Telecel Ghana Foundation’s Healthfest boosts healthcare access in Obrachere

0

Obrachere and nearby communities receive free health screenings at the CHPS Compound

The newly built Obrachere CHPS Compound, located in the Central Region, which has long struggled with low patient attendance, recorded an unprecedented turnout on Wednesday, August 13.

This was when the Telecel Ghana Foundation brought its flagship Healthfest and Rural Ultrasound Scan initiatives to the community.

For months, health workers at the facility had been concerned about the low turnout of patients seeking care, with most residents from Obrachere and nearby communities only visiting when illnesses became severe.

The Foundation’s intervention changed that dynamic, attracting residents from 10 neighbouring communities for a day of accessible, cost-free healthcare.

In total, 575 residents were screened for blood pressure, blood glucose, temperature, weight, pulse, typhoid, hepatitis B, and malaria. 40 expectant mothers received free ultrasound scans, while 347 people registered, renewed, or replaced their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards, giving them the means to seek care in the future without financial strain.

Bernard, the newly posted Physician Assistant at the CHPS Compound, described the activation as a turning point for the facility.

“Attendance here has always been low, but today we saw everyone: the elderly, youth, mothers, and fathers. People are leaving not only with treatment but also with insurance coverage,” he said.

“Most people were clearly unwell but could not afford hospital visits. With the CHPS Compound’s typical low attendance, this event has been a welcome boost for the community.

“The free NHIS services mean residents can now return here when they are unwell without worrying about the cost.”

The Foundation’s Healthfest is an initiative designed to bridge healthcare access gaps in underserved areas by combining free diagnostics, consultations, and treatment with NHIS enrollment.

This approach not only addresses urgent health needs but also encourages regular use of local health facilities, creating long-term behavioural changes.

Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of the Telecel Ghana Foundation, Sustainability & External Communications, emphasised the importance of sustaining healthcare access beyond outreach events.

“Our goal is not only to bring healthcare services closer to underserved communities but also to remove the barriers that prevent people from seeking care.

“By combining free screenings with NHIS registration, we are helping residents access treatment today and ensuring they can return to the clinic whenever they need care in the future.”

Several community members expressed gratitude for the intervention. Mary, a pregnant woman from a nearby village, shared that her last scan in June cost GHS 50, which she could not afford this month.

“Today it was completely free. Most people here cannot afford these services,” she said.

Kwame Abbey, a father of three, added: “We all received treatment for free. I even came ready to pay, but I was not charged a pesewa. If we had gone to the hospital, the costs would have been high since my whole family has no insurance. Thanks to Telecel Ghana Foundation, my mother, grandmother, and all my children were treated for free.”

By the end of the day, the once-quiet Obrachere CHPS Compound was bustling, and the medical team is confident the change will last.

SEC to roll out new guidelines for Forex Trading in Ghana – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is taking steps to expedite the development of regulatory guidelines for forex trading in Ghana, a market that contributes to the estimated $6.6 trillion traded globally each day.

The move is intended to enhance transparency, protect investors, and strengthen confidence in the financial system.

According to the Commission, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to deepen Ghana’s financial markets, align with global best practices, and safeguard economic stability.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghana Journalists Association, the Acting Deputy Director-General of the SEC, Mensah Thompson, revealed that work on the framework is already underway.

“We are currently developing the guidelines on forex trading and so very soon are going to regulate and license forex traders in this country,” he disclosed.

Mr. Thompson added that the Commission is also streamlining the process of verifying licensed investment companies, to help the public easily identify genuine firms and avoid fraudulent schemes.

“The purpose of the short code is for easy verification of licensed operators,” he explained.

For his part, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Dwumfour, applauded the SEC’s initiatives and underscored the need for collaboration between regulators and the media to promote financial literacy and protect the investing public.

“We acknowledge the critical work of the Securities and Exchange Commission especially we want to recognize SEC as a crucial pillar of our nation’s economic architecture,” he said.

Analysts suggest that the regulatory regime, once finalized, could boost investor confidence, expand participation in forex as an asset class, and minimize risks associated with fraudulent operators that have exploited retail traders in recent years.

Residents of Sikaman in the Adanse Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region are expressing disappointment and frustration over what they perceive as the government’s failure to recognize their efforts following the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.

According to the Unit Committee Chairman, Kwame Seth, despite the crucial role residents played in retrieving the bodies from the mountain and handing them over to security officials, they have been completely overlooked in the aftermath.

Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s Dwabrem show,on Monday August 18, 2025, Seth noted that while they are not demanding much from the government, they expect some form of recognition for their contributions.

He emphasised that the residents, particularly those involved in the retrieval process, deserve to be acknowledged and rewarded for their efforts.

The residents have therefore called on the government to recognize their contributions and show appreciation for their role in responding to the tragic event.

They believe this would be a fitting gesture, given the significant part they played in the aftermath of the crash.

Afenyo-Markin blames job losses on Mahama’s policy reversals

Afenyo-Markin is the minority leader in parliament Afenyo-Markin is the minority leader in parliament

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused President John Dramani Mahama of worsening unemployment by scrapping flagship programmes introduced under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking at the Asante Students Union’s grand durbar at the University of Ghana, the Effutu MP said initiatives such as One District, One Factory (1D1F) and tax exemptions had spurred investment and created jobs.

Their cancellation, he argued, has discouraged investors and slowed down economic growth.

“Nearly one in four Ghanaians wakes up each day without a job. With unemployment officially around 15 percent, this is no longer just an economic challenge, it’s a threat to national security,” Afenyo-Markin cautioned.

He warned that scrapping 1D1F and suspending tax waivers had “killed opportunities for sustainable employment” and urged young people to be innovative in creating their own opportunities, even as they demand a more enabling environment from government.

The Minority Leader also expressed concern over rising unpaid loans, revealing that small businesses owe MASLOC over GH¢291 million after 12 years, while banks recorded more than GH¢654 million in bad debts in just five months this year.

He further noted the growing trend of mobile money loan defaults, warning that borrowers disappearing into “digital darkness” posed risks to the country’s financial stability.

Afenyo-Markin called on government to adopt business-friendly policies that would inspire innovation, attract investment, and drive sustainable job creation.

Christopher Antwi-Adjei (M with the ball) was racially abused Christopher Antwi-Adjei (M with the ball) was racially abused

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has offered massive support to Black Stars winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei after suffering racial abuse during Schalke 04 clash against FC Lokomotive Leipzig in the German Cup.

The 31-year-old winger was racially abused on Sunday August 17, 2025 by FC Lokomotive Leipzig supporter in the first round clash of the DFB Pokal.

The incident occurred in the 13th minute when Antwi-Adjei went to the touchline to take a throw-in when words were shouted that have no place on a football pitch or anywhere else.

After Antwi-Adjei raised the issue, the referee stopped the match so the home club could make a stadium announcement.

The former Bochum star struggled throughout the game as he was booed by a section of the home team crowd.

