Simons signs and £50m deal done for Man Utd star

We are nearly into the final week of the summer transfer window, but seven days is a long time when it comes to Chelsea. The Blues are still pursuing a number of players before the deadline expires at 7pm on Monday, September 1, and they are also hoping to push axed stars out the door.

Expect there to be plenty of news coming out of Stamford Bridge right up until the final moments of the window.

Express Sport looks at what would signify a perfect final week for Maresca and co…

Simons finally signs

For weeks now, Xavi Simons signing for Chelsea has appeared inevitable. The RB Leipzig midfielder has reportedly agreed on personal terms with the Premier League club and has his heart set on a move to Stamford Bridge, turning down a potential transfer to Bayern Munich.

However, he remains a Bundesliga player, and the Blues have yet to make the official £60million bid that Leipzig chiefs are said to want to agree to a sale. Chelsea bosses can appease fans and Maresca by sanctioning a deal early next week and avoiding any deadline-day drama.

Sell Nkunku and Sterling

What could accelerate deals for Simons and Garnacho is Chelsea finally getting some dead wood out the door. Both Christopher Nkunku and Raheem Sterling remain at the club despite speculation of moves to numerous clubs, and Chelsea must now sell both promptly, even if it means cut-price deals.

Nicolas Jackson and Ben Chilwell are other axed stars who could raise further funds. These four departures would not only free up more transfer money for Maresca but also allow the club to get some high-earning, yet potentially non-active, players off the books.

Semenyo wants jail and life bans as racist abuse punishments

0

Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo says more should be done to tackle racism in football, including possible prison sentences for those convicted of abuse.

Semenyo reported that he was racially abused by a spectator during his side’s 4-2 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The match was briefly paused while referee Anthony Taylor explained the allegations to both teams’ managers and captains.

Speaking to ITV News,, external the 25-year-old said “there has to be something else” that authorities can do.

Merseyside police arrested a 47-year-old man from Liverpool on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He appeared in court and is now barred from every football stadium in the UK as part of his bail conditions.

When asked what a maximum punishment should be for anyone convicted of racial abuse, Semenyo said: “It could be jail time, it could be banned from stadiums for a lifetime, it could be anything along the lines of that, but I feel like there has to be something else.”

Semenyo scored twice during the second half against Liverpool, after reporting his concerns to the referee.

He said footballers cannot understand why incidents of racism in stadiums have been so widespread, adding that they “want to know why it keeps happening”.

The Ghana international also said he was racially abused online immediately after the match at Anfield.

“Someone has felt the need to come online and do that, so that made me angry, to be honest. Why would you want to do that?” he said.

When asked if he thought the publicity around the incident would deter other supporters from making racist remarks, he said: “I hope it does, but if it doesn’t then it just shows that what the Premier League is doing is not enough and that more needs to be done. So I hope it does.”

A day after Semenyo reported the alleged abuse at Anfield, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters told BBC Sport the authorities would keep pushing to banish racism from the game.

Masters said: “If you are found to be using discriminatory language inside a football ground you will be ejected, second you will be banned and third you may face criminal charges.

“No Premier League footballer should ever have to, in their workplace or online, suffer that sort of abuse. It is important that we keep saying that.”

South African rand hits nine-month high, as Fed remarks knock dollar

The South African rand strengthened on Friday, boosted by a weaker dollar and a rebound in gold prices, after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell pointed to a possible rate cut at the central bank’s September meeting.

The rand was range-bound for much of the week, even after Africa’s most industrialised economy recorded the highest consumer inflation print (ZACPIY=ECI), opens new tab since 10 months ago on Wednesday, as analysts said the Fed’s remarks at its Jackson Hole symposium would be the main catalyst to drive the currency.

At 1556 GMT, the rand traded at 17.4525 against the dollar, about 1.5% firmer than Thursday’s close and at its strongest level since early November 2024.

“The weak dollar is due to comments made by Powell where he said that it may be time to adjust policy.

The market is seeing it as very dovish,” said Roy Topol, portfolio manager at Cratos Asset Management.

The dollar last traded about 0.8% weaker against a basket of currencies, while gold prices rebounded, further boosting the appeal of major gold producer South Africa’s currency.

Like other risk-sensitive currencies, the rand often takes cues from global drivers such as U.S. policy and economic data.

“Whether the U.S. rate cuts start in September, it doesn’t really matter, but between roughly now and this time next year, I expect 100 to 125 basis points of rate cuts,” said Johann Els, chief economist at Old Mutual.

Domestic investor focus next week will be on South Africa’s business cycle leading indicator (ZALEAD=ECI), opens new tab, producer inflation (ZAPPIY=ECI), opens new tab numbers, money supply (ZAM3=ECI), opens new tab and private sector credit (ZACRED=ECI), opens new tab data, and trade balance (ZATBAL=ECI), opens new tab and budget balance (ZABUD=ECI), opens new tab figures.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s Top-40 (.JTOPI), opens new tab index closed up about 1%.

South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond also firmed as the yield fell 7 basis points to 9.57%.

Ghana Prisons Service Confirms Nana Agradaa Not On President Mahama’s Amnesty List

News Hub Creator21h

The Ghana Prisons Service has officially dismissed circulating reports claiming that Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, formerly known as Nana Agradaa, would be included in President John Dramani Mahama’s recent amnesty list.

Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Abdul Latif clarified that the amnesty list had been compiled and submitted to the President before Evangelist Asiamah was imprisoned. He stressed that her case does not meet any of the established criteria for inclusion in the presidential amnesty, meaning she will continue to serve her sentence as mandated by the courts.

Nana Agradaa, who gained widespread attention for her controversial activities in the religious space, has faced legal proceedings that resulted in her incarceration. The recent reports of her potential release sparked discussions on social media and among the public, prompting the Prisons Service to issue a formal statement to set the record straight.

CSP Latif’s clarification underscores the integrity of the amnesty process and reassures the public that only eligible prisoners who meet specific criteria will benefit. Evangelist Asiamah’s continued detention highlights that the legal system and presidential amnesty procedures remain independent and strictly regulated, ensuring justice is upheld.

Watch how PAC Chair Abena Osei-Asare chided MoE accountant during hearing

0

Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare

The Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare, on August 22, 2025, reprimanded the District Accountant of the Ministry of Education in Donkokrom for unlawfully withholding the entire salary of a teacher.

The incident occurred during a PAC sitting probing financial infractions within the Education Ministry.

It was revealed that the accountant had instructed a bank to place a total embargo on the teacher’s salary, forwarding 100% of his earnings to the Ministry over alleged irregularities in his appointment.

When questioned, the accountant admitted to the action, claiming that it was based on an understanding with the teacher, who had suggested the embargo as a repayment method.

This admission, however, infuriated the PAC Chair.

“On what authority, on whose authority, where is the law that gave you the mandate to place an embargo on a person’s whole salary?” Abena Osei-Asare demanded.

“But do you know what you are doing is illegal?” she pressed further.

The accountant responded, “Yes.”

Abena Osei Asare, who is also the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, retorted, “Stop right there. It is illegal, and you said yes.”

She emphasised that the accountant’s action contravened Ghana’s financial regulations, which stipulate that not more than 40% of a person’s salary can be withheld under such circumstances.

LIVESTREAMED: Public Accounts Committee sitting for August 20

“It is illegal to take away 100% of someone’s salary. The maximum is 40%. So, if you tell us you want to find a solution to a problem that the person did not even create, then you are equally committing an illegality,” she stressed.

The Committee further discovered that the teacher in question, who also served as head of the school, had validated his own promotion from his previous role to that of Assistant Registrar Technical Investigator, a clear breach of procedure.

Despite acknowledging the teacher’s wrongdoing, the PAC Chair cautioned that the accountant’s actions could not be justified.

“The fact that he has committed this doesn’t mean you should also do the same. We cannot sit and watch you perpetuate an illegality just because the teacher also erred,” she stated.

A member of the Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye, has hit back at the Director of Communications for the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, over comments he made about him.

Miracles Aboagye had stated that nobody in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was interested in having Hopeson Adorye back, even after the party granted amnesty to all suspended members.

“I don’t think there is anybody in the NPP right now who would say we want Hopeson Adorye back… we want positive numbers only,” Miracles Aboagye said in an earlier interview.

Responding in a self-recorded video, Hopeson Adorye, who also served as a former Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Airports, dismissed the remarks, stressing that party leaders had been calling on him to return to the NPP.

According to him, Miracles Aboagye holds no authority to decide on such matters.

