Concerned citizen petitions EC to hold by-election in Anyako Electoral Area

0

By Evans Worlanyo Ameamu

Keta (VR), Aug 21, GNA- Some concerned citizens in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have petitioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a by-election in the Anyako Electoral Area.

The call came as Mr. Wisdom Seade, the Assembly member of the Anyako Electoral Area was elevated to the position of the Keta Municipal Chief (MCE) position, making the position vacant.

Mr. Gilbert Korbla Keklie, a citizen of the Municipality, in a petition to the Electoral Commission, dated August 14, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, argued that the current representation in the Anyako Electoral Area was inadequate.

“In the quest to defend the 1992 constitution, l write to officially notify the EC that it has violated provisions as indicated supra of an Act of Parliament of Ghana Article 11(1)(b) of the constitution,” he stated.

He explained that in March 2025, in accordance with article 243 (1) of the 1992 constitution, Mr. Wisdom Seade, the then Assembly member of Anyako electoral area was appointed the MCE of Keta, which demanded for procedures by the EC to conduct a by-election.

He said that in accordance with Section 10(5) (c) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as amended and per the attached letter dated April 15,2025, Mr. Seade has resigned as the Assembly member of Anyako electoral area, but the EC has failed to conduct by-election since then.

“The secretary of the Keta Municipal Assembly has on May 15,2025 notified Keta EC about the resignation of Mr. Seade from his position as Assembly member of Anyako electoral area.”

Mr. Keklie said that per the letter dated June 9, 2025, the Keta EC has confirmed that the secretary to the Municipal assembly had complied with section 10(7) of the Local Governance Act 2016 (936).

He stated that the conditions proposed by the commission to compile list of all vacant electoral areas nationwide before conducting a by-election at Anyako electoral area was not grounded in law and same amount to breaches of Section 10(5) and (7) of the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936)

He added that, “This is because, even the electoral Commission of Ghana does not wait to compile list of vacant seats in Parliament before conducting a by-election if a vacancy occurs in Parliament.”

Mr. Keklie demanded that the EC shall, within 7 days from day one of receiving the notification, take steps to conduct a by-election at Anyako electoral area of the Keta Municipality to serve the area of fair representation in the Assembly.

He warned that, if the request were not meet within the stipulated period, he would further apply for judicial review in the nature of Mandamus at the High Court in the line with Article 141 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana and Order 55 of C.I 47, 2004 as amended to compel the EC to conduct by-election at Anyako.

Mr. Wisdom Seade, the former Assembly member of Anyako electoral area and the MCE of Keta also indicated that all necessary efforts were been put in place to pursue EC to conduct a by-election at Anyako for the area to have full representation in the assembly.

He urged citizens of Keta Municipality to remain calm and wait for the EC to put up the necessary items together for the by-election.

Some other citizens of the area GNA engaged also expressed worry about the situation with the electoral process and called on the EC to institute its constitutional mandate to ensure fair representation and conduct free and fair elections for the area.

The EC was responsible for compiling the register of voters, demarcating electoral boundaries, and conducting public elections and referenda, and commission is expected to make regulations for the effective performance of its functions, including voter registration and election conduct.

According to Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution, every citizen has the right to vote, and the EC was mandated to ensure that all citizens have equal access to the electoral process.

Meanwhile, many believed that if the petition is successful, the EC may be required to conduct a by-election in the Anyako electoral area which would possibly involve a new electoral process, including voter registration, nomination of candidates, and voting.

The real names behind current football stars

(L-R) Dele Ali, Bukayo Saka, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal (L-R) Dele Ali, Bukayo Saka, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal

Nicknames have become very popular in the world of sports because it is easy for brand projection and also for supporters who might struggle to pronounce the official names of some of the biggest icons in the game.

Almost every footballer in the world has a nickname, some get to chose their own but others are given specific nicknames by fans or the media because of their skill set and what they do with the ball on the pitch.

There are others who have also chosen to shorten their names to make it simple on their jerseys, scoreboards and highlights reels.

The late Pele revealed that he sticked with his nickname because it was easier to market himself with it than using his real name “Edson Arantes do Nascimento”.

In this photo story, we look at the real names of active footballers, you probably didn’t know;

Manhyia Palace marks one-week observance for Asantehemaa – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Manhyia Palace on Thursday, August 21, held the one-week observance of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, marked by traditional rites and the presence of chiefs, royals, and mourners.

