Akufo-Addo’s Ghana beyond aid was just a slogan – Asah Asante

Political analyst Dr. Asah Asante Political analyst Dr. Asah Asante

Political analyst Dr. Asah Asante has criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership, questioning the effectiveness of his Ghana Beyond Aid agenda and his handling of economic challenges.

He argued that many of the ex-president’s promises lacked proper implementation, contributing to public discontent and his government’s declining popularity.

In an interview with Naa Dedei Tettey on Starr FM, Dr. Asante delivered a critical assessment of the former president’s leadership, particularly regarding his vision for economic independence.

He referenced Akufo-Addo’s recent remarks about African countries collaborating instead of relying on aid, a position he championed while in office. However, Dr. Asante questioned the sincerity and effectiveness of this agenda, arguing that it lacked tangible action.

“It is a statement which is very interesting, but one would have thought that the President’s charity begins at home,” he said. “He started the process, but it didn’t end anywhere. The government itself did not put in the effort to sustain or implement it. It was just a mere statement with no conscious effort to make it a reality.”

While in office, President Akufo-Addo had defended his vision for economic self-sufficiency, stating, “We can, together, build a new Ghanaian civilization where there is fair opportunity for all in education, health, and decent jobs. We must free ourselves from the shackles of dependence on aid.”

However, Dr. Asante argued that this vision was not backed by policies strong enough to reduce Ghana’s dependence on external financial support.

Beyond the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda, Dr. Asante accused the former leader of making grand pronouncements without follow-through. He pointed to promises such as making Accra the cleanest city in Africa and the One Village, One Dam initiative, questioning whether these commitments were fulfilled.

“The former president had a habit of pronouncing beautiful ideas and policies, but he could not actualize them,” he remarked. “He said he would make Accra the cleanest city—was that achieved? He promised to fight corruption, but what happened? There is a disconnect between what was said and what was done.”

However, President Akufo-Addo had previously maintained that his government was committed to these promises. “We are implementing policies that will transform Ghana’s economy and infrastructure. We will see Accra become the cleanest city, and we will ensure food security with the One Village, One Dam initiative,” he had assured Ghanaians.

On the issue of declining popularity, Dr. Asante addressed the ex-president’s admission that protests and economic conditions contributed to his government’s loss of support. He argued that the signs of public discontent were evident long before the elections and should have been addressed proactively.

“From a political science perspective, the signs were clear—weak economy, strikes, and public demonstrations all signal trouble for any government,” he explained. “If a leader ignores these warning signs, they are on their way out. I am surprised the president is only acknowledging this now.”

During his tenure, Nana Akufo-Addo had defended his economic policies, stating, “The economy is on the right track. The challenges we face are temporary, and we are putting in place measures to stabilize the situation.”

Dr. Asante also questioned the political advice the former president received, suggesting that his own posture and messaging may have discouraged his supporters. He specifically referenced an instance where the ex-president reportedly told voters they could vote however they wanted.

“As a student of democracy, I support free choice, but tactically, was that a strong move? Leaders must inspire confidence, not indifference.”

Concluding his analysis, Dr. Asante warned against self-denial in political leadership. “When leaders fail, they must reflect on the real causes rather than attributing losses to external factors. If you do not listen to public concerns, you risk losing power.”

NIB Invites Joe Ghartey For Questioning

Joe Ghartey

Former Minister for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, has been summoned by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for questioning on the Ghana Sky Train project.

Reports said Mr. Ghartey would be interrogated as part of ongoing investigations by the NIB into the feasibility and financial dealings of the urban railway initiative.

This comes after the detention of the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, on Sunday by the NIB.

In 2019, Ghana signed a concession agreement with Africa Investment (Ai) Sky Train Consortium, with an estimated cost of $3 billion.

The project, which was meant to tackle urban traffic congestion, particularly in Accra, could not take off as planned.

GIIF reportedly invested $2 million in the project, which money was flagged by the Auditor General in his report to Parliament.

Ameyaw-Akumfi’s Release

Meanwhile, the NIB has released Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi following a detention related to an investigation into financial matters during his tenure as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF).

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was detained on Sunday morning as part of ongoing inquiries into financial approvals he oversaw while at the helm of the GIIF.

His legal counsel, Ken Kuranchie, confirmed his release shortly after the incident.

According to Mr. Kuranchie, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was at his home in the morning when a group of men in three pickups arrived and informed him that he was needed at the NIB.

He disclosed that the former minister voluntarily accompanied the officials to the NIB headquarters, located in Kawukudi, Accra, where he was held.

While the specific details of the investigation remain unclear, it is understood that the NIB is examining financial approvals during Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s time as Board Chairman at GIIF.

The investigation reportedly focuses on financial matters that occurred during his tenure, though the exact nature of the allegations is still undisclosed.

In addition to Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s detention, the NIB has summoned Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, to appear before them on February 26, 2025.

Abronye is expected to provide evidence regarding allegations he made about President John Dramani Mahama allegedly withholding GH¢550 million intended for dismissed appointees at the Jubilee House.

In a recent interview on Accra-based Movement Television, Abronye DC accused the government of corruption in recruitment and revocation processes, sparking further attention on the NIB’s actions.

Abronye’s invitation to the NIB has led to claims of selective investigation, with the politician suggesting that the agency is biased in its approach towards NPP members.

Abronye criticised the NIB for its handling of investigations involving government officials.

He argued that the NIB had not pursued similar inquiries into wild allegations surrounding government figures, pointing to alleged corruption linked to the Akyem mafia and other matters.

“There was money intended for those employees whose appointment letters have been terminated, and no government will recruit for that budgeting. So I’ll go and face them,” Abronye said, adding that the NIB’s investigation could be an attempt to suppress free speech.

“It was clear we were going to do well, but on the day of election, something was amiss”

0

According to reports from GhanaWeb, former Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Adomako Baafi, has attributed the party’s declining relationship with the media to the appointment of Eugene Arhin, who previously served as the Communications Director at the Jubilee House, particularly as the 2024 general elections approach.

Baafi suggested that Arhin’s mismanagement of communication during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo played a significant role in the party’s struggles.

In a recent interview with Movement TV, he urged the NPP to reflect on its past missteps and implement changes to improve future outcomes.

He expressed that Arhin’s role as government spokesperson created a disconnect with the media, stating that during the president’s travels, there was a lack of communication that alienated the party.

Baafi also noted that even though he had personal reservations about Felix Kwakye, he believed Kwakye would have been a more effective communicator.