However, the president of the Ghana FA has swiftly condemned the act, stressing racism has no place in football.

“Yesterday, (referring to Sunday August 17, 2025) our own Christopher Antwi-Adjei suffered racial abuse during Schalke 04’s German Cup tie against FC Lokomotive Leipzig”

“As a nation and as a football family, we stand firmly with Christopher. Racism has no place on the pitch, in the stands, or anywhere in society”

“We commend him for his strength and courage in the face of such provocation. His dignity is a powerful reminder that hate will never defeat the spirit of the beautiful game”

“On behalf of the Ghana Football Association, I extend our full support to Christopher and join the global football community in calling for decisive action against all forms of discrimination”

“Together, we must continue to ensure that football remains a safe space for respect, equality, and unity”

Schalke 04 triumphed in the clash after inflicting a 1-0 win over Lokomotive Leipzig to progress in the Cup competition.

The experienced winger joined Schalke 04 last summer, with his current contract expected to expire next summer.

Sudan army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan attends former UN official Kamil Idris swearing-in ceremony Sudan army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan attends former UN official Kamil Idris swearing-in ceremony

Sudan’s army chief appointed a raft of new senior officers on Monday in a reshuffle that strengthened his hold on the military as he consolidates control of central and eastern regions and fights fierce battles in the west.

Sudan’s army, which controls the government, is fighting a more than two-year civil war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, its former partners in power, that has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan made new appointments to the Joint Chiefs of Staff a day after announcing the retirement of several long-serving officers, some of whom have gained a measure of fame over the past two years.

Burhan, who serves as Sudan’s internationally recognised head of state, kept the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mohamed Othman al-Hussein, but appointed a new inspector general and a new head of the air force.

Another decree from Burhan on Sunday brought all the other armed groups fighting alongside the army – including former Darfur rebels, Islamist brigades, civilians who joined the war effort and tribal militias – under his control.

Sudanese politicians praised the decision, saying it would prevent the development of other centres of power in the military, and potentially the future formation of other parallel forces like the RSF.

The RSF has its roots in Arab militias armed by the military in the early 2000s to fight in Darfur. It was allowed to develop parallel structures and supply lines.

The reshuffle comes a week after Burhan met U.S. senior Africa adviser Massad Boulos in Switzerland, where issues including a transition to civilian rule were discussed, government sources said.

The war erupted in April 2023 when the army and the RSF clashed over plans to integrate their forces.

The RSF made quick gains in central Sudan, including the capital Khartoum, but the army pushed them westward this year, leading to an intensification in fighting in al-Fashir in Darfur.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has directed that all national flags hoisted at public buildings across the country be restored to full mast with immediate effect, following the befitting burial and successful state funeral of the eight public officials who died in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, in the Ashanti region.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 18, the Presidency expressed profound gratitude to Ghanaians and the international community for the overwhelming support shown since the tragedy.

The government acknowledged the solidarity of chiefs, clergy, Muslim clerics, civil society groups, the diplomatic corps, political leaders, security chiefs, and service personnel who extended condolences, offered assistance, and stood with the bereaved families during the period of mourning.

The victims include Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Samuel Aboagye, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed.

“We are deeply moved by the outpouring of solidarity shown across the nation and beyond. Your messages of sympathy, your attendance at the state funeral, your practical assistance, and the many acts of kindness extended to the bereaved families have provided great consolation in this time of sorrow,” the statement read.

Special appreciation was also extended to individuals and corporate organisations whose support ensured that the victims received a dignified state burial, one described as a fitting farewell that honoured their memory and reflected the compassion of the Ghanaian people.

“As we return to the duties of resetting Ghana and building the country we want, let us remain united in prayer, comfort one another, and continue to support the families affected by this tragedy,” it added.

However, Stanbic Bank Ghana has donated GHS500,000 to the newly established Children’s Support Fund, set up to provide financial assistance to the children of the victims

Angela Okorie Stirs Reactions As She Revealed That Naira Marley Will Be Performing On Her Birthday

News Hub Creator1d

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie is clearly not letting public opinion get in the way of her friendships — especially when it comes to Nigerian singer Naira Marley.

With her birthday set for August 17, the actress has been on full countdown mode, flooding Instagram with photo banners of guest artists lined up to perform at her big day. The surprise? Naira Marley is one of the headline acts.

This comes not long after Angela faced heavy backlash online for openly defending the singer. In her earlier post, she described Naira Marley as “a sweet soul,” recalling how he once showed up at her birthday years ago and gifted her money — a statement that didn’t exactly sit well with critics.

Now, the story is repeating itself — only this time, Naira Marley won’t just be attending, he’ll be performing live at her celebration.

As expected, Angela’s post sparked a flurry of reactions in her comment section, with netizens sharing mixed opinions on her continued association with the music star.

Police in the Central Region have arrested a 35-year-old man accused of defrauding more than 20 people by funding an extravagant naming ceremony with borrowed money.

Richard Kobee, from Enyanmaim in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District, was arrested at his hideout in Takoradi in the Western Region after months on the run.

He is alleged to have collected over GH¢20,000 from residents, claiming the money was to secure hospital bail for his mother. Victims say they lent him the funds in good faith, only to later discover his mother was not ill.

Instead, Kobee reportedly used the money to stage what locals described as the most expensive naming ceremony the community had ever witnessed.

After the event, he assured residents he would repay them, but more than four months passed without any refunds. Victims subsequently complained to the police in Mankessim.

Reverend Fiifi Michael, a journalist and Master of the Ceremony who had initially facilitated some of the borrowing, said Kobee also used multiple phone numbers to defraud people. In some cases, he allegedly impersonated a woman or lured female victims into fake relationships to obtain money.

According to reports, he had security cameras installed at his home and often locked himself inside to evade those demanding repayment.

He later fled to Takoradi, where he changed all his phone numbers before being tracked down.

Kobee has since been returned to Enyanmaim for identification by victims and is currently assisting police with investigations at the Ajumako District Police Command.

Government is committed to tourism – Alex Segbefia reaffirms

Segbefia described the festival as a celebration of Ghana’s history and identity Segbefia described the festival as a celebration of Ghana’s history and identity

The 2025 Agotime Kente Festival was marked by a resounding call to preserve cultural heritage and harness it for national development, as the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia, extolled the global significance of kente and pledged government’s continued investment in infrastructure, tourism, and regional growth.

Addressing the grand durbar at Agotime-Kpetoe, where he served as Special Guest of Honour, Segbefia described the festival as a celebration of Ghana’s history, identity, and cultural influence.

He noted that kente, long before the adoption of the national flag, was a symbol of identity and pride during the independence movement and has since gained global recognition across the African diaspora and fashion industry.

“Kente weaves history and politics into a material that is both local and global,” he said, commending the people of Agotime for curating a festival that promotes both local heritage and Ghana’s broader cultural footprint.

Linking culture to national development, Segbefia highlighted government initiatives to boost tourism and infrastructure.

