MOH postpones planned Centralised Nursing and Midwifery Licensing Examinations to September 4, 2025

0

The Ministry of Health has postponed the planned Centralised Nursing and Midwifery Licensing Examinations to September 4, 2025.

In a statement, the Ministry explained that the decision was taken after a consultative meeting with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions (COHHETI).

It said the exams would now be held in the respective training institutions, as was previously the practice.

This, according to the Ministry, will ensure smooth participation and effective supervision by the NMC.

The Ministry added that the directive followed careful consideration of the risks associated with students traveling long distances to sit for the exams.

The Ministry assured stakeholders that the needed logistics would be provided to make the new arrangement successful.

It also announced that the NMC would release a revised timetable and detailed guidelines in due course.

It further expressed appreciation to candidates, training institutions, and stakeholders for their cooperation and understanding.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the move was necessary to protect the safety and well-being of candidates while ensuring fairness and proper monitoring of the examinations.

He stressed that it was not appropriate for students to travel from one region to another to take part in the exercise.

GRA to slash effective VAT rate from 22% to 20%

The Acting Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Anthony Sarpong, has disclosed that the final Value Added Tax (VAT) rate that will be paid by businesses is expected to be reduced from 22% to 20 % from 2026.

According to him, this is part of the government’s move to reduce the tax burden on Ghanaians.

Why BoG stopped large corporates from withdrawing FX – Banking consultant explains

He noted that the reduction is expected to be captured in the upcoming 2026 budget in October 2026.

“The new VAT bill should be ready by September this year and that should help the Finance Minister lay it before the end of 2025,” Sarpong revealed.

GUTA calls for fair, uniform tax system for businesses

The Commissioner General explained that the Value Added Tax is applied on the value added to goods and services at each stage in production and the distribution chain.

This adds up to the final price that the consumer pays for the goods and services.

Here is a breakdown of the 22% VAT applied on goods:

VAT standard Rate – 15%

National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) – 2.5%

Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) – 2.5%

COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy (COVID-19 HRL) – 1%

Sarpong added that the GRA has so far made progress on reforms that are seeking to simplify the current VAT laws as well as the whole tax structure in the country.

“We are currently at the last phase of engagement, and everything should be finalised by September this year,” the Commissioner General said.

He added that the authority has also “come very far” in removing the COVID-19 Levy as well.

He therefore rejected claims that the expected 20 percent effective VAT rate is too high, adding that, “We are working very hard to improve compliance and that could see the government reduce the rate further going forward”.

Inside Uganda-US deal on unwanted migrants

0

Uganda has agreed to accommodate a yet-to-be-specified number of migrants from other African countries deported from the United States as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Daily Monitor broke the story on August 4 that Kampala was scrambling to strike a deal with the Trump administration to avoid Washington’s proposed full or partial visa ban on Ugandan passport holders and the 15 percent tariffs on all Ugandan exports to the US.

Officials involved in the negotiations told this newspaper that Kampala had until August 1 to agree to a “deal or at least show commitment to the terms” by the set deadline as part of the Trump administration’s push for “deals”– [limited] arrangements on a wide range of issues—with many countries around the world.

Kampala agreed to accommodate African deportees as long as they did not have a prior criminal record. On Tuesday, the American news channel, CBS News, quoting US government documents, reported that Washington had closed the deal with Kampala.

However, it remains unclear how many unwanted migrants Kampala accepted to take in or when deportation flights to Entebbe International Airport will begin. CBS News reported that Washington has reached a similar arrangement with Honduras in Central America.

Since returning to the White House in January, President Trump pledged the largest domestic deportation operation in US history by ramping up deportation flights, including to third countries, and invoking the infrequently-used 1798 Alien Enemies Act.

The New York Times reported in July that deportees had been sent to El Salvador, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Jamaica, and Haiti. In Africa, repatriations have been reported to South Sudan, Lesotho, and Eswatini. According to CBS News, the agreement with Uganda is based on a “safe third country” provision of US immigration law that allows officials to reroute asylum-seekers to countries that are not their own if Washington determines that those nations can fairly hear their claims for humanitarian protection.

High stakes discussions

The US embassy in Kampala declined to be drawn into “private diplomatic negotiations.” “The State Department is doing everything possible to support the President’s policy of keeping Americans safe by removing illegal aliens who have no right to be in the United States,” the embassy told this newspaper in response to our inquiries. The State Minister for International Relations, Mr Henry Oryem Okello, however, dismissed the reports as “lies and rubbish.” “It is true we have ongoing discussions with our friends, the United States, but on visas, tariffs, sanctions, and returning to African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), but there is no discussion whatsoever on illegal aliens from the US,” Mr Oryem said.

He added: “You are talking about cartels, drug dealers, who are not wanted by their own countries. Why would Uganda accept them? It would be very unfair to the general Ugandan population.” Mr Oryem said while Uganda is known globally for its magnanimous refugee policy, which includes giving refugees plots of land to farm and allowing refugees to stay for long periods, but there are limits to it. “You see, the refugees are housed in certain districts, where they live harmoniously with the local communities because it’s the same tribes across borders. How do we deal with those people coming from America? How do you integrate them with communities? We can’t rush into such an arrangement without preparations,” he added.

Asked why CBS News was reporting authoritatively on a matter Kampala was describing as “ongoing negotiations” and whether the deal was closed by State House, Mr Oryem defended that: “In any case, it would be us [Ministry of Foreign Affairs] to sign the arrangement. I don’t know of any deal signed.”

He added: “The US wants to throw out the people you are talking about. Why would Uganda take them in? Under what arrangement? Do we have facilities to host them? I think it would just be unfair to Ugandans.” On the other hand, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Adonia Ayebare told Daily Monitor last night that negotiations, including a framework on immigration and adhering to visa requirements, have been ongoing for months.

“We are actively engaged with the US side on tariffs and immigration, but I am not at liberty to go into the specifics,” Ambassador Ayebare said from New York City, US. Ambassador Ayebare is part of the select committee, also comprising Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Secretary to Treasury, Ramathan Ggoobi, which President Museveni constituted to negotiate with Washington through their embassy based in Kampala.

Scratch my back diplomacy

The American political digital newspaper, Politico, reported on July 30 that South Sudan, which previously had rejected accepting unwanted migrants, had acquiesced to the proposal and urged the Trump administration to also consider lifting sanctions on senior politicians and military brass accused of corruption, human rights abuses and abetting fighting. In Uganda’s case, several politicians including Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and her husband Moses Mogogo and top military brass are under US sanctions.

President Trump announced 10 percent tariffs on all Ugandan exports to the United States in early April, which were increased to 15 percent in late July. The State Department also in June recommended 36 countries, 25 being African, including Uganda and Tanzania, for full or partial suspension of entry “if they do not meet established benchmarks and requirements within 60 days.” The State Department cited, among other concerns, the lack of cooperative or competent governments by some countries singled out to produce reliable quality identity documents, not cooperating to remove nationals from the US, and citizens of countries overstaying their visas.

