NDC announces guidelines for Tamale Central by-election primaries

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has released guidelines for its parliamentary primaries ahead of the upcoming by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency in the Northern Region.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC outlined the processes aspirants must follow to participate in the contest.

This comes after the death of the constituency’s legislator, Murtala Mohammed, who died in the tragic helicopter crash on August 6.

According to the party, nomination forms will be available at its Northern Regional Office, where completed documents are also expected to be submitted. A certified copy of the delegates list will be made available to all aspirants after the vetting process.

The statement further disclosed that each aspirant will pay a non-refundable nomination fee of GH¢5,000. Additionally, a filing fee of GH¢40,000 is required, payable in cash only into the party’s official account at UMB Bank, Adabraka Branch.

However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities are entitled to a 50 percent reduction on the filing fee.

The party emphasized that cheques and bankers’ drafts would not be accepted. Instead, payments must be made directly into the designated account.

The NDC said an official timetable for the primaries has been attached and urged all aspirants and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the timelines outlined.

The party also called for unity, fairness, and decorum throughout the process.

Corporal punishment should be reintroduced – Chiana-Paga MP – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga and a member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has intensified calls for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools as a measure to curb growing indiscipline among students.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Wednesday, August 20, the legislator argued that the decision to abolish corporal punishment was misguided and that Ghana must establish clear policies to deal with misconduct in schools.

“I think we should establish clear policies to solve indiscipline in schools. We have to go back to corporal punishment. We always copied it wrongly. When we wanted to cancel it, we were citing America and other countries, but America has gone back. So we need to go back. We shouldn’t have even left in the first place,” Alamzy said.

He stressed that not every foreign practice is suitable for Ghana and that homegrown solutions should be prioritised. According to him, corporal punishment, when properly regulated, can deter bullying, harassment, and other forms of misconduct that have recently become widespread in schools.

His comments come in the wake of rising cases of indiscipline in senior high schools. A recent viral video showed a student of Accra Academy using a cutlass to flog two of his peers, sparking public outrage and renewed debate about discipline and character formation in the country’s educational institutions.

In another shocking incident, tensions gripped Kinbu Senior High School in Accra following the tragic death of a student, Addib Alhassan, who was fatally stabbed during an altercation reportedly stemming from a heated argument. The victim was rushed to the Adabraka Polyclinic and later referred to Ridge Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The MP underscored the need for strong preventive measures, including random searches in schools and stricter enforcement of discipline policies.

“We must educate our students not to be involved in bullying or harassment. We also have to make sure there is clear security in our schools to protect students,” he added.

Godwin Asediba says the award is a “call to carry forward the spirit of journalism”

Ghanaian journalist Godwin Asediba has won the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award.

The investigative reporter, filmmaker and news anchor, who is the 10th recipient of the accolade, works with TV3 and 3FM in Ghana. His stories have also appeared on several international broadcasters.

The 29-year-old often focuses on human-interest stories aiming to expose injustice and amplify the voices of marginalised communities.

The award, now a decade old, was created to honour Dumor, a Ghanaian journalist and presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.

He had worked tirelessly to bring a more nuanced narrative of Africa to the world, representing a confident, savvy and entrepreneurial side.

“Komla’s legacy reminds us that African stories deserve to be told with depth, dignity and a fearless commitment to truth,” Asediba said.

Winning the award was not just a “personal milestone” for the Ghanaian but also “a call to carry forward the spirit of journalism that informs, inspires and transforms”.

The award judges said they were impressed by Asediba’s investigative work and his unwavering belief in journalistic integrity.

One story that he was particularly proud of was his investigation into one of Ghana’s largest mortuaries that had been neglected, creating a public health risk.

Asediba is now set to travel to London where he will spend three months working with BBC News teams across television, radio and online.

He will also receive training and be mentored by leading BBC journalists.

Komla Dumor

A year before his death, Komla Dumor featured in New African magazine’s list of the 100 most influential Africans

“Over the past decade, the Komla Dumor Award has helped nurture some of Africa’s most talented journalists. It’s been a privilege to watch them grow and make a lasting impact, both at the BBC and beyond,” the BBC’s regional director for Africa Juliet Njeri said.

“This 10th anniversary stands as a powerful testament to Komla Dumor’s enduring legacy: his passion for bold, authentic storytelling and championing African voices lives on.”

As part of the placement, Asediba will travel to a country in Africa to report on a story that will be broadcast to the BBC’s global audiences.

Previous award recipients are Rukia Bulle, Paa Kwesi Asare, Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya, Victoria Rubadiri, Solomon Serwanjja, Waihiga Mwaura, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira, the inaugural winner.

Last year, Bulle travelled to Senegal to report on the Baye Fall – a Muslim subgroup whose striking appearance makes them stand out.

Ghana’s SMEs face higher, more volatile borrowing costs than households for June 2025

0

An analysis of the Annualized Percentage Rates (APRs) for June 2025 has revealed a significant disparity in loan costs, with households often receiving more favourable rates than Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The data, compiled by the Bank of Ghana, indicates that while households have access to lower APRs, SMEs face a wider and often higher range of borrowing costs, raising questions about the financial environment for business growth in the country.

According to the report, the APR reflects the true cost of a loan, including the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR), bank-specific risk premiums, and other charges.

For a three-year loan, the lowest APR for a household was 21.43% from Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC.

In stark contrast, the most favourable rate for an SME loan of the same tenor was higher, at 28.63%, also from Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC.

This pattern continues with five-year loans, where the lowest household APR stands at 20.70% (Republic Bank), while the best rate for an SME is 23.37% (Bank of Africa).

The data for one-year loans show a more complex picture. While the lowest APR for an SME from Absa Bank Ghana Limited was a highly competitive 17.03%, this appears to be an outlier.

The overall range for SMEs is significantly wider and more volatile.

The highest APR for a one-year SME loan was 45.13% from Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited, whereas the highest APR for a household loan was 42.24% from Prudential Bank Limited.

The discrepancy in rates is particularly pronounced when considering that many banks do not offer longer-term loans to SMEs.

The report shows numerous instances where “No loan with a tenor of three years was granted” or “No loan with a tenor of five years was granted” for SMEs.

