UN human rights chief accuses Rwanda-backed rebels in eastern DR Congo of killing and recruiting children

The UN human rights chief accused Rwanda-backed rebels who seized a second major city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) of killing children and attacking hospitals and warehouses storing humanitarian aid.

Volker Türk said in a statement Tuesday that his office “confirmed cases of summary execution of children by M23 after they entered the city of Bukavu last week. We are also aware that children were in possession of weapons.”

He provided no details or did not refer to specific events, but UN agencies have previously accused both Congolese government forces and the rebels of recruiting children. The United Nations Human Rights Council earlier this month launched a commission that will investigate atrocities, including rapes and killings akin to “summary executions” committed by both sides since the beginning of the year.

The M23 rebels on Sunday captured Bukavu, a city of 1.3 million people, after seizing Goma, 101 kilometers (63 miles) to the north last month. At least 3,000 were reported killed and thousands displaced in the Goma fighting.

The M23 is the most prominent of more than 100 armed groups vying for control of eastern DRC’s trillions of dollars in mineral wealth that’s critical for much of the world’s technology. The rebels are supported by about 4,000 troops from neighboring Rwanda, according to UN experts.

Rwanda accuses DRC of enlisting Hutu fighters responsible for the 1994 genocide of minority Tutsis and moderate Hutus. M23 says it’s fighting to protect Tutsis and Congolese of Rwandan origin from discrimination and wants to transform DRC from a failed into a modern state — though critics say it’s a pretext for Rwanda’s involvement.

Unlike in 2012, when the M23 briefly seized Goma and withdrew after international pressure, analysts have said the rebels this time are eyeing political power.

The decades-long fighting has displaced more than 6 million people in the region, creating the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

A Ugandan military official said Tuesday that Ugandan troops had entered the eastern Congolese city of Bunia to assist the Congolese army in quelling deadly violence by armed ethnic groups.

Mahama apologises to Christian leaders over Education Forum invitation delay

0

President John Dramani Mahama has apologised to the Christian Council of Ghana and the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference for the delay in extending invitations to them for the ongoing National Education Forum in Ho.

His apology follows concerns raised by the two Christian bodies in a press statement, expressing their disappointment over being excluded from the crucial discussions on Ghana’s education system. The Forum, launched on Tuesday, February 18 in the Volta region, aims to bring together key stakeholders to deliberate on policies and reforms in the education sector.

Addressing the issue at the forum’s launch, President Mahama acknowledged the oversight and reassured religious leaders of his government’s commitment to inclusivity in national dialogues on education.

“Let me express my sincerest apologies on behalf of the planning committee of the forum to our stakeholders of the faith-based organizations for the unpardonable omission committed in your delayed invitation to this forum,” he stated in the Volta Regional capital.

He emphasized that the mistake had been quickly rectified but still warranted an apology.

“The omission was very speedily remedied, but you still deserve an unqualified apology for this oversight,” he added.

Recognizing the vital role religious organizations play in education, Mahama expressed confidence that they would extend their understanding.

“And since you are the purveyors of God’s mercy on Earth, I’m sure that you have forgiven us… And we know you’re important stakeholders because you own some of the schools, and so this educational forum is important to see how we carry everybody together.”

The National Education Forum brought together education experts, policymakers, civil society organizations, and religious leaders to explore strategies for strengthening Ghana’s education system.

Discussions are expected to focus on key issues such as curriculum development, teacher training, infrastructure challenges, and the role of faith-based institutions in shaping the country’s educational landscape.

Despite the initial oversight, the participation of faith-based organizations in the forum is expected to contribute significantly to the discourse, given their long-standing involvement in the provision of quality education across the country.

Communication Minister orders shutdown of Gumah FM in Bawku over security concerns

0

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has ordered the immediate shutdown of Gumah FM, a radio station in Bawku.

It follows the urgent national security concerns raised by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

The directive comes after an emergency REGSEC meeting held on February 11, 2025, where intelligence reports indicated that Gumah FM was being used as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in Bawku and parts of the North East Region.

Citing Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), the government directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to enforce the station’s closure in the interest of national security and public order.

As part of the enforcement measures:

Gumah FM must immediately cease all broadcasting operations.
Authorities will monitor the situation to prevent the creation of alternative platforms that could propagate violence or instability.