While the deal will likely improve the Kampala regime’s diplomatic standing in Washington, the Kyadondo East MP and shadow Foreign Affairs minister Muwada Nkunyingi urged Washington not to drop its guard in pushing the government on good governance and human rights issues. “Commenting about specifics of the deal we have not seen might be speculative, but what we are certain about is that with the Kampala regime’s troubling image on human rights and governance, this is a deal they would rush into to clear their image now that we are heading into the 2026 elections. They did the same thing with Afghan asylum seekers in 2021 when we were fresh from the ugly elections,” Mr Nkunyingi said.

Uganda was among half a dozen countries that Washington courted to offer temporary haven to Afghan asylum seekers who assisted the US and its western allies during the 20-year war, after Taliban fighters, deposed by the American troops two decades ago, ousted Ashraf Ghani’s government and bounced back to power.

The Taliban fighters barrelled to power with limited resistance, capturing Kabul with ease to the world’s surprise, prompting the US to lead the evacuation of trapped local allies and other fleeing citizens. Following high-level discussions and a memorandum of understanding, Kampala committed to take in some 2,000 Afghans.

Despite Washington’s discontentment and sanctions on top Ugandan politicians and military brass in the wake of the blood-stained 2021 election campaigns, the former US President Joe Biden hosted President Museveni to a dinner at the White House after the second US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in December 2022.

Mr Oryem defended that the difference with the arrangement on Afghan asylum seekers is “they were only in transit in Uganda and the US was taking care of their temporary stay in Uganda.” “Even before, Israel tried to bribe us with money to take in Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees and asylum seekers, but we refused. So there is no precedent as you claim,” he added. In 2015, Israel hatched a plot to get rid of unwanted Sudanese and Eritrean asylum seekers by giving them between $8,000-$7,000 to voluntarily move to Uganda and Rwanda in violation of international refugee statutes.

Rwanda similar deal

The United States and Rwanda also agreed for the African country to accept up to 250 migrants deported from the US, the spokesperson for the Rwandan government and an official told Reuters, as President Donald Trump’s administration takes a hardline approach toward immigration. The agreement, first reported by Reuters, was signed by US and Rwandan officials in Kigali in June, said the Rwandan official, speaking on condition of anonymity, adding that Washington had already sent an initial list of 10 people to be vetted.

‘‘Rwanda has agreed with the United States to accept up to 250 migrants, in part because nearly every Rwandan family has experienced the hardships of displacement, and our societal values are founded on reintegration and rehabilitation,’’ said the spokesperson for the Rwandan government, Yolande Makolo. ‘‘Under the agreement, Rwanda has the ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement. Those approved will be provided with workforce training, healthcare, and accommodation support to jumpstart their lives in Rwanda, allowing them to contribute to one of the fastest-growing economies in the world over the last decade.’’

The White House and State Department had no immediate comment. The Department of Homeland Security referred questions to the State Department.

President Donald Trump aims to deport millions of immigrants in the US illegally, and his administration has sought to ramp up removals to third countries, including sending convicted criminals to South Sudan and Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland. Rwanda has, in recent years, positioned itself as a destination country for migrants that Western countries would like to remove, despite concerns by rights groups that Kigali does not respect basic human rights

In May, the foreign minister said Rwanda was in the early stages of talks to receive immigrants deported from the United States.

Mesmerizing Short Hairstyles You Can Create This Week with Attachment

0

Short hairstyles have a way of exuding boldness, confidence, and effortless style. When enhanced with attachments, they offer even more possibilities for creativity and flair. Whether you’re looking for a chic everyday style or something glamorous for a special outing, there’s a short hairstyle with attachment perfect for you this week.

One of the most popular options is the pixie cut with braided extensions. This style gives you a neat yet stylish look that frames your face beautifully. By adding colored attachment such as burgundy, honey blonde, or ombré tones, you can give your hairstyle a vibrant twist without committing to permanent dye.

If you prefer something with more texture, curly short styles made with attachment are an excellent choice. Soft, bouncy curls bring a playful and youthful vibe, while tighter coils create a bold, fashion-forward appearance. You can opt for a side part or full fringe to add character to the overall look.

For those who love braids, a short bob with neat braids using attachment offers both convenience and elegance. This style is low-maintenance and can last for weeks while still looking fresh. Adding bead accents or gold cuffs can give your hairstyle a trendy, statement-making finish.

Another stunning idea is the short Ghana weaving style. It’s sleek, timeless, and can be customized with patterns or colors to suit your personality. The best part is that it protects your natural hair while giving you a polished appearance.

These short hairstyles are not only fashionable but also practical, especially for busy women who want to look stylish without spending hours styling daily. They’re perfect for work, casual outings, and even special events.

Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has called on stakeholders, particularly workers’ unions to engage actively in social dialogue and collaboration in addressing labour related challenges.

Speaking at the opening session of the Industrial And Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana 12th Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference, at the University Of Professional Studies, Accra, yesterday, Dr. Pelpuo said by prioritising open communication, mutual respect, and trust, stakeholders can unlock the full potential of the various workforce and drive productivity, innovation, and growth.

“I am optimistic about the future of our workplaces. With continued social partnership, I believe that we can create a thriving work environment that is conducive to employee well-being, creativity, and productivity,” he said.

The sector minister noted that the role of social partners is important as through collaborating and sharing knowledge, stakeholders can build a more resilient and sustainable economy that benefits all Ghanaians.

ICU Commendation

He further commended ICU-Ghana for its unwavering dedication to promoting the welfare of workers and contributing significantly to nation building.

“With rich legacy spanning decades, ICU has consistently demonstrated its commitment to advancing the interests of its members. Your range of services do not only underscore your strategic importance within Ghana’s economy but also highlight your pivotal role in fostering a more equitable and prosperous society,” he added.

He, thus, called for the ICU to work closely with his ministry to create an enabling environment that fosters innovation, creativity, and efficiency.

“To create a collaborative and supportive work environment, the role of employers is key in fostering employee motivation and productivity…This requires fostering a culture of togetherness and teamwork at the workplace for increased collaboration and productivity. Social dialogue is a crucial aspect of building a positive and productive work environment. By prioritizing social dialogue, we can create a more collaborative and successful workplace,” he added.

ICU- Ghana General Secretary, Brother Morgan Ayawine, in his speech said true productivity does not only come from capital injection or rigid oversight, “It arises when workers are empowered, mentally, physically, and emotionally. We must invest in their growth, ensure fair and transparent promotion systems, and cultivate a sense of creating opportunities at all levels in fulfilment of Government’s reset agenda.”

He said ICU has blazed the trail by motivating its own staff for increased productivity through massive promotions and restructuring of salaries among other incentives which are worthy of emulation.

“We are actively pursuing similar interventions in the Cocoa and Textile sectors among others and hopefully these interventions would be successful,” he said.

