Minority caucus abstains from approval of Sam George

0

Sam George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation Sam George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation

The Minority Caucus has backed down on their demand for a secret vote on the approval of Sam George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation.

The Caucus has instead elected to abstain on the matter.

The Minority Caucus had expressed its opposition to Sam George’s nomination as Minister citing his previous criticism of former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo and his refusal to retract or apologise as reasons for objecting to his nomination.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin contended that Sam George’s prior comments on these influential people were inappropriate for a ministerial candidate.

The Minority further maintained that, among other things, Mr. George was unable to produce records to back up his assertions about his income sources.

On this point, Afenyo-Markin questioned if he was qualified for the position.

NDC MP, Kwame Governs Agbodza disagreed with this stance.

“Sam George is not the owner of his wife… If your wife owns a business, you need her permission to be able to give details of that business. So the idea that when you’re being vetted, you can be vetted on everything including personal things,” he responded.

The nominees were subsequently approved by the Majority decisiib after the Minority stayed away from the exercise.

The ministerial nominees are:

Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Human Resources Minister

Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Science and Technology

Minister of Communications, Sam George

Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams

Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe

Government to reclaim degraded lands using bamboo – Fuseini Donkor

0

A former District Chief Executive for Sekyere Afram Plains, Fuseini Donkor, has revealed the government will be embarking on a project of using bamboo to reclaim lands degraded by illegal mining activities.

According to him, President Mahama sought the collaboration of some foreign partners who have started planting bamboo in the country.

“When you go to Atebubu and Bantama, these foreigners have planted about 15 thousand acres of bamboo. These trees within five years can grow over eight metres,” he said.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s morning show, “Kuro Yi Mu Nsem,” Mr. Donkor told Nana Kwadwo Jantuah that a feasibility study worth thousands of dollars was conducted by the partners for free on the destroyed lands before initiating the project.

He explained negotiations between President Mahama and the foreigners started during the NDC’s previous tenure.

“It was in 2016, during NDC’s previous term. But when the government changed, things didn’t go as planned. And they decided to plant and wait till the NDC is in power again.

“In 2022, the president pleaded with them to find trees they could plant on lands that are being destroyed by Galamsey practices. Trees that will be productive, can’t be easily destroyed and grow fast,” he stated.

Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant in the world. It has been recorded to grow at an amazing 47.6 inches in 24 hours. They can be used as building materials, food, medicine and air purification.

Mr Donkor explained that the type of bamboo to be used for the reclamation can also be used for ethanol production.

“They have brought us a better type of bamboo. The research shows these have very thick mass. It is not like the normal bamboo with bigger holes inside. The most amazing part of it is that it can be used for ethanol,” he added.

He stated that President Mahama is targeting 1 million acres of land across the country for the plantation.

The former DCE for Sekyere Afram Plains announced the Ashanti region is greatly going to benefit from this project, especially the Sekyere Afram Plains.

Minority Leader apologises to Clerk of Appointments Committee

0

Gifty Jiagge-Gobah and Alexander Afenyo-Markin Gifty Jiagge-Gobah and Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has unreservedly apologized to the Clerk of the Appointments Committee following his scathing accusation of bias and partisanship against her in her line of duty.

During a live broadcast session last week, Minority Leader accused Gifty Jiagge-Gobah of being partisan.

He claimed she was working for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday, January 30, when the Appointments Committee was vetting ministerial nominees.

A brawl broke out as a result of this charge, causing pandemonium that interfered with the screening procedure.

Citing several misunderstandings and procedural errors, the Minority Leader further blamed the parliamentary chaos on the Clerk’s management of the ministerial vetting procedure.

Afenyo-Markin was upset about the way she advertised and planned the nominees’ vetting.

During the consideration of the Appointments Committee’s report on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, urged the Minority Leader to render an apology to the Clerk because she and her family were traumatized by the scathing attack on her person.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, quickly stood to his feet and had no issues rendering an unqualified apology to the Clerk.

“If he holds the view that he knows the family, and my reaction to the conduct of our Clerk has resulted in some trauma to the family and the lady in question he knows the family; I don’t know the family, let me, Mr. Speaker, unreservedly say to the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, Mrs. Jiagge-Gobah, I am sorry.