The Communication Minister reiterated the importance of responsible media practices, urging all broadcasters to adhere strictly to their frequency authorisation conditions.

“The government remains committed to preserving national security, public safety, and the rule of law.”

CLUB FRIENDLY: Heart of Lions secure dramatic win over Hearts of Oak at Kpobiman

0

Accra Hearts of Oak suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Heart of Lions in a club friendly on Tuesday afternoon.

The game started with both teams struggling to convert their chances in the first half.

But the visitors broke the deadlock through Ebenezer Abban’s strike from the penalty spot during the 63rd minute.

The Rainbows, however, pressed high in a search of an equaliser, which came in the 90th minute when Seth Osei scored his debut goal.

Despite conceding late, Heart of Lions quickly restored their lead through Seedorf Asante Afful, who capitalised on Hearts’ poor defending to score, which gave the visitors an important win at Kpobiman.

The contest looked destined for a draw until Afful came off the bench and popped up with the crucial goal in added time.

Coach Bashir Hayford will hope his team can continue this imperious form when the league returns, but Coach Aboubakar Ouattarra will hope he can fix these errors before the league returns.

With the Ghana Premier League put on hold, both teams are expected to feature in warm-up games to keep their form in shape.

Accra Hearts of Oak are level on points (33) in fourth, behind Lions on goal difference after matchday 19.

Temporarily suspend operations of all forex bureaux

0

The Movement for Change, one of the independent political groups in the 2024 general elections, has charged the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, to dissolve all forex bureaux in the country to allow foreign currencies to be exchanged directly at commercial banks.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, February 18, the spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah Danquah, called on the government to completely overhaul the forex sector, scrap levies such as the betting tax, and maintain the flat rate for Micro, Medium and Small Enterprises (MMSEs).

The Movement believes this will go a long way in restoring financial confidence in the financial sector.

“The stabilisation of the local economy is of prime importance in maintaining a healthy economy. In this regard, while working towards a more robust and comprehensive medium to long-term solution, particularly in the area of boosting exports and enhancing import substitution, the ministry should introduce some short-term policy interventions designed to regulate the demand and supply of foreign exchange.

“In this regard, government should suspend with immediate effect until further notice. The operation of all forex bureaux and mandate all forex transactions to be conducted through the commercial banks and the Bank of Ghana. In addition, government-existent regulations on the retention of frauds from export revenue must be strictly enforced.”

I am no longer with the Fourth Estate- Manasseh Azure Awuni reveals

0

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has noted that he is no longer with the Fourth Estate and the Media Foundation For West Africa (MFWA).

The Fourth Estate is an investigative institution which has undertaken investigations into various activities over the years. The latest investigative work undertaken by the Fourth Estate is the National Service Secretariat scandal.

In the NSS Scandal, officials at the National Service Authority (NSA) allegedly circumvented mandatory validation processes for payments of allowances to national service personnel, enabling thousands of nonexistent names to be added to the payroll.

This made it easy to use the ghost names to drain the public purse of millions of Ghana cedis in allowances intended for national service personnel.

Meanwhile, the Media Foundation for West Africa, the parent company of the Fourth Estate, works to promote freedom of expression, press freedom, access to information, internet freedom and media development.

Manasseh Azure Awuni has worked for the two esteemed organisations since he left the Multimedia Group. But in a Facebook post, the outspoken journalist emphasized that he no longer works for the aforementioned institutions.

He thanked those tagging him for the staggering revelation in the NSS Scandal but pointed out that he is no longer part of the team.

“Thank you for the mentions, but let me state once again that I’m no longer with The Fourth Estate, the MFWA’s project,” he posted.

Manasseh Azure Awuni is currently schooling in the USA. It is unclear if he will return to work with the two companies after his education or not.

In a move to sanitize the airwaves and enforce strict adherence to frequency authorization laws, the National Communications Authority Ghana has suspended seven radio stations. This directive, issued by Sam Dzata George, was made in two separate cases, with one instance citing national security grounds and the other six cases involving stations broadcasting without valid frequency authorizations.

The suspensions are effective immediately, with further action expected in the coming days. George emphasized the importance of media houses complying with the terms of their frequency authorizations, urging them to ensure they are operating within the law.

This development highlights the National Communications Authority’s commitment to regulating the broadcasting industry and ensuring that all stations operate within the legal framework. The authority’s actions aim to promote fair competition, protect consumers, and maintain national security.

