‘He was really suffering’ – Graham Potter explains Mohammed Kudus’ early substitution

0

Mohammed Kudus, midfielder for West Ham Mohammed Kudus, midfielder for West Ham

Mohammed Kudus’ early exit during West Ham’s match against Fulham on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, was addressed by the club’s new manager, Graham Potter.

The coach revealed that the talented midfielder was enduring a tough time on the pitch, which led to his substitution.

Kudus was taken off just after the hour mark, with the Hammers leading 2-1. Potter opted to bring on Danny Ings in place of the Ghanaian.

However, the decision sparked backlash from West Ham fans, many of whom felt that substituting their star player was unwarranted.

Addressing the criticism, Potter, who was managing his first Premier League game for West Ham, explained his reasoning.

The former Chelsea boss attributed Kudus’ substitution to his struggles on the pitch and highlighted the positive impact of Ings.

“We moved Mohammed Kudus a little bit higher up, and he helped us. Danny Ings coming on probably gave us more balance, even though it was a tough call because Mo’s a top, top player. But he was really suffering,” Potter said.

Kudus, now in his second season with West Ham, has faced challenges during the 2024/25 campaign. Unlike his impressive debut season, the 24-year-old has struggled for form, managing just three goals in 16 Premier League appearances.

US Senator Chases Ghana For $251m Debt To American Companies

0

In a stern warning, US Senator James E. Risch has urged the Ghanaian government to repay its outstanding debts to American companies, totaling approximately $251 million.

This demand comes as Ghana prepares to receive another tranche from the $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Senator Risch, Ranking Member of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, expressed concerns about Ghana’s unpaid debts to several US-based businesses, including Twin City Energy, American Tower Company, GSM, Chubb, Kosmos Energy, and Zipline.

These arrears have placed a significant financial burden on these companies, threatening their operations in Ghana.

The senator’s warning is not without precedent.

Ghana has struggled with debt repayment in the past, and this latest development may jeopardize the country’s ability to secure future IMF assistance.

Senator Risch emphasized that the US will only support further IMF aid to Ghana if the country commits to repaying its debts to American entities.

A Repayment Plan with Teeth

Senator Risch proposed a repayment plan that includes transparent auditing, reporting, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance.

He also suggested allocating portions of the IMF disbursement specifically to clear debts owed to American companies.

This plan aims to prevent Ghana from deepening its reliance on international financial assistance while neglecting its obligations to US private-sector partners.

A Warning to Ghana and the IMF

Senator Risch’s letter to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen serves as a warning to both Ghana and the IMF.

He cautioned that proceeding with IMF disbursements without addressing Ghana’s debt obligations could undermine constructive US engagement with Ghana.

The senator urged the US Treasury and its executive director at the IMF to prioritize the resolution of Ghana’s outstanding debts, tying future US support to responsible fiscal practices and fair treatment of American interests abroad.

Tamale South constituency ‘divided’ over Haruna Iddrisu’s Education Ministry portfolio

0

The nomination of former Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, as the Minister for Education, has sparked mixed reactions among residents of his constituency in the Northern region.

While some believe he would have been better suited for the Finance Ministry due to his experience and the country’s current economic challenges, others feel he would have excelled at the Roads and Highways or Defence Ministry.

However, many residents have expressed satisfaction with his nomination to the Education Ministry.

Speaking to JoyNews‘ correspondent Martina Bugri, a resident, despite his affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), voiced disappointment with the portfolio assigned to Mr Iddrisu.

“Nitiwul was appointed Defence Minister and he brought many Konkombas into the military. If Lawyer Haruna had gone there, he could have also facilitated the inclusion of Northerners from Gonjaland, Mamprugu, Dagombas, and Nanumbas into the army. I must say we are not happy with what he has been given,” the resident remarked.

Another resident, while acknowledging the importance of the Education Ministry, expressed a preference for Mr Iddrisu as Finance Minister, given the pressing need for competent leadership to address the country’s economic challenges.

The Tamale South Constituency Secretary of the NDC, Seidu Abass Alhassan, described the appointment as a source of immense joy for the constituency.

“When the news of Haurna Iddrisus’ appointment broke, a whole lot of people called me to find out how we felt about his appointment.

“I told them that Tamale South constituency is the happiest constituency under the sun today because Hon. Haruna Iddrisu is a distinguished politician, a politician who has excelled in so many ministries in this country,” he stated.