In a sharp rebuttal, Adorye said, “You see, if not for wee toffee that Miracles Aboagye has taken, he would never talk like this. Who knew him? Where was Miracles Aboagye when we were suffering for the party?

From cocoa farm to political leadership: Dr Adutwum details humble beginnings

0

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has shared a deeply personal narrative of his family’s pioneering role in Ghana’s cocoa industry, drawing a direct line from his humble beginnings on a cocoa farm to his political ambitions.

In an interview with Aisha Ibrahim on JoyNews’ Personal Profile, Dr. Adutwum, a former Minister of Education and incumbent MP for Bosomtwe, recounted a story of “adventurous, uneducated individuals” who, driven by opportunity, transformed Ghana’s landscape and economy.

The aspiring presidential candidate highlighted the generational journey of his family, which saw his uncle, acting almost as an apprentice, venturing into new territories in search of fertile land for cocoa cultivation.

When resources in that area were exhausted, their generation moved to the Central Region, settling in towns like Dunkwa, before continuing their expansion into the Western Region.

Dr. Adutwum’s story sheds light on the historical migration patterns of cocoa farmers, who were instrumental in establishing Ghana as a global cocoa powerhouse.

These pioneers, often uneducated but highly ambitious, moved from the Eastern and Central regions—the historical heartlands of cocoa farming—to newer frontiers in the Western and Ashanti regions. This movement, driven by the search for untouched virgin forests, fueled the industry’s growth in the early to mid-20th century.

The locations mentioned by Dr. Adutwum—Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region, and Wasa Akropong and the Huni Valley-Tarkwa area in the Western Region—are historically and currently significant cocoa-growing hubs.

The Western and Western North Regions today account for a large portion of Ghana’s cocoa production.

The narrative of his family’s journey reflects a broader historical trend where these areas, once dense forests, were cleared by a new wave of migrant farmers, transforming them into Ghana’s economic backbone.

Dr. Adutwum’s account resonates with the Ghanaian identity, where cocoa is not just a commodity but a core part of the nation’s heritage and a source of livelihood for hundreds of thousands of families.

His personal story underscores a message of perseverance, foresight, and hard work—qualities he suggests are essential for national leadership.

By highlighting his family’s roots in the cocoa industry, Dr. Adutwum aims to connect with the electorate on a fundamental level, framing his journey as a microcosm of the Ghanaian spirit of enterprise and resilience.

‘Enough of your death prophecies, my office isn’t for receiving prophecies’ – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Presidential Envoy for Inter-Faith and Ecumenical Relations Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Presidential Envoy for Inter-Faith and Ecumenical Relations

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Presidential Envoy for Inter-Faith and Ecumenical Relations, has called on Ghanaian spiritual leaders to cease prophecies centred on death and doom and instead speak about issues that would transform the nation.

Afriyie Ankrah, who recently directed all prophets to submit their prophecies regarding high-profile government officials and the state to his office for scrutiny, clarified that death prophecies are no longer welcome.

He stressed that the focus should now be on positive prophecies that inspire development and national progress.

’70 to 80% of prophecies my office has received lack substance’ – Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah

According to him, almost every submission to his office revolves around death, doom or disaster, and he has had enough.

Speaking in an interview, excerpts of which were shared on social media by GHOne News, he said, “I’m praying for the day our prophets and seers will have visions of a Ghana that is transformed and prosperous.

“If you have any prophecy about Ghana becoming like Malaysia, Singapore, or South Korea, then come see me.

“Enough of your death prophecies. My office isn’t for receiving prophecies.”

He urged prophets to focus on revelations that inspire growth, innovation and national progress rather than those that instill fear and panic among citizens.

Kaizer Chiefs eye Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara

Kaizer Chiefs set eyes on Kotoko goalkeeper Kaizer Chiefs set eyes on Kotoko goalkeeper

South African football heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly set their sights on Asante Kotoko’s standout goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara.

The 25-year-old Guinean international has been a pivotal figure for the Ghanaian side since joining last season.

Camara played a crucial role as Kotoko lifted the 2024/25 FA Cup and continued his fine form by starring in the Porcupine Warriors’ victory over Chiefs in the 2025 Toyota Cup.

Despite already having four goalkeepers in their ranks—Brandon Peterson, Bruce Bvuma, Fiacre Ntwari and Karabo Molefe—Chiefs are said to be keen on securing Camara’s services.

Sources suggest that preliminary talks could soon be held with Kotoko regarding a potential transfer, although Camara’s current contract runs until June 2026.

It remains uncertain whether the highly-rated goalkeeper will make the move to the South African side, especially with Kotoko set to compete in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.

No free speech under Rawlings – Adutwum reveals harsh political truth

0

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, has reflected on his time as a university student during the Jerry John Rawlings military regime, describing it as a key period of gagging without tolerance for opposing views.

In a recent interview with Aisha Ibrahim on JoyNews’ Personality Profile, the former Minister of Education under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration recounted the “culture of silence” that permeated the country, where citizens feared expressing opinions against former President Rawlings.

Dr. Adutwum, the MP for Bosomtwe, recalled events that defined the period from 1981 to 1992, when the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) governed by military decree.

During this time, the fear of reprisal left many Ghanaians hesitant to voice opinions against the government.

“People could not talk because you may be picked up the next day,” he stated.

In this climate, he explained, university students emerged as a vocal and influential opposition force.

At the time, Ghana had only three universities: the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, and the University of Science and Technology (UST), now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Students from these institutions, organised under the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), led nationwide demonstrations.

Dr. Adutwum clarified that these protests were not over student welfare but a principled stand against the PNDC’s rule, agitating for a return to civilian government.

He recounted a pivotal moment when the government restructured university administration and introduced student loans, effectively ending the era of fully-funded tertiary education.

Prior to this, students received free meals and housing, with two students per room. The move to a loan system sparked a major nationwide protest, leading to the shutdown of all universities.

Dr. Adutwum shared a memorable anecdote from the protest at UST.

He recalled how the then-student representative council (SRC) president was persuaded by his father to apologise to Rawlings through the Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware.

This apology, intended to allow students to return to school, was seen as a betrayal by the student body. In a powerful display of internal accountability, the students successfully impeached their leader for apologising, underscoring their unwavering commitment to the cause.

He concluded that these experiences—organising protests, boycotting classes, and holding their own leaders accountable—served as an invaluable “leadership training ground” that shaped his political convictions and those of his contemporaries.

The spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s 2026 presidential primaries campaign team, Kwasi Kwarteng, has responded to the latest survey conducted by Global Info Analytics.

The latest survey released by Global Info Analytics on August 21, 2025, placed Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of all the other aspirants and placed Kennedy Agyapong in second position.

Giving a reaction to the survey on JoyNews on Friday, August 22, 2025, Kwasi Kwarteng indicated that, though he has reservations about the time frame the survey was conducted, the camp was not worried about it.

“If you look at the findings that are put out there, this work was done within the space of eight days, where people will even have concerns about the narrow time,” he stated.

Despite his concerns about the time frame, he indicated that the survey’s findings presented a good opportunity for his camp to reflect and improve as they prepare to go to the polls.

He said, “This is research work, and the findings put out by Mr Danquah is an opportunity and feedback just to improve the work that we are doing; we don’t want to be antagonistic.”

“For us in team Ken, we will take it as very good feedback; it is an invitation for us to improve on the things that we are doing,” he stressed.

The survey indicated that there will be a repeat of what happened at the last presidential primaries in 2023, where Kennedy Agyapong came second to then Vice President, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr Bawumia opens commanding lead in NPP race with 52% support – Poll

Though Dr Bawumia garnered 61.43% in 2023, the current survey placed him first with 52% support among NPP delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primary in January 2026.

According to the survey, Kennedy Agyapong will come second with 17% while Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko and Addai Nimo each recorded less than 1%.

The poll predicted that Dr Bryan Acheampong would secure a paltry 3% of the total votes.

Car dealer in court over stolen car from Canada Car dealer in court over stolen car from Canada

A popular car dealer, Dennis Osei Adu Gyamfi, also known as Nana Kwame, has been dragged to court for allegedly receiving a stolen vehicle, contrary to Section 146 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The Accra-based dealer is accused of dishonestly receiving a Mercedes Benz E350, with chassis number WDDZF8EB4LA725362, valued at GH¢700,000.

According to the prosecution, Gyamfi knew the car had been stolen in Canada and shipped to Ghana, but went ahead to sell it to an unsuspecting buyer.