Mr. Morgan further called on the government to revive distressed State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), including PBC PLC, Cocoa Processing Company, Neoplan Ghana Limited, ALUWORKS, Volta Star Textiles Ltd,  Akosombo Industrial Company Ltd, New Times Corporation, Graphic Communications Group Ltd, and Pwalugu Tomato Factory, to drastically reduce youth unemployment..

DVLA sends important message amidst EOCO’s probe into Shatta Wale’s car [Listen]

0

Public Relations Manager of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Francis Asamoah Tuffour, has urged Ghanaians to exercise strict due diligence before purchasing vehicles, stressing that failure to do so could lead to dire consequences.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem following the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) recent investigations, Mr Tuffour warned that neglecting proper checks is “like gambling with your money and reputation.”

He recalled his personal experience in 2017 when he attempted to purchase a car in Tema. Before finalising the deal, he contacted the Criminal Investigations Department’s (CID) INTERPOL Unit to run background checks.

“They wrote to the US for verification, and the feedback confirmed the same details I had before I bought the car. That gave me confidence,” he explained.

According to him, buyers who skip such checks risk discovering too late that the vehicle is stolen.

“If it turns out the car belongs to someone else, not only have you wasted your money, but your image will also be dented,” he said.

Mr Tuffour emphasised that unless one is buying a brand-new car or purchasing from a credible automobile company, background verification should never be downplayed.

He further explained that the DVLA itself conducts verification processes before registering vehicles.

“When you bring your car to DVLA, we contact Customs to confirm ownership before issuing registration, number plates, and roadworthy documents,” he noted.

Drawing an analogy, he likened car purchases to banking.

“I have never seen anybody who goes to the bank and leaves his money with the security man to deposit for him. In the same vein, you should not entrust such huge investments, whether it is GH₵20,000 or GH₵40,000, to just anyone,” he advised.

Mr Tuffour added that the DVLA is available to assist the public with the necessary checks before transactions are completed.

“We know people work hard for their money. Protect it by verifying ownership before you buy a vehicle,” he cautioned.

The warning comes as EOCO investigates whether a vehicle linked to dancehall artiste Shatta Wale was fraudulently acquired.

Caritas Ghana launches Five-Year Strategic Framework to aid marginalised groups

0

By Joyce Danso

Accra, Aug. 22, GNA – Caritas Ghana, a development and humanitarian arm of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, has launched its Five-Year Strategic Framework in Accra to strengthen collaboration for human development.

The 2025 to 2030 strategic framework seeks to, among other things, provide good governance, justice and peace building as well as foster participation in accountability, peaceful elections, and support migrants, refugees and displaced persons.

The strategic framework was launched at the Caritas Ghana Donors Conference, on the theme: “Strengthening Collaboration for Integral Human Development in Ghana.”

The High-level conference brought together donor agencies, government officials, development partners, civil society leaders and representatives of the Catholic Church to explore pathways for stronger collaboration in advancing human development in Ghana.

Its previous strategic framework (2017-2021) brought out some challenges and implementation lacunas such as funding and donor fatigue and disconnection between ideas and field-level operation, hence the new strategic framework.

Dr Fritz Gockel, a development leader and former Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana, commended Caritas Ghana for the tremendous support towards the marginalised and vulnerable in various communities in Ghana and beyond.

“You indeed have brought hope to countless people through your flagship programme, which have impacted on migrants and refugees and same have been a beacon of hope for many children and their families,” he said.

Dr Gockel lauded the organisation for constantly reviewing and retooling its systems and practices before coming out with the new strategic framework.

He said reviewing and retooling its systems would make it a more relevant and efficient system than other institutions that brought hope to the poor and vulnerable.

Dr Gockel noted that prioritising the needs of the poor was not only an act of charity but a matter of justice, recongnising the dignity and rights of the poor, which were often overlooked or not respected in social, political and economic systems.

He was elated at the focus on Sustainable Agriculture and Livelihoods, Environment, Water, Sanitation and Health (WASH) and Climate Change, Emergency Preparedness and Response and Social Services among others to ensure the welfare of the vulnerable.

Dr Gockel noted that the strategies captured in the new framework would go to the heart of what development was all about.

“These strategies aim at reducing poverty and promoting agriculture, food security, and diversified income sources through climate-smart agricultural practices,” he said.

“It would also promote climate resilience, natural resources conservation, and sustainable farming and water management practices.”

He urged Caritas Ghana to align itself and be guided by the National Development Planning Commission’s Coordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development Policies.

Dr Gockel tasked it to mainstream its local operations with the various district assemblies to achieve the desired impact.

“A definitive institutionalised engagement with the district assemblies would reinforce Caritas Ghana’s commitment to emergency preparedness, community resilience, and ensuring that the voices of women, youth and persons with disability are heard and valued.”

The Most Reverend Matthew K. Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, noted that the global landscape of development was shifting, and donors’ priorities were evolving.

He said aid resources were becoming more constrained as challenges confronting communities were deepening in complexity.

“Confronted with this reality, we have chosen not to retreat, but to respond with courage and vision. Out of an honest appraisal of our strength and shortcomings, we have crafted the strategic Framework 2025-2030, our bold blueprint for institutional renewal,” the Most Rev. Gyamfi said.

“This is not mere rhetoric. It is a concrete programme of reform. It calls us to strengthen governance, refine systems, and enhance our capacity for monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning.”

“In practice this means fortifying diocesan development offices, adopting tools that ensure results are carefully tracked and centering local leadership in all that we do.”

Mr Richard Akurugu, the Executive Director, Caritas Ghana, said the organisation would continue to offer social services by improving access to quality education and primary healthcare, especially for marginalised and vulnerable communities.

Former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir Hammond, has slammed his successor, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, for supposedly claiming that his (KT Hammond’s) mother was a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the former legislator asserted that although his mother, during her active days, was a member of the 31st December Women’s Movement of former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, it did not mean that she was a member of the NDC.

He pointed out that many other women in those days, like his mother, were members of Nana Konadu’s movement.

He went on to slam Dorgbadzi-Dorani over his claims, describing him as an alien in the Adansi Asokwa constituency.

“What upset me was when he delved into my parentage and my mother. I have got a battalion in the NDC; some of my very, very good friends are in the NDC, but it is not a party that I want to belong to. There is a KT Hammond battalion in the NDC, from high up to the bottom, they are there.

“But I don’t have that political inclination or philosophy, and then you tell me that my mum was NDC… This ‘alien,’ who has been in the constituency for 8 years or so, comes in here and starts saying, ‘your mother was NDC,’ it is completely unfair,” he said.

Why companies buy music catalogues and how they make their money back

0

Companies makes profit through catalogues in film and ads Companies makes profit through catalogues in film and ads

When MOG Beatz recently called out Shatta Wale, for allegedly selling his music catalogue to a foreign company for millions of dollars and removing his producer credits, the Ghanaian entertainment industry was shaken.

