We’ll overturn High Court ruling against Ernest Kumi

0

John Darko, Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame has expressed his belief that the High Court decision against Akwatia Member of Parliament (MP) Ernest Kumi will be successfully overturned.

The High Court in Koforidua on Wednesday, February 19, convicted the Akwatia MP for contempt of court following his defiance of an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Presiding Judge, Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, also issued a bench warrant for Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.

Speaking on  Citi FM‘s Eyewitness News on Thursday February 20, Darko highlighted “I will not say that (we made a mistake by making Kumi swear in). Of course, at the end of the day, I believe that we will successfully set this decision aside and for me, that is very important.”

He emphasised the necessity of fairness in Ghana’s judicial system, insisting that no judge should be able to make a decision on a matter that has not matured for hearing.

“We need to be fair in this country. If a matter is not right for hearing, it is not matured, no judge should be able to take a decision on it,” he said.

Darko also expressed concern that the decision may have been influenced by factors other than the law, potentially hinting at political motivations.

“It is sad to say the consideration for reaching this was not law but something different, maybe political,” he remarked.

Ghana faces billions in costs to reclaim lands devastated by illegal mining

0

Professor Nana Browne Klutse, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), described the situation as an emergency and called on development partners to assist in funding the country’s reclamation efforts.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, Prof. Klutse disclosed that a World Bank-funded project had facilitated the reclamation of some land, but only on a pilot basis. She stressed the need for additional funding to scale up these efforts.

“We have been approached by companies willing to help reclaim and restore the land, but the condition is that Ghana must bear the cost of the technology after the pilot phase,” she explained.

Prof. Klutse further emphasised the necessity of ensuring that all mining companies, upon securing permits, contribute to a bond that would be utilised for land reclamation.

However, she lamented that many illegal miners had exploited vast areas and vanished without accountability.

“At present, we have large expanses of degraded land left behind by unidentified individuals who have absconded. We need to reclaim these lands, but we lack the financial resources to do so,” she added.

With the enactment of the Environmental Protection Act 2025 (Act 1124), which elevates the EPA to an authority status, Prof. Klutse announced plans to enhance monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.

The agency intends to establish district-level offices to improve oversight, educate the public, and enforce environmental regulations.

“We recognise that our oversight is currently insufficient, but soon, we will have a presence at the district level to educate, guide, and penalise offenders where necessary,” she stated.

She assured Ghanaians that efforts were underway to restore polluted water bodies, though it would take time.

Illegal gold mining has wreaked havoc across southern Ghana, particularly in resource-rich regions such as the Upper Offin sub-basin.

According to a study by the International Water Management Institute, these once-thriving areas, known for their dense forests and flourishing cocoa plantations, now suffer from severe land degradation, declining agricultural yields, and water pollution.

In 2024, the Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services, through the SERVIR West Africa programme, reported that over 670 square kilometres of land—an area comparable to the size of Singapore—had been destroyed by illegal mining activities.

High water turbidity, a measure of suspended solids in water caused by illegal mining, poses significant threats to water quality, ecosystems, and human health.

In March 2024, Ghana Water Limited reported severe challenges in treating water for residents of Sekondi-Takoradi due to excessive turbidity levels.

The Daboase Water Treatment Plant, initially designed to handle turbidity levels of 100 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), was now dealing with levels reaching 7,000 NTU.

Some areas have recorded turbidity levels as high as 14,000 NTU, far exceeding the 2,000 NTU safety limit.

The excessive sedimentation and toxic chemicals from illegal mining have resulted in frequent machinery breakdowns and escalated the cost of water treatment. Contaminated water sources have forced many communities to seek alternative water supplies, which are often unsafe or unaffordable.

Illegal mining-related water pollution has been linked to severe health conditions, including kidney failure, birth defects, and cancer. High turbidity levels contribute to algae blooms, disrupting food chains and harming aquatic ecosystems.

Several major rivers, including the Pra, Ankobra, Birim, Offin, Densu, and Oti, have been severely polluted by illegal mining activities, endangering both human populations and wildlife.

Ghana faces an uphill battle in restoring its degraded environment, but with strategic funding, stronger enforcement, and public cooperation, progress can be made.

The government, environmental agencies, and international partners must work together to mitigate the damage and implement long-term solutions for sustainable land and water management.

The EPA continues to appeal for urgent intervention, stressing that without immediate action, the country risks long-term environmental and economic consequences.

African countries must collaborate, not rely on aid – Akufo-Addo

0

Former President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has renewed his call for African nations to collaborate in building a self-reliant continent rather than depending on foreign aid.

Speaking at the launch of former Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, Mr. Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for African leaders to shift their focus from donor dependency to fostering strategic partnerships and sustainable economic policies.

“Too often, African nations look outside for solutions when the answers lie within our own borders,” he stated. “We must reject the notion that aid is the key to our development. No country has ever achieved lasting prosperity by depending on handouts.”

His remarks come amid rising concerns over Africa’s economic vulnerabilities, including inflation, debt burdens, and global supply chain disruptions. Most of these vulnerabilities occasioned in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic hardships of African countries has been underlying.

This, former ECOWAS Chair urged African nations to maximize intra-continental trade and investment, stressing that real progress lies in self-sufficiency and cooperation.

He highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a transformative initiative that could unlock the continent’s economic potential.

“If we are to move beyond our historical economic challenges, we must fully embrace the AfCFTA. Removing trade barriers and fostering economic integration will create the conditions necessary for sustainable growth,” he remarked.

Mr. Akufo-Addo also cautioned against the long-term consequences of relying on donor support, which often comes with strings attached.

“Foreign aid is not free—it comes with conditions that may not align with our long-term interests. We must prioritize investments in our people, industries, and agriculture to ensure true self-reliance,” he asserted.

Turning his attention to West Africa, Mr. Akufo-Addo called for stronger collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria as a model for regional economic growth.

“Ghana and Nigeria have demonstrated that when we work together, we achieve more. We share a history, a culture, and a responsibility to lead West Africa towards economic independence,” he noted.