This lack of access to long-term financing can hinder SMEs from making crucial long-term investments and strategic plans.

This trend highlights a potential systemic challenge, where banks may perceive SMEs as a higher credit risk compared to individual households.

While banks’ APRs are indicative and the actual rate depends on a borrower’s specific circumstances, the reported data suggests a broader pattern that could be stifling the growth of Ghana’s SME sector, a key driver of the economy.

Music and Arts Academy Ghana holds cultural fusion concert with Natascha Botchway

The Academy Orchestra of the Music and Arts Academy, Ghana, has staged a remarkable music and arts event in Accra dubbed “A Night with Natascha Botchway.”

The concert featured Natascha Botchway, a Ghanaian-German award-winning virtuoso with the German Orchestra, who joined students and tutors of the academy to deliver a performance that blended Western classical traditions with indigenous Ghanaian sounds.

The show saw Mozart’s timeless pieces dance alongside compositions by Ghana’s Varrick Armaah, creating a rich fusion that celebrated cultural bridges through music.

The audience was treated to a memorable evening of artistic brilliance and collaboration.

The Music and Arts Academy, Ghana, was born out of the COVID-19 lockdown when parents sought meaningful pastimes for their children.

What began as a small initiative to train children in playing musical instruments has blossomed into a thriving academy with a budding orchestra.

Today, that orchestra has matured into a platform where young talents are showcased alongside seasoned musicians on both local and international stages.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Board of the Academy, Godfred Edusei Derkyi reiterated that the academy was born from the creative adaptation during the COVID-19 lockdown noting that over the past few years, the academy has nurtured young musical talent,

He pointed out that the recital’s repertoire features a diverse selection of pieces that evoke a range of emotions, reflecting the richness of musical experiences from across the globe.

Mr. Derkyi drew a parallel between music and painting, likening the performances to an artist’s brush strokes that leave vibrant impressions on a canvas.

“The myriad colours of music will shine through in the performances we will experience today,” he stated, setting the stage for an inspiring night of artistic expression.

Speaking at the event, the founder of the Music and Arts Academy, Ghana, Ignatius Mensah, encouraged parents to consider introducing their children to music as a way of nurturing their growth and development.

He explained that music is a valuable skill that instills discipline, consistency, and dedication in young people.

“Instead of turning to the internet or tablets, consider introducing your children to the world of music. Music requires time, effort, and commitment, and these are lessons children can apply to any area of their lives,” he stated.

According to Mr. Mensah, the goal of the event was to provide young people with a platform to display their talents and to highlight the academy’s vision of building not just musicians, but individuals of character and resilience.

“At the Music and Arts Academy, we are helping to build character, skill hands, and develop the hearts of the children we work with,” he added.

Speaking to the media after the event, Ghanaian-German award-winning violinist, Natascha Akosua Tenkorang Botchway Dakowa, who was the guest of honour praised the organisers for the musical concert, the passion and enthusiasm of young Ghanaian musicians.

The virtuoso with the German Orchestra described the experience as deeply inspiring. “It’s wonderful to witness how much joy young children find in playing instruments. In Germany, learning an instrument is often viewed as a serious professional pursuit. But here in Ghana, it’s different. Even with rehearsals lasting for hours, the children are always having fun, and that’s what matters most,” she said.

She added that the event was so impactful that it deserves to be repeated.

“I believe this experience deserves a part two. One time is simply not enough, and we’ll find a way to make it happen,” she affirmed.

The performance brought together students as young as five alongside adults, from diverse backgrounds, united by their shared passion for music.

The night’s performance underscored the academy’s commitment to using music as a tool for personal development, cultural expression, and nurturing talent, marking another milestone in Ghana’s growing classical and traditional music space.

Helicopter tragedy a wake-up call to end partisanship – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Businessman and politician Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a 2028 NPP flagbearer hopeful, has described the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives as a wake-up call for Ghana to end unnecessary partisanship in national affairs.

Speaking in a live phone interview on Oman FM today, the Assin Central legislator cautioned against the over-politicization of critical national issues, stressing that propaganda and populism only serve to derail the nation’s progress.

“This tragedy should remind us that unnecessary partisanship is destroying our country. It is about time we ended the over-politicization of national issues. Propaganda and vitriolic attacks must not stifle important national projects,” he said.

Mr. Agyapong cited the long-debated matter of acquiring a new Presidential Jet as an example. According to him, former President Akufo-Addo’s administration faced needless opposition from some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when the proposal came up, even though, in the long term, a fit-for-purpose Presidential Jet would be more cost-effective than continuous expenditure on chartered flights.

He emphasized that attention should rather be placed on the benefits of presidential travels, including building international partnerships and attracting investments, rather than turning the issue into political banter.

“As politicians, we must be wary of the adverse impact of populism and propaganda on our national interest. Let’s rather pursue initiatives that will benefit the country,” he added.

The Assin Central MP, who has declared his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party into the 2028 general elections, urged both government and opposition leaders to learn from the tragic crash and put Ghana’s safety and development above political expedience.

Pokuase–Nsawam Road works to be completed on schedule – Roads Ministry – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has assured the public that the ongoing repair works on the Pokuase–Nsawam road will be completed on schedule without further delays.

This follows the return of contractors to the site after several months of halted construction caused by delayed payments.

The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, confirmed that GH¢809 million had been paid to the contractor as of August 4, 2025. The payment cleared the way for work to resume on the busy highway, bringing relief to commuters who had endured weeks of heavy traffic congestion.

The resumption also came just days before the one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) was due to expire. The union had threatened to suspend operations if the government failed to get the contractor back on site.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, August 20, Deputy Roads Minister Alhassan Suhuyini apologised to motorists for the inconvenience caused by the prolonged delay.

“I will first of all apologise to all motorists on that stretch. It is one of the potatoes that we inherited at the ministry. By the time we got to the ministry, the contractor, like many other contractors across the country, had already abandoned the site due to non-payment, and we have been working with the Finance Minister to ensure that we get some releases to these contractors so they can go back to the site.

