Ace sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah has cautioned Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams against his removing the betting tax.

According to him, revenue from the betting tax could be invested in sports development projects, improving the dwindling standards of Ghanaian sports.

The Peace FM journalist emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama should maintain the betting tax to create more job opportunities for the youth through investments in sports.

Kwaku Yeboah urged the sporting fraternity and the general public to support Kofi Adams as sports minister and retain the betting tax.

“We should put politics aside and support Kofi Adams. Instead of cancelling the betting tax, the revenue should be channelled into sports development. Our sports will thrive with financial investment, creating jobs for the youth,” he said in Twi on Peace FM.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has assured the public that scrapping the betting tax would be one of his first acts in office.

The story of one of Ghana’s richest men, George ‘Opesika’ Aggudey

0

In the early 2000s, one name was synonymous with wealth, opulence, and power in the person of George ‘Opesika’ Aggudey.

He was a towering figure in Ghana’s business and political landscape. He was admired for his business success, lavish lifestyle, and ambition for national leadership.

As the flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in the 2004 elections, he aspired to revive the vision of Kwame Nkrumah, but his journey took a dramatic turn, one that ended in disgrace and personal misfortune.

In 2006, ace broadcaster Bola Ray embarked on an exclusive tour of Agudey’s 11-bedroom mansion in Accra, offering the public a rare glimpse into the extravagant life of the businessman-turned-politician.

His mansion was more than just a residence as it served as a sanctuary for luxury and high-end automobiles.

With a fleet of over thirty luxury vehicles parked on his compound, George Aggudey’s collection included Porsche’s, Mercedes-Benz, BMWs, and a variety of SUVs.

Although his love for luxury was evident, he remained careful about car ownership in Ghana and its associated perks.

“American cars used to be my favorite, but servicing them in Ghana is a problem, so I will stick to BMW and Mercedes,” he told Bola Ray.

“In this country, you have to be careful about the cars you buy because eventually, you will face the servicing bills. You have to buy cars that can be handled easily,” he advised.

Despite his luxurious lifestyle, George ‘Opesika’ Aggudey also saw himself as a patriot and an advocate for Ghana’s progress as he campaigned as the CPP’s presidential candidate in 2004.

He pushed a vision of economic transformation and social equity.

George Aggudey’s speeches often emphasised nation-building and the responsibility of every citizen in shaping Ghana’s future.

“However young or old you are, you must think and feel Ghanaian, and you must also understand that it will take the concerted effort of every single Ghanaian to make sure we have a country called Ghana to live in,” he once stated.

But despite his political ambitions, his campaign never gained enough traction, and his dream of leading Ghana never fully materialised.

While Aggudey projected an image of success and prosperity, trouble was brewing behind the scenes.

In 2013, his name made headlines, not for politics or business success, but for financial misconduct.

He was convicted by an Accra Circuit Court and sentenced to three months in prison for failing to pay over GH¢2.6 million in Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions for workers at Gocrest Security Company, a business venture he owned.

Despite his immense wealth and luxurious lifestyle, George Aggudey neglected the welfare of his employees, leading to his dramatic downfall.

The court not only sentenced him to prison but also ordered him to repay all outstanding debts owed to his workers and SSNIT contributions.

Following the court proceedings, he began to serve his jail term immediately, marking a stunning fall from grace.

As if the legal troubles weren’t enough, George Aggudey also faced bitter family conflicts as his wife Florence Nardu Agudey accused him of siphoning large sums of money from Gocrest Security Company to finance his extravagant lifestyle.

She took him to court, alleging that he had used company funds to buy fleets of luxury cars and acquire expensive real estate, while she, a 50 percent shareholder of the business, had struggled financially.

She further claimed that George Aggudey had cut off all communication with her for four years, ignoring her calls and letters.

Following his release from prison, George ‘Opesika’ Aggudey disappeared from the public eye with his political influence also fading.

Additionally, his once-thriving business empire crumbled while friends and associates distanced themselves from him, marking a tragic fall for the man who once symbolized wealth and power, became a shadow of himself.

In December 2023, George Opesika Aggudey passed away quietly with his final years reported to have been marked by hardship and isolation.

Once celebrated for his lavish lifestyle and political aspirations, he was ultimately remembered as a cautionary tale of how power, wealth, and ambition can quickly unravel when mismanagement and legal troubles come into play.

But a daunting question remains; Would Ghana have been different under his leadership as president?

While that question remains unanswered, one thing is certain; his life embodied both the heights of success and the depths of downfall.

President Mahama directs Energy minister to end Eni and Springfield’s unitisation dispute

0

The Herald has gathered reports, indicating that the Mahama government, has asked for the withdrawal of the proposed unitisation between Eni’s Sankofa Gye Nyame (SGN) Field and Springfield’s West Cape Three Points (WCTP) Afina discovery, and it is to happen by the end of this week.

This development, follows a meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and Eni’s Chief Executive Officer, Claudio Descalzi, in Accra on Friday to discuss the country’s oil and gas industry.

Reports suggest that, the directive for the withdrawal was issued long before last Friday’s meeting, though the Energy Ministry, has reportedly delayed implementing it.

The decision to withdraw the unitization, is aimed at encouraging Eni, which had shifted its operations to neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire, to fully resume activities in Ghana, following the exit of the Akufo-Addo administration.

The Herald understands that a firm directive has been issued from the Presidency to the Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, to withdraw the unitisation order issued by the previous government.

This order had been the subject of a legal dispute between Eni Ghana Exploration and Production Ltd and Springfield Exploration & Production Ltd since 2020.

Over the weekend, The Herald learned that the Energy Ministry, the Attorney General, and the Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, have been discussing President Mahama’s stance on the withdrawal directive.

The Energy Ministry and the Attorney General’s office, led by Dr Dominic Ayine, have deliberated on the language of the withdrawal directive. Former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu initially issued this directive, which was widely perceived to favour Springfield Exploration & Production Ltd. The debate also centred on which ministry should issue the new directive.

It has now been decided that the Energy Ministry will issue the new directive, with Mr. Jinapor expected to execute it by the end of the week.

At the meeting with President Mahama, Mr Descalzi highlighted the successes of the Offshore Cape Three Points project (OCTP), which he described as the most significant private investment in Ghana’s oil sector.

The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, with the first oil in 2017 and the first gas in 2018. Gas from the OCTP project is fully allocated for Ghana’s domestic consumption, ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply and contributing approximately 70% of Ghana’s domestic gas production.

Additionally, Eni has brought to President Mahama’s attention new short and medium-term exploration and development opportunities. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss Eni’s broader economic diversification plans in Ghana.

Eni has been operating in Ghana since 2009. It holds a 44.4% stake in the OCTP project, partnering with Vitol (35.6%) and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (20%). Its projects also include initiatives in training, economic diversification, access to water and sanitation, and energy accessibility.

In August last year, employees of Eni Ghana Exploration and Production Ltd expressed concerns over the unitisation of the Afina discovery and the Sankofa field. The General Transport, Petroleum, and Chemical Workers Union petitioned the then Minister of Energy, stating, “We have observed with grave concern that the State’s failure to resolve this issue and bring a decisive conclusion to the matter has significantly impacted the investment climate of the OCTP Project, including the general upstream business environment, resulting in potential job losses for our members.”

The Union, which has been closely following the unitisation directives and subsequent legal proceedings initiated by Springfield against Eni and Vitol, has been critical of the Akufo-Addo government’s handling of the issue. It has called for the withdrawal of the unitisation directive following a ruling by the International Arbitral Tribunal under the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce on July 8, 2024.

