US-led mediators said on Wednesday they were appalled by the continuously deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan and called for urgent action by the warring parties to protect civilians.

The mediators, known as the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) Group, include the United States, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, among others.

“The ALPS group urgently reiterates that international humanitarian law must be fully respected. This includes the obligations to protect civilians, including humanitarian personnel, their premises and assets, as well as to allow and facilitate rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access to all those in need,” the ALPS Group said in a statement.

(VIDEO) Shatta Waleโ€™s arrest is witch -hunt

0

Artiste manager and musician, Bullet has come out in defense of his colleague, Shatta Wale, following the latter’s arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Wednesday, August 20.

According to Bullet, the arrest is nothing but a witch hunt, designed to suppress the creative industry.

“I think it’s more of witch hunting,” Bullet stated. “There’s more to it that people might not even understand. The system has been designed for musicians and celebrities to be poor, so that they can suppress us.”

Bullet believes that the system is unhappy with the success of musicians like Shatta Wale, who have been able to break the mold and achieve financial success.ย

โ€œThey donโ€™t understand that a musician has been able to make so much money. They donโ€™t understand that a musician has been able to buy a house in Trassaco, own Shaxi company, own estates and doing oil business.

โ€œSo the system will hold you back and tell you that you can never make it or shouldnโ€™t make it. Nobody should be happy that Shatta Wale has been arrested,โ€ he stated.

ย The rapper also credited Shatta Wale for changing the game for musicians in Ghana, allowing them to charge higher fees for their performances.ย

โ€œBack in the day, even when we were A list artistes, the highest we received was 3,000 cedis. Shatta Wale came into the industry and changed everything.ย

Now, artistes can charge GHC 200, 000, GHC300,000 for a show. Shatta Wale came into the industry and started taking 100, 000 dollars, 150, 000 dollars for a show so he changed something.

โ€œHe showed the way that musicians too can make money. So the arrest is deeper than you guys could think. Before, musicians couldnโ€™t even afford a stolen BMW but now boys are building mansions, boys are building range rovers, rolls Royce. Boys are making money and owning estates so the system is not happy, they want us to be poor,โ€ he said.

Bullet joined a number of Shatta Waleโ€™s teeming fans who had gathered at the offices of EOCO, demanding the release of their music icon.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has granted dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, bail in the sum of GHยข10 million with two sureties to be justified. (Read Shatta Wale claims he bought Lamborghini from the โ€œstreetโ€ as EOCO grants GHยข10m bail)

In a statement issued today, EOCO said Shatta Wale remains in custody pending the provision of the sureties, whose properties will be verified to ensure they are commensurate with the bail amount.

ย The musician was invited to EOCOโ€™s offices on Wednesday, August 20, to assist in investigations into the purchase of a Lamborghini Urus, which has been linked to proceeds of a US$4 million crime involving Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian currently serving a prison term in the United States.

According to EOCO, after nearly four hours of interrogation, Shatta Wale was unable to identify who sold the luxury vehicle to him, claiming instead that he acquired it from the โ€œstreetโ€.

CSOs’ coalition calls out NPP over posture ahead of Akwatia by-election

0

The Coalition of CSOs Against Political Vigilantism and Violence Extremism has expressed grave concern over the New Patriotic Partyโ€™s (NPP) response following a meeting with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the elections taskforce ahead of the Akwatia by-election.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, August 20, the Coalition described the NPPโ€™s reaction as โ€œparadoxical and dangerous,โ€ warning that it could incite vigilante groups and undermine public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

Paradigm Initiative trains prosecutors on tackling digital and AI-driven crimes

0

Paradigm Initiative has organised a two-day capacity-building workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, to help government prosecutors handle crimes committed through or facilitated by digital technologies.

The focus is on new trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how to align prosecutions with constitutional provisions and international human rights standards.

The training comes at a critical moment. Criminal procedure laws have not fully kept pace with the digital age or the new ways offences are carried out. Increasingly, digital platforms are being used to target victims, violating their privacy and exposing them to harm.

Emerging technologies are making these threats more sophisticated, placing prosecutors under growing pressure to deliver justice.

The workshop, held under the theme โ€œProsecution in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,โ€ is supported by the Kingdom of the Netherlands under the Stemming the Tide of Abuse in Nigeriaโ€™s Digital Space (STANDS) Project.

By examining how AI and digital systems are being integrated into public administration and criminal investigations, the workshop seeks to strike a balance: understanding how these technologies work, recognising the risks they pose, and identifying safeguards to ensure citizensโ€™ fundamental rights remain protected.

Speaking at the opening, Paradigm Initiativeโ€™s Senior Programmes Officer for Anglophone West Africa, Khadijah El-Usman, stressed that failing to build this capacity now could widen the gap between rapid technological change and the legal systemโ€™s ability to respond.

She warned that this could leave prosecutors ill-equipped, increase the risk of rights violations during investigations, and further erode public trust in the justice system.

She said, by investing in targeted training, prosecutors would not only be keeping pace with emerging threats but would also be positioned to advocate for evolving laws in this space.

โ€œBy investing in targeted training, we can ensure prosecutors are not only keeping pace with emerging threats but are also positioned to advocate for evolving laws in the space.โ€

Deputy Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Nigeria, Robert Sonnemans, said Nigeria is making progress in embracing the digital age and its opportunities.

He noted that artificial intelligence brings both benefits and risks. While it can help strengthen investigations and improve access to justice, he said, it also raises serious questions about fairness, bias, and possible misuse.

โ€œArtificial intelligence is a clear example of both promise and risk, holding immense potential to strengthen investigations and improve access to justice, but also pressing questions on how to ensure fairness and prevent bias or misuse.”

Deputy Director at the Department of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Barrister Ali Baba Rijaiu, encouraged participants to take the training seriously. He said the work of prosecutors shapes public trust in the justice system.

If prosecutors can meet the demands of the digital age, he added, they will not only fight crime more effectively but also protect freedom and show that technology can strengthen justice in Nigeria.

โ€œThe work we do shapes the trust of citizens in the justice system. If we rise to the demand of this digital age, we will not only defeat crime, we will also safeguard freedom and show that justice in Nigeria is not left behind by technology but strengthened by it.โ€

IFS questions fiscal transparency amid signs of economic recovery

0

Senior Research Fellow, Leslie Dwight Mensah Senior Research Fellow, Leslie Dwight Mensah

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has raised concerns over the governmentโ€™s handling of public finances, particularly its reporting on the recapitalisation of the state-owned National Investment Bank (NIB), even as Ghanaโ€™s economy shows encouraging signs of recovery.

At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Senior Research Fellow, Leslie Dwight Mensah, highlighted some inconsistencies in the 2025 mid-year budget review.

According to him, while the government disclosed a GHโ‚ต450 million cash injection into NIB, it failed to capture an additional GHโ‚ต1.95 billion in support, which included government bonds and shares of Nestlรฉ Ghana Limited.

โ€œThis omission means the official expenditure and deficit positions for the first half of the year are understated,โ€ Mensah noted.

He warned that such selective reporting undermines commitment-based accounting standards and risks eroding trust in Ghanaโ€™s fiscal data.

Africa’s banking future to be shaped by empowered consumers โ€“ Dr Opoku-Afari

He further cautioned against any return to the international bond market, warning that new borrowing could exacerbate Ghanaโ€™s already high debt burden.

Instead, he urged the government to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation, with particular focus on the extractive sector.

The IFS also called for a fundamental overhaul of Ghanaโ€™s approach to managing natural resources, describing the current concession-based models in mining and oil as inadequate.

Mensah also argued that production-sharing agreements or increased state participation would capture more sustainable value for the nation.

โ€œThe Gold Board initiative is only a superficial solution. What Ghana needs is stronger ownership of production assets themselves,โ€ he said.

He further stressed that greater state involvement in gold, oil and other minerals would boost revenues and stabilise the cedi through stronger foreign exchange inflows.

Despite these fiscal concerns, the IFS acknowledged notable improvements in Ghanaโ€™s macroeconomic indicators.

The economy grew by 5.3% in the first quarter of 2025, driven by strong performances in services (5.9%) and agriculture (6.6%), with fishing recording an impressive 16.4% growth.

Headline inflation fell sharply from 23.8% in December 2024 to 13.7% by June 2025, while the ICT and financial services sub-sectors recorded growth rates of 13.1% and 9.3% respectively.