In a related context, the NPP’s candidate for the 2024 elections pointed to low voter turnout and insufficient support from major media outlets as contributing factors to the party’s previous defeat.

He revealed that more than 2.1 million supporters did not cast their ballots.

“It was clear that we were going to do well, but on the day of the election, something was amiss. The turnout was so low. Everybody was wondering what was happening, why, and where are our people. And that was from Axim all the way to Zebilla, and everybody was wondering, where are our people? What was going on?” he questioned.

During a meeting with party communicators on December 18, 2024, he acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the election results, noting that their efforts suggested a favorable outcome based on ground reports from all constituencies.

He highlighted the unexpected low turnout on election day, expressing confusion over the whereabouts of their supporters across various regions.

Minerals Commission lacks authority to license small-scale miners – Bekoe

0

Samuel Osei Bekoe, Executive Director of the Center for Extractives and Development, Africa, has disclosed that the Minerals Commission has no authority to license any small-scale miner to operate in water bodies or forest reserves.

Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday, February 25, he emphasized that any small-scale mining activity conducted under a licence from the Minerals Commission in these areas is illegal and must be dealt with accordingly.

The Minerals Commission, a key player in the sector, is a government agency responsible for developing and coordinating mineral sector policies and overseeing their implementation.

Samuel Osei Bekoe’s demand for dealing with small-scale miners under the licence of the mineral commission comes in the wake of the environmental threat caused by illegal mining. The activity known as galamsey has been a major environmental and socio-economic issue in Ghana, leading to severe degradation of water bodies and forest reserves.

Despite numerous efforts by the government, including military interventions and regulatory crackdowns, illegal miners continue to operate, posing a significant threat to the country’s natural resources and livelihoods.

Based on these illegalities of the operation, Bekoe further called for urgent government intervention to protect water bodies and forest reserves.

“The Minerals Commission does not have any right to issue a licence for small-scale mining in water bodies or forest reserves. This means that anyone operating in these areas as a small-scale miner is doing so illegally. That is why we are calling for a state of emergency on the water bodies and forest reserves,” he stated.

Minister of Transport pays working visit to Ghana Shippers’ Authority

His visit aimed to engage leadership and gain firsthand insight into the GSA's operations His visit aimed to engage leadership and gain firsthand insight into the GSA’s operations

As part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that Ghana remains the preferred commercial shipping hub in the sub-region, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe paid a working visit to the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) on Monday, 24th February 2025.

His visit aimed to engage leadership, motivate staff, and gain firsthand insight into the GSA’s operations at a critical juncture of regulatory reform.

Accompanied by the Ministry’s Chief Director, Mrs. Mabel Sagoe, and other senior officials, Hon. Nikpe was warmly received by GSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ransford Gyampo, along with key figures from Corporate Affairs and HR & Administration.

The meeting set the stage for high-level discussions on the implementation of the recently enacted GSA Act 2024 (Act 1122) and its impact on Ghana’s commercial shipping landscape.

During the visit, Professor Gyampo provided a brief history of the GSA and emphasized the significance of the new legislation in regulating the country’s commercial shipping industry.

He noted that the previous law, NRCD 254, had governed the sector for fifty years but was now outdated and inadequate for addressing the evolving dynamics of international trade.

“The core objective of the new legislation is to tackle key challenges hindering trade and to reduce the cost of doing business in Ghana. The framers of the law envisioned a commercial shipping environment that is fair, efficient, and competitive, fostering international trade while protecting industry players,” he explained.

He further highlighted that the GSA’s expanded mandate seeks to safeguard the interests of both shippers and shipping service providers, ensuring a system that enhances and facilitates international trade.

“Without trade, the country cannot progress. Our efforts to combat poverty and underdevelopment will be futile if we do not strengthen trade relations among nations. We cannot pursue the government’s ‘Reset’ agenda while our trading partners consider relocating due to high charges and deliberate inefficiencies by some service providers, which cause unnecessary delays aimed at imposing demurrage charges on shippers. Such practices should not be part of the reset agenda,” he asserted.

Additionally, Professor Gyampo revealed that the GSA is in the process of drafting a Legislative Instrument (LI) to guide the operationalization of Act 1122 (2024). He assured that its enforcement would protect all stakeholders while prioritizing the welfare of Ghanaians.

In response, Minister Nikpe reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the GSA in fully implementing the new law.

“The GSA Act 2024 (Act 1122) is crucial for enhancing efficiency, promoting transparency, and strengthening the regulatory framework of Ghana’s shipping and logistics sector. As the Ministry of Transport, we assure you of our full support in implementing and operationalizing the Act. I will personally oversee its parliamentary processes to ensure its full execution,” he pledged.

He, however, urged the GSA to consider the concerns of all stakeholders, emphasizing the need for collaboration to facilitate the seamless and effective implementation of the law.

He noted that this approach would create a more conducive business environment for all involved.

Professor Gyampo assured the Minister that he had the full backing of the GSA’s management and staff.

He added that the GSA had aligned its plans and programs with the government’s Reset agenda, which prioritizes economic growth.

‘I slept with my cousin by mistake, now he wants us to be together!’

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I recently found out that my cousin has been in love with me since we were kids. Growing up, we were really close. He used to take me out and often told his friends that I was his favorite cousin. I had no idea about his feelings until two days ago.

My mother has three children, and as the eldest, I carry a lot of responsibilities. My cousin, on the other hand, had the opportunity to travel to the United States, where, by God’s grace, he became successful. He has always been there for me, helping with my tuition and even assisting me in setting up my business.

Recently, he sent me GH¢9,000 to get an apartment, saying that a “big girl” like me shouldn’t still be living with my mother. At the time, I thought he was just being generous because I was his favorite cousin.

However, I should have suspected something when his sister frequently complained to me that he doesn’t give her enough financial support.

He also sent me his old car from the States because he bought a new one. I rejected the car because I didn’t know how to explain to my mom and aunt that he had given it to me.

He knew I was in a relationship but never said anything about it until he came back to Ghana. When I introduced him to my boyfriend, I noticed he wasn’t really interested in getting to know him.

A few days ago, he invited me to visit him for two days, which I agreed to. That’s when things got weird. While we were talking, he sat very close to me, and before I realized it, he kissed me on the lips.

Considering how close we’ve been since childhood, I couldn’t get angry. Instead, I felt disgusted and devastated. I didn’t push him away, but I also didn’t kiss him back.

That’s when he confessed that he had been in love with me since we were kids and that I was the only woman he thought about during his time in the States. He’s a nice guy, but I’ve always loved him as a brother. Then, he started fondling my breasts, and before I knew it, I became aroused. I couldn’t help but give in. We were intimate for a while, and eventually, we had sex.