Her passing was formally announced on August 11 by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during a meeting of the Asanteman Council, which brought together all paramountcies and clans.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who was outdoored in 2017 following the death of her predecessor, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, was widely revered for her influential role in the Asante Kingdom and her dedication to preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Throughout her reign, she remained a strong pillar of support to the Asantehene and the broader traditional authority.

Lawyer defends decision to contest ‘his client’ in NDC primaries [Listen]

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, Bernard Bediako, has defended his decision to contest against his former client, Henry Boakye Yiadom, in the party primaries.

Mr. Bediako, who also serves as the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akwatia, polled 380 votes in the primaries held on Monday, August 4, 2025. He defeated close contender Erasmus Ali Korney, who secured 366 votes, and former MP and 2024 parliamentary candidate Henry Boakye Yiadom, whom he previously represented as legal counsel, with Mr. Yiadom garnering 226 votes.

His victory drew mixed reactions, largely due to his decision to contest while his former client was also in the race.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s , Mr. Bediako explained that his entry into the race was prompted by calls from the grassroots.

“I was done with my work as a legal representative and took over my political hat. The branches and some stakeholders impressed upon me to come in and change a certain narrative. That is why I contested, and the delegates believed in me,” he said.

He described Mr. Yiadom as a father figure and revealed that they continue to share a strong bond despite the primary contest. According to him, Mr. Yiadom has been instrumental in shaping his campaign strategy for the upcoming polls.

“Just after the election, he asked me to bring my strategy so we hit the ground working. He has been with me day and night for this campaign together with other bigwigs. They believe in the strategy we are using,” he added.

Mr. Bediako stressed that the Akwatia by-election is a fresh contest and should not be linked to the legal challenges that followed the 2024 parliamentary elections.

“If the court had ordered a re-run, I wouldn’t have had any chance to contest because that would have been wrong. But this is a fresh election with a new NPP candidate and a new NDC candidate,” he clarified.

Taking a swipe at his main opponent, Solomon Asumadu of the NPP, Mr. Bediako noted that unlike the NDC, whose former aspirants have rallied behind him, his rival lacks the backing of those who previously expressed interest in the NPP race.

The Akwatia by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025, following the death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Godwin Asediba says the award is a call to carry forward the spirit of journalism Godwin Asediba says the award is a call to carry forward the spirit of journalism

Ghanaian journalist Godwin Asediba has won the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award.

The investigative reporter, filmmaker and news anchor, who is the 10th recipient of the accolade, works with TV3 and 3FM in Ghana. His stories have also appeared on several international broadcasters.

The 29-year-old often focuses on human-interest stories aiming to expose injustice and amplify the voices of marginalised communities.

The award, now a decade old, was created to honour Dumor, a Ghanaian journalist and presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.

He had worked tirelessly to bring a more nuanced narrative of Africa to the world, representing a confident, savvy and entrepreneurial side.

“Komla’s legacy reminds us that African stories deserve to be told with depth, dignity and a fearless commitment to truth,” Asediba said.

Winning the award was not just a “personal milestone” for the Ghanaian but also “a call to carry forward the spirit of journalism that informs, inspires and transforms”.

The award judges said they were impressed by Asediba’s investigative work and his unwavering belief in journalistic integrity.

One story that he was particularly proud of was his investigation into one of Ghana’s largest mortuaries that had been neglected, creating a public health risk.

Asediba is now set to travel to London where he will spend three months working with BBC News teams across television, radio and online.

He will also receive training and be mentored by leading BBC journalists.

“Over the past decade, the Komla Dumor Award has helped nurture some of Africa’s most talented journalists. It’s been a privilege to watch them grow and make a lasting impact, both at the BBC and beyond,” the BBC’s regional director for Africa Juliet Njeri said.

“This 10th anniversary stands as a powerful testament to Komla Dumor’s enduring legacy: his passion for bold, authentic storytelling and championing African voices lives on.”

As part of the placement, Asediba will travel to a country in Africa to report on a story that will be broadcast to the BBC’s global audiences.

Previous award recipients are Rukia Bulle, Paa Kwesi Asare, Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya, Victoria Rubadiri, Solomon Serwanjja, Waihiga Mwaura, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira, the inaugural winner.