This development brought to light other artistes, including prominent names, who have also sold their catalogues.

It also raised an important question: why international companies buy music catalogues, and how they make money from music that, in some cases, are years or even decades old?

Some Ghanaian musicians who have allegedly sold their music catalogues

The answer lies in the rights that come with owning a music catalogue.

These catalogues are more than just collections of old songs; they are valuable assets. Companies that acquire them can reuse, license, and monetize the music in various ways, from film and TV placements to streaming, sampling, and commercial use.

Seven Xavier, President of the Ghana Music Alliance, discussed some of the reasons why international companies buy music catalogues and how they profit from them during an interview on Hitz FM on August 21, 2025.

You sell my beats, erase my credit, then buy luxury cars – MOG Beatz blasts Shatta Wale

Movies and television

One of the most common ways catalogue owners make money is through sync licensing, placing songs in films, TV shows, and streaming productions.

A single placement can bring in tens of thousands of dollars, sometimes more, depending on the size of the project.

Advertising

Adverts are another lucrative avenue. Global brands pay hefty licensing fees to use songs in commercials because music adds instant recognition and emotion to campaigns.

A song from Shatta Wale’s catalogue could be licensed for a beverage, telecom, or fashion brand’s campaign across Africa or even beyond.

Social media

In today’s market, TikTok has become a major driver of music revenue. Catalogues often get revived by pushing old tracks into new viral challenges.

A catchy chorus from years ago can suddenly take over TikTok trends, and that renewed interest leads to more streams on sites like Spotify, Apple Music, and Boomplay.

AI and data

Catalogues are increasingly valuable for AI companies training their systems to understand music from different regions and cultures.

With Ghanaian music catalogues, international buyers could feed songs into AI platforms to analyse rhythms, lyrics, and styles for future products, whether that’s music recommendation engines, sound libraries, or even generative music software.

“Most of the songs that have been bought, you ask yourself how they’re going to make the money off it. That means the company that put the money would probably be actively trying to get the songs in movies, songs in adverts, on TikTok or other platforms, and get people to use it to rack up those numbers.

“Because when you think about it, most of our songs, they almost die after like a year being out. You know, so you’re asking yourself, why is the Chinese company coming to buy these? What are they going to use it for? Maybe just even maybe they are creating an A.I. platform where they need to learn our Ghanaian music,” Seven Xavier, President of the Ghana Music Alliance explained.

Adorable Holiday Hairstyles Little Girls Can Rock with Confidence

0

This holiday season is the perfect time for little girls to try out beautiful and creative hairstyles that make them look and feel extra special. Whether it’s for a festive family outing, birthday celebration, church event, or just looking cute while visiting grandma, the right hairstyle can bring joy, comfort, and style all at once.

One go-to option that’s both protective and stylish is braided styles. Think box braids, cornrows, or knotless braids decorated with colorful beads or rubber bands. These styles last longer through the holidays and allow your little one to play freely without worrying about daily touch-ups. Opt for side partings, zigzag patterns, or even a heart-shaped design to add fun and personality.

For a simpler but equally pretty look, consider twists or two-strand twist-outs. They’re gentle on the hair and easy to maintain, especially when moisturized properly. You can style them into buns, double puffs, or a half-up ponytail to keep it fresh throughout the week.

Another trending option is the shuku Ghana weaving with a front style. It’s neat, elegant, and easy to accessorize with ribbons or floral clips. If she prefers her natural hair, try a fluffy Afro with a center part, styled with an embellished headband or bow.

For quick styling, rubber band hairstyles are playful, colorful, and perfect for short hair. Combine them with mini twists or puff balls for a complete look. These styles also give you the flexibility to change designs weekly during the holiday.

With the right hairstyle, little girls can enjoy the holidays looking cute, confident, and camera-ready. Plus, choosing low-manipulation styles ensures their hair stays healthy and protected throughout the fun-filled break.

“I Am Not In Retirement… Watch This Space” – KT Hammond Eyes 2028 Parliamentary Comeback

0

The former Adansi Asokwa MP, Kobina Tahiru Hammond, has hinted at a potential return to the political arena in the 2028 elections as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking after the Obuasi High Court dismissed his petition challenging the victory of Godwin Dorani of the National Democratic Congress, Hammond confirmed he is not stepping away from politics.

“I am not completely in retirement. I had to return to my law books to sharpen a few things. But I am not in retirement, if that is what you think. In any event, as I said, watch this space,” Hammond told journalists.

Hammond expressed concerns over the 2024 parliamentary election results, suggesting that the NDC’s win was influenced by irregularities rather than electoral merit.

He pointed to ballot boxes discovered at unauthorised locations, stating that the situation contributed to his defeat.

He also cited voter turnout issues, noting that some supporters of his New Patriotic Party did not cast their ballots, a factor he believes played a decisive role in the December 7 election outcome.

These circumstances, Hammond argued, made the electoral process in Adansi Asokwa “beyond description,” highlighting his frustration with what he described as a chaotic voting process.

With ambitions to reclaim his seat, Hammond is positioning himself for a strong comeback, potentially adding to a long and distinguished parliamentary career.

Producer Price Inflation Drops To 3.8%

0

The Producer Price Inflation (PPI) fallen to 3.8% in July 2025, the lowest level since November 2023, according to new data released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The figure represents a decline from 5.8% in June, marking the sixth consecutive month of slowdown in producer price growth.

The PPI, which tracks average changes in factory gate prices received by domestic producers, stood at 262.5 in July, up from 258.2 in June and 253.0 in July 2024.

On a year-on-year basis, the 3.8% increase means producers received nearly 25 percentage points less in price growth compared to July 2024, when inflation peaked sharply.

On a month-to-month basis, producer prices rose by 1.6% between June and July, signaling moderate upward price pressures in the short term despite the broader slowdown.

The decline was largely driven by two heavyweight sectors – mining and quarrying, which saw inflation ease from 6.5% in June to 4.6% in July, and manufacturing, which dropped from 7.2% to 3.6% over the same period.

Together, these sectors account for nearly 80% of the PPI basket and were responsible for the bulk of the slowdown.

By contrast, electricity and gas recorded an uptick, rising from 5.1% in June 2025 to 6.7% in July 2025. Water supply, sewerage, and waste management also edged higher to 4.1%.

Transportation and storage costs continued their downward slide, falling further from -7.0% in June to -8.1% in July, while accommodation and food services remained flat at -2.7%.

The Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, noted that falling producer prices could offer relief to businesses and households if the savings are passed down the value chain. “If these savings reach consumers, we could see real relief,” he said.

The GSS advised businesses to take advantage of falling input costs to rethink pricing strategies and innovate rather than merely adjust prices.

It also recommended that government consolidate stability and support production in key sectors to sustain momentum, while urging households to monitor retail prices to ensure the benefits of reduced producer costs are reflected in consumer markets.