According to the Union, “This Award determined that Ghana breached its laws and the OCTP Petroleum Agreement by issuing the directive for the unitisation of the Afina discovery and Sankofa field.”

The petition, dated August 8, 2024, urged the Energy Minister to act swiftly: “We respectfully request that your good self intervene in this matter as a matter of urgency by retracting the directives regarding the Unitization Directives until all the parameters for unitization are fulfilled.”

The General Secretary of the Union, Fuseini Iddrisu, emphasized that withdrawing the directives would help restore investor confidence, prevent job losses, and encourage continued investment in Ghana’s oil sector.

In 2021, Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice were formally notified of arbitration proceedings initiated by Eni and Vitol under the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). The arbitration hearing took place in August 2023, and on July 8, 2024, the Arbitral Tribunal ruled in favour of Eni and Vitol, affirming their opposition to the unitisation directives.

The Tribunal found that the directives were unlawful and in violation of Ghanaian law and the OCTP Petroleum Agreement.

Key findings included:

· The directives did not align with Ghana’s legal framework and the Petroleum Act.

· Essential elements required for unitisation, such as dynamic communication and a straddling accumulation, were not established.

· The imposed unitisation terms violated procedural and substantive legal requirements.

· The technical evaluation used to justify unitisation was flawed.

· The allocation of tract participation percentages was erroneous.

Furthermore, the Tribunal preserved Eni/Vitol’s right to claim damages if the unitisation directives were enforced, stating that Ghana would be liable for full damages should it proceed with enforcement.

The continued imposition of the unitisation directive has had significant negative impacts on Ghana’s investment climate, oil production, and employment. Since 2017, no new oil and gas field developments have occurred. The delay in signing petroleum agreements from the 2019 licensing round has contributed to declining production rates in existing fields such as Jubilee, TEN, and Sankofa.

The OCTP project, initially expected to produce 40,000 barrels per day, has seen output drop to approximately 23,000 barrels per day due to a lack of investment. This decline has also affected state revenue, with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) expected to lift fewer oil cargoes in 2024 compared to previous years.

Additionally, Eni Ghana and its partners contribute significantly to Ghana’s economy through taxes, salaries, and job creation. The OCTP project supports more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. However, the ongoing legal and investment uncertainties threaten these jobs and the overall stability of the sector.

As Ghana moves towards resolving this longstanding dispute, the withdrawal of the unitisation directive is expected to restore investor confidence, encourage further investments, and safeguard jobs in the oil sector.

The Energy Ministry’s anticipated directive, will also be crucial in setting the stage for a renewed partnership with Eni and its partners to ensure the sustainable development of Ghana’s petroleum resources.

Our boycott of Ghana Premier League will continue until we see major changes

0

Communications Director of Asante Kotoko, Samuel Sarfo Duku, has noted that the club have not rescinded the decision to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League after the death of a staunch fan Nana Pooley.

He clarified that the decision to withdraw is an effort to seek reforms and that until the objective is achieved, the decision remains unchanged.

He acknowledged and lauded the Ghana Police Service for the swift actions taken including the multiple arrests made in connection with the death of Pooley.

“They (the Police) have just started, let’s wait and see where things will get to. For now, it’s too early to say that we have rescinded our decision. We are saying that we want to see that the Police are getting somewhere and hopefully they will get there,” he told 3Sports.

“So far six arrests have been made and it’s refreshing. But let’s wait and see where things will get to. I don’t think that Kotoko is saying they will not play football again. No, that’s not what we are saying.”

Sarfo Duku reiterated that losing a fan should compel and inspire major reforms in the league.

“We kept complaining that things were not in good shape but unfortunately, we didn’t get the appropriate response. We believe that we have lost a soul, so it will compel the stakeholders that things are not really going well. We want to see major reforms in the game.”

Asante Kotoko in a statement released on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, announced their withdrawal from the GPL.

The club have suspended all first-team football activities but juvenile activities will continue as required.

“Asante Kotoko wish to state that all footballing activities of the senior team are on hold until further notice. Our stance remains unchanged; we will not resume footballing duties until justice is served, and concrete steps are taken to prevent such barbaric acts from ever happening again,” the club wrote.

“In the meantime, management has decided to suspend all activities relating to football on the pitch until further investigations into the matter. However, our juvenile team and players recovering from injuries who require rehab will be allowed at our training centre

Prof. Kobby Mensah calls for structured valuation of Ghana’s cultural assets

0

Professor Kobby Mensah, Acting Chief Executive Officer of GTDC Professor Kobby Mensah, Acting Chief Executive Officer of GTDC

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company Ltd. (GTDC), Professor Kobby Mensah, has called for an urgent need for Ghana to develop a structured approach to valuing its cultural assets, including cocoa, folklore, festivals, and artefacts.

He argued that while Ghana has long benefited from cocoa’s economic contributions, it lacks a formalized recognition of its cultural and historical significance.

To address this, Prof. Mensah proposed a formula for determining the value of a cocoa bean, which he summarized as STU. In this formula, STU represents the Sum of the Total Use of Cocoa, ny1 denotes the number of years cocoa has been in existence, and ny2 projects the number of years it will continue to exist.

He acknowledged that while the formula requires further scrutiny and refinement, it would provide a quantifiable basis for assessing the significance of cocoa beyond its market price. This, he explained, would help policymakers, investors, and cultural stakeholders make informed decisions about the future of Ghana’s cocoa heritage.

Prof. Kobby Mensah made the call at the launch of the National Chocolate Week, organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in Accra on Friday, 6 February 2025.

He commended the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts and the Ghana Tourism Authority for their efforts in promoting cocoa as a valuable cultural asset through the Chocolate Week celebration.

Prof. Mensah also lauded the Ministry and GTA’s efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of cocoa, which remains one of Ghana’s most treasured cultural assets. He emphasized that cocoa is more than just an economic product—it is deeply woven into the cultural and historical fabric of the country.

Outlining GTDC’s strategic vision under his leadership, Prof. Mensah categorized the company’s mandate into four key investment and development areas:

1. Investment in Tourism Physical Infrastructure – Developing world-class tourism sites, facilities, and accommodations to enhance Ghana’s attractiveness as a global tourism destination.

2. Investment in Human Capital – Strengthening capacity-building within the tourism sector to ensure skilled professionals drive growth and service excellence.

3. Investment in Cultural Assets – Promoting and preserving Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, including festivals, folklore, and traditional art forms.

4. Investment in Technology and Innovation – Leveraging digital transformation to enhance tourism experiences and improve service delivery within the sector.

The Chocolate Week initiative was introduced as part of a broader effort to increase local consumption of cocoa products and highlight Ghana’s leadership in the global cocoa industry. Over the years, the initiative has gained traction, incorporating tourism, business, and cultural elements into its celebrations.

By linking tourism with cocoa promotion, the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts aim to create new economic opportunities for local businesses, attract investment, and strengthen Ghana’s brand identity on the global stage.

Prof. Mensah’s advocacy for a structured valuation of Ghana’s cultural assets aligns with broader national and global conversations on heritage conservation and sustainable tourism. With Ghana’s tourism sector seeking to diversify beyond traditional attractions, initiatives like Chocolate Week serve as prime examples of how cultural and economic sustainability can go hand in hand.

