Akuapem Poloo wins Discovery of the Year at the 2024 Ghana Movie Awards for her role in ‘Widow’s Gift,’ directed by Juliet Ibrahim.
Ghanaian actress and socialite, Rosemond Brown, popularly known as Akuapem Poloo was adjudged the Discovery of the Year at the just-ended Ghana Movie Awards on January 18, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
A national communicator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), William Sangmor says the president wants to disgrace Haruna Iddrisu by appointing him to the education ministry.
He said that based on the challenges faced in the education sector, he was expecting the president to nominate a more experienced person to the ministry instead of Haruna Iddrisu.
Despite describing Haruna Iddrisu as a fine gentleman, William Sangmor was of the view that Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa would have been perfect for the position.
As part of the second batch of ministerial appointments, President John Dramani Mahama named the former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu as the Minister of Education.
Haruna Iddrisu, who is the Member of Parliament for Tamale South is a former Minister for Employment and Labour Relations.
Despite his experience and human relationship skills, his appointment has raised questions about his experience in the Education sector.
Speaking on a another station in Accra on Friday, January 17, 2025, William Sangmor said because the president knows that the education ministry has more challenges, he is placing Haruna Iddrisu there so that he can fail due to inexperience.
“Why didn’t the president appoint his lovely son, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to education because at least he has the experience?” William Sangmor quizzed, adding that where the president is placing him is rather easy to handle with fewer challenges.
The NPP communicator also touched on Sammy Gyamfi’s appointment as the Acting Managing Director of PMMC, saying that although he is a gentleman, he lacks the experience to manage the affairs of the commission.
He even described Sammy Gyamfi’s appointment as “job for the boys”.
President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, January 16, 2025, appointed Mr Sammy Gyamfi Esq. as the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
In that role, Gyamfi will be responsible for setting up the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), one of the key promises in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto.
The establishment of the GoldBod will be under the direction of the Minister for Finance.
The GoldBod is one of the top priorities of the Mahama administration aimed at economic revitalization and shall, among other things, be responsible for the sustainable management and marketing of the country’s gold resources for the benefit of the Ghanaian people. It will include formalizing the small-scale gold mining sector and providing mining support services for the industry.

A POLICE officer accompanying traders from Buipe in the Northern Region to Sunyani is currently battling for his life at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital after robbers attacked the bus they were traveling on.
The armed Robbers shot the poloce officer, Samuel Atitsogbe, upon reaching Ashiemu on the Techiman- Sunyani Highway.
The police officer sustained severe gunshot wounds on the chest and wrist while the driver of the vehicle, Bright Fourjour, also sustained several gunshot wounds.
Head of Accident, Emergency, Trauma and Orthopedic unit of the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, Dr. Hasson Ayum Lanyor, who confirmed the incident to DGN said the officer is responding to treatment.
‘He was brought here and according to those who accompanied him armed robbers ambushed a vehicle on which he was escorting passengers and was short at but managed to escape.
“Luckily, his condition is stable, though he suffered chest wounds, it didn’t affect the lungs but small bones at the wrist were broken. We did first surgery and clean the wounds and we have managed him till now,” the doctor said.
The driver of the sprinter vehicle, Bright Fourjour, with the vehicle registration number AW 62-110-14 also sustained gunshot wonds.
Narrating the incident to this reporter, one of the passengers expalined that they were traveling from Buipe to Sunyani but upon reaching Ashiam on the Sunyani -Techiman Highway the driver realised the lead vehicle among other vehicles has been stopped and being robbed at gun point.
The police escort in the lead vehicle fired at them but his weapon subsequently failed him so he escaped through the nearby bush.
The driver of our vehicle, however in an attempt to change to reverse gear was shot at and our escort in our vehicle also responded but his gun also failed him at the second attempt.
Samuel Atitsogbe whose rank is unknown was overpowered by the robbers who shot at him and they threatened to behead him but he pleaded fervently for them to spear his life so he exchanged his service rifle for his life which they took and sped off living him to his fate.
The traders were then robbed, valuables including their money and mobile phones were taken.

