Controversial U.S.-based Ghanaian content creator cum Lyft Driver, Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, aka Afia Schwarzenegger, trashed the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) red carpet look of numerous Ghanaian celebrities, including the wife of dancehall star Stonebwoy, Dr Louisa Satekla.

Reacting to the blue outfit Dr Louisa wore to the event, which has sparked reactions due to it leaving one breast bare, Afia Schwarzenegger said her choice of dress was a big miss in regards to a red carpet look.

GII Boss Condemns Political Bias in Sammy Gyamfi Scandal

0

The scandal involving GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi continues to ignite widespread outrage across Ghana, as demands for accountability grow louder from both civil society groups and opposition leaders.

Mary Addah, Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), has weighed in strongly, warning that defending the embattled CEO is possible only through what she called a “politically coloured lens”—a perspective she dismissed as hollow.

Traders respond to GUTA’s call to reduce prices as cedi strengthens

0

Traders in the Ashanti Region have welcomed the directive by the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) to reduce the prices of goods in response to the appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

According to the traders, they are willing to adjust prices to reflect the strengthening of the local currency.

In an interview with Citi News on Monday, May 12, some wholesale shop owners indicated that while prices of certain goods have already been reduced, others remain unchanged, particularly those acquired on credit and yet to be paid for.

Some traders also lamented losses incurred after purchasing goods at higher prices, only to be compelled to sell them at reduced rates in line with current market expectations.
This development follows a statement from GUTA urging traders to adjust prices to align with the cedi’s improved performance.

Over the past few weeks, the Ghana cedi has appreciated significantly against the US dollar, boosting confidence among traders and consumers. Currently, the exchange rate stands at approximately GH₵13 to US$ 1.

“It is a right call, but most of the goods that we have now were bought at a high price, and there is nothing that we can do about it. But as the customers call for it, most of the prices have come down. As of last week, I bought oil for 720, but as of today, it has come down to 600.”

“The distributors themselves have not reduced the prices, so we are yet to receive the new stocks. So if we receive the new stocks and the prices have been reduced, we will also make some adjustments to the price. But some of the prices in our shops have been reduced,” they stated.

‘What have you done’? – Jude Dontoh shares reaction from mom after Met Gala buzz

Ghanaian designer, Jude Dontoh

Ghanaian designer Jude Dontoh has stated that he has been overwhelmed by support from Ghanaians after walking the red carpet with Lauryn Hill at the Met Gala on May 5, 2025.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Joseph Henry Mensah, the co-founder of the Ghanaian fashion brand ‘Tribe of God’ shared how his life changed overnight following the global spotlight that came with Lauryn Hill’s Met Gala debut.

Jude Dontoh revealed that his mother was confused by the sudden attention he received after the Met Gala, calling to ask if he had done something wrong.

Unfamiliar with the event, she had been sent multiple images of him, prompting him to explain it was simply a major fashion show.

“It’s overwhelming! My social media is buzzing, and all my family members keep calling me. My mom called me and didn’t know anything about the Met Gala. She kept asking, ‘What have you done?’ People have been sending her images of me, but I told her that I have done nothing; I just told her about the fashion show,” he said.

Jude Dontoh, whose design for Lauryn Hill featured rich African symbolism and jewelry made in Ghana, added that the support back home has been immense.

“My friends are happy for me, and a lot of people from Ghana are showing their support. I am making advancement in the entertainment industry,” he said.

Commonwealth Lawyers Monitor Chief Justice  Suspension

0

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

The Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) have expressed concern about the recent suspension from office of the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

While acknowledging the position of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) on the matter, “the CLA stress that the grounds on which judges may be removed from office and the process for removal should be clearly discernible from the legal framework under which they serve,” adding that “…we support an independent, impartial, honest and competent judiciary and recognise that an independent, effective and competent legal system is integral to upholding the rule of law, engendering public confidence and dispensing justice.”

Removal or suspension from office is a very serious form of judicial accountability, the CLA stated, pointing out that “The Latimer

House Principles declare that judges ‘should be subject to suspension or removal only for reasons of incapacity or misbehaviour that clearly renders them unfit to discharge their duties’.”

While the bar for the removal (and suspension) of judges is set high, according to the CLA, it notes that the “The Appointment, Tenure and Removal of Judges under Commonwealth Principles; A Compendium and Analysis of Best Practice. (“the Compendium”) provides a comprehensive review of the principles and standards that should apply in the removal and suspension of judges and the processes which should be undertaken according to the CLA.”

The Compendium is commended to the authorities and to all persons in Ghana who are involved in this matter, said the Commonwealth lawyers association.

On the Compendium, the CLA “notes that judges should not be vulnerable to removal for errors which are not of their own making but may be caused by systemic factors such as excessive caseloads or inadequate administrative support. Where there is an expectation of standards of conduct, for example in a Judicial Code, the Compendium notes that not every breach of a Code will be sufficiently serious to warrant removing a judge from office.”

Suspension of a judge raises important issues for the rule of law, and while there may be reasons for suspending a judge, the CLA observes that “on the other hand, there is the risk that the power to suspend a judge may be abused to penalise or intimidate independent-minded judges and to prevent them from deciding cases.”

The CLA urges all parties involved in the process in Ghana to be mindful of the Commonwealth Charter, Latimer Houses Principles, the UN Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary and to be informed by the Compendium.

The CLA also exhorts that accepted principles and standards in Administrative Law for the conduct of the process be adhered to.

The CLA expresses the hope that all parties involved in the matter will act reasonably and proportionally bearing in mind the comments of the Privy Council in the Chief Justice of Gibraltar case.

The CLA will continue to monitor the matter and maintain contact with the GBA to be informed of the progress of the matter, it added.

The Commonwealth Lawyers Association is an international non-profit organisation which exists to promote and maintain the rule of law throughout the Commonwealth by ensuring that an independent and efficient legal profession, with the highest standards of ethics and integrity, serves the people of the Commonwealth.

‘Icon’ Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs ‘had inner circle who helped him commit crime after crime’

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs appeared in court to start off his eight-week long trial as the music mogul faced the first day of jury selection in his sex trafficking trial

Jury selection is set to begin May 5, 2025, in the blockbuster trial of Combs, the music mogul whose star fell dramatically following his incarceration on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Combs, 55, has been awaiting trial since last fall on accusations of leading a crime ring that prosecutors say perpetrated systemic sexual abuse and coerced victims into drug-fueled sex parties using threats and violence. Sean Combs’ trial has begun

Disgraced rapper Sean Combs, aka P Diddy, had an ‘inner circle’ who helped him commit ‘crime after crime’ prosecutors have said.

Diddy is standing in court at the beginning of his eight week trial, which began this afternoon (Monday May 12). Combs faces charges including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution. The 55-year-old denies all the claims against him.

He has been detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his arrest in September. Prosecutors today claimed that the rapper acted in a dangerous ring of criminals.

Prosecutor Emily Johnson said: “To the public he was Puff Daddy or Diddy. A cultural icon. A businessman. Larger than life.

“But there was another side to him. A side that ran a criminal enterprise. During this trial you are going to hear about 20 years of the defendant’s crimes.

“But he didn’t do it alone. He had an inner circle of bodyguards and high-ranking employees who helped him commit crimes and cover them up.”

“Together, the group worked to promote the defendant’s power. They carefully cultivated and guarded his reputation,” she added.