As Ghana continues to innovate in tourism and cultural preservation, industry leaders and policymakers like Prof. Mensah are calling for strategic approaches to ensure that the country’s heritage assets are not only preserved but also maximized for long-term socio-economic benefits.

Avoid increasing tax revenues based on IMF’s target – Ofosu Dortse advises GRA Boss

0

David Ofosu Dortse, a senior partner at AB & David Africa, has advised the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Sarpong, to prioritize sustainable tax policies over merely meeting International Monetary Fund (IMF) revenue targets.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on “30 Days into Mahama’s Government: What Have We Learnt So Far?”, Ofosu Dortse emphasized the need for a balanced approach to fiscal management.

He acknowledged Sarpong’s competence in leading the GRA but stressed that his focus should be on broadening the tax base and identifying new revenue streams rather than aggressively increasing tax collection to satisfy IMF conditions.

According to him, an over-reliance on IMF-driven revenue targets could threaten Ghana’s long-term economic stability.

“He [Anthony Sarpong] is competent, but I think his two challenges are to broaden the tax base so more people can pay and find new sources and ensure that we can increase revenue. What I want him to avoid is increasing revenue based on the target set by the IMF.

“I do not understand how we plan our whole life around what the IMF sets. As a nation, we should know the target and those targets should also include reducing the government’s expenditure. It is not just about raising it only,” he stated.

ECOWAS Representative Assesses Ghana’s Facilities for Human Trafficking Victim Support

Ecowas Resident Representative In Ghana Receives Delegation From Iom And Ministry Of Gender Childre

Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Gana, the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, welcomed a delegation from the International Organisation for Migration and the Human Trafficking Secretariat of Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection on February 3, 2025, in Accra.

The meeting forms a key part of a broader initiative aimed at supporting ECOWAS Member States in strengthening their systems to protect victims of human trafficking. The project, now underway in 12 member countries, is designed to build capacity at the national level, enhancing the reception, care, and reintegration processes for those affected by trafficking.

Following extensive discussions, Ambassador Gana took a tour of several victims’ reception facilities. His visit was not merely ceremonial; he assessed the current conditions, identified pressing challenges, and outlined priority needs that must be addressed before the project can fully launch. This hands-on approach highlights a growing commitment among regional stakeholders to not only develop policies but also ensure that practical, life-changing support reaches those most in need.

Industry observers note that such initiatives are critical, especially in regions where victims of human trafficking face complex and multifaceted challenges. By focusing on the entire continuum of care—from initial reception to eventual reintegration—this project represents a promising step toward harmonizing efforts across ECOWAS Member States. It is a reminder that successful policy implementation often hinges on understanding the on-the-ground realities that statistics alone can’t capture.

Critics and advocates alike emphasize that strengthening these systems will require sustained cooperation and adequate funding, pointing out that the human impact of trafficking extends far beyond economic or legal dimensions. The active participation of ECOWAS, in partnership with international bodies like IOM and national agencies, is seen as a blueprint for regional collaboration. As stakeholders push forward with this ambitious project, there is cautious optimism that such concerted efforts will pave the way for more resilient support structures and improved outcomes for vulnerable populations across the region.

Global AI Summit opens in Paris as Ghanaian innovation takes center stage

0

The Grand Palais opens its doors today for the highly anticipated World AI Summit, marking a watershed moment in global technology governance as African innovation emerges as a key player in shaping artificial intelligence’s future.

The main summit launches following two days of magnificent AI-focused cultural events that transformed Paris, the Capital of France, into a global showcase for the intersection of technology and artistry.

African Excellence in Global Innovation

The AI Action summit’s opening today brings together an unprecedented assembly of world leaders, industry pioneers, and academic visionaries, setting the stage for crucial discussions on AI’s role in shaping our collective future.

Against this backdrop of global cooperation, Africa’s emerging influence in the AI landscape takes on particular significance, with Ghana’s participation highlighting the continent’s growing technological capabilities.

In a development that underscores Africa’s rising prominence in global AI research, Ghana’s Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has emerged as one of only 50 projects selected from a competitive field of over 700 global submissions.

The lab’s innovative work on AI-powered solutions for rare diseases, set to be showcased at booth 18 in the exhibition hall, represents a significant milestone in African AI research and development.

Ghana’s Vision for AI Leadership

Speaking to Citi News ahead of Monday’s opening, Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAIL, expressed optimism about the summit’s potential impact. “This summit will inject a lot more energy into Ghana’s resolve to complete and adopt its own AI strategy for economic transformation,” he said.

“It is hoped that the stories of how AI is transforming other global economies will lead to a renewed focus on putting the necessary structures in place for Ghana to lead the AI revolution in Africa.”

Summit Program Highlights Global Expertise

Today’s program features an impressive roster of global leaders and experts, beginning with an opening address by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, Co-Director of Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, who will explore the theme “Frontier AI: From Understanding the World to Shaping It.”

The day’s schedule includes critical discussions on AI’s impact across various sectors, with sessions dedicated to the future of work, creative industries, cybersecurity, and sustainable AI ecosystem development.

African Voices Shape Global Dialogue

The summit’s main stage will host several high-profile panels, including discussions with Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and various global leaders. The broader summit program includes approximately 100 affiliated events throughout Paris, demonstrating the far-reaching implications of AI development. These side events, split equally between French and international organizers, address crucial themes including public interest AI, workplace transformation, trust in AI, and global governance frameworks. The participation of international organizations such as the UN and UNESCO, alongside civil society groups and academic institutions, underscores the summit’s inclusive approach to AI governance.

African Innovation Drives Global Solutions

For Ghana and the broader African continent, the summit presents a crucial opportunity to influence the trajectory of global AI development. Prof. Kponyo highlighted the potential for “key resolutions towards global cooperation in the development of AI solutions for the mutual benefit of all,” emphasizing the importance of balanced international partnerships in advancing AI technology.

Recognition of African Technology Leadership

The selection of RAIL’s rare disease project for exhibition alongside global innovations marks a significant recognition of African AI capabilities. This achievement, combined with Ghana’s ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive national AI strategy, positions the country as an emerging leader in African technological innovation. The project’s selection also highlights the potential for AI solutions developed in Africa to address global healthcare challenges.

Extended Impact and Future Events

The summit’s influence extends beyond its formal proceedings, with additional events including tomorrow’s Business Day at Station F and the upcoming World AI Cannes Festival (February 13-15) ensuring comprehensive coverage of AI’s impact across sectors.

The Cannes festival, now in its fourth edition, expects to attract 10,000 attendees, 220 AI-focused exhibitors, and 320 renowned speakers, focusing on AI applications in healthcare, banking and finance, manufacturing, and retail.

Broader Implications for Global AI Development

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape global economics and society, the prominent role of African innovation at this summit signals a significant shift in the international technology landscape. Ghana’s participation, particularly through RAIL’s innovative work, demonstrates the continent’s potential to contribute meaningfully to global AI development while addressing crucial challenges in healthcare and economic development.

The summit’s opening today marks the beginning of what many experts anticipate will be a pivotal moment in shaping AI’s global future. With African voices and innovations playing a central role, the event promises to advance more inclusive and equitable approaches to technological development, potentially setting new standards for international cooperation in the AI era.

‘I felt like peeing and pooing at the same time; I was numb’ – Ogidi Brown’s mother recounts son’s accident

0

The mother of popular musician cum artiste manager, Ogidi Brown, has recounted how she received the news of her son’s accident in Italy.

In an interview with Delay, she narrated the emotional experience of how she heard of the incident on that fateful day while she was in church.

