Accra, Feb. 16, GNA – The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, has launched a four-day Cholera Vaccination Campaign to curb the spread of the disease and sensitise the public to maintain environmental and personal hygiene.
The house-to-house vaccination exercise, from February 14 -17, seeks to ensure the vaccination of at-risk populations against the disease to stop the increasing number of cholera cases in the country.
Children aged one year and above, as well as adults, qualify to take the oral vaccine to ensure their protection.
The cholera outbreak, which hit Ghana in October 2024, has spread to five regions; Greater Accra, Central, Western, Eastern, and Ashanti.
Data from the latest Cholera Situational Report (SITREP) reveals that 5,527 suspected cholera cases have, so far, been recorded in the five regions with a Case Fatality Rate of 1.2 per cent.
Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, who launched the campaign at Mamprobi in the Ablekuma South Constituency in Accra, said the outbreak had been attributed to poor hygiene practices and sanitation problems and urged the public to adopt good practices to curb the transmission.
He said: “Cholera is a water and sanitation problem. It is clearly cleanliness. And therefore, if we don’t tackle it from that angle, we will continue to be at the receiving end.”
”So, with the greatest of respect, let us endeavor to keep our environment clean. That is the only way we can prevent this particular disease,” he added.
Mr Akandoh assured of the Ministry’s collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government to undertake appropriate measures to curb the cholera outbreak.
He advised the public to, however, look out for symptoms of the disease, which include frequent diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, along with abdominal cramps, fever, headache, fatigue, dry mouth and throat, and decreased urine output.
“We in the Ministry of Health have dedicated ourselves to containing the disease. All the test kits and medications are available to treat. But then, if you also don’t report on time, that’s when we begin to record the deaths,” he stated.
Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, said the vaccine was not to replace other preventive measures and urged the public to go back to the hand hygiene practice.
He commended healthcare professionals for their sacrifices and commitment to treating patients at the expense of their lives.
Dr Frank Lule, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, commended the Health Minister on his appointment and assured him of the Organisation’s commitment to finding permanent solutions to “chase cholera out.”
Present at the event were Mr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, queenmothers, and district health directors.
The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has vowed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will be held accountable for alleged corruption during his tenure.
Speaking in a viral video in circulation on X formerly Twitter, Mr Asiedu Nketia insisted that no official implicated in corruption would escape justice, regardless of their current whereabouts.
“Wherever Ken Ofori-Atta is hiding, they’d get him to answer questions on the cases of corruption against him. He will come. All of them, every crime they have committed, they would account,” he stated.
His comment comes after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially declared the former Finance Minister a fugitive in connection with ongoing corruption investigations.
However, the Minority in Parliament has strongly opposed the description, condemning the OSP’s action as politically motivated.
General has spoken so just count it done. Hon Johnson Asiedu Nketiah will get Ken Ofori-Atta to submit himself to the laws very soon. pic.twitter.com/P36V07jOQa
According to them, the move is an attempt to tarnish Mr Ofori-Atta’s reputation.
Meanwhile, his lawyers have clarified that he is currently out of the country seeking medical care, urging authorities to refrain from misrepresenting his situation.
However, Mr Nketia assured Ghanaians that the current administration remains committed to enforcing strict accountability measures, even among its members.
“We will tighten the noose on accountability, and even elements within this government who engage in corrupt activities will not go scot-free,” he added.

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has established a committee to investigate procurement activities carried out by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) during the Akufo-Addo administration.
According to Jinapor, ECG engaged in “frivolous procurements,” leading to significant financial losses. He revealed that approximately 3,000 ECG containers are currently stranded at the ports, accumulating demurrage costs estimated at GHS 1.5 billion.
“It’s all because they are engaged in what I call very frivolous procurements. Now, they have about 3,000 containers stuck at the ports, generating demurrage of about GHS 1.5 billion, which is very unacceptable. Some of the things they’ve procured will last them ten years, some will even expire in five years,” Jinapor stated in an interview on TV3.
To address these concerns, he confirmed that a committee has been set up to investigate ECG’s procurement activities and the financial burden caused by the stranded containers.
“So we’ve commissioned a committee to investigate ECG’s procurements and the cost of these containers stuck at the ports. The committee is doing a very good job,” he added.
Jinapor further disclosed that, based on the preliminary findings, former ECG managers failed to adhere to proper procurement processes and guidelines.
“So far, the preliminary reports I have gotten indicate that there’s massive rot at ECG.”
In response to these findings, the Minister announced plans for a broader audit of the energy sector, including a human resource and technical review.
“But beyond that, there will be another technical report. What the PwC has done is a financial audit. We want to do a human resource audit, a deeper audit of the entire energy sector, which will then give us a clear picture of the inefficiencies so that we can tailor that in terms of our policy objective and policy directive to address this.”
With these initiatives, the Ministry aims to uncover inefficiencies and implement strategic policies to enhance the energy sector’s performance.