He praised President John Dramani Mahama for reposing confidence in Mr Iddrisu, adding, “We the people of Tamale South Constituency are extremely happy and wish to express our profound gratitude to the President for the confidence reposed in our Hon. Member for Tamale South Constituency.”

On his part, the Tamale South Constituency Communication Officer of the NDC, Issak Abdul Fatau, echoed similar sentiments, celebrating the announcement as a reflection of Mr Iddrisu’s competence and dedication.

“We indeed are very grateful. The announcement came to us at a time we anticipated it. We knew very well that Haruna Iddrisu was a man of wisdom and a man of accolades. He has served the country and the NDC so much that everybody was waiting to hear his nomination.

“We thank the President of the Republic of Ghana His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for nominating Haruna Iddrisu for the Ministry of Education. Hon. Haruna has served the country in a number of ministries where he has chalked numerous successes…. So I believe going forward, the Education Ministry is going to see a new facelift under the stewardship of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu,” he said.

Residents and constituency leaders remain hopeful that Haruna Iddrisu’s tenure will bring transformative leadership to the Education Ministry and tackle the challenges confronting the sector.

Mr Iddrisu, a leading political figure in the NDC from the north, has served in the Communication Ministry, Trade and Industry Ministry and as Minister of Employment and Labour Relations in past NDC administrations.

Court grants forex trader GH¢5m bail over fraud, theft

0

The Accra Circuit Court Nine has granted a GH¢5 million bail with four sureties to Benjamin Appiah Boateng, a forex trader, who faces charges of fraud and theft.

The court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, also ordered that one of the sureties be justified and that Boateng deposit his travel documents with the court’s registry.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on February 5, 2025.

Boateng is accused of defrauding two individuals, Mr. Berry Kwadwo Agyapong and Mr. David Burke, of $300,000 and GH¢10,445,000 respectively through fraudulent online investments in UDST and Binance cryptocurrency platforms.

Police Chief Inspector Jonas Lawyer told the court that Boateng took the money from the two complainants under the pretense of investing it in the online platforms.

Agyapong, a business consultant, had already invested $300,000 before introducing Boateng to Burke, a businessman.

Burke, convinced by Agyapong’s endorsement, invested GH¢555,000 initially and later added GH¢9,890,000 to increase his investment.

Boateng assured both complainants that the investments were performing well, with dividends being paid.

However, when Burke requested to withdraw his investment and any dividends on December 14, 2024, Boateng stopped responding to calls.

Burke then contacted Agyapong, who also tried reaching Boateng.

In response, Boateng allegedly sent a WhatsApp voice note and a supposed suicide note, claiming that he had lost all the investments through online gambling on the platform “Stake.”

This prompted the complainants to report the matter to the police, leading to Boateng’s arrest.

He admitted to the offenses during questioning.

Dafeamekpor narrates how his 8-bedroom house was demolished under Akufo-Addo’s government

0

Member of Parliament (MP) of South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor Member of Parliament (MP) of South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor

The Member of Parliament (MP) of South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has opened up about how his property – an 8-bedroom apartment at Adenta, in the Greater Accra Region, was destroyed under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

Speaking during a panel discussion on the Good Morning Ghana programme on January 16, 2024, Dafeamekpor said that in just one day, the 8-bedroom house he had used all his sweat to build was destroyed.

He said that he took the government to court, and after eight years, the government has neither been able to prove that his structure was illegal nor that the land it was built on was not his.

He added that the military men and the military vehicle that transported them to destroy his house have been disowned by the army.

“In 2017, I acquired land from chiefs of Adenta that I had done legal work for, and they assigned it to me, properly registered. As a young man in the law, I garnered all the resources I could, put up my eight-bedroom house.

“Just one night, one dawn, State Housing came with the support of the police and the military to raze it down and some of my neighbours under the pretext that it was state land. We’ve been in court since. They can’t prove their case for eight years. They’ve destroyed my property,” he narrated.

He added, “They brought a military vehicle occupied by about seven military men with guns and policemen to cordon off the area before they carried out the demolishing. I took evidence. I took a video of the vehicle’s number plate. I contacted the military; they said they didn’t know that vehicle. It is not part of their fleet of vehicles. They don’t know these men. But they came in full military regalia.”

The South Dayi legislator made these remarks while rebutting criticism of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) preparatory committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama.

He said that the committee is at least investigating instances of state capture and corruption, unlike the Akufo-Addo government, where people were just attacked, and their properties taken based on mere suspicions.