Africa’s growing youth a ‘ticking time bomb’ without jobs – Mahama – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Former President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned that Africa’s rapidly growing youth population could become a ticking time bomb if governments fail to create jobs at a faster pace.

Speaking during a panel discussion at a Public-Private Partnership Dialogue as part of the ongoing TICAD conference in Japan, Mahama stressed that traditional sectors like agriculture and manufacturing alone cannot absorb the millions of young people entering the job market each year.

He highlighted the creative industry, renewable energy, and digital startups as emerging sectors generating employment at a faster rate than the conventional economy, urging African governments to channel more investment into them.

“The creative sector and youth start-ups are adding jobs faster than the traditional sectors. If you take the creatives, renewable energy adds about four jobs before you can create one job in agriculture or manufacturing.

“So investing in that sector means that we can absorb more of the myriad of young people who are coming out of school. If we decide to concentrate on manufacturing and industry, Africa needs to create about 12 to 15 million jobs per year.

“You cannot create that in agriculture, manufacturing and industry alone, but the rate at which the creatives and digital space add jobs is much faster than the traditional economy.

“It is a place that we must invest as governments in order that we can absorb more of the youth,” he said.

Record Label Key For Artiste Popularity

0

Kyei Nwom

RADIO PRESENTER, Kyei Nwom, has stated that artistes need to be under a record label to help maintain their popularity and music business.

Kyei Nwom, who doubles as a musician, in an interview with Giovanni Caleb on 360, highlighted the roles record labels play in sustaining an artiste’s credibility.

“I have made many losses as a solo artiste. If you don’t have a label, you cannot do song on your own, else the evidence will be so clear on when you are on a record label and when you are not on a record label,” he disclosed.

Kyei Nwom added that “it is no big deal if your management earns a living from your talent in an attempt to support your craft.”

“Starting my music, l realised that most of the record labels have DJs scattered across the country. Where immediately their artiste releases a song, it enjoys favourable airplay. And this is because the DJs are on a payroll purposely to ensure that the songs gain popularity on air. If you leave this record label, how are you going to sort all these people out?” he said.

Kyei Nwom is making waves in the Ghanaian music scene, particularly in the Highlife genre. Kyei Nwom started his music career after participating in MTN Hitmaker season 5 in 2016. He released his debut song “Damebi”, a blend of traditional Highlife and trap sound.

He also released projects like “The SOAR EP” and “Mixed Feelings EP”, with songs like “Big Wave”, “Love and Money”, “Blood and Tears” (featuring Fameye), and “Baajo”.

Arrest Galamsey Financiers – Sefwi MCE Urges Police

0

Dominic Gyasi

The Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the Western North Region, Dominic Gyasi, has urged the police and anti-galamsey taskforces to target those who fund illegal mining operations.

According to the MCE, it is sad to note that no financier of galamsey has ever been arrested despite clear evidence that some people are financing the purchase of the various illegal mining machines.

Mr. Gyasi made this known when he led an operation to arrest some illegal miners at Abonidua and Bedii, both farming communities in the municipality.

He pointed out that the operation, which was carried out with some personnel of the Blue Water Guard, was upon a tip off.

“We were informed that some illegal miners had invaded Abonidua and Bedii, destroying farm lands and polluting water bodies,” he disclosed.

He pointed out that the illegal miners are destroying lots of cocoa farms in the Sefwi Wiawso area for their illegal activities.

“Some of the miners ran away when we stormed their sites, but we were able to arrest some of them. We also seized some machines including changfans,” he added.

Meanwhile, some of the illegal miners have accused some police and military personnel of extorting money from them anytime they visit their sites.

“They come here from time to time to take money from us. And what they do motivates us to do our work without fear.

“There are eight of the security personnel in particular, who come here constantly and say they are doing business with us,” they asserted.

Some residents in Sefwi Wiawso claimed that extorting money from illegal miners by some security personnel has become a lucrative business, thus thwarting the efforts in fighting the menace.

UTAG urges GTEC to intensify crackdown on fake degrees

0

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has expressed its strong condemnation of the growing trend of individuals acquiring and parading honorary doctorate degrees and fraudulent academic certificates, often from unaccredited and questionable institutions.

The practice, it said, was being done in a manner that undermined the integrity of Ghana’s higher education system.

“We have noted with grave concern the increasing abuse and misrepresentation of such honorary titles, particularly when used for professional advancement, public deception, and influence peddling.