The latest data underscores a broader cooling trend in producer inflation, offering potential respite for the country’s economy amid efforts to stabilise the foreign exchange market and ease cost pressures on businesses.

NDC opens nomination process for Tamale Central by-election

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Friday, August 22, officially opened nominations for its parliamentary primaries in the Tamale Central Constituency.

This development comes in the wake of the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who lost his life in the tragic helicopter crash on 6 August that claimed the lives of eight people.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 20, and signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party explained that nomination forms would be available for collection and submission at the NDC Northern Regional Office.

The nomination process, which began today, August 22, is scheduled to close on Sunday, August 24.

The statement further detailed the guidelines governing the primary, indicating that a certified delegates’ list would be released to aspirants once the vetting exercise has been completed.

It added that nomination forms are priced at GH₵5,000, while the filing fee stands at GH₵40,000. However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities will receive a 50 per cent concession on the filing fee.

Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed that it will not contest the Tamale Central by-election.

According to the party, this decision is in respect of the late MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, whose sudden passing has left a significant void in the constituency.

Focus on policy, not divisive tactics

Media personality, Paul Adom-Otchere, has urged Ghanaian politicians to focus on addressing core policy challenges rather than resorting to divisive tactics, warning that such practices could pose serious risk to the country’s political space.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, August 22, 2025, Adom-Otchere stated that many politicians fail to tackle substantive policy issues and instead take advantage of situations for political gain.

“When politicians don’t want to put in the work to address the hard-core policy issues, then you find them dabbling in politicking to score political points,” he explained.

He cautioned against turning tragedies like plane crashes or drunk driving accidents into political talking points.

Adom-Otchere also raised concerns about false narratives being deliberately crafted to damage reputations.

“If they say that we saw this politician and he nearly knocked down a lady; then he is very lucky. Did he knock down the lady? No, he didn’t but he nearly. But propagandists will capitalise on such and say that let’s go and say, ‘he knocked down the lady’,” he said, urging for truthfulness in political communication.

Higher cocoa prices unlikely to benefit Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire

0

File photo of cocoa beans File photo of cocoa beans

Research firm Fitch Solutions has revealed that despite global cocoa prices soaring to record levels in 2025, top cocoa-producing countries such as Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are unlikely to reap the full economic benefits.

Data shows that average cocoa prices reached US$8,900 per tonne between January and July 2025, more than triple the long-term average of US$2,500 per tonne recorded from 2005 to 2023.

According to Fitch, while prices are expected to gradually ease to around US$6,900 per tonne between 2026 and 2030 as global supplies recover, they are still projected to remain well above historical levels.

Ghana currently pays the highest farmgate prices in West Africa – COCOBOD

However, Fitch Solutions cautions that these elevated prices are unlikely to translate into major economic windfalls for the region’s top cocoa producers.

“Our view that structurally higher cocoa prices will not create major economic windfalls for Africa’s cocoa-producing nations in the coming years rests on three key factors,” Fitch noted.

Why prices are not helping enough

The first major factor is the pricing mechanism. Both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire use government-controlled marketing boards to set farmgate prices, the amount paid to farmers.

While both countries have increased farmgate prices in recent seasons, Fitch points out that the gap between farmgate and international prices remains wide.

Secondly, fiscal and operational constraints limit how much of the global price increase can be passed on to local farmers.

Although farmer incomes have improved somewhat, they still fall significantly short of global benchmarks, reducing the broader impact on household spending and domestic economic activity.

As a result, even with cocoa prices at historic highs, many farmers and national economies are missing out on the full potential benefits.

When Daddy Lumba was alive, one could follow him around and still not gain entry into his house. But after his death, they opened the door for both friends and even enemies to enter; that is why his soul isn’t at peace,” he said.

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced these gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, ultimately aiming to strengthen the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Friday, August 22, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

BoG’s quarter-ounce gold coin opened August trading at GH¢9,586.49

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢19,430.58.

FIFA imposes transfer ban on Hearts of Oak over unsettled $150,000 debt

FIFA has hit Hearts of Oak with a transfer ban FIFA has hit Hearts of Oak with a transfer ban

In a blow to Accra Hearts of Oak’s rebuilding plans, FIFA has imposed a sweeping transfer ban, both domestically and internationally, against the Ghanaian giants after the club failed to settle an outstanding debt to former Technical Director Rene Hiddink.

A letter dated 21 August 2025, issued by FIFA’s Legal and Compliance Division and addressed via the FIFA Legal Portal, confirmed that the registration ban will remain in place until the full amount owed is paid and for a maximum of three entire and consecutive registration periods.

The US$150,000 debt stems from Hiddink’s wrongful termination claim. Having been hired in July 2023 under a three-year contract, the Dutch tactician exited after just eight months, citing unfair dismissal. FIFA ruled in his favor, ordering compensation to be paid by Hearts of Oak.

This sanction delivers a serious setback as the Phobians prepare for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season. Without the ability to register new players, the club’s squad-building efforts are effectively paralyzed.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has also been instructed to enforce the ban at the national level.

Eugene Boakye Antwi, a General Secretary hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated the conditions under which former Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, would be reaccepted into the party.

Speaking to Nhyira FM in Kumasi on Friday, August 22, 2022, Mr. Antwi, who is a former Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region, said Mr. Kyerematen must reapply to join the party if he wishes to return.

“Because he voluntarily resigned from the party, if he wants to rejoin, he must reapply. If he doesn’t reapply, it means he’s not ready to return, and no one can force him,” he said.

Mr. Antwi, who is seeking to become the NPP General Secretary ahead of the 2028 elections, made these remarks while responding to efforts currently being made by the hierarchy of the party to bring back all disgruntled members.

Watch the video below:

Why Alan Kyerematen resigned from the NPP

Alan Kyerematen was a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and held the position of Minister for Trade and Industry under President Akufo-Addo from 2017 to 2023.

He had previously served in the same role under President John Agyekum Kufuor from 2001 to 2007.

However, as the 2024 presidential elections approached, Alan Kyerematen fell out with the NPP leadership after losing the party’s flagbearer race to then-Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

He accused the NPP of rigging the primary election in favour of Dr. Bawumia in November 2023.

Following this, Mr Kyerematen left the party to establish the Movement for Change.

This was not his first departure, as he had also left the NPP in 2007 after losing the flagbearer race to Nana Akufo-Addo.

For the 2024 elections, Alan Kyerematen decided to run as an independent candidate, despite his Movement for Change.

NPP grants amnesty to suspended members

Meanwhile, the NPP has granted amnesty to all its members who were suspended as well as those whose disciplinary cases are pending.

In a letter dated Saturday, August 16, 2025, the Acting Chairman of the NPP, Danquah Smith Buttey, said the decision was taken at an emergency meeting called by the National Council on July 25, 2025.

According to the letter, the decision was aimed at promoting unity and reconciliation in the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Mahama holds talks with UN Secretary-General on sidelines of TICAD-9 in Yokohama

0

Accra, Aug 22, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral talks with Mr António Guterres, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General on the sidelines of Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) in Yokohama, Japan.