“They are even fortunate that this president has given an official stamp and constituted a committee of this nature to handle the issues in the manner they are doing… The president (Akufo-Addo) didn’t set up ORAL at the time. They just came in a gestapo manner.

“Other persons suffered. People were in vehicles in traffic and they were taken out of their vehicles, and the vehicles taken away from them till today. You are fortunate to have ORAL that is being decent about demand for information. Under your government, you were taking property from people that you suspected were government in traffic. People have been quiet. So, this criticism is a very lame one,” he stated.

Sarkodie Hasn’t Gotten Any Solo Hit Since ‘Borga Borga’ Apart from Features – Kevin Taylor Blasts Sark as ‘Foos’ Musician

0

U.S.-based Ghanaian political commentator, Kevin Taylor, has once again come after Sarkodie with no mercy.

Taylor, in a new rant against Obidi, accused him of being one of the most overrated musicians in Ghana.

According to Kevin, Sarkodie has not had a solo hit in his career since ‘Boga Boga’ over a decade ago.

He said the only reason Sarkodie has remained relevant is that whenever a new star comes up, he forces himself upon the star and gets a feature.

Taylor has been on Sarkodie ever since his infamous tweet in which he appeared to rubbish the return of John Mahama to the Presidency as ‘back to gari soakings’.

Watch Taylor’s latest attack below…

Meanwhile, Sarkodie also replied Kevin Taylor, blasting his critics as f**ls.

Unidentified gunmen ambush military-escorted vehicle in Bawku

0

Some unidentified gunmen have ambushed and opened fire on a vehicle traveling from Kulungugu to the Bawku township.

The vehicle with registration number GA 4454-09 was under military escort.

However, the presence of the officers did not deter the assailants from engaging in the attack.

While no casualties have been confirmed, eyewitnesses say the shooting was intense.

The Bawku area remains volatile despite numerous measures to restore peace including the enforcement of a dawn-to-dusk curfew.

On Tuesday, January 16, President John Mahama visited Bawku and Nalerigu as part of efforts to seek lasting solutions to the conflict in the area.

Saving Ghana’s Dying Textile Industry; The Role the President Can Directly Play -Osarfo Anthony

This blog is managed by the content creator and not GhanaWeb, its affiliates, or employees. Advertising on this blog requires a minimum of GH₵50 a week. Contact the blog owner with any queries.

Addressing the fundamental issues facing Africa can often be straightforward if we choose to act. Yet, both citizens and leaders tend to overlook these solutions or resort to complex measures, such as turning to the World Bank, IMF, or foreign consultants, which often come with stringent conditions.

Here, I would like to share my thoughts on one issue that we can easily resolve: saving our dying textile industry.

For the past thirty years, I have read annual reports detailing the difficulties faced by the textile industry in Ghana, resulting in some companies shutting down or repeatedly laying off workers.

Currently, I seldom hear about prominent Ghanaian fashion brands or designers like MKOG, PKOG, Kofi Ansah, Candling, and others.

Despite this significant challenge within the textile sector, most citizens wear foreign fabrics and styles. Many white-collar workers don foreign clothing as their official dress code from Monday to Thursday, while our textile industries struggle to become profitable or even break even.

I believe the President can use his esteemed office and charisma to address this enormous issue with a simple Executive Order:

— All government workers should wear African print or dress to work from Monday to Friday.

Or…

— All government workers who receive special clothing allowances must wear African attire to the office.

It doesn’t make economic sense for the government to pay clothing allowances to workers to buy and wear foreign fashion brands for those foreign textile industries to flourish, while Ghanaian ones suffer.

Does the government need to meet with the World Bank on such a directive? No! Can the World Bank prevent this directive? No! Can the IMF pressure the President of Ghana to rescind this directive? Absolutely not!

This initiative could create more jobs and revenue for tailors, fashion designers, fashion schools, textile companies or factories, generate tax revenue for the government in the form of corporate tax and PAYE. It could also provide foreign exchange for exporters of African wear, leading to remarkable positive balance of trade and GDP growth.

Given our democratic system, I anticipate potential human rights concerns or protests against this proposal. However, we must be willing to support our leaders and make sacrifices as citizens to address our collective socio-economic challenges.

In my own small way, I sport more African wear and would wholeheartedly embrace the idea of the President directing all government workers to wear African dress from Monday to Friday. If many will not support it, then let’s continue to wallow in the quagmire and stop crying for economic freedom.

Finally, I acknowledge that my proposal is not exhaustive. You’re free to add or subtract as you deem fit.

Until then… Motwum!