The rapper’s mother, Janice, also arrived at the courthouse

“He called himself the king and expected to be treated like one,” Johnson added. “He expected his inner circle to cater to his every desire including his sexual desire. And his inner circle made sure he got everything he wanted.”

Johnson claimed resources from his businesses were used to sexually exploit multiple women, including by forcing them to have sex with male escorts while he watched.

She told the court about a moment when he suspected that his longtime girlfriend was cheating on him. The rapper allegedly kidnapped one of his employees to help him find her. And when he found her, she said, he “beat her brutally, kicking her in the back and flinging her around like a rag doll.”

Diddy has been accused of drugging and abusing victims during drug-fuelled sex parties dubbed “freak offs”. According to court, other men were also involved in this criminal operation.

Today, Diddy’s family members were pictured entering the court room ahead of his appearance. They included Janice Combs, the rapper’s mother, as well as two of his children, Chance Combs, 19, and D’Lila Combs, 18.

His son Justin Combs, 31, was also in attendance. Some attendees donned hats branded with Diddy’s stage name Puff.

JoyNews, German Embassy to launch maiden edition of climate talks, championing clean cooking in Ghana

0

JoyNews, in partnership with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ghana, is set to host the premier edition of Climate Talks, a community-driven initiative aimed at promoting sustainable solutions to climate change, with a specific focus on clean cooking.

The maiden event, scheduled for May 15, 2025, at the James Town Methodist Church, will spotlight Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Climate Change Agenda 2030. This first conversation will centre on clean cooking practices, healthier lifestyles, and the promotion of environmentally friendly cooking alternatives.

Currently, over 53% of Ghanaian households rely on traditional fuels like firewood and charcoal methods that not only harm the environment but also expose users, particularly women and children, to dangerous levels of indoor air pollution. The adoption of cleaner alternatives stands to significantly reduce health risks and improve environmental sustainability.

Speaking ahead of the event on JoyFM and JoyNews, German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, underscored the urgency of climate action and the importance of media partnerships in driving awareness on clean cooking.

“We want to collaborate with the media to elevate this conversation, not just for Ghana but for the global community. The aim is to create a platform where affected individuals, experts, and decision-makers can come together, exchange ideas, and set ambitious but achievable climate targets,” he said.

The Ambassador also stressed the importance of private sector responsibility, particularly in high-emission sectors like cement and mining, and warned against the importation of outdated, climate-damaging technologies.

“Some products are dumped here because they’ve been banned elsewhere due to their environmental harm. Consumers must begin to question the sustainability of what they’re buying,” he cautioned.

As part of its support for Ghana’s green transition, the German Embassy is rolling out a number of initiatives, including the Government Goes Green programme, a €20 million fund aimed at enabling public institutions such as ministries, schools, and hospitals to install renewable energy systems. This is part of a broader Ghana-Germany cooperation portfolio currently valued at approximately €800 million.

Ambassador Daniel Krull also applauded JoyNews for its leadership in climate journalism.

“We are very encouraged by the commitment we see from JoyNews in tackling the climate crisis”, he added.

The Climate Talks event will be broadcast live at 10 a.m., with attendees encouraged to be seated by 9:30 a.m. Audiences can tune in on JoyNews and Asempa FM for full coverage. The theme for the maiden edition is “Climate Talks: Nationally Determined Contributions in Action.

Climate change is not just a global concern, it is a local emergency. From intensifying heatwaves to disappearing coastlines, its impact is already being felt in Ghana. Yet with every challenge comes an opportunity. Climate Talks marks a crucial step toward fostering a greener, more resilient future for all.

The TGMA red carpet feels like Makola – Charlie Dior

Ghanaian fashion stylist and influencer, Charlie Dior Ghanaian fashion stylist and influencer, Charlie Dior

Ghanaian fashion stylist and influencer Charlie Dior has criticised the red-carpet experience at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), describing it as chaotic and poorly organised.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Joseph Henry Mensah, the fashion influencer did not hold back in comparing the red carpet to a bustling Ghanaian marketplace.

“The red carpet has been so chaotic, and you don’t even have to be there to know, it’s obvious. Compared to other red carpets I’ve been to, it lacks structure,” he said.

Charlie Dior drawing from his experiences at major international events like New York Fashion Week and witnessing how red carpets are handled at events like the Met Gala, he said Ghana’s version falls far behind in terms of coordination.

“I have been to New York Fashion Week and I’ve passed by where the Met Gala is hosted. I see how they run these red carpets. Comparing them to Ghana, it seems like Makola, it seems like Kaneshie, Kaneshie is sometimes even more organised than the way they run the red carpet in Ghana,” he noted.

He also praised this year’s attempt by organisers of the TGMA to introduce some order by limiting red carpet access to invited guests only, in his view, it could help restore prestige and structure to the pre-event showcase.

“I was happy when I saw in the news that this year’s event was going to be an invite-only appearance on the red carpet,” he added.

Strike out case against Ernest Addison on cedi depreciation

0

Dr Ernest Addison is the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Ernest Addison is the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has filed a motion requesting the Accra High Court to strike out a lawsuit brought against the former Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, and the central bank itself.

This comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by Balbir Violet Allan, a resident of Adabraka, accusing the former governor and the Bank of Ghana of gross negligence in the country’s currency management, according to Graphic Online.

The motion, which is scheduled to be moved by counsel for the Bank of Ghana, being the first defendant on Thursday, May 15, 2025, also states that the application constitutes an abuse of the court’s process, as outlined in the accompanying affidavit, and seeks any other orders the court may consider appropriate.

Dr Addison however, is the second defendant in the lawsuit.

Background

In her lawsuit against the Bank of Ghana, the plaintiff, Violet Allan, stated that the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate surged significantly from GH¢4.26 to $1 in February 2017, when Dr Addison assumed office as Governor, to GH¢15.49 to $1 by February 2025, when he proceeded on terminal leave, representing a depreciation of approximately 264 percent.

Graphic further reports that the plaintiff attributes her losses on investments in government treasuries, particularly ESLA Bonds, to the cedi’s depreciation, which she emphasises has significantly eroded its purchasing power and overall value.

In the suit, filed by her lawyer John E. Baiden of The Liberty Institute Law Firm, the plaintiff argues that although the law mandates the Bank of Ghana, through its Governor, to ensure a stable national currency, the second defendant allegedly opted to let the value of the cedi be dictated solely by market forces — such as demand and supply in the foreign exchange (forex) markets — resulting in instability and volatility.

Violet Allan maintains that the former governor, Dr Addison, allegedly failed to develop or implement any credible plan, in line with the law, to stabilise the currency.

“The second defendant has so controlled and conducted the affairs of the first defendant in a manner that extensive harm has befallen the cedi, including that of the plaintiff’s, as the dictates of justice would justify the legal mandate of the 1st defendant are made coterminous with the mandate of the second defendant who is not only the Governor but Chairperson of the first defendant’s Board and its Monetary Policy Committee,” the writ stated.

The plaintiff indicated that she formally notified the former Governor on May 30, 2024, of her intention to sue if no efforts were made to restore the cedi’s stability and value. However, as no remedial action was taken, she proceeded with the current legal action.

Among the reliefs she is seeking are a declaration that the second defendant, Dr Addison, was negligent in the management of the cedi, as well as a declaration that the losses she incurred due to the exchange rate fluctuations are enforceable against both defendants, jointly and severally.