President John Dramani Mahama has charged African Heads of State to ensure tax compliance as a key measure to address the continent’s substantial financing gap.
While delivering his keynote address as Champion on African Union Financial Institutions at the Heads of State and Government breakfast dialogue at the AU Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 16, he highlighted the estimated $402 billion annual financing gap facing Africa until 2030.
“Addressing the financial gap requires a multifaceted approach. Domestic resource mobilization is crucial for improving tax administration, combating illicit financial flows and encouraging the culture of tax compliance,” Mahama said.
John Mahama also pointed out other challenges Africa faces, including climate crises, geopolitical tensions, and diseases, which threaten the continent’s growth and sustainable development.
He stressed the importance of strategic investments in key sectors like health, education, energy, and technology, acknowledging the substantial financing gap for these investments to deal with these challenges.
“This financing gap is not merely a statistic. It represents the unrealized potential of millions of Africans whose dream for a better life depends on our ability to invest wisely in infrastructure, education, technology, and health.”
On her part, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, called on African leaders to reduce their appetite for borrowing and rather find innovative ways to attract and sustain investments into the continent.
“We must take advantage of investment that comes to Africa and be able to sustain them for our own development,” she said.
She indicated that the continent could raise funding through value addition to natural resources, tapping into pension funds to raise patient capital to fund development.

Ever wondered why business mogul and one of Ghana’s wealthiest people, Ibrahim Mahama, is so down-to-earth and ensures he chit-chats with anyone, anywhere? Well, he has a simple rule of life that guides him.
In a 2019 video that has resurfaced online, Ibrahim Mahama explained that he engages in conversations with both familiar faces and new acquaintances because he believes that no one can predict another person’s future. Therefore, it is important to treat everyone with respect.
Based on this principle, he tries his possible best to establish a positive relationship with all.
Ibrahim Mahama, who was standing in front of a congregation in a yet-to-be-identified church, entreated members to relate well with each other as their fellows could be their “destiny helpers.”
He urged the members to leverage their strengths and capabilities and help others whose weaknesses are glaring when they have the ability to do so.
The business mogul, while addressing the congregation, said, “A piece of advice; when you see anybody anywhere, say hello, how are you, how is work, how is family, what do you do? Process that in your mind because you will never know when you will need that person.
“Don’t let us just come to church and pray. God has put us together for better things. Everybody has his strengths and weaknesses, so when your brother has a weakness, you shore him up. And I will tell you this because that has really helped me. Because anybody that I meet, some people I don’t know, some people I don’t remember, but even when you stop me and talk to me, I’ll say how are you, how is everything, how is your family, what do you do? I work in this…,” he added.
He also said that “I worked with this gentleman here. He used to pay me, but he used to delay my payment. But in that link, he was very good to me, and I didn’t know how close he was with Uncle Seth.”
Ibrahim Mahama is a renowned Ghanaian businessman and the founder of Engineers and Planners, the largest indigenously-owned mining company in West Africa.
He also owns several other businesses in Ghana.
Mahama established Engineers and Planners in 1997 after returning from London. The company now employs over 3,000 Ghanaians.
Additionally, he has invested in Asutsuare Poultry Farms, which he started in 2004. The farm produces 150,000 eggs and 10,000 live broilers daily.
Ibrahim Mahama is also the CEO of Dzata Cement Company Limited, a fully Ghanaian-owned cement processing factory in Tema.
The factory’s construction began in 2011, with operations starting in 2018, creating 1,200 direct jobs.
Its production capacity is projected to reach 2 million metric tons of cement annually.