“This contractor, as we speak, has received some payment and has adequately mobilised back to the site. It is not going to be a nine-day wonder; he is back to site,” Mr. Suhuyini assured.

Hearts of Oak Coach Didi Dramani raises fatigue concerns amid GHALCA Top 4 tournament – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the upcoming 2025 GHALCA Top 4 tournament, warning that players are at risk of fatigue as they are still in the early stages of preseason.

The competition is set to begin on Wednesday, August 20, with the Phobians facing Heart of Lions at 6 p.m. The fixture comes just three days after Hearts beat the same side 2-0 to win the 2025 Homowo Cup, raising concerns about player workload.

Dramani, who was appointed at the end of last season on a two-year deal to replace Aboubakar Ouattara, believes players are not ready for the demands of full 90-minute matches and has urged organizers to permit more than the standard three substitutions.

“I think that it is a very good program for the football industry, but the timing of it is worrisome,” Dramani said after the Homowo Cup.

“We need to try to alter the substitutions so that, in this [Heart of Lions] game for instance, if you have just worked for two weeks, you don’t go in for a high-profile game. If you can do multiple substitutions, then it’s easy for you to bring in more legs so that you don’t stress. I estimated 60 minutes for some players, but I ended up pushing them to 90 minutes. For me, deloading is so, so important when you really want to keep players fit.”

Hearts of Oak only qualified for the Top 4 after Nations FC were docked points last season, and while Dramani sees the competition as beneficial for Ghanaian football, he insists player welfare must come first.

Shatta Wale Detained by EOCO Over Seized Lamborghini Probe

Ghanaian music star Shatta Wale has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for questioning related to a luxury vehicle tied to an international money laundering case.

The artist, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., voluntarily appeared at the EOCO offices on Tuesday afternoon alongside his lawyer. His management team confirmed the detention in a public statement, urging fans to remain calm while the legal process unfolds.

This development follows the early August seizure of a yellow 2019 Lamborghini Urus from the musician’s residence in Trassaco Valley, Accra.

EOCO acted on a request from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice, which linked the vehicle to the criminal activities of Nana Kwabena Amuah. Amuah is currently serving an 86-month prison sentence in the U.S. for financial crimes.

According to the anti-graft agency, the Lamborghini is considered part of Amuah’s illicit gains and is subject to restitution proceedings. EOCO officials noted that Shatta Wale cooperated during the seizure and even requested discretion to avoid public attention, fearing damage to his brand.

The agency has classified both Shatta Wale and a former National Signal Bureau officer as persons of interest. Investigations are ongoing, with further cooperation expected between Ghanaian and U.S. authorities under mutual legal assistance protocols.

He made the remarks at a ceremony in Accra on Monday, August 18, 2025, to mark the launch of the historic Trans-African Tourism and Unity Campaign, a 40,000-kilometre road journey across 39 African countries aimed at advancing the cause of a visa-free Africa by 2030.

“Visa barriers fragment our shared African identity,” Mr Debrah said, adding, “The Mahama government envisions a continent where Africans travel freely, boosting trade, tourism, and unity.”

Sharing his own experiences of travelling across Africa, Mr Debrah urged participants to remain vigilant about their safety. “Take security seriously and avoid driving at night,” he advised.

Highlighting the economic potential of tourism, he noted that, “Tourism contributes over US$190 billion annually to Africa’s GDP, yet visa restrictions limit intra-African travel. A visa-free Africa could double intra-African tourism, boosting local economies and creating jobs.”

The 163-day campaign aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which seeks to build a united and prosperous continent. Endorsed by the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project is led by former Ghanaian legislator Ras Mubarak.

It aims to promote continental unity, cultural exchange, and sustainable tourism.

The journey made its first stop in Lomé, Togo, on 18 August, before continuing to Cotonou in Benin and then Nigeria. Other destinations include Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa), Angola, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia and the Central African Republic.

From there, the convoy will travel through Chad, Niger, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, before concluding in Ghana.

The Trans-African Tourism and Unity Campaign is seen as a bold step towards breaking down visa barriers, boosting intra-African tourism, and driving economic growth, youth empowerment and cross-border collaboration.

Beginning in Ghana’s vibrant capital, the journey symbolises Africa’s shared heritage and its collective ambition for an integrated, visa-free continent.

“History will honour leaders who act decisively to unite Africa,” said Ras Mubarak, the lead campaigner. “A visa-free Africa by 2030 is not just a dream — it is a necessity to unlock our continent’s potential in tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.”

The campaign itinerary includes meetings with African Heads of Government to present letters advocating visa-free policies, press briefings in each country, cultural showcases, and stakeholder engagements to promote tourism as a catalyst for unity and economic inclusion.

Mr Mubarak, a committed Pan-Africanist, added: “This campaign is a movement to reclaim Africa’s narrative through open borders and shared prosperity. By fostering a visa-free Africa, we pave the way for a stronger, more connected continent for future generations.”

The campaign is supported by a coalition of partners committed to Africa’s development, including the Office of the Chief of Staff of Ghana, Afrimex Gold, National Investment Bank, Ghana Gold Board, GLICO Insurance, GNPC, Telecel Ghana, National Lottery Authority, Delcielo Optical Services, Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Stanbic Bank Ghana, the Pan African Progressive Front, Africans Rising, and Radisson Blu Brazzaville.

The partners bring expertise across finance, insurance, energy, telecommunications, hospitality and civil society, ensuring the campaign’s reach, impact and sustainability.

Kennedy Agyapong: Helicopter crash should end ‘unnecessary’ politicisation of national issues

0

NPP flagbearer aspirant and former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has called for an end to what he described as the “unnecessary politicisation” of critical national matters, following the recent military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished individuals.

In an interview with Oman FM shared on his Facebook page, Mr Agyapong lamented the tendency of political actors, particularly from opposition parties, to exploit national debates for partisan gain, warning that such conduct weakens Ghana’s collective progress.

“The recent helicopter crash that claimed eight precious lives should be a wake-up call for us all on the extent to which unnecessary partisanship is destroying our country,” he stated.

He specifically cited the long-standing controversy over the proposed acquisition of a new presidential jet under the Akufo-Addo administration, a matter that sparked fierce opposition in Parliament.