The conflict between gospel artist Mercy Chinwo and her former producer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, CEO of Eezee Conceptz Limited, has escalated, with both parties accusing each other of contract breaches and financial improprieties, as reported by The Guardian.
In a public statement, Onyedikachukwu said, “I housed you for months and gave you a solid platform to thrive. What is my reward? False accusations and a campaign to tarnish my reputation.”
He alleged that Chinwo had failed to honor her five-year contract with Eezee Conceptz, which began in 2017, and had used her religious influence to spread misinformation.
Onyedikachukwu further claimed that Eezee Conceptz had invested significant resources in her career, including over $635,000 in payments, and accused her of breaching their agreement.
He maintained, “I gave you opportunities that many only dream of, yet you’ve chosen to repay me with dishonesty and defamation.”
Mercy Chinwo has taken legal action, resulting in an arrest warrant issued by the Federal High Court in Lagos against Onyedikachukwu for alleged financial misconduct involving $345,000.
However, Onyedikachukwu’s lawyer, Mr. Maxwell Opara, denied the allegations, stating, “The claims against my client are baseless. He was her producer, not her manager. No funds were diverted.”

Abu Dhabi (UAE) Jan. 19, GNA-Ghana is seeking investors for wind and tidal wave energy potential to increase its renewable portfolio.
That will also increase the country’s total installed capacity to the national grid, serve more unserved communities, reduce greenhouse gasses in the energy sector, and hournor international commitments.
Mr Wisdom Ahiataku-Togobo, the Director at AT Consult, a sustainable Energy Consulting firm disclosed to the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi.
Under the theme, “Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,” the two-day meeting brought together ministers and high-level delegates from IRENA’s 139 Member States, academia, development banks, chief executives and youth, to enhance wider, cross-sectoral collaboration on the energy transition.
Mr Ahiataku-Togobo hinted that studies on wind energy potential had been conducted at 13 areas of which results showed that the wind speeds ranged from good to moderate along the coast from Tema to Aflao.
“The necessary wind speed measurements have been done, locations where the wind speeds can easily be installed to give moderate to good power have been identified. It is now open for prospective investors to come and invest.”
“From the coast of Tema down to Aflao, the land is very plain, and there are no big tall trees, and no mountains on the way. So those were the areas that were found to have moderate to good wind speed and easy access for the installation of utility scale wind power plants,” he added.
The necessary policy instruments, Mr Ahiataku-Togobo said, had been put in place to attract investors in the sector.
Mr Ahiataku-Togobo who is the immediate past Director of Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and the Bui Power Authority stated that the significant progress had also been made in the area of wave energy and that it would be included in the country’s energy mix in the immediate future.
“Wave energy potential was found around Ada through Anloga and Keta. It is not surprising because that section of the sea has strong waves and it is difficult for fishermen to go there for expedition,” he said.
“Indeed, there was a test wave energy plant installed and within three days the wave was so strong that it scattered the whole thing. The team of engineers are remodeling a more robust plant, which is almost done for testing.”
Mr Ahiataku-Togobo expressed the hope that the country by the close of the year (2025) would have the first five megawatts wave system in place.
In the sub-region, he said the country had done creditably well in the area of renewable energy explaining that 30 per cent of its energy was generated by Akosombo and Bui hydro dams while plans were in place to increase it by 10 per cent in the next five years.
Ghana’s total GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions recorded a three-fold increase, from 1990 to 2022, driven largely by energy sector growth, the latest Ghana’s Sixth National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report by the Environmental Protection Agency has revealed.
Energy is dominated by fuel combustion; the sector’s emissions surged ninefold from 1990 to 2022.
In the same period, stationary combustion significantly increased by 847.0 per cent.
Both energy sources were driven by increased vehicle numbers and a shift from fuel oil to natural gas in electricity generation.
Similarly, GHG emissions from oil and gas also significantly increased due to the increased expansion of the industry (production and development) since commercialisation in 2012.
Since 2012, the emissions have risen by 498.9 per cent relative to the 2022 levels.
Mr Ahiataku-Togobo and other energy experts with deep insight in the sector told GNA that they were of the strong view that policy directions to increase renewable energy projects, the inclusion of nuclear power as the energy baseload would reduce emissions in the sector.
He said while increasing access to cheap power, it would support Ghana’s planned transition from fossil fuel powered vehicles to the use of electronic vehicles and encourage electric cooking.
“That will also mean reducing the poor air quality causing public health concerns and economic burden on people and the country,” he said.