It is laughable that in 2025 some people from other countries still want to rob Ghana off the credit for birthing highlife music.
An interview that Nigerian artiste Yemi Alade had with CNN’s Larry Madowo about three months ago has goaded me to write this piece.
A comment Yemi made in that interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, claiming highlife did not originate only in Ghana but also in Nigeria, reeks of ignorance if not for ill agenda.
While talking about how successful her song ‘Johnny’ was, Larry Madowo made reference to the highlife elements in that song, crediting the genre’s origin to Ghana.
Obviously unenthused about that, Yemi Alade retorted: “you said first of all that highlife is originally Ghanaian? We have to talk about that. I grew up at a time in Nigeria when highlife was a big deal. And as far as I know, Nigeria, Ghana etc we have already been connected via music and everything so I feel like it originated in both Nigeria and Ghana.”
On the SAY IT LOUD segment on Showbiz A-Z aired on Saturday, February 15, 2025, I highlighted some historical facts about when highlife started in Ghana and when it got to Nigeria. Maybe Yemi Alade hasn’t learnt her history well. For someone born in 1989, maybe she thought highlife started around the time she claims “highlife was a big deal” in Nigeria.
This is not the first time citizens of other countries have tried to claim ownership of highlife. Some Liberians have also tried but to no avail.
Ghanaian ethnomusicologist Professor John Collins has spoken about how he had to school some Nigerians who made same claim during a conference in Nigeria, years ago.
Evidence that highlife, an evolved version of indigenous Ghanaian sounds Osibisaba and Adaha which emerged in the early 1920s, is of Ghanaian origin abound. Highlife got to Nigeria around 1937. In Professor John Collins’ book Highlife Time 3, he writes in Chapter 47: “Nigeria is now a major centre for highlife. However, the music was introduced to the country from Ghana in variety of ways. At first, through the diffusion of the kokomba highlife, and 1937 Nigerian tour of the Cape Coast Sugar Babies Orchestra. Later came the 1950s records EK Nyame and Onyina’s guitar band and most importantly the early 50s tours of the Ghanaian Tempos band.”
The book also reveals that the jazzy style of highlife of ET Mensah’s dance band was copied by most Nigerian band leaders like Victor Olaiya, Bobby Benson, Rex Lawson and EC Arinze, who had earlier been playing versions of calypso and rumba.
This was way before the likes of Abirekyireba Kofi Sammy, King Bruce, Jerry Hansen, Nana Kwame Ampadu and others went to Nigeria to ply their highlife trades.
The Kumasi Trio led by Jacob Sam (Kwame Asare) recorded the first Ghanaian highlife song, ‘Yaa Amponsah’, as early as 1928 when highlife had not gotten to Nigerian yet. The song was recorded in London on the Zonophone label.
It will be wrong to say Ghana is the only country that performs highlife. Countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria also do highlife. However, the fact that highlife originated from Ghana is incontrovertible.
Last year, I had an interview with Professor John Collins on Joy FM‘s Showbiz A-Z about claims by some Liberians that because the Kru sailors from Liberia taught some of our Ghanaian musicians the two finger picking technique of the guitar playing, they started highlife.
In his response, he said: “it [Liberian guitar style] wasn’t highlife. The Kru people did develop distinct ways of playing the guitar on the high seas in the 19th century. Krus were recruited on board a lot of sailing ships by the Europeans and Americans. So they picked up the guitar but they didn’t use the Spanish way of picking the strings. They used the typical African one like how King Ayisoba or other Africans play the lute. It’s a two finger technique; and that’s what the Kru people spread down the African coast but it wasn’t highlife.”
According to him, this guitar-playing style was just a single element of highlife which in Ghana was absorbed into a music type called ‘osibisaba.’ In Sierra Leone they fused it into the Maringa style, while in Nigeria it found a place in juju and native blues.
“So we say that the Kru people didn’t invent highlife but they created a very important ingredient of highlife which is a specific way of playing a guitar. They introduced it to Ghana around about the 1900s, but when the Ghanaians got hold of this style, they also developed their owns styles such as Yaa Amponsah, Odonson and so on. So this is what happened. It is not that the Liberians invented highlife,” Professor John Collins added.
He further noted that because in those days there were no colonial borders, the fisher folk moved between countries so there was a lot of ethnic blending going on in West Africa. The Kru people would settle in Ghana around the Light House in Accra, or Ghanaians would go to Nigeria and vice versa.
Professor John Collins – Ethnomusicologist, lecturer
Famed Nigeria actor Pete Edochie is on record to have acknowledged Ghana as the sole originator of highlife.
“All this music originated from Ghana. Why? In Nigeria, the popular genre of music was highlife. Where did highlife come from? Ghana! This is where it originated!” he said a video.
Ghanaians discovered highlife. We named it and sold it to the world. Ghana’s Highlife spread to other West African countries through tours and trade. Ghanaians took highlife to Nigeria. Some Nigerians even came to Ghana to learn our sounds. Fela Kuti spent time in Ghana learning about our highlife music, developing it into Afrobeat.
In his biography titled ‘Fela: This Bitch of a Life’, he writes that one day while in a club in Accra, he thought about how to bring out something different other than what James Brown did.
“I must clear myself from this mess. I must identify myself with Africa. Then I’ll have an identity,” he writes.
He added that there was a Ghanaian-Nigerian friend, called Raymond Aziz, sitting by him on that day at the club. He asked him: “Raymond, you see that my music? I must give it a name oo, a real African name that is catchy. I’ve been looking for names to give it. And I’ve been thinking of calling it Afrobeat.”
After Raymond endorsed the name, he flew with it.
Ghana has been the fulcrum of Africa’s music but we always lose out on things spawned from our country. This is why an Afrobeats documentary by a Nigerian will not acknowledge that the word ‘Afrobeats’ (with the “s”) was first used by a Ghanaian DJ in the United Kingdom called DJ Abrantie.
On July 5, 2022, one of Nigeria’s top music journalists, Joey Akan, confirmed on X (then Twitter): “Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat was coined in Ghana. Our generation’s Afrobeat was coined by a Ghanaian.”
While a lot of us admire the proactive and smart nature of Nigerians, it has always been unfair on the part of some of them to arrogate to themselves creations that are not theirs, just like Yemi Alade and some of her ilk are trying to do with the highlife story.
Nigeria wants to claim everything we started to the extent that they now claim they own Detty December, too.
But I know where Yemi Alade is headed with her claim. They are doing this so that United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) will co-list Ghana and Nigeria as originator of highlife.
I am reliably informed that some Nigerians are making moves to petition UNESCO to be made co-owners of the highlife genre. This should not happen. We can’t change history. We will not do that! Nigeria never originated highlife. Not even Liberia whose Kru sailors spread the two finger picking technique to Ghana and other West African countries.
The Ghana Culture Forum, the National Folklore Board, Ghana’s Commission on UNESCO, Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and Ghana Music Alliance should not let this slide. This agenda should not be allowed to thrive.
I understand the necessary documentation for the listing process as requested by UNESCO has been submitted. Hopefully, it gets listed this year.
Highlife originated in Ghana by Ghanaians; any other country that also performs the genre, copied from Ghana.