โ€œThese are encouraging signs but sustaining them will require fiscal discipline, transparency and structural reforms to strengthen long-term economic resilience,โ€ he added.

The institute urged the government to adopt full transparency in reporting, avoid fiscal practices that could distort public data and resist policies that compromise debt sustainability.

The empowered consumer: shaping the future of digital banking in Africa

0

Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari

ย ย

As of 2023, 48% of Africaโ€™s population were active users of banking servicesโ€”a figure that continues to grow at a fast rate. However, this shift is not only about expansion; Africa is emerging as a global trendsetter in digital banking, leading the way with innovative, consumer-centric solutions tailored for its mobile-first population. With mobile money adoption growingโ€”33% of adults in the sub-Saharan Africa region owned a mobile money account as of 2021, and registered mobile money accounts across the continent reached 856 million by 2023. It is clear that a user of remote payment or banking services is now a potential digital banking customer.

Digitalization has shifted power from traditional banks to consumers, shaping financial services to meet the needs of these consumers. The empowered consumer now demands seamless access to banking services anytime, anywhere and across multiple digital channels. They further require a variety of financial products tailored to their needs.

Todayโ€™s consumer is more financially aware, understanding product implications, usage, and the recourse mechanisms available to them. They are actively comparing alternatives to make the best financial decisions based on their needs and circumstances.

Recognising this shift, governments and regulators across Africa are working on policies that drive digitalization, not only to enhance transparency and improve monetary policy transmission but also because of the economic benefits and consumer empowerment that come with it. As digital banking continues to evolve, the question is no longer whether consumers will embrace it, but rather how financial service providers will adapt to meet growing consumer demand.

ย ย ย  II.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  The Rise of the Empowered Consumer in Africa

As consumers become more knowledgeable about financial products and services, they demand more transparency, affordability and convenience, compelling financial institutions to innovate.

One of the most significant enablers of this shift is mobile penetration, which has revolutionized financial access across the continent. With millions of Africans using mobile phones as their primary banking tool, digital wallets and USSD-based transactions have become the norm, allowing even those in remote areas to benefit from financial services. The rise of FinTechs has also introduced faster, more cost-effective alternatives to traditional banking. Fintech startups have disrupted the industry by offering digital solutions tailored to consumer needs. An example is OPay, a Nigerian FinTech company that offers its customers a platform for payments, transfers, savings, loans and POS services[5].

At the same time, regulatory frameworks are evolving to support consumer empowerment, with policymakers implementing measures to promote open banking, data protection, and financial transparency. These initiatives are designed not only to safeguard consumers but also to foster innovation.

ย III.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  The Adaptation of Digital Banking to Meet Consumer Demands

The shift from traditional branch-based (brick and mortar) banking to digital banking has placed the consumer at the centre of financial service delivery, ensuring that banking is no longer confined to physical locations or limited to standard working hours.

A key driver of this transformation is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which operates behind the scenes to simplify user interactions while managing complex financial processes. AI-driven credit assessment tools now allow consumers, especially those without formal credit histories to access loans based on alternative data, such as mobile phone usage, transaction patterns, and behavioral insights. This alternative data is allowing Banks and Fintechs to established trusted credentials to assess and price risks of this new type of consumers. This has significantly expanded financial inclusion, providing access to credit for those who were previously excluded.

Customer service is further enhanced through the use of chatbots and self-service tools, enabling users to resolve issues, inquire about transactions, and access banking services without human intervention. Digital banks like TymeBank โ€“ a fully digital South African bank has embraced AI-powered solutions to provide round-the-clock assistance, low-cost transactional accounts and high-yield savings accounts mainly for low-income rural customers.

Finally, partnerships between fintech companies; who have typically shown themselves to be more agile in churning out customer-centric innovation solutions, and traditional banks; who have typically been more meticulous and deliberate, has often yielded the right balance of optimal user experience anchored on a strong compliance regime. This careful balance ensures that customers are both delighted and protected, and the right balance between financial inclusion and financial stability is calibrated.

ย IV.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Trust, Security and Consumer Protection

As digital banking continues to expand, the balance between convenience and security remains a concern. While consumers enjoy seamless access to financial services, they also face growing risks related to cybersecurity, fraud, and data privacy. To address these challenges, central banks across Africa are implementing policies that promote open and digital banking while ensuring robust consumer protection measures. Ghana, for example, has emerged as a global leader in mobile money regulation, recently claiming the top spot in the GSMA Mobile Money Regulatory Index for its strong policies that foster innovation while safeguarding consumers. The countryโ€™s supervision framework includes a guideline on consumer recourse mechanism, a directive to mobile money providers on unclaimed balances and dormant accounts, a data protection law among others. In 2023, the Central Bank of Nigeria issued operational guidelines on Open Banking while Bank of Ghana also published a Draft Open Banking Directive in 2024 for Regulated Institutions to facilitate the sharing of customer-consented financial data amongst Regulated Financial Institutions (RFIs).

In addition to regulation, financial literacy initiatives play a crucial role in consumer protection, equipping users with the knowledge to make informed decisions, recognize fraud, and fully understand their rights.

Remarkably, these principles hold true even for future digital banking instruments as Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Studies such as Bank of Ghanaโ€™s eCedi pilot continue to reveal that one of the most important features of a CBDC for consumers, besides transaction fees and safety standards, was that it was backed by the central bank[9], reinforcing trust in its stability, reliability, and legitimacy as a secure digital currency.

ย ย ย  V.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  What Will It Take To Empower Consumers Across Africa?

Empowering consumers in Africaโ€™s digital banking landscape requires more than just technological advancement. There must be a prioritization of interoperability, collaboration and continuous innovation.

One critical factor is cross-functional cooperation and interoperability across markets. Consumers should have full control over their financial choices, supported by clear and standardized disclosures, proper consent mechanisms, and seamless access to financial services across different platforms and regions. There must be a concerted effort to standardize digital banking regulations and frameworks across Africa, enabling a more integrated financial ecosystem where consumers can transact effortlessly, regardless of borders.

Emerging innovations, such as CBDCs, AI-driven financial services, and cross-border banking solutions, hold immense potential in shaping the future of consumer empowerment. CBDCs could provide greater financial stability, reduce cross-border transaction costs, and improve monetary policy transmission, while AI-powered banking solutions continue to enhance personalization, automate customer support and expand credit access.

Continuous education is another critical factor. Regulators, financial institutions, and FinTechs must work together to ensure that consumers fully understand their rights, financial options, and available protections. Trust remains a cornerstone of financial engagement, and efforts must be made to safeguard data privacy, prevent fraud, and uphold ethical banking practices.

Finally, a dynamic and vibrant fintech ecosystem must be encouraged through policy enablers such as regulatory sandboxes, innovation funds and risk-based licensing regimes, as well as private sector investment to achieve scale.

Ultimately, the success of digital banking in Africa hinges on how well the empowered consumer is understood and served. The modern African banking customer is informed, connected, and expects financial services that are accessible, transparent, and tailored to their needs. By embracing collaboration, education, innovation, and trust-building, the digital banking ecosystem can evolve in a way that truly puts the consumer in control, driving financial inclusion and economic growth across the continent.

High cocoa prices: Ghana, others to see only limited economic gains

0

Africaโ€™s cocoa producers, including Ghana, will see only limited economic gains from structurally higher global cocoa prices.

According to Fitch Solutions, the feedthrough of higher international prices to local farmers will also remain limited.

โ€œWhile international cocoa prices will remain structurally higher in the years to come, we think that African producers will not capture the full benefits”.ย

Prices averaged US$8,900/tonne in the first seven months of 2025, more than triple the 2005-2023 average of US$2,500/tonne, caused largely by climate-related supply disruptions in West Africa that led to three consecutive years of global cocoa deficits. Althoughย our Agribusiness team projects prices to ease to an average of US$6,900/tonne over 2026-2030, they will remain well above the long-term average as global stocks recover only graduallyโ€, Fitch Solutions mentioned. ย

It added that structurally higher cocoa prices are unlikely to deliver a major windfall for African producers.

โ€œOur view that structurally higher cocoa prices will not create major economic windfalls for Africa’s cocoa-producing nations in the coming years rests on three key factors that we outline belowโ€, the UK-based firm pointed out.