Two days before the Gaza ceasefire agreement comes into force, the Kingdom of Morocco, whose Sovereign, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, chairs the Al-Quds Committee, welcomes the progress made towards halting the hostilities and attacks that have been unleashed on civilians since October 7, 2023.

Former Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has expressed concerns over the public nature of the operations conducted by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama.
In a discussion on JoyNews on January 18, 2025, Atta Akyea questioned the need for the members of ORAL to publicize their activities, suggesting that such operations should be conducted quietly to avoid unnecessary attention and panic among the citizenry.

Inflation affected labour in 2024
A survey conducted about Ghana’s business environment and competitiveness in 2024, has shown that rising inflation in 2024, affected the affordability of labour.
The survey conducted by the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) noted that for the first time, cost of telecoms and the regulatory framework appeared on the list of poorly rated business components.
This emphasised areas that require immediate government attention to enhance Ghana’s business environment.
The survey also identified taxation policy, cost of telecoms, government bureaucracy, and the regulatory framework as the top concerns for businesses in 2024.
“Despite challenges, businesses rated the availability of telecom facilities as the best-performing business component, though this rating declined from 36% in 2023 to 20% in 2024. Other positively rated components include the availability of power, labour, water, and logistics partners,” parts of the report read.
It also noted that corruption remains a persistent issue, consistently appearing among the top five most declined components over the past four years.
“Tax policy and the cost of power also remain key concerns, highlighting the need for government engagement to develop sustainable solutions. Respondents identified advanced technology and telecom services as the most improved components since 2021. For the first time, the availability of quality infrastructure was included in the list of improvements, reflecting incremental progress,” it said.
In terms of cost of doing business in Ghana, tax policy and macroeconomic challenges, including the weakening of the Ghana Cedi, were highlighted as key drivers of high operational costs, thereby increasing cost of doing business.
“Persistent exchange rate volatility continues to influence the pricing of domestic factors of production, the report highlighted.
Respondents identified domestic marketing, certifications, quality control, and labour as the most affordable business components over the past four years.
“However, rising inflation in 2024 has impacted the affordability of labour,” it said.
The UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC), a member-based trade association that promotes trade between the UK and Ghana, released the 6th edition of its annual Ghana Business Environment and Competitive Survey (BECS) Report for the year 2024.
725 businesses across Ghana comprising UKGCC member and non-member companies from 22 industries and ranging from small to large companies, participated in the survey.
Business components assessed included availability of telecom, power, labour, water, and logistics partners, taxation policy, cost of telecoms, government bureaucracy, regulatory framework, and government support of exports.
The Report reveals a mixed picture for Ghana’s business environment.
“While businesses express cautious optimism about future growth, particularly in technology adoption and market expansion, significant challenges remain,” the release said.