Stunning Outfits You Can Rock And Recreate As A Fashionista

0

Fashion is all about self-expression, confidence, and creativity. Whether you’re heading to a chic brunch, a glamorous party, or just out for a casual day, creating outfits that make a statement is key. Here are some stunning outfit ideas that any fashionista can rock and recreate, no matter the occasion.

1. Power Suit With a Twist

A classic power suit never goes out of style, but to make it truly yours, add unique details. Think of a well-tailored blazer and trousers combo in bold colors like royal blue, emerald green, or even pastel pink. Pair it with a silk blouse and strappy heels for an elevated look. You can even break up the suit by wearing the blazer over a graphic tee or a lace top for a fun contrast.

2. Street Chic Vibes

For a casual yet stylish look, opt for oversized denim jackets, chunky sneakers, and high-waisted mom jeans. Layer with a fitted turtleneck or a simple crop top underneath. This effortlessly cool ensemble works perfectly for running errands or grabbing coffee, while still making a fashion statement. Accessorize with a sleek crossbody bag and minimalist jewelry to add some flair.

3. The Little Black Dress (LBD) Reinvented

The LBD is an iconic piece, but to stand out, play with texture and accessories. Go for a velvet or satin fabric, and add bold accessories like a statement belt, dramatic earrings, or a leather jacket. You can also experiment with a bodycon silhouette or a loose, flowy fit depending on your style. Add pointed-toe heels to complete the look.

4. The Boho Maxi Dress

A flowing boho maxi dress in earthy tones is perfect for a laid-back, feminine look. Pair it with gladiator sandals or ankle boots and layer with a chunky cardigan or denim jacket. Add layered necklaces and a wide-brimmed hat to achieve a bohemian-chic vibe.

5. Edgy Monochrome Look

Monochromatic outfits are not only stylish but also sophisticated. Try an all-black outfit with leather pants, a black turtleneck, and a sleek blazer. Complete the look with combat boots and bold accessories to create an edgy, modern feel. You can easily swap black for any color like all-white or navy to mix things up.

Fashion is about taking risks and experimenting with styles that speak to your personality. Whether you choose to go bold, classic, or effortlessly casual, remember that confidence is the key to pulling off any outfit.

Mahama Must Reconsider Emissions Levy Decision- IPPG

0

The International Perspective for Policy Governance (IPPG), has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his proposed decision to scrap the emissions levy.

In a statement issued and signed on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 by Research Fellow at the International Perspective for Policy and Governance (IPPG), Mr. Seth Owusu-Mante said while the intent to scrap various taxes aims to alleviate economic burdens on citizens, IPPG retaining the emissions levy and strategically channeling its revenues into climate finance will support the government in fulfilling its climate change, green growth, and renewable energy manifesto promises.

“Additionally, the government could utilize the revenues to incentivize companies to adopt environmentally responsible expansions under the 24-Hour Economy policy and further finance initiatives to combat air pollution to reduce the estimated 28,000 annual premature deaths caused by air pollution in Ghana”

The emissions levy was introduced in December 2023 through the enactment of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) with a primary goal to impose charges on carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions from key sectors such as construction, manufacturing, mining, energy, and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

IPPG, however, stated that the lack of a clearly allocated mechanism for revenue from the levy has been an oversight by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration undermining one of the core principles of any carbon tax and the reinvestment of revenues into clean energy projects and climate action.

It also said without reinvestment, the levy is perceived as a general tax rather than a transformative tool for addressing climate challenges and fostering green economic growth.

It said “Climate change poses significant challenges to Ghana, with severe impacts on economic sectors including agriculture, water resources, health, and infrastructure. Its effects exacerbate vulnerabilities, particularly for rural, women, and marginalized communities, who are disproportionately affected by extreme weather events, erratic rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures”.

It said the NDC, in its manifesto also acknowledged the challenges and outlined a series of actions to address climate impacts through cross-sectoral approaches as such establishing a dedicated climate fund using revenues from the emissions levy will provide an essential local financing mechanism to implement these manifesto plans.

It said such a fund would also ensure predictable and accessible resources to drive climate adaptation and mitigation efforts as well as help reduce Ghana’s reliance on external aid for climate finance and strengthen the country’s efforts to meet its climate and development goals.

It also recommended cross-sectoral climate Resilience Initiatives, such as climate-smart agriculture, water management, forestry, incentivizing Green Practices for a 24-Hour Economy, Scaling Renewable Energy to drive large-scale renewable energy projects such as solar and wind farms, waste-to-energy systems, and off-grid solutions, as outlined in the NDC manifesto among others.