He encouraged both nations to deepen partnerships in trade, energy, and technology, highlighting the mutual benefits of joint ventures. “We must move beyond competition and embrace cooperation, leveraging our strengths for the greater good of our people.”

In his closing remarks, Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to take decisive action in shaping the continent’s future. “Africa’s future is in our hands. With the right leadership, strategic investments, and a commitment to cooperation, we can build a continent that is prosperous, self-reliant, and respected globally.”

E-levy was needless – Gideon Boako [Audio]

0

Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr. Gideon Boako, has revealed that he initially opposed the implementation of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), describing it as unnecessary.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Boako clarified that while he is not against taxation, he believed other approaches could have been explored, even though the levy yielded some revenue.

According to him, his boss and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also opposed the levy, which is why he pledged to abolish it had he been elected president.

The E-Levy was introduced in May 2022 by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government as a means of generating revenue for development projects. However, ahead of the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia vowed to scrap the levy—a promise that drew criticism from his opponents.

Dr. Boako, however, defended the former vice president, insisting that his stance was consistent with his earlier opposition to the levy.

“E-Levy was very unpopular, and my stance, just like Bawumia’s before its introduction, was that it was needless. And for me, indeed, it was needless,” he stated.

He acknowledged that many doubted Dr. Bawumia’s promise because the NPP government was still in power at the time.

“Of course, people didn’t believe him because his government was in power, and they expected it to have been abolished then,” he added.

Dr. Boako also reminded President John Mahama of his campaign pledge to scrap the E-Levy, emphasizing the need to fulfill promises that aim to reduce the financial burden on citizens.

While calling for an alternative revenue mobilization strategy after the levy is removed, he stressed the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing Ghana’s fiscal challenges.

Akufo-Addo government abolished the most taxes ever – Dr Boako

0

The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako says tax reforms implemented during the Akufo-Addo administration were remarkable, and that they constitute the most by any Ghanaian administration.

Recalling the pivotal moment on March 3, 2017, when former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first budget abolished 17 taxes, Dr Boako said the decision significantly eased the financial pressures on citizens and businesses alike.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show, Dr Boako noted that the tax cuts during the Akufo-Addo administration are unparalleled in Ghana’s history, with the removal of upwards of 25 taxes over an eight-year period.

This, he stressed, was a clear indication of the government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for economic growth and development.

“The previous government abolished the most taxes in this country. If you could remember, on March 3, 2017, former President Akufo-Addo’s first budget abolished 17 different taxes in Ghana,” Dr. Boako remarked.

According to Dr Boako, while the government’s tax policies under Akufo-Addo were instrumental in promoting business expansion and stimulating economic activities, there has been a critical balance that needed to be maintained.

Addressing the controversial Electronic Levy (E-Levy), which faced backlash from the public, Dr Boako reaffirmed what he said was his and the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s stance from 2020.

He reiterated that the E-Levy was not too popular and that other avenues could have been explored to meet the government’s revenue needs.

“The E-levy was unpopular, and my stance on its implementation remains the same, just as that of Dr Bawumia right from the year 2020. For me, it was needless,” he stated, also referencing other unpopular tax initiatives like the betting tax.

Despite the challenges of navigating complex fiscal policies, Dr Boako emphasised that the Akufo-Addo administration’s tax cuts demonstrated a forward-thinking approach, laying the foundation for Ghana’s long-term economic stability.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng demands retraction over ‘false and unsavory’ claims by Kwabla Senanu

0

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng is founder of the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng is founder of the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, founder of the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has issued a strong rebuttal to allegations made by veteran lawyer Kwabla Dogbe Senanu regarding the late former Deputy Minister of Finance, Victor Selormey.

In a detailed statement copied to MyNewsGh.com, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng dismissed Senanu’s claims as false and defamatory, demanding an immediate retraction.

In an Instagram post dated February 17, 2025, Lawyer Senanu accused Prof. Frimpong-Boateng of blocking medical treatment for the late Victor Selormey—a claim the renowned heart surgeon has categorically denied.

Frimpong-Boateng criticized Senanu for breaching legal ethics by disclosing private medical details for political gain.

“As a senior lawyer called to the Ghana Bar in 1986, I would not be wrong to say that you have breached the ethics of your profession by your undignified act of disclosing matters relating to the health of your client on the altar of political expediency, although all that you said was false,” Prof. Frimpong-Boateng stated.

He further expressed dismay at Senanu’s comments, emphasizing that he would not violate doctor-patient confidentiality by disclosing details about Selormey’s ailment, despite the falsehoods being circulated.

“On the grounds of ethics and respect for the dead, I decline the invitation to disclose the ailment that plagued Victor… although you have failed to adhere to your lawyer-client confidentiality,” he added.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng also addressed allegations that he had refused a cross-border referral for Selormey’s treatment in the U.S., labelling the claims as baseless.

“I don’t remember having met you anywhere or receiving, or ‘turning down the cross-border referral of the case to the USA,’” he said.

In a sharp retort, he questioned Senanu’s motives for politicizing the issue, stating:

“Why do you accuse me falsely and then paint me with a broad political brush, describing me as a leading member of the NPP when the matters under reference relate to medical treatment offered by the Cardio-Thoracic Centre?”

Frimpong-Boateng revealed his close bond with the late Selormey, highlighting that they were contemporaries at the University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall since 1968.

“While in prison, Mr. Selormey was brought to the Centre for treatment. He was accorded the best of care… A special side ward was earmarked for him under my watch anytime he was brought to the hospital to ensure his comfort and dignity,” he noted.

The renowned surgeon also disclosed that he personally petitioned former President Kufuor to grant Selormey a presidential pardon, underscoring the depth of their friendship.

He concluded his statement with a firm demand, saying: “I demand that you retract the false and unsavoury statements published about me in your ill-advised political post.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has unveiled plans to introduce a 24-hour passport service as part of an ambitious overhaul of Ghana’s passport system, which is currently struggling with a backlog of applications.

During a tour of the passport head and regional office in Accra, Ablakwa announced the new initiative.

“You’ve also heard about our major reform. We want the passport administration in our country to operate 24 hours a day. This year, you need to be prepared as we will be running three shifts. We aim to reduce the waiting time for passport applications,” he stated.