“Let me also say to her lovely husband that if, as a husband, he is traumatized by this, I hereby unreservedly apologize to him.

“To the children, let me unreservedly say sorry. Let me unreservedly say sorry to the extended family, those close and dear to her who are affected by my outpouring of disappointment in her conduct. And to all her colleagues in the Parliamentary Service and to colleagues who felt that I could have managed the matter better, Mr. Speaker, I am sorry.

“I unreservedly apologize, and I know that with all discussions held, we will be able to work better, despite any reservations that we may have.”

'I was owing, but I paid' – Afenyo-Markin on past business debts

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for the Effutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has responded to resurfaced reports about his past business debts, emphasizing that he has fully settled all outstanding obligations.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs with Lantam Papanko, Afenyo-Markin addressed the claims, describing them as outdated publications from nearly a decade ago.

He explained that like any business, his companies, Square Logistics, and Excel Courier, faced financial challenges but ultimately honored all commitments.

“In the life of every business, you go through low moments,” he stated. “I started dealing with Access Bank and Intercontinental Bank in 2009. They financed some trucks for my business. Along the line, we defaulted on loan repayments, and we even sued Access Bank on some issues. However, we resolved it and settled the matter legally.”

The MP clarified that while his companies had financial struggles around 2014-2015, they had since cleared all debts. “Access Bank was paid long ago. My company does not owe them. Both Square Logistics and Excel Courier fully settled their obligations,” he confirmed.

Beyond Access Bank, Afenyo-Markin revealed that his businesses also had financial dealings with Standard Chartered Bank, Barclays, and the National Investment Bank (NIB).

“We owed Standard Chartered and defaulted, but we finished paying over $4 million. Our loan with NIB was also fully settled. When you pay off your loan, the bank releases your collateral and notifies the credit bureau that you no longer owe,” he explained.

Highlighting his extensive business experience, Afenyo-Markin noted that he had managed a group of companies involved in courier, logistics, and transport, working with major clients such as Ghana Bauxite and Ghana Manganese.

He also detailed his role in introducing large-capacity Mahmoud trucks and trailers into Ghana from Dubai and Turkey.

Concluding his remarks, the MP reaffirmed his financial integrity.

“It’s normal for businesses to owe at some point, but what matters is that I paid. I am a person of substance, and I stand by my assets,” he stated.

Majority Pressures Sam George to Apologize for Ministerial Approval, But He Stands His Ground

0

Sources indicate that a meeting was convened to persuade Sam George to offer a public apology on the floor of Parliament to gain the backing of Akufo-Addo loyalists for his approval. However, the MP has flatly rejected the request, insisting that he did not apologize during his vetting and would not do so now or in the future.
The approval of Hon. Sam George as Minister for Communications has hit a political deadlock, as the outspoken Member of Parliament (MP) has reportedly refused demands to apologize to President

Minority opposes approval of Sam George as Communications Minister

0

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has declared the Minority’s opposition to the approval of Samuel Nartey George for the position of Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations.

Speaking during a parliamentary session, Afenyo-Markin outlined the reasons for their stance, emphasising the nominee’s conduct and statements.

“We believe that only a few people in this country get the opportunity to become president of this nation. In governance, a president encounters a lot of challenges, some he may not even know, and for the nominee to insist that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo benefitted from galamsey is most unfortunate,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He noted that despite calls for Sam George to be measured in his language, he persisted, which the Minority considers “way below the belt.”

Afenyo-Markin said George had failed to provide some documents requested for and also highlighted the nominee’s history of holding other public officers to high standards and demanding accountability.

“This is the same nominee who has been holding other public officers to high standards and if you are demanding high standards and if you are demanding from other public officers accountability, then the rule is clear: he who comes to equity must do equity and he who comes to equity must come with clean hands,” he explained.

The Minority Leader affirmed that their opposition is based on these grounds and that they would express their protest through a vote against the nominee.

“Mr. Speaker, we are simply saying on the basis of these, we maintain our opposition and therefore will express our protest in a vote only against this nominee and we do so without prejudice,” Afenyo-Markin said.

Meanwhile, Sam George, in an X post on Tuesday noted that he had submitted all the necessary documents to Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

He emphasised his commitment to transparency and clarity, addressing any potential controversy surrounding his credentials.