First, it said the feedthrough of higher international prices to local farmers will remain limited.ย

The worldโ€™s two largest cocoa producers – Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire and Ghana – set farmgate prices through government-run marketing boards. While both countries have raised farmgate prices in recent seasons and are likely to maintain them at elevated levels, the gap between farmgate and international prices remains wide.

โ€œThis reflects the fiscal and operational constraints of national marketing boards, which limit the extent to which governments can pass on global price gains to farmers. As a result, although cocoa farmers in Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire and Ghana will see improved incomes, they are unlikely to capture the full upside of high market prices, limiting the broader impact on household consumption and domestic demandโ€, it alluded.

It continued that farmgate prices will remain far below market prices, limiting upside to farmer incomes.

Price Gap to Fuel Smuggling

Second, it said the persistent price gap will fuel smuggling from Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire and Ghana to neighbouring markets and limit the positive impact of high prices on their external accounts.ย

โ€œAs Ivorian and Ghanaian farmers will be able to access higher prices in neighbouring countries that do not have government-set prices โ€“ such as Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Togo โ€“ we anticipate that smuggling activity will intensify. These neighbouring countries already show substantial export increases that cannot be explained by price movements alone, indicating that cocoa from Cรดte d’Ivoire and Ghana is being diverted across borders.

While this will bolster the export earnings of neighbouring economies, it stressed that this will deprive Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire and Ghana of a key source of foreign exchange.

It added that whereas short-term risks associated with this are limited (due to elevated gold prices), and sustained cocoa smuggling will weaken the ability of Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire and Ghana to absorb future external shocks. ย ย

Sam George orders suspension of enforcement against unlicensed delivery riders โ€“ Citinewsroom โ€“ Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, has ordered an immediate suspension of the enforcement exercise by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) and the Ghana Police against unlicensed delivery riders.

Announcing the directive in a post on X on Thursday, August 21, the Minister admitted that the exercise was consistent with existing laws regulating the use of motorbikes for courier services. However, he stressed that wider stakeholder consultations and public education must precede its implementation.

โ€œI have directed this afternoon [August 21] an immediate halt to the ongoing enforcement action by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission.

โ€œWe must enforce the law with a humane face to it,โ€ he stated, adding that he would meet stakeholders in the coming days to agree on a roadmap for enforcement.

The decision came hours after a viral video captured chaotic scenes near the National Theatre in Accra, where aggrieved delivery riders clashed with PCSRC officials following the seizure of dozens of unlicensed motorcycles.

GRA surprised by NIAโ€™s public attack, calls for dialogue

0

Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says the Authority was taken aback by the National Identification Authorityโ€™s (NIA) decision to take their long-standing disagreements into the public domain instead of resolving them through dialogue.

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, speaking on JoyNewsโ€™ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, August 21, described the public statements made by the NIA as surprising and counterproductive.

He insisted that the leadership of the two agencies had already met and agreed to discuss the matter further.

โ€œSo the issue that has recently risen in the media that, let me say, allegedly, National Identification Authority indicating that GRA owes them millions of cedis, and for which reason they are denying GRA of the use of the card.

“Letโ€™s step back and recall that in the previous administration, government indicated that the use of the Ghana Card should become the tax identification for individuals. You and I do know that the National Identification Authority is funded by government, and this project has been funded by government.

“What the data has been created is for institutions like GRA and others to be able to use that platform to further other governmentโ€™s work, and thatโ€™s what we are doing, as far as the individual taxpayers are concerned.โ€

He noted that before he assumed office, there was an arrangement between the two institutions over data use and payments, but it was not a finalised agreement.

โ€œLet me acknowledge that before I took over this reign, or before 2025 there was some form of legacy arrangement between the NIA and GRA. Part of it was for NIA to say that as GRA receives the data, some amount has to be paid to NIA.

“But the other part was also that GRA made available all its offices nationwide for NIA to operate. So as we speak today, NIA has offices in GRA offices for which GRA does not pay, for which NIA does not pay anything to GRA. But these arrangements were not conclusive.โ€

Sarpong explained that upon taking office, he met with the NIAโ€™s Director-General to chart a way forward.

โ€œSo as far as the demand for debt is concerned, when I took over, I have from leadership perspective, engaged the Director General of NIA. We met here in GRA offices, and we discussed the matter, and we agreed that as leaders, we need to look at the issues and resolve them subsequently.

“Iโ€™ve also had a conversation with them on how GRA believes the matter should be, and how they should. So for us as GRA it came as a matter of surprise, that something we are speaking on as legacy, as leaders we came to meet, we have opened the door and accepted them to discuss further and resolve, so it was a huge surprise to hear our sister agency trying to take the matter to the media and solve it there.โ€

He warned that disputes between state institutions must not be handled in ways that disrupt service to the public.

โ€œItโ€™s important to recognize that when you have problems, you cannot solve it all in the media. Itโ€™s a matter that we need to sit, to dialog, to discuss in a spirit of collaborative manner and solve it. So you will notice that from GRA perspective, we have extended another professional arm to our sister agency to say, look, letโ€™s sit down.

“We know there are issues in this area. We donโ€™t fully agree with your assertions and claims, but we are prepared to lead a way to discuss and to resolve the matter. So weโ€™ve extended a hand to them to lead and resolve.

“I believe that that is what leadership is for, and the two of us are government institutions to serve the people. Our actions should not lead to destabilizing service to the people or disturbing our core mandate.โ€

Addressing reports that the standoff was affecting importers, Sarpong described the claims as false.

โ€œWhat also came out was the negative or the incorrect news to say that because NIA has taken that action, people cannot clear their stations. As you speak right now, it is not an accurate account.

“So if you look at the tax administration system today, we have the individuals, which we are using the Ghana Card, and businesses which GRA generates by itself. Most of these importers run on business TIN. We donโ€™t rely on Ghana Card.

“And, therefore, it couldnโ€™t have been that if you donโ€™t have your Ghana Card at use, you cannot import. So I want to use this medium to assure all importers that one, that is not the situation. We have not had any single complaint from any importer. The general public should be assured that that is not the situation.โ€

He further clarified that existing taxpayers are not affected by the matter.

โ€œIndeed, once your Ghana Card is once validated in your system, itโ€™s not something we validate all the time. So if you are already in our system, you are not impacted.

“It is only needed when a new taxpayer offices and they show their Ghana Card, then we go to NIA and say, somebody has showed their Ghana Card. Is it issued by you? And therefore, for existing taxpayers, both corporate and individuals, this matter is not having any impact at all. And therefore thatโ€™s why, as we say, that it was inaccurate.โ€

Bawumia leads NPP presidential race with 52%, Ken Agyapong trails with 17% โ€“ Poll

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been tipped as the frontrunner in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to a new poll released by Global Info Analytics on August 21, 2025.

The poll shows Dr. Bawumia commanding 52% support among NPP delegates ahead of the partyโ€™s upcoming presidential primaries.

His closest contender, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, trails significantly with 17%.

Other candidates in the race received lower levels of support. Dr. Bryan Acheampong polled 3%, followed by former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1%. Former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo each received less than 1%.

Meanwhile, 10% of delegates remain undecided, while 9% declined to disclose their preference.

The poll surveyed 2,656 NPP delegates, with 2,560 completing all responses. Interviews were conducted from August 12 to 20, 2025, across 263 of the 276 constituencies using computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI). The survey has a confidence level of 99% and a margin of error of ยฑ2.44%.

The data suggests Dr. Bawumia holds a strong lead but still faces the challenge of converting undecided delegates as the primary draws closer.

A Pirates fan held this placard during a match A Pirates fan held this placard during a match

Football rivalry has a way of producing cheeky moments, and one of them came in South Africa this week.

During Orlando Piratesโ€™ midweek clash with Stellenbosch in the South African Premier League on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a supporter of the Buccaneers caught attention with a witty placard that read: โ€œIโ€™m going to Asante Kotoko you today.โ€

The sign was an obvious jab at Kaizer Chiefs, who had suffered a painful 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup final back in July 2025.

Pirates fans have wasted no time rubbing salt into their rivalsโ€™ wounds, and this display was a fresh reminder of that humiliation.

Pogba, Adebayor, Balotelli: Footballers who faced family feuds

Pirates backed up the banter on the pitch, too. Sebelebe Kamogelo scored the only goal of the game, sealing a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch. The result was significant, marking the Buccaneersโ€™ first win of the new Premiership campaign after a slow start to the season.