Ghana vs Egypt (U-20 AFCON)

0

Players of the Black Satellites Players of the Black Satellites

Ghana’s Black Satellites are bracing themselves for a decisive clash against host nation, Egypt, in the quarter-finals of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday, May 12, 2025, a match that carries not just the weight of progression but also the golden ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Having topped their group unbeaten with 7 points from three games, including two clean sheets and only one goal conceded, the Black Satellites arrive at the knockout stage in strong form and high spirits.

Their defensive solidity and tactical discipline have been key to their success so far, and head coach Desmond Ofei is hopeful his side can rise to the occasion once more.

Ahead of the massive encounter, Coach Desmond Ofei set the tone in a bold and passionate press conference.

“This is going to be like a final for us. It’s a qualifier to the World Cup, and that means everything. We are not just playing a nation; we are also playing against history,” he said.

The match will mark Ghana’s opportunity to return to the U-20 World Cup for the first time since 2015; a goal that has served as a strong motivating force within the squad.

A win today would seal Ghana’s return to the U-20 World Cup for the first time since 2015.

There’s a major boost for the Black Satellites: Jerry Afriyie returns to the starting XI after rejoining the squad from club duty. His pace and flair could prove crucial against a physical Egyptian side.

Also starting is Dacosta Antwi, the standout defender who was recently named in the group stage Best XI.

With Gidios Aseako in goal, and the reliable back four of Antwi, Aaron Essel, McCarthy Ofori, and Adjabeng providing cover, Ghana will look to maintain their defensive stability.

In midfield, Abdul Aziz Issah will dictate play, while Lord Afrifa and Afriyie lead the attacking threat.

Egypt, meanwhile, progressed as one of the best third-placed teams despite a somewhat inconsistent group stage campaign.

The hosts also secured 7 points but lost to Sierra Leone in their second group game, a result that exposed some vulnerabilities in their setup.

Nevertheless, with home support and high expectations, Egypt remain a formidable opponent.

Burkina Faso military accused of killing over 100 civilians in ‘massacre’

0

Militant attacks persist in Burkina Faso despite military promises to act Militant attacks persist in Burkina Faso despite military promises to act

At least 130 civilians were killed by Burkina Faso government forces and allied militia in March near the western town of Solenzo, Human Rights Watch (HRW) says in a new report.

It says the “massacre”, following an operation led by Burkinabè special forces, resulted in widespread civilian deaths and displacement of ethnic Fulanis.

The Fulani are a pastoralist, largely Muslim community who the government has often accused of backing Islamist militants – an allegation denied by community leaders.

About 40% of Burkina Faso is under the control of groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State operating in West Africa’s Sahel region.

The attacks, in which thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced, have continued despite promises by the country’s military leaders to deal with the insurgency.

Ahead of the release of the HRW findings on Monday, there were reports of more militant attacks over the weekend with dozens of military and civilian casualties.

The BBC has not been able to confirm these reports and the authorities do not routinely comment on reported jihadist attacks.

The BBC has approached the Burkina Faso government for comment on the HRW report.

Last year, the government described as “baseless” another HRW report that had accused soldiers of a “massacre” in which 223 villagers were killed.

It also said that any allegations of human rights abuses committed “in the fight against terrorism” were systematically investigated.

The rights group says it interviewed witnesses, militia members, journalists and the civil society and analysed videos shared on social media to make the findings regarding the army’s involvement in the March killings.

HRW previously said the army was “implicated” in the killings, based on videos that were being shared online showing dozens of dead and injured people, although the findings were not definitive.

It now says further research has “uncovered that Burkina Faso’s military was responsible for these mass killings of Fulani civilians”.

It adds that least 100 more civilians were killed last month in reprisal attacks by jihadist groups against those seen as helping the military.

“Mass killings of civilians by government security forces, militias, and Islamist armed groups amount to war crimes and other possible atrocity crimes,” it says.

The rights group has urged the government to investigate and prosecute all those responsible for the crimes.

This came as junta leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré returned from Moscow after a Friday meeting with Vladimir Putin on cooperation and security in the Sahel.

Since the military seized power, Burkina Faso has turned away from colonial power France and towards Russia for help in tackling the Islamist insurgency.

Atsiame Dukor responds to Togbui Dorglo’s Akatsi speech; rejects claims

0

The traditional leadership of Atsiame Dukor has firmly rebutted claims made by Togbui Dorglo Anumah VI, Paramount Chief and President of the Avenor Traditional Council, during an emergency meeting held at the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly Hall on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

At a press conference organised at the chief’s palace of Dagbamete in response to Togbui Dorglo’s remarks, Torgbui Ablormetsi Kasu III, Dufia of Kpota-Koryi, speaking on behalf of Torgbuiga Samlafo IV and the Chiefs and people of Atsiame Traditional Area, described the statements by Togbui Dorglo as “lawless,” “dishonest,” and a distortion of the facts surrounding the elevation of Torgbuiga Samlafo IV to Paramountcy.

Elevation Process Backed by Due Process

According to the Atsiame leadership, Torgbuiga Samlafo IV’s elevation followed all constitutional and statutory processes.

He was nominated and endorsed as Asafohenega (Fiaga) and First War Captain by the Overlord of Anlo, Togbui Sri III, with the full backing of other chiefs, including Togbui Dorglo himself at the time.

Key documents, including a Chieftaincy Declaration (CD) form and an elevation letter were duly submitted to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs. Upon validation of the authenticity and completeness of these documents, the Regional House forwarded them to the National House of Chiefs, which then formed a three-member subcommittee to investigate and advise on the matter.

The press conference referenced:

  • CD Form Filing – January 6, 2016

  • Petition for Recognition – January 28, 2022

  • National House of Chiefs Meeting – June 19, 2024, where Atsiame’s elevation was discussed in Togbui Dorglo’s presence

  • Invitation to Torgbuiga Samlafo IV – Letter dated April 24, 2025

Doe Adjaho’s Role Politicised Unfairly

The Atsiame Traditional Authority categorically rejected Togbui Dorglo’s insinuation that the former Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho manipulated the process. “From 2017 to 2024, Rt. Hon. Adjaho was in opposition. How could he influence chieftaincy proceedings under a government he did not belong to?” the statement asked.

The press conference emphasised that it was rather Togbui Dorglo who was playing politics by calling on former President John Mahama to interfere in a matter constitutionally reserved for traditional leadership.

Article 272 (a) and the Role of Chiefs

Quoting Article 272 (a) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the Atsiame leadership reminded Togbui Dorglo that chieftaincy issues are the sole preserve of traditional authorities and not politicians. They further highlighted that the National House of Chiefs, not any individual chief, has the mandate to recognise and elevate traditional leaders.

Historical and Cultural Ties

Addressing the contentious claim about Avenor’s independence from Anlo, the statement challenged Togbui Dorglo’s credibility. “Only the most dishonest person can claim that Avenor has not been part of Anlo,” it declared. It further pointed out that Togbui Dorglo himself filed his gazette forms through the Anlo Traditional Council and paid homage to the Awoamefia, a gesture acknowledging the Awoamefia’s authority.

The statement accused Togbui Dorglo of conveniently denying this reality now that the elevation of Torgbuiga Samlafo IV threatens his influence.