Mr Agyapong accused North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, of spearheading what he termed a campaign of “unwarranted politicisation” over the matter.

He noted the irony that the parliamentary delegation overseeing the acquisition process was led by James Agalga, the NDC’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee.

“For the sake of political expedience, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa vehemently opposed the acquisition and engaged in unfortunate banter. He must bow his head in shame and apologise for his disservice to our dear country,” the former MP charged.

Mr Agyapong argued that the long-term economic prudence of acquiring a fit-for-purpose presidential aircraft far outweighs the ongoing cost of luxury chartered flights.

He further stressed that attention should be directed at the positive diplomatic and investment opportunities that presidential travels can yield.

“In the long term, the acquisition of a fit-for-purpose presidential jet is economically prudent compared to the expenditure incurred on presidential travels devoid of the same,” he said. “Additionally, the focus must rather be on the potential benefits of presidential travels.”

The businessman-turned-politician warned fellow politicians to avoid fuelling populism and propaganda at the expense of national development.

“As politicians, we must be wary of the adverse impact of populism and propaganda on our national interest. Let’s rather pursue initiatives that would benefit the country.”

Eight arrested in Ablekuma North by-election violence – IGP – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed the arrest of eight suspects in connection with assaults that occurred during the recently held Ablekuma North constituency rerun elections.

Three journalists, as well as some political figures, were assaulted during the rerun of the Ablekuma North election in 19 polling stations on July 11, this year.

Speaking during a meeting between the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP revealed that the suspects were apprehended by the Accra Regional Police Command and are currently being processed for prosecution.

“The Accra Regional Commander, as of yesterday, said he had eight suspects. Eight suspects have been arrested,” Dr. Yohuno disclosed. “They are being processed, and from the advice I had from the Regional Commander, tomorrow or Friday, they will be put before the court.”

The rerun, which was marred by scenes of violence and attacks, drew widespread condemnation from the public, media, and civil society groups. Videos of individuals believed to be party operatives assaulting citizens and observers circulated online, prompting swift calls for accountability.

The IGP also assured the GJA that the Police Service is committed to ensuring justice and holding accountable anyone found culpable, including officers who failed to act professionally during the disturbances.

“We are making progress and we will make sure that whatever happens, justice will be done to those who in one way or the other, did not do their work in a professional manner,” he said.

Dr. Yohuno reiterated the police administration’s zero tolerance for misconduct and emphasised that the integrity of elections—and public trust—depends on the professionalism of law enforcement officers.

Sekyere Afram Plains MP launches green initiative for sustainability

0

In a strategic move to build climate resilience and restore ecological balance in Ghana’s forest-depleted zones, Nasira Afrah, the Member of Parliament for Sekyere Afram Plains, has launched the Nasira Green Initiative a community-based tree-crop planting project aimed at regenerating degraded land and strengthening local livelihoods.

The initiative, launched in the farming town of Drobonso, is being recognised as a significant example of climate leadership at the constituency level, blending environmental advocacy with socio-economic empowerment. It mobilises local communities to take ownership of the land restoration process through education, reforestation, and agroforestry.

“This is more than an environmental project it’s a call for grassroots action,” she Afrah said. “We’re restoring not only our land but also our dignity, our economy, and our children’s future.”

A Constituency Model for Climate-Responsive Development

The project responds to urgent environmental threats in the area, including illegal logging, seasonal bushfires, and climate-driven shifts affecting agricultural productivity. With food security and water access increasingly at risk, the Nasira Green Initiative positions itself as a locally driven solution with scalable potential. At the center of the program is the “One Person, One Tree” campaign a participatory model that calls on every resident to plant and care for at least one tree.

The goal is to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship and shared responsibility. “We cannot wait for national interventions alone. Communities must lead the way in protecting their environment,” Nasira Afrah told attendees.

Community Buy-In and Institutional Support

The launch drew wide participation from local and traditional authorities, including the Drobonsohene, Nana Dwamena Dankwa Dwibisaw, who lauded the initiative as a “transformative vision” for rural sustainability.

He called on community members to take personal ownership of tree planting efforts and proposed future incentive schemes for participants. Officials from the Forestry Commission and the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) were present, offering technical and logistical support to ensure the long-term viability of the project. District Chief Executive Abubakar Issaka underscored the project’s alignment with national land restoration policies and Ghana’s broader climate adaptation goals.

“This initiative speaks directly to our development needs and our future. It is both timely and visionary,” he said.

Building Environmental Justice from the Ground Up

For Nasira Afrah, the project reflects a broader political commitment to environmental justice, rural empowerment, and long-term constituency development. “We are planting seeds not just of trees, but of justice, accountability, and sustainable growth,” she said.

The Nasira Green Initiative is expected to contribute to job creation, soil rehabilitation, and biodiversity preservation in Sekyere Afram Plains, creating a model that other rural constituencies could emulate.

As Ghana faces mounting climate challenges, the story unfolding in Sekyere Afram Plains serves as a reminder: the most powerful climate solutions often begin at the grassroots led by the very people whose lives are most affected.

UG warns against encroachment on Borteyman lands – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The University of Ghana has issued a strong warning to individuals and groups encroaching on its legally acquired lands at Borteyman in the Greater Accra Region, stressing that any unauthorised occupation or development on the property constitutes a criminal offence.

In a public notice issued on August 20, the University said it remains the rightful owner of the lands, holding a valid title and documentation covering the entire stretch at Borteyman. It cautioned that any unauthorised entry, sale, construction, allocation, or other activities on the land amount to criminal trespass and encroachment.

The University cited the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806), and the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) as legal bases for its claim, emphasising that offenders could face prosecution, heavy fines, and imprisonment.

According to the notice, the University will not hesitate to enforce the law through legal actions, including writs of possession, claims for damages, prosecution of trespassers, or demolition of unauthorised structures at the expense of encroachers.

It further advised the public to refrain from engaging in any dealings or purported allocations on the land, warning that anyone who disregards the caution does so at their own risk and will face legal consequences.

Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani defeated KT Hammond in the 2024 parliamentary contest

The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa Constituency, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, has disclosed that his victory over the former MP for the area, Kobina Tahir Hammond (KT Hammond), keeps earning him public praise and monetary rewards.

According to the MP, his victory in the 2024 general election was an act of liberation for the people of the constituency who had been under the leadership of the former MP for 24 years.

“If, by the grace of God, the people of Adansi Asokwa have been liberated from trials and tribulations through me, the insults and all the disgrace should stop, because you people dash me money when I go out. They ask, ‘Are you the one who overthrew KT Hammond?’ When I respond in the affirmative, I am given a token to buy fuel,” he stated.

The MP made the comment when a High Court in Obuasi dismissed an election petition filed by the former MP to challenge Animli’s victory.

According to reports, the case, filed on January 15, 2025, was struck out by the court after the petitioner failed to appear on three consecutive occasions.

The court further imposed a fine of ₵60,000 on the former MP.

Speaking to the media after the court’s ruling, he stated that the ruling by the court is a vindication of his victory and the incompetence of the case filed against him by the former MP.

“The substantive issue was not even addressed because he breached all the laws guiding election petitions. By the grace of God, the court has listened to what my lawyers and I said and has dismissed the case. When I get back, many of my constituents will be happy that he has lost again, and many people will be tagging him with all kinds of things that he could have avoided in the first place,” he stated.

Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress, won the December 7, 2024, polls for Adansi Asokwa Constituency with 14,229 votes against KT Hammond, who polled 13,725.

Gunmen in Nigeria kill Muslim worshippers in ‘reprisal attack’

0

Gunmen in north-west Nigeria have stormed a mosque, killing Muslim worshippers in what the local government has called a “reprisal attack”.

Police in Katsina state said 17 worshippers were shot dead by the assailants – known locally as bandits – but other reports from the region say the death toll is higher.

The mosque, located in the village of Unguwan Mantau, was attacked on Tuesday because local residents had ambushed and killed a number of “bandits” two days earlier, Katsina state official Nasir Muazu said.

Banditry is rife in north-western Nigeria, where armed gangs target locals, often for financial gain.

Muazu, Katsina state’s commissioner for internal security, said the attack occurred during morning prayers and that the gunmen shot “sporadically”.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the attackers remained at large. Muazu said the police and military personnel had been deployed to find them.

Despite the reprisal, Muazu said the local government “reaffirms its unwavering support for community-based security initiatives”.

Residents of Unguwan Mantau, meanwhile, have been mourning and tending to the wounded. As per tradition, grieving families have been sitting outside their homes, accepting condolences from visitors.

Ali Isa Pantami, a popular Islamic cleric and Nigeria’s former communications minister, hit out at the killers, saying they “betray the sense of humanity on earth”.

“We urge the relevant security agencies to ensure the arrest of the criminals and bring an end to this inhumanity and criminality of the highest order,” he wrote in a statement posted to social media.

“The killers of defenceless people are heartless, malevolent, and worse than animals.”

Nigeria’s vast north-west region borders Niger and criminal gangs criss-cross between the two countries, evading capture.

Katsina and neighbouring state Zamfara have been hit the hardest by banditry in the region, losing the most lives and experiencing the most displacement as a result of the problem.

Just days ago, kidnappers in Zamfara abducted and killed at least 35 people, despite ransoms being paid for their release, a local official told the BBC.

NDC won’t apologise for criticising Akufo-Addo’s luxury jet rentals – Kwakye Ofosu

0

Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) owes no apology for criticizing President Akufo-Addo’s use of expensive rented private jets.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s show, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu argued that, unlike Akufo-Addo, former President John Mahama did not waste public funds on luxury jets when the presidential aircraft was unavailable.

“When the presidential jet was not available, Mahama either used the Dzata jet if it was accessible, or flew commercial. He had the option of choosing extravagance but did not. So the NPP cannot justify Akufo-Addo’s wasteful expenditure with that comparison,” he said.

He explained that Ghana’s presidential jet is currently in France for maintenance and, once deemed fit, it will be used again or other alternatives will be considered.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stressed that the NDC will continue to discuss the issue “openly and transparently,” and rejected what he described as the ruling party’s “politics of equalisation.”

Kotoko players to be assessed for CAF Confederation Cup with GHALCA Top 4 tournament – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has welcomed the 2025 GHALCA Top 4 tournament, stressing its importance in preparing his squad for the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Kotoko suffered a narrow defeat in their opening fixture against Ghana Premier League champions Bibiani GoldStars on Wednesday at the University of Ghana Stadium, but Zito remains upbeat about the benefits of the competition.

According to the experienced tactician, the Top 4 offers the Porcupine Warriors valuable opportunities to test themselves against top-level opposition in Ghana, something he insists is difficult to arrange through friendlies.

“It [GHALCA Top 4] will help me a lot, it will help those of us who have qualified for Africa,” Zito said. “Because in Ghana, trying to find matches like this is very, very difficult. You don’t see Kotoko playing Hearts because they want to strengthen their team. You don’t see Medeama playing Kotoko in friendly matches. It doesn’t come. I will take this one as some of the friendly matches we are going to play and how I want my boys to play. So I will assess the boys by the Top Four and see how best we can also face Africa.”

Kotoko begin their CAF Confederation Cup journey against Nigeria’s Kwara United in the first preliminary round, with the first leg scheduled in Ghana between September 19 and 21, before the return leg in Ilorin from September 26 to 28.

Progression will see Kotoko face a stern test against Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca in October, a clash Zito believes his side must be fully prepared for.

High Court dismisses K. T. Hammond’s 2024 election petition, slaps him with Gh¢60k fine

0

The High Court in Obuasi in the Ashanti region has dismissed an election petition filed by former Trade and Industry Minister, Kobina Tahiru Hammond, popularly known as K.T. Hammond, against the victory of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani in the Adansi Asokwa parliamentary election.

In a ruling on Tuesday, 19th August 2025, Justice Kwabena Twumasi struck out the case and imposed a fine of Gh¢60,000 on Mr Hammond, describing the petition as a waste of the court’s time.