Ironically, while Pirates celebrated in South Africa, Kotoko themselves were enduring a setback of their own.

The Porcupine Warriors fell 2-1 to Bibiani Gold Stars in their opening fixture of the 2025 GHALCA Top Four at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Kotoko had taken an early lead through Albert Amoah, but a penalty from Samuel Atta Kumi and a Henry Ansu own goal turned the game on its head.

Mansoโ€™s men secured a 2-1 win over FA Cup champions Asante Kotoko at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Wednesday night. Despite fans not being present, the coach said he felt their spirit with the team.

Kotoko took the lead through Albert Amoah, but Gold Stars equalized before halftime when Samuel Attah Kumi calmly converted a penalty. After the break, a misjudged back pass from Henry Ansu ended in an own goal, gifting Gold Stars the opener they needed.

Manso credited the clubโ€™s followers for their unseen support.

“What we tell them every day is where we are now it is not only the team that got here they are all part of the journey here,” he told Bibiani Gold Stars Communications.

“Although we know there were not here but we know they followed the team with their hearts backed with prayers so we are excited and appreciate all what they do for us,”

Africa’s banking future to be shaped by empowered consumers โ€“ Dr Opoku-Afari

0

Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, former First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, former First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The former First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, has said Africaโ€™s banking future will be driven not by institutions, but by increasingly empowered consumers who demand convenience, transparency, and security.

โ€œWith digitalisation, power has shifted from traditional banks to consumers,โ€ he argued in a thought leadership article titled, The Empowered Consumer: Shaping the Future of Digital Banking in Africa.

โ€œTodayโ€™s consumer demands seamless access to banking services anytime, anywhere, and across multiple digital channels,โ€ Dr Opoku-Afari explained.

BoG leverages academia to shape digital currency future

He noted that Africa is emerging as a global trendsetter in digital banking, citing the continentโ€™s 856 million registered mobile money accounts in 2023 and the growing adoption of FinTech-driven services.

Companies such as Nigeriaโ€™s OPay and South Africaโ€™s TymeBank, he said, demonstrate how innovation tailored to consumer needs can expand financial access at scale.

โ€œAI-driven credit assessment tools now allow consumers, especially those without formal credit histories, to access loans based on alternative data. This has significantly expanded financial inclusion,โ€ the former first deputy governor of BoG said.

However, Dr Opoku-Afari cautioned that the rapid rise of digital banking also raises concerns around cybersecurity, fraud, and data privacy.

He pointed to Ghanaโ€™s recognition as the global leader in the GSMA Mobile Money Regulatory Index as evidence that strong consumer protection frameworks must underpin innovation.

Dr Opoku-Afari further stressed that the future of African banking requires interoperability, regulatory collaboration, and continuous consumer education.

โ€œUltimately, the success of digital banking in Africa hinges on how well the empowered consumer is understood and served,โ€ he said.

โ€œThe modern African banking customer is informed, connected, and expects financial services that are accessible, transparent, and tailored to their needs,โ€ he concluded.

Balotelli is a former striker of Italy Balotelli is a former striker of Italy

Mario Balotelliโ€™s life has always been a mix of triumph, turbulence, and unflinching honesty. Long before his explosive goals and headline-grabbing antics, the Italy-born striker carried scars from a childhood that few knew about.

Born in Palermo in 1990 to Ghanaian immigrants, Balotelli suffered from a chronic intestinal condition as a baby. His parents, unable to cope financially or emotionally, gave him up at the age of two.

He was placed under the care of the Balotelli family in Brescia, who would raise him with love and stability, becoming the only family he truly recognised.

But in 2010, at just 19, the young striker was confronted with the return of his biological parents, who had granted interviews to local newspapers discussing their โ€œlost son.โ€

‘I’m gonna Asante Kotoko you today’ – Orlando Pirates fan trolls Kaizer Chiefs

Balotelli spoke out in a heartfelt statement on his official website:

โ€œI had already asked my birth parents to respect my privacy, just as my family always has done, but they didnโ€™t listen to me.โ€

He expressed frustration over their sudden interest in his life, suggesting it was tied to his rising fame.

โ€œI have no other recourse than to repeat what I said two years ago: if I hadnโ€™t become the football star Mario Balotelli, they wouldnโ€™t have cared what happened to me.โ€

Balotelli also addressed the way their comments cast his adoptive family in a bad light:

โ€œWhile I was on tour with Inter in America, a local newspaper published an interview with my birth parents. They said some incorrect and vague things, which put my adoptive family in a bad light.

This is something I cannot let pass.โ€

These words, spoken when Balotelli was still just 19, revealed the emotional depth behind his often fiery public persona.

Despite these early struggles, he went on to a decorated career, winning the Premier League with Manchester City, dazzling for Italy at Euro 2012, and later representing AC Milan, Liverpool, and Nice.

Zoomlion leads national programme to eliminate malaria at sourceย

0

Accra, Aug. 21, GNA โ€“ As part of efforts to fight malaria, the waste management giant,ย Zoomlion Ghana Limited, will lead a nationwide programme, which seeks to destroy theย breeding grounds of mosquitoes.ย

The Larval Source Management (LSM) programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Health andย the Ghana Health Service.ย

A release copied to Ghana News Agency on Thursday described the move as โ€œa strategic shiftย from controlling malaria towards its complete elimination.โ€ย

โ€œThe programme, a core component of the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP),ย moves beyond treating symptoms and eliminating biting adult mosquitoes to systematicallyย destroying larvae before they can hatch and spread the disease,โ€ it said.ย

The multi-level programme, officials say, would include land reclamation to โ€œpermanently alterย breeding sites, routine clearing of streams, and the targeted application of environmentallyย sensitive biological and chemical agents.โ€ย

โ€œWe are not just controlling the mosquito population; we are working to break the chain ofย transmission entirely. By stopping the mosquito before it becomes a flying, biting adult, weย prevent malaria, dengue, and other vector-borne diseases from ever reaching ourย communities.โ€ ย

The programmeโ€™s implementation would leverage the expertise of the Noguchi Memorialย Institute, the School of Public Health, and regional health authorities.ย

โ€œA key to its success is the mobilisation of community volunteers, empowering locals to identifyย and help clear standing water in their immediate surroundings,โ€ the release said.ย

โ€œIt is a cost-effective method that reduces the need for large-scale insecticide spraying,ย minimises environmental impact, and protects the efficacy of other malaria control toolsโ€ฆโ€ ย

โ€œMost importantly, it directly translates to improved public health through fewer infections andย fatalities.โ€ ย

Zoomlion urged citizens to support the programme by reporting stagnant water sites, coveringย water containers, and clearing clogged gutters to deny mosquitoes a breeding place.ย

โ€œEliminating mosquito breeding sites is synonymous with eliminating malaria. This is a long-term fight, and with nationwide participation, victory is within our grasp,โ€ it added.ย

Trump administration says itโ€™s reviewing all 55 million US visa holders

0

The United States Department of State has said that itโ€™s reviewing the records of more than 55 million foreigners who hold valid US visas for potential revocation or deportable violations of immigration rules.

In a written answer to a question posed by The Associated Press, the department said on Thursday that all US visa holders are subject to โ€œcontinuous vettingโ€ with an eye towards any indication that they could be ineligible for the document.

Should such information be found, the visa will be revoked and, if the visa holder is in the US, he or she would be subject to deportation.

The department said it was looking for indicators of ineligibility including visa overstays, criminal activity, threats to public safety, engaging in any form of โ€œterrorist activityโ€, or providing support to a โ€œterrorist organizationโ€.

โ€œWe review all available information as part of our vetting, including law enforcement or immigration records or any other information that comes to light after visa issuance indicating a potential ineligibility,โ€ the department said.

Since taking office in January, US President Donald Trump has directed a large-scale crackdown on migration, going after those with legal status as well as undocumented migrants.

While the government initially said it would focus only on dangerous criminals, thousands of people are being arrested daily, with the New York Times estimating this week that the government is on track to deport 400,000 people in 2025.

Authorities have gone after working immigrants through unprecedented raids of restaurants, construction sites, and farms โ€“ as well as in courthouses where immigration agents arrest those attending civil appointments needed to help legalise their status.

