Tension in Twifo Atti Morkwa NPP as constituency youth organiser allegedly bites off polling station secretary’s finger

0

A fact-finding mission by the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the 2024 electoral defeat in the Twifo Atti Morkwa constituency of the Central Region turned bloody when the constituency youth organiser, Kwadwo Debrah, allegedly bit off a polling station secretary’s finger during an altercation.

Tension is currently high within the NPP in Twifo Atti Morkwa, with some party members calling for the expulsion of the officer involved and urging the police to take action.

The violent clash between the constituency youth organiser, Kwadwo Debrah, popularly known as “Last Two,” and the polling station secretary, Frank Kwaku Baah, occurred last Sunday during a meeting with a section of the party’s committee set up to investigate the party’s defeat.

The committee had visited the constituency to engage grassroots leaders in identifying factors that contributed to the loss and to recommend strategies for rebuilding the party.

Altercation

According to Frank Baah, some polling station executives at the meeting blamed the constituency executives for the party’s electoral defeat.

He alleged that Kwadwo Debrah, the constituency youth organiser, became agitated over some of the remarks and, without provocation, attacked him from behind by slapping him.

“The altercation turned bloody when Kwadwo Debrah bit off my finger, leading to severe bleeding and my hospitalisation at Twifo Praso Government Hospital,” Baah recounted.

He has since called for justice, stating that he has been left maimed.

“I’m still in shock and pain,” he said. “The party must take action against Debrah and ensure that he faces the consequences of his actions.”

The case has been reported to the Twifo Atti Morkwa District Police Command for further investigation, but no arrests have been made yet.

Kyei Mensah-Bonsu speaks out on Dr. Bawumia’s fate

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

In the wake of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent electoral setback, former Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has called for patience and a data-driven approach before deciding on the 2024 Flag-bearer for the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s future as the party’s flagbearer.

Breaking his silence on the matter, Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the need to await the findings of the post-election committee before making any definitive judgments.

A Time for Reflection, Not Hasty Decisions

“I’d rather not discuss it right now,” Mensah-Bonsu stated, acknowledging Bawumia’s current role as party leader and the sting of the recent loss. He cautioned against the blame game that has already begun, suggesting that responsibility for the outcome is shared across the board.

“In my opinion, everyone played a role. Even I’ve been blamed by some, with a few suggesting that Kyei Mensah Bonsu’s leadership change contributed to our defeat,” he admitted, referencing suggestions that his leadership transition contributed to the party’s performance.

The Unprecedented Bawumia Campaign

Speaking in an interview with Kojo Marfo on AbusuaNkommo at Abusua965FM, Mensah-Bonsu offered a candid assessment of Bawumia’s campaign, describing it as unlike anything he’d witnessed before.

He mused on potential alternative scenarios, questioning whether a different approach might have yielded a different result.

“The campaign run by Bawumia was unlike any I’ve seen before. I wonder, what if he hadn’t run that campaign? Perhaps the consequences would have been different. Maybe we would have secured 60 seats instead of 88”, he emphasized.

Waiting for the Verdict

However, Mensah-Bonsu stressed that these were merely hypothetical scenarios. His core message was one of measured consideration. “We should let the committee complete their work. If, upon conclusion, their findings indicate that Bawumia performed exceptionally well, despite the outcome, then no one can fault him, and we should consider continuing our support for him.”

He was quick to add “It’s too early to say whether Bawumia should continue, considering that the committee’s findings have not been established yet. It wouldn’t be wise to make a decision now, so we should wait to see the committee’s findings”

2016 vs 2024: A Tale of Two Campaigns

Kyei Mensah-Bonsu also shared his observations on the vastly different atmospheres that characterized the 2016 and 2024 campaigns.

He said “In 2016, people were enthusiastic, eager to listen to our message,” he recalled. “But in 2024, it was a different story. The atmosphere was different. In town, only a few people showed interest, while others seemed indifferent. I sensed it would be tough, but we remained hopeful, given Bawumia’s impressive performance, surpassing all our previous presidential candidates since 1992”.

Despite the shifting tides, Mensah-Bonsu highlighted Bawumia’s relentless dedication. “Every constituency we visited had three engagement sessions…he consistently spoke for one hour, totalling three hours per constituency. We covered three constituencies daily. Speaking for nine hours every day, I was afraid he would break out, but his high spirits remained unwavering.”

Former SIC MD sues company over termination, rejects Agyenim-Boateng’s appointment

0

The immediate past Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company Limited, Ms. Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, has sued the company and its incoming MD, James Agyenim-Boateng.

President John Dramani Mahama on January 27, announced Mr. Agyenim-Boateng as Ms. Hollistar Duah-Yentumi’s successor but she has rejected the appointment in a February 4 suit.

Ms. Hollistar Duah-Yentumi argued that “under and by virtue of the agreement the Plaintiff’s tenure as the Managing Director is for a period of four years, thus expiring on the 1st day of January 2028 or soon thereafter as may be agreed upon by the Board of Directors of the 1st Defendant and the Plaintiff.”

“The Plaintiff therefore states that all terms relating to and regarding the Plaintiff’s employment as the Managing Director of the publicly listed company such as the 1st Defendant is governed solely by the employment agreement executed by the parties,” the suit added in part.

Ms. Hollistar Duah-Yentumi further argued that “regarding the termination of the Plaintiff’s employment, Plaintiff states that under and by virtue of clause 7 of the agreement, the Plaintiff’s employment may only be terminated by the board of directors of the 1 Defendant or by all the shareholders of the company acting at an Annual General Meeting for the said purpose.”

The suit is therefore praying the High Court to declare “that the purported termination of the Plaintiff’s employment as the Managing Director of the 1st Defendant is unlawful and in breach of the employment contract executed between Plaintiff and the 1st Defendant” and that “the purported appointment of the second Defendant to act as the Managing Director of the 1st Defendant is unlawful.”

The legal team is also seeking “an order directed at the Defendants to make payment of the Plaintiff’s entire salary and benefits for the unexpired term of the employment contract, which benefits, and salary are pleaded in paragraphs 11 and 12 above.”

Container pile-up at Tema Port drops by 21.7% after Customs’ intervention
The Acting Head of the Ghana Customs Laboratory, Samuel Akrofi, has said the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has successfully reduced the number of uncleared containers at the Tema Port from 4,600 to 3,600, marking a 21.7 percent drop within ten days.
According to him, the pile-up, which started in July 2024 due to scanner breakdowns, had been slowing down trade and increasing congestion at the port.

US Army Major sentenced to 70 months for smuggling firearms to Ghana

0

A U.S. Army Major, Kojo Owusu Dartey, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his involvement in a firearms smuggling operation to Ghana.

Dartey, 42, was found guilty by a jury on April 23, 2024, and convicted of multiple offences, including conspiracy, dealing in firearms without a licence, and smuggling goods from the United States.

According to court records and evidence presented at trial, Dartey played a key role in a 16-defendant marriage fraud scheme involving soldiers at Fort Liberty and foreign nationals from Ghana. He later provided a tip that led to the prosecution of the case.

During the trial of U.S. v. Agyapong between June 28 and July 2, 2021, Dartey lied under oath about his sexual relationship with a defence witness. Additionally, while the trial was ongoing, he purchased seven firearms in the Fort Liberty area and enlisted a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to acquire three more firearms and send them to North Carolina.

Dartey then concealed the weapons inside blue barrels, hiding them under rice and household goods. With the help of an Army Chief Warrant Officer, he smuggled the barrels out of the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, on a container ship destined for the Port of Tema in Ghana.