Speaking after the ruling, counsel for Mr Dorani, Richard Andy, said the petition lacked merit and expressed relief that the matter had been resolved.

He noted that the decision would allow the MP to concentrate fully on his parliamentary duties.

K.T. Hammond, who lost his seat in the 2024 general elections after more than two decades as MP, was defeated by Mr Dorani with a margin of 954 votes.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate secured 14,229 votes, while Mr Hammond polled 13,275.

Dissatisfied with the result, the former Minister filed a petition at the Obuasi High Court on 15th January 2025, challenging the outcome.

However, his repeated failure to appear before the court on three occasions led to the dismissal of the case.

Treat journalists with respect – IGP to Police officers – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has urged police officers to treat journalists assigned to cover the Akwatia by-election with moderation and respect.

This follows an assault on a journalist by a police officer during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun in July this year.

Speaking during a meeting between the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP emphasised the important role the media plays in elections and national development.

“All we are telling police personnel countrywide is that the brothers and sisters who hold the camera and the phones to take whatever they want during the election time—I think there is a level to which they can go, but you have to be moderate in handling them,” he said.

He explained that journalists serve as a vital link between the events on the ground and the general public, who rely on media coverage to stay informed.

“Because without them, the rest of the people who are at home watching—they cannot see what is going on… Some of us, we have reached this stage, and without the media, nobody would have heard of our name,” he added.

The IGP also assured media personnel of their safety during the election period, stressing that the police will ensure their protection.

“We will make sure that we will protect you,” he stated.

Currently ongoing is an exercise by a Headmaster, who has decided to crack the whip on the widespread abuse of academic titles.

In 2009, I addressed the same theme on the platform of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, as part of activities marking the Academy’s golden jubilee celebrations.

Below, I present excerpts from my lecture, which come in three readable parts:

Title Abuse and the Politics of Honor in Academia

Academies throughout the world are conclaves of distinguished scholars, who have voluntarily taken on the responsibility of promoting learning and knowledge production, towards national development. To be admitted to fellowship, and be given the title FGA in Ghana here, is indeed a very high recognition all young scholars and practicing scientists should aspire to.

Standards Setting

“If the Academy recognizes high standards, so is it expected to draw attention to blatant infractions of academic norms and ethics that undermine academic integrity. The latter role could be exercised more explicitly under one clear objective of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, which is to establish and maintain high standards of endeavor in all fields of study.

It is indeed not surprising that the Academy has emphasized the quest for excellence as the theme for its Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

In advocating excellence, and reinforcing compliance with academic norms and standards, it is my suggestion that GAAS, when or where necessary, should not shy away occasionally, from fishing in troubled waters.

I have in mind here the opportunity we have as an Academy, to boldly repudiate the gross misuse, abuse and sometimes the fraudulent uses of academic titles and academic honors, by impostors, and academic charlatans. I refer indeed to the current explosion of titles, honors, and awards of dubious quality and provenance. The current proliferation of titles could indeed trigger a major devaluation of honors and academic credentials in this country.

Some of the titles, particularly those purported to be international, turn out to be nothing but phony street side commodities that are subject to normal price negotiation and payment. Indeed the awards and honors industry is now a lucrative business, which has found fertile grounds in the local penchant for pomp and pageantry; and it should be the duty of major stakeholders, such as the Academy, to undertake periodic intervention.

The issue has been compounded by the public’s reverence for academic titles, and the assumed capacity of lofty epithets to expedite one’s rise to fame and political power, whether as minister, member of parliament, municipal or district chief executive.

There is indeed a general perception that high academic laurels of an aspirant to political office, could enhance his credibility and capacity to canvass for local and national development. Public controversy has often been raised when doubtful academic credentials have been paraded by public officials in their official resumes.

Sometimes the claim is openly contested by well meaning critics and public spirited individuals seeking to set records straight.

A former presidential candidate of the ruling party has, for instance, been accused by his critics of parading false academic or doctoral credentials, an allegation he has vehemently denied.

A Municipal Chief Executive in Accra has had her masters’ degree credentials purportedly obtained from the University of Ghana, publicly disputed by her opponents.

The obsession with academic titles and qualification has become a major factor in the vetting of nominees for appointment to ministerial positions.

In certain cases where candidates for positions have claimed to have high academic qualifications, curious panels have insisted on certified evidence, which sometimes fails to materialize.

Only last week, British newspapers reported the story of the wife of the Speaker of Parliament, who lost a job because she told lies about her academic qualifications.

Disputed titles used in Ghana include religious honorifics. Without due process, lay preachers perhaps in the name of free expression, have elevated themselves overnight as pastors, reverend ministers, bishops and archbishops, bypassing laid down procedures in the conferment of such professional positions. Of late the title, ‘Reverend,’ soon after its use, has quickly attracted the title Doctor, Dr, to render the honoree a ‘Reverend Dr,’ or the like. A closer look would sometimes reveal that none of the titles has been properly earned. Indeed the current parliamentary book called, ‘Know your MPs,’ has one Member of Parliament, whose highest level of education is stated as ‘City and Guild Final,’ obtained in 1973.

To the contrary, he officially refers to himself in the official book as, Rev. Dr…, forgetting that he has already cited City and Guild Final, as his highest level of education. It is of course unknown if of late, the City and Guilds qualification, which we knew was pre-tertiary, now attracts the title Dr.

The proliferation of fake religious titles partly stems from a general boom in religious entrepreneurship over the years, and the expectation that grand titular prefixes could boost patronage, more so if it has academic flavoring.

Indeed, the prevalence of fraud and falsehood in the use of academic titles is partly due to the absence of regulatory frameworks strictly enforced by accredited bodies or professional associations, seeking to set standards and guidelines. The silence of professional bodies over the misapplication of honorifics, has wrought complete chaos in the ordering and meaning of titles, as well as their social applications. The chaotic deployment and stringing of epithets only devalues the discipline of title investiture, blurs the distinction between mediocrity and excellence, and deprives society of opportunities to isolate its cherished values. In the realm of academia, it compromises the quest for excellence and subverts the exacting standards set by society to recognize its best brains.