“For the avoidance of any doubt and to settle any controversy, yesterday, I submitted to the Appointments Committee all the documents required of me, and more,” George stated.

He detailed that he submitted certified copies of his certificates from the London School of Economics (LSE) and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), evidence of his travel, receipts of accommodation, proof of fees paid, among others.

George reaffirmed his dedication to serving the nation, stating, “Facts are sacred and I remain resolute in my quest to serve my Nation to the best of my abilities. So help me God.”

NAM1 Trial Adjourned Over Delays In Appeal Process

0

The trial of Chief Executive Officer of defunct gold dealership firm, Menzgold Ghana Limited, has once again been adjourned, this time due to delays in an appeal he filed against the decision of the trial court.

He filed an appeal against the High Court’s order on him to open his defence after the court had found that the prosecution had led sufficient evidence to warrant him to open a defence.

The trial court presided over by Justice Ernest Owusu Dapaa of the Court of Appeal, had adjourned the case pending the decision of the Court of Appeal before proceeding.
But the appeal is yet to be heard and it turns out that a date has not even been fixed for the hearing of the appeal.

Watkins Adama, a Senior State Attorney told the court yesterday that, “we are yet to be served with any notices to appear before the Court of Appeal for the appeal to be heard.”

Asked whether the prosecution had taken any steps to ensure the appeal was heard, he said no, prompting the judge to express his dissatisfaction.

“The state with all the resources at your disposal if you were minded to file anything you would’ve done so. The accused is assumed innocent until proven guilty. You know I don’t like adjourning cases. This one I will put the blame on the state,” Justice Dapaa intimated.

He urged the prosecutor to follow up on the appeal if they are minded to have it determined for the case to continue.

The case was, therefore, adjourned to February 25, 2025, for an update on the pending appeal at the Court of Appeal.

NAM1, Menzgold Ghana Limited, and Brew Marketing Consult Ghana Limited are facing 39 counts of defrauding by false pretence, inducing members of the public to invest, and money laundering, among others for a total of GH¢340,835,650.

The court on July 11, 2024, ordered NAM1 to open his defence after holding that the prosecution led by the Director of Public Prosecution, Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, had led sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against NAM1 and two of his companies to warrant a defence.
On the charge of defrauding by false pretence contrary to Section 131(1) of Act 29, the court found that it appears at this stage that NAM1 knew that the representations he made to the general public to invest in Menzgold were false and must therefore answer to the charge.
Justice Owusu Dapaah, touching on the charge of inducement to invest contrary to Section 344 of the Companies Act of 2019, said counsel for NAM1 in his submission of no case argument, sought to make what the court describes as a ‘nuclear bomb’ argument by saying the act complained of occurred before 2019 when the new law came into effect.
The judge pointed out that the prosecution had rightly responded that inducement to invest contrary to Section 344 of the Companies Act of 2019 is the same as Section 320 of the old Act.
Justice Owusu Dapaah, touching on the charge of money laundering contrary to Section 1(1)b of Act 749, the court said there is sufficient evidence that since a prima facie case has been established, the transfers made by NAM1 and his companies, which are proceeds of unlawful activity, also creates a prima facie case of money laundering to which NAM1 must answer.

Bagbin condemns attack on Appointments Committee Clerk

0

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has strongly condemned the attack on the Clerk to the Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah.

His remarks follow an outburst by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who, during a live televised session last week, accused Gifty Jiagge-Gobah of partisanship.

He alleged that she was working in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Appointments Committee’s vetting of ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30.

This accusation triggered a brawl, leading to chaos that disrupted the vetting process.

The Minority Leader further attributed the parliamentary disorder to the Clerk’s handling of the ministerial vetting process, citing a series of miscommunications and procedural lapses.

Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed frustration over how she scheduled and announced the vetting of nominees.

In response to the incident, Speaker Alban Bagbin suspended four MPs and directed the Clerk to lodge a formal complaint with the police.

Speaking on the matter in Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, Speaker Bagbin expressed his displeasure over the attacks on the Clerk to the Appointments Committee.

“As the Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Parliamentary Service Board, I strongly condemn that incident,” he stated.

He stated that the Clerk is a public servant and should not be blamed for the failure of Committee members to resolve their differences.