Accra, Jan. 19, GNA – The Ghana Hotels Association (GHA) has urged Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Tourism Minister Designate to consider apportioning part of the one percent tourism levy to support the private sector.
Dr Edward Ackah-Nyamike, President, GHA, said they had always advocated for part of the fund to be used to support the private sector, especially trade associations, because they served as channels for that payment.
“While the levy is intended for industry development, it should also help empower trade associations to fulfill their roles effectively, benefiting the broader tourism sector,” he said.
The call comes after President John Dramani Mahama, on Thursday, nominated Madam Gomashie, as the Minister Designate for the Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Ministry.
Dr Ackah-Nyamike said the Association has great expectations of her, hence the call, saying “a lot of trade associations are very weak, and not able to make any impact, but there is so much that they can do, when given the necessary support.”
“If we strengthen the associations, they will also help to bring in more money into the fund.”
He noted that the Association expects her to give extra attention to the Public-Private Partnership Forum, which is a provision in the GTA Act 817, aimed at bringing industry players together to ensure that they were on the same page with her all the time.
“This quarterly forum will give her the opportunity to listen to industry players, and understand their challenges and issues.”
Mr Ackah-Nyamike said the Minister Designate must consider the consolidation of taxes for the industry at levels that are very affordable.
“We expect that she will champion that course to ensure that the taxes do not overbite us, that will make it counterproductive.”
“She will also have to look at reducing utility tariffs, as it will go a long way to deal with our operational costs and bring it down significantly. Because those two utilities have a strong bearing on our operational costs.”
He also urged Madam Gomashie to champion the establishment of the tourism school, which would be a special purpose school for the industry.
“From the Hotels Association angle, we are looking at a tourism school that will provide more like an in-service training for staff already in the industry, and will be mandatory for all players in the industry to ensure uniformity in the sector. We should have some basic standards, which will be taught in that tourism school.”
“Infrastructure development should also be on her agenda as the country pushes for the introduction of medical or health tourism.”
Dr Ackah-Nyamike also urged the minister Designate to ensure that the country attracts a lot of foreign investments, saying “there are a whole lot of opportunities in the industry that we need investors to come on board to partner us to achieve.”
“The Meeting, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) is one event that attracts visitors into the country. If we get those big conferences, we will get a lot of people into the country at a particular time and that is where we will also benefit from.”
Madam Gomashie, according to the GHA, must promote domestic tourism to get people excited to visit other parts of the country.
“In partnership with government we can continue rotating the celebration of the Independence Day and other national activities across the country, so, people will be able to travel to various parts of the country to promote domestic tourism.”
He urged the Minister Designate to continue with the “Beyond the Return” initiative, introduced by the former administration as it had served the industry quite well and should be championed.
“She also has to keep an eye on the regulatory bodies that regulate the industry.”
He said Madam Gomashie was qualified for the job because she had been an industry person, especially the culture and creative arts aspects, and been involved in a lot of tourism.
She has been a deputy minister at the same ministry before. Her disposition is also right for the job in terms of human relations and dealing with various stakeholders in the industry. President John Dramani Mahama has set up a Constitutional Review Committee.
The Committee is expected to identify and address the gaps and challenges with the implementation of previous constitutional review work done by the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee.
They are also tasked to engage key stakeholders to solicit their views on the proposals for amendment of the 1992 Constitution and make actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing democratic governance in the country.

Bishop David Abioye is finally set to start his own Sunday Service months after he retired from Bishop David Oyedepo’s Winners Chapel church.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, January 19, the preacher posted a flyer informing his followers that “something new is here.”
Bishop Abioye invited people to join in the service.

The flyer shared details about Bishop Abioye’s service. According to the flyer, the service will be every Sunday at Los Angeles Mall, Ahmadu Bello Way, Kado in Abuja.
The time stated was 5:00 pm. He urged people to join him every Sunday “for an uplifting and life-changing experience.”
“Come and experience the power of connection and transformation every Sunday. Let’s grow together and discover what’s possible,” he captioned his post.
The announcement was met with excitement from netizens, who had looked forward to the cleric starting his own church since leaving Winners Chapel.
Bishop Abioye‘s announcement comes days after he dropped a cryptic Facebook post welcoming people to church.

Kumawood actor Taylor One has issued a stern warning to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and some media houses in the country not to speak against President John Dramani Mahama’s government.
In a video shared on social media, the actor noted that people who failed to speak against the Akufo-Addo-led administration should keep quiet for the next four years.
“I have heard some people saying that they have given the president a month or two to start criticizing him. But I want to tell them that they can’t do that because you were quiet when Akufo-Addo was mismanaging the affairs of the country.
“If you didn’t talk during the last eight years, shut up and don’t say anything about whatever will happen from today till the end of the four years,” he said.

The General Assembly after critiquing the work done by the Awards Nominations Committee approved the final list of top performers for the 2022/24 calendar year which ended in September.
The list includes the SWAG Top seven sports journalist under the year of review, Nana Akua Amankwaa, Bright Kankan Boadu, Fiifi Anaman, Muftawu Nabila, Kelvin Owusu Ansah, and Bill Eshun.

Accra, Jan 19, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama, has, in fulfilment of his promise to see through the implementation of the Constitutional Review Process, established a Constitution Review Committee.
The eight-member Committee is under the Chairmanship of Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, the Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), while Dr Rainer Akumperigeya is the Secretary.
Other members are: Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Dr Godwin Djokoto, Mrs Charlotte Osei, Dr Esi Ansah, Prof Kwame Karikari and Mr Ibrahim Tanko Amidu.
A statement issued by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesman to the President, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the Committee was expected to identify and address the gaps in, and the challenges with the implementation of, previous constitutional review work done by the 2010 Committee.
It is to engage key stakeholders to solicit their views on the proposals for Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative amendment of the 1992 Constitution, and make actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing democratic governance in the country.
It said the composition of the Committee underscored the President’s desire to engage persons of proven expertise, dedication to the service of the nation and commitment to good governance, to manage the process.
The statement said the Committee would present its recommendations for constitutional amendments within five months for consideration by the Government.