NPP National Organiser sues government over termination of post-election appointments

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has filed a lawsuit challenging what he describes as the unlawful termination of appointments for individuals employed both before and after December 7, 2024.

Nana Boakye argues that the directive, issued by the Chief of Staff on February 10, 2025, is unconstitutional and exceeds her authority.

According to him, the decision violates Article 191(b) of the 1992 Constitution, which protects public service employees from dismissal without just cause.

He explained that neither the Chief of Staff nor the President has the power to arbitrarily revoke legally sanctioned appointments.

As part of his reliefs, he is asking the Supreme Court to declare the directive null and void, prevent government institutions from enforcing it, and affirm that the President is bound to uphold constitutional protections for public sector employees.

He is also seeking an order for the government to cover legal costs.

The Attorney General, who has been named as the defendant, has 14 days from the date of service to file a response to the lawsuit.

Background

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has instructed all heads of government institutions to revoke appointments made by the previous Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024.

This directive was issued in a letter dated February 10, 2025, and addressed to leaders of public institutions.

In the document, Julius Debrah emphasized that appointments and recruitments made after the stated date do not align with principles of good governance.

“In line with the government’s position on end-of-tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to inform you that all such engagements in Ghana’s Public Services after December 7, 2024, are inconsistent with established governance practices,” the letter stated.

Ken Ofori-Atta no longer wanted by OSP

Ken Ofori-Atta, former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta, former finance minister

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has removed former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, from its list of wanted persons following a communication from his legal team confirming his voluntary return to Ghana.

On February 18, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers transmitted a communication to the OSP, providing a definite date for his return to the country.

The OSP, in response to the communication, deemed Ken Ofori-Atta’s stated return date reasonable under the circumstances.

Consequently, the OSP rescheduled the date for Ken Ofori-Atta’s attendance, aligning it with his voluntary return.

As a result of this development, Ken Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s list of wanted persons and is no longer considered a fugitive from justice, pending his return on the agreed date.

The OSP in a letter said, “If Mr. Ofori-Atta fails to voluntarily return to the jurisdiction on or around his stated date, or if he fails to attend the OSP on the rescheduled date, he will be re-entered on the OSP’s wanted list. The OSP will then consider him a fugitive from justice and take all necessary legal steps to secure his return and ensure his attendance at the OSP’s office.”

The OSP reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, emphasizing that all actions will be guided by due process and fairness.

Background

At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng disclosed that all indications suggest Ofori-Atta has absconded from Ghana to evade investigations into alleged corruption.

He stated that Ofori-Atta has two choices; either return to the jurisdiction voluntarily or face the consequences.

The former finance minister is under investigation regarding contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for revenue assurance in the petroleum and minerals sectors.

Another investigation concerns the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Technology Limited for distribution loss reduction and network improvement.

He is also being investigated over procurement, payments, and activities related to the controversial National Cathedral project.

Additionally, he has been linked to contracts awarded by the Ministry of Health initially through the Ministry for Special Development Initiatives to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 305 CDI ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

Furthermore, the OSP is examining payments made from and the utilization of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s tax refund account.

Following these allegations, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng demanded Ofori-Atta’s immediate return to Ghana to face investigations.

Unfortunately, the outbreak has resulted in 16 deaths, while 29 individuals are currently receiving treatment.

Cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) is a serious inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. CSM is a medical emergency that requires immediate medical care.

Symptoms include headache, fever, stiff neck and back, vomiting, joint and muscle pain, drowsiness, light sensitivity and seizures

Addressing Parliament on the outbreak in Accra on Tuesday, February 18, Minister Akandoh identified the most affected districts as Wa Municipal, Nanduli, Wa West, Jirapa, and Nandum.

Despite the significant number of cases and deaths, he assured the public and Parliament that efforts are being made to control the outbreak.

“Mr. Speaker, despite the substantial cases and unfortunate deaths, I wish to assure the House and the good people of Ghana that we have considerable efforts to keep the outbreak under control,” he stated.

Highlighting the positive developments, Akandoh noted that there has been a noticeable decrease in new meningitis cases in the Upper West Region.

“Our efforts are paying off. Already, a wave of improvement is evident in the Upper West Region where new meningitis cases are decreasing,” he said.