It further indicated that given the NDC’s earlier promise to repeal the emissions levy, it is crucial for the government to adopt a pragmatic and strategic approach while consulting stakeholders on the benefits of retaining the emissions levy.

GH₵490m unaccounted for by ECG in three months – Audit report

0

An audit of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) revenue collection revealed a discrepancy of GH₵490 million between October and December 2023.

This discrepancy concerns the company’s tariff and non-tariff revenue generated.

In the audit report shared by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the discrepancy was identified between the regional bank accounts and the headquarters’ account of ECG.

According to the report, “Between October and December 2023, ECG reported a revenue of GH₵3.38 billion. However, based on information from the Head Office bank accounts analysed, the recorded revenue was GH₵3.87 billion.”

The report disclosed that the unaccounted funds were identified following discussions with ECG, where it was noted that all funds from the district and regional accounts are transferred to the 14 head office accounts at the end of each month.

This resulted in the GH₵490 million discrepancy between the figures reported by the analysis and those reported by ECG.

The audit explained that the analysis was “based on identification, review, and analysis of the relevant bank accounts used by ECG in its operations, including those for revenue collection and disbursements.”

To prevent such discrepancies in the future, the auditors recommended several steps, including the use of debit notes for fuel purchases, internal reconciliation mechanisms, revenue data from the ECG Cash Settlement Platform (ECSP) vendor, a review of the approach to the Single Collection Account, and the development of a monitoring system for allocation.

I expected NPP government to withdraw my court case – Kwesi Nyantakyi

0

Former GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi Former GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has expressed disappointment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over their negligence in his legal battles.

According to him, he expected the party to cancel his court case, which he has been battling for years, to clear him of corruption allegations.

The former GFA boss noted that when he contested the NPP parliamentary primaries in the Ejisu constituency, the case was discussed within the party, but no action was taken.

“Even during my prime time to contest the seat, it was an issue within the party. I thought that if I contested, they [NPP] would have canceled the court case,” he said in an interview with Hot FM.

Nyantakyi lamented the emotional toll and financial strain of his five-year legal battle, which remains unresolved.

“I haven’t spent any government money, I haven’t killed anybody, but I’m still in court,” he lamented.

Although Nyantakyi didn’t specify the case, he faces charges of fraud and corruption related to Anas Aremeyaw Anas’s “#Number 12 exposé.”

Abdulai Alhassan, the former Northern Regional GFA boss and second accused, also faces a conspiracy to commit fraud charge. Both have pleaded not guilty.

When the case was last called on June 10, 2024, Justice Marie-Louise Simmons stated that the High Court would await the Court of Appeal’s decision before proceeding with Nyantakyi’s trial [1).

The case was adjourned to October 16, 2024, after the court failed to sit on July 10, 2024, when the parties were expected to update the court on the appeal.

WAPCO’s rescheduled maintenance works will increase liquid fuel reserves

0

The Institute of Energy Security (IES) says the rescheduled maintenance works by the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCO) will enable government increase liquid fuel reserves for powering thermal plants during periods of shortage.

The comments by IES follows the confirmation that the second phase of WAPCO’s rescheduled maintenance works will run from February 3 to March 2, 2025.

This phase will include offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection, commonly referred to as pigging.

In an interview with Citi Business News, the Executive Director of IES, Nana Amoasi VII, noted that the planned maintenance will also assist the government in generating more energy to power plants.

“The deferment of the maintenance programme gives the government ample time to build up its liquid fuel reserves. In the event that the exercise begins and the national gas flow to the power plants in the Eastern enclave is interrupted, there will be sufficient liquid fuel available for the plants.”

“This includes plants like Asogli and the entire Tema power plant, ensuring that there is no loss of generation capacity. The government can proceed with confidence, avoiding criticism, while consumers can be assured of a consistent power supply”, he said.

Bawumia donates 250 packets of roofing sheets

0

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has donated 250 packets of roofing sheets totaling 5,000 pieces, along with ridge caps to help traders affected by the recent fire at Kantamanto Market rebuild their businesses.

The donation was presented on his behalf by former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover and his team.

Earlier, Dr. Bawumia had contributed GH¢200,000 to assist the traders in their recovery efforts.

Speaking to Citi News, Titus Glover emphasised the need for traders to secure insurance to protect against future disasters.

He also announced that Dr. Bawumia would provide CCTV cameras to enhance security once the market reconstruction is complete.

