rita Omane Boamah, the wife of the late Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, shared touching memories of their life together at the final funeral rite at the Black Star Square.

In a tribute read on her behalf at the final funeral rite on August 15, 2025, she recalled meeting her husband for the first time on a Medical School bus.

She also reminisced about their favourite night walks to buy kenkey and fish, describing them as moments that deepened their bond.

Recounting moments when he was alive, he often asked me, “Abena Rita what will you do when I am not around”.

“I never answered and till today I don’t have an answer.”

Dr Omane Boamah was one of eight people who died in the Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.

The delegation was travelling to Obuasi to attend the launch of the Responsible Community and Cooperative Mining Programme when the crash occurred.

‘Daddy, why did you leave us so soon?’ – The emotional tribute of Dr Omane Boamah’s children

Read full tribute below

When peace like a river attended my way, when sorrow like sea billows roll, whatever my Lord, thou has taught me to say, it is well with my soul.

KB, as I affectionately called you, we were destined to be together. Though I was not a medical student, fate brought us together on that fateful day when I boarded the Medical School bus.

Our friendship started and was nothing short of love and adventure. Our night walk from my home to buy Kenkey and fish and vice versa. I always looked forward to visiting you in school so we could embark on our love walk to buy kenkey and fish. Thus, our walk to buy kenkey and fish became our hallmark.

In fact, I saw a father in you because you were the exact replica of my dad. You also confirmed to me, when you first met my dad, that you knew you had found in me a partner for life.

I had no doubt you will be a loving and perfect father to our children. You were truly God-sent. Your commitment and love was such that you proposed we got married on my birthday. And we have always had a double celebration on my birthday, which I was looking forward to this year also.

When we started having kids, you were a wonderful father. You were a great source of hope to me and the children. Despite your busy schedule as a medical doctor and later in your political roles, you either bathed the children every morning or dressed them up while I bathed them.

You were their favourite teacher because you knew their syllabus back-to-back. You always had a strict timetable for their private studies yet you made room for their play and adventure. You were truly a family man- the definition of a genuine person with a pure heart of gold.

In our years of marriage, you always asked, Abena Rita, what will you do when I am not around? I never answered and till today I don’t have an answer.

I will, with the help of God, take care of mummy and the three kids. Knowing who you are, I believe you will be looking down on us to guide us through the heavens.

Kofi B, thank you for loving me.

Thank you for loving the children.

Fix energy and cocoa sectors to safeguard economy

Cocoa is one of Ghana’s key sources of income Cocoa is one of Ghana’s key sources of income

The World Bank has said Ghana must urgently address challenges in its energy and cocoa sectors to sustain economic growth and stability.

In its latest report, the Bank warned that poor management of state-owned enterprises and declining export revenues could reverse recent economic gains.

It stressed the need for energy sector reforms, including increased private sector participation, to enhance efficiency and improve revenue collection.

“Energy sector reform, including through private sector participation, is urgent to improve management effectiveness and the collection of energy revenues,” the report stated.

Cocoa, one of Ghana’s key sources of income, also faces significant risks due to volatile global prices, low productivity, and the impact of climate change. Without targeted interventions, these issues could weaken the economy.

Although Ghana’s economy grew by 5.7% in 2024 and 5.3% in early 2025, the report projects a slowdown to 3.9% this year, driven by high interest rates, inflation, and global uncertainties.

The World Bank advised Ghana to maintain fiscal discipline, enhance the efficiency of public spending, and create more jobs, particularly for young people while boosting productivity in agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

Addressing the energy and cocoa sector challenges, the report concluded, is essential not only to protect the economy but also to unlock new opportunities for growth.

‘It’s coming home’ – The undignified row over the body of Zambia’s ex-president

0

“It’s coming home!” – a phrase indelibly linked to English football fans – has now gained currency among some Zambians in the battle over what to do with the body of former President Edgar Lungu.