The Minister attributed this positive change to the swift and decisive actions taken by the Ministry of Health.

These actions included deploying experts to support local teams, conducting a high-level visit to assess the situation, providing support and ensuring free treatment for all affected individuals.

1 case of Human Metapneumovirus recorded in Ghana – Health Minister

0

Ghana has recorded one confirmed case of the Human Metapneumovirus in the country.

This case was detected from an elderly person out of some 90 samples selected for testing.

The Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh made this known during his appearance before Parliament to brief the House on the state of the public health emergencies in the country.

“Mr. Speaker, we have also identified a single case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the country. In response to recent increases in respiratory cases in China and some temperate countries in December 2024, as part of our routine surveillance, we commenced testing for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) this year, January 2025,” Mr Akandoh informed the House on February 18.

The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause a range of respiratory illnesses, from mild cold-like symptoms to severe pneumonia.

While it can affect people of all ages, it is most commonly seen in young children under 5, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

Already, some countries including China are battling the disease with cases surging on daily basis.

He assured the House that the risk of HMPV in Ghana remains low considering the robust surveillance system in place.

“As you can see, we have robust surveillance systems in place to monitor for respiratory viruses, including HMPV. In fact, these systems have been strengthened in recent years, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. We therefore assure the country that any case of HMPV will be quickly identified and managed to prevent spread,” he assured.

Health officials say they remain on high alert.

Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has disclosed that former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta is expected to return to Ghana in May this year following a medical assessment abroad.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, Afenyo-Markin made these remarks while addressing Parliament on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

Afenyo-Markin stated that Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives have been in contact with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and confirmed his scheduled return.

He added that Ofori-Atta is willing to appear for an in-person interrogation upon his arrival.

“The legal team of the former minister has been in communication with the OSP and has indicated that he is scheduled to return between May 14 and 30, 2025. He is prepared to present himself for questioning upon his arrival,” he stated.

He also read a letter from Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers, explaining the reasons for his absence and confirming his expected return.

“We respectfully indicate that our client, who is due for his return, cannot travel before six to eight weeks post-surgical intervention, as indicated in the hospital’s letter. Considering the scheduled surgery between March 20 and 21 and the necessary recovery period, our client expects to be back in Ghana between May 14 and 30, 2025. We hope this timeline will guide your office in scheduling an in-person appearance,” the letter stated.

The Special Prosecutor had declared the former Minister of Finance a wanted person and fugitive from justice on February 12, 2025.

The basis for the declaration was that Mr. Ofori-Atta had failed to indicate a reasonable time for his return to the jurisdiction, despite being informed by the OSP that he was a suspect in multiple corruption-related cases, for which he had been directed to physically appear before the OSP in Accra on a specified date and time for questioning.

OSP removes Ken Ofori-Atta from list of wanted persons

Ken Ofori-Atta, Former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta, Former Minister of Finance

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has removed former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, from its list of wanted persons following a communication from his legal team confirming his voluntary return to Ghana.

On Tuesday February 18, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers transmitted a communication to the OSP, providing a definite date for his return to the country.

Betting tax to be scrapped in 2025 budget – Minister assures Ghanaians

0

The minister, who assured Ghanaians on the removal of the betting tax reaffirmed the commitment of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to fulfilling its campaign promises, stressing that they will not let Ghanaians down.

The minister explained that the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, is actively working on removing so-called nuisance taxes, including the betting tax, to reduce the financial burden on bettors across the country.

The minister explained that the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, is actively working on removing so-called nuisance taxes, including the betting tax, to reduce the financial burden on bettors across the country.

In August 2023, Ghana introduced a new tax measure that imposed a 10% levy on betting and lottery winnings.

According to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), this withholding tax is automatically deducted at the point of pay-out for all betting, gaming, and lottery wins.

However, in cases where a game is cancelled, and the player’s initial stake is refunded, or if the pay-out amount is equal to or less than the staked amount, the withholding tax does not apply.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, Opare Addo highlighted that President Mahama’s appointees are diligently working to achieve his policy objectives.

“Everybody is committed to meeting the target of His Excellency President Mahama. When the budget is presented in March 2025, all the promises we made regarding tax cancellations will be implemented, and young people should look forward to the cancellation of the betting tax,” he stated.

His comments align with recent reports indicating that Dr Cassiel Ato Forson is making efforts to ensure the betting tax is scrapped in the 2025 budget.