Frank Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as ‘Appiah Stadium’
A staunch supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Frank Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as ‘Appiah Stadium’, has publicly expressed his desire to secure an appointment as head of security in an oil and gas company in Ghana.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Appiah Stadium stated that whenever he visits Accra, he seeks an opportunity to meet with former President John Dramani Mahama to remind him of his aspirations to serve in his government.
“Whenever I come to Accra, I want to get close to the President to remind him, in case there is a vacancy, so he remembers me for an appointment. Recently, I went to the Jubilee House because the President asked me to see him. I walked with him to his car before he drove off alongside the Vice President, and I engaged in a chat with him.
“I want to either get an appointment at Ghana Gas or as head of security in the oil and gas sector. If I don’t get an appointment, people will mock me because of my closeness to him. I want to be appointed because of the sacrifices I have made. If I were living with him in the Jubilee House, it wouldn’t be news because of my close association with him,” he said in a recent interview on Royal TV on February 11, 2025.
Appiah Stadium reiterated his admiration for Mahama but maintained that he was pursuing an appointment to justify his long-time loyalty.
“Mahama is a good person, but as I have said before, even if I had the opportunity to meet him every day, I wouldn’t do that.
“People are watching me and asking what I have gained from all my support. So, if I don’t get closer to him, I won’t get my share of the cake,” he added.

The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has strongly condemned the recent spate of attacks on travellers along the Bolga-Walewale-Tamale Highway and the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakoom Highway in the North East and Upper East regions.
The association has described these violent incidents as both morally reprehensible and religiously unacceptable, calling on those responsible to halt the attacks immediately and allow peace to prevail.
In a statement released by MAYA, the group not only denounced the actions of the perpetrators but also criticised the military’s handling of the situation, accusing them of unprofessional conduct and the brutalisation of innocent community members.
According to the association, civilians who are already enduring emotional and psychological distress due to the ongoing insecurity should not be subjected to further inhumane treatment.
They argue that such military actions will only escalate tensions rather than resolve the crisis.
MAYA said for the past three years, numerous attacks on vehicles travelling along the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakoom Highway, particularly in the Binduri and Pusiga districts, have led to tragic loss of lives and destruction of property.
The association noted that three separate attacks have been carried out since President John Dramani Mahama took office, all of which specifically targeted vehicles under military escort. Despite this, no curfews have been imposed in those areas, raising concerns about a perceived disparity in security responses.
The association further criticised what it described as the “unfair and excessive” security measures being implemented in the North East Region, particularly in the Walewale enclave.
MAYA expressed concern over what it says are the indiscriminate brutalities being inflicted on innocent community members while the perpetrators of the highway attacks remain at large.
They stressed that imposing a curfew on Walewale and its environs was a “lazy approach” to addressing the problem and called on authorities to treat the people of Walewale fairly.
MAYA also confirmed that the military’s excessive force had resulted in the tragic death of a young man who had no involvement in the incidents, while several others sustained life-threatening injuries.
The association called on authorities to ensure justice for the affected communities and implement measures that prioritise the protection and well-being of all citizens.
Additionally, MAYA urged the government to immediately halt the ongoing military operations and handle matters relating to the Bawku chieftaincy conflict with neutrality and fairness to prevent further escalation. The association also appealed to the youth to exercise restraint and remain law-abiding during these difficult times.
The Mamprugu Youth Association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for peace, justice, and security in the region, and called for dialogue, fairness, and a strategic approach to addressing the security challenges in the area to ensure lasting peace and stability.

The Head Coach of Medeama FC, Ibrahim Tanko, has expressed dissatisfaction with how some fans express passion in the Ghana Premier League.
In an interview with 3 Sports, shared on social media on February 16, 2025, Ibrahim Tanko noted that some fans in the Ghana Premier League do not understand the game side of football.
He emphasised that some fans treat football in the country as a life-and-death affair, hence there should be mass education in the GPL by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
“We take the football game like it’s life and death, and I don’t understand because football is a sport where you can win, lose, or draw. If you play an away game in some club venues, they want to win by all means. I think the education must be more in the clubs. In Germany, the supporters know what they want, but that is not the case in Ghana,” he said.
Ibrahim Tanko further noted that the security personnel provided to protect players and football officials are mostly idle when there is chaos.
“Most of the time, if you go to football venues, you would see a policeman sitting and watching his phone throughout the 90 minutes. He is not concentrating on guiding people. I think they should be professional in protecting referees, fans, and players so that we would have peace in our game,” he added.
Ibrahim Tanko’s comment comes in response to an Asante Kotoko supporter who was stabbed during a game against Nsoatreman on February 2, 2025.

A video showing TikTok creator Khaby Lame talking has surfaced online – and people are in shock.
Italian-Senegalese content creator Lame has built a rather large following on social media through a simple trick…not uttering a single word in his videos. In fact, the premise of most of his videos are pretty simple: stitch an overly complicated ‘life hack’ video and perform said advice in a much simpler manner, topping it all off with a signature hand gesture.
Khaby Lame has built a huge career off of TikTok (Samir Hussein/WireImage)
Now filming content without uttering a single word may sound a little dull on paper, but it’s a move which has worked wonders for the 24-year-old’s career. Lame is one of the most followed creators on TikTok and has collaborated with the likes of Hugo Boss, Fortnite and even silently interviewed Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx for their most recent film, Back in Action.
But none of this answers our main question – what does Khaby Lame’s voice actually sound like?
Search hard enough online, and there are a number of clips showing the 24-year-old speaking, mostly in interviews or in other creators’ content.
And his voice appears to have left fans speechless.
A clip shared by Sports Centre on X showed Lame alongside US creator Druski in a celebrity All-Star basketball game where he delivers a very brief and straight-to-the-point speech to rouse the players.
“Let’s win guys,” he tells the team, proving that he is certainly a man of few words.
The three words were enough to leave viewers ‘in shock’, with many revealing this was the first time they’d ever heard the content creator speak.
“This the first time i heard him utter a sound,” one person commented, while a second penned: “Was that khaby’s voice?”
The surprise didn’t end there either, with a third fan joking: “I see why he don’t talk.”
“I have never heard his voice before,” a fourth added.
This isn’t the first time Lame’s voice has been heard on camera, with the influencer giving a number of interviews over the years, including one in Italian for Hugo Boss back in 2023.
The content creator’s voice could briefly be heard in the clip (X/@SportsCenter)
As for the reason why Lame famously chooses not to speak in the majority of his videos, he previously explained that the idea came after brainstorming a way to add ‘simplicity’ to his videos.
“I came up with the idea because I was seeing these videos circulating, and I liked the idea of bringing some simplicity to it,” he told CNN (via Capital).
“The type of gesture came by chance, but the silence didn’t. I thought of a way to reach as many people as possible. And the best way was not to speak.”