Police arrest three over illegal possession, manufacturing of guns

Investigations revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Canada on April 27, 2023. The accused allegedly imported it into Ghana in June 2023, three months later. He then handed the car over to his associate, Joseph Mensah, in Kumasi for sale.

On July 13, 2023, the vehicle was sold to John Anapana for GH¢560,000, who later resold it to Abraham Sackey. After using it for five months, Sackey also sold the vehicle to another dealer, Ernest Owusu.

Eventually, a businessman from Benin, Derrick Fredrick Senan Togban, who resides in Accra, purchased the vehicle through a swap deal involving his Mercedes Benz E300 valued at GH¢300,000, plus an additional GH¢400,000 in cash, bringing the total value to GH¢700,000.

Togban registered the car in his name with the number plate GR 8760-2025. However, his plans to drive it to his hometown in Benin turned sour when he was arrested by Interpol in Togo.

The vehicle was subsequently confiscated after Togban was informed that it had been stolen from Canada.

Further investigations by Ghanaian authorities led to the arrest of Gyamfi and three other individuals.

During interrogation, Gyamfi reportedly admitted that his name appeared on the importation documents but denied any knowledge of importing a stolen vehicle.

He has since been formally charged with dishonestly receiving stolen property. When he appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Susana Eduful, he pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢1 million. He is expected to reappear on September 23, 2025.

Minister tasks engineering council to uphold high professional standards

The Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has charged the newly inaugurated Technical Committees of the Engineering Council to uphold the highest standards of quality, safety and integrity in engineering practice across the country.

Speaking on his behalf at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, the Ministry’s Director of Human Resource Management and Development, Ebenezer Sam, highlighted the strategic importance of the committees, stressing that their work is central to protecting public safety and maximizing returns on infrastructure investments, in line with the Engineering Council Act 819.

The minister cautioned that government expects the Council to clamp down on the use of substandard materials, the activities of unlicensed practitioners and firms, as well as poor supervision of engineering works.

“The proliferation of engineering failures, from building collapses to water system breakdowns, is a stain on Ghana’s development effort. It erodes public trust and wastes scarce resources,” he stated.

Adjei further urged the committees to collaborate closely with the Council’s Board and other stakeholders in the Built Environment sector to address persistent challenges confronting the profession.

On his part, the Registrar of the Council, Ing Isaac Bedu, described the inauguration of the Technical Committees as a major operational milestone, noting that the move will enhance the Council’s ability to effectively deliver on its regulatory mandate.

Gambian man sentenced to more than 67 years after US conviction for torture

A Colorado jury convicted Michael for his participation in the torture of numerous victims A Colorado jury convicted Michael for his participation in the torture of numerous victims

A Gambian man who was part of an armed unit run by former dictator Yahya Jammeh and was convicted of torture by a U S jury in April has been sentenced to more than 67 years in prison, the U S Justice Department, opens new tab said on Friday.

A Colorado jury convicted the Gambian national, Michael Sang Correa, for his participation in the torture of numerous victims in Gambia in 2006, including beating and flesh burning, because of the victims’ purported involvement in a coup plot against the then-president, the Justice Department said.

Correa, 46, was sentenced to 810 months in prison by Senior Judge Christine Arguello for the District of Colorado after conviction on one count of conspiracy to commit torture and five counts of torture, the department said in a statement.

The case marked the first criminal prosecution over involvement in the feared armed group known as “the Junglers”, which operated in Gambia’s police state during Jammeh’s rule.

The former president seized power in 1994 and foiled several attempts to overthrow him before he lost a 2016 election.

Correa was arrested in 2020 under a law which makes it a crime for anyone in the U.S. to commit torture abroad.

Jammeh denied torture during his rule.

The Junglers were a secretive offshoot of the Gambian army that took orders from Jammeh. Rights groups and former victims say they carried out brutalities that worsened after a failed coup in 2006.

Suspected coup plotters and other outspoken opponents of Jammeh were taken to the National Intelligence Agency near one of the capital Banjul’s white sand beaches, according to victims.

Some found themselves in a torture chamber where they were subjected to electric shocks, beatings and burning with acid, they said.

An aspiring National Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Yeboah, also known as Nana Kay, has suggested that the Electoral Commission (EC) should not waste time and resources conducting the Tamale Central by-election.

The young politician, who is also a member of the NPP’s communication team and election directorate, argued that it makes neither financial nor political sense to hold an election where only one candidate is contesting.

According to him, the NPP has officially withdrawn from the race in honor of the late Dr Murtala Mohammed, who was among the seven people who died in the helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Kay said so far, only the NDC has expressed interest in the contest, with no other party or independent candidate showing interest.

He believes it would be more prudent for the EC to declare the NDC’s candidate as MP-elect instead of spending resources on a by-election with just one contestant.

Nana Kay further proposed the introduction of a law to make it mandatory for the EC to declare a sole candidate winner in situations where there is no opponent.

“With the Tamale Central by-election, the main contender, the NPP, has withdrawn from the race.

“I have not heard that any other party or independent candidate has expressed interest, and so I find no wisdom or financial sense in why the EC should waste resources organizing an election with just one candidate competing.

“If we have to review the law to make it mandatory for the EC to use this approach and declare the sole candidate the winner, then we must do it. That is my opinion,” he stated.

Kojo Cue advises artistes to treat music like any other profession

Kojo Cue has stated that music should be treated as any other profession and not just a side hustle.

The Ghanaian rapper believes that musicians who take their craft seriously gain more than just a music catalogue; they acquire skills that can fuel success in any industry.

“In music, every minute counts. The time and effort invested in creating, performing, and understanding the industry is never wasted. Every hour invested in the craft is value-added,” he told Graphic Showbiz.

Explaining his perspective, he added, “the grind of the industry—the creation, the performance, the hustle—is an investment in oneself.”

For him, the benefits extend far beyond the stage. “The skills honed through music, such as discipline, creativity and teamwork, are applicable beyond the stage and can benefit other areas of your life. Also, if you know how to leverage your music experience, it can serve as strong credentials on your CV and open new opportunities,” he said.

Kojo Cue, born Linford Kennedy Amankwaa, put this philosophy into practice during his two-year break from active performance.

Instead of disappearing from the industry, he pivoted to work with a music marketing company, where he both contributed to and learned from the business side of the craft.

“Staying connected with the music marketing community helped me offer my expertise to others and build relationships, which is essential for maintaining connections in the industry. It allowed me to do what I love without being constantly in the limelight. I also used the period to rest, reflect and regain my creative energy,” he explained.

That strategic choice paid off. When he returned in March this year with Abebrese, the comeback track signaled not just his readiness but his evolution as an artiste.

Since then, he has maintained momentum, rolling out fresh music and reaffirming his spot in Ghana’s rap scene. His latest single, Onnipa Hia Mmoa, features fellow artiste Ayisi, underscoring his determination to merge creativity with purposeful growth.

Ralph Williams slapped with GH¢7m defamation suit by Ridge Hospital nurse

Ralph Williams (L) and Rejoice Tsotso Bortei Ralph Williams (L) and Rejoice Tsotso Bortei

Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a nurse at Ridge Hospital, has filed a GH¢7 million lawsuit against Ralph Saint Williams for allegedly assaulting her during a violent incident on August 17, 2025.

She has sued Ralph Saint Williams, accusing him of alleged physical assault and defamation.

According to a Writ of Summons filed at the High Court in Accra on August 20, 2025 and sighted by Citi News on August 22, Bortei is seeking GH¢2 million for defamation.

The statement of claim alleges that Williams physically assaulted Bortei, causing injuries including a dislocated shoulder and a hand injury, which have affected her professional duties.

In addition, the plaintiff claims Williams made defamatory statements publicly, calling her a “liar” and accusing her of fabricating her injuries.

“Liar, wo se wo nsam abu. Duabɔ bebam. You say you have suffered an injured hand and a dislocated shoulder. This is cooked up to cover the nonsense going on at the hospital.”

Lawyers for the nurse indicated that the statements made by Ralph Saint Williams have damaged her reputation, subjected her to public ridicule, and undermined her credibility as a nurse.

The nurse is seeking a public apology and retraction of the defamatory statements in the same medium and with equal prominence.

A perpetual injunction preventing Williams from making further defamatory remarks.

A 50-meter restraining order against Williams. Legal costs and any other reliefs deemed appropriate by the court.

The defendant has been ordered to enter an appearance within eight days of service or face a default judgment.