The finance minister is currently engaging with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to eliminate nuisance taxes, including the betting tax..

To facilitate efficient monitoring by tax authorities, lottery operators have been required to update their software to display details of the amount staked, winnings, and the tax withheld during pay-outs.

Edward Gyambrah, Commissioner of the GRA, emphasised that the tax was introduced to enhance domestic revenue mobilisation, citing Ghana’s relatively low tax-to-GDP ratio within the sub-region.

Revenue authorities also issued a stern warning that non-compliance with the new regulations could result in the withdrawal of licences for sports betting firms, lottery operators, casinos, slot machine operators, and marketing promoters.

Ghana recently entered into a three-year IMF bailout programme in May, following a prolonged period of economic difficulties.

As part of efforts to revive the economy, policymakers have emphasized the need to broaden the tax base and enhance domestic revenue collection to steer the country back towards sustainable

MP for Weija-Gbawe calls for greater utilization of pedestrian footbridges to enhance road safety

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib

Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Second Deputy Minority Whip, has expressed concern over the underutilization of pedestrian footbridges in Ghana, urging for increased usage to enhance road safety.

He highlighted the severe consequences of pedestrian negligence, especially in high-traffic areas, which continue to be a major cause of road accidents.

In a statement delivered in Parliament, Jerry Ahmed Shaib emphasized the government’s significant investments in footbridge construction, which are designed to improve safety, particularly in urban centers such as Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.

Despite these efforts, he noted that many pedestrians continue to ignore the footbridges, choosing instead to jaywalk across busy roads.

“The failure to use footbridges not only endangers lives but also results in fatalities and serious injuries,” Jerry Ahmed Shaib stated, citing alarming statistics on pedestrian accidents.

He pointed out that many of these deaths could have been avoided if footbridges were used as intended.

To address the issue, Jerry Ahmed Shaib proposed a comprehensive approach, which includes:

• Public Awareness Campaigns – He called for intensified education on the importance of using footbridges through mass media, schools, and community engagement initiatives.

• Stronger Enforcement of Road Safety Laws – He suggested imposing fines on pedestrians who refuse to use footbridges and on drivers who fail to prioritize pedestrian safety.

• Improved Footbridge Design and Accessibility – He stressed the need for footbridges to be more user-friendly, particularly for the elderly, children, and persons with disabilities. He also called for better lighting and clearer signage to enhance visibility at night.

• Collaboration with Law Enforcement – He recommended that the Ghana Police Service, the National Road Safety Authority, and traffic wardens increase monitoring and enforcement in high-risk areas to ensure compliance.

Jerry Ahmed Shaib also urged the Minister of Roads and Highways to prioritize the completion of the Tetegu footbridge in the Weija-Gbawe constituency, ensuring its swift commissioning for pedestrian use.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. While the government provides the necessary infrastructure, it is up to us as citizens to use them responsibly. Let us work together to reduce pedestrian accidents and make our roads safer for everyone,” he concluded.

His statement highlights the urgent need for a cultural shift in pedestrian behavior to ensure that government investments in road safety infrastructure deliver the intended benefits.

President Mahama is dedicated to ensuring the stability of Ghana's economy President Mahama is dedicated to ensuring the stability of Ghana’s economy

President John Dramani Mahama has reassured that his government will stabilize the economy by cutting out waste and reducing corruption.

Speaking at the Africa Business Forum on Monday, February 17 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the president highlighted his plans and efforts to address the economic challenge Ghana is facing.

President Mahama pointed out the need to examine the real problem Ghana is facing and break down ideas and information to draw a better solution to the challenge.

“In a crisis, the first thing that you do is to focus on stabilizing, and that is what we are focused on—bringing interest rates and inflation down, stabilizing the currency, and dealing with debt overhang. That is where our focus is for now,” he stated

The president stressed that it is important to understand the aspects that led to the crisis and put measures to solve the problem.

“At the same time, we must analyse the factors that brought Ghana to this point and implement steps to ensure we do not end up in this situation again. That will entail strengthening the Fiscal Responsibility Act and the Public Financial Management Act.

“We need to cut out waste and reduce corruption. These are some of the critical issues that must be addressed,” he concluded.