“I want to remind the traders of what His Excellency the Vice President said during his visit—that they should take insurance very seriously. As these infernos have become frequent, it is crucial they secure insurance coverage for their activities here. Security is also paramount.

“There is a need for the traders to establish their internal security arrangements. He promised that when the reconstruction is done, he will support them with CCTV cameras—‘the silent police’—to monitor activities in the market,” Glover stated.

Yaw Sarpong, Financial Secretary of the Kantamanto Market, expressed gratitude for the generous donation of 250 packets of roofing sheets and other forms of support.

“He came here and presented an amount of GH¢200,000 to us, which was very generous. We thought he would not come again, but fortunately, he has returned with 250 packets of iron sheets, which are more than sufficient to roof our structure. We thank him so much”.

Kpandai MP blames Bagbin for NPP’s election defeat

0

Kpandai Member of Parliament (MP) Matthew Nyindam has blamed Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 elections.

According to him, Ghana found itself in a unique situation where, while former President Akufo-Addo was head of state, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) controlled the eighth parliament.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam show, he criticized the lack of cooperation from the legislature, stating that Bagbin’s leadership failed to support the government in fulfilling its objectives.

“The NPP faced significant challenges because the 8th Parliament was not working in the best interests of the government. Bagbin, being an NDC member, led a parliament that never supported the former Akufo-Addo government, which created a difficult situation for the party and the nation,” he asserted.

Reflecting on events leading up to the 2024 election, Mr. Nyindam described the period as one filled with “disasters” that ultimately hurt the NPP’s chances.

Despite the NPP’s loss, he remains optimistic about its future, stating that the NPP is still a strong party.

The MP also took the opportunity to defend Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate.

He argued that Dr. Bawumia should not be blamed for the party’s defeat, emphasizing that the challenges faced by the NPP were largely external.

“The elections were not about Dr. Bawumia. The election was about the party as a whole, and it was external factors that affected our chances,” he added.

ECG requires ₵600 million monthly to operate efficiently – Former MD

0

The former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has revealed that the company needs approximately ₵600 million each month to operate efficiently.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Pulse, Mr Mahama explained that ECG is facing significant financial challenges and is essentially operating on a “hand-to-mouth” basis.

Despite the increasing demand for services such as new meters and service connections, he noted that the company struggles to meet these needs due to a lack of sufficient funds.

Mr Mahama also emphasised that ECG cannot borrow money from banks as it is restricted under the Public Financial Management (PFM) Act, which requires the company to obtain proper clearance before taking on any debt. “ECG cannot simply go to the bank and borrow money,” he explained. “We need proper clearance, and that is a limitation we have to work with.”

Addressing the issue of the cash waterfall system, which has been a point of discussion, Mr Mahama warned that full compliance with this mechanism would worsen ECG’s financial difficulties.

He stated, “Even if we follow the cash waterfall mechanism, it will only add to the financial constraints we are already facing.”

He further noted that the company is already burdened with substantial financial obligations, particularly to banks, and the costs associated with collecting payments continue to strain ECG’s resources. When the proposal for a single collection account was introduced, ECG was already heavily indebted to banks, further complicating the financial situation.

Mr Mahama stressed the importance of understanding the broader financial picture of ECG and urged the public not to oversimplify the company’s challenges by attributing them to claims of under-performance or under-declaring revenue by GH₵1.1 million.

“We must look at the bigger picture and recognise the broader financial difficulties the company is facing,” he concluded.

Kumasi residents urge government to provide good business climate for businesses

0

By Florence Afriyie Mensah

Kumasi, Jan. 16, GNA – Some traders in Kumasi, Ghana’s commercial hub, are appealing to the government to give a priority to initiatives that will provide the requisite incentives to ensure resilient and a thriving business environment.

According to them the cost of doing business in the country was too high, arguing that from payments of duty to taxes, those factors did not inure to the benefit of the economy.

“The cumbersome import duties, inflation, exchange rate, e-levy, emission tax, and COVID-19 tax should be critically looked at,” Mr Michael Amponsah, Executive Member, Central Market Traders Association, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), in an interview in Kumasi.

The GNA has been sampling the views and expectations of the business community, as well as the economic outlook from the perspective of analysts, as the new government, led by President John Mahama, gets to work.

The recent nomination of Dr Casiel Ato Forson, a tax administration expert, as the Finance Minister, has also set the stage for what is anticipated to be the beginning of major economic reforms under the new administration.

Ghana’s economy went through a turbulent economic situation in the post-COVID 19 era, making the country to seek a US$3 billion IMF bailout.