Afterward, I felt weird and scared, thinking he had only wanted to take advantage of me. But he reassured me that he genuinely loves me. Feeling guilty, I made the mistake of confessing everything to my boyfriend, which has now created a huge problem. My cousin is now asking me to break up with my boyfriend, promising to give me a better life.

Now, I’m completely confused about my feelings. I don’t know if I love him as a brother or as a romantic partner. What should I do? I need help!

The fights in Parliament are worse than Nsoatreman incident

Ghana Premier League legend, Charles Taylor Ghana Premier League legend, Charles Taylor

Ghana Premier League legend, Charles Taylor, has questioned the moral temerity of Parliament to comment on issues of hooliganism in the country, positing that the house of lawmakers has not covered itself in glory when it comes to issues of chaos and violence.

The issue of hooliganism in the Ghana Premier League took centre stage on the floor of Parliament on February 19, 2025.

Contributing to the discussion, Sammi Awuku, who is the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, proposed a law that bars drinking spots from being sited close to match venues in the country.

His reason was that football fans tend to take some alcoholic drinks, and that affects their behaviour at the stadiums.

“One of the issues that concerns me is the location of drinking spots near our stadiums. Fans are not allowed to bring alcohol into the stadium, but many consume it heavily before entering. When tensions rise during a game, their judgment is impaired, leading to potential misconduct,” Awuku noted.

His proposal has been rejected by Charles Taylor, who holds that the issue of hooliganism is deeper than the location of drinking spots close to game venues.

He surmised that the entitlement of home fans to victory and the conduct of referees are more pressing than the issue of drinking spots having proximity to match venues.

“Then he should be prepared to host them in his house. When he came into power, he didn’t create any jobs for anyone but wanted some jobs to close down because some are taking alcohol. There are certain things you don’t say because it is not possible.

“He is an MP, what has been the impact of MPs on the welfare of Ghanaians? The fight in Parliament was even worse than what we witnessed at Nsoatreman. The fights and irrelevant discussions they engage in Parliament are worse than what we see in football. If we are going by his logic, then we should ban the sale of petroleum because you will need fuel to drive to the stadium,” he said.

The discussions were triggered by the murder of Asante Kotoko fan, Francis Frimpong alias Pooley, during a game between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on February 2, 2025.

So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the murder. However, the main suspect who is accused of stabbing Pooley is still at large.

Murdered businessman’s body found in sack in Kenya

Campbell Scott disappeared from a hotel in Nairobi's affluent business district Campbell Scott disappeared from a hotel in Nairobi’s affluent business district

The body of a murdered Scottish businessman was found in a sack by a Kenyan cattle herder days after he went missing from his hotel.

Campbell Scott, 58, arrived in Nairobi’s affluent Westlands district for a business trip on 15 February. He was last seen the following night with an unidentified man, having been to a nightclub.

The BBC has learned his body was found about 60 miles (96.5km) outside of Nairobi in a forest. His hands and legs had been bound with rope.

Local police have arrested two people – a taxi driver and a waiter from the club – who may have been among the last to see him alive.

Mr Scott, from Dunfermline in Fife, was a senior director at credit scoring firm Fico.

He was attending a conference at the JW Marriott Hotel in Nairobi and was due to meet colleagues to discuss a presentation.

When he did not return to the hotel on 16 February, colleagues tried to call him but could not reach him.

They filed a police report and a search was launched, with Interpol later joining the investigation.

On Saturday police received a report that a cattle herder had seen a body inside a sack, which was later identified as Mr Scott.

It is expected that an autopsy will be carried out later on Tuesday.

The BBC’s deputy Africa editor Anne Soy said the apparent murder has surprised the local community.

She told the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland programme: “It is unusual especially because the victim is a foreigner who had just arrived in the country.

“He was going to meet other businessmen for what looks like legitimate business. That has really surprised people.

“There are really no theories as to what could have happened. The employer has asked people not to speculate about any issues around his death.”

Mr Scott studied at Woodmill High School in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy Technical College, going on to work for a number of companies before joining Fico.

Confirming his death on Monday, a spokeswoman for the firm said staff were “devastated” by the news.

She added: “Campbell was a leader in our international Scores business.

“He joined FICO in 2014 and was instrumental in introducing Scores to new markets and growing our business with existing partnerships. We mourn his passing and will miss his humour and kindness.

“Our thoughts are with Campbell’s family and friends. We ask that the media respect their privacy.”

The UK Foreign Office has been contacted for comment.

We’ve intensified efforts to curb cocoa smuggling

0

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has stated that it is working to address price disparities in the cocoa sector as part of efforts to curb smuggling.

This follows the interception of 1115 gallons of cocoa beans at the Ave-Havi border en route to Togo.

The seized beans have been handed over to COCOBOD while investigations continue.

Speaking to Citi News, Director of Special Services, Charles Amenyaglo, said COCOBOD is implementing measures to track and counter the activities of cocoa smugglers.

“COCOBOD is finding innovative ways of fighting the smuggling menace. As we speak, we want to identify all the routes so that we can block all those routes and all the strategies that they use.

“So the management of COCOBOD is deliberating on how to, when it comes to price disparity, we are looking at various ways of bridging that and there is a committee working on that.

“In the interim, we are manning the access routes and then we do spot checks and thorough searches to identify people who are carrying the beans.”

Ghana and West Ham United midfielder Mohamed Kudus has set his sights on attaining greater heights in the world of football.

The 24-year-old announced his presence in the English Premier League with a huge statement in his debut season with the Hammers racking up impressive numbers with 14 goals to his name.

The Black Stars midfielder also came out as the player with the most successful dribbles in the 2023/24 season with 95 beating Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku (81).

Speaking to Rising Ballers, the West Ham man says he acknowledges the progress he has made in his career so far but is still determined for more.

“I try to get the balance of not looking at that (where I come from) and feeling satisfied and thinking like I’ve made it now because I still believe that I still have a lot under my belt to come,” he said.

“For me, I’m just trying to find the balance like I said knowing how far I’ve come and being grateful to God and all the people around me who supported for that to happen also knowing that there’s still a lot more to do.”

Kudus, who has enjoyed a tough season in front of goal this season both in the club and national colours, will be looking to capitalise on his good performance against Arsenal last weekend in subsequent games.

No one will pray for John Mahama to succeed – NPP’s Salam Mustapha

0

Salam Mustapha is the National Youth Organiser of the NPP Salam Mustapha is the National Youth Organiser of the NPP

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has opposed calls from sections of the general public advocating for prayers for President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to succeed.