The smuggling attempt was thwarted when the Ghana Revenue Authority discovered the hidden firearms upon arrival at the Port of Tema. The seizure was subsequently reported to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) attaché in Ghana and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Field Division.

Announcing the sentencing, Daniel Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, underscored the severity of the offences. The case was investigated by the ATF, the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Export Enforcement.

Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II presided over the sentencing, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel J. Diaz prosecuted the case.

Dartey’s conviction highlights ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to curb illegal arms trafficking and ensure that those who violate federal law face justice.

Kotoko and Hearts demand security reforms after Pooley’s death

0

Ghanaian football giants Asante Kotoko SC and Accra Hearts of Oak have come together to demand urgent security reforms in the Ghana Premier League following the tragic death of Nana Pooley, a devoted Kotoko supporter.

In a strategic meeting held in Accra, members of Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) and representatives from Hearts of Oak’s Board and Management discussed key issues affecting the league, with a strong focus on enhancing safety at match venues.

The two rival clubs are set to present a joint position paper to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), outlining recommendations to improve security standards across the league. Their engagement with the Executive Committee of the GFA is scheduled for Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Kotoko and Hearts emphasized that Pooley’s tragic and untimely death is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by violence, hooliganism, and lawlessness in Ghanaian football. They are determined to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.

This united front between two of Ghana’s fiercest rivals underscores the urgent need for lasting security reforms in domestic football.

‘I requested a ring from my man to stop people from calling me a prostitute when I was pregnant’

Ghanaian musician cum entrepreneur, Mzbel play videoGhanaian musician cum entrepreneur, Mzbel

In 2023, rumours went riffe that Mzbel was engaged after she frequently flaunted a ring on her finger.

In past interviews, she often referred to herself as either married or engaged when questioned about her relationship status.

The ring appeared in her pregnancy photos and even during her lavish outdooring event, which went viral on social media.

However, the truth behind the ring is now out.

Speaking openly, Mzbel disclosed that she is neither married nor officially engaged.

She explained that she requested the ring from her partner during her pregnancy to avoid the disrespect typically directed at unmarried pregnant women.

“I asked my baby daddy for the ring, and he bought it for me. If I’m seen without a ring while pregnant, people will mock me and call me ‘jantra’ (prostitute). It’s annoying. But when the ring is on your finger, it silences them,” she told Empress Gifty during an interview on The U Cook Show.

Mzbel continued, “To the public, they’ll think I’m married, but when I need to explain, I’ll say I’m engaged.”

When asked if she ever wants to experience the joy and privileges of marriage, instead of just having children with men, Mzbel responded bluntly, “To religious people, marriage is important, but for someone like me, what makes me feel good and happy is falling in love. Also, I can do everything married people do, I can have sex and have children.”

She was also asked if her family knows about her relationship with the man and what their views are.

Mzbel replied, “The man hasn’t told my family anything, and he hasn’t performed any rites with them. When you’re rich and successful, your family will just follow whatever you do. So, you have to always work hard to create the happiness you want.”

On whether the man’s family knows her, Mzbel said she doesn’t want them to know she is the mother of their son’s child.

“I don’t think his family knows me, and I don’t even want them to. They’re Christians, and they’ll keep pestering me. They like me, but they don’t know I’m a part of their family. They know me, but they don’t know I’m the mother of their son’s child,” Mzbel stated.

Protect lands, water bodies from illegal mining – President Mahama to chiefs

0

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has urged chiefs and the youth to play a key role in protecting Ghana’s lands, forests, and water reserves from the devastating effects of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

He made this call to action during his “Thank You Tour” in Sekondi, Western Region.

President Mahama emphasised the need to restore Ghana’s water bodies, which he described as unattractive due to the impact of galamsey.

He also announced plans to address the growing issue of illegal mining in Ghana.

“The entire country is appalled by the extensive environmental degradation caused by illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey. Your own son, Armah Kofi-Buah, is formulating strategies to implement our manifesto promise to combat this galamsey menace,” he stated.

President Mahama stressed that tackling illegal mining requires a collaborative effort, particularly from chiefs and the youth in the Western Region.

He believes that protecting lands, forests, and water bodies should be a collective responsibility rather than relying solely on security agencies.

“We will not make this the responsibility of only the security agencies. We will involve chiefs and young people in the communities to help protect their own lands, forests, and water bodies,” he noted.

He further emphasised, “We will take urgent steps to halt mining activities in our forest reserves and on our rivers.”

Container pile-up at Tema Port drops by 21.7% after Customs’ intervention

0

The Acting Head of the Ghana Customs Laboratory, Samuel Akrofi, has said the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has successfully reduced the number of uncleared containers at the Tema Port from 4,600 to 3,600, marking a 21.7 percent drop within ten days.

According to him, the pile-up, which started in July 2024 due to scanner breakdowns, had been slowing down trade and increasing congestion at the port.

“The breakdown of scanning equipment led to delays in processing cargo. By December, the number of containers at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) had risen to 4,600. The situation was getting out of hand,” he said.

“The companies responsible for the scanners made efforts to resolve the breakdowns by flying in experts, but the issues persisted, causing significant delays,” Mr Akrofi said on Eye on Port, a programme by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

To address the issue, he said Customs introduced new measures in January 2025. One key action was to move uncleared containers to internal container depots (ICDs), where they would undergo physical inspection instead of being scanned.

“We needed to clear the backlog without compromising security, so we transferred the containers to depots like the Golden Jubilee Terminal for further checks,” Akrofi noted.

He emphasised that although the containers were not scanned, they were strictly inspected manually to ensure that security was maintained.

“The scanners complement our work, but Customs has other technologies and processes to verify shipments. We did not take any risks,” he said.

Also, he said beyond addressing the backlog, Customs is making efforts to improve efficiency in cargo clearance through the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) – a digital platform that streamlines trade processes by reducing paperwork, enhancing risk management and improving collaboration among agencies.

Furthermore, he highlighted that Customs has shifted from a border-focused approach to a supply chain-based system.

“We no longer just check goods at the border. Now, we track shipments throughout the supply chain using technology. The use of risk profiling allows trusted traders to clear goods faster, while high-risk traders face stricter checks,” he elaborated.

Moreover, he noted that Customs is also focused on increasing government revenue. Akrofi said that instead of checking every single shipment, it will use data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify non-compliant traders.

“Most shipments are compliant, but a few pose a security threat. Our job is to find and stop those ones without slowing down the entire process,” he explained.

Where was the ambulance, medics when Pooley was stabbed?

Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams

Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams, has raised concerns about the standard of health services provided at various Ghana Premier League venues, following the death of Kotoko fan Yaw Frimpong, also known as Pooley.

He questioned the absence of emergency response services, such as ambulances and medics, when Pooley was stabbed during the chaotic incident at Nsoatre.

The Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency asserted that if emergency health services were provided, the deceased could have been saved.

Speaking in an interview with Metro TV on Good Morning Ghana, Adams called for a review of emergency response services, including security, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“Where was the ambulance? Where were the medics? Were they close enough to offer specialized first aid? These are questions we must answer. This incident calls for a number of reviews. We must enhance security, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure our emergency response measures are up to standard,” he said.

Kofi Adams eulogized Pooley, commending him for his unwavering support for Kotoko, which made him stand out.

“He loved his sport. He supported his club everywhere they played. Even if the national team had just one Kotoko player, Pooley would be there, unless he couldn’t get a visa. This is the type of person we’ve lost,” he added.

He made these comments after Pooley was fatally stabbed during a melee at a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Kotoko on February 2, 2025.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have banned Nsoatreman from using their home venue and initiated a probe into the violent incident.