The Minister outlined five key action plans designed to revamp the passport office and streamline the application process.

He emphasized that specific measures would be put in place to meet clear targets promptly.

In addition to the service extension, Ablakwa hinted at a possible reduction in the passport application fee.

Currently, a standard 32-page passport costs GH₵500.00, and any adjustments will be made to ensure that fees are equitable, with contributions from wealthier citizens helping to subsidize the costs for those in need.

The announcement reflects Ablakwa’s commitment not only to improving efficiency in passport processing but also to enhancing the welfare of the service staff.

The President of the Ghana HIV/AIDS Network, Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, has reiterated the importance of strictly adhering to HIV treatment.

According to him, following the prescribed treatment has numerous benefits, including reducing the viral load and minimizing the risk of transmission.

He emphasized that treatment protects both the patient and their partners, as well as the people they interact with.

Speaking to Stella Dziedzorm Sogli on the Health Focus show, he noted, “As part of our campaign, we have something we call U=U, which means undetectable equals untransmissible. What this means is that when someone starts treatment, stays on treatment, and takes their medication consistently without mixing it with other substances within a period of six months to a maximum of one year, they will achieve viral suppression.”

Ortsin further explained, “This means that at a certain point, the amount of virus in the person’s body becomes extremely low, and even the few remaining viruses are inactive. At that stage, the person cannot pass the virus to another person.”

“HIV treatment is recognized as a key public health strategy for preventing transmission,” he stressed.

He also added that the surest way to detect the virus is through testing. However, HIV can be transmitted through breast milk, semen, vaginal fluid, and blood.

Govt has secured enough fuel to avert dumsor

0

The government has assured the public that it has secured adequate fuel supplies to sustain power generation, despite reports of intermittent outages, commonly referred to as dumsor, in some parts of the country.

Addressing a press briefing on Thursday, February 20, Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, acknowledged the recent power cuts but emphasized that measures have been put in place to maintain a stable and reliable energy supply.

He further stated that Energy Minister John Jinapor is closely monitoring the situation and will engage the public in the coming days to provide updates and address any concerns regarding the outages.

“I can say that the energy minister is aware of the situation and in the coming days he will engage the public. But the threats that we faced at the very onset of this government, which is related to the closure of the West Africa Gas Pipeline and the failure of the previous government to meet its obligation in providing fuel for thermal power generation were averted.

“The government has brought an adequate supply of fuel. But it is important from time to time to engage the public and address the concerns that they may have when it comes to the power situation,” he stated.

I was out of Ghana for medical reasons, not for CAF elections campaign- Kurt Okraku

0

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, has clarified that his recent conspicuous absence from high profile meetings involving the GFA and Ghanaian football stakeholders was to address medical concerns outside Ghana and not to campaign for a CAF executive position.

Speaking to the media in Kumasi during his visit to Kumasi Asante Kotoko and the family of the late Francis Yaw “Pooley” Frimpong, the GFA President debunked speculations that his trip was related to his bid for a spot on the CAF Executive Committee.

Kotoko fan Pooley was stabbed multiple times when Kotoko played a Ghana Premier League game against Nsoatreman FC and died from the stab wounds signaling problems with hooliganism in Ghana football.

The clarification comes after Kurt Okraku faced criticism for his absence following the tragic death of Pooley in the violent altercation during a match in Nsoatre.

“I was out of the country for medical needs, not to campaign for a CAF executive position. It’s a sorrowful moment. We will continue in this journey of change. The journey that started in 2019. It will be rough and smooth like our current situation but we will keep working hard to make things better” Kurt Okraku said.

He stated, “As you may be aware, the constitutional requirement is that Cabinet must be made up of 19 ministers. And so, the first point of business is to put together this body of 19 ministers chaired by the president himself.”

The newly-formed Cabinet includes ministers for key sectors such as finance, interior, health, defence, energy and green transition; trade, agribusiness and industry, and foreign affairs.

In addition to the 19 cabinet ministers, several other ministers attended the first cabinet meeting.

These included the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams; Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo; Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur; and Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

“So, the following ministers were in attendance at cabinet today, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Minister of State in charge of Special Initiatives and my good self, the Minister for State responsible for Government Communications, the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, and the Minister of State Public Sector Reforms,” he noted.

Kwakye Ofosu further outlined the purpose of the meeting.

“Today’s session primarily was to introduce cabinet and ensure that people have a handle on what exactly the expectation is of them. The ground rules were set out, and important briefings on matters relating to governance took place,” he indicated.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu further indicated that one of the key topics that was addressed was on national security.

“The general view emanating from the briefing was that Ghana’s security was strong, we are a safe country, and people are free to go about their normal activities without hindrance. Whatever threats exist, our security agencies have the capacity to deal with them,” he emphasised.

He noted that the Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Augustus Goosie Tannoh, also provided updates on preparations towards the roll-out of the policy.

“The second briefing was made by the Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and accelerated export development. He briefed cabinet on preparations so far towards a full roll-out of the 24-Hour Economy.

“And one was left with the impression that tremendous work had gone into what is arguably President Mahama’s foremost transformation plan, which aims to convert the Ghanaian economy from its present state into one that never sleeps and works around the clock,” he remarked.

He further announced that the third briefing during the meeting was by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

“The final briefing was made by the minister responsible for finance. As you may be aware, we campaigned strong on Ghana’s failing economy and indeed, our fears were born out when the finance minister made his briefing. The situation is dire,” he noted.

He continued, “The numbers are even worse than we had known in the period of the elections. But the minister, the president and others involved in the management of the economy were confident that the proposals, the policy propositions and the program that President Mahama has put on the table were sufficient to turn around the situation and lift the (sic) of economic hardship and despair that has hanged over this country and its people all these years under the New Patriotic Party, where economic mismanagement and imprudent decision making was commonplace. In a few days’ time, President Mahama will be addressing Parliament.”

Accounting for your actions will open up the market

Economist, Professor Lord Mensah Economist, Professor Lord Mensah

Finance Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Lord Mensah, has stated that holding former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta accountable for his actions during his tenure is a step in the right direction.