He pointed to the inauguration of the Ghana Tourism Authority Governing Board by the Minister of Tourism, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, as part of a broader strategy to position Ghana as a competitive destination.

He underscored the role of infrastructure in driving growth, stressing that safe transport, affordable food, and reliable healthcare are essential to unlocking Ghana’s tourism potential.

He reaffirmed government’s “Big Push Agenda,” a $2 billion annual investment over five years in education, health, and transport infrastructure, saying: “A tourist is more likely to visit when they know they can move around safely and access reliable services.”

Assuring the people of the Volta Region of government’s commitment, he cited ongoing and planned projects including the Eastern Corridor Road, Blekusu Sea Defence Project, Ho-Denu Road, and expanded agricultural investments.

He also announced that Agotime will be connected to the Adidome Water Project, in response to concerns raised by Paramount Chief Nene Nuer Keteku.

On healthcare, Segbefia outlined plans to position Ghana as a medical tourism hub, with the Ho Teaching Hospital expected to play a leading role under a new governing board tasked with modernizing its operations.

Concluding, he urged Ghanaians to preserve and celebrate cultural traditions. “Let us be curious about their origins, preserve them, and celebrate our cultural output,” he said.

Segbefia was later enstooled as a Development Chief of Agotime. Other speakers called for unity, patriotism, humility in service, and accelerated development for the Volta Region.

Agenda 111 Hospital project at Adeiso was a disaster – Upper West Akim MP – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim, Emmanuel Drah, has described the Agenda 111 Hospital project at Adeiso as a complete failure that has dashed the hopes of his constituents.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, August 18, Mr. Drah expressed frustration over the state of the project, noting that residents of Upper West Akim had long anticipated improved healthcare facilities under the previous government’s flagship Agenda 111 initiative.

He emphasised that years after the project was announced, nothing meaningful had been achieved, apart from what he described as a “big hole” at the construction site.

According to him, the abandoned site stands as a symbol of broken promises and wasteful expenditure on the side of the Akufo-Addo government.

“When we heard about the Agenda 111 programme, we were very happy because we thought it was something that was going to work out. But I must say that it has been a total failure. They started something. They dug a very big hole, bigger than what we see at the National Cathedral site.

“The land earmarked for the project is along the Adeiso-Obengyaw road. You can only see a very big hole, no concrete, nothing. You can’t even get close. It has been a total failure. The people of Upper West Akim are highly disappointed.

“They said they have paid over $2 million on that hole they dug at Adeiso. I haven’t seen the engineering myself, but they said they wanted to do an underground something,” he stated.

‘Fire your lawyers!’ – A heated response to Dr Ayensu Danquah

Prof Abdulai Jinapor has asked Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah to fire her legal representatives Prof Abdulai Jinapor has asked Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah to fire her legal representatives

The Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Prof Abdulai Jinapor, has urged the Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah, to do away with her current legal representatives.

Speaking in a Joy FM interview on Monday, August 18, 2025, Prof Jinapor accused the deputy minister and her legal team of being inconsistent about her academic credentials.

“Two weeks to respond to her demand? That she is a full professor, an assistant professor, or an adjunct assistant professor? Which is which? As I have indicated, the lawyers have not been helpful to her cause, and if I am advising her, I think the lawyers need to be fired,” he stated.

The statement by Prof Jinapor comes on the back of an August 13, 2025, letter addressed to the management of GTEC by the lawyers of the deputy minister over her use of the academic title “Professor.”

Presidential Candidate, Minister, MPs: Meet 8 public figures GTEC is chasing for using ‘fake’ titles

Dr Ayensu Danquah, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, was directed by GTEC to cease using the title, as the Commission concluded she does not hold the rank of Professor in any capacity.

GTEC, in a letter dated August 12, 2025, addressed to the Chief of Staff and copied to various high-ranking offices, warned that her continued use of the title could lead to legal action for public deception.

In response, Dr Ayensu Danquah’s legal team, led by David K Ametefe, accused GTEC of bias, overreach, and procedural irregularities. They criticized the Commission’s approach as “abrasive, unnecessarily combative, and disparaging,” arguing that its assessment of her credentials lacked transparency and statutory backing.

The lawyers highlighted that Dr Ayensu Danquah was appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah, and they rejected GTEC’s stance that only tenure-track appointments qualify for the title “Professor,” calling it inconsistent with international academic norms like the UNESCO Global Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications.

Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah does not hold the title of ‘professor’ in any capacity – GTEC

The lawyers made various demands, including a disclosure of GTEC’s evaluation process, clarification of its legal authority, and evidence that their client was given a fair chance to respond.

The lawyers also challenged GTEC’s decision to involve offices like Parliament and the Presidency, labeling it “potentially defamatory” and politically motivated while warning that a failure by GTEC to address their concerns within 14 days would lead to legal action.

But reacting to the interview, Prof Jinapor pointed out that a chronology of events shows a clear pattern of inconsistency between the deputy minister and her legal representatives.

“The Honourable Deputy Minister of Health, an MP, said on national TV that she is a full professor from the University of Utah, Department of Surgery. That is a statement of fact,” Prof Jinapor stated.

‘Bring your CV, so we compare it with mine’ – Dr Ayensu-Danquah fires GTEC boss

He outlined evidence contrary to the claims by Dr Ayensu Danquah and her lawyers.

“Her lawyers wrote to GTEC and indicated that she is an assistant professor at Utah. The University of Utah wrote to GTEC and indicated that she is an adjunct assistant professor,” he said.

He added that attempts by GTEC to resolve the issue privately with the MP before an escalation of the matter had yielded negative results.

He revealed that a scheduled meeting between the board chairman of GTEC and Dr Ayensu Danquah to get her to stop using the title failed.

“She didn’t heed that,” he stated.

He emphasized that the Commission’s interest is not to target individuals but to ensure academic integrity.

“As a matter of fact, as we speak, she has not been able to provide us with a document that points to her appointment, whether as a full professor, an assistant professor, or an adjunct professor,” Prof Jinapor stated.

He thus challenged the deputy minister to come clean and prove her credentials, warning that the confusion around the issue may fester if she fails to do so.

The seizure, made on 14 August 2025, involved about 7,700 tablets of 250mg Tapentadol The seizure, made on 14 August 2025, involved about 7,700 tablets of 250mg Tapentadol

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Volta Region has intercepted a consignment of Tapentadol Hydrochloride tablets, popularly known as “Red,” valued at GH¢11.5 million at the Kpoglu border.

The seizure, made on 14 August 2025, involved about 7,700 tablets of 250mg Tapentadol concealed in sacks aboard a truck with registration number TG 6891 BI. The vehicle was entering Ghana from Nigeria.

Confirming the operation, Volta and Oti Regional Head of the FDA, Gorden Akurugu, said the consignment was intercepted during a routine surveillance exercise. The driver, identified as Oliver Takra of Go Express Transport Company, together with an agent, was immediately arrested and handed over to the police.