Expressing his views, he noted that the same individuals advocating for prayers did not make similar calls during former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, highlighting what he described as the hypocritical nature of many citizens.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, the party executive emphasised that the success and achievements of an administration and its leader are measured by their ability to fulfill promises made to the citizens, rather than being based on ‘metaphysics.’

“I have heard this narrative that the people of Ghana are losing faith in democracy and politics and that we should pray for President John Mahama to succeed to save the political class and our democracy. Such arrant nonsense. Akufo-Addo de3, he was a butcher right and didn’t deserve the prayers of all? No one will pray for John Mahama to succeed, his success is not premised on metaphysics but deliverables,” he wrote.

Salam Mustapha maintained a differing view, stating that the government does not require prayers, mentioning how it has undertaken certain measures that, in his opinion, have been to the detriment of the ordinary Ghanaian citizen.

“A president who starts his tenure with mass firing of young people, releases his party cronies standing trials for various offences, terribly failing on his major promises to the people, needs prayers? No. A government that is already showing signs of intolerance and threatening free speech?” he mentioned.

He has therefore urged the public not to offer prayers for the government but instead hold it accountable for its deeds and actions.

Sky Train Project Followed Due Process – Ghartey to NIB

Joe Ghartey

Former Railways Development Minister, Joe Ghartey says Monday’s meeting with officials of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) investigating the Sky Train Project laid to rest any doubts that the Railways Development Ministry did not follow due process.

Speaking to pressmen after the meeting with NIB officials, Mr Ghartey said that the Sky Train Project was modeled as a Build, Operate Transfer (BOT) transaction and thus, no payments were made by the Railways Development Ministry on his watch, as evidenced by the Auditor-General’s report, 2021.

The former Railways Development Minister intimated that his ministry took all the needful steps to ensure that it bore no liability (risk and cost) for feasibility studies conducted on the project.

Responding to questions about the invitation by the NIB, Mr Ghartey said he had incorporated several clauses in the Agreements covering the Project to absolve his ministry of any financial obligations whatsoever.

Mr Ghartey further stated that he had no reservations about cooperating with the NIB officials on Monday as the Sky Train transaction was above board.

Earlier, the former GIIF Board Chairman, Prof. Ameyaw Akumfi had also been invited to provide information on the transaction.

There’ll be no cover up; we’ll deal with those behind illegal mining – Western Regional Minister

0

Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has vowed to deal with individuals involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, regardless of their political affiliation.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Mr. Nelson stated that his administration is fully committed to the fight against illegal mining and will not shield anyone found culpable.

“We will deal with those behind illegal galamsey. We are not ready to cover up for anyone. If someone is involved in this illegality, we will take action,” he assured.

As a three-term regional secretary of the ruling party, Mr. Nelson said he knows all party members in the region and will ensure that no one receives protection if found to be engaging in illegal activities.

“There are reports that some party members are behind these illegal operations. We are investigating, and I can assure you that we won’t shield anyone,” he stated.

He stressed that if authorities were only interested in protecting individuals, no arrests would have been made.

“We are committed to the fight, and the commitment is there. The sector minister’s stance on this issue is also encouraging for us as regional ministers, and we are ready to support efforts to combat illegal mining,” he added.

Mr. Nelson also addressed the recent assault of a journalist, condemning the act and calling for strict punishment for those involved.

“Those who attacked the journalist must be punished to serve as a deterrent to others,” he insisted.

Despite the challenges in tackling illegal mining, he urged all stakeholders, including the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), to remain resolute in their efforts to protect the country’s water bodies and environment.

“My administration will not shy away from coordinating efforts to fight this menace and restore our environment,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the Western Regional Police Command has raided illegal mining sites in Avelebo and Akango, located in the Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira District.

During the operation, the police seized 10 excavators and arrested 15 individuals, including seven foreign nationals and eight Ghanaian miners.

Galatasaray to initiate criminal charges against Jose Mourinho over ‘monkey’ comments

Turkish club Galatasaray has announced their intentions to ‘initiate criminal proceedings’ against Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho over what they claim to be racist statements he made during their 0-0 game on Monday, February 24, 2025.

In a post-match conference, Jose Mourinho aimed a dig at the Galatasaray players and coaches, stating that the bench of Galatasaray were ‘jumping like monkeys’ during the game.

Mourinho also reserved some harsh words for the referee whom he described as a ‘disaster’.

“I have to thank the referee. After the big dive in the first minute and their bench jumping like monkeys on top of the kid… with a Turkish referee, you would have a yellow card after one minute and after five minutes I would have to change him.”

He added: “I went to the referee’s dressing room after the game, of course, the fourth official was there, a Turkish referee. I told him ‘thank you for coming here, you came for a big match’ and I turned myself to the fourth official and I said ‘If you were a referee this match would be a disaster’.”

Galatasaray, in response, said they would not only initiate legal action against Jose Mourinho, but they would also file “official complaints” to football’s governing bodies.

In a statement, Galatasaray said: “Since the commencement of his managerial duties in Turkey, Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people. Today, his discourse has escalated beyond merely immoral comments into unequivocally inhumane rhetoric.

“We hereby formally declare our intention to initiate criminal proceedings concerning the racist statements made by Jose Mourinho and shall accordingly submit official complaints to UEFA and FIFA.

“Furthermore, we shall diligently observe the stance adopted by Fenerbahce – an institution professing to uphold ‘exemplary moral values’ – in response to the reprehensible conduct exhibited by their manager.”

Jose Mourinho, who won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea and FC Porto, was appointed Fenerbahce manager in the 2023/2024 season.

In the video, he was dressed in a black outfit, black glasses, and a white cap.

The eye surgery was made possible after business moguls Ibrahim Mahama, and Kwaku Oteng donated a huge sum of money for the procedure.

Additionally, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help cover his medical expenses.

As of February 21, 2025, a total of €4,339 has been raised toward the €50,000 target.

What led to Kofi Adomah’s current condition?

A few months ago, Kofi Adomah Nwanwanii, along with his team from Angel FM/TV, Kofi TV, and MagrahebTV, traveled to Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region of Ghana to cover the Dormaa Kwafie Festival and the 25th anniversary of the enstoolment of Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II.

I will resist any attempt by President Mahama to mutilate Free SHS

President John Dramani Mahama and Rev. John Ntim Fordjour President John Dramani Mahama and Rev. John Ntim Fordjour

Former Deputy Minister of Education, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has vowed to resist any attempt by the John Dramani Mahama government to tamper with the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

According to him, information he is gathering on the ongoing National Education Forum organised by the government points to the fact that it wants to limit access to the Free SHS program.