Former First Lady Ernestina Naadu Mills recently paid a visit to President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama to congratulate them on their historic return to the Jubilee House.
Mrs. Mills, who met the First Family at their residence in Accra, extended her heartfelt congratulations to President Mahama on his victory in the December 2024 election.
Since leaving public office following the passing of her husband, President John Evans Atta Mills, in 2012, Mrs. Mills has kept a low profile and largely refrained from attending state functions. Her engagement with the Mahamas marks one of her rare public appearances over the past 12 years.
It is worth noting that during the tenure of her late husband, who served as Ghana’s President from January 7, 2009, until his untimely demise on July 24, 2012, John Dramani Mahama was Vice President. Following President Mills’ passing, Mr. Mahama was sworn in as President and went on to win the December 7, 2012, election, serving a full term from January 7, 2013, to January 7, 2017.
After losing the 2016 general election to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mr. Mahama transitioned to opposition. However, his resounding victory in the December 7, 2024, election marked a remarkable political comeback, leading to his inauguration for a second term on January 7, 2025.
Mrs. Mills’ visit serves as a symbolic reunion, reflecting the shared history and enduring connections between the Mahama and Mills families.

Adaklu Waya (V/R), Jan. 19, GNA – The Adaklu Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sent a congratulatory message to Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Member of Parliament of the area, on his nomination as the Minister of Roads and Highways.
President John Dramani Mahama nominated Mr Agbodza on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
“Your nomination is well deserved,” the congratulatory message, signed by Mr Hayford Amenuvie, Constituency Secretary, copied to the Ghana News Agency at Adaklu Waya, said on Saturday.
It noted that Mr Agbodza’s tireless efforts in ensuring development, employment opportunities for the youth through apprenticeship, and driving progressive initiatives in the constituency had not gone unnoticed.
“Your dedication, passion and commitment to the welfare of the people are truly inspiring,” the statement said.
It expressed the confidence that he would bring the same level of enthusiasm and expertise to his new role as the Roads and Highways Minister if confirmed.
“We wish you strength, wisdom and success as you embark on this new journey and look forward to the positive impact you will make in bringing more development projects to the constituency, Volta Region and Ghana at large.”
Mr Jerry Ameko, the Adaklu Constituency NDC Chairman, told the GNA that he was optimistic that Mr Agbodza would perform to the expectation of Ghanaians and make the party proud.
He admitted that some of the road networks in the country were bad but pleaded with Ghanaians to exercise restraint on their demands as the government worked to fix them.
Mr Ameko commended the people for voting massively for the party and assured them of more development projects under the President Mahama-led government.
Meanwhile Tsiami Kpotaka, the linguist of Togbe Lablulu Tegbeza IV of Adaklu Waya, led some chiefs to the Party office at Adaklu Waya to thank the gods for the nomination of Mr Agbodza as the Minister designate for Roads and Highways.
They poured libation to the gods and asked for their protection over the nominee on his new role.
They thanked President Mahama for making good his promise to them during his campaign tour of the area to make Mr Agbodza a minister if he won the election.
Mr Agbodza, if confirmed, will be the second person from Adaklu to head the Roads and Highways Ministry in the fourth Republic.
The first person was the late Steve Akorli who was appointed in 2000 during the tenure of Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.