The economist emphasized that this move would send a positive signal to the investor community.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Business News, Professor Mensah stressed that any minister who acted irresponsibly while in office should be held accountable.

He explained that investments will not thrive if individuals are not punished for financial misappropriation and other malfeasance.

“Gone are the days when it seemed like people could walk around freely and do as they pleased. It sends a good signal to the investor community… Any minister who holds a portfolio and does not manage it well, making decisions on their own without considering the public interest, should be held responsible,” Professor Mensah said.

“Finance, law, and economics go together. In any environment where laws don’t work, and where people are not punished for financial misappropriation, investments don’t thrive,” he stated.

The economist added, “Once he [Ken Ofori-Atta] is able to account for his actions and we all understand what really transpired regarding his decisions, it opens up the market. The market thrives on openness.”

This statement follows the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) declaration of Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive from justice on February 12, 2025.

The former minister was being investigated for alleged corruption and corruption-related offences.

At a press conference, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated that the offences under investigation included contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority.

Other offences included the termination of a Distribution, Loss Reduction, and Associated Network Improvement Project contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), as well as issues surrounding the procurement of contractors and materials.

Additional offences involved activities and payments related to the National Cathedral project and a contract awarded by the Ministry of Health (initially initiated by the Ministry for Special Development Initiatives) to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and after-sales service and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 305 CDI ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

Providing further details, the Special Prosecutor said Ofori-Atta left the country on or around January 2, 2025. On January 24, 2025, the OSP communicated to him that he was considered a suspect in connection with four of the cases mentioned above.

The Special Prosecutor directed him to appear in person at the OSP on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM for an interview.

By a letter dated January 31, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta instructed his lawyers to inform the OSP that he was out of the country indefinitely on medical grounds and that they would notify the OSP upon his return to reschedule his attendance.

Additionally, the legal firm expressed its willingness to provide the OSP with any required information for the investigation until Ofori-Atta’s return.

However, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the OSP removed the former finance minister’s name from the wanted list.

This decision followed a communication from his legal team informing the OSP that Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana in May 2025.

Alhaji Akambi ‘exposes’ Kotoko over decision to boycott official matches

0

Alhaji Akambi is a management member for Hearts of Oak Alhaji Akambi is a management member for Hearts of Oak

Hearts of Oak’s management member, Alhaji Akambi, has revealed a surprising detail, claiming that Asante Kotoko never intended to boycott their matches but instead requested more time to train after a lengthy break.

Following the stabbing of Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, during Asante Kotoko’s game against Nsoatreman on February 2, 2025, both Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak sought to pressure the Ghana Football Association (GFA) into implementing reforms in the Ghana Premier League.

As part of this effort, the two clubs initially indicated an intention to boycott official matches.

However, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Kotoko released a statement reaffirming their decision not to honor official games, despite resuming training.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak’s decision to play their FA Cup match against Golden Kick over the weekend sparked outrage among fans, who believed the club had abandoned Kotoko in their supposed joint boycott.

In response to the backlash, Akambi disclosed that Kotoko had never firmly committed to boycotting official matches, contrary to their public stance.

He argued that Hearts of Oak did nothing wrong by agreeing to participate in the FA Cup, emphasizing that Kotoko only refrained from playing because they needed additional training time.

“Both Hearts and Kotoko met with the GFA again. What I know is that we had a Zoom meeting with all the clubs, and the General Secretary of the FA made it very clear that this weekend’s FA Cup matches would proceed—except for Kotoko, because they had not trained since the violent clashes. They informed the GFA that they would start training today (Wednesday, February 19) and requested a postponement of their FA Cup match,” he said.

Akambi further revealed that Asante Kotoko made no formal objections to honoring the game, stating that all qualified teams had agreed to participate.

“During the meeting, there were no complaints from Kotoko about refusing to play, and the FA Cup will proceed this weekend as planned since none of the participating clubs have opted out,” he added.

Alongside the appeal, the caucus has also filed a stay of execution to suspend the court’s order while the appeal is heard.

The Koforidua High Court convicted Ernest Yaw Kumi of contempt after he defied an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as a Member of Parliament. Following his failure to appear before the court for sentencing, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Addressing the media, Second Deputy Minority Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib described the court’s ruling as harsh, stating that the Minority disagreed with it.

“Legal steps have been taken. A notice of appeal has been filed against the ruling of the High Court at the Court of Appeal. NPP appeals Ernest Kumi’s conviction, seeks stay of execution

0

The New Patriotic Party has filed a notice of appeal against the conviction of Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia by the Koforidua High Court.

The party has also filed a stay of execution pending appeal.

This follows the High Court in Koforidua convicting the Akwatia MP for contempt of court. The ruling came after he defied an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, also issued a bench warrant for Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.

Citing overwhelming evidence of willful defiance, the court ruled that the lawmaker had acted in contempt.

Addressing journalists in Parliament on Thursday, February 20, Second Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, announced that the legal steps have been initiated, aiming to overturn the High Court’s decision at the Court of Appeal.

“Legal steps have been taken, a notice of appeal has been filed against the ruling of the High Court at the Court of Appeal.

“An application for stay of execution pending appeal has also been filed at the High Court No 3 Koforidua,” stated Shaib.

This appeal seeks to halt the execution of Kumi’s sentence while the case undergoes further legal scrutiny.

According to Shaib, all relevant parties to the certiorari and prohibition application, including His Lordship Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, who presided over the initial ruling, have been duly served with the legal documents.

Actions taken against Ernest Kumi threaten Ghana’s democracy

0

Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has strongly criticized the legal actions taken against Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, warning that they pose a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.

His remarks follow a ruling by the Koforidua High Court on Wednesday, February 19, which found Kumi guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, subsequently issued a bench warrant for Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Thursday, February 19, Shaib decried the move as an infringement on Kumi’s rights and a danger to the nation’s democratic framework.

“Ghana’s democracy thrives on fairness, the rule of law, and the principles of justice. The actions taken against Hon Ernest Yaw Kumi threaten not only his rights but also the very foundations of our democratic processes and principles,” he stated.