“These actions not only trivialise the rigorous scholarly processes associated with legitimate academic qualifications but also erode public trust in higher education and its regulatory institutions,” a statement signed by the President of UTAG, Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu, and Secretary, Prof. Eliasu Mumuni, said.

Support

UTAG, it said, fully supported the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in its efforts to regulate, monitor, and, where necessary, sanction individuals and organisations involved in the proliferation and misuse of unearned academic titles.

“We commend your recent public statements and actions taken against such malpractices and urge you to intensify the clampdown, including legal prosecution where applicable.

“In line with our commitment to academic integrity, UTAG calls on all public institutions, civil society organisations, and the media to verify academic claims before offering platforms or recognition,” it said.

Encourage

The statement encouraged the general public to treat with skepticism any self-styled “doctorates” or “professorships” not backed by accredited academic processes or awarded purely for ceremonial purposes without a clear distinction.

UTAG further called on the Ministry of Education and GTEC to strengthen public education on the meaning, limits, and appropriate use of honorary degrees.

We also urge all universities to adopt clear internal guidelines on awarding honorary degrees and communicating their non-academic status to recipients and the public.”

Academic titles, it said, must be earned, not purchased, and their use must reflect the high standards of scholarship and service that they represent.

We remain available to collaborate with GTEC in preserving the credibility of our academic institutions and safeguarding the integrity of the knowledge society we are all working to build.

A section of the public is calling for the arrest of social media activist, Ralph Saint Williams, following his alleged assault on a nurse at the Ridge Regional Hospital in Accra on August 18, 2025.

Videos of the incident, which led to at least one nurse sustaining injuries, including the CCTV footage from the hospital, have been released.

The CCTV footage showed Ralph, a member of the #FixtheCountry Movement, taking visuals of some of the hospital’s health workers attending to patients.

At one point, the social media activist is seen confronting one of the nurses who expressed her displeasure with his actions.

He threw his hand at the nurse, which caused her to lose her balance and nearly fall on a patient sitting in a wheelchair.

He could also be seen walking off as he vigorously wagged his finger in the face of the nurse he nearly hit.

Another video, which appears to have been taken by Ralph, showed a commotion at the hospital.

Ralph and a number of people could be seen in the video fuming over perceived laxity of the staff of the hospital in attending to some accident victims who had been rushed in.

He could be seen directing the people he came with, to enter the ward where the accident victims had been taken, so that the doctors could take care of them.

He, however, kept fuming over the supposed laxity in addressing the emergency by the nurses. He could be heard threatening to harm them if something happened to the patients they (Ralph and others) brought in.

“… If anything happens to any of these guys, we are going to visit every doctor and nurse at their homes,” he warned.

Fishing vessel been dugged out by an excavator at the Elmina fishing harbour Fishing vessel been dugged out by an excavator at the Elmina fishing harbour

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has dismissed reports of fatalities in the Elmina fishing harbour incident that occurred on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Contrary to media reports suggesting that about 23 crew members were affected and that eight individuals had died, the Authority has described such claims as false and misleading.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 21, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the GMA confirmed that all 27 crew members and fishers aboard the affected vessel are alive and accounted for.

“Contrary to claims circulating in sections of the media and on social platforms, there were no fatalities. Reports alleging the loss of eight lives are entirely false. All twenty-seven (27) crew members and fishers involved are safe and have been accounted for. The caretaker of the vessel, Edward Essien, confirmed to the GMA’s Elmina Office that he and all persons on board escaped unhurt,” the statement read.

Logistics and transport key to Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy policy – Julius Debrah

However, preliminary investigations by the Authority indicate that operator error, particularly excessive speed led to a loss of control and the subsequent crash.

Despite the impact, all individuals on board managed to swim safely to shore, with only minor bruises reported.

The vessel, however, sustained significant damage and later sank during a towing operation. Fishing gear on board was also lost.

The Authority reiterated that the vessel’s caretaker, Edward Essien, confirmed to the Elmina Office that he and the remaining crew members were unharmed.

It further noted that investigations are ongoing, focusing on the cause of the collision and the operator’s license status.

“The Ghana Maritime Authority treats all marine incidents with the utmost seriousness. We encourage the public and media to seek confirmation from official sources before sharing information,” it added.