Challenging Togbui Dorglo’s Legitimacy

The press conference also questioned the very basis of Togbui Dorglo’s stool, posing several historical and genealogical questions:

  • Who was Dorglo Kohi in the 1911 Gold Coast Chiefs List?

  • Why did the name change to Dorglo Anumah in later records?

  • Why are the Kohi family members in court with him?

  • What wars did his predecessors fight?

  • What is the nature of his stool?

These, the Atsiame leadership claimed, expose a “stoolless” claim to chieftaincy on the part of Togbui Dorglo, and portray him as a usurper.

Addressing Legal Challenges and Petitions

The press conference revealed that all petitions raised by Togbui Dorglo and others, such as the Amegavieso Council of Elders, have been responded to in detail and found lacking by both the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and the National House.

“We have followed the due process from Anlo to Ho to Kumasi. At each level, Torgbuiga Samlafo IV has cleared every hurdle with credible documentation and responses,” the statement added.

Final Remarks: Caution Against Politicization

In closing, the chiefs of Atsiame condemned what they termed the “lawless” speech by Togbui Dorglo at the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly Hall. They insisted that traditional disputes must be handled within the framework of the Constitution and Chieftaincy Act 2008 (Act 759), without political interference.

“Torgbui Dorglo must go to Kumasi and present his case—if he has any—not to deceive the good people of Avenor in Akatsi,” the statement concluded.

The event was addressed by Torgbui Ablormetsi Kasu III, on behalf of Torgbuiga Samlafo IV, the chiefs, and the people of Atsiame Traditional Area.

Dollar gift saga: ‘I feel sorry for Sammy Gyamfi’ – Dr Kabiru Mahama

0

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr Tiah Abdul Kabiru Mahama, has expressed personal regret over the involvement of the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, in the recent controversy about the gifting of dollars to self-styled evangelist, Patricia Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The (GoldBod) CEO was caught on camera doling out several notes of dollars to the self-styled evangelist.

The incident has received widespread condemnation, with Sammy Gyamfi apologising for his action. Nonetheless, he has since been summoned by the Chief of Staff over the matter.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse Show on Monday, May 12, Dr Mahama said he felt genuinely sorry for Mr Gyamfi, whom he described as a “young person” with promise.

While he stressed that he holds no personal grudge against the NDC figure, he was firm in his belief that legal standards must be upheld, regardless of one’s status or age.

“As a person, I feel sorry for Sammy Gyamfi, a young person. I would have loved that he didn’t get himself involved in this,” Dr Mahama stated. “With all sincerity, I have no issue whatsoever against him. But the law is the law.”

The Minority caucus in Parliament, of which Dr Kabiru Mahama is a member, is demanding tough actions from President John Mahama against Sammy Gyamfi.

Addressing journalists in Parliament, a member of the Finance Committee, Dr Kabiru Tia Mahama, described Sammy Gyamfi’s conduct as financial recklessness and shameful arrogance.

“Suddenly encapsulates the arrogance, hypocrisy, and gross insensitivity that have come to define the NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama,” he said.

Dr Mahama expressed outrage over the government’s handling of financial matters, labelling it a direct affront to citizens who are already facing the crippling effects of inflation and an ever-increasing cost of living.

AfCFTA, investment reforms and policy alignment top agenda at 2025 Africa CEO Forum

0

Over 2,800 political and business leaders from across 90 countries have gathered in Abidjan for the 2025 Africa CEO Forum to discuss strategies for accelerating investment reforms, deepening the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) implementation and aligning policy to unlock the private sector potential of the continent.

Co-hosted by Jeune Afrique Media Group and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the 12th edition of the premier business summit of the May 12-13 Forum opens under the theme: “Can a New Deal Between State and Private Sector Deliver the Continent a Winning Hand?”

The Forum comes at a time when African economies are grappling with rising debt servicing costs, slowing donor inflows and a shifting global trade environment.

It is against this backdrop that continent leaders are pressing for more coordinated policy frameworks to reduce investment risk, improve governance to drive regional integration.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara underscored the urgency of leveraging trade through the AfCFTA, calling for continued efforts in raw material processing and regulatory harmonisation.

““The world is undergoing profound upheavals and major shifts in the geopolitical, economic, and financial spheres. Despite this uncertain context, Côte d’Ivoire is showing strong, sustained growth thanks to a sound macro‑economic framework underpinned by significant private‑sector investment.”

“We must now work to strengthen intra‑African trade by continuing our efforts to process our raw materials and by accelerating the implementation of the AfCFTA. I hope that this edition of the Africa CEO Forum will be a moment of truth and commitment, enabling us to design concrete and ambitious solutions together.”,” he said.

Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation. (IFC) Makhtar Diop urged greater mobilisation for private capital to tackle job creation and infrastructure gaps.

“Africa’s potential is immense, as is its diversity. Yet it remains largely untapped; from natural resources to infrastructure, from technology to human capital. To realize this potential, we must mobilize private capital towards a competitive and productive Africa that can create massive jobs and inspire the rest of the world. It is in order to achieve this objective and meet the aspirations of young people that we urgently need a new deal between companies and public decision-makers,” he said.

This agenda this year centers on three pillars: improving governance and transparency, aligning industrial and regulatory policy with business realities, and fast-tracking AfCFTA to create a unified market that lowers operational costs and nurtures regional champions.

Amir Ben Yahmed, CEO of Jeune Afrique Media Group, said:

“After two decades of growth, Africa is once again facing challenges we thought were behind us, especially the ballooning debt crisis. Of course, global conditions have deteriorated sharply, but we believe the core issue lies in the quality of public policy and economic governance in our countries. With this ‘New Deal’, we want to bring this issue back to the forefront. Africa must develop its capacity to engage with the private sector and empower it to drive growth. This is essential for regaining a favorable position in the new international environment.”

Among key participants are more than 900 CEOs, top institutional investors, and over 10 heads of state and government, including the presidents of South Africa, Senegal, Rwanda, Mauritania, and the prime ministers of Guinea, Tanzania  and Cameroon.

On Tuesday May 13, a landmark policy debate between candidates vying to lead the African Development Bank (AfDB) is scheduled as a headline event to shape the economic direction of the continent.

Jude Bellingham is reportedly set to have shoulder surgery this summer after playing through pain for the last 18 months.

The Real Madrid midfielder has been suffering with a shoulder problem since falling awkwardly and dislocating it during a LaLiga match against Rayo Vallecano in November 2023.

The 21-year-old was subsequently ruled out of two Madrid matches and also missed England’s final Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Bellingham has delayed going under the knife and been forced to play with his shoulder heavily strapped to prevent extra injury.

He is finally set to undergo surgery this summer, according to Marca, who say ‘everything points to Bellingham having surgery on his shoulder’ at the end of the season.

A muscle injury to his lower right leg in pre-season kept the midfielder out of four matches in August and September, but he chose to avoid shoulder surgery last summer.

Surgery could see Bellingham miss out on next month’s Club World Cup.

Los Blancos face Al-Hilal, Red Bull Salzburg and Pachuca in their opening fixtures as they look to secure a prize of up to £97m for winning the competition.

Bellingham has faced criticism from Madrid fans in recent weeks after suffering a slump in form.