The Ghana Hotels Association (GHA) has urged Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Tourism Minister-designate, to prioritise allocating a portion of the 1% tourism levy to support the private sector.
Edward Ackah-Nyamike, president of the GHA, has long advocated for the levy to empower trade associations, which play a pivotal role in industry development.
“While the levy is intended for industry development, it should also help empower trade associations to fulfil their roles effectively, benefiting the broader tourism sector,” he said.
The appeal follows the nomination of Gomashie by President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday (16 January) as minister-designate for the Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Ministry.
Ackah-Nyamike expressed optimism about Gomashie’s appointment, highlighting the critical need to bolster trade associations.
“A lot of trade associations are very weak and not able to make any impact, but there is so much that they can do when given the necessary support,” he noted.
“If we strengthen the associations, they will also help to bring in more money into the fund.”
The GHA president urged Gomashie to prioritise the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Forum, a key provision in the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Act 817.
The forum, he explained, is a platform for constant dialogue between the minister and industry players.
“This quarterly forum will give her the opportunity to listen to industry players and understand their challenges and issues,” Ackah-Nyamike stated.
He also emphasised the need for affordable and consolidated taxation for the hospitality industry.
“We expect that she will champion that course to ensure that the taxes do not overbite us; that will make it counterproductive,” he added.
“She will also have to look at reducing utility tariffs, as it will go a long way to deal with our operational costs and bring it down significantly. Because those two utilities have a strong bearing on our operational costs.”
One of the GHA’s long-standing proposals is the establishment of a specialised tourism school.
Ackah-Nyamike underscored the need for this institution to provide in-service training for industry staff and ensure uniform standards across the sector.
“Infrastructure development should also be on her agenda as the country pushes for the introduction of medical or health tourism,” he said.
Ackah-Nyamike highlighted the importance of attracting foreign investments to tap into the untapped potential of Ghana’s tourism sector.
He specifically pointed to opportunities in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) space.
“If we get those big conferences, we will get a lot of people into the country at a particular time, and that is where we will also benefit from,” he said.
On domestic tourism, he urged the minister-designate to collaborate with the government to decentralise national events, such as Independence Day celebrations, to encourage Ghanaians to explore different parts of the country.
The GHA also called on Gomashie to continue the “Beyond the Return” initiative, launched by the previous administration, which has been instrumental in promoting Ghana as a global tourism destination.
“She also has to keep an eye on the regulatory bodies that regulate the industry,” Ackah-Nyamike said.
The GHA is confident in Gomashie’s ability to steer the ministry. A veteran in the tourism, culture, and creative arts space, she previously served as a deputy minister in the same ministry.

On Sunday, January 19, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama made a special visit to the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Centre in Kumasi, the church led by popular evangelist Rev. Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, also known as Opambour.
Videos circulating on social media captured the president’s arrival, dressed in a white-traditional outfit, as he arrived at the church in his convoy.
Upon arrival, he was warmly greeted by church executives and Rev. Opambour himself.
The president’s presence sparked excitement among the congregants, who enthusiastically welcomed him with much fanfare.
Inside the church, President Mahama was seen sitting on a couch on the altar, engaging with the church community.

Vegetable and fruit sellers hail agric ministers nomination
Vegetable and fruit sellers around the Tanoboase toll booth in the Techiman North District of the Bono East Region have hailed the nomination of Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare as the Minister-designate for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry.
While expressing their appreciation to President Mahama for the nomination, the traders called on the President to expedite action for the re-opening of the toll booth.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), at Tanoboase, Madam Salomey Kruwaa, the Leader of the Tanoboase Fruits Sellers Association regretted that the economic activities of most of the traders had collapsed due to the closure of the toll booth.
As the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, she said most of the traders and market women in the district were happy about the nomination of Mrs Ofosu-Agyare, hoping to see improvement in the mango and vegetable sectors.
She said those sectors were highly economically viable, but certain challenges were impeding the growth of the sectors.
Other traders at the Tuobodom central market told the GNA that they were also happy About the nomination of their MP, saying they were optimistic that Mrs Ofosu-Agyare would use her new political portfolio to tackle post vegetable and fruits losses in the area.
The constituency is well noted mostly for commercial plantation of tomatoes and fresh mangoes, however due to lack of storage and processing factories, quantities of the tomatoes and mangoes go waste in the crop season every year.
Reacting to the nomination of the MP by President John Dramani Mahama, the traders, mostly women, said they had confidence in the MP, anticipating the setting up of processing and storage facilities to add value to raw tomatoes and mangoes and prevent wastage too.
They expressed appreciation to President Mahama for giving their MP the opportunity to serve in his government.
Madam Salamatu Osman, a tomato seller said she and the vegetable sellers all welcomed Mrs Ofosu-Agyare’s nomination with excitement, saying as a woman, they were highly optimistic that the Minister-designate would expedite action for the establishment of the Women’ Bank policy of the government.
Another trader, trader engaged in pepper and tomatoes at the Tuobodom central market, Mad Adjoa Agyeiwaa told the GNA that the market women were highly in anticipation for the setting up of the Women’s Bank to enable them access soft loans and to grow their economic activities.
Madam Regina Amo Gyamfi who also sells fruits at the market called for investments into the fruits, saying with factories, value could be added to raw mangoes for fruits juice and other purposes.