Two other suspects, a Nigerian man and a woman believed to be the intended recipients, are currently assisting with investigations.

According to the FDA, the seizure violates Section 122 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which prohibits the importation of medicines, herbal products, medical devices, cosmetics, or chemical substances without the necessary permit.

Akurugu stressed that medicines are not permitted to enter Ghana through inland borders, adding that Kotoka International Airport and Tema Harbour remain the only legally approved entry points. He warned that offenders face severe penalties, including prison terms of up to 25 years.

He assured the public that the suspects will be prosecuted and commended the collaborative efforts of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), and National Security for their role in the successful operation.

“This interception is a clear signal that we are committed to protecting public health and ensuring the safety of Ghanaians,” MAkurugu said.

Collapse of Amanase bridge cripples’ socio-economic life

Amanasehene, Osabarima Etuobefom Asare Panin Amanasehene, Osabarima Etuobefom Asare Panin

Residents of Amanase in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region are raising alarm over the collapse of a crucial bridge that connects the town to Aboabo and several surrounding communities, describing it as a major threat to livelihoods and public safety.

Amanasehene, Osabarima Etuobefom Asare Panin, told Accra FM/CTV News that the bridge, which has been in a deplorable state for years, has now become a “dangerous deathtrap” and is severely disrupting socio-economic activities.

“The poor condition of the bridge is affecting every aspect of life — trading, healthcare, education, and farming,” he lamented.

The collapse has forced many drivers to abandon the route, while those who still operate charge significantly higher fares due to long detours, further straining the finances of local residents.

The chief has therefore appealed to government authorities and relevant stakeholders to respond swiftly by reconstructing the bridge and restoring safe access for the community.

In a related appeal, Osabarima Etuobefom Asare Panin also highlighted the urgent need for a new school building in Amanase. He said the current structure is dilapidated and poses serious risks to both pupils and teachers.

He revealed that severe overcrowding has worsened the situation, with primary school classrooms holding as many as 95 pupils and Junior High School classes accommodating up to 90 students each.

“This congestion is not conducive to effective teaching and learning,” the chief stressed, urging government intervention to provide a modern, safe educational facility for the children of Amanase.

Leicester reject €32m Sunderland bid for Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku

Ghana international winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku Ghana international winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku

Leicester City have reportedly rejected a 32 million Euros bid from Sunderland for Ghana international winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, according to transfer insider Edu17Burgos.

The Black Cats, who are pushing ambitiously to strengthen their squad since their return to the Premier League, identified Fatawu as a marquee signing to bolster their attacking options.

However, Leicester remain determined to keeping hold of the 21-year-old, who has emerged as one of their most valuable assets despite the club’s relegation to the Championship last season.

Fatawu has been a standout performer since joining Leicester permanently from Sporting Lisbon in 2023.

He has already clocked up 57 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and contributing with his direct dribbling, pace, and eye for goal.

His development at Leicester has also been mirrored on the international stage, where he has earned 24 caps for Ghana, further underlining his rising profile in world football.

Sunderland’s interest reflects their growing ambition to compete at the top level, but it also highlights the increasing demand for Fatawu’s services across Europe.

With Aston Villa and other Premier League clubs also monitoring his situation, Leicester face a real challenge in retaining him before the transfer window closes.

Rejecting Sunderland’s approach sends a strong message: the Foxes see Fatawu as central to their promotion push under new boss Marti Cifuentes.

ISIL-backed rebels killed at least 52 people in eastern DR Congo, UN says

Rebels backed by ISIL (ISIS) have killed at least 52 civilians in the Democratic Republic of the Con Rebels backed by ISIL (ISIS) have killed at least 52 civilians in the Democratic Republic of the Con

Rebels backed by ISIL (ISIS) have killed at least 52 civilians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo this month, according to the United Nations peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) in the country, as both the DRC army and Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group accuse each other of violating a recently reached US-mediated ceasefire deal.

Attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) targeted the Beni and Lubero territories of the eastern North Kivu province between August 9 and 16, MONUSCO said on Monday, warning that the death toll could rise further.

The renewed violence comes as a separate conflict between the DRC army and the M23 group continues to simmer in the east of the country, despite a series of peace treaties signed in recent months. The government and M23 had agreed to sign a permanent peace deal by August 18, but no agreement was announced on Monday.

The latest ADF “violence was accompanied by kidnappings, looting, the burning of houses, vehicles, and motorcycles, as well as the destruction of property belonging to populations already facing a precarious humanitarian situation,” MONUSCO said. It condemned the attacks “in the strongest possible terms”, the mission’s spokesperson said.

The ADF is among several militias wrangling over land and resources in the DRC’s mineral-rich east.

Lieutenant Elongo Kyondwa Marc, a regional Congolese army spokesperson, said the ADF was taking revenge on civilians after suffering defeats by Congolese forces.

“When they arrived, they first woke the residents, gathered them in one place, tied them up with ropes, and then began to massacre them with machetes and hoes,” Macaire Sivikunula, chief of Lubero’s Bapere sector, told the Reuters news agency over the weekend.

After a relative lull in recent months, authorities said the group killed nearly 40 people in Komanda city, Ituri province, last month, when it stormed a Catholic church during a vigil and fired on worshippers, including many women and children.

The ADF, an armed group formed by former Ugandan rebels in the 1990s after discontent with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has killed thousands of civilians and increased looting and killings in the northeastern DRC.

In 2002, following military assaults by Ugandan forces, the group moved its activities to neighbouring DRC. In 2019, it pledged allegiance to ISIL.

Among the 52 victims so far this month, at least nine were killed overnight from Saturday to Sunday in an attack on the town of Oicha, in North Kivu, the AFP news agency learned from security and local sources.

A few days earlier, the ADF had already killed at least 40 people in several towns in the Bapere sector, also in North Kivu province, according to local and security sources.

In response to the renewed attacks, MONUSCO said it had strengthened its military presence in several sectors and allowed several hundred civilians to take refuge in its base.

At the end of 2021, Kampala and Kinshasa launched a joint military operation against the ADF, dubbed “Shujaa”, so far without succeeding in putting an end to their attacks.

SEC nabs four for investment fraud in Northern Region – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has confirmed the arrest of four individuals — three Rwandan nationals and a Ghanaian — for allegedly orchestrating fraudulent investment schemes in the Northern Region.

According to the Commission, the arrests follow extensive investigations and form part of broader efforts to protect investors and reinforce confidence in Ghana’s capital market.

Deputy Director-General of the SEC, Mensah Thompson, speaking at an engagement with the Ghana Journalists Association, emphasized that the Commission remains resolute in safeguarding economic stability and will not compromise on measures to shield the public from financial harm.

“In-house, we have an investigation team that goes out to investigate these schemes, and two weeks ago, they were in the Northern Region.

They were able to arrest four people, 3 Rwandan nationals and one Ghanaian. They work with EOCO and the Ghana Police Service, and the suspects are currently standing trial,” he disclosed.