‘Palpable falsehood’ – Lawyers dismiss land grab allegations against Dr Randy Abbey, Richard Jakpa

0

Dr Randy Abbey and Richard Jakpa have been mentioned at the center of this matter Dr Randy Abbey and Richard Jakpa have been mentioned at the center of this matter

Lawyers for the owners of a disputed parcel of land at Tse Addo in Accra have dismissed media reports alleging that COCOBOD Chief Executive Officer, Dr Randy Abbey; and National Security operative, Richard Jakpa, forcibly seized private property under construction.

In a rejoinder signed by Kuenyehia and Nutsukpui, lawyers for Comfort Adjeley Odamtten, Salomey Adjeley Odamtten, and Kai Odamtten, the claims were described as ‘a palpable falsehood and gross misinformation.’

It stated that; “The said publication… sought to put out a totally false narrative of events concerning our clients’ parcel of land and the circumstances under which officers of the National Security Secretariat and Dr Randy Abbey had to step in to save our clients from being unlawfully and blatantly dispossessed of their land.”

The lawyers explained that the land, a 0.20-acre parcel located behind the Ghana International Trade Fair Center, was inherited from the late E K Odamtten and has been in the family’s undisputed possession for over 22 years.

A two-bedroom home had been built on it, which was demolished in February this year, it added.

“Poppy Osman, in the company of some hardened land-guards armed with sophisticated weapons, besieged our clients’ property at around 2 AM, forcibly evicted them and their infant children, and demolished their residence on the land with total impunity,” it added.

The lawyers further claimed Osman began constructing a 12-storey building on the site, damaging nearby properties, including that of Dr Abbey.

Despite lodging complaints with the La Police and the Property Fraud Unit at the CID Headquarters, the family reportedly received no help.

A letter from the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly dated April 28, 2025, confirmed no permit had been issued for the construction and that a “Stop Work” notice had been served on Osman.

“In their frustration and haplessness, our clients petitioned the National Security Secretariat to come to their aid. The National Security Secretariat approached Poppy Osman to provide his permits and other title deeds… [but he] obviously failed to provide any supporting documents,” it added.

According to the lawyers, a National Security team led by Richard Jakpa was deployed on May 9, 2025, to halt the illegal work and prevent further damage.

“It is therefore a palpable falsehood… to claim that officers of National Security engaged in some illegal acts. They have rather restored peace and order on our clients’ parcel of land,” Bosompem added.

It further noted that Dr Abbey never misused state power.

“It is absolutely not true that Dr Randy Abbey has used National Security to intimidate or abuse the property rights of any of his neighbours in the area. On the contrary, he was also a victim of the damaging effects of the blatant illegal construction works by Poppy Osman,” it added.

Benedicta Gyamfiwaa’s Daring TGMAs Outfit Ignites Social Media Debate

News Hub Creator21h

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) red carpet witnessed a bold fashion statement from media personality Benedicta Gyamfiwaa, sparking intense reactions online. Her figure-hugging gown, featuring a deep plunging neckline and eye-catching silver embellishments, drew both admiration and criticism. The dramatic oversized sleeves added a high-fashion touch, but it was the revealing cut of the dress that dominated discussions, with many questioning its appropriateness for the event.

Social media users were sharply divided, with some applauding her confidence and others condemning the outfit as overly provocative. Descriptions like “oiled melons and raw thighs” trended as critics argued the look clashed with Ghanaian cultural expectations of modesty. Meanwhile, defenders praised her for challenging norms and embracing body positivity, reigniting the broader conversation about fashion freedom versus tradition in African entertainment spaces.

Fashion commentators acknowledged that Benedicta’s choice was undeniably attention-grabbing, blending contemporary glamour with avant-garde elements. While polarizing, the ensemble succeeded in making her stand out among the night’s attendees. Analysts noted that such bold choices often redefine red-carpet standards, even as they attract backlash, highlighting the fine line between innovation and controversy in celebrity style.

Regardless of the mixed reactions, Benedicta Gyamfiwaa’s TGMAs appearance has cemented her status as a fearless trendsetter. The heated discourse around her outfit underscores the power of fashion to provoke dialogue, proving that in today’s entertainment industry, making waves—whether praised or panned—can be just as impactful as winning awards. The conversation continues, with her look set to be a reference point in future debates about celebrity fashion in Ghana.

Ghana’s development is a shared responsibility – NCCE

0

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu

Kadjebi (O/R), May 12, GNA – Ms. Janet Yaa Obido, an Assistant Civic Education Officer with the Kadjebi District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on the citizenry to participate fully in Ghana’s development.

She emphasised that development is a shared responsibility.

She stated that every action, whether small or large, contributes to national development and that if we all rise to the challenges with commitment and action, we can build a nation, grounded in peace that offers hope, opportunity and a better life for every Ghanaian.

Ms. Obido made these remarks while addressing some seamstress and hairdressing apprentices in Kadjebi in the Oti Region.

The engagement formed part of the Commission’s activities in marking the 2025 Constitution Week celebration, a flagship programme of the Commission.

She said that Ghana’s progress will not come solely through big policies or foreign investments, rather, through citizens seeing themselves as nation-builders and that this can be achieved when citizens obey laws, protect public property, safeguard the environment, uphold justice, and foster peaceful co-existence.

Ms. Obido stated that these values, when embraced by individuals and communities, formed the moral and social foundation needed to secure Ghana’s long-term success.

She charged the apprentices to care for the environment by avoiding littering, supporting reforestation and conserving water and energy.

Madam Alberta Humado, Proprietress Ahafia Beauty Parlor, Kadjebi, commended the NCCE Officer for the insightful education and pledged to convey the message to other mistresses.

The Constitution Week Celebration is one of the flagship programmes of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). The Week was instituted in 2001 to commemorate the country’s return to constitutional democratic rule.

Significantly, April 28, 1992, was the day the Ghanaian electorate voted favourably in a referendum that adopted the draft Fourth Republican Constitution which subsequently came into full force on 7th January 1993.

This year’s activity is marked under the theme: “Ghana’s Future: Our Collective Responsibility”.

Asset declaration law must be reviewed

0

The Programme Officer at the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, Samuel Harrison-Cudjoe, has called for a comprehensive review of the country’s asset declaration and liability law to strengthen efforts in combating corruption.

Speaking at a one-day workshop in Sunyani on Monday, May 12, on strategies to fight corruption, organised by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition for civil society groups and other stakeholders, Harrison-Cudjoe emphasised the need to introduce more stringent measures into the existing law.

He explained that the current framework lacks key components such as verification and monitoring mechanisms, which significantly weaken its effectiveness.

“We are asking for a total review of Ghana’s asset declaration and liability law. We feel the law has deficiencies that do not allow us to properly fight corruption,” he stated.

He continued, “The law lacks a verification angle, where we can check whether people have indeed declared the assets they claim to own. It also lacks a monitoring angle and does not allow us to publish the declared assets so that citizens can know what our political leaders have. We believe that if this is not addressed, it makes it easy for people who come into public office with negative intentions to misuse public funds and enrich themselves.”

Samuel Harrison-Cudjoe further stressed that there should be strict sanctions for public officials who fail to declare their assets or who deliberately provide false information.

According to him, such reforms are crucial if Ghana is to make meaningful progress in its fight against corruption.

Environment Rehabilitation Officer to spend 20 years behind bars over defilement

By Erica Apeatua Addo

Tarkwa (W/R), May 12, GNA – The Circuit Court in Tarkwa has sentenced an environment rehabilitation officer to 20 year’s imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 10-year -old girl at Brahabebome in the Western Region.