Low sales despite Cedi appreciation

The traders are lamenting low patronage in their daily dealings since the Cedi began to appreciate The traders are lamenting low patronage in their daily dealings since the Cedi began to appreciate

Some traders, especially shop owners in the Akatsi South Municipality in the Volta Region have expressed concerns over low sales whilst the Ghanaian currency has been performing well against other foreign currencies.

They lament low patronage in their daily dealings since the Cedi began to appreciate against major foreign currencies.

Some are of the view that the situation was due to factors such as climate change conditions among others.

President John Dramani Mahama, in an address at the Ghana Presidential Investment Forum on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX) on Wednesday, said Ghana has restored macroeconomic stability, thereby, improving investor confidence.

During the engagement, President Mahama declared that the Ghana Cedi remained the best-performing currency in the world this year, urging Japanese businesses to seize new investment opportunities in Ghana.

The declaration, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered, received positive responses from some business individuals from Akatsi South.

Some business entities, during a tour by the GNA within the Akatsi main township, on condition of anonymity, however, lamented recording a significant decrease in their daily sales.

Notable among them were distribution depots, provision shops, hardware stores, and others.

Meanwhile, President Mahama during the session in Japan, pointed to the positive signal of falling inflation, recent sovereign credit upgrades, and wide-ranging reforms aimed at lowering the cost of doing business as clear signs of Ghana’s turnaround.

“Inflation rose to a high of almost 23% in 2024 and it’s currently down to 13.7% and we expect that by the end of the year to hit single digits,” he said.

President Mahama also positioned Ghana as a stable, democratic, and business-friendly hub in West Africa, stressing its role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Per the Bank of Ghana (BoG) rate on Friday, August 22, the Cedi was buying at 10.9445 and selling at 10.9555 to a Dollar.

The Pound Sterling was buying at 14.6865 and selling at 14.7022 and Euro at a buying figure of 12.7045 and selling at 12.7171.

Otto Addo fumes over racism in German football after Antwi Adjei and Kesley Owusu incidents

Coach of the senior national team of Ghana, Otto Addo, has expressed frustration over the growing incidents of racism in German football following the recent abuse of several players in the first round of the DFB Pokal including Black Stars winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei and Kelsey Owusu.

Antwi-Adjei was whistled at with the “N-word” during the game between Schalke O4 and Lokomotiv Leipzig, forcing the winger to report to the referee.

Meanwhile, Owusu was abused on social media the same weekend during the game against Borussia Dortmund, a former club of Addo, for a tackle on midfielder Yan Couto.

Elsewhere, Nadiem Amiri of Mainz O5 received hate messages after the match against Kaizerslautern.

Addo, a campaigner against racism through his “Roots – Against Racism in Sport” initiative has charged the German Football Association to make the fight against the undesirous canker eating up the sport their main priority.

“For years, we’ve seen the same pattern: an incident, then downplaying, then silence,” he said, as quoted Kicker.

“Racism in football is not an accident or a marginal phenomenon—it is systemic,” Addo added.

“As long as we talk about individual perpetrators and individual idiots, the system remains untouched. In order to change the system, the DFB and DFL must finally make anti-racism a top priority.”

Addo, born to Ghanaian parents in Germany, spent his entire football career playing in the European country, where he featured for the likes of Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund.

Despite his Germany heritage, he chose to represent Ghana at international level, going on to become the coach of the Black Stars.

Military auditor in Congo seeks death penalty for former president Kabila

Democratic Republic of Congo's former President Joseph Kabila Democratic Republic of Congo’s former President Joseph Kabila

Congo’s military auditor general formally told a military court on Friday August 22, 2025, that he is seeking the death penalty for former President Joseph Kabila, who is being tried in absentia for war crimes including homicide, rape and torture.

Kabila spent almost two decades in power before stepping down in 2018. He has been abroad since late 2023, mostly in South Africa. He was last seen in public in rebel-held territory in Congo’s volatile east.

He is wanted in Congo for alleged crimes against humanity including a role in the massacre of civilians.

The military’s auditor general, General Likulia Lucien Rene, told the high court that he was seeking the death penalty for homicide, rape, deportation and torture, among other crimes.

Kabila announced that he was returning to Congo to help push for peace in the war-ravaged east in April. Congo’s government swiftly moved to ban his political party later that month and seize his assets.

In May, Congo’s senate voted to lift Kabila’s immunity from prosecution.

Kabila made an appearance in the rebel-held east in late May, meeting with religious leaders.

Congo’s long-running crisis in the east erupted this year when Rwanda-backed M23 rebels seized swaths of mineral-rich eastern territory in January.

“It is an act of relentlessness and persecution against a member of the opposition,” Ferdinand Kambere, Kabila’s political party secretary, told Reuters on Friday.

Gary Al-Smith weighs in on Shatta Wale’s influence after EOCO detention

Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale

Ghanaian sports journalist Gary Al-Smith has shared his thoughts on the detention of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), reflecting on the musician’s enduring influence and the unrealized potential of the Shatta Movement.

In a social media post, Al-Smith recalled how, between 2014 and 2018, Wale’s dominance in the music industry sparked the creation of “Corporate SM” WhatsApp groups—private spaces where professionals who admired him but avoided public association with his controversies could connect.

“Between 2014 and ~2018, when Shatta Wale was at his musical peak, there were multiple WhatsApp groups called ‘Corporate SM’ made up of professionals who could/did not want to publicly ID with SM, for various reasons,” Al-Smith wrote. “The credentials of these people were impressive. Big boys and girls.”

According to him, members of these groups sought to professionalize the brand. A High Court judge drafted a legal playbook for SM, while a senior communications executive developed a roadmap for intellectual property and branding. The goal, Al-Smith explained, was to transform Wale’s obvious potential into a sustainable global brand.

Despite these efforts, he noted, the initiative eventually dissolved. “You know what they say about horses, riversides, & water,” Al-Smith remarked.

Still, Shatta Wale’s influence is undeniable. The outpouring of support following his latest legal troubles, Al-Smith argued, underscores his unmatched ability to mobilize fans: “The potential that man called Shatta has to energise his fanbase to do great things is unmatched by any artiste in Ghana, dead or alive.”

He ended his reflection with a sobering observation that Wale’s charisma could have built an unstoppable movement if only it had been paired with the right structures. “If only his successive management teams allowed his charisma to dovetail into proper, modern structures, the Shatta Movement would be unstoppable,” Al-Smith said.

“Wishing you well, Shatta Wale,” he concluded.

Medikal reacts for the first time following Shatta Wale’s release

Musician Medikal (L) and Shatta Wale Musician Medikal (L) and Shatta Wale

Medikal has come under severe criticism as fans questioned his absence while his close friend and collaborator, Shatta Wale, faced detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

On Thursday, August 21, 2025, chaos erupted at EOCO’s Accra headquarters after news broke that Shatta Wale had been detained the night before. Hundreds of loyal supporters thronged the premises, demanding his release.

The dancehall superstar was being investigated for alleged money laundering and tax evasion.

Before his detention, EOCO confiscated his 2019 Lamborghini Urus, which has since been linked to an FBI case.

Reports indicate that both Shatta Wale and a former officer of the National Signals Bureau are persons of interest in the ongoing probe.

Several of Shatta Wale’s close associates were spotted at EOCO on Thursday August 21, 2025, including his manager Sammy Flex, industry executive Leslie Quaynor, Rufftown Records boss Bullet and SM Empire member Captan.

They were actively working to ensure the musician met his bail conditions.

However, Medikal, who is widely regarded as Shatta Wale’s “partner in crime” in the entertainment space, was noticeably absent.

The rapper, who many expected to be physically present to support his friend, only surfaced online later in the evening.

At around 6:13 p.m., roughly the same time Shatta Wale was released, Medikal shared a post on social media.

This has left fans speculating about his silence and absence.

While some suggested he may have been working behind the scenes to assist, others criticised him for not standing publicly with Shatta Wale during such a turbulent period.

Deputy Education Minister vows to expose those involved in GES salary scandal

PAC has directed headteachers involved in wrongful validation of salaries to refund the money PAC has directed headteachers involved in wrongful validation of salaries to refund the money

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has hinted at exposing individuals involved in the fraudulent payment of unearned salaries within the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education.

He gave the assurance when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Friday, August 22, 2025.

The Builsa South MP led a team from the Ministry and GES to respond to findings in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report, which uncovered widespread financial irregularities.

The report revealed that some senior staff of the GES received salaries they had not earned, while certain headteachers validated payments for deceased staff.

It also cited weak supervision and poor internal controls that enabled these irregularities.