‘Artist Maame,’ as she is popularly known, who has since lived with her son in Italy, said an elder called her to break the news of the accident, which she struggled to process.

“When the accident happened, it was during Easter, so I travelled to my sister’s place in Milano. I received a call from an elder telling me what had happened. He told me to stand firm as he was about to give me difficult news. He then said Ogidi had an accident. I asked if he was still alive, and he said it was serious, but he wasn’t dead.

“My entire body froze. I couldn’t hear or see anything anymore. At that very moment, I felt like I needed to pee, poop, and everything at once. I was sweating profusely,” she recounted.

She continued, “I was at church at the time, so I left everything I was doing, picked a train, and went to the hospital.”

Ogidi Brown’s mother recalled the frightening condition she witnessed when she arrived at the hospital.

“When I arrived, I wasn’t allowed to see him that day. So, I waited until the next day. When I got there, they told me he was likely to die in 10 minutes, so he was airlifted by helicopter to a larger hospital.

“When I got there, it was an extremely difficult sight to behold. I kept asking if he was dead. No part of his body was working, and they had covered him with a white cloth as though he had passed. They had attached numerous machines to his body. When I saw him, I shook. He was swollen and just lying there,” she recalled.

She added that she hasn’t worked since that incident, dedicating all her time to caring for her son.

“I have never worked since I travelled abroad. My son had the accident exactly one and a half years after I arrived there,” she said.

About Ogidi Brown’s accident

Ten years ago, Ogidi Brown was involved in a horrific head-on collision with a huge tipper truck in Italy.

He subsequently fell into a coma for two weeks, and his condition was so serious that both his hands and legs became dysfunctional and numb.

Narrating the events of the accident during an earlier interview with Delay, Ogidi Brown explained that he, along with his colleagues, had left home to meet an Elder of the Church of Pentecost who was returning from the UK.

“I was with two guys who had been assigned to the mission. I wasn’t originally part of the plan, but I asked them to give me a lift to the church since they were passing through Modena to pick up the Elder in Bologna. I enjoy dancing, and I was planning to dance in church. When we got to Modena, I checked the time and realized it was too late to join the dancers. I decided to go with them to the airport to meet the Elder, and that’s where my sad story began,” he recalled.

“When we arrived, the person we met checked his watch and said the Elder hadn’t arrived yet, but that wasn’t true. He said the Elder would be there in an hour. So, we decided to head into town instead of waiting around for an hour,” he stated.

He continued, “We drove off, and I was sitting in the back. When we got to Casa Franco, we had the accident. A lady who was on the phone rammed into our car. Her car was completely mangled.”

A container of stashed cash by the suspect 'Alhaji' seized by National Security operatives A container of stashed cash by the suspect ‘Alhaji’ seized by National Security operatives

Social media has been buzzing with the name “Alhaji” following the interception of a shipment containing unspecified amounts of US dollars, Ghanaian cedis (both genuine and counterfeit), and gold bars by National Security.

The items were discovered concealed in a warehouse in Sapeiman, a suburb of Accra, after National Security operatives acted on a tip-off.

During a special late-night operation, law enforcement officers uncovered 12 shipping containers (20ft each) filled with concealed items, although two containers remain unaccounted for and are currently being tracked.

Among the seized items were, bundles of fake US dollars, found hidden in wooden boxes covered with cement and charcoal, additional counterfeit currencies sealed in plywood-covered boxes, boxes of metals suspected to be gold bars, fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots.

Who is ‘Alhaji’?

Security officials have disclosed that the alleged ringleader, known only as “Alhaji,” is currently on the run along with three other suspects.

A nationwide manhunt has been launched to track down and arrest all those involved.

The revelation has sparked intense discussions on X (formerly Twitter), where Ghanaians are demanding Alhaji’s identity and questioning the origin and purpose of the concealed items.

Many critics are also skeptical of the authorities’ claims that the currencies are counterfeit, dismissing it as a cover-up.

They have raised concerns about the implications of such large sums of money being hoarded in the country, speculating about the possible involvement of high-ranking officials.

As of Monday, February 10, 2025, ‘Alhaji’ remains a trending topic, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the unfolding investigation.

A life of wealth, power and a tragic end

0

In the early 2000s, one name was synonymous with wealth, opulence, and power in the person of George ‘Opesika’ Agudey.

With a fleet of over thirty luxury vehicles parked on his compound, George Agudey’s collection included Porsche’s, Mercedes-Benz, BMWs, and a variety of SUVs.

Despite his luxurious lifestyle, George ‘Opesika’ Agudey also saw himself as a patriot and an advocate for Ghana’s progress as he campaigned as the CPP’s presidential candidate in 2004.

He pushed a vision of economic transformation and social equity.

George Agudey’s speeches often emphasised nation-building and the responsibility of every citizen in shaping Ghana’s future.

While Agudey projected an image of success and prosperity, trouble was brewing behind the scenes.

Despite his immense wealth and luxurious lifestyle, George Agudey neglected the welfare of his employees, leading to his dramatic downfall.

The court not only sentenced him to prison but also ordered him to repay all outstanding debts owed to his workers and SSNIT contributions.

Following the court proceedings, he began to serve his jail term immediately, marking a stunning fall from grace.

As if the legal troubles weren’t enough, George Agudey also faced bitter family conflicts as his wife Florence Nardu Agudey accused him of siphoning large sums of money from Gocrest Security Company to finance his extravagant lifestyle.

She took him to court, alleging that he had used company funds to buy fleets of luxury cars and acquire expensive real estate, while she, a 50 percent shareholder of the business, had struggled financially.

She further claimed that George Agudey had cut off all communication with her for four years, ignoring her calls and letters.

Following his release from prison, George ‘Opesika’ Agudey disappeared from the public eye with his political influence also fading.

Additionally, his once-thriving business empire crumbled while friends and associates distanced themselves from him, marking a tragic fall for the man who once symbolized wealth and power, became a shadow of himself.

In December 2023, George Opesika Agudey passed away quietly with his final years reported to have been marked by hardship and isolation.

Five major revelations DCOP Lydia Donkor said about probe into Pooley’s death

DCOP Lydia Donkor shares findings into Pooley's death DCOP Lydia Donkor shares findings into Pooley’s death

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has disclosed some findings as she leads investigations into the tragic stabbing of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.

The police officer, tasked by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to probe the incident indicated that Pooley was stabbed outside the stadium during the violent clash that led to his death on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at Nsoatre.

She also discussed emergency response services, enhancing security protocols, and dealing with culprits.

Here are the five major takeaways from DCOP Lydia Donkor’s interview with JoySports relating to Pooley’s death:

1. Pooley died outside stadium

“This unfortunate incident did not occur inside the stadium; it happened outside. He was later picked up by a tricycle and dropped at a section of the stadium. I must clarify this, as there are comments suggesting the police allowed someone to enter the stadium with a knife. Let me state that the police enforce a strict search regime,” she said.

DCOP Donkor added that Pooley could have sought police protection if he felt threatened.

“The best advice I can give is that if he had genuine concerns about threats to his life, he could have approached the police or informed someone in the area, so we would be aware,” she added.

2. Improving emergency response service

“I believe that, per their training, ambulance services respond to emergencies involving players or officials on the pitch. This incident has enlightened us to the need for sensitization. Ambulance drivers must remain in their vehicles to respond quickly to emergencies,” she said.