Charles Amankwah, 26, who was charged with two counts of having sex through the vagina and anus of the victim, pleaded not guilty.

After the full trial, the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu, found Amankwah guilty of the crime and sentenced him to 10 years in prison on each count.

The sentences were, however, to run consecutively.

The prosecution, led by Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor, told the court that the complainant is the mother of the victim, and they resided in Brahabebome.

According to him, Amankwah had a good relationship with the complainant and the victim because they lived in the same house.

He said the accused took advantage of the friendship between them and since 2023, he started having vagina and anal sex with the victim when she was 9-year-old and in Primary Four without the complainant’s knowledge.

Prosecution told the court that Amankwah had sex with the victim multiple times in his room, especially when the complainant was away from home.

Chief Superintendent Odonkor explained that on June 16, 2024, a concerned citizen informed the complainant about the incident, and when she interrogated the victim, she confirmed it.

The victim said she used to go to Amankwah’s room because he assisted her with her homework.

She said after completing the homework, the convict assaulted her sexually, gave her coke, and warned her not to disclose the act to anyone.

According to the victim, when she resisted the first day, Amankwah threatened not to help her anymore with her homework, and therefore, she gave in, and he promised to always offer her assistance.

The prosecutor said the complainant reported the matter to the Western Central Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit in Tarkwa and Amankwah was picked up for interrogation.

He said a medical report form was issued to her on behalf of the victim for examination and report.

The court heard that due to complications, a surgery was performed on the victim’s anus, and after that the form was endorsed by a medical officer and it was returned to the police.

‘Leave Sammy Gyamfi alone, he didn’t steal’

Ghanaian comedian, DKB has jumped to the defense of Sammy Gyamfi Ghanaian comedian, DKB has jumped to the defense of Sammy Gyamfi

Ghanaian comedian, DKB, has called on critics to refrain from lambasting the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over a viral video in which he was seen handing dollar bills to Agradaa.

In a video shared on X on May 12, 2025, DKB noted that the politician didn’t do anything wrong in gifting Agradaa.

He emphasised that public officeholders have done worst things while in power, yet they were not held accountable for their actions, therefore, netizens criticising the politician should cut him some slack.

“Cut Sammy Gyamfi some slack. He didn’t go and steal or do anything bad. He was just gifting, moreover, he had no bad intentions. In fact, people who have done worse things in this country are walking free and enjoying their peace of mind,” he said.

He further argued that much of the criticisms directed at Sammy Gyamfi stem from the fact that the money was given to Nana Agradaa, an individual widely perceived as living an opulent lifestyle and known for making disparaging remarks about the president, which has further fueled public disapproval of Gyamfi’s actions.

“The main reason people are angry is not because Sammy gave the dollar to anybody. It is because it was Agradaa and the fact that he associated with her. We were here and witnessed what she did to John Mahama’s name, desecrating it and saying stuffs like ‘he wasn’t coming to power’ and all those negative stuffs so it hurts the NDC people to see Sammy Gyamfi giving money out to such a person,” he added.

The comedian also weighed in on the controversy, suggesting that the public outrage and criticisms surrounding the issue would not have been as intense if the recipient of the money had been someone other than Agradaa.

Award-winning Afropop star KiDi has opened up about the emotional toll of online criticism, describing internet trolls as “sad people” projecting their own unhappiness onto others.

In a conversation on the podcast, the hitmaker shared his perspective on dealing with backlash, emphasizing that much of the negativity stems from people struggling with their own lives.

“Once I began to understand that I’ll never please everybody, life became easier,” KiDi told host Derick Elorm Ashilevi.

“Even if I give someone 1 million, they’ll ask why it wasn’t 2 million. Some people are just unhappy, they hate themselves and project that onto others.”

“There are people out there who will come onto social media and say something to you—it’s not personal. They woke up this morning, they’ve not eaten. You come and post, ‘Hey, stream my music,’ and they’ll respond, ‘Look at this kwasia, why should I stream your music?’ It’s not personal. He’s angry inside about something happening in his personal life and is just projecting it onto me.

“It’s not personal,” he added. “They’re angry about their own lives and take it out on you.”

Reduce land registration to 30 days, decentralise process – Lands Minister to Board

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has charged the reconstituted 23-member Western Regional Lands Commission Board to work to reduce the land registration processes to just 30 working days and take steps to decentralise the registration processes to encourage and attract more people to seek the appropriate registration of lands.

The Minister, who made the call when he inaugurated a 23-member Western Regional Lands Commission Board in Sekondi, said he does not see why everyone must travel to the regional office just to complete the land registration process, and therefore urged the members to use their expertise to improve the processes.

“Reduce land registration turnaround time to 30 working days. Lower the cost of land services by making them accessible at the district level. Prevent the unlawful conversion of stool lands to family lands where it contradicts customary law. Combat encroachment on public lands, including open spaces, nature reserves, wetlands, and coastal areas. Ensure strict supervision of Lands Commission staff to uphold professionalism and high service standards“, he charged.

The Lands Minister, while commending the Board Members for their selection, urged them not to lose sight of the activities of galamseyers and land encroachers, but commit to work to discourage such misconduct.

“We cannot also lose sight of the galamsey menace. Alarmingly, many farmers and landowners are coerced into ceding their land for illegal mining. This has resulted in the wanton destruction of arable land and forest resources, as well as the pollution of major rivers like the Tano, Pra, and Ankobra. Such activities threaten human security and will not be tolerated.

“Given the Region’s vast resources, I am informed that the operations of unlicensed surveyors and estate agents are increasing. Additionally, encroachment on public lands-sometimes with the complicity of customary land claimants-creates tension between Government agencies and traditional authorities.

“There are also reports of unscrupulous sales of large agricultural tracts and coastal beachfronts for speculative purposes. These practices hinder progress and must cease. The Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036) introduces stringent punitive measures to address such misconduct.

” Considering these challenges, the Western Regional Lands Commission has an enormous task ahead. You must collaborate with all relevant Government agencies and landowners to implement practical solutions.“, he noted.

Joseph Nelson

By Article 258 of the 1992 Constitution and the Lands Commission Act, 2008 (Act 767), Emmmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah urged the Western Regional Lands Commission Board members to work to fulfil their mandate.

The story of connecting businesses to communities

0

On a warm, expectant evening in Accra, beneath glittering chandeliers and the weight of 20 years of memories, something rare unfolded — a celebration not just of a company, but of a journey stitched together by resilience, youthful ambition, bold risks, and relentless innovation. Billed as Hubtel’s 20th Anniversary Thanksgiving, the night quickly revealed itself to be more about a story than a milestone, brought to life by some of the country’s biggest gospel acts, including Joe Mettle, Piesie Esther, and Perez Music.

The Humble Beginnings: A Letter to God

The evening offered a deep moment of reflection for a company that has evolved from a startup to an industry leader in payment platforms and E-commerce.

Instead of a conventional CEO address, Hubtel’s co-founder and CEO, Alex Adjei Bram, read a deeply personal letter to God, recounting the twists and turns that led to Hubtel’s birth:

  • The painful rejection from medical school that felt like failure but turned into divine redirection.
  • The crushing political loss at university elections, which instead opened doors of leadership.
  • The courageous first steps after graduation, armed only with a printed business card, no investors, no office, and a burning belief.
  • The fragility of the early years, when faith was often the only currency.