He indicated that one of his predictions was that the government was going to reintroduce a cut-off point for the program and the deliberation at the forum points to the fact that the government intends to do so.

“The two or three specific predictions I made before the education forum started are playing out. And I, Ntim Fordjour, would resist any attempt to mutilate Free SHS.

“One of them is that they are saying that they want to bring back the cut-off (point). I have engaged and debated with Kofi Asare, one of the committee members of the education forum. All they are saying is that they are bringing a cut-off (point),” he said.

About the National Education Forum:

The National Education Forum, launched by President John Dramani Mahama, is a national initiative aimed at addressing key issues within Ghana’s education sector.

The forum, which kicked off on February 18, 2025, in Ho, will span multiple regions and conclude on February 28, 2025.

The theme, “Transforming Education for a Sustainable Future,” serves as a clarion call to address the challenges at all levels of education starting from basic education to secondary school while focusing on equitable growth and sustainability.

One of the forum’s core objectives is to address the sustainability of the Free SHS program. While the initiative has been a significant success, there are concerns about its long-term viability.

Discussions at the forum will focus on finding solutions for sustainable financing, ensuring that quality education is accessible to all without overburdening the national budget.

The focus on sustainability also extends to the broader educational reforms that are needed to address issues such as teacher training, curriculum development, and the balance between access and quality.

GAB Governing Council engages BoG Governor on key sectoral issues

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama

The Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) governing council met with the newly appointed Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to discuss pressing issues affecting the banking sector.

The meeting opened with congratulatory remarks from GAB members, who emphasized the need for stronger collaboration and open dialogue between banks and the regulator to foster trust and consensus-building on key financial policies.

One of the major concerns raised was the urgent need to amend the current Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) regime, which banks argued is limiting financial intermediation and increasing the cost of banking.

The Governor assured members that he recognizes the impact of the CRR and intends to review it critically.

However, he noted that any adjustment must be phased to avoid unintended economic consequences. He welcomed industry insights on how to minimize risks associated with liquidity releases, mentioning that even the IMF supports a review.

The discussion also touched on the country’s credit rating challenges and their effect on correspondent banking relationships.

GAB members called for an upward revision of Nostro and affiliate exposure limits to ease constraints on international transactions.

The Governor acknowledged the practical difficulties banks face in securing new correspondent banking relationships and committed to assessing the situation further.

The growing influence of Money Transfer Operators (MTOs) and Fintechs in the remittance business was another critical issue.

Banks highlighted concerns over regulatory gaps that could lead to foreign exchange (FX) losses for the country.

In response, the Governor referenced an ongoing BoG review of MTO operations and urged banks to cooperate in streamlining the sector for greater transparency.

GAB also raised concerns about the upcoming expiration of the special dispensation on restructured Cocoa Bonds under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) in April 2025.

Banks stressed that continued market illiquidity and COCOBOD’s financial position make it difficult to sell down these bonds. The Governor responded positively, indicating his willingness to extend the dispensation to support affected banks.

The conversation expanded to broader financial sector development, including a push for deeper FX liquidity in the interbank market. Banks called for an end to the mandatory sale of FX proceeds from mining and oil companies to BoG, arguing that allowing these proceeds to flow through the banking system would improve FX price discovery.

The Governor acknowledged the importance of FX market efficiency and indicated a willingness to engage further on the matter.

Agriculture financing was also a key topic, with the Governor seeking banks’ views on the effectiveness of GIRSAL in de-risking agricultural lending. Bank executives responded positively and expressed support for scaling up initiatives to enhance lending to the sector.

The Governor reaffirmed his commitment to doubling agricultural financing and assisting GIRSAL in raising additional guarantee funds.

He called on GAB to lead stakeholder engagements to improve and de-risk select agricultural value chains.

The meeting also explored ways to address rising Non-Performing Loans (NPLs), with the Governor emphasizing the role fiscal policy can play in reducing inflation and interest rates.

Another critical issue raised was the possibility of revising the universal banking licence regime by introducing more flexibility in capital requirements and exploring a tiered banking system, including Islamic banking as part of the review.

On regional trade, the Governor stressed the importance of settling transactions with major African trading partners in local currencies rather than defaulting to the US dollar, which puts pressure on the cedi.

He specifically mentioned Nigeria and South Africa as key trade partners with whom local currency settlements could be explored and encouraged regional banks to facilitate intra-African trade.

The meeting concluded with remarks from bank MDs and the Governor, emphasizing a shared commitment to continuous engagement on these critical issues.

Owner of King Faisal FC, Alhaji Grusah Owner of King Faisal FC, Alhaji Grusah

Football administrator Alhaji Karim Grusah has disclosed that he received a huge financial reward after renaming his club after the former King of Saudi Arabia, Faisal.

He indicated that the late King Faisal, pleased with the recognition, gifted him a whopping $5,000 to show his appreciation.

Alhaji Grusah explained that the decision stemmed from King Faisal’s pivotal role in the Israel-Palestine conflict, where he worked towards a peaceful resolution during his reign.

“I renamed my team King Faisal to honor the King of Saudi Arabia for his role in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The King of Saudi Arabia sent me $5,000 after I named my club after him,” he said during an interview with Sporty FM on February 24, 2025.

About King Faisal

Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was the King of Saudi Arabia from November 2, 1964, until his assassination in 1975. Before his ascension, he served as Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia from November 9, 1953, to November 2, 1964, and was briefly regent to his half-brother King Saud in 1964.

He was Prime Minister from 1954 to 1960 and from 1962 to 1975. Faisal was the third son of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia.

Faisal was born in Riyadh to Abdulaziz, then Emir of Nejd, and Tarfa bint Abdullah Al Sheikh.

Faisal successfully stabilized the Kingdom’s bureaucracy, and his reign had significant popularity among Saudi Arabians, despite his reforms facing some controversy. Following his assassination by his nephew Faisal bin Musaid in 1975, he was succeeded by his half-brother Khalid.

Dome Kwabenya NPP Denies Role In Defeat

0

Robert Osei Bonsu (L) with a constituency executive

Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency have debunked allegations by a youth group suggesting that they contributed to the defeat of its parliamentary candidate, Mike Oquaye, in the 2024 election.