  • CCTV footage of Ralph St Williams’ heated exchanges with nurses at Ridge Hospital has been released online
  • The video shows over 20 seconds of the tense altercation between St Williams and the health workers as he sought treatment
  • After seeing the video, many Ghanaians have shared varying opinions about the encounter between the activist and the nurse

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital, also known as Ridge Hospital, has released the CCTV footage of Ralph St. Williams’ recent altercation with workers at the facility.

Ralph St. Williams, a Ghanaian political activist, has been trending online after a video of him in a heated exchange with some nurses at the Ridge Hospital. He was heard chastising the nurses, claiming they had neglected a patient he had sent to the hospital on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Moments after his video went viral, the management of Ridge Hospital denied his claims of neglect and accused him of physically assaulting some nurses.

According to the hospital’s management, the chaos created by Ralph St. Williams and a group of men accompanying him led to the injury of one nurse, who also lost her phone.

A Facebook post on the hospital’s official page on August 20 stated that the management had gifted a new mobile phone to the nurse after she lost her old one during a mob attack at the emergency unit.

Ralph St. Williams denies Ridge Hospital’s claims

However, Ralph St. Williams responded to allegations of assault, describing the nurse as a pretender.

He denied attacking the nurse, stating that the woman showed no evidence of being assaulted when he was leaving the hospital.

“This is funny and painful, where we have such a system that allows people to pretend and lie. Everyone who is sensible and smart, when they watch this video, will know the girl was pretending and acting.

“At what point did I hit you? At what point did I, Ralph, touch you? Every time people do this. We are fixing the system, and we will do everything to fix it. I am not afraid in any way. The majority of people have experienced this. They are doing this to cover their nonsense, irresponsibility, and negligence.”

Following the Democracy Hub activist’s denial, CCTV footage showing parts of the incident has emerged online.

The video, which has been recirculated on many platforms, showed Ralph St Williams looking furious and moving about frantically with his phone in his hand.

At one point, he had to be restrained by a man in yellow.

Reactions to Ralph St. Williams’ Ridge altercation

The CCTV footage has triggered mixed reactions among Ghanaians. Below are some of the comments YEN.com.gh sighted.

Odoo Pa BA said:

“Those saying he did not beat any nurse on duty, is that how a nurse or person at work should be treated? We all saw how he threw his hands at the nurse. Let’s take the political lens out.”

Prissy Ekua Adiepena Hemans said:

“So is that the part that broke the nurse’s arm? 😂😂😂😂😂 i mean the one she used to accept the 800gh and phone.”

Charles Osei Prempeh said:

“He had no right to video the patients in the first place because that was an abuse of patients’ rights. Assault can be verbal or physical. Somewhere, his action can be considered a second-degree felony.”

Eric Manteaw said:

“So the guy is still walking freely, the health service must act to prevent such things from happening again. With that touch, I just saw it’s an assault.”

GRNMA calls for Ralph St Williams’ arrest

Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has called for the arrest of Ralph St Williams.

As earlier reported by YEN.com.gh, the association issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government for the social activist’s arrest for allegedly assaulting a nurse.

Empress Gifty and Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo

Chairman for the 5th Ghana Awards–USA, Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo, has waved into the defense of gospel musician Empress Gifty following her controversial Artiste of the Year win at this year’s event.

Mr. Asamoah-Baidoo, who doubles as a regular pundit of the United on UTV, the official media partner for the awards, said there is no need to explain the modalities which led Empress Gifty to win the award.

In an Instagram post, Asamoah-Baidoo lamented that for over two years, he has been explaining the criteria to win the ultimate artiste of the year award, but many ignored his directive.

read, “I sat on TV for 2 years, 2 freaking years, explaining the modalities and dynamics of the @gmausa_ I offered directions on which portal to get all relevant information on the scheme.

“You didn’t care so you were not bothered and exhibited no form of concern. That’s ok! @empress_gifty wins and all of a sudden, you need me to explain the modalities and blah blah blah. I will not explain.”

After news broke that Empress Gifty, who doubles as host of United , has been crowned Artiste of the Year, many have chastised the awards organisers, demanding for the modalities of the awards.

Include Fish In School Feeding – Experts

Nutrition experts have called for the inclusion of aquatic foods, particularly fish, in the School Feeding Programme to improve the nutritional quality of meals served to children.