3. Installing CCTV Cameras at Stadia

“The conversation about installing CCTVs at our stadia is crucial. Well-positioned and functioning CCTVs make it easy to investigate incidents. We can identify perpetrators by reviewing footage. Videos or pictures can also aid in making further arrests,” Donkor noted.

4. Unacceptable for fans to join team bus

“The team bus is exclusively for players and officials. However, we often find supporters joining the team buses, which is unacceptable. Sometimes, they even follow the bus with an extra car.

“Unfortunately, in this incident, some supporters from the home team were in the safe zone, preventing the team bus from entering. This is totally unacceptable, and we recommend strict enforcement,” she indicated.

5. Interference in GFA’s disciplinary actions

“Some fans commit offences and get away with them. They may slap a referee, and nothing happens. When the police try to arrest or investigate, club owners and chiefs intervene, begging for leniency.

“This culture must stop, as it makes our work difficult. We must start prosecuting people and banning them from stadia. Unfortunately, this incident serves as a wake-up call,” DCOP Donkor noted.

Consumers urged to prioritize health over cost

The 2025 National Chocolate Week has been launched with a call to Ghanaian consumers to focus on the health benefits of chocolate products rather than their cost. This follows concerns of significant rise in chocolate prices during the celebration of National Chocolate Week.

At the event, organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority on Friday, February 7, 2025, the deputy Public Affairs Manager of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Benjamin Larweh announced plans to encourage more processing companies to participate to make chocolate more accessible.

“For instance, natural cocoa powder can help reduce blood pressure and manage diabetes. So, cost shouldn’t be the primary concern. At COCOBOD, we’re encouraging more processing companies to join us, ensuring more people can access these benefits,” Larweh explained.

Speaking on behalf of the new Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Marilyn Maame Efua Houadjeto, Deputy CEO, Ekow Sampson highlighted a shift in consumer attitudes toward locally produced cocoa products. He noted that per capita cocoa consumption has increased from 0.45 kilograms to 1 kilogram over the past 5 to 7 years.

He also appealed to hoteliers to include chocolate products on their menus during the celebration.

The Deputy Marketing Manager for the Cocoa Processing Company Limited, Vera Adjei Agyemfra underscored the company’s long-standing commitment to the celebration and shared that their various chocolate brands remain affordable.

In 2005, the Ghana Tourism Authority introduced National Chocolate Day, aligning it with Valentine’s Day on February 14 to promote Ghana’s cocoa-based products, particularly chocolate. This celebration has seen strong collaboration with COCOBOD, Cocoa Processing Companies (CPC), and other chocolatiers.

The theme for the 2025 National Chocolate Week is “Eat Chocolate, Stay Healthy, Grow Ghana,” with the sub-theme “Chocolate for All: Taste, Share, and Care.”

Confusion over time and location of Pooley’s stabbing

0

Pooley was murdered on February 2 Pooley was murdered on February 2

Discussions about the murder of popular Asante Kotoko fan, Francis Frimpong, alias Nana Pooley, have birthed three narratives about the timing and location of his death.

When the story broke initially, reports from various eyewitnesses indicated that Pooley was murdered during the scuffle after the match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Konamansah Park in Nsoatre.

According to them, the post-match chaos was due to heightened tensions during the game where Asante Kotoko lost 1-0.

They assert that Pooley died within the premises of the stadium as the person who stabbed him was within the walls of the Nana Konamansah Park.

However, ace sports journalist Collins Atta Poku told GhanaWeb in an interview that the incident happened before the game ended.

Atta Poku detailed that Francis Oppong, alias Nana Pooley, had his life taken by the person who stabbed him before Nsoatreman scored the only goal of the game.

“Kotoko wanted to end the game when the scuffle ensued. I am reliably informed that when they attempted to do so, referee George Vormawah told them that he had spoken to the bosses in Accra, who directed him to continue the match. Why would you want to proceed when you know the security situation at hand?”

“Kotoko wanted to boycott the game at some point. Pooley died before Nsoatreman scored their goal. Pooley died in the stadium, even before the game ended,” he told Emmanuel Enin in an interview on GhanaWeb TV.

As the conversations continue, a new narrative has emerged from the Ghana Football Association.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor, who has been tasked by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to lead investigations into the tragic stabbing of Yaw Frimpong, revealed in a Joy FM interview that the Asante Kotoko fan was stabbed outside the stadium during the violent clash that led to his death on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

The Chairperson of the GFA’s Security Committee shed new light on the circumstances surrounding the attack, providing a step-by-step account of what transpired while emphasizing that strict security measures were in place at the stadium.

“This unfortunate incident did not happen inside the stadium. It happened outside, and he was later picked up by a tricycle and dropped at that section of the stadium.

“I have to clarify this because there are all kinds of comments suggesting the police allowed someone to enter the stadium with a knife. Let me state that the police enforce a strict search regime,” she said.

It is worth noting that six persons have been arrested in connection with the incident with two of them on bail.

There will be no need for Minority to attend Parliament if we want to exert our powers – Majority Chief Whip

0

The Majority Chief Whip of Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has advised the Minority to desist from what he describes as petty politicking being engaged in by the caucus.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party caucus, considering their numbers, should not overestimate their influence as against that of the Majority National Democratic Congress.

“We are being taunted by the Minority. They are making all sorts of funny comments, and they make those comments as if they just haven’t left government after 8 years. If we want to exert our powers, there will be no need for any of them to attend Parliament because we will command our numbers; we will do everything in Parliament without recourse to them,” he stated in an interview on TV3.

He underscored that the NDC, despite their commanding numbers in the 9th Parliament, remains interested in engaging and building consensus with the NPP on matters in the interest of the nation.

The NDC gained a significant majority in the 2024 parliamentary election with 183 seats against the NPP’s 88 seats. Four independent candidates in the House have also elected to join the NDC caucus, while one seat remains outstanding.

However, the NPP has on occasion accused the NDC of failing to marshal their numbers to conduct business in the House. On Friday, February 8, 2025, the House was forced to adjourn sitting when the Minority raised the issue of quorum.

You don’t give criminals two weeks to fold up – Ashanti Regional Minister under attack for giving ultimatum to galamseyers

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Amoako Baah, has come under heavy criticism for issuing an ultimatum to illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers, within his jurisdiction to desist from their activities.

Speaking on Saturday, February 8, 2025, edition of Newsfile on Joynews, former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Inusah Fuseini described the action of the minister as indicative of weakness.

“We don’t give criminals time to prepare. If someone defecates in your backyard and you catch them, you don’t give them time to clean it up—you order them to do it immediately,” he stressed.

He noted that the decision to give the illegal miners an ultimatum would render the fight against galamsey less effective, hence the need for the minister to hit the ground running.

Stunning Occasion Styles for Gorgeous Looks

0

Occasions, whether they are weddings, galas, formal parties, or any special event, are the perfect opportunity to showcase your style and elegance. Dressing for such occasions can be a challenge, but with the right outfit, you can ensure that you stand out with a gorgeous and unforgettable look. Here are some stunning occasion styles to consider for your next big event, each offering a blend of sophistication, modernity, and timeless charm.

1. Elegant Evening Gowns

Nothing beats the timeless beauty of an elegant evening gown. Whether it’s a floor-length dress with intricate embellishments or a sleek, minimalist design, evening gowns are perfect for black-tie events. For a stunning look, opt for gowns with luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, or chiffon. Bold colors like deep reds, emerald greens, and royal blues can make a dramatic statement. Don’t forget to accessorize with sparkling jewelry, a statement clutch, and heels to complete the look.