He added that the current economic gains which are boosting investor confidence will be strengthened “Ghana has just come out of a debt exchange programme which took a lot of confidence away from the capital market.

We have seen an upwards trajectory in most of our key portfolios and it has become very necessary for us to protect these gains that we have made on these areas.”

FEDCO Sets Gold Standard with Early Commercial Paper Redemption

Federated Commodities PLC (FEDCO)

Federated Commodities PLC (FEDCO), a major player in Ghana’s cocoa sector, has successfully redeemed its entire Commercial Paper issuance ahead of schedule.

The company paid investors a total of GHC 78.36 million, covering both the principal of GHS 72.5 million raised and accrued interest. This move fulfills FEDCO’s commitment to its investors well before the August 17, 2025, final due date.

Managing Director Maria Adamu-Zibo hailed the capital raise as a “strategic leap” for FEDCO. She emphasized the company’s dedication to honoring its promises.

“We are an organisation that lives up to our word,” Adamu-Zibo stated, explaining the decision to complete payments early. This transaction represents the first full redemption of a commercial paper listed on the Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) since the market’s launch by the Ghana Stock Exchange in 2024.

The successful issuance and early repayment are seen as a significant boost for Ghana’s developing capital markets. FEDCO’s experience demonstrates the viability of the Commercial Paper Market as a transparent platform for businesses seeking short-term financing.

Market observers expect this milestone to encourage more Ghanaian corporates to explore similar funding avenues on the GFIM.

Several key institutions facilitated the landmark transaction. First Atlantic Bank Ghana acted as the lead arranger, with First Atlantic Brokers serving as the broker.

Advisory and assurance roles were handled by Deloitte Ghana, G.A. Sarpong & Co, and Glico General. GCB Bank PLC provided custody services, while the Central Securities Depository managed the settlement. Beacon Ratings provided the necessary credit rating.

This early redemption underscores FEDCO’s financial strength and operational discipline within Ghana’s vital cocoa industry.

It sends a strong signal about the company’s reliability to both business partners and the financial community under the current Mahama administration.

Scrapping key policies has ‘killed opportunities for jobs’ – Afenyo-Markin slams Mahama – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the John Dramani Mahama administration of abandoning key initiatives introduced under the Akufo-Addo government, a move he says has worsened Ghana’s unemployment situation.

Speaking at the grand durbar, homecoming, and handing-over ceremony of the Asante Students Union at the University of Ghana, on Sunday, August 17, 2025, Afenyo-Markin said the scrapping of flagship policies such as the One District One Factory (1D1F) programme and related tax exemptions has discouraged investment and slowed job creation.

“More than one in every four Ghanaians wakes up each morning with no meaningful job to go to. Our overall unemployment rate is nearly 15%, according to official sources. When young people can’t find jobs, it is not just an economic problem; it becomes a threat to our national security in a region experiencing various forms of armed conflict,” he said.

He added that the discontinuation of 1D1F and the suspension of tax waivers that supported industries had “killed” opportunities for sustainable employment.

“This is what it means—when the government fails to create the right economic environment to inspire the creation of new jobs, young people must innovate to create their own. When leaders won’t build opportunities, the next generation of leaders must build them from scratch. The choice is simple: either we solve the unemployment crisis, or it will solve us in ways we won’t like,” he stressed.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns over the growing burden of unpaid loans, particularly under the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).

“Over GH¢291 million loaned to small businesses through MASLOC remains unpaid after 12 years, as of February last year. In our banking sector, GH¢654 million vanished as bad debt in just five months this year.

“In the momo sector, people borrow and simply disappear into the digital darkness. This culture is a cancer eating at our economic soul,” he warned.

The Minority Leader urged the government to create a more business-friendly environment to support innovation, investment, and sustainable job creation.

Assafuah demands full disclosure on Mahama’s travel – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Old Tafo Member of Parliament (MP), Vincent Ekow Assafuah, is demanding answers from the government regarding the cost and details of President John Dramani Mahama’s recent international trip, insisting it is within his right as a legislator to seek clarity on matters involving public funds.

Speaking in response to criticism following a controversial Facebook post, Assafuah defended his decision to question the mode of the President’s travel and the associated costs to the taxpayer.

“I have made a Facebook post that seeks answers from government. It is within my rights as an MP to seek answers with regards to how my President is travelling out of the country, the amount of money that it is costing the taxpayer, the people that he is going with — because they are going to be paid per diem. All this information should not be hidden from us,” he said on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday August 18.

The MP had earlier alleged that a private jet, M-BAEP, left Accra on the morning of Sunday, August 17, around 7 a.m., and speculated that it may have been used for President Mahama’s official visit to Japan and Singapore. He estimated the total cost of the jet’s travel could amount to $690,000, triggering widespread debate online.

Assafuah further challenged the presidency, arguing that although government insists President Mahama flew on Emirates, he doubts the entire presidential delegation used the commercial flight.

“I am suggesting to you that I do not think that the President and his delegation, all of them, went with the Emirates flight that they are talking about.”

His remarks come after the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, strongly dismissed the private jet claims as false and politically motivated.

“President Mahama has not travelled by private jet. Indeed, President Mahama travelled to Japan via Emirates, and it is something that you can check,” he said, labelling Assafuah’s claims as a “shambolic effort at propaganda.”

President Mahama is currently on a two-nation visit to Japan and Singapore, focused on strengthening bilateral ties and promoting investment opportunities in Ghana.

While the government maintains the President flew on a commercial airline and followed due process, Assafuah insists that full disclosure is needed on travel arrangements, delegation size, and expenditure.

Contractors resume work on Pokuase-Nsawam road – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Contractors have returned to the Pokuase–Nsawam road to continue repair works, bringing relief to commuters who have endured weeks of gridlock.

The development comes just days before the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) one-week ultimatum to government was due to expire on Wednesday, August 20. The union had threatened to halt operations if contractors were not deployed back to the site.

Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Sedem Afenyo, confirmed to Citi News’ Philip Nii Lartey that he had received assurances the repair works would progress steadily.

He noted that traffic flow on the stretch had improved significantly, saying it was the first time in weeks that vehicles were moving freely.

“Saturday in the morning I realised some work was being done here. Sunday I went to church when I came back they were still working. Today they’ve moved to Sapeiman and Samsam junction. I drove to Samsam I realised that they have done a bit of filling. Sapeiman they have done a bit of levelling or let me say reshaping and a bit of refilling,” Mr. Afenyo recounted.

“What we’ve seen now is a situation we’ve not seen in the past two months. I have never seen vehicles drive at this speed in the past two weeks. There is always traffic here.

“The engineers I spoke to told me they are hoping to finish this stretch as in the filling and leveling of the road by close this week. That is if there is no rain, move to the other side, asphalt it for us and then move traffic flow to the other side and then work on this side,” the MP added.

Declare localised state of emergency to fight galamsey – Ashigbey – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Convenor of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged the government to declare a state of emergency in communities heavily impacted by illegal mining, arguing that extraordinary measures are needed to fight the menace.