Speaking at the launch of the Aquatic Foods in School Meal Project, Dr. Jolene Nyarko, a nutrition specialist and team member at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research–Food Research Institute (CSIR-FRI), stressed that introducing fish into school menus would not only enhance children’s health but also support the livelihoods of those in the fish value chain.

“Fish is a rich source of protein, calcium, iron, zinc, iodine, and vitamins such as D and B12, which are essential for growth, immune function, and overall health,” she said.

“Given the evidence of stunting, thinness, and malnutrition among school-age children, it has become urgent to diversify school meals with aquatic foods,” she added.

Dr. Nyarko noted that the School Feeding Programme, established 20 years ago and now reaching over 4 million children across 12,000 schools, had made progress in increasing access to meals but often fell short on dietary diversity.

According to the nutritionist, a recent CSIR study in the Volta Region among 650 children found that 50 percent were stunted, 19 percent were underweight, and 7 percent overweight, pointing out that this underscores the scale of nutritional challenges.

The project, funded by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations and implemented in partnership with CSIR, the Fisheries Commission, Ghana Education Service, and the Ghana School Feeding Programme, will initially be piloted in Ekumfi in the Central Region and Kpone in Greater Accra.

Both districts are known for fishing and farming activities, making them ideal test sites.

Deputy Director of CSIR-FRI, Dr. Gregory A. Komlaga, underlined the importance of incorporating fish into school diets.

“At this crucial stage of their development, children need adequate nutrition to reach their full potential. Including fish in the School Feeding Programme will make a significant difference,” he said.

He added that the Food Research Institute’s mandate was to provide evidence-based advice to government on food policy, and that the integration of fish products into school meals represented a practical step towards tackling malnutrition.

The workshop that launched the initiative brought together key stakeholders including the Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Fisheries, fishmongers’ associations, and international partners.

The project aims to establish a sustainable framework for diversifying school menus, boosting child nutrition, and creating market opportunities for fish processors and traders.

COCOBOD’s spin fails to tackle real issues – Fiifi Boafo rebuts

0

Fiifi Boafo is the former Head of Public Relations Unit at COCOBOD Fiifi Boafo is the former Head of Public Relations Unit at COCOBOD

Former Head of Public Relations Unit at COCOBOD, Fiifi Boafo, has stated that the institution’s attempt to douse growing concerns about its ongoing management shake-up has only fueled further criticism.

According to him, the recent statement issued by his former office “does little to address the real issues at stake.”

In a sharp rebuttal to a statement released by COCOBOD on August 20, 2025, Boafo argued that the current administration’s decision only burdens the board with needless costs by sidelining experienced public servants who have served the institution for many years.

COCOBOD responds to Fiifi Boafo’s claim as ‘false and misleading’

He noted that several directors with decades of technical and managerial expertise have been stripped of their substantive roles and reassigned to positions that do not even exist in COCOBOD’s official organogram.

Industry insiders warn this has weakened key departments while fueling perceptions of politically motivated purges.

“What makes the shake-up even more troubling, they say, is its timing: cocoa farmers across the country continue to struggle with delayed payments, smuggling threats, and dwindling support services.

“Rather than reassuring cocoa farmers and stakeholders with solutions to these pressing problems, COCOBOD’s response is seen as an exercise in window-dressing.

“Cocoa farmers are not interested in PR spins; they want leadership that protects their livelihoods. COCOBOD cannot wish away the erosion of experienced management with political explanations,” Fiifi Boafo said.

‘You’re not part of NPP’s amnesty’ – Miracles Aboagye fires Adorye, Solomon Owusu

The growing backlash has raised uncomfortable questions about whether the current leadership is prioritising political expediency over stability in Ghana’s most critical export sector.

COCOBOD’s latest statement, instead of restoring confidence, has only deepened mistrust, shifting attention from promises of competence to a reality of uncertainty.

‘You’re not part of NPP’s amnesty’ – Miracles Aboagye fires Adorye, Solomon Owusu

Miracles Aboagye (M) says nobody wants Hopeson Adorye (R) and Solomon Owusu (L) in the NPP Miracles Aboagye (M) says nobody wants Hopeson Adorye (R) and Solomon Owusu (L) in the NPP

The 2024 Communications Director of Dr Bawumia’s Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has taken a dig at Solomon Owusu, Hopeson Adorye, and some former members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who have stated that they will not return to the party despite the amnesty granted by the party’s leadership.