The government has also sought to roll back humanitarian parole and Temporary Protected Status, which has given hundreds of thousands of people from a range of countries facing adverse conditions the right to live and work in the US.

Student visa holders have similarly been targeted, with the State Department saying earlier this week that 6,000 students have seen their visas revoked this year. While the department maintains that those students have either โ€œbroken the law or expressed support for terrorismโ€, many documented cases have involved students who took part in pro-Palestinian protests or even simply wrote an opinion piece โ€“ all of which are protected free speech. Others who have seen their visas revoked, however, had not engaged in any sort of activism.

Piesie Esther is a Ghanaian Gospel singer Piesie Esther is a Ghanaian Gospel singer

Gospel singer Piesie Esther has urged her fellow musicians, especially women in the gospel fraternity, not to give in to the pressure of appearing dull or plain just to be considered โ€œgodlyโ€.

According to her, too many Gospel artistes hide their real personalities and lose confidence because they are afraid of being judged by the public.

She believes it is time for that to change, insisting that โ€œGod loves glamourโ€ and that presenting oneself well does not take away from the Gospel message.

LilWin issues apology to colleagues over recent outbursts

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, the gospel singer explained that looking good does not mean compromising the word of God but rather presenting it in a more appealing way.

โ€œWe donโ€™t have to be plain to be holy. The God we represent appreciates good things, so we should always present ourselves looking our best,โ€ she said.

She added that when the message is powerful, people will not be distracted by how an artiste looks.

Every artiste needs a record label – Kyei Nwom

Instead, she believes appearance can strengthen the message and help win more souls.

โ€œTruthfully, when you are conveying a good message, people wonโ€™t even be distracted by your looks,โ€ she said.

Piesie Esther also mentioned that times have changed and with platforms like social media now projecting artistes beyond their home countries, gospel musicians cannot afford to look outdated.

โ€œTimes have changed. There is social media and all other platforms that project you beyond your country and so we should be careful not to look โ€˜coloโ€™ just because we want to be seen as godly. I perfectly understand that we arenโ€™t in competition with secular artistes but they are very particular with branding and I think we can equally look in that direction,โ€ she noted.

Her comments come at a time when there are concerns about the direction of Gospel music, with some critics accusing gospel musicians of focusing more on fame and material gains instead of ministry.

Piesie Esther clarified that her message about branding goes beyond just appearance.

She explained that it is about putting structures in place to build a long-lasting career in music.

She used her own career as an example of this growth. โ€œThe Piesie Esther during Ziba Beko days is not the same Piesie Esther in the Waye Me Yie time, and

everyone can tell. Thereโ€™s been a lot of growth and the results are showing,โ€ she said.

The singer noted that todayโ€™s music industry requires more than just releasing songs.

Musicians, she said, must find ways to engage with their fans on social media, build stronger relationships with their audience, and also position themselves well enough to attract corporate sponsorship.

โ€œPresently, itโ€™s not just about releasing songs. How are you engaging your listeners on social media and strengthening the artiste-fan bond? What are you doing to attract corporate Ghana to sponsor your event or sign you on as a brand ambassador?โ€ she asked.

Shatta Waleโ€™s Lamborghini linked to FBI, US justice probe โ€“ EOCO

0

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says the Lamborghini Urus found in the possession of dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, is linked to a $4 million crime being investigated by the FBI and the US Justice Department.

EOCO stated that the vehicle was identified by US authorities as part of proceeds from a fraud case involving a Ghanaian, Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States.

According to the statement, EOCO revealed that a US court has already ordered the forfeiture of the car to the US government as restitution.

The Office said Shatta Wale was invited to appear before investigators on August 20, 2025, after publicly claiming that he bought the vehicle for $150,000.

He was interrogated and later granted bail of GHโ‚ต10 million with two sureties.

In the statement, EOCO noted that Shatta Wale was unable to provide receipts or documents to prove ownership of the Lamborghini.

They added that he claimed to have purchased it โ€œfrom the streetโ€ through someone possibly called โ€œZak,โ€ whose identity he could not confirm.

EOCO explained that the only document connected to the vehicle was a customs declaration that carried the name of Nana Kwabena Amuah, the jailed Ghanaian at the centre of the US fraud case.

Business News

The African Policy Lens (APL), a policy think tank, has issued a call for the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to immediately withdraw its recent directive suspending foreign currency cash payments to large corporations.ย

The group has condemned the measure as economically harmful and dangerously out of touch with business realities.

The central bankโ€™s order, issued on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, instructs all banks to immediately halt foreign currency cash disbursements to large firms unless the transactions are backed by prior foreign cash deposits from the same institutions.

In a sstatement, the APL described the directive as “draconian” and “regressive,” warning that it “risks inflicting serious harm on the Ghanaian economy.” The group asserted that the move suggests the BoG is “more concerned with temporarily propping up the exchange rate rather than pursuing prudent and sustainable economic measures.”

The think tank raised questions about the practicality of the order for key sectors, specifically highlighting Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) and mining firms. “Instructing banks to discontinue the disbursement of foreign currency to critical entities… unless they lodge equivalent foreign cash deposits with their banks, reflects a lack of foresight and disregard for the operational realities of businesses and the welfare of the Ghanaian people,” the APL stated.

It further challenged the BoGโ€™s logic, asking: “do all these firms sell their products and services in foreign currency? If not, how does the BoG expect companies like the BDCs to make foreign deposits before requesting forex to import petroleum products from the international markets? Where exactly does the BoG expect these corporations to obtain such forex for deposits in the first place?”

The APL concluded that the directive “clearly demonstrates that the BoG has lost touch with its mandate,” and posed a further damning question: “Is the central bank, by implication, pushing BDCs and mining companies toward transacting in the black market? If so, what becomes of the sustainability of the local currency, which this very directive claims to protect?”

Finally, the group pointed to a perceived contradiction in the BoGโ€™s stance, noting that “ifโ€”as the Governor insistsโ€”the exchange rate is determined solely by market forces and not excessive intervention by the BoG, then the central bank has no legitimate reason to be anxious.”

The statement was signed by Dr. George Domfeh, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana and Head of Research at APL.

The CVF is a global coalition of countries most affected by climate change, working to address its severe social, economic, and environmental impacts.

Speaking at a media engagement in Accra on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Nasheed introduced the CVF and its finance arm, the Vulnerable Twenty (V20), while highlighting Ghanaโ€™s role as a former chair and host of the forum.

โ€œThe Climate Vulnerable Forum is a group of 74 countries, including Ghana, that are highly vulnerable to a warming planet,โ€ Mohamed Nasheed said.

Nasheed commended Ghana for โ€œdemonstrating strong political leadership during its recent tenure as Chair of the CVF/V20 and offering to host us here in Accra, literally in the center of the Earth.โ€

He outlined three priority areas of the CVF/V20: Climate Prosperity Plans (CPPs) which include, advocacy for debt solutions, and systemic reforms to the global financial system.

Touching on Climate Prosperity Plans, he explained that they are โ€œmulti-phased, country-led investment and financing strategies to help our members transition from climate vulnerability to climate resilience.โ€

CPPs focus on green infrastructure, energy transition and climate-smart agriculture. Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have already begun implementation.

How Ghana can shape Africa’s green energy agenda

Addressing debt concerns, Nasheed stressed that many CVF members are โ€œup to their eyeballs in debtโ€ while also grappling with climate disasters that destroy critical infrastructure.

โ€œCountries borrow money to build roads or hospitals, but extreme weather destroys them, yet the debt still remains. This is so unfair,โ€ he explained.

He therefore called for practical debt solutions, including extending repayment terms to 40 years, lowering interest rates, and automatic standstills on debt repayments during crises.

On systemic reform, Nasheed said the CVF and V20 are mobilising heads of state, finance ministers, central banks and parliaments to press for a global financial system that โ€œbetter supports and stops penalising our countries.โ€

โ€œUltimately, the success of climate action depends on bold and equitable solutions for the worldโ€™s most climate-vulnerable countries,โ€ he concluded.

Donโ€™t settle this in the media โ€“ GRA boss to NIA over debt row

0

Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has expressed surprise at the decision of the National Identification Authority (NIA) to air grievances over alleged debts through the media.

According to Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, the differences should instead be resolved internally.

Speaking on Joy Newsโ€™ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, August 21, he said the GRA has already opened discussions with the NIA to address concerns over claims that the Authority owes millions of cedis.