‘Vetting chaos committee’ will resume work on February 7

0

Emmanuel Bedzrah, Chairman of the Parliamentary ad-hoc committee investigating the vetting chaos at the Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025, has announced that the committee will resume its public hearing on Friday, February 7, 2025.

This comes after the abrupt suspension of proceedings during the hearing on Wednesday, February 5. Initially, the suspension was attributed to a directive from Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.

However, it was later clarified that the Speaker was unaware of the decision, which instead came from the Clerk of Parliament.

Speaking on Joy FM on Thursday, February 6, the Ho West MP confirmed that Speaker Bagbin has now directed the committee to continue its work.

“I need to meet with my committee members this morning. We agreed to have a meeting at 3 O’clock by then I would have received some information from the speaker. So, for today, there won’t be any public hearings. We will continue tomorrow [Friday, February 7].

“…The speaker called and said, ‘No, we cannot stop this work, we should continue, and he has given direct instruction to the clerk that we should continue,” he stated.

Ghana will suffer huge global reputational risk if Dr Asiama is approved as Governor

0

The Minority Caucus has issued a stark warning regarding the potential global reputational risks Ghana could face if Dr. Johnson Asiama is confirmed as the Governor of the Central Bank. In a recent press conference, the opposition lawmakers articulated their concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to consider Dr. Asiama for the pivotal role amidst ongoing criminal charges against him.

During the address, the Minority MPs expressed confusion over the president’s haste to appoint Dr. Asiama without allowing the legal proceedings to conclude. “We are at a loss as to why President Mahama could not wait for the completion of the process before appointing Dr. Johnson Asiama,” they stated. They further emphasized the importance of clarifying Dr. Asiama’s legal status, arguing that both the state and the governor himself would benefit from resolving the allegations surrounding him.

The MPs voiced their apprehension that the president’s actions imply a lack of transparency and integrity, stating, “This decision gives us reason to believe that Dr. Johnson Asiama is not clean.” They underscored the critical nature of the role he is nominated for, particularly as Ghana navigates its current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, which demands utmost credibility in financial dealings.

“This solid attempt to discontinue the proceedings of the criminal charges against Dr. Asiama is precisely why we believe a potential criminal convict should not hold such an important office,” the Minority asserted. They raised questions about how international partners, including the IMF and the International Finance Corporation, would perceive Ghana if one of its leading negotiators is embroiled in serious legal issues.

The press conference captured significant public interest, particularly after TV3 Ghana shared a video of the event on their official Instagram page on February 5, 2025, prompting widespread reactions from viewers.

As the debate surrounding Dr. Asiama’s appointment continues, the Minority Caucus remains steadfast in its position, advocating for accountability and transparency in the appointment of key government officials. The coming days will be crucial as the nation watches how this situation unfolds and its potential implications for Ghana’s global standing.

GAR Minister assesses sanitation at major markets in Accra …outlines plans for improvement

0

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms Linda Ocloo, has visited some major markets in Accra to assess sanitation challenges and outline plans for improvement.

The tour, which included the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie, and Lapaz markets, was part of the National Democratic Congress’ “Clean Up Ghana” initiative.

During the visit, Ms Ocloo emphasised that sanitation and waste management remained key priorities and announced plans to introduce a comprehensive waste management policy aimed at ensuring cleaner public spaces.

She said her plans would focus on promoting waste segregation, providing garbage bins in public areas, and strengthening the sanitation departments of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to improve efficiency.

She stressed the need for teamwork and dedication to achieve a cleaner and healthier Greater Accra, adding “The people of this region deserve a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous environment.”

The minister acknowledged the challenges facing the markets and assured traders and residents that solutions would be developed.

One major concern she raised was the increase in unauthorised structures put up by traders, particularly in online markets.

Ms Ocloo revealed plans to partner with the Office of the President to address this and also a meet all coordinating directors to discuss measures and ways to improve sanitation.

Furthermore, Ms Ocloo emphasised that sanitation and waste management were top priorities and announced plans to implement a comprehensive waste management policy under the National Democratic Congress’ “Clean Up Ghana” initiative.

‘I don’t believe an NPP MP said this’ – Annoh-Dompreh claims

0

Frank Annoh-Dompreh is the MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh is the MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has disagreed with the assertions and widespread claims attributed to the Minority caucus in Parliament regarding the ‘Daughter of a murderer’ comment.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Annoh-Dompreh stated that those comments directed at the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, could not have come from the Minority caucus.

He acknowledged that the comments were unfortunate and condemned them.

“It is unfortunate that something of that nature happened. I have no idea who uttered those comments and I will never support anyone to do as such. In our orders, if a member doesn’t speak through the microphone when speaking, the Hansard does not capture it,” he said.

The Member of Parliament of Nsawam Adoagyiri however, maintained that no New Patriotic Party MP would have made such remarks, adding that the comments could have originated from the public gallery, where members of the public are seated in Parliament.

“We will try and if we find out who did it, the person must show remorse. That is if the person made those comments and is from our side [Minority] but I don’t think someone from our side could have said those things.

“It could have come from the public gallery, I don’t know but it is so unfortunate. One of the seniors from the other side [Majority] approached me regarding the unfortunate comments. He even proposed that we find the persons responsible and have a talk with said person and find a way to deal with it behind the scenes,” he disclosed.

The lawmaker, reaffirming his confidence in his caucus and its members, hinted at the possibility of identifying the responsible individual if efforts are made.

“If we are so minded to find the person, we will be able to find him but I’m not sure the person is from the Minority. I’m not saying it’s not possible but I’m just not sure it’s from our side. As a whip, I know my people well,” he added.

Background

Parliamentary proceedings on February 4, 2025, took a disappointing turn when decorum gave way to insults and political score-settling.

During discussions on the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the MP for Klottey Korle, sought for permission to contribute but was ignored by the Speaker who instead gave the floor to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a disturbing moment that exposed the toxic political culture in Parliament, a voice from the Minority side was heard hurling a deeply derogatory remark at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, referring to her as the “daughter of a murderer” and ordering her to sit down.

Another unknown MP believed to be on the Minority side followed up, claiming, “But there is evidence that her father killed people.”

The comments have sparked outrage among the general public, with many demanding an investigation into the incident to identify the MP who made the remarks.

Furthermore, a petition has been submitted to Parliament by officials from the Klottey Korle constituency, requesting a thorough inquiry into the matter.

IMF doesn’t have jurisdiction over appointment of Bank of Ghana Governor – Kwakye tells Boako

0

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye is opposing the idea of the lawmaker for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako to petition the  International Monetary Fund (IMF)  over the appointment of Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Dr Kwakye says although the Fund may have jurisdiction over Ghana’s External Credit Facility (ECF), it does not have power over who becomes the Governor of the central bank.

He questioned the basis of roping in the Fund in the matter of the nomination of Dr Johnson Asiama as the Governor following the exit of Dr Ernest Addison.

Dr Kwakye’s comments come at a time when the Minority in Parliament has strongly criticised President John Dramani Mahama for allowing the discontinuation of criminal charges against Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, the acting Governor of the central bank.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, 5th February, the Minority, led by Dr Gideon Boako, insisted that the prosecution should be allowed to proceed despite Dr Asiama’s appointment.

They argued that dropping the charges raises serious concerns about governance and accountability.

According to the Minority, the decision to discontinue the case could have far-reaching economic and political consequences for Ghana.