2. Statement Jumpsuits

For those who want to break away from the traditional gown, a statement jumpsuit is an excellent option. The tailored, sophisticated nature of a jumpsuit gives you an elegant silhouette, and when paired with metallic fabrics, lace, or bold prints, it becomes a show-stopper. A well-fitted jumpsuit can be just as glamorous as a gown, and its versatility makes it suitable for both formal and semi-formal occasions.

3. Gorgeous Ankara Styles

For events that celebrate African culture or for those who love bold, colorful prints, Ankara outfits are an absolute must. From floor-length dresses to peplum tops paired with skirts, the vibrant prints of Ankara fabric will ensure you’re the center of attention. Add a modern twist with contemporary cuts, such as off-shoulder or asymmetrical designs, to make the outfit both fashionable and culturally significant.

4. Chic Cocktail Dresses

Cocktail dresses are ideal for semi-formal events where you want to look chic without being too overdressed. Whether you prefer a little black dress (LBD) or something with a pop of color or sparkle, cocktail dresses offer endless styling possibilities. A fitted dress with a sweetheart neckline or a flared dress with lace detailing can make you look polished and stylish. Pair with a sleek updo, some strappy heels, and bold makeup to complete your look.

5. Sophisticated Midi Dresses

Midi dresses strike the perfect balance between formal and casual, making them ideal for weddings, brunches, and more relaxed evening events. These dresses are flattering on all body types and can be styled with elegant accessories. Opt for dresses with intricate lace or beaded details to elevate the look. Whether it’s a form-fitting pencil midi or a flared, A-line design, this style is versatile enough to take you from a cocktail hour to a dinner date.

6. Luxury Tailored Suits

For women who prefer a more structured look, a luxury tailored suit can be both powerful and sophisticated. A fitted blazer with a sleek pair of trousers or a pencil skirt offers a chic alternative to dresses. Choose high-end fabrics such as wool, velvet, or satin, and incorporate rich colors like navy, burgundy, or metallic tones for a more festive feel. Add a statement necklace or earrings for a touch of glamour, and opt for pointed heels to keep the look sharp.

7. Bridal Styles

For brides, nothing is more important than the wedding dress. Whether you go for a classic ball gown, a modern A-line dress, or a sleek mermaid cut, the options are endless. Bridal gowns are often adorned with delicate lace, intricate beadwork, or sparkling embellishments that catch the light beautifully. For a bold statement, some brides are embracing colored gowns in shades of blush, gold, or even blue, adding a personal touch to their special day.

8. Stunning Skirt and Top Combos

If you prefer separates, a stunning skirt and top combination can be just as glamorous. Pair a floor-length, high-waisted skirt with a crop top, bodice, or embellished blouse for a look that balances elegance and modernity. Choose luxurious fabrics like tulle, silk, or velvet for the skirt and add embellishments like sequins, beads, or lace to the top for an elevated, stunning effect.

Conclusion

Looking gorgeous at any occasion is all about choosing the right outfit that makes you feel confident and stylish. From glamorous evening gowns and trendy jumpsuits to the colorful vibrancy of Ankara styles, there’s a perfect occasion look for everyone. The key is to find a style that flatters your body, complements the event, and reflects your personality. No matter the occasion, with the right choice of outfit, you’ll leave a lasting impression with a stunning, gorgeous look.

Labadi Beach Hotel withdraws injunction against Polo Beach Club

0

In a significant legal development, Labadi Beach Hotel has withdrawn its application for an interlocutory injunction against Polo Beach Club, marking a major win for the fast-growing beachfront destination.

The dispute, which centered around a 0.54-acre piece of land, saw Hotel Investments (Ghana) Limited, operators of Labadi Beach Hotel, claim that Polo Beach Club was encroaching on its property.

The hotel initially secured a 10-day interim injunction, restricting Polo Beach Club’s operations on the contested land.

However, when the matter returned to court, Labadi Beach Hotel chose to withdraw its application instead of proceeding with arguments—a move that led the Land Court to strike out the case and award GH₵4,000 in costs against the hotel.

Legal Argument

Polo Beach Club, through its legal counsel, strongly contested the allegations, pointing out inconsistencies in Labadi Beach Hotel’s claims.

The defense argued that the boundaries of the disputed land were unclear, with contradictions between the statement of claim, lease agreement, and land title certificate.
Furthermore, Polo Beach Club highlighted what it viewed as deliberate attempts to stifle its business, stating that Labadi Beach Hotel had sought to portray the club as a nuisance rather than engaging in fair business competition.
With Polo Beach Club growing as a top-tier venue for entertainment, events, and leisure, the company also emphasized the financial and reputational harm an injunction would have caused, urging the court to consider the broader impact on its operations.

Victory for Polo Beach Club

By withdrawing its application, Labadi Beach Hotel effectively conceded this round of the legal battle, ensuring that Polo Beach Club remains fully operational.

The outcome reinforces Polo Beach Club’s standing as a premier beachfront destination, cementing its place in Accra’s vibrant hospitality scene.
While the broader land dispute may still continue, this ruling sends a strong signal that fair business practices and the rule of law must prevail over anything else.

With the injunction dismissed, the focus now returns to delivering world-class experiences at Polo Beach Club.

Bank Teller Busted With GHS 9000k Unexplained Cash Hidden Inside His House

0

Acording to the report by TV3 GH today Sunday, in Tamale Central, Ghana – a shocking case of suspected financial fraud has rocked Tamale Central after a bank teller, Kofi Adjei, was caught with a staggering GHS 900,000 in unexplained cash hidden inside his house.

The arrest happened today, Sunday, following a tip-off from a concerned resident.

According to police reports, Kofi Adjei, who works at a well-known commercial bank in Tamale, had been under surveillance for weeks after financial irregularities were detected at his branch. E/R: Man Arrested Over Gunshots At NIA Registration Centre

The situation escalated when an anonymous whistleblower informed the police about suspicious cash movements linked to him.

DSP Richmond Amoah, the Tamale Central District Police Commander, spoke to the media after the arrest.

“We received credible intelligence that Mr. Adjei was hiding large sums of money in his residence. A team of officers conducted a search, and we discovered bundles of cash amounting to GHS 900,000 hidden inside a wardrobe, under his bed, and even in kitchen cabinets,” he stated.

When confronted, Kofi Adjei was visibly shaken and struggled to explain the source of the money.

“Officer, I swear I was only keeping it for someone. This is not stolen money,” he pleaded as police officers handcuffed him.

However, bank officials confirmed that the missing amount matched discrepancies in their records over the past month.

According to Mr. Samuel Boateng, the branch manager, internal investigations had pointed to Kofi Adjei’s suspicious transactions.

“We noticed consistent shortages in our accounts and launched an internal audit. Kofi was questioned last week, but he denied any wrongdoing. Today’s discovery confirms our worst fears,” he said.

Neighbors in the area were stunned by the revelation. One resident, Auntie Afia, who witnessed the police raid, expressed disbelief.

“I always knew Kofi was doing well, but I never suspected anything illegal. Just last month, he bought a new car and was planning to travel abroad,” she remarked.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to report suspicious financial activities.

DSP Amoah warned, “This should serve as a lesson. No one is above the law. If you steal from the public, you will be caught.”

Kofi Adjei remains in police custody as officers prepare to charge him with financial fraud and possible money laundering.