According to Dr Apaak, the findings in the report were alarming and should generate collective concern about the level of dishonesty within the system.

“This should be of concern to all of us. It is very worrying. The aspect of dishonesty cannot be overlooked. But I must state that we know of instances of collusion. Let’s not mince words. It is very strange that the Controller and Accountant-General would, on their own, decide to pay staff of GES at a rate higher than what they ought to be getting,” he stated.

He further assured the committee that ongoing measures by the Ministry and other agencies would soon expose all those behind the fraudulent acts.

“When the Director-General spoke about some work that we are doing, some of these issues are being considered. And sooner than later, those who have made it their mission to fleece the state through all kinds of schemes will be duly exposed, and I want to reassure the committee of that,” he added.

Following the revelations, the PAC has directed headteachers involved in the wrongful validation of salaries to refund the money within 30 days.

Technical Advisor to GRA Commissioner-General, Elsie Appau-Klu Technical Advisor to GRA Commissioner-General, Elsie Appau-Klu

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced plans to embark on a nationwide tax education campaign aimed at the informal sector before the end of 2025.

The initiative seeks to simplify tax information and improve voluntary compliance as part of efforts to expand the country’s tax base.

Speaking at the third edition of the Society for Women in Taxation (SWIT) Conference in Accra, Technical Advisor to the Commissioner-General, Elsie Appau-Klu, revealed that the upcoming campaign will focus on breaking down technical tax concepts into simple, everyday language.

“The Commissioner will soon launch what we’ve flagged as tax education. This is to break down tax information so that the uninformed, semi-literate, or semi-educated person can understand it in very clear and basic language. We are not going to use verbose expressions or grammatical jargon,” citinewsroom.com quoted her to have she said.

She stressed the importance of linking tax compliance to visible social benefits.

“How can the woman in Abossey Okai, Makola Market, or the one selling at a tabletop in my village understand that when they pay tax, their children will have better classrooms, their roads will improve, and their clinics will be better equipped?” she asked.

Chairperson of SWIT, Esi Sam, underscored the need for a respectful approach to sensitisation, noting that tax collection is most effective when citizens feel engaged.

Adding a technological perspective, Chief Executive Officer of Telecel Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai, urged the GRA to leverage digital tools and machine learning to improve informal sector tax administration.

GRA to slash effective VAT rate from 22% to 20%

She referenced international examples where technology has enhanced compliance, including Chile, India, Kenya and the United States.

Kurt Okraiku visited Kotoko at their camp Kurt Okraiku visited Kotoko at their camp

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, on Friday, August 22, 2025, paid a working visit to Asante Kotoko SC to motivate the team as they prepare for their return to continental football in the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

The GFA boss joined the Porcupine Warriors at their training camp in Akropong, where he interacted with players and technical staff during an intensive session. His visit was aimed at boosting the morale of the squad as they gear up for Africa’s prestigious inter-club competition.

In his address, President Simeon-Okraku reminded the team of the weight of expectation from millions of Ghanaians and the historic Ashanti Kingdom, urging them to approach the campaign with discipline, unity and determination.

“As representatives of Ghana on the African stage, you carry the hopes of an entire nation,” he told the players. “We at the FA are firmly behind you and believe you have what it takes to succeed.”

He drew parallels with Dreams FC’s remarkable run in the same competition two seasons ago, stressing that commitment, teamwork, and focus could propel Kotoko to continental glory.

“The expectations are huge,” he added. “When you stay united and work for each other, you can achieve anything. You have the capacity to restore Kotoko’s pride on the continent. Listen to your technical team and give everything to make Ghanaians proud.”

Asante Kotoko will open their Confederation Cup campaign against Nigerian side Kwara United in the preliminary round. The Porcupines host the first leg in Ghana between September 19-21, before traveling to Ilorin for the return fixture scheduled for September 26-28, 2025.

This engagement forms part of President Okraku’s broader initiative to support Ghanaian clubs competing on the continental stage. He has already visited Premier League champions Bibiani Gold Stars and Women’s Premier League winners Police Ladies FC, reaffirming the FA’s commitment to all its representatives.

Kotoko’s participation this season marks their first appearance in the Confederation Cup since 2022. Their return provides an opportunity to re-establish their status as one of Africa’s most decorated clubs and to bring renewed pride to Ghanaian football.

S&P upgrades Kenya’s credit rating to ‘B’ on easing liquidity risks

Global credit ratings agency S&P upgraded Kenya’s long-term sovereign credit rating to ‘B’ from ‘B-‘ on Friday, citing reduced near-term external liquidity risks.

Robust export earnings and diaspora remittances have bolstered Kenya’s foreign exchange reserves, helping ease pressures related to high external imbalances, the rating agency said in a statement.

S&P expects Kenya’s solid economic growth and improved liquidity outlook to offset pressures stemming from high interest costs and a slow fiscal consolidation process.

President William Ruto said on Wednesday Kenya’s economic growth this year is expected to exceed official forecasts despite higher U.S. tariffs and other challenges.

The economy is expected to grow by 5.6% this year, he added, which is above the Kenyan finance ministry’s forecast of 5.3% and the central bank’s projection of 5.2%.

Kenya recorded an economic growth of 4.7% a year ago.

The agency maintained the country’s outlook at ‘stable’.

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo calls for prison sentences to tackle racism in football – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has urged football authorities and the legal system to consider prison terms as punishment for racist abuse in the sport.

His comments follow what he described as a “painful” incident of abuse directed at him during Bournemouth’s Premier League opener against Liverpool.

The Ghana international, who scored twice in his side’s 4-2 defeat at Anfield, reported the matter to referee Anthony Taylor after allegedly being targeted by a pitch-side spectator.

Merseyside Police later arrested a 47-year-old man, who has since been released on bail on suspicion of an aggravated public order offence. As part of his bail conditions, the man has been barred from attending any regulated football match in the UK.

In his first public reaction, Semenyo insisted existing measures are inadequate. “Whatever the Premier League are doing, it’s not enough and there’s more that needs to be done,” he told ITV News.

He suggested stronger deterrents must be enforced. “It could be jail time, it could be banned from stadiums for a lifetime, it could be anything along the lines of that, but I feel like there has to be something else,” he added.

It would be a waste of money for the EC to organize the Tamale Central By-election – Nana Kay

Bryan Acheampong’s team downplays latest Global InfoAnalytics poll

0

Dr. Bryan Acheampong

A key aide to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Pius Enam Hadzide, has responded to the recent Global Info Analytics poll, which places former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia significantly ahead in the contest to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the upcoming 2028 general elections.

The poll, released on August 21, revealed that Dr. Bawumia enjoys a substantial 52% support among NPP delegates, with Kennedy Agyapong trailing at 17% and Dr. Bryan Acheampong at a mere 3%.

Conducted between August 12 and 20, the poll surveyed 2,656 NPP delegates nationwide, providing a snapshot of the current political landscape.

However, in an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on August 22, Hadzide cast doubt on the reliability of such political polls, describing them as potential “psychological operations” orchestrated by rivals to manipulate public perception.

“I don’t know about it, but many of these researches are a psychological operation sometimes sponsored by politicians who seek to deceive unsuspecting audiences and to create a misleading impression,” he asserted, questioning the motives behind the poll and its findings.

Despite his scepticism, Hadzide stressed that the Bryan Acheampong campaign values all feedback, including polling data.

“Our attitude at the Bryan Acheampong campaign is that all research, wherever they are coming from, we take it as feedback… and if there are any gaps, we work on those,” he explained, underscoring the campaign’s commitment to continuous improvement.

Hadzide also expressed confidence in Dr. Acheampong’s potential, noting that this is his first bid for the NPP flagbearer position and that he entered the race later than his competitors. “We are very confident that Dr. Bryan Acheampong is not only the fastest growing contender in this race—published research has also confirmed this,” he insisted.

Political analysts suggest that the dynamics within the NPP are evolving as the 2028 elections approach, with the latest poll serving as a crucial indicator of delegate sentiments.

The survey results highlight a significant gap between Bawumia and his closest competitor, prompting discussions about the effectiveness of campaigning strategies among other candidates.

As the race intensifies, the NPP faces a critical moment in its leadership selection process.

With Dr. Bawumia currently leading, the pressure is mounting on his opponents to refine their strategies and resonate more effectively with party delegates.

As the political landscape continues to shift, observers are keenly awaiting how the upcoming months will shape the narrative leading up to the NPP’s flagbearer decision.