โ€œSo the issue that has recently risen in the media, that, let me say, allegedly, National Identification Authority indicating that GRA owes them millions of cedis, and for which reason they are denying GRA of the use of the card.

“Letโ€™s step back and weโ€™ll recall that in the previous administration, government indicated that the use of the Ghana Card should become the tax identification for individuals.

Mr. Sarpong explained that while some legacy arrangements between the two agencies existed, they were not conclusive and had been the subject of ongoing discussions.

โ€œLet me acknowledge that before I took over this reign, or before 2025, there was some form of legacy arrangement between the NIA and GRA. Part of it was for NIA to say that as GRA receives the data, some amount has to be paid to NIA.

“But the other part was also that GRA made available all its offices nationwide for NIA to operate. So as we speak today, NIA has offices all in GRA offices for which GRA does not pay, for which NIA does not pay anything to GRA. But these arrangements were not conclusive.

“So as far as the demand for debt is concerned, when I took over, I have from leadership perspective engaged the Director General of NIA. We met here in GRA offices, and we discussed the matter, and we agreed that as leaders, we need to look at the issues and resolve them subsequently. Iโ€™ve also had a conversation with them, how what GRA believes the matter should be, and how they should.โ€

He stressed that the GRA was taken aback by NIAโ€™s decision to take the matter public.

โ€œFor us as GRA it came as a matter of surprise. Thatโ€™s something that we are speaking on is legacy. As leaders, we came to meet, we have opened the door and accepted them to discuss further and resolve.

“So it was a huge surprise to hear our sister agency trying to take the matter to the media and solve it there. Itโ€™s important to recognize that when you have problems, you cannot solve it all in the media. Itโ€™s a matter that we need to sit, to dialog, to discuss in a spirit of collaborative manner and solve it.โ€

Mr. Sarpong maintained that the GRA had extended a professional hand of cooperation to the NIA and urged them to reciprocate.

โ€œSo you will notice that from GRA perspective, we have extended another professional arm to our sister agency to say, look, letโ€™s sit down. We know there are issues in this area. We donโ€™t fully agree with your assertions and claims, but we are prepared to lead a way to discuss and to resolve the matter. So weโ€™ve extended a hand to them to lead and resolve.

“I believe that that is what leadership is for, and the two of us are government institutions to serve the people. Our actions should not lead to destabilising service to the people or disturbing our core mandate. So we are committed to work with NIA, and we call upon them to take on the hand that we have extended and let us resolve the matter and deal with it.โ€

He also rejected reports that the alleged standoff was disrupting trade at the ports.

โ€œWhat also came out was the negative or the incorrect news to say that because NIA has taken that action, people cannot clear their stations. You speak right now, it is not an accurate account. So if you look at tax administration system today, we have the individuals which we are using the Ghana card, and businesses which GRA generates by itself. Most of these importers run on business TIN.

“We donโ€™t rely on Ghana Card. And therefore it couldnโ€™t have been that if you donโ€™t have your Ghana Card at use, you cannot import. So I want to use this medium to assure all importers that one, that is not the situation. We have not had any single complaint from any importer. The general public should be assured that that is not the situation. And then we are also working with NIA to resolve the matter.โ€

He clarified that the Ghana Card validation process only applies to new taxpayers, not existing ones.

“And, therefore, for existing taxpayers, both corporate and individuals, this matter is not having any impact at all. And therefore thatโ€™s why, as we say, that it was inaccurate, the post that was.โ€

Clearing goods at the ports not affected by Ghana Card dispute โ€“ GRA Boss

0

The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has dismissed claims that ongoing disagreements between the Authority and the National Identification Authority (NIA) over alleged debts have disrupted the clearance of goods at the ports.

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, speaking on Joy Newsโ€™ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, August 21, said reports suggesting that importers cannot clear their goods because of the Ghana Card dispute are โ€œnot an accurate account.โ€

โ€œWhat also came out was the negative or the incorrect news to say that because NIA has taken that action, people cannot clear their stations.

“As you speak right now, it is not an accurate account. If you look at the tax administration system today, we have the individuals, which we are using the Ghana Card, and businesses which GRA generates by itself. Most of these importers run on business TIN.

“We donโ€™t rely on Ghana Card. And therefore it couldnโ€™t have been that if you donโ€™t have your Ghana Card at use, you cannot import.โ€

Mr. Sarpong assured importers that port operations remain unaffected.

โ€œSo I want to use this medium to assure all importers that one, that is not the situation. We have not had any single complaint from any importer.

“The general public should be assured that that is not the situation. And then we are also working with NIA to resolve the matter.โ€

He explained that the Ghana Card is not continuously validated for existing taxpayers and therefore cannot disrupt the clearing process.

โ€œIndeed, once your Ghana Card is once validated and in your system, itโ€™s not something we validate all the time. So if you are already in our system, you are not impacted.

“It is only needed when a new taxpayer offices and they show their Ghana Card, then we go to NIA and say, somebody has showed their Ghana Card, is it issued by you?

“And therefore, for existing taxpayers, both corporate and individuals, this matter is not having any impact at all. And therefore thatโ€™s why, as we say, it was inaccurate, the post that was out.โ€

Addressing the wider dispute, Mr. Sarpong acknowledged that there have been legacy arrangements between the two institutions, but said the matter is being handled at the leadership level.

โ€œBefore 2025 there was some form of legacy arrangement between the NIA and GRA.

But these arrangements were not conclusive.โ€

He revealed that he had already held discussions with the NIA Director-General to resolve the issue amicably and expressed disappointment that the matter was taken to the media.

โ€œAs far as the demand for debt is concerned, when I took over, I have from leadership perspective engaged the Director-General of NIA. We met here in GRA offices, and we discussed the matter, and we agreed that as leaders, we need to look at the issues and resolve them subsequently.

“Iโ€™ve also had a conversation with them, how what GRA believes the matter should be, and how they should. So for us as GRA, it came as a matter of surprise.

“Thatโ€™s something that we are speaking on as legacy, as leaders we came to meet, we have opened the door and accepted them to discuss further and resolve, so it was a huge surprise to hear our sister agency trying to take the matter to the media and solve it there.โ€

He insisted that government agencies must avoid destabilising public service delivery.

โ€œItโ€™s important to recognize that when you have problems, you cannot solve it all in the media. Itโ€™s a matter that we need to sit, to dialogue, to discuss in a spirit of collaborative manner and solve it.

“So you will notice that from GRA perspective, we have extended another professional arm to our sister agency to say, look, letโ€™s sit down. We know there are issues in this area. We donโ€™t fully agree with your sessions and claims, but we are prepared to lead a way to discuss and to resolve the matter.

“So weโ€™ve extended a hand to them to lead and resolve. I believe that that is what leadership is for, and the two of us are government institutions to serve the people. Our actions should not lead to destabilizing service to the people or disturbing our core mandate.

“So we are committed to work with NIA, and we call upon them to extend, take on the hand that we have extended, and let us resolve the matter and deal with it.โ€

Dancehall star Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr, has spoken publicly following his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He was freed after meeting bail conditions tied to an investigation involving his yellow 2019 Lamborghini Urus.

Shortly after his release, Shatta Wale went live on TikTok to express gratitude to several people, including EOCO officials.

โ€œOne Don is safe and Iโ€™m home now. I just want to say a big thank you for supporting me and for being around me in times like this, because I needed you guys the most. You are the ones that hold me down.

โ€œOnce again, I want to say a big thank you to everybody that has supported me. Shoutout to the original One Don, who has been like a father to me and very supportive as well.

โ€œTo all the staff of EOCO, you have been wonderful. At least when I came there, you really took me through the rightful processes that were needed and I just want to say God bless you.

โ€œMr Raymond Acher, I want to thank you so much for your understanding,โ€ he said.

The artiste was detained on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, after voluntarily appearing at EOCO headquarters in Accra with his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo.

The inquiry centres on allegations of irregularities surrounding the luxury vehicle, which was earlier seized by authorities on suspicion of being connected to a wider financial scandal in the United States. Investigators are also probing possible breaches of Ghanaโ€™s tax regulations relating to the car.

Popular SUV Models Top Ghana’s Stolen Vehicle Watchlist

0

Eoco

Ghanaโ€™s anti-financial crime unit has issued a warning to car buyers about four vehicle models particularly vulnerable to theft and illegal trafficking.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office identified Honda CR-V, Ford F-150, Range Rover, and Dodge Ram as the most commonly recovered stolen vehicles in recent operations.