As Bram spoke, the room fell silent, not out of politeness but reverence. Each word carried remembrance of lean times, small wins, overlooked miracles, and enduring friendships.

“We didn’t know what we were doing,” Bram admitted. “We only knew that as long as we stood for good and pursued love for our customers and mankind, You would be with us.”

Since then, Hubtel has moved through significant phases, first as the go-to bulk SMS platform for businesses, then transforming into the tech and payment giant it is today. Bram gave thanks for every door opened and closed, for early mentors, hard seasons, and a market that forced them to evolve. Above all, he thanked God for being present — not just in loud victories but in quiet, consistent provision.

A Reflection of Ghanaian Excellence

The evening also saw stirring remarks from the Minister for Communications, Digitalization, and Innovation, Sam George, a fellow alumnus of KNUST like Hubtel’s founders. He praised Hubtel’s story as a powerful reflection of Ghana’s potential.

“The Hubtel story highlights a major fact we should all be proud of as Ghanaians,” he said. “It speaks to the power of local innovation and proves that Ghanaian talent can compete at the highest levels. You don’t have to leave Ghana to achieve greatness.”

He lauded Hubtel’s pioneering work in messaging, payment systems, and E-commerce. “When Ghana needed ways for businesses to connect faster, Hubtel built it. When payments needed to be easier, Hubtel innovated. They have not just participated in Ghana’s digital transformation; they have led it.”

A Testament to Youthful Innovation

Minister for Youth Empowerment, George Opare Addo, emphasized that Hubtel’s success is a testament to what Ghanaian youth can achieve with foresight, opportunity, and resilience.

“This is not just a celebration of a company’s milestone; it is a celebration of what the Ghanaian youth can do,” he declared.

He highlighted that every young software engineer, marketer, and delivery partner at Hubtel stands as proof that innovation can create jobs and new possibilities. Opare Addo urged more private sector players to support the government’s “one million coders” program, aimed at equipping youth with vital digital skills.

“I want to challenge not just Hubtel but the entire private sector to invest heavily in digital skills development, mentorship, and entrepreneurship support. It is the surest way to empower our youth for a digitally competitive future.”

Quiet Strength in the Business World

Patience Akyeanu, Hubtel board member and chair of its audit committee, drew on her deep experience in banking and insurance to underscore Hubtel’s often unseen but critical role in Ghana’s digital economy.

“In banking and insurance, digital transformation has shifted from a luxury to a lifeline,” she said. “At the heart of Ghana’s digital evolution, Hubtel has consistently been a key player.”

Akyeanu praised Hubtel’s early recognition that technology would be the great enabler, investing ahead of trends to build platforms that empowered businesses to connect, transact, and build trust.

The Road Ahead: A Call to Courage

Throughout the night, one theme persisted: Hubtel’s journey is far from over. Artificial intelligence, big data, and emerging financial technologies will shape the next frontier. And with Hubtel’s history of bold reinvention, tireless learning, and deep commitment to Ghana, many believe they will not just adapt to the future — they will help shape it.

Ghana’s credit rating upgraded to CCC+ by S&P amid debt restructuring progress

0

The decision reflects Ghana’s recent progress in restructuring its outstanding commercial debt, particularly following the country’s successful Eurobond exchange programme in October 2024.

In its latest update, the United States-based ratings agency stated that the outlook for both Ghana’s foreign and local currency ratings remains stable. Additionally, the assessment of transferability and convertibility is also held at CCC+.

According to S&P, Ghana is nearing the final stages of negotiations to restructure debts owed to external lenders, including commercial banks. These efforts are a continuation of the government’s broader strategy to reduce its unsustainable debt levels and restore macroeconomic stability.

S&P noted: “Ghana has taken recent steps to restructure remaining commercial debt,” adding that these moves mark a significant milestone in its post-default recovery path.

The agency pointed to Ghana’s “supportive economic growth, ongoing fiscal reforms, and improved external position” as crucial factors that balance out ongoing challenges such as high debt servicing obligations and fiscal slippages typically seen during election years.

Ghana has experienced improvements in its external financial metrics, including a boost in foreign exchange reserves and stronger gold export revenues. Inflation, which currently stands at 21.2%, is on a downward trend, aided by a firming of the Ghanaian cedi and falling global energy prices.

Despite the positive trajectory, S&P issued a cautionary note about the country’s long-term debt sustainability. It highlighted that external debt comprises 62% of total government liabilities, which is equivalent to around 49% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

S&P warned that the nation’s fiscal health remains “highly vulnerable to exchange rate volatility and fluctuations in global commodity prices.”

Persistent challenges remain

Ghana continues to grapple with structural issues such as ineffective tax collection, periodic overspending—particularly around elections—and a high cost of servicing debt. These factors, while not derailing the recent credit rating upgrade, still pose significant risks to economic stability.

Tension as Annoh-Dompreh kept hostage during Nsawam-Adoagyiri MCE confirmation

0

Tensions flared at the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly as Member of Parliament Frank Annoh-Dompreh was effectively held hostage following a heated confirmation process for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee.

The chaos erupted after the MP attempted to assert his role as a polling agent during the voting process but was met with strong resistance from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Regional Organizer, David Dakudzi, and local police.

Prior to the polls, reports indicated that Annoh-Dompreh had vowed to block the confirmation of Philibert Fumey Selorm, the MCE nominee, who had previously challenged him in the 2024 parliamentary elections—a contest that ended up in court.

As tensions escalated inside the assembly hall, clashes broke out between supporters of the nominee and the MP, with the situation remaining volatile until the final vote was cast.

Following the voting, police officers formed a security cordon around the counting center where Electoral Commission officials tallied the ballots. The nominee secured confirmation with 29 out of 38 votes.

However, the announcement further enraged NDC supporters, who demanded that Annoh-Dompreh be released to them, shouting threats of retaliation. Police swiftly intervened, escorting the MP to the municipal NADMO office under heavy security as angry protesters gave chase.

The incident comes just weeks after a Koforidua High Court dismissed an election petition challenging Annoh-Dompreh’s 2024 parliamentary victory. The case, which sought to nullify his win, was struck out following a legal application filed by Gary Nimako Marfo, the New Patriotic Party’s Director of Legal Affairs.

The standoff highlights deepening political divisions in the constituency, raising concerns over future governance and security in the area.

2 Arrested In Twifo Praso Murder Case

The suspects

Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of 34-year-old Tahiru Zenabu at Kokoase, a suburb of Twifo Praso in the Central Region.

The suspects were arrested by the Central North Regional Police Command after one of them used the victim’s mobile phone to call a friend of the deceased.

The two, Richard Armah and Isaac Arhin have since been hauled before court and remanded into police custody to reappear on May 21, 2025, as investigations continue.

Zenabu was found dead in her room on April 3, 2025, with a cloth tied around her neck and blood stains on her hands, indicating a possible struggle before her death.

Following a month-long investigation, police made a breakthrough on May 5 when one of the suspects, Richard Armah, a mobile phone repairer and spinner residing in Twifo Aboabo, used the deceased’s phone to contact one of her friends.

The friend, recognising the phone number, immediately reported to the police.

Acting swiftly, police traced and arrested Richard Armah, who, during interrogation, mentioned Isaac Arhin as his accomplice.

Arhin was also arrested shortly afterward.