A massive fire has left many residents of Nima-Moke, a slum in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region, homeless. The blaze, which erupted around 4:30 p.m., consumed over 50 wooden structures, along with the belongings of the residents.The fire spread rapidly, fueled by the highly flammable materials in the area. Nima-Moke is home to numerous migrants from northern Ghana who have moved south in search of better prospects.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus within the Bulk Energy Storage and Transportation (BOST) Limited Company has refuted claims circulating on social media that the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has appointed Mr. Afetsi Awonoor as the Managing Director of BOST. The caucus has described these rumours as baseless, emphasizing that diligent checks reveal that the President has not made such an appointment.
According to the caucus, Mr. Afetsi Awonoor previously served briefly as the Government Relations and Business Development Manager during the tenure of Mr. Kwame Awuah Darko as Managing Director of BOST. However, he resigned from his position following Mr. Awuah Darko’s exit from the company. Since then, the NDC caucus has continued its work diligently within BOST, ensuring the organization fulfills its mandate to support Ghana’s energy sector.
The current speculation about Mr. Awonoor’s alleged appointment, the caucus claims, stems from deliberate efforts by his godfather, Mr. Awuah Darko, to manipulate public opinion and pressure the President into endorsing him for the role. The caucus views this as a calculated move to serve the personal and parochial interests of Mr. Awuah Darko rather than those of BOST or the nation.
“This nefarious agenda is a clear attempt to impose a dispreferred candidate on the President, undermining the due process and discretion of appointing a Managing Director for an institution as critical as BOST,” a spokesperson for the caucus stated.
The caucus has reiterated that appointments to leadership positions within BOST and similar institutions remain the sole prerogative of the President. They have therefore urged Mr. Awuah Darko, as well as any faceless individuals or groups, to desist from arrogating this responsibility to themselves.
“This unwarranted interference not only disrespects the authority of the President but also creates unnecessary confusion and tension within BOST and the larger energy sector,” the statement added.
BOST plays a vital role in Ghana’s energy sector by managing the storage and distribution of petroleum products to ensure energy security. Consequently, any appointment to its leadership is expected to align with national priorities and strategic objectives.
The caucus called on the public to disregard the false information being circulated and advised media outlets and individuals to verify facts before sharing unsubstantiated claims. They also cautioned against allowing personal agendas to overshadow the collective interests of the nation.
In conclusion, the NDC caucus reaffirmed its commitment to working for the progress of BOST and the energy sector, ensuring that Ghana’s interests remain paramount. They emphasized their trust in the President’s ability to appoint a competent and capable managing director at the appropriate time.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Office of the President regarding the leadership of BOST. The NDC caucus assured stakeholders that they remain vigilant and ready to counter any attempts to undermine the integrity of the institution and the country’s governance process.
The management of AngloGold Ashanti Schools has announced the temporary closure of its institutions following escalating security concerns in Obuasi.
This decision comes in the wake of incidents involving the burning of vehicles and damage to private properties, which have raised alarm in the community.
In a notice dated Sunday, January 19, 2025, Simon Peter K. Attah-Cato, Executive Director of AngloGold Ashanti Schools, stated that the schools will remain closed on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
The measure, according to the statement, is aimed at safeguarding the lives and property of students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders.
“We are hopeful that calm will return to the town during this period, allowing us to reopen on Wednesday, January 23, 2025,” the notice read.
Management apologized for the inconvenience caused by the closure and appealed to parents and guardians for their understanding and cooperation during this period of heightened tension.
The decision reflects efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the school community amidst ongoing unrest in the Obuasi area.