Speaking in an interview with Starr FM, Miracles Aboagye said that Solomon Owusu and Hopeson Adorye, who are now leading members of the Movement for Change, are not welcome to rejoin the NPP.

Movement for Change shuts down NPP comeback claims

He described them as bad apples whose return to the party might even make things worse for them.

“Nobody is asking Hopeson Adorye to come back to the NPP. He is not part of the NPP, he is not part of those given the amnesty… In fact, the NPP does not expect Hopeson Adorye to come back.

“We would want people who will bring positive energy to return. If you have an organisation like Starr FM and one of your staff members who leaves keeps bad-mouthing you, would you want such a staff member back? You would want a team that is pursuing a common agenda. I don’t think there is anybody in the NPP that would say that we want Hopeson back.

“No politician would want negative energy. Do you know what one negative person can do? One negative energy can disrupt thousands,” he said.

NPP grants amnesty to all suspended members

The NPP communication officer also clarified that Hopeson Adorye and other persons who left the party of their own accord must apply to become members again.

He added that not every person who applies to be a member of the NPP again might even be received back into the party.

“They are not part of the amnesty; they have to apply. So, they should even pray that when they apply and the application is vetted, they will be accepted. Because your acceptance will be based on the contribution you are bringing on board,” he said.

Ghanaian entrepreneurs seek further opportunities in Turkey at biggest industry forum

0

More Ghanaian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are seeking further opportunities from Turkey as Ghana and Turkey deepens their relationship.

The move forms part of initiatives to diversify markets across the globe to minimise geopolitical risks.

As part of initiatives to enhance the move, Access Bank Ghana and Litina Travel supported about 30 entrepreneurs to attend this year’s World Corporation of Industries Business Forum and Tourism in Turkey.

The two days forum witnessed an enhanced platform for bilateral conversations, groundbreaking negotiations and business agreements which are expected to commence implementation by the close of the year.

Some of the participants who spoke to Joy Business disclosed plans to move forward some discussions that couldn’t be concluded within the two-day period of the main event.

David Okrang, Chief Executive Officre, Jodakon Consult who is part of the beneficiaries recounted a successful engagements and hope for more of such platforms to support Ghanaian entrepreneurs.

“We had a great event so far and I can say my expectations are being met since the first day of the event. However, I have engaged a potential business partner in a conversation which I intend to follow up from next week after the event. This is because we have some key areas of interest and need a common understanding before commencing the partnership”.

“We believe the continuation will help to cement the relation and open more doors for my business as I intend to supply more and do more business here in Turkey”, he added.

Ambrose Tsegah, who also benefited from the initiative, however, told Joy Business that agricultural machinery must be priorities for the next event due to the availability of vast opportunities in the sector.

He believes agro processing is an essential part of both economies, hence such platforms must give more opportunity to players in the agricultural sector.

Executive Chairman of the WCI Forum, Abdulkadir Develi, also said the event comes at a time of global uncertainty, where trust is more important than ever in trade.

He added that economic security is critical for countries to overcome challenges and that trade diplomacy has become increasingly significant in this geopolitical landscape.

Win over Kotoko a big motivation – Frimpong Manso

0

Bibiani GoldStars head coach Frimpong Manso has described his side’s victory over Asante Kotoko in the GHALCA Top 4 as a major source of motivation for his players.

Speaking after the game, Manso admitted that facing a club of Kotoko’s stature in their opening match came with pressure, but praised his players for rising to the challenge.

“It’s been good for us in terms of motivation because our players will be motivated by them in this tournament. Playing your first game against a team like Kotoko, I think that alone puts pressure on us,” Manso said.

“But once they have been able to deal with it, I think going forward, they will do well in the next games. For me, it’s not about the win — I want to see my players in a big occasion like this, how they will play — and I think they did just that, although we still have a lot of mistakes to correct,” he added.

The victory gives GoldStars a positive start in the competition as they aim to build confidence and sharpen their squad ahead of their CAF Champions League prelims.

A Timeless Icon with Fresh Summer Flair

0

The denim skirt has long been a staple of effortless style—versatile, durable, and endlessly wearable. From its heyday in the ’70s to the Y2K resurgence and now today’s fashion-forward takes, it remains a go-to piece that bridges casual cool with understated elegance. While it’s particularly beloved in summer, each season brings new ways to refresh and elevate this classic item.