An EOCO official explained that these models appear frequently in their interception operations, making them red flags for potential buyers. The warning comes amid growing concerns about Ghana serving as a destination for vehicles stolen from North America and other regions.

Authorities advise extra caution when encountering newer model vehicles that seem unusually affordable or perfect. โ€œIf you look at one of those vehicles that was recently released, maybe a 2023 or 2024 model, which is accident-free, it should be a red flag,โ€ the official noted.

The agency recommends that buyers verify a vehicleโ€™s status through Interpol before completing any purchase, especially for these high-risk models. While these four brands currently top the watchlist, EOCO emphasizes that other popular vehicles including Toyota Highlanders and Honda Accords have also been targeted by theft networks.

This alert reflects ongoing efforts to combat organized vehicle crime in West Africa, where luxury and popular models often change hands through informal channels without proper documentation.

Why BoG stopped large corporates from withdrawing FX

A banking consultant, Dr Richmond Atuahene, has welcomed the Bank of Ghanaโ€™s ban on the withdrawal of foreign currency by large corporates.

According to him, the Central Bankโ€™s directive reinforces its earlier warning against the practice of transacting in foreign currencies in Ghana.

Banking Shake-Up: BoG says no more foreign cash for corporates without matching deposits

The Bank of Ghana announced an immediate ban on the withdrawal of large volumes of foreign currency by corporates, including Bulk Oil Distribution Companies, mining firms, and other large businesses, unless such withdrawals are backed by matching deposits.

The regulator noted that the practice puts avoidable pressure on the foreign exchange market and undermines efforts to stabilise the local currency.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb Businessโ€™ Stella Dziedzorm Sogli, Dr Atuahene said, โ€œI think itโ€™s about enforcing the notice. You see, we donโ€™t trade in dollars and pounds in Ghana, we deal with cedis. If you allow more people to withdraw dollars unchecked, the dollar could become the major trading currency in your country and eventually debase your own currency.โ€

The consultant explained that some companies were withdrawing foreign currency amounts beyond the balances in their foreign exchange accounts.

He noted that Bulk Oil Distribution Companies and others operate foreign exchange accounts into which they deposit forex, but in some cases, withdrawals were made without equivalent deposits.

โ€œNormally, you pay physical dollars and withdraw physical dollars. But if you have a foreign currency account, you donโ€™t just go to the bank and demand dollars because your account is a nostro. There is a holding balance in that account overseas. What businesses were doing was withdrawing funds they hadnโ€™t actually deposited. What the Bank of Ghana is saying is simple, donโ€™t withdraw foreign currency if you donโ€™t have the deposits in your account. Donโ€™t misuse your nostro account to access dollars,โ€ Dr Atuahene explained.

Zoomlion Intensifies Malaria Fight by Targeting Mosquito Breeding Sites

Ghana has launched a nationwide effort to eliminate malaria by attacking the disease at its source.

Waste management company Zoomlion is leading a program that targets mosquito breeding grounds before insects can mature and spread illness.

This initiative represents a strategic shift in Ghanaโ€™s health approach, moving from controlling malaria symptoms toward completely eliminating the disease.

The program focuses on larval source management, which includes reclaiming land, clearing streams, and applying environmentally sensitive treatments to prevent mosquito development.

Health officials explain that stopping mosquitoes before they become flying adults breaks the transmission chain for malaria and other vector-borne diseases.

The approach is more cost-effective than large-scale insecticide spraying and reduces environmental impact while protecting other malaria control methods.

The program brings together research institutions, health authorities, and local communities. Volunteers are being trained to identify and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed near their homes.

Health authorities are urging all citizens to participate by reporting stagnant water sites, covering water containers, and maintaining clean environments. Officials emphasize that eliminating breeding sites is essential to eliminating malaria entirely from Ghana.

Mahama Government puts economic dipomacy at core of Ghana-Japan investment tiesย

By James Amoh Junior, GNAย ย

Yokohama, Japan, Aug. 22, GNA โ€“ Ghana has assured Japanese businesses of a strengthened and secure investment environment under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, as the country pivots its foreign policy to prioritize economic diplomacy.ย

Ghanaโ€™s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reaffirmed governmentโ€™s commitment to creating the right conditions for international investors to thrive.ย ย

Speaking at the Presidential Investment Forum held on the sidelines of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, Mr Ablakwa highlighted the progress achieved since President Mahama assumed office in January this year.ย

The three-day TICAD conference, which brought together African leaders, development partners, and investors, focused on strengthening partnerships to accelerate Africaโ€™s economic transformation, with Ghana positioning itself as a prime destination for Japanese investment in West Africa.ย

He recalled that during his inauguration on January 7, 2025, President Mahama declared that Ghana was โ€œopen for business once again,โ€ a statement which, he said, had since been backed by deliberate reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, rebuilding investor confidence, and strengthening diplomatic ties with strategic partners such as Japan.ย

He emphasized that Ghanaโ€™s economy, once under severe strain, had witnessed a remarkable turnaround under the new administration.ย ย

โ€œOur currency is now regarded as one of the best performing in the world. Macroeconomic stability has been restored, and the sovereign rating agencies have all begun to upgrade Ghana,โ€ the Minister said.ย ย

โ€œWe are no longer in junk status, and we are no longer a bankrupt country, thanks to the visionary leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,โ€ Mr Ablakwa told delegates comprising ministers of state, ambassadors, senior government officials, business leaders, and development partners.ย

Underscoring the centrality of investment diplomacy in Ghanaโ€™s foreign policy direction, the Foreign Affairs Minister disclosed that President Mahama had directed his ministry to prioritize economic fortunes in its dealings abroad.ย ย

As part of this vision, the government is set to introduce an unprecedented performance-based framework for Ghanaโ€™s diplomatic corps.ย ย

โ€œOn the 1st of September, the President will be launching a novel KPI, key performance indicators, for all ambassadors and diplomats from the Republic of Ghana. This has never happened in our history. And when you peruse that document, you will see that economic diplomacy is at the heart of it,โ€ Mr Ablakwa revealed.ย

He explained that the new system would ensure that Ghanaโ€™s diplomacy made tangible contributions to job creation, investment promotion, and the improvement of livelihoods at home.ย ย

โ€œOur diplomacy must lead to the improvement in the lives of the people. Diplomacy must promote investment and create a safe haven for all those who invest in our country,โ€ he said.ย

Mr Ablakwa commended Japanese businesses operating in Ghana, noting that their contracts and investments had been fully respected since the new administration took office.ย ย

He mentioned Toyota Chusho, Honda, and Suzuki as examples of Japanese companies that had expanded operations in Ghana, creating jobs and boosting industrial activity.ย ย

โ€œNo Japanese business, no contractual arrangement that was inherited has been adversely affected. We are delighted to see the progress of Japanese car manufacturers and other companies thriving under this positive business climate,โ€ he said.ย

He further pointed to engagements with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) which confirmed that Japanese investors were experiencing Ghanaโ€™s renewed commitment to business-friendly policies.ย

The Minister assured prospective Japanese investors of comprehensive government support, from Ghanaโ€™s diplomatic mission in Tokyo through to key institutions such as the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness.ย

โ€œWe are determined to ensure that your investment is not only protected, but that you also have good returns. Under President Mahama, you can be assured that your choice in Ghana will be the best decision you ever made,โ€ he pledged.ย

Acknowledging the longstanding bilateral relations between Ghana and Japan, Mr Ablakwa paid tribute to the historical contributions of figures such as Dr Hideyo Noguchi, who left a lasting legacy in Ghana.ย ย

He also applauded Japanโ€™s continuous support for Ghanaโ€™s socio-economic transformation, citing the construction of the Volvo Bridge Project, the Tamale Electricity Expansion Project, and the Kumasi Ring Road Project as visible examples of Japanโ€™s contributions.ย ย

Japanese volunteer programmes, he noted, also remained instrumental in advancing education, healthcare, and community development across Ghana.ย

The Minister expressed optimism that the investment forum would further deepen Ghana-Japan cooperation.ย ย ย

โ€œWe have no doubt that we are going to double our trade and investment portfolios. We are going to have more businesses from Japan investing in Ghana, and also Ghanaian companies exploring opportunities in Japan,โ€ he said.ย

He thanked the Japanese government for maintaining a fair and open trading relationship with Ghana, noting that Japan had refrained from imposing tariffs and had kept its market accessible to Ghanaian businesses.ย ย

He reiterated that the forum marked the beginning of a new era of economic partnership between Ghana and Japan.ย ย

Shatta Wale Reassures Fans After Release from EOCO Custody

Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has broken his silence following his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office.