The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding officials of the previous administration accountable for alleged corruption.
His remarks emphasize the NDC government’s unwavering stance on accountability, a key campaign promise in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
In a video circulating on social media and sighted by Citinewsroom on Sunday, February 16, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah declared that former officials of the Akufo-Addo administration, including ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, will not evade scrutiny.
“Wherever Ken Ofori-Atta is hiding, we will find him by all means. He must avail himself for questioning on multiple cases. All former officials implicated in corruption will be compelled to face the law,” he asserted.
He further emphasized that the government will enforce strict accountability measures, even within its own ranks, ensuring that no official—past or present—escapes justice if found guilty of corruption.
“We will tighten the noose on accountability, and even elements within this government who engage in corrupt activities will not go scot-free,” he added.

Critics watch closely to see how these promises of accountability and anti-corruption enforcement unfolds under the NDC government as already 2,417 complaints of suspected corruption have been submitted to the Attorney General for investigations.
The complaints, which were gathered from the public in response to the Operation Recover All Loot(ORAL) call for the public to report suspected corruption cases, were officially handed over to the president at the Jubilee House.
Online portal, News Ghana, has retracted a recent misleading news report authored against Justina Nelson, the acting CEO of Minerals Income & Investment Fund (MIIF), and rendered an unqualified apology for any reputational damages caused.
News Ghana recently published an article titled ‘US$60M Scandal Rocks Ghana’s Mining Sector’, which contained several unsubstantiated allegations against MIFF and the recently appointed CEO of the Fund.
According to the portal, upon further review they discovered their allegations were ‘inaccurate and misleading’.
“Our reporting did not fully reflect the facts and may have unfairly misrepresented her actions and intentions,” they said. “We deeply regret any distress or reputational harm this publication may have caused Ms. Nelson,”
Justina Nelson has been facing a series of fabricated and somewhat politically motivated hit pieces in various Ghanaian newspapers and media portals, following the recent announcement of an investigation into the Fund by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The investigation, largely targeted at dealings that occurred under the leadership of former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, was in relation to payments made to Agyapa Royalties Limited, Small Scale Mining Incubation Programme (SSMIP), Quarry Value Addition Programme (QVAP) and Asante Gold Corporation.
These unsubstantiated publications sought to smear the acting CEO with the sins of the past administration, and like the News Ghana report, were a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the new MIIF CEO.
News Ghana, in their retraction and apology, noted that claims Justina Nelson had illegally moved money around at MIIF were not the true reflection of what transpired.
“We acknowledge that Ms. Nelson acted within the law per her response to the request made by the whistleblower and that our reporting failed to provide a balanced and objective account of the situation,” News Ghana wrote.
“We sincerely apologize for any confusion, misunderstanding, or damage our article may have caused to her and the Minerals Income and Investment Fund,”
Justina Nelson suffered irreparable harm due to the false allegations against her and an apology from News Ghana, while a step in the right direction, is only the tip of the iceberg. Several other outlets ran the half-baked and malicious report, and any ethical journalists upon examining the facts should follow suit and retract and apologize to Nelson, who has only been in office at MIIF for a month and has so far, only carried out her duties with exemplary dedication, professionalism and with full adherence to the laws and constitution of Ghana and the laws governing MIIF.