It is indeed evident that intellectual dishonesty is repudiated in most societies; and so is academic fraud, or the false assumption of intellectual ownership, where intellectual property has been filched or misappropriated. Knowledge is a precious property; yet even though the society makes a conscious effort to celebrate those who create and expand the frontiers of knowledge, creators of new knowledge are guided by laid down ethics in the application of intellectual property.
Source acknowledgment, for example, has been highly cherished by society as signaling intellectual humility.

Even in oral societies where the identification of authorship of received knowledge is a major challenge, sources of learning are frequently acknowledged as a mark of honesty and humility. A well bred speaker would, out of routine habit, attribute wise sayings to ancestors, and indulge in self humbling by occasionally denying one’s capacity for knowledge creation.

Among the Akan the formula, Asimesi na okaa n’asem se… ‘it’s so and so who spoke the following wise words,’ seeks to put on record the source of knowledge and wisdom espoused, without disowning responsibility for any blemishes in the application of that knowledge. It makes knowledge production an exercise in modesty, as well as puts on record the variety of intellectual capital others have produced, and which have now been marshaled in the quest for new knowledge.

The display of intellectual dishonesty, through the acquisition of false titles and accolades, can thus be considered a blatant attempt to undermine social ideals, that are founded on a time tested reward system that is performance driven. If hard work and excellence are applauded by society, it is also because lofty honors are not haphazardly conferred. Titles and laurels are most enduring if bestowed by accredited individuals and institutions of high esteem. It is said, If God does not enthrone you as king, and you confer a crown upon yourself no one bows before you.”

Cassettes and CDs paid artistes better than streaming ever will

Nana Poku Ashis is a talent manager Nana Poku Ashis is a talent manager

Talent manager Nana Poku Ashis has stated that the good old days of cassettes and CDs were far more rewarding for musicians than the current era of streaming platforms.

Speaking on Hitz FM, Ashis argued that even though technology has changed the way people consume music, cassettes and CDs provided a straightforward system for both artistes and distributors.

Too many people are loud and wrong about music business in Ghana – M.anifest

According to him, there is even a possibility that cassettes could find their way back into the music market.

Explaining his point, he said the advantage of physical formats was that artistes could quantify sales and know exactly how much money they were making.

He contrasted this with the challenges musicians face with streaming platforms, where royalties are calculated differently across the various digital service providers (DSPs), leaving artistes with less income than expected.

Cina Soul gave us a great album, where is she now? – Ashis quizzes singer’s management

“Cassettes and CDs generate more money. Because if you sell one unit, you know you have sold one unit but with the royalties, I still don’t understand the whole streaming thing. Everybody has a breakdown of how they are doing it.

“The DSPs are making more money as it stands than even the musicians and it’s a headache. Even for the elite, they are complaining. But back in the days, if I have one cassette and I’m selling it for GH¢10 okay the distributor takes GH¢2, I know I make GH¢8.

“It’s about how you find your distribution, once you can plug into your distributors and it goes around the country or globe, no stress. It still has its limits because now the shops that used to sell cassettes are no longer there, people have moved on…the avenues might be a problem,” Ashis stated.

Mahrez (L) and Salah (R) are the only African players to win the PFA Player of the Year award Mahrez (L) and Salah (R) are the only African players to win the PFA Player of the Year award

GhanaWeb Feature by Benjamin Sackey

Some African players have written their names in the history books of the Premier League, having managed to win the most prestigious award in the competition.

Despite numerous players excelling during their stint in the league, only Egyptian, Mohamed Salah and Algerian, Riyad Mahrez have been able to grab the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year award.

Both players managed to win the Premier League title with Liverpool and Leicester City, respectively, with sterling performances that caught the attention of fans and players.

Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year award

The Professional Footballers’ Association Men’s Players’ Player of the Year is an annual award given to the player who is adjudged to have been the best player in English football.

The award has been presented since the 1973–74 season, and the winner is chosen by a vote amongst the members of the players’ trade union, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA).

The award is regarded by players in the Football League as the highest accolade available to them due to it being picked by their fellow professionals.

Each member of the association votes for two players. A shortlist of nominees is published in April, and the winner of the award, along with the winners of the PFA’s other annual awards, is announced at a gala in London.

‘Teams should be deducted points or fined’ – Rooney on Semenyo’s racial abuse

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah clinched the 2024/2025 PFA Player of the Year award. This remarkable feat makes the Egyptian the first player to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award three times, cementing his legacy.

Unsurprisingly, he was also listed in the player-voted PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

Salah registered 29 league goals and a career-best 18 assists – only Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry have surpassed that number in the history of the Premier League.

The 2024/25 landmark campaign was among the 33-year-old’s best to date. It was enough to claim his fourth Golden Boot and second Premier League title for the Reds. An impressive feat for the forward who dominated this year’s voting by the PFA membership.

Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez won the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award in the 2015/2016 season while playing for Leicester City.

Mahrez scored 17 goals and made 11 assists in 34 league games to take Leicester to the title.

He held off competition from Harry Kane, Mesut Özil, Dimitri Payet, and his then-Leicester teammates Jamie Vardy and N’Golo Kanté to clinch the accolade.

Speaking to the media upon receiving the award, Mahrez said, “All the credit is for my teammates, seriously, and for my manager and the staff. Without them, I wouldn’t receive this award, and I wouldn’t score. It’s the team spirit, and I want to dedicate it to them.”

We’re confident in EC’s credibility ahead of Akwatia by-election – NPP – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has expressed confidence in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) ability to conduct a credible by-election in Akwatia, scheduled for September 2, 2025, following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

Speaking with Sammi Wiafe on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, August 20, Haruna Mohammed said the Commission has a proven track record of successfully organising elections in Ghana.

“I have always had confidence in the Electoral Commission; they have conducted successful elections in Ghana since time immemorial. The processes leading to elections in Ghana have always been very open, transparent. I have no doubt that the EC will conduct a free and fair election in Akwatia,” he stated.

The by-election comes against a backdrop of heightened political tension in the country, especially after incidents during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, which saw isolated clashes and assaults on journalists.