His call comes in the wake of the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives. The victims were en route to an anti-galamsey event in Obuasi when the incident occurred. Following the tragedy, the government announced a renewed crackdown on illegal mining.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Sammi Wiafe on Monday, August 18, Dr. Ashigbey insisted that galamsey must be treated as a national security crisis.

“We need to deal with this as a national security crisis, and it ought to be dealt with. Another thing we have been talking about is the state of emergency; we’re not saying state of emergency in the whole of the country, not even the whole of the district. This particular community, this thing is happening, declare a state of emergency,” he stressed.

Citing Dunkwa in the Central Region as an example, he added:
“Offin River in Dunkwa, for example, you can declare a state of emergency and say nobody should go into that water, so that you give special powers to the police, Forestry Commission to be able to deal with these people [galamseyers].”

Dr. Ashigbey reiterated the Coalition’s position that strong enforcement remains critical to protecting Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves from the destruction caused by galamsey.

Creativity and commitment; the springboard for education – Obomenghene

0

Brain Hill International School, one of Accra’s steadily growing private institutions, has inaugurated a new annex at Weija Gbawe, along the western corridor of the Greater Accra Region.

This expansion brings the school’s total campus count to three, complementing its existing branches in East Legon.

The opening ceremony, held on Sunday, August 10, 2025, was described as a major step forward in the school’s mission to broaden access to quality Cambridge-based education in Ghana.

The decision to establish the new campus was announced only weeks earlier at the school’s annual graduation, where Principal Mr. Awel Rahamani shared the vision with parents and guests.

Held under the theme “Chasing Dreams, Building Legacies,” the launch attracted several dignitaries, including the MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib; MCE for Gbawe, Felix Odartey Lamptey; Gbawe District Education Director, Charles Odum; and the Chief of Kwahu Obomeng, Nana Effah Opinamang III.

In her remarks, Mrs. Mary Awuku, Director of Brain Hill International School, explained the motivation behind the expansion. She emphasized the institution’s mission of raising well-rounded students equipped to excel beyond the classroom.

“Our children will not only receive education; they will be challenged to explore, innovate, and make a mark on the world,” she said, expressing gratitude to parents, staff, and the community for their support.

“Education should not be a privilege of location. We believe every child deserves access to quality learning, no matter which part of the city they live in.”

Mr. Shaib commended the school for its commitment to the community, noting that private efforts complement national educational goals.

“Private institutions like Brain Hill are vital partners in national development. Together with government efforts, they help create a future where quality education is affordable and accessible to all,” he said.

Nana Effah Opinamang III, Chief of Kwahu Obomeng, warmly welcomed Brain Hill into the Gbawe community. He praised the school’s growth over the past seven years—from preschool to primary and now secondary—and commended Mrs. Awuku as “a woman of vision and action whose creativity and commitment to people inspired me to collaborate with her in taking the Gbawe community to greater heights.”

He expressed optimism that, through collective effort, the school would witness remarkable growth in both enrolment and use of its facilities.

Principal Mr. Awel Rahamani encouraged parents to take an active role in shaping their children’s future. “A good school can shape a child’s future, but it works best when parents are fully engaged at home. We must all play our part in laying a strong foundation,” he urged.

Located at Weija Gbawe Top Base, the new campus is expected to serve families across the municipality and beyond. The school reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high academic standards, promoting discipline, and ensuring that tuition remains accessible.

As its motto declares: “Brain Hill International School – Developing Bright Minds.”

According to Afia Schwarzenegger, Ralph St Williams acted “foolishly”, alleging that the serial political activist’s outburst was unwarranted.

“How dare you go to a facility and start threatening health workers?” Afia Schwarzenegger said in a video sighted by
YEN.com.gh.

Afia, now based in the US, was unhappy with Ralph’s approach and heavily criticised his insatiable appetite to publish his encounters on social media.

“Must you video everything and post on social media? You’re depicting your stupidity and foolishness. If Ghana were any serious country, this young man should be in jail by now,” she said.

Afia Schwarzenegger, in criticising Ralph St Williams, blamed John Dramani Mahama for entertaining the latter’s behaviour.

Two Sayings, One Truth -Reflection On Noise, Influence And Power Of Meaningful Silence

0

I once sat quietly at the back of a hall, watching yet another launch by a very popular public institution, like one I have had the privilege to work with. There were colourful banners, the echo of an applause plus promises of transformation.

It was the kind of an event that ticks all the Public Relations (PR) boxes that I was taught in class and even in practice: media presence, official speeches, photo opportunities and carefully choreographed branding.

But, something about it felt too loud. Loud, not in sound, but in energy. It was as though the ‘volume’ of the performance was trying to distract from the absence of substance. Instantly, my thoughts trailed back on the favourite catchphrase “Empty barrels make the most noise” and “He who pays the piper calls the tune.”

As a communications professional, I have lived in the “tension” between these two ideas over the years of practice.I have learned that these dictum are not contradictory. They rather, are one of the same “coin” we mint everyday in the PR world.

The Weight of Noise Without Substance

“Empty barrels make the most noise” is a quiet warning to our profession. We’ve all seen it. Sometimes, we even take part in it. Sadly, PR that’s polished, amplified and beautifully- packaged is but, hollow.
Think about well-branded campaigns with bold slogans and ambitious declarations by the respected Companies in Ghana, but, little follow-through.

Think about the sometimes copious press releases full of buzzwords but lacking the “heart”. Think also about the political party events we hype up with no systems in place to measure or sustain the promise being made. Indeed, these practices keep reminding us that noise is not always impact. Clearly, in PR, when the noise overshadows the truth, credibility becomes the sacrificial lamb.

Who Pays, Often Directs. But, Shouldn’t Always Dictate

The second saying: “He who pays the piper calls the tune is another simple truth we cannot ignore. Our client, sponsor, or leader often dictate the direction of every campaign. They fund the message, and they expect that message to echo their priorities. That’s totally understandable and sometimes, very necessary.

However, this is where our job becomes more than just an amplification. Our responsibility as professionals, is to ensure the “tune being played” is not only what the client wants to hear, but also what the public needs to understand. It’s our job to shape, not just repeat. It is our burden to refine, not just obey.

I recall moments in the line of duty, one day, when I had to gently push back on a message that sounded good on paper but lacked any foundation in terms with the realities on the ground. This was not to challenge authority, but to protect, safeguard everybody’s integrity.

Remember, when we, as PR professionals, allow ourselves to be used merely as loudspeakers for power, we abandon our higher purpose; to connect people to the truth.

Admittedly, these moments with “the truth” are, in most cases, difficult and unpleasant because of the egos that come into play. You hear, ‘I am the Boss’ to ‘You think you know better than Me”.

You will understand the above scenario if you have ever worked in an environment where one particular group of professionals are seen as first class employees. They always know better than you the Professional. But, they create the mess that can only be cleaned by the PR person.