“This Clerk has worked with us for 19 good years, and she is one of the best Clerks we have had,” he added.

The Speaker clarified that a Clerk to a Committee serves as the chair of the committee’s secretariat and acts as the procedural and technical advisor to both the chairperson and committee members.

Citing Order 266 (3) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, he explained that a committee must convene to consider business at a date and time determined by its chairperson.

“It is the duty of the Clerk to the Committee to transmit the notice of the meeting in accordance with the instructions of the chair and the provisions of Order 270(1)(b),” he stated.

“Therefore, any displeasure by a member on the date, hour of business of consideration at a committee ought to properly be directed at the chair and not the Clerk to the Committee who is duty bound under the said Order to transmit notices and to organise meetings.”

In a surprising disclosure, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Deputy Majority Leader of Parliament, revealed that the administration had requested that Members of Parliament (MPs) not proceed with the vetting of Linda Ocloo, the proposed Minister for Trade and Industry. Afenyo-Markin’s statements shed insight on the back-room conversations that took place during Ocloo’s screening process.

According to Afenyo-Markin, government officials asked MPs multiple times to reconsider the decision to vet Ocloo, citing worries about her suitability for the post. This discovery has sparked concerns about the political maneuvering that frequently occurs during the vetting of cabinet nominees in Ghana.

Ocloo, a former Shai-Osudoku MP, has faced criticism for her qualifications and experience as director of the Trade and Industry Ministry, particularly considering the country’s economic woes. Some MPs and public observers have expressed doubts about her capacity to oversee the ministry amidst requests for economic changes.

The government begged us not to vet Linda Ocloo reveals Afenyo-Markin.

Despite the government’s wishes, Afenyo-Markin underlined the significance of openness in the vetting process, arguing that MPs must properly analyze applicants’ qualifications to ensure that the best people are nominated to serve the country.

Minister vetting is a controversial process in Ghanaian politics, with numerous political factions weighing in on applicants’ fitness. As Ocloo’s vetting garners more attention, it remains to be seen how the public and political elites will react to the increasing discussion.

We are ready for 2028 – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament of Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament of Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament of Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for the 2028 general elections, emphasizing the party’s readiness to prove itself as a better alternative to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking in an interview with Lantam Papanko on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs, Afenyo-Markin reflected on his role as Minority Leader, describing it as a demanding but necessary responsibility.

“Seeing that I’m in my first term of being a Minority Leader, the work, more or less, is the same. You just go here and there, get around matters every day, and face its challenges. You have to show leadership and find your way around. It’s not a job where you can sleep and expect all to be well,” he said.

He assured the party faithful that, despite the challenges, he remains committed to delivering on his mandate.

“Our aim is to show the Ghanaian public that we are ready for 2028 and that, given the opportunity, we can do better in governance than the NDC. They are forming their government, and we are also getting ourselves ready for the task ahead,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

Acknowledging that leadership comes with both successes and setbacks, he noted that the process of governance is a continuous learning experience.

“Every work comes with a challenge, and you have to face it and move on. You will succeed in part, you will have some failures, and you will have some challenges. But all these add up to maturity on the job and a better understanding of governance,” he explained.

The Minority Leader reiterated his commitment to leading the opposition constructively, ensuring that the NPP holds the government accountable on critical issues.

“The NDC should expect constructive opposition and criticism. We will not go at them on trivial matters but will raise serious issues of national interest. Where cooperation is necessary, we will engage, because that is what Ghanaians expect,” he assured.

Afenyo-Markin concluded by reaffirming his dedication to his party and his role, stating that those who chose him for the position recognize his capabilities.

“They know what substance I am made of, they know my understanding of the party’s ideals, and I made a promise to them that I won’t let them down,” he said.

Former Asante Kotoko captain, Isaac Amoako, has joined the growing chorus of condemnation against hooliganism in Ghanaian football following the tragic death of Yaw Frimpong, a devoted Asante Kotoko supporter, during their match against Nsoatreman on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Deeply concerned about the rising incidents of violence in Ghanaian football, Amoako urged fans to abandon such behaviors and learn from past tragedies.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, he emphasised the negative impact of hooliganism on the sport.