He further urged the judiciary to remain impartial and resist any attempts to use the legal system for political gains.

“The judicial system must not be weaponized to serve partisan interests or undermine the will of the people of Akwatia. We call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to ensure that justice prevails,” Shaib added.

Your Advice Must Be Rooted In Wisdom – Mahama To Council Of State

0

Edward Doe Adjaho, Chair, Council of State

President John Dramani Mahama has urged members of the newly inaugurated Council of State to let their deliberations be marked by sincerity and ensure that their advice is rooted in wisdom, while their service is inspired by the supreme welfare of the people of Ghana.

He emphasised the importance of their role in shaping the country’s democratic governance and national development during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Jubilee House.

“Today marks another significant step in our collective commitment to the democratic ideals of governance and development,” President Mahama said in his address.

Acknowledging the recent criticism directed at the council, with some viewing its work as ineffective and merely a rubber-stamp for executive decisions, President Mahama expressed hope that the new members would address these concerns.

According to him, the Council of State serves as a source of experience, guidance, and non-partisan insight for the executive arm of government.

President Mahama also noted that the council’s function is far from ceremonial, underscoring its profound responsibility in advising the President on critical national issues.

He urged them to demonstrate their significance and restore public trust in the council’s role in national governance.

President Mahama reaffirmed his confidence in the council’s ability to serve the nation and contribute to the country’s democratic ideals.

The Chairman of the Council of State, Edward Doe Adjaho, assured President Mahama and the nation that the newly appointed members would work together as a team to reshape the perception of the council.

“It is true that many have questioned the relevance of the Council of State, and some have even called for its abolition, but I want to assure you that this council will be a council of a difference,” Mr. Adjaho stated.

The newly sworn-in Council of State is composed of a diverse group of ex-officio, appointed, and elected members from various professional backgrounds and regions of the country.

Ex-officio members include Justice Sophia Akuffo, former Chief Justice; Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, former Inspector General of Police; and Air Marshal Michael Samson Oje, former Chief of Defense Staff. The traditional leadership is also represented by Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs.

Other appointed members include HRH Mankpanwura Jakpa Achor-Ade Borenyi, Cletus Avoka, and Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho, a former Speaker of Parliament. Additional appointees include Dr. Eunice Brookman-Amissah, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu, Cynthia Komley Adjetey, Mrs. Molly Anim Addo, and Nana Saa Gyemfua II.

The council’s elected members represent a broad geographical spectrum, ensuring regional diversity in national governance. These include Richard Kings Atipko from the Oti Region, Yaw Okyere from Ahafo, Thomas More Ditundi Adiali Ayagitam from the Upper East, and Alhaji Muhammed Mumuni from the Northern Region. Other elected members include HRM Drolor Bosso Adamtey I from Greater Accra, Tingawura Alhaji Samson Seidu Abudu from the Savannah Region, and Odeneho Dr. Afram Brempong III from the Bono Region.

Gov’t Raises Salary By 10% Amidst 23.5% Inflation, Yet CLOGSAG Chose to Protest Against Registrar

0

Political activist and convenor of FixTheCountry Movement Oliver Barker-Vormawor has criticised the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) over what he describes as misplaced priorities regarding worker’s welfare.

In a post on X(formerly Twitter), Oliver Barker-Vormawor expressed concern over the significant loss in real income value for public sector workers following salary negotiations led by the Organised Labour. He pointed out that while Ghana’s inflation rate stood at 23.50% in December 2024 and expected to rise, the agreed salary increments for public workers was only 10%, leading to a real salary value loss of 13.50%.

He questioned CLOGSAG’s silence on the economic hardship facing its members, stating, “Inflation as at December 2024: 23.50% (bound to rise further). Salary Increase negotiated by Organized Labour as at today is 10%. Salary loss in real value: 13.50% (bound to rise)

CLOGSAG, what are you going to do about this. You know that the average worker is worse off by this agreement right? But those who gave you that Agreement are themselves Article 71 office holders. You know that right?”

Oliver Barker-Vormawor further expressed disappointment in the association’s decision to rather embark on a strike over the appointment of a new registrar of Births and Deaths by President John Dramani Mahama, instead of addressing the declining financial conditions of workers.

Mocking their move, he wrote, “We are going to Strike. The NDC president has appointed an NDC man as Registrar of Births and Deaths”

His comments have sparked debate on social media, with many questioning CLOGSAG’s priorities and whether it is truly advocating for the interests of workers of being swayed by political considerations.

Ghanaians neglect their own, allowing Nigerians to claim Highlife

0

Ghanaian musician Ben Brainy has sparked an important conversation about Ghana’s music industry following his recent appearance on Bryt TV with El Baby during his music video premiere.

Addressing a growing concern, Ben Brainy pointed out that Ghanaians do not hold onto their cultural and musical heritage long enough, which has allowed Nigerians to dominate and claim ownership of Highlife music.

Highlife, one of Ghana’s most treasured musical genres, has played a crucial role in shaping African music. With pioneers like E.T. Mensah, Nana Ampadu, Amakye Dede, and Daddy Lumba, the genre has long been a symbol of Ghanaian identity. However, Ben Brainy believes Ghana has not done enough to preserve and promote it.

According to the HomeTown Records signee, Ghanaian musicians often abandon their traditional sounds in pursuit of newer trends, leaving a gap that Nigerian artists have strategically filled. By fusing Highlife with Afrobeat, Nigerians have successfully rebranded and commercialized the genre, gaining international recognition while Ghana struggles to maintain its influence.

“We don’t hold onto our own for long. We started Highlife, but now it’s the Nigerians who are making it big with it. We leave what we have and chase other things,” Ben Brainy lamented during the interview.

He urged Ghanaian musicians and industry players to be more intentional about preserving and promoting Ghana’s musical identity rather than allowing foreign influences to overshadow it. He emphasized that if Ghanaians want to retain ownership of Highlife, they must invest in the genre, push it globally, and take pride in their cultural heritage.

During his appearance on Bryt TV, Ben Brainy also premiered the official music video for his latest song, Location. The song, which blends Afrobeat and Highlife influences, showcases his signature sound and storytelling ability. The visuals complement the song’s theme, adding a vibrant and engaging experience for fans.