With a stable multi-party government that is committed to market liberalisation, some analysts believe the country has what it takes to become the most attractive locations for doing business in the sub-Saharan Africa.

Mr Amponsah therefore urged the government to focus on implementing policies that would reduce the general cost of doing business in the country, while promoting investor confidence.

Data from the Ghana Investment Promotion Center (GIPC) shows that the country recorded one of its lowest foreign direct investments (FDI) of US$649.58 million in 2023.

This is about 55 percent drop from the previous year, which was at US$1.47 billion.

Meanwhile, Dr Dominic Frimpong, an economist and development planner, commenting on the stalled Krofrom and Kejetia/Central Market Second Phase Redevelopment Projects in Kumasi, described the situation as worrying.

“We are looking at two strategic projects, which have the potential to generate substantial investment and revenue for the government,” he told the GNA.

“For a country with all the pegs that make Ghana an attractive destination for FDI, it is a concern that the leadership is unable to do the right things to attract investment, particularly into areas of agribusiness and the industry sector.

We can fill the O2 Arena if we come together

Ghanaian musician and rapper, Kwesi Arthur, has shared his thoughts on the possibility of Ghanaian acts, including him, selling out the O2 Arena in the UK.

In an interview with GHOne TV, Arthur expressed his desire to host a show there in the future but explained that his current goal is to build his career gradually.

“It’ll be great to fill it up. But with how I’m moving, it’s my intention to build gradually. Now, it’s not the time for me to do that yet. I’m still building, and when the time is right, I’m going to do it,” he said.

He, however, stated that a combination of Ghanaian acts together can fill up the prestigious venue.

“Ghanaians have the ability to do that. If we all come together, (we can) possibly do a show there,” he added.

When asked if he feels pressured by the idea of selling out such a venue, Arthur responded confidently, “Nah, not at all. It’s not what I think on a daily. I don’t think of that much.”

The conversation about filling the O2 Arena was reignited in 2024 after rapper Medikal’s successful sold-out concert at the 2,800-seater Indigo O2 in the UK on May 3, 2024.

The event’s triumph has sparked discussions within the industry about the feasibility of Ghanaian artistes hosting concerts at larger venues like the 20,000-seater O2 Arena.

The President of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Wepia Awal Adugwala, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to render the needed support to smallholder farmers to improve their works.

He noted that an improvement in the works of smallholder farmers would go a long way to help improve the country’s agriculture sector.

Speaking in an interview, President of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Wepia Awal Adugwala, noted that the agriculture sector generates greater income for Ghana’s economic growth and must be looked at consciously.

As an Association, Adugwala declared their readiness to support the 24-Hour Economy initiative by the current administration for the betterment of the agric sector and the country as a whole.

“Smallholder farmers’ involvement in the 24-Hour Economy policy will be the provision of raw materials for the agro-based industries,” Adugwala noted.

He underscored the need for small holder farmers to be at the centre of the 24-hour initiative implementation to make it a success.

The Peasant Farmers Association Ghana President charged President Mahama and the yet to be announced Minister of Food and Agriculture to ensure that farming inputs are directly distributed to farmers’ groups, rather than through party boys.

“We shall be very happy if the incoming Minister of Food and Agriculture collaborates with smallholder farmers to help enhance the agriculture sector. The minister must collaborate with identifiable farmer associations for the benefit of the agric sector,” he disclosed.

In addressing the early drought in the northern regions, Wepia Awal Adugwala charged President John Dramani Mahama to continue to improve the One Village One Dam initiative by the previous administration for the purpose of improving the agriculture sector.

“The Pwalugu multi purpose dam is dear to our heart as an association, and we are, therefore, pleading with President Mahama to ensure its successful implementation,” he pleaded.

Adugwala also pleaded with President Mahama to intensify the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) across the country to help sustain the numerous farms and also protect water bodies in the country.

According to the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana president, it would be very important that the government introduces a tax relief on importation of all farming inputs to help promote the agriculture sector.

Sudan’s army chief orders probe into alleged killings

The Sudanese military has achieved a major victory by recapturing Wad Madani The Sudanese military has achieved a major victory by recapturing Wad Madani

Sudan’s army chief has ordered an investigation into allegations that his troops carried out widespread atrocities after recapturing the capital of Gezira state from their paramilitary rivals.

Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s move comes after widespread concern that civilians – including foreign nationals – were killed after the seizure of Wad Madani.