In response, the EC has engaged with security agencies and civil society stakeholders to safeguard voters, election officials, and media personnel in the lead up to the polls.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh-Yohuno, has disclosed that eight people have been arrested in connection with disturbances that marred the Ablekuma North election rerun.

Speaking at a meeting with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP reaffirmed the Police Service’s commitment to maintaining law and order during elections.

He said the suspects, currently in custody, are expected to be arraigned before court on Thursday, August 21.

“As of yesterday, we have eight suspects. Eight suspects have been arrested. They are being processed, and from the advice I had from the regional commander, tomorrow, they will be put before the court. Either tomorrow or Friday, all these suspects will be put before the court. So we are making progress. We will make sure that justice will be served to those people who, in one way or another did not do their work in a professional manner,” he stated.

‘It’s always the woman who starts it’ – Rev. Abbeam’s explosive take on Joy Prime’s Let’s Talk

0

Ambassador Rev. Dr. Abbeam Danso

A heated storm erupted on Joy Prime’s relationship show Let’s Talk when Ambassador Rev. Dr. Abbeam Danso boldly declared that women — not men — are the real initiators of sexual intercourse.

“There has never been a sexual intercourse that the approach is by a man. It is always by the woman,” he insisted, sparking gasps and debate among viewers.

According to him, this was how God designed it from the very beginning — women using their beauty to “seduce, capture and lure men.”

But that was just the beginning of his fiery remarks. Rev. Abbeam went on to warn women against pressuring men into marriage, saying that a long relationship or even having a child together does not guarantee commitment.

“Having a child with you doesn’t mean you qualify to be a wife,” he stated firmly.

He challenged women to be financially independent, arguing that men should not be the sole providers.

“As a woman, you should bring something to the table,” he said, adding that women who support their partners in projects leave men with no excuses to delay marriage.

Rev. Abbeam also criticised parents for neglecting their duty to guide their children’s relationships, accusing many of leaving their sons and daughters to “date blindly” without making proper inquiries.

On men’s intentions, he was blunt:

“Some men just want to keep you for sex because you’re attractive — not because they want to marry you.”

He further stressed that sex alone cannot sustain a relationship, warning that women who rely on it risk being disappointed.

To conclude, Rev. Abbeam laid down his formula for what makes a true wife: cleanliness, neatness, and personal growth.

“As a woman, what makes you a wife is how neat you are and how you keep your space clean. And you must also build your career,” he emphasized.

His comments have since sparked fierce debate on social media, with many questioning whether his views reflect reality or outdated stereotypes.

Let’s Talk airs every Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Joy Prime, providing an open, non-judgmental platform for raw discussions on love, sex, and relationships.

‘It’s a stupid idea for a musician to get married’

0

Chike is a Nigerian musician Chike is a Nigerian musician

Nigerian singer Chike has made a bold statement on the controversial topic of whether creatives should get married while active in the music industry.

In a video shared on Instagram on August 20, 2025, Chike stated that it is a bad idea for musicians to get married.

He explained that marriage comes with a certain label, which makes it difficult for musicians to freely perform as entertainers.

“I do not think that any young artiste, whether you are trending, trying to break in, or aiming for the next level in your career, this is my personal opinion, is ready to get married. In fact, I think it’s a foolish step,” he said.

‘Work hard’ – Shatta Wale tells musicians after acquiring new Lamborghini Urus

“If you’re surrounded by women and attracted to them, it starts to look like a problem. That same attraction cannot continue. If I were in the club today and somebody was grinding on me, that’s okay. But if I were married, it becomes an issue. People forget that I’m a married man,” he added.

Chike acknowledged that, despite personal choices, choosing marriage over music comes with significant limitations for a musician.

“This has nothing to do with being unfaithful to your partner. Personal choices are understandable, but I don’t think a young guy who has just entered music should get married. What are you getting married for? You have to sacrifice something to gain something,” he concluded.

Cedi now the world’s best-performing currency – President Mahama tells investors

0

John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, is currently the best-performing currency in the world, following years of volatility.

He also noted a significant drop in inflation to 13.7%, alongside a reduction in the cost of doing business.

Speaking at the Ghana Presidential Investment Forum, held on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX) on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, President Mahama announced that Ghana has successfully restored macroeconomic stability and boosted investor confidence.

“For those of you who know the history of the Ghanaian cedi, it’s been one of the most volatile currencies in Africa. A few years ago, it was ranked among the worst-performing currencies. I’m happy to announce that this year, the Ghana cedi has been the best-performing currency in the world,” he stated.

Interbank Market: Cedi trades at GH¢10.80 to $1 on August 20

According to him, these developments signal a strong turnaround in the local economy.

While courting Japanese investors, President Mahama highlighted Africa’s growth trajectory and vast market potential of 1.4 billion people.

“Let us marry Japanese precision with Ghanaian potential and create a win-win situation for ourselves,” he urged.

Meanwhile, the cedi has shown resilience against major trading currencies on the interbank market, particularly the US dollar.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s daily update, the cedi is trading at a buying price of GH¢10.79 and a selling price of GH¢10.80 to the dollar.

The British pound is being bought at GH¢14.56 and sold at GH¢14.58, while the euro is trading at a buying price of GH¢12.59 and a selling price of GH¢12.60.

George Boateng appointed as RAEC Mons head coach on a three-year deal

George Boateng has been appointed head coach of Belgian third-tier club RAEC Mons George Boateng has been appointed head coach of Belgian third-tier club RAEC Mons

Former Black Stars assistant coach George Boateng has been appointed head coach of Belgian third-tier club RAEC Mons, signing a three-year contract to succeed Emilio Ferrera.

The 49-year-old Dutch international had been unattached since leaving Coventry City in November 2024, following the arrival of Frank Lampard at the English Championship side.

Boateng, who holds a UEFA Pro License, brings extensive coaching experience, including a stint with the Ghana national team.

He served as an assistant coach during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Following a disappointing campaign, the Ghana Football Association dissolved the entire senior national team technical staff, paving the way for Boateng’s next move.

A former midfielder, Boateng retired from professional football in 2013 after notable spells in England with Coventry City, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest.

His coaching résumé also includes a head coach role with Malaysian side Kelantan and a stint as Aston Villa U-23 head coach.