Robert Osei Bonsu, who responded to the allegations among other issues at a press conference at his residence at Haatso yesterday in Accra, said the executives of the party at the constituency were alive to its responsibilities before and during the 2024 election, despite the conduct of some disgruntled members of the NPP who worked to ensure the party and its parliamentary candidate lost the 2024 election to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He said the claim that the constituency executives manipulated the election process to favour their candidates at the national level during the party’s internal elections, which began with the polling stations, are fabricated and untenable.

He said, “All the allegations levelled by the so-called youth group are untenable. There is no iota of truth in them. They are fabricated and concocted to paint the constituency executives, coordinators, PC and committed polling station executives black in the sight of right-thinking members of the NPP fraternity.”

Mr. Bonsu also refuted claims that constituency executives also deleted names of 600 people from the constituency album.

“It is on record that the group in pursuit of their demands with regards to their alleged exclusion from the internal election processes initiated legal action against the party at Adenta High Court and the Kwabenya District Circuit Court. It is on record that they lost their cases. What again do they want?” he quizzed.

He also mentioned that some members of the party, including Seth Osei Kissi, Edward Sarpong also known Senior Atta, a polling station executive and also an ardent supporter of Adwoa Sarfo, Alhaji Ibrahim, who is purported to be the leading member of the Concerned  Youths, were seen canvassing for votes for the NDC parliamentary candidate.

Mr. Bonsu, who also pointed out some of the challenges the party faced during the absence of Adwoa Sarfo and its effects on the 2024 election in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, said Adwoa Safo’s involvement in the constituency activities were nonexistent.

The Chairman stated how the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo, went to the US without informing Parliament, as well as her refusal to participate in the Municipal Assembly meetings to help address concerns of her constituents.

He said the former Dome-Kwabenya MP, who refused to support the executives of the party, was seen on social media singing and dancing on TikTok.

That action, he explained, infuriated members of the constituency, which ultimately led to the party’s defeat in the 2024 election.

“Hon. Adwoa Safo did not engage herself in any campaign activity in the constituency before and after she lost the parliamentary primaries in 2024. She was absent throughout the campaign period. Several attempts to involve her proved futile, and she refused to return calls from the parliamentary candidate,” Mr. Bonsu disclosed.

He further indicated that all attempts by the then Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Adelaide Ahwireng, Gabby Asare Okyere Darko, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Madam Naa Toshie Addo among other notable people to involve her in various campaigns at the constituency failed, as she rather spent her time in Ashanti and other constituencies in Trobu and Adenta in the Greater Accra Region.

The Chairman alleged that, apart from portraying such behaviour, Adwoa Safo also diverted fabrics and some amount of money from the former Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, Naa Torshie Addo, to the NDC parliamentary candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, and was also found jubilating with the NDC candidate after the declaration of the result in some of the churches at the constituency.

He, therefore, urged the public to disregard all allegations made against the executives who have over the years been committed to the development of the constituency, while assuring the public and members of the constituency of the party’s commitment to work hard to recapture the seat in 2028.

Amazon cloud tax hike puts pressure Ghanaian start-ups

0

Ethel Cofie, CEO of EDEL Technology Consulting and a digital transformation advisor.

Ethel Cofie, CEO of EDEL Technology Consulting and a digital transformation advisor.

Ghanaian technology start-ups are in trouble after Amazon Web Services announced that from March 1, 2025, it will impose a 21% tax on cloud services for customers in the West African country.

This tax consists of a 15% value added tax  and an additional 6% in levies, which include the National Health Insurance Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy, and the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy.

Ethel Cofie, CEO of EDEL Technology Consulting and a digital transformation advisor, feels that the introduction of this tax will have a significant impact Ghana’s burgeoning tech startup ecosystem and its overall digital transformation efforts.

Cofie, who serves on a number of boards, including one of West Africa’s largest insurance firms, as well as fintech and logistics start-ups in East and West Africa, believes the move will result in increased operational costs because cloud services are essential to start-ups, providing scalable infrastructure without the need for significant upfront investments.

She explains: “An additional 21% tax on these services will elevate operational expenses, potentially straining the limited budgets of early-stage startups, higher costs may deter startups from adopting essential cloud technologies, hindering innovation and scalability.

“This could place Ghanaian start-ups at a disadvantage compared to regional competitors operating in more cloud-friendly financial environments.”

Furthermore, Cofie says the move could potentially slowdown digital adoption as increased expenses associated with cloud services might discourage businesses from transitioning to digital platforms, potentially slowing the country’s digital growth trajectory.

Nonetheless, she notes that despite these challenges, Ghana’s public cloud market is projected to grow by 19.78% between 2025 and 2029, reaching a market volume of US$630.10 million by 2029.

“Ghana hosts over 55 active tech hubs, fostering a vibrant startup scene that heavily relies on affordable cloud services for development and deployment,” she says.

Cofie advises start-ups to avoid the unfavourable effects of the new tax regime on start-ups by considering the following measures: Government subsidies or tax reliefs; promotion of local cloud providers; and tax reduction negotiations.

She says: “While the taxation of digital services aligns with global trends aiming to capture revenue from the digital economy, it’s crucial to balance this with the need to foster innovation and support emerging businesses.

“Strategic interventions can help mitigate potential negative impacts on Ghana’s tech startups and sustain the momentum of its digital growth.”

NPP Germany dares Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu to ‘spill all rotten beans’ on Akufo-Addo government

0

Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu, U.S based Ghanaian economist Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu, U.S based Ghanaian economist

The Germany branch of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has challenged U.S.-based Ghanaian economist Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu to substantiate his claims that he has evidence of widespread corruption and depletion of state resources by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.

In a press release issued on Tuesday and signed by its Communications Director, Nana Osei Boateng, NPP Germany responded to a publication on GhanaWeb dated February 21, 2025, titled: “Ghanaians Will Demand ‘Fast Track Court’ After NPP’s Actions Are Revealed – Economist.”

NPP Germany further mocked Dr. Iddrisu’s assertion that he uncovered damning economic data at the Ministry of Finance but refuses to disclose specifics, citing an “oath of secrecy.”

The release stated, “This is nothing but a cheap trick to cast aspersions on the NPP without providing a shred of verifiable evidence.”

PRESS RELEASE

25-02-2025

NPP Germany Dares Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu to Spill All Rotten Beans on NPP: Exposing the Deceptive Propaganda of Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu and the NDC

The latest attempt by Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu, a so-called U.S.-based economist, to smear the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration reeks of classic National Democratic Congress (NDC) propaganda.

His recent statements, published by GhanaWeb on February 21, 2025, claiming that Ghanaians would demand a ‘fast track court’ to prosecute former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, are nothing more than an orchestrated effort to manipulate public sentiment with baseless allegations and half-truths.