“No one enjoys investing in a product that promotes hooliganism. Nobody wants to be associated with such behavior.

“As Ghanaians and a football-loving nation, we must learn from past events. We have come of age, and these acts of violence must stop. What happened started with the players and escalated to the supporters, ultimately leading to the tragic death of this young fan,” he said.

In response to the incident, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended the use of Nana Konamansah Park by Nsoatreman, charged both Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman with violating Section 12(1)(j) of the 2019 GFA Disciplinary Code, and temporarily halted the league while investigations continue.

Guinea joins Ghana, Chad and others in the elimination of human African trypanosomiasis

0

Guinea has officially joined Ghana, Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, and Chad in eliminating human African trypanosomiasis as a public health issue. This achievement was confirmed following validation by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Togo eliminated the disease in 2020, followed by Benin and Côte d’Ivoire in 2021, Uganda and Equatorial Guinea in 2022, Ghana in 2023, and Chad in 2024. The rhodesiense form of the disease was also declared eliminated as a public health problem in Rwanda, with WHO validation in 2022.

The gambiense form of human African trypanosomiasis, the only type transmitted in Guinea, becomes the first neglected tropical disease to be eradicated in the country. This milestone is a significant achievement in public health, coinciding with the observance of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day on January 30.

WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the announcement is a testament to the global progress made in combating neglected tropical diseases and a beacon of hope for countries still fighting human African trypanosomiasis.

“Today’s announcement is both a testament to the global progress against neglected tropical diseases and a beacon of hope for nations still battling human African trypanosomiasis,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, is a parasitic disease transmitted through the bite of infected tsetse flies. Early symptoms include fever, headaches, and joint pain, while more severe stages can lead to neurological issues such as confusion, disturbed sleep, and changes in behavior.

There are two forms of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT): one caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, which is found in 24 countries across West and Central Africa and accounts for more than 92% of cases, and the other caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, present in 13 countries in East and Southern Africa, responsible for the remaining cases.

The primary strategies for controlling sleeping sickness include reducing infection reservoirs and minimizing the presence of the tsetse fly. Screening individuals at risk plays a critical role in early diagnosis, enabling treatment before the disease reaches its advanced stage. Early diagnosis helps avoid complicated and risky treatment procedures while improving the chances of a successful cure.

Ghana’s Sports Minister-designate, Kofi Adams, has condemned the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Nana Pooley, labelling it as murder and assuring swift action from the Police.

Speaking on the matter, Adams emphasized the seriousness of the incident and assured the public that authorities would take appropriate action.

“This is murder,” he stated on Sporty FM. “The police will initiate criminal investigations, and it will be taken seriously.”

Nana Pooley was fatally stabbed during Asante Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League clash against Nsoatreman FC on January 2, 2025. His passing has sparked widespread concern and raised questions about security at football matches in the country.

In response to the incident, Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare led a delegation to Asante Kotoko’s headquarters in Kumasi to discuss security measures and ensure such tragedies do not recur.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko has announced their withdrawal from the GPL as part of the club’s effort to seek justice for the deceased.

Ama Pratt reaffirms her longstanding support for Vice President Professor Naana Jane Ama Pratt reaffirms her longstanding support for Vice President Professor Naana Jane

Maame Ama Pratt has reaffirmed her longstanding support for Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, stating that her commitment to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leadership is not new.

Speaking in an interview following her appointment as Press Secretary to the Vice President, Ama Pratt dismissed claims that she had recently aligned with the party for political gain.

“For me, it’s not even about when I became NDC.

“The real question is, when did I start believing in the vision of President John Mahama and his commitment to women? That has always been there, from the very beginning,” she stated.

She revealed that her admiration for Professor Opoku-Agyemang predates her official political involvement.

“I have been her biggest admirer. Before she was even named as running mate in 2019, I interviewed her and told her publicly, ‘If you are chosen, I volunteer myself. I will work in whatever capacity you need me to.’ So, for me, this is not new,” she added.

Ama Pratt emphasised that she had actively participated in Opoku-Agyemang’s campaign and rejected suggestions that she had been neutral in the past.

“If you followed me, you would know I’ve never been neutral. I took part in her campaign. I didn’t just support her silently; I was there, working for her success,” she asserted.