A statement issued by Ghana’s Presidency said the discussions centred on multilateral cooperation, Ghana’s economic rebound, and escalating security challenges in West Africa.

Higher cocoa prices unlikely to benefit Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire

0

Fiifi Boafo’s COCOBOD claims false and misleading – NIA Deputy CEO – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Alhaji Mohammed Nasiru, has rejected allegations made by former Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, Fiifi Boafo, describing them as propaganda and an attempt to mislead the public.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, August 21, Alhaji Nasiru said Mr. Boafo’s claims about sidelined directors at COCOBOD were baseless and intended to stir unnecessary public alarm.

“Even the statement coming from Fiifi Boafo raises a very big alarm. Why Fiifi Boafo? What is he expecting them to do within the organisation? Maybe he has blocked them, and he is not able to get what he wants.

Even though he is outside the organisation, he is jittery and worried, so he needs to make noise for them to be put back there so he can continue benefiting from what he intended before the reshuffle,” he alleged.

He further stressed that the comments were nothing more than propaganda.

“Fiifi Boafo’s comment is just rhetoric and propaganda. He just intends to throw dust in the eyes of the people,” he said.

Mr. Boafo had earlier alleged, in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, August 19, that more than 10 experienced directors at COCOBOD had been asked to stay home while still receiving full salaries, despite contributing nothing to the state agency’s operations. He described the situation as a wasteful use of public funds.

COCOBOD has, however, strongly denied the claims, describing them as “false and misleading.” According to its management, no director has been instructed to stay home while still drawing a salary.

Heighten Surveillance at Ports to Curb Stolen Car Trade – Anti-fraud analyst

0

Anti-Fraud Professional and Lecturer, Ransford Nana Addo Jnr, has called for stricter checks at Ghana’s ports and customs to stop stolen vehicles from entering the country.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show during a discussion on the stolen car trade in Ghana and the recent case involving musician Shatta Wale’s vehicle, Nana Addo Jnr said the problem stems from weak surveillance systems at entry points.

“Irrespective of who is buying the vehicle, whether an importer or dealer, so far as it gets to the shores of this country or borders, if we are working with our international partners like the FBI and Interpol, and a vehicle is branded as stolen, we should ask the authorities questions – how did these vehicles get registered in this country?” he asked.

He noted that many Ghanaians assume cars cleared by customs are genuine.

“The average Ghanaian would take the duty document and car papers and say that so far as customs has actually stamped it, it is genuine. So if customs has given the go-ahead, and it goes through licensing, people assume the process is clean,” he said.

According to him, the real weakness lies at the ports. “I think the point where we need to tighten will be at the ports and our customs. Whether it is an importer or an individual, the collaboration between our security agencies has to be on point,” he stated.

He referenced the ongoing case involving Dancehall Artist Shatta Wale, whose vehicle was recently seized by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after being flagged as stolen.

“Indeed, if this is a 2019 vehicle and we assume it was stolen about a year ago, by now it should have been flagged on the various portals of the CID, DVLA, and Customs division. We should not have waited for the FBI to come into town. If we had already received notification that this vehicle was stolen, then it should never have passed through our system in the first place,” he explained.

He added that even if international notifications arrive late, Ghanaian authorities should be able to trace and impound such vehicles before foreign agencies intervene.

“There are very luxurious vehicles in town being driven by some people, and you notice that the vehicle registration doesn’t match the year of manufacturing. That should be a red flag,” he cautioned.

You have no legitimate excuse – Bidema tells Shatta Wale

0

Shatta Wale was detained by EOCO on August 20, 2025 Shatta Wale was detained by EOCO on August 20, 2025

Constitutional lawyer, Raymond Bidema, has strongly asserted that Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, has no legitimate excuse to justify his alleged purchase of the stolen Lamborghini Urus.

Speaking to Tutuwaa Danso on Starr Today on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Bidema urged celebrities and public figures like Shatta Wale to exercise due diligence when making high-value purchases.

“It is not a sufficient defence, in my opinion, because the circumstances surrounding the purchase of the car are quite problematic. The price at which the vehicle was sold is not comparable to something like kelewele that one might casually buy from a roadside vendor,” Bidema stated.

He stated that the matter raises serious legal red flags: “These are the kinds of issues that a court or an investigative body would carefully examine to determine whether the buyer may have had prior knowledge or played a role in suspicious activity. First of all, the car was reportedly purchased above typical market value, which is, in itself, a red flag. Secondly, the buyer doesn’t even know the identity of the seller, nor is there any receipt or documentation to support the transaction. This is not a minor item purchased for 100 cedis; it is a car worth $150,000.”

Bidema went on to caution that making such a high-value purchase without proper verification or documentation should raise concerns for any reasonable person.

“When purchasing a vehicle, standard procedure requires documentation: registration papers, transfer of ownership, and so on. Was the seller in possession of these documents? If so, under whose name were they registered? If there was no paperwork at all, that could suggest the car was unlawfully acquired, and the buyer may be held liable for taking possession of a potentially stolen vehicle.”

The legal expert concluded by urging influential personalities to lead by example and avoid reckless behaviour that could encourage illicit transactions.

Asantehene's Chief Linguist (with microphone) announcing the plans for the Asantehemaa's burial Asantehene’s Chief Linguist (with microphone) announcing the plans for the Asantehemaa’s burial

The Chief Linguist of the Asantehene (Otumfuo Akyeamehene), Nana Nsuase Poku, has issued a strong warning to the people of Asanteman regarding the burial of the kingdom’s late queen mother, the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

Announcing the plans for the burial on behalf of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the one-week observation of her demise at the Manhyia Palace, Nana Nsuase Poku said that no person should be seen on the streets on the night the queen mother is buried at Bantama.

He stated that anyone found on the streets that evening would have only themselves to blame.

“On Thursday (September 18) afternoon at 1:00 pm, we will have the final funeral rites at this same park to say farewell to our mother. That day is a solemn day. That day, Asanteman will make no noise. No shop will open, nobody is to go anywhere. We are coming to mourn our mother.

“In the evening, mother will be buried at Breman, Bantama. That evening, we are not to meet anybody. We are not to meet any human being. You will have yourself to blame if we meet you,” the linguist said as he announced the burial plans for the late Asantehemaa.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II announced the death of the Asantehemaa on August 11, 2025.

Born Nana Ama Konadu, Nana Konadu Yiadom III was the 14th Asantehemaa.

She was the biological sister of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

She became the Asantehemaa in 2017, following the death of her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the then Asantehemaa.

Nana Konadu Yiadom, the second most powerful person in Asanteman, was respected for her loyalty, counsel, strength, and devotion to tradition.

The untold family struggles of football’s biggest stars

0

When footballers step onto the pitch, we see the polished product: the lightning sprints, the dazzling tricks, the medals glistening under the floodlights.