“Political and economic risk analysts will not be kind to Ghana given that some global financial institutions may refuse to do business with Ghana due to the uncertainty over these charges being re-instated by a future Attorney-General. This will likely increase the cost of Ghana’s international transactions,” they warned.

They stressed that halting the prosecution does not equal to clearing Dr Asiama of wrongdoing and that a future government could still reinstate the charges, potentially undermining confidence in his decisions as BoG Governor.

The Minority further questioned the implications of Dr Asiama’s position on Ghana’s international financial standing.

“Dropping the charges does not mean he has been absolved of the crime. These charges can be brought back under a different government, and what will become of the decisions he will make as Governor?” they asked.

They argued that allowing an individual with unresolved legal issues to lead the central bank could create uncertainties in financial policymaking and damage Ghana’s credibility on the global stage.

As a result, the Minority announced plans to formally notify the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of their concerns.

“We will be writing to the IMF to draw attention to this, given that he will also, as Governor of the Bank, be a member of the IMF Board of Governors, exposing Ghana to international ridicule,” they stated.

They emphasised that transparency and accountability should not be compromised, particularly at a time when Ghana is under an IMF programme and requires strong financial leadership.

Reacting to this on his X page, Dr Kwakye said “Why should the IMF be brought into this matter? Can’t we deal with our issues internally ourselves? Even if it’s a legal issue, don’t we have our internal legal structures to address it?

“Dr Boako’s stated intention to petition the IMF in a purely internal matter shows his naivety and immaturity. Has he exhausted all internal structures and processes? And, by the way, when did the IMF become our schoolmaster?

“Those who think we should bring the IMF in to resolve our internal matters suffer from colonial mentality, to say the least. The IMF may have jurisdiction over our ECF program, but certainly not over the appointment of our central bank governor.”

Ghana sports in complete disarray, deal with Pooley’s death

Felix Kwakye Ofosu and Kofi Adams Felix Kwakye Ofosu and Kofi Adams

Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has charged Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams, to ensure justice is served the family of late Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly referred to as Pooley.

According to him, hooliganism is a major challenge in the sporting sector and that the canker needs to be addressed.

The Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese bemoaned the dwindling fortunes of Ghana’s sports, which have led to public criticism.

Speaking in Parliament, Kwakye Ofosu expressed optimism that Kofi Adams’ appointment will result in changes in the sector.

“He[Kofi Adams] showed that he had a keen eye for talent, and he goes to a ministry where sporting talent is key to success. As we speak, Ghana’s sports sector is in complete disarray. Only yesterday, or the day before, a football fan who had gone to witness a football match did not return home alive.

“He [Pooley] lost his life under tragic circumstances, compelling a halt to the Ghanaian League. These are challenges that I believe he has the capacity to resolve, and therefore I wish him well in the endeavor,” he said.

This comes after Pooley was fatally stabbed during a melee at a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Kotoko on February 2, 2025.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have banned Nsoatreman from using their home venue and initiated a probe into the violent incident.

Korle Bu Hospital begins major overhaul of deteriorating morgue

0

The management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the largest referral medical facility in Ghana, has confirmed that its recent directive to temporarily suspend the acceptance of dead bodies and Brought-in-Dead (BID) cases at its morgue is being strictly adhered to.

The directive, which was announced on Monday, February 3, was implemented to facilitate a much-needed refurbishment of the hospital’s mortuary facilities.

The renovation, expected to span six weeks, is part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of its services and address infrastructural challenges that have plagued the facility over the years.

Speaking to Citi News, sources from the hospital’s Public Relations Unit emphasied that compliance with the directive has been widespread, with both hospital staff and the general public cooperating fully with the new guidelines.

This compliance, according to the hospital’s administration, has been instrumental in ensuring that the planned refurbishment proceeds smoothly without interruptions.

The decision to temporarily halt the acceptance of fresh corpses and BID cases was necessitated by the deteriorating state of the hospital’s morgue.

Over time, the facility has faced significant infrastructural and capacity challenges, prompting management to take action to upgrade and modernize the mortuary to better serve the public.

According to hospital authorities, the planned renovations will involve a comprehensive overhaul of key sections of the mortuary, including the refrigeration systems, storage compartments, and ventilation.

The upgrade is expected to improve the efficiency of the facility, ensuring better preservation of bodies and enhancing the overall conditions within the morgue.

A senior hospital official, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the mortuary’s cooling systems had been experiencing periodic malfunctions, leading to concerns about their ability to maintain optimal temperatures for body preservation.

Given these challenges, management saw it as imperative to take decisive action by suspending operations and embarking on the much-needed refurbishment.

You’ll fail if you take your know-it-all attitude to any ministry— Nitiwul counsels Mahama’s Ministers

0

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has admonished new ministers not to take their know-it-all attitude to the ministries they will head.

He counsels that they will fail woefully if they intend to look down on persons who have been working at the ministry for years.

Nitiwul made this known when he was addressing the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025.

Preparing Ghana’s Supply Chains for a 24-Hour Economy

0

As Ghana continues to evolve into a modern economic hub within West Africa and Africa at large, the concept of a 24-hour economy is gaining more attention than before. While it is not yet official policy, the potential of round-the-clock operations promises to revolutionize how businesses, supply chains, and consumers interact.

With growing urbanization, technological advancements, and increasing consumer demands, preparing for this shift is not just “Dwin Hw3 Kan”—it is essential for Ghana’s economic future.

The Potential Role of Just-In-Time (JIT) Strategy in a 24-Hour Economy

If Ghana were to transition to a 24-hour economy, the Just-In-Time (JIT) strategy would become an indispensable tool for streamlining operations. JIT minimizes inventory levels by ensuring goods are delivered exactly when needed, reducing waste and costs.

This approach would align perfectly with the demands of a 24/7 economy, where businesses would need to balance speed and efficiency without overstocking.

For example, retailers and logistics providers in Accra, Tamale, Western-Central and Kumasi could benefit from implementing JIT practices to meet consumer expectations for faster service while avoiding the financial burden of excessive inventory.

However, achieving this would require a robust infrastructure, reliable supplier networks, and investment in technology to track and manage inventory in real time. Preparing for such a framework now could ease the eventual transition when the 24-hour economy becomes a reality.

Preparing for Velocity: Anticipating Consumer Expectations

A 24-hour economy would bring an accelerated pace to Ghana’s supply chains. Customer expectations for rapid delivery, already evident in sectors like e-commerce and grocery delivery, would become the norm. Businesses must begin rethinking lead times and streamlining order-to-delivery cycles to adapt to this future demand.

Companies such as Jumia, Shopnaw, and supermarkets like Melcom and KFC can use the current landscape as a testing ground to refine their logistics capabilities and position themselves for a seamless shift when 24/7 operations become policy.

The Need for Agility and Resilience

Speed alone is not enough. Ghana’s businesses must prioritize building supply chains that are agile and resilient, able to withstand disruptions such as inconsistent road infrastructure, no rails, unpredictable fuel prices, and fluctuating market demands. Preparing for a 24-hour economy involves developing flexible resource allocation strategies, contingency plans, and robust partnerships to address potential challenges. For instance, logistics companies operating out of Tema and Takoradi ports can begin enhancing their capacity to handle increased trade flows and irregular operating hours.

Technology: The Foundation for 24/7 Readiness

Technology will be the cornerstone of Ghana’s ability to implement and sustain a 24-hour economy. While many businesses are already adopting solutions like real-time tracking, automated warehouses, and predictive analytics, scaling these technologies will be critical. Investing in IoT devices for visibility, blockchain for secure data sharing, and AI-powered demand forecasting tools will enable businesses to operate more efficiently and respond proactively to market trends.