The exercise took off at the Manya Krobo Senior High School in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, and was on the theme: ” Safe blood saves lives.”
The student donors were taken through a health checklist, including age, blood level, and weight to ensure health safety before donation, and after which they were provided with milk, milo, and other foods to replenish their blood.
Mr Ransford Gyan, the MTN Ghana Sales Manager for Eastern, Volta, and Oti Regions, told the Ghana News Agency that the Foundation had a target of about 6000 people partaking in the blood donation exercise across the 16 regions.
He said, ” It’s our belief that we will get the target set this year to assist in easing the county’s blood shortage.”
Donating blood is a benevolent act of solidarity, why don’t you join the effort and help save lives, he quizzed.
He said at the initial stage of the blood donation exercise introduced by the MTN Ghana Foundation, it was limited to the MTN staff but now opened up to the society.
Ms Philomina Quayson, Eastern Regional Blood Bank Donor Organiser at the Regional Hospital, said, “Blood is an essential commodity in the hospital because it helps patients who have accidents, surgeries, or medical conditions. So, I encouraged individuals to save lives by visiting any government hospitals to donate blood.”
She said persons 17 years and above, who are free from health conditions such as sickle cell and hypertension could donate.
She urged the public to donate blood as it was good and safe.
Master Kingsley Nartey, a student of Manya Krobo Senior High School, said, “Today is my first time to participate in this exercise and I was panicking but after going through the processes, I realized it was not painful and scary.”
Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on African policymakers to adopt a forward-thinking approach that embraces technology and innovation as key drivers of economic transformation.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com, he made these remarks while speaking at the 27th Annual Conference of ‘Beyond Borders: A Myth or a Mandate for Africa’s Progress’? at Harvard University in Boston.
Dr. Bawumia emphasised the critical role of digitalization in accelerating Africa’s development and helping the continent overcome its challenges.
“Policymakers must act with a mindset of possibilities. We should embrace technology and not be intimidated by it. We must believe that we can leapfrog advanced nations in many areas if we put our minds to it,” he stated.
He also spoke about Ghana’s evolving economic landscape, noting the country’s reliance on informal economic systems for over six decades following independence.
However, he pointed out that significant strides are being made toward building a formal, data-driven economy capable of competing in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Dr. Bawumia emphasised that the ongoing shift toward formalized systems and digital platforms is crucial for the country’s future economic prospects.
“Today, we are building formal systems and a database-driven economy to compete in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Our challenge is to use digitalization to solve current problems while laying the foundation for future jobs, leapfrogging from the Second to the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of technology-driven policies that not only address immediate economic challenges but also create sustainable jobs and position African economies to be globally competitive.

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Constituency, Sammi Awuku, has reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling all promises made to his constituents, despite the New Patriotic Party, losing the 2024 elections.
As part of his efforts to support local communities, Mr. Awuku has been facilitating a monthly trade initiative by providing free transportation for farmers to bring their produce from villages to the Ofie Market Square at the Amanokrom Durbar grounds.
Additionally, he has partnered with rural banks to offer soft loans to farmers and market women to help them expand their businesses.
In an interview with the media after the successful launch of the initiative, Mr. Awuku pledged to personally cover 25 percent of the 30 percent interest on the soft loans provided to the farmers and traders.
Looking ahead, Mr. Awuku plans to launch a Teacher’s and Nurse’s Fund by mid-year, following productive discussions with the Education and Health Directorates. He is optimistic that this fund, which will provide seed capital for teachers and nurses, will encourage them to accept postings and remain in remote areas within the Constituency, thereby improving access to education and healthcare services.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the launch of Ofie Market at Amanokrom, Sammy Awuku pledged not to touch a penny of his MP’s common fund but to use it judiciously to help lift them from the shackles of poverty into prosperity.
“I told them that by the middle of the year, we will set up this fund so that they will also be able to assess some of the credit. That one is a seed fund given to the teachers and the health professionals.
“As an MP I have made a firm commitment that anything meant for the constituency as part of their common fund, I will not take a cedi for what is meant for them. I will also help them from the shackles of poverty to prosperity,” he stated.

Various associations under the National Health Students Association of Ghana have expressed profound disappointment and disillusionment with the 2022 administration’s blatant attempts to manipulate the association’s leadership. The administration’s actions, deemed utterly unacceptable, involved exploiting their positions to install their preferred candidates, thereby undermining the democratic process.
In a statement released by the presidents of the various associations under NAHSAG, they unequivocally dissociated themselves from the purportedly illegal election, affirming Ernest as the legitimate and rightful president of the association. They urged their members to rally behind him, citing their satisfaction with his exemplary leadership and commendable achievements.
The associations also drew attention to a court ruling that explicitly restrained the 2022 executives from conducting any elections, rendering their actions null and void. Despite the overwhelming support of health students for the current administration, the 2022 executives orchestrated an election with a paltry 20 students, brazenly attempting to impose their preferred candidates on the student body. Notably, all the candidates ran unopposed.
The National Associations, including the Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Students Association, Physician Assistants Students Association,University Nursing Students Association of Ghana,Federation of Ghana Medical Imaging Students Association,Ghana Association of Health Training Institutions,Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association Pharmaceutical Sciences Federation Ghana, among others, have unequivocally condemned the election, labeling it a flagrant disregard for democratic principles. They have called upon all members to rally behind the 2024/25 administration, led by Obama(Ernest), in a show of solidarity and support for legitimate leadership.