‘Friends turned their backs on me’ – Kwesi Nyantakyi shares heartbreaking experience after Number 12 exposé

Kwesi Nyantakyi is a former President of the GFA Kwesi Nyantakyi is a former President of the GFA

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi has opened up about the devastating toll he endured after being implicated in the Number 12 exposé, revealing that even close friends abandoned him in his time of struggle.

The explosive investigative documentary, led by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and premiered in June 2018, exposed alleged corruption within Ghanaian football.

The footage showed Nyantakyi accepting $65,000 from an undercover reporter posing as a businessman.

As a result, FIFA handed him a lifetime ban from all football-related activities, and then-Attorney General Gloria Akuffo filed formal charges against him, including conspiracy to commit fraud, in 2018.

After the former Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) was acquitted by the Accra High Court on February 13, 2025, he has now shared how the case deeply affected him.

“It’s not a pleasant experience. When you’re faced with a problem, you quickly realize who your true supporters are. Even friends can turn their backs on you, leaving you stressed and overwhelmed. The financial burden of court proceedings is substantial,” he said in an interview with Kessben FM.

Despite the hardships, Nyantakyi credited his faith in God for helping him endure the long legal battle.

“The Lord I serve has been my strength throughout this challenging experience. I’ve seen people take their own lives due to loan defaults, and what I went through would have been unbearable without God’s guidance,” he added.

Nyantakyi served as GFA President from 2006 until his resignation in 2018. His tenure saw Ghana qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2006, marking a historic milestone for the nation.

UN calls for calm as violence flares in South Sudan

Fighting broke out between the South Sudan People's Defence Forces and 'armed youth' in Nasir Fighting broke out between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces and ‘armed youth’ in Nasir

The United Nations has called for calm as it reported deadly clashes in South Sudan have killed civilians and wounded a peacekeeper.

Fighting broke out between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPSF) and “armed youth” in Nasir in Upper Nile state – which borders Sudan – on February 14 and 15, the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said in a statement on Monday.

The oil-rich but impoverished nation, which achieved independence only in 2011, is plagued by instability with frequent clashes and political infighting.

The UN did not identify the armed groups that clashed with the SSPSF, a national military force led by President Salva Kiir, head of the country’s unity government.

The statement said some fighters used “heavy weaponry which has, reportedly, resulted in deaths and injuries to civilians as well as armed personnel”.

It did not give any details on the number of people hurt, but added that a UN peacekeeper on a scheduled patrol was wounded during mortar shelling.

Nicholas Haysom, special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of UNMISS, called for an immediate end to the violence.

“I urge all involved to demonstrate restraint and immediately restore calm. I also strongly condemn any violence against our peacekeepers and reiterate that such actions constitute a violation of international law,” said Haysom.

The UN statement also warned of “persistent tensions” in Western Equatoria state – on the other side of the country – between “organised forces”. It did not give further details.

Haysom said the situation in both locations underscored the need for the full deployment of South Sudan’s unified armed forces.

The country endured a vicious five-year civil war between Kiir and his bitter rival, Vice President Riek Machar. A 2018 peace deal required the unification of armed forces ahead of repeatedly delayed elections.

UNMISS has said the unification of the army has yet to be achieved.

Be calm, CSM and Cholera outbreaks under control

0

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reassured the public that the current outbreaks of Cholera and Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) is under control.

He emphasised that the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service and donor agencies, are actively addressing the situation.

Mintah Akandoh stressed the importance of ongoing public awareness and urged citizens to maintain clean environments, particularly as the rainy season nears, to prevent further disease outbreaks.

He also encouraged people to seek medical attention promptly if they suspect any symptoms of these diseases.

In a media briefing on Tuesday, February 18, following the receipt of medical supplies from the World Health Organisation (WHO) aimed at combating CSM in the Upper West Region, the Health Minister called on donors and the business community to assist in managing the health crises.

“I can confidently say that the situation is absolutely under control. Our health professionals are on top of the issue, and as we have already indicated, WHO has also dispatched some technical assistance to us, and we will be moving all of them to the northern part of the country,” stated Akandoh.

“Again, we have enough antibiotics that we can use to cure the outbreak, but what we have consistently been advocating is the early reporting to health facilities,” he added.

Akandoh’s call for calm and cooperation underscores the efforts being made to control the outbreaks and highlights the critical role of public cooperation in ensuring the effectiveness of these measures.