Workforce Development: Preparing for 24/7 Operations

Transitioning to a 24-hour economy will have significant implications for workforce management. Businesses must begin preparing now by upskilling employees to handle advanced technologies and data-driven operations. Shift work and flexible scheduling will also require careful planning to ensure worker productivity and satisfaction. Establishing talent development programs in partnership with educational institutions and industry leaders can create a skilled workforce ready to support round-the-clock operations.

Collaboration as a Strategic Imperative

Ghana’s businesses must recognize that no single entity can prepare for or manage a 24-hour economy alone. Developing collaborative ecosystems that involve suppliers, logistics providers, technology vendors, and policymakers is essential. Early investments in building trust-based partnerships and integrating data-sharing mechanisms will provide a solid foundation for the coordinated planning and rapid response required in a future 24/7 operating environment.

Balancing Costs While Building Capacity

Preparing for a 24-hour economy also means balancing the costs of readiness with long-term profitability. Operating around the clock will increase expenses related to labour, energy, transportation, and technology. Companies must focus on optimizing processes now to avoid overburdening their budgets later. For example, exploring renewable energy options to power logistics hubs and adopting advanced inventory optimization techniques can mitigate operational costs while enhancing efficiency.

Charting the Path Ahead

Although Ghana has yet to officially implement a 24-hour economy, the groundwork for such a transformation must begin now. Businesses, policymakers, and supply chain leaders must align efforts to build the infrastructure, technological capacity, and workforce necessary for this shift. The benefits of a 24/7 economy—enhanced consumer satisfaction, increased productivity, and stronger global competitiveness—far outweigh the challenges, but only if the transition is thoughtfully planned and executed.

The future of Ghana’s economy is bright, and preparing for round-the-clock operations is a critical step toward achieving sustainable growth. By starting the journey today, Ghana can position itself as a leader in Africa’s supply chain innovation and ensure its readiness for a dynamic and competitive global marketplace.

All stakeholders should consider the Power of Now.

The time to act is now because in a 24/7 world, standing still is not an option.

PURC helps ECG to recover over GH¢29m from debtors

0

The Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG) has recovered over GH¢29 million from its debtors in the Greater Accra Region through the intervention of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The GH¢29,080,692.20 is out of a total indebtedness of GH¢33,807,691.20 for 2024, which was paid by 17 institutions – public and private.

Madam Gifty Bruce-Nelson, the Greater Accra Regional Manager, PURC, said this at a media briefing on the various interventions the Commission had undertaken to provide quality services to citizens and ensure utilities’ viability and sustainability.

She said the PURC, after writing to some customers to settle their debts to avoid disconnection, the 17 institutions, including Parliament, paid.

Madam Bruce-Nelson said some customers within the region in 2024 had some adjustments (financial payments) totaling GH¢867,535.67, made in their favour after lodging complaints against ECG to the Commission.

“In 2023, adjustments made and paid to customers amounted to GH¢634,167.48. We ensure that customers that have genuine cases are sorted out. Most often residential customers hardly owe huge amounts, it is the industries and government agencies,” she said.

Madam Bruce-Nelson said the regional office received a total of 1,444 complaints against regulated utilities during the year under review, out of which came 1,436 complaints, representing 99 per cent that had been resolved.

She said out of the 1,444 complaints, there were 1,151 against ECG, 207 against Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and 86 made by ECG against customers.

“In 2023 the regional office received total complaints of 1,726 and out of this 1,584 representing 92 per cent were resolved,” the Regional Manager said.

In a presentation on PURC’s Annual Year Complaints and Public Relations Activities for 2024, the sources of complaints were the electronic media with 778, phone-in complaints 267, written complaints 184, walk-in complaints 108, and field complaints 65.

Top among them was quality of service, billing, metering, consumer service delivery, and unlawful disconnection.

I will accept criticism but not curses from you – Ogyaba claps back at Prophet Oduro

0

Prophet Emmanuel Akwasi Boakye, also known as 'Ogyaba' Prophet Emmanuel Akwasi Boakye, also known as ‘Ogyaba’

Prophet Ogyaba has responded to Prophet Kofi Oduro’s criticisms following the revelation of the former’s extramarital affairs.

In a TikTok post on February 6, 2025, Ogyaba expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction of Oduro’s criticism, stating that the backlash was driven by hatred.

Quoting Ecclesiastes 7:20, Ogyaba warned that if Prophet Kofi Oduro wishes for his death, he reciprocates the same wish upon him.

“Words are powerful, so don’t take them lightly. If you come to insult me online, I will accept that, because your insults will have their consequences. But if you go online to curse me out of hatred, based on an issue you know nothing about, like a fool, I won’t tolerate that,” he fumed.

Ogyaba also asked Prophet Oduro to get the facts right about issues before judging.

“Kofi Oduro, the issue at hand is blackmail. If you want to know the truth, I took her to church, and she started taking advantage of my position. So, Mr. ‘Holy’ without sin, you can’t stand in church and wish for my miserable death. You will face that fate instead. Next time, don’t act like a robot. Don’t grow without wisdom. Every curse you throw at me will be returned to you,” he added.

What Prophet Kofi Oduro said

Earlier, Prophet Kofi Oduro condemned Prophet Ogyaba’s actions during one of his sermons, labelling them a disgrace to Christianity.

He emphasised that as a prophet, Prophet Ogyaba holds a position of great trust and his primary duty is to lead people to salvation and not astray.

“When you fall into adultery, you give others the chance to speak ill of God’s name,” Oduro stated. “As Christians, we must avoid behaviours that bring shame and tarnish God’s reputation. Some pastors have allowed people to speak badly about God’s work because of their actions,” he retorted.

He continued, “You have a wife, and someone comes to your church. Your duty is to guide them toward salvation, not to take advantage of them. Even if you are a false prophet, as long as you’re in charge of God’s flock, you must think wisely. It is not your role to take off her bra or abuse her.”

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu questions appointment of Chief of Staff for vice president

0

Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, has stirred debate over the designation of “Chief of Staff” within President John Mahama’s new administration.

In an exclusive interview on Abusua965FM, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu critiqued the nomenclature, suggesting it deviates from established norms and creates potential ambiguities.

“I think it’s a mistake in terms of nomenclature,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated plainly during the interview with Kojo Marfo on AbusuaNkommo at Abusua965FM. He elaborated on his concern, emphasizing the conventional understanding of the role. “Everywhere, a Chief of Staff is designated as such for the Presidency, not for the President personally. The Chief of Staff serves the Presidency, which includes the Office of the Vice President.”

He argued that having a Chief of Staff solely for the President, alongside another for the Vice President, creates confusion regarding seniority and overall responsibility.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu questioned the clarity of command and responsibility this structure implies.

“Who then is the overall Chief of Staff, and who is the Senior Chief of Staff?” he asked rhetorically. “I believe it’s simply a mistake in nomenclature. The person coordinating the Office of the Vice President cannot rightfully be called a Chief of Staff, maybe coordinator or coordinator general for the vice president’s office”.

He added “But to designate someone as Chief of staff at the President’s office, implying that the Chief of staff serves only the President, and then have another chief of staff for vice President, raises questions”.

The comments come in the wake of President Mahama’s recent appointments, which include Julius Debrah as Chief of Staff. Another key figure named to the President-elect’s office is Dr. Callistus Mahama as Executive Secretary to the President.

However, a presidential communication signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, acting as the president’s spokesperson, announced the appointment of the Office of the Vice President. Alex Perceval Segbefia will serve as the Chief of Staff. Alberta Graham will also be appointed Head of Administration.