Spain’s ex-football boss Luis Rubiales fined for World Cup kiss

0

Spain's former football federation boss Luis Rubiales Spain’s former football federation boss Luis Rubiales

Spain’s former football federation boss Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexual assault for kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent and ordered to pay a fine of €10,800 (£8,942), Spain’s High Court has ruled.

He was acquitted of coercion, for allegedly trying to pressure Hermoso into saying publicly that the kiss was consensual.

As Spain’s players received their medals after defeating England in Sydney to win the 2023 World Cup, Rubiales grabbed Hermoso by the head and kissed her on the lips.

The incident triggered protests and calls for the resignation of Rubiales, who has said he will appeal against the verdict.

The ruling also banned Rubiales from going within a 200m radius of Hermoso and from communicating with her for one year, the court said in a statement.

Three of Rubiales’s former colleagues who were also on trial, accused of colluding in the alleged coercion – Jorge Vilda, coach of the World Cup-winning side, Rubén Rivera, the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF)’s former head of marketing, and Albert Luque, former sporting director – were cleared of those charges.

Prosecutors had demanded a prison sentence for Rubiales, who last week told a court he was “absolutely sure” Hermoso had given her consent before he kissed her.

He described the kiss as an “act of affection”, adding that in the moment it was “something completely spontaneous”.

In her testimony earlier this month, Hermoso insisted that she had not given Rubiales permission and that the incident had “stained one of the happiest days of my life”.

She told the court in Madrid: “My boss was kissing me, and this shouldn’t happen in any social or work setting.”

“A kiss on the lips is only given when I decide so,” she said at the time.

Rubiales was accused of sexual assault and of trying to coerce Hermoso into saying the kiss had been consensual.

The incident was witnessed by millions of television viewers and an entire stadium after the Spanish women’s team won the 2023 World Cup.

The ensuing uproar gave momentum to a “Me Too”-style movement in the Spanish women’s game, in which players sought to combat sexism and achieve parity with their male peers.

Rubiales resigned in September 2023 following weeks of resisting pressure to stand down, and after Fifa suspended him and Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation.

Popular Ghanaian comedian, Derrick Kobina Bonney aka DKB, has been dragged by netizens online after calling for the new NDC government under President, John Dramani Mahama, to consider him for a political apppointment.

DKB, who heavily campaigned for the NDC prior to their win in the 2024 elections, said he hopes that the President will remember him and bless him with any sort of appointment. He indicated his readiness to serve his motherland if given the opportunity.

DKB made his wishes known during an interview with Kojo Daasebre on the AM Club on Max TV Gh.

“I am waiting for an appointment and hoping to be remembered by the President,” he said in the interview.

DKB went on to reveal how his admiration for Mahama grew to the highest level, recounting how Mahama once told one of his jokes on a political platform and named him as his favourite Ghanaian comedian.

Bonney described the moment as one of the highlights of his life so far. He dedicated himself even more to the NDC in the wake of that and campaigned for the party ahead of the 2024 elections. In one infamous moment, DKB shot, edited and published his own skit on the NDC’s largest campaign promise, the 24-hour economy, which was so heavily criticized that he was forced to take it down. DKB did this on his own without being contracted by the NDC hence he feels it’s his time to be rewarded by the party for his loyalty.

Watch the video below..

Despite DKB’s earnest words, social media users dragged him for trying to become a political appointee.

“You think running a country is a comedy show or what? Jokes on you!” one fan wrote.

‘Once the economy improves, we’ll pay you better’ – Mahama assures workers

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called on labour unions to be moderate in their wage demands for 2025, assuring them that once the economy stabilises, he will ensure higher remuneration for workers.

Mahama made the appeal during a National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, which he attended.

Following negotiations, the committee agreed on a 10% increase in the base pay for 2025—the second wage adjustment in less than a year after a 23% hike in 2024.

Addressing union leaders, Mahama stressed the need for patience and collective effort in rebuilding the economy.

“I’ll just appeal to you that let’s tamper our demands for this year, and once we get out of the woods, we’ll set good targets to bring inflation down so that the cost of everything will come down,” he stated.

He further emphasized his administration’s commitment to fair wages, proposing an independent emoluments committee to determine salaries for all workers, including the President.

“We’re prepared to walk this journey with you, but let’s reach an agreement on this one so that we’ll use this year as the year of correction. Once the economy moves in the direction we are hoping for, maybe if you suggest 35%, I’ll support you because it will affect my pay too,” Mahama assured.

Tenants must request for tenancy agreement when renting-Rent Control

The head of Public Relations at the Rent Control Department, Emmanuel Xoxe Kporsu has advised tenants to request a tenancy agreement from landlords before renting a room or house.

According to him, the tenancy agreement guides the tenants on how to live peacefully with their landlords.

In an interview with Kwadwo Sefah Dankwa on Happy 98.9 FMs morning show, Emmanuel stated that tenancy agreements also help tenants and landlords for each of them to know their responsibilities to avoid any interference and misunderstanding.

Sports development, a cornerstone under Mahama’s 24-hour economy-Mahama Ayariga

By Godwill Arthur Mensah

Accra, Feb. 20, GNA – Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader of Parliament, has said the Mahama-led government would make sports development a cornerstone under its 24-hour economy policy.

He said to ensure this, plans were underway to negotiate a deal with SuperSports, a renowned South Africa-based sport channel, to provide coverage for the Ghana Premier League.

The move, he said, would enable Ghanaian football talents to be marketed across Africa and the globe to secure contracts in major leagues worldwide.

The Majority Leader, also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, made this known when contributing to a statement made by Mr Dickson Kyere-Duah, the MP for Berekum West, on the floor of Parliament.

Mr Kyere-Duah’s statement on the floor of the House, raised concerns about the creeping hooliganism in Ghana football and called for stringent security protocols at the various stadia across the country.

He referred to the disturbances that occurred at a football match at Nsoatre between Nsoatreman United and Kotoko Football Club, leading to the untimely death of Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly called “Pooley”.