Young Climate Innovators in Ghana Tackle Environmental Crisis

0

Young Climate Innovators
Young Climate Innovators

In the face of a growing climate crisis, a vibrant new generation in Ghana is stepping up with bold, innovative solutions aimed at protecting the nation’s fragile environment.

At the heart of this movement is the Young Climate Innovators Program (YCLIP), an initiative launched on January 31 at the University of Ghana by Professor Ama Nana Klutse Browne, CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

The program seeks to empower students and young professionals with the tools, mentorship, and resources needed to develop sustainable climate solutions for vulnerable communities across the country.

One such innovator is Christiana Oppong Peprah, a Plant and Environmental Biology student at the University of Ghana. Christiana, who has witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of human activities on local ecosystems, shared her vision for conserving the dwindling mangrove forests at Ningo Prampram. “I already have an idea in mind where I want us to conserve the mangroves at Ningo Prampram,” she explained. “I’ve visited the area several times and seen how the mangroves are disappearing—cut down for charcoal and other human activities.

As the population grows, these trees are vanishing, leaving the community exposed to the force of the sea waves. I’ve written a project proposal, and I hope my facilitator will see its potential.” Her determination is a vivid reminder that environmental stewardship begins with the recognition of what is at stake—and the courage to act.

The YCLIP initiative is a collaborative effort between the EPA, the Center for Climate Change and Sustainability Empowerment (CCSE), and the University of Ghana, with additional support from international partners such as Tsinghua University in China. Thirty innovators from the University of Ghana have been paired with an equal number from China, setting the stage for cross-cultural collaboration and shared problem-solving. Their projects span a wide range of themes—from water and sanitation and climate-smart agriculture to biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, circular economy practices, and zero-emission transportation. This multidisciplinary approach reflects a growing consensus among experts that addressing climate change requires integrated, innovative solutions.

Young Climate Innovators

Professor Browne’s remarks at the launch resonated with urgency. She highlighted how rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and rampant environmental degradation are already taking a heavy toll on agriculture, water resources, and the overall livelihoods of Ghanaians. Illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, has exacerbated the situation by polluting water bodies and degrading fertile lands. In this context, the YCLIP is more than just a training program—it is an investment in the future of the nation, a call to young people to harness their creativity for the common good.

The initiative has also sparked conversations among policy makers and environmental advocates. Dr. Antwi Boasiako, Director at the EPA, stressed that the effects of climate change have long been underestimated. “Our environment is the foundation upon which everything else is built—schools, hospitals, farms, roads, and even the air we breathe,” he commented. “If we continue to disregard the health of our environment, the consequences for public health and survival will be severe.” His words serve as a wake-up call to communities and government alike, emphasizing the need for a more sustainable approach to development.

Adding to the momentum, Mr. Kassim Hussein, Executive Director of CCSE, noted that the YCLIP is a transformative initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of climate leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. His vision is clear: young people must be given the platform to develop ideas that can drive real change, ensuring that Ghana stays on course with international climate commitments such as the Paris Agreement and its own Nationally Determined Contributions.

In an era where climate challenges are escalating, the energy and ingenuity of Ghana’s young innovators offer a promising counter-narrative. Their work is not only a beacon of hope for a sustainable future but also a testament to the power of youthful determination in the face of global challenges. As these bright minds develop their projects and share their visions, they are setting the stage for a generation of leaders who will one day steer Ghana—and indeed the world—toward a more resilient and environmentally secure future.

We allowed a person like Dr. Bawumia to dance to profane ‘sisifia’ – Mark Okraku Mantey

0

Dr. Bawumia, during his campaign tour was captured on several platforms dancing to the popular song Dr. Bawumia, during his campaign tour was captured on several platforms dancing to the popular song

Correction: In an earlier publication, we erroneously stated that former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 elections to its use of King Paluta’s Makoma during the campaign. We wish to clarify that while Okraku Mantey criticized the party’s choice of the song on ethical grounds—citing its profane lyrics—he did not suggest that it contributed to the NPP’s electoral defeat. He was primarily talking about ethics of journalism. We regret the misrepresentation and apologize for any confusion caused.

Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, has raised concerns about ethical brand management, citing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) use of King Paluta’s Makoma during the 2024 election campaign.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Okraku Mantey questioned the decision-making process that led to the party adopting the song, arguing that it contains profane lyrics.

“Do you know that the song we were playing, ‘Sisifia,’ is profane? It is profane. This party has people like me, George Quaye—those of us in the music industry. Take me as an example; nobody will consult you on music. Then we take a profane song for someone like Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—look at his brand—then we, as a party, ask Dr. Bawumia to dance to it…” he stated.

King Paluta’s Makoma became a signature tune for the NPP’s campaign ahead of the December 7, 2024, elections. The song, which explores themes of love and respect in relationships, was widely embraced by party supporters. In a recent interview, Paluta himself highlighted how the lyrics had positively influenced marriages by encouraging women to appreciate and respect their husbands.

However, Okraku Mantey pointed out that one of the words in the song explicitly references the female sex organ, making it inappropriate for a political campaign.

Throughout the campaign, Dr. Bawumia was frequently seen dancing to Makoma on various platforms, reinforcing the song’s association with his candidacy. Critics argue that the use of a song with explicit language was a misstep, especially given the party’s brand image.

The NPP ultimately lost both the presidential and parliamentary elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

SWAG Welcomes Kofi Adams as New Sports and Recreation Minister

0

Swag Welcomes Kofi Adams
Swag Welcomes Kofi Adams

In a move that has generated considerable excitement among Ghana’s sports community, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has warmly welcomed Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams as the first Minister for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

Following his recent approval by Parliament and his swearing-in by H. E. John Mahama, Adams now steps into a role that promises to reshape the nation’s sports landscape.

Adams’ appointment is seen as a strong testament to his extensive experience in governance and managerial roles. During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, he made it clear that his vision for the ministry goes beyond the traditional focus on football. His promise to develop sports holistically—emphasizing a range of disciplines—has struck a chord with those who believe that Ghana’s potential in athletics, boxing, basketball, and other sports has yet to be fully tapped.

Many observers note that while Adams faces significant challenges, such as the need to improve sports infrastructure and enhance athlete welfare, his deep passion for sports gives him a solid foundation from which to drive meaningful change. His commitment to nurturing emerging talents and promoting school-level competitions, including reviving events like the Inter-Schools competitions and the SESSA Games, could be a game changer in diversifying Ghana’s sports ecosystem.

SWAG, the umbrella body for sports journalists in the country, has expressed optimism about the fresh direction Adams promises to bring. The association is particularly eager to see his plans for not only boosting professional sports but also creating sustainable development opportunities at the grassroots level. With greater transparency and accountability on the agenda, many believe that this appointment marks the start of a new era for sports in Ghana—one that could lead to improved performance on the international stage.

As the nation watches closely, the enthusiasm for Adams’ leadership is palpable. His track record and outspoken commitment to elevating sports beyond the pitch have set high expectations, and his supporters are hopeful that his tenure will translate into tangible benefits for athletes and fans alike. SWAG’s message is clear: the time has come for a broad-based approach to sports development, and with Adams at the helm, Ghana is poised to see that vision come to life.

In extending their congratulations, SWAG not only welcomes Adams but also signals a readiness to work collaboratively with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. Both groups share the belief that when governance and passion for sports come together, the result is a brighter, more inclusive future for Ghanaian sports.

IMF to discuss 2025 budget with govt amid plans to scrap key taxes

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is set to begin critical discussions with the government this week as the country finalises its 2025 budget which is scheduled for presentation in March.