The deceased’s mobile phone has since been recovered and is now in police custody as evidence.

Meanwhile, the police have commended the community for their cooperation and the prompt action of the victim’s friend, which played a crucial role in tracking down the suspects.

Strike out suit against BoG and immediate paste Governor over cedi depreciation as there is no reasonable course of action

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has filed a motion at the High Court in Accra asking the court to strike out a suit filed by a Ghanaian retiree who has dragged the bank and its immediate past Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, to court, citing gross negligence in the management of the Ghana Cedi

According to the Bank of Ghana the pleadings by the plaintiff, does not disclose any reasonable cause of action.

The motion will be moved by counsel for the BoG on Thursdat May 15.

It is also the case of the the BoG that the application constitutes an abuse of the court’s process per the terms of the accompanying affidavit and for such orders as the court may deem fit.

In a writ filed at the Accra High Court, the plaintiff, Balbir Violet Allan, a resident of Adabraka, avers that when the Governor assumed office in February 2017, the cedi-dollar exchange rate was GH¢4.26 to $1.

However, by February 3, this year — when the Governor proceeded on terminal leave — the rate had surged to GH¢15.49 to $1, representing a depreciation of approximately 264 per cent.

The Bank of Ghana is the first defendant with Dr Ernest Addison, the immediate past Governor as the second defendant.

The plaintiff claims that the significant decline in the value of the cedi has caused substantial losses in the value and purchasing power of her investments in government treasuries, particularly ESLA Bonds.

In the suit, filed by lawyer for the plaintiff, John E. Baiden of The Liberty Institute Law Firm, the plaintiff argues that while the law mandated the Bank of Ghana, through its Governor, to provide the state with a stable currency, the second defendant allegedly chose to allow the value of the cedi to be determined solely by market forces, including demand and supply on the foreign exchange (forex) markets, leading to its instability and volatility.

It is the case of the plaintiff that the immediate past Governor allegedly failed to develop or implement any credible plan consistent with the law to stabilise the currency.

As Governor, Ms Balbir said he also served as the Chairperson of the BoG’s Board and its Monetary Policy Committee, which was legally responsible for formulating and executing monetary policy measures, including efforts to stabilise the currency.

The plaintiff indicated that she formally notified the former Governor on May 30, 2024, of her intention to sue if no efforts were made to restore the cedi’s soundness and value.

However, no remedial action was taken, prompting the current legal action.

Reliefs

Ms Balbir said that unless an order to recover her losses was granted by the court, she would have no recourse for recovery or restitution of the lost value of investment capital.

She is, therefore, asking the court to lift the corporate veil shielding the Bank of Ghana and to hold both the bank and the former Governor jointly and severally liable for her investment losses.

Among other reliefs, the plaintiff is seeking a declaration that the second defendant had been grossly negligent, allegedly in the management of the Ghana Cedi through the first defendant (BoG).

Also, a declaration that the exchange rate losses she had suffered were enforceable against both defendants, jointly and severally.

In a significant move to stimulate local economic development, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ahanta West, Hon. Ing. Ebenezer Aidoo, has engaged the chiefs, elders, and residents of Apimanim on the planned construction of a cassava processing facility in the community.

The engagement forms part of the Assembly’s broader strategy to promote agro-industrial development and inclusive growth within the municipality. “Your generosity in releasing land for this initiative is a demonstration of patriotism and commitment to development,” Hon. Aidoo stated during the meeting.

He added, “This facility will open up new economic opportunities—particularly in job creation, value addition, and agricultural advancement.”

It also aligns with the national agenda of promoting agro-processing and value addition as key pillars of Ghana’s sustainable development strategy.

The MCE was accompanied by senior officials from the Assembly, including the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Joyce Akosua Angmorteh; Municipal Planning Officer, Pln. Jalil Ali Mahama, Municipal Director of Agriculture, Mr. Dennis Adjei Antwi, and staff from the Works Department. The team visited the proposed project site to assess its readiness for construction.

Empress Gifty chides popular pharmaceutical company for using late mother’s photo on billboards

Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty

Ghanaian gospel musician Empress Gifty has expressed disappointment on Ernest Chemist using her late mother’s pictures on billboards for promotional purposes without proper protocols.

Speaking in a TikTok live video, Empress disclosed that she wasn’t informed when they were mounting another billboard after her mother’s demise.

According to her, she bought all the drugs and drips from Ernest Chemist when her late mother was admitted at the hospital and she was allowed to pay for everything fully, even after mentioning that she is buying the drugs for her mother.

“The woman you used on your billboard is dead, but I wasn’t informed before using her picture. She wasn’t just buried after demise, there was a proper funeral arrangement. I don’t need your money for anything, but it’s appropriate because you’ve worked with her before, you’ve used her pictures on your billboard nationwide. After her demise, you mount another billboard with her picture.

“When my mother was admitted at the hospital, I bought all the drugs and drips prescribed from Ernest Chemist. I bought drugs every week, the lady at the counter asked me if one person was taken all the drugs and I intentionally told her that the woman they used on their billboard was the one taking the drugs and I paid for everything fully” she said.

The award-winning gospel artiste further called out the pharmaceutical company to do the right thing by showing prove that they still have contract with her late mother.

“Ernest Chemist; do the right thing, put some respect on my mother’s name. Bring the contract you had with my mother let me confirm. It’s been four months and I’ve just kept mute” she stated.

Dedicate a unit within the police for SHS security – CHASS appeals to Minister of Education

Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has proposed the creation of a dedicated police unit within the Ghana Police Service to address growing security concerns in senior high schools across the country.

The call was made during a meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, in Sunyani.

CHASS explained that incidents of indiscipline and threats to student safety have been on the rise in recent years, prompting the need for a more professional and authoritative security presence in schools.

According to a metrotvonline.com report, the headteachers believe that the current arrangements involving private security guards are insufficient to manage the evolving security needs of secondary schools.

“Security in our schools is no longer something we can take lightly. We need professional support to ensure that students not only feel safe, but also understand the boundaries of discipline,” a representative reportedly said.

CHASS recommended the establishment of a special unit within the Ghana Police Service, dedicated solely to educational institutions.

This unit, they proposed, would not only help maintain order, but also build a culture of discipline and respect among students, while responding swiftly to any incidents that arise.

The headteachers stressed that the presence of police officers would help prevent conflicts, control unauthorised entries, and ensure that schools remain safe spaces for both students and teaching staff.

The report added that the CHASS members also believe that professional security oversight would create an environment more conducive to learning.

Ghana set for high stakes quarterfinal showdown with hosts Egypt

Players of the Black Satellites Players of the Black Satellites

Ghana’s Black Satellites are bracing themselves for a decisive clash against host nation Egypt in the quarter-finals of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday, May 12, 2025, a match that carries not just the weight of progression but also the golden ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

There’s further good news for Ghana as dynamic attacker, Jerry Afriyie, who had temporarily left the camp to feature for his club, has returned and is back in contention for the crucial encounter.

His availability could add extra firepower to Ghana’s attack as they face a well-organised Egyptian side.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. For Ghana, it’s not just about reaching the semi-finals, it’s about booking a spot at the global stage and reigniting the rich legacy of Black Satellites football.

For Egypt, it’s about defending home soil and satisfying a demanding home crowd. As such, the game, set to kick off at 3 pm, would definitely deliver drama, tension, and a battle that could define a generation.