He called for sensitisation of soccer fans to understand that football “was not a life and death” affair but an avenue for friendship.

While contributing to the statement, Madam Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, the MP for Sunyani West, whose constituency the disturbances occurred added her voice to the call to ensure strict security protocols at the country’s stadia.

She expressed her condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased and urged the security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

Mr Sammi Awuku, the MP for Akuapim North, while contributing to the statement, suggested a ban on siting drinking bars within the precincts of any football stadium in Ghana.

He said that would prevent soccer fans from patronising alcohol being sold near football stadiums.

Comms ministry meets ecosystem partners to chart definitive path for Ghana’s startup and innovation sector

0

Ghana stands on the brink of an innovation breakthrough. With a wealth of research talent and a thriving entrepreneurial spirit, the country has all the ingredients for technological and economic transformation.

Yet, a critical gap remains—the disconnect between research, innovation and commercialisation. Far too many groundbreaking ideas never make it beyond the lab, failing to reach the markets where they can drive real impact.

To change this, a major push is underway to establish a solid legal and policy regulatory framework that will unlock Ghana’s innovation potential. Leading this charge is Heritors Labs in collaboration with The RISA Fund, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and key industry and government stakeholders.

The collective goal is to facilitate the finalization of the long-awaited Ghana Innovation and Startups Bill—a landmark policy designed to empower innovators, attract investment, and drive research and innovation commercialisation.

In furtherance of this, leadership of Heritors Labs, along with officials from the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), the Ghana Innovation and Research Commercialisation Centre (GIRC Centre), and the consultants from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) working on the draft Ghana Innovation and Startups Bill, paid a courtesy call on the minister of communication, digital technology and innovations, Mr. Sam Nartey George.

Discussions were centered on outlining a strategic roadmap for advancing the draft bill, emphasising its critical role in shaping Ghana’s innovation landscape.

“The bill must be finalised and presented to Parliament by July 2025 before the legislative recess,” the minister said.

He added: “We must activate the bill process by May 2025 to ensure timely progress.” The Honourable Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity, stressing that “a wider public engagement process will be initiated before Cabinet submission to garner comprehensive stakeholder buy-in.”

Currently, the bill exists as a “zero draft”—a foundational version that needs refinement and stakeholder input before submission.

According to Mr. Christopher Lartey, Head of the Ghana Innovation and Research Commercialisation (GIRC), the draft will be shared in phases, undergoing a rigorous three-step validation process at the committee, zonal, and national levels.

This meticulous approach ensures that the bill aligns with the needs and aspirations of researchers, innovators, startups, industry leaders, and government policymakers. It’s not just about passing a law—it’s about creating a lasting framework that will fuel innovation, attract investment, and drive sustainable economic growth.

Mr. Nashiru Salifu, Deputy Director of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), reaffirmed the ministry’s unwavering support, stating, “MEST recognises the strategic importance of this bill in positioning Ghana as a leading hub for innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa.”

The recognition of Heritors Labs’ role as a key enabler in this process was also evident as a senior government official noted: “Heritors Labs, in partnership with The RISA Fund and FCDO, has been instrumental in aligning international best practices with Ghana’s unique innovation ecosystem.”

Mr. Kofi Ocloo, Vice President of Heritors Labs, stated, “The comprehensive report presented sheds light on the current innovation landscape in Ghana. By highlighting these challenges and opportunities faced by startups and innovators within the Ghanaian innovation economy, Heritors Labs has gathered critical data that provides a solid foundation for the draft bill that genuinely addresses the needs of Ghana’s innovation ecosystem.”

“Through collaborative efforts with policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts, Heritors Labs continues to shape a policy landscape that fosters a conducive environment for startups, researchers, and investors alike,” he added.

Heritors Labs, with the support of FCDO and the RISA Fund, has pledged to continue providing funding until the Innovation and Startups Bill is passed in Parliament, helping to drive the successful implementation of the bill. Other key government officials and technical experts at the meeting included

Present at the meeting were: Mr. Alexander Arphul, Chief Director of the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology & Innovations (MOCDTI); Barbara Barnes, Director of Research, Statistics, and Information Management (RSIM) at MOCDTI.

The team from Heritors Labs were represented by Kofi Ocloo—Vice President, Emmanuel Amartey—General Manager, and Barbara Aidoo–Programme Engagement Lead. Others were consultants Roland Asare, Mavis Akuffobea-Essilfie, Gordon Akon-Yamga, and Wilhemina Quaye, who are leading the drafting process of the bill.

The Reset I Voted for – Social Media Users Cheer on As Ashanti Regional Minister Gives Galamseyers Two Weeks Ultimatum

0

The newly appointed Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has sparked social media joy after giving illegal miners (galamsey) workers in his region two weeks to vacate their sites or face arrest.

Dr. Amoakohene, during a press conference, announced that anyone involved in galamsey in the Ashanti Region has two weeks to leave the site and find a different profession to engage in because at the expiry of the ultimatum, all hell will break loose.

He said that unlike the previous President, Nana Akufo-Addo, who condoned the menace, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to eradicate it and he will do his best to ensure that vision becomes a reality.

He said: “Anyone in the forest reserve mining should vacate those places. We are giving them up to two weeks. If you are mining within the forest reserves and you don’t want to be on the bad side of the law, you have two weeks to leave the place,”

Illegal mining locally known as galamsey has become a menace in Ghana within the past few years, particularly in the second term of the former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Things became so bad at a point that most water bodies in Ghana became polluted, to the point the Ghana Water Company announced they could no longer safely purify water in certain areas.

Social media users, reacting to the news, were ecstatic that a government was finally taking action.

Teenagers remanded over GH¢41,000 gold theft, Police suspect larger syndicate

0

The prosecutor in the teenage lovers’ gold theft case has told the court that the police suspect a larger criminal syndicate with several possible accomplices involved in the crime.

Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, the prosecutor, therefore, appealed for more time to conduct further investigations into the case.

He also stated that the police needed additional time to verify the true ages of the suspects.

The Assin Fosu District Court, where the two appeared today, remanded them in juvenile cells to reappear on March 5, 2025.