First and foremost, it is laughable that Dr. Iddrisu claims to have uncovered damning economic data at the Ministry of Finance but conveniently hides behind an “oath of secrecy” to avoid sharing specifics.

This is nothing but a cheap trick to cast aspersions on the NPP without providing a shred of verifiable evidence.

If the economic mismanagement he alleges were indeed factual, why not present a comprehensive and credible analysis? Or does he fear that an objective review of the data would contradict his politically motivated rhetoric?

Furthermore, the assertion that the NPP government left the economy in a disastrous state is a hollow narrative that ignores global economic realities.

The Akufo-Addo administration navigated Ghana through the economic wreckage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, global supply chain disruptions, and international financial instability.

While challenges remain, no honest economist would ignore the significant infrastructure development, educational reforms, and industrial initiatives spearheaded under the NPP’s leadership.

The depreciation of the cedi, rising inflation, and fiscal constraints are not unique to Ghana but are part of broader economic trends affecting emerging economies worldwide.

It is also worth noting that the NDC, with its history of economic mismanagement and corruption, is in no position to lecture Ghanaians on fiscal responsibility.

The Mahama-led government left behind a collapsed energy sector (dumsor), excessive public debt, and a near-crisis banking system that required bold interventions from the Akufo-Addo administration.

The NPP inherited an economy in distress and made remarkable strides in stabilizing it, despite external shocks.

This is the truth the NDC and their operatives, like Dr. Iddrisu, wish to erase from public discourse.

Dr. Iddrisu’s hyperbolic call for ‘fast track courts’ to jail former NPP officials is not just reckless but an outright abuse of due process and democratic principles.

Ghana is a country governed by laws, not the whims of politically motivated economists and social media agitators.

If there is any wrongdoing, let the evidence be presented in a court of law—not in the court of public opinion through sensationalist Facebook posts.

It is time for Ghanaians to reject the calculated deception and fear-mongering of the NDC and their cronies.

Instead of fabricating economic horror stories, Dr. Iddrisu and his cohorts should focus on ensuring that the current administration delivers on its promises and does not repeat the glaring failures of the Mahama era.

Ghanaians deserve facts, not propaganda.

We say KUDOS to the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia government!

God Bless Our Homeland Ghana!

Long Live Ghana! Long Live the Elephant Party!

Deal with NDC galamsey offenders – Ken Ashigbey to Mahama

0

The Convener of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition, Ken Ashigbey, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate and explicit action against politically exposed individuals implicated in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, February 24, Ken Ashigbey emphasized that the country faces an existential crisis due to the environmental destruction and water pollution caused by galamsey.

He noted that despite the President’s strong rhetoric against illegal mining, decisive action has been lacking, particularly in cases involving members of his own ruling party.

Ashigbey highlighted two recent cases involving members of the ruling NDC government—one in Aowin and another in Ellembelle — which demand urgent and decisive action.

The MP for Aowin has been accused of engaging in illegal mining activities by Chiefs in the area, he noted, adding “another one is also in the Ellembelle area, the constituency for the Hon. Minister for Lands and Natural resources. The NDC constituency chairperson is being accused by a gold mining firm, I think Adamus  or something of being encroached in their concession or something and being involved in galamsey. That is also a politically exposed person.”

According to Ashigbey, President Mahama must take a clear stance on these cases, just as he has done in previous corruption-related matters.

Beyond individual cases, Ashigbey criticized the continued existence of L.I. 2462, insisting it must be repealed immediately.

“L.I. 2462 is a bad law and must be repealed,” he said.

Despite the severity of the situation, he noted that the level of urgency applied to galamsey has not matched the swift action taken in other sectors by the government.

“You remember that the president before he even took office he set up ORAL, because he thought corruption was killing us. Immediately they got in, and then they got the challenge with education and feeding, immediately they didn’t set up a committee to think about what is happening and find out any information- they got into action, the same thing happened with Energy issues. Unfortunately we’ve not had that level of attention and action to the issue of galamsey,” he argued.

President Nkrumah and Kufour must be given their due!

Ghanaian reggae artist and media personality, Blakk Rasta, has shared his thoughts on a tragic accident that occurred in East Legon involving two young ladies and the son of popular bishop, Salifu Amoako.

During a discussion on United Showbiz on February 22, 2025, Blakk Rasta noted that the bishop’s son will have to live with the trauma of being labeled a killer.

He explained that the heavy criticism the young man is facing on social media is partly due to controversial statements made by his father, who once claimed he could evade road safety regulations without consequences.

“I think the boy has suffered enough. If care is not taken, he may never be able to drive again because of the trauma he’s experiencing. He will be classified as a killer. The backlash he is facing is not just because of the accident, but also because of the sins of his father,” he said.

Blakk Rasta further urged Bishop Salifu Amoako to be mindful of his words when speaking on certain issues.

“I think he needs to watch what he says. He is an anointed man of God, I like him but this is about Ghana. If he openly claims that he can disregard the country’s laws, then the country will come after him. He painted a picture that in his household, traffic rules and regulations are not respected. He even implied that a seven-year-old in his house could drive without a license,” he added.

Background

On Monday, February 17, 2025, the Attorney General withdrew charges against Bishop Salifu Amoako, his wife, and another individual who had been prosecuted for allowing their son to drive without a license.

However, according to a report by GHOne, the couple was immediately re-arrested upon exiting the court.

The 16-year-old son of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako was sentenced on December 19, 2024, to six months at a senior correctional center.

This followed his guilty plea to eight charges, including two counts of manslaughter, for a tragic road crash in East Legon that claimed the lives of two preteens.

Before his sentencing, Salifu Amoako’s son was remanded by the Family and Juvenile Court and held at the Osu Correctional Centre while being prosecuted for causing the crash.

According to police prosecutors, he had been showing off the speed of a Jaguar F-Pace Sport, which belonged to his parents, when he collided with a black Acura carrying the victims.

A newly crowned queen mother of Nungua, Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson, was shot during her installation, on Monday, February 24, 2025.

According to Accra-based Ablade TV Online, Naa Borley Nelson was appointed to be queen mother of GAMU Nungua West within the GaDangme Muslim community.

She was in line with other appointed traditional leaders awaiting their installation when she was shot.

A video of the incident shared by Ablade TV on Facebook showed the moment the queen mother was shot.

She was standing with a group of men who were supposedly the other appointed traditional leaders.

An initial gunshot was fired, which startled some of the people at the event, but there was no commotion.

Another gunshot was fired, which hit the queen mother, who could be seen falling after the impact of the shot.