The implications of these findings could play a pivotal role in determining the party’s direction and its chances in the general elections.

YEA faces scrutiny over 72 percent rent hike

Malik Basintale, the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of YEA Malik Basintale, the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of YEA

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament Friday queried the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) over a sharp 72 percent increase in rent payments.

The rent soared from GH¢3.2 million in 2023 to GH¢5.5 million in 2024.

Malik Basintale, the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of YEA and other officials faced tough questions during PAC’s public hearing in Parliament House for not speaking out against the steep rise in rental costs.

According to the YEA management, the rent charges began after the Ministry of Works and Housing handed over the facility currently occupied by the Agency to Messrs K&A Developers as private managers in 2023.

George Opare Addo, the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, told the Committee that discussions were ongoing with the Office of the Chief of Staff to secure permanent office space for the Agency.

“Madam Chairperson, we have engaged with the Chief of Staff on getting permanent accommodation for the YEA. In due time, we will report to this august House on the plans made and the facilities made available to the Agency,” Mr. Addo said.

That, he explained, aimed to ease the financial burden on the Agency.

The PAC’s scrutiny forms part of Parliament’s oversight mandate to ensure value for money in the use of state resources. The Committee’s concerns highlight the need for accountability in the Agency’s expenditure.

The PAC public hearing slated from Tuesday, August 19, to Tuesday, August 26, would consider the Auditor-General’s report on MDAs for the year ended December 31, 2024.

The six-day public hearing will examine the Auditor-General’s report, which highlighted significant issues, including Ghana’s public debt and weaknesses in financial reporting and asset management.

Fiorentina join race to sign Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey from Brighton

Fiorentina is reportedly interested in Tariq Lamptey Fiorentina is reportedly interested in Tariq Lamptey

Serie A outfit Fiorentina are reportedly interested in securing the services of Ghanaian international Tariq Lamptey from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Italian club is considering Lamptey as a backup option for Brazilian defender Dodo as they kick off their new season this weekend.

Known more for his pace and technical ability than his physical presence, Lamptey offers dynamic support down the right flank, combining speed with intelligent attacking runs.

Lamptey’s campaign last season was hampered by recurring injuries, limiting him to just 15 appearances for Brighton.

Despite the setbacks, he managed to contribute two goals and several assists. In Brighton’s season opener against Fulham last weekend, Lamptey was not included in the matchday squad.

Since joining Brighton from Chelsea, the former right-back has accumulated 104 appearances, scoring three goals and establishing himself as a versatile option on the flank.

Rwanda rejects accusations allied rebels in Congo massacred civilians

Rwanda has long denied helping M23 and says its forces act in self-defence Rwanda has long denied helping M23 and says its forces act in self-defence

Rwanda on Friday rejected accusations that Kigali-backed M23 rebels massacred hundreds of people in the east of Democratic Republic of Congo in July, saying there was no credible evidence to support the claims.

Reuters first reported on the killings of farmers in Rutshuru territory by M23 rebels, citing findings by the U.N. Joint Human Rights Office.

Additional details about the massacre were reported by the U.S.-based group Human Rights Watch and the U.N. high commissioner for human rights.

“The Government of Rwanda firmly rejects the findings … alleging mass killing of civilians in Binza, Rutshuru territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo by ‘M23 supported by the Rwanda Defence Force’,” the Rwanda government said in a statement.

The accusations, the statement said, “have no basis in fact and lack any evidence.”

The rebels killed at least 319 civilians, including 48 women and 19 children, in an attack on four villages in Rutshuru from July 9 to July 21, Volker Turk, U.N. high commissioner for human rights, said on August 6.

Most of the victims were farmers out in their fields when they were attacked, according to Turk. In its report, Human Rights Watch said it documented at least 140 deaths but that the number of victims may exceed 300.

Persistent violence in eastern Congo threatens U.S. President Donald Trump’s vision for the region, which has been plagued by war for decades and is rich in minerals including gold, cobalt, coltan, tungsten and tin.

A peace agreement signed on June 27 in Washington by the Congolese and Rwandan foreign ministers requires Congo to “neutralise” the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a Congo-based armed group that includes remnants of Rwanda’s former army and militias that carried out the 1994 genocide.

Rwanda has long denied helping M23 and says its forces act in self-defence.

She also encouraged them to remain committed to problem solving, emphasizing the importance of administration and welfare in their roles as future commanders.

The Vice President made the call at a joint graduation ceremony for the Senior Command and Staff Course 46, the Master of Science (MSc) Defence and International Politics, and the MSc Security Studies 2025, programme at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), at Teshie.

The event saw the graduation of 135 students, including 30 officers from 16 allied African countries, and civilians.

Addressing the graduates, the Vice President said the current security challenge facing Ghana and the subregion range placed the collective responsibility for Ghana’s safety in their hands.

The Vice President who challenged the graduates to strive to apply what had learnt to have a positive impact on their respective countries, also called on them to be proud of the investment made in their training, and remain committed to the greater good.

“Never forget that leadership demands integrity, foresight, adaptability and commitment to the greater good,” she said

“We continue to believe in you because we know that you have undergone the right training,” she added.

She said as Ghana navigated the complexities of current global dynamics, including international conflicts, alliances and partnerships, it was essential for its security officers to be trained to broaden their perspectives and enhance their critical and strategic thinking.

She noted that the college had responded to the threats by introducing new disciplines to equip our officers with the necessary knowledge and skills, stating that “these programmers will enhance our officers’ ability to analyze global events, predict potential conflicts and make informed strategic decisions.”

She said, “For instance, the introduction of multi-domain operations and future-wise modules into the curriculum is timely, given the evolving nature of contemporary security threats.”

Emphasizing the importance of the course, she explained that it broadened the knowledge of officers on security issues and equipped them with skills to address national and international security challenges.

The Vice President commended the college for maintaining high standards and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting institutions like GAFCSC to enhance teaching and learning.

Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Jackson Wonje, the Acting Commandant of GAFCSC, highlighted the college’s commitment to maintaining its reputation as a premier center of excellence in military education and strategic thinking.

He said the college had introduced new disciplines in multi-domain operations, future-wise modules, digitization awareness, and cybersecurity, as well as upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and service.

Underscoring the importance of the college’s role as a hub for Pan-African military operation and intellectual exchange, he urged the graduates to carry the GAFCSC spirit with them and be exemplary ambassadors of their alma mater.

Tensions flare at court as relatives of murdered immigration officer confront suspects

Tensions heightened outside the Adabraka District Court in Accra after proceedings in the case involving the alleged killing of immigration officer Stephen King Amoah were adjourned on Friday, August 22, 2025.

The second accused, Thomas Zigah, appeared before the court.

During proceedings, his counsel requested that the court allow Zigah to seek medical attention at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital instead of the Police Hospital, arguing that his client’s condition had deteriorated while in custody at the Railway Police Station.

The lawyer claimed the suspect had red eyes and required urgent care at an independent medical facility.

The prosecution opposed the request, noting that Zigah had already been taken to the Police Hospital twice, where he was treated and discharged.

The court ruled that if the suspect was still experiencing health challenges, a formal application would need to be filed to request a change of hospital.

Defence counsel also sought a one-week adjournment, suggesting that since the prosecution planned to take the accused to the hospital for a third time, a medical report should be provided as evidence.

Immigration Officer’s Death: Key suspect rearrested, charged with murder

The prosecution objected, citing that investigations had extended beyond Accra, requiring investigators to travel, making it impossible to conclude inquiries within a week.

As the proceedings concluded, relatives of the slain officer were reportedly present outside the court, visibly agitated over the adjournment and the ongoing trial.

In a video shared on the X page of Citi FM, some relatives could be heard hurling insults on the suspects while police officers escorted the two into a waiting vehicle.

One could be heard saying, “Bright, you have seen anything yet, we will meet in court again.”

The partially burnt body of the 38-year-old immigration officer was found in a gutter at Abuom Junction, near Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region.

Hearts of Oak coach Didi Dramani has played down his side’s penalty defeat to Bibiani GoldStars, insisting the performance offered enough positives despite the result.

The Phobians fought from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw in regulation time but fell 5-4 in the ensuing shootout in their GHALCA Top 4 fixture on Friday night.

“It’s not a bad day. Losing is part of it and we’ve learned a lot from it. Those are the good points we take from here,” Dramani reflected after the match.

GoldStars went ahead early when Samuel Atta Kumi converted a penalty in the 18th minute, before doubling his tally in the 34th minute after a rebound from Sampson Eduku’s effort.