Not Loud, But Intentional

Not long ago, someone who has played an influential role in my life introduced me to one of his “very important friends” — a man I had seen and greeted on several occasions, but with whom I had never truly connected. This time, however, the introduction was formal: “He’s a Communications Professional,” my mentor said.

Almost immediately, the gentleman chuckled and asked, half-seriously, “You? A PR person? Why are you so quiet? Aren’t PR people supposed to be all over the place, making noise and being the face of everything?”

I smiled, choosing my words carefully. I knew this was a rare moment to leave an impression. “The best PR professionals,” I replied, “don’t need to shout. The messages speak for them.”

Truly, my response wasn’t rehearsed; it came from years of watching the difference between being seen or loud and being effective. Some of the most impactful PR strategies I’ve been part of were quiet, deliberate,
deeply rooted in insight and understanding. They didn’t trend for a day; they stayed with people. That’s it!

Our profession is not a contest about visibility; it’s a craft and the science of substance, relevance. Anyone can make a splash; however, not everybody can move minds or shift narratives. In our world, today, where everybody is talking, sometimes, the quietest voice, grounded in the truth, echoes the loudest. There will be no need for rejoinders when the “deception” in the earlier message is exposed.

Holding the Two Sayings Together

When we blend the wisdom of those two sayings discussed above, we arrive at the essence of ethical, effective PR – Remember, don’t be loud without reason, and don’t follow without thinking.

Yes, the client may call the tune. But, it is our responsibility to refine that tune until it resonates, not just with the paymaster, but, with the target audience or public(s). We must not confuse volume with value nor hide behind the excuse that “ I am just doing my job, and that “yessa massa no spoil work”. We should know better.

“Speaking to Power” agenda in Public Relations emphasises the importance of communication that addresses issues of power dynamics within organizations and society. This involves practitioners actively
engaging in conversations that matter, amplifying marginalized voices, and connecting purpose with performance to foster trust and understanding. It is about more than just managing reputations; it” about driving positive change through strategic communication.

Here are some important principles:

One, purpose-driven communication ensures that PR professionals prioritise communication that aligns with ethical values and contributes to a more just and equitable world.

Two, PR must seek to amplify the marginalized voices, seeking to actively elevate the perspectives of those who are often unheard is crucial for creating a more inclusive and representative narrative.

Three, PR Professionals must connecting purpose with performance, demonstrating how organisational actions align with stated values and contribute to positive societal impact is essential for building trust and credibility.

Building trusted relationships and developing strong rapport with decision-makers and stakeholders could also increase the likelihood of your message being heard and acted upon.

Further, strategic and assertive communication must articulate concerns and advocate change while maintaining respect and professionalism is vital for effective communication.

Importantly, PR strategies seek to provide alternatives and the strict recommendations. We need to offer decision-makers a wide range of evidence-backed alternatives backed by documentary advice on the recommendations and their outcomes to ensure accountability.

We need to also dwell on issues and not the personal, focusing on the problem at hand, avoiding personal attacks or being on the defensive rope.

Undoubtedly, our discussions in the piece demonstrate that, in this age and veritable the arena of distrust and polarisation and the “tribalism of thought”, PR professionals have a critical and crucial role to play in understanding the ethics of the profession, fostering unity and making the impact on the publics and society.

“Speaking to Power” is one portent skill in PR to help organisations , the publics and society face the myriads of maintaining trust, and creating a more positive future for all stakeholders.
A Final Reflection

As PR professionals, when are work is done well, it becomes invisible and powerful. Happily, it’s the steady hand that shapes understanding; it’s the quiet architect of public trust. We don’t always need the applause.

Our work must be tempered with authenticity, restraint, and wisdom.

Remember that – the next time people wonder why a PR person isn’t the loudest in the room, know that, they might be asking the wrong question. The real measure is not who is loudest, but whose message stays long after the noise fades…

PR , in this country, I suggest, is turned into an arena of showmanship and “godfatherism”

Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations honour Auberon Jeleel Odoom

0

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has conferred its highest honour, the GFD STAR Award, on disability rights advocate Auberon Jeleel Odoom, in recognition of his contributions to inclusion and empowerment.

The award was presented at the Federation’s inaugural Excellence Awards Ceremony, held to commemorate the National Day of Persons with Disabilities at the West African Genetic Medicine Centre, near the University of Ghana Medical Centre.

The ceremony brought together local and international advocates, policymakers, and organisations committed to advancing disability rights. It celebrated individuals and institutions whose work has had a tangible impact on accessibility, empowerment, and the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

Described in his citation as a “pathfinder and pacesetter,” Mr Odoom was recognised for his leadership and technical expertise in shaping inclusive systems both in Ghana and beyond. His work spans grassroots mobilisation and high-level policy development, covering areas such as education, employment, social protection, and humanitarian action.

Nationally, he played a pivotal role in drafting Ghana’s first Disability Inclusion Coordination Mechanism, designed to harmonise interventions across government ministries. He also chaired the drafting of Ghana’s first Disability Manifesto for Political Parties, which has become a model across Africa for ensuring political accountability on disability inclusion.

Alongside his work with GFD, Mr Odoom has consulted for international organisations including UNICEF and UNDP. His input has ensured that programmes such as cash transfer monitoring in Ghana’s drought-prone northern regions are accessible to persons with disabilities.

His influence also extends across Africa, where he serves as Secretary General of the African Disability Forum and chairs the board of Inclusion Africa. For nearly a decade, he has represented the continent on the Council of Inclusion International, advocating for African perspectives on intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Mr Odoom’s dedication to mentoring the next generation of disability advocates was also highlighted. His advocacy has led to the inclusion of disability modules in teacher training curricula and has created new employment pathways for persons with disabilities in both the public and private sectors.

The presentation of the GFD STAR Award was described as not only a personal accolade but a symbol of what is possible when expertise, commitment, and compassion converge.

The 2025 Excellence Awards, organisers noted, mark a turning point in Ghana’s disability inclusion agenda, setting a new national standard for recognising and celebrating excellence in advocacy and empowerment.

Health Ministry condemns attack on health workers at Ridge Hospital – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The Ministry of Health has strongly condemned an attack on health professionals at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), describing the incident as an act of aggression that threatens the safety of healthcare providers and patients.

This follows the circulation of a video showing relatives of a patient and some health workers engaged in an altercation at the hospital’s emergency department during an emergency case.

In a statement signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, on Monday, August 18, 2025, the Ministry said the assault on health workers at the hospital’s emergency department was unacceptable and compromised the delivery of critical healthcare services.

The Ministry announced immediate measures to address the situation, including tightening security at the facility and launching investigations into the circumstances that led to the reported delay in care.

Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has since visited the hospital and assured management and staff of the Ministry’s support and protection.

The statement further urged the public to exercise patience, cooperation, and mutual respect to enable health professionals to provide timely and effective care.