1,200 children under 15 diagnosed of cancer annually, according to the Ghana Health Service
GhanaWeb Feature by Joycelyn Kyei Baffuor
World Childhood Cancer Day, observed annually on February 15, serves as a global reminder of the struggles faced by children diagnosed with cancer and the stark disparities in survival rates between high- and low-income countries.
This year’s observance underscored the persistent challenges in Ghana, where limited access to care and financial barriers continue to claim young lives.
Childhood cancer remains a silent crisis, with approximately 400,000 new cases diagnosed globally each year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
While survival rates in high-income countries exceed 80%, in low-resource settings like Ghana, they plummet below 30% due to late diagnoses, inadequate treatment options, and crippling costs.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) identifies cancer as a critical public health challenge, with many cases detected at advanced stages, complicating treatment outcomes.
At this year’s World Cancer Day commemoration in Accra, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director General of the GHS, pointed out alarming statistics.
“In 2022, Ghana recorded 27,385 new cancer cases and 17,944 deaths. Prostate and liver cancers were leading causes of mortality, with liver cancer claiming 90% of those diagnosed. Childhood cancer remains devastating, with an estimated 1,200 children under 15 diagnosed annually.
“Leukemia, lymphoma, and retinoblastoma are common, yet treatment costs push care out of reach for families, leading to late diagnoses and poor survival rates,” he stated.
Financial barriers remain a major obstacle. Although Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) now partially covers childhood cancer treatment, families still shoulder significant expenses for chemotherapy, surgeries, and post-care.
Additional burdens like transportation and lost income due to caregiving further strain households.
The tragic case of 10-year-old Lisa Laryea, who lost her battle with leukemia on December 19, 2023, epitomized these systemic gaps.
Her family struggled to secure specialized care until philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama funded her $110,000 treatment in South Africa.
While her story galvanized national attention, her death underscored a harsh reality: countless Ghanaian children face similar fates without access to lifesaving resources.
To improve outcomes, advocates urge expanded NHIS coverage, increased government investment in pediatric oncology, and stronger public-private partnerships to subsidize care.
Although World Childhood Cancer Day has passed, its urgent call to action endures. Without sustained efforts to dismantle financial and systemic barriers, Ghana’s children will continue to lose their lives to a disease that is increasingly treatable, but only for those who can afford it.

Meanwhile, watch as Asiedu Nketiah breaks silence on the ‘uneasiness’ within the NDC and his ‘fight’ with Mahama
Former Manchester United scout, Mick Brown, claims Chelsea have identified Bournemouth forward, Antoine Semenyo, as a key target in their plans under new manager, Enzo Maresca.
Brown, who previously had doubts about Semenyo’s ability to succeed in the Premier League, now acknowledges the Ghanaian’s remarkable progress this season.
“I always had doubts about his ability at Premier League level, but he is one of the most improved players in the country this season. His strength, running power, shooting, and movement have come to light at Bournemouth. It doesn’t shock me to hear Chelsea are interested in him,” Brown said.
Since joining Bournemouth from Bristol City in January 2023, Semenyo has played a vital role in the Cherries’ campaign, drawing attention from top clubs.
Chelsea are reportedly leading the race for his signature as they look to strengthen their attacking options.
Bournemouth are expected to fight to keep their in-form forward, but a major offer from Chelsea could prove difficult to resist.
If the move materialises, it would mark a significant step in Semenyo’s career and provide Chelsea with the attacking dynamism they are seeking.

The RSF has been besieging the area for months, claiming that the camp is a base for the Joint Force
The Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has stepped up its attacks on the Zamzam refugee camp near el-Fasher, capital of the North Darfur state.
On Friday, residents and medics said the RSF attacked the camp, which it surrounded three times within a week.
At least seven people were killed in the camp this week, Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, said, adding that medics were unable to perform surgeries in Zamzam.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations secretary-general, said the renewed fighting included the use of heavy weapons and urged the warring parties to stop the violence.
The RSF is said to be trying to tighten its grip on its Darfur stronghold, losing ground to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the capital, Khartoum.
‘They terrorise’
Nearly 22 months since the war erupted in Sudan between the RSF and the SAF, the paramilitary group still controls most of Darfur in Sudan’s west and much of the neighbouring Kordofan region.
The army controls Sudan’s north and east and has recently made crucial gains in Khartoum.
Zamzam houses 500,000 people displaced by fighting in this and past wars in Darfur, while nearby el-Fasher is home to 1.8 million people and is the last significant holdout against the RSF across Darfur.
The RSF has been besieging the area for months, claiming that the camp is a base for the Joint Forces, former rebel groups now fighting alongside the army.
Some camp residents have burrowed holes into the ground for shelter and protection, fearing constant attacks, according to one resident and a video shared by activists.
“Inside the neighbourhoods, they terrorise, steal, and kill … people hide in these holes when they are firing and when they are raiding, because there is nowhere else to flee,” a resident of the camp told the Reuters news agency.
The top UN humanitarian official in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, said on Thursday she was “shocked by the attacks on Zamzam IDP camp and the blockages of escape routes”.
Aid restrictions
The RSF has also restricted aid efforts to the camp, according to the UN and aid workers.
In August, a UN-backed report found that it is plausible that parts of North Darfur – especially the Zamzam camp – are experiencing “the worst form of hunger”, known as IPC Phase 5.
IPC Phase 5 is a step in an internationally recognised Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) which indicates that at least one in five people or households severely lack food and face starvation and destitution, which would ultimately lead to critical levels of acute malnutrition and death.
After the latest violence, MSF said it had to stop a nutrition programme for 6,000 malnourished children.
Earlier this month, the group had announced that the proportion of the camp’s children who were malnourished had risen to 34 percent, a similar level to the nearby town of Tawila, to which many have fled from RSF attacks.
Speaking on Friday at a high-level humanitarian conference in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the situation in Sudan as a catastrophe on a “staggering scale and brutality”.
“We must do more – and do more now – to help the people of Sudan out of this nightmare,” he said, calling on world leaders to use their influence for peace and boost humanitarian aid efforts before the holy month of Ramadan, which begins in about 10 days.
A private legal practitioner Kwame Adofo has urged former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to take legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for what he describes as an unlawful declaration of him as a “fugitive from justice.”
Mr Adofo made these remarks during a discussion on Asaase Radio’s current affairs program, The Forum, on Saturday, February 15.
He criticized the OSP’s handling of high-profile cases, accusing the Special Prosecutor of overstepping his legal authority.
He argued that the OSP has no legal basis to declare someone a fugitive, especially when no formal charges have been filed against the individual.
“I cannot see what gives the OSP the power to declare somebody a fugitive from justice. This is wrong and should never have been done. Ken Ofori-Atta has not been charged with any offense, yet he has been publicly maligned. This is a serious ground for legal action,” Adofo stated.
He added, “I think Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers should consider suing the Special Prosecutor personally.”
Adofo also pointed to the OSP’s track record, citing the Cecilia Dapaah investigation, later dismissed by the courts, as evidence of incompetence. He argued that the Special Prosecutor’s approach to investigations is flawed and damages the institution’s credibility.
“What serious investigator announces an investigation before even starting? He did the same thing with the NPA case. When you do that, people hide evidence and obstruct investigations. This clearly shows incompetence, and he needs to be removed,” Adofo asserted.
He further questioned the Special Prosecutor’s performance since taking office in 2021, asking, “We are in 2025—can he account for his stewardship? Has he secured a single conviction in four years?”
Adofo called on the government to reevaluate the leadership of the OSP, stating that the current Special Prosecutor has failed to deliver on his mandate and should either resign or be removed from office.
“The OSP’s credibility is at stake, and the government must act to restore public trust in the institution,” he concluded.