Hearts responded with goals from George Paaku just before halftime and Mohammed Hussein early in the second half.

GoldStars’ Vincent Atingah held his nerve to score the decisive penalty, pushing his side to five points, one ahead of Hearts.

The Shama Municipal Assembly in the Western Region has earmarked the Shama Junction market to operate under the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy.

To this end, Paul Otis Dentu, the Shama Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has said the Assembly had put in place plans to revamp the facility to provide safe working space for traders to offer round-the-clock services to customers and clients.

Constructed in 2003, the Shama Junction market has struggled to thrive compared to markets in nearby areas like Inchaban and Beposo, with traders blaming poor infrastructure and weak maintenance oversights.

However, the MCE in an interview stated that the government would rehabilitate the facility to meet the demands of the market women.

He said: “We have chosen this market to operate under the government’s flagship 24-Hour economy policy because of its certain criteria like its proximity to a fuel station, entrance and exit points, and has the space, so we will do all we can to make it happen.”

Dentu said the move was part of the Assembly’s commitments to boost economic activities and propel growth in the municipality.

Meanwhile, the market women have welcomed the Assembly’s idea but called on authorities to put in place stringent mechanisms to ensure the success of the 24-Hour economy initiative.

Madam Mary Narkwah, a leader in the market, said: “We welcome the initiative, but we want authorities to clear those selling by the roadside, and commercial drivers also given a loading terminal so that our customers and clients can patronise our goods in the market.”

She said the success of the 24-Hour economy policy in the Shama Junction Market would depend on how swiftly authorities addressed their concerns.

“Thank you for your support at my official debut game It wasn’t the start we hoped for especially with my red card but I’m taking it as a learning experience I’m determined to improve and give you all a better performance next time your encouragement means a lot,” he posted on Instagram.

Bonsu Baah had earlier provided the assisted for his side’s opener which was converted by Gaston Alvarez but a late challenge in the 42nd minute saw the Ghanaian shown the marching orders.

Meanwhile, Al Ahli recovered after the early set back to head into the break 4-1 up after Frank Kessie had cancelled Alvarez’s strike.

Ivan Toney converted from the spot to hand Al Ahli the lead for the first time in the game before Enzo Milot and Kessie added two more strikes to the half.

After the break, Nacho scored an own goal as Al Ahli cruise to the final, where they will face Cristiano Ronaldo and his Al Nassr side.

Bonsu Baah will miss Al Qadsiah’s opening game of the campaign against Al-Najma Saudi on August 30.

London-based multidisciplinary and music executive KJ Spio, has linked up with one of Ghana’s hit-maker Kidi and Stalk Ashley for his latest track ‘Heat’.

Best known for his DJ Khaled-like status, KJ Apio has returned with another sultry summer anthem, “Heat” after teaming up with Oxlade on ‘Emiko’ in May 2025.

Harnessed with a hip-moving production from Crumz [Krept & Konan, Tion Wanye, Swarmz, Tinie Tempah, Mr Eazi, Big Shaq], KiDi opens the track with his signature silky vocals and infectious melodies.

Detailing a night of passion with a fellow love interest, KiDi’s artistry is swiftly complemented by Stalk Ashley’s slick penmanship, offering the woman’s perspective.

Laced with buttery harmonies, “Heat” is the ultimate sultry anthem that instantly commands your attention. As we continue to embrace the summer months, KJ Spio reiterates his trailblazing status with yet another irresistible spin.

When asked how the single came about KJ Spio stated, “KiDi and myself have been working on several records together in the studio in search of a new sound which fuses classic Ghana highlife music with R&B.

“Through the process we came up with a few records including ‘Heat’, I tried several vocalists on the feature but Stalk Ashley, someone I always wanted to work with, came up with the sweetest melodies and vocals.”

Apologise to health minister, respect farmers -Twum Boafo slams GRNMA General Secretary

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre, Ing Twum Boafo Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre, Ing Twum Boafo

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre, Ing Twum Boafo, has criticised Dr David Tenkorang-Twum, the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), for comments he made regarding the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s handling of an incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program on Friday, August 22, 2025, Ing Twum Boafo stated that Dr Tenkorang-Twum’s verbal attack on the Health Minister not only reflects disrespect for the minister’s office but also for farmers and the broader public.

Ing Twum Boafo cautioned Dr Tenkorang-Twum against using his position to advance narrow political interests instead of advocating for the welfare of nurses across the country.

A prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) urged Dr Tenkorang-Twum to apologise to Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Ghanaian farmers for his condescending and disrespectful remarks.

‘Apologise for subjecting farmers to public ridicule’- GNAFF to GRNMA secretary

“Dr Tenkorang should respect farmers. Some people are still quibbling over the result of the last election, and he is the person who ordered the strike of the nurses against this government. When NPP was in power, he did not lead any strike. We have seen the video of what allegedly happened and what point did Ralph attack anyone?

“These political hitch-jobs who find themselves in certain positions can continue what they are doing. He should respect farmers because we are alive today because people decided to farm.

“Just like we should respect nurses. Using his position to do politics is unbecoming of him. I will be the first person to advocate for Ralph to be dealt with if he indeed attacked a nurse because it’s in no one’s place to attack a nurse.

“Insulting the Health Minister because he is a farmer is very unbecoming. Somewhere along our lives, we should be grateful to people who decide to feed. The nurses’ association should tell Dr Tenkorang to apologise to the minister for insulting him. How many nurses or doctors in our political space have been Ministers of Health?” he quizzed.

Ralph must face the law – Dr Ayew demands justice over Ridge Hospital incidenta

Dr David Tenkorang-Twum incurred the displeasure of some Ghanaians following his sharp criticism of the health minister’s handling of an incident involving social activist Ralph Saint Williams.

He questioned the competence of the health minister, suggesting that his background as a farmer might hinder his understanding of issues within the health profession.

His comments have since been condemned by the health minister, several prominent political figures and nursing associations.

Ninth Parliament’s second meeting: milestones, tributes

0

A GNA feature By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Aug 18, GNA- As Ghana’s Ninth Parliament concludes its Second Meeting, it is time to reflect on the key achievements and milestones reached between May and August 2025.

This Session saw the House engaged in meaningful debates, vetting ministerial nominees, and passing crucial bills aimed at promoting development and reform.

A statement issued by Mr. David Sabatian Damoah, the Director of Media Relations, Parliament, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Accra, on Monday said throughout the Meeting, the House held multiple sittings, engaged in meaningful debates on various bills, vetted the President’s ministerial nominees, and considered Committee reports.

Legislative Achievements

At the core of Parliament’s responsibilities lies its legislative mandate. During this Second Meeting, Parliament successfully enacted several bills that addressed urgent national issues and promoted development-friendly reforms.

These included: The Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025, aimed at simplifying regulations, promoting sustainable aquaculture, and combating illegal fishing; the Road Maintenance Trust Fund Bill, 2025, which establishes a dedicated fund to maintain Ghana’s road infrastructure through a transparent and sustainable framework.

Other bills were the Energy Sector Levies Bill, 2025, which consolidates legislative provisions on energy levies to enhance efficiency and transparency; the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2025, restructures levy collection and deployment to strengthen financial stability for energy reforms, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, 2025, creates a Trust Fund to finance essential healthcare initiatives, infrastructure, and research, while the Social Protection Bill, 2025, provides a legal framework to boost social welfare programs for vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, the elderly, and children.

The other was the University for Development Studies Bill, 2025, which establishes the University for Development Studies (UDS) as an autonomous institution with improved governance and research capacity.

The Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Bill, 2025, clarifies procedures for declaring and observing national holidays to ensure consistency across the calendar.

These legislative measures were a result of extensive Committee deliberations and vigorous parliamentary debates, demonstrating Parliament’s responsiveness to national priorities.

Vetting of Supreme Court Justice and Deputy Ministerial Nominees

The Appointments Committee of Parliament publicly vetted seven nominees for the Supreme Court. These distinguished individuals, appointed by President John Dramani Mahama, were Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Adzua Bartels-Kodwo, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.

The nominees, all Justices of the Court of Appeal, answered questions concerning key constitutional principles, relevant case law, and their philosophical outlook on justice administration. Their vetting was comprehensive, with particular focus on legal expertise, impartiality, and vision for strengthening Ghana’s judiciary.