Neighbouring South Sudan said on Wednesday that it had summoned Sudan’s ambassador to protest against “the loss of lives among our innocent citizens”.

Sudan has been ravaged by war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Wad Madani, which is 87 miles (140km) south of the capital, Khartoum, fell to the RSF about a year ago. The military regained control of it on Saturday.

The city serves as a strategic crossroads, connecting several states through key supply highways. It is also the closest major town to Khartoum.

A Sudanese rights group accused the military of going on a rampage, killing at least 13 people in Camp Taiba, a village about 20km away.

The UN’s humanitarian chief in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, said she was deeply concerned about reports of retaliatory attacks against civilians in Gezira “based on alleged affiliation or ethnicity”.

The US special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello called the reports “appalling” and urged the army and allied groups to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.

Gen Burhan said he had set up a committee to investigate the alleged killings in Camp Taiba, and has asked it to report back within a week.

He did not comment about the concerns raised by South Sudan, and whether the investigation would focus on alleged atrocities elsewhere in Gezira.

South Sudan’s foreign ministry said that it had received a “comprehensive report” from its embassy in Sudan “detailing the unfortunate events that have resulted in the loss of lives among our innocent citizens, who maintain a non-combatant status”.

The military has previously accused the RSF of hiring South Sudanese as “mercenaries” to fight on its side.

Social media videos of various incidents, including one showing a man in civilian clothing being thrown over a bridge and then shot at by a group of men, have been widely shared online.

BBC Verify has confirmed the video was filmed along the Hantoub bridge over the Blue Nile river.

We have matched key elements in the video including the railings and the painting on the railings as seen in the video to earlier videos filmed at the bridge.

One of the men involved in the incident, and who is carrying a Sudanese flag, is wearing clothing with a logo used by the al-Bara’a bin Malik Brigade which has been fighting alongside the Sudanese army in Khartoum and neighbouring states.

Two other videos filmed elsewhere show at least 30 bodies of men in civilian clothing laid out on a ground next to a wall.

BBC Verify has established, through matching objects seen in the video with satellite imagery, that the videos were filmed at a location north-west of Wad Madani just a few metres from where the army appears to have ambushed RSF fighters.

It is not clear how the men died and whether they were killed before the bodies were gathered there.

It is also not possible to identify them nor whether they were affiliated to any of the fighting parties, as it is common for armed fighters not to wear uniforms.

Videos of the ambush, heavy exchange of fire, and the aftermath are also circulating.

The Sudanese armed forces on Tuesday condemned what it called “individual violations” in some parts of Gezira state, and promised that those responsible would be held accountable.

Both sides have been accused of atrocities in the 20-month-long conflict.

The RSF was itself accused of carrying out retaliatory attacks in Gezira following the defection of their commander Abu Aqla Kaikal in October last year.

Kaikal was heavily involved in the operation that led to the army wrestling back control of Wad Madani.

Trouble Looms As Cheddar Takes His Fight To Kennedy Agyapong’s Doorstep

0

Ghana’s political landscape is abuzz, and at the center of it all is Freedom Jacob Caesar, widely known as Cheddar. The presidential hopeful for the New Force Movement has emerged as a bold critic of corruption and political greed, recently directing sharp accusations at some of the country’s most prominent politicians, including Kennedy Agyapong.

In an interview with Daily Graphic, Cheddar openly condemned politicians who misuse state resources for personal gain. “Calling yourself successful while stealing your country’s money is disgraceful,” he stated emphatically, expressing his discontent with a system that, in his view, undermines genuine entrepreneurship.

Cheddar’s unfiltered remarks have sparked mixed reactions across the nation. Many see him as a much-needed disruptor challenging the political establishment, while others, particularly those aligned with entrenched political figures, view him as a disruptive force. These tensions intensified after allegations surfaced claiming that Cheddar owes over 7 million Ghana cedis in unpaid taxes.

Responding to the accusations in a viral video, Cheddar vehemently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the claims as a smear campaign orchestrated by his political opponents. “There are people in government trying to tarnish my name, but they won’t stop me,” he declared, reaffirming his determination to lead Ghana.

This brewing confrontation between Cheddar and influential figures like Kennedy Agyapong symbolizes the growing discontent among Ghanaians, particularly the youth, who are demanding leadership that prioritizes national progress over personal enrichment.

As Cheddar continues to position himself as a revolutionary leader, his vision and rhetoric are gaining momentum. Whether this will translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Freedom Jacob Caesar is determined to reshape Ghana’s political narrative.