New NAFCO CEO pledges to ensure food availability and price stability

0

The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), George Abradu Otoo, has vowed to reposition the company to ensure consistent food availability and contribute to price stability in the domestic market.

This will be done through the implementation of existing and introduction of new initiatives to curb inflation.

Currently, the country’s 13 of the top 15 inflation-driving items are food-related.

NAFCO, a wholly government-owned entity, is tasked with purchasing surplus maize, rice, millet, beans, sorghum, and soybeans from farmers, preserving these staples, and distributing them to state institutions.

Speaking exclusively to the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a handover ceremony in Accra on Monday, February 3, Mr. Abradu-Otoo, an agricultural expert, outlined his vision for the company.

“Our focus is to fulfill our mandate by ensuring greater public access to foodstuffs, storing them for the lean season, and guaranteeing fair prices for farmers,” he said.

Despite advancements over the years, food insecurity remains a pressing issue in Ghana, with the World Food Programme (WFP) estimating that over one million people in the country are food insecure, while one million children under five are chronically malnourished.

Mr Abradu-Otoo reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening NAFCO’s operations by diligently working towards supporting the Government’s reset agenda through ensuring that food security was a tangible reality for all Ghanaians.

He acknowledged that while the company’s framework appeared solid on paper, a thorough review of its operations and financials was necessary to effectively reposition the buffer stock system.

Mr Abradu-Otoo commended the outgoing CEO and the NAFCO Board for laying a strong foundation and pledged to build on their achievements.

He expressed his intention to leverage the expertise of the outgoing CEO, the Board Chair, and all relevant stakeholders to enhance the company’s role in ensuring food security.

Hanan Abdul-Wahab, the immediate past CEO, urged his successor to prioritise initiatives that would improve long-term storage infrastructure.

Addressing NAFCO staff, Mr Abdul-Wahab said, “This marks a new phase for NAFCO. Give your full support to the new leadership in the interest of Ghana.”

Reflecting on his nearly eight-year tenure, he stated that there had been expansion of licensed buying companies from 100 to 1,200 and the extension of operations to all 16 regions, up from the previous three regional centres in Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, and Northern regions.

Additionally, NAFCO’s storage capacity has grown to 100,000 metric tonnes, thanks to rehabilitation efforts and the One District-One Warehouse initiative.

The company also played a critical role in the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, supplying food items to over 700 secondary schools nationwide.

You are being lazy – Kofi Adams slams Appointments Committee of Parliament

0

Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate

Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, has delivered a brutal assessment of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, asserting that the actions of the committee and their members are inconsistent with established parliamentary procedures.

Speaking as a panellist on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program, Kofi Adams noted that the current Appointments Committee have dropped the level of importance and seriousness attached to the vetting process and in doing so, created discomfort for some people, particularly the ministerial nominees.

He likened their conduct to that of a meeting in a village, describing their actions so far as ‘lazy’ and unbefitting of one of Parliament’s most prominent committees.

Speaking on the chaos that rocked the house on Thursday, January 30, 2025, Kofi Adams opined that if the narrative by the Minority caucus is to be accepted as the true account of events, then the committee has been ‘lazy’ in the discharge of their duties.

“The Appointments Committee have done a poor job by scheduling something they know they cannot follow. They will hold their own meeting and plan something without communicating to persons they have already invited. That’s a very lazy way of talking.

“If that’s what they said, then I would not be charitable with it. Parliament is an organized institution and we don’t behave that way. We are not running some village setting meetings.

“We are running a serious business, so you don’t schedule nominees to appear before you and then hold another meeting without communicating the changes to the persons, and when they appear there, you describe them as being smuggled. This Appointments Committee have done a lot of harm to people,” he said.

Background:

There was a clash between the Minority and Majority caucuses during the recent vettings, resulting in property damage within the parliamentary chamber. The conflict arose when the Majority sought to extend the vetting session beyond 10 PM, a move the Minority opposed, insisting that the day’s proceedings should conclude as scheduled.

This disagreement escalated, with members from both sides engaging in verbal exchanges that devolved into physical confrontations. Reports indicate that tables were overturned, and microphones were damaged during the melee.

In response to the chaos, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin took decisive action by suspending four Members of Parliament implicated in the disturbances. The suspended MPs include Mr. Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip Jerry Shaibu, and Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli.

The suspension has so far been reversed with the committee also suspending their investigations into the chaos.

Why Archbishop Duncan-Williams cried after seeing Akufo-Addo, Mahama together

0

The Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has revealed that he shed tears during the transitional period of change of government when he saw former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President John Dramani Mahama together in a happy mood.

According to him, seeing the two statesmen sharing a happy moment made him feel better and brought tears of joy.

He explained that as a country, there is a need for leaders, regardless of political affiliation, to join forces and make the country better.

He also dismissed claims by critics that the warm exchange between Akufo-Addo and Mahama, which captured a lighthearted moment between them, was merely a publicity stunt for the cameras.

The preacher is seen addressing his congregation in a viral video, insisting that regardless of whether the moment was staged for the cameras, witnessing them together was a positive sign for the nation.

“When I saw President Nana Akufo-Addo and the incoming President John Dramani Mahama, taking pictures and shaking hands; tears were flowing from my eyes, and I said, this is all we want to see.

“Even if you think it was fake, those of you who have your own thoughts and minds and don’t believe in anything good… even when you saw that they were sitting together, you were saying it was faked. Don’t mind them.

“Whether it was fake or real, the fact that the two of them could sit together like we saw the President of America and President Trump sitting together in the White House, I saw the two of them sitting together like that,” he said.

He added, “And they shook hands, and when I saw those pictures, I said, God, my heart yearns to see more of this, where our leaders can truly come together and realize that it is not about them and their political party but it is about the country and the good of the citizens.”

IMF team expected in town over talks on economy and 2025 Budget

0

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team is expected in Accra Ghana from this weekend, February 8, 2025 to hold crucial discussions with government.

The discussions will center on the economy and the 2025 Budget, which sources say will be presented in Parliament in March 2025.

Other issues on the agenda during the five-day visit and meetings will be an assessment of progress made by government on negotiations with External Commercial Creditors and the Energy Sector debts.

In addition, the IMF would seek some clarity on government’s plans to deal with the country’s energy situation and talks about privatising parts of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) operations.

Fourth Review and IMF visit

Sources have told JOYBUSINESS the visit is not a Review Mission, but an engagement that will focus mainly on the economy and the 2025 Budget.

The IMF is expected to carry out the fourth review of Ghana’s programme later this year.

The review, will be based on fiscal data on the economy ending December 2024.

If Ghana passes the test, the IMF will release another tranche of cash to the Bank of Ghana around June this year.

2025 Budget and discussions on the economy

As part of the assessment, the IMF will ensure that the 2025 Budget is in line with the Fund’s programme with Ghana, particularly to improve revenue mobilization.

Ghana’s programme with the IMF is centered on revenue mobilization and reducing the country’s debt stock to sustainable levels.

Sources say the team will for instance seek clarity on government’s plans to fill the revenue hole that will be created, if the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson goes ahead to remove taxes like the Betting Tax, Covid-19 Levy and the E-Levy.

It is estimated that Ghana could lose about 10 billion cedis every year, if the Finance Minister goes ahead to remove the taxes.

Also, the team will seek more answers on plans to re-set the economy and its impact the overall programme.

Programme Extension and more funding from the IMF

Dr.  Forson recently disclosed plans to push for an extension of the programme to seek additional funds to help stabilize the economy.

The visit will therefore offer both government and the IMF an opportunity to finalize discussions on this proposal.