What we don’t see is the turmoil that shaped them: scars carved long before the fame, pain endured long after the cheers fade.

For some of the game’s most recognizable stars, family life was no sanctuary. It was instead a battlefield of betrayal, abandonment, and tragedy.

Dele Alli

In July 2023, Dele Alli stunned the world with his raw honesty. Sitting down for an interview, he revealed the horrors of his childhood that had remained buried for years.

At just six years old, he was sexually abused by a friend of his alcoholic mother.

By eight, he was drawn into the dangerous world of drug dealing, hiding substances inside footballs and delivering them by bike.

Balotelli Opens Up: Ghanaian parents abandoned me as a 2-year-old

His childhood was a maze of trauma, and at eleven, he faced another nightmare when a man threatened his life and hung him off a bridge.

At twelve, his life took a different turn. He was adopted by a foster family who gave him the love and stability he had long been denied.

Yet even as his footballing talent flourished, the past clung to him.

In 2016, already a rising star at Tottenham Hotspur, he decided to drop his surname “Alli” from his shirt, explaining he felt no connection to the family name.

Later, as his career wavered and sleeping-pill addiction pulled him down, he checked himself into rehab.

Jakub Błaszczykowski

For Jakub Błaszczykowski, the nightmare came early. At ten years old, the Polish midfielder watched his father stab his mother to death.

The trauma of that moment could have shattered him forever. Orphaned, he was raised by his grandmother, who became both guardian and anchor.

Yet football offered him a fragile escape. Each time he stepped onto the pitch, he carried his mother’s memory with him.

His goals for Poland and Borussia Dortmund were never just for himself, they were tributes to the woman he had lost so violently.

During his time in the Bundesliga, as he lifted trophies and became a national hero, fans celebrated his resilience, often unaware of the pain that fueled every step.

Jesse Lingard

At Manchester United, Jesse Lingard’s smile made him seem like one of football’s most carefree characters.

But behind the smile, he was carrying a crushing responsibility. In 2019, when his mother was hospitalised with severe depression, Lingard became the guardian of his younger siblings, Jasper and Daisy-Boo.

Suddenly, the pressure of Old Trafford was only half his world; the other half was making sure his brother and sister were safe, fed, and cared for.

The strain began to break him. By January 2020, Lingard admitted he had hit “rock bottom,” confessing he felt like he was moving on autopilot, numb to life.

Fans abused him after poor performances, unaware that he was collapsing inside. He turned to alcohol, desperate for escape. It was only during the COVID-19 lockdown, when football paused and he rediscovered old highlights of himself, that he found the spark again.

Emmanuel Adebayor

For Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor, the biggest battles of his life were not fought in the Premier League or Champions League, they were fought with his own family.

Adebayor has long spoken openly about the toxic dynamic he endured, saying relatives viewed him as nothing more than a cash machine.

His bitterness spilled out in interviews and on social media, where he claimed his brother had even written to Real Madrid to sabotage a permanent move when he was on loan there, urging the club not to sign him.

Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli’s life has always been framed by questions of identity. Born Mario Barwuah to Ghanaian parents, he was placed in foster care at just three years old.

Misunderstandings, resentment, and poverty complicated his relationship with his birth parents, and as he rose to fame, those divisions grew sharper.

Even as his biological family sought reconciliation, Mario chose to remain with his foster parents, the Balotellis, who had given him stability when his life was in chaos.

His decision brought criticism and tabloid drama, painting him as distant from his roots.

But for Mario, it was a choice born of loyalty to the people who had raised him.

Pele’s Son Edinho

Edson “Edinho” Cholbi do Nascimento grew up under a shadow bigger than any player has ever known: being the son of Pele.

He followed his father into football, even playing as a goalkeeper for Santos, the club where Pele became immortal. But instead of glory, his career descended into scandal.

In 2005, Edinho was arrested during a massive police operation against drug gangs in Santos.

The investigation tied him to laundering money for traffickers. Years later, in 2014, a Brazilian court sentenced him to 33 years in prison for money laundering.

After appeals, the sentence was reduced to nearly 13 years, and in 2017, he turned himself in to begin serving his time.

By 2019, he had moved into a semi-open regime, but the damage to his life and reputation was irreparable.

Memphis Depay

When Memphis Depay lines up for the Netherlands, fans see just his first name. The omission of “Depay” is deliberate, a symbol of a childhood scar.

Memphis’s father abandoned the family when he was only four years old, leaving his mother to raise him alone in a small Dutch town.

The absence cut deep. Memphis has often spoken about the loneliness of growing up without his father’s presence, and dropping his surname became his way of reclaiming his identity.

Years later, he reconciled with his father, but the pain of those formative years lingers.

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool’s captain and defensive leader is another who uses his shirt to tell his story. When Virgil was eleven, his father abandoned the family.

Virgil lived briefly with him, but ultimately chose to return to his mother, after which his father severed ties altogether.

Unlike most players, Van Dijk refuses to wear his surname. Instead, his shirt simply reads “Virgil.” It is not a branding decision, but a personal statement, a refusal to honour a father who walked away when he was needed most.

Muslim women petition court to decriminalise abortion in cases of rape, others

0

L-R: Muhammad Mariam, Shakira Nabagolooba, Yasimin Kiriswa, Haura Nalubega at Constitutional court L-R: Muhammad Mariam, Shakira Nabagolooba, Yasimin Kiriswa, Haura Nalubega at Constitutional court

Two Muslim women leaders and a faith-based women’s rights organisation have petitioned the Constitutional Court seeking a declaration that Uganda’s restrictive abortion laws are unconstitutional for failing to provide exceptions permitted under Islamic jurisprudence and international human rights standards.

The petitioners, Hajira Gimbo, Deputy Executive Director of the Islamic Women’s Initiative for Justice, Law and Peace (IWILAP), Zaituna Mutesi, a community leader and Amira in Budaka District, and IWILAP itself are challenging sections 130, 131, and 207 of the Penal Code Act, which criminalise abortion except in very narrow circumstances.

They argue that the law unjustly discriminates against Muslim women by disregarding circumstances such as pregnancies resulting from rape, incest, mental illness of the mother, or situations where the mother’s mental health and dignity are at serious risk.

“The law as it stands denies Muslim women the ability to make faith-based reproductive health decisions that are permitted under Islam. Islam allows termination before ensoulment (120 days into pregnancy) and in cases where the mother’s life, mental health, or dignity is at risk,” Ms Gimbo stated in her affidavit.

The petition, filed under Articles 22, 29, 33, 37, and 137 of the Constitution, asserts that the current law violates rights to equality, dignity, freedom of religion, and protection from inhuman treatment. Article 33(6) of the Constitution expressly prohibits laws or traditions that undermine the status and dignity of women.

The petitioners say this protection is undermined by the Penal Code’s blanket criminalization.