Further, Parliament also paid considerable attention to the vetting of four Deputy Ministerial nominees: Madam Dorcas Affo-Toffey (Transport), Mr. James Gyakye Quayson (Foreign Affairs), Mr. Mohammed Adam Sukparu (Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations), and Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah (Health). The Appointments Committee, chaired by Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, held hearings where nominees shared their vision, answered questions about their integrity, and discussed issues related to their respective ministries.

Mid-Year Budget Review Presentation

The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, presented the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review to the House on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

During his presentation, he emphasised fiscal discipline and a cautious economic outlook. He indicated to the House that the government was not seeking additional funds.

The review also focused on ongoing investments in key infrastructure and plans to improve revenue, including expanding taxes and reviewing current levies to keep the economy stable under the IMF-supported program.

Personalities and Dignitaries in the Chamber

A highlight of this Meeting was the visit of some important personalities. Ghana was proud to host India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, who addressed a special session of Parliament on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

During his presentation, he underscored strengthening cooperation and friendship between Ghana and India. His visit accentuated the growing relationship between the two countries. Several envoys from sister Parliaments, students from local schools, and identifiable civil society leaders were officially received, helping to create a lively and friendly atmosphere in the Chamber.

Tributes and National Mourning

The Meeting also featured heartfelt tributes. Parliament remembered the late Ernest Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, with Members eulogizing him for his dedication and service to his constituency and the country.

Across party lines, MPs eulogized him for his leadership, humility and honesty.

Parliament also recognised and honoured Daddy Lumba, one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians, who passed away recently. Mr. Akwasi Konadu, NPP MP for Manhyia North, led the tribute, calling Daddy Lumba a legendary artist whose music combined beautiful melodies with meaningful social messages.

As a result, MPs from both sides shared how his music touched lives and inspired many.

A few days after the House adjourned sine die, on Friday, August 1, 2025, the nation was saddened by a horrific helicopter crash that claimed the lives of dedicated public servants, including a National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, the late Murtala Mohammed Ibrahim.

“Not only was he an impassioned legislator, but also an affable individual who showed respect to everyone around him,” the House eulogised.

Celebrations

It was not all gloom; the House also celebrated the achievement of Ghana’s women’s national football team, the Black Queens, for winning bronze at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. They praised the team’s achievements and their role in inspiring young people and representing Ghana on the international stage.

Concluding Reflections

The Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament is a testimony to Ghana’s democratic resilience, the dedication of MPs, and the significance of Parliament in the life of our nation.

In a statement from the Speaker’s Office, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor reminded MPs that recess was not vacation time, urging them to engage actively in constituency work, oversight field visits, and deepening of democratic culture.

Parliament is set to reconvene in October 2025, with focus areas comprising budget preparations, implementation progress on newly passed bills, finalization of unresolved matters, continuation of oversight of national priorities, and policy debates.

Amedspor a good place to step up and get back to my best – Felix Afena-Gyan

0

Ghana forward Felix Afena-Gyan Ghana forward Felix Afena-Gyan

Ghana forward Felix Afena-Gyan says his move to Amedspor presents the right environment to rediscover his best form after a difficult spell in Italy.

The 22-year-old sealed a loan switch from Cremonese to the Turkish second-tier side for the remainder of the season, with an option for a permanent transfer.

“This is a good place to step up and get back to my best,” Afena-Gyan said after his unveiling on Wednesday, expressing optimism about his new challenge.

The loan to Amedspor is the striker’s second since joining Cremonese in 2022. His first was with Juventus Next Gen in Italy’s Serie C last season, where he showed signs of progress by scoring 10 goals in 30 appearances.

Afena-Gyan’s career has faced setbacks since his permanent departure from AS Roma.

In his first year at Cremonese, he made 23 Serie A appearances, starting only eight, before injuries disrupted his development. A fracture ruled him out for much of the following campaign in Serie B.

Now at Amedspor, the young forward hopes consistent playing time and a new atmosphere will reignite his career as he looks to establish himself once again.

Eswatini government faces court challenge for accepting US deportees

Protesters held placards as lead applicants addressed them outside the court Protesters held placards as lead applicants addressed them outside the court

Human rights lawyers and activists have sued the government of Eswatini for making a secretive deal with President Donald Trump’s administration to accept third-country deportees from the U.S., which they claim was unconstitutional.

The case was due to be heard at the High Court of Eswatini on Friday, but was postponed until September 25 because the government did not file response papers, the lead applicant told Reuters outside the court on Friday.

Eswatini’s Attorney General Sifiso Khumalo said in a text message that the case had no legal basis. “It’s a frivolous legal application,” he wrote.

In July the U.S. deported five individuals from Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Cuba and Yemen to the Southern African country. All were convicted felons, and Eswatini says it is holding them in solitary confinement until they can be repatriated.

The applicants in the case, led by the Eswatini Litigation Centre, say that the agreement made with the U.S. was illegal because it was not submitted to parliament for approval and the terms were not disclosed.

They also say they do not know the condition of the deportees because no one has been allowed access to them.

“We want the executive to be held accountable; we want transparency dealing with matters of state importance, (and) respect for the rights of all individuals who are in Eswatini regardless of who they may be,” said lead applicant and lawyer Mzwandile Masuku.

Eswatini, an absolute monarchy ruled by King Mswati III, has previously said the deportees pose no threat and that the agreement was based purely on its good relations with Washington.

The International Organization for Migration told Reuters it had received a request from Eswatini to provide “post-arrival assistance” for the deportees but did not say whether it would accept or what that might entail.

“We are discussing with Government of Eswatini, their request,” a spokesperson for the U.N. agency said on Thursday.

Trump aims to deport millions of immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally and his administration has sought to increase removals to third countries.

Team Eternity clarifies reason for missing 26th TGMA

0

Ghanaian gospel music group Team Eternity has cleared the air on their absence from the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards performance.

They explained that a clash of events, both locally and internationally, made it impossible for them to participate, noting that the situation was beyond their control.

Nayaw, the music director of the group, shared this in an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on Changes.

“We were supposed to go to the UK within that period. So there were yeses and nos, and some recording also came in at that same time,” he explained.

They debunked claims that they considered the event secular or that they were being prideful, stating that they saw it as a privilege to be invited to perform at such a prestigious event

“It was a privilege for them to invite us, so why would we turn down such an invitation?” he wondered.

Meanwhile, the team is preparing for the second edition of TEG LIVE, a live recording concert scheduled to take place on September 7 at the Grand Arena in Accra.

They recorded Defe Defe during the first edition, which became a hit song and earned them several award nominations.

At the second edition, twelve songs will be recorded, and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets and be part of this spirit-filled event.

Asante Kotoko captures Accra Lions CB Hamzata until 2028

0

Asante Kotoko have bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of former Accra Lions and Kenpong Academy centre-back Musah Hamzata on a three-year contract ahead of the 2025/26 upcoming season.

The 23-year-old, who earned a reputation as one of the most reliable defenders in the Ghana Premier League during his stint with Accra Lions, was a target for several local clubs including Medeama, Aduana Stars, and Nations FC. However, he opted to join the Porcupine Warriors, sealing what is seen as a significant coup for the Kumasi giants.

Hamzata is admired for his potential dominance, composure in possession, and ability to marshal the backline qualities that made him one of the most sought-after young defenders in the domestic league.

With Kotoko looking to reshape their defense under a new technical direction following last season’s inconsistencies, Hamzata is expected to play a key role in solidifying their backline as they chase silverware this season.

The lanky defender has already joined his new teammates at Kotoko’s camp for the GHALCA Top Four tournament, where the Porcupine Warriors have endured a tough start, suffering back-to-back defeats against Bibiani GoldStars and Heart of Lions.

NHIS has warned service providers against charging illegal fees NHIS has warned service providers against charging illegal fees

Frank Duku, the Western North Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has cautioned National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) credentialed service providers in the region to refrain from charging illegal fees from subscribers.

He said this when the Regional NHIA held its 2025 mid-year performance review meeting at Sefwi Bodi.

He said: “I want to tell our credentialed health service providers to kindly move away from illegal charging of NHIS members when they visit the facilities to access health care.”

“Executive management has put in place measures to check those service providers who go contrary to this, and when caught, will be sanctioned.”

Duku encouraged the various NHIS district offices in the region to continue monitoring the activities of the health service providers in their respective areas and report organisations that flouted the directives.

He also urged the staff of the Scheme to continue working hard in their various districts to achieve their targets on membership and revenue mobilisation by the end of the year.

Duku stated during the meeting that the region had been adjudged third best in terms of performance for the 2025 half-year review performance nationwide.

The two-day programme brought together staff from the various districts across the region, and management and officers from the regional office.