The 68-year-old died two months ago in South Africa where he was being treated for an undisclosed illness.

In the latest episode of what is now a full-blown saga, a Pretoria court ruled in the Zambian government’s favour, saying that in the public interest, Lungu’s remains can be repatriated and given a state funeral, against the wishes of the family.

The decision triggered celebrations among some governing party supporters, who shared Facebook posts with the phrase: “It’s coming home,” as if Zambia had won a trophy.

An undignified response, perhaps, but it has come to symbolise how divisive and partisan this has become.

For some, who are fed up with the row, the sorrow and grief that came with Lungu’s passing have faded into feelings of fatigue.

But despite a host of more pressing economic problems, public discussions continue to be dominated by the fallout from the death of the former president, who led the country for six years from 2015.

The seeds of the controversy were sown in the feud between Lungu and his successor – the man who soundly beat him in the 2021 election – Hakainde Hichilema. But it has now spiralled into a row laced with wild accusations of witchcraft.

When the judge in South Africa made his ruling last week, the ensuing anger from Lungu’s older sister was telling.

Bertha Lungu burst into a fit of rage, crying uncontrollably as she hurled unsavoury words at Zambia’s Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, who was also present in court.

“Kabesha, Lungu is not your father’s son… he’s not Hakainde’s son… This is really painful. I don’t want to go to Zambia,” she cried as people, including her niece, Tasila Lungu, struggled to comfort her and cover her mouth.

The body has not yet been repatriated to Zambia because the Lungu family is appealing against the South African judge’s decision – a case that is due to be heard on Monday.

This was all supposed to have been settled in June, when the family initially agreed that there could be a state funeral in Zambia. But the plans were scuppered over a dispute about what role President Hichilema would play.

Lungu’s family said one of his dying wishes was that Hichilema should not go anywhere near his body.

The key to understanding the animosity was the more than 100 days that Hichilema, opposition leader at the time, spent in detention in 2017, awaiting trial on treason charges.

He was accused of endangering the life of then-President Lungu after his motorcade allegedly refused to give way to the one transporting the head of state.

The charges were only dropped after the intervention of the secretary general of the Commonwealth. This was one of several times that Hichilema was arrested while he was in the opposition.

In turn, the Lungus have alleged persecution under Hichilema. Tasila and the former president’s widow, Esther, continue to face corruptions charges, which they deny.

Lungu’s family have vowed that they are prepared to wait for the court process as long as it takes to ensure he receives a burial they consider dignified, even if it means stalling the process, according to their spokesperson Makebi Zulu.

They insist that while they were open to burying Lungu in Zambia, they want to honour his wishes that Hichilema should not attend the event.

But the authorities are adamant that the former president should be accorded a state funeral to be attended by his successor and given a proper send-off as a former president.

The government, through the attorney general, has even indicated Lungu may have to be buried without the family’s involvement.

“If they want to set a precedent, let them give us reasons why the current president should not go near the casket. And who has told them that he wants to be near the casket, anyway?” he told the state broadcaster ZNBC.

“We are ready as government to discuss with the family, we will never ignore the family unless the family just walks out… but the family has a right to say: ‘We are not coming, we are not part of it.’ Then we will proceed and bury without them.”

There is no Zambian law that stipulates how former presidents should be buried.

Traditionally, all ex-leaders have been accorded state funerals and buried at Embassy Park, which is specifically reserved for them.

Sishuwa Sishuwa, a Zambian historian and senior lecturer at South Africa’s Stellenbosch University, strongly disagrees with the idea that Lungu could be buried without his family’s involvement.

“Such reckless statements are culturally insensitive, undermine the government’s claims that its actions are motivated by the desire to accord Lungu a dignified burial, and indicate that political considerations rather than public interest are the key drivers at play,” he told the BBC.

“The failure by Hichilema to rein in on the unruly conduct of his officials and supporters has fed public perception that the president approves of such conduct and consequently heightened divisions.”