OSP removes Ofori-Atta from wanted list

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially removed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from its wanted persons list after his legal team communicated his scheduled return to Ghana in May 2025.

This announcement follows a period of uncertainty about Ofori-Atta’s whereabouts, which led the OSP to declare him wanted as part of its investigation into corruption-related offences.

The former minister had been under investigation for alleged financial misconduct during his time in office, but his exact location had been unclear, complicating efforts to proceed with the inquiry.

However, following communications from Ofori-Atta’s lawyers on February 18, 2025, the OSP confirmed that the former minister would return to Ghana on a specified date in May. His legal representatives assured the OSP that Ofori-Atta is fully committed to cooperating with the investigation upon his return.

This development marks a significant shift after the OSP initially declared Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice on February 12, 2025. The OSP had previously directed the former finance minister to attend a scheduled interview in Accra regarding the corruption-related investigations.

The situation changed dramatically after Ofori-Atta’s legal team communicated his intention to return voluntarily to Ghana. The OSP, in response, deemed the stated return date reasonable and agreed to reschedule the interview accordingly.

Consequently, Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s wanted list and is no longer considered a fugitive from justice—pending his voluntary return.

The OSP also made it clear that if Ofori-Atta fails to return to Ghana or attend the rescheduled interview, he will be re-entered on the wanted list and considered a fugitive from justice once again.

The OSP stressed that it will take all necessary legal actions to ensure his return and participation in the investigation.

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a public apology to Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs) for the delayed invitation to the National Education Forum in Ho.

Speaking at the forum’s opening on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the president expressed regret on behalf of the planning committee for the oversight, acknowledging that faith-based organisations are critical stakeholders in the national education conversation due to their ownership of several schools.

“Let me express my sincerest apologies on behalf of the planning committee of the forum to our stakeholders from the faith-based organisations for the unpardonable omission in your delayed invitation to this forum. I am aware that the omission was swiftly addressed, but you still deserve an unqualified apology for this oversight. And since you are the purveyors of God’s mercy on earth, I’m sure you have forgiven us,” he stated.

He reassured the organisations of his inclusive approach to addressing the country’s education issues and expressed confidence in their understanding and forgiveness.

“We know you are important stakeholders because you own some of the schools. Therefore, this educational forum is essential to ensure we carry everyone together,” he noted.

President Mahama further emphasised the importance of the National Education Forum, noting that it would serve as a platform for addressing the longstanding challenges facing the education sector.

“I am committed to ensuring that all who are concerned about education in Ghana have an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to shaping the policies and programs that will deliver the kind of education we all want. I’m gratified that this has become a reality, and I stand before you today to officially open the National Education Consultative Forum with great pleasure and a deep sense of purpose,” he stated.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) and the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) have expressed disappointment over their exclusion from the National Education Forum, a significant event aimed at addressing challenges in Ghana’s education sector.

Close to 300 stakeholders from the education sector and related fields are participating in the forum, themed, “Transforming Education for a Sustainable Future.”

Govt to introduce National Standardised Test to prepare pupils before BECE

0

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans to introduce what he called a National Standardised Test in basic schools to prepare students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The exams will be conducted for students in class 2, class, 4, class 6, and JSS 2.

Speaking at a public forum on Monday, February 17, Haruna Iddrisu indicated that the National Standardised Test is aimed at psychologically preparing pupils for the BECE and many other national tests.

“I am also happy to announce that a national standardized test will be introduced in Ghana to P2, P4, P6 and JSS2. And the intention is simple. You don’t want to tell the child that the only time he is asked to write exams is to prepare for BECE and get ready for BECE when the child has never gone through even the psychological environment of an examination room.

“Therefore, we intend to introduce the NST, a national standardised test, which will introduce children to prepare for the world of an examination.”

March 31 deadline for asset declaration is too far – Martin Kpebu

0

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has criticised the March 31 deadline set by President John Mahama for government appointees to declare their assets, describing it as too far off.

Mr Kpebu argued that the constitution requires appointees to declare their assets before assuming office, not months after.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Tuesday, February 18, he referred to Article 286(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that public office holders must submit a written declaration of their assets and liabilities to the Auditor-General “before taking office.”

“The March 31 deadline is too long. The Constitution is clear, it should be done before taking office. Initially, we heard two weeks, but now it has been pushed to the end of March 31st. We can do better,” Mr Kpebu said.