Ms Mutesi, who serves as Secretary for Women’s Affairs at Masjid Salama in Budaka, said women in rural communities often suffer in silence after rape or incest because of the stigma and criminal penalties attached to abortion.

“Many Muslim women are forced to carry pregnancies that are a constant reminder of trauma. This not only violates their dignity but also subjects them to cruel treatment contrary to the Constitution,” she said.

Citing Islamic principles and international law, the petitioners draw on Qur’anic verses and Hadith that emphasize rahma (mercy) and adl (justice). They note that ensoulment is believed to occur at 120 days, after which abortion is generally prohibited except where the mother’s life is at risk.

They also relied on comparative jurisprudence from Muslim-majority countries such as Tunisia, which permits abortion within the first three months, and from African states like Zambia and Rwanda, which recognize exceptions for rape, incest, and threats to a woman’s mental health.

“Uganda cannot continue to lag when our sister African states have already harmonised reproductive rights with both religion and constitutional guarantees,” reads part of the petition.

The petition further cites Uganda’s obligations under the Maputo Protocol and CEDAW, which call on states to respect women’s reproductive rights and ensure access to safe abortion in cases of sexual violence. According to the Ministry of Health’s 2019/2020 performance report, unsafe abortion contributes up to 11 percent of maternal deaths in Uganda.

The petitioners want the Constitutional Court to declare sections 130, 131, and 207 of the Penal Code unconstitutional and order Parliament to amend them within a year to provide abortion exceptions in line with Islamic teachings, cultural values, and international law. They also want doctors who perform abortions under these exceptions to be shielded from criminal liability.

“Our demand is not for blanket legalization of abortion. We are calling for recognition of exceptional circumstances—rape, incest, mental illness, risk to mental health, and preservation of dignity—that Islam and the Constitution already allow,” IWILAP said in a statement.

EOCO Reveals Shatta Wale’s Strange Claim On Lamborghini

0

More details are emerging from the interrogation of Dancehall superstar Shatta Wale, and they raise more questions than answers, according to a report by Modernghana.

According to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the musician could not provide any credible documents to prove ownership of the 2019 Lamborghini Urus at the center of the fraud investigation.

Instead, EOCO says Shatta Wale simply claimed he purchased the car “from the street” and from an individual he vaguely identified as “ZAK.” Investigators found this explanation unsatisfactory, especially since the vehicle has been directly linked to a $4 million fraud case prosecuted in the United States.

The US District Court in Kentucky ordered the Lamborghini forfeited earlier this month after concluding that it was acquired with illegal funds by Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian who is now serving a prison sentence in America.

EOCO seized the car from Shatta Wale in May, sparking widespread debate and speculation about how the artiste came into possession of such a luxury vehicle.

Although Shatta Wale has been released on bail, the lack of proper ownership documentation continues to hang heavily over the case. Many Ghanaians are questioning why a public figure of his stature would risk acquiring such an expensive vehicle without valid papers.

Meanwhile, his spokesperson Sammy Flex has urged fans to stay calm and positive. “We are grateful for the support. The good news is that Shatta Wale has been released… and he will speak soon,” he reassured.

The revelation about “ZAK” has added fuel to the controversy, with social media users mocking the explanation and demanding EOCO dig deeper. Others argue that this case will either expose a major criminal network or prove Shatta’s carelessness in his dealings.

For now, the fate of the Lamborghini is sealed, but the bigger question remains whether Shatta Wale himself will face further charges in the fraud case.

Courier service operators in Accra have expressed frustration after more than 150 riders were arrested in a joint crackdown by the Ghana Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC).

The arrested operators, many of whom work through ride-hailing platforms say they have been left without adequate support to meet licensing requirements and are struggling with the high costs involved.

“Now they say we should pay GH¢1,070 before we can work. If you don’t, you’ll pay GH¢600 as a fine. We are calling on them to reduce the price,” courier operator Daniel Laryea told Citi Business News.

Another operator, Emmanuel Nkebi, argued that digital platforms should shoulder more responsibility:

“We pay for Yango, so we are like third-party workers. If there’s an issue, they should go after Yango, not us. But instead of holding them accountable, they are coming after us who are working under them.”

Despite the grievances, regulators maintain the clampdown is necessary to sanitise Ghana’s booming courier and logistics sector.

The Commission said unlicensed operators not only evade taxes but also pose significant consumer protection and security risks.

Public Relations and Consumer Manager at the Commission, Edwin Nii Yeboah Burgesson, explained that businesses had been given a two-month grace period to comply but many ignored the directive.

“Because of the delivery services they are offering, the law mandates them to come for that license. Section 10 of the Act makes it a criminal offense to operate delivery services without a license from the Commission,” he said.

The arrests highlight ongoing tensions between regulators, ride-hailing platforms and operators in a sector seen as critical to Ghana’s e-commerce and logistics ecosystem.

The social media personality, who refers to his online platform as the “University of Wisdom and Understanding,” has been making waves with his unconventional approach to advising men on relationships and finances.

“Jesus! University of wisdom and understanding, the only university where once you graduate, woman go fear to ask you for money.”

Describing himself as the “first illiterate to find a university in the history of Nigeria,” Geh Geh reflected on his unlikely rise to fame, saying, “I no be graduate too, but by the grace of God, I don find school. I be orphan, but now Nigerians don show me love.”

According to him, the gifts received during the live were worth approximately $30,000, a feat he described as life-changing.

BoG directs Banks to discontinue payment of FCY cash to large corporations that do not have supporting equivalent prior cash deposits.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has observed with concern the growing practice of foreign currency (FCY) cash withdrawals by Large corporations that are not directly funded by prior FCY cash deposits. The BoG noted that the practice by such bulk oil distribution companies, mining companies, and other similar actors within the space exerts avoidable pressure on the foreign exchange market and also undermines efforts to ensure stability.

Accordingly, with immediate effect, all banks are directed to discontinue the
payment of FCY cash to Large Corporations, unless such transactions are fully
supported by equivalent FCY cash deposits lodged by the same institution.
Banks, the statement said, must also retain proper documentation to confirm the source of funds for every payout.

The statement issued by the Bank and signed by Ms. Aimee V. Quashie on behalf of the Secretary assured that the Bank of Ghana remains committed to supporting the operations of large corporations, recognizing their critical role in sustaining petroleum supply, mineral exports, and other essential sectors of Ghana’s economy.

She also disclosed that the Bank, in partnership with the Government, has put in place mechanisms to source and provide foreign exchange liquidity to meet legitimate import obligations of Large corporations. These measures, she explained, are designed to safeguard market stability while ensuring that vital supply chains remain uninterrupted.

‘We expect all banks to comply strictly with this directive and to co-operate fully with the BoG in ensuring that available foreign exchange resources are applied efficiently and transparently, ’ the statement emphasized, adding that non-compliance would attract appropriate regulatory sanctions.

The statement requested all the relevant industry associations to bring this directive to the notice and attention of their members and accordingly ensure their adherence.