‘Mediocre propaganda’ – Kwakye Ofosu slams Assafuah over Mahama jet claims

0

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has strongly refuted claims by Old Tafo Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Ekow Assafuah that President John Dramani Mahama travelled abroad on an expensive private jet.

President Mahama left the country on Sunday, August 17, for a two-nation official visit to Japan and Singapore, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and attracting investments to Ghana.

Assafuah in a Facebook post claimed that the jet, which allegedly departed Accra on Sunday August 17 around 7 a.m., could cost an estimated $15,000 per hour to rent, leading to a speculative total of $690,000 for the journey if it covered stops in Japan, Singapore, Germany, and finally back to Accra.

“Damnnnnnn!!!!!!” the MP exclaimed at the end of his post, a reaction that sparked further attention and debate on social media.

Describing the allegation as “a mediocre attempt at propaganda,” in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday August 18, Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the MP’s statements as baseless and misleading, asserting that President Mahama flew on a commercial Emirates flight during his trip to Japan.

“Clearly the MP in question is dabbling in a mediocre attempt and propaganda,” the minister said. “He does not have any facts. He is just wasting everybody’s time with claims that are false. President Mahama has not travelled by private jet. Indeed, President Mahama travelled to Japan via Emirates, and it is something that you can check. It is not a secret.”

Ofosu further described the claims as “a shambolic effort at propaganda which has badly backfired”, urging the public to disregard what he termed a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the president with misinformation.

He emphasised that President Mahama’s travel arrangements are transparent and verifiable, and accused the MP of attempting to score cheap political points without verifying the facts.

Encroachers have no ownership rights over Borteyman lands – TDC Ghana – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

TDC Ghana Ltd has dismissed claims by a group of developers alleging legitimate ownership of lands at Borteyman, describing them as illegal encroachers.

In a statement responding to a press conference held by the developers on August 18, TDC explained that the disputed lands fall within the Tema Acquisition Area, where all allocations are vested solely in TDC Ghana Ltd.

The company emphasised that any ownership claim or allocation outside this legal framework is “invalid.”

TDC further explained that on Friday, August 15, 2025, it undertook an exercise to remove unauthorised containers sited on lands that had already been allocated to duly registered applicants. It cautioned that holding a business operating permit from the Tema West Municipal Assembly does not legitimise unlawful land occupation.

Citing Section 236 (1) and (2) of the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), TDC reminded the public that no interest or right can be acquired through unlawful occupation of public land, and adverse possession does not confer ownership.

The company advised interested parties to follow the proper procedures by applying directly to TDC Ghana Ltd for land allocations, subject to availability.

“TDC remains committed to protecting its legally mandated lands and will not hesitate to take the necessary steps, in accordance with the law, to safeguard the public interest,” the statement said.

Bimbilla NDC Zonal executives protest over School Feeding allocation – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Zonal constituency executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bimbilla constituency of the Northern Region are protesting the allocation of schools under the School Feeding Programme.

According to the group, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North, Abdul Somed Hamza Gurundow, had initially assigned schools in their respective zones to them. However, they allege that the slots have since been taken over by individuals from outside the area.

Some Zonal Coordinators who spoke to the media insisted that unless the decision is reversed, they will not permit anyone else to cook in their communities.

The agitation intensified during a meeting where the Northern Regional Coordinator for the School Feeding Programme, John Mahama Cherity, addressed caterers in Bimbilla.

In an interview with Channel One News, some of the NDC zonal executives expressed frustration, claiming they are being sidelined in the programme.

“The issue is that schools were allocated to us according to our zones, but we have now been told we will no longer feed them. We don’t understand why the schools given to us have been taken away. People from Tamale and other areas are rather being brought in to feed schools in Nanumba North.

“Meanwhile, we are all party members who worked hard for the party’s victory, so we also deserve to benefit. No official communication has been given to us. When we spoke to the MCE, he said the matter was beyond him and directed us to the Regional Minister. We have since been calling, but there has been no response,” one of the NDC Zonal Coordinators said.

Another NDC Zonal Constituency Coordinator said, “We have seen other people presenting their appointment letters to the various schools. We were initially informed about the School Feeding Programme, but we have been sidelined. They have failed to give us our appointment letters. We will not allow outsiders to take over the programme in our communities.”

A different coordinator added, “We will not permit anyone from outside to take our slots. We supported the party to win the elections, and we also deserve our share.”

When contacted, the Regional Coordinator for the School Feeding Programme declined to comment.

President Mahama Resumes Official Duties; Embarks On Official Visit To Japan & Singapore

0

President John Dramani Mahama has commenced a significant diplomatic mission, departing Ghana on Sunday, August 17, 2025, for official visits to Japan and Singapore as part of his administration’s strategic efforts to strengthen Ghana’s international partnerships and attract investment.

The two-nation tour represents a key component of the President’s foreign policy agenda, aimed at deepening bilateral relations, expanding trade opportunities, and fostering cooperation on shared development priorities between Ghana and these Asian economic powerhouses.

US State Department revokes 6,000 student visas

0

The State Department has revoked more than 6,000 international student visas because of violations of US law and overstays, the department told the BBC.

The agency said the “vast majority” of the violations were assault, driving under the influence (DUI), burglary and “support for terrorism”.

The move comes as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on immigration and international students.

While the State Department did not specify what they meant by “support for terrorism”, the Trump administration has targeted some students who have protested in support of Palestine, arguing they had expressed antisemitic behaviour.

Of the 6,000 student visas that were revoked, the State Department said about 4,000 of those were revoked because visitors broke the law.

Another 200-300 visas were also revoked for “terrorism done under INA 3B”, the State Department said, referring to code that defines “terrorist activity” broadly as acts that endanger human life or violate US law.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration paused scheduling visa appointments for international students. In June, when they restarted appointments, they announced they would ask all applicants to make their social media accounts public for enhanced screening.

They said they would search for “any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States”.

State Department officers were also instructed to screen for those “who advocate for, aid, or support designated foreign terrorists and other threats to national security; or who perpetrate unlawful anti-Semitic harassment or violence”.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers in May that he estimated “thousands” of student visas had been rescinded since January.

“I don’t know the latest count, but we probably have more to do,” Rubio told US lawmakers on 20 May. “We’re going to continue to revoke the visas of people who are here as guests and are disrupting our higher education facilities.”

Democrats have pushed back against the Trump administration’s effort to revoke student visas, describing it is an attack on due process.

More than 1.1 million international students from over 210 countries were enrolled in US colleges in the 2023-24 school year, according to Open Doors, an organisation that collects data on foreign students.

You can’t bring me down – Stonebwoy fires haters

0

Dancehall powerhouse, Stonebwoy, has once again set social media abuzz with a thought-provoking post condemning what he has described as a growing culture of “disrespect for cheap entertainment” online.

In his message, the ‘Not Again’ hitmaker expressed frustration over the tendency of some individuals to hide behind social media platforms to spew hate, ridicule, and negativity, often using such behaviour as a coping mechanism for their own misery.