Jan 19 (CNN/GNA) – The ceasefire in Gaza is now in effect, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
The truce began at 11:15 a.m. (4:15 a.m. ET). It was delayed by almost three hours after Hamas said there was a “technical” delay in delivering the names of three hostages due to be released to Israel on Sunday.
Israeli strikes after the originally planned ceasefire start time of 8:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. ET) killed at least 13 Palestinians and wounded 30, according to hospital and civil defense officials.
Hamas has released the names of three female Israeli hostages set for release on Sunday. Israel has confirmed it received the list but has not publicly named them.
The hostages are: Romi Gonen (24), Doron Steinbrecher (31) and dual UK-Israeli citizen Emily Damari (28).
Gonen was 23 when she was kidnapped from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. Her family said she was shot in the hand during the attack. According to her mother, Meirav Leshem Gonen, some hostages who were held alongside Gonen and later released reported that her injuries worsened while in captivity. Israeli media has cited her family as confirming that she is on the list.
Steinbrecher, a veterinary nurse, was 30 when she was kidnapped from her apartment in kibbutz Kfar Aza, near the Gaza border. A video showing her alongside two other kidnapped women was released by Hamas in January last year. Her family raised concerns about her health after seeing the footage, with Doron’s brother Dor Steinbrecher telling CNN that she needed daily medication that she was unlikely to be getting while in captivity.
Damari was kidnapped from her home in Kfar Aza when she was 27. Her mother, Mandy Damari, previously said that her daughter was “shot in the hand, injured by shrapnel in her leg, blindfolded, bundled into the back of her own car,” and driven to Gaza. She is the only remaining British citizen held in Gaza.
On October 7, 2023, 251 people were abducted from Israel by Hamas-led militants. The militants continue to hold 94 hostages. Of those, 34 are thought to be dead (although the actual number is expected to be higher). Eighty-one are male and 13 are female; two are aged five or under.

Nigerian comedian Helen Paul
Nigerian comedian and professor Helen Paul has expressed heartfelt gratitude to key figures who shaped her career.
Speaking as a guest on the Honest Bunch podcast hosted by Nedu Wazobia, Paul singled out Dayo Adeneye, popularly known as D1, as a pivotal figure in her journey to success.
“D1 is one of the people God used to change my story,” she shared.
Reflecting on her early struggles, Paul revealed, “When I started my career, all my teeth were brown. It was so bad that I missed out on many offers and gigs.”
She recalled a turning point when D1 reached out to her with a life-changing opportunity.
“D1 called me and said the people who wanted to give me a multi-million-naira deal had also complained about my teeth,” she explained.
Thanks to D1 and Keke Ogungbe, Paul was able to afford dental treatment that transformed her image.
“They paid for my teeth to be fixed, and shortly after, I got the N15 million deal.”

Security analyst, Adam Bonaa
A security analyst, Dr. Adam Bonaa is advocating for a localized approach to addressing conflicts within the country.
It follows widespread reports of nationwide violence that threaten to undermine Ghana’s recent peaceful progress.
These reports of violence have left residents in affected areas living in constant fear.
However, speaking Starr Today with Tutuwaa Danso, Dr. Bonaa stated that unless conflicts are approached locally, they will continue to reoccur.
“We have over-centralized the fight against conflict in this country. As a result, we do not have a policy that addresses conflicts in a localized manner. For instance, we tend to apply a one-size-fits-all approach to conflict resolution, using the same methods in different contexts. This approach has failed in various instances. For example, the method used to resolve the Dagbon crisis is being applied to the Bawku situation, and the approach used in Bawku is being attempted in Anyensuano and Nkwanta South, with no success.”
“Some of us have argued that conflict resolution should be localized. If a conflict is not of national scale, the solution should also be local. Unfortunately, over the years, we have tried to impose a universal solution. I have called for a more tailored approach, and we have the national security policy document, which I believe is a good framework that can be developed further. However, have we assessed the key performance indicators (KPIs) outlined in that document to determine if we can localize solutions effectively? We have yet to do that.”
“The Peace Council lacks the authority to enforce its decisions. It cannot hold anyone accountable. The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is also under-resourced and incapacitated, making it difficult for them to educate local communities on past conflicts. Until these issues are addressed, we will continue to face recurring conflicts across the country. There needs to be a solution to this,” he added.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of the West African Centre for Counter-Extremism (WACCE), Muqtar Mumuni Muqthar urged the government to retrieve weapons in Bawku to de-escalate tensions in the region.