In a video message shared shortly after regaining his freedom, the musician sought to reassure his concerned supporters about his wellbeing.

Addressing his fans directly, the artist stated, โ€œYour king is safe,โ€ while expressing gratitude for their unwavering support during what he described as a challenging period. He specifically thanked his management team and those who stood by him throughout the process.

Notably, the musician also acknowledged EOCO staff for their professional handling of the situation, mentioning particular officials by name. This gesture suggests a relatively cordial resolution to his detention, which lasted less than twenty-four hours.

The message has brought relief to the artistโ€™s fanbase, many of whom had gathered outside EOCOโ€™s offices during his detention. The case involving investigations into a luxury vehicle continues, but the artistโ€™s release on reduced bail conditions has temporarily eased tensions among his supporters.

Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has been released from custody after his bail conditions were significantly reduced.

The musician was detained for less than twenty-four hours as part of an investigation into a luxury vehicle suspected to be connected to international fraud.

Originally set at 10 million Ghana cedis, the bail amount was halved to 5 million cedis with two sureties. This development came after the artistโ€™s fans gathered outside the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office demanding his release.

The investigation centers on a Lamborghini Urus that American authorities have linked to a convicted fraudster currently serving a prison sentence in the United States. The vehicle was seized from the musicianโ€™s residence in early August following a request from the FBI and US Justice Department.

While the artistโ€™s management team has criticized the investigation as a witch hunt against successful musicians, authorities maintain this is part of legitimate international cooperation in combating financial crime. The case highlights growing scrutiny of high-value asset acquisitions and their documentation in Ghanaโ€™s entertainment industry.

New Gold Board Faces Criticism Over Revenue Capture Limitations

0

Goldbod
Goldbod

Ghanaโ€™s recently established Ghana Gold Board is facing early criticism from economic experts who question its ability to address the countryโ€™s longstanding revenue challenges.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies argues that the boardโ€™s current mandate fails to fundamentally resolve issues of national ownership and value capture from Ghanaโ€™s gold resources.

The board, created under legislation passed earlier this year, was designed to regulate and manage artisanal and small-scale gold exports with aims to reduce smuggling and boost foreign exchange reserves. But researchers point out that the boardโ€™s exclusion of large-scale mining operations which account for nearly seventy percent of Ghanaโ€™s gold output significantly limits its potential impact.

An IFS research fellow noted that while the board may generate foreign exchange through trading activities, this doesnโ€™t address the core problem of Ghana struggling to capture full value from its mineral wealth. The criticism highlights an ongoing tension between establishing regulatory bodies and implementing substantive reforms that would ensure the nation benefits more substantially from its natural resources.

The government had hailed the Gold Board as a transformative step toward stabilizing the currency and increasing accountability in the gold sector. However, critics maintain that deeper structural reforms may be necessary to truly maximize national benefits from Ghanaโ€™s most valuable mineral resource.

Diaspora Leader Cynthia Engmann Installed as Osu Development Queenmother

A Ghanaian-American nurse and community leader from Columbus, Ohio, has been enstooled as the Development Queenmother of Osu in a historic ceremony in Accra. Cynthia Engmann, now known by her stool name Naa Maku Osonaa I, has been charged with the empowerment and revitalisation of the area’s youth.

The coronation of the Osu Oblantai A Manye took place on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Lomo We, Osu. The event, which saw her adorned in ceremonial white attire and traditional beads, formally elevated her to a leadership role focused on the youth of the historic district.

In her first public statement since the installation, Naa Maku Osonaa I issued a direct call to action to indigenous professionals of Osu living in Ghana and abroad: โ€œAll citizens of OSU who are professionals should come home and support the youth in diverse ways. We need financial and technical support to create real, lasting change.โ€

Ghanaian Industries Call for Crackdown on Illegal Imports

Local manufacturers are urging authorities to take stronger action against smuggled goods that undermine Ghanaโ€™s industrial sector.

The Association of Ghana Industries warns that illegal imports are creating unfair competition for businesses that follow tax and regulatory rules.

AGIโ€™s chief executive Seth Twum-Akwaboah expressed concern that smuggling continues to hurt legitimate manufacturers while giving advantages to those who bypass official channels. He emphasized that robust border controls are essential for protecting jobs and government revenue.

The industry group believes stopping illegal trade practices would help maintain the recent stability of Ghanaโ€™s currency and support economic growth. Manufacturers have long argued that a fair competitive environment is crucial for industrial development.

This latest call reflects ongoing worries among local businesses that face high operational costs while competing against imported goods that sometimes avoid taxes and quality checks. The association wants revenue authorities and border security agencies to intensify enforcement efforts.

How to Style It with Confidence and Class

0

In recent years, menโ€™s native wear has undergone a style renaissance. Once reserved strictly for cultural ceremonies or traditional events, native attire has now become a fashionable and expressive choice for weddings, social gatherings, and even modern-day celebrations. Its blend of heritage and elegance makes it a wardrobe staple for the modern man.

โ€œNative wear doesnโ€™t just tell a storyโ€”it tells your story,โ€ says fashion consultant Tunde Ayeni. โ€œItโ€™s a statement of identity, pride, and style all wrapped in one.โ€

So, how can men elevate their native wear to ensure they turn heads for the right reasons? Here are some practical tips to inspire a more stylish, polished look:

1. Focus on the Fit

The most essential rule in fashion applies here too: fit is everything. Whether you’re wearing a classic kaftan, agbada, or senator suit, the outfit should contour your body comfortably without being too tight or too loose. A well-tailored native outfit instantly makes you appear more refined and stylish.

Pro Tip: Visit a professional tailor who understands native cuts and can personalize the fit for your frame.

2. Accessorize with Intention

Accessories can elevate your look from simple to standout. Think caps (like the fila or red cap), coral beads, walking canes, or leather wristbands. These elements bring a regal and personalized touch to your appearance.

Donโ€™t overdo itโ€”choose 1โ€“2 statement pieces that complement your outfit without clashing.

3. Experiment with Fabrics and Colors

Gone are the days of playing it safe with just white or black. Rich hues like emerald green, royal blue, and burnt orange are taking center stage. Likewise, mixing texturesโ€”like pairing a cotton top with a brocade wrapper or velvet agbadaโ€”can create a visually striking look.

For a bold but balanced look, mix a textured fabric with a matte one to add contrast without overwhelming the outfit.

4. Mind the Details: Shoes and Grooming

Your footwear can make or break your native ensemble. Classic loafers, embroidered slip-ons, or leather sandals often pair well. In addition, groomingโ€”your haircut, beard, or even your scentโ€”completes the picture of a well-dressed man.

Choose shoes in neutral tones or leather textures to ensure they match a variety of native outfits.

5. Modernize the Classic Look

If you’re fashion-forward, consider adding modern twists: a shorter kaftan cut, minimalist embroidery, or even blending native fabric with western silhouettes (like a native shirt with formal trousers). This fusion reflects cultural pride and contemporary taste.

Final Thoughts

Menโ€™s native wear is more than just clothingโ€”itโ€™s a cultural canvas that reflects elegance, identity, and personal style. With a keen eye for fit, the right accessories, and a willingness to explore fabrics and trends, every man can master the art of looking sharp in traditional attire.

President Mahama urges Africa to act on rapid youth population growth

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Aug. 21, GNA โ€“ President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the need for African governments to urgently address the challenges posed by the continentโ€™s rapidly growing youth population.

He warned that Africaโ€™s demographic surge could become a ticking time bomb if governments fail to create enough jobs for the millions of young people entering the labour market each year.

Speaking during a panel discussion at a Public-Private Partnership Dialogue in Japan, as part of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, President Mahama stressed that traditional sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing alone could not absorb the rising workforce.

He identified the creative industry, renewable energy, and digital startups as emerging areas capable of generating jobs at a faster rate than the traditional economy, urging governments to channel greater investments into those sectors.