He explained that while Act 500, the Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, allows up to six months for asset declaration, that law contradicts the constitution. He emphasised that the constitution is the supreme law, and any law inconsistent with it is void.

Mr Kpebu further noted that civil society activist, Mensah Thompson, has already challenged the six-month provision in court, and the Supreme Court is expected to give a ruling on the matter.

He stressed the importance of immediate asset declaration, warning that delaying the process exposes appointees to corruption.

“When ministers assume office, big contractors quickly come around to introduce themselves, and business deals start almost immediately. Delaying asset declaration gives room for questionable transactions,” he added.

Mr Kpebu called on President Mahama to reconsider the March 31 deadline and ensure that asset declarations align strictly with the constitutional requirement.

“We should appeal to the President to look at this again. The constitution is the supreme law, and we must follow it,” he said.

Mama Esther reveals reasons behind nine-year absence from music scene

Legendary gospel musician, Esther Boakye, known widely as Mama Esther Legendary gospel musician, Esther Boakye, known widely as Mama Esther

Legendary gospel musician, Esther Boakye, known widely as Mama Esther, has provided insight into her absence from the Ghanaian music scene.

The legendary gospel musician has been absent from the music space since releasing four albums nine years ago.

In an interview with Zionfelix, Mama Esther outlined a number of reasons behind her protracted hiatus from the industry.

She mentioned the four albums released on her 50th birthday as the major reason behind the break, as she wanted her fans and gospel music lovers to exhaust all the songs on those albums.

“It’s been nine years since I released a song. Initially, it was a 2-year interval, but it changed to nine years because of something that happened during my 50th birthday. I marked my 50th birthday with the release of four albums.

“The albums included Pentecost Volume 1 & 2, and I did that because I had done the music thing for 15 years without projecting music from my church. People thought I wasn’t proud of my Pentecostal heritage, so I decided to dedicate those albums to music from my church. I also released Best of Mama Esther and Me Lazarus Besore, so there were four albums. I realized the songs were too many to be digested within just two years, so I decided to give it some space and allow people to enjoy the songs.

“Secondly, the current generation seems to love my music. On TikTok and other social media platforms, I see them enjoying some of the old songs I didn’t promote, so I decided to take a break and allow them to enjoy it,” she said.

Mama Esther, who is set to mark her 59th birthday with a single track dubbed “Nyame Nye Mistake,” disclosed that the song is an expression of her gratitude to her teeming fans who have kept her ministry alive for the past nine years.

She explained that the song, which will be released on her 59th birthday which is February 21, 2025, is meant to motivate Christians and gospel music lovers, assuring them of the faithfulness of God.

In “Nyame Nye Mistake,” Mama Esther offers a poignant message of trust and surrender to divine will. The song’s lyrics encourage listeners to find solace in the belief that every life event unfolds according to a higher purpose, even when circumstances are challenging.

The trophy made stops in three African countries The trophy made stops in three African countries

As part of the build-up for the novelty FIFA Club World Cup, the glittering trophy has made a stopover in three African countries namely South Africa, Egypt and Tunisia towards whipping up enthusiasm and interest for the new competition.

The trophy was hosted by the representative clubs of each of the three countries – Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Al Ahly (Egypt) and Esperance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia) – giving their fans and followers of the game in their cities and the country at large, to have a feel of the trophy.

Accompanied by a distinguished FIFA legend, the beautifully designed 10-Kg gold plated shield, was received to a rapturous welcome in the cities of Pretoria, Cairo and Tunis as fans anxiously await the competition that pits together the best 32 clubs in the world.

The first stop was in Pretoria from 7-9 February making stops at the Mamelodi High School, birthplace of Sundowns, where the entire student population erupted into ecstasy upon the sight of the glittering trophy.

The trophy was later felt by staff of the Tshwane Mayor Offices before terminating at the Sammy Marks Square where fans had the opportunity to take photos with the trophy and FIFA legend, Italy FIFA World Cup winner, Alessandro Nesta and Sundowns legends such as former captain Hlompho Kekana, Tiyani Mabunda and legendary goalscorer Daniel Mudau.

“This trophy is a celebration of hope, pride and excellence. Today, we are not celebrating Sundowns going to the FIFA Club World Cup; we are celebrating the FIFA Club World Cup coming to Africa.