Professor Ibrahim Yakubu Seini, Dean of the Department of Physical Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala has said no nation can develop without mathematics.
He explained that mathematics played a critical role in unlocking the potential in students and preparing them for opportunities for the future.
Professor Seini said this while delivering the 17th professorial inaugural lecture in fulfilment of his appointment as a Professor of Applied Mathematics in Tamale.
He said mathematics drove innovation and was key to addressing global challenges such as climate change, healthcare, and cyber security, among others.
“Mathematics opens numerous opportunities to students in virtually all fields of studies, its influence has expanded to areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning and climate science” he added.

Lawrence Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as Bullgod
Artiste manager Bullgod has expressed discontent over the criticism Apostle Solomon Oduro has faced after publicly revealing the news of his divorce from Rev. Charlotte Oduro.
In a discussion on United Showbiz on February 16, 2025, Bullgod urged netizens to cut Apostle Solomon Oduro some slack, emphasising that he particularly endured suffering during the marriage.
Bullgod insisted that the pastor should be seen as the victim, not Charlotte Oduro, pointing to videos circulating on social media in which Charlotte confessed to abusing her ex-husband.
“I don’t see any reason why a man of God like that would lie to the public… With all seriousness, what she did wasn’t right. For her to consistently go out there and wash their dirty linen in public… If the man had been the one to beat her, or done all that the woman did, Ghanaians would have dragged him,” he said.
Bullgod further explained that Apostle Solomon Oduro’s decision to publicly announce the divorce was not to tarnish Charlotte Oduro’s reputation, but rather a result of a lack of communication between the couple.
“If there had been some understanding between them, I think they would have issued a joint press statement. But because something was wrong, that is why he said that alone,” he added.
Bullgod also stated that if he had been in Apostle Solomon Oduro’s shoes, he would have retaliated to some of the physical confrontations from his wife.
“If I were the one she hit in the balls, I would have hit her back. If a woman can beat a man, then we can also conclude that a man can beat a woman. We can’t sit here while a man is being bullied. Hitting him doesn’t pain me as much as tarnishing his image in public,” he stated.
Former CEO of Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Dr. Afua Asabea Asare
In Ghanaian society, many people frown upon both men and women wearing dreadlocks for several reasons.
From claiming it is fetish to calling it dirty, these preconceived notions often blind people from seeing the bigger picture or appreciating the beauty of the hairstyle.
People with locs are sometimes stigmatised in society, whether in school, the office, or elsewhere.
One such person who has faced this is Dr. Afua Asabea Asare, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA).
In an interview with YouTuber Wode Maya, Dr Afua Asare recounted how she lost her job years ago because of her dreadlocks.
According to her, although the company [which she did not mention] did not explicitly state that her hairstyle was the reason for her dismissal, she was effectively frustrated out.
Dr Asabea Asare noted that she didn’t see anything wrong with wearing dreadlocks, as many girls in the office also wore wigs.
She explained that the reason for keeping her locs, which are 5 feet 4 inches long, is because she made a “covenant” with God in a time of need.
She said when God delivered, she felt she had to leave her hair untouched by a razor.
Clad in white with her 20-year-old natural hair that sweeps the floor, she told Wode Maya, “I don’t pay anybody to do anything. I can take care of it myself…I had a contract with God. I asked him to do something for me. If he did it, I wasn’t going to cut my hair for 20 years, and he did it, so I decided to keep my hair for 20 years, and it is now almost 20 years.”
She addded, “It wasn’t common when I was doing this. I was in corporate, and I almost lost my job, and I lost my job, and I think it was partly due to this…they couldn’t say that it was because of your hair, but they found a way of frustrating me out of the place because then, I didn’t fit in because of this kind of hair, and that is why I even intended to keep it.”
Dr. Afua Asabea Asare added, “I don’t care about anyone wearing their wigs, and if I want to wear mine too and it is my hair, I will fight it, and so I fought it.”