She further revealed that despite being advised to maintain a neutral public stance, she made a conscious decision to stand by her convictions.

“In 2020, I was advised to stay neutral because of my media career. People told me, ‘For longevity, don’t do this,’ but I chose to stand for what I believe in. I was very clear about my support for her,” she explained.

Ama Pratt believes that her appointment is simply a continuation of a commitment she made long ago.

“It’s not enough to just celebrate having the first female Vice-President. We need to ensure that she succeeds. That means getting involved, doing the work, and making sure that this moment counts,” she declared.

Brigadier General Ziblim Bawah Ayorrogo is the Commissioner of the GRA Brigadier General Ziblim Bawah Ayorrogo is the Commissioner of the GRA

Brigadier General Ziblim Bawah Ayorrogo, Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division, has announced stringent measures to ensure that only approved goods enter the country while enhancing revenue collection.

Speaking at the 2025 International World Customs Day celebration on the theme “Customs Delivering on its Commitments to Efficiency, Security, and Prosperity,” he emphasised the division’s commitment to upholding national safety standards, preventing substandard imports, and safeguarding the country’s borders.

Brigadier General Ayorrogo said that despite challenges in revenue collection, often during the first quarter, largely due to decreased imports after the peak period of November and December, he was optimistic that the division would meet its revenue target once they strived to meet that of the first quarter of the year.

Reading the message from the World Customs Organization (WCO), he highlighted that customs was focused on turning its commitments into concrete actions that would enhance trade facilitation, strengthen security, and promote sustainable economic growth.

“WCO members are reminded of the direction set by the organisation and encouraged to showcase actions taken to build momentum and share measurable progress,” he said.

Explaining the theme, he said efficiency was driven by modernised customs procedures, digital services, data-driven operations, and collaboration with public and private stakeholders, while security entailed customs operations such as safeguarding supply chains, preventing the movement of illicit goods, combating money laundering, and enhancing crisis preparedness.

For prosperity, he underscored the importance of fair revenue collection, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and supporting sustainable economic growth through inclusive policies that address the diverse needs of citizens.

The commissioner called for customs to enhance visibility and communication, showcasing their efforts and results to the government and society, saying, “We are embarking on a path that challenges us to communicate more and better.”

Alhaji Iddrisu Iddisah Seidu, the chairman for the occasion, highlighted the pivotal role of customs in facilitating global trade, protecting national borders, and promoting economic growth, describing their work as often unseen but impactful to businesses and individuals worldwide.

He said this year’s theme was a reminder that their commitment to efficiency, security, and prosperity was unwavering, adding that efficient customs procedures were essential for trade facilitation and economic growth, adding that security remained paramount in protecting the nation’s borders.

Assistant Commissioner Theresah Portakey, Sector Commander of the Tema Customs Division, reaffirmed customs’ dedication to integrity, transparency, and accountability in their operations.

She stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to achieve their goals, saying that collective efforts would foster economic growth and ensure customs’ principles and values resonate in all operations.

The event also recognised individuals and teams whose contributions had significantly advanced customs operations in Ghana.

Presentations on “customs delivering in efficiency, security, and prosperity,” “Ghana Customs then and now,” and “advancing commitment on the theme through higher specialised education on customs administration.”

Lionel Messi’s plans to participate in the 2026 World Cup has taken a significant step forward, with Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, disclosing that an agreement has been reached with the legendary forward to see him feature in the tournament.

As a linchpin for Argentina, Messi has played a pivotal role in the team’s triumphs, capped by their recent World Cup win, and continues to defy time with his enduring brilliance.

His triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar got fans fearing the 37-year-old legend might have had his final bow on football’s grandest stage. However, Scaloni has dished out some hope during an interview with DSports.

“The first thing to say is that both Messi and his teammates are aware that there is still a reasonable amount of time left. Messi and the rest of the team want to play in the World Cup.

“But to be sure, you have to let time pass to see how you get there. He knows very well what we think. I’m not worried; the only thing I want is for him to be happy,” he said.

While uncertainty surrounds Messi’s long-term future with Argentina, the immediate priority is securing a spot in the next World Cup.

A crucial double-header against Brazil and Uruguay looms, and victories in both matches would guarantee Argentina’s qualification for the 2026 tournament, set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