He argues that had Hichilema publicly indicated that he would stay away from the funeral, Lungu would have been buried long ago.

Dr Sishuwa says that the authorities’ determination to take the body of Lungu from the grieving family – in the name of giving him a dignified funeral – has not only worsened political divisions but has also fed the belief that the body may be wanted “for occult reasons”, in a country where the belief in witchcraft is widespread.

Nevers Mumba, the leader of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, which is in a political alliance with Hichilema’s party, has defended the president.

“What drives [the president] is not obsession, but a deep, deep sense of duty. Hakainde Hichilema never gives up on anything he pursues as long as he believes he is doing the right thing,” Mumba, who is also a pastor, wrote on his Facebook page.

“He fights, with a clear conscience till the end, and he keeps on refining his methods until he gets it right.”

How long this fight will go on for is not known, but several episodes of the saga are yet to be written.

Zambians may shrug and try to focus on other matters, but they will still get drawn into the debate about whether the body should “come home”.

Okatakyie Afrifa Claims Government Targeting Shatta Wale, Offers Advice to Dancehall Star

News Hub Creator4h

Political commentator Okatakyie Afrifa has stirred public debate with claims that Ghana’s ruling government may be intentionally working to undermine the career of renowned dancehall artist Shatta Wale. In a recent statement, Afrifa alleged that there are covert efforts aimed at damaging the musician’s image and professional trajectory.

While he did not provide concrete evidence to back these assertions, his comments have triggered mixed reactions across social media and within political and entertainment circles.

Afrifa described the alleged actions as politically motivated and cautioned Shatta Wale to remain alert. He urged the artist to keep records of all engagements with state authorities and to consult legal professionals when necessary.

The political analyst framed his advice as a necessary response to what he termed “political persecution,” suggesting that high-profile figures in the entertainment industry are not exempt from state pressure.

These claims come at a time when Shatta Wale has faced several legal and regulatory challenges, including previous arrests and public disputes with entertainment oversight bodies. While Afrifa’s accusations have resonated with some fans and observers who believe the artist is being treated unfairly, others have dismissed the remarks as unsubstantiated and speculative.

No official response has been issued by government spokespersons regarding the allegations, and Shatta Wale has yet to publicly comment on the matter.

The controversy has reignited broader conversations about the intersection of politics and the creative arts in Ghana. Many are questioning whether entertainers are being subjected to undue scrutiny or targeted for their influence and outspokenness.

Afrifa’s comments have added fuel to a longstanding debate over artistic freedom, state control, and the challenges artists face in navigating public life. Whether the matter gains further traction may depend on whether Shatta Wale chooses to respond or if new developments emerge.

Gorgeous Ankara Styles for Church and Special Occasions

When attending church or special events, it is important to dress in a way that shows respect and elegance. Fashion has changed over time, and now there are many beautiful and stylish options for women. These outfits help women feel confident, decent, and classy.

One popular style is the dress and coat combo. A knee-length or midi dress made from silk, satin, or lace looks great with a nice fitted coat. The dress can be in soft colors like navy, burgundy, or pastels. The coat adds warmth and style, making the whole outfit more polished.

Another lovely option is the peplum dress. This dress shape highlights the waist and gives a smart, modern look. Many peplum dresses have lace, beads, or ruffles, making them perfect for weddings or church services. You can pair this dress with a small clutch bag or bold earrings.

For those who like simple and covered styles, the maxi dress is a great choice. These long dresses often come with long sleeves and high necklines. Fabrics like cotton, chiffon, or silk make them comfortable and elegant. Adding a shawl or cardigan can complete the outfit beautifully.

Structured suits are also coming back in style. A suit with a pencil skirt gives a strong and professional look. These often come in bright colors like emerald green or blue and can be worn with hats or scarves.

Finally, accessories complete the look. Hats with flowers or beads are very trendy again. Simple jewelry like pearls, gold chains, or brooches add a classy touch.