As stylist Mia Caldwell puts it, “A denim skirt is like a blank canvas—you can paint it however you want. The key is to experiment without losing the easy vibe that makes it special.”

1. Romance Meets Utility: Statement Blouses

This season, contrast the rugged charm of denim with feminine flair. Pair your skirt with a romantic statement blouse—think puffed sleeves, delicate lace, or vintage floral prints. This combination adds soft sophistication without sacrificing comfort, making it ideal for weekend brunches, garden strolls, or daytime get-togethers.

2. Denim on Denim Done Right

Yes, double denim is back—and done right, it’s ultra-modern. Choose a denim jacket or shirt in either a matching or contrasting wash. To avoid overwhelming the look, stick to clean lines and let the denim duo do the talking. Minimalist jewelry and neutral-toned bags complete the outfit with polish.

3. Off-Duty Athleisure Appeal

For a sporty edge, match a high-waisted denim skirt with a cropped tank top and crisp white sneakers. Accessorize with a baseball cap and a practical canvas tote for a look that’s both on-trend and functional. This outfit is perfect for errand runs, laid-back weekends, or travel days.

4. Nighttime Glam with Satin & Straps

Want to dress it up? Opt for a satin cami tucked into a fitted denim skirt. Add strappy heels, bold earrings, and a sleek clutch. The subtle sheen of satin contrasts beautifully with the texture of denim, creating a look that’s chic enough for rooftop cocktails or date night.

5. Light Layers, Bold Statements

Layering in warm weather isn’t off-limits—it’s all about the right materials. A sheer duster or lightweight kimono adds flow and visual interest. Choose bold patterns or vibrant hues to pop against the simplicity of the skirt, creating a boho-chic finish that works from day to dusk.

Style it Your Way

The enduring appeal of the denim skirt lies in its adaptability. Whether you prefer minimalist monochrome or eye-catching pairings, there’s a version of this wardrobe essential that fits your aesthetic. Don’t be afraid to mix eras, textures, or unexpected accessories. After all, fashion is about expressing your own rhythm.

Govt Pays GH¢9.7bn Under Debt Exchange

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

Government has announced the payment of GH¢9,698,815,220.17 under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), bringing total disbursements for 2025 to GH¢19.4 billion.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on Thursday, 19 August 2025, the payment was described as a demonstration of government’s unwavering commitment to honour the terms outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed under the exchange programme, aimed at strengthening investor confidence and supporting fiscal credibility.

“The total amount paid for this obligation stands at GH¢9,698,815,220.17. With this payment, total disbursement under the DDEP in 2025 alone now stands at GH¢19.4 billion,” the statement said.

It further explained that, in line with the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, government has established two dedicated sinking fund accounts, a cedi sinking fund account and a US dollar sinking fund account, as mandated by the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), as amended.

According to the ministry, these funds will provide liquidity buffers to ensure the timely redemption of loan obligations, including bonds maturing in 2026, 2027, and 2028.

Government also assured investors and the public that subsequent debt obligations, including those under the DDEP, would be honoured fully and on time.

Ghana: 6 Banks Face Capital Compliance Challenges – Fitch Solutions

0

Fitch Ratings has projected that six banks operating in Ghana are unlikely to achieve capital compliance through internal capital generation alone.

To this end, it said the affected banks would need to seek capital injections, merge with or be acquired by better-capitalised banks, or be granted extended forbearance to allow time to retain sufficient earnings to comply.

It pointed out that two of the banks that remain undercapitalised were government-owned and have already received capital injections.

“The vast majority of Ghanaian banks are on track to be capital-compliant once regulatory forbearance relating to the treatment of Ghana’s domestic default expires at the end of 2025,” the report said.

Related Articles

According to Fitch Ratings, this was due to strong profits, low risk-weighted asset growth and, in some cases, capital injections.

“Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which was launched in December 2022 and concluded in 2023, imposed large losses on the banking sector and had a significant impact on banks’ capitalisation given their high exposure to sovereign fixed-income securities. In response, the Bank of Ghana eliminated the capital conservation buffer of 3 per cent, which reduced the minimum total capital adequacy ratio requirement to 10 per cent from 13 per cent”, the UK-based firm said.

“It also allowed banks to phase in losses relating to cedi government bonds into their regulatory capital evenly over four years, starting from end-2022. Cedi-denominated government bonds accounted for the bulk of the debt subject to the DDEP,” it added.