The men standing with her were initially at a loss as to what was happening. After realising that she had been hit by a gunshot, they immediately began the search for the person who fired the shot.

Some of the men could be seen trying to help the queen mother.

Ablade TV indicated that the gunshot was from a musket which was fired unintentionally by a yet-to-be-identified attendee.

It added that the installation, per a flyer, was organised by the Greater Accra Council of GaDangme Muslim Chiefs, Queens, and Imams, under the auspices of the Nungua Traditional Council.

Senyo Hosi calls for human capital investment, applauds 10% salary hike

Economic policy analyst, Senyo Hosi Economic policy analyst, Senyo Hosi

Economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has urged the government to focus on developing Ghana’s human capital, emphasizing that “the most valuable asset any nation has is its people.”

He believes that prioritizing education, vocational training, and entrepreneurial support will ensure sustainable growth and help address pressing economic challenges.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, Senyo Hosi commended the government for what he described as a constructive approach to negotiations regarding the recent 10% base salary increment for public sector workers.

“I am impressed by how the government has managed this entire process, and I commend labour for the cooperation they have shown,” he said, noting that the shift in tone and governance style has been critical in winning labour’s trust.

“There is a humility in the President’s submissions that we have not seen in a long time,” he added, attributing much of the progress in talks to an administration that appears more measured and reflective of national realities.

While acknowledging these positive developments, Senyo Hosi cautioned against a disconnect between leadership and public expectations.

“You don’t ask people to tighten their belts while you loosen yours,” he remarked, underscoring that policymakers should visibly share in the sacrifices they demand from citizens.

He emphasized that the credibility of reforms hinges on leaders demonstrating commitment and empathy in their economic decisions.

The latest agreement between the government and organized labour, signed last Thursday, raised the base pay for public sector workers by 10%, effective January 2025.

Labour Minister Dr. Rashid Pelpuo announced that, as a result of the new base pay structure, the daily minimum wage has increased to GH¢19.97.

This marks the second salary revision in less than a year, following a 23% increase in 2024 aimed at helping workers cope with the rising cost of living.

The increment is expected to provide some relief to public sector employees as the country continues to navigate ongoing economic pressures.

Beyond increasing the base pay, Senyo Hosi believes that harnessing the potential of Ghana’s workforce through better skill development will foster a culture of innovation.

He has also repeatedly called for disciplined fiscal policies to rein in government spending, reduce public debt obligations, and cultivate a stable economic environment attractive to both local and international investors.

In his view, “Ghana’s fiscal balance must be more than a line item on a budget report,” stressing the need for proactive measures to prevent debt servicing costs from hindering growth.

Highlighting the role of the private sector as a key driver of job creation, Senyo Hosi urged the Mahama-led government to reduce bureaucratic barriers that hinder entrepreneurship.

He advocates for diversifying the economy beyond traditional commodities such as cocoa and gold, arguing that technology-driven agriculture and modern supply chains can better shield Ghana from global price shocks.

Through this multi-faceted strategy strengthening human capital, fostering collaboration between government and labour, and maintaining prudent financial management Senyo Hosi believes Ghana can achieve a resilient and inclusive economic future.

Rio Ferdinand in social media spat with Jamie Carragher over disrespectful AFCON comment

Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand

English football legends, Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand, have shared differing opinions on the status of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), leading to a heated argument.

During the post-match analysis of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on February 23, 2025, on Sky Sports, Carragher asserted that although Mohammed Salah, an Egyptian, excels with Liverpool, the lack of a major tournament for his national team could hinder his chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

“I think the problem is that he [Salah] is with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in a major tournament, or maybe doesn’t have a great chance of winning. I think it’s either the Champions League or a major tournament.

“Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr. and Mbappe right now, Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League. Liverpool will be in that conversation, but right now, Los Blancos are certainly the front-runners,” he said.

In response, Ferdinand chided his colleague pundit for harboring an ignorant thought about AFCON.

“I think [what he said] is representative of most people out there, but I don’t think that’s right. It’s an ignorant thought process. Yes, it doesn’t get backed with resources like the Euros, but that doesn’t mean you have to devalue it. It should be respected more than it is. I understand what Jamie’s saying, but I don’t agree with it.

“That’s the majority’s fault, and it’s not right. I think federations like FIFA need to ensure they implement language around AFCON to equal the Euros and the Copa America. Jamie is right in what he’s saying; if Salah won AFCON, it would have no bearing on anyone when they vote for the Ballon d’Or, which is absolutely wrong,” he stated.

However, Carragher was displeased with the former Manchester United defender’s remarks, labeling him a “clown” for misinterpreting his earlier comment.

“I didn’t say that, you clown. Stop playing to the gallery like you always do,” Carragher wrote on Instagram in response to Ferdinand’s comment.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool legend has faced backlash for undermining the prestige of the AFCON and Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.

Mrs. Miracle Adoma Sets the Record Straight on Husband’s Health

0

Mrs. Miracle Adoma, wife of popular journalist Kofi Adoma, has spoken out about her husband’s health condition, addressing speculations and misinformation surrounding his struggles. In an emotional revelation, she clarified that despite numerous public figures expressing concern, only Dr. Kwaku Oteng, the CEO of Angel Group of Companies, provided financial support during their difficult times.

According to her, Kofi Adoma has been battling serious health issues, which have placed a huge financial strain on their family. While many sympathizers and well-wishers have offered words of encouragement, she emphasized that Dr. Kwaku Oteng was the only one who stepped forward with real financial assistance. His generosity, she noted, helped them manage hospital bills and other medical expenses at a crucial time.

Mrs. Adoma also expressed disappointment at individuals who falsely claimed to have supported her husband. She revealed that while many people promised to help, only a few followed through. This, she said, has been an eye-opening experience, showing them who their true friends are.

Her statement has sparked discussions on social media, with some users praising Dr. Kwaku Oteng for his kindness and generosity. Others, however, criticized the lack of support from fellow media personalities and industry colleagues, questioning why more influential people did not step in to assist Kofi Adoma.

She further urged Ghanaians to be mindful of how they treat those in need, stressing that people should not wait for someone’s condition to worsen before offering genuine help. “We’ve learned a lot during this period. Some who claimed to care were nowhere to be found when we truly needed help,” she lamented.

As Kofi Adoma continues his recovery, many have taken to social media to send him well wishes, while others have called for more transparency in how people in the media industry support each other. For now, Mrs. Adoma remains grateful to Dr. Kwaku Oteng and those who genuinely stood by them in their time of need.