The IMF has maintained that even though it is opened to talks aimed at reviewing the programme, any agreement that will be reached, must be in line with the broader focus of the programme.

Ghana’s Programme with the IMF

Since Ghana signed up to the IMF programme in May 2023, it has received about US$1.9 billion to support the economy.

The IMF in a statement after Ghana passed the third review, described the programme performance as generally satisfactory, with remarkable progress on debt restructuring.

“Economic growth in the first half of 2024 exceeded expectations, inflation has continued to decline, and the fiscal and external positions have showed marked improvements”, it added.

Watch moment Dominic Ntiwul’s microphone went off while talking about ‘looting’ of state lands

Member of Parliament of Bimilla, Dominic Ntiwul play videoMember of Parliament of Bimilla, Dominic Ntiwul

The Member of Parliament of Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, encountered an unexpected interruption while addressing Parliament on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

This was while he was in the middle of challenging some comments made by the Chairman of the ORAL team, who also serves as the Member of Parliament of North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, regarding a disclosure he made during his vetting, to the effect that he resides in a rented apartment at Airport Hills in Accra.

Dominic Nitiwul questioned how Okudzeto Ablakwa could afford such a residence.

“The people of Ghana are still demanding answers. It will help him, this process, and every politician, if he can tell the people of Ghana where he’s getting the money to rent that property at Airport Hills,” he stated.

He then shifted focus to the ORAL team, urging them to investigate state lands that had been allegedly looted.

“Mr. Speaker, I commend them for deciding to carry out ORAL work. I commend you. But I want to ensure a committee is properly set up in accordance with the law to do this job. I want them to start with Borteyman. Check the lands allocated between 2014, 2015, and 2016. Who among the members benefited from Borteyman?

“Mr. Chairman of ORAL, I want you to look into the Aviation lands, that large area at Madina. Go into the Aviation land and find out who owns it. Also, investigate the land opposite the military cemetery,” he added.

However, just as Nitiwul continued listing additional state lands that needed scrutiny, his microphone abruptly went off.

“Mr. Speaker, someone is turning off the mic, please, let’s respect ourselves!”, he exclaimed.

This prompted the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, to step in.

“Honorable members, When I say this, you get flared up at times. We are doing government business, we have to finish and leave and your own members are putting on their mics,” he stated.

During the recent vetting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, he disclosed that he has been living in a rented apartment at Airport Hills for the past eight years.

Asante Kotoko call on GPL clubs to join fight against Hooliganism after Pooley’s death

0

Asante Kotoko has taken a strong stance against violence, hooliganism, and lawlessness in Ghanaian football, urging all clubs to join forces in eliminating these threats to the integrity of Ghana football.

Their club’s call follows the tragic death of their supporter, Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.

In a statement addressing recent incidents, the Porcupine Warriors emphasized that football should unite rather than divide, calling on their fiercest rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak, and other clubs to rally behind efforts to secure the future of Ghana’s domestic league.

“It is time to end the cycle of violence, hooliganism, and lawlessness that threatens the integrity of our game. We call on all clubs to support this cause, especially our greatest rivals on the pitch, Accra Hearts of Oak, because this is bigger than the competition—it is about securing the future of our domestic league once and for all.”

Pooley, a dedicated Kotoko supporter, tragically lost his life during violent scenes at Nana Koramansah Park, sparking outrage among fans and football stakeholders. Kotoko has since withdrawn from the Ghana Premier League until justice is served and concrete measures are put in place to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The Clerk to Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobbah, has disclosed that her husband urged her to leave Parliament on the night of Thursday, January 30, 2025, when tensions escalated during proceedings.

She noted that before the session resumed, she had relayed instructions from both the Committee Chairman and the Minority Chief Whip. However, disorder erupted in the chamber during the vetting of Joseph Bukari Nikpe, transport minister.

Testifying before the investigative committee probing the disturbances on February 5, 2025, Jiagge-Gobbah detailed the dramatic moments that unfolded during the vetting session.

“I wasn’t feeling right, so I called my boss and pleaded with him to come. Within minutes, he arrived, and I briefed him on the situation, that was when the insults began. I stood there, shocked at what was happening,” she said.

“…they were screaming at me, but I needed a directive from my boss. Without instructions, I couldn’t proceed,” she explained.

According to her, she received urgent messages from her husband.

“At the tail end, as the Majority tried to mediate, I received three calls and a message from my dear husband instructing me to leave immediately. I followed his advice and left,” she stated.

Following her testimony, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin directed the investigative committee to suspend its sitting.

Cashew traders cautioned on illegal exports

0

The Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) has cautioned persons and companies exporting raw cashew nuts (RCN) without registration and licence to desist from the act.

An announcement to all cashew exporters by the TCDA stated that the act constitutes a violation of laws governing the country’s cashew export trade and stipulated sanctions.

The TCDA expressed worry over the surge in illegal exports which have been contributing to the high volume of raw cashew nut trade from the country.

Previous export ban

Back in 2016, government experimented with an export ban on raw cashew in order to encourage homegrown processing.

However, the policy had to be abandoned within a couple of weeks after vociferous protests from farmers and traders.

Incidence of increasing cashew exports

Ghana remains the third -exporter of unprocessed cashew nuts in the world – behind Ivory Coast in first place and Cambodia in second.

As a whole, the country grows some 180,000 tonnes of the commodity annually. Worryingly, almost 90 percent of the cashew produced is exported in its raw form.

The Africa Cashew Alliance has said Ghana generates some US$300million in export revenues each year.

However, the Alliance maintains there could be significantly higher returns if the commodity is processed to add value.

Absence of value addition

The lack of value addition in the cashew sector has warranted cashew farmers’ sole reliance on exporting the raw nuts, since that is the only viable option to make money.

Last month, the Cashew Traders and Exporters Association of Ghana expressed concern over unlawful practices by some unauthorised foreign traders in the market.

The Association claimed foreign traders were manipulating the market by purchasing the commodity at inflated prices, thereby undermining established trade practices.

This activity, the local association has said, may potentially lead to local cashew industry’s collapse.

The Association claims foreign players are unlawfully purchasing cashew as high as GH¢25.00, significantly exceeding the official selling price of GH¢15.00 per kilogramme.

“These foreign dealers are currently trading in the local market instead of exporting the commodity,” an official of the Association, Kwabena Owusu, indicated.

He said lack of and little prospects in the cashew processing chain is partly to blame as individual businesses are not empowered to undertake processing.

“This is one of the key reasons why illegal trade in the commodity will continue to soar, since the major option available is to sell the raw nuts to foreigners instead of processing – which is cost consuming, Kwabena Owusu noted.

Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, former Member of Parliament Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, former Member of Parliament

Former Nsoatreman FC General Manager, Eric Alagidede, has defended club owner Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, rejecting claims that he incited violence during the Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.

Baffour-Awuah, a former Member of Parliament and minister of state is facing legal scrutiny after appearing in court alongside two others in connection with the violent incidents that led to the tragic death of Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley. As a result, travel restrictions have been placed on him.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Alagidede described Baffour Awuah as a passionate football enthusiast and a known supporter of Asante Kotoko, insisting that he would never encourage harm against the club.

“I know Ignatius Baffour Awuah is passionate about football. He always wants to win, but I don’t think he can even hurt a fly or incite violence,” Alagidede stated.

“He is a known Kotoko fan and used to contribute to the club to help buy players. He is the last person who would want to harm Kotoko.”