The two teenage lovers were arrested for allegedly stealing gold and GH¢41,000 from a gold shop at Twifo Praso in the Twifo Ati Morkwa District of the Central Region.

The suspects, who both claim to be 17 years old, were remanded into juvenile cells by the court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu.

Chief Inspector Anyongo informed the court that the police were also investigating the true ages of the suspects, as there are concerns that they may be older than they claim.

The girl had initially told police she was 15 years old but later revised her age to 17 years, while police suspect her boyfriend may be older.

He further revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects had been planning the theft for some time, monitoring the gold shop’s activities before executing the crime.

The two were arrested on Sunday, February 16, 2024, by the Twifo Praso District Police Command, led by District Commander Superintendent Charles Addae Boateng.

The girl was arrested at her hideout in Egyaa near Anomabo, in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region, while her boyfriend was apprehended at a separate location following a tip-off.

Reports indicate that CCTV footage captured the girl stealing from the gold shop before allegedly distributing the stolen money among her accomplices, including her boyfriend.

The police have urged anyone with information about the theft or the suspects to come forward and assist with investigations as efforts continue to track down the remaining accomplices.

We are afraid Kotoko fans will revenge – Nsoatreman player breaks silence on Pooley’s death

0

Nsoatreman FC midfielder Michael Ackah Ballack has expressed concern over potential retaliation from Asante Kotoko fans following the tragic stabbing of Kotoko supporter Nana Pooley.

Speaking with GhanaSportsPage, Ackah Ballack admitted that the incident has created an unsettling atmosphere among players, emphasizing their hopes for justice to be served swiftly.

“We are human beings, so obviously, we are afraid. That is why we hope that justice will be served so that it will take pressure off us,” he said.

Ackah also revealed that players were unaware of the incident immediately after the game and only learned about it in the dressing room.

“For us as players, even after we fought on the pitch, we all spoke normally in the dressing room before we got to hear the news.”

Ackah Ballack also highlighted the unpredictable nature of football careers, noting that some Nsoatreman players could end up playing for Kotoko in the future.

“For some of us, Kotoko might sign us one day because that’s the nature of our job,” he added.

Pooley, a devoted Kotoko fan, tragically lost his life earlier this month, during a league game between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko on February 2, 2025.

Asante Kotoko, who put all first-team activities on hold, following the incident have resumed training following a meeting with GFA.

Promote your show, don’t try to compete with Dennis and Alordia!

Artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis Artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis

Artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis, has cautioned Stonebwoy and his management against rivaling established UK-based event promoters, Dennis of Akwaaba UK and Alordia.

Speaking on Hitz FM on February 20, 2025, Ashis emphasised that Stonebwoy’s team should focus on promoting their show instead of worrying about the ‘clashing dates’ with other events.

He questioned the logic behind Stonebwoy’s manager Chief Stylz accusing others of sabotage.

“Why should somebody fight about this one? Do your show and allow the other person do his show. We have various brands that’s going to be performing on the night. Whoever touches whoever’s heart, that’s where they will go.

“Why are you saying they are sabotaging? Do your homework, do your research, do what you have to do. So he should drop his show for you to go on?” he stated.

He further emphasised that Stonebwoy, as a strong brand, should remain focused and avoid distractions, adding that, this is the perfect opportunity to prove that Ghana can also shut down the UK with two events on the same day.

“You’re a mighty Stonebwoy. Stand on your toes, stop the talking, and promote your show. Unless this is a strategic plan to generate noise, it’s unnecessary,” Ashis added.

Ashis also pointed out that it is risky to rival individuals like Dennis and Alordia, who have been at the forefront of Ghanaian events in the UK for decades and have massive connections.

“Dennis has been doing this since 1998, and Alordia UK has a solid database. These are not just anybodies; they are event promoters who know the trade better than you. You cannot rival them; you will fail,” he cautioned.

He advised Stonebwoy’s team to leverage their own database and ensure they have a clear understanding of their target audience.

“If they don’t have a database of the kind of people they can attract to the auditorium, they are wrestling in vain. Dennis and Alordia have held Ghanaian music in the UK for years when there was nothing for us to celebrate. Don’t try to compete with them,” Ashis concluded.

Rental laws are clearly violated in Ghana – Edem Agbana laments

0

Ketu North Member of Parliament, Eric Edem Agbana Ketu North Member of Parliament, Eric Edem Agbana

The Member of Parliament of Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana has described Ghana’s rental system as burdensome and unregulated.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb TV’s George Ayisi, he lamented the difficulty in finding landlords willing to accept rent advances for six months or less.

“Today, how many people are ready to rent their properties for you to pay six months or less? Everybody is looking for one year, two years and in some instances even five years. To get a one-year rent advance, which is even a clear violation of the law, [is difficult]… and we must have the system doing something about it. We have to do something about it,” he remarked.

He expressed frustration over the financial strain the rental regime imposes on tenants.

“If you’re looking for a single room as a young National Service Personnel or as a student or a young graduate, you are likely to pay between GH₵100 and GH₵1500, when your National Service allowance is just GH₵715, which will be for a month. And so, it means that you need double or more than double your allowance to even pay for rent,” he added.

He further quizzed, “What happens to feeding, what happens to transportation? And so, the rent regime here is very problematic because of the exorbitant charges within the sector.”

Beyond the financial burden, he pointed out how weak enforcement of rent laws leave tenants vulnerable to exploitation.

“How many people are ready to rent their properties for you to pay six months or less? Everybody is looking for one year, two years and in some instances even five years, which is even a clear violation of the law that is virtually not in existence. And we must have the system doing something about it. We have to do something about it, because this rent advance of one year, two years, how are you able to pay GH¢5,000 a month for 36 months, which is three years, 24 months which is two years?

“Where would the average Ghanaian like me, like young graduates, where would they get the money to pay for that? It is really difficult to afford that. So, that also must be worked on. There are virtually no regulations for the sector even when there are disputes,” he added.

Edem Agbana urged all stakeholders to take immediate actions to reform the rent system and bridge the housing deficit, insisting that without concrete measures, housing will remain inaccessible for the average Ghanaian.