The talks come at a pivotal moment, with the government planning to scrap key tax lines, including the contentious E-levy, betting tax, and COVID-19 levy.

These taxes, introduced by the previous government to boost domestic revenue, have faced widespread opposition from businesses and citizens.

With Ghana under an IMF-backed $3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme, the fund is expected to scrutinise how these proposed tax cuts align with the country’s fiscal consolidation efforts.

The IMF will be seeking assurances that the removal of these levies will not undermine revenue targets or derail Ghana’s economic recovery.

Beyond revenue concerns, the government is also under pressure to resolve Ghana’s mounting energy sector debt, which has been a major strain on public finances.

The liabilities of the sector, estimated to exceed $2 billion, continue to threaten the stability of power producers and the broader economy. Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have repeatedly warned of potential supply disruptions if the government fails to settle outstanding arrears.

The financial distress of the energy sector has contributed to the cedi’s depreciation, as the government requires substantial foreign exchange to meet payment obligations to power producers.

The IMF will be pushing for concrete measures to address the structural inefficiencies in the energy space, improve cost recovery and ensure a sustainable financial framework for the country’s energy industry.

Government is expected to present a clear roadmap to the IMF, outlining how it intends to offset revenue losses, settle energy sector debts and sustain macroeconomic stability while implementing these tax reforms.

The outcome of the engagements  will be closely watched by investors, businesses and multilateral partners as Ghana seeks to strike a delicate balance between fiscal prudence, economic growth and energy sector stability.

‘Defend yourself; don’t be intimidated by Annoh-Dompreh’ – NDC G/A Youth Organiser

0

The Greater Accra Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Amos Blessing Amorse, has urged party supporters in the Ablekuma North constituency to defend themselves against alleged attacks from supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking at a vigil organised by NDC supporters in the constituency on Sunday, 9th February, Mr Amorse condemned the Minority Chief Whip’s comments and encouraged party members to stand their ground and “protect their seat.”

If our leaders at the top will not ensure that NPP supporters are brought in line and made to obey the laws of this country, then as citizens, we will initiate our own ORAL. The NPP must understand that they are no longer in government and cannot take the law into their own hands. We have laws in this country, and we will ensure they are obeyed.

He further criticised the Ghana Police Service for failing to take action against the lawmaker, stating:

Police, IGP and all the security services up to date they have not been able to open their mouth, not alone invite him. Maybe after the tensions escalate, the IGP will come to his senses and know that when somebody misconducts himself, the law is there to deal with the person irrespective of his political office.

Meanwhile, tensions continue to rise in the constituency amid an ongoing dispute over the parliamentary results in Ablekuma North, with both candidates—Akua Afriyie of the NPP and Ewurabena Aubyn of the NDC—claiming victory in the 2024 election.

African leaders demand Congo ceasefire after Tanzania summit

0

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Feb 10, (dpa/GNA) – African leaders on Saturday demanded an immediate ceasefire and negotations, to end a severe outbreak of fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

After a summit in the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam, eastern and southern African countries agreed to seek a political solution through talks with all state and non-state actors in the conflict.

Congolese President, Félix Tshisekedi, is yet to comment on the final declaration.

He has previously refused to negotiate with the M23 rebel alliance, which took control of the key eastern city of Goma in January.

The Rwandan-backed group controls large parts of the resource-rich province of North Kivu, and has attacked further towns in South Kivu.

According to UN estimates, almost 3,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced, since the fighting escalated at the beginning of the year.

The meeting on Saturday, brought together leaders from the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for a special summit.

Military leaders from the two blocs are due to convene within five days, to work on plans to end the fighting in Congo.

The declaration also included a security plan for Goma and the surrounding area, encompassing the immediate reopening of Goma airport and the opening of supply routes in the region.

Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, attended the meeting in Tanzania.

Between 4,000 Rwandan and 7,000 troops are believed to be fighting alongside M23 in eastern Congo.

Tshisekedi’s government accuses the Rwandan forces of seeking to secure access to critcal raw materials, but Kigali says it is protecting its security and the Tutsi ethnic group.

Kenyan President William Ruto, the current chairman of the EAC, demanded an immediate end to the fighting, as he called attention to the hundreds of thousands of civilians in the conflict zone.

It is well even though he no longer walks – Ogidi Brown’s mother expresses gratitude for her son’s recovery

0

The mother of Ghanaian musician Ogidi Brown has expressed contentment over her son’s recovery following his near-fatal accident some nine years ago.

Known in entertainment circles as Artiste Maame, the musician’s mother said she feels gratitude to God despite her son’s inability to walk after the accident.

“They said he was not going to die, but at that time he was very young, so they said it would be well but it would take some time, and truly, it is well. The fact that he is not walking does not mean it is not well; it is very well. Because when we first returned to Ghana, we were eight in total due to concerns that something might happen to him. From then on, I came with him every time he was returning to Ghana, but today he is able to come to Ghana on his own. He has been to Ghana more than seven times. He even comes to spend about a year all by himself and then returns, so it is well,” she told Deloris Frimpong Manso, host of the “Delay Show.”

Speaking on the show, Artiste Maame shared details of the accident and her son’s path to recovery, which took a grueling toll on her but led to a stronger bond between her and her son.

According to her, Ogidi Brown spent about three months in a coma after the accident and had to be on hospital admission for about a year following the accident in Italy.

Inspired by her son, Artiste Maame recently started her own music career with Ogidi Brown acting as her manager and has since released two singles.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has come under heavy criticism for issuing an ultimatum to illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers, within his jurisdiction to desist from their activities.

Speaking on the February 8, 2025, edition of Newsfile on JoyNews, former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Alhaji Inusah Fuseini described the minister’s action as indicative of weakness.

“We don’t give criminals time to prepare. If someone defecates in your backyard and you catch them, you don’t give them time to clean it up, you order them to do it immediately,” he stressed.

He noted that the decision to give the illegal miners an ultimatum would render the fight against galamsey less effective, hence the need for the minister to hit the ground running.

“When you do that, it shows weakness in you; the people will exploit that weakness,” he stated.

He, however, commended the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency, Professor Browne Klutse, for being bold and decisive by ordering illegal miners to leave forest reserves immediately.

“That is why I commend Prof. Browne Klutse, the EPA Boss, when she went around ordering people to leave the forest reserves,” he noted.

As part of his efforts to crack down on illegal miners, the Ashanti Regional Minister, who assumed office recently, has issued a two-week ultimatum to illegal miners operating in forest reserves to vacate or face the full weight of the law.

Supporters of Ghana’s two most historic clubs united on the evening of Sunday, February 9, 2025, to honor the memory of their fallen colleague, Francis Frimpong, alias Nana Pooley, whose life was cruelly taken from him during a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Officials and fans of Hearts and Kotoko converged at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to hold a candlelight vigil for Pooley, whose life was dedicated to serving and promoting Asante Kotoko.

While the vigil was meant to honor the memory of Pooley, it also served as a reminder of the importance of proper conduct at game centers.

It also served as a notice to the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Football Association to ensure that appropriate security protocols are instituted at game venues to prevent a repetition of the chaos that occurred at the Nana Konamansah Park.

The fans wielded placards calling authorities to action and urging their fellow supporters to learn lessons from the unfortunate incident.

So far, six people, including the former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, have been arrested for their respective roles in the fracas.

Two of the six accused are on bail and will appear in court on February 17, 2025.