The violent clashes at Nana Konamansah Park, which followed the match between Nsoatreman and Kotoko, have sparked outrage, prompting swift action from the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The GFA has since suspended the venue and charged Nsoatreman FC over the disturbances.

With tensions still running high, Alagidede’s remarks seek to clarify Baffour-Awuah’s position as investigations into the incident continue.

Dr. Johnson Asiama is highly qualified to lead Bank of Ghana – Kwakye Ofosu

Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has asserted that the nomination of Dr. Johnson Asiama as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana remains valid.

He expressed confidence in the government’s nomination of Dr. Asiama, emphasising that his qualifications make him a strong candidate to lead the apex bank.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on February 5, 2025, the Minister-designate for Government Communications highlighted Dr. Johnson Asiama’s expertise and experience in economics and finance.

“He is a well-known economic and finance expert with significant acumen. He has previously served as the second deputy governor of the BoG, making him uniquely qualified to hold the position of governor.

“That is what President Mahama considered in appointing him to the position, and we believe that he will do an excellent job,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

He further pointed out that the government remains unperturbed by the Minority’s opposition to the appointment, adding that stakeholders within the financial sector and economy understand the pertinent issues.

“The government is not concerned. All stakeholders within the financial sector and the economy are well-grounded and fully aware of the realities regarding the economy and national finances.

“They also understand that political actors often engage in grandstanding and theatrics to further their political interests.

“I do not believe that any serious investor or key player in the Ghanaian economy will make decisions based on the Minority’s concerns, which are neither well-founded nor motivated by genuine economic considerations,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament, led by its leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is calling for a review of the nomination and has hinted at plans to petition the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding Dr. Johnson Asiama’s appointment as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

They have raised concerns about the legality of his appointment and questioned his integrity.

Dr. Asiama’s nomination by President John Dramani Mahama is currently pending consultation and approval by the Council of State, following Dr. Ernest Addison’s decision to proceed on terminal leave ahead of his retirement in March 2025.

Chornobyl dogs’ genetic differences not due to mutation, study finds

The study has implications for understanding the effects of environmental contamination on populations over time.

Investigators rescue around 20,000 protected animals from smugglers

0

Paris, Feb 4, (dpa/GNA) – Investigators have rescued almost 20,000 animals of endangered or protected species, in an operation against the smuggling of wild animals. The animals were initially taken to protection centres, before some of them were allowed to return home.

They included more than 12,000 birds and more than 5,000 turtles, the Lyon-based international police organization Interpol announced on Tuesday. The investigators also rescued 18 big cats and 12 pangolins.

According to Interpol’s web site, “such species are illegally trafficked to meet specific market demands, whether for food, perceived medicinal benefits, ‘luxury’ and collector items or as pets and competition animals.”

During the multi-week operation in 138 countries and regions around the world, investigators arrested 365 suspects. They identified six international networks allegedly involved in the smuggling of protected animals and plants. A good 100 companies that could be involved in the smuggling have also been uncovered.

Interpol says environmental crimes are particularly destructive. “Organized crime networks are profiting from the demand for rare plants and animals, exploiting nature to fuel human greed,” said Interpol Chief Valdecy Urquiza.

This drives the loss of biodiversity, destroys communities, contributes to climate change and fuels conflict and instability.

Why Annoh-Dompreh raised Hardcastle’s verbal attack in Parliament despite her apology

0

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has revealed why he still went ahead to raise the matter of the verbal assault on him by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Emeafa Hardcastle, on the floor of Parliament after she had walked up to him and apologized.

According to the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire, Hardcastle reportedly made further disparaging comments against him as she walked away after saying sorry.

“When I was leaving, two people came to me and said that when the lady was exiting the room, she made another damning comment—that if she had insulted me, so be it. This was told to me by an elderly person I have no reason to doubt. They had no basis to lie. The person told me that when the woman said that, he confronted her and asked if she was not the same person who had just apologized. Then, she showed another fleeting remorse.

“The person also told me that if the matter is heard by the Speaker, he is ready to testify that the lady indeed uttered those words. So, when I left the place, I told myself that I had to raise the matter in the plenary because, as a lawyer, she ought to behave well—lawyers have a code of ethics.”

Frank Annoh Dompreh further disclosed that all the women on the Appointments Committee walked up to him to apologize on Hardcastle’s behalf, denouncing her conduct.

“All the ladies on the vetting committee came and knelt before me, saying they had all seen what had transpired. I was angry, but at that moment, I was just praying. I asked myself, with everything I had gone through during this election—moving here and there, ending up at the Supreme Court, being falsely accused of firing a gun, and enduring all sorts of propaganda allegations—what was really happening in my life? I was just consoling myself and decided to leave everything to God.

“Then suddenly, the lady herself came to me. She spoke Ewe, and I responded to her in Ewe. She was alarmed by that. I told her I grew up in the Volta Region, and Ewes don’t behave the way she did. She asked that we have lunch together, but I told her I was okay. I decided to let sleeping dogs lie. It was only when she was leaving that she made further derogatory remarks against me,” Annoh Dompreh said.

Last week, Frank Annoh-Dompreh urged the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to issue consequential orders summoning the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Emeafa Hardcastle, before the Privileges Committee of Parliament once it is constituted.

This followed a heated exchange between Annoh-Dompreh and Hardcastle on Tuesday, January 28, during a break in the vetting proceedings of the Parliamentary Appointments Committee.

Tensions flared after Mrs. Hardcastle referred to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus as a “micro-minority,” a term that allegedly offended Mr. Annoh-Dompreh.

In response, the Minority Chief Whip allegedly threatened to take Hardcastle on, a statement she did not take lightly.

“You are threatening me that you will take me on because you are who? My friend, don’t bring yourself. What do you mean you are taking me on?” she fumed.

Annoh-Dompreh, however, emphasized the offensive nature of the words used by the acting CEO to describe his caucus.

“You called us a micro-minority?” the MP questioned.

“But you are a micro-minority. Doesn’t Afenyo (Minority Leader) himself use that phrase?” Hardcastle retorted.

“You think you can bully me here?” she added.

Amidst the melee created by their encounter, the MP accused the acting CEO of referring to him as “silly.”

“Please, please, please. You cannot call me silly… We will deal with this matter,” he stated.

Addressing the issue on the floor of Parliament, the Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP expressed dissatisfaction with Hardcastle’s conduct, describing her remarks as disrespectful and unbefitting of her position.

He urged the Speaker of Parliament to intervene and ensure the issue is fully resolved.

“I am told she is a lawyer, and I was surprised by the attitude she displayed. Mr. Speaker, I am respectfully bringing this to your attention and further inviting you to take action. I am fully aware that we have not yet constituted our committees. However, pending the formation of the Privileges Committee, I am pleading with you, Mr. Speaker. I know you are passionate about Parliament and the respect we must command in society as an arm of government. I humbly urge you to make consequential orders to ensure that this matter is addressed appropriately.”

Haruna Iddrisu, the MP for Tamale South, also commented on the issue before Parliament.

He expressed his displeasure with Hardcastle’s remarks, stating that they undermined Annoh-Dompreh’s standing as an elected MP.

The former Minority Leader urged Hardcastle to issue a public apology and advised the Minority Chief Whip to exercise restraint to prevent the situation from escalating.

“The justified request made by the Minority Whip regarding this conduct suggests damage to his reputation as an elected Member of Parliament. Mr. Speaker, as I listened to him, I share the sentiments expressed by the Honorable MP for Damongo that this House must stand united in condemning such conduct and demanding an apology. However, I also urge our colleague to reconsider pursuing the matter further before the Privileges Committee, allowing for an amicable resolution,” he stated.
